Anyone for tea and a tour?

CLIVEDEN OPEN HOUSE SPECIAL TOURS OF CLIVEDEN HOUSE ON THURSDAY 13TH MARCH 2014 n Thursday 13th March the National Trust and Cliveden House Hotel are joining forces once again to offer the rare chance to explore Cliveden House near Maidenhead, including many rooms normally only enjoyed by hotel guests.

For more than 300 years Cliveden was a glittering hub of high society, home to aristocracy and royalty and visited by many of their famous friends. National Trust visitors will be able to follow in their footsteps by joining special tours of the house available only on Thursday 13th March. You’ll be able to wander through the impressive Great Hall, the cosy Library, the glittering French Dining Room and take a peek at some of the grandest Parterre view bedroom suites. The National Trust’s knowledgeable guides will also be on hand to tell stories about the house’s rich history and its former residents.

Over the years, Cliveden became renowned for the hospitality of its owners and an invitation to stay was rarely refused. Cliveden has been visited by virtually every British Monarch since George I as well as great statesmen such as President Roosevelt, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Prime Minsters George Canning, William Gladstone and Winston Churchill. Cliveden has always been a place where guests from many walks of life come together and the gatherings were just as likely to include distinguished artists and popular figures as politicians. Alfred Tennyson, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, George Bernard Shaw and Charlie Chaplin all spent time here as did ‘celebrities’ such as aviator Amy Johnson, actress Joyce Grenfell and military man T.E. Lawrence.

This tradition of fine hospitality and entertainment continues today and for an extra special treat on the 13th March you can book afternoon tea in the new André Garrett Restaurant at Cliveden

Love is in the air at local horse charity ocal charity The Horse Trust reopened its gates to visitors last weekend in time for the start of the 2014 season. Supporters enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with their favourite horses after The Horse Trust was closed for winter in December and January.

Among the horses on the yard were old favourites like retired army horse Commando and rescue pony Teddy. They were joined by some of The Horse Trust’s newest arrivals, including police horse Alfie.

Alfie arrived at The Horse Trust in January 2014 following the closure of the Cleveland Police Mounted Section. He is a 17.2hh striking bay gelding with a heart of gold and his friendly character quickly charmed all of the visitors.

Regular visitors and horse sponsors Janet and John Cannon, whose son serves with The Household Cavalry Mounted Section, were the first visitors through the gate, and were over the moon to be reunited with their sponsored horses.

pring still seems a long way off as cold and rainy days go on and on. Trying to keep children occupied has become something of a challenge. So thank goodness for the ray of sunshine that is the Chorleywood’s Children’s Literary Festival!

Now in its second year- a spin off from the hugely successful LitFest- the festival has something on offer for children of all ages from preschoolers to teenagers.

Once again, organisers and owners of the Chorleywood Bookshop, Morag Watkins and Sheryl Shurville, have worked their magic and arranged for some big names to visit including girls’ favourite author Jacqueline Wilson. But this time Jacqueline has something for the boys too!

There’s a fantastic line up of events including craft sessions, a writing competition, drama workshop, story time and film shows The event kicks off on Saturday Match 8th at 10am with two events: one for the six and unders, who are invited to meet Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam with illustrator Steve Lenton, and one for 10-15 year olds- a craft session with Kate Maryon, best-selling author of Invisible Girl.

Kate Maryon is an author whose books and writing style have been compared to Jacqueline Wilson as she focuses on real life issues that affect young people today. Invisible Girl explores teenage homelessness and the breakdown of family life.

Yet Kate’s talks are fun, interactive and inspiring. Kate will be running a further session for younger children at 11.30am.

At 2.30pm Jacqueline Wilson takes over at the Chorleywood Memorial Hall to talk about Paws and Whiskers, a book of short stories about cats and dogs which she has edited. There are some contemporary stories from such eminent authors as Malorie Blackman, Francesca Simon and Philip Pullman as well as some old favourites. (Part of the proceeds from this book go to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home of which Jacqueline is patron) Sunday March 9th is a star studded day which begins at 10am with the Starlight Academy Drama

Workshop with the author Jess Renison. For anyone who doesn’t know, Jess’s books are about a performing arts boarding school where girls study dance music or drama in a fairy tale castle by the sea. Jess is bringing along the singer Poppy Pickles, one third of The Frockettes to help run the hour long drama workshop which will appeal to all ages.

Between 11am and 1.15 there are two events which will appeal to the very young. Author and illustrator Yasmeen Ismail will be talking about her book, Time For Bed Fred and this is followed by an active storytime run by Little Beans and Co. In the afternoon there are two events which are bound to sell out fast. The author of the Bumper Book of Dinosaurs, Keiron Pim will be hosting RWAOR Dinosaur full of fun facts and gory bits about these endlessly fascinating extinct creatures.

At 4pm there is The Wimpy Kid Show, a must for all Jeff Kinney fans. The show includes a Wimpy Kid Draw Along, a Wimp Wars Quiz and video clips of Jeff showing how he draws the Wimpy kid characters.

