DISCOVER THE ELECTRIC MOKE: RETRO STYLE MEETS MODERN ECO-FRIENDLY INNOVATION AT HENDY GROUP

FROM THE EDITOR

Whether you are exploring the local countryside or heading to some open water, this iconic car has been brought bang up to date with an Electric motor and it’s available to order now.

The MOKE still retains its long tradition of being a car which is all about the journey – no need to rush from A to B – and the latest models have impressive eco-credentials too.

This car is for having fun with friends and feeling the warm breeze on your face while exploring on four wheels, safe in the knowledge that your car is also whisper-quiet and sustainable.

Chilterns based artist, Catherine Hay, jumped at the chance to open up to us about her art and the inspiration behind it.

“I’m sitting in my art studio listening to the rain drumming on the roof. Yes, my very own (albeit modest) art studio! Something which, until a few years ago, felt like a pipe dream! In school I loved and excelled in art, but at 18 and wanting to make my way in the world, the struggling artist stereotype seemed all too risky so I put my feelings aside.

I managed to keep my hand in painting animal portraits and landscapes part -time, but it became clear this just wasn’t enough!

Times are tough at the moment and with mounting financial pressures, if you’re thinking about making a Will, it may be

tempting to choose a DIY or online one, which may cost less than £20 and only take 30 minutes to complete. But if this sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Decisions about the future of your estate are important and protecting your loved ones from unnecessary pressure after you’ve gone is paramount, so you need to get it right.

At Home Farm’ returns for a third summer season of events and residencies with a stellar lineup of musicians, chefs and comedians. These uniquely intimate, curated events are held within the rustic setting of Home Farm, Elstree. The first instalment of this year’s much anticipated lineup of music artists, in collaboration with Communion Presents, include Laufey, and The Shires. And, for the first time, Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion will also be joining the summer series. Celebrated chefs, including Sabrina Gidda, Josh Katz, Noor Murad, and Social Pantry’s Sarah Turner will be collaborating with Ben Quinn and his acclaimed Woodfired Canteen to create feasts served under the oak.

The British Motor Corporation (BMC) continued to produce variations of MOKE starting with the Morris Mini MOKE, in 1966 for the Australian market. Throughout the 1960s MOKE established itself in popular culture featuring in four James Bond movies. (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Moonraker)

A Celebration of Nature

Fast forward to 2020 and Covid hit! In lock down and with an altered perspective, I had the ‘life’s too short’ realisation and decided to put all of my energy into making it as a full-time painter! Guess what? It worked!

Not only was I painting full -time, I also started to open up my style.

I became more expressive and brave with colour and texture, I moved away from reference photos to allow me to be spontaneous and follow my instincts. I painted for maximum joy and fulfilment rather than making paintings I thought

most people would like to see.

I found new confidence and accomplishment in my work and subsequently in my life in general,  Fast forward once more to today, in my garden studio, in Berkhamsted.

Large colourful abstract and semi-abstract paintings adorn the walls, all at various points of completion.

My work now is bold. A celebration of nature. It’s about finding and appreciating the magic that’s in every speck.

A lovely part of it is that most of my collectors are UK based and often local. I get such pleasure from getting to know clients, visiting their homes and eventually hanging their perfect artwork in place. It’s a wonderfully complete process that I would never want to change.”

If you would like to commission a painting, Catherine offers a free initial planning consultation in your home to discuss ideas and plan your perfect painting before you go ahead. She offers a try before you buy option and you can even reserve and pay for pay for work in instalments. You can view her paintings on her website www.catherinehayartist.com or you can visit her in her Berkhamsted studio.

FUTUREPROOF YOUR FUTURE PLANS

Times are tough at the moment and with mounting financial pressures, if you’re thinking about making a Will, it may be tempting to choose a DIY or online one, which may cost less than £20 and only take 30 minutes to complete. But if this sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Decisions about the future of your estate are important and protecting your loved ones from unnecessary pressure after you’ve gone is paramount, so you need to get it right. Here’s why…

• Mistakes can often be made with DIY Wills. For example, failing to get it witnessed correctly by two independent adults at the same time – neither of whom can be a beneficiary - and a failure to sign the document correctly, are common errors which could make the document invalid. Other mistakes include misspelled names, illegible writing or not wording things properly.

• If there are any additional complications in your life, a DIY Will may not be able to accommodate this. This is particularly the case if you are not married to your partner, if you and your partner have children from previous relationships, if you are looking to share properties between multiple beneficiaries, if you own a business, or have assets overseas.

• Problems can also arise if your circumstances change – for example if you wish to redistribute your assets or you get married - as many DIY Wills cannot accommodate this and some handwritten notes on the original Will to highlight your new decisions will not suffice.

