Welcome to our October issue. The appearance of German bombers in the skies over London during the afternoon of September 7th, 1940 heralded a tactical shift in Hitler’s attempt to subdue Great Britain. During the previous two months, the Luftwaffe had targeted RAF airfields and radar stations for destruction in preparation for the German invasion of the island. With invasion plans put on hold and eventually scrapped, Hitler turned his attention to destroying London in an attempt to demoralize the population and force the British to come to terms. We pay tribute to the 70th Anniversary of The London Blitz and why Surrey was a target. Sandown Park Racecourse provides a great location for The Esher Hall Antiques & Fine Art Fair which runs from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th October. Returning for its third year the fair brings together 40 prestigious dealers from all over the UK, transforming the area into a showcase of the very best antiques and fine art for collectors and lovers of antiques, interior designers and private buyers. The annual Guildford Book Festival promises yet another exciting and varied programme of events featuring many of Britain’s finest writers and personalities. The exciting event takes place from the 14th – 23rd this month. Taste of Autumn, a celebration of all things autumnal, returns to RHS Garden Wisley from the 21st – 24th October with apple tastings, food stalls, cooking demonstrations, book signings and much more. As part of the Festival, Wisley also welcomes ‘Europom,’ an annual gathering of apple and fruit enthusiasts from across Europe that is held in a different country each year.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting events and articles featured in this month’s issue, until next month...

With Autumn and Winter coming

This is the best time to talk to us about better senior care. Too many families put off thinking about senior living and care until the last minute. It’s understandable. People often imagine the alternatives to one’s own home aren’t as pleasant, and also they don’t want to think about the cold and dark weather that is on the way. There are two things to remember: There is a living option that preserves the independence of seniors, promotes their wellbeing and enjoyment of life in general: Sunrise. We are the positive high quality alternative to traditional senior care. Our residences are award-winning, our private suites are beautifully appointed, our menu is excellent, our activity programme is revolutionary... and we believe our care is second to none. The second thing to know is that making the right decision and arranging things takes time. And, in truth, finding the best senior living and care solution for this Winter means starting to make plans now. Don’t wait for the nights to draw in and the cold to take hold. Call us today and give yourself the time to start planning for a pleasant winter, whatever the weather brings.

Battle of Britain Exhibition unveiled at Brooklands Museum The role of Brooklands in the Battle of Britain is celebrated in a new exhibition opened on 15th September by HRH Prince Michael at Brooklands Museum, to coincide with the celebrations of the 70th Anniversary of that great conflict. When World War Two began in September 1939 the motor racing for which Brooklands was renowned ceased and was never to return. Instead, attention turned to the war effort and aircraft production was expanded on a huge scale. The Vickers-Armstrongs and Hawker aircraft companies had exclusive use of the site

for military aircraft production: ultimately, 2,515 of the 11,461 Vickers Wellington bombers built, and 3,012 of more than 14,000 Hawker Hurricanes, were assembled at Brooklands. The new exhibition – entitled “Brooklands in the Battle of Britain” - is situated in the Museum’s ‘Wellington Hangar’ beside a Hurricane aircraft which was recovered from Russia in 1997, and explains why Brooklands was a prime target for the Luftwaffe in 1940. The distinctive shape of the 1907 motor racing circuit made Brooklands an easily identified target and major efforts were

employed to try and camouflage it, with netting strung on poles set into the concrete and mock buildings erected on the track to disguise its outline. Defences provided for the site include a series of ‘Bofors’ gun towers, one of which still survives on Members Hill. Surrounded by the aeroplanes themselves and photographs and artefacts from the time, the story is told of aircraft production at Brooklands and the attempts by the Luftwaffe to destroy it. The exhibition also features recently discovered photos of extensive bomb damage to the Vickers and Hawker factories during the Battle and lists the names of all who died on 4th September 1940 due to several raids. In what is believed to be the first such public tribute to them, the names of all those on both sides who were killed in the bombing raid on the Vickers works on 4th September 1940 are also displayed in the exhibition. A special plaque unveiled by HRH Prince Michael of Kent pays tribute to the heroism of one man, Lieutenant John Patton of the Royal

Canadian Engineers during another raid on 6th September 1940. Saving hundreds of lives (and safeguarding aircraft production from almost certain disruption) through an extraordinary act of courage Patton, along with some colleagues, removed an unexploded delayedaction German bomb that fell through the Hurricane assembly building to a safe crater where it later detonated harmlessly. Lt Patton was awarded the George Cross, with two of his comrades being awarded the George Medal, for this brave action. Brooklands in the Battle of Britain is now open and will run until 2011. Normal admission charges to the Museum apply but there is no extra charge for entrance to the exhibition. Brooklands Museum, at Brooklands Drive Weybridge KT13 0SL, is open every day from 10am to 5pm. Further details can be obtained from the Museum website (www. brooklandsmuseum.com)

The London Blitz

The appearance of German bombers in the skies over London during the afternoon of September 7th, 1940 heralded a tactical shift in Hitler’s attempt to subdue Great Britain. During the previous two months, the Luftwaffe had targeted RAF airfields and radar stations for destruction in preparation for the German invasion of the island. With invasion plans put on hold and eventually scrapped, Hitler turned his attention to destroying London in an attempt to demoralize the population and force the British to come to terms. At around 4pm on that September day, 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters blasted London until 6pm. Two hours later, guided by the fires set by the first assault, a second group of raiders commenced another attack that lasted

26 | October issue

until 4.30am the following morning. This was the beginning of the Blitz - a period of intense bombing of London and other cities that continued until the following May. For the next consecutive 57 days, London was bombed either during the day or night. Fires consumed many portions of the city. Residents sought shelter wherever they could find it - many fleeing to the Underground stations that sheltered as many as 177,000 people during the night. Children who had returned home or had not been evacuated, were evacuated.

By September 1939 some 38 million gas masks had been given out, house to house, to families. Everyone in Britain was given a gas mask in a cardboard box,

to protect them from gas bombs, which could be dropped during air raids. Posters reminded people to carry their gas mask at all times. People were fined if they were caught without their gas masks. Britain was blacked out on 1st September 1939, two days before the outbreak of war. A blackout was rigorously implemented and for many Londoners it was the first time they had encountered real darkness outside of their own beds. Various products were created to aid in blacking out lights: shields for car and bicyle lamps and torches, blackout shutters, curtains and wallpaper, and covers for pipe flames. Although often unpopular, maintaining the blackout became something of a ritual for many people. In

c ov e r s to ry

fact many of the precautions were arguably adopted as much for reasons of public morale as for practical usefulness, since even at night the Thames could be visible, its distinctive shape a guide for the bombers. In the worst single incident, 450 were killed when a bomb destroyed a school in Westham being used as an air raid shelter. Londoners and the world were introduced to a new weapon of terror and destruction in the arsenal of twentieth century warfare. By the end of May 1941, over 43,000 civilians, half of them in London, had been killed by bombing and more than a million houses destroyed or damaged in London alone. Its intended goal of demoralising the British into surrender unachieved, the Blitz did little to facilitate potential German invasion. During a raid on Thames Haven, on 24th August, some German aircraft strayed over London and dropped bombs in the East and North East parts of the City, Bethnal Green, Hackney, Islington, Tottenham and Finchley. This prompted the British to mount a retaliatory raid on Berlin the next night with bombs falling in Kreuzberg and Wedding, causing 10 deaths. The first air raid siren in London during the Second World War went off at 11.27am on the day war was declared, 3rd September 1939. It was a false alarm. The first intentional air raids on London were mainly aimed at the Port of London, causing severe damage. Late in the afternoon of 7th September, 364 bombers attacked, escorted by 515 fighters. Another 133 bombers attacked that night. Many of the bombs aimed at the docks fell on neighbouring residential areas, killing 436 Londoners and injuring 1,666.