At the end of each day there will be a film screening run by The Chorleywood Film Club. On Saturday the movie choice will be for younger children and on Sunday it will be a film for older kids.

For budding authors there’s also the annual writing competition sponsored by Dr Jack Dominian in memory of his wife . This year the theme is ‘Bravery’ and there will be four different age groups judged by a well known children’s author. The starry line up of judges includes Charlie Higson, Emily Gravett, Jonathan Stroud and Christopher William Hill!

BEHIND THE LINES A PROGRAMME TO COMMEMORATE THE GREAT WAR he Beaconsfield Society's literary event this year will commemorate the centenary of World War One. Gabriel Woolf and Linda Hart, making a return visit to Beaconsfield, will read a wide variety of poetry, prose and songs about the war. The programme will include poems

by Julian Grenfell, who had family connections with the Grenfells of Wilton Park, Beaconsfield.

Behind the Lines tells the story of what people thought at home at the start of the War, and what soldiers experienced at the Front, as it went into its second, third and fourth years.

The enthusiasm for war expressed by Julian Grenfell and Rupert Brooke will be contrasted with the bitterness of Siegfried Sassoon and the wry humour of ee cummings.

Other readings will include works by soldier poets Wilfred Owen, Edward Thomas, Ivor Gurney and Isaac Rosenberg.

The readings darken in tone to reflect the horror that unfolded as the war dragged on. But, says Woolf, "humour helped the soldiers to survive, so our programme includes readings from the pages of the famous trench newspaper, The Wipers Times, which will provide some laughter. We've

Linda Hart notes that "I am pleased to be reading several works by women who express their joy, their fears and then their anger as time and the war goes on. Most of these women are forgotten because of the focus on iconic poets such as Owen and Sassoon. But no programme on the War is complete without Vera Brittain's diary, and its record of the death of her beloved Roland. As an expat American I am pleased we have included a poem by Robert Frost, who

Kari Dorme, from The Beaconsfield Society, has looked into the connections between the town of Beaconsfield and the Grenfell family. "Julian Grenfell was a cousin of Beaconsfield’s war heroes, the Grenfell twins," she explains. The twin’s family home was Wilton Park, Beaconsfield. Later they lived at Butlers Court with their uncle and guardian, Field Marshall Baron Francis Grenfell of Kilvey.

"On 24 August 1914, Capt.

Francis Grenfell gained the coveted Victoria Cross for gallantry in action following the Battle of Mons. He was one of the first officers in the British Army to be awarded the VC in this war. His twin

brother Riversdale was killed less a month later. Julian and his brother, Gerald William Grenfell, also died in the War." The twins’ names are on the Beaconsfield war memorial and there is a stained glass window in St. Mary’s Parish Church in their memory.

‘Nash and Godfrey hated cogs, built a car with chains-and-dogs…’ George Eddy visits the River & Rowing Museum as it races into pole-position this year with a new exhibition of one of Britain’s leading racing car teams. fter flooding across the Three Counties mean a tumultuous start to the year for the River & Rowing Museum, the venue is now back on track and ready to rev into 2014 with a brand new exhibition. For the first time, the River & Rowing Museum is showcasing over 100 years of legendary Frazer Nash automobile history and hosting a series of adult and family events to accompany the exhibition. Frazer Nash opens on 15 February and charts his journey from racing cars and winning trophies to training mechanics from the Army and Navy during World War II. At the centre of the exhibition are two historic cars displayed in the Lord Kirkham Gallery. The 1951 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica, Sir Stirling Moss’ British Empire Trophy winning car, is over 60 years old with a top speed of 120 mph and one of only 29 ever made. As one of the most successful and well-known of all British racing drivers, Sir Stirling Moss’ story and his affinity with Frazer Nash cars which he raced on several occasions are portrayed alongside the car in the gallery. The Museum has also acquired the earliest Frazer Nash still in existence, the fantastic 1925 PlusPower Sports Tourer, which charts a significant development in automobile engineering in the first half of the 20th Century.

The exhibition tells the fascinating narrative of Archie Frazer Nash as a twenty-one year old ex-engineering apprentice who with his friend, Ron Godfrey, designed a unique

‘cyclecar’ in 1910. This paved the way for the competitive sports cars that created the ‘Chain Gang’, the name given to leading Frazer Nash drivers using their distinctive chain-drive system.

“The Archives Trustees are very pleased to have the opportunity of working with such a first class heritage organisation as the River & Rowing Museum in presenting this exhibition, which is an ideal way of relating different aspects of the Frazer Nash story,” said Roger Richmond, Chairman of the Frazer Nash Archives, “we hope that visitors to the Museum will be rewarded by the exciting world of Frazer Nash activities and appreciate how these remain as alive today as they did in the past."

Accompanying the exhibition is a series of nine events, including ‘Under the Bonnet’,

where Peter Livesey of the Frazer Nash Archives will be the ‘lifting the bonnet’ on the fantastic cars in the exhibition, exploring how they work and explaining their history, and ‘Vroomm Vroomm!’ where children will get the opportunity to make, play and experiment with things that move in a fun-packed family day.

