ARTBAG

Meet local Artist and Mother ARTBAG; known to her art students as Debra Franses. She is gaining recognition for her highly desirable Resin Handbag sculptures in the UK and throughout Buckinghamshire. Now represented by Clarendon Fine Art with Galleries in Marlow, Beaconsfield, Windsor and nationwide; you can also meet her in person at her studio showroom at 120 High Street Old Amersham.

W

What is it made from? Resin, It looks like glass because it’s perfectly transparent. I love the idea of letting the light come in and revealing what is usually hidden. I also use 22 ct gold plated barbed wire to represent the gilded cage some women may find themselves in as they give up careers for motherhood’s demands.

hat is ARTBAG? A giant resin handbag selfie! A transparent Sculpture in Resin shaped like a Handbag - A portrait of things and people we love full of memories and objects that hold value to us for a myriad of reasons. A baby’s first shoe, a ring, a poem, postcard, badge, ticket to a Bowie concert , a favourite lipstick, a perfume or sunglasses, old watch of a beloved relative, toy car, Lego and so on…all of this encased in a transparent handbag, preserved forever. Perfect for a mother’s day present! But why a handbag? We are what we carry, literally our beautiful baggage. There is actually something called ‘handbagology’ by Karen Pine, a Psychology Professor. You may have seen the recent exhibition at the V&A on “Handbags inside out” where the curators explored themes such as handbags as Status symbols, Celebrity worship, believing a bag is an ‘investment’, Identity and Feeling fat? The bag always fits…!

What gave you the idea to put things inside? I like to play with the memories an object can trigger. Its so personal, intimate and individual. My mum is always passing on objects she has collected from my family and each one tells a story. When we lose our memories, we lose our identity. I love how objects hold nostalgic pleasures for the whole family.

“It takes a good 15 years to become an overnight success!”

Best piece of advice? Do what you love, do it well and with passion and your audience will find you from my CSM tutor in 2004. Also, my friend from NYC Platon said to me in 2008 it takes a good 15 years to become an overnight success!

For one night only, on Tuesday the 22nd February, The Shed, The Hand & Flowers’ intimate private dining room on West Street is teaming up with Karan Gokani, Creative Director at Hoppers and Tom Kerridge’s Group Head Chef Chris Mackett, for a night of elevated Sri Lankan and South Indian cuisine inspired by the two Michelin-starred pub’s signature dishes.

carefully crafted tasting menu of original dishes will take guests on a gastronomic tour from the southern tip of India all the way down and across the magical island of Sri Lanka, with dishes that marry Chris’ vast knowledge of British classics and Karan’s love for spices. “In putting our bespoke menu together we have designed each dish keeping in mind the food and heritage of Sri Lanka and South India while paying homage to classic British pub food. I can’t remember being more excited about developing a menu, particularly our twist on The Hand & Flowers’ signature lamb bun with Chris. PROPOSALS, PLANNING & PRE-NUPS Many couples will be thinking about getting engaged this month, particularly on Valentine’s Day – one of the most popular days to propose throughout the year. Although the term pre-nup may stop many a happy couple in their tracks, there are benefits to planning ahead after you get engaged. Sue Andrews, partner and family law specialist at B P Collins LLP, explains how prenuptial agreements work.

“A

prenuptial agreement records a couple’s agreed intentions about financial, children and even pet arrangements if the relationship ends in divorce or separation,” Sue says. “Judges have a wide discretion when making financial orders, however a prenuptial agreement is one of the factors which a Judge must consider, and depending upon the circumstances, the Judge may either uphold it in its entirety or in other circumstances it is likely to influence their decisions and impact upon the outcome.” Influential Although not legally binding in the contractual sense, Sue says the amount of weight attached to prenuptial agreements has been increasingly influential. In simple terms, as long as a couple have entered freely into an agreement and had a full appreciation of its implications, the court should take it into account during divorce proceedings. The reference to “freely” is important, says Sue, who advises that both parties should take separate, independent legal advice to ensure fairness and that there is no duress or misrepresentation. Each must be open and honest with the other, so that if one party is giving up future rights, they make an informed decision with all relevant information. When to get a pre-nup “If you decide a prenuptial agreement is for you, then the time to make the arrangements is as soon as you decide to get married. It’s no good waiting until a couple of months before the big day because the emotion and the stress can put huge pressure on both parties and you should aim to sign it at least 28 days before the wedding,” she added.

