Canterbury Cathedral
Enjoy a visit 1,400 years in the making!
With new family-friendly activities, a major exhibition, and ‘Kids go Free’ until 31 December 2023*, there’s never been a better time to discover Canterbury Cathedral – UNESCO World Heritage Site, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and resting place of saints and royalty. A masterpiece of stained glass, stone and art, the Cathedral is at the heart of English history, and is one of the UK’s most-visited historic sites. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it sits alongside the Giza Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, and Chichen-Itza as a must-visit location of outstanding universal value to humanity.
Whether seeking out dragons and grotesques, admiring the medieval stained-glass windows – including the oldest in Britain - marveling at carved tombs, or exploring the Cathedral’s stunning Cloisters and tranquil green spaces, there’s plenty to do. You might even be lucky enough to spot the peregrine falcons that make the Cathedral their home.
The major exhibition in the Cathedral’s Crypt - ‘Making History: Church, State and Conflict’ - allows visitors to explore up close, for the first time, a unique collection of artefacts that tell the complex, and often violent, story of Church-State relations. Amazing objects on display include the armour of infamous medieval warrior, The Black Prince, and a stone fragment from Becket’s Shrine, destroyed on the orders of Henry VIII.
“There is no lovelier place in the world than Canterbury” wrote Virginia Woolf, and the picturesque city - less than an hour from London –offers a feast of delights. From parks and riverside walks, to sightseeing, great shopping experiences, and a diverse choice of cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars, Canterbury offers the perfect city break. And if you’re planning to stay a night or two, why not indulge in a stay at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, a top-rated hotel within the Cathedral grounds.

Historical highlights
Thomas Becket’s Martyrdom
Canterbury Cathedral’s role as one of the world’s most important pilgrimage centres is inextricably linked to the murder of its most famous Archbishop, Thomas Becket, on 29 December 1170. When, after a long-lasting dispute, King Henry II is said to have exclaimed “Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?”, four knights set off for Canterbury and murdered Thomas in his own cathedral. A sword stroke was so violent that it sliced the crown off his skull and shattered the blade’s tip on the pavement.
Healing miracles were soon attributed to Thomas and he was made a saint by the Pope in 1173, just three years after his death.
Magna Carta
Thirteenth century Archbishop of Canterbury
Stephen Langton played an important role in the negotiations preceding Magna Carta – the charter of liberties sealed by King John in 1215. Only four copies of the 1215 Magna Carta survive to this day, including one held at the British Library which has been identified as the copy originally kept at Canterbury Cathedral.
The Black Prince
The eldest son of King Edward III, Edward of Woodstock – The Black Prince - was one of the most celebrated commanders during the Hundred Years’ War. The Black Prince died before he could become king, and Edward III and the whole court attended his funeral along with Edward of Woodstock’s son, the future King Richard II.
Royal weddings
In 1236, King Henry III married Eleanor of Provence in Canterbury, who was crowned in Westminster Abbey shortly after. Edward I also married his second wife, Margaret of France, in the Cathedral in 1299. Their wedding is depicted in the Chapter House stained glass.
The Battle of Jutland
HMS Canterbury was a 446-feet long C-class light cruiser, carrying a crew of 323. After playing a pivotal role in The Battle of Jutland - the greatest naval engagement of the First World War - she was sold for breaking up, but her spirit lives on through the ship’s bell that can still be seen at Canterbury Cathedral.
World War II
On 1 June 1942, Canterbury was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe, with the Cathedral a key target. Despite being hit by incendiary bombs, the Cathedral survived thanks to the bravery of the ‘fire watchers’, who rushed to the roof and put out the incendiaries before they could cause fire.
“Whether seeking out dragons and grotesques, admiring the medieval stainedglass windows –including the oldest in Britain - marveling at carved tombs, or exploring the Cathedral’s stunning Cloisters and tranquil green spaces, there’s plenty to do”

Following the success of the inaugural
tournament last year, Brocket Hall will stage one of the foremost events on the Ladies European Tour Access Series from September 7 to 9. The tournament boasts the largest prize fund on the Access Series this year. What’s more, tickets are completely free, just register online at roseladiesopen.co.uk.