Children can also join the ‘Motor Bags’ afternoon where they will learn how to screen-print their own canvas bag and create a block print with images inspired by the shapes, materials and people in the Frazer Nash exhibition. The River & Rowing Museum is also hosting informative lectures where visitors can learn more about the history of Frazer Nash. James Trigwell, a trustee of the Frazer Nash Archives, has explored the history of this legendary manufacturer for over 10 years. At the beginning of April, he will be coming to the Museum to talk about how Frazer Nash successfully introduced the new state-of-the-art German BMWs into Britain in the mid-1930s, and how, following the war, Frazer Nash developed their own British-built sports car based on BMW designs.

The award-winning River & Rowing Museum, recently ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by The Times and announced record visitor numbers last year.

32 he 32nd season of Amersham festival of Music begins on April 11th this year and runs until May 2nd. The festival has always featured a wide range of musical styles and events and this year is no exception. The first Amersham Festival of Music was in April 1983. It ran for just over a week, featuring an orchestral concert, Handel's magnificent oratorio Saul performed by the South Bucks Choral Society, a harpsichord recital at Chenies Manor House, a choral concert by the Chamber Choir of Dr Challoner's Grammar School, a recital of Lieder and English Song by soprano Alison Hargan, an evening with the Light Blues - a brilliant ensemble of former Oxbridge choral scholars and a Choral Evensong in St Mary's Church. The aim in starting the Festival was to promote music-making of the highest professional quality in the local area, using some of the very attractive local venues available.

From the outset it was warmly supported by local music lovers and a number of generous sponsors, without whose assistance such a festival would never have been possible.

Thirty years later the annual Festival spans a period of three or

more weeks. There is also an autumn-winter season of concerts by the Festival Chamber Orchestra. This unique professional orchestra is directed

The opening orchestral concert on April 11th is sure to delight many as it includes Vaughan William’s ever popular work The Lark Ascending and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5. The central work in the same concert, is the wonderfully lyric Oboe Concerto

This year two Jazz concerts are featured. On April 16th Jacqui Dankworth has agreed to perform an evening of Jazz, Folk, Soul and Blues. Jacqui, who is such a marvellous jazz singer, will be performing with her musicians and this promises to be a very special evening indeed. If you prefer your Jazz with a bigger band be sure not to miss Dr Challoner’s Grammar School Jazz Band on April 23rd. Do not be deterred by the fact that they are a school band. They produce a maturity of sound beyond their years and their playing is fantastic and very professional.

The festival is proud to have offered many bursaries over the years to help talented young musicians with their studies. This year on April 13th Angelika Stangl, one of the previous bursary holders, will give the Young Artist’s recital. Angelika now studies at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and will play an exciting and varied programme on oboe and violin.

Peter Medhurst regularly presents workshops and study days to great acclaim around the country.

We are delighted that on April 22nd he will give a completely new lecture called The English Connection which will link in with some of the British Music featured in this year’s festival.

On April 24th Mark Wildman, Head of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music will be working with young singers from the Royal Academy of Music in a masterclass which will include music by some of our greatest British composers. Anyone who has a love of singing will find this an inspiration.

Vaughan Williams’s great work A Sea Symphony will be performed by South Bucks Choral Society with the Festival Orchestra, both directed by Iain Ledingham on April 26th. This dramatic depiction of the sea and its moods uses a large orchestra

by Walton’s stirring Crown Imperial and Vaughan Williams’ rich and beautiful variations of the folk tune known as Dives and Lazarus.

Once again we will return to the beautiful setting of Chenies Manor on April 29th for a supper and concert given by The Curzon Quartet. The group is passionate about historical performance and bring alive the sound of earlier music as it was first played.

Hearing their music in this historical setting will add an extra dimension to the music of Haydn and Mendelssohn which is included in their programme.

The festival closes on May 2nd with a concert given the Festival Chamber Ensemble. Iain Ledingham himself will be the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat major and we conclude our celebration of English Music with two wonderful works inspired by the poetry of A.E. The role of the Head Teacher

BY SIMON EVERSON, HEAD MASTER OF MERCHANT TAYLORSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; SCHOOL am now six months into my second headship. It seems a good point to pause and reflect on the experiences of being a Head. As a group, we Heads suffer more than most from a misleading popular perception of our role. Despite being almost 100 years out of date, for many the image that most closely describes a Head Teacher is taken from the Bash Street Kids stories in the Beano. They summon up a picture of an antique, rake-thin, remote and tweedy old man, clad in a black academic gown.

This perception is unfair to Heads â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but what are we really like? What should parents and pupils understand of this important figure in their childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s education? We should start by debunking a few myths.

I

The most common myth of headship is that it is a lonely job. The perception is of crushing solitude, of an isolated person who â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whilst brooding at an Olympian height â&#x20AC;&#x201C; bears the weight of the whole school upon his or her shoulders: just this morning I opened the Times Educational Supplement to see that the lead article bore the headline â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Loneliness of Leadership.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; The image beside the headline was a marble statue holding his face in his hands with a rather mischievous pigeon perched on his head. After more than eight years of headship I beg to differ. Yes, the final decision lies with the Head but each of us is surrounded by teams and innumerable supportive groups of colleagues.

