A stone’s throw from the vibrant energy of London, on the Metropolitan line since 1892, this idyllic town promises a getaway that feels worlds apart yet is effortlessly within reach. Built in the 16th Century, 25 High Street, Wendover, once part of Bosworth House, was originally a gentleman’s residence. Wendover, the Antiques Centre. A great deal of renovation work was undertaken, exposing the remains of the wall paintings. Four inglenook fireplaces were uncovered, one where we have a large welcoming wood fire in the winter. When the old safe was removed from beside one of the inglenooks an old dog leg staircase was found leading up to the rooms above the archway. but no one was there. A lady visiting the Antique Centre said she had been followed around upstairs by a young girl in a long white nightdress and bare feet. Another lady, some years later, told us her name was Victoria and she liked sitting in a child’s rocking chair on the landing. One lady would not go into a particular room because of the ‘presence’ there. A gypsy who came in told us there was a ghost, a man and he was angry, but not with us because he liked how we had restored the old Tudor House! To reach the rear of the Antiques Centre you pass under a covered gateway where an old stoup from the Chapel of St. John, which once stood on the Tring Road, can be found built into the wall. The old stable barn has become the Barn Gallery where artists and designers display and sell their work and other small individual shops can be found. The barn loft has become a working Studio/Gallery for a local artist. The old wooden building attached to the barn is now The Lady Grey Tea Room with its ‘Secret Garden’. Part of the Courtyard displays garden statues, sundials, urns etc., the rest is our car park.

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
Building Character, Shaping Futures The Cornerstone of Education at St Mary’s School, Gerrards Cross
S
t Mary’s School, in Gerrards Cross, consistently achieves individual student success through a finely balanced approach that develops the whole student during her time with us. Character education is a deliberate and purposeful part of our holistic education. In teaching children the values, beliefs and behaviours that they need to be responsible, successful members of our school community, we are developing in our students the skills and mindset they need to strive for excellence and become role models who will take their place in the world and achieve their goals in whatever field their passions and interests lie. As we encourage our students to develop themselves holistically, we are also supporting their well-being and positive mental health. We know how important it is that we ensure all our students are equipped for a modern and changing world, where new technologies and major demographic and environmental changes are predicted to transform education and employment over the coming decades. Using the acronym TAKE CARE, we identify a range of character strengths as important for students to develop. St Mary’s students are : • Team players, who enjoy leading and engaging with peers as mentors, as collaborators in lessons, in sports teams and in musical ensembles. Our students take on leadership at all levels of our school, gaining a sense of purpose and responsibility when supporting their peers and the wider community.
28 FEBRUARY 2024
“Providing a framework of support and challenge to develop non-cognitive skills, character education underpins the success and wellbeing of all members of our community”
• Adventurous, embracing new challenges and opportunities, for example, trying one of the sixty clubs we offer each week throughout the school. Kind and empathetic, acting as positive role models by supporting each other and showing respect for everyone in our diverse community. • Enthusiastic, sharing their enjoyment of their learning and actively leading and supporting charity events to raise awareness or fundraise. • Curious, engaging in their learning, asking questions and seeking out knowledge. • Ambitious to achieve their personal best academically and to learn new skills outside of their academic lessons. • Resilient, ready to have another go if something does not work the first time, and recognise that success is a journey and not just a final product. • Excellent, in that they strive to be the best they can be, acting with honesty and integrity in everything they do.
Character education underpins everything we do at St Mary’s. It is integrated into our academic curriculum; students are challenged not just to be active in their learning, but to take the lead, to be curious, and to be academically ambitious under the guidance and supervision of their teachers. Fostering habits that lead to such an active approach requires teachers to know each student they teach and what will support and challenge them in their learning pathways.
At St Mary’s School, Gerrards Cross, every student is an individual, and we encourage our students to strive to be the best version of themselves and teach them how to be resilient when things sometimes do not go to plan. By encouraging students to learn from their mistakes, we help them to develop a growth mindset, and to celebrate the pathway to success as well as the end result itself. We pride ourselves on our excellent examination results at GCSE and A Level, but equally we teach our students how to learn, so that they become lifelong learners. Students at St Mary’s enjoy the opportunities both in and out of the classroom to extend their learning under the belief that a school experience
should be vibrant and exciting. With a healthy mix of expectation and opportunity, our students naturally engage in a wide range of activities, both in and out of school, which provide them with a sense of accomplishment, meaning and engagement. The rich tapestry of clubs, societies, and community work ensures that each student finds their place at St Mary’s, and this helps to build our students’ sense of confidence and pride. They leave their school education achieving far more than the excellent A Level and GCSE grades that they have secured. They leave knowing that as young women they have the skills, ability, and confidence to change the world. And they do! The promotion of self-care and responsibility for others enhances the sense of community that underpins our in-school support for when our wellbeing might be impacted. It is not just our students who TAKE CARE, all school staff at St Mary’s, plus a team of Sixth Form Peer supporters, have been trained in Mental Health Awareness through the MHFA England courses. Our pastoral and medical teams support students to ensure positive mental and physical health, whether this is through a proactive and bespoke pastoral programme for each year group, or encouraging those who need support into additional services at the earliest opportunity, reducing the chances of escalation. Bertie, our Well-being Dog in training, will gradually enhance targeted emotional support for students requiring assistance. Providing a framework of support and challenge to develop non-cognitive skills, character education underpins the success and wellbeing of all members of our community. We would love to welcome you to St Mary’s to have a look at our school in action on Friday 8th March. Visit our website – stmarysschool.co.uk/ visit-us to sign up. FEBRUARY 2024 29