30 FEBRUARY 2022

“It should be an agreement between future spouses or civil partners, and not one person imposing what they want on the other, and it will hopefully go some way to prevent at best or at least minimise expensive and acrimonious court proceedings.” Helps to resolve matters amicably Having a prenuptial agreement won’t give you a cast iron guarantee on the outcome, but it can certainly affect the way the Judge applies his or her discretion when making their determination or award. “More importantly,” concludes Sue, “couples are more likely to resolve matters amicably because they have already addressed matters and agreed what they want to happen upon separation or divorce.”

If emotional upset, anxiety and cost can be reduced, this will benefit all involved THE DETAILS BP Collins For expert legal advice on family and matrimonial matters, please call Sue Andrews on 01753 279046 or email familylaw@bpcollins.co.uk

The Five House of The Nova Collection – Merging New and Old at Royal Connaught Park

S

et within the expansive private landscaped grounds of Royal Connaught Park, an Edwardian era former Masonic School for Boys, is The Nova Collection, an impressive assemblage of new-build blocks. Divided into five houses – Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Admiral and Lancaster – each comprise a variety of striking apartments, ranging in price from £610,000 to £1.425 million. The five houses of The Nova Collection have been externally designed using weathered red brick to blend seamlessly with the Gothic architecture of the original buildings, now converted into modernised period apartments. Admiral House provides some of the largest homes available at the scheme, with the mixture of two and three-bedroom ground floor and duplex apartments proving popular with downsizers. Ranging in size from 1,066 sq. ft. to 2,368 sq. ft. the well-proportioned interiors are configured to meet modern lifestyle needs, whilst each one benefits from private outside space in the form of a patio, balcony or terrace. The largest block is Lancaster House, consisting of 33 two, three and four-bedroom apartments. Taking in uninterrupted views of the grounds and surrounding countryside, the majority of homes include balconies and terraces or access to a private garden. One of the most impressive properties available in The Nova Collection is situated within Lancaster House – a 2,422 sq. ft. three-bedroom duplex, priced at £1.425 million, complete with two large balconies and considerable open-plan living spaces. Only one unit remains at Oxford House, a boutique building comprising four two-bedroom

32 FEBRUARY 2022

apartments, with the final 872 sq. ft. balcony home available at £610,000. Yale House is a splendid selection of sizeable two and three-bedroom apartments and duplexes ranging in size from 1,055 sq. ft. to 2,056 sq. ft., with a selection including private terraces or balconies. Currently, only five apartments remain at Harvard House where the majority of homes are two-bedroom duplexes, as well as a selection of one and two-bedroom apartments, providing accommodation sized between 1,173 sq. ft. to 1,593 sq. ft. Perfectly located in the heart of Bushey, Royal Connaught Park is a short drive to Bushey Overground Station (a daily residents’ shuttle service runs from the development to the Station, as well as to other key local destinations), which connects to London Euston in under 15 minutes. One of Hertfordshire’s most sought-after towns, Bushey offers a variety of well-established boutique shops, bars and restaurants. For those with their own cars there is ample underground car parking and the facility for electric charging units, as well as cycle storage spaces.

THE DETAILS Prices at Royal Connaught Park start from £610,000 for a twobedroom apartment. For further information on the last remaining homes for sale in The Nova Collection, please contact the sales office on Tel: 01923 222292 or Email: info@thecomergroup.com

Why pensions remain one of the best ways to achieve long-term benefits How many times have you heard someone say, “I don’t understand pensions”?

Pensions can be confusing, and what should be a simple and effective long-term savings vehicle is often made more complicated by the various rules and regulations that apply.

A pension is excluded from the inheritance tax calculation on your estate There is no potential inheritance tax to pay on the value of your pension when you die.

A pension can be passed on to your nominated beneficiaries when you die In most instances, you can nominate the beneficiaries for your personal pension which they can inherit when you die.