“Auberge’s head chef, John Barber sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden”
The tournament will be preceded by a Celebrity ProAm on Wednesday, September 6, which will give everyone a chance to spot a few stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment as well as the pros themselves.
After following the action out on the course, spectators can indulge in a luscious lunch prepared by the Auberge’s head chef, John Barber, who sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden and local suppliers to create a seasonal, modern British cuisine.
In addition to watching golf, there will be the opportunity to try out the game of golf thanks to The Golf Foundation who will be on hand for everyone to have a go at putting and hitting some balls. The Melbourne Course is one of England’s most picturesque championship courses with
its stunning views over the property’s glorious stately home and lake which is straddled by the magnificent Paine Bridge and its acres of rolling 18th century parkland.
There is no doubt that the demanding layout will provide the players with a testy challenge thanks to host of water hazards (it crosses the River Lea on no less than four occasions!), hanging fairway lies and sloping greens that will force the players to think about each and every shot.
Its memorable finish in front of the Hall itself after a short ferry ride to the 18th green will no doubt add drama to the action right down to the very last hole!

Wish to avoid a ‘fence’ off with neighbours?
Here’s what you need to know.
With Summer here, many of us are happy to spend more time in our gardens enjoying the sunshine and perhaps, as you have more meals al fresco, wishing you had more privacy from your neighbours. If you’d like to increase the height of your garden fence to achieve more privacy, it is important to know your rights before making any changes. Phil Hind from B P Collins’ property dispute team explores what you can do without incurring next door’s wrath.
How high can a garden fence be?
If your back garden fence runs along a highway used by vehicles or a highway footpath, the fence cannot exceed one metre from the ground. In all other circumstances, the fence in your back garden can reach two metres in height above ground level. However, if you have a fence in your front garden, it cannot be any higher than one metre.
Can I put up an eight-foot (2.44 metre) fence?
Unless you have an existing fence that already exceeds two metres, you will not be permitted to make it taller without seeking planning permission. There is the option of building a trellis on top of your
fence, but if you are unsure of the maximum height permitted, your local authority will let you know. In most instances, it is unlikely that the fence and trellis will be permitted to exceed two metres, although some councils will accept a little higher if they regard it as a temporary arrangement. It’s important to note that in those circumstances, it can only be erected for a certain amount of time every year.
How can I get around fence height restrictions?
You will have to apply for planning permission from your local council, if you wish to have a fence that is higher than two metres. Otherwise, if you decide to build a fence without permission, you could be issued with an enforcement notice up to four years after the fence was erected, demanding that you take down the fence immediately and then all the money you had spent on the new fence would be wasted.
It is also important to note that your fence upgrade may require other approvals in addition to just regular planning permission, with some cases also requiring building regulations. Other approvals will be required if you live in a listed building or, if you’re a tenant or leaseholder, you will also need to obtain permission from the homeowner or landowner.

WESTMINSTER SECURITY How to hire a Bodyguard
Hiring a bodyguard can be a daunting task, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the process. However, it is easier than you might think, though caution is necessary to avoid rogue companies. Westminster Security provides us with expert guidance on hiring bodyguards:
The first step is to determine your specific needs and personal requirements. There are thousands of close protection companies in the UK, so obtaining quotes from various relevant companies is essential. While recommendations from trusted sources can be helpful, conducting your own research and due diligence is vital.
A reputable close protection company will expect you to ask many questions, they too will ask many probing questions to understand your requirements, concerns, threat, and risk profile. They will also carry out basic due diligence on you to assess your suitability as a client.
To hire a bodyguard, start by researching online. Use relevant search terms and focus on the top three organic results after the paid adverts, as they are likely the most relevant and reputable. Be wary of fancy websites with luxury stock images and outlandish claims and make a shortlist of companies that appear professional.
Dig deeper into the shortlisted companies by checking their online reviews and social media profiles. Look out for fake reviews and scrutinise the claims made on their websites. Verify the background and experience of company directors on LinkedIn and cross-reference this with Companies House records.
Once you have narrowed down your list, contact the remaining companies to gauge their professionalism and responsiveness. During the

