T

he 2011 REWIND FESTIVAL is shaping up to be THIS YEAR’S festival, playing host to 40,000 80s music fans over a sunny weekend in the genteel pastures of Temple Island Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, August 19th-21st. REWIND is dedicated to staging and celebrating the best music of the 1980s; appearances from 80s pop legends Holly Johnson on Saturday August 20th and Human League who close the festival on Sunday August 21st are just two of the highlights in a packed, fantastic 80s Rewind weekend. 2011 Rewind’s lineup includes the legendary Village People who recently entered the Guinness World Records Book with their Sun Bowl appearance as the world’s largest YMCA dance with over 40,000 fans ‘doing the YMCA moves’ while the group performed – Rewind audience...you have been warned! The undisputed Queen of Southern Soul, Candi Staton, whose career has already spanned three decades, will undoubtedly get the 40,000-strong Rewinders singing with her multi-million selling ‘You’ve Got The Love’ and ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ while Scottish funk legends, Average White Band, resident in the USA for many years and celebrating 40 years as world class jazz funketeers, will perform their million selling definitive funk-grooves ‘Pick Up The Pieces’ and ‘Cut The Cake’. The equally legendary Earth Wind & Fire featuring Al McKay will make a rare UK appearance when they take to the Rewind stage – founded by the great Maurice White in the mid 1970s, EW&F’s many worldwide hits include ‘After The Love Has Gone’ and ‘Boogie Wonderland’. We have a look at what makes this such a great local weekend. Embrace the summer months and visit the Chilterns Craft Show this 26-29 August at the beautiful Stonor Park, Henley-on-Thames. This inspiring show will showcase some of the finest handmade crafts to spruce up homes and gardens as well as delicious food and drink, live music, features, displays and a stunning show garden. Up to 250 crafts people from all over the UK will bring you the best of British with handmade gifts and treats. With unusual wares you wouldn’t often find on the High Street, you’ll be able to pick up quirky items that will make real talking points. From ceramics to glass; jewellery to paintings, the show offers something for everyone. The Good Food Live area is a must-visit for foodies and will showcase some of the finest culinary delights in the Specialist Food & Drink Marquee. From cheeses, gourmet nuts, marmalades and handmade chutneys to curry sauces, fudge and chocolates you’ll be able to tickle your taste buds and stock up on goodies to take home. Don’t miss the exciting Live Cookery Demonstration Theatre where you can get inspiration from the professionals who will whip up some mouth watering feasts. Match the perfect wine to your meal at the Tutored Wine Tasting. With a selection of wines from around the world, it’s your chance to pick up tips from the experts and leave ready to impress. Commissioned by Alfred Rothschild to join the other Rothschild family residences in Buckinghamshire, Halton House was completed in 1883 and for 30 years provided the venue for Alfred’s sparkling weekend house parties which attracted the cream of British society, stars of the theatre and even Royalty. On Alfred’s death in 1918, the House and grounds were acquired by the fledgling Royal Air Force and, for the past 90+ years, has served as the Officers’ Mess for Royal Air Force Halton. On Sunday, 4h of September 2011 the House doors will be opened to the public in a rare opportunity to see inside this lasting reminder of Victorian decorative style. Our team of guides, many of them serving RAF personnel, will be on hand to elaborate on the history of the House both in the Rothschild era and in RAF hands. A shuttle bus will run between the House and the Station’s Trenchard Museum, where visitors can learn more about the history of the Station and the RAF’s Apprentice Scheme. Hopefully some sunshine is on the way and if you attend any of the events featured in this issue, have a wonderful time. Until August,

Building on water Some of the country’s foremost house builders, architects and surveyors throw caution to the wind, quite literally, when taking part in their exclusive industry event, the Little Britain Challenge Cup, Europe’s largest commercial sailing regatta, which takes place every September in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. This year’s event, taking place 8th-11th September, received a record number of firm entries during the first week of opening their on-line booking service, something that particularly delighted the Little Britain Chairman, David Smith, from Surrey-based luxury house builders Octagon who comments,

“We see the LBCC as the perfect mix of a wonderful few days’ racing combined with some great networking opportunities. Anybody who is anybody, is here for the four day extravaganza, either bringing down company members to crew, or inviting clients who love to join in for both the racing and partying afterwards. We forsee this being a sell out year, so are urging regulars and newcomers alike, who have yet to register, not to delay, so they can be assured of place in September.” Both those wishing to actually compete, or simply join in from the quayside, there is a jam packed programme of events which will take 1500 guests through from sunrise to the early hours throughout the regatta period.

Everyone is invited to join in the evening parties held at Cowes Yacht Haven. This year, the Friday night extravaganza is Viva Las Vegas, giving guests the chance to dress up in theme, and take part in a fun filled programme of entertainment. This includes getting hitched in the Little White Wedding Chapel, and special guest appearances from ‘Elvis’, ‘Frank’, and the lovely ‘Vegas Show Girls’. The LBCC is more than just a jolly, as it continues to support a number of charities, which, more than ever, need help and support. Not least the GBR Paralympic Sailing Team. This is the LBCC’s last big chance to raise funds for these most magnificent of sailors, to ensure they enter the 2012 Olympics in winning style. Already well into serious training on the Olympic waters of Weymouth, the seven young individuals are determinedly gearing themselves towards victory, despite their varying degrees of disability which range from cerebral palsy through minus a right forearm to a double below the knee amputee.

The LBCC money really does make a huge difference, as these sailors, all professionals and regatta champions, get nothing in the way of handouts from government or councils. This is the time that costs start to soar, as the team require more boats, which come hand in hand with higher maintenance bills. As well as actively overturing sponsors themselves, to help keep their boats in prime condition and in the water, they rely on the generosity of people like the contestants and guests who attend the Little Britain Challenge Cup.

A WORTHY CHALLENGE

W

ell it’s over, it’s finished, and the journey has come to an end. Twenty days of man and machine conquering the Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride! The Reverend Jonathan Gordon from St Mary’s Church Northchurch began his epic bike ride on Tuesday 28 June 2011 in hilly Cornwell to raise funds for the Phakamisa Aids orphans in South Africa. He arrived at John O’Groats at about lunch time on Sunday 17 July where he met 4 or 5 other cyclist completing their journey and watched the brave cyclists who were beginning their cycle to land’s End- not feeling any envy at all! The ever changing, beautiful scenery of Cornwell, Devon, Somerset, Wales, Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and finally Scotland provided Jonathan with an inspiring landscape. Indeed the whole route took him through breathtakingly beautiful countryside which he was able to enjoy from the very different perspective of his bike rather than driving or travelling on the train. It was a very quiet, reflective time and the people he met along the way were friendly, generous and helpful. There were a few incidents 18

J U LY 2 0 1 1

along the way but nothing serious and each time God provided a bicycle repair shop except for the first puncture! While Jonathan was calmly repairing his first puncture next to a field, he realised he had company – 10 bullocks had quietly wandered over to inspect his job!! Outside Cheddar, Jonathan had a blowout and after an half hour stop at the local bike repair shop, he was off on his way again. Due to the weight of the tent, the spokes in the back wheel needed replacing just 20 miles outside of Oban and another friendly cycle repair shop was able to sort it out. The worst was on day 18 (Friday 15 July) when the gear cable snapped 20 mile north of Inverness but 2 miles on he came across a village hardware store where they were able to repair it and off he went fired up it seems as Jonathan did 110 miles that day to Melvich! Jonathan said the best and worst was Scotland- it brings out your competitive side, he notched up nearer to 70-100 miles a day compared to 50 miles a day in England, you can feel the closeness of the finish line but there you also meet the Midges! They were so aggressive and came in waves of millions in their relentlessness. There was also one very large pot hole which upended Jonathan. But the

beauty of the scenery was magnificent and the B & B’s were a very welcome change to sleeping in the tent, especially the wonderful breakfast he enjoyed before setting off. Jonathan said he would recommend the bike ride; it was a great challenge but inspiring and brings change from within you. When asked what advice he would give others contemplating such a journey, he said: do the training and have an excellent saddle called a Brooks B17 standard- guarantee no aches or pains and don’t forget your mobile charger as texts from family and friends were just the best. Jonathan said he was made very welcome at the churches and families he visited especially in Launceston, Ratlinghope, Glazebury, Kendal and Keswick. He also appreciated Ann Clarke (a trustee) joining him for a part of a day’s ride up North. Jonathan expressed his thanks to all who have donated. He said that the generosity of the people has been amazing and certainly went a long way to keep him peddling each day. About £4000 has been raised. Donations can be made by text BIKE33 to 70070 or www.justgiving.com/Jonathan-G ordon1