The fortified Cabinet War Rooms, the secret underground bunker hidden under the Treasury to house the government during the war, was vulnerable to a direct hit. During this first phase of the Blitz, raids took place day and night. Between 100 and 200 bombers attacked London every night but one between mid-September and mid-November. Probably the most devastating raid occurred on the evening of 29th December, when German aircraft attacked the City of London itself with incendiaries and high-explosive bombs, causing a firestorm that has been called the Second Great Fire of London. A photograph showing St Paul’s Cathedral shrouded in smoke became a famous image of the times. The last major attack on London was on 10th May. 515 bombers destroyed or damaged many important buildings, including the British Museum, the Houses of Parliament and St. James’s Palace. The raid caused more casualties than any other: 1,364 killed and 1,616 seriously injured. The civilians of London had an enormous role to play in the protection of their City. Many civilians

28 | october issue

who were not willing or able to join the military became members of the Home Guard, the Air Raid Precautions Service, the Auxiliary Fire Service, and many other organizations. During the Blitz, Boy Scouts guided fire engines to where they were most needed, and became known as the Blitz Scouts. During the Blitz, far fewer dedicated public bomb shelters than necessary were available. The government feared that a “shelter mentality” would develop if people were provided with central deep shelters. This was one of the reasons behind the preference for getting people to construct Anderson shelters in their back gardens. The Anderson Shelter was named after Sir John Anderson, Minister for Civil Defence, and 2,250,000 were supplied free to people on incomes less than £150 a year. The authorities in London, after being put under very considerable pressure from public opinion, did make use of about 80 Underground Tube stations to house about 177,000 people. Over a million houses were damaged or destroyed during the Blitz and one in six Londoners were homeless at some point during this period. For many

of those who have talked about their experiences during the Blitz, the most vivid memories that they relate are of those few moments after their home or their shelter was ‘hit’. Many talk of the stillness, quietness, darkness and disorientation and many remember the strange effects that the bombs could have. The experience of being bombed assaulted the senses. The bright lights of the shells and the parachute flares, the glow of the fires, the searchlights, all arguably made a mockery of the blackout. People listened to the bombs falling, never knowing what their street or their locality would look like when they came out again. Burning warehouses by the docks gave off strange odours while the acrid smell of explosives and gas from damaged pipes, the smell of sewage when in October the city’s main sewage outfall was hit, and dust from bombed buildings all invaded the nose. It was only down in the tube network that people could not hear the droning of bombers, the bombs falling and exploding, the roar and crackle of flames, the fire engines, people shouting. Meanwhile people were dependent upon the sirens and reassured by the noise of the anti-aircraft barrage.

c ov e r s to ry

The people who fought fires, worked as wardens, drove ambulances, opened their shops, kept on going to work, were all ordinary people - albeit it in extraordinary circumstances. They undoubtedly deserve recognition and commendation for their courage and determination. But they can sometimes be mythologised to an extent that makes them seem unreal, characters of fiction rather than real life. For some people it can be difficult to reconcile their own experiences with the stories that are told about them. It is only by recognising them as real people that we can appreciate the enormity of their contribution. Entertainment played an important part during the war in keeping everyone happy, hopeful and informed. The radio kept people informed with what was happening. As most homes didn’t have a television set until the 1950s and 1960s, the radio was the main form of home communication and entertainment during the war. Eight out every ten families in Britain owned a radio. Besides news and information, there were music programmes, talks and comedy shows. The radio was an important way to keep cheerful during the war. In the 1930s, big

bands and swing music were popular. One of the most popular singers of this time was Vera Lynn who sang songs like “We’ll meet again” and “There’ll be blue birds over the white cliffs of Dover”. The Blitz changed London and London life in many ways. Meanwhile daily routines and ways of life had changed, although perhaps replaced by a different kind of routine. Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day) was on May 8th, 1945, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany and the end of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. The formal surrender of the occupying German forces in the Channel Islands was not until May 9th, 1945. In the United Kingdom, more than one million people celebrated in the streets to mark the end of the European part of the war. In London, crowds massed in Trafalgar Square where earlier tens of thousands of people had listened intently as the King’s speech was relayed by loudspeaker, and up The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where King George VI and Queen Elizabeth,

accompanied by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, appeared on the balcony of the Palace before cheering crowds. Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth II) and her sister Princess Margaret were allowed to wander anonymously among the crowds and take part in the celebrations. On that day the traffic stopped for smiling crowds that danced in the streets and the air was full of music, cheering and the ringing of church bells. The collective outpouring of joy was understandable: five years of horror and hardship were finally over. Later Mr Churchill was greeted by cheering crowds as he made his way to Whitehall and appeared on the flag-bedecked balcony of the Ministry of Health. “God bless you all,” he said over the loudspeaker, which was greeted with further cheering and waving from the crowd and a round of “For he’s a jolly good fellow”. All over the country people held fancy dress parades for children, got drunk, made a din, sang and danced in the streets, and went to church to give thanks to God for victory.

Under attack

A new exhibition at London Transport Museum 7th September 2010 to 31st March 2011 A new exhibition, Under attack - London, Coventry and Dresden, opens at London Transport Museum on 7th September 2010 to mark the 70th anniversary of the London Blitz and the 65th anniversary of the Dresden bombing.

to keep the city moving, buses and drivers were loaned from towns across England. Dresden was initially unaffected by bombing but after the Firestorm of February 1945 the city, and its transport system, was completely destroyed.

The exhibition will explore the role of public transport in helping to create a sense of identity and normality for the three cities during the Second World War and, in particular, the air bombing campaigns, and will reflect on the part played by transport organisations and workers in both keeping the cities moving and bolstering public morale. In particular, the exhibition will seek to explore the areas of commonality, as well as difference and to convey the experiences of passengers and staff alike – irrespective of nationality.

Rehabilitation and memory After the war, governments regarded the reinstatement of services as an essential part of rebuilding the war-torn cities. In the 65 years since the end of the war, much of the physical evidence of aerial bombardment has disappeared. But memories of the air raids, reinforced by popular culture, continue to shape the identities of the cities involved.

The exhibition has four themes... Preparation How did the transport companies prepare for war? In Britain politicians warned that enemy bombing would kill thousands of civilians whilst Nazi propaganda claimed that German civilians would not be attacked; in Dresden alone, there were over 25,000 civilian casualties. Sheltering London Transport played a unique role in providing deep level shelter for Londoners and even ran a catering service distributing tea and snacks to the shelterers. Whilst the government promoted images of cheery cockneys resolute in the face of adversity, the reality was that sheltering on the Tube was uncomfortable, unhygienic and unpleasant. Passenger and staff experience Throughout the Blitz, London Transport ‘carried on’ and all staff became front line war workers in the battle to keep London moving. The Blitz devastated Coventry, and

To complement the exhibition the Museum’s award winning LT-Type bus dressed in wartime livery with blast netting on windows, original seating, wartime notices, dimmed headlights and blackout markings, along with a one person LT air raid shelter, will be on temporary display in the ground floor gallery. A display of 20 iconic wartime transport posters will be on display from 3rd September 2010 to 4th January 2011. Works by well known artists of their day will be on show, including posters by Tom Eckersley, Fougasse, Eric Kennington, Walter E Spradbery, Fred

Taylor and Anna Zinkeisen. The exhibition has been developed to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the Blitz in England and the 65th anniversary of the Dresden ‘firestorm’ when four nights of intensive bombing destroyed the city. Under attack - London, Coventry and Dresden will be displayed in the CBS Outdoor Gallery at London Transport Museum, Covent Garden Piazza, London, WC2E 7BB and admission is included in the entry ticket to the main Museum galleries Price adults £10.00* senior citizens £8.00* students £6.00* under 16s free (*includes voluntary Gift Aid donation) For further information visit www.ltmuseum.co.uk or call 020 7565 7298.