Giving your talented child the head start to a successful future
I
t is a wonderful moment when your child discovers an interest they are passionate about and shows a real talent for. Whether it be dance, acting or music, the performing arts give young people the opportunity to learn a wide range of life lessons and is even proven to support their academic studies. It helps promote self-esteem and a healthy self-image while being a fantastic confidence booster. Tring Park School for the Performing Arts offers a unique opportunity for talented children from age 7 to thrive with like-minded people, in an inclusive and creative environment. Introducing this type of vocational education at a young age can indeed offer numerous benefits, which include: Confidence and self-expression: Regular performances can boost a child’s self-confidence, helping them become comfortable presenting in front of others, while encouraging them to express themselves creatively. Teamwork and collaboration: Collaborative performances can improve teamwork, communication, social skills, and empathy among peers. Academic performance: Studies have shown that involvement in the arts can boost academic performance by improving concentration and discipline. These skills are transferable to many aspects of a young person’s life, regardless of their further education or career choices.
Early skill development: Children who display a talent for the arts benefit from being in a place that can offer specialised teaching from an early age. They can hone their skills in an environment with other young people from a variety of different backgrounds, all with a similar interest, which is vital for nurturing positive social skills. An integrated day: Students participate in a diverse timetable which enables them to enjoy a mix of academics and vocational training all within the same day Tring Park offers an enriched, integrated curriculum with a unique balance between vocational and academic studies to suit the ‘budding’ performer. The school boasts alumni including Hollywood stars Lily James and Daisy Ridley and is proud of its young performers starring in popular theatre shows such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Frozen and Annie. In a friendly, encouraging environment pupils can flourish and perform to the best of their ability. The Tring Park Prep department is hosting an open day on 8th March, for any students in years 3 to 6 who are interested in joining the school, for more information please visit: www.tringpark.com/event