Halton, Wendover, Buckinghamshire, HP22 5PG RAF HALTON - A HISTORY

As part of the forces involved in the 1913 army manoeuvres, 3 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps deployed to Halton to support the operations of the Household Division. They landed and set up their temporary airfield on what was later to become the Maitland Parade Square. Then it was a pasture that belonged to Mr Alfred Rothschild, of the famous banking family, who had inherited the estate in 1879 and had immediately set about developing it into a pastoral paradise for his lavish weekend entertaining. The house, in which he regularly welcomed royalty, high society and many of the top entertainers of the day, was modelled on a French chateau. From this site 3 Squadron launched a series of reconnaissance sorties and staged the first confrontation between aeroplane and airship. A year later, in 1914, when Lord Kitchener called for his “first hundred thousand” volunteers to augment the professional army, many landowners offered their

estates as training grounds. Alfred Rothschild was one of the first and some 20,000 troops descended on Halton, to live in tents through an increasingly muddy winter as they trained for the slaughter of the Western Front. The weather forced the military authorities to start erecting more durable buildings and, in 1916, the Royal Flying Corps moved into a semi-established camp, having outgrown the capacity of Farnborough for the training of air mechanics. For this task Old Workshops was built in 1917, using German PoW labour, and the current airfield was established. By Armistice Day there were some 6,000 British and Australian male mechanics, 2,000 female mechanics and 2,000 boys being trained by some 1,700 staff. With peace came major changes. Alfred Rothschild had died in 1918 and his heirs were far less affluent and influential. Meanwhile, the newly formed Royal Air Force needed permanent bases and had invested considerable sums in the workshops and accommodation they had built on the estate. After protracted negotiations, the Air

Council purchased the whole property, to house its new No 1 School of Technical Training which moved in from Cranwell in 1919. To house trainees and staff a major building programme produced barrack blocks, messes and an education block to replace the acres of wartime wooden huts. Plans were laid for a permanent hospital to replace the temporary wartime structure, and a headquarters formation moved into Halton House. As he re-organised the RAF to meet the requirements of peace Lord Trenchard foresaw the need to produce a pool of skilled aircraft mechanics and Halton was selected as the home for the Aircraft Apprentice Scheme when this was introduced in 1920. The three-year course he initiated was to train 155 Apprentice Entries between 1920 and 1993 and the training they received was to be thorough and broad-based. Many top-class athletes and sportsmen

were to emerge, notably Don Finlay, who was to represent Great Britain in 3 Olympic Games, the last as team captain, and to return later as Chief Instructor. All could indulge their interests and talents in the Halton Society, which supported acting, debating, aero-modelling, wireless building, expeditions to the battlefields of Belgium and many other activities. Each Wing had a band, behind which it marched between its accommodation and workshops, the “Schools” or the airfield. The high standards of drill instilled by this practice and the proximity of the capital ensured the apprentices’ participation in many major public events, which enhanced the school’s prestige and the boys’ esprit-de-corps. Many of these “Trenchard’s Brats” went on to achieve considerable success and a considerable number rose to the higher ranks during their subsequent careers. The station also conducted many shorter and more specialist engineering courses. These produced adult entrant tradesmen, whose numbers and diversity increased enormously in the build up to and during World War II and produced a considerable proportion of the vast numbers of maintenance crews required during that conflict. World War II brought expansions in activity in other areas too. Flying tasks increased, first with the short stay of 112 Squadron (RCAF) and later with the Cierva autogyros of 402 Squadron, which were used for radar calibration tasks. Also present were the de Haviland Dominies of the communications flight used to ferry staff officers around Bomber Command from its headquarters near High Wycombe. Meanwhile the regular arrival and steady

demolition of the redundant aircraft used for the training of mechanics ensured that the airfield was an extremely busy place. Though the end of the war brought the usual service reductions and retrenchments these were not as drastic as those at the end of World War I. Apprentice training continued and grew during the 1950s and 60s, in response to Cold War requirements and the career prospects offered by the award of an Ordinary National Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering at the end of the course. As Halton’s reputation grew there were many visits from the representatives of other air forces and an influx of foreign and commonwealth trainees. In 1952 the No 1 School of Technical Training received royal recognition when HM Queen Elizabeth presented it with her Colour. It is the only RAF colour or standard to be carried by a non-commissioned bearer and this is regarded by ex-apprentices as their finest accolade. With the 1970s came the RAF’s withdrawal from the East and the

start of its contraction. Technical developments and changes in social aspiration made apprentice training less attractive and less necessary and eventually, with the “peace dividend”, at the end of the Cold War, it was discontinued. All technical training was concentrated at RAF Cosford and, after brief fears of closure, Halton became the RAF’s premier non-technical ground training station. Training organisations were moved in from around the country to provide the courses needed to prepare airmen and airwomen for each stage in their careers. The early 90s saw the arrival of the Police Training School, Secretarial Training, Supply Training and the return of the Catering Training school. In addition, Dental trades such as Dental Technician were soon to add to what was a busy and productive Training Unit. Within the concept of Joint Defence Training, the Police and Secretarial Schools were moved to a different location and, although a joint function both the Supply and Catering Schools remain at Halton. Halton is the home of recruit

training for most airmen trades and is a major gateway for those who want a career in the Royal Air Force. Through life training is a major part of Halton’s output with the Airmen’s Command School teaching leadership and management skills to all non-commissioned personnel when they are awarded promotion. Specialist Training such as Quality Assurance and Environmental Training also takes place at Halton for all three Services. The number of lodger Units has increased over the past few years and includes the RAF Sports Board, Defence Centre for Training Support, a Rehabilitation Unit, Defence Media Operations Centre and many others. The motto: “Teach, Learn, Apply “ is as appropriate to RAF Halton today as it was in 1918. J U LY 2 0 1 1 2 3

local charity was a big winner after the Gerrards Cross Community Association organised its first Summer Fair for over 20 years last month. More than £5,000 was collected after people turned out in their hundreds to enjoy the event, which was held at the Memorial Centre on West Common. Claire Collens, one of the organisers, said: “We had a terrific day, it was a great event for all the family, with so much to see and do and plenty of opportunity for everyone to find out about the many local activities and clubs. “It was wonderful to attract so much support, both from residents and also from the many local traders, individuals and organisations who spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to put the event together, for which we say a big thank you.” It was a chance for everyone to enjoy a wide range of activities, including Scottish dancing and Zumba classes, a treasure hunt and waggiest tail competition, as well as children’s games, a bouncy castle and climbing wall, cake sale and raffle. Guest of honour, the Rt Hon Dominic Greave QC MP spent time chatting to visitors and local celebrity chef Kate Caldesi kept the crowds entertained with a cookery demonstration. Working alongside the Community Association were the Rotary

Local companies providing support included solicitors B P Collins, Nunn Hayward Chartered Accountants, The Brampton Partnership, Fishers, Hamptons International and Tesco, with Traveltime donating two nights in Paris for two people as the first prize in the raffle. Other highlights included a popular dog show sponsored by Greenwood Veterinary Clinic in Chalfont St Peter, while The Chalfonts and Gerrards Cross Camera Club made sure everyone was in focus with a photographic competition. Local band Panic Attack provided a musical backdrop together with Harry Smith and the St James Gospel Choir, Year 12 musicians from the Chalfont Community College and the Royal Grammar School jazz band, Preservation Jazz. The Community Association is looking for able volunteers to help out at its next big fundraising event, a giant jumble sale taking place at the Memorial Centre in Gerrards Cross on Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25. Peter Cox and Richard Drummie of Go West are back at Rewind for the third year running: “Appearing at the Rewind Festival 2010 was one of the highlights of our year,” says Peter, “and we can’t wait to rock the crowd again in 2011. The atmosphere is fantastic – I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend! We’ll be playing our best known songs of course such as ‘We Close Our Eyes’, ‘King of Wishful Thinking’ and ‘Don’t Look Down’.” Alan Gorrie, bassist with Average White Band adds: “It’s a unique opportunity for us because we haven’t done a festival of this kind before and to be asked to be part of a stellar lineup of late 70s and 80s groups is a real honour! We’re really looking forward to Rewind and will be performing the hits you’d expect to hear such as ‘Cut The Cake’, ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, and ‘Let’s Go Round Again’. Greg Kane who, together with his brother Pat, make up Hue & Cry comments: “We are really looking forward to playing the Rewind Festival as are the rest of our band. The weekend will bring back a few fantastic memories without a question of a doubt! BUSINESS IS BLOOMING FOR RICKMANSWORTH’S

HIDDEN GEM F

our years ago a local florist opened a humble Flower shop. Since then business has blossomed and Ryan Wicks – the man behind Love Flowers – has expanded into his own, quirky boutique, on the back of Rickmansworth High Street. Ryan said: “When I first started the business, I had two part-timers and sold mainly flowers and pot plants. I now have six members in my team and boast outdoor plants, shrubs, trees, garden furniture and accessories. “I have a great team, who I consider to be my family, and we all work hard – often working through the night to complete the orders. We all like to ensure the orders are completed to time and of the high standard our customers have come to expect of us.” The rapport Ryan has with his customers and staff means that the days are often entertaining and the arrangements are always fun and imaginative. This friendly and efficient business ethic means the florist has built a strong reputation and client base. “We have an increasing number of contracts with many businesses local to us and some reaching as far as London, whereby we fulfil weekly orders for reception areas, churches, office displays, shop fronts and show homes. I have found that more and more businesses are warming to the idea of displays for the office and not just for functions.” As well as catering for weddings, funerals, offices and other events, Love Flowers provides beautiful arrangements for the home. Ryan said: “We encourage our customers to bring in their vases and choose the flowers and how much they would like to spend. The garden Players