conversation, ask pertinent questions, such as the background and experience of their staff, whether they are accredited and insured, their process for hiring a bodyguard, contract terms, security screening and vetting of bodyguards, costs, additional fees, and notice required for deployment.
Following this comprehensive procedure will increase the likelihood of hiring a reliable, professional bodyguard from a competent, accountable organisation, backed by relevant licenses, and insurance to provide personal protection services.
Westminster Security are headquartered in central London and provide private security and investigation services throughout the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Key things to consider when selling your house
Obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
Before you put your property on the market, in the majority of cases, you must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This certificate rates your property’s energy efficiency on a scale from A to G, with A being the most efficient. A certificate is valid for 10 years and you can check if yours is still valid via the EPC register. If you need a new EPC you can either ask your estate agent to arrange an EPC or arrange one directly with a provider. It is a legal requirement to have a valid EPC when selling a property and failing to provide one can lead to delays in the selling process.
Choose an estate agent
Selling a house can be an overwhelming process, requiring careful planning and consideration to ensure a smooth and legally compliant transaction.
Jane Hannaway, Partner and Head of Residential Property at Blaser Mills Law, outlines the key things to consider when selling your house, to help you navigate through the process successfully.
Prepare your property for viewings
First impressions matter when selling your house. Make sure your property is well-maintained, tidy, and presentable for viewings. Consider de-cluttering and staging your home to showcase its best features. Being flexible with viewing arrangements to accommodate potential buyers’ schedules can increase the likelihood of attracting serious buyers.
It is often useful to get at least two or three estate agents to value your home. Pricing your property appropriately is crucial to attract potential buyers and increases the chances of a successful sale. Personal recommendations are often valuable as to which estate agents to invite to potentially sell your home. Ask questions as to market trends and recent sales in your area - you are about to ask them to help you with the sale of a valuable asset, so it is important to ensure that you feel confident and comfortable with the agency that you instruct.
Prepare the necessary documentation
Gathering all relevant documents related to your property, including title deeds, planning permission documents, building regulations certificates, service records and guarantees for any work done. Having these documents readily available will assist with completing the paperwork for the conveyancing process.
Appoint a solicitor as early as possible
Navigating the legal aspects of selling a property can feel daunting. We would highly recommend engaging a property solicitor as soon as possible once you have decided to market the property. You will then have time to complete the necessary paperwork so that your solicitor can ensure that they then have everything they need to prepare and issue the contract documentation as soon as you do accept an offer. Issuing a comprehensive contract pack in the first instance often leads to fewer enquiries and a faster transaction overall.
How Blaser Mills Law can help
At Blaser Mills Law we have wide experience in all aspects of residential property work. We understand the importance of working proactively to complete transactions as quickly as possible, taking away the stress from what is supposed to be an exciting time in your life. We pride ourselves on our service levels and the communication that we have with our clients, and agents, so that the sale can be as smooth as possible.

Why Finding The Right Practitioner Is Key When Hitting The Treatment Couch
As someone who has always embraced holistic therapies, the reality is that, just like anything in life, not all things work for all people. For me, it was acupuncture. Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness tells us more.
My first experience of this ancient modality was some 20 years ago when I was struggling with knee pain. I had heard it was particularly beneficial for relieving pain and I was desperate to feel better so, despite a lifelong fear of needles, I found a local practitioner and booked a session.
I remember hobbling up the stairs to a small clinic space located in the practitioner’s home in Notting Hill, London. She seemed accomplished enough, with a confident manner and certificates all over her walls. As I lay on her treatment couch, all was going well until she inserted a needle into a particularly sensitive area of my foot. I felt an electric shock rip through my entire body and I metaphorically hit the roof. After this first treatment, I never went back.
When Sam Briones of The Shinden Clinic invited me to experience a session of Japanese Integrated Medicine at her clinic space in Marlow, I had no idea until I got there that it included acupuncture. I was duly nervous. Actually, this unique treatment works particularly well for people with pain or injury, drawing on 4 different modalities including
acupuncture, visceral massage, physiological alignment and cranio-sacral therapy, aimed collectively to induce a deeper level of integrated, whole body correction for more effective, long-lasting results.
As I lay on the couch, I explained my first experience of acupuncture and with her soft and reassuring voice, Sam convinced me to have another go. I agreed and within minutes, she had needles inserted into different areas of my body –my head, legs, arms and feet. I felt completely fine and at ease. I was amazed!!!
The whole session lasted for 90 minutes and I left feeling relaxed in body and mind.
My experience with Sam highlighted to me that it’s not necessarily the treatment that isn’t working for you but the practitioner administering it. It reminded me of the importance of choosing someone who comes recommended and who sets you at ease.
When we are ill or in pain, we are naturally vulnerable. So, it’s important to work with a practitioner who is supportive and highly experienced just as Sam was, in order to achieve best results.