A pension is a crucial element of your overall financial plan and can be one of the best ways to build wealth efficiently over the long term. To help you dispel some of the “pension myths” we’ve listed just some of the features that can make a pension one of the best long-term savings tools: Tax relief on contributions What does it actually mean? If you are a basic-rate taxpayer and were to contribute £100 from your salary into your pension, it would actually only cost you £80. Tax-free growth within the pension Unlike some other savings vehicles, the growth in the value of a pension is tax-free.

Income flexibility You have the option to purchase a secure income or you can take flexible income from your pension. One of the ways to a successful retirement is to act by getting your current pension(s) reviewed and having a robust plan in place, one which reflects your individual circumstances, aspirations and goals.

Tax-free lump sum when you take your pension You can currently access your personal pension(s) from age 55 (due to increase to 57 by 2028) and take up to 25% of the value as a tax-free lump sum.

Using the expertise and experience of a professional financial planner will provide you with the confidence in your financial future, so that you can get on with living your life without having to worry about money.

BUY TO LET HUNTER B

uy To Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a short-term, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny property in Finchampstead? One of our guests, Michelle Teixeira, recently had a chat with us about her experience. How did you come to be staying in one of our properties? We moved to the UK on a company transfer for work. Selling up everything in South Africa to start our new life journey we needed somewhere to use as a base from where we could begin settling in to a new country and begin looking for our long-term home. We came to the UK with just a few suitcases of clothes and our doggies, and hopes for our new life. But we had no furniture or anything else which was why a managed short-term rental was perfect. It gave us the breathing space to arrange everything we needed without feeling pressurised to have everything in order from the moment we arrived in the UK.

38 FEBRUARY 2022

How has the experience with the BTLH team been? It has been amazing. I was doing all of this blind, from thousands of miles away and with little to no idea on how or where to rent. BTLH become my trusted advisor and guided me through the whole process. What has it been like staying in our property? It was in perfect condition when we arrived with all the services offered and all working from the moment we walked through the door. Everything we could think of was waiting for us from spoons to towels. We felt at home and perfectly comfortable from the moment we arrived.

I was doing all of this blind, from thousands of miles away and with little to no idea on how or where to rent. BTLH become my trusted advisor and guided me through the whole process.

What would you say to other people in your position? If this is being read by anyone emigrating to the UK I would advise them to contact BTLH immediately! The UK rental market is extremely tough to navigate on a good day, but even more so if you add in the extra requirement of a pet friendly home. Renting through BTLH bought us the time and peace of mind to properly navigate the UK rental market for our ideal long-term rental whilst living in a secure and fully furnished home with all the amenities allows. We are so pleased to be part of welcoming Michelle and her family to England. The owner of Michelle’s serviced home has earned double in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home with a hassle free, flexible investment.

Looking to the Future There are two camps of thought about how you go about getting the best out of children; put simply the carrot or stick approach.

I

n Dickensian times the stick would almost certainly have prevailed but we have come a long way since then and the power of praise is having a transformative effect on children as they push themselves to succeed because of the belief that is being instilled in them rather than achieving purely because they had to or because they were driven to do what was expected of them. The Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte are undoubtedly two of the most identifiable figures of the 19th Century and their ability to inspire and bring out the best in their men is a fact of history. Napoleon described himself as “a dealer in hope” and Wellington, despite his undisputed rapport with his men, still said in his later years that if he had the chance to live his life again, he would “give more praise.” The power of encouragement and praise is second to none. If a teacher conveys to a child the belief that they can achieve whatever they set their mind to, I have yet to see a child that has not performed better because of the belief that has been shown in them. This is something that we seek to impress constantly at Thorpe House. In our Lower School you will see our display boards about the “Power of yet”, assemblies are all about recognition of pupil achievement and building a school community where the focus is about encouragement of

44 FEBRUARY 2022

one’s peers and drawing inspiration from the accomplishments of others. Every pupil at Thorpe is unique and this is something we celebrate. We don’t seek to turn out a particular type of individual because their differences are what make them so special; our pupils fulfil their potential because the boys use their individual talents to bring out the best in one another and it is the greatest testament to the success of the school to see how they encourage one another. Most recent evidence of this has been in the County Cup football competition where we have two-year groups (out of 5) competing in the semi-finals, totally overcoming the odds given the size of our school relative to the schools against which we have competed. Interest in the school this year has been exceptional. We will be full in the Senior part of the school in September but we do still have some places in our Lower School and we would be delighted to show you the school at our forthcoming Open Morning on 16th March. It is increasingly important that if you would like your son to join us at Thorpe that early registration is recommended.