CONTINUE TO GROW ON PREVIOUS SUCCESSES WITH NEW ‘DREAM’. WORDS BY IAN T CAMERON

D

espite the onset of one of the wettest nights of June, The Garden Players once again entertained a stalwart and ( on Friday night ) damp audience with one of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies, A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. This was performed over five nights and included the evening of Midsummer’s Night, and in the process raised in excess of £9000 for The Child Bereavement Charity, a national charity based in Saunderton near High Wycombe. Using the facilities of Steve and June McAdam’s lovely Beaconsfield garden, this group of local friends and thespians threw themselves into the enjoyment and companionship, that only a tight knit group of fully committed and talented players can achieve. The Garden Players pay tribute to the help and support given to them from local businesses and sponsors, the help of the neighbours who donated their driveways and their patience, their electricity and approval, in enabling us, once again, to obtain the requisite permits for the performance and the attached services. 34

We spent the weekend before our performances installing sound and lighting and creating the set, using organic materials for the seats and Titania’s Bower, “tree stumps and branches”. Sunday was spent in rehearsal, trying out all the costumes, laying out the seats, and most important, positioning the port-a-loo ! During the week of the show, we were fortunate to have lots of volunteers helping to direct traffic, sell raffle tickets, run the bar, etc etc. To them, thank you for the smooth running of each evening. The actors included some old stalwarts, as well as introducing some new young blood portraying the lovers and the fairies, whose energy and enthusiasm was a joy to behold. Let it not be thought that the older and more experienced participants fell short in any way, far from it, and it was a joy to watch those principals, whose experience shone through, to bring the humour and grandeur of Shakespeare’s writing to a responsive audience. Thanks to an active cast and networking at its finest, we were sold out very quickly and invited the disappointed, to attend the

dress rehearsal for a voluntary donation to our chosen charity, of £10, which they were delighted to do. Responses from our audiences and actors have always been positive and the results can be seen for themselves. Most nights were fine, weather-wise, and the atmosphere in the garden was always excellent. The audience reaction on Thursday was coloured by a team of very exuberant schoolgirls, who absolutely loved it. Friday was the worst for rain, but all credit must go to our full house who stayed the course. We think we lost 15 at the interval. To all of you, many many thanks. Saturday, the final night was a lovely, warm evening and the bar did good business. Our dual objectives were to put on a high quality show and raise a significant amount for the Child Bereavement Charity. Altogether there was a feeling of satisfaction for our fund raising, complete satisfaction and pride in our performance, and additions to our friendship book, from the cast and the audience. We were so fortunate in the audience

responses, both on the evenings of the play and also afterwards by e mail, texts and phone calls. At the time I wrote what I felt about the play, and in a very vain fashion I repeat it here along with just a few of the many comments received : “I can honestly say I have never worked with a more professional, talented and lovely bunch of people. You all should be incredibly proud of what you have achieved, and I am proud to say that I was part of your production. I would go a long way to work with each and every one of you again. We are extremely grateful for the continued use of St Michael’s church hall and St Teresa's Borlase hall in Beaconsfield and St Paul’s Combined School’s hall in Wooburn Green and St Dunstan's church hall in Bourne End for our rehearsals, and to all the unsung supporters and workers who gave us of their time. We have been asked by many of our supporters about our next project and there will be an announcement about this on our website at http://thegardenplayers.org.uk/1.ht ml in the autumn.

adies Day makes a welcome return to Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday 30th July 2011, for its fourth year, in the event which is fast becoming the cricket calendars ‘must attend’ social event of the year. This hugely popular event, when ‘Lord’s’ becomes ‘Ladies’ for the day, sees Middlesex County Cricket Club open its gates for a unique event, which brings together the excitement of first class cricket with all the essentials of a socialites calendar event in the beautiful surroundings of Lord’s, the Home of Cricket. Middlesex CCC welcomes and invites ladies free of charge into Lord’s to join them for this memorable event, to enjoy

and relax with an array of pampering activities that are guaranteed to give you a truly fabulous and memorable day out! Dress up in your finest summer dress, adorn yourself with your favourite seasonal hat and head to Lord’s for a celebration of summer cricket. Lady attendees, dressed in their summer attire, and their accompanying gentlemen dressed in jacket and tie, will be invited to join the Middlesex Committee for a free champagne reception in the beautiful Harris Gardens from midday, where the MCC will once again be laying on a sumptuous summer barbeque. For those ladies less interested in the matter of

the First-Class cricket being played out on the Lord’s hallowed turf, there will be the opportunity to relax and be pampered, as manicurists, pedicurists, masseurs and beauty therapists are on hand in the Harris Garden throughout the day to help you relax and make the most of your day in the beautiful garden surroundings. To celebrate Middlesex’s ongoing charity partnership with Breakthrough Breast Cancer, there will also be collections going on for the charity throughout the day, and an information desk will be manned to offer advice and information about the charity and the great work they continue to do in their quest to find a cure for breast cancer. As always, the ‘Best hat’ competition will be hugely popular, so make sure you pull out all the stops and come wearing your finest millinery creations, as

prizes will be awarded to the best hats of the day. If the off-field entertainment isn’t enough for you, there’s also the small matter of a First-Class cricket match going on, out in the middle, so if you’d like to combine all the fun of Ladies Day, alongside your opportunity to watch Middlesex in action, then take your place in the stands and enjoy all that’s great about the First-Class game, as Middlesex take on Derbyshire in an LV= County Championship Division Two match. All in all, Ladies Day is set to be a fantastic and enjoyable cricketing experience for all cricket lovers, gents and ladies alike, so come along and enjoy the fun of Ladies day at Lord’s, the Home of English Cricket, and don’t miss out on the cricket calendars social event of the year. www.lords.org

PROMS...

THE WORLD’S GREATEST CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

FRIDAY 15TH JULY TO SATURDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2011 THIS IS THE 117TH YEAR OF THE PROMS AND STILL IT REMAINS TRUE TO ITS ORIGINAL AIM: TO PRESENT THE WIDEST POSSIBLE RANGE OF MUSIC, PERFORMED TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS, TO LARGE AUDIENCES. he first Proms concert took place on 10th August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly built Queen’s Hall in London. While Newman had previously organised symphony orchestra concerts at the hall, his aim was to reach a wider audience by offering more popular programmes, adopting a less formal promenade arrangement, and keeping ticket prices low.

T

The 100th Proms season took place in 1994 and the festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year, ever widening the range of symphonic and operatic music presented. The BBC Proms continues to welcome leading international performers whilst showcasing the best of the British music scene, including the BBC’s own orchestras and choirs. The BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and many are broadcast on BBC television and all broadcasts are available via the BBC iPlayer for 7 days. Seasoned enthusiast or complete newcomer, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when faced with the fascinating variety of concerts that make up the BBC Proms 2011 season. There’s something to appeal to everyone, with 74 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, 12 Chamber Proms at Cadogan Hall plus numerous other special events to choose from. The Proms Plus series incorporates over seventy events -

talks, films, family events and more. A further highlight of the season is the world-famous Last Night of the Proms, bringing the season to a spectacular end on Saturday 10th September with celebrations taking places across the UK. BBC PROMS IN THE PARK, HYDE PARK, LONDON SATURDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2011 Now in its sixteenth year, Proms in the Park is still one of London’s most popular events. While it lives up to its reputation of a fun Last Night party celebrating British tradition, it equally encapsulates the spirit of the Proms, with leading international artists and an all-embracing programme, introducing new works alongside much-loved classics and bringing together the different themes of the season. This year Edward Gardner leads the festivities for the first time, conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, with starring roles for pianist Lang Lang and soprano Susan Bullock. RICH

LIST

2011

he Sunday Times Rich List is the definitive guide to the nation’s wealth. The 23rd edition of the high profile and much anticipated list hit the newsstand on in May. Further exclusive bonus content was rolled also online over the next month.

T

As well as the perennially popular main supplement, this year’s Rich List will had greater accessibility, a dedicated iPad edition as well as exclusive content online for digital subscribers. This year for the first time the information will be fully interactive, creating a uniquely personal and even more useful experience for The Sunday Times customers. On May 8 the 104 page supplement listed the 1,000 richest people in the UK as well as Ireland’s 250 richest. A perpetual favourite with customers and advertisers, each of the entries are profiled and there are specific tables for the music millionaires, the richest in fashion, the wealthiest hedge fund managers and the top political donors. The list appeared simultaneously on www.thesundaytimes. co.uk/richlist2011 as part of the online subscription - available to new users for just £1 for the first 30 days, subscribers received access to both The Times and The Sunday Times websites, award-winning iPad editions, as well as Times+ membership benefits.