We share the discussion, collectively develop the vision and rarely act without agreement and mutual support. More widely, every Head is linked to other Head Teachers through professional bodies and circles of friendship. If all that fails, buy a dog. Ask most Head Teachers whether they are afflicted by loneliness and they will reply that they would cheerfully welcome a bit of solitude to get some thinking done.

The second myth is that the role is stressful. Setting aside the fact that not all stress is bad and that it is a balance of stresses that keeps cathedral walls standing for innumerable centuries, in fact the role is not stressful in the true sense of the word. It is pressured, often hectic, busy and (in modern parlance) full on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but not stressful. Stress arises from feeling of lack of control. Stress arises from uncertainty. Heads suffer from many things but they benefit from being the one in charge. Arguably, Deputy Heads - with significant responsibility but no full ownership of the direction of the school - are more prone to stress.

The third common misperception is that headship is primarily about administration and paperwork. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is true that, particularly in state schools, the compliance culture requires that paperwork be undertaken and that records be in order. However, this is â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;grunt workâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and will largely be completed by support staff, overseen by 30

a Deputy. Rather than a paper shuffling role, headship is almost entirely focused on people, whether it is supporting a Rugby XV on the touchline or taking lunch with pupils new to the school. As a Head, your attention will be almost exclusively given to the needs of your pupils and working with colleagues (both teaching and support staff). The few minutes of any day not given to encouraging, collaborating with, inspiring, admonishing, cajoling and acknowledging those two key groups will be spent working with others. Heads also work closely with governors, parents, the press, people of local significance, former pupils and innumerable others. The primary tools of headship are communication and persuasion, whether delivered one-to-one or to a larger group.

Our final myth is that each Head is, at least on some level, a Machiavellian mastermind. Much as some of us might enjoy it if we were, this description does not stick either. In fact, schools are now so complex that it would be almost impossible to mastermind all activities people and processes involved. Again, the opposite of that myth is true. It is vital for every Head to be as open and transparent as possible. No Head wants to be in possession of information about a pupil unknown to that the childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents. Teachers look to Heads for inspiration â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but they are highly intelligent and do not take kindly to the feeling of being manipulated.

Head Teachers have to be moral leaders as well as professional leaders. An essential part of this is to prove beyond doubt to others that we are not in it for ourselves, but have a wider perspective and a clear moral compass.

So what is true about the role? The reality is both simpler and more fulfilling than any of these myths. The busyness of the role is a given.

Besides that, a key ingredient of the role is variety. Headship will involve you in all aspects of the life of a school and the experiences of those who work and learn there. The only certainty is surprise; it is not uncommon to go from a financial strategy meeting to one offering comfort to a distressed pupil or colleague. The working day of the Head is also full of humour. Not a day goes by without laughter and celebration of achievement. It is inherently joyful to work with children â&#x20AC;&#x201C; never boring, always surprising and often humbling.

After eight years, I can honestly say that I am still learning. I doubt I will ever reach the point where the day ahead is fully mapped and without surprises. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I enjoy the role so much!

Planning for future career success In 2013, Ofsted reported on the effectiveness of careers services in schools and concluded that three quarters were not delivering adequate advice, nor were they engaging with external experts. Add to this a swathe of warnings that the quality of careers guidance in schools is â&#x20AC;&#x153;nothing less than appallingâ&#x20AC;?, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;heading towards a cliff edgeâ&#x20AC;?, and warning sirens are likely to start sounding. ndeed, the issues around delivering careers guidance are compounded by external factors. Simply, the world we live in is increasingly competitive and many young people and their parents are realising that top academic qualifications arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always enough to succeed. Evidence suggests that academic qualifications count for just 50% of a young personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to do a job well. The remaining 50% is made up of that personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s character, focus, persistence, ability to cope with failure, to make connections and to think critically. But in a world where 40% of jobs werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even thought of 10 years ago, it can often be difficult to determine which skills are the key to success â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially if specialist support isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t available.

I

Psychometric profiling is an excellent way to help young people identify and understand their strengths and weaknesses. It can help them better understand their passions and therefore choose further studies and career paths best suited to them as an individual.

Career insight events provide an opportunity to meet with and hear first-hand from professionals currently in those sectors.

Volunteer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; helping out with any form of community, environmental or charitable cause equips you with lots of useful new skills and enhances your CV â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something which could pique the interest of a potential employer or course tutor.

Get some experience: arranging work experience will not only provide invaluable career insight, but also valuable additions to your CV. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to also include other achievements where the skills are transferrable to a work place scenario: babysitting shows responsibility; success in music exams shows persistence; and volunteering can demonstrate a commitment to a role regardless of financial reward.

As well as including new work, this exhibition contains a wide variety of Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photographs from a career that has spanned more than half a century.

