LO CAL ART S

CHILTERN PAINTERS ART EXHIBITION 2014 he Chiltern Painters look forward to welcoming Life Magazine readers to their Autumn Art Exhibition which is again being held in the Market Hall, Old Amersham from Thursday 25th September until Sunday 28th September and entry to the show is free . The Chiltern Painters group, which began life in 1969 with four members, has grown in number to seventeen, plus several honorary members including the well-known singer and entertainer Val Doonican who is also a talented painter. Two of the group’s “founding four” - Ann Way and Ron Evens - are still exhibiting as honorary members more than forty years on. One of the principles on which the Chiltern Painters was founded was that members should be friends as well as artists and through the years this has remained true. Today’s members meet regularly in each other’s homes for talks, demonstrations and critiques by invited professional artists, and during the summer months, weather permitting, the group

T

paints together outside in various locations around the beautiful Chiltern countryside. There are also occasional joint outings to major exhibitions in London and elsewhere. Originally only consisting of amateur artists, the group now includes both professionals and amateurs, and the scope of the work displayed has widened greatly to include sculptors, print-making and wood-carving. The painters in the group work in watercolour, pastels, oils and acrylics in a variety of styles and formats. The Chiltern Painters chairman, Denis Pannett, is a past President of the prestigious Wapping Group of Artists, an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers and a Fellow of the Guild of Aviation Artists, being eight times winner of the prize for the best watercolour in their shows at London’s Mall Galleries. Among his numerous commissions are paintings for the official Christmas Cards for Sandringham House, St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and St Paul’s and Salisbury cathedrals. Other Chiltern Painters have

also regularly exhibited their work at major shows in London and elsewhere. Paintings by Paulene Tunnicliffe have been

hung by the R.O.I, the Pastel Society and the New English Art Club, and a pastel by her won the Annie Longley award. Ronald Wilkinson, a print-maker, engraver and designer of renown and formerly a part-time tutor at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, has exhibited at the Bankside Galleries in London, in Birmingham and at Brunel University. Distinguished architect Ronald Weeks has had drawings and paintings shown at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition and at shows in

Bristol and France. Ann Hogben is a prominent sculptor working in clay, bronze and bronze resin, whose work has been exhibited at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, at R.H.S. Wisley and at Country Living shows in London. A recent work for Ann was a commission for the Royal Marsden Hospital. The Macmillan Candlelight Ball

alf a million reasons to celebrate for Macmillan Cancer Support in South Buckinghamshire. Macmillan’s Gerrards Cross and District Committee, the only Macmillan committee in south Buckinghamshire, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and during that time has raised over half a million pounds. A special celebration, The Candlelight Ball, will be held at Stoke Place, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire on Saturday September 20th 2014. Tickets for this unique evening cost £50.00, which includes fizz on arrival, a three-course meal with wine, coffee and petit fours. There will be live entertainment and a disco. Along with a gift tree and live auction it promises to be an evening to remember which will raise much needed funds and all profits will go to Macmillan. It’s more important than ever that we continue to support

H

16

SEPTEMBER2014

Macmillan in our local community. Every day in Buckinghamshire ten people hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Macmillan has invested heavily in the local area with 90 healthcare professionals, either in the community or hospitals and is committed to further investment to support people living with cancer. Macmillan provides Information Centres, e.g. in Wexham Park Hospital, and Health Care specialists; such as nurses, doctors and dieticians. Macmillan also funds financial advisors throughout the county, and of course the Support Line can be accessed by all. Cancer is one of the toughest fights most of us will ever have to face. All the money raised from The Candlelight Ball will go directly to people affected by cancer. Just £27 could fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour; £100 could pay for a Macmillan Grant to help someone with their transport costs for daily radiotherapy.

Stoke Place is a prestigious, privately owned Queen Anne style manor house built as a family home in the 17th century, set in 26 acres of grounds landscaped by Capability Brown with a six acre lake and has been specially chosen for the occasion. The Candlelight Ball is sponsored by Yaldens, Hansford Sensors Ltd, Daiichi-Sankyo Pharmaceuticals, Nunn Hayward LLP, B.P.Collins LLP and Fairweather Insurance Ltd. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and tables are selling fast. For more information, or to buy tickets to help raise the next half a million pounds: Call Tracy on 01753 892 303 or email: macmillancandlelightball@hotm ail.com Many thanks, on behalf of Gerrards Cross and District Macmillan

he River & Rowing Museum has an exciting new exhibition, The Source, displaying work from six contemporary local artists, each offering individual and abstract interpretations of the River Thames. The exhibition celebrates the natural beauty of the river as it flows through picturesque rural towns and eventually shapes the Capital. The Source runs from 20 September 2014 until 18 January 2015 and showcases work by the Parkbench Group, a new artist collective from Oxfordshire. These six well-known local artists are all based in the Cotswolds, where the River Thames begins its journey as an insignificant trickle before coursing and curving through the Capital. The work embraces the vibrancy of the river and reveals unique, abstract and vivid interpretations of Britain’s longest running waterway. The Source focuses on the river’s beginnings, the landscapes and settlements around it. Drawing from their personal memories, the artists present work demonstrating their individual experiences of the river and of living in the Thames Valley.

Terry Cripps’s prints are inspired by his recent experiences travelling. For this exhibition he has focused on human interaction with landscape and commerce along the early reaches of the Thames. MARIANNE HELLWIG JOHN

Marianne Hellwig John’s work makes up collections in exhibitions across the world. Her paintings have become progressively more abstract over the years, though always drawing from landscape elements, taking advantage of the unexpected. Marianne was artist in residence at the Atelierhaus, Sankt Radegund

Penny Prince’s work in this exhibition shows a deep interest in vestiges and layers of The Thames, capturing a moment in time. Her abstract paintings allow for interpretation, they do not offer their meaning immediately or easily. The work demands that viewers take time, consider, and allow their imagination to run. SUE RAE

Sue Rae explores the experience of simple river travel. Rae’s work mirrors both tangible and intangible memories of places. Her prints explore subtlety and contrast of mark, translucency and density of colour. MAGGIE SHAW

Maggie Shaw’s works depicts a profound fascination in energy and tension in nature from trees, rivers and stone. She paints her canvases without tools, using only controlled hand-pressure to directly transfer her physical energy onto the canvas. The exhibition runs from 20 September to 18 January 2015 at River & Rowing Museum, Mill Meadows, Henley on Thames, RG9 1BF Visit rrm.co.uk for more information

