Navigating the Summer Holidays as a Separated Parent

T

he Summer Holidays can be a difficult time for separated parents especially if both parents want to take their children on holiday. Changes will need to take place during the 6-week holiday period which are different to normal term time arrangements. If you share parental responsibility, the other parent has the right to know where their children are and what they are doing. If taking a child out of the jurisdiction you should obtain consent from the people who have parental responsibility unless it has been granted by the Court otherwise it could be seen as abduction. If there is already a Child Arrangements Order in place, parents need to ensure that any arrangements planned do not breach the Order. Within the Order there tends to be a section that considers contact arrangements during the school holidays. If planning child arrangements over the summer period, try considering the following: • Arrangements are as child focused as possible. • Ensure that any agreements made with the other parent are in writing. • If planning to take the children abroad, discuss your plans with the other parent as soon as possible to avoid any potential clashes. • Complete a diary/calendar that both parents have access to so it is easy to

see where the children are and who they are with to ensure handovers are effective. • If the child has a different surname to you and you are travelling abroad, obtain a letter from the other parent confirming that they consent to you going on holiday with the child. It is becoming increasingly common for airlines to ask for this, if you have a Court Order, this can also be used. • Try and be flexible with the other parent, this may be the first time that the children are going on holiday without them. In some circumstances, you may feel that it is inappropriate to let the other parent leave the jurisdiction with your child. Please seek legal advice if you have any concerns regarding this.

CHEF LAURIE GEAR

July recipe & kitchen news

J

uly truly is a season when superb produce is readily available across the UK. This month I have chosen to focus on our namesake artichokes and another of my favourite ingredients - brown crab. The two pair beautifully with the two flavoured mayonnaise. The balance

of seafood from the brown crab meat whilst the hazelnuts add a further layer of textural crunch. The base can of course include your favourite salad ingredients of the season and a simple squeeze of lemon will suffice if you do not want to tackle the mayonnaise.

RECIPE: ARTICHOKE SALAD WITH FRESH CRAB AND TOASTED HAZELNUTS Ingredients

Serves 6

• 300g 50/50 freshly picked crab or 1 medium to large crab picked into white and brown meat • 5 large globe artichokes • 1 avocado sliced and coated in a little olive oil and lemon juice • 6 ripe tomatoes halved then sliced • 4 baby jem lettuce cleaned and shredded • 4 spring onions sliced • 1 bunch radishes sliced • 6 cooked cooled and diced new potatoes

For the Mayonnaise • 100g toasted hazelnuts • 3 teaspoons hazelnut paste or purée if unavailable 4 teaspoons tahini • 6 tablespoons fresh mayonnaise split into 2 bowls • 1 tablespoon good olive oil • 1 lemon zested & juiced + 2 lemons for the artichoke • 2 teaspoons Maldon salt

Celebrate the Arrival of Summer Exclusively for the Summer Months, we are delighted to offer again our Artichoke a la carte menu for dinner alongside our Tasting menu for Wednesdays and Thursdays only until 18th August 2022. three-courses £80 with complimentary amuse and pre-dessert Reserve online @ www.artichokerestaurant.co.uk

Method 1. Fill a bowl with cold water and squeeze in the juice of your 2 lemons and pop in the squeezed flesh. 2. Pull down on the dark outer leaves of the artichokes removing them until you are left with the light tender leaves in the centre, then slice the remaining top off and trim around the stalk until you are left with the cleaned artichoke, half the artichoke then using a teaspoons gently dig out the fluffy fibres in the centre of the choke 3. Cook in boiling salted water until a small sharp knife can pass into them. Strain and return them into the lemon water to cool - slice when ready. 4. Blend your brown crab meat with one of your bowls of fresh mayonnaise 5. Then using the hazelnut paste or tahini blend into your second bowl of mayonnaise. 6. Seasoning both to taste with a little of the fresh lemon juice and salt. 7. Combine your salad ingredients and dress with the olive oil lemon zest a little lemon juice and a pinch of salt. To serve 8. Divide the salad between 4 bowls. 9. Stack the white crab meat and sliced cooked artichoke onto the salads. 10. Pipe or spoon alternate dabs of the 2 different mayonnaise around the salad Sprinkle each brown with a generous amount of the toasted hazelnut

The Artichoke Restaurant 9 Market Square Old Amersham Tel: 01494 726611 www.artichokerestaurant.co.uk Chef notes Fresh crab and freshly made mayonnaise work best however a decent quality shop mayonnaise and pre picked crab will do the job simply fine. Fresh artichoke has little substitutes again but preserved artichokes from a jar would work well with some sliced green olives added for good measure. To boost flavour and texture even higher the addition of some artichoke crisps can be made by washing thinly slicing and deep frying some Jerusalem artichokes scattering over your salad at the end.