The print campaign plotted the financial back stories of various rich listers against iconic portrait shots. Additionally there will be a concerted multimedia campaign encompassing PR, eCRM, digital and search. On May 15th the publication of The Sport Rich List. This innovation first appeared with great success last year. The 2011 version will included the 100 richest sportsmen in Britain and Ireland, the 40 richest young sportsmen, the world’s richest tennis players and golfers plus interactive tables of the richest owners and managers in British football. There is also be a table of the highest paid football players, graphics of Britain’s richest football team by position based on current players and a listing of the wealthiest British F1 drivers over the years. This will appeared as a stand-alone supplement within The Sunday Times as well as online at www.thesundaytimes. co.uk/richlist2011 and through iPads. Digital subscribers were able to access the 2,000 wealthiest in the UK (the 1,000 listed on May 8 and the 1,000 below them in riches). This fully interactive database allowed searching of all entries by region. There is also live tables for the richest women in the top 2,000 plus extended data from The Giving Index.

A first for the list in May, saw the online publication of The World’s Richest 200 as well as Europe’s Richest 100. Available to all digital subscribers these international listings include biographies for every entry and fully interactive tables. There is also a facility to search the UK online list for the richest people by country of origin. The lists are based on identifiable wealth (land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies), and excludes bank accounts (to which the paper has no access). Will Handley, Head of Marketing for The Sunday Times says: “The popularity of The Sunday Times Rich List never wanes. It is now deemed the definitive guide to wealth in the country and we are always delighted with the amount of attention it generates. Year on year the List goes from strength to strength and the introduction of the global list for our online subscribers is the latest innovation to the franchise. Publication of The Sunday Times Rich List is a key milestone in our editorial calendar and we’ll be supporting the edition with a heavyweight multi-media campaign”. The Sunday Times Rich List 2011 is compiled by Philip Beresford, the leading authority on British wealth, and Colm Murphy, the leading expert on wealth in Ireland. It is edited by Ian Coxon. or centuries London has been considered ‘the place to be’ and over the yyears ears little has changed to diminish its status as the luxur y capital of the world. There are curr currentl ently around 28 billionaires living in London and mil millio lionaire businessmen, property ttyycoons, entrepreneurs, celebrities and old nobilit nobilityy continue to want to live here over other cities in the world. But what is it about London that continues to draw in the superrich? In a world rivaled with incredible cities, ffrrom Paris’s sophistication, to D ubai’s exotic climates to New Yorks exuberant extravagance, just what is it about London which keeps city? y? millionaires flocking to the cit W hat is it that makes London playgr yground? the millionaire’s pla One of the major attractions of London is its location and there is no denying that London is perfectly situated amongst the world’s major cities. London is just a short train awayy fr awa f rom shopping in Paris or the slopes of Courchevel or St Moritz. It ’s just a private jet flight fr f rom the Casinos of a Monte Carlo or the extravagance of Moscow. Alternatively, should business dictate, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai and the USA are easily reachable. It is partly down to its geographical location that has helped position London as the financial capital of the world. Indeed more than 100 of Europe’s largest listed companies and the European headquarters of numerous major banks and prof ofessio essional ser vices. The time zone of London is also ver y business-fr business-f riendly, as working hours overlap those of the business districts of the world. Of course, there is more to life life than business and many would argue that culture and entertainment are the big plus points of the capital ffor or those seeking a millionaire lif lifest estyyle. est With its stunning architecture, unparalleled restaurants, private members clubs, gala dinners, designer shops, galleries and theatres - London really is a mecca for for high societ societyy. Take London’s art scene for for example. Throughout the world the capital is considered to be the dominant for force in contemporar y art, off offer ering so many choices when it comes to galleries and museums. F Frrom the Tate and Saatchi galleries to The Royal Academy demy,, Londoners have access to some of the most stunning collections in the art world. For those looking to enhance their own private collections, London also hosts globally famous auction houses fr f rom Sothebys and Bonhams to Christies. These venues are constantly breaking records, with collectors ready to pay pay millions of historical objects and works of fine art. London’s reputation as a gastronomic for force to be reckoned with has been growing steadily over the past decade -

with it ’s Michelin starred restaurants and reputation for for attracting the finest chef hefss in the world. Popular eateries include Alain D ucasse at The Dorchester, Le Gavroche and Ciprianis or C London as it is now called. ter dinner private members clubs are a popular After Af relaxation stop for for those looking for for refinement and exclusivit lusivityy. Indeed London’s West End is the birthplace of members-only establishments and some of these clubs date back to the 18th centur y. F Frrom The Arts Club to or centuries the world elite have been wining and W hites, ffor dining at these age old establishments. Upmarket casinos are also a popular hotspot for for the superrich with Aspinalls and Les A Club being amongst the most fr f requented. One of the most appealing things about London is its many open spaces. My favourite over-all space in London is Hyde Park. W hen the city all becomes too much, Hy Hype pe Park is the perfect space to go and relax. The Serpentine Summer Parttyy is also a great event to rub shoulders with London’s rich and famous. But London’s high class societies are not just about exclusivity - they also generate millions of pounds for charity through philanthropic ventures, balls and events. For instance, just recently, I attended a charit ityy auction at Sotheby ’s auction house in London for for the David Rattray Foundation. O ver £600,000 was raised for for the charity. Elton John hn’’s W hite Tie and Tiara Ball is also a fantastic event that raises money for for those affected affected by HIV and Aids. Each year, the ball takes on a differ different theme but the dress code remains the same: W hite Tie & Tails for for Gentlemen, and Tiaras and Ball Gowns for for Ladies. Great Ormond Street also host splendid events as do a number of other worth thyy charities and foundatio foundations. here is an exciting world that lies beneath the feet of Londoners – underground crypts, deep level shelters, rivers and the most familiar of all, the underground rail system used by millions everyday. But few are aware of the legacy of the 148-year old underground system – the oldest in the world – or its abandoned and disused stations and associated areas. Peer into the gloom as you are whisked between Knightsbridge and South Kensington on the Piccadilly Line and you may catch a glimpse of the Brompton Road station, closed in 1934. Or between Camden and Kentish Town on the Northern Line, the South Kentish Town station which closed in 1924. It was the knowledge that this disused but historical legacy existed that excited one man to begin the work of creating a project for London that would utilise these underground locations as venues for leisure and entertainment activities. Two years ago, entrepreneur and ex-banker Ajit Chambers set up The Old London Underground Company to investigate the possibilities of creating something really special and exciting for both Londoners and the millions of tourists that visit each year. “When I ďŹ rst discovered what potential there was for London, I could hardly believe that no one was exploring the idea,â€? says Chambers. “True, there was a lot of initial scepticism because of issues around the engineering considerations, safety, and security but by slowly, surely and methodically, addressing all these and building a consortium of expertise to ďŹ nance and deliver the project, people are becoming as excited as I am about what the company is doing. There is huge interest from private investors, so it won’t cost a penny of public money – which was one of Mayor Boris Johnson’s provisos – and the business model creates an income stream that will go directly back to the City

of London for further investment.â€? Interestingly, the London Underground would hardly exist at all if it hadn’t been for the tenacity of an American, Charles Tyson Yerkes, who took one look at the chaos that was London’s streets and promptly started investing in an underground rail system. “And he had serious competition from another American ďŹ nancier, JP Morgan, too,â€? laughs Chambers. “The powers that be back then thought it was rather a mad idea, and although we’ve had a bit of that too, it hasn’t put me o.â€? The Old London Underground Company now has a meeting scheduled with the Mayor to present the ďŹ nal, 5D plans for the go-ahead, with all the safety, security, engineering and ďŹ nance details in place. “It’s been a long two years’ slog, but we are nearly there, so expect to see the ďŹ rst sites open in time for the Olympics next year,â€? says Chambers. Q&A WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST DR SHAMEEK POPAT