SPF COCKTAILING: Why you should steer clear of the buzzy TikTok trend
more prone to premature ageing.”
Dr Paris Acharya, leading aesthetic doctor and face surgeon agrees, saying: “When you mix an SPF with your other make-up products, such as foundation or concealer, you are changing the overall properties of the SPF and diluting the strength of the product.
“This will therefore reduce the protection that you will be getting from the SPF. There may also be certain products within your make-up products that may interfere with the way that your SPF is meant to work.”
However, Perry understands why people might be looking for ways to make their SPF look better.
“Sunscreens are notoriously cosmetically unattractive purely in part to the ingredients. The reason for this is that’s how they prevent the sun’s rays penetrating into the skin. The suncream companies already try to dilute this down as much as possible in order to make it cosmetically acceptable, however I appreciate in some instances this does not quite go far enough.”
It’s all about mixing your favourite SPF with another product – such as concealer or highlighter – and applying that as a ‘cocktail’ onto skin.
In theory, the idea sounds good – the aim is to reduce the white cast some SPFs leave, and mean less steps slathering products onto your skin in the morning – but dermatologists and skin experts have started pointing out the potential dangers of this new trend.
“SPF cocktailing is a recipe for disaster in so many ways,” says Dr Ross Perry, medical director of Cosmedics skin clinics.
“By mixing SPF with products such as concealer or highlighter you are leaving the skin entirely exposed to the dangerous UV rays, which will very likely burn the skin and potentially lead to skin cancer down the line, not to mention leaving you
So for Perry, it is a “balance between having someone wearing something that will protect your skin, versus not wearing it”. He adds: “I don’t advocate mixing the ingredients together, as it may reduce efficacy. I do believe though that if this is the only way people will wear sunscreen, then some sunblock is absolutely better than no sunblock.”
But make no mistake: the best option is wearing SPF that hasn’t been mixed with any other products. “It only takes one sunburn in a lifetime to lead to skin cancer. [Skipping sunscreen] isn’t something you should be doing at all, and in no way should be encouraged,” says Perry.
If you do want to reduce the white cast of sunscreen, Perry’s advice is to “apply a good moisturising cream prior to using a sunscreen –this will help the sunscreen absorb into the skin and reduce the tint”.
While Perry doesn’t recommend mixing your
products together, he does suggest that layering is fine: “If you apply them all separately and give them a chance to absorb first.”
Acharya has some other recommendations for best practice when it comes to sunscreen.
“My ultimate top tip is to always use a broad spectrum SPF. Broad spectrum protects you from both UVA and UVB rays which helps the skin to stay youthful and will help to reduce premature ageing and sunspots,” she advises.
“Another important tip for using an SPF is to always apply it to the face and neck to ensure full coverage and protection of all exposed areas. The skin on your face and neck is some of the first to age on your body so it’s vital that we care for these
areas properly.”
Acharya recommends an SPF30 or above for your face, and adds: “It is always recommended to reapply your SPF throughout the day at least twice to maintain maximum protection.”