Henley memories

o mark the centenary of the First World War, the River & Rowing Museum’s new exhibition, Home Front Henley, reflects on Henley throughout 1914 -1918. Open until January 2015, the museum will explore how the lives of Henley’s local residents changed dramatically during the Great War. Home Front Henley includes fascinating objects, photos and stories from the people of Henley, painting a picture of what life would have been like, for both Henley residents and other communities across the Thames Valley. Part of the exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to understand how Henley contributed to the war effort, telling fascinating stories of rowers who enlisted as soldiers. Home Front Henley offers a real taste of wartime life, drawing on the poignant stories of local families, soldiers and businesses. A major focus of the exhibition is the lives of women during the War, demonstrating how their roles within society altered, both in Henley and across Britain. As the realities of war became more apparent, previous issues of suffrage and equality faded into the background. Stories highlight the commitment of Henley’s women to their new roles. One account tells the tale of Florence Ellen Smith (known as Ellen) an 18 year old farmer’s daughter from Henley. She began as a cadet at St. John’s Ward Park, but transferred to the main

Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1918. Following the end of the war she remained in the WAAC, and was granted 12 days of leave the following Christmas. However, her leave was cut short when she was called back to her duties. Sadly she had to sacrifice nursing her mother, Jane Smith, who died in February 1919. She was granted a compassionate discharge from the services and returned to her father in Henley. The new exhibition also demonstrates the wartime camaraderie of local institutions. Henley’s Town Hall Red Cross Hospital opened on 14 August 1914, for instance, and relied on local volunteers and donations from local residents like Ronald Brakspear who gave £50 (over £2,000 in modern day currency) to the government for necessary improvements. On the 23 August 1917 Queen Alexandra and Princess Victoria visited the hospital to raise soldiers’ morale and thank them for their sacrifices. The River & Rowing Museum is inviting local Henley residents to share their family war stories. Students from Gillotts Secondary School are researching local Henley heroes and their roles in WWI and these findings will be on display and will fill another element of the exhibition. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS CHRIS LEE’S LTD TO STAR AT KOP HILL CLIMB – SEPT 20/21

Beaconsfield-Based car specialist chris lee’s ltd is a Gold sponsor of this year’s Kop hill climB (princes risBorouGh, septemBer 20/21) and is taKinG a larGe stand at the event to promote the various facets of its unique and thrivinG Business. ROLLS-ROYCE & BENTLEY MAINTENANCE

The company is best known for its expert service and repair of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys of all ages, and Stand S7-9 will feature no less than six very different examples of these prestige motorcars. Undoubtedly the most imposing will be the mighty 1972 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI – a model beloved by royalty and heads of state the world over, and available for hire from Chris Lee’s for weddings and other major events and celebrations. There is also a pristine 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Continental that is not only maintained by the company but was treated to a comprehensive body restoration by it too. The 1953 Bentley R-Type and 1951 Bentley MKVI Two-Seater Special are also looked after by the firm and regularly used by their owners for touring at home and abroad. Last but not least is an enchanting little Rolls-Royce-grilled advertising van that is not quite what it seems, and actually owes more to the Japanese robots of Daihatsu than Rolls-Royce trained craftsmen – the kids will love it! FIRST CLASS BODY REPAIRS & PAINTWORK.

Complementary to Chris Lee’s established mechanical offering is its body and paint shop, 22

that’s widely recognised as one of the finest in the South of England. It routinely tackles everything from minor dents and scratches to nut and bolt rebuilds and, in order to demonstrate the breadth of the company’s capabilities, the stand’s show-stopper is a decidedly tired-looking ‘barn find’ 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III that Chris Lee’s will soon be treating to a ground-up restoration of equivalent quality to that of the Continental. Infinitely smarter for now is a brand new Lancaster-liveried Jaguar, that’s being displayed in recognition of the paint and customising work Chris Lee’s regularly carries out on behalf of this renowned dealer chain.

Though complementary, our skills are not always easy to portray, so we’ve taken a sizeable stand at this year’s gathering in order to show at least a little of all the services we offer, and we look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during what will doubtless be a memorable (and hopefully dry!) weekend.”

LOTUS FACTORY APPROVAL

Such is the quality of the bodyshop’s work that it is one of few to carry full Lotus factory approval, and another major point of interest on the Kop Hill stand is a new Lotus courtesy of regular dealer customer Lotus Silverstone. This will sit alongside a crash-damaged chassis that the company removed when repairing a similar car - the repair of fibreglass-bodied cars is yet another Chris Lee’s speciality. Said Director Martin Hawes: “Kop Hill Climb has become an event to be reckoned with and is a great day out for all the family.

COMPETITION PRIZES

Throughout the weekend Chris Lee’s Ltd will be running a competition for stand visitors to win a ride up the hill in one of the display cars – there will be four trips up for grabs, two on the Saturday and two on Sunday, so make sure you seek out Stand S7-9 and see if you can bag one of them for you and/or your family! Glittering fashion show launches

Breast Cancer Awareness Month reast Cancer Care’s annual fashion show, in which all the models have had a diagnosis of breast cancer, will launch Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The star studded event is taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London and will raise vital funds to ensure Breast Cancer Care can offer support to the thousands of women waking up to the harsh reality of breast cancer every day.

B

Whether you’ve had a devastating breast cancer diagnosis yourself, have a loved one facing this brutal disease, or simply want to treat yourself and fundraise at the same time, the fashion show is the perfect occasion for you. It’s a fantastic day of fashion, fine food and first-class entertainment – so don’t forget to pack your dancing shoes! Previous performers and guests at this glamorous event include Geri Halliwell, Denise Lewis, Victoria Pendleton and Andrea McLean. The 24 models, including two men, will be styled by fashion correspondent, Hilary Alexander, alongside London Fashion Week coordinator, Lesley Goring. LOUIS VUITTON OPENS POP-UP STORE AT DOVER STREET MARKET, MAYFAIR W1 UNTIL 15TH OCTOBER 2014 he luxury brand’s first ephemeral store has opened its doors at the iconic London concept store, Dover Street Market. Located on the first floor of the Georgian building, the Louis Vuitton store is dedicating itself to an edit of directional pieces from the coveted debut Autumn/Winter 2014 WRTW Collection by Nicolas Ghesquiere, who was appointed women’s artistic director of the Maison in November 2013. The store will also feature a selection of key runway accessories include leather goods, fashion jewellery, sunglasses and shoes. Dedicated Louis Vuitton spaces for the same collection will also be created at the Dover Street Markets in New York and Tokyo.