The portraits have been personally selected by Bailey from the subjects and groups that he captured over the last five decades: photographers, actors, writers, musicians, filmmakers, fashion icons, designers, models, artists and people encountered on his travels; many of them famous, some unknown, all of them engaging and memorable. Bailey will be making new silver gelatin prints of his black-and-white portraits especially for the exhibition.

Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stardust is structured thematically, with iconic images presented alongside many lesser-known portraits, its title reflecting the notion that we are all made from, and return to, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;stardustâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

There will be rooms devoted to Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s travels, well as icons from the worlds of fashion and the arts, and people of the East End of London. There will be selections from two of Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most acclaimed bodies of work: the Box of Pin-Ups, which helped define the 1960s through arresting studies of key figures, and Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Democracy, in

which people visiting his studio were asked if they would agree to be photographed naked.

Rooms devoted to striking portraits of The Rolling Stones and Catherine Bailey contrast with remarkable documentary photographs from the photographerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1974 and moving images of those devastated by the famine in east Africa, taken in support of the Band Aid charity in 1985.

HE PIG-near Bath, the latest addition to one of the most exciting and fastest growing hotel and restaurant groups in the UK, is set to open this March.

The 29-bedroom Georgian property, formerly Hunstrete House Hotel, is idyllically set within 30 acres of meadows and deer park, tucked away in the folds of the rolling Mendip Hills and just a 10-minute drive from the city.

With interiors created by designer Judy Hutson, the rooms will have the shabby chic style that has become synonymous with THE PIG, but with unique twists to give them their own individuality.

Victoria Beckhamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first designer store in Mayfair Opening Autumn 2014

he already boasts an e-boutique and sells in luxury stores all over the world but it seems thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enough for Victoria Beckham. The designer has announced that she is to launch her first standalone store, which will open in Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dover Street, just a short walk from Old Bond Street, in the autumn.

The store will be situated at number 36 which is currently occupied by sporting store Orvis. This places Victoria at the heart of the capitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fashion district.

Along with her main collection, the new boutique will also house sister range Victoria Victoria Beckham, as well as accessories and denim.

Her designs have proved popular with the likes of Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow. Up until now, Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chic clothing line and handbags have only been available online, in fashion outlets and department stores, but now her fans will only have to take a trip to Dover Street in order to browse her latest collections.

This latest move in her fashion career comes as no surprise, as the 39-year-old star has made no secret of her desire to set up shop.

Pack a healthy lunchbox. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Disguiseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; vegetables in sandwich fillings, vary the fillings, provide plain yogurt and a piece of fruit thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to eat. Children can be very particular about fruit. Aim to give them small apples, bananas and grapes, which are easy to hold, peel and eat.

Make sure your children eat breakfast. This will ensure a steady supply of energy to get them through the morning, help maintain attention span and discourage snacking. Fortified breakfast cereals can also be a good source of iron and B vitamins.

Minerals to consider ..

Two particularly important minerals for school-aged children and teenagers are calcium and iron, which help strengthen teeth and bones and prevent anaemia, poor concentration and lethargy respectively.

To ensure that childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs are met, include milk and other dairy products, pulses, lean red meat and green leafy vegetables frequently in meals. Humble watercress recently rivalled expensive potions when, after just four weeks of adding a bag a day to their diet, 10 out of 11 females experienced visible improvements to their skin, according to a Watercress Alliance study.

BREAKFAST Kick start your day with a cup of green tea to rev up your metabolism and get your skin glowing.

"Drinking green tea has many beauty benefits," says Simple nutritionist, Fiona Hunter. "A natural antioxidant, green tea comes from the same plant as other teas but it is not fermented, so retains more nutrients and has been shown to have twice as much antioxidant power as vitamin E. "Green tea can help when it comes to skincare, protecting it from external environmental influences and therefore helping fight signs of premature ageing."

Eggs are the breakfast food to indulge in for gorgeous, glossy locks. They work wonders for hair inside and out; rich in biotin, which is essential for cell growth, and vitamin B-12 for strengthening locks and maintaining a healthy scalp.

Finish with a glass of fresh orange juice.

It's packed with vitamin C which is crucial for producing collagen - the protein that helps keep skin looking fresh and youthful.

LUNCH Whip up a skin-friendly super-salad for your afternoon meal. Ingredients rich in lutein can work especially well if you're a sun-seeker.

Ursell explains: "Lutein belongs to the carotenoid family of antioxidants and has been linked to reducing sun-induced skin damage and improving the elasticity of the skin."

Spinach (12mg in 100g) and red peppers (7mg in 100g) are both good sources. Add some hearty chunks of sweet potato for an extra fix of Vitamin E. Forget ice cream and try a small scoop of coconut oil for afters. Jennifer Aniston was spotted toting the ingredient in her shopping basket. The plant oil promotes supple, deeply hydrated skin and it's versatile too...

DINNER You can't beat oily fish for enviable skin and hair. The fatty acids found in salmon, mackerel and sardines can help give you a post-facial-like glow, keeping your skin plump and moisturised.