EMPOWERMENT FOR EXCELLENCE
A Blueprint for Success at Gateway School In the dynamic landscape of Gateway School, our commitment to excellence is underscored by our unwavering focus on empowerment across three pivotal areas.
T
hese school priorities form the blueprint for an even more vibrant and successful learning environment, ensuring that every child thrives and excels in their educational journey. “Creativity in the Curriculum.” At Gateway School, we believe in nurturing the spark of creativity in every child. We create a dynamic and innovative learning environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking. We enrich the educational experience for every child by providing them with opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Through challenge days, real-life impact projects, digital skill development and inspiring guest speakers, we empower our pupils to think creatively, embrace mistakes as part of the learning process and become lifelong learners. “Developing Individuals.” We recognise that each child is unique, and our goal is to promote their holistic growth. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
Why choose an independent education?
E
ach year, around 50% of our Year 7 pupils join us from state schools. So why do so many parents choose a fee-paying school for their child’s senior education?
Help with the juggle: There are many practical benefits for busy working families who are juggling school runs with meal times, then transporting their children to the next music lesson/sports club/DofE session. Independent schools generally offer a longer day which is filled with a range of co-curricular activities, alongside academic learning. Boarding schools with day pupils will offer even longer days with the option of having all meals provided and the opportunity to stay overnight on an occasional basis. Broadening minds: Independent schools tend to offer a far greater range of non-academic activities. At Pangbourne there are countless opportunities to try options such as rowing, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting and yoga to name a few. There are also opportunities to visit lots of interesting places from the V&A Museum in London to the Nabugabo Learning Centre in Uganda. Support and stretch: If your child has a particular interest in areas such as sport, music, drama or art, they are far more likely to find the support and stretch they need to reach their full potential in an independent school. Reaching full academic potential: Most importantly for some parents, an independent education is more likely to lead to better academic results than their child would achieve in a state school environment. Class sizes are usually much smaller, which means that children receive closer attention from teachers. For those children who have the potential to achieve top grades, they are more likely to receive the support they need in an independent school.
40 FEBRUARY 2024
Life beyond school: With a combination of academic results and opportunities to pursue lots of different interests, independently educated children are better able to develop the ‘soft skills’ such as confidence, resilience, adaptability, teamwork and leadership, which will put them in good stead for life after school. In addition, independent schools tend to have a strong alumni network which they can call upon to offer support and guidance for pupils making career choices and deciding on their next steps. There are often opportunities to build up networks and connections which can be invaluable when building up a career. Community: There are usually plenty of opportunities to get to know other families and to become part of a school community. At Pangbourne, our parents’ association organises a number of social events for families to come together at dinners, BBQs and at our College Sundays. An independent education is a significant investment into your child’s future. The key is to identify the school which is the right fit for your child and your family. If you can find a school which offers all of these benefits, it will be a very good investment indeed. Samantha Greenwood, Senior Deputy Head, Pangbourne College Pangbourne College is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 11-18 in West Berkshire. We are a community where you can flourish. Providing a challenging academic curriculum, we also offer plenty of cocurricular opportunities for sport, art, music, drama and adventurous training, so that each individual fulfils their potential and develops the confidence, values and skills to make a positive difference to the world.

Building a Lifetime Love of Learning “There is something quite special about just having girls that means that they can be themselves and have no limits” Mrs Melanie Horn, Head of Cadogan House (RMS for Girls)
F
ounded in 1788, RMS for Girls is one of the oldest girls’ schools in England. The school moved to its current Rickmansworth location in 1934 where it is situated amidst 315 acres of stunning green parkland. With so much space, RMS offers an exhaustive list of facilities that all pupils, from the age of two to eighteen, make the most of whenever possible. Life at RMS begins with pre-school and nursery in Ruspini which is located within the heart of the main school. Girls then progress to Cadogan House (located opposite the Chapel and the Great Hall) to complete Reception to Year 6 under the watchful eye and first class leadership of Mrs Melanie Horn. Mrs Horn is no stranger to RMS having been a student at RMS from the age of thirteen. Having spent many years working in both the independent and state school sectors, Mrs Horn was delighted to return to RMS as Head of Cadogan House in January 2022. When asked what are the aspects of RMS that you hope to keep as you lead the School? Mrs Horn was very clear in her response: “That legacy of teachers knowing each individual is really important to me. I never want that to change. It is a very unique school in that sense. I always felt like the staff knew me when I was a pupil here. They knew that I was the eldest of four siblings, they knew unique things about me, they knew who I was and how I fitted in the world. It is the knowledge. RMS staff take the time to know every pupil and find out what helps them learn. RMS taught me the value of the individual and that is what I’ve taken moving forward in my own career. Coming back, it is still the same and keeping that is really key. I also love how important outdoor learning is to teachers and to the students individual journey. I am looking forward to how we develop and extend this outdoor program across the school”. Having experienced teaching in mixed environments as well as all boys, she has found the switch to all girls very interesting. “Fundamentally children are children, but the girls do say things like ‘Mrs Horn I love your

glasses’. I don’t think my boys at the last school ever even noticed that I wore glasses. The lovely thing about all the girls is that they will take risks and get involved in everything there is no ‘girl-thing’ or ‘boy-thing’. There is something quite special about just having girls that means that they can be themselves and have no limits. And that’s exactly what I want for them, I want no limits” (Mrs Horn). For more information, please contact Mr Marc Carter, Head of Admissions, either by email to admissions@rmsforgirls or by calling 01923 725354.

