Aglorious day out on the golf course watching the future stars of ladies golf complemented by a delicious dining experience at the awardwinning Auberge du Lac is on offer at Brocket Hall in September when the Hertfordshire club hosts the Rose Ladies Open, hosted by golfing superstar Justin Rose and his wife, Kate.
Following the success of the inaugural
tournament last year, Brocket Hall will stage one of the foremost events on the Ladies European Tour Access Series from September 7 to 9. The tournament boasts the largest prize fund on the Access Series this year. What’s more, tickets are completely free, just register online at roseladiesopen.co.uk.
The field of 108 players will include defending champion, My Leander, as well as Tour rookie, Emily Price from England and Denmark’s Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen as well as local player, Sophia Fullbrook, the current Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Champion.
During the 54-hole strokeplay competition, played over the par-72 Melbourne Course, one of two championship courses at Brocket Hall, from Thursday, September 7 to Saturday, September 9, a range of hospitality offerings and public facilities will be open.
“Auberge’s head chef, John Barber sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden”
The tournament will be preceded by a Celebrity ProAm on Wednesday, September 6, which will give everyone a chance to spot a few stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment as well as the pros themselves.
After following the action out on the course, spectators can indulge in a luscious lunch prepared by the Auberge’s head chef, John Barber, who sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden and local suppliers to create a seasonal, modern British cuisine.
In addition to watching golf, there will be the opportunity to try out the game of golf thanks to The Golf Foundation who will be on hand for everyone to have a go at putting and hitting some balls. Children are more than welcome and the day is an excellent way of introducing them to the game and perhaps firing a lifelong interest in playing golf.
The Melbourne Course is one of England’s most picturesque championship courses with
its stunning views over the property’s glorious stately home and lake which is straddled by the magnificent Paine Bridge and its acres of rolling 18th century parkland.
There is no doubt that the demanding layout will provide the players with a testy challenge thanks to host of water hazards (it crosses the River Lea on no less than four occasions!), hanging fairway lies and sloping greens that will force the players to think about each and every shot. Its memorable finish in front of the Hall itself after a short ferry ride to the 18th green will no doubt add drama to the action right down to the very last hole!
In addition to top level hospitality at the Auberge du Lac, Brocket Hall is offering hospitality packages from £66 per person as well as various other food options. The venue is easily accessible – and just 22 miles from the centre of London – and will provide free on-site parking.

Discover Auberge du Lac, the newly reopened lakeside restaurant in the spectacular grounds of Brocket Hall, a Hertfordshire stately home.
Set in the estate’s historic former hunting lodge, the atmospheric venue – with its idyllic terrace – is a wonderful setting with warmth and charm that has been a foodie destination for many years.
Continuing its story is Head Chef John Barber who joins the illustrious line-up of talented chefs in its history, including Phil Thompson and JeanChristophe Novelli.
At just 32 years old, John Barber has already
enjoyed an incredible career. Following an intensive apprenticeship at The Mandarin Hotel Group in London and Thailand, stints abroad in Paris with famed chef, Charcutier Gilles Verot, and New York at Bar Boulud, Café Boulud & Boulud Sud, John joined D&D Group and opened 14 Hills at 120 Fenchurch Street, London.
The opportunity to put Auberge du Lac back on the map following a three-year closure, has seen John relocate to Hertfordshire with his young family to start an exciting new chapter.
With his pedigree and passion, this young talent is creating a whole new dining experience
for guests. His vision? To make fine dining more accessible and relaxed, without any compromise on quality or taste.
Working closely with kitchen gardener, Lucy Hawkins, John is focused on sustainability and seasonality to enhance his modern British menu. Since joining the estate in May 2022, Lucy has transformed a one-acre site - using the no-dig method - into a fertile garden which is starting to supply Auberge with fresh produce all year round and support local biodiversity.
Dishes created by John make best use of her seasonal crops which are literally growing within metres of the tables where they will be served. This is soil-to-plate dining at its best.
As well as the exceptional la carte menu, there is a set weekly lunch menu, a seven-course tasting menu and weekly specials, allowing John to introduce more seasonal produce.
Considerate of the pressures of kitchen life and the wellbeing of his staff, John is an Ambassador for The Burnt Chef project which supports those in the hospitality industry with mental health issues. To support this cause, an optional discretionary £1 is added to the bill.
Auberge du Lac
Highlights from the a la carte menu include dishes such as Sea Bass Ceviche, Duck Liver Parfait, Brill fillet on the bone, clams, Scottish girolles and Welsh Lamb, confit tomatoes, black olive tapenade.
All diners, whatever menu they choose, start with a Welcome Snack and wherever possible everything is made on-site including the bread and butter.
On Sundays, a three-course roast is served with all the trimmings and children’s portions are also available, making this magical restaurant more accessible for families.
Head chef John Barber isn’t alone. He has assembled a whole new team of talents together, including pastry Chef, Ariana Machado who learnt her craft at iconic London brasserie, The Wolseley. With traditional techniques and innovative recipes, Ariana is creating the most delicate and delicious desserts to complement John’s menus.
Front of house, it is Scott Foster who ensures that the drinks, atmosphere, and service, match the excellence of John Barber’s menu.
With a wealth of experience in luxury hospitality including running operations for The Galvin Brothers, a warm welcome awaits all guests, old and new.
SSince reopening in April, this driven and visionary chef is fast establishing Auberge du lac as a destination restaurant once again. With regularly changing menus and a more relaxed vibe, it is certainly somewhere you will want to visit for the great food and great service in an amazing setting on a regular basis, not just on special occasions!