A VINTAGE REGATTA Just like last year, participants in the 2010 Little Britain Challenge Cup regatta were greeted by brilliant weather and perfect sailing conditions, and there were an impressive 1200 who turned up; a wonderful mix of experienced sailors and debutantes, who all had a fantastic time racing each other “around the cans” in the Solent over the three day event. The Little Britain Challenge Cup is a construction industry led event, run every year by a volunteer committee, where all the money raised goes to a number of sailing related charities. This year, the regatta was graced by some ‘new blood’, three classic Pilot Cutters. Fast, classic wooden boats from a bygone era, that left many a modern designed boat in their wake. When the racing was over, it was back to the marina and bars to break open some different cans and meet up with new and old friends alike. A band and disco was provided every night for those wanting to dance into the early hours, and the jam-packed floor proved it had the majority vote. Friday night’s highlight was a guest appearance by Stavros Flatley, the irrepressible duo (real names Dimitri and Laggi) who more or less brought the house down, as part of the Greek themed evening, which was just eclipsed by the Saturday Gala night dinner, with entertainment provided by comic legend Barry Cryer. His wonderfully warm humour, razor sharp wit and flawless repartee resulted in a fully-deserved standing ovation. All agreed, this is just the greatest way to have fun and entertain clients, as well as networking and making new contacts, all in the most relaxed and convivial of atmospheres.

Next year’s LBCC regatta takes place 8th -11th September 2011.

Walking the Wey Navigation Towpath

New Haw Lock to Pyrford Bridge by Rachael Talibart

New Haw Lock

Working the lock at New Haw

Towpath, New Haw to Byfleet

The view from Dodd’s Bridge

38 | October issue

The Wey Navigation runs for twenty miles from Weybridge to Godalming through some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. With eight pubs along the route and numerous points of historical interest, the Navigation is one of Surrey’s most rewarding leisure resources. This month’s walk along the towpath takes us from New Haw Lock to Pyrford Bridge. At New Haw, the A318 travels by bridge over the Navigation, its bustle in marked contrast to the peaceful Navigation waters. The lock, which opened in 1653, sits immediately below the bridge’s southern side. Although for most of the Navigation’s long history, the main manned lock has been at Thames Lock in Weybridge, there was no keeper there for the first 100 years and it is possible that the keeper of New Haw Lock was responsible for the whole stretch from New Haw to the Thames (Wardle, 2003). Today, like most of the Navigation’s locks, New Haw Lock is unmanned and the boat crews must work the heavy mechanisms. According to the National Trust’s book of circular ‘Walks Around the Wey and Godalming Navigations” (available at Thames Lock in Weybridge and Dapdune Wharf in Guildford), a former lock-keeper’s wife is reputed to haunt the lock cottage at New Haw. The next stretch of the Navigation runs almost dead straight, due south, along an embankment above heathland to the east, a testament to the skill of its seventeenth century builders. When the National Trust took over the Navigation in 1964, it tried to clear the opposite bank of rubbish tipped here by residents of houses bordering the water. There followed two decades of dispute, on and off, which was finally resolved when the Trust cleared the bank and made it a wildlife habitat (Wardle, 2003).

The towpath soon approaches enormous concrete pillars that carry the M25 over the Navigation. The constant roar of traffic can seem incongruous, especially when a narrow boat chugs gently under the shadow of the overpass. The noise does not seem to have deterred the residents of two narrow boats permanently moored here, next to their carefully tended cottage garden. The colourful graffiti that adorns the overpass pillars softens the impact of the vast concrete blocks. Two other routes meet the Wey Navigation in this spot, telling the history of transportation between the seventeenth century waterway and the modern motorway. Less than 100 metres south of the overpass, the main London to Southampton railway line (1838) crosses the Navigation. Between the railway and the motorway lies the junction with the Basingstoke Canal, opened in 1793 to link London and Basingstoke via the Wey and the Thames. A sign here points to Thames Lock (3 miles), Guildford and Godalming (12 miles) and Greywell Tunnel (31 miles via the Basingstoke Canal). A footbridge runs alongside the railway bridge enabling the walker to cross over to the Basingstoke Canal’s towpath if he wishes, a much easier crossing than the horses used to have to endure in the early days of the Canal, when there was no footbridge, and they had to be ferried across. The Basingstoke Canal never quite enjoyed the financial success of its earlier neighbour, falling into disuse and disrepair in the twentieth century. In 1974, control of the Canal passed to Surrey and Hampshire County Councils and in tandem with the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society, they set about restoring the Canal as a leisure resource.

local life

Under the M25

Finally, in 1991, it was officially re-opened, navigable for 31 miles from the junction with the Wey Navigation to Greywell tunnel near Odiham in Hampshire. The last five miles to Basingstoke were irrecoverable, having previously been filled in and built upon. The Canal is now run by the Basingstoke Canal Authority and anyone thinking of navigating it or walking its towpath should check their website first as low water supply and towpath maintenance sometimes necessitate restrictions on use of some sections (www.basingstoke-canal.co.uk). H G Wells set some of the action in War of the Worlds on the Wey Navigation at Weybridge, but the Basingstoke Canal has its own ‘close encounter’ story. When Ministry of Defence files on investigations into UFOs were released in 2008 they included the bizarre story of Alfred Burtoo who claimed that, at 1am on 12th August 1983, he had been fishing on the Canal when a disc shaped UFO landed on the towpath. Two humanoids invited him in and, as he was 77 ‘and didn’t have much to lose’, he complied. On discovering his age, the ‘aliens’ told him he was too old for their purposes. ‘Anxious not to cause any offence’, he refrained from asking them questions such as what planet they came from. He returned to the towpath and continued fishing for the rest of the night! (www.museumstuff.com/learn/ topics/Basingstoke_Canal). From the junction with the Basingstoke Canal, the Wey Navigation passes under the railway bridge and along a wooded section, with houses on the opposite bank, before reaching Parvis Bridge at Byfleet. Beside the towpath here, just before the low bridge, stands the boathouse of Byfleet Boat Club. According to the information board on the bridge, a boating club was first established at Byfleet in 1904 by local entrepreneur and land owner, Frederico Cornelius Stoop, to provide leisure boating opportunities for the buyers of new housing being built on his wife’s estate at Dartnell Park. The present club is the sixth to occupy this site. (For more detail on the history of all six clubs, see www. byfleetboatclub.co.uk.) The club keeps several Working the Lock at New Haw

Heading towards Byfleet

rowing boats moored by the bridge which can by rented by the public. Nestling between the old Parvis Bridge and the road bridge for the A254 stands Parvis Wharf. The towpath is briefly interrupted and the walker must make a short detour around the buildings at Parvis Wharf but it is worth heeding the invitation on the sign tied to the wire fence and gate here and visiting the wharf itself. This wharf originally served several mills in the immediate area. The larger building on the wharf is known as the Grist Mill, having operated as such into the twentieth century. It is now the home of the Locker and Maintenance Supply Company or ‘TLC’, providing fitting and maintenance for narrowboats and cruisers and craneage services (http://www.thelocker.co.uk). TLC is owned by Stuart and Julia, who happily share their knowledge of the Navigation with the interested visitor. They can show you a bigger and clearer version of the picture on the Parvis Bridge information board which dates from 1910-11 and shows one of the old Wey Barges loading at the Wharf. Their chandlery, inside the Grist Mill, is an Aladdin’s Cave of treasures, including maps, books and postcards as well as brightly painted traditional enamelware decorated by the landlady of the Anchor pub at Pyrford Lock.

The Anchor at Pyrford

and Dodd’s Bridge used to provide access to West Hall, once home of F C Stoop, but now converted to offices. Murray’s Bridge is closed now but Dodd’s Bridge carries a footpath to West Byfleet and this forms part of the National Trust’s circular walk, returning to New Haw via West Byfleet and a stretch of the Basingstoke Canal towpath. Shortly before Pyrford Lock, on the opposite bank from the Navigation towpath, lies Pyrford Marina. Opened in 1984, this large marina has pontoon and bankside berths. Just beyond it, on the towpath side, stands the Anchor, a popular pub in a great location. There has been a public house here for nearly 300 years, the present building dating from the 1930s. It’s a nice spot to take a break and watch the passing boats in summer or, if you are in a mischievous mood, to enjoy the spectacle of drivers of ‘Chelsea tractors’ trying to negotiate the very narrow Pyrford Bridge. Every now and then larger vehicles become stuck here, as the many coloured streaks of paint on the posts testify. From here, the Navigation curves westwards towards Ripley and Walsham Gates where it rejoins the River Wey. Next month Pyrford Lock to Walsham Gates.

