Your heart is precious, and so are your memories ‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands. Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could. So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.

Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.

Empty spaces Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.

“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.

Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on trying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions. These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone. This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.

Slowing the tide is just the beginning The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year participants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither. A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.

Let your legacy change the course of history for the better Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia. Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.* Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference. * The research referenced was also supported by the UK Dementia Research Institute.

If you’d like to leave a gift that could save lives, go to bhf.org.uk/mylegacy

These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.

“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.” This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.

F

rom this October visitors to Discover Bucks Museum can explore the cultural landscape of 1980s Britain through the eyes of a child – revisiting the colourful vibrancy and innovation that defined the decade; from Betamax to BMX, the Rubik’s Cube to the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and the Thompson Twins to Transformers. Lovingly curated by collector and cultural commentator Matt Fox, I Grew Up 80s is a time capsule of over 200 treasures that showcase the youthful exuberance of this much-loved decade. There’s plenty for all ages to see, enjoy, share and remember the last decade before the digital revolution. Matt Fox, who was aged eight in 1980, has devoted himself to exploring an 80s childhood through the iconic objects of a decade in which so much changed, says: “Those that grew up 30-40 years ago preinternet, in the 1980s, can genuinely state that life was very different then. In my view, the 80s were a remarkable time to be a child. We can explore that through the objects that kids either owned or perhaps desperately wanted to! For example, you’ll see Dunlop Green Flash trainers alongside some achingly cool Adidas High Tops. Toys and electronic games that you once dreamed about on shop shelves or in the Argos catalogue. Iconic albums you played to death on vinyl and cassette. Chocolate bars and food items, like Sweet

Cigarettes and Peanut Treets, that are no longer with us. Plus, some great examples of 80s design like boomboxes, swatch watches, and, ahem, purple shell suits!” If you were a child, teenager or adult and experienced the 80s get ready to exclaim “I remember that!”, and like Bill and Ted in their phone booth or Marty McFly in his DeLorean, let Discover Bucks Museum take you on a most excellent adventure to revisit the greatest decade in the history of history – the 80s!

CHEF LAURIE GEAR

October recipe & kitchen news

I

could not conceive of October without delicious English Heritage apples, we are very fortunate at the restaurant to have unique access to a local ancient apple orchard full of amazing varieties each with their own characteristic flavour and usage. The apple is such a versatile ingredient and this recipe certainly lends itself to the change in the season with a chill in the air, Halloween and the fizz pop of Bonfire nights just around the corner. A tray full of these baked apples brought outside to a hungry party celebrating the autumn changes make for a welcome treat and is sure to bring a smile to the faces

of your guests both young and old. It was always a staple dish in my mum’s repertoire of seasonal dishes and my wife Jacqueline also inherited a recipe from her mother and now proves to be a favourite with our young daughter! Here I have taken the best from both recipes and included a splash of Somerset apple brandy or though calvados or brandy work equally as well. When it comes to comforting accompaniments there are many for me - it’s thick, velvety custard or Devonshire clotted cream but vanilla ice cream or pouring cream match perfectly!

RECIPE: BAKED STUFFED APPLES WITH DATES, TOASTED OAT, PECANS AND SOMERSET APPLE BRANDY Ingredients - Makes 3 x 340g jars

Method

• 4 good sized cooking apples I use Herrings Pippin but a good Braeburn, Newtown Pippin or Gala work equally as well • 2 oz soft salted butter • 2 tablespoons of dark soft brown sugar • 4 tablespoons oats • 100gr pecan nuts • Zest and juice of a large lemon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder • 60 g dates • 1 tablespoon quality honey • A splash of Somerset apple brandy or calvados

Pre heat oven 180c 1. In a large heavy frying pan melt the butter then toast the oats till golden 2. Add the nuts and toast a little further 3. Add the rest of the ingredients stirring well 4. Bring the ingredients up to heat then remove from the heat 5. Core your apples 6. Stuff the centre of your apples with your oat and nut mixture 7. Place the apples in a heavy shallow dish 8. Bake for around 20 minutes or until the sides of the apples look soft and slightly giving 9. Remove from the oven and serve in bowls with your favourite thick cream or custard to finish and enjoy!