• There is a minefield of legislation, case law and tax implications that you need to be aware of, not to mention the practical considerations which go side by side with estate planning. A Wills, trust and probate lawyer can ensure all obligations are met and confirm you have thought of everything, so that the Will is comprehensive and watertight.

• If mistakes are made, a dispute over your estate could follow after you’ve passed away, which can be time consuming, expensive and stressful for everyone involved.

B P Collins has a team of Wills, trusts and probate lawyers, that can help you write or review your Will and provide bespoke advice on next steps. The team are also members of the Law Society’s Wills and Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS).

which was an activity enjoyed by a great number of writers that took inspiration from the grounds, including acclaimed author H.G. Wells and Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, as well as the renowned poet John Milton.

Retaining much of the original features from the site’s period as a spectacular estate, one of the key features is a stone statue, Gott’s Monument, which was originally erected in 1785 by the first owner of Newland Park, Henry Gott, to commemorate the death of a stag killed by King George III on a hunt in the woodlands that surround the grounds.

Newland Park was once a grand mansion set on 200 acres of private land, with a succession of owners that enjoyed the company of prominent figures, including Kings, political activists and renowned writers. After close to 50 years of the Grade II listed house being out of residential use and falling into disrepair, leading developer Comer Homes is transforming the expansive site into a considered collection of premium houses and apartments, which will allow residents to enjoy the lifestyle of a country estate for a fraction of the price.

Country house experts at Sole agents for the development, Hamptons have estimated the Georgian mansion would be worth over £25 million in today’s market (if the house was fully renovated and functional as a residence). With prices at Newland Park ranging from £695,000 to £1.950 million purchasers have the exciting opportunity to live like the lord or lady of the manor for between 3-8% of the true value of the mansion house and wider grounds.

Comer Homes continues to restore the grounds and original house, which will be converted into apartments as part of a later phase, whilst also delivering modern facilities that will make Newland Park one of the best private residential developments in the UK.

Residents can walk the expansive grounds, which feature a mixture of landscaped and wild planted gardens and parkland, as well as children’s play areas and modern sports facilities.

This carefully curated greenery will provide residents of Newland Park with the feeling that they are walking across their very own grand country bolthole in the heart of the Chalfonts,

MEET THE HEAD: Mrs Jill Walker, Maltman’s Green School

Maltman’s Green School has a rich history of preparing girls for the future with 85% qualification rate in Bucks 11+ and a strong reputation for preparing girls for entrance to the top independent senior and grammar schools.

In 2020 Mrs Jill Walker became the school’s eighth headmistress, bringing with her a passion for STEAM and an innovative, rigorous approach to the curriculum. Here, we find out a little more about her.

What attracted you to Maltman’s Green?

I am passionate about all girls’ education and how it enables girls to find their voice, develop self-belief and possess the self-confidence to speak up and speak out. The rich history of Maltman’s means these values are in its DNA. Fantastic facilities and highly skilled teachers mean the school is able to deliver academic excellence and offer an unrivalled extra-curricular programme where each girl has the opportunity to enjoy finding her strengths and exploring her passions.

What do you think makes Maltman’s Green stand out?

Its fantastic facilities and highly skilled teachers –this means that the school is able to deliver academic excellence alongside sport, music and the arts to help girls develop into well-rounded individuals.

Why is STE(A)M so important to you?

A vibrant and carefully crafted STEAM programme nurtures creativity and adaptability, builds selfconfidence, the ability to work flexibly with others and fosters empathy and a socially responsible, outward looking mind-set. These are key skills and attributes our children will need to rely upon in the working world, where scientists, engineers and mathematicians work collaboratively with creative industries, harnessing the power of technology to find innovative and novel solutions to problems.

What does being a head mean to you?

Leading and serving a school community is a

huge privilege - supporting families and enabling and encouraging staff and pupils to realise their potential.

What advice would you give to parents looking at private education for the first time?

Go and visit schools, talk to the Head, think about the welcome you receive from all the people that you meet when visiting, can you picture your child in the school? Does the school reflect your own values and what is important to you? Will the school prepare your daughter for a bright future?

How do you think a head can make a real difference to an individual pupil?

By recruiting the best teachers, knowing each of their pupils as an individual, taking them seriously and encouraging and praising them, providing them with challenge and also support, working in partnership with their parents and creating a school environment where they feel happy and safe.

What are you known for?

My enthusiasm, determination, rapid staccato walk, strong opinions, loud laughter and loyalty.

Changing a child’s surname

What you need to consider.

Achild’s surname can be a significant part of their identity and ancestral history. The decision on whose surname a child should carry can therefore be a substantial one.

Sometimes, one parent may decide that it is necessary for a child’s surname to be changed. This often occurs when parents separate and the mother may want her and her child to use her maiden name, for example.

It is not a decision that should be taken lightly, so here are five key things that you should consider.