A

s summer creeps forward and the children wind down from school, here are some top tips for the care of your children’s teeth and how your dentist can help look after your children’s teeth. BABIES Baby’s first tooth is a celebrated occasion and the perfect time to start ensuring healthy teeth for a lifetime. Baby teeth are like place holders for the adult teeth, and are susceptible to cavities, especially for babies put to bed with other than water in their bottle. Carefully wipe your infant’s new teeth and gums with a piece of damp gauze or a washcloth, then move to a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush. If your child is six to twelve months of age, we can discuss teething problems, assess the need for fluoride supplements, and review the use of a dummy and the effects of thumb sucking. We’ll outline some of the dangers of oral injury to a child’s mouth as they learn to crawl. TODDLERS The first of many regular dental visits should be between two and three years of age. Never make the dentist out to be the “bad guy”! Express excitement that your child is grown up enough to visit the dentist who is someone who will care for their teeth for their lifetime. Play “dentist” ahead of time, and treat the visit as a stepping-stone of which they can be proud. By the time kids start walking, they can start learning the ABCs of brushing. If they learn that brushing and flossing are fun, they’ll develop good dental habits for a lifetime. TOOTHPASTE CHOICES: Choosing the right toothpaste is a good place to start. It’s a good idea to use a pea-shaped amount of a mild-tasting toothpaste. Remember that fluoridated pastes should be kept where kids can’t reach them without your help. TOOTHBRUSH SHOPPING: Next, take your child shopping to pick out a fancy kid-sized brush. At home, set up a little stool so your child can look in the mirror “eye to eye” and reach the faucet without stretching. BRUSHING TECHNIQUE: Brushing takes time to learn so go easy! Good brushing takes at least two minutes, which may test a child’s fickle attention, so work up to two minutes gradually. Try brushing along with the kids and make it a game. A nursery rhyme can also help. Here’s one to try out: Up like a rocket, Down like rain, Back and forth and like A choo choo train PRE-TEENS Usually between the ages of four and six (sometimes even earlier), your child will start losing baby teeth. During this period, we can tell you what to expect as adult teeth begin to erupt. If thumb sucking persists, we can provide suggestions on how to discourage the habit. Healthy eating becomes increasingly important as your child grows. We can counsel you on a regular basis with practical, age-related advice, as well as offer health information to help prevent serious oral health problems in your children. By age six or seven, children are old enough to brush twice a day on their own. If you’ve made it a high point in the day, they’ll do it with pleasure! And, of course, they’ll reap the benefits of a healthy habit and smile ... for a lifetime At this stage pit and fissure sealants are a simple and effective way to stop the decay that causes cavities, especially in kids’ teeth. Sealants work best protecting new teeth which makes them ideal for children. Sealants give those teeth some protective armour through the ages of seven to fifteen when children are most vulnerable to tooth decay. Here’s how they work;

WHAT IS A DENTAL SEALANT? A dental sealant is a liquid plastic material that hardens to form a shield over the chewing surfaces of the teeth. It is applied to decay-prone surfaces of the teeth, usually the back molars and pre-molars. WHY GET SEALANTS? Sealants keep out the germs and food that cause tooth decay. Food and germs can get stuck in rough, uneven surface areas where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. Germs in the mouth change the sugar in food to acid which can start a cavity in the tooth. Sealants prevent decay from ever starting. WHO SHOULD GET SEALANTS? Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in and are fully erupted, before decay has a chance to attack the teeth. But adults can still get decay, especially those patients afflicted with dry mouth, which affects about one-third of the adult population. Sealants also protect worn and sensitive surfaces on adult teeth. HOW ARE SEALANTS PUT ON? The tooth is cleaned, dried, and prepared for bonding with the sealant. When applied using a paint-brush-like tool, the liquid sealant hardens in just a few seconds. You can eat and drink immediately afterwards Depending on your child’s chewing patterns, the sealants can last from six months to several years. We will check them at every appointment to make sure they are still doing their job properly. Sealants aren’t designed for areas between the back teeth or for front teeth. And teeth that already have fillings or decay cannot usually be sealed. It takes only a few minutes to apply the sealant, and give your child’s teeth years of insurance against decay. There’s no drilling or freezing. Remember – sealants don’t take the place of brushing, flossing, and healthy eating. But using them is a proven and painless technique that can help preserve your child’s smile for a lifetime. TEENS Teens that need braces can finally stop worrying about how they’ll look and about how their social lives will suffer. Once upon a time when train track braces were the only option, tangled metal smiles rated right up there on the nightmare scale. That was before Invisalign®. Invisalign is a proven method for straightening teeth using a series of custom-made, nearly undetectable aligners. Each aligner is precisely calibrated using the latest 3D computer technology, and manufactured to custom-fit over your teeth and gently move them through every stage of your treatment … invisibly. Ten Things Teens Like About Invisalign: • They are invisible – no one can tell they’re being worn. • You can keep smiling at parties, weddings, and on dates. • They are simple to put on and take off. • You can eat and drink just like normal while in treatment – just remove the aligners. • They are comfortable – no metal wires or sharp brackets. • You can wear them playing sports, woodwind and brass musical instruments. • If you lose an aligner, it can be reproduced. • Treatment is finished faster with fewer appointments. • Fitting is high-tech and much more efficient. • Using virtual technology, you can see your straight teeth – in advance Always be sure to seek the advice of a qualified Orthodontist for any issues on braces.

t’s up there on the list with pulling teeth and listening to Celine Dion on repeat. But while hair removal may be tiresome, it has its rewards. Think smooth, glistening pins to rival Cameron Diaz rather than Julia Roberts’s infamous hairy armpits. The notso-Pretty Woman’s action of sporting furry underarms topped a recent poll of Brits’ summer eyesores, closely followed by unkempt bikini lines, in a survey by foot-care brand Scholl. The average woman in the UK spends a whopping £3,618 on removing hair over her lifetime, according to Boots’ research, and the importance of this thankless task heightens once high summer arrives. So if you’ve worked on your tan and beach body, don’t let excess hair turn you into a horror story. Bare your skin with pride and be fuzz-free and sexy this summer. 4/AB /<2 >/7<:3AA

Hair-free heaven may only last a couple of days but the razor is still king of hair removal. It’s a painless and super-speedy way to achieve instant smoothness. Opt for a razor with five blades for the closest shave possible, and moisturising bars to smooth as you glide. Beauty therapist and hair removal expert Arezoo Kaviani says: “Change your razor regularly as a blunt blade will aggravate the skin, and don’t shave legs in a very hot bath or shower as this can cause irritation. Prone to ingrown hairs? Exfoliate for the next few days after shaving and try a soothing solution that aids in rebuilding bump-free skin without any unsightly redness. If your shaving technique resembles Edward Scissorhands,

halt the razor cuts and reach for a hair removal cream. The results last as long as shaving, it’s pain-free and many of the creams are formulated to simultaneously hydrate your skin. ;=<B6A =4 4@332=;

Make no bones about it, waxing stings but you can enjoy a fuzzfree body for a beach-friendly three to five weeks afterwards. You’ll also find hair grows back finer and more sparse with each wax. “For best results, rub an ice cube over the area you plan to wax, dry your skin thoroughly and then begin waxing, Kaviani recommends. “This will quickly cool your skin making the hair easier to remove in one go. It’s also a good idea to use an ice cube afterwards, to help soothe any irritation and stop red bumps from developing. To prolong that just-shaved feeling after any removal technique, hair-minimising creams are currently booming on the beauty shelves. Available as a cream or spray, hair inhibitors are formulated with active ingredients to help slow down hair regrowth and, with regular use (two to four times a week), stubble reappearance should feel softer and finer. If you despise the in-between stage with waxing but can’t stand the quick hair return of shaving, epilation might be for you. The latest gadgets boast thousands of plucks-per-minute to minimise the ‘ouch factor and can grab hold of hair as small as a grain of sand. 6/7@ 4@33 4=@3D3@

CREATING YOUR DREAM KITCKEN

TOP TIPS FOR PLANNING AND STYLING A KITCHEN

C

Creating your dream kitchen can be very exciting yet requires careful consideration. As the hub of the modern home, kitchens should be suited to the needs of the whole family, fully functional yet stylish. Used for a whole host of activities from cooking to homework, entertaining and eating, there are more demands on this space than any other within the home. At John Lewis of Hungerford we have specialised in designing and making painted and natural wood kitchens for almost 40 years and Charlotte Hill-Baldwin has some top tips to share with you. “The most frequent question our designers are asked is what the best steps are to creating the perfect kitchen. While most homes have a lot of similar requirements from their kitchen, each family is unique therefore thorough planning is essential. 72

J U LY 2 0 1 1

• Consider all that you love about your current kitchen and what would make it better for you. While the basic layout of your kitchen will dictate which style works think about the layout you like most – U shaped, open planned, L shaped or galley. • Don’t get caught up in rules for planning a kitchen! The positioning of the key elements should not be made into a hard and fast rule. The important and most efficient aspect is to make sure you have a good preparation space between the hob and the sink while maximising storage space. • Think of a kitchen purchase in the same way as you would buying a car! Look for superior quality products. Good cabinets made to fit your kitchen may mean ordering bespoke units from a specialist company but rest assured it will be well worth it in the long run as your

kitchen will be exactly to your requirements. A good kitchen will last you a lifetime and should work for you by making everything as effortless as possible. • Speak to a good designer to talk through your ideas, budgets and inspiration; their input will enable you to think differently about the options open to you. They will also offer some useful tips when it comes to considering simple yet often overlooked functions such as having ample space for dishwashers and fridges to open. Do ask about the in house installation service and what is involved as this will be the last and most important part of your purchase. A fabulous kitchen poorly installed would be incredibly disappointing so the relationship that the designer has with the installer is important. • Style stems from individual taste and this will be reflected

in the colour choices and textures as well as the type of furniture you choose. Clever use of colour can pull a scheme together or help create zones if that is what you need. Mix and match colours for a fresh look or simply inject some colour with a glass splash back in a neutral scheme. If you intend to sell on in the next few years, select a more classic attractive style.” John Lewis of Hungerford’s Beaconsfield showroom is located on the popular shopping street of London End, and is one of twelve showrooms in Great Britain.