Autumn Tasting Offer With the turning colour of the leaves and the autumn harvest beginning to flow, let’s celebrate the Autumn season together! We invite you to sample our seasonal Lunch Tasting Menu or the Tasting Menu to receive a complimentary glass of our autumnal house made cocktail, Elderberry Martini featuring our rich, velvety elderberry syrup which the kitchen team have hand-picked and lovingly prepared. To receive a complimentary glass of our Elderberry Martini upon arrival, please mention “Autumn Offer” at the time of booking. The Traditional Art of Brewing T

he Tring Brewery Company was founded in 1992, reviving the traditional art of brewing in the picturesque West Hertfordshire market town of Tring. This was a town that, although steeped in brewing history, had been without a brewery for over 50 years. The locals were thirsty. Founder, Richard Shardlow, an experienced brewer having worked for Greene King, Ruddles and Devenish got the show on the road and was joined in 2000 by Andrew Jackson from Whitbread, a man armed with both a brewing and retail background… and a scruffy dog. To this day Richard and Andrew head up a dynamic team of staff, dedicated to ensuring the highest levels of product quality and service. Whether you are a first time visitor to our brewery shop or a long standing trade customer, we are always here to help, advise and meet your requirements. When it comes to crafting our beers, we start with the finest UK barley… tonnes of it. Each grain milled on site to extract colour, flavour and aroma. Hops are

meticulously sourced from all around the world, each one selected for the unique character it brings to a beer. Our beautiful water, filtered through the chalk of the surrounding Chiltern Hills acts as the perfect carrier, delivering with it an array of sensory pleasures. Of course there’s no forgetting our yeast. Millions of tiny little cells work exceptionally hard to produce alcohol, natural condition and that signature Tring flavour profile. The sum of many parts, lovingly combined for you to enjoy. There’s more to us than beer though. Without the support of our local customer base the brewery would not have grown as it has. This connection to Tring extends through the company with most of the staff living in the town. It’s for this reason that you’ll find us constantly engaging with the community. Through collaborations with local businesses to help promote regional awareness, supporting events, sports clubs and charities, we like to get involved. It’s the least we could do.

Personalised Teaching Professionally Delivered

T

otal Tutoring provides quality tuition through qualified and experienced teachers. We believe that by handpicking our tutors, your child receives the highest quality tuition based on years of training and classroom practice. We ensure that each of our tutors has qualified teacher status and has an enhanced DBS check for your peace of mind, but most importantly, they are fun and motivating with a passion for quality learning. We ensure tutors have relevant curriculum knowledge and teaching experience to support children’s learning in preparing children for examinations and helping with challenging learning topics. Our pupils’ and parents’ reviews reflect our quality and attention to the needs of each individual child. Total Tutoring was established in 2016 by teachers who are passionate about children reaching their potential and wanted to be able to offer more than the classroom environment provided.

46 OCTOBER 2023

Having spent many years in both private and state school classrooms, we saw children who despite the best efforts of teaching staff, were getting lost in the system and needed more specific attention. Our idea was to facilitate this through the highest quality tuition, professionally delivered by qualified and experienced teachers. We help children take bold steps in learning, embrace challenge and having the confidence to work outside their comfort zones. Children like to feel successful, we praise each step towards the child’s goal. We believe in giving children the tools, techniques and experience to achieve their potential. Founding tutor, Vicky Collins, has been a teacher in local schools and is a mother of four. This gives her an interesting perspective of the emotional on the emotional journey through education. “Family life is always about compromise, education is very important, but so are music lessons, sports teams, clubs and time to relax. It is important that we work with each pupil to achieve the best balance for the individual.” We teach both small groups (with a maximum of 4 pupils) and bespoke individual lessons. We have a peaceful classroom where our face to face lessons take place and offer online lessons for students. Online has grown in popularity as parents realise that their child receives the same high quality attention and learning with simple logistics. We offer trial lessons for you and your child to experience our high quality tuition. Talk to us today about how we can help your child succeed.

“Our ethos is to only use qualified and handpicked teachers as tutors, individuals with our values and passion for quality tuition”

Do you know your EPAs from your LPAs?

