n the face of it, Henry VIII and Marilyn Monroe don’t have much in common. They did however, both enjoy the hospitality of Notley Abbey, the one-time monastic seat near Oxford and erstwhile home of Hollywood lovebirds Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Marilyn and her fellow A-listers, invited by the Oliviers, often came here to party (if walls could talk…). The abbey today is a one-of-a-kind country retreat with feature-film looks and an impossibly romantic backstory. The H Spa unfolds a world of indulgence, offering an array of therapeutic treatments designed to soothe the mind, body, and soul. Mount Pleasant Hotel, the stunning property was acquired just over 5 years ago by a young couple, Jonty & Bev and although the hotel has kept its traditional charm, an injection of modernisation has taken place to appeal to a wider audience. For the guest who seeks ‘an oasis of calm in an ever-changing world’ (as was the hotel tagline found in a 70’s brochure) alongside some more modern luxuries such as high speed broad band & smart tv’s are well catered for. Jonty & Bev – parents to 3 children under 4 - realised the importance of a good night’s sleep so invested heavily in their beds and linen to add that extra bit of luxury to a stay. The grandeur of Brocket Hall coupled with traditional butler service, surrounded by the Capability Brown inspired parkland, elegant interiors and sweeping imperial staircase provide the most beautiful and romantic backdrop for your wedding day.

is beautiful. From the intimate Abbot’s Hall with its ancient beamed ceiling, to the spectacular Monks’ Refectory with its intricate stone carvings illuminated by statement chandeliers, there are multiple options for ceremonies and receptions. And in the warmth of the summer sun, there’s nothing quite like saying “I do” in a wisteria-clad walled garden (with its own licensed nook for your registrar, no less). Al fresco cooking is also par for the course here, with a state-of-the-art OFYR fire pit the centrepiece of a courtyard festooned with lights as darkness falls. With Harper’s ‘our house is your house’ philosophy, Notley Abbey is entirely and exclusively yours for the day (and night). It’s the kind of place you’ll feel instantly at home, a place you can call your own for the duration of your celebrations, with a collection of bedrooms for your nearest and dearest, too (all outshone by the Notley Suite, with its four-poster bed, circular bath, and double aspect views of the abbey’s grounds) With such illustrious past guests, parties here have quite an act to follow. Fortunately, yours is in the best of hands.

HOMECOMING FOR RANA International artist Rana Begum presents ‘Ordered Form’ at St Albans Museum + Gallery

rom Dubai to Sweden and London to New York, Rana Begum’s work has been viewed by millions across the globe. She now returns to her former home of St Albans in Hertfordshire to present brand new works at her solo exhibition, Ordered Form. Curated by UH Arts + Culture and played out in the underground Weston Gallery of St Albans Museum + Gallery, the exhibition focuses on Begum’s geometric work to create a remarkable spatial and visual experience. Presenting sculptures, paintings and screenprints, newly created relief works and a panel painting installation, the exhibition poignantly brings the acclaimed artist’s work to her former home city and celebrates the success of an alumna of the University. Now living and working in London, Rana Begum grew up in St Albans and went to school at St Albans Girls School. As a young artist she studied her foundation course at University of Hertfordshire, which she has said had a pivotal impact on her in ‘opening up’ ideas and disciplines. Rana Begum, says: “Solo exhibitions are always exciting but this one has significant meaning as, after many years of long-haul destinations, my family and friends from my home city where I grew up, can now come and see my work.” From January, Begum will take over the stunning Assembly Room with an awe-inspiring, vast sitespecific installation No. 670 Mesh. Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Heritage and Culture Manager at St Albans City and District Council and Head of St Albans Museums, says: “Bringing internationally renowned artist and former resident, Rana Begum, to St Albans Museum + Gallery for this prestigious exhibition is huge news for St Albans and further cements our partnership with UH Arts + Culture which has brought elevated and standout exhibitions such as Henry Moore: Drawing in the Dark and Barbara Hepworth: Artist in Society 1948-53 to St Albans. ith festive menus and events that embrace the natural beauty of The Brocket Hall estate, it’s a magical time to visit
Auberge du Lac. The restaurant, housed in a former hunting lodge on the grounds of the picturesque estate proudly re-opened earlier this year under the guidance of new Head Chef, John Barber. Since then, this young, culinary talent has been delivering a more relaxed style of dining at the beautiful lakeside location. Working closely with kitchen gardener, Lucy Hawkins, John is focused on sustainability and seasonality to enhance his modern British style of cuisine. In a little over a year, Lucy has transformed a one-acre site - using the no-dig method - into a fertile garden which is supplying Auberge with fresh produce and supporting local biodiversity. 38 DECEMBER 2023