Choosing the right Nursery or School Lucy Gordon, Head of Pre-Prep at The Beacon School in Amersham gives her advice.
W
hat advice do you have for parents when selecting the right Nursery or School for their child? Choosing the right setting for your child should be an exciting experience. Using the website as the first point of call will give you a flavour. Arrange a visit during an open day as well as during a normal day where you can see the children in action, engaged in their learning and play. Have a tour, meet the staff, ask questions. What are the interactions like between children and staff ? Can you see your child happy and settled in the environment? Consider class sizes and the structure of the day. We have small class sizes with excellent child to adult ratios. The staff get to know the pupils well, their interests and families. Parents are welcome to speak with Nursery staff at drop-off and pick-up. Opening hours and location are important factors. Is there a bus or car service? Are shorter days offered for Nursery? Is there wrap-around care? Are meals/snacks provided at these times? What sets an educational Nursery apart from other options? At an educational Nursery, activities are structured through play based and adult-led learning to ensure progression and development in the key areas, which are essential for their future schooling. Classrooms should be set up with exciting activities for weekly Maths and Literacy focus. They should set fun topics (i.e. outer space or dinosaurs). Using a cross-curricular approach ensures all learning is linked. An educational approach works with small groups to enable each child to work at the appropriate level 44 FEBRUARY 2024
of development, as well as being supported and challenged. Specialist lessons encourages each child’s development in specific subjects. At The Beacon, we offer specialist lessons in Music, French, Games, Swimming. This prepares children for the more formal timetable as they progress through to school. What’s important to ensure a smooth transition from Nursery to Reception? Meeting the Reception teacher is the first step. Transition days are great. It’s beneficial to have a Nursery or Pre-school attached to the main school. Beacon boys are familiar with the setting and staff, they meet their Reception teacher on many occasions to build early relations. Staff have thorough hand-over meetings with the new teacher. Parents are invited in during the term before their son starts to speak with staff and visit. The solid start they receive in Nursery is built upon as they move into Reception. The Beacon is an independent school and Nursery for boys aged 3-13. Open Morning: Friday 10 May 2024. www.beaconschool.co.uk.

The Transformative Journey of Co-Education in Sixth Form In recent years, a notable shift towards co-education has emerged across various educational Sixth Form settings, and the benefit of doing so is something that Thorpe House School is determined to embrace
O
pting for co-education at this pivotal stage introduces a plethora of advantages extending beyond the academic domain, providing students with a distinctive and enriching experience that readies them for the diverse challenges and opportunities that await them. Thorpe House, in Gerrards Cross, is poised to launch its brandnew co-ed Sixth Form in September 2024, coinciding with the school’s centennial year. This forward-thinking initiative reflects their commitment to delivering tailored and bespoke education that embraces diversity and prepares each individual student for their pathway to happiness, good health and success. Diverse Perspectives and Collaboration A primary advantage of co-education in the Sixth Form lies in the promotion of diverse perspectives. The benefits of single-sex education lower down the school are exemplified at Thorpe. In a co-ed Sixth Form, students interact with peers from various backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and holistic learning experience as their studies become more refined and the scope for debate and sharing of ideas grows. This diversity of thought and experience contributes to a vibrant

academic atmosphere, where collaboration and the exchange of ideas become integral components of the learning process. Real-world Preparation Co-educational Sixth Forms emulate the complex reality of the world, offering students an environment mirroring those they will encounter in higher education and the professional realm. Learning alongside individuals of different genders prepares students for the collaborative nature of the workplace, aiding in the development of essential communication and interpersonal skills crucial for success in any field.
Of course, some students may still prefer the single-sex Sixth Form, but Thorpe will be providing that element of choice in Gerrards Cross, as the first co-educational Sixth Form in the town. Personal Development Beyond academics, co-education in Thorpe Sixth Form places a strong emphasis on holistic personal development. Students engage in a spectrum of extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and community engagement, contributing to their growth as well-rounded individuals. The more varied interests of both genders means that, despite Thorpe being small by design, the opportunities will be extensive and students will be free to explore all kinds pursuits and discover new passions that perhaps they had not been exposed to before.
emphasis on a “pioneering curriculum, life skills, pastoral care, and university and career guidance” reflects a dedication to nurturing each student’s unique talents and interests, fostering curiosity, confidence, and a love for lifelong learning. The traditional values that we would all want to see in our students are cherished and heightened in a manner that embraces the future focus of every one of our Sixth Form students. Situated perfectly on Gerrards Cross High Street, Thorpe House Sixth Form integrates with the local community, businesses, charities, and the wider community. This engagement ensures that students actively contribute beyond the school, creating a relationship that benefits both students and the community. This partnership is poised to make a lasting impact, shaping not only the educational experience of the students but also the future of the local community. In essence, Thorpe House Sixth Form is more than an educational institution; it’s a vibrant community empowering students to voice opinions, take the lead, and actively shape their educational experience. This student-centred approach fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, equipping students with leadership skills for their future endeavours. Choosing Thorpe House Sixth Form means embracing a dynamic, inclusive, and innovative educational journey transcending traditional boundaries of learning. Find out more about Thorpe House CoEducational Sixth Form at their open evening on Thursday 22nd February. Book your place here: www.thorpehouse.co.uk
Enhanced Social Skills Interacting with peers of both genders at the Sixth Form level enhances social skills and emotional intelligence. Students learn to navigate diverse social dynamics, building relationships and forming connections that extend beyond the classroom. These interpersonal skills are invaluable, laying the foundation for successful personal and professional relationships in the future. Whilst many of our Sixth Formers will have friends and siblings of the opposite gender, developing these skills in the educational environment is a different opportunity that will boost them socially and professionally. Tailored Learning Experience Thorpe House’s commitment to a bespoke curriculum tailored to individual aspirations sets it apart. The FEBRUARY 2024 47

