Hedsor House a venue for all occasions
F
ilm and television buffs will instantly recognise magnificent Hedsor House — the award-winning corporate events, wedding and filming venue in Taplow, Buckinghamshire. e Georgian country mansion has featured in a host of high-profile films and popular TV programmes including Downton Abbey, Midsomer Murders, 24 and Spooks. Its most famous role of all came in 2013 as the fictional ‘Beecham House’ – a stately retirement home for opera singers – in the acclaimed movie Quartet directed by Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman. Quartet, with its star-studded cast of Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Sheridan Smith and Michael Gambon, was filmed exclusively on the picturesque historic 100-acre country estate. e stunning backdrop for Hoffman's directorial debut of the entertaining and uplifting story Quartet, based on Sir Ronald Harwood's stage play of the same name, brought Hedsor House international acclaim. Hedsor House has hosted numerous movies and leading stars including Nicole Kidman in Golden Compass and more recently Johnny Depp in Mortdecai, which went on general release in the UK in January. e action comedy film features an all-star cast that also includes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn with Jeff Goldblum, and Paul Bettany. After filming the movie Johnny Depp wrote in Hedsor House’s visitor’s book: “An absolutely amazing place! Many thanks for allowing us this visit. Much respect.” Although the house is extremely popular as a super location for the film and TV industry, it is primarily an award-winning weddings and events venue. Steeped in history, Hedsor House, once the home of royalty, is set in beautiful parkland just 15 minutes from Heathrow and 30 minutes from London. e picturesque location is privately owned and provides a magnificent backdrop for a wide range of events, exhibitions, parties, weddings and product launches. Quintessentially English, Hedsor House was the home of Augusta the Dowager Princess of Wales, mother of King George III and founder of Kew Gardens. Originally designed by Sir William
1 2 F e b rU A rY 2 01 5
Chambers, architect of Somerset House, the house is set in parkland that has been enjoyed by royalty dating back to 1166. King George III and Queen Charlotte helped design the house and chose the location of the house in its marvellous setting high above the River ames because of its stunning views. Queen Victoria was a regular visitor from Windsor Castle a century later with historic diary entries of the Royal children playing croquet on Hedsor’s lawns. e house was rebuilt in 1868 and unusually modelled in the Italian villa style. It featured an all-new domed Grand Hall rather than the traditional open courtyard which set it apart from the grand manors of the time. is stunning domed hall is the focal point of Hedsor House to this day. Given as a wedding gift to Phillip and Florence Shephard in 1932 by Phillip Shephard’s parents, Hedsor House has remained in the Shephard family for four generations. e family lived in Hedsor House until 1952 when they moved to another home on the estate where they still live today. Hedsor House was then leased out as a US Air Force secret communications base in the Cold War, then an international computer company’s headquarters and finally returning to the family in 2003. Today it is run by Nick, Mark and Hamish Shephard, whose father was born in the house and the grandsons of Phillip Shephard. Hedsor House is now an award-winning venue for weddings, events and filming. Last year Hedsor House hosted 92 weddings as well as many events, team building days and country pursuits, all enjoying the privacy and exclusivity along with an array of superb facilities. e extensive grounds and sumptuous settings are perfect for occasions all sizes. Weddings range from an intimate 60-guest ceremony, a 140-person wedding breakfast or receptions for up to 800-people in a marquee on the beautifully manicured lawns. For corporate clients, Hedsor House is constantly striving to broaden its appeal with new innovations and has installed a mile long 4x4 track in the grounds which is ideal for car manufacturers to showcase their vehicles. ■

Henley DesIgn Day 2015 Let architects and designers inspire you, in Henley Town Hall
I
f you’re thinking about a major makeover for your home, the Henley Design Day on Saturday 7th March is for you. Come along and meet nearly twenty local architects and other design specialists to talk through your ideas and inspire your creativity. Admission is free. In March last year, around 300 people flocked to the second annual RIBA Henley Design Day and discussed their building needs and desires with architects, interior designers, landscape gardeners, tile and floor specialists, kitchen specialists, design authors, and even planning consultants.
What an architect can bring to your project An RIBA Chartered Practice can help you realise your ambitions and guide you through the design and construction process. Architects provide a service that extends well beyond producing a set of drawings – they can handle the paperwork, bring value for money, imagination and peace of mind to your project, whilst keeping it on track and on budget.
Value for money Architects are professional problem-solvers. eir experience and insight can help stretch what can be achieved within your budget and add value to your project. ey can suggest new ways of utilising space and light, enrich the palette of materials, finishes or fittings, find a builder at the right price, and propose design solutions that will reduce your overall running costs whilst maximising the energy efficiency of your home. At a fraction of the cost of your project, an architect’s fees will prove a sound investment.
imagination An architect can lift your project out of the ordinary and help you achieve your aspirations and vision. ey are trained designers who will explore your needs and desires and find inventive and practical ways of enhancing your living environment.
peace of mind When you hire an architect, you have a professional on your side who knows the construction industry inside out. You are working with someone who has undertaken seven years of architectural training – no other building professional is trained in design and construction to such a high level of expertise Architect Mark Shipton of Oxford Architects, who took part in the Design Day said that visitors were surprised at the range of specialisms on offer: ‘whether you need a building conservation expert, are interested in sustainability, refurbishment or self-build – you’ll find an architect to suit your need in Henley Town Hall!’ Mark is Chairman of the RIBA South region which represents around 2,500 architects: ‘e Design Day is a fantastic, unique way for you to come and chat about practical ways to achieve what you want and need from your building.’ ■

he acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, showcasing the rich array of life on our planet, reflecting its beauty and also highlighting its fragility, returns to the Natural History Museum at Tring to celebrate its fiftieth year. î “is collection of more than 100 images uniquely combines the work of talented young photographers, gifted amateurs and leading professionals, all selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity. Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring, Paul Kitching says, ‘I'm delighted that we are able to show the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition again here in the Natural History Museum at Tring. î “is exhibition is a firm favourite with our visitors and sta alike and I'm always amazed by the quality and diversity of images on display.’ Winners of the grand titles in this year’s milestone competition were announced at a prestigious awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London. American photographer Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 by a panel of international judges for his serene black-and-white image of lions resting with their cubs in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Following the pride for nearly six months, he photographed them in infra-red, which he explains, ‘transforms the light and turns the moment into something primal, biblical almost’. Jim Brandenburg, chair of the judging panel and acclaimed wildlife photographer, said, ‘Nick’s image encapsulated so many elements that demonstrated artistic and technical skill, the sort that takes many years & 50
of professional work to hone and craft as he has done.’ Meanwhile eight-year-old Carlos Perez Naval was awarded Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 for his image of a scorpion soaking up the Sun, Stinger in the Sun. î “e image shows the scorpion flourishing its sting as a warning to the young photographer, who had found it basking on a flat stone in a rocky area near his home in Torralba de los Sisones, northeast Spain. î “e late afternoon light was casting such a lovely glow over the scene that Carlos decided to experiment with his first ever double exposure. To mark the fiftieth anniversary, a new category, the People’s Choice Award, was introduced and the winner was decided by an international public vote. î “e inaugural award went to Marsel van Oosten for his picture of a Japanese macaque examining his prize after snatching a tourist's mobile phone. Winning and highly commended images from the competition will be on shown until 8 March 2015 at the Natural History Museum at Tring, marking the beginning of the exhibition’s UK and international tour. â–

Rackham’s artworks, synonymous with childhood fantasy and imagination, are considered leading works from the Edwardian ‘Golden Age’ of illustration. î “e collection spans his 40 year career, including some of his earliest works such as î “e Irish Dragoon in 1897 and his final set of illustrations for î “e Wind in the Willows in 1940. î “e exhibition, entitled î “rough the Looking Glass: Illustrations by Arthur Rackham, will include 15 original books on display, including A Christmas Carol, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, A Midsummer-Night’s Dream, Mother Goose: î “e Old Nursery Rhymes, Hansel and Gretel & Other Tales and Rip Van Winkle. It will also include a story tree where young visitors can sit and read the illustrated books, and create their own stories using our character wheel. To coincide with the exhibition, the River & Rowing Museum will be hosting an event, Illustrating Arthur Rackham, on Saturday 21 February 2015 from 10.30am - 2.30pm. î “e morning will include a lecture and practical workshop, exploring
' & (
Rackham’s technique and other graphic illustration methods using pencil, ink and watercolour. Eloise Chapman, Curator at the River & Rowing Museum, says: ‘We are thrilled to have such iconic work at the Museum - Rackham’s work resonates with adults and children alike. Although his illustrations are almost a century old, they are still a definitive source of imagination and fantasy. Whether you read Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows, or Grimm’s Fairy Tales, these illustrations provided a window into another world. î “is is a major exhibition for us, and we are delighted to launch into 2015 with Rackham.â€? î “e collection has been loaned by Rackham collector Ann Haley, and will be on display at the Museum from now until 31 May 2015. î “e exhibition will include a short film about Rackham’s life and hands-on material for younger visitors. î “e award-winning River & Rowing Museum, ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by î “e Times, announced record visitor numbers last year and looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed programme for the whole family. â–

River & Rowing Museum to present major exhibitions by local artists this spring: Forest to Furniture and Artists & Studios
T
he River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-ames, is delighted to announce an exhibition programme including the work of two award-winning local residents, exploring the interconnection between creative processes and the environment that surrounds them.
PhiliP Koomen: Forest to Furniture From 14 February until 7 June To celebrate 40 years of working in Henley-On-ames, Philip Koomen’s new exhibition at the River & Rowing Museum examines the relationship between forestry, design and craftsmanship in wood and the creative process. e work on display will demonstrate the rich diversity of furniture by this designer and master craftsman, acknowledged as one of Britain’s finest craftsmen and recognised for ‘excellence in design’ by Her Majesty the Queen. e exhibition will survey a wide range of commissions, including ecclesiastical work from Dorchester Abbey through to exquisite Egyptian-style cabinets. e exhibition will showcase his extraordinary achievements in a career spanning 40 years. Projects on display will illustrate the evolution of Philip’s work, including his pioneering semi-bespoke range from the 1980s, his sculptural furniture from the 1990s notably the iconic Pondlife bench - and the development of a local cycle system to source under-utilized timber from local woodlands. A highlight and one of Koomen’s most recent pieces, the OneOak table made from a 222-year- old oak from Blenheim Palace, will be housed in the Museum alongside other award-winning designs. e exhibition will include Koomen’s work with lesser-known species of wood. Two major commissions from the International Hay Literary Festival, including a model of the 8-metre-long Wave & Splash bench in tulipwood and the chair design for the stage furniture, will be on display. 2 4 f e b rU A rY 2 01 5
e exhibition also features a series of experiments in wood, Ideas in the Making, a research project supported by Arts Council England, which shows how ideas begin and questions the boundaries between art, craft and design. Koomen has developed a range of interactive adult and children’s activities in collaboration with the Oxfordshire-based woodland charity, Sylva Foundation. is includes a talk and activity morning, e OneOak Project: following the full life story of one oak tree, by Jen Hurst, on 21 March to demonstrate the link between forestry and wooden objects.
Artists & studios: PrivAte views by simon murison-bowie Opens 7 March until 31 May e winner of Oxfordshire Artweeks’ Mary Moser Prize, Simon Murison-Bowie, will be showing rare images of artists working in their studios, revealing the relationship between them and the space they inhabit during their creative process. e exhibition will explore workspaces that have become special ‘natural habitats’ to the people who create them and create in them. is show looks at the wealth of talent in Oxfordshire, highlighting some of the region’s finest artists. e photographs extend the physical experience of Philip Koomen’s exhibition into the studios and workshops of other artists and crafts people, giving a glimpse of the absorption of the individual involved in creative processes of all kinds. e award-winning River & Rowing Museum, ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by e Times, looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed programme for the whole family. ■