Obtaining agreement

A surname can be lawfully changed, provided that all those with Parental Responsibility give consent. Name changes can be implemented by Change of Name Deed or by Deed Poll.

If an agreement cannot be reached

If one person with Parental Responsibility disagrees with changing the surname, matters can become more complicated.

Without the consent of others with Parental Responsibility for the child, a child’s surname cannot be changed unless the Court grants permission.

The Court’s decision depends on the reasoning behind the application - note that there is a high threshold that will need to be met. The Court often takes the view that the child should keep its surname as it is, unless the change will result in an obvious improvement to the child’s welfare.

The child’s wishes and feelings

For children old enough to understand the implications of a name change, we advise those with Parental Responsibility to take the child’s wishes and feelings into consideration.

If the issue regarding the child’s surname is presented before a Court, the Court will consider the child’s wishes and feelings. However, it is worth noting that these are not always determinative to a Court.

The welfare of the child

Ultimately, the welfare of the child is of

paramount importance to the Court. When determining whether to agree to changing a child’s surname, the Court will consider the effect of the change on the child’s welfare, including considering the length of time the child has been known by their existing surname, the effect that changing (or not changing) their surname would have on them and the reason(s) for the change of surname.

Family tradition and heritage:

You may wish to consider the importance of maintaining a family name or cultural heritage.

In summary, changing a child’s surname is a complex decision that requires careful consideration of the legal, emotional and practical factors. If there is a dispute between those with Parental Responsibility, we suggest seeking legal advice and considering alternative dispute resolution options.

(They promise no mad hatters, but they do have a few rabbits roaming the grounds).

The vision for Horwood House began with a £6 million renovation, where they were careful to preserve the heritage of the grade || listed Manor House built in 1911, while sympathetically upgrading the rooms and public spaces. Newly decorated in a fusion of botanical heritage and scandi chic, and with a mood enhancing palette of earthy and natural tones, you’ll be chilled out by the time you’ve checked in!

But the transformation isn’t just limited to the building. The evolution also includes creating a culture that reflects their values. Those values are all about putting guests first, in everything they do. They are on a mission to create the kind of welcome you’d get from close family, albeit on a grander scale and they call it ‘hospitality from the heart’.  It’s the

You can meet friends, dine or sip in Harry’s Bar & Kitchen, celebrate a special occasion, or do business or relax in the H Spa with 15 m indoor pool and huge gym, perhaps enjoy a treatment or two!

Looking to tie the knot?

Horwood House promises a picture-perfect setting that never fails to impress with sweeping approach, original heritage features and idyllic grounds and gardens.

Whatever your reason to visit, Horwood House is your place in the country. So why not kick off your boots, go inside and make yourself comfortable.

World Class Music & Arts

Festival Week 13th-20th May

After forays into poetry, folk music, string quartets and great British composers, Chiltern Arts looks to May for your next instalment of world class music and arts, as ever, right on your doorstep…

For centuries, humans have used artforms as a vehicle for communicating in a way that words alone can’t quite manage. In 2023, Chiltern Arts brings us the theme of Love, Loss and the Passage of Time, exploring these concepts through music, visual art and literature with the usual array of events and top-quality artists coming to venues across the area.

Chiltern Arts opened their 2023 programme in early March with a Winter Warmer: three days of events in Berkhamsted, Great Missenden and Henley, featuring the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, Beethoven’s String Quartets and choral music that traced the life of Herbert Howells.

The season culminates with a week of outstanding concerts as the Chilterns once again become home to

artists of the highest calibre with the Festival taking place 13th–20th May. Critically-acclaimed tenor James Gilchrist and BBC Young Musician of the Year 2022 finalist Jaren Ziegler join musicians from The Purcell School for an evening that features Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Wycombe Abbey hosts a Shakespeare Day, with concerts from musicians including tenor Ed Lyon, soprano Rowan Pierce, countertenor Robin Blaze and lutenist Elizabeth Kenny

A continuing partnership with the Worshipful Company of Musicians sees two lunchtime concerts from young ensembles: lively dances and stories from the fantastic Endelienta Baroque, and glorious brass arrangements from Matilda Lloyd’s outstanding quintet, the Solus Trumpet Ensemble.

Other events during the festival week include a film screening of The Red Violin at The Elgiva Theatre in Chesham, dinner on the Thames with guitarist Craig Ogden (Henley), an evening exploring 500 years of musical legacies with The King’s Singers (Marlow), a musical snapshot of the time that Brahms spent with the Schumanns from Echor Music (Berkhamsted), Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil (Vespers) from the Choir of King’s College, London in Dorchester Abbey and a night of music and words from the City of London Sinfonia and actor Barnaby Taylor in Beaconsfield to close the season.