B

P Collins’ wills, trust and probate team explains the key differences between an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) and Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and advises on any further action a donor – the person who is making one – or an attorney may need to take, to avoid being caught out in the future. Up until 1st October 2007, Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPA) could be made, which enabled a donor to choose someone who they trusted, to look after their financial and property affairs, if they lost capacity. EPAs still remain valid today. However, they do not cover health and welfare decisions, which is why, in 2005, two different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) were introduced – property and financial LPAs and health and welfare LPAs. Therefore, if a donor made an EPA but would now like to choose someone to make care decisions on their behalf should they lose the ability to do so, they would also need to make a new health and welfare LPA.

“It is vital that anybody looking to create an LPA or register an EPA should seek expert legal advice before doing so. B P Collins can assist with all applications to ensure they are executed efficiently and correctly.”

Registration requirements After an EPA was signed, it could be used immediately. Registration with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) was, and still is, only required once the donor loses capacity. However,

not only does the registration of an old-style EPA require a minimum of three family members to be notified, it typically takes a minimum of 10 weeks to register – or longer if a family member objects – once the application is submitted. This could be quite a stressful process for an attorney at an already anxious time, particularly if they are caring for the donor. In comparison, an LPA must be registered with the OPG before it can be used. Although this can typically take a minimum of 10 weeks, it may be at a less difficult time as the donor still has full capacity. Also, if the donor begins to lose the ability to make their own decisions, there is no need to notify family members or the OPG, if the LPA has already been registered. It is vital that anybody looking to create an LPA or register an EPA should seek expert legal advice before doing so. While many people might consider the task too time-consuming or expensive, it would be wise to think seriously about the security the power might provide you. If a loved one loses capacity and a power of attorney is not in place, an application to the Court will need to be made for someone to be appointed as their Deputy. B P Collins can assist with all applications to ensure they are executed efficiently and correctly.

LONDON WATCH THEFTS THE DETAILS Get in touch for a quote, visit westminstersecurity.co.uk or call 0207 123 4544

U

nfortunately, London has become the epicentre of a watch theft epidemic where violent and often armed assailants are mugging unsuspecting luxury watch owners in the streets for their expensive timepieces. In 2022 there were over 6,000 reported watch thefts in London with an average value of £9,000, around £54m worth stolen last year alone. And 2023 is shaping up to be much worse. So, what can you do to protect yourself in these testing times? We spoke to John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd, a world-leading personal protection company based in central London. John said: “Sadly, this is the world we now live in. Watch theft is more lucrative than other crimes and there is little deterrent

Professionals in protection. Always on Guard.

to street gangs…there are spotters at luxury retailers, high-end bars, and restaurants preying on vulnerable watch owners. The obvious deterrent is to leave your watch at home in a safe, or even wear a replica and freely hand it over if attacked. However, if you insist on wearing your luxury watch you must realise you are making yourself a target.” John advised: “Don’t get too intoxicated, don’t trust a stranger who is suddenly taking a lot of interest in befriending you, don’t walk alone, and always remain aware of your surroundings. If followed, run for help if you can, if attacked hand over your watch it is not worth dying for. Make sure your watch is insured and have it valued each year.” How can Westminster Security help? “We provide discreet close protection operatives (bodyguards) to accompany or shadow our clients on nights out, watching their backs and those around them; for us, it is second nature spotting undesirables up to no good. We have thwarted many potential situations, and not always directly for our clients but their friends, colleagues, and other venue patrons.” How much does a bodyguard cost? “Some clients spend several hundred or thousands on a bottle of champagne on a night out, we are not that expensive but if you can afford a luxury lifestyle it is worth paying for peace of mind”.

Key things to consider when choosing your Lasting Power of Attorney grants someone authority over your finances, and Health and Welfare LPA, which empowers someone to make decisions regarding your healthcare and personal welfare. UK law specifies that the person chosen as your LPA must be at least 18 years old and have the mental capacity to make informed decisions. Key things to consider Trustworthiness and reliability: Your chosen LPA should be someone you trust, as they will have access to your financial and personal information. Consider their ability to act in your best interests.