Making Change Exciting How a well-crafted leadership programme prepares children for senior school and beyond. Nicola Atkinson, Head of Upper Prep and Learning Support, and Katy Edwards, Curriculum Coordinator, at Maltman’s Green Prep School tell us more.

R

esilient children make for happy children, content and adaptable in the face of change. As a school it is our duty to ensure we deliver high class education for our pupils and that we also prepare them for change, be that changing class, year group or moving school all together. The biggest change our pupils will face is leaving the comfort and safety of our school environment at the end of Year 6, and it is vital that we equip them with the tools needed to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented to them in senior school and beyond. Problem solving, critical thinking, public speaking, team-work, collaboration - these are all skills that our pupils develop through a variety of enrichment and leadership activities in Year 6. Progressing to senior school having practised debating, for instance, gives them the confidence to speak in front of others and the wherewithal to gather their thoughts into a well-constructed argument. Our Young Enterprise entrepreneurial challenge helps them to work positively with others and to understand the components of small-business enterprise, to develop budgeting and even sales skills. All pupils are given the chance to assume roles of responsibility that allow them to grow in confidence, act with integrity, be kind, tackle problems, respect the views of others, encourage their peers and communicate clearly - all important attributes for the future. And our careers event introduces them to a range of career options to inspire and motivate them for future success. Entering senior school with these experiences will undoubtedly make them more resilient, better able to face challenges and the reality of adult life with confidence and a can-do attitude. It is also vital to provide pupils with new

experiences, giving them the opportunity to explore and develop new talents and passions. Our Bushcraft activity helps pupils develop an appreciation for the natural world, teaching them about the environment and nurturing responsible citizens of the future. It also teaches practical skills that use problem solving and initiative, and there is a focus on mindfulness that fosters mental wellbeing. Our first aid workshop gives pupils life-saving skills and the confidence needed for emergency situations, and our ‘Sports Leaders’ award fosters the building of team work skills, alongside promoting physical health. Leadership programmes should also develop an understanding of the world and its people, helping children adopt an outward facing view underpinned by respect and empathy, and empowering them to engage with a wide-range of people from different backgrounds and cultures. Our Maltman’s Mindsets go hand in hand with this, nurturing ideals that encourage our pupils to become worldly, wellrounded citizens. A well-crafted leadership programme has the potential to see children develop into resilient, versatile individuals, ready to take risks, face challenges, seize new opportunities and question their own thinking. Change, which may have been seen as daunting, can instead become exciting!

A Unique Language of Learning Davenies’ caring and inclusive environment, to which all boys contribute, is at the heart of everything we do. It is from the sense of community observed by our founder, Reverend Newton, tending to his beehives during World War I that a school where boys would embrace service and enjoy each other’s company was envisaged.

E

xcellent facilities and high quality and contemporary teaching approaches, coupled with our founder’s traditional values, ensure that every boy experiences a breadth of educational opportunities at Davenies. Our unique language of learning encourages and cultivates a lifelong eagerness for learning, whether academic, creative, artistic or sporting. Supported by exceptional pastoral care, we engage and encourage the boys to discover their own passions and talents. With inspiration, they develop determination and resilience, and are challenged to reach their potential. Davenies’ spirit provides the stepping stones that develop courteous, confident, thoughtful and independent young men, and supports our School’s motto: singulus pro fraternitate laborans – each striving for the good of all. From their earliest years, boys are encouraged to

relish the learning experience and enterprises such as the unique Davenies Award Scheme, which provides enrichment to the learning experience of Years 7 and 8, and the permeation of technology in our teaching and learning ensure we offer a truly independent educational experience. Fundamental to this is our understanding of boys and how we approach their learning, whilst never losing sight of each boy as an individual. We are committed to an education both in and out of the classroom, enabling our boys to learn transferable skills such as teamwork and leadership, thereby preparing them for life at the country’s leading senior schools and beyond. Fostering an inspiring school spirit Shanze, Head Girl at St Mary’s School