If Christmas leftovers and curries haven't put you off, turkey is also a healthy dinner alternative.

Hunter says: "A 100g serving contains nearly 75% of an adult's Recommend Daily Allowance (RDA) of protein. It's also low in fat and rich in zinc and selenium - an antioxidant that benefits the skin and immune system."

For sides, try carrots: "Rich in alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which convert to vitamin A, this is essential for the manufacture of new skin cells," Hunter advises.

Chocoholics don't have to deny themselves completely for dessert. Just stick to the dark stuff, rather than white or milk choc. Good quality dark chocolate, with high cocoa contents, contains a group of phytochemicals called flavonols that can help protect the skin against free radical damage, known to cause wrinkles and anti-ageing.

ANYWAY, TIME TO TALK ABOUT TEETH OR MORE TO THE POINT REPLACEMENT FOR MISSING TEETH… Q. What are dental implants, are they screwed into your jaw or your tooth roots?

A. I am going to concentrate this month’s edition on Dental Implants and try and give you basic understanding on dentistry’s exciting field. I have touched on the subject in previous editorials but am happy to go over it again as it’s an exciting field.

Dental Implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jaw bone. They are used to replace missing teeth and they can be used to support one or more false teeth. Research indicates that dental implants biocompatible surface actually stimulates the required fusion with the bone.

Once that has been achieved, the crown, bridge or whole tooth replacement can be fixed to the implant or implants to feel and function like natural teeth.

Implants are a well-established, tried and tested treatment. Over 95% of modern implants should last for many years with the right care. More people than ever are choosing dental implants as the preferred tooth replacement therapy. That’s because people are discovering that implants not only feel secure and stable, allowing them to speak and eat clearly, but they look natural as

well. And there’s another bonusbecause they help prevent bone loss, implants can help to maintain a more youthful appearance!

Q. Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth?

A. Regardless of the cause of tooth loss, dental implants can be a simple, proven lasting solution for restoring teeth. After a thorough examination of your medical history, your dentist can advise you whether dental implants may be the right solution for you. There is no upper age limit.

Nevertheless, it does depend on the condition of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will arrange for a number of special tests to find out the amount of bone still there. If there is not enough, it may be possible for the bone to be built up by grafting bone into the area first. This will be an extra procedure prior to placing the implant.

Also, heavy alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes or other clinical conditions may interfere with an implants integration process and its ultimate long term success. Patients who grind their teeth at night must also undertake a careful evaluation

with their dentist.

Q. Do Implants hurt?

A. The big question! Placing the implant means a small operation and can be performed using a simple local anaesthetic, and sometimes with sedation if you are nervous. Sometimes the dentist may need to use general anaesthetic for complex cases.

You will not feel any pain during the procedure but you may feel discomfort during the week after the surgery.

Q. How long does the treatment take?

A. Your dentist will be able to give you a rough timetable before the treatment starts but usually the permanent teeth are fitted 3-6 months after the implants are put in. In a minority of cases, it may take up to a year for the implant to fully integrate with the bone.

Q. How long do they last?

A. How long implants and the new teeth last depends primarily on how well your teeth are cared for. If you have good oral hygiene, including good home care and regular dental re care visits, your implants can lasts for many years, possibly up to an entire lifetime.

Q. Is there any complication or risk?

A. Careful preparation and implementation of implant treatment reduces risk to a minimum. However, Implant treatment is a surgical procedure and as such it is associated with certain risks. Under normal circumstances, the swelling and mild pain which may occur often disappear after a few days.

Periodontitis (gum disease), poor oral hygiene, inadequate wound healing, smoking,or serious general disease (e.g. diabetes) may be a contraindication for dental implants. Your dentist will be glad to provide you with information about potential complications and risks.

Q. Is the treatment expensive?

A. Unfortunately, yes. However, in many situations the cost is only a little more than the cost of more conventional treatment with crowns and bridges. Over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost effective and satisfactory option. There are advantages to having an implant.

An implant to replace a single tooth avoids the need to cut down teeth either side for crowns to support a bridge.

IS BEXSERO AVAILABLE ON THE NHS?

While Bexsero has been approved by the NHS it is only available on a very restricted basis. It is however available privately. DOCTORnow is able to offer this service to the general public.

WHO CAN BE VACCINATED AGAINST MENINGITIS B?

Infants aged 2 months and older can be vaccinated. Dosing schedules depend on the age of the child. Adolescents and adults can also be vaccinated, however the efficacy for adults aged 50 years and older has not yet been studied.

ARE THERE ANY COMMON SIDE EFFECTS FROM HAVING THE VACCINATION?

There are a few very common side effects; but these can include pain and tenderness, redness and slight swelling at the site of the vaccination.

WHAT IS THE PROSTATE?

SYMPTOMS OF PROBLEMS

The prostate is a gland that is only found in men; it makes the fluid part of semen. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine and semen, and is the size and shape of a walnut.

There are various symptoms that may suggest prostate problems.