T

Louis Vuitton takes over the Dover Street Market London corner window with an exclusive creative concept designed especially for the store from 1st - 15th September, covering the Spring/Summer 2015 WRTW London Fashion Week period. ABOUT THE LOUIS VUITTON AUTUMN/WINTER 2014 WRTW COLLECTION This familiar wardrobe appeals to the collective unconscious, stirring our affective memory. We never tire of these perennial pieces; they are faithful friends. Eternally under their alluring spell, we delight in wearing them again and again. A peppering of original designs shakes up the cosy coterie; these distinctly modern, strikingly stylish newcomers open up the much-loved wardrobe to new pairings and a landscape of possibilities. Louis Vuitton is a land of contrasts. A time-honoured and noble legacy is kept alive by a yearning for discovery and exploration. Coursing boldly and imaginatively through the decades, Louis Vuitton refreshes the world of fashion with an untiring ebb and flow of retrospective and fresh perspective. Glorious smooth, full-grain leather is contrasted with hybrid materials. Bold, bright colours are juxtaposed with muted halftones. Hand-crafted artisanal techniques are updated with 36

a high-tech twist. This initial collection tells a tale of expertise made possible by innovative techniques. It focuses on the highlights and remains open to interpretation. Living proof that today’s “timeless” was at one time seen as innovative. In this collection, the timeless is now. ABOUT LOUIS VUITTON Since 1854, Louis Vuitton has brought unique designs to the world, combining innovation with style, always aiming for the finest quality. Today, the Maison remains faithful to the spirit of its founder, Louis Vuitton, who invented a genuine “Art of travel” through luggage, bags and accessories which were as creative as they were elegant and practical. Since then, audacity has shaped the story of Louis Vuitton. Faithful to its heritage, Louis Vuitton has opened its doors to architects, artists and designers across the years, all the while developing disciplines such as ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, watches, jewellery and stationery. These carefully created products are testament to Louis Vuitton’s commitment to fine craftsmenship. ABOVE DOVER STREET LONDON Opened in September 2004, Dover Street Market is a 1200 square metre store in the middle of London., conceived by Rev Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. The store covers six floors in a converted Georgian building in Mayfair and houses all the Comme des Garcons brands. Alongside these sit other specially selected designers and artists. There are no set criteria for Dover Street Market; the diverse arrays of collections include established labels and emerging talents, through to traditional products that transcend fashion. This month Dover Street Market celebrates its 10th Anniversary. For more information, visit www.louisvuitton.co.uk and www.doverstreetmarket.com

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is one of the most prestigious, and glamourous annual fashion shows in the world, and is to take place in London for the first time this December. ozens of international supermodels will strut their stuff at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show at Earls Court in December, the US brand have announced. The event, which will be broadcast to 192 countries, has only ever once before ventured outside America when it transferred to Cannes during the film festival in 2000.

D

Speaking at the company’s European flagship store on New Bond Street, Victoria’s Secret president and chief marketing officer Ed Razek said it had wanted to hold the show in London since 1998. But Mr Razek, accompanied by two of the US brand’s “angels” Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel, said this year was now the right time because the brand now has a “critical mass” in the UK with six stores and plans to open more. Although he said the models were not booked yet, he revealed that he has already asked British model of the moment Cara Delevingne to “save the date”. He added: “Cara actually was on the runway the last two years. I’ll let you in on a secret, I saw Cara and told her it was coming to London and told her to save the date, she was excited.” The show is a lavish event featuring elaborate costumed lingerie, a variety of musical acts by leading entertainers, and intricate set designs within the show. Each year, the show attracts hundreds of celebrities and entertainers, 38

and features twenty to forty of the world’s top fashion models as part of the fashion show. Past Angels have included Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, Candice Swanepoel and Miranda Kerr. Previous year’s musical acts have included Kanye West, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Akon, Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Seal, Justin Timberlake, The Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Sting, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. Guests at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show are seated among a star-studded audience which has previously included celebrities such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Orlando Bloom, Elton John, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Longoria, Denzel Washington, P. Diddy, Lenny Kravitz and Serena Williams. The “fashion, fantasy and entertainment” spectacle will be directed by Britain’s Hamish Hamilton, who oversaw the televising of the opening and closing ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be one of the last events hosted by Earls Court, which is due to be demolished next year. www.victoriassecret.co.uk www.cornucopia-events.co.uk/victorias-secret-fashion-show

We also seek to keep exams in propor oportion tion because we believe strongly that exams are not the point of education or the point of schools. In a recent assembly I illustrated this by encouraging the girls to think of education as being like a very broad highway. We might move fast along the highway or we might move at a slightly more sedate pace but we are all moving in one direction and we are moving with purpose and speed.

No one is going backwards! The direction we are all travelling in is that of intellectual growth, independent thinking, and development of the whole person whilst pursuing our passions and allowing our curiosity a free rein. Exams are not part of this great highway. Exams are a process, and a very necessary one, but they are not the purpose of education or of schools. Exams are like a narrow track running alongside the highway which, once a year, students have to join for a few weeks and along which there are obstacles and potholes and hurdles. We teach them how to negotiate these and we do practice runs before they get to the ones which will have an importance throughout their life. We teach the skills needed to overcome the obstacles, we advise students how to negotiate potholes successfully. We want our students to do well as they travel along these tracks because the results will determine their future choices in life. Exams also equip them with skills which will be enormously helpful to them in later life: how to work HİFLHQWO\ XQGHU WLPHG FRQGLWLRQV

f there’s one thing that will stop you puckering up with your other half, it’s a nasty cold sore on your lip. They may be small and often barely noticeable to others - but to the sufferer they can seem huge, and very obvious. The reality is, however, that if sufferers were brave enough to go on their dates, their partners would probably sympathise, as the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) estimate that by the age of 25, 60% of people will have become infected with the herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 virus that most commonly causes cold sores. HOW DO YOU CATCH THEM?

The virus is very much a kissing disease, passed on by mouth-to-mouth from someone who has a cold sore on their face. “It’s skin contact with friction, so you’re more likely to catch a cold sore off somebody if it’s a long kiss, rather than just a peck on the lips,” says Nigel Scott of the HVA. However, as the virus is fragile and dies very quickly when it’s off the skin, it’s only caught by direct skin contact. So there’s no need to worry about sharing cups or towels with sufferers. It can also be killed by water, or getting too hot or cold. Not all people infected with HSV will develop cold sores as a result, say experts. In fact, only around a quarter of carriers will ever experience symptoms. “You can catch it and never get symptoms,” says Scott. “Or there could be a trigger at any stage of your life and you get a cold sore.” WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?