Finding the Balance in Boarding As a traditional prep school with a strong boarding heritage, making the decision to remove compulsory boarding at Years 7 and 8 was a big one.
O
ne of the advantages of being a small school, is that we can easily seek feedback from our stakeholders. What we were hearing from prospective parents who chose not to send their sons to Caldicott was that they weren’t ready to commit their son to weekly boarding a few years down the line. What we were hearing from some current parents was that their sons weren’t settling into boarding as quickly as they’d hoped. We’re happy to say that since the announcement, the majority of feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. We are undeniably advocates of boarding; we regularly hear how impressively quickly Caldicott boys settle into life at Harrow, Eton and the wide range of other senior schools that our boys progress to. Obviously, this is thanks to the work
“We’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3”
of many teachers over several years at Caldicott, but one key part is the precisely designed path that starts in Years 3 and 4 and finishes in Year 8, when boys leave with two years of boarding under their belts. For this reason, we’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3). ‘Day Plus’ is the name of our new offering for Years 7 and 8. It includes two nights of optional boarding a week, which can be easily added to; despite these nights not being compulsory, they allow boys to still take part in our very popular evening activities programme. Our Day Plus offering is best described as striking a balance between ensuring boys are enriched and prepared in all the ways that we’re known for, yet it also allows flexibility for the individualised needs of each child. Our relationship with top boarding senior schools is well documented, but our strong relationship with many 13+ day schools is less widely known. Our Deputy Head (Academic), Ma’am Naidoo, regularly attends meetings and events at lots of day schools such as Merchant Taylors, St Paul’s, Westminster, and is thoroughly familiar with the application process to these schools. To dig a little deeper, come to one of our open mornings. Book now at: www.caldicott.com/welcome-to-caldicott.