When it comes to planning ahead for the future, one important decision you need to make is choosing your Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). Under UK law, an LPA is an essential legal document that grants someone the authority to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so. Wills, Trusts and Probate Partner, Minesh Thakrar, from Blaser Mills Law outlines key things to consider when appointing your LPA. Before delving into the process, it’s crucial to understand the concept of the Lasting Power of Attorney. There are two types: Property and Financial Affairs LPA, which

Availability: Select someone who is local to you, as they may need to visit you regularly, attend meetings on your behalf, or manage your affairs in person. Accessibility is crucial for a smooth decision-making process. Compatibility: Ensure your LPA understands your values, beliefs, and preferences regarding healthcare and financial matters. They should be able to make decisions that align with your wishes when you cannot express them yourself. Financial responsibility: If appointing an LPA for property and financial affairs, choose someone with good financial responsibility. They should be capable of managing your assets, paying bills, and making informed financial decisions in your best interests. Communication skills: Effective communication is vital between you, your LPA, and other parties involved. Select an individual who can effectively convey your wishes and instructions to medical professionals, financial institutions, and family members.

Seeking legal advice We advise to seek advice from a legal professional when creating an LPA. Solicitors specialising in Wills, Trusts and Probate can offer valuable guidance throughout the process. They will help you complete the appropriate forms, clarify legal terms, and ensure the document is properly executed.

About Minesh Thakrar Minesh is a Partner and heads up the Blaser Mills Law Amersham office. He undertakes a full range of private client work, including the preparation of Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Enduring Powers of Attorney, issues affecting the elderly, inheritance tax mitigation and probate and the administration of estates.

How Blaser Mills Law can help At Blaser Mills Law we understand the importance of putting the right planning in place for the future. Our team of Wills, Trusts and Probate solicitors are experts in the field and work with clients to find the best solutions for them and their families.

Minesh takes a calm and pragmatic approach to his practice, ensuring that his clients are assured and confident throughout the process. Both his written and verbal communications are clear, and clients often comment on his ability to deliver information concisely and with clarity.

THE CHAPLINS SHELF-HELP GUIDE:

7 styling secrets to boost your bookcase

F

rom the floating to the freestanding, the room dividing to the flush-againstthe-wall, despite their light framework and generally slimline designs, shelving systems and bookcases are hugely impactful pieces of furniture, well worth putting some time and thought into. Modern homes have become less about pure good looks and more about the art of telling stories and creating personal narratives – now’s the time to gather the objects that mean the most to you and put them where you can feel their positivity every day. New shelves are a great opportunity to browse the house and compose a new collection combining the items you find within. There are no rules regarding what you put on display. Large, small, old, new, useful, decorative, colourful, muted, hand crafted, machined… bring it all together and start from there. The first thing to do, whether you’re working with a box-fresh new piece of storage or refreshing something existing, is to start from scratch: empty it. There’s no other way. Once you have a blank slate, then the decisions begin. What’s the shelf for? Practical storage, or a beautiful, decorative addition to the room? Is it about aesthetics, or expression? What type of atmosphere do you want to create? Set the mood layer by layer, ledge by ledge with our professional styling methods and strategies to create a contemporary shelving display, and artfully showcase everything from treasured collections and works of art to plants, books and beyond.

MIX MATERIALS AND TEXTURES Melding different textures and materials on the shelf top, from paper to ceramics, wood, glass and metal, adds a pleasing element of contrast to a space – either place objects on the shelves that juxtapose each other to create interest, or have the whole shelving system differing from the room itself for larger impact and to make the shelf a standout design feature. Texture – the more tactile the better – also brings a warm and cosy feel, and 80 OCTOBER 2023

placing high contrast surfaces side by side (say, a high gloss finish next to a rough ceramic) ups visual appeal and intrigue.

INTRODUCE ILLUMINATION Using shelving with built-in lighting, or including a free-standing light on a shelf has many more pros other than simply increasing visibility. Lighting adds depth and dimension, cultivating visual interest while emphasizing the threedimensional nature of the structure. As well as creating ambiance – warm tones equal cosiness, cool coloured bulbs are energetic. Lights can also draw focus to certain pieces so they stand out, and make collections looks even more impressive – and when turned off, built-in lighting becomes invisible while lamps become beautiful sculptures.

