THE INTERNET GAVE ME BACK MY LIFE

A

t 19 Ella Woodward was seriously ill. She was in constant pain, incredibly weak and slept 16 hours a day. After hundreds of tests and four months of hospital visits she was finally diagnosed with a rare syndrome, Postural Tachycardia, which effectively breaks down the autonomic nervous system. However, treatments with steroids and the conventional drugs had little effect and the once vivacious part time model and University student became bed bound. Ella turned to the Internet to research different approaches to healing and after months of Googling she came across the inspirational story of an American called Kris Carr who changed her life, overnight. Kris had changed her diet to manage her cancer and after reading her book, Ella felt inspired to see if she could do the same. However, there were one or two fairly major hurdles. Ella hated fruit and vegetables, was a sugar addict and she couldn’t cook! But from that day forward she gave up all meat, dairy, sugar, gluten and processed food and started a food plant based diet. “I could boil pasta and scramble eggs but that was the limit of my cooking expertise and I hadn’t a clue what to eat so I ate the same thing every day…. for weeks. Banana and blueberry porridge and avocado and roasted tomatoes on buckwheat toast. As you can imagine I had serious food envy!’ But something remarkable happened. Ella began to feel better. Her energy returned and she felt excited and encouraged and decided to keep a blog and start trying three new recipes a week. “My Mum is a great cook but I’d never taken the time to learn from her and once I started cooking healthy food she didn’t know that much about it so I taught her more than the other way around. Now I think anyone can cook. e most important thing is to have confidence, experiment and play around with ideas. It makes it more fun if you’re not scared to try new things. Often the weirdest sounding combinations are the most delicious. “I started sharing my way of cooking with family and friends and my brother and sister tried it and loved it too. It made them feel great so they started including more veg, quinoa and brown rice into their diet. “But I also learned there are ways of making favourite foods heathy and delicious. Sweet potato brownies, spicy coconut curries, raw banoffee pie are all things I crave.’

Within weeks Ella’s bog started picking up readers and, incredibly, she now has more than 17 million hits! “I’m not sure whether the internet has made me famous but I am amazed at the number of people who read my blog. It’s really crazy, especially as its people from all over the world. It’s also made me realise how powerful the internet is, without it I have no idea what I’d be doing but I doubt I would have written a book or created an app.’ One of the reasons Ella was so keen to write a book was to help to dispel some of the myths attached to plant based whole food living. “I still can’t quite believe I’m a gluten free vegan but my perceptions changed along the way. It’s not all about bland salad and boiled veg. I’m simply saying there are amazing foods out there which are also amazingly good for you. “I still hate green peppers and I think wheatgrass powder and chlorella are both pretty gross but I don’t miss anything. I absolutely love the way I eat and I wouldn’t change anything about it.’ Ella’s new book, titled Deliciously Ella, brilliantly captures her passion and philosophy for healthy delicious food. It contains a feast of more than 100 brand new recipes from courgette noodles with avocado pesto to zingy key lime pie. She also gives practical tips on store cupboard ingredients and advice on how to whizz up every day meals quickly. “I wouldn’t be without my blender and I adore tahini and Medjool dates. I always have avocados, tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, bananas, oats, brown rice and quinoa in my cupboard. And if I go out to eat I just have all the side dishes. “I have learnt more on this health adventure than I could have possibly imagined and I really want to share this with you. It’s my way of turning something negative into something really positive.” ■

the details Ella’s book is published on 22nd January but this blogging sensation and good food enthusiast - who The Times described as “the new Nigella….a blogger who is going stellar’ - will be visiting Chorleywood on Friday 6th February. If you would like to meet Ella and try a taste of her recipes then contact the Chorleywood Bookshop on 01923 283566. Tickets cost £8 and the book will be available to buy at the special price of £15 (RRP £20). J A N U A RY 20 1 5 1 7

Henley DesIgn Day 2015

I

Let architects and designers inspire you, in Henley Town Hall

f you’re thinking about a major makeover for your home, the Henley Design Day on Saturday 7th March is for you. Come along and meet nearly twenty local architects and other design specialists to talk through your ideas and inspire your creativity. Admission is free. In March last year, around 300 people flocked to the second annual RIBA Henley Design Day and discussed their building needs and desires with architects, interior designers, landscape gardeners, tile and floor specialists, kitchen specialists, design authors, and even planning consultants. In 2015 we will also offer one to one meetings with architects as well as presentations and a competition for the children. Details of this and prizes offered to be confirmed later.

What an architect can bring to your project An RIBA Chartered Practice can help you realise your ambitions and guide you through the design and construction process. Architects provide a service that extends well beyond producing a set of drawings – they can handle the paperwork, bring value for money, imagination and peace of mind to your project, whilst keeping it on track and on budget.

Value for money Architects are professional problem-solvers. eir experience and insight can help stretch what can be achieved within your budget and add value to your project. ey can suggest new ways of utilising space and light, enrich the palette of materials, finishes or fittings, find a builder at the right price, and propose design solutions that will reduce your overall running costs whilst maximising the energy efficiency of your 1 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

home. At a fraction of the cost of your project, an architect’s fees will prove a sound investment.

imagination An architect can lift your project out of the ordinary and help you achieve your aspirations and vision. ey are trained designers who will explore your needs and desires and find inventive and practical ways of enhancing your living environment.

peace of mind When you hire an architect, you have a professional on your side who knows the construction industry inside out. You are working with someone who has undertaken seven years of architectural training – no other building professional is trained in design and construction to such a high level of expertise Architect Mark Shipton of Oxford Architects, who took part in the Design Day said that visitors were surprised at the range of specialisms on offer: ‘whether you need a building conservation expert, are interested in sustainability, refurbishment or self-build – you’ll find an architect to suit your need in Henley Town Hall!’ Mark is Chairman of the RIBA South region which represents around 2,500 architects: ‘e Design Day is a fantastic, unique way for you to come and chat about practical ways to achieve what you want and need from your building.’ ■

Wildlife Wonders The world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to the Natural History Museum at Tring.