I remember hearing from my ancient grandmother that the older you get the quicker the time goes. She was the same grandma at whose knee I would sit, night after night during those austere and disciplined days of WWII, listening to her relate the difference between porcelain and pottery, base and precious metals, soda and lead glass and so on in my father’s antique shop while he was away in the army. She actually posted a notice on the shop door saying that business was restricted because “My son has been called to His Majesty’s Colours”. I don’t think my dad saw his situation in such a noble light as he battled with the enemy and rough weather on troop ships in the North Atlantic. Anyway my grandma seemed to make sense with most of what she said so how could time go more quickly? A day is a day after all. But now I have learnt two things; one is that everybody’s grandma said the same and two is that it’s true. I blame it today on the television and radio, advertising future programmes a week ahead. It’s only Tuesday and the weekend looms. But what did previous generations base it on? Whatever, this summer is just whizzing by and a funny old time it’s been so far. Weather, business, world affairs, economies all very mixed. And the antiques trade is no different. But there have been some interesting moments and opportunities. Most recently we had the Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair, where I was filming for my new DVD ‘John Bly’s Beginners’ Guide to Collecting Antiques’. The Fair has been running consistently for 38 years and this one in mid-June was as glamorous as any. (If you missed it there is a winter version in November.) The standard of exhibit was high throughout and the organisers showed an innovative blend of ancient and modern. Recently it has become fashionable to mix 74

Global Partnership Family Offices. This is a private networking company for private banks – Family Offices. If you are sufficiently wealthy to have your own exclusive banking facility or share one with a few other families you will know that their managers are constantly seeking information on goods and services for the benefit of their clients. John Lidster’s company supplies these contacts and also holds a series of seminars for such people to meet. the two – interestingly just as most people did in the 18th and 19th centuries – and the organisers have done exactly the right thing to go with the flow of market trends. When times are difficult far-sighted people see the alternative, and the current series of Antique Shows at Olympia is not the first example in our trade. Back in 1928, when things were far from easy The Daily Telegraph held an Exhibition of Antiques and Works of Art in that magnificent building. It was a massive affair with 160 Stands, 36 different categories and numerous committees under 38 Vice Presidents. And the Catalogue – shown here – cost Two Shillings and Sixpence or Half a Crown. That’s 30 old pence when beer was 2 pence a pint. While we are talking about money I think I have said in the past that I work as a consultant with a Wealth Manager, Richard Broughton, a member of the St. James’s Place Partnership. A couple of months ago Richard introduced me to Jonathan Lidster whose company is

I am delighted to say that I have been asked to speak at one entitled The Alternative Investment Club in October, although I have always believed that antiques and works of art are the original asset investment, rather than an alternative, being at least of some intrinsic value unlike nutmeg, tulips and other people’s companies. There is a not too tenuous link from this to Richard’s latest introduction. The company is called Family Business Place whose Manager and Creative Director is Anita Brightley-Hodges. This is a company that brings together family businesses. The house magazine makes fascinating reading for anyone in that situation, for you realise that you are not alone in coping with family life within a working environment. Furthermore, family businesses large and small, and covering a vast spectrum of trade, are brought together with one thing in common with a benefit to all. Family Business Place holds an annual conference called Family Ties where selected representatives from family businesses are invited to speak. As this year’s speakers are described as superb it is with deep embarrassment that I report that I am one of them, also in October, at the Royal College of Surgeons, the day after I talk for Jonathan Lidster.

Now the real reason for my telling you all this is because two most interesting enquiries have just come to my desk, one from Anita Brightley-Hodges. When we met she described an old china pot, a gift from her mother. I imagined a chamber pot of the sort commonly used in the dining rooms of the 18th century. (Rather than leave the warmth and company of a jolly dinner, the calls of nature were attended to behind the big leather screen around one end of the sideboard in which the potty was kept. It had its own little compartment for the sake of hygiene.) However, Anita’s pot was of greater interest. It is a Chinese hard paste ‘blue and white’ porcelain censer and, according to my friend David Battie, it dates from the mid to late 17th century. Vessels for burning incense have been used in China since c.770 BC and in Western religious ceremonies since the 13th century. This is a particularly good and decorative example but not of great value, for although of considerable age in our scale it is not ancient in Chinese terms. Next came something I had not seen before which, considering it is for cooling a glass containing alcohol, is a real surprise. Its proper name is an Ehl-i Keyif. This one is Turkish and is used traditionally for drinking Raki, an anise-flavoured spirit taken as an aperitif. It is not very antique but it is made in the traditional manner of etched tinned copper, a centuries old technique. I learned all this from another good friend Okan Koseoglu who has just opened a most wonderful Turkish restaurant in Tring. Not only is the food superb, he makes a great martini cocktail ‘on the rocks’ or ‘straight up’, which he will now serve for me in my own Ehl-I Keyif. Well, as time is going so quickly like grandma said, we need to enjoy every minute. Serefe. www.sjpp.co.uk/richardbroughton www.familybusinessplace.com

making waves in the swimming pool world O ORIGIN CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS IN THE SWIM… rigin Leisure has been at the top of the swimming pool industry for thirty years. To celebrate this milestone the company has rebranded their entire look, with a bright new logo, an all-new website, and redesigned vans. But the ethic of the company remains unchanged. They are still adopting their programme of constant improvement, and their products are more adventurous, more imaginatively designed and more perfectly built than ever. Reflecting on the early days, when the company started out life as Leisureland, the directors searched the archives for

76

J U LY 2 0 1 1

photographic evidence of the pool houses they were building in the eighties. Simplicity seemed to be the keyword in those distant days - when a simple pine building housed a small heated swimming pool. In further research they found that the majority of these buildings are still in daily use today, giving new generations the pleasure of swimming at home throughout the year. Many of these early masterpieces have been refurbished by the Origin maintenance team, to bring the look and the pool technology up to date. To celebrate this burst of nostalgia, the directors also gathered a collection of early

advertisements and brochures, and featured them in the Origin summer newsletter NewsWave. Also featured is an article on Britain’s brightest swimming talent Francesca Halsall. Origin is delighted to be one of Fran’s sponsors, especially as she has just clocked a world-leading time in the 100 metres freestyle! Generally the buildings have become bigger, better, far more complex and far more stylish over the years - you can see the evidence of this in the photographs on these pages. Lovely pool houses that are designed to co-ordinate with their surroundings, to actually improve the vista from the owner’s home, and match in

with the materials and fabrics of the existing building. Constancy has been a key feature in Origin’s development. The client always meets a representative at director level, and has the opportunity to discuss his ideas and requirements with someone who has a total understanding of the swimming pool world. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company.

Within Origin’s range of expertise is a long standing commitment to the supply of hydrotherapy pools. Realising the benefits of swimming as a health giving pursuit as well as for pure fun, the company has made sure it has become recognised as the most important player in this exacting field. It was accepted as a natural progression to build outdoor pools too. The level of skill and the company’s unique understanding of pool technology stood them in good stead to become one of the country’s foremost outdoor pool providers. A pool house is a beautiful and stylish addition to your family life, but for pure

aesthetics an outdoor pool twinkling welcomingly in an English garden cannot be beaten! A question that is asked again and again is “Do you do the whole project yourself?” The answer is a resounding yes. From the very first sketch, maybe produced whilst standing in the client’s garden, to standing in that same garden admiring the pure

craftsmanship, no other company apart from Origin has been involved. From architectural design, through the rigours of planning consent, to the creation of the pool, the building, the heating, the glazing, it is a complete job, monitored and run by a team of committed experts. Origin is Britain’s longest established pool company. And the new look and logo

underlines that fact. The strapline reads ‘The original indoor & outdoor pool company.’ And that just about says it all. HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A DREAM GARAGE

r

RAGETEK STUDY

GA etired businessman CASE Lyndon Cole decided that he wanted to spend more time working on his cars but had one big problem: he hadn’t been able to get the cars in his triple garage for the 12 years he had lived in his house in Surrey. It was full of everything including the old kitchen sink. Having refurbished all the key areas in his home he didn’t know what options were available in his garage until he noticed an advertisement in a Lifestyle magazine for a company that carry out exactly what he was looking for: a makeover for his garage. From the very first meeting with the Managing Director of GarageTek he knew he had found the answer. Alastair Broom of GarageTek understood his problem as his company comes across this all the time. “For the Coles this was a big problem as they had accumulated all sorts of “stuff ” over the last 12 years but to us it is what we do every day and I just knew we had the answers for him” says Broom. GarageTek have state of the art software that shows customers exactly what the garage will look like when finished and also gives owners the chance of input into the design. Lyndon Cole was immediately impressed with the style and look and was equally impressed with the soft sell approach of GarageTek. “They gave me a very informed, courteous and helpful presentation and when we agreed to go ahead their fitters were equal to the sales team. They were a pleasure to have working on my garage” he added. And how does he feel about the end result? “Absolutely delighted! We didn’t realise how much space we actually had and not only have we got everything we want in the garage, we have so much space left. I never thought it would look so good when full – and I can even work on my E-type when time allows” says Lyndon Cole.