However, a professional diagnosis is essential because the most common symptoms of a cancerous prostate, and one that is enlarged but in fact benign, can be the same. They include: • Having to rush to the loo to pass urine • Difficulty in passing urine • Passing urine more often than usual, especially at night • Pain when passing urine • Blood in the urine or semen (very rare)

THE CAUSES

Normally the growth of all cells is carefully controlled in the body so that as cells die, they are replaced in an orderly fashion.

However, cancer can develop when cells start to grow in an uncontrolled way. If this happens in the prostate gland, prostate cancer can develop.

Prostate cancer can grow slowly or very quickly. Most are slow-growing to start with and may never cause any problems or symptoms in a man’s lifetime. However, some men will have cancer that is more aggressive or ‘high risk.’ This needs treatment to help prevent or delay it spreading outside the prostate gland.

Whether cancer is present or not, the symptoms are caused by the prostate pressing on the urethra. This pressure then blocks the flow of urine.

The single most significant risk factor is simply your age. The older you are, the greater the risk. Making your property thermally efficient

aking a property thermally efficient is very much worthwhile.

With today’s ever increasing energy bills, it is now more important than ever that UK homeowners replace inefficient windows and doors with more thermally efficient ones. Having said that, to ensure a property gets the full benefit from an investment in double or triple glazing property owners also need to properly insulate the loft and install cavity wall insulation or solid wall insulation, dependent on the type of house and manner of construction.

For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the basic requirement of actually being able to sell their particular premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand to reduce the asking price by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a heavy extra discount off the asking price for being the ones “being made” to carry out this essential work.

When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. The energy savings over time from fitting replacement double or triple glazing are significant and will eventually pay for the cost of installation. Modern thermally broken “A” rated UPVC triple glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure and available in some cases in the same slimmer profiles as double glazed UPVC windows, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views and of course more attractive sight lines.

Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A” rated double glazed windows or triple glazed windows and doors is a real must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills, improve home security, add value to their home and improve their day to day living environment.

Premium prices mean premium efficiency hy it is worth paying the premium for aluminium energy rated replacement double glazing Aluminium replacement casement windows can be powder coated in any RAL colour, so offer property owners the opportunity to have all sorts of dual colour effects, such as say a "Mock Tudor" exterior with black outer frames and white sashes (or vice-versa) and internal frames to match the decor of the room. UPVC windows can be sprayed in any RAL colour, but the long term quality of the finish can be questionable, as coloured UPVC is not as durable as powder coated aluminium, and has been known to fade after a period of time.

Whilst aluminium is still available in a silver anodised finish, the vast majority of aluminium windows fabricated in the UK today have a high quality, highly durable powder coated finish instead. Also nowadays, aluminium frames usually have a polyamide "thermal break", preventing the formation of condensation on the internal frames, which sometimes occurred on non-thermally aluminium fenestration products of old.

Powder coated aluminium will not fade and will last longer than UPVC over a lifetime. Aluminium is 100% recyclable, so is extremely environmentally friendly, plus being a metal it offers even more security, flexibility and strength than UPVC. Most UK manufacturers should be able to offer customers aluminium windows in a single or dual colour finish, along with matching front doors, back doors, in-line sliding patio doors, French doors, plus sliding and folding doors in any RAL colour in matching profiles.

Hazlemere' s aluminium frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature mechanically jointed corners, with a choice of a) an attractive sculptured frame appearance or b) square contemporary frame inside and out. Most aluminium manufacturers should be able to offer a choice of aluminium profiles, colour and bead options.

Hazlemere aluminium casement windows have a 75mm deep (front to back) thermally broken frame by a polyamide strip and a high security multi-locking locking system as standard. All their aluminium doors come with high security dog-bolts and toughened safety glass to BS6206. High security external glazing beads prevent removal of sealed

units/panels from the outside by unwanted intruders.

The 24mm wide aluminium double glazed unit is 4mm/16mm/4mm, a combination of low iron outer float or toughened clear or obscure safety glass, a black Swiss V warm edge spacer bar, 90% Argon filled, and an inner soft coat float or toughened glass pane. This glazing specification achieves a centre-pane U Value of 1.2 W/m2K. The combined U-Value of Hazlemere’s “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows 1.64 W/m2K. The bottom line is that aluminium profiles offer slimmer sight lines than UPVC profiles, so consequently there is a greater glass area, which delivers more light, solar gain and affords better aesthetics and external views.

Unlike UPVC aluminium does not need steel reinforcing so can deliver larger windows, greater openings and wider conservatory roof spans. Also lower quality UPVC products can be prone to fade, especially if in direct sunlight, whereas powder coated aluminium will not fade, plus expands and contracts far less than UPVC. UPVC windows, doors and conservatories simply cannot offer the range of colour choices as standard that aluminium can, although UPVC as a more mass market product is generally less expensive.

Aluminium is a superior material, but does costs slightly more, so as with most consumer decisions - the choice is yours!