With the introduction of no-fault divorce in 2022, it may seem that getting a divorce is now a simple process with little assistance required. However, ‘quickie’ divorces offered by some firms and websites are to be investigated by the Competition and Markets Authority after receiving complaints about misleading claims relating to the simplicity of the process and prices, leaving many people uncertain about what they could get help with or what they were paying for. The CMA also received complaints about having an “inadequate quality of service,” such as firms using the wrong forms, entering incorrect details and sending papers to the court late. James Carter, family associate at B P Collins advises.
The removal of the need to set out the behaviour, which has caused the marriage to come to an end, and instead proceed on a no-fault basis, means that the applying party simply needs to declare that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without the requirement for particulars. The reasons for defending the divorce have also been limited and now focuses on jurisdictional issues rather than disagreements about the facts.
On the face of it, your divorce may seem straightforward, but things can often change as the divorce progresses. There are also a number of issues that should be dealt with during the divorce process, which is why it is best to seek specialist legal advice at the outset.
It is advisable that finances are settled at the time of divorce. This can include back and forth discussions
between the parties, with a view to reaching an agreement away from court which both are satisfied with. There is usually a need for financial disclosure so that an accurate representation of each party’s jointly and separately owned assets can be considered and a fair settlement is reached.
Reaching an agreement in respect of financial matters can often be complicated and the involvement of a specialist family lawyer can bring a clearer perspective to negotiations, and ensure that divorce and financial matters are dealt with in coherence.
During the divorce process, disputes may arise in respect of issues surrounding how much time the children spend with each parent, handovers, and so on. It is essential to always put the needs of the child first, and therefore, correspondence between solicitors can often result in formal arrangements being agreed in writing.
It is, therefore, always advisable to obtain legal advice from a specialist family lawyer at the earliest opportunity to discuss your options and be given with all of the information you need.
If you’re thinking about divorce, please contact B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995.

Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.
So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.
Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.
Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close
protection operatives do not spend each day toe-to-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence.
With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.
Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.

grants someone authority over your finances, and Health and Welfare LPA, which empowers someone to make decisions regarding your healthcare and personal welfare. UK law specifies that the person chosen as your LPA must be at least 18 years old and have the mental capacity to make informed decisions.
Key things to consider
Trustworthiness and reliability:
Your chosen LPA should be someone you trust, as they will have access to your financial and personal information. Consider their ability to act in your best interests.
Availability:
When it comes to planning ahead for the future, one important decision you need to make is choosing your Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). Under UK law, an LPA is an essential legal document that grants someone the authority to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so.
Wills, Trusts and Probate Partner, Minesh Thakrar, from Blaser Mills Law outlines key things to consider when appointing your LPA.
Before delving into the process, it’s crucial to understand the concept of the Lasting Power of Attorney. There are two types: Property and Financial Affairs LPA, which
Select someone who is local to you, as they may need to visit you regularly, attend meetings on your behalf, or manage your affairs in person. Accessibility is crucial for a smooth decision-making process.
Compatibility:
Ensure your LPA understands your values, beliefs, and preferences regarding healthcare and financial matters. They should be able to make decisions that align with your wishes when you cannot express them yourself.
Financial responsibility:
If appointing an LPA for property and financial affairs, choose someone with good financial responsibility. They should be capable of managing your assets, paying bills, and making informed financial decisions in your best interests.
Communication skills:
Effective communication is vital between you, your LPA, and other parties involved. Select an individual who can effectively convey your wishes and instructions to medical professionals, financial institutions, and family members.
We advise to seek advice from a legal professional when creating an LPA. Solicitors specialising in Wills, Trusts and Probate can offer valuable guidance throughout the process. They will help you complete the appropriate forms, clarify legal terms, and ensure the document is properly executed.
At Blaser Mills Law we understand the importance of putting the right planning in place for the future. Our team of Wills, Trusts and Probate solicitors are experts in the field and work with clients to find the best solutions for them and their families.