BBC Proms 2022 THE WORLD’S GREATEST CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 15 July – 10 September 2022, Royal Albert Hal

T

he Proms returns to the iconic Royal Albert Hall this summer for its first full eight-week season in two years. Its aim is to bring the best in classical music to the widest possible audience, remaining true to founder-conductor Henry Wood’s original vision in 1895. Whether you are a classical connoisseur or think ‘classical music is not for me’ there is something for everyone in the eight week series of concerts. First Night of the Proms 2022: Verdi Requiem Friday 15 July 2022, 7.30pm Hope and grief, mourning and celebration, thunder and tenderness come together in Verdi’s mighty Requiem. After two years of reducedsized performances, the Royal Albert Hall once again rings with the massed voices of the BBC Symphony Chorus and Crouch End Festival Chorus, launching the 2022 Proms with this choral 2 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

masterpiece, which brings all the high drama of 19th-century opera to its emotive setting of the Latin Mass for the Dead. Sakari Oramo will conduct a spectacular First Night of the 2022 BBC Proms. Giuseppe Verdi had a complicated relationship with religion: he asked to be buried with just ‘one priest, one candle, one cross’. But as a born dramatist, he knew how to tell a great story – and his colossal Requiem encompasses death, rebirth and the end of the world itself, in music that simply blazes with passion and power. A truly magnificent First Night of the 2022 BBC Proms.

Has my family member been unduly influenced to make a Will in someone else’s favour? Have you lost a loved one only to find that their last Will was not as expected? Has it been radically different from what they told you before? Is it different from earlier Wills they prepared under which you were a beneficiary? Do you think that someone has unduly influenced or exerted pressure on them to change their Will? If so, read on... What is undue influence? A Will is only valid if it complies with the relevant formalities as to its execution and is substantively valid. However, a Will is not considered substantively valid if the testator’s approval and execution has been obtained by coercion or fraud. Coercion can take different forms. Commonly, coercion is identified as overbearing pressures on the testator, although this should be distinguished from mere persuasion and appeals to ties of affection. On the other hand, fraud occurs where a party poisons the testator’s mind against another, who would otherwise be a natural beneficiary of the testator’s estate. This is done by casting dishonest aspersions on that person’s character which causes the testator to take a dim view of that individual.

What should I consider when challenging? When challenging a Will on the basis of undue influence the Court will consider a variety of different factors. There is typically no single event or incident which you can point to when challenging a Will under this head, however, there are certainly a number of relevant factors which you rely on. Common examples of relevant factors include: 1. The physical and mental health of the testator. If you think the declining health of your loved one made them more vulnerable to submit to overbearing pressure/ coercion, it could be worth investigating matters further with a solicitor. The will of a weak and ill person may be more easily overborne that that of a hale and hearty one. Edwards v Edwards at WTLR 1387.

2. Was a professional involved in drafting the Will? If so, it may be worth investigating the circumstances under which the Will was prepared. Similarly, if this was a homemade Will, when and how was it prepared? Evidence that a testator had received proper and adequate independent advice will diminish the possibility of a finding of undue influence. By contrast the involvement of the major beneficiary may invite heightened scrutiny. 3. The Courts will consider a “drip, drip” approach. Undue influence does not necessarily have to occur on one single occasion and can also be proven on the basis of being subject to pressure over a length of time. If you suspect that your loved one has been vulnerable to undue influence, we recommend that you note the incidents which have roused your suspicions which can often be useful in ‘painting the bigger picture’. 4. Is the Will otherwise explicable? You should assess whether the Will is explicable in light of the family/ friend relationships. For example, a breakdown in the relationship between family members may go some way to explain why individuals have been left out of a Will and conversely, why others may receive a more generous inheritance. Burden of proof When alleging undue influence, the burden on proof is on you to prove that the Will is invalid. It is worth noting that proving undue influence can often be difficult. The individual who is applying the undue influence will normally conduct their acts without other present to ensure there are no witnesses. Similarly, it is easier for these individuals to destroy any supporting evidence as it their motives are typically unknown to others. When should I act? Although there is no strict deadline to bring forward a claim of undue influence, we recommend that you act as soon as possible as the process could become more complicated if the estate has already been distributed. If you would like to discuss a possible claim, please do not hesitate to contact Sangita Manek on sam@blasermills.co.uk or call on 01494 770980