SHARING GOOD WILL OVER THE
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS As your friends and family gather over the festive season, it might be a good time to talk about what you’d like to include in your will. This may seem a bit out of the ordinary, but hear us out…
B
etween putting up the tree, shopping and tucking into another mince pie, it might be crazy to think about adding another thing to your ever expanding ‘to do’ list in December. However, with family and friends getting together to spend quality time with you, this could be the perfect time to discuss your plans with them. You may think this could dampen festive spirits, and you’d rather listen to ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ for the umpteenth time, but writing a will could in fact, be one of the greatest gifts you’ll ever give to your loved ones. You have more time than you think over the holidays. If you want to relax on the sofa and binge watch your favourite show, you absolutely deserve to. But if you feel like being productive in your downtime and ticking an admin box along the way you could give some thought to what you’d like to include in your will and discuss with your family, so you’re ready to meet with your solicitor in January. Writing a will ensures that you’re looking after your loved ones - from gifting specific items, to providing for your partner whilst ringfencing a future inheritance for your children. It’s always heartwarming to see the faces of those opening a Christmas present from you, but sorting your will now will be a gift that lasts for a very long time.
40 DECEMBER 2023
With family structures becoming increasingly complex, if you die without making a will, the intestacy rules will apply, which may not be to your liking, so it’s worth investing in a will now to ensure peace of mind for you and your loved ones in the future. Although family and friends will be grieving when the times comes, at least they will be safe in the knowledge that your wishes are being carried out - from the type of funeral you want, to how your estate will be divided amongst your beneficiaries – which also helps to reduce the chance of family rifts occurring. Whilst it may feel difficult to have these discussions, you will feel relieved knowing that you have made the right provisions for your family and friends. You can then get back to celebrating Christmas with everyone, safe in the knowledge you’re totally prepared for the future. B P Collins’ wills, trusts and probate team will provide you with bespoke advice to meet your requirements both now and in the years to come. It will help you to write a will ensuring there are no mistakes and strict witnessing rules are followed correctly – otherwise the document may become unenforceable. Why is Equafleece the leading brand for dogwear?

THE DETAILS Prices range from £23 for a Chihuahua to £49 for the largest sizes with free P&P within the UK. You can buy online equafleece.co.uk or ring 01822 820550 for a brochure or to place an order, or at one of the shows they attend each year.

s it that it really is rainproof, warm and machine washable, or that the same rainproof garment is also brilliant at drying off a soggy dog? Or that the garments are super comfortable for dogs to wear. Or is it that they are British made and the fabric is 100% recycled materials? Whatever it is, Equafleece garments have become the ‘must have’ for people who want to keep their dogs clean, warm and dry, saving their car and home from the inevitable never ending stream of mud. Designed 23 years ago on the West edge of Dartmoor, where the annual rainfall can reach 90 inches, the first Equafleece Dog Jumper was born using Polartec® 200 fleece. Still family owned, British made and still using Polartec® fleece, the range of styles and sizes has expanded considerably in 14 gorgeous colours. The Dog Jumper has 66 different sizes. Equafleece say they can outfit pretty much every shape and size of dog from Chihuahua to Great Dane, Italian Greyhound to British Bulldog. Many of their designs are breed specific, for instance there is a huge range of sizes specifically for Dachshunds, and also for Pugs and Italian Greyhounds.
Equafleece has become the recognised brand for canine outdoor wear that does what it says on the packet. Its website is easy to navigate with a great Photo Gallery. The Dog Jumper, Dog Suit and Dog Tankie are stretchy for easy putting on and taking off with no need for buckles and straps. There are some great How-to-Fit Videos showing how to put on and take off their garments and how to measure your dog. For a more conventional style, the Dog Coat and Polo Neck Coat both have an adjustable belly strap and are still preferred by dogs who object to stiff, rigid fabric.