CHEF LAURIE GEAR May recipe & kitchen news

We have recently curated with our local Chiltern Brewery to produce our very own Artichoke labelled ale using ingredients sourced solely from the UK and the barley is grown on the Waddesdon Estate farms making this a truly local ale and of course can be enjoyed at the restaurant!

This ale has been used for this month’s recipe which is a little alternative, the peaches are roasted then paired with an ice cream using the ale although you can use any good

quality hoppy flavoured IPA.

The barley is also cooked in the ale until soft then blended with a little malt extract to reinstate that ale flavour. As an alternative to peaches, you can also use plums or nectarines as they all have a sweet, stoned fruit note which works beautifully with malty flavours, a good quality vanilla ice cream pairs well also if you do not fancy trying the ale ice cream, and of course a small chilled glass of the ale that you use matches up well as a drinks pairing!

RECIPE: ROASTED PEACH WITH CHILTERN ALE ICE CREAM, PEACH SOUP AND MALTED PEARL BARLEY

Ingredients - Serves

• 6 large ripe peaches – halved with the stone removed.

• 1.5 tbsp. caster sugar

• 1 vanilla pod

1. Place the water, sugar, vanilla pod, coriander seeds, orange juice and orange rind in a saucepan simmer for 10 mins add the peaches and cook until soft.

2. Remove the cooked peaches and strain the light syrup through a sieve.

Chiltern Ale Ice cream

2. Whisk the egg yolks with the sugar, then whisk into the hot milk.

3. Cook on a low heat for 4 – 5 mins stirring constantly.

4. Add the Chiltern Ale and leave to infuse until cool.

Is it time to talk about the finances?

This trend has not gone unnoticed, and Baroness Shackleton has further criticised the law for being ‘hopelessly out of date’ whilst being very vocal about her desire for reform. The Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and it is not a surprise to many that the common perception of a typical family has undoubtedly changed.

Is the current system for the resolution of financial settlements ‘past its sell-by-date?’ Baroness Deech has suggested that it is and has reintroduced the controversial Divorce (Financial Provision) Bill to the House of Lords.

There has been an elephant in the room for a while now suggesting that the judicial discretion facilitated by the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 has branded London as the ‘divorce capital of the world.’ The flexibility awarded by judicial discretion has encouraged several wealthy spouses to seek a divorce in our jurisdiction, in the hope of a more generous settlement.

Former Miss Malaysia, Pauline Chai filed for divorce from her multimillionaire husband in 2013 and was able to have her divorce heard in the UK as she had moved to Berkhamsted. She was successful in obtaining a settlement of £64 million to be paid by her former spouse. This is not an isolated occurrence and Princess Haya similarly filed for divorce in the UK from Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai.

Although the main provocation for this reform is the vast amount of judicial discretion that the financial outcome for both parties hinges on, it is worth acknowledging that this discretion is not entirely unfavourable. It shows that the law understands that there are various functioning family dynamics in our modern society. The current state of the law appreciates that there is no one size fits all approach, and the judges are able to use their discretion to reach a financial conclusion that reflects this. However, with flexibility comes a lack of certainty and it is widely accepted that different judges could reach a range of decisions from the same set of facts.

What are the main changes being proposed in the bill?

The reduction of spousal maintenance to maximum period of 5 years.

This would bring the English law more in line with the Scottish system which usually provides a maximum of 3 years for these periodical payments. It would also facilitate the court’s intention to establish a clean break as quickly as possible and encourage independence. It should be noted that there is a caveat that the period should only be exceeded if a party would be likely to ‘suffer serious financial hardship’ and that there are no other means of making a provision. However, this does appear to be a high threshold and it is uncertain at this stage what would meet it. Further to this, setting a precedent of five years could be undesirable for parties who have given up their careers to dedicate their time to raising the children and supporting their partner to fulfil their own career aspirations.

Making Pre-Nuptial and Post-Nuptial Agreements formally binding providing certain criteria are met. This proposal may well be welcomed with open arms following the court’s attitude to marital agreements after the case of Radmacher v Granatino that was decided in the UK Supreme Court in 2010. The current state of the law enables pre and post-nuptial agreements to be considered as part of

all of the relevant circumstances of the case when the court goes through the Section 25 factors to divide up the assets on a divorce. This landmark case confirmed that ‘the court should give effect to a nuptial agreement that is freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications unless in the circumstances prevailing it would not be fair to hold the parties to their agreement.’ However, this has not been cemented in statute to date and this bill aims to do just that.

Revising the definition of matrimonial property and limiting the powers of the court to make orders to non-matrimonial property. The bill aims to clearly identify at the outset what should be regarded as matrimonial property and suggests that primarily, only the assets that fit the definition should be divided between the parties. This approach appears to be methodical and will provide more certainty as to what is in the pot and can be subject to division.

The matter is currently with the Law Commission for review and we await the findings of the Scoping Report that is due to be published in September 2024.