Figuratively Speaking Gallery Rouge introduces the classical beauty of the human form through the disarming gaze of two twentieth century artists; the perfect antidote to the era of home technology
A
new generation of painters are claiming the figurative genre from the passages of history and appointing it with refreshing modernity. Too often classical is misplaced as old fashioned. Empowered by talent and obsessed with beauty, artists Talantbek Chekirov and Charlotte Greene have recently joined the ranks at Gallery Rouge and have quickly seduced collectors with soft strokes and lingering looks. As Francesca Gavin, curator of the Soho Few genres are better able to tell a story as well as figurative, by inviting our imagination to will the outcome of an intimate moment House Group observes, “As the classical education of the past becomes defunct, the visual references of the ruins of history are ripe for reinvention”. Indeed Chekirov and Greene have not abandoned the traditional devices of figurative portraiture; a
chaise longue is replaced by a comfortable arm chair, a flowing dress updated with a short shift. This is the new zeitgeist, firmly placing human attitudes in soft yet unwavering focus. Drama also hides beyond the edge of the canvas, waiting to enthral a captive audience in private silence. Few genres are better able to tell a story as well as figurative, by inviting our imagination to will the outcome of an intimate moment. Our gaze is Chekirov and Greenes reward for years of dedication to patient observation. Born in 1971 in the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Talantbek Chekirov’s works are extracts of his rich and broadly situated ideas concerning the ideal notion of beauty in painting infused by his knowledge of anatomy, graphics and composition. Chekirov approaches painting as an artisan, drawing on his background in theatrical painting and constructive art. This tactile proposition is refreshing; our homes are now cluttered with plastic screens and remote controls which beep and flash, disrupting the chance we may take to pause or relax.

in the selection of Charlotte Greene upholds his philosophy that fine and ornamental art is fundamental to the decorative scheme of the home. Undoubtedly a pivotal year for the future of figurative art Greene, born in Cumbria, also counts 1971 as the year of her birth. Encouraged as a child by her own artistic mother, Greene’s arrival as a professional painter was preceded by years of deliberate gradual development. Merging family commitments whilst augmenting and enhancing her natural ability, Greene fine-tuned the integration of domestic life with creative ambition. The artist acknowledges the complex and multi-faceted role of the contemporary woman; her heroines possess style as well as substance reflecting the hope to be intelligent, desirable, maternal and successful. With ever increasing demands on our homes to accommodate a multitude of shifting functions we feel pressure in defining decor; shelter, private restaurant, hotel and increasingly office space. All of this serves to demonstrate the growing trend for receding boundaries between form and function. To challenge this for so many now, walls are not just filled with colour or pattern but with purpose through the artwork they hold. As Chohan succinctly articulates, “collectors are engaging our services to assist in reclaiming their homes from technology, home working and the monotony of domestic chores. Our purpose is to help accomplish a beautiful and surprising environment in which to live, and figurative painting remains a vital offering from our portfolio.” Left: Charlotte Greene ‘Glamour II’ Original Oil 31x42 inches £1,695; Below:Talantbek Chekirov ‘Stay Here’ Original Oil 50x50 inches £1,695
I hear very often from our clients that art is personal and they won’t know the painting they are looking for until they see it Gallery Rouge owner Kuldip Chohan elaborates that living with art should sooth, enhance, enliven and reflect the mood of the home owner, “I hear very often from our clients that art is personal and they won’t know the painting they are looking for until they see it. I opened my galleries in St. Albans and Harpenden to provide comfortable yet neutral spaces in which to experience the power and quality of the artworks for the first time, but myself and the consultants never forget that we are merely temporary carers of the works before we help find them a permanent home”. cross the country, Buckinghamshire leads the way in terms of the number of new businesses started and it also boasts the fourth most productive economy in Britain. With such a great track record in the county, this might be just the time to consider starting a new venture with your partner or sibling. For some individuals, the vision will be to create a family firm that will last for generations, while others will simply wish to achieve success and sell the business to fund future projects or life dreams. Whichever is your goal, corporate lawyer Simon Deans, partner at leading Buckinghamshire law firm B P Collins LLP, has some words of advice. When you start a business, the focus tends to be on the immediate tasks in hand –funding and product development, customer service, employees and premises. Exit planning is likely to be a long way down the list yet, at a time of growing acquisition activity, an attractive offer can create unexpected divisions between business founders and stakeholders, including management and investors. While most company founders believe they share objectives, they should ask themselves what would happen if an offer of £5 million was made for the business. How would this fit with any long-term objectives? Is it the intention to pass the company to the next generation? Would all the participants be aligned on the outcome? ese questions underline the importance of discussing issues early on so the business owners discover any divergence in long term-goals. e future outcome is just one of many areas which need careful consideration. For example, when setting up the company structure many husband and wife partnerships will each award themselves shares. It’s something that can deliver tax benefits but it is also a move which can be fraught with disaster if the couple fall out or get divorced, with huge implications for the business, its employees and its customers. Employing family members can also be a challenge. While it may seem an obvious choice to offer a job to a newly-graduated 2 8 F e b rU A rY 2 01 5
offspring or an unemployed sibling, what happens if errors are made or the business is sold? Just because they are related, it doesn’t mean family members won’t feel aggrieved at the potential loss of a future career, especially if they are watching a parent walk off with a significant sum in their pocket. Family or not, they may demand to be treated like any other employee or expect a share of the proceeds and if the situation isn’t handled correctly then the wider relationship could be damaged and any sale compromised. Ongoing dialogue between stakeholders and legal advisers is essential to ensure potential issues are acknowledged and dealt with early on to head off potential problems. After all, a business owner who decides to announce his impending retirement doesn’t want to discover when it’s too late that no-one else in the family wants to take over. When considering an exit plan, it’s important to step away from day-to-day operations and ensure that all issues such as refinancing activity, share buy-back or ventures into new markets have been correctly managed and completed. An experienced lawyer will help you have open and honest discussions with all concerned on a regular basis to ensure an action plan is in place and any issues are addressed. is is important because any potential buyers will always undertake rigorous due diligence prior to acquisition. Any problems could not only delay the sale but result in a drop in price or, in the worst case, a lost deal. With the economy on the rise, business acquisition activity is picking up significantly and even if selling isn’t in your plan today – ensuring everything is in order might just make the difference between maximising the value of the business – and losing a life-changing opportunity. ■