STRIKE A BALANCE When putting your shelving arrangement together, it’s important to bear balance and proportion

TELL YOUR TALE

in mind – carefully considering the layout and placement of items will make it easier for your collection to harmonise. For a modern, diverse feel, play with scale and emphasize variety (rather than grouping similar styles together), varying the heights, sizes, shapes and materials on each level and across the width of every shelf – aim for casual asymmetry. Generally, larger objects are happiest on the lower section of the shelves, with the lighter and smaller pieces up top – but don’t be afraid to break this rule every now and then for a freer and more contemporary aesthetic.

MASTER THE MINIMALIST MINDSET A sparsely populated shelf speaks of curation and confidence, and decorating with a small number of favourite objects turns all the attention to them as refined focal points. While it’s tempting to fill a shelf with beloved items (or unconsciously add to the collection here and there), going for a reduced, minimalist selection lets each piece standout and shine, turning the shelves into a chic, composed selection. Each object has enough space to breathe, and becomes more meaningful and respected by the room afforded to it.

Shelving is the ideal space to showcase who you are through the objects that narrate your life. As well as visibly sharing your story, personality, interests and experiences with visitors, placing personal mementoes on show has a deeper effect too; being surrounded by memories evokes nostalgia and positive emotions, creating an ambiance that’s emotionally rich, uplifting and positive. Sentimental items are reminders of experiences, people and achievements – keeping them visible preserves those memories, fostering a home environment that feels warm and that you’re strongly connected to.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT We all get a little bored with our decor, and shelving’s inherent flexibility means that it’s as easy as lifting-up and placing-down to refresh a wall and the atmosphere of the whole room. Objects can be rotated, swapped out or updated in an instant. Taste changed? New season? Things getting cluttered? It’s no problem on the shelf, the controlled spacing so naturally lending itself to neatness and organisation. Having an ever-evolving collection on show keeps the display dynamic unexpected and endlessly appealing, keeps the space fresh and aligns the area with who you are and how you want to express yourself. chaplins.co.uk

LET CREATIVITY FLOW When are shelves not shelves? When they’re a mini, in-house, private art gallery. Shelving is the place for creative collections – from paintings, prints and photography to sculptures and beautiful, beguiling objets, shelving offers the opportunity for organised, easy curation and display. An art-filled shelf not only prompts meaningful conversations, but is an outlet for self-expression, the display reflecting your personal style, individuality and making the space truly unique – and bringing a daily dose of delight. Origin Do It All

W

hen the Langley’s first thought about getting an indoor pool, they knew they wanted to use it daily for exercise as they both love swimming however, space was an issue as well as the possibility of moving in the future so they held off until finding their dream home. “We had already done a lot of research during our original search for indoor pool builders, so when we finally decided to go for it we knew that Origin were the company for us. They had great references, some amazing photos and we liked what we read about them on their website and in the press.”

THE VISION “Origin took care of all the planning, having professionals handle this was key for us as they knew the process and requirements to achieve the best result. It was pretty straightforward and Origin provided everything, removing any potential risks or challenges along the way.” 84 OCTOBER 2023

Originally, the Langleys wanted the pool house to be parallel with the existing property boundary, however, due to some potential challenges with the groundworks, Origin needed a creative solution. The Langley’s were also having stable block built, so Origin proposed the idea of an ‘L’ shape layout for the two buildings, creating a courtyard in the middle and multiple viewpoints from the pool house.

THE DESIGN During the design stages, Origin arranged for the Langleys to visit a variety of recently finished projects that could provide some inspiration for the style and atmosphere they were looking for. “Visiting previous projects was invaluable, it gave us a much clearer idea of the size of pool we wanted. We also loved seeing how previous clients had chosen to designate space for lounge areas, bars and kitchens, it definitely provided us with some inspiration on how we wanted to balance the space in our pool house.”