Westminster Security

Personal security is a tax-deductible expense

employment, there is no necessity for any direct or impending danger. And the expenditure must be in connection with the use or provision of an asset or service which improves personal security.

CEOs, Directors, and other business executives could invest in a wide range of personal security services and assets, such as close protection, security chauffeurs, residential security guards, security doors and windows, and even a secure panic room if required.

Most company owners and directors are unaware that security expenses are tax-deductible for businesses.

While some companies see security as an unnecessary expense, it is essential to protect assets and employees. Investing in security can increase productivity, prevent theft, and protect owners and employees in the event of a robbery or targeted attack. Not only is security a wise investment, but it can also reduce tax liability.

This little-known fact is not widely discussed or published online. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allows companies to offset their security expenses on services and assets that improve property and personal security against their corporation tax liability. However, some requirements must be met to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The perceived threat and risks must be established from the particular trade or

Similarly, a company could invest in office or retail store security, such as CCTV and alarms, security guards, security shutters, etc. even bodyguards for employees in the event of a special threat. Sole traders or limited company directors working from a home-based office could also invest in tax-deductible services and assets to protect themselves from potential threats.

The interpretation of “special threat” is not necessarily prescriptive and introduces a grey area open to interpretation. Therefore, documenting the reasoning for the allowance is essential in case of a subsequent dispute. Businesses can benefit from increased security, improved morale, retention and reputation, productivity, and profits, whilst saving tax by investing in security.

Westminster Security are experts in threat and risk mitigation providing property and personal security in the UK and internationally for highthreat and high-risk business leaders and their families.

The Case for GOLD COINS

Gold has been a valuable commodity for thousands of years. For Rosland customers, there are many reasons why they continue to put their trust in gold. One of the best ways to build a gold collection is by purchasing gold coins, which offer a range of advantages over other forms of portfolio diversification.

COINS V’S BARS

Coins offer some distinct advantages over bars. They are typically easier to sell due to their smaller size and standardised denominations. They also come with an added level of security, as each coin is individually minted and marked with its denomination and year of issue.

VAT & CGT FREE

Gold coins of a certain purity have the unique advantage of being VAT free. Additionally, British legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, meaning you can sell them or pass them on safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to pay a single penny in tax.

TIPS FOR BUYING COINS

If you’re interested in purchasing gold coins, here are Rosland’s top tips to help you make an informed decision...

1. Research, Research, Research

Before making any purchase, it’s important to

research the types of coins you are interested in buying. Consider the historical significance, the rarity, the minting year, and the condition of the coins. This will give you a better understanding of the potential value of the coins over time.

2. Buy from a Reputable Dealer

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing gold coins is to buy from a reputable dealer. This ensures that you are getting authentic gold coins that are not counterfeit. Look for a dealer who is well-established and has a good reputation.

3. Buy Graded

When buying gold coins, it is important to consider buying graded coins. These coins are evaluated, authenticated, and graded by independent thirdparty grading services – at Rosland they use PCGS and NGC to grade all their coins.

4. Consider the Rarity

The rarity of the coins can have a significant impact on their value. The rarity of a coin can be determined by factors such as its mintage, its condition, and its historical significance.

5. Store Your Coins Securely

Finally, it is important to store your coins securely to protect your collection. Rosland offer all their clients the option of a storage solution – fully secure and insured all year round.

Sculpted and re-contoured in time for the wedding season

The Cosmetic Skin Clinic are a multi-award-winning clinic specialising in non-surgical aesthetic treatments that sculpt and re-contour the face and body.

We are well and truly beginning the marathon wedding and events season. Whether you’re the happy couple, groomsman, maid of honour, or simply a guest – you want to look your best. We’ve all experienced times when outfits are too tight or just don’t fit right, making us feel not so confident in our own skin.

We all have a stubborn pocket or bulge of fat that simply cannot be smoothed, no matter the layers of shapewear, exercise or diet. CoolSculpting is a great non-surgical alternative for slimming and smoothing that silhouette.

Why CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is at the top of the list for fat reduction. The results are long lasting, with positive effects being seen as early as 4-6 weeks, but most dramatic results are usually seen at 8-12 weeks. With CoolSculpting, you can attain smooth, toned, and recontoured results without the need for any recovery or downtime. Its options cater to area size and the number of areas required for precision and efficiency. Moreover, the effectiveness of CoolSculpting results is supported by numerous published clinical papers and peer-reviewed studies.

Areas for CoolSculpting

The procedure of freezing fat has been approved by the FDA to reduce stubborn fat and destroy fat cells in various body areas, including:

Double chin, bra fat, back fat, stomach/belly fat removal, knee fat, arms, love handles/flanks, legs (banana roll) and thighs.

How does it work?