newland college A new independent school in Buckinghamshire, Newland College opens in September 2015
i
n an area as well-served for quality independent schools as Buckinghamshire, it might seem a challenge to stand out from the crowd. Yet this ought not to be a problem for Newland College, opening this September in Chalfont St Giles, when it becomes the first day and boarding school in the county to offer the International Baccalaureate to students from the age of 11. Newland College will celebrate the traditional strengths of the English boarding school system, such as a rigorous academic focus stemming from a challenging but supportive community, as well as embracing sporting, cultural and performing arts clubs and events. But one way it will differ from other schools will be its international attitude. is is codified in the International Baccalaureate, in the academic curriculum and outside it, which is seen as an unparalleled preparation for university and life beyond. But Newland College’s international focus is also grounded in the global connections of the founding team, who have taught over the past few decades at schools in the UK, Australia, India, Turkey, Finland and elsewhere. Darlene Fisher, the head of Newland College, identifies another differentiating factor in Newland College’s commitment to helping young people develop personal strengths such as confidence and self-awareness. She says, “we emphasise whole-child development. We teach children to have the resilience they will need to flourish, both in their IB studies, but perhaps most importantly, when they reach university and beyond. “is sounds like a new idea in education but when you set out what it means, you realise it’s common-sense. Having said that, it’s something very few schools are dealing with in a holistic way. If you build personal strength, a student can take on academic challenges and the unknowns of the future. We bring this in a greater depth to the students at Newland College.”
Our fOcus is students and parents Another difference between Newland College and some more traditional schools is the belief that the learning community extends to the families of the students who attend the College. Parents and siblings have been welcomed at a number of open days in recent months. Darlene estimates that she and her team have met hundreds of local parents since the school announced plans to open in September 2015. She hopes this interest from parents is maintained for the long term. Newland College is set in 100 acres of Chilterns parkland, with facilities being refurbished from the home of a former university campus. From these buildings, state of the art classrooms, science labs, a lecture theatre and library are already taking shape. e space available also means Newland College can offer parents and students flexible options, depending on their needs. Students can choose full boarding for a whole term at a time, going home for holidays, or they could be a day student and occasionally decide to stay overnight. Darlene expects to have students boarding during the week, especially perhaps when they are spending a lot of time on a school project, such as a play. ere is even space available for day students to have their own study space in the school building, which they can use in their free time for better study and reflection. Looking across rolling grassland from a student boarding room that is awaiting refurbishment, Darlene says, “it’s hard to believe we’re just 45 minutes from London. We have access to one of the world’s most prestigious cities along with the peace and quiet of the countryside. Buckinghamshire provides a most idyllic setting.” ■

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SCHOOL PETER HAMILTON, HEADMASTER OF HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S BOYS’ SCHOOL Making the right choice of school for your child is a daunting prospect. With so many excellent independent secondary schools available, all displaying an impressive pedigree, it is easy to become overwhelmed when choosing the school that will be best for your child in terms of academic fulfilment and personal development
B
y now you will have visited numerous open days, acquired packs of prospectuses and met multitudes of inspirational children and teachers. Further, you will be facing the fact that most independent schools have small class sizes, exceptional exam results, motivated staff, an extensive range of extracurricular activities, a cabinet full of trophies, and more! So, how do you best make an informed decision? Primarily, choosing a school is about choosing an academic ethos that will enable your child to succeed, not just in their exams, but in their lives after education. Most schools supply an information book alongside their prospectus and this should explain the how each curricular subject is taught and what exactly is on offer. Some schools expect pupils to drive their own learning; others may have a more creative, or project focused, approach. Some schools will offer little or no flexibility when selecting examination subjects; others may afford students a variety of choices. Knowing your child’s areas of strength, you should be looking to choose an approach that will engage them and
4 2 F e b rU A rY 2 01 5
encourage them to learn throughout their life. A child’s schooldays, however, are not merely about absorbing knowledge or acquiring grades. Ensuring that the school has the correct type of pastoral support and care for your child is paramount to their success and happiness. For example, how are classes set? Ability setting may be too competitive for some; geographical location ensures classmates are close to each other both inside and outside of school, better encouraging the kind of lifelong friendship that schools inspire. Additionally, how pupils are supported through exams – planning, revision strategies, stress management – and the UCAS process, should form part of your decisionmaking. At 11, this may seem early, but it is certainly not premature. Before you know it, you’ll be watching them receive their exam results and waving them off to University. In the case of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, we admit the brightest boys, and at every stage of their development our curriculum is expressly designed to keep them involved, stimulated and eager to learn. We are known for our academic excellence and the vast majority of our students go on to their first choice university, with exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge. We produce confident and self-motivated young men who are fully prepared for the challenges of the future. We have a strong and supportive multicultural community at our core. MATILDA THE MUSICAL
C
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MANUEL HARLAN
apturing the imagination of young and old alike, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is still playing to packed houses at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Seen by over 1.5million people since it transferred to the West End in October 2011, the production was commissioned by the RSC and played to sold-out audiences at the RSC’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratfordupon-Avon for twelve weeks from November 2010 to January 2011. In 2014 Matilda The Musical celebrated its 1000th performance in London. Tickets are now on sale until 20 December 2015. Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, Matilda The Musical is the captivating musical masterpiece written by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus. The multi-award-winning production revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dares to change her destiny. During 2015, the London and Broadway productions of Matilda The Musical will be joined by the US tour opening in Los Angeles at the end of May and the Australian premiere in Sydney this August. Matilda Shapland, Violet Tucker, Tasha Chapple and Lottie Sicilia all currently share the title role of Matilda in London. The four girls are joined by Craige Els who stepped into the girdle of Miss Trunchbull in September 2014. Miss Honey is played by Haley Flaherty, Mr Wormwood is played by James Clyde and Mrs Wormwood is played by Kay Murphy. Matilda The Musical has now received a total of 50 awards in Stratford-upon-Avon, London and New York. Sweeping the board at the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking seven awards – the most awards won by a single show at the time - Matilda The Musical has gone on to take Broadway by storm, winning four Tony Awards® and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater for each of the four girls sharing the title role. The New York production of Matilda The Musical opened in March 2013 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre and the Australian premiere will take place at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in August 2015. As Matilda The Musical continues to delight new audiences worldwide, now is the perfect time to book and see the original production, right in the heart of London’s West End.