Dangers of Delaying your Divorce If you’re planning to divorce, the thought of splitting your assets may mean you’re putting it off for financial reasons. However, B P Collins’ family team advises that whilst there is always merit in allowing the dust to settle, waiting too long to resolve matters may backfire in some cases, as uncertainty and additional complexity can be generated when matters are left to drift. For example...
I
f you make any post separation gains such as a lottery win, receive an inheritance or are awarded bonuses or Long Term Incentive Plans from work, you may end up having to give some of this money to your spouse. Even if a court decides that these funds are non-marital, they can still be considered to meet their needs. Likewise, any debts that your ex accrues post separation may end up being taken into account when you finally do divide up your assets. Emotional toll Delaying your divorce could also prevent you and your spouse from moving on emotionally as you are intrinsically bound together by marriage. This is particularly difficult where there might be domestic abuse in a relationship. Not the main breadwinner? If you’re not the main breadwinner, you may feel scared about your financial future when you divorce. However, by getting expert legal advice early on, will not only help to remove some of the uncertainty, but discussions on an informed basis are usually more constructive. It’s important to remember that seeking legal advice at any stage does not commit you to getting divorced, and everything you discuss with your solicitor is kept strictly confidential.
50 FEBRUARY 2024
Final financial order Don’t forget that even if you and your spouse divorce, the law allows claims to be made in the future - even many years down the line - when no final financial order has been made. However, with one in place, any money or assets you receive or earn afterwards, will remain yours. Seek expert advice With all the emotional turmoil you may be experiencing, having to worry about your future finances could add to your anxiety. You should therefore look for an experienced family lawyer with whom you have a rapport and feel supported by. It should be someone who will provide clear and constructive advice, even if that includes things you don’t want to hear. B P Collins’ family team also has an excellent network of financial advisers; mortgage brokers; accountants for tax advice and guidance on the impact of waiting to transfer assets between you, if your assets are sizeable; plus divorce coaches who can help you through the entire process. The benefits of family mediation Family mediation is a process in which an independent and professionally trained mediator helps separating couples resolve any challenges and disputes faced when parting ways. The mediator will help you to work out arrangements for things such as housing, children, and finances, including pensions and other assets. Mediation involves an initial assessment meeting, often referred to as a MIAM – Mediation information and assessment meeting, where the mediator will see you on your own to discuss the process and find out what you are hoping to achieve and for you both to consider whether mediation will be appropriate in your case. There will then be a series of joint sessions between you and your partner, which are facilitated by a mediator. The mediator will help you and your partner make decisions in a constructive and confidential setting, making sure all disputes are resolved with as little conflict as possible. If you do not feel comfortable with face-to- face mediation, the mediator will offer video mediation or shuttle mediation – where you will each be in a separate room and the mediator will shuttle between you. What are the benefits? There are several benefits to the mediation process, some of which are set out below: Cost effective: Mediation tends to be more cost-effective than involving solicitors. Even if you do not come up with a complete agreement in mediation, the mediator should help you narrow the issues that are being disputed. Confidential: Disputes resolved through mediation and not in court are completely confidential for both parties involved.
Faster outcome: Mediation generally takes less time to complete, allowing for an earlier solution than through the legal or court route. More control: Mediation increases the control both parties have over the resolution. Both parties are involved in negotiating their own agreement and no settlement can be imposed upon you. It improves communication: The mediation process helps both parties to focus on communicating effectively and relieves the pressure and stress that court disputes may bring.
Flexible: The process is informal and there are no formal rules and evidence required although the mediators at Blaser Mills Law will explain the advantages of full financial disclosure. How Blaser Mills Law can help By focusing on clear and open communication, family mediation has the potential to get you and your partner on the same page. Voucher Scheme Blaser Mills Law is part of the Family Mediation Voucher scheme, where in some cases, we can help you claim up to £500 towards your mediation costs. The Ministry of Justice scheme, offers contributions of up to £500 per case/family for mediation that includes the arrangements for the children / child , encouraging people to seek to resolve their disputes outside of court where appropriate to do so. The purpose of the scheme is to promote the benefits of mediation and divert matters where appropriate away from the family courts which are backlogged and a much more contentious way of trying to resolve most cases.

25 BILLION WAYS TO LOVE YOUR GUT! February is often referred to as the month of love, as it is National Heart month and Valentine’s Day falls mid-month. With this in mind, we wanted to take the opportunity to talk about the ways that friendly bacteria can help to give your gut some love this year. What are friendly bacteria? Friendly bacteria are also known as live bacteria, live cultures, or probiotics. They are bacteria that are found in large numbers in foods and supplements, which when eaten, act as proxies or substitutes to provide support for the bacteria that live naturally in our digestive tract. Foods that contain these friendly bacteria include sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi, kombucha and plain cultured live yoghurt. Eating these foods daily will provide us with many billions of bacteria, which can help to support our microbiome with no need for supplementation. In modern western society however, few of us regularly consume or enjoy these probiotic, bacteria-rich foods and friendly bacteria supplements can be a convenient and preferable alternative. How do friendly bacteria support the gut? We all have trillions of bacteria living both in and on our body, known as the human microbiome, which significantly outnumber our own human cells and
work symbiotically with our bodies to support our health. Billions of these bacteria are found in our intestines and referred to collectively as the gut microbiome, where certain strains and species perform specific tasks that support our gut, immune and overall health. The myriad of functions of different strains of gut bacteria includes (but is in no way limited to) supporting the structure of the digestive tract, defending against pathogens entering the body, producing vitamins and other substances used by the body, and supporting energy production.
Friendly bacteria or probiotics work by becoming part of the gut microbiome and supporting the colonies of bacteria already present in performing these tasks. Why 25 Billion friendly bacteria? ProVen Probiotics For Adults – 25 Billion is the flagship product in our range. It is the original product that first launched our brand in 2012 and has been the subject of more than 15 clinical trials undertaken over two decades across a wide variety of health conditions and consumer groups, including men, women and children. This product contains 25 billion of our proprietary multi-strain live bacteria blend per two capsules as this is the dosage used in most of our adult clinical trials and at which we have seen benefits in relation to supporting the microbiome and positively impacting symptoms. All Pro-Ven products are available at www.provenprobiotics.co/uk - scan the QR code on the top of the page to access our shop.