OUT & ABOUT

The number of cohabitating couples is rocketing across the country… …so why is there still so much misunderstanding about each partners’ rights? Sue Andrews, B P Collins’ family partner explains:

M

any couples still believe that if they live together for a certain period of time or have children together, they are in a ‘common law marriage’ and will have the same rights, if they separate, as they would have had if they’d married. However, as B P Collins’ family team wish to make very clear, this is not the case in England and Wales. In fact, couples living together don’t currently acquire rights automatically. “Couples who live together never acquire the same financial rights and responsibilities, no matter how long they are together and regardless of whether or not they have children. If you own a property, are moving into a partner’s property or purchasing a property together, you should think carefully about your respective interests in that property. It might seem unromantic at the time, however thinking about this early on should avoid, at best, disagreements and, at worst, legal proceedings if things do not work out between you both. Documenting your agreement should avoid a bitter dispute if the relationship breaks down and your then former partner seeks to claim an interest in your home perhaps because of monies he or she paid or because he or she carried out works on the property.

3 2 J U LY 2 0 2 2

Couples who live together never acquire the same financial rights and responsibilities, no matter how long they are together and regardless of whether or not they have children

THE DETAILS BP Collins Legal advice is vital because each couple is different and there are a number of agreement options. Please contact B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995 for further information. www.bpcollins.co.uk

Key agreements to choose from If a property is owned by one person and the other is not to acquire an interest, a solicitor is likely to suggest a simple and relatively inexpensive deed of waiver to record your agreement that, regardless of payments that the non-owning person makes or work undertaken, they are not to acquire an interest in your property. However, if it is agreed that they are to acquire an interest or in the event of a new property being purchased, then a declaration of trust can be prepared to record what is agreed about what each person’s interest is intended to be, or might become over time, subject to payments being made or work undertaken. Another option is a cohabitation agreement. This is a lengthier document and is likely to be suggested if a couple want to record their agreement about matters over and above property ownership. It could deal with for instance who pays what bills; childcare or petcare arrangements or even how the household chores are distributed – anything can be included.”

ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE INSURED? When choosing home insurance, more often than not we go for the quickest or cheapest option, perhaps not totally confident but hoping for the best. Whilst this approach might seem like the most convenient at renewal, there’s a risk of rushing and not considering the quality of cover on offer or the actual value of our possessions, assuming an ‘off-theshelf’ product will provide adequate protection. In reality, insurance is far from a one-size fits all scenario. Estimating the value of our homes and contents isn’t something we do regularly and it can be easy to forget or dismiss things. But inaccurately calculating the rebuild cost or the total value of your contents could leave you open to the risk of being underinsured. To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing. For example,

if you had a fire at home and the value of your contents is stated at £70,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £150,000, then you’re underinsured, and the reality is your policy won’t pay more than £70,000, leaving you to pick up the shortfall.

• Estimate the cost if you had to buy new, rather than the price you paid

It’s particularly important that those who live in larger, higher value homes or have expensive items – perhaps jewellery, fine art or collections – are mindful that standard insurance may not fully protect them or include features such as agreed values and access to specialist repair/replacement services.

• Check your policy for any set limits for valuables and single items such as jewellery

So how can you avoid underinsurance? Go through each room accounting for anything you would need to replace in event of a claim – include things like soft furnishings, curtains and furniture, as well as the highvalue items like technology.

• Consider whether the value has changed for any antiques or art collections • Don’t forget items in storage, in a safe or at the bank

• Review your cover regularly and if you’re unsure, talk things through with a professional.