MADAM BUTTERFLY ‘The envy of any opera house anywhere’
N
o opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly. Set in Japan at the turn of the century, this tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music. The differences in attitudes and styles of East and West are skilfully woven together in Puccini’s ravishing score – a score which has become one of the most loved opera scores of all time with such loved pieces as Madam Butterfly’s opening number Ancora un passo (“One step more). The magnificent love duet which closes the first act and Butterfly’s celebrated solo ‘One Fine Day’, in which she shows her unwavering belief that Pinkerton will return to her, are just two of the greatest moments. And when, after several years, Pinkerton eventually returns with his American wife, Butterfly realises she has been betrayed and the opera moves to its powerful and tragic conclusion. Since its world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in February 1998, this truly sensational production of Puccini’s tragic masterpiece has left an indelible impression on the hearts and minds of over four hundred thousand people, receiving the highest critical acclaim wherever it has been performed. By huge popular demand this unique and spectacular ‘in the round’ staging of Madam Butterfly now returns to London for a limited period only and will be performed between 28 February to 15 March. Once more, the arena floor of the Royal Albert Hall will be flooded with water to create David Roger’s stunning design where Madam Butterfly’s house is perched on stilts
above the shimmering surface of a traditional Japanese water garden. This exquisite design is at the heart of the production and will not fail to impress! The role of Madam Butterfly is one of “Enchanting, the most celebrated roles in the operatic emotionally canon and has previously been performed charged by such stellar names as Maria Callas. production is In this production, the title role revelation a will be performed be shared Daily Mail by international opera stars will be shared by NamYoung Kim, Hyeseoung Kwon and Myung-Joo Lee. MICHELIN GUIDE GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND 2015
The Michelin Guide has announced the winners in the 2015 star ratings. The Michelin guide is the Oscars of the foodie world, with stars being dished out to UK restaurants after extensive inspections, & has the power to make or break a restaurant as the ‘Michelin stars’ accolade is gifted or taken away.
T
he Michelin Guide 2015 also reflects our changing dining habits. “In the last year we’ve seen the rise of relaxed counter dining but also the opening of some big brasseries said Michelin guide editor Rebecca Burr. “Dining is becoming a less structured, less formal affair reflecting the way we live our lives. London in particular has never offered so much choice - there really is something for everyone and for every occasion, with a number of exciting new
restaurant openings. It’s no surprise that the capital is one of the most exciting cities in the world for food. Several of the London restaurants gaining Michelin stars are in their first year of trading: Jason Atherton’s City Social, Simon Rogan’s Fera at Claridge’s and Karam Sethi’s Gymkhana. City Social is the third of Jason Atherton’s Social establishments to gain a Michelin star, following Pollen Street Social and Social Eating House.

Who’s the chef? Nieves Barragan Mohacho Why it’s rated:There’s an enormous amount of love for the original Barrafina, even with all the excitement for their new restaurant. The most egalitarian of establishments, you turn up and you wait in the (always long) queue for a place up at the counter. But the daily changing menu is always worth it.
Who’s the chef? Paul Walsh Why it’s rated: Jason Atherton brought in the former sous chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Royal Hospital Road to head up the kitchen on the 24th floor of Tower 42.Yet another London restaurant that puts paid to the lie that high rise restaurant are just about the view and not the food. Walsh’s cooking was a little too polished for some, but his strawberry souffle is worth going for alone.
Who’s the chef? Isaac McHale Why it’s rated: Following last year’s guide, there was general agreement that the biggest omission by far was The Clove Club. Thankfully, this year Michelin have seen to rectify this mistake following a year when, by all accounts, the restaurant has been going from strength to strength.

Who’s the chef? Simon Rogan is the main man here and shares the kitchen with executive chef Dan Cox Why it’s rated: All eyes were on whoever was going to follow Gordon Ramsay into this grande dame of London hotels. Rogan may have stripped away some of the more formal aspects of dining here, but his rigorous approach to ingredients informs the menu making this one of London’s must-try restaurants.