Despite its proximity to the M25 and A254, it’s a delightful spot that seems somehow to have retained the feel of a slower, quieter age. Even the wildlife seems undeterred by activity at the site; a heron is often found fishing here and this summer a pair of pied wagtails raised two broods on the crane, affectionately known as Kevin, despite its being in frequent use. After Parvis Wharf, the Navigation heads through trees, past a field with horses and a golf course. At Murray’s Bridge, the M25 plunges away to the South East and the towpath gradually becomes peaceful once more. Between Murray’s Bridge and Dodd’s Bridge the towpath is also a bridleway, the only part of the Navigation towpath on which horses can be ridden for pleasure. Elsewhere they are only allowed if towing a barge, although these days the only horse-drawn barge is at Godalming. Both Murray’s Under the railway

Do you know where the `Ham of Ecg책` is?

In the early 7th Century if you lived in Surrey you may have asked that question a lot, for that was a place where a fierce warrior named Ecg책 had a huge farm. When the Angles and their cousins the Saxons invaded Britannia around 490 AD, they used mercenary tribes in much the same way as the Romans did. These tribes were rewarded with tracts of land and surfs to work them; this is how the feudal system of land-ownership originated in the U.K. The tract of land that Ecg책 was awarded was a huge one, and it is more than likely to have been a retirement gift for many years of family loyalty to the Saxons kings of Surrey. Ecg책 is a name of Norsk originality and his parents may have been Danes, Vikings or

even Jutes from Jutland in the North of Holland. The Saxon word for a house associated with a `Ton` (farm), was `Ham`, so the farm would have had a big house on it to dominate the landscape and show off his wealth. From this the name was corrupted over the centuries, and it eventually became Egham. By the mid 600s the owner would have fallen out with the king, around 666 AD the land was a huge 30 square kilometres. It was awarded to the Abbey of Chertsey which was established around that time, Runnymede Magna cartaisle

and stretched from Surrey into Berkshire; it covered a large section of what is now Windsor Great Park. The Warren and Deer hunting rights, along with the farming rights, Hog rights and the right to gather wood for fuel was worth a small fortune to the Abbey. The Magna Carte (Great Charter) was signed on the manorial estate in 1215 by King John and Baron Fitzwalter, at that time Runnymede was part of the estate and it was known as `Egeham`. The reason that King John chose Runnymede was simply because during the previous year he was constantly avoiding the Barons by moving around a lot. He was holed up in Windsor at the time, and considered that nearby Runnymede was a safe place to have the now famous meeting. A sculpture in the town centre commemorates this. The estate was confiscated by Henry the VIII in 1537 when he was dissolving the monasteries; Henry gave the estate to his supporter Lord Windsor who held it up till 1542. Henry confiscated the land from Lord Windsor after a falling out, and then ordered

lo c a l h i s to ry the royal estates officer to divide the estate up into smaller parts, and lease them off separately. It was at this time that the present town of Egham was first established, with a market town being created at Egham Wick, `Wic` was the Saxon word for a market and was still used extensively in the southern dialect languages. At the time of Henry the VIII`s early reign (1509-1534), English was non-existent, there were 6 regional dialects in the whole of England and each one was different. It was only later in his reign (1536-1547) that Henry was responsible for the making of a single English language, which was through his distribution of the translated bible which every church was given. Egham then started to flourish as a town in its own right, and during the English Civil War of the 1600s, the town was a supporter of the king as Prince Rupert stationed his troops there. After the Parliamentary troops took the town under its control, Oliver Cromwell persuaded Parliament to again confiscate the estate. Cromwell’s reasoning was that Henry the VIII had illegally taken it from the church in 1537, the estate was again sold and the money used to pay the troops. Egham even had a race course at one time, and on a regular basis race days were held at Runnymede Meadow, the royals from nearby Windsor Castle were constant visitors and sponsors of many races. The meetings were held from 1734 right up until 1884. During the first 60 years of the 19th C, the town flourished as a coaching stop. Upward of 50-60 coaches a day would trundle through the unmade roads of the town, many old houses with stabling at the rear were converted to coaching Inns. Since Roman times the roads from Silchester in the north to Staines in the south had always gone through Egham. In 1856 the railway lines were established through the town, coaching started to decline, and that’s when the Inns started dying out. In 1885 the first Labour Exchange in England opened in Egham, the ribbon was cut by the lawyer Nathaniel Louis Cohen who founded the Labour Exchange Movement. Brief History of Royal Holloway University, Egham Royal Holloway, University of London was founded by two Victorian visionaries,

Elizabeth Jesser Reid and Thomas Holloway. Both played a crucial role in the development of equality in education through the creation of two colleges for women, Bedford College in central London, and Royal Holloway College in Surrey, 19 miles to the west of London. Their foresight and philanthropy have ensured opportunities for many generations of students. Elizabeth Jesser Reid, a pioneering social reformer, founded Bedford College in 1849 as the first college in Britain opened for the higher education of women. Its location in Bedford Square was expensive and restricting, and the struggle to provide suitable accommodation for a continually expanding but financially under-endowed establishment led to a number of moves in central London, before finding a base in Regent’s Park in 1913.

The College remained here until the time of the merger with Royal Holloway College in 1985. Bedford College was the very first institution to play a leading role not only in the advancement of women in higher education, but also in public life in general. As soon as the University Degree examinations were opened to women in 1878, Bedford College produced graduates in both the Arts and Sciences. In the last sessions over 1500 students were studying at the College in 21 different subject departments. Thomas Holloway was a self-made multi-millionaire whose fortune had been made in patent medicines. He founded Royal Holloway College in 1879 after initiating a public debate inviting suggestions as to ‘How best to spend a quarter of a million or more’. It was his wife Jane who suggested a college for women as the means by which Holloway’s money might effect ‘the greatest public good’. Holloway’s first great philanthropic enterprise, the Sanatorium at Virginia Water opened in 1885. The second, Royal Holloway College, largely inspired by the Chateau of Chambord in the Loire Valley, was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. Built around two quadrangles, today it continues to impress as much by its size as by the exuberance of the roofline with its many towers and turrets. As solid as it is extravagant, it epitomises the wealth, optimism and spirit of philanthropy so characteristic of the Victorian age. It continues to provide a home for the Royal Holloway Collection.

Oliver Cromwell

In 1900, both Bedford and Royal Holloway were admitted as Schools of the University of London, when it was constituted as a teaching university. Today, the University of London is made up of 19 institutions and offers the widest range of higher education opportunities in Britain. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe.

London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s spring/summer collections

A world of celebrities and famous people, beautiful and expensive clothes and general fashion glitz.

during this month’s London Fashion Week. So what we will be wearing next spring/summer? We may be in the 21st century but next Spring/ Summer everyone will be wearing styles made popular in the seventies. Retro knitted tank tops and flared trousers made an appearance on the catwalks this LFW thanks to Giles and Henry Holland whose pale denim bell bottom flares adorned with patchwork stars and teamed with platforms were particularly reminiscent of the era. The seventies theme was continued in Topshop’s Unique show, featuring skinny bell bottoms and bell sleeved tops.

Trousers have become popular again this autumn/ winter and designers including Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith continue this trend for 2011. Rock fan Paul Smith revealed that his latest collection was inspired by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix as he took centre stage. The 54-year-old, who started out in the rag trade by selling T-shirts at concerts, also said ‘men’s shirts and a painting sent to me by a fan’ had stimulated his creative juices.