OUT & ABOUT

SMARTER RENT

M

elinda – lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself. What were you hoping to achieve? Melinda asked Smarter Rent to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe-hold in London, but wanted to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live elsewhere.” The rental income allows Melinda to keep up her active lifestyle as she skis or sails (depending on the season) in Europe, but equally offers her a Pied-à-terre for visiting her family or local chums back in Blighty. She explains that instead of a traditional pension, she mostly invested in properties and she now relies on that rental income in her retirement. Why did you choose Smarter Rent? “My original agents were only able to offer traditional longer term lets (at £2,500 a month) which meant I couldn’t use the flat when I popped over. One agent did shorter lets, but they were proposing a 25% charge on the rental income with an additional range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!” These charges were for inventory and administrative costs which seemed

to be in addition to the fees she was already paying. “It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained. Melinda was also aware that some of the services offered by the agents were outsourced – “Smarter Rent have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed – ah yes, I smiled, the advantage of having a very small office. “You also bring in £4,500 a month in rental with lower fees. I know I am safe in your hands.” So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with Smarter Rent? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she has a chalet. “I can trust Smarter Rent to make the right decisions and the extra income you have achieved helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. I feel the security of knowing I have a bolt hole but can’t afford to just leave the asset standing.”

About the Owner Rebecca opened The Cheesy Grape in November of 2021. After working in hospitality her entire life she had always dreamt of owning her own place.

Originally from London, she moved to Marlow in 2018. Shortly after moving, Rebecca visited Henley and fell in love with the beautiful and vibrant little town. From that moment on, her heart was set on Henley being the place where she would turn her dream into a reality. Being a cheese and wine lover herself, Rebecca wanted to share her passion with others with an aim to sell only the best quality cheeses and wines. With a desire to create a venue where friends and family could have an informal yet social experience, Rebecca decided that sharing dishes, such as fondue and grazing boards, were the way forward. 4 2 J U LY 2 0 2 2

A little piece of Paris in Amersham

N

othing matches the intimacy of being tucked away with a quiet glass of wine as you watch the Chef himself make your selection off the menu as you relax. Originally a humble café, Bistro Twelve Twenty in the last 7 months has taken quite the journey in transforming into one of those sought-after, whispered about places you hear about typically in the streets of Paris. As soon as you step through the curtains shielding the front door, you’re welcomed into the cozy heart of the bistro, a selection of small plates titled savoury to sweet, an enviable and thoughtful winelist and some of the most unique cocktails seen in the village of Amersham.

4 4 J U LY 2 0 2 2

The ease of just popping in for a few creative yet classic dishes you’ll enjoy settling down and tucking into a variety of exciting flavours. The juicy pork belly at first unassuming but served with babaganoush and spherical pops of pineapple, exhilarating! That’s the magic of this place, you feel as if you are part of the show, intrigued and ready to explore the menu. Your food arrives as soon as it is made, one plate after the other. You even begin to order without looking at the menu. There might be a special on that evening, something a little different for you to dip into. Pair it with a wine and the adventure begins. Chef Mark Durman is a self-taught explorer of food. Originally, the Head Chef of Afterhours previously housed in the evenings of the café, he has expanded his vision to a lunch and dinner offering. Open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, It’s his attention to detail you’ll immediately notice in every moment experienced. Your glass never empty nor your palate bored. Bistro Twelve Twenty goes further and offers a new weekly ritual, Apertif hour. A welcomed addition to the Old High Street. It is the fantastic European concept of a good drink and snack after work that we’d wished we had thought of and only saved for holidays. Targeted at easing your tense shoulders after a week of work, it is a smaller more delicate offering on Fridays and Saturdays, 3pm to 6pm. Who doesn’t crave those days of a lunch dazedly slipping into a late afternoon drink whilst nibbling away on a divine cheeseboard? You can truly lose hours into the bliss of Bistro.