Who’s the chef? Chef-patron Karam Sethi Why it’s rated: This topped many a “best restaurant last year and was a clear winner in our own readers’ award and also was also the best-reviewed in 2013. So in many ways it’s the least surprising addition to the list this year. Karam Sethi already had a start under his belt with Trishna and he cemented his success with this modern Indian restaurant. Who’s the chef? James Knappett Why it’s rated: This was a game-changer when it opened at the back of Bubbledogs. Run by James in the kitchen and his wife Sandia front of house and head sommelier, there are just 19 seats, all up at the counter, watching food being made in front of you. A deserved winner of a new star.

Afternoon Tea at Balthazar
Balthazar celebrates its second anniversary this month and in its two years in Covent Garden, it has established its reputation as a firm favourite amongst London’s fashion fraternity and tastemakers.
I
n celebration of this anniversary, Balthazar has collaborated with renowned British fashion designer Matthew Williamson to create an afternoon tea. Working with the Balthazar pastry chefs, Williamson has created an offering inspired by his latest Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Matthew Williamson’s collection references the relaxed glamour, reminiscent of David Bailey’s shots of Marie Helvin in his book, Chasing Rainbows and has inspired the selection of pastries, and exclusive cocktail designed by Matthew Williamson. Available from 3pm to 5pm every day (including weekends), the afternoon tea at Balthazar is a feast of perennial favourites like cucumber, smoked salmon and egg mayonnaise sandwiches, hand-crafted cakes, freshly-baked Irish buttermilk scones, Postcard teas and herbal infusions (a fully gluten-free version of this tea is also available). The Matthew Williamson Afternoon Tea at Balthazar is available from 6th February, through London Fashion Week and until 1st May 2015. Brian Silva, legendary Bar Manager at Balthazar, has also been brought into the creative fold. Wanting to incorporate the floral elements and soft coral and pink colours seen in the designers collection, he and Matthew have come up with Chasing Rainbows, a refreshing mixture of Pinky vodka, Lillet Blanc, yellow Chartreuse, crystallised rose petals and brut Champagne which will be available in the tea and on the bars cocktail menu. Matthew Williamson comments “I was honoured to be invited to help celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Balthazar. I’ve had the pleasure of being a guest many times and love its convivial and fun atmosphere. Afternoon tea is a distinctly British tradition so I am delighted to be given the opportunity to put my unique spin on it.”

colourS e focus is on safari shades as well as summery pastels, inspired by the jungle theme and ranging from nude and mint to apricot. Accents are added by a coral red. orthaven Care Homes is currently building a new, high quality care home in Chalfont St Peter, and looked to the pupils of a local primary school, Robertswood School, to solve the problem of what to call the new home. A competition was set, and the pupils in Key Stage 2 enthusiastically took part. With so many interesting entries to choose from, the impressed Porthaven senior management team of John Storey, Marlyn MacDougall and Sean Kime had a tough time settling on the name. But from a shortlist of three, one stood out – ‘Woodland Manor’ was chosen as the name for the new care home, and the winning entry was submitted by Hettie Ridout. Hettie’s winning suggestion will now be widely publicised as the Porthaven Care Group prepares to create awareness of this, its newest location and care option for those in the local community. Traditionally, Orthodontists have successfully used “functional appliancesâ€?. However, there are Mandibular Advancement Appliance, (MAA), which are a simple, non-invasive complementary treatment for snoring. î “ey can also help with the management of tooth grinding and as a treatment for jaw pain, also known as TMJ or TMJD.
SO, WHAT CAUSES SNORING EXACTLY? During sleep, the lower jaw and tongue can fall back, reducing the size of the airway in the throat. î “e throat muscles also relax during sleep, reducing eďŹƒciency at maintaining an open airway. î “is narrowed airway means the lungs need to draw air at a higher velocity in order to get the required amount of oxygen into the lungs. î “e increased airflow causes soft tissues in the throat and behind the tongue to vibrate – snoring!
SO, HOW DOES THE MAA WORK? î “ese are custom made dental appliances that are worn during sleep. î “e Appliance is inserted in the mouth just before sleeping. î “e MAA appliances work by posturing the lower jaw forward. As the jaw comes forward so the tongue follows the inner surface of the lower teeth drawing the tongue forward. î “e muscles and soft tissues below the jaw are also stretched. î “is jaw and tongue advancement places the patient in the “recovery positionâ€? and gives a widened airway at the back of the throat. Since the muscles are stretched and the jaw is forward, it is impossible to snore. î “e appliances only work when they are worn! Try making yourself snore with your lips together and the jaw held forward. As a patient, you will need a well cared for mouth with teeth in both jaws. It is advisable to have a check up with your dentist before treatment is commenced and to continue regular maintenance once the appliances are fitted. Scrupulous attention to mouth care is essential to maintain the teeth as these support the appliances. Changes in tooth anatomy following dental treatment may cause the appliance not to fit and require a remake of the MAA appliance. You must always take the MAA to any dental visit.
WHAT WILL THE APPLIANCE FEEL LIKE? î “e appliances are like mouth jewellery. î “e Appliance is hidden within the mouth resting on the teeth. î “e jaw can be opened and moved from side to side but cannot drop backward. î “e lips can usually be closed. î “e appliance may feel tight against the teeth at the start. It takes 2-3 nights of consistent wear to get used to the appliance. In the morning the teeth may feel a little dierent to begin with and the jaw joints may also feel stretched. Occasionally the bite will feel altered but usually settles within minutes of the appliance removal.
HOW QUICKLY DO THEY WORK? Usually a change will be noticed as soon as the appliance is worn. In some patients a gradual jaw advancement or slight altering of the jaw balance is required. What is the success rate? î “e reported success rate for MAA’s in snoring is around 90% providing the appliance is worn, especially if accompanied by other measures e.g. weight loss and regular exercise. What are the advantages of this treatment method? î “e treatment is non-invasive, reversible, and delivered as an outpatient. No surgery is involved. î “e appliances are inconspicuous in the mouth and can complement other treatments. â– If you have any further question, please speak to your dentist or you can contact us. Have a great half term! î€ anks, Shameek Popat