Once you’ve caught HSV, it hides in nerve sheaths and can be reactivated by various situations, including tiredness, illness, stress, being run-down, menstruation, too much alcohol or the ultraviolet rays from sunbeds or sunlight. Some people can have recurrent outbreaks as often as once a month. Scott says: “If your mouth and lips get very sore if you do something like eat a very scratchy French loaf, if you get very run-down, or something upsets 56

KISS THOSE COLD SORES

GOODBYE AFTER 80% OF COLD SORE SUFFERERS ADMITTED THEY’VE CANCELLED DATES DUE TO OUTBREAKS, EXPERTS EXPLAIN WHY THE NASTY MOUTH SORES OCCUR AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. BY LISA SALMON your immune system - any of these things can act as triggers. “The immune system would normally keep this virus suppressed, but if it’s really stretched with something else, sometimes it doesn’t quite manage.” HOW DOES IT FEEL?

There will be an itchy, tingly feeling on or near the lip when a cold sore is developing, and perhaps a feeling of pressure. This is the time to treat the area, as at this stage it’s possible to stop the cold sore developing, says Scott.

If left untreated, the itchy feeling develops into a small red patch, then a blister, which bursts and heals into the classic cold sore scab, normally lasting around a week. Sores tend to appear where you’ve been kissed, although they can occasionally recur anywhere on the face. In general, the virus prefers the moist skin that lines the lips, mouth and nose. TREATMENT

The HVA says the best way to avoid cold sores is to look after

yourself, and those who are prone to them should steer clear of any potential triggers. GP Dr Phil Hammond, a patron of the HVA, warns that exposure to bright sunlight, which can trigger a cold sore outbreak, is a particular risk for skiers at this time of year, and advises them to use a good sun block. “A few unlucky people seem to get frequent repeat outbreaks sometimes triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or exposure to bright sunlight,” he says. “A long-term course of antiviral tablets can deal with this.” Aciclovir, a medication used to treat a variety of viral infections including cold sores, shingles and chickenpox, is commonly prescribed to sufferers, and some aciclovir creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. Other cold sore treatments include using a herbal cream made with lemon balm, or a liquorice balm, which can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks. Medical nutritionist and former GP Dr Sarah Brewer says liquorice extracts stimulate immunity by increasing production of the antiviral substance ‘interferon’. “When applied to the lips, it suppresses the production of viral proteins needed to keep the herpes virus in its latent state, so they’re less likely to cause an eruption,” she says. “When applied to a sore, it promotes more rapid destruction of infected cells.” FIGHT THOSE COLD SORES

The Herpes Viruses Association has these suggestions for sufferers... • Start treatment as soon the characteristic tingling starts. • Apply well-wrapped ice for 90 minutes to cool the area. • Use over-the-counter creams. • Apply cold, used teabags to the sore every hour. • Use tea tree oil or geranium oil to help speed healing. • Keep the sore moist so it doesn’t crack with a dab of Vaseline. • See your doctor for antiviral tablets if you have recurrent outbreaks.

VARICOSE VEINS Michael Gaunt is a specialist consultant with over 25 years’ experience tackling varicose veins. He has warned against the dangers of ignoring the problems – or viewing them as primarily a cosmetic concern. With clinics specialising in treating varicose and thread veins in Harley Street, London, Cambridge, Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds, Mr. Gaunt has treated more than 4,000 patients and he outlines the dangers of dismissing potential problems which could ultimately lead to a host of complications including veins bursting, clotting or even deep vein thrombosis. He said: “Varicose veins are often considered a cosmetic condition but if neglected, they can result in complications. “Fortunately, most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good long-term results. “Minimally invasive local anaesthetic procedures can be used to treat varicose veins on a walk-in, walk-out basis. “This leaves the patient with minimal pain following the procedure, with practically an immediate return to normal activity.” Specialising in both the Endovenous Laser and Clarivein techniques, Mr Gaunt has built up a reputation as one of the country’s eminent venous experts. The treatments he offers include foam sclerotherapy,

Endovenous Laser, VNUS and Clarivein – the proven technique from the USA where a chemical is sprayed into the vein, sealing it and preventing the varicose vein from reappearing. In his three decades working on varicose veins, Mr Gaunt is only too aware that one of the biggest problems is one of ignorance. He explained: “At least 20% of the adult population suffer with some form of varicose veins. While in the developing stages problems may be cosmetic, they can lead to far bigger concerns if left untreated. “The condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications may occur, ranging from leg swelling, ulcers and pigmentation of the skin around the ankles. “There are occasions when veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to painful inflammation known as phlebitis.” “Varicose veins can affect men just as much as they can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored; with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become very large and complications start to occur. “It is important to target varicose veins before they become a significant problem, as without medical treatment varicose veins always deteriorate, sometimes suddenly, and complications may have a major impact on daily activities.” For those wanting to discover more, or who may be worried about potential problems, Mr Gaunt offers mini-consultations to perform an initial assessment and discuss potential treatments. More information on treatment options at his clinics in London, Cambridge, Norwich and Bury St. Edmunds can be found by calling 01223 305858 or visiting www.michaelgaunt.com.

Q&A

WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST

DR ShaMeeK POPat

It’s lovely to have some September Sun, hopefully it continues for a while! This month, I thought I would try and concentrate on Adult Orthodontics (braces) as many of you have requested information about it. People’s traditional thoughts on orthodontics, conjure up images of teenagers with metal ‘train tracks’, aka ‘Ugly Betty’ style in your mouth for years. Fortunately, the world of ‘braces’ has come a long way. The latest techniques and materials have developed beyond recognition and there are so many new and exciting options available. The principals are the same, but the innovations in ‘braces’ have opened it up to almost anybody who wants to have a perfect smile. Q. WHAT IS ORTHODONTICS? A. Orthodontics is a specialised branch of Dentistry concerned with the growth of teeth, jaws and face. Nearly one million people in the UK started having orthodontic treatment last year and more adults than ever before want treatment. WHY? Orthodontic treatment is about making the best of your teeth and it is about improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Once you can bite together correctly, you can eat more comfortably and care for your teeth more easily. It is about creating a natural, healthy smile and boosting your self-confidence. A study conducted by YouGov’ on behalf of British Orthodontic Society (BOS) found 45% of adults are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth and 20% would consider orthodontic treatment in adult life (source: www.nowsmile.org). Q. SO WHAT CAN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT DO? A. Quite simply it can improve the appearance of your teeth for problems such as over-crowding, spacing and prominent front teeth. It can also help prior to bridge/veneer placements. In addition it can overcome problems with your bite, such as cross bite or a deep bite. A bad bite can lead to excessive tooth wear, abnormal strain on the jaw muscles and joints, and inefficient chewing. Orthodontic treatment can help