M

y name is Shanze and I am the Head Girl at St Mary’s. I am currently in Year 13 but I joined St Mary’s in Year 8. This meant that not only was I already nervous about joining a new school, I was aware I was joining when everyone already knew one another. From my first day at St Mary’s, I knew that my fears were unwarranted. I still remember walking into school on the first day and one of the girls in my new year approaching me and starting up a conversation. This helped me feel so welcome and fun fact – she’s turned out to be one of my best friends! This was just the first example of the friendly atmosphere at St Mary’s which I experienced as soon as I stepped through the door. St Mary’s is a school that helps the girls reach out and grow through its supportive and encouraging environment. The school enforces the importance of attending co-curricular clubs and it does this by ensuring that there is something for each and every girl. There are so many opportunities offered at St Mary’s. These include a number of sports, music, cooking, art and textiles, Duke of Edinburgh, LAMDA, Model United Nations to name but a few. These opportunities help girls build up their confidence and try out new things, which they may not have even considered in the past.

54 FEBRUARY 2022

One of the greatest things about St Mary’s is that there are always teachers here to talk to and there are always other students looking out for one another. I still vividly remember not having the best day when I was in Year 9 and a Sixth Former coming up to me and asking if I needed someone to talk to. This is one of the things that has really stuck with me throughout my time here and it’s actions like these which have really given me a sense of belonging in this school. I am currently in my final year of A levels studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. As an aspiring medic I wanted to push myself to do the best I could and while these subjects can be quite difficult, I have the support of the teachers here who are always willing to make the time to give you the support and assistance you need. My final year here is a bittersweet moment. While I’m excited to branch out further and experience new opportunities, I also remember that I am going to be leaving this wonderful community behind and I will forever be grateful for everything it has already given me and continues to do so.

Education makes one fit company for themselves One of the great benefits of private tuition is the focused and specific learning that is designed around your children’s goals and challenges. We use an aspirational approach to understand learning needs and design programs specific to each pupil in reflection of their English language and literature needs.

E

ducation is facing a number of changes and challenges that not only make it difficult for schools to adapt and keep up with, but also children. As a consequence we aim to offer one of the very best platforms to help support your childs learning in english so that it may transfer across to all subjects. English is not just about communicating through language, it allows us to develop skills of understanding, insight, and inference. Its aim is to help us prepare for future prospects such as interviews, reports and provides us with the confidence to deliver a message, clearly and effectively to others. Throughout the pandemic we have seen adaptations to a variety of teaching methods, from online learning groups to virtual lessons. All of which play a role. Consequently we don’t only offer 121 face to face tuition but also virtual lessons that have been built on a system of teaching long before the pandemic with a series of international schools and colleges that we work with. As a result we have been fortunate enough to maintain the excellent quality of education and learning with little disruption due to the pandemic. Now , in a period leading up to exams, children can become very stressed, even for children that are doing well; regardless of how much you know about a specific subject. An exam is a place in which

58 FEBRUARY 2022

you will be marked for your ability on the day. That’s tough. Even adults experience stress in these circumstances. The good news is that with excellent preparation, support and an understanding of well thought out and thorough exam techniques, students can rest assured that our goal is to bring about transformational results . Good English is at the center of our culture and communication. Our ability to hone this skill will help us to deal with many hurdles in life across a range of subjects. At the English Master, we are dedicated to ensuring the success of young persons through all ages so that they may progress into the future in a confident and structured manner.

The importance of SCHOOL OPEN DAYS

s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? 60 FEBRUARY 2022

• What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Are a good candidate for fat freezing? You may have heard of it before, maybe you’ve even looked in to having it done. I want to share some important information that will help you understand if you are a good candidate for fat freezing, and how to choose the right device and the right clinic.