And the best part? He actually feels that whilst the walls and storage offer all he wants it was covering the ceiling that has made the most difference. It has lightened the whole garage and actually makes it a real pleasure to be in. “I would not hesitate to recommend the GarageTek system to anyone who wants a garage to compliment their home. It has made a massive difference here and I wish I had done it years ago” concluded a satisfied Cole. GarageTek design and install systems to suit individual needs. They realise that a garage offers a lot of space that is much neglected by home owners and have a large range of options to suit most needs. In addition it is a very flexible system so customers can always start small and add as and when they choose. They offer panels for the walls off which everything is hung; tile or resin options for floors and a bright cladding for the ceiling

ABOUT GARAGETEK Founded in New York in 2000, GarageTek came to the UK in late 2005 with a Head Office based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. Since then they have carried out makeovers throughout the country. The system is based on their own TekPanel which is a lightweight material that is fixed to the walls on which cabinets, shelving, activity racks and accessories can be hung. There are then options for floors and ceilings and the whole system offers a strong emphasis on flexibility to fit a budget. For further information and photographs or to arrange a site visit, please contact: Alastair Broom on Tel. 01491 579975, Mobile 07909 960505. info@garagetek.co.uk • www.garagetek.co.uk J U LY 2 0 1 1 7 9

COMING TO THE UK

create a stir has to be Todd White. His work has been described as ‘Rat Pack meets Picasso’ and has been rapturously received. Snapped up by celebrity A-listers Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas, Vin Diesel and Playboy legend Hugh Hefner, his work is instantly recognisable. Todd honed his skills at Warner Brothers as the lead illustrator for the hit cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants (you may not know him, but your children or grandchildren certainly will!). Born in Texas and now living in Los Angeles, Todd can often be found hanging out at bars and nightclubs, soaking up the atmosphere – watching, listening, observing, looking for a humorous social scene to capture. Through his use of bold colours and exaggerated features, his characters vividly

portray the glamour and style of Hollywood. As the official artist of the 2007 GRAMMY Awards – the musical equivalent of the Oscars –Todd has enjoyed a meteoric rise. Attempting to explain why is work is collected by 18 to 80 year-olds, Todd comments – Young people buy my work because they think : ’that’s me, that’s how I am’, and the old guys think : ‘that’s me, how I used to be’. Last year, Todd produced a number of images in conjunction with Coca-Cola, which featured on a range of exclusively limited edition bottles. More recently, Todd was commissioned by the ‘Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund’ to create a painting to mark what would have been her 50th birthday. The painting will be auctioned this month with proceeds going towards the charity. Todd White will be making a personal appearance at Gallery Rouge at the end of September. Due to his busy schedule and the massive clamour for his time, the exact date has yet to be finalised. We would recommend you keep the weekend of September the 24th free though!

cocoon seats, coffee tables and canopied loungers. “Over the years we’ve seen a move away from functional, utilitarian garden furniture as customers demand a lot more from their outside space,” says Nicola Gidlow, outdoor living buyer for John Lewis. “People want a recognisable style, rather than random pieces, and a space which is tailored to their lifestyle and matches their interior taste. “Also, what’s emerging strongly this season is a trend for creating

settings which conjure a holiday, exotic atmosphere that probably reflects a trend to ‘staycation’.” Rob Fairhurst, managing director at Outdoor Chic, says patios are fast becoming the new ‘play areas’ for adults. “There’s a strong trend for kitchen/family rooms opening out on to a terrace or garden so the area’s highly visible from the home, and that means people require the setting to have the ‘wow’ factor and be a focal point.

“Let’s face it, secretly most people want to turn the neighbours green with envy with a sophisticated ‘outdoor’ room which is as comfortable as a lounge and enhances their property.” If you’re wavering between wood and wire, or wrestling over rattan and wicker, make it simple by checking out perfect patio looks. HIT THE DECK It’s hardly surprising that as an island nation we never tire of coastal style, and it’s sailed in again this season. “Natural wood furniture, crisp blue and white fabrics for cushions and tablecloths and smart navy parasols have a timeless appeal and conjure an easy informality which is just right for relaxing,” says Gidlow. “No matter what the location, it’s easy to mimic that by-the-sea atmosphere with a few seaside accessories, from blue hurricane lamps, to stripey deckchairs and a barbecue bucket.” GET THE LOOK John Lewis’s Garda hardwood range, with its curved retro lines, is so handsome it wouldn’t be out of place indoors. Table, £499;bench, £350; and chair, £199. You’ll almost smell the sea breezes once you’ve added a Beach stripe deckchair, £34.99, and turquoise bucket BBQ, £14.99, both from Sainsbury’s. Garden Trading’s ideal for beachcombers trawling for accessories, and the range includes a wooden Beach sign, £10. Light the way with a sky blue lighthouse lantern, £12, from the Contemporary Home, and scattershell-shaped candles on a tabletop, from £6, from Heal’s.

Up furniture changes colour by remote control: table, £149; stool £129; chair £199. Tea-lights are so yesterday! Instead, get the glow with an egg-shaped Ambiflame colour-changing, cordless, chargeable light, £49.95 from GSP. Gnomes are on the move - straight into the smartest gardens because they’ve gone from kitsch to ubercool. Marks & Spencer’s cheery little chaps, £15 each, come in bright red or blue, while a Sainsbury’s Gnome, £8.99, is more traditional in style.

MIAMI OUTDOOR GARDEN 7 PIECE CORNER GROUP (WHITE), £1,599 FROM BHS

LUXURY LOUNGING Blur the boundary between the indoors and outdoors with a space that’s furnished with as much care and attention as a lounge. Ensure it’s stylish by keeping a sharp eye on design as well as comfort. “Al fresco dining is one of the great pleasures of summer,” says George Clarke, design consultant for B&Q. “An area of decking or paving with a pergola over the top will give a sense of enclosure and make it feel like an outdoor room. Zone areas by using structured plants in pots to give instant shape, character and interest.”

COUNTRY GARDEN COOL This is a quintessentially British look, redolent of soft green landscapes and the idyllic setting for lazy afternoon teas or sunset cocktails. “While classic squarer shapes will always remain popular, this season will see the re-emergence of the ‘timeless curve’,” says Heather McCann, creative director for specialist company Indian Ocean. “Gentle lines provide a more sympathetic look for an outdoor space, especially in more traditional settings. If you want a different, but still suitable, interpretation, opt for a chic combination of white and wood, which is a key trend this summer.” GET THE LOOK The gentle curved shape of the St Tropez range in grey synthetic wicker with bright blue cushions from John Lewis would fit the bill. Sofa and table, £999; chair, £399.

GET THE LOOK Dark, woven Cobbo furniture set, armchair, two-seater sofa, and table and cushions, £799, from B&Q, which also has an excellent range of dining sets. There’s a terrific choice at Bhs: A stunning whitecoloured woven Miami Corner Group, £1,599, and an ultra hip hang-out, the Cora hanging chair,£549. Also don’t miss its innovative San Marino Hut, £2,499, a luxurious enclosed lounger. Make a design statement with a curved Missoni Cordula Circular steel frame easy chair, with striking plump floral print cushions, £1,746 from Outdoor Chic; and banish dull skies in an instant with a Polynesia Pagoda parasol, decorated with tropical blooms, £145 from Heal’s. BISTRO FOLDAWAY GARDEN SET, £119 FROM GRAHAM & GREEN

And Indian Ocean’s Seville range has the winning pairing of white and wood: white carver chair, £139, and teak table, £399.

HOT TROPICS Turn up the heat in the garden with exotic florals, spicy hues and light-up furniture that makes a patio an irresistible entertaining space in the evening. “Colour and technology are the big story for patios,” says Rob Fairhurst. “Furniture which incorporates lighting is fun but also highly effective at glamorising even modest patios and adding an extra dimension to the outdoors at night.” GET THE LOOK If you’re not on a budget, the Extremis Corral & Bronco High set, light-up table with stools (various colours available), is £3,260 from Outdoor Chic. On the high street, both Bhs and Marks & Spencer offer impressive ranges. The latter’s Pentium Light

Alternatively, enjoy sipping a Pimms or have a tranquil teatime seated at a foldaway Bistro garden table with two chairs, £119, in subtle cream colour from Graham & Green. Make short work of stress by lounging in a traditional swing seat - a Monaco Tree Swing Seat in teak, £975, from Burford Garden Company is sturdy as well as good-looking. And even if meadows and rolling hills or a Chelseastyle garden isn’t your reality, fake it with outdoor art, this year’s best-selling accessory for gardens. Graham & Brown has a selection of weatherproof canvasses, £35 each, with scenes of a poppy field, daisy meadow or tulips. J U LY 2 0 1 1 8 5

PUSHING THE

BOUNDARIES!