achieve a balanced even bite, thereby reducing the strain on muscles and joints of the jaws and reducing the risk of abnormal tooth wear. Q. AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES? A. No. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Providing your teeth and gums are healthy you can have braces from 7 to 70 years age and beyond. Q. HOW DOES ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WORK? A. It involves wearing a brace. These are custom-made and designed according to the problem being treated. They work by applying gentle forces, in a carefully controlled direction to precisely move the teeth through the supporting bone to a new more desirable position. Q. WHAT KIND OF BRACES ARE AVAILABLE? A. This is where the choices have increased for patients. For fixed braces, modern orthodontic brackets are generally less noticeable than those of the past. Aesthetic brackets (and wire), made from tooth coloured material like ceramic or plastic are fitted on the outer aspect of the teeth but much more discreet at a distance than conventional metal braces. Adults like to choose ceramic braces because they "blend in" with the teeth and are less noticeable than metal ones. This was the type of brace actor Tom Cruise wore to

improve his smile. There are also braces available that can be fixed on the inner aspect of the teeth (lingual appliances). Latest lingual braces are the state-of-the-art design that offers an amazing technological advancement in orthodontic treatment. Since they are difficult for the casual observer to detect, these braces are often referred to as ‘invisible braces’. They are worn by people of all ages in all walks of life without anyone else realising. An alternative is removable braces like Invisalign. These are clear and nearly invisible aligners. Moving teeth with removable aligners is not new. However, the computer program, which can generate a series of aligners with small changes, is the new part. Invisalign is recommended for orthodontic situations with mild to moderate spacing or crowding. They are virtually undetectable, easy to use and comfortable to wear. Q. HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE? A. It usually takes 12-24 months but will vary according to how complex the case is. Your orthodontist will provide you with an indication of this at the start. Q. CAN MY DENTIST FIT BRACES? A. Majority of orthodontic treatment is carried out by those with a formal postgraduate orthodontic training. You can discuss with your dentist if he provides orthodontic treatment or request for a referral to an orthodontist. Q. WILL I NEED TO WEAR ANYTHING ELSE AFTER? A. Teeth will have a tendency to slip back unless retained. Your orthodontist will thus provide you with a removable retainer to wear at night and/or a fixed retainer which is essentially a thin wire placed on the inner aspect of your teeth. You get use to this soon and no one else would see it as you keep enjoying your new smile!

Migraines MIGRAINE HEADACHES CAN BE A RECURRING AND PERSISTENT CONDITION FOR MANY PEOPLE. 1ST-7TH SEPTEMBER WAS MIGRAINE AWARENESS WEEK. DR BRIAN MCGIRR FROM DOCTORNOW EXPLAINS THE CAUSES AND TREATMENT FOR MIGRAINES. igraine is a term used to describe a particular type of headache. Migrainous headaches tend to be much more severe and dramatic than a standard headache and are commonly associated with neurological symptoms such as visual problems, numbness or weakness. They can also be associated with severe nausea and can be very disabling. There are many dierent types of migraine and some can occur without the actual headache, only the associated symptoms. Historically a migraine has been controlled by taking medication at the time when the migraine occurs. Usually this consists of a combination of an anti-nauseant as well as a painkiller. More recently a new family of medications called Triptans have become available which are really eective at aborting migraine, provided the medication is taken at the start of an attack. Sadly these medications do not work for everyone and for severe migraine which occurs regularly a preventative approach is more sensible and there are a myriad of medications

M

62

SEPTEMBER2014

available for this. In severe cases, which fortunately are rare, the vascular spasm can lead to strokes. There are some co-exisiting illness or conditions where migraine can make life complicated. The most common that we come across is the use of the combined oral contraceptive pill. In people who have migraines, particularly those that are related to their menstrual cycle, the use of the contraceptive pill is contraindicated. The underlying mechanism for migraine is not well understood and still debated. However, it is accepted that the fundamental issue revolves around blood vessels and spasm or dilation thereof. The most important thing about migraine is that there are many therapeutic options depending on the severity and pattern, I would always encourage you to have a good discussion with your GP to see what would suit you. Hello Autumn!

It’s official. AW14 is among us. And with a new season, comes a host of fresh hair, beauty and nail trends to play with. We grilled hair and beauty fashion experts from celebrity stylist Brendan O’Sullivan’s Amersham salon to find out what’s hot for Autumn.

keeping hair shinier and beautiful are Gloss Appeal shine spray and Touche Finale, a polishing serum, both from the brilliant Kérastase Couture Range. Together, these two products will ensure your hair looks and feels the best it’s ever been.

MOCHA MAGIC

BEAUTY IN YOUR GRASP

What better place to kick off a new season than with the sublime L'Oréal Professionnel’s INOA Mocha Collection – a rich twist on a classic brunette. Whether you’ve spent summer as a beach blonde and now want to mix it up as a multi-tonal brown, or you’re a natural brunette looking to add dimension, now is the perfect time to experiment as high street stores change their windows to make way for neutral tones and oodles of grey (a major colour trend for winter – you heard it here first).

A great way to create a bold new you for Autumn is by making a statement with your nails. Tones to be seen on fingers and toes this season are deep, dark jewels, berry tones and warm neutrals. We’ve fallen in love with OPI’s Gel Colour Nordic Collection as it’s perfect for creating nail art; think deep chocolate with a shimmering stripe of metallic taupe. Ask our nail experts at The Beauty Retreat which colours they recommend!

TREAT YOURSELF TO A DASH OF COLOUR

From September 15 to October 4, The Beauty Retreat will be lending a hand to promoting skin health awareness, in partnership with Dermalogica. Face Map Our Nation focuses on one of Dermalogica’s signature therapies, face mapping. It’s a zone-by-zone approach to skin analysis. Drop by the salon and talk to our experienced (and certified) skin therapist. You’ll be offered practical solutions for any skin problem and an at-home product prescription to help improve the look and feel of your skin immediately. Even if you just have a simple question you want to ask, feel free to come into the salon and say hello - we’re happy to help and there’s no pressure to buy. For more information, look for the hash tag #facemapnation on Twitter or visit facemapnation.com/UK or call in and see in house therapist Bonnie.