SEPTEMBER 2023
THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA
An exciting year of celebration, change and development has begun at our local Independent School, Thorpe House in the heart of Gerrards Cross. Whilst September sees a Centenary Gala to celebrate the school’s 100th year, there will be the addition of a co-educational Sixth Form offering young men and women first class teaching with an emphasis on academic achievement, the development of key life skills, leadership and exploration, extended pastoral care, and bespoke university and careers guidance.
Whilst this is a new provision opening in September 2024, Thorpe House has a long tradition of excellence in challenging and supporting each individual student to develop their unique talents and passions; and to go on to achieve success in their chosen field.
It’s your choice. It’s our expertise.
Our pioneering curriculum is shaped each year around you, allowing you to delve deeper into the subjects that truly captivate your mind and align with your future goals.
Not only will Thorpe’s new Sixth Form be based in an iconic building on Gerrards Cross High Street, freshly refurbished to provide outstanding connectivity, technology, teaching resources, study
facility and great aesthetics, the Sixth Form will also welcome girls for the first time in the school’s 100 year history. This provides a wonderful new opportunity for the town, and its first students to be the pioneers of the new provision, and set that high standard for the generations to come.
It’s your time. It’s our commitment.
Thorpe and its Headteacher Mr Jake Burnett, are keen to highlight that in setting up the new Sixth Form, the focus will be on providing the very best opportunities for each of our individual students, which will mean an outstanding Sixth Form for all, including for the local community. The key will be around tailoring a bespoke curriculum that meets the needs of students, so that aspiration can be enhanced, horizons broadened, achievements successfully accomplished, and futures realised. He added,
“We will make sure that we provide the pioneering curriculum, life skills, pastoral care and university and career guidance that every one of our children deserves, so that they can take the lead and explore their interests with curiosity. Our Sixth Formers will be challenged and supported to blaze their trail, with the freedom to innovate and grow confidently.”
It’s your life. It’s our experiences. Enrichment opportunities abound as we provide you with the freedom and experiences to extend your learning, develop key life skills and explore your interests with curiosity and confidence.
It’s your future. It’s our guidance. Advice and guidance on career opportunities, and next steps including universities, apprenticeships, applications and UCAS, will be targeted around the needs of the individual students over the two years in Thorpe House Sixth Form. There will be a number of opportunities over the next few months for students, parents and the local community to find out more about this exciting Sixth Form. The recently appointed Head of Sixth Form, Mr Simon McCallion, commented that there will be myriad opportunities to find out, “Whether through our Sixth Form Open Evening, our Social Media presence or through other opportunities, there will be lots of ways to find out more about this unique and local offer of excellence in Thorpe House Sixth Form.” He was keen to add that he is most excited to meet the future students and tailor that 16-18 provision around them, “I am really looking forward to getting to discussing with current Year 10s and 11s about what they would need in this Sixth Form; to say to them, ‘It’s your life, your future, and your choice! It’s your time!’ I am confident that when our new students make that choice, it will be Thorpe House Sixth Form, for the full range of provision, and exciting opportunities we will offer.”
Mr Burnett and Mr McCallion highlighted that this Sixth Form will be very much part of the local community. With the Sixth Form site a ten minute walk from the Oval Way main buildings, Thorpe’s Sixth Formers will be visible on the High Street and engaging with local businesses, charities and wider community. Having been such a presence in the town for a century, this new dimension to Thorpe will provide the platform for great achievements for the school in the town and for Gerrards Cross for the next century!
Thus, whether you, or someone you know is thinking about the best place to further their study at A-Levels, whatever future and aspiration awaits:entrepreneur, scientist, performer, mathematician, public speaker, sporting champion or Duke of Edinburgh Gold candidate, have a look at what Gerrards Cross’s local independent school has to offer.
It’s your voice. It’s our belief. We believe you play an important part in the running of the Sixth Form and are integral to helping it grow. We encourage you to take the lead and have a voice - in doing so you will develop leadership skills and qualities that will serve you well in the future.

Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.”
Danielle Desouza discovers how to inspire girls within the realms of science, technology, engineering and maths.
When you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert.
But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing.
Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…
Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop. org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says.
It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.”
“I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’”
As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field –but there are plenty of networks that can help.
Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry.
You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists.
Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in. “I managed to get a week of work
experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.
Encourage curiosity from a young age
Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.”
Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.”
Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists.
If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

Transitioning to Secondary School can be a daunting time. At St Mary’s School, Gerrards Cross, the aim is to make the transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible for students and parents alike. By the time they join us, each student is a familiar individual to the staff at St Mary’s allowing them to receive the right level of support and challenge for them.
The transition process at St Mary’s is full of opportunities and activities for students to familiarise themselves with the school, understand and be excited for the opportunities on offer and give them reassurance that there is support for their wellbeing and how they can access it. By the time each student joins, she will feel happy and comfortable going to school, be familiar with the school layout, recognize key members of staff, be familiar with her peers and feel confident making friends. Great value is placed the transition programme – it is an important process and ensures that every family feels that they are welcome and part of the extended family at St Mary’s from the time they accept an offer. Transition is something which the whole school community gets involved with – Senior House ambassadors help at events, Sixth Form Transition Prefects offer continuous support and current Year 7s take great pleasure and care in showing their younger peers their school.
The Transition Programme at St Mary’s, Gerrards Cross, is comprehensive and varied and starts at the point an offer is made – this allows a consistent programme of opportunities for the 8 months leading up to students joining in the
September. Activities range from Zoom Calls, Breakfast Meetings at school, Open Events, a Transition Day (where students meet their tutors and find out their house!), a personalized postcard from a current Year 7, and ends with a Welcome Week at the end of the Summer Holidays. The Welcome Week is a busy 3 days which includes taster sessions in subjects students might not have experienced at Primary or Prep School. The ultimate aim of all these activities is for girls joining Year 7 to have fun, find people with

common interests, and find their feet in their new setting so that September simply can’t come quick enough for them.
Once in Year 7, girls are surrounded by support and activities to help them settle into school life and new routines. Their first year is a hive of activity and team building days to instill positive relationships and to support girls in makings friends who will last a lifetime! Some of the highlights of the current Year 7 have been their Enterprise Day, PACCAR Team Building Day, and a trip to Whipsnade Zoo at the end of the exam week not to mention the countless CoCurricular Clubs on offer to build confidence and learn new skills – everything from Boxing and Tennis to Crochet and Rock Band. Year 7 have also taken centre stage in the school performance of We Will Rock You and represented St Mary’s at a range of sports fixtures in the local area. They have not only turned their hand to new activities but also pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and grown in confidence daily – their St Mary’s Spirit is shining through already!
St Mary’s School puts great emphasis on transition at each entry point, whether that’s Nursery and Reception, a year group in Prep, Year 7 or Year 12. Each experience is tailored to the relevant age. Nursery and Reception enjoy a number of short sessions which involve parents and students with the focus being on familiarity of surroundings and staff. At Year 12, when girls join us, there is an extended induction period which
includes the whole of the Sixth Form so that key relationships can be built with teachers and peers – these provide the grounding for an incredible Sixth Form experience for all!
We would love to meet you and talk more about transition and life at St Mary’s. Why not join our Open Day on 7th October to explore St Mary’s and all it has to offer. Register your interest here: stmarysschool.co.uk/open-days/