Over half of the collections at LFW featured royal blue proving blue is the new black.

Christopher Bailey delivered a modern, edgy collection for Burberry, with studded, embellished leather jackets and leopard print pieces, paired with seriously high heels. This was a harder, and more fierce collection for the classic label. Issa’s colourful Indian inspired collection was exotic and energising, with a series of stunning cocktail dresses and floor length numbers in sapphire blue, royal purple and bright orange. Accessorised with turbans, and jewellery by Erickson Beamon, this was perfect poolside glamour.

Pringle showcased this trend with fringed tops and shoes, while Betty Jackson pulled out all the stops with her black ostrich feather trousers as did Matthew Williamson with his bejewelled, tasseled

Julien Macdonald- Julien kept things neutral and pretty with little cream and white dresses, fresh and summery with chiffons, and sheers and lots of soft and pretty floral prints. Skirts were full, and frilly,

Maria Grachvogel’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection displays a fresh minimalism focusing on a perfectly paired down silhouette, fluid fabrics and juxtaposing textures. Combining her passion for cut with her rigorous approach to functionality, Maria’s approach is to enhance the female form and create truly desirable clothes. The Osman Spring/Summer 2011 collection celebrated a new confidence in effortless dressing. Taking Osman’s signature architectural sensibilities, the SS11 collection embodies a breezy simplicity which affirms Osman’s sustained perspective in dressing the discerning woman. The collection creates a self assured natural ease, where each piece stands independently, capturing a modern take on a dramatic yet wearable wardrobe. Hurrah for curves! took to the catwalk at Giles Deacon, championing girls with hips and boobs everywhere! The grande dame of British fashion, Vivienne Westwood, has never struggled to mix maturity with fun and her Red Label collection this season was no exception, offering elegant yet funky suits with make-up that looked like the models had been splashed with brightly coloured paint. The elite fashion houses of London were applauded for raising their game during the latest London Fashion Week. And all this despite models walking out without clothes on, save the odd hat, and several tumbles on the catwalk!. London has always been known as a place where new designers can get themselves heard, and French hatmaker Charlie Le Mindu has used this to great effect, hitting the headlines last year for a headdress made of real mice.

This season he sent several of his models out on the catwalk with nothing on, to ensure nothing distracted from their hats. Lending a touch of Hollywood sparkle to Fashion Week was Sarah Jessica Parker, making a front-row appearance at Burberry, joined by Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof and Cat Deeley. The ‘Sex and the City’ actress donned a military style jacket and a brown skirt for proceedings at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, with TV presenters Cat Deeley and Alexa Chung wearing similar ensembles. Other stars to attend the show included tennis stars Andy Murray and Serena Williams as well as socialite Pixie Geldof. Plenty of famous faces lined the catwalks on the fourth day of the extravaganza, including Topshop boss Sir Philip Green and his daughter Chloe. They were at the Erdem show – feted as the designer of choice for first ladies.

“It’s been such a special week again,” said Harold Tillman, head of the British Fashion Council, adding: “In 2012 we’ve got the Olympics... we’ve got to start thinking about that.” Among those helping Tillman think about London’s future will be Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife Samantha, who is hoping to become formally involved with the event from next season. The menswear day at London Fashion Week catered for suit-lovers, comfort-seekers and innovative dressers alike. The tailor Ozwald Boateng’s first London show was an lavish affair, celebrating his 25th anniversary and shown in the Leicester Square Odeon. Models showed off smart casual clothes and suits in traditional shades as well as Boateng’s signature brights – turquoise, sunshine yellow, forest green and purple – and when the show finished they all walked back to Savile Row in a procession.

Alexander McQueen was honoured in a star-studded memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral during London Fashion Week. The fashion designer, who passed away earlier this year, was remembered by friends Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker and Naomi Campbell, who were among 1,500 to sidestep London Fashion Week. The fashion world queued up to pay tribute to the designer who began his career with an apprenticeship at Savile Row tailor’s Anderson & Sheppard. Supermodel Naomi Campbell toasts 25 years on the catwalk Italian stars Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana led the applause at the London Fashion Week party by throwing a star-studded bash at their flagship store in Bond Street, London. Naomi Campbell, 40, proved she still has it after strutting with a troupe of models for guests including Erin O’Connor, Laura Bailey and Philip Treacy.Guests included Claudia Schiffer, Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott and many more. Dolce and Gabbana led the tributes, saying: ‘Besides being one of our favourite models, Naomi is also a great friend and a special woman. ‘What matters to us, and what we would like to celebrate, are the private moments we shared and that allowed us to know her generosity, her funny jokes and being always ready to help those who needed it.’ Campbell was more focused on raising funds for the victims of the flooding catastrophe in Pakistan. Up for grabs were signed T-shirts with 14 limited-edition images from fashion photographers including Steven Klein and David LaChapelle. proceeds going to flood victims via her Fashion For Relief charity. Asked of her favourite memory of the past 25 years, she said, ‘There have been many, many even with all the ups and downs.’ On raising funds for Pakistan, she said: ‘I’m just trying to raise as much as I can. I think not just of this disaster but all the ones over the last three years. The numbers are just unbelievable.’ Hinting family life could be round the corner, Campbell, who dates Russian billionaire Vladimir Doronin, turned coy when asked what was next. ‘You’ll find out soon’, she said. Pregnant Lily Allen shone alongside Naomi Campbell at the celebrations. The Smile star, who is around four months pregnant with boyfriend Sam Cooper’s child, turned up wearing a warming winter coat and thick tights, as well as a tasteful lacy grey shift dress. On the same night, on the same street Kate Moss held her Longchamp party to celebrate the launch of her new bag for them, making it easy for the fash pack to stroll from one party to the next. London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven

London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. London Fashion Week visitors had access to many more designers through presentations, multi-brand and individual showrooms. In addition to the official and off schedule events London Fashion Week has become a focus for a broader base of fashion linked activities with international designers, media and other high profile brands choosing to host their own events during the weeks. The British Fashion Council co-ordinate an events schedule to help visitors experience London ‘the city’ as well as the showcase of British fashion design talents at London Fashion Week. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk Paul Smith is delighted to announce the opening of his first womenswear shop in the heart of Mayfair, London. to Claridge’s iconic art deco design the shop’s sophisticated decoration is influenced by the elegant heritage of its prestigious neighbour. “We are really excited to be opening a beautiful shop in Claridge’s selling clothes and accessories for women and a small selection of gifts for men. I have been a big fan of the hotel for many years and have held several women’s shows there in the ballroom. It’s original Art Deco style really appeals to me so having this shop is very special to me.” Paul Smith , 2010. The decor is elegant and considered. The vertically striped walls in pink and cream draw the eye in; a line of black lacquered cabinets run along the left of the boutique, the texture recurs in the parquet wooden flooring which is highly polished to a bright shine. Two large tiered tables stand in the centre, like decadent iced cakes, draped with white pleated tablecloths and dotted with bags and small trinkets. A brass rail to the right displays hanging garments whilst a corner changing room in bold navy and blue stripes contrasts with the softer tones of the interior. The room is illuminated by two 1930’s Italian Murano glass chandeliers which hang gracefully from a high ceiling. The shop can be approached in two ways; from the glass fronted entrance on Brook Street or the steps leading directly in from the hotel lobby.