F

at freezing is a non-surgical treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells leaving you with reduced areas. It is suitable on stubborn areas of fat you just can’t shift. The fat cells are cooled down to a very specific temperature which causes them to die while leaving surrounding tissues unharmed. Over a 12 week period, your body metabolizes the dead cells through your lymphatic system leaving you with permanently reduced contours. We use CoolTech Define which eliminates up to 60% of the cells. Over the years, we have seen several other brands come and go and only a few have maintained their position as market leaders. CoolTech is one. Here are some key things to consider: 1. Your body shape and BMI: Fat freezing is not for people who are unhealthily overweight. Fat freezing reduces localised areas of fat. The shape of an ideal candidate will have a localised convex shape. More bluntly put, a bulge. Depending on how much fat there is to begin with, some people will need one treatment, where others might need two or three. The size and frame of your body will also need to be taken into consideration. 2. Soft or hard fat: if you can pinch the areas you want to reduce, it can be treated. If it is firm, you may have a higher ratio of visceral fat, which unfortunately cannot be treated. 3. The brand of the device: Like anything, you get what you pay for. There are different grades of technologies, and some are cosmetic, while others, such as Coolsculpting and CoolTech, are medical

74 FEBRUARY 2022

grade. They are manufactured by reputable organisations who have clinical studies to prove the efficacy and safety of the technology. If you want to learn more about the technical differences between medical and cosmetic grade devices, have at look at the Blog section on our website. 4. The clinic and the practitioner: The experience of the practitioner is just as important as the brand of the device. Ask to see images of the practitioner’s clients, and not just images their supplier has provided for marketing purposes. 5. Contraindications: if you have certain medical conditions, you may not be suitable for fat freezing. For a full list of contraindications, have a look at our website. Fat freezing can be a positive life changing treatment and change your body shape forever. We have treated over 2,500 people in the last 8 years and have seen dramatic transformations giving people more confidence and motivation to lead a healthy lifestyle. We are always here to discuss any questions you may have, and we offer free consultations.

HOUSE &

GARDEN – Keep it local for everything house and home – I MAGE: MARLOW STOVES

COVER STORY

This is truly bespoke design

Our Garden Room is Your Garden Room

We listen to your requirements and expectations… this is our inspiration.

O

ur Garden Room not only makes beautifully crafted timber frame buildings but is also immensely proud of the professional design service that brings a project to life, from concept to completion. Every client’s requirements and each garden provide a unique set of design criteria which we address and create around… your expectations are our inspiration. This is truly bespoke design… Our Garden Room is Your Garden Room.

78 FEBRUARY 2022

The journey starts with a site visit and personal design consultation when our designer will assess, advise on and survey the proposed location; listen to what you envisage; and discuss with you the according design and build solutions. We then come back to the studio to draw up your design and put the initial costing together. Respecting that this is an important and significant investment and decision for you, we want to invest as much in the relationship as possible. So, the next step is to welcome you back to the showroom to present and discuss the scheme and estimate. At the same time, we can look at all the design options, from windows and doors to flooring, fitted furniture, heating, soft furnishings and so on. Once you are happy with everything, you commission us

with an initial deposit and we agree dates in the production and delivery schedule. We then set to work in making your dream garden room come to life! MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE. Making dreams come true does not come from a modular off the shelf product, it comes from a service that is perfectly tailored to your needs. We listen to what you want and design the perfect solution: from fully fitted offices, to places to relax and retreat, entertainment spaces with wet bars, to gyms, games and playrooms or even a vast multi-function pool house. With our parent company as bespoke furniture makers we can also create the most beautiful custom made interiors for your garden room.

FUTURE PROOFING FOR YEARS TO COME. It is also important to us that we create perfect harmony and balance within the garden and the relationship with the house, so addressing the surrounding landscape is also part of the service. We will also do all we can to future proof the building to anticipate as many ongoing demands as possible. Your garden room will be there for years to come, so what needs to be a kid’s playroom today might need to be a bar and chill out space in the future. So, even after your garden room is in situ, we remain at your service to design additional fitted furniture, some internal space partitions, or perhaps to add a beautiful Pavilion to one side of your Retreat for some extra seasonal entertainment space.

Julian Bly, our Design Director, is an interior, architectural and furniture designer. Over his career he has designed everything from hotels to houses, and having worked for both Smallbone and Plain English he specialises in bespoke furniture and joinery. With time spent in America and London, he now loves living back in Berkhamsted, the town where he went to school.