Embracing Stillness The Power of Yin Yoga by Tessa Rohrig from Seed Wellness
I
n our bustling, interconnected world, the constant hum of modern technology that surrounds us pulls our attention in every direction. As a yoga teacher, I find myself increasingly guiding my students back to the essence of stillness – a practice that seems more vital than ever in our fast-paced, digital era. We are also bombarded with external information about what our bodies and minds need. From fitness apps prescribing workouts to nutrition guides dictating our diets, it’s easy to lose touch with our inner selves. The irony is that despite being more connected than ever through screens and networks, we often feel more disconnected from our own essence. Yin yoga, with its gentle, prolonged postures and emphasis on stillness, offers a profound remedy to this disconnection. In the quiet space that it provides, we create an opportunity to listen to our inner landscape, to the whispers of our intuition that often get drowned out in the noisy clamour of modern life.
78 FEBRUARY 2024
One of the core principles of yin yoga is the encouragement of surrendering into each pose, allowing gravity to do the work as we release tension from the body. This surrender, however, goes beyond the physical realm. It invites us to relinquish our attachment to external stimuli, to detach from the constant stream of information vying for our attention. Through the practice of yin yoga, we learn to tune into our bodies and ask the essential questions: What does my body need today? What emotions are arising within me? By cultivating stillness, we create space for self-inquiry and introspection. This process of self-discovery is a powerful antidote to the external noise that often dictates our choices and actions. In the soothing quietude of yin yoga, we are able to attune to the subtle rhythms of the natural world, fostering a sense of harmony and balance. It’s a reminder that our bodies are not separate entities but integral parts of the interconnected web of life. In a world dominated by the constant demand for productivity and efficiency, the importance of stillness cannot be overstated. Yin yoga offers us a refuge where we can unplug from the external chaos and reconnect with our authentic selves, to the wisdom of our bodies and the whispers of our intuition guiding us towards what we truly need in mind, body, and spirit. As we navigate the currents of daily life, let us not forget the transformative power of stillness – and enable the quiet practice of yin to bring us back to ourselves.
“Through the practice of yin yoga, we learn to tune into our bodies and ask the essential questions: What does my body need today? What emotions are arising within me?”

ORIGIN - YOUR POOL, YOUR WAY
E
levating your home to new heights with a bespoke indoor swimming pool and pool house is the ultimate home improvement. It grants you the ability to create a haven of relaxation, enjoyment and convenience within the confines of your own home and garden, offering a luxurious and yearround swimming experience which defies UK weather restrictions. Origin understands that an indoor pool not only adds value to your property but enriches your daily life, making it a good investment for those seeking to enhance their living space. When it comes to designing a successful swimming pool and pool house, attention to detail and comprehensive planning are paramount. This unique endeavour differs significantly from conventional construction projects, it is essential to recognise that indoor pools necessitate specialised design across three critical domains: the pool chamber, the building structure, and the management of the pool building environment encompassing heating, dehumidification and ventilation.