Of course, if you’re playing with colour, you need to focus on keeping it looking its best. That means treating your hair on a regular basis. From in-salon treatments to a conditioning mask, it’s important to maintain your colour, whatever your look. Two of our favourite products for

For more information on any of the beauty and hair treatments, or to make an appointment for your new AW14 hair colour, call Brendan O’Sullivan’s Hair and Beauty Salon today on 01494 434016 or visit www.brendanssalon.co.uk

EXPLORING YOUR DARK SIDE

If you decide to go darker, you’ll need to change that beauty routine too. Sheer berry lips look stunning against any skin tone. Going darker, your hair will instantly look healthier and glossier. If brunette isn’t your thing, there’s loads more options. Autumn is a great time for blondes to slide into cooler tones – les ash, more clean creamy blonde. Redheads have also had a revamp and coppery tones are back, so don’t be afraid to experiment with lowlights for added drama and texture. If you’re more of a raven black type, then opt for subtle tones of violet for added interest.

ack in 2007, Buckinghamshire based Hazlemere Window Company became the first company in the UK to manufacture and supply a dual frame aluminium window system that achieved an ‘A’ Window Energy Rating. So far so good. But what does it really mean for the environment and perhaps more importantly y, homeowners in England?

Nowadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy y,, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With the environment and green issues becoming more important daily because of the devastating effect on our environment of climate change, most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more 66

energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last decade to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Wiindow Energy Rating. Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories have always promoted the energy efficiency of their new generation aluminium windows and doors and they

etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from un-insulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere s Eco-friendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A+ rating, having a combined U-Value U-Value of 1.0 W/M2K.

wasted no time in testing their systems to ascertain what level on the familiar A-C scale they could achieve. Quite simply simply,, the higher the rating, the more thermally efficient the window system is. Using the latest, stateof-the-art materials Hazlemere successfully proved they could provide homeowners with an aluminium or UPVC UPVC window system that provided the highest possible A rating. Independently tested, Hazlemere s range of Eco-friendly windows offers homeowners a real choice of energy efficient, environmentally-friendly products.

However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they money. Hazlemere s buy as well as saving money. aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as

the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again. Wherever we look we are being encouraged to recycle; plus asked to consider what happens to the products that we own once they have reached the end of their life, as well as making environmentally friendly choices in terms of energy use. The same scrutiny can now be applied to the windows we buy, buy, and with Hazlemere s Eco-friendly windows, homeowners can rest assured they are indeed doing their bit , given Hazlemere Window Company is accredited to BS EN ISO14001 for waste management, as they also recycle old PVC windows, wood, metal and glass. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd is a family owned business that has been trading locally over three decades, providing all of its window, door and conservatory customers with a fully comprehensive robust ten year guarantee, backed up by its own inhouse team of service engineers, who are dedicated to maintaining the quality of both products and installation. The company owns the freehold of their 56,000 square feet Head Office, Factory and Showroom in High Wycombe, which is where their own experienced team of designers, consultants, surveyors, fabricators, installers and service engineers are based. To control this, a system of authorised testing and marking was introduced, starting in the year 1300; a small stamp in the form of a Leopard’s Head. First known as the King’s Mark it became the London town mark as here was the headquarters of the Guild of Goldsmiths, the body responsible for the testing. To further guard against malpractice a mark which would identify the silversmith was introduced in 1363. The post of Assay Master, responsible for testing was an annual office, and in order that he too could be traced a third mark, a letter of the alphabet which changed each year year, was established in 1478. In 1544 the Goldsmiths’ Company o doubt that their wares were of introduced a mark to show beyond the required standard. This was the figure of a walking Lion which became foreve er recognised as the Sterling Standard mark. Since then the purchaser of British hallmarked k d silv ilv ver er has h had the assurance of the finest guarantee system in the world. Through it you can tell where a piece was made, when it was made, who made it, who tested it and what it is made of. But why sterling? In the 1180’s King John recognised that some regulation was necessary. He summoned from Germany a group of goldsmiths, reputedly the best in the business, to reduce silv ver er to ‘a fineness’ to retain its v value alue but be hard enough for use as coinage as well as silverware. They were not made overly welcome by the natives who called them Easterlings from whence they came. Soon the ‘a’ was dropped to Esterling and finally Sterling. old dairy simplicity Beautiful Bespoke caBinetry and a no frills palette creates the perfect Backdrop for this Busy artistic family and their four legged friends!

rtist Lucy Stopford lives in Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire with her husband, teenage children, her beautiful black lab and little Yorkshire terrier. Lucy is secretary to the Oxford Art Society and runs weekly workshops at The Phoenix Art Centre in Towersey nr. Thame. She uses oils paints and thick brushes strokes to create wonderful abstract portraits. To see Lucy’s work visit: www.oxfordartsociety.co.uk. Their medieval house, which is tucked away at the bottom of the village, was first renovated in Tudor times. Its enormous arched oak front door towers over petite Lucy giving the place an air of Alice in Wonderland as one steps onto the old flagstones of her beautiful rustic hallway. Two years ago the kitchen was a dingy space with a low ceiling and a wc awkwardly squeezed into the corner, blocking the light. Now it is bright and airy, taking advantage of both morning and evening sun through deep stone window alcoves on either side of the room. Lucy wanted a fresh simple kitchen as

the heart of her home and worked with designers at BarrKitchens to create an ‘old dairy’ feel. With white walls, understated cabinetry, grey slate flagstones and black AGA the no frill palette provides the perfect backdrop for this busy artistic family and their four legged friends. From the kitchen one’s eye is drawn through an old wooden door into the utility/boot room where the white washed stone walls, vintage butler sink and stable door brings a real feeling of another time. StuartBarrCDR were contracted to take on the building work for Lucy’s kitchen renovation. They lowered the floor by two feet, revealing the original full height stone walls and giving the room a feeling of light and space. With the ceiling height restored, the BarrKitchens team had a wonderful canvas with which to work. Lucy sought out BarrKitchens, as she knew that only bespoke cabinetry made by skilled craftsmen could really work with sloping ceilings and uneven walls, which she wanted to feature rather than cover up. A simple shaker style design with added cockbead detailing nods to the age of

the house, clever joinery sees the utility cupboards fit the sloping ceiling and a hand carved scribe fits the floor to ceiling larder cupboard into each and every groove of the adjacent stone wall. Discrete but powerful lighting means the kitchen retains its bright airy feel on even the dullest day. The workstation stands high off the floor, leaving space plenty of legroom to pull up a high stool close to the AGA. Cosy in the winter and cool in the summer, this kitchen strikes the perfect balance throughout the seasons. Lucy considers her kitchen with its bespoke detailing ‘a work of art’ and describes the hand carved panel designed to fit perfectly into the stonework beside it is ‘an extraordinary piece of workmanship’. Over a year on, Lucy continues to be delighted by her BarrKitchen and her beautifully renovated home. Four million South-East Residents Value their TV more than their Health