What is education for, if not to prepare our children for the world they will inherit?
The World Economic Forum has identified the ten biggest global challenges facing humanity, including Climate Change, Food Security, the 4th Industrial Revolution and Gender Equality. They also identify the top skills that people will need in 2025, including analytical thinking and innovation, complex problem solving and, rather bleakly, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility.
Analysis like this shaped Leighton Park’s future-thinking vision: We exist to form students of real character and confidence, with a determined desire to change the world.
This focus doesn’t come at the expense of a strong, well-balanced education. Leighton Park combines the best academic progress in Berkshire with award-winning personal development and sectorleading pastoral care.
Head, Matthew LS Judd explains: We don’t try to be like other schools. We nurture each young person to really think about who they are and what they want to achieve and we do everything we can to support them to succeed as themselves - true to who they are and all the more remarkable for it. This approach drives us to challenge the status quo and the false dichotomies of Academic versus Pastoral and STEM versus Creative.”
Three of our successful initiatives include:
1. Problem-based learning
Our academic approach to STEAM is all about creative problem solving, combining the analytical skills from STEM subjects with the creative habits of mind from the Arts. Last year 74% of our
Sixth Form leavers went on to STEAM-related degrees including Engineering, Medicine, Architecture and Product Design
2. Future-ready leaders
Leighton Park has won the prestigious ISA Award for Outstanding Community Involvement in 2021 and 2020. Our students gain a wellbeing and resilience boost from helping others, leadership skills and the courage to strive for a fairer society.
3. Environmental awareness
Climate change and biodiversity loss are two issues highlighted within our cross-curricular projects and expansive co-curricular programme. We achieved the coveted Green Flag Award and are shortlisted for Independent School of the Year for Environmental Achievement 2023.
To discover how this unique approach led to Leighton Park being Finalists in the prestigious TES School Awards for Independent Senior School of the Year, come to one of our open days. Book now at www.leightonpark.com/imagine-better.

If your son or daughter is struggling to secure a job after graduating from university, there are several ways you can guide and support them through this challenging process. Here are some key tips to help them improve their job prospects:
Tailor Their CV: Emphasise the importance of crafting a well-tailored CV for each job application. Encourage them to focus on showcasing their key employability skills, qualifications, and relevant experiences rather than just their grades. Also, make sure their CV is compatible with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) used by many companies.
Gain Work Experience: In today’s competitive job market, experience is crucial. Suggest that they seek internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities related to their field of interest to enhance their skills and make their application stand out.
Identify Their Career Path: Encourage your child to reflect on their interests and skills before applying for jobs. Applying randomly without a genuine interest won’t make their applications stand out.
Networking: Remind them of the value of networking. Attend job fairs, industry events, and connect with professionals in their desired fields. Personal connections can often lead to hidden job opportunities.
Craft Tailored Applications: Encourage them to tailor every aspect of their application, showing genuine interest and effort for each role they apply to. Consider offering to review their CV and cover letter before they send out applications.
Online Presence: Help them review and optimise their social media profiles, especially LinkedIn, to project a positive and professional image. Many employers research candidates online, so a clean digital footprint is crucial.
Skill Development: Identify high-demand skills in their chosen industry and encourage them to invest time in acquiring these skills through online courses, workshops, or certifications.
Consider Market Trends: Research job market trends in their chosen field. External factors can play a role, and understanding the industry’s dynamics can help them stay persistent and flexible.
Interview Preparation: Offer to conduct mock interviews and provide constructive feedback. Focus on communication, problem-solving, and presentation skills to boost their interview confidence.

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

re-sized for modern family living, or the gracefully proportioned Kenilworth dining chair with its slim birch frame and chalked oak seat and the compact Ardingly desk that quickly converts into a console. And enveloping the whole season is Neptune’s subtle new paint shade – Potter’s Pink – an earthy hue with the textured look of raw clay and fresh plaster.
With a focus on British design, heritage craft and modern living, Neptune’s new collection is a masterclass in timeless style
As established British furniture designers, based in Wiltshire with over 30 stores around the UK and Europe including a store in Chesham, Neptune values the beauty of natural materials, thoughtful and practical design and sustainable craftsmanship, to create homes that feel both timeless and contemporary.
A case in point is this season’s new collection which marries classic lines with the finest of natural materials to deliver a relaxed yet sophisticated aesthetic. Spanning exquisite oak furniture, rich kilim rugs, brass lighting, and textural accessories, the autumn collection is designed to work in city, town, and country properties. Take the new Stratford table which nods to the clean lines of Mid-Century modern design, and features a uniquely engineered castellated pedestal base, but is re-interpreted and
What unites this and every Neptune collection is a set of core values and an attention to detail that ensures the timber kitchens and carefully curated homeware collections are designed and made to last. Indeed, Neptune’s mission is to create furniture that will last 100 years and beyond, bringing joy to future generations and helping support a sustainable manufacturing approach.
The Neptune vision is reassuringly simple.
1. There is a focus on using natural, organic materials wherever possible, from solid oak for tables to Belgium linen and Harris Tweed for upholstery. MDF and chipboard are never used, instead sustainably sourced timbers and hardwood plywood lend stability and authenticity to the designs.
2. Then there is a spotlight on quality craftsmanship and joinery – learning from the forms and solutions of furniture makers of the past and combining them with the latest innovations in technology and engineering.
3. And finally, there is a commitment to service, both in the excellence of the customer services available, from kitchen and home design services to the Colour Consultancy, and through to the warm welcome customers receive in our stores and the delivery drivers who go that extra mile to help.