ith Christmas just around the corner, the festivities are in full swing. The decorations will soon be up and present shopping complete, but do not neglect your personal and property security during this busy period. Organised and opportunist thieves take full advantage of the festive shopping frenzy, with you and your house being top of their list! Christmas sees a peak in home and business burglaries with the long winter nights, particularly in more affluent areas. With the ever-increasing crime rates and vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, homeowners must take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security. One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political, and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary and robbery be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax3448 DDEECC EE MM B EBRE 2R0 2230 2 3
deductible business expense. In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors, gates, and windows. Keep presents and your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends, such as the use of social media by criminals to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect your home and assets, you can help ensure the safety and security of your family and possessions, gaining peace of mind which comes with good security awareness and measures. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. Fast Track Conveyancing Service We understand that selling a property can be stressful, there can be many obstacles that can arise throughout the conveyancing process, including the worry that your sale could fall through. The expert Residential Property lawyers at Blaser Mills Law are here to provide a proactive and straightforward approach to the conveyancing process. With our clients in mind, we have developed a Fast Track Conveyancing Service to maximise our clients’ chances of a successful sale, by starting the conveyancing process as soon as they put their property on the market.
What is the Fast Track Conveyancing Service?
Many sellers make the mistake of instructing a solicitor after they have accepted an offer on their property. This can often slow the conveyancing process down increasing the chances of someone in the chain changing their mind, causing the chain to collapse. Instead, our Fast Track Conveyancing Service is available to clients as soon as they put their property on the market. By instructing us before you have a buyer in place, you can maximise the chances of a successful sale by speeding up the process and allowing for issues to be ironed out at the outset before they turn into potential problems and delays.
Our Fast Track Conveyancing Service enables us to trim weeks off the conveyancing process. Our experienced lawyers help you complete the Property Information Forms by making sure all the necessary supporting documents, like certificates and guarantees, are in order.
Ultimately, getting started on the conveyancing process as soon as your property is on the market, gives plenty of time to prepare and make sure that the initial documentation is comprehensive and readily available. This allows us to issue contracts promptly when a Memorandum of Sale is received from your estate agent confirming that a buyer has been secured. It will also reduce the amount of enquiries being raised by the buyer which will, in the long run, save you time and money.
What are the costs?
No additional costs are paid for this service should you decide not to sell or to sell at a later date.

The importance of SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? 56 DECEMBER 2023
• What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

Top Nutritional Tips for the Festive Season I Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness tells us more.
f you’ve been looking to eat more healthily to feel better, boost skin or maintain a steady weight, Christmas can be a challenge. As we prepare for the festive season, we asked our Nutritional Therapists at Seed to share their top tips to help you stay on track. Caroline Barton, Nutritional Therapist in Beaconsfield says, “Firstly, eat a good nutritious breakfast. It sets your metabolism up well for the day ahead and you are much more likely to make good food choices. Keep a good meal routine. Don’t be tempted to skip meals so you get hungry. Again, this helps you make good food choices as the day goes on. “Eat your veggies first so you fill up on the good stuff. And go for a walk after you’ve had a larger meal as this helps to bet your blood sugar back in balance and you’ll feel the benefit. “Alcohol is always tricky at Christmas. Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks and sparkling water. And stay hydrated. Even 1-2% dehydration affects mood, anxiety and sleep so it’s really important to stay on top of that.” And Michelle Smith, Nutritional Therapist in Marlow, says, “Christmas is a time of tempting snacks and treats. It can help to balance your blood sugar if you regularly include protein or fibre; choose nuts instead of crisps and serving nuts that need to be cracked from their shells not only slows down our grazing but are good oldfashioned Christmas fun!
76 DECEMBER 2023
“When at a restaurant it helps to look at the menu and decide what to eat ahead of time. It’s easier to make healthier choices before a predinner drink! “Take a leaf out of the French book and start a large meal with a bitter leaf salad - think rocket, watercress and crispy purple lettuce. These trigger the release of digestive enzymes and prepare your gut to receive the richer / heavier food we tend to eat over the festive season. “If you do eat late, try to delay the time of your breakfast the next day (although as Caroline mentioned, absolutely don’t skip it!). This will give your body more time to rest and digest the previous meal. Most importantly, enjoy yourself !! Sharing food with family and friends is a part of the joy of Christmas.”
Both Caroline and Michelle offer 1:1 nutritional consultations in person and online.