Additional Advice

hocking statistics released today from QHS, Buck’s trusted heating experts, show that over 4 million people in the South-East are living without a carbon monoxide monitor, despite thousands of people being rushed to hospital with suspected Carbon Monoxide poisoning last year, resulting in nearly 50 deaths.** The research was conducted for Gas Safety Week (15th – 19th September), which aims to raise awareness of gas safety in our homes. One in six Bucks residents actually felt that they would be more worried about their television packing up than them having a boiler that gives off carbon monoxide. This alarming statistic highlighted the lack of knowledge around the dangers. What’s more, over forty per cent of homeowners didn’t ask for an engineer’s qualification when they were working on gas appliances, and a third of people didn’t associate the maintenance of their boiler with the avoidance of carbon monoxide poisoning. Peter Tillotson, MD of QHS said: “It is essential that gas appliances are installed by Gas Safe Registered engineers. Bucks homeowners shouldn’t feel embarrassed

about asking for qualifications as it could end up saving you and your families’ lives. A reputable engineer will always be happy to show their qualifications. There are also low-cost measures that you can take to ensure your safety, including having an annual boiler safety check and installing a carbon monoxide monitor in your home. QHS urges people to take these simple actions and ensure they don’t become a statistic.” One in eight people in the South-East felt that carbon monoxide monitors were too expensive. Worryingly, eighteen per cent of the population cited their reason for not having one as ‘they already have a smoke alarm’, which would not detect carbon monoxide poisoning (unless the dual purpose alarm is purchased). Chris Bielby, spokesperson from Scotia Gas Networks and Chairman of the Gas Safety Trust said: “Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning. “It is incredibly important that we take this issue seriously and start implementing

• Employ a qualified engineer, who is registered with the Gas Safe Register (formerly CORGI), for work on gas appliances • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm that meets British or European Standards • Have fuel-burning appliances checked regularly by a qualified engineer • Ensure chimneys and flues are clean and not blocked • Ensure all rooms are well ventilated when an appliance is being used • Fit it an extractor fan in your kitchen.

measures like having annual boiler servicing, installing carbon monoxide alarms and checking engineer qualifications. We estimate that there are around 7,500 illegal gas fitters operating across the UK and up to 250,000 illegal gas jobs may be carried out each year.” QHS has been installing, repairing and maintaining central heating and gas boiler systems in High Wycombe, Bucks and Herts. since 1995. QHS is one of the largest independent maintenance providers in the Bucks area, with its entire staff being directly employed, gas safe registered engineers, ensuring the highest levels of customer service and safety. CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN

DESIGN TIPS

Upon moving into a new home, many people want to redesign their kitchen. For many people the kitchen is the centre of the home. It is the place where we create our culinary masterpieces, and gather with friends and family.

O

ne trend that is particularly sought-after is a contemporary kitchen design. The first thing that separates a contemporary kitchen from other styles is its clean lines and minimalist feel. Although some people equate contemporary with cold, it does not have to be so. “Cool” materials such as glass and steel used in a contemporary kitchen design can be “warmed” up by the strategic use of accessories or colour. Six major components that make up a contemporary kitchen are:

Glass Glass is an important feature of minimalist design. Glass can be incorporated into contemporary kitchen design through windows, lighting, shelving or toppers for an island. Cabinetry can also have glass doors which provide a visual of the inside. Metal The most popular type of metal used in the design of a contemporary kitchen is stainless steel. It is most often used in appliances such as refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers. The use of stainless steel gives an urban feel to a kitchen. Lighting When designing a contemporary kitchen, lighting is key. Many contemporary designs incorporate recessed lighting into ceilings and underneath cabinets. If however, you don’t’ like recessed lighting, track lighting or fixtures made of metal or glass can also impart a contemporary feel. Marble/Granite Marble and granite are usually used for countertops but fit well within contemporary kitchen design. They are both cool to the touch, allow for

78

SEPTEMBER2014

sharp clean lines and depending on the colour and design chosen really impart a big city feel to your kitchen. Colour As part of the minimalist design ethic of a contemporary kitchen, “cool” colours are usually used. “Cool” colours are those that come to mind; blues, greens, grey, silver and even black and white. Using these colours in your kitchen invokes a modern feel. When putting these elements together, four other design points to consider are: backsplash, cabinetry design, appliances and accessories. When it comes to backsplash, most contemporary kitchens use either tile or metal; your personal preference will decide. As far as cabinets are concerned, some designs don’t require pulls to open, while others use metal hardware. Having a built in design also provides great storage (because clutter does not fit into contemporary design at all). Appliances are an easy way to impart some contemporary style into your kitchen. As I mentioned earlier, many refrigerators, freezers, ovens and the like come in stainless steel. If you don’t really like the look of metal, all black or all white appliances also project a contemporary feel. The last component of contemporary kitchen design is that of accessories. Accessories are another way to easily modernise your kitchen, with a minimalist design. Contact a luxury kitchen specialist like Poggenpohl who specialise in bespoke kitchens and lead you to the contemporary kitchen of your dreams!

7I N TOF THE BEST E R I O R D E S I G N T R E N DS ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself wellgroomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh.

A

Here are the key interior trends for 2014 that you may want to think about incorporating: TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as 2014 sees us embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture in 2013 as quilted fabrics and leather became big news. In 2014, this trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily, in 2014 one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains 80

SEPTEMBER2014

or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Eastern-inspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, one-off pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters. TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted, in 2014 acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS In 2014, things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