Why not join the Conservatory Party? A ccording to Wikipedia “a manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.” If and when replacing a conservatory with a modern thermally efficient double glazed one, or adding new
glass extensions like conservatories and orangeries, the manifesto in such circumstances is clearly going to be more tailored to one or two individuals tastes, needs and requirements, plus probably the quality of living these individuals want for their family, friends and visitors. Consequently to ensure any new or replacement conservatory adds valuable high quality living space that is usable 24/7 to your home, here is a brief summary of the Conservatory Party’s manifesto to ensure you get what you expect, and don’t end up with an empty room with an unpleasant living environment:• No conservatory to be too hot in summer and/or too cold in winter • All conservatories must be leak proof, plus as draught proof as possible • All conservatories need to be double glazed with high performing Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacer bars and soft coat heat retentive glass to prevent too much heat loss or too much solar gain • Any glass extension to be designed bespoke to your property, so that it looks part of the initial build and not an after-thought. • Important that bricks (or render) not only match, but so do the brick courses or render painted same colour as existing dwelling

• Be sure of the quality of workmanship and product by visiting reference sites and the installers showroom before placing any order • The glass used in any conservatory must all be toughened safety glass and have a high specification, and when conservatories are south facing, the exterior glass to a have a heat reflective coating • The concrete floor to contain 65mm-100mm deep proven floor insulation such as Celotex or Jabolite • Wherever possible all conservatory roofs to be double glazed with thermally efficient glass and not have noisy and ugly looking polycarbonate • Any side or dwarf walls will conform to current building regulations for extensions and have thermally efficient cavity wall insulation • Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period that is worth the paper it is written on (so before joining the Conservatory Party it is important to make sure your installer is well established, trustworthy and has a proven reputation for build quality and fulfilling warranties)
exterior doors between the existing property and the new conservatory. Such structures must be under 30 square metres, and not project more than 4m on detached houses and no more than 3m on semi-detached houses. These glass extensions must have walls that are at least 50% double glazed and translucent roof of 70% or more. Find out about the planning rules and Building Regulations before ordering a new conservatory Consequently, if you do decide to join “the Conservatory Party” and benefit from the extra high quality living space a conservatory affords, make sure that your conservatory supplier and installer can and will fulfil every one of the above Conservatory Party manifesto pledges.
Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period • All new conservatories must have sufficient ventilation i.e. have enough opening vents on the upright parts, and at least one double glazed roof vent (Larger conservatories will need more than one roof vent) • Conservatories must have enough independent heating so that they are warm and comfortable throughout all winters and on cold summer evenings • Ensure the ground workers, double glazing fitters, plumbers, bricklayers, plasterers are experienced and that the electrician is fully qualified and accredited • All new conservatories being built under permitted development (i.e. without planning permission or Building Regulation Approval) must have compliant

ver the last 10 years, the ‘work from home’ community has grown and more recently, truly exploded, as has the requirement for garden offices, multi-functional rooms and granny annexes. It is now common place for people to either run their own small businesses or spend at least 1 day in the week working from home. As a consequence no longer do people want to battle on and make do with the kitchen table or pokey, dark study or spare room, constant interruptions and distractions. Expectations have radically changed. Now eye-catching, attractive design is at the forefront when considering to invest in a garden room (environmentally friendly is really a given these days), combined with sustainability, light and warmth year round use and versatility - to make them into what one wants whenever circumstances or needs change. ere are a plethora of garden room companies and designs out there now that put to shame many new home developments, as do the efforts of the companies and teams of craftsmen and women that work, many through all weathers, to ensure their Customers get the best space for their investment, particularly given it’s both an emotional and financial one; so it’s got to be right. Ultimately however, when selecting one, you want to know that you are in safe, knowledgeable and professional hands. investing wisely

magine if last year you received a phone call saying there was an excellent opportunity to buy a pair of properties for £150,000 which would cost £50,000 to finish and be worth £270,000 and produce rent of £13,740pa. To many people to make a gain of £70,000 in twelve months and have a return of over 6% on their money would be enough but theses Investors are currently on the brink of gaining planning for two more units on the site..which will see the return on their investment in two years be £140,000 and a 7.5% return on their money. Another couple were called and offered a deal where they invested £150,000 for twelve months and receive back £250,000. It all sounds to good to be true – which is the biggest problem that Mark Warren the Managing Director of the Jenner group of companies faces.
“Late last year we acquired a farmhouse with potentially six barns for conversion to residential use for £500,000 and which the end values are close to £3m on behalf of a development company and three private investors have put in £295,000 for a 12% return and a profit share. We are in the process of acquiring another site with planning for 7 units for £580,000 and have a private investor putting in £250,000. “ Before an Investor commits to a project they are provided with comprehensive costings and viability studies and invited to do their own research and due diligence. ey are also encouraged to seek independent legal advice on the loan agreements and contracts that are provided. “It has to be stressed that our services is NOT for everyone. Property investment is not covered by the Financial Conduct Authority and monies can be tied up for months at a time. We
A couple offered a deal where they invested £150,000 for twelve months and receive back £250,000. “Since 1987 we have been helping individuals to identify and acquire investment opportunities but since the Credit Crunch we have moved much more into property development and work with a bank of established developers who are looking to use private investors rather than fickle banks. “We have some clients on their fourth and fifth projects with us and they are quietly spreading the word with their friends and associates. e typical Jenner Investor is 45+, successful elsewhere, typically have £250,000-£1,000,000 available and have an interest in being involved in property investment development but not to the extent that they want to be hands-on on a site. “At the moment the spread of rates being paid is from 10-25%pa but we work on a case by case scenario and sometimes it is down to how individual investors and developers get on. “ 8 8 F e b rU A rY 2 01 5
also won’t deal with individuals who are using the last of their savings or are remortgaging a house to raise monies. Typically it takes a couple of months from an expression of interest until an investor is in a position to actual invest in a project and even then the monies are only released on Surveyors valuations and inspections”. If you have a serous interest in being involved in property investment or development and £100,000+ available you should be talking to this chap! ■