Effortless ways to add a touch of luxury to your bathroom Advice from a Ripples bathroom design specialist.
C
reating this sort of haven can be easy to accomplish without having to do too much work. However, the Ripples team understands that if this is your first time renovating your space, the process can sometimes be intimidating. So, if you’re thinking about redesigning your bathroom, our Senior Designer Alfie from Ripples Beaconsfield has a few pointers to keep in mind when making those crucial design decisions. “Defining luxury can be subjective. However, from a designer’s point of view, if I were to create a room that subtly displays elements of luxury, then I would focus on specific areas.” Lighting Feature lighting would be my first go-to. This could be simple underlighting or recess lighting up to pendant lights. Choosing great lighting gives a simple bathroom a much more luxurious feel, especially if you can opt for stunning wall lights, or multiple layers of light which can add additional intrigue.
Creating beautiful bathrooms is something that Ripples prides itself on and excitingly for Beaconsfield, their Ripples showroom is no exception”

Brassware Special finish brassware really can give an exceptional touch. This style of brassware is generally more expensive than standard chrome, however, if you can find options which are within your budget, these items will elevate a bathroom. I would always encourage you to speak to a designer about special finish brassware as it’s important to go for higher quality as it’s handled every day, and you’ll quickly tell if it’s not up to scratch.
Tiles A standout tile will always elevate a bathroom. Whether it’s the pattern, shape, or material, choosing a tile that compliments the room will add a touch of luxury. Simplicity can often work best when it comes to using tiles to provide a luxury feel. I would suggest choosing one style of tile and using it only in essential areas, for example, behind the basin and within the shower area, really works well. Heating Underfloor heating would be my big go-to. Providing an extra level of warmth to a bathroom can give a touch of comfort to the room. Even if it’s limited to the shower area, it’s a real indulgence for the feet. There are many ways you can subtly add luxury to your bathroom. Strategic and calming lighting