Male Breast Reduction words Dr Ravi Jain Can you wear a snug fitting T-shirt and be confident that you look good – or are your T-shirts baggy enough to hide those man-boobs that have appeared? Some statistic claim that up to 80% of men are not happy with large size of their breasts and would prefer if they were smaller. For some of these men, the conidtion is serious enough to affect their self esteem, choice of clothing and even choice of social activities. Can you pass the T-shirt test? It’s not just women who have boob-jobs – gynaecomastia, more commonly known as manboobs or ‘moobs’ can be as much of a confidence sapper, especially when you want to: Look good in a fitted shirt when the meeting gets heated and the jackets come off;
Be able to wear fitted T-shirts Look forward to holidays in the sunshine, without worrying about people staring when you strip off to your swimwear; Gynaecomastia often starts during puberty but for some men it starts later in life. As the years pass, gravity starts to have an effect. Breast reduction is not something that is only for the girls - you don’t have to spend the rest of your life hiding in baggy clothes and holidaying in colder climates – there is a solution! You could, of course, have full surgery – but there is a cost to that in time, discomfort and money. What you may not know is that you can significantly reduce the size of your breasts to normal limits without major surgery and go right back to work the next day without anyone being the wiser – except they’ll think you’ve lost a few pounds and may have been working out. At Riverbanks, we use a minor surgical technique called Vaser Lipo which: Reduces the fat content – permanently,
Tightens the skin, Is relatively painless,

56 | October issue

Has minimal recovery time (hours, rather than weeks)
And costs less than half as much as the surgical procedure. What else will getting rid of your man boobs do? Increase your self-esteem
 Boost your confidence
Allow you to wear the clothes that you want
Give you that smart, professional image that matches your performance. At the multi award winning Riverbanks Clinic your male breast reduction treatment will be provided by Dr Ravi Jain who is an expert in the procedure, using VASER Liposelection – the most effective and safest form of liposuction available today. Dr Jain is also an experienced trainer, and he often teaches other surgeons from around the world in his techniques so you can be sure you will be in safe hands. For a consultation with Dr Jain in Harpenden or Chelsea, please call 01582 762 877. Testimonials “I selected Vaser Lipo as I had read that it was less painful than other methods and the recovery was much sooner. I researched a few different clinics carrying out this procedure but felt Riverbanks offered much more in terms of a personal service rather than just another patient through the door. When meeting Ravi I felt my selection was justified and have been happy with the results ever since. Even after the procedure Ravi has kept in touch to review my progress which confirmed my initial thoughts of a much more personal service. In addition to that his staff make you feel very welcome and at ease from start to finish. Thanks again.” Eamonn, Dublin

“After researching male breast reduction surgery

on the internet, I decided to opt for vaser lipo due to the results possible and minimal downtime during the recovery period. Also a big factor was that I was awake and able to talk to the surgeon whilst the procedure was being carried out. Having decided what treatment to opt for I phoned a few clinics in the UK but picked out Riverbanks as the best choice. This was based on the professionalism of the web site, Best New Clinic Award, staff who made you feel totally at ease and the surgeon Dr Ravi Jain who explained and went through the procedure step by step to ease any doubt the patient may have had. First class clinic. Since my op I have made very good progress and am very pleased with the results.” Paul, Swansea

BUST THE BEAUTY MYTHS By Lisa Haynes

Myths about beauty are like Chinese whispers. The more they’re passed on, the more they become misconstrued and transformed into some sort of miracle cure. While magazines, television and even Twitter bombard us with information about staying beautiful, it’s often the quirky tales passed on by your mum that you recite to yourself in the bathroom mirror each night. But when facts and fairytales blur, your skin can be the victim. “On the whole, the advice shared by generations of women providing tried and trusted cures has held us in good stead,” says Sally Penford, education manager at The International Dermal Institute. “In today’s world, the basis of these cures is still evident. You can find them, or their active properties, in advanced skincare formulations and they allow us to have an arsenal of sophisticated remedies.” Sally reveals whether the beauty wisdom of old still holds true against today’s modern-day lotions and potions. Apply warm vegetable oil on dry cracked skin... “This will certainly help soften the skin,” Sally says. “Sweet almond oil is one of the most common oils to use. It is a light oil that contains vitamins and minerals, proteins and glycosides. Good for most skin types, and especially useful for dry and itchy skin - it also has the added benefit of being anti-inflammatory.” 2010 alternative L’Occitane Almond Supple Skin Oil

£27

Eating chocolate gives you spots... “No it doesn’t - thank goodness!,” Sally reassures, “but it is advisable to keep your processed sugar intake low for an overall healthy complexion”. 2010 alternative Chocolate Heaven Lip Gloss box

£6.99

If you have oily skin you shouldn’t wear a moisturiser... “Not true, all skin types need the added protection moisturisers provide,” says Sally. “There are some fantastic oil-free, oil-absorbing moisturisers packed with antioxidants and antibacterial ingredients which can help heal and prevent future breakouts.” 2010 alternative Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion

£26.40

Your skin will age like your mum’s... “If your mum’s skin is great then you’d hope so. The reality is that genetics will determine factors such as your skin colour and skin type, but can only take credit for approximately 10% of your skin ageing,” explains Sally. “That means we have control of around 90% of how our skin looks and ages.”

Petroleum Jelly makes your eyelashes grow.... “No, it doesn’t. It can, however, give you puffy eyes and even milia [whiteheads],” Sally warns. 2010 alternative RapidLash Eyelash Enhancing Serum, £39.99 (Boots). If your skin is dry or you’re prone to eczema, eat oily fish... “Golden advice that has lasted the test of time,” Sally says. “Omega oils are fantastic to help nourish our skin cells and ward off dry flaky skin.” 2010 alternative Perricone MD Omega 3 dietary supplements

2010 alternative Skin Doctors Zit Zapper

Rubbing lemon onto your skin will lighten it... “Not enough that you’d really notice,” Sally says honestly. “Although lemon has a gentle bleaching effect, it will not make a significant difference on the appearance of your skin. It has been said that Vitamin C can assist with skin lightening.”

£30

If you suffer from breakouts you need to change your pillow case daily... “This is good advice, as it will help keep the skin in a clean environment whilst sleeping. In addition avoid using fabric conditioner on your bedding as the ingredients can be comedogenic (blackhead forming) when in contact with the skin,” advises Sally.

Mobile Laser Teeth Whitening We are one of the UK’s leading providers of laser teeth whitening services throughout the UK. We use the latest technology available to give you the best results. Our proven Treatment is our own White Laser Treatment. A One Hour Visit With our advanced laser teeth whitening treatment, clients only require one visit and the results are visibly lighter for up to 18 months. The treatment is done on your choice of premises and normally takes less than one hour and whilst you are with us our aim is to create a completely relaxing environment. During the simple whitening procedure you will see the immediate benefits of significantly whiter teeth! The Treatment You can be assured that our laser teeth whitening procedure is only carried out by our professionally qualified Mobile Laser Therapist. before

60 | october issue

The procedure is non-invasive and begins with the whitening gel being applied to the front teeth then activated by a laser light from the Mobile Teeth Whitening system. This enables the gel to swiftly penetrate the enamel of the teeth. Each application takes 15 minutes, with a full treatment consisting of two to three 15 minute applications, so it really is possible to achieve dramatic results of up to ten shades lighter in an hour! After an initial consultation with our professionally qualified Mobile Laser Therapist, you can sit back and relax as your dreams of a whiter smile turn into reality! There are just four easy steps to a brighter, whiter smile. Who may benefit from Laser Teeth Whitening? Almost everyone. Today it is quite possible for patients to get the extreme makeover smile formerly reserved for the rich and famous. The tooth whitening system is ideal for patients who

have healthy, unrestored teeth and would like to have a whiter, brighter smile. The laser whitening process is most effective on moderately discoloured teeth. Darker stains, such as those caused by antibiotics, take longer to respond to treatment. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient, depending on the structure of the teeth and the duration of time that the system is used. Is the process safe? Research indicated that whitening the teeth is safe and the solution that is employed has been safely used for many years in the treatment of tooth whitening. We stock many brand names such as Ultradent Opalescence Optident, Nite White ACP and Beyond White Spa. All with MSDS, FDA and PSA approval. How long does it take to see results? IMMEDIATELY and improves over the next 24 hours as the gel will still be active within the after

testimonials Wasn’t really sure about teeth whitening system having only ever been to the dentist for cleaning but was pleasantly surprised how much of an improvement the whiteness in my smile became after treatment, would defiantly recommend ANYONE to have it done. Warren, Windsor, Berkshire