CHAPLINS TURNS 30
This year luxury furniture retailer Chaplins is celebrating its pearlescent anniversary with a proud over-the-shoulder peek at its past.
James helped to establish a new era of interior design that reached the leafier suburbs of the UK and introduced a wave of avant-garde interiors. All while cultivating multiple central London venues with which to receive his star-studded clientele.
FROM FATHER TO SON
In 2005, this ideology was imbued upon Simon Chaplin as he took the helm from his father and prepared to pioneer a new era of expansion whilst maintaining the core values that his father had instilled in him and the entire companydedication to the highest level of service.
Key to this was the opening of the Chaplins Trade department, operating out of Chelsea Harbour, lifting the load from interior designers and architects with the ambition to tackle huge,
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Established in 1993 by James Chaplin, the original Chaplins furniture showroom was both a sophisticated spectacle and a surprise to all who visited. James introduced new brands to the UK market, discovering designers and showcasing pieces that would soon become classics. Not constrained only to London,
“The flagship Chaplins store becomes a onestop-shop housing the biggest names in European design”
multi-brand projects. With a team of experts at their side handling hundreds of suppliers, their renders became a reality, and their skills were spent on the passion of the project instead of being buried in bureaucracy.
With the explosion of online retail, it was clear that clients’ shopping journeys were beginning in their homes rather than Chaplins’. It was time to offer a website as unique, inspiring, and insightful as their in-store experience would be. Chaplins took its interior specialists’ advice to an online journal to offer trends and tips, filled an online catalogue with the best design has to offer, and extended customer care through the screen. Simon’s vision of creating an omnichannel business had been realised, with every touchpoint connecting Chaplins’ clients with an expert.
UNDER ONE ROOF
The flagship Chaplins store becomes a one-stopshop housing the biggest names in European design, a dedicated trade department, and in-house interior planning services. The 25,000
sq ft emporium has allowed Chaplins’ space to continue growing and thriving at a time when the physical presence of luxury retailers is becoming increasingly scarce. It remains, proudly, one of the few spaces of its size, hosting a compendium of design.
For Chaplins, home is at the heart of all they do, and their Hatch End headquarters is home not only to designer showpieces but to a family. It isn’t solely the Chaplins family line that has generated generations of interior specialists though, Simon is just one of the many second-generation Chaplins team members merged under one roof.
“Good design creates relationships — between people, perspectives and place. But when done well, it can also tell a story about what we value or who we’d like to become. In a world with increasingly finite resources, we think there’s something to be said for buying once and buying well. For investing in things that bring you delight. And that can be passed on and loved by future generations.” -
Simon ChaplinIn celebration of Chaplins’ 30th anniversary, a number of exclusive designs from their longstanding partners including Ligne Roset and B&B Italia will be displayed throughout the year. chaplins.co.uk

THE ORIGIN WAY: Elevate Your Home with an Indoor Swimming Pool
Transforming your home into a haven of relaxation, well-being, and fun is a dream for many homeowners. A bespoke indoor swimming pool and pool house offer the perfect solution, bringing luxury and convenience right to your doorstep. With Origin, you can create a private oasis that allows you to enjoy the benefits of swimming yearround, regardless of the weather. But a pool from Origin can not only enhance your property value; it also elevates your entire home life.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL - THE KEY TO SUCCESS
Designing a successful indoor swimming pool and pool house is a unique endeavour that demands attention to detail and precise planning. It goes beyond a standard building project and requires specialised knowledge in three key areas: the pool chamber, building structure, and pool building environment management (including heating, dehumidification, and ventilation).
“Designing a successful indoor swimming pool and pool house is a unique endeavour that demands attention to detail and precise planning”
At Origin, we excel in these domains, ensuring all specialisms are integrated seamlessly from the outset. This approach eliminates potential disruptions and complexities, and cost overruns that may arise after construction.
THE ART OF SWIMMING AND WELL-BEING
Swimming remains one of the nation’s favourite activities, and for good reason. Its physical and mental health benefits are remarkable, as evidenced by a recent SwimEngland study that revealed regular swimmers feel an average of 12 years younger. Swimming provides low-impact exercise, gentle on the joints and accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Beyond the physical advantages, swimming promotes relaxation and mental well-being. The sensation of water overyour body massages away stress, boosts brain health, and releases endorphins, resulting in an overall uplifted mood.
At Origin, we believe that owning a pool is an opportunity to create a space of total relaxation and well-being. By adding elements like a spa, sauna, steam room, or yoga area, your swimming pool and pool house can be transformed into a centre of tranquility and rejuvenation. Saunas and steam rooms stimulate blood flow, aiding in the release of toxins and revitalising the body. These spaces also provide stress relief by relaxing muscles, reducing tension, and improving circulation, turning your pool house into a serene escape.