will set the overall tone of your room, whereas special finish brassware will add stand-out features whilst being incredibly long-lasting. Tiles will draw attention to specific areas of the room and can allow you to show off your personality in small bursts and underfloor heating could be the cherry on top of a beautifully designed room. . Reasons the sofa is the most important
T
hink of one thing, anything, in an archetypal living room... Yes, we’re picturing a sofa too. Some pieces of furniture hold within them the power to transform. The sofa is one of these magical, room-changing design objects. It’s not just because they take up the most space or the alluring way they look, but how they make us feel and behave. The sofa epitomises tranquillity and switching-off. It’s committed to comfort, restfulness and unwinding - a physical declaration of me time, our time, down time, and nap time. The presence of a sofa brings the remainder of the living area together. The sofa needs an armchair or two. Now they need a rug. Next is a coffee table. What about a floor lamp? The sofa comes first; it pulls items around it into a group, serving as an anchor for the entire room, acting as the sun around which everything else revolves and draws energy from. Take a seat as we explore the sometimes surprising reasons that sofas are so uniquely impactful within the home, and the multifaceted roles the modern sofa plays. We’ll delve into the emotion tucked into the cushions and upholstery,
and discover how these seemingly simple pieces of furniture can shape our daily routines, host our most intimate conversations, and serve as supportive witnesses to our unfolding lives.
1 – SOFAS ADD STYLE AND CHARACTER As the largest furniture piece in a living room – an upholstered elephant in the room – the sofa automatically draws the eye. It contributes hugely to the aesthetic and feel, and can set the tone for the area’s overall style. The colour, upholstery and decorative choices of the modern sofa can be the defining elements that breathe life into a space – contemporary, colourful designs exuding modernity and energy, while classic forms in neutral palettes radiate timeless elegance and sophistication. Design and shape are just as important as the upholstery, with curves, angles, legs, arms and backs all narrating the style and story of the piece. These structural foundations can convey a sense of formality or familiarity, telling you whether to curl up and get cosy or sit upright for an official tete-a-tete, and turn the sofa into a beautiful sculptural object as well as a practical piece of seating. Pay attention to details like the legs, trim, and stitching, as these small-yet-significant touches often contribute to a high-quality, luxury feel, serving as a testament to the craft skills that went

piece of furniture into creating the piece, as well as enhancing the design’s overall appearance to give the seat a distinctive and luxurious edge. Sofas invite a finishing flourish for that extra flair. A contemporary sofa doesn’t feel complete without a selection of decorative cushions or a cosy throw positioned to be close at hand. Be they in colours, patterns or textures complementary to the body of the sofa and/or the room as a whole, or in contrasting styles, these little extras not only bring visual interest but also a personal touch to the piece making your sofa stylish, characterful and truly one-of-a-kind.
2 – SOFAS SHAPE THE ROOM’S LAYOUT As the main focal point in a room, a sofa’s placement significantly influences the space’s overall layout and dictates where people naturally gather. Whether placed against a wall or floating in the centre, a sofa’s positioning directs where people walk through the room as well as defining how light and air flow. The sofa is also vital to floor plans, its large size enabling it to divide rooms and create internal zones for different activities including living, dining, cooking or working. Other living furniture bows to the sofa, arranged in accordance to where it first settles. Accompanying pieces, such as coffee tables, side tables and lighting, follow and complement the sofa’s placement, building on it to create a balanced, functional space. The sofa’s orientation guides sitters’ attention to various views such as guests on the other side of the room, spots of natural light, or focal points like fireplaces, artwork, or Netflix’s latest must-watch. It’s not just about where you sit or what you’re sitting on; it’s about the world the sofa opens up for you to explore without even standing up. Now, the big question – should the sofa be against the wall or free- floating within the room? It all depends on the size of the area, and what you’re trying to achieve. A flush-to-the-wall set up can create an intimate, protected feel, while a floating seat helps to define open space and fosters a sense of fluidity.
it. It should be somewhere to slump, curl up and get cosy. It should support the back and arms. It should offer sleeping opportunities. Storage should be nearby, perhaps integrated? It should be snuggly. It should be cooling. It should create personal space. It should bring people together. The list goes on and on and on. The result? The modern sofa is the epitome of versatility, with modular designs becoming increasingly popular for their customisable aspects, so each sofa can be rearranged and configured to suit the space it’s in and the function needed from it. These designs can spread through rooms and around corners to create expansive, sociable seating areas as well as form compact loveseats and single person chairs. Interchangeable modules can be added such as: hard surfaces and storage, footstools, and different shaped arms or backs to meet multiple ever-changing needs. The style of the sofa can now also be edited, with pieces often available in a huge library of different colours, textures, materials and patterns to suit a wide range of interiors, and with smaller elements such as legs and cushions easily swappable for alternates. The modern sofa has become an expression of individuality, the same base design adaptable to create options spanning a high- backed sleek leather and chrome L shape to a low-slung floral and timber two-seater, offering limitless possibilities for tailoring its style and coordinating its look with diverse tastes and interior aesthetics. chaplins.co.uk