CoolSculpting uses advanced cooling technology to safely freeze and eliminate fat cells without the need for surgery. After the fat cells are frozen and destroyed non-invasively, the body naturally eliminates them over a period of 12 weeks. This leads to a reduction in stubborn fat, resulting in a slimmer, sculpted, and toned physique.

Why choose The Cosmetic Skin Clinic?

With more than 25 years of experience,

OCCASIONWEAR TRENDS FOR WEDDING SEASON

Go bold with bright hues and sparkly accessories, says Katie Wright.

and blazer dresses, make sure yours is in a statement shade or bold print.

Ruffles

Wedding season is almost here, and with a surplus of ceremonies taking place due to the continuing pandemic backlog, you might have quite a few celebrations to attend. That means you’ll need outfits – and what’s more fun than getting dolled up for a special occasion? When it comes to occasionwear, spring/summer is all about joyous colour and texture – perfect for partying from day to night. From dresses and suits to shoes and bags, these are the trends every wedding guest needs to know about…

Slip dresses

The Nineties classic – a favourite of Kate Moss during her supermodel heyday – made a comeback on the SS23 catwalks as part of the boudoir dressing trend. Maxi and midi slip dresses in pastel and sunset shades are more wedding-friendly than the supershort lace-edged kind – they’re also a chic option for bridesmaids.

Retro florals

Flower power never goes out of style, and this season is all about hippie-inspired prints in the brightest hues. Look for retro detailing too – think halter necks, balloon sleeves and babydoll silhouettes.

Statement suits

Two-piece tailoring is what the coolest guests will be rocking this wedding season – and we don’t just mean the guys. From the timeless jacket and trousers combo to short suits

As seen on the catwalks at Richard Quinn, Molly Goddard and Chanel, ruffles are big news –literally – this season, with voluminous tulle and feathers galore. Go all-out with oodles of 3D froth or keep it simple with some soft, flowing

Embellished heels

Accessorise your statement suit or frill-tastic frock with a pair of blingy heels. Wear a pastel dress with bejewelled courts in a contrasting tone or add metallic sandals to a tailored look –these embellished beauties will give you lots of mileage throughout spring and summer.

Beaded bags

Complete your look with a vintageinspired beaded clutch bag. Decorated with intricate pearls and sequins, these pretty purses are just big enough to hold all your wedding day essentials.

CHALFONT CLOCKS

Chalfont Clocks are experts in all aspects of clock repair and restoration, working on all manner of timepieces and barometers, they have a wealth of knowledge and experience, not only in the repair of clocks but also in selling them.

Chalfont Clocks specialises in the unusual, from the extremely rare to the novel, they have built a collection of fine antique clocks at their shop in Little Chalfont to rival any London Dealer. From one-of-a-kind Regency regulators with solid silver dials to a clock made for an exam at the Ecole d’Horologerie de Paris in 1905, they have sought out clocks and timepieces that you won’t find anywhere else.

The showroom is a horological Aladdin’s cave of treasures, that the owner, Ashley Streather has an in-depth knowledge of he is happy to share. The history of clocks, their uses and meaning are diverse and fascinating, the story of one of their clocks made in the late 19th Century as a love token with small bronze Putti floating in billowing golden clouds holding the symbols of Cupid and Venus signifying love and fidelity is captivating. The clock still retains its original mercury gilding, a highly poisonous technique long since banned, of mixing 24 carat gold with mercury and burning it to evaporate the mercury leaving the gold behind, is shimmeringly beautiful.

An Ormolu Portico clock from the Napoleonic era made in Paris as possibly one of a kind is particularly evocative, as is a clock from the Officers’ Mess Hall of an RAF base. Made in 1938 it would have ticked away on a mantelpiece throughout The Battle of Britain

counting the hours as so many young pilots took to the skies never to return.

Ashley and his colleagues take delight in showing their customers the smallest details that make these clocks so interesting, there are the marks of previous clock repairs their initials and dates going back hundreds of years in some cases, there is a bracket clock made by Thomas Adams maker to Prince Albert, and any number of smaller carriage clocks and desk clocks, Alarm Clocks By Cartier and a gilded travelling compendium by Angelus made in 1948 in mint condition having never been used.

Chalfont Clocks is a fascinating shop, that not only sells clocks but repairs and restores them, with an open plan workshop at the back of their showroom, you can see how these horologists carry out their fascinating work for customers all over the country, it’s like The Repair Shop but in real life!

Spring trend report

The spring that has sprung in the home this year is rather different from the blossomy florals and gentle pastels you might expect to see as the seasons start switching. This year, we want our rooms to be filled with wonder, to open doors to the unexpected and to show us a different perspective on that which we thought we knew.