irst opening its doors in August 2021, you’ll often find diners visiting early in the week for a hearty breakfast or on the weekend enjoying cocktails and dinner late into the night. It has become a familiar name amongst the locals as the place that doesn’t rest. Once you walk through the door and begin descending through the space, you’ll be dazzled by the expanse of it. The sound of tinkering breakfast coffee cups followed up the smell of freshly toasted sourdough fills the air in the morning. Offered from Monday right through to Saturday you’ll find all the classics here, a full English sat next to a unique twist on the Eggs Benedict. A popular spot for those before traveling into London or having a ‘working’ breakfast. “Why not, let’s have mimosas!” they cry Head Chef Mikey Seferynski’s focus is keeping ingredients seasonal and delivering them in an interesting and unique style yet keeping it fun. Big flavours fill the lunchtime menu from midweek onwards. The Guinea Fowl Schnitzel, doused in layers of cured ham, melted brie and black truffle honey is a firm favourite or the ‘Julie Girl’ Spider Crab named after the day-boat that lands them just off the coast of Cornwall, a succulent white crab meat dressed in green chilli and lime.

How to get in on the trend for

SUMMER SUITING

From miniskirt suits to pastel tones, Prudence Wade picks out the best ways to wear tailoring this season. PALE BLUE CROC PU OVERSIZED BIKER JACKET, £25.50 (WAS £75); PALE BLUE CROC PU MID RISE STRAIGHT LEG TROUSERS, £36 (WERE £45), AVAILABLE FROM PRETTYLITTLETHING

F

ew things are as classic as a suit – and tailoring has come a long way. Once the reserve of menswear (with women wearing the odd skirt set), it slowly made itself into womenswear on the red carpet, and is now firmly part of our everyday fashion vocabulary. However, suits can still be a bit daunting – you might think they’re only for formal events, or feel a bit heavy for summer, for instance. But one look on Instagram will tell you summer suiting is having a massive moment right now. It’s also an easy way to express your personality, while looking chic and put-together with relatively little effort.

25 12 4 J JUULLY Y 22 002222

THIS IS HOW TO WEAR WARM WEATHER TAILORING THIS YEAR… IN PASTELS… Pastels for spring might not be ground-breaking, but there’s a reason it’s a classic look. Pale pinks, baby blues and spearmint greens are all perfect for standing out from the crowd in your tailoring. This year, the trend is overwhelmingly for slouchy, relaxed fits. These styles are incredibly versatile – wear with a crisp shirt for office days, a plain white T-shirt and trainers for the weekend, or you could even dress up with heels and silk vests, or corset-style tops underneath for nights out or summer weddings.

IN SKIRT SUITS… Channel your inner Cher from Clueless or Fran Drescher from The Nanny in this year’s retro take on suiting. While the last few seasons have been all about suits worn with matching shorts, skirts are back in a big way – and the shorter, the better. In May, Selena Gomez showed us how to wear the modern skirt suit while promoting the new series of her TV show Only Murders In The Building, donning a yellow mini paired with a matching jacket. The look feels fresh with a short-sleeved blazer and pearl accent buttons – and Gomez turned to the high street for her look, nabbing the outfit from Mango. Either go for pastel colours like Gomez, lean into the retro vibe with checked prints, or go allout in bright colours for a really kicky look.

IN INTERESTING MATERIALS… Linen blend suits are perfect for summer weather, but what if you want to give your tailoring a bit of a twist this year? We’re seeing a growing trend for choosing classic silhouettes in interesting materials – and it would seem like faux leather snakeskin is having a particular moment. Lil Nas X first showed us how to style a snakeskin suit on the red carpet in 2019, wearing a blue two-piece with a black mesh top underneath. It’s taken a while, but the trend has finally made

its way into womenswear – and for a more relaxed take on the look, choose brightly coloured snakeskin prints. Or opt for monochrome if you want a dressier vibe.

IN SEPARATES… Wearing a full suit can sometimes feel a bit formal, but if you separate the two pieces you’re basically doubling up on potential outfits in your wardrobe. Tailoring can add a bit of effortless cool to any look – so either try tapered trousers with a plain T-shirt and a light knit over the top, or wear the blazer on its own with jeans. It’s a chance to play around with the items you’ve already got in your closet, creating whole new looks to suit how you’re feeling on a given day. J U LY 2 0 2 2 5 3

Glitter & shimmer through the summer

Metallics are having a make-up moment, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

I

f you’re not afraid to shine bright, the glitter make-up trend is for you. A little sparkle goes a long way – and it’s an easy way to elevate your look for daytime, as well as after dark. “As we head into the summer season, metallics and glitters are going to be at the forefront,” says Charlotte Knight, founder and CEO of Ciate London, Lottie London and Skin Proud. It was a big trend on the spring/summer catwalks, “With Acne Studios, Etro and Tom Ford all showcasing stunning metallic or glitter looks across eyes, lips and body”, adds Knight. “These big statements, and what we’ve seen gracing our screens on the likes of Euphoria this year, will see us all trying to recreate the looks at home.”