SUSTAINABILITY AND KEEPING IT LOCAL. Sustainability and the environment are always key factors in the design process, from making sure the building has as little impact as possible on the surrounding nature, to using FSC certified timber, and offering living roofs and solar panels. For every building we install, we proudly plant fifty trees locally, for future generations to enjoy. As well as employing all our own makers and fitters, we also build the teams of suppliers, craft and trades people to bring your project to life, using as many local firms as possible.

“Designing a bespoke garden room is all about listening to the client and being inspired by their needs, always with an unerring eye on every detail, from concept to completion.”

PASSIONATE ABOUT DESIGNING BEAUTIFUL SPACES. More immediate, simpler, adaptable and hassle free than an extension or loft conversion, we love you being involved in as much of the process as possible. You are always welcome at our showroom in Berkhamsted High Street to go though the designs and specifications, and also to our factory where you can see your garden room and interiors being made. We are passionate about designing and building beautiful spaces where you, your family and friends can make dreams come true, so we look forward to seeing you soon and starting your journey. www.ourgardenroom.co.uk FEBRUARY 2022 79

Meet The Italian Brand Rewriting The Rules of Comfort Anna Howell, Chaplins Interiors Editor

L

udwig Mies Van Der Rohe once said that it’s easier to design a skyscraper than a comfortable chair. After thirty years of searching, we’re inclined to agree. Skyscrapers, for all their bluster, have proven to be underwhelming overlords; kingpins in concrete jungles that offer little in the way of biodiversity. Sitting, however, is a whole other ballgame. The one we dedicate nine hours of the day to. Often without giving it much thought. And yet finding comfort in the rhythms of work and play has proven to be essential in finding any kind of equilibrium in the everyday. To paraphrase one Pierluigi Masini, it’s only when the body experiences wellbeing that the mind can ride the waves of the imagination. It’s out of this context that a truly superlative seating brand has bloomed. One that has no interest in creating just another chair. And whose meticulously-made furnishings would have given even the cynical Mies a reason to smile. Not all technology is visible to the eye. Indeed, if connectivity is anything to go by, most of the best innovations take place just out of sight. It’s the same with Gellyfoam — a patented material that introduces into contemporary living spaces the kind of softness once reserved for travelling astronauts. “It is a material that can accommodate any posture,” confirms designer Francesco Binfaré,

82 FEBRUARY 2022

“It’s out of this context that a truly superlative seating brand has bloomed. One that has no interest in creating just another chair”

correcting it with all the care of a mother tucking a child in at night.” Hyperbole aside, it’s a remarkable invention. And just one of the components that make Edra sofas the crème de la crème of comfort. Nowadays, the core collection also counts on the inclusion of Smart Cushions. Plump, technological pillows that sound like they should belong in the Metaverse, but were actually developed ten years ago in Tuscany. With a slight pressure of the hand they can rise or bend in any

direction — movements for a sofa that wants to be in sync with the way people think, rest and dream. This sense of atomised comfort is typical of EDRA’S approach to design. Before, it was the sofa, or rather the designer, that dictated how one should sit. Now, in Edra’s world, it’s the user who suggests the final form the sofa should take. On the one hand, it’s a generous gesture. But it’s also an ancient one, too. Stefano Pasqualetti wrote recently that for all its advancement, architecture remains a basic discipline, dedicated to creating a relatable space that puts men and women at the centre of their own experience. This ability to put people first or “build to human” is easily the greatest talent of Edra. Through a mix of sumptuous, enticing designs, they seek to understand people in their chosen place. Without ever having to sacrifice on the beauty, aspiration or quality that makes the label Made in Italy great. chaplins.co.uk

HOW BIG SHOULD I BUILD MY HOUSE EXTENSION?

O

ften when extending we get preoccupied with only thinking of the project in terms of square metres, not in terms of what that size is adding to the house. Bigger is not always better when it comes to house extensions, and there are often ways of creating the feeling of more space, without adding a large extension. This is often achieved through clever design, not only of the new space, but also what is already there. If you are going bigger build simple shapes. The more complex a building is, the more it will cost to build and the more it will cost to run. Every time you introduce a corner in an external wall you slow down the building process. Each time you introduce a valley or a hip, the costs of the roof timbers rise and the labour timescale is extended. If you want to save on your build costs, avoid overcomplicated shapes.