Our living spaces should be statements, elicit quiet ‘wows’ and challenge the predictable. The 2023 palette is still based around the natural, but with a twist – some tones are bolder, brighter and brazen, while some blend into the backdrop like they’ve been there all along. Shapes and patterns experiment with minimalism which is impactful as well as elegantly pared back. Here’s the Chaplins edit of the very best.

VIVID SKIES

From energetic blazes of ochre to flashes of fiery orange and bursts of intense magenta, 2023 hues are a force of nature, looking to the skies for inspiration and coming back with something surprising. A celebration of the colours that dance across the skies on the most bewitching of nights and beguiling of mornings, these exuberant shades

enliven us, exuding energy and oomph.

The perky early morning/evening-is-coming golden tone of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ME100 armchair by Jeffrey Bernett adds a whimsical, welcoming feel to the seat’s sculptural shape, a dazzling-yet-mellow flash of vitality which gives the whole room a glow.

Glas Italia’s XX Console Table by Johanna Grawunder is an exploration of light and colour made three dimensional. Harnessing the characteristics of a reflective glass prism, its intense pink and sizzling orange shades capture the hues of the most brilliantly-toned sky. COR’s Drop Pouf by Pauline Deltour joyfully deposits a bold burst of could-be-redcould-be-orange into a room, a shade from a sunset in its glorious final throws.

ANGULAR EXPLORATION

Unleash your wild side with the vogue for adventurous angles, courageous corners and liberated lines. A revolt against the rounded forms we’ve been drawn to until recently, these designs are experimental but approachable, their visual sharpness toned down by soft angles, natural materials, neutral shades and an abundance of creativity. It’s expect-the-unexpected with these objects, which flip reverse our go-to smooth shapes and care not for what came before.

Its surface decorated with minimalist modern marquetry, Gallotti&Radice’s Zen Desk by Massimo Castagna intersects angular segments of ash and rosewood for a simple yet striking asymmetric arrangement.

Merging the rounded with wide, open angles, Cattelan Italia’s Sautern Wall Mirror by Tosca Design is a geometric droplet, the area between the pointed steel frame and curved glass highlighted with cut-out negative space.

An explosion of criss-crossing shapes, the Big Bang Pendant Light by Enrico Franzolini and Vicente Gracia Jimenez for Foscarini is a jagged exploration of angular slices, shadows and diffused light.

SERENE SCENERY

If you listen carefully, you might hear the entire design world calling out ‘green is the new grey!’. Transformed into a background colour that’s snuck into our lives, the innately calming character of forest-y, fir-tinted, leafy green has wrapped around us with zero fuss and without anyone really noticing. It’s soothing, brings nature inside, goes with every colour in the spectrum, and makes us

exhale almost involuntarily.

Evoking images of sprawling Nordic firs, Muuto’s Cover Dining Chair by Thomas Bentzen feels like it’s just wandered in from the woodland, the timber’s grain remaining delightfully visible under its greenness.

Merging with the natural yet standing out for its industrial material, the green Outdoor Aplomb Pendant Light by Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere is crafted from concrete tinted in a soothing sage shade, ready to blend in with al fresco backdrops.

The textured, under-the-radar olive tone of Flexform’s Vulcano Outdoor Sofa by Antonio Citterio gives it an au-natural sense of tactility quietly dedicated to the beauty of nature.

OPEN STRUCTURES

Honour the craft skills that go into product design and embrace open structures, pieces that show off their frames, joints and supports and make them a beautiful part of their aesthetic. Honest, functionfused design is on the rise, pieces which don’t seek to hide their origins but are proud of them and harness them as decorative features. This new minimalism adds nothing which doesn’t need to be there, making the most of the building materials and methods which its construction relies upon.

Its body poised within a frame made up of solid Canaletta walnut legs, Porada’s Regent Chest of Drawers by Marelli & Molteni hovers separately from its supporting structure, highlighting its elegant construction as well as the piece’s main body.

Turning joints into decorative accents, the Nimbus Mirror by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu suspends its glazing within a ring of brass, while screws act as attractive accent detailing.

A grid-like skeletal structure of horizonal and vertical lines, the Coordinates C4 Ceiling Light by Michael Anastassiades for Flos illuminates and celebrates its simple scaffold-like form.

ARAMONO: The Beauty of Everyday Life

Although you might ordinarily head to Kensington to see world-renowned treasures at one of its many cultural venues, at Japan House London, until 30 June 2023, you can also delight in the beauty and ingenuity of the everyday.

Guests can get a glimpse into daily life in Japan over the last few hundred years through a display of aramono, a term which refers to household goods such as brooms, brushes, dustpans and baskets which are functional, ordinary and wellloved. This free display shows these objects piled high on a full-scale cart as they would have been in the 19th century by a trader selling his wares on the cart, he pulled along himself.