HERE’S HOW TO GET IN ON THE TREND YOURSELF… 2 Y 22 002222 6 08 8 J JUULLY

Subtle shine For a delicate look, Knight recommends adding a pop of glitter to your eyeshadow using a pigmented palette. “You could also take the eyeshadow lightly across the lips to give an extra touch of magic,” she says.

“Knight recommends adding a pop of glitter to your eyeshadow”

lightly dust over your cheekbones and the apples of your cheeks for an amped strobed skin look.”

Precise application

Melanie Barrese, head make-up artist for Illamasqua, says sparkle is a great way to add some texture to your beauty look. If you’re not sure where to start, she says: “I love to add some glitter to the centre of the eye [near the tear duct], in a similar colour to the rest of the eye make-up. So even if the rest of the make-up is matte, the eyes get a beautiful sparkle and added dimension.” Barrese says applying a light colour to your cheekbones is another soft way of adding some glitter. “Choosing a shade similar to highlighter,

When working with glitter, Barrese recommends using a flat, small brush, ensuring you’ve shaken off any excess, and using patting motions to apply to the skin. She also advises applying foundation and undereye concealer as your last step, “So you can wipe away any dropped glitter, ensuring your application is clean”.

Choosing your colours “The shade is up to you, but if you’re really unsure, a colour a few shades lighter than your skin tone will give your eyes some sparkle and open up the face,” says Barrese.

Having fun with glitter “For something more playful, you can also place glitter in more non-conventional areas around the eye, such as above the crease of the eye, on the outer corner, and along the lower lash line,” Barrese says. “Pair it with a natural, glowy skin to achieve a youthful, modern and fun look.” Knight says: “Another really easy wearable look is by adding a touch of metallic to your natural freckles – to enhance your natural beauty, and give all those catwalk and Y2K vibes.”

Practicing Non-Judgement One thing we have all seen over the last few years is the destructive force of judgement. From Brexit to the vaccine debate, and racism to war, situations arise every day that trigger strong and often divisive opinions among us – our friends, our families and our neighbours. Kate Kirrane teklkls us more.

T

he reality is that no matter who we are or how nice we are, most of us go through our days judging our experiences, other people, and also ourselves. But at what point does judgement become unhelpful and even harmful? And what can we do to transcend what feels like a hardwired automatic reaction to everything and everyone we encounter? According to yogic philosophy, practicing nonjudgment, ie simply observing aspects of life without attaching our opinion, enables us to step back from these behaviours and reactions and see things as they actually are. Said Tibetan Buddhist nun and acclaimed author, Pema Chodron, the key is to learn to live beyond judgement and instead cultivate compassion for ourselves and others. “If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.” So How Can We Practice Non-Judgement? The simple practice of non-judgement is incredibly liberating and has the power to transform the way we see and experience the world. And the process of becoming self-aware enough to consider where we judge is the first step.

7 0 J U LY 2 0 2 2

“Once you’ve learned to spot it in yourself, letting go of judgement is really so very easy; when you feel it arise, simply take a breath, and you choose joy over judgement. Then, watch your world change!” Gertrud Keazor

With a VIP list of discerning customers, including Lord Alan Sugar and Duncan Bannatyne, Crown Pavilions is often described by those in the know as the best in the business. permission is not required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multifunctional space”, adds Luke Dejahang. The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home. The hottest design trends Pochette armchair by B&B Italia

Yves sofa by Porada

I

f we’ve learned anything in the past few years, it’s that our homes are places for selfexpression and experimentation as well as retreat and sanctuary, the modern interior both exciting and full of life as well as a place to relax and unwind in. The new launches at this year’s Salone del Mobile – Milan’s fashionable furniture fair – echoed these dual desires; colour hovered around the natural end of the spectrum occasionally interrupted with flashes of more vivacious pigments; forms were sculptural yet soft; and materials channelled the organic as well as exaggerating and playing with it. Chapins’ edit of the top trends is a show and tell of the materials, colours, shapes and functions that will come to define the modern home over the next year.