CHOOSING THE PERFECT
PLAYHOUSE
FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES – AND YOU! is entirely up to you – and your child! You can paint the interior walls in any colour you chose, from pale blue to bright red. You could even wall paper the inside of your playhouse for that real cosy, lived in feeling. Depending on what your child, children or grandchildren plan to use the playhouse for will determine how you furnish it – it may be a castle with a princess hiding in the highest room in the tallest tower, a cowboy saloon, or somewhere to do their homework. Adding a comfy sofa or chairs will really bring the house to life, whilst a practical desk will provide ample space to study. You could even include a bed for those summer sleep overs! With a little help from The Playhouse Company you can create the perfect playhouse that will take your child all the way from their toddler days to their teenage years.
One of its aims is to create a house that can be used for as long as possible, even becoming a “teenage hideaway”
C
hoosing a play or tree house for your children or grandchildren can be overwhelming. What size and style is best for your little ones? How will it fit into your garden and will it complement its existing design? A playhouse can also be a significant investment, so ensuring it is the right one, and is built to last, is imperative. The Playhouse Company, a designer and builder of beautiful wooden play and tree houses, has vast experience in bringing playhouse dreams to life. The process begins with your initial idea. The Playhouse Company then uses this vision, taking into consideration the age of the children and the layout of the garden (which is either through a photograph or a site visit), to create a design. Designs are then translated from sketches into a beautiful detailed structure. One of its aims is to create a house that can be used for as long as possible, even becoming a “teenage hideaway” in later years or incorporating garden storage making it a dual purpose playhouse. The Playhouse Company can work with all types of gardens & any size, including those with uneven surfaces in which case it creates a sub base. It has also been asked on many occasions to incorporate existing features into the design, for example building a house around an ancient tree, along an old wall, or in a compact corner. It is the company’s bespoke service that allows you to create the perfect house for your garden as well as for your children. What you do with your child’s play or tree house once The Playhouse Company has delivered and installed it,

anine Stone is one of the country’s foremost interior designers, her acclaimed practice is supported by a dedicated team of talented and very approachable designers, architects and craftsmen who strive to deliver beautifully crafted homes of extraordinary quality and uniqueness. e company specialises in developing, refurbishing, designing and building elegant private residences for the most discerning clients.
ProPerty Case study What it Was: a Pretty CoaCh house in the home Counties e property originally comprised two former coach houses built in the early 20th century, which had previously been linked by a hall and staircase when it was developed earlier in the 1980’s. ere is a small private garden and the property is reached via a long driveway. Originally it was a family house of three to four bedrooms, which were modest in size and the successful property entrepreneur owners of this handsome coach house, which was purchased some years ago, were seeking to reinvent the space so it worked better for their busy lifestyles. e Brief asked that the new design scheme inject an entirely different mood and feel from what had gone before. e overall decorative scheme is contemporary with strong references to the elegance of the 1930’s and 1940’s. 9 4 F e b rU A rY 2 01 5
e owners required a principal and guest bedroom for their purposes, but realising this might restrict the appeal of the home in a future sale, they opted for a design where the walk-in dressing room could easily be converted to a third bedroom and the open- plan gym could become a family bathroom. So with this in mind, services were provided close by during the transformational renovation.

Artisans worked on one of a kind designed furniture pieces, architectural details and finishes. e attention to detail was paramount with finely mitred joinery, stone and mirrors to create a seamless elegance throughout the home. Many unique and rare veneers were used including snake wood and these were complimented with layers of lacquer and polished with fine waxes. Lighting, provided by a fully programmed Lutron© system, has been designed to throw pools and drifts of light throughout the property adding drama and atmosphere to specific areas, highlighting works of art and casting a warm and subtle glow to the library, drawing room, entrance hall and bedroom suites. e drawing room, library and study feature dramatic wenge wood flooring in basket weave and herringbone patterns. e sound system and television in the drawing room are cleverly concealed within a floating wall treatment that can be revealed
at the touch of a button. î “e stunning double height hallway with roof top sky lights increase the available natural light and spotlight a beautiful balustrade and staircase, which have been honed from unfinished brass, so in time, will develop a rich natural patina. î “e master bathroom features a white î “asos marble floor with contrasting hand polished dark wood timber panelling. î “e sunken marble bath sets the tone for a spa-inspired retreat and has been designed to fill within a short space of time. î “ere are many concealed storage spaces, cleverly incorporated behind
mirrors to ensure a clutter-free serene mood prevails. LED lighting is integrated behind thinned out panels of marble and work to diuse the light and add to the glamorous mood. Not a conventional kitchen at first glance, the rich colour scheme creates a dramatic statement for the sleek, contemporary space set against a sparkling white î “asos marble floor. Elegant Java-tone panelled cabinetry emphasises a lean aesthetic and glossy claret and ebony wall treatments provide the backdrop to a stunning Baroque mural in the style of Caravaggio. Not just a showpiece kitchen, the design works hard to aid the enthusiastic chef with high end equipment, a professional preparation sink and an integrated, industry standard, Italian manufactured coee machine. î “e Janine Stone architectural design, interior design, construction and project management services were utilised for this project. â–