W

e e thrive on the challenges constantly set for us by our clients’ who demand a high quality product but also want excellent value. It’s always highly rewarding to talk through imaginative new ideas that inspire and add interest to even the smallest piece of furniture, and then bring these ideas to life through design and manufacture. Occasionally we find ourselves immersed in a project incorporating huge challenges along with the opportunity to really indulge imaginative design and planning ideas and the chance to make a big statement! Having tackled some interesting projects recently I was prompted to recall how our small family run business had initially pushed it’s boundaries and set new agendas for our team who embraced all that came their way! A couple of years ago we embarked on a project which started life as a new kitchen for us here in the UK but slowly evolved into planning and designing 86

J U LY 2 0 1 1

furniture for several rooms in a large open plan home in Mallorca!! It was a first for us and we were delighted that the initial planning, design and fitting of the UK kitchen had been so successful for our client that we were then invited to carry out further work for them on a much larger scale. This project was a designers’ dream with glass walls wrapping around the back of the house to allow spectacular views of the pool, garden and sea. The design brief was simple – our client specified Walnut cabinetry with every conceivable gadget possible as this would eventually become their permanent home. In the UK however, we weren’t used to designing kitchens where we had to be mindful of things like heat, moisture from the sea air and air conditioning when it came to timber movement so the challenge was on! Slowly our kitchen emerged from the drawing board and on to the island of Mallorca via an international removals company! The sheer elegance of the Walnut cabinetry teamed with top of the range Miele appliances including a

vast double width stainless steel fridge freezer created a superb family area within the home. The kitchen finally sprung into life when the stunning Black Absoluto granite worktops were fitted into place, a wonderful finale to a project completed within budget and without compromise despite the logistical challenges that we had faced along the way. Our ecstatic clients wasted no time in pushing ahead with yet more superior designs again in Walnut, for their lounge, along with some stunning pieces for their open plan dining area and a beautiful yet practical design for

their study which is functional, durable and has a timeless feel. This project was a joy to work on as our clients’ certainly had great visualization making it very fulfilling as a designer to help them achieve all aspects of their proposed designs. They are now living happily in their home in Mallorca which has been transformed from a vast open space into a beautiful home and given us the confidence as a small family business to tackle quite sizeable projects which may not have been the case had we not been afforded this opportunity! cruise for the first time

c

ruise holidays continue to be in great demand. An estimated 2m people will take a cruise holiday from the UK this year. Ronnie Findlay, Managing Director of enjoyholidays, a regular on cruise holidays with his family, gives you the tips for those who are new to cruise. If you're new to cruising, looking for cruise tips or cruise advice then read on. A Cruises holiday is a unique way to escape from the rigours of everyday life and to explore many different destinations in one of the most relaxing ways imaginable. It offers you an extraordinary variety of activities and entertainment, plus an exceptional quality of dining. And of course, if you simply want to escape, there’s plenty of opportunity to do absolutely nothing at all. Booking a cruise can be like ordering a salad in the States, lot's of choices to make from dinning time to bed configuration to choice of table size. But by far the most important choice of all is getting the right ship and cruise for your requirements. When booking your first cruise the choices can be daunting and getting it wrong could lead to a disastrous holiday. Make sure you seek out a cruise profession for the best advice!

IS THE PORT AT THE MAIN DESTINATION?

Usually yes, but in some countries the ships dock in alternative locations. In these cases, the itinerary lists the port in brackets alongside the destination, e.g Rome (from Civitavecchia). Shore excursions are offered from your ship to your destination, with public transport and taxis available for those wishing to explore independently.

WHAT TYPE OF PEOPLE GO ON CRUISES?

HOW LONG DO I GET AT EACH PORT?

The great myth about cruise holidays is that it's just for the older generation. More and more families, couple singles and the like are setting sail on ships that offer a holiday for everyone. Cruising appeals to a wide range of people so there’s a good mix of age groups, families, couples and singles on board. Once again the best advice from the outset is imperative. There are adult only ships, family orientated ships, different classes of ships and size of ship can matter!

Again this can vary by Cruise line and ship. However, in the majority of destinations you will be able to enjoy a full day ashore. Your ship will usually arrive between 7am and 10 am, departing between 4pm and 6.30pm. A cruise line such as Hurtigruten, operates as a working ship taking Norwegians from port to port thus spend less time at each port. However as the ships are smaller you get the best possible access and cruise to see the wonderful Norwegian Fjords.

HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I TAKE?

WILL I BE SEA SICK?

On cruises sailing from and returning to Southampton you can take as many bags as you can fit into your cabin. On fly-cruises you’ll be restricted to the airline’s baggage allowance.

For those who haven't cruised before this seems to be the biggest single fear. The vast majority of those customers on their return state most of the time they couldn't even tell they were on a ship. Sea sickness is rare. The shear size of these many of these ships makes them stable in all weather conditions. However if you are worried, you can buy tablets that will help. Additionally, ships also contain well-equipped Medical Centres staffed by qualified doctors and nurses 24 hours a day.

WHAT DO I WEAR?

During the day casual wear is ideal with comfortable shoes for exploring ashore. Although cruising isn’t as formal as it once was, passengers still love to dress up in the evening. There are three types of evening wear;

88

Smart Casual, Semi-Formal and Formal, however it greatly depends on the cruise line you travel with it, the dress codes are usually relative to the type of meal arrangements on board, for example NCL Cruises are Freestyle and have no formal evenings and provide buffet meals.

Hop Smoked Rainbow TRouT wiTH peaS, bRoad beanS, new poTaToeS and Lemon dReSSing I HAVE TAKEN INSPIRATION FOR THIS MONTH’S RECIPE FROM A FANTASTIC DISH THAT WE HAVE ON OUR CURRENT MENU WHICH CONSISTS OF SOME BEAUTIFUL SEA TROUT WHICH IS LIGHTLY CURED IN A MIXTURE OF SEA SALT AND HOPS, THEN SMOKED IN FRESH HOPS, PAIRED WITH A CUCUMBER PANNACOTTA AND THE MOST WONDERFUL RYE BREAD, WHICH IS BAKED AT THE RESTAURANT. FOR THIS RECIPE, I HAVE SIMPLIFIED IT TO USE RAINBOW TROUT, WHICH IS IN ABUNDANCE IN FISHMONGERS, SUPERMARKETS OR BETTER STILL, IF YOU KNOW SOMEBODY THAT LIVES NEAR A TROUT FARM. THE HOPS USED IN THE RECIPE CAN BE OBTAINED FROM ANY SHOP THAT SELLS HOME BREWING PARAPHERNALIA OR INDEED ONLINE. ALTERNATIVELY SOME WOOD CHIPS OR SPECIALIST SAW DUSTS COULD ALSO BE USED.

Ingredients 2 good-sized rainbow trout cleaned, gutted and filleted 200g fresh peas 200g fresh broad beans (podded weight) 400g small new potatoes 4 tbsp. of fresh hops 1 tbsp. Maldon salt DRESSING

5 tbsp. good quality Olive Oil 1tbsp. fresh lemon juice Pinch of salt

Method 1. Take your trout fillets; mix half the hops with the Maldon salt in a food processor to produce a hop-salt. Blitz until thoroughly mixed together. Gently coat your trout fillets in the hop-salt and set aside for 20 minutes. 2. Lightly rinse off the salt mixture from the trout fillets and pat dry, then place in the home-made smoker –as instructed below- and smoke with the remainder of the hops or wood-chippings for approximately 8 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cook the podded peas and broad beans in some boiling salted water. 4. Cook your new potatoes. 5. Remove the trout fillets from the

smoker, in a hot frying pan with a little olive oil; gently cook your trout fillets for approximately 3-4 minutes on each side depending on the thickness of fillet.

To serve To bring the dish together, place your peas, broad beans and new potatoes on the plate. Lay over your hop smoked and pan fried trout fillet and dress with the olive oil and lemon juice mixture.

Chef ’s tip As an alternative to trout, a nice piece of fresh salmon would work equally as well. A simple home smoker can be made using a biscuit tin and a small cake cooling wire which sits inside the tin and a blow torch from a DIY shop. Simply puncture a couple of holes in the top of the lid to allow a little of the smoke to escape to avoid it being too intense. The hops can be laid at the bottom of the biscuit tin, the cooling wire placed over the top. The hops can then be ignited with the blow torch and the flame extinguished by being blown out, but still allowing the hops to smoulder. Quickly place the trout fillets on top of the cooling wire and pop on the lid to the biscuit tin.

he Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day. Pimm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta, and the Glyndebourne opera festival. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at British polo matches.

67AB=@G =4 >7;;A

Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirst-quencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup. Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887. After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other 96

spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities. The original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.