Colour – it’s here, and we’re rejoicing! Pigment has taken over the contemporary home, covering surfaces and dancing through rooms with its glorious joy de vivre and power to elevate atmospheres and moods. Be it a chromatic chair, a bright light or a vivid vase, chunks of colour in every size and shade are now permanent fixtures in our spaces, bringing smiles and moments of pure pleasure to life indoors.
But how to work this new kaleidoscopic disposition into our existing aesthetic? We’ve long been building calm, cool, collected minimal interiors, often with a distinctly Scandinavian edge – do our beloved pale woods, worn leathers and calm, forest-inspired hues work with these new flashes of fuchsia, smatterings of scarlet and pops of periwinkle? The answer is yes, yes, a resounding yes – and heritage Danish design brand Fritz Hansen is showing us how to bring the two together while maintaining that characteristic Scandi cool.
Fritz Hansen’s soul-enriching spectrum of shades has been crafted by an expert editorial eye, that
of Italian magazine editor, gallerist, entrepreneur and all-round creative virtuoso Carla Sozzani. The curated 16-piece colour collection features vibrant hues as well as the more tonal, from bold True Yellow and Paradise Orange to soothing Dusk Blue and Pale Rose and rich Venetian Red and Burnt Yellow. Formulated especially for the beloved silhouettes of the Ant, Series 7 and Grand Prix chairs by Danish icon Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Hansen’s hues lead the way in introducing timeless colour to modern, Scandinavia-inspired home tones.
As well as the bold, the Fritz Hansen palette is infused with classic Nordic neutrals that seem touched by nature, such as Deep Clay, Light Beige, Olive Green and Nine Grey. The muted nature-tinted tones slide easily into modern spaces already filled with subdued stony, sandy, snowy and stormy shades, allowing the more pigmented side of the collection to smoothly integrate into the room to build a colourful yet distinctly Scandi interior landscape.
A tip to bringing brightness into the muted Denmark/Stockholm/Oslo/Helsinki-infused homes we’ve so lovingly nurtured? Look to
“As well as the bold, the Fritz Hansen palette is infused with classic Nordic neutrals that seem touched by nature”
the region’s existing accomplishments to move forward. Legendary Scandi design objects have the power to merge classic Nordic style with unexpected colours, effortlessly mixing into contemporary collections with their recognisable, time-honoured forms and creating new technicoloured timelines.
An enduring symbol of mid-century Danish furniture design, the Ant chair was conceived in 1952, its curved seat made from a revolutionary innovation – a single piece of moulded veneer. Now released with an upholstered front shell,
the historic contours have metamorphosed, emerging butterfly-like in radiant shades of textile that add new life to the world-renowned form and pave the way for a pared-back collaboration with the rainbow.
Similarly, the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell lighting collection also harnesses a fresh finish to carry it into the world of colourful contemporary interiors. Created by Christian Dell in 1936, the lights are a symbol of iconic Bauhaus design, their geometric forms, precise engineering and uncluttered style pointing directly to progressive Modernism. Originally available in dark, moody tones, when coated in a cheerful new finish Ruby Red, the lamps become more friendly and accessible – a 2020s spin on 20th century avant-garde. The gravitas and historic significance of the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell easily grant it the authority to invite colour into the home, the enduring icon reflecting ultramodern Nordic sensibilities via a sophisticated splash of scarlet.