The display also invites guests to learn about the history of aramano. In Japan’s Muromachi period (1336-1573 CE), larger, cheaper daily commodities

necessary for daily life became known as aramono because they were considered to be ‘rough,’ which is the meaning of the word arai. Rooted in a time before plastic and electricity, aramono were made from natural materials, carefully chosen to ensure longevity. There are few differences between the aramono of then and now, and the functionality and durability of these well-made items carries lessons in design and sustainability that still apply today.

After admiring the everyday beauty of the items on display, you are invited to browse a select range of aramono for sale in the Shop at Japan House London. Whether you’re in need of a broom, brush, dustpan, basket or similar, the simple elegance of these everyday treasures, produced on a small-scale using centuries-old processes, is sure to be a talking point in any home.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.

A TRULY STUNNING SPACE

Premium products are often set apart from mid-market competitors with design components that are so subtle, they take the most discerning eye to spot them.

In this instance, the door fronts are bookmatched with vertical grain in Smoked Oak. The division of where each door or drawer starts and another one finishes is almost invisible, allowing the beauty of the wood and the overall design to take centre stage.

The resurgence of darker hues has definitely been seen across all Poggenpohl Studios, and on this kitchen the cabinetry has been paired with paler worktops as well as metallics to help lift the room and bounce light around the space. The walls are decorated with antique bronze mirror glass; a subtle take on mirrored finishes in the home, it creates muted reflections and warms the space. Here, the designer opted for open wall shelving, for the client to display sentimental as well as more visually appealing items, while the large drawers and doors below the Calacatta Imperiale Porcelain are for every day crockery and cutlery. A fabulous addition to this space was the creation and installation of a bespoke hanging shelf from the ceiling above the peninsula. Made in the same Smoked Oak as the doors with an embedded LED strip for overhead task lighting.

The ‘Showcase’ glass fronted cabinets that sit under the hob on the return of the island also have Antique Bronze Mirror Glass in the backs, sending light bouncing around and filling the inside with a soft, warm glow. The glass on the doors is tinted,

and it’s encased in bronze Aluminium frames. These stunning display cabinets with integrated lighting, can be used for decorative items, as well as ornaments that should be protected from little fingers.

By using open shelving, rather than filling the walls with cabinets, the room can appear lighter and brighter. But there is no shortage of storage in the kitchen for all those necessary pots and pans. In fact the use of large drawers can offer a much better ergonomic use of storage. The end result is a truly stunning space that will stand the test of time and will continue to be a real ‘wow’ factor when guests arrive into this home.

MARCH INTO SUMMER WITH BOTANICAL HOMEWARES

Independent design house FabFunky is heralding the start of summer with a blooming homeware collection that oozes summer vibes.

The Floral and Botanical collection is a myriad of floral blooms, luscious greenery and a smattering of wildlife and has been created to deliver a slice of summer into the home.

Designed by FabFunky founder Kelly StevensMcLaughlan, each of the creations bring the beauty of the outdoors inside across cushions and lampshades.

Kelly said: “There is very little we can do to control the weather but adding a flourish of botanicals and florals is a great way to inject colour and vitality indoors.

“There has been a lean towards more biophilic-inspired interiors these last few years, that is homewares that bring an element of nature inside. There is no doubt this collection has biophilic elements but it was also designed to bring real joy too.”

The collection is available from fabfunky.co.uk with prices starting at £62

Brand new wallpaper and interiors collection launched by The Smith Interior

Tattooist turned interior designer Nicola Smith launches her first ever exclusive collection featuring wallpaper, fabric, cushions and lampshades.

Taking maximalist animal print decor to the next level, Nicola Smith of The Smith Interior announces her first, exclusive interior design range, the ‘Roar’ collection.

March 2023: Nicola Smith launches her beautiful first collection featuring wallpapers, fabrics, cushions and lampshades through her interiors brand, The Smith Interior.

Having worked as an accomplished tattooist for over twelve years, during 2021 when lockdowns prevented her from working in the tattoo studio, Nicola successfully completed a diploma in Interior Design. This inspired the renovation of her recently bought home and also launched her into the interiors realm on Instagram (@thesmithinterior) where she has an account that focuses on maximalism. Nicola and her home will also be appearing soon on the upcoming brand new Channel 4 programme, Outrageous Homes, hosted by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Smith said: “I’ve spent many years drawing for my work as a tattooist, and even longer enjoying putting together room schemes in my own home. When I had the time during lockdown to complete my interiors diploma I saw another pathway open up and am enjoying exploring that as a new beginning”.

Based in Hampshire, the unique designs are hand drawn and designed. Featuring four gorgeous prints each in four coordinating colourways, the new Roar collection is available on velvet fabric sold by the meter, luxury wallpaper, sumptuous cushions and fabulously fringed lampshades.

Inspired by her love of bright colours and drawing on her many years working as a tattooist, Nicola brings her unique illustrative art to the interiors world.