ORGANIC OBJECTS After taking solitude in nature for so long, we continue to seek to recreate it in our homes via organic shapes, the imperfect and hints at natural intervention. Nature and the implication of time are quietly introduced, pieces created to look like manufacture never happened – did they grow out in the wilderness? Shapes have an accidental feel like they have slowly evolved and perfection is something left behind long ago. Top Pick: Yves sofa by Porada A dainty take on a classic bean sofa, Yves by G. & O. Buratti for Porada has a charismatic a grownon-a-stalk-in-the-garden shape, a reminder of the power of the organic. Comprised only of calming curves, its matching pouf neatly nestles into the front of the crescent like an oversized seed.

INSIDE OUT The outdoors is increasingly becoming an extension of our walled-in living areas, spaces to be used routinely and habitually, so it was no surprise to see a bevy of renowned Italian brands stepping into the fresh air and launching incredibly chic all-weather collections. With these new pieces, design comes first and being able to withstand the rain is a quietly integrated feature that’s barely noticeable. Top Pick: The A’mare collection by Edra The A’mare collection by Jacopo Foggini which includes tables, chairs, armchairs, a bench and a sunbed, is designed around a love of the ocean, comprised from flexible polycarbonate slats which embody solidified slices of water. Their vivid turquoise colouring playfully catches and throws light, transporting the user onto a sparkling sea, design that is both utterly minimalist and an audacious statement. 7 8 J U LY 2 0 2 2

“B&B Italia’s Pochette by Piero Lissoni combines unfixed cushions and a lowslung shape with a creamy grey-ish nude leather”

for 2022 and beyond EARTH TONES

Leggera chair by Cassina

Physically digging into the immersed-in-nature trend, the neutral hues set to dominate this year are drawn from the ground, spanning pale shades of sand, soft mid-tone clays, and red-tinted terracotta. Prompting images of bare feet on beaches and hands plunged into the earth, these colours are about connection to the elements, warm neutrals that are livelier and more varied than a classic beige. Top Pick: Pochette armchair by B&B Italia B&B Italia’s Pochette by Piero Lissoni combines unfixed cushions and a low-slung shape with a creamy grey-ish nude leather which is wrapped around the tubular frame, a shade easier to live with and more laid back than white or ivory but with a similar crisp, chic impression. In-Between dining table by Lema

embraces neutral shades as well as a vibrant watery palette for its move into the outdoors. The renowned seat’s original slimline frame is replicated in garden-proof stainless steel, the colourful option a peppy turquoise-tinted green with optional upholstery in blue recycled polypropylene, the makings of a spirited summery classic.

SCULPTURAL BASES

SEA SHADES Summoning visions of the ocean disappearing into the horizon, Mediterranean mornings and treasurelike pieces of sea glass, this season’s statement hues are gloriously fresh and enlivening, radiating the promise of sunnier climes and (like us all) calling out for adventure. Hovering between hazy shades of blue-tinged sage and turquoise tones, these are introverted colours which harmonise easily with their surroundings, tranquil and inobtrusive while radiating vitality and joy. Top Pick: Leggera chair by Cassina Gio Ponti’s 1952-designed icon the Leggera

These days, tables are all about looking down. The contemporary table is leaning heavily on leg work, its supports pieces of art in their own right able to sit in the home as standalone sculptural objects. Adding an element of surprise and delight to the dining room, each artful base feels like a discovery, something earned and a small secret waiting to be uncovered. Top Pick: In-Between dining table by Lema In-Between by Ximi Li asks the diner to focus on the space between the base’s forms and consider instead the chunky segments of air formed by the irregular legs. Arranged in a staggered position, the flattened supports stand apart, almost meeting in the middle, the rounded marble top drawing them together and making the decorative piece whole. We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese launches – and more! – to our curated collection of designer furniture, lighting and accessories both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London over the coming months.

How to create an eco-friendly

BATHROOM

The average UK household uses approximately 330 litres of water a day, that’s a whopping 140 litres per person! And whilst the impact of increased water usage is easy to notice on our household bills, the impact on the environment is often less visible.