Since it was founded more than 70 years ago in the golden age of Danish design, BoConcept has become known for their pared-back furniture that strikes a balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. For AW23, this philosophy manifests throughout their ‘New Kollektion’. But how can these new pieces fit into our homes?
Laying watching a movie, sitting reading a book, sinking into the cushions after a long day...when it comes to selecting a sofa, BoConcept asks, what’s your preferred lounging mode?
“It is very important to know the lifestyle of the customer”, says Lupe Cuervo, BoConcept Interior Stylist. “We always like to discover their tastes, dynamics and habits as a starting point. “For instance, do they have pets? Kids? Will they be entertaining a lot?”
It’s true, a good place to start when you’re thinking about making the investment is, how will I live with this sofa? Then, according to BoConcept’s interior design experts, size, style and comfort levels are the big three considerations.
“To ensure the right size, you have to know the measurements of the space and how many people are going to use the sofa”, says Héctor Velasco, Interior Stylist. Assess the dimensions of your living space and determine the sofa size that will best fit the room. Take into account the layout and consider whether a sectional or modular sofa would be more suitable for your needs.
For comfort, it is a question of “working on the ergonomics because each person is different”, according to Claire Lempereur, Interior Stylist. “Based on the persons’ size, the height and depth of the seat will be important considerations.” The best way to test this is to try the sofas out, according to Stylist David Edwards: “Try out the sofa we have on display and sit on them like you would at home. If you sit with your feet up, do that in the showroom. If you cuddle into the arm of the sofa then sit like this too.”
When it comes to style, Héctor Velasco always asks: “Are you looking for a modern sofa or a classic
one? Do you want a sofa with a specific design in mind?” Then there’s the fun part of choosing colours and fabrics – which should also be chosen with your family’s lifestyle firmly front of mind. Request fabric swatches, too, to see how they feel in your room.
“The material you choose is key, since it will frame the durability of the sofa”, says Velasco. “Do you want a leather sofa or a fabric one? What type of material is best for your needs and lifestyle? For example, if you have pets or small children, you may want to opt for a fabric that is durable and easy to clean.”
Lounge deeply with Salamanca
“Salamanca is very big, very soft and very comfortable. It’s designed not to live with but to live in”, says its designer Henrik Pederson. “There is no strict system to this bohemian style - play around with the cushions, find your favourite position and chill.”
“Laying watching a movie, sitting reading a book, sinking into the cushions after a long day...when it comes to selecting a sofa, BoConcept asks, what’s your preferred lounging mode”
With freestanding or modular versions available, the design also allows for customisation and flexibility with the moveable cushions. So how deep does it go? The super soft seats boast a unit depth of 112cm. Keeping with the ‘ultra comfort’ theme, the cushions create a cocooning effect thanks to their composition of 50% feathers.
Lounge elegantly with Berne
Berne combines clean lines with a timeless design, making it a versatile choice for all tastes. It also comes in three sizes – 2, 2.5 and 3-seater options - so works for large and more compact spaces.
Claire Lempereur recommends it for smaller living spaces: “It is a light sofa with simple and elegant lines. Its depth of 85cm allows it to adapt to small spaces”.
As for its lounge-factor, David Edwards recommends Berne for those seeking “a more formal seating position with the straight-ish back design”, he says. “Use low rectangular cushions on the base of your back for added seating comfort.”
Lounge socially with Carmo
With its bold cubic shape and generous proportions, the Carmo sofa exudes modern elegance. Don’t be fooled by the straight lines, this sofa is a dream to sit on, too.
Perfectly suited to open-plan living, the open end creates a welcoming atmosphere. The flexibility with the modular units means added comfort too.
“You can lounge on the Carmo with the help of the reclining module, have a chaise or add a footstool to the design”, advises David Edwards. Put your feet up, stretch out or use it as an extra seat – you won’t be sorry for choosing this comfortable chaise longue sofa.
Lounge stylishly with Modena
Organic shapes and minimal lines come together to create a contemporary expression with Modena. Its sleek design, characterized by slender legs and clean lines, creates a visually appealing aesthetic.
The low back combines with organic shapes for a minimalistic look that invites casual relaxation. “The Modena frame has a low profile that wraps around you”, says David Edwards. “This allows you to relax with your arms on both the back frame and the arms, which are at a comfortable height.” Modena is soft all the way around. With organic curves, the cushioned armrest makes this sofa perfect for a nap, too.

The reward of planting a tree seed is not instant, it takes time & requires patience. But the true reward, as with any new life, is witnessing a miracle. The inspiration for this kit came from my son’s tree. He planted an apple pip with his grandparents when he was a little boy. When it was strong enough, together they moved it to it’s final growing position outside of his bedroom window. Time has flown - he is approaching 30 years old and the tree is now taller than him. His tree bears fruit every year and is an anchoring reminder of his childhood and his magical relationship with his grandparents.