After years of being told by my dentist that I had strong YELLOW teeth and that they would always stay that way I was amazed how clean and white my teeth became after the white smile studio treatment. My teeth became 10 shades whiter and it makes me look so much younger and fresher and I am thrilled. Betty, Hertfordshire

I had a great fear of the dentist but have wanted my teeth whitened for a long time, white smile studios were recommended to me and I can honestly say the technicians are lovely! They were extremely professional, patient and made me feel at ease. If anyone is apprehensive about this treatment I would tell them to go to the White smile studio girls!! mouth area. Results are usually seen after the first 15 minute bleaching session. After the second session every patient will see whiter, brighter teeth. Are there any side effects? Some people experience increased tooth sensitivity during the treatment. Others have reported temporary discomfort, such as gum or tooth sensitivity. These symptoms disappear very quickly. Are you a Dentist? We are not Dentist, our teeth whitening procedure is a “Cosmetic treatment” carries out by trained White Smile Studio technicians. How white will my teeth become? This depends on the level of discolouration but can be as high as 10 shades whiter. The White Smile Studio treatment is particularly effective for removing tobacco, coffee and red wine stains. How long will the results last? We state that on average the treatment last between 12-18months depending on various factors such as smoking and regularly consuming staining agents.

Why is the White Smile Studio treatment such good value? A trained beauty therapist can carry out the treatment as opposed to a relatively expensive Dentist. The White Smile Studio procedure is a purely cosmetic treatment. For further information please call Donna on 07855 855819 or visit the website at www.whitesmilesstudios.com

Katie, North London

WOW!! I love my new teeth!! I can’t stop smiling!! My teeth became 8 shades whiter and it shows, my friends were all amazed and now want to have theirs done, I’m so impressed with the results and never expected them to look so good. Fiona, London

I have recently recovered from a serious illness and decided to treat myself to a bit of a makeover; this included having my teeth whitened. I pursued white smile studios as the technician could come to my house which was great. My teeth to my amazement turned the whitest shade possible and it has given me a much needed confidence boost. I would highly recommend White Smile Studios for their professionalism and for the fantastic results they achieve. Marianna, Hertfordshire

I treated myself to having my teeth whitened and will never ever look back. The first night I went out people noticed straight away. The results are instant and now have that Hollywood smile. Andrea, Barnet, North London

Create your own Sanctuary

Whether you are planning to create a sanctuary of your own to retreat to, or just planning to freshen up your existing suite with some new accessories, Sanctuary Bathrooms have a wide range of products available for you to choose from. Sanctuary Bathrooms specialise in design, supply & installation of bathrooms. They offer high quality products combined with the very best service and advice. To help clients plan and choose their bathrooms they offer a computer aided design service. Sanctuary Bathrooms can also provide a complete bathroom installation service to manage the refurbishment of the client’s bathroom from start to finish and ensure the work is carried out to the highest standard. Their installation service involves one installer working on a room from start to finish over a 10-15 day period, the fact their installers are multi trade means they are not relying on a multitude of different tradesmen and their clients become comfortable with dealing with one fitter within their home. Sanctuary Bathrooms also offer a design and planning service to their clients who already have an installer ready to carry out their work. Their extensive knowledge and experience in bathroom installation enables them to provide an excellent

68 | October issue

after sales service with full technical back up and ensure room designs are not only appealing and functional but work effectively from an installer’s point of view. They can help with both practical and design considerations to ensure a completely co-ordinated purchase and supply.

Bathroom designer, Emily Hyde, runs through some key design considerations when planning a bathroom; “If a room has generous proportions it’s worth considering dividing it into distinct areas; by introducing a steam and shower area or a freestanding bath in to a large part of a room you can reduce the overall space to make a room feel cosier and less expansive. A heated towel rail will predominantly be used for towels; consider the addition of under floor heating to complement this, the under floor heating will help provide a consistent heat within the room. By effective use of lighting you can create an ambient atmosphere; include lighting within recesses either at the end of a bath or within a shower area to add interest.” Sanctuary Bathrooms understand how difficult it can be to visualise the finished project when clients begin to look at the wide range of products available on the market today. Sanctuary Bathrooms take time to understand what their clients would like to achieve, whether it’s to create somewhere to purely relax and unwind with alcoves for candles or somewhere

suitable for a busy family life with ample storage they will endeavour to meet a client’s individual requirements, to create your perfect bathroom.

“If you lead particularly busy lives consider products with clean lines which provide smooth continuous surfaces making an area easy to clean and maintain. Aim to complement the age of a property; for example in an Edwardian or Victorian property add warmth to a room by opting for natural stone tiles. Stone tiles and surfaces are particularly tactile and will add an element of luxury and indulgence to a design.” Sanctuary Bathrooms have carefully selected their suppliers to ensure their clients receive high quality products, with attention to manufacture and design, along with an excellent level of support with product specification and installation guidance. Their selected suppliers include Hansgrohe, Laufen, Bette, Saneux, Svedbergs and Matki to name but a few. From creation to completion Sanctuary Bathrooms will work with you to ensure you achieve your dream bathroom. How loft conversion experts Loftscope can bring a new level of expertise to your property project Deciding where to start when undertaking a project such as adding a whole new floor to your house, is a daunting prospect. That’s why many customers require help from local loft conversion specialists, Loftscope. “We contacted several different specialist loft conversion companies but immediately found one that stood out,” says one happy customer. “From the very first time we met Mark, who runs Loftscope, we felt that he really knew what he was talking about, and that our entire project would be in safe hands. In our initial meeting we were able to look at previous loft conversions and extensions carried out by Mark and his team, which really helped us visualise how our project would eventually look. We can’t say enough about what an excellent job Loftscope carried out at our house. The team produced exactly what was agreed prior to commencing work, and they were on budget and on time, what more can we say?” the customer continues. “The works commenced quickly

and the team were a delight to have working on our house; all very child-friendly, and clean and tidy. We were extremely surprised at how little disruption was caused in our house, even when the team knocked the ceiling through. Loftscope ensured that all the mess and dust was kept to a minimum. To our surprise, they thoroughly cleaned up the area afterwards, and what a fantastic job they did! The team were polite and were on site at 8am every morning without fail, and didn’t crave cups of tea all the time. They all wore shirts with the company logo on, and arrived in Loftscope vans which reassured us that the company were not using sub-contractors to do their work. Mark regularly visited the site, dealing with any issues that arose. Beautiful Barns to Enhance Your Lifestyle and Living Space Interview conducted by Michelle Harris

Barns have a distinctive charm and appeal that sets them aside their brick built counterparts. Looking for ways to extend your home or to develop more land to enhance the quality of your lifestyle and indeed your property or home investment, is a thought process that most of us go through. Brick built solutions are standard but do not have the artistic or aesthetic appeal of a bespoke, oak-framed barn. Being practical and following my natural instinct to investigate, I asked some specialists in the field for their advice. a) Ensure that both façade and more especially the frame is manufactured from oak and not soft wood. b) Check the oak tonnage and that the oak obtained is from a sustainable source. c) Is the oak of ‘beam grade’ quality. d) The importance of the foundations and a dwarf wall to separate the oak frame from the ground. Strategic use of sole plates, a full oak ring beam, and posts traditionally jointed ensures a building that will be structurally able to support a tiled roof. I made enquiries and looked at various websites. I listened carefully to the answers but was the most impressed with Surrey Oak Barns. Why? Because of the clear passion of its director, James Upfold. A meeting was set up for a few days later... James greets me with an open hand and confident smile. Young and dynamic – he clearly has purpose about his work and thrives on what is produced. He has been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building since 1992 and Surrey Oak Barns are registered as a CBC (Chartered Building Company) - the highest accolade for a construction business.