Retro Style

First things first, decide on what theme or era you would like your home to be. Some fun ideas for different decades are the kitchy 50â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, the mod look of the 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, or the bohemiam look of the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

retro style usually has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of â&#x20AC;&#x153;flairâ&#x20AC;?. Just think back to the fabrics and textures during the 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll immediately get a sense of where your decor needs to go to truly capture the essence of retro style. Because retro-style requires such a bold approach, it also requires a certain personality to pull it off. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating.

On the contrary, it is loud, busy and most definitely â&#x20AC;&#x153;funkyâ&#x20AC;?.

Music helped shape this decade as rock music mixed with disco fever, disco balls and disco dancing hit the groovy scene. Many 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homes were light, airy and free in reflection of the movements that were happening; activism, freedom and self-expression. There are many ways to integrate elements of 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decor into your home without over doing it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there is the traditional retro style, or you may prefer for a more modern contemporary retro theme.

Trying to furnish your entire home strictly from a specific era can become quite tricky, so you could mix the old with new, and accessorise with items that complement the era you are looking to portray.

Get the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s look: Colour: Building your colour scheme around the hippie, ethnic style which would give you a more neutral palette of earth tones i.e. beige, sage green, sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange, navy, plum, aubergine, wine and deep shades of purple. Brown and cream with orange and avocado were the most popular colour choices of the seventies. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: Colors in Retro Decors One of the easiest ways to give a room a retro feel is to choose retro colours. In addition, purple and hot pink both make a great addition to your retro decor. Walls: Look for a fabulous wallpaper which you could add to your room or use to make a stunning mural. Vinyl wallpaper was popular during the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s however today there are many incredible designs that are paper or fabric backed.

Patterned fabrics also make great murals so enjoy looking through lots of ranges before you make your final selection. They are a real nostalgic look and could be used in a very modern way within your design.

Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. Sofas are broad and elongated with multi-colored throw pillows for an added dash of colour. Shiny chrome barstools with bright red seats draw your attention to a diner-style kitchen while Mitt chairs and puzzle-piece ottomans provide unique seating for guests.

Decor: Look for some tubular chrome or polished steel pieces of furniture to add to your look. Bean bags are also a great addition. Super comfy! Retro style interiors have lots of big pattern so mix and match fabrics i.e. upholstery to sofas, scatter cushions and curtains. It is daring to have lots of pattern in the one room however, you can combine them as long as you link in tones so that your design look tasteful.

The Seventies retro style interiors and design is considered very trendy these days. It is an exciting blend of hippie, beatnik, and boho chic with the funky kitsch designs from the sixties.

Lighting: Pendant lamps make a great retro centrepiece in the room, or you could go for dim retro lamps around the room, creates a relaxing mood in the room!

Poached Yorkshire Rhubarb Vanilla pannacotta and ginger jelly

Surprisingly rhubarb is a vegetable stalk of a large perennial herb with an uncanny ability to impersonate fresh fruit in the middle of winter. Within a triangle of Yorkshire a concentration of forcing sheds appeared. Mature plants of at least a couple of years old are 'forced' by being lifted from the soil late in the year and grown on inside warm, dark sheds where they send out bright pink, tender stalks with pale green or yellow leaves. Adding to the magic, traditionally the harvest tales place by candlelight. Thankfully the tradition lives on today and the tart, shocking pink rhubarb is served here with a rich set cream, and fiery ginger all of which marry together superbly.

Ingredients (Serves 4) Ginger jelly 100ml ginger syrup from a jar of candied stem ginger 1 leaf gelatine Vanilla pannacotta 600ml double cream 1.5 gelatine leaves 75ml cold milk 75g icing sugar Rhubarb compote 4 sticks of forced Yorkshire rhubarb 100g caster sugar 100ml water 2 roots of finely diced candied stem ginger from the jar to garnish 6 Medium dariole moulds wetted with cold water

Method For the Ginger Jelly 1. Soak your gelatine in cold water and set The Artichoke is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

6. Pour 400ml of your cream into a heavy bottomed pan and reduce by a 1/3.

7. Take the gelatine out of milk, then whisk into the reduced cream until dissolved.

8. Leave the cream mixture to cool for 5 minutes and then place in the fridge for approx 1 hour until the mixture thickens to a lightly whipped cream consistency.

9. Lightly whip the remaining cream with the icing sugar and fold in to the mixture 10. Spoon into moulds and set in the fridge.

For the Rhubarb 11. Cut your rhubarb into batons.

12. Make a stock syrup by the placing the sugar and water into a heavy bottomed pan and place on the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

13. Poach the rhubarb in the stock syrup until soft but still holding its shape (be careful not to overcook) 14. Strain a little of the juice from the rhubarb into a separate pan and then reduce until thick and syrupy.

To serve 15. Using a little warm water, lightly warm the outside of your mould and turn out onto a plate, stack a little of the poached rhubarb to the side and finish oďŹ&#x20AC; with a fine dice of stem ginger and rhubarb syrup.

To serve To keep your rhubarb a wonderful vibrant pink, cook for the shortest time and in as little syrup as possible, this will ensure the colour does not leach out.