“Saunas and steam rooms make a fantastic addition to any indoor pool, possessing their own set of health benefits that will leave you feeling revitalised after every visit to your pool house”
All of these must seamlessly integrate into a cohesive design from the outset to preempt disruptive, complex and potentially costly alterations post-construction. This is where Origin excels above the rest. To put it simply, they handle it all. With over 40 years of experience in indoor swimming pool design and construction, their team of specialists is ideally suited to guide you through the entire process. Each element can be tailored to your unique specifications, style and budget, resulting in the creation of your dream swimming pool. Designing a pool is a different undertaking compared to designing a house, and a lack of experience can result in a project that is neither feasible in design nor budget. Origin collaborates closely with you to devise a swimming pool design that harmonises with your lifestyle, home, and financial parameters. After all, swimming pool design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about achieving synergy between your home and pool area, ensuring your indoor pool is not only visually stunning but also a seamless addition to your life. Swimming is consistently voted one of the nation’s favourite forms of exercise, boasting physical and mental health benefits which often exceed expectations. It offers a superb form of low-impact exercise, gentle on the joints and accessible to individuals of all ages and fitness levels. It contributes to improved sleep quality, diminished symptoms of anxiety and depression and enhanced brain health by boosting blood flow to the brain, releasing endorphins and uplifting your overall mood through the soothing sensation of water moving over your body.
Saunas and steam rooms make a fantastic addition to any indoor pool, possessing their own set of health benefits that will leave you feeling revitalised after every visit to your pool house. They increase blood circulation, expel toxins from the body and offer stress relief by easing muscle tension. These serene spaces introduce tranquillity into your daily routine while complementing your swimming pool. If you’re looking to increase family time, your pool house could become a new social hub for everyone to enjoy by adding a gym, lounge area, games room or even a bar. These added elements are what make your space unique and Origin offers a bespoke process so your swimming pool and pool house can be completely tailored to your wants and needs. Whether you aim to create a personal sanctuary or a hub of entertainment, Origin possesses the expertise and experience to make it happen. They oversee every phase, from concept to completion, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy swimming in the comfort of your home. Top things to consider when designing a bathroom space fittings are the perfect choice. By hiding the pipes within the wall cavity, the fittings sit flush to the wall, reducing the possibility of bumping into them when showering and creating a sleek finished look. You can create additional in-shower storage by utilising the void in a stud or false wall to build alcoves for storing shower products, in turn maximising space on the floor. These alcoves can easily become a real design feature, by adding lighting and/or contrasting tiles to inject personality into the space.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS Shower glass comes in many shapes and sizes but there’s always an option to suit your space. Firstly, think about whether you want a shower enclosure or a more open space with a shower screen. If you’re opting for an enclosure, consider which shape will work best, such as pentagonal to utilise the corner of a room or three-sided if you have a bit more space available. If you go for shower glass, think about which style you like, whether that be Crittall-style, fluted or the emerging trend, etched.

GO ECO Sustainability within bathrooms has never been more important than it is right now and with the cost of living also rising exponentially, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise excess energy and water consumption within the bathroom. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fitted with a flow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each flow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption but still offer a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

AVOIDING COSTLY MISTAKES – “It is wise to enlist the help of an interior designer at the very beginning of any renovation” notes Alex. When details are thought of in advance and in collaboration with all parties involved, the margin of error is reduced, thus avoiding expensive mistakes and inconveniences down the line. RECOMMENDED TRADESPEOPLE Since setting up in 2014, Otta Design has built a trusted network of tradespeople and suppliers. Having the right team working on a project is essential to achieving the best finished result, on time and within budget.
W
e spoke to Ali Johnson and Alex Keith, directors of Otta Design, to find out how using a professional interior designer can save both time and money.
BUDGETING – “Keeping track of costs is essential no matter the project scale” says Ali. Otta Design always start by taking a thorough brief of requirements, timings and budget. They create a detailed estimate for each project, working within the given budget. Ali and Alex will always advise where savings can be made whilst still achieving the desired look and feel. TRADE DISCOUNTS - Designers receive significant discounts on everything from fabrics and furniture to fixtures and fittings. These can go a long way to covering the design fee, and many of Otta Design’s clients find that they end up paying much less for the service than they initially thought. 39504 FJ E AB NR UA UR AYR 2Y0 2240 2 4

Do I really need a design for your garden? This is a question we are often asked, and the answer is usually ‘yes’.
A
s Design Director for a garden design and build company I may be a little biased, but experience tells me that having a design, results in a better
garden. Benjamin Franklin said, ‘If you are failing to plan, you are planning to fail’. One suspects he had loftier concerns then what to plant in a Westfacing border, but the adage rings true. Clients often know what they want but don’t know where to start. My job is to bring those initial thoughts to life. How does it work? We start the journey by delving into your wants and needs for the garden at an initial free consultation. If you want to go ahead, a detailed survey and site analysis ensue. Then then fun starts as the survey sits on the drawing board like a canvas, awaiting the pen and some creativity. Ideas are developed until a ‘Concept Plan’ is produced. This is a detailed plan of the garden with the layout, materials, mood board and key structural planting all outlined. You may want a fully immersive 3D experience that can be done.

Like the design? Let’s get it priced. Don’t like the price? Let’s adapt the design. You want a garden, not a drawing, so we discuss and edit until we have the Final Design which is detailed, costed, client approved and used by the landscapers to deliver the build. Finally, colour, scent and structure are added as we develop a planting plan to outline each plant and its location. Images of each plant are provided, so it isn’t simply a wall of Latin. Colour, seasonal interest, maintenance, aspect and soil type are all accounted for. The approach we take means that almost all of our design projects become reality and with a design to hand, you know what you are getting… ….a garden to enjoy.