“From planning to completion and handing over the keys, the professionalism of the company was fantastic…. Their full understanding of our requirements was excellent… We would not hesitate to use Surrey Oak Barns again and would recommend them 100%.” Lynne Veitch

“James - You clearly take a great deal of pride in your work. What inspires you and what’s your background?” “I have always been fascinated by barns. With over thirty years within the construction industry, I appreciate and know what it takes to really make a barn with quality and beauty that will be around for centuries.” The portfolio was incredible. Beautiful homes, extensions, bedrooms, offices or even pool houses. Summer out-houses or stand alone buildings with character; garages with an elegant staircase to an above annex. From a visual perspective, each project had clear empathy for its natural surroundings. “And what would you say was your most exciting or challenging project to date?” He pauses for thought, passes me some photographs of Ewhurst Church Room and then explains the background. The complications and tenacity needed to build a barn alongside a Grade I listed Church, with consideration for the environment and also with limited access, was difficult! The construction was closely monitored by Surrey County archaeologists and arboriculturalists.

However James is modest: “It was challenging but the end result absolutely fantastic. A beautiful barn that fits perfectly within the church setting. We’re passionate about delivering a completed project, on time, within budget and exactly to the client’s specification.” Amazed at the range of barns and functionality, I ask him who else works alongside Surrey Oak Barns: “We can bring in professionals from across the entire industry such as arboriculturalists, engineers, architects, interior designers”. We have experience working with planning authorities, relevant governmental bodies, other interested parties and are a partner contractor with local authority Building Control. From the client’s initial thought or aspiration, to a completed project that fulfils their dreams and purpose is to us – a job well done. We will project manage the entire contract and can accommodate pretty much anything our client’s could want or desire. It’s a great feeling when the client’s happy. It’s how we’ve built our barns and our reputation!” “Everyone who works with Surrey Oak Barns takes real pride in their work… The results speak for themselves.” James Fanshawe CBE

Ensure you’re not under-insured! When did you last review the cost of rebuilding your home or the value of your home contents? Over time, we acquire possessions, have children (who acquire their own possessions!) and acquire more valuable belongings. The sum insured for your home can quickly become inadequate – meaning that if you had to claim on your home insurance, you would probably not receive the full amount needed to rebuild your home or replace your possessions. With the nights slowly drawing in it’s important that home owners don’t give thieves the upper hand when darkness falls. Home owners probably stand to lose much more financially than the cost of an insurance policy that provides adequate cover. A-Plan’s Paul Baron said: “Based on a recent survey by Aviva, 86% of UK homes were ‘significantly’ under-insured so it’s important that people take stock of the true value of their belongings in case a worst case scenario should arise.” A-Plan Insurance recommend the following preventative measures (supplied by Hiscox) to householders to help them create rings of security around their property, from the outer edge to the contents inside: Your perimeter Physical barriers such as trees, walls or railings act as a deterrent to criminals and can be supplemented

with gravel paths and motion sensitive lighting around the property, so that thieves know that their arrival can be clearly heard and seen. Your building External doors should be fitted with a deadlock, which should be used even when the property is occupied. On patio doors, a cube lock or key operated bolts should be fitted to prevent them from being lifted or removed. Key operated window locks (in addition to any latches) should be fitted to all vulnerable windows. Your outbuildings Criminals often target outbuildings looking for valuable gardening and sports equipment. When protecting your home, it is important that security is extended to the outbuildings by adequately protecting all doors and windows. Use padlocks and deadlocks on shed and garage doors and consider painting over windows so criminals cannot see the equipment stored inside. Your valuables Jewellery, cash and other high value items should be locked away in a safe – even overnight and especially whilst away on holiday. Avoid taking off jewellery and leaving on bedside tables, in bathrooms or on kitchen work surfaces. It is important that the keys or combination codes are kept secure and away from a safe if you have one. For particularly high-value items or jewellery that is

rarely worn, consider putting them in a safe security box or bank vault. Spreading your items in this way is a sensible precaution to take, as it reduces the total value of goods in your home and could also reduce your premium. Whilst away Timer-operated lights, window blinds or curtains are a good way of giving the impression that your home is occupied when you’re not there. If you’re away for a longer period, it’s a good idea to arrange for a family member or friend to housesit or visit your home regularly to open and close curtains and pick up post and other deliveries. It may be sensible to tell the local police and your alarm company if you are going to be away for a long time. Contact A-Plan Private Clients, Normandy House, Nether Street, Alton GU34 1EA. WEALTH CHECK

A Golden opportunity?

CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNERS

perspective

How to pick a winner…

Every investor wants to achieve a good return on their investments but what defines a good investment fund and how do you find them? Simon Lewis throws some light on the matter. Last month’s article focused on the cost of inertia and the danger of leaving money in investment funds that provide unsatisfactory performance. This time round, we suggest how you can identify a better home for your money. How important is it for a fund to clearly set out its objectives? I think it is crucial, there should be no ambiguity as this could allow a fund manager to stray beyond their expertise. Furthermore, if you are constructing a complex portfolio the remit of the fund must match your requirements. For instance if you want exposure to one geographical area, say Latin America, a more generalist emerging market fund might not, over the long term, satisfy this requirement. The fund may have a high Latin American exposure when you initially invest but there could be a change of direction further down the road if, for instance, the manager pulls out of the region and instead becomes heavily exposed to Asia. Should investors look for consistency of performance over a meaningful period rather than a snapshot of one or two stellar years? Absolutely, consistency of performance over a meaningful period is a good way to gauge competence. Cumulative performance figures can be misleading as you could have a fund which shows a strong 10-year return but all of that return could have materialised in one 12-month period and therefore flatter 9 poor years. Ideally you want to identify a fund that is better than average within its peer group over a number of consecutive years. Is there a benefit in understanding a bit about the company you are entrusting your money to? It is important to be clear about how important fund management is to the company. Companies

that only manage money don’t have other distractions. Success depends on whether they are able to deliver good returns. Consequently they have little option but to commit resources to research and analysis. Ultimately, for a fund to perform well consistently it needs a dedicated group of high calibre people to run it. In any organisation there is competition for resources and if fund management is only one part of a company’s business, there is always a risk that money and people will be allocated to other areas. You often hear the terms ‘star managers’ and ‘investment gurus’. Are these titles always justified and should investors pick funds based on the person at the helm? I am wary of these labels. You do often hear the term ‘star managers’ but sometimes these ‘stars’ perform well because of the strength of the research team around them. If you take the manager away from this support structure they can often struggle. It is therefore dangerous to blindly ‘follow’ a manager as there are no guarantees that he or she can replicate good performance when they move to a competitor. Success is not just about individual flair. It is quality of information that gives fund managers the edge and this quality of information depends on having the people and resources in place. The successful fund managers tend to enjoy better access to the boardrooms of the companies in which they invest (usually because they are significant shareholders); this is a distinct advantage as they are able to look beyond the hard numbers in an annual report. Presumably if you are paying for active fund management, you want a fund manager that invests with conviction and is not interested in hugging a benchmark? As far as investment style is concerned it is important to be sure that you are getting what you pay for. Very active funds tend to have higher running costs. Investors looking for genuine active management should look for a fund that is prepared to be contrarian and follow its own ideas rather than those

of the herd. Beware of paying fees for active management and only receiving only a passive experience. For some funds it would appear to be more important not to be bottom of the table than to be at the top. This is a dangerous philosophy as it means managers are not coming up with new ideas, instead they are just following the index (or what their peers are doing). Most good funds allow managers the flexibility to manage in their own way; by this I mean the manager’s bold investment ideas are not always vetoed by the risk management department. An experienced IFA will know which companies put unfair constraints on managers and effectively put a brake on entrepreneurial activity. Should investors identify what a fund management company’s core strengths are? Yes, I think they should. There are lots of ‘me too’ funds, funds which are launched simply because a particular investment theme or objective is in vogue, not because the management company has any specific expertise. Slick marketing is all very well but if it is not backed up with resources and a serious intent, the fund will probably never amount to much.