Light up your life

t’s always exciting to see a new business start up in the local area, especially one that’s championing an exciting, contemporary approach to designing light into the way we live. Lighting by Plum is doing just that by bringing the innovation of London’s foremost lighting designers to the Chilterns. Specialising in the design of interior and exterior lighting schemes, they offer a flexible service with a strong emphasis on affordable creativity, “Designing with light is like using makeup, creating depth using shadows and highlights. If you want a room to look its best you need to make it up!” said Toria Thorpe, owner of Lighting by Plum. Have you ever struggled to create the right ambience in a room? You may not even have realised that it was the lighting at fault. With the guidance of a lighting designer you’ll discover it’s possible to transform cold, uninviting spaces into a warm, welcoming places purely using the power of light. An experienced lighting designer will evaluate a space in terms of its use, function, atmosphere and mood and then interpret the space through light. The creative use of lighting can encourage movement from one area to another, invite relaxation in a specific

place or persuade people to move straight through. “I believe that you instantly 'feel' if a space is comfortable, and this often has a huge amount to do with the way it is lit” says Toria. For example, the kitchen is a complex room to light correctly as it is such a multifunctional space. It requires the correct light levels to ensure the safe and accurate performance of culinary tasks, but it’s a space that’s often the hub of the house and so should feel inviting, comfortable and relaxing at the same time. Achieving this balance is a challenge, and the most obvious ‘solution’, installing a blanket set of downlights ,may not be desirable. Low quality downlights may not only be the wrong colour temperature, low output and incompatible with the chosen dimmers they can cause glare and shadows making it uncomfortable to stand in the room. It’s important to remember, using a lighting designer should not increase the amount of money spent on the lighting, it should just ensure that what is installed is well considered and appropriate. Preconceived Ideas We don’t need a lighting designer. Everyone who lives or works in a space where there is artificial lighting could use a lighting

designer. Lighting By Plum offer affordable, high-quality creativity meaning that lighting design is something that everyone can take advantage of. The Project is too small and doesn’t require a lighting Designer, There is no project too small in terms of lighting. Even lighting a small shower room needs careful consideration and Lighting By Plum gives you a flexible option to pay by the hour for as much or as little as you want. Using a Lighting Designer is too expensive. In many instances a lighting designer can actually save you money by taking advantage of manufacturers’ discounts not available outside the trade, reducing the amount of fittings required through precise calculation of required light levels and the associated long-term cost savings in terms of energy usage. There are a range of different services available from a basic concept service at (£60 per room) to a full design service from concept through to completion (priced on a project by project basis). Creating.Modern.Living.

he Summer has been pretty good, hasn’t it; makes you want to spend more time in the garden perhaps? Over the last 10 years, the ‘work from home’ community has grown & more recently, truly exploded, as has the requirement for garden offices, multi-functional rooms & granny annexes. It is now common place for people to either run their own small businesses or spend at least 1 day in the week working from home. As a consequence no longer do people want to battle on & make do with the kitchen table or pokey, dark study or spare room, cluttered with jobs & paperwork one never gets around to doing (or toys if one has a young, growing family), constant interruptions & distractions, or worse, a cold, draughty garden shed. Expectations have radically changed. Now eye-catching, attractive design is at the forefront when considering to invest in a garden room (environmentally friendly is really a given these days), combined with sustainability, light & warmth for year round use & versatility - to make them into what one wants whenever circumstances or needs change. There are a plethora of garden room companies & designs out there now that put to shame many new home developments, as do the efforts of the companies & teams of craftsmen & women that work, many through all weathers, to ensure their Customers get the best space for their investment, particularly given it’s both an emotional & financial one; so it’s got to be right. Ultimately however, when selecting one, you want to know that you are in safe, knowledgeable & professional hands. SIPS gardenrooms & classrooms, aka SIPSGR, is such a Company, a customer focused, family run, property development business, born out of the increasing need to support a better work-life balance,

through creating, designing & building good looking, long-lasting, sturdy, eco-friendly, light & open spaces to play & work, at home. They have designed, built & installed a broad & diverse range of garden studios & multi-purpose rooms for residential & business use (notably classrooms) & are genuinely geared towards meeting the needs of you, the Customer, whilst also adding value to your property. SIPSGR can take care of everything, from planning permission, which, for over 95% of garden room builds, is not required, building regulations, ground works & foundations to plastering, painting & finishing touches. No two garden rooms are the same; any number of designs & finishes can be achieved &, when combined with an average installation of 5 days – with the majority of the structure being manufactured off site in the UK, reducing waste, defects & build time – there is no better option to improve both the value of your home & quality of life. The SIPSGR Founder, Quentin Farrow, personally oversees & manages the whole process. He has the expertise, attention to detail, vision, & passion to support you in the design & build of your own dream space, to your specifications, using his team of carefully selected professionally qualified & skilled craftsmen & women & sustainably sourced, eco-friendly products & materials, wherever possible & suitable. You can make an appointment to view the new SIPSGR Showroom at Woodway Farm, Bicester Road, Long Crendon, Bucks, HP18 9EP. Autumn THE PERFECT TIME TO REVIVE YOUR LAWN

ow that the days are shortening and there is starting to be a hint of a chill in the air, it is easy to forget our lawns and assume that there is no more to be done in 2014. But we would be mistaken to think this. “Autumn is THE time when we should put some effort into our lawns. It’s what we do now that decides how our lawns will look next year,” comments Terry Nicholson of Lawnscience, the lawn care specialists. He offers the following advice for those of us who want to have great looking lawns in 2015.

N

SCARIFICATION

Autumn is the perfect time to really refresh your lawn and ensure that it is in great shape and looking its best for next year. Over time lawns become choked with thatch which causes weak growth and pale, thin lawns. Grass clippings, leaves and other decaying organic matter, if left on top of your lawn, will over time result in a deep thatch. When thatch is a problem it needs to be removed and this requires a powerful machine that will penetrate into the lawn and physically remove the thatch, a process called Scarification. A hand held rake just won’t do the job! Once the thatch is removed from your lawn it is on its way to being so much healthier and looking better. September/October is the ideal time for

90

SEPTEMBER2014

your lawn to be scarified. It is so important to know when to scarify, do it at the wrong time and you risk damaging your lawn, leaving you with a potentially costly repair job. OVER-SEEDING

Whilst you are scarifying your lawn it makes sense to apply an over-seed. Over-seeding is done by applying the perfect choice of seed to your lawn, this thickens the surface improving the appearance of your lawn and also reducing space for moss and weeds to form. Selecting the right seed for your lawn is probably best left to a skilled and experienced professional as there are many types of grass cultivars available and they all do different jobs. Some help lawns to survive in shady conditions, others give lawns a toughness that is required if young children are going to play on them for extended periods. Remember when over-seeding your lawn, seed does not germinate on grass, it germinates in soil therefore it is essential to ensure that any over-seed is raked into the lawn’s surface in order to achieve the best results. If you need a little guidance on Autumn Scarification and overseeding download a free copy of the Lawnscience guide at www. lawnscience.co.uk/ebook/ Autumn-lawn-care Lawnscience has been providing technical advice and treatments for domestic lawn for over 13 years.