SCAN TO VIEW THE PROJECT VIDEO

In terms of design, the end goal was to create a restful space. Origin’s design team helped the Langley’s pick the right finishes to achieve this look, especially when it came to the pool tiles. “We didn’t want the water to look ‘too blue’, we were inspired by a past project we had visited and loved the way the more natural coloured tile changed the overall look of the water, transforming it into a restful and relaxing shade of turquoise. The design part of the process was probably one of our favourite parts, seeing how Origin took our ideas and bought them to life while incorporating their own thoughts was really interesting.” When it came to heating the pool, Origin wanted to give the Langley’s as many options as possible and knew that renewable energy would be high on their list of considerations due to the fact that a ground source heat pump provides heating to the main house. “Origin were great at laying out all the options and costs, although we decided on the air source heat pump we did get an LPG tank fitted as a back up for the pool in the winter and solar panels fitted elsewhere in the garden to provide electricity for both the main house and pool house as we did want to be as environmentally conscious as possible.”

We knew from the start that we wanted one company who would handle everything and handle it well, that’s what set Origin apart. The fact that Origin also deal with the maintenance of their projects shows that they care, not just about their pools but their clients as well.” “Origin had great lines of communication, the project was managed well and monthly meetings helped continually alleviate stress and kept us in the loop as we knew what was going to happen and when. Like most people, we’ve had some bad experience with builders in the past so it was very noticeable just how much better Origin were. They constantly showed and used their expertise to guide us, especially when it came to aspects of the build we were unsure on.”

THE RESULT “Our daily routines have changed for the better since having the pool, even when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed we’re straight in the pool and getting those endorphins pumping!” “There’s nothing that we wish we did differently, a few things ended up changing along the way - like the positioning of the pool house and design of the roof structure but it ultimately all worked out and in our favour.” “What advice would we give to prospective pool owners? Use Origin! Seriously though, look at previous projects and talk to previous clients, use a company with extensive experience - Origin offer all of this and more.”

SIMPLY THE BEST “The main thing that stuck out throughout the whole process was just how well the project was managed. Everyone knew exactly what they were supposed to be doing and did it to a high standard, we had confidence in the team throughout the entire build.” “Being in business myself, I know what a nightmare it can be liaising with different companies and dealing with the headache of it all. The most commonly asked bathroom questions With bathroom design specialist Ripples.

W

ith over 35 years experience designing bathrooms, the team at Ripples understands that the process can sometimes be daunting. Its designers are experts on all aspects of bathrooms and here, Senior Designer Alfie Guard from Ripples Beaconsfield showroom answers some of the most commonly asked bathroomrelated questions. Q: With Pinterest, Instagram, and other great tools, can’t I just design my bathroom myself ? Do I really need a bathroom designer? A: Considerations around plumbing, electrics and room layout are best handled by a professional. A Ripples designer can work with you to narrow down your choices, incorporating your inspiration into one cohesive scheme. Designers can also take the stress out of sourcing all of the product for your space, using their specialist knowledge to find the products which will work best for you. Q: What lighting do I need in a bathroom? A: The first level of lighting needed for all bathrooms will be either downlights or a central light. The next level of lighting is task lighting. This could include lighting within your mirror or wall lights either side of the mirror. Wherever possible, go for side rather than top lighting

to give a good overall lighting with minimal shadows. The next level of lighting to consider is mood lighting. Low level lighting is key in a bathroom especially one with a bath or in an en-suite. This can be incorporated in soft spot lighting or strip lighting on top of recesses, by a bath or underneath a vanity unit. Having this on a separate switch means early mornings, late nights and even any middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom are not disturbed by bright lights coming on. In a family bathroom, you may also want to consider a PIR (passive infrared) sensor. As children get older, they can then go into the bathroom at night on their own and lights will automatically come on. Visit Ripples Beaconsfield at 25 Mayflower Way, Beaconsfield, HP9 1UG, head to ripplesbathrooms.com or call 01494 927411 for more information.

AUTUMN IS NATURE’S PLANTING SEASON

I

t really is the best time to get planting. The soil temperature is at its peak after the summer sun which creates the perfect environment for root growth. With additional moisture from autumn rain, plants and trees use the autumn months to get established before winter sets in. This is good news for the gardener as it means watering isn’t as necessary as the drier months in spring and summer. Herbaceous perennials might look a little worse for wear at this time of the year but plant them now and they will reward you next year with very little effort. The autumn is also the perfect time for planting fruit, both soft fruit (including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb) and fruit trees (such as apples, pears, plums and cherries). If you need help and advice choosing trees and plants for your outdoor space, Stubbings is a great place to call or visit.