O

f all the CO2 emissions produced in the UK, 6% come purely from water usage. As we use more water, we use more energy to pump, heat and treat that water, in turn producing emissions which can be detrimental to the environment. So how can you reduce your water consumption and save money whilst also doing your bit to save the planet? We asked Ripples Senior Designer Laura Popek for her top tips. Taps and showers Many taps and showers are now supplied with ‘flow regulators’; a device which regulates the flow of water to a pre-set rate. Some regulators are designed to ensure a constant flow, taking into consideration any change in pressure which might occur.

Flush A very simple fix to reduce water usage is to change your single flush to a modern, dual flush plate. The dual flush plate allows you to use less water when you need to, which is not only better for the environment but can have a big impact on water bills, especially in metered homes. Bath If a bath is a must-have for you then consider choosing a slightly smaller bath which holds less water. Alternatively, you can choose a bath where the overflow has yet to be drilled. By positioning a lower overflow at a level you’re comfortable with, you can limit the amount of water your bath can hold. Products The home, bath and body products you choose can also have an impact on the environment. Try seeking out products which have eco-credentials, such as recycled/recyclable packaging, refill options and ethically sourced (preferably organic) ingredients. We think our KIND collection (itskind.co.uk) is a very wise place to start!

Summer at Cult Furniture

T

he Big Summer Sale has landed at Cult. Instead of the usual sale graphics, you might find floating around on sites this year, as you may have noticed, Cult has pulled out all the stops and is breaking new boundaries. To learn more about Cults Big Summer Sale, we sat down with Becka, our Creative photography & Styling Manager, to discuss further... Talk us through the initial concept and story behind the Summer Sale campaign? Instead of the usual graphic sale campaigns we see everywhere, we wanted to push new boundaries for Cult with our “Fashion + Floral” inspired Summer Sale campaign. We chose to shoot this in an artistic setting with a model to breathe some fun energy into the campaign and to connect with customers. As the leading Creative Photography & Styling Manager, tell us what makes this one different from the rest? Aside from shooting with a model for the first time (which was incredibly fun!) we produced our first social media campaign video, which allowed

the high energy on set to be conveyed to our social audience. Where did you source/ gain inspiration for the styling, theme & photoshoot? When you think of Spring / Summer what comes to mind? Flowers, meadows, even freshly cut grass is up there! Our marketing team briefed in ‘red’ to convey the feeling of a sale, so it stemmed from there (mind the pun). In terms of inspiration the likes of Pinterest, Instagram, various interior and fashion magazines were all very instrumental in building the art direction and final look. Lastly, tell us your highlights from the days you spent shooting and working to bring everything together? The shoot itself was really high energy with such a positive feeling. The real highlights were watching the silliness of our lovely model Terri forward rolling over sofas and singing into floor lamps turned into a strong campaign - we even had a furry visitor sneak into the studio to come and say hello. cultfurniture.com

DREAM DESKS T

he focal point to any home office space is a stylish desk that can keep up with all the day to day needs. Nick Atkin of Atkin and Thyme advises: “Plan ahead to decide how much space you would like to dedicate to your chosen desk. If you have limited dimensions, a slimmer console would be a great alternative. When choosing where to set up your desk, try and place it as close to natural light as possible, this will in turn create a healthier work environment and increase positivity. Opt for a desk that has plenty of storage so that you can hide away clutter at the end of the day, as this will help you to feel more organised and

2 79 08 JJUULL YY2 022022 2

productive.” Ideal for smaller spaces, the curvaceous design of the Mimi Capsule Console oozes elegance with its whitewash mango wood and brass cladded features. With three handy drawers, this table can also be used within the hallway to keep bills, keys and household essentials. Part of the latest collection by Atkin and Thyme, the El Capitan Console Desk shows off a Mid Century Modern aesthetic and offers functionality with its space saving design. The Toshi Console Desk provides style and versatility, whilst the Flute Marble Console Desk in Black offers texture and substance. If industrial is the intended aesthetic, the Logan Writing Desk is ideal, and would suit a variety of schemes whilst simultaneously offering plenty of space. With its old-fashioned charm and Mid Century looks, the Stanley Writing Desk would be a family favourite. atkinandthyme.co.uk