T

he acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, showcasing the rich array of life on our planet, reflecting its beauty and also highlighting its fragility, returns to the Natural History Museum at Tring to celebrate its fiftieth year. is collection of more than 100 images uniquely combines the work of talented young photographers, gifted amateurs and leading professionals, all selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity. Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring, Paul Kitching says, ‘I'm delighted that we are able to show the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition again here in the Natural History Museum at Tring. is exhibition is a firm favourite with our visitors and staff alike and I'm always amazed by the quality and diversity of images on display.’ Winners of the grand titles in this year’s milestone competition were announced at a prestigious awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London. American photographer Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 by a panel of international judges for his serene black-and-white image of lions resting with their cubs in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Following the pride for nearly six months, he photographed them in infra-red, which he explains, ‘transforms the light and turns the moment into something primal, biblical almost’. Jim Brandenburg, chair of the judging panel and acclaimed wildlife photographer, said, ‘Nick’s image encapsulated so many elements that demonstrated artistic and technical skill, the sort that takes many years 2 0 j a n u a ry 2 0 15

of professional work to hone and craft as he has done.’ Meanwhile eight-year-old Carlos Perez Naval was awarded Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 for his image of a scorpion soaking up the Sun, Stinger in the Sun. e image shows the scorpion flourishing its sting as a warning to the young photographer, who had found it basking on a flat stone in a rocky area near his home in Torralba de los Sisones, northeast Spain. e late afternoon light was casting such a lovely glow over the scene that Carlos decided to experiment with his first ever double exposure. To mark the fiftieth anniversary, a new category, the People’s Choice Award, was introduced and the winner was decided by an international public vote. e inaugural award went to Marsel van Oosten for his picture of a Japanese macaque examining his prize after snatching a tourist's mobile phone. Winning and highly commended images from the competition will be on shown until 8 March 2015 at the Natural History Museum at Tring, marking the beginning of the exhibition’s UK and international tour. ■

River & Rowing Museum to present major exhibitions by local artists this spring: Forest to Furniture and Artists & Studios

T

he River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-ames, is delighted to announce an exhibition programme including the work of two award-winning local residents, exploring the interconnection between creative processes and the environment that surrounds them.

PhiliP Koomen: Forest to Furniture Opens 14 February until 7 June To celebrate 40 years of working in Henley-On-ames, Philip Koomen’s new exhibition at the River & Rowing Museum examines the relationship between forestry, design and craftsmanship in wood and the creative process. e work on display will demonstrate the rich diversity of furniture by this designer and master craftsman, acknowledged as one of Britain’s finest craftsmen and recognised for ‘excellence in design’ by Her Majesty the Queen. e exhibition will survey a wide range of commissions, including ecclesiastical work from Dorchester Abbey through to exquisite Egyptian-style cabinets. e exhibition will showcase his extraordinary achievements in a career spanning 40 years. Projects on display will illustrate the evolution of Philip’s work, including his pioneering semi-bespoke range from the 1980s, his sculptural furniture from the 1990s notably the iconic Pondlife bench - and the development of a local cycle system to source under-utilized timber from local woodlands. A highlight and one of Koomen’s most recent pieces, the OneOak table made from a 222-year- old oak from Blenheim Palace, will be housed in the Museum alongside other award-winning designs. e exhibition will include Koomen’s work with lesser-known species of wood. Two major commissions from the International Hay Literary Festival, including a model of the 8-metre-long Wave & Splash bench in tulipwood and the chair design for the stage furniture, will be on display. 3 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

e exhibition also features a series of experiments in wood, Ideas in the Making, a research project supported by Arts Council England, which shows how ideas begin and questions the boundaries between art, craft and design. Koomen has developed a range of interactive adult and children’s activities in collaboration with the Oxfordshire-based woodland charity, Sylva Foundation. is includes a talk and activity morning, e OneOak Project: following the full life story of one oak tree, by Jen Hurst, on 21 March to demonstrate the link between forestry and wooden objects.

Artists & studios: PrivAte views by simon murison-bowie Opens 7 March until 31 May e winner of Oxfordshire Artweeks’ Mary Moser Prize, Simon Murison-Bowie, will be showing rare images of artists working in their studios, revealing the relationship between them and the space they inhabit during their creative process. e exhibition will explore workspaces that have become special ‘natural habitats’ to the people who create them and create in them. is show looks at the wealth of talent in Oxfordshire, highlighting some of the region’s finest artists. e photographs extend the physical experience of Philip Koomen’s exhibition into the studios and workshops of other artists and crafts people, giving a glimpse of the absorption of the individual involved in creative processes of all kinds. e award-winning River & Rowing Museum, ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by e Times, looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed programme for the whole family. ■

or Spring Summer 2015 Agent Provocateur follows the dangerous trail of the perfectly executed murder. Inspired by David Lynch’s yynch The Lost Highway and Brian de Palma’s glamorous and murderous thriller Body Double, the collection explores the complex and many-sided woman: coy, duplicitous, siren, saint. With Ellen V Von on Unwerth returning behind the lens to bring her signature sizzle to the collection, a perfect crime is played out in deliciously high drama and heart - racing glamour. Naomi Campbell is Agent Provocateur’s mercurial femme fatale for Spring 2015. With a killer instinct and a body to match, she cloaks herself in only the most devastatingly sensual pieces to commit the perfect crime.

Armed with the trappings of an accomplished slayer – the shovel, the gloves, the knickers – she is a hit woman from whom no one can escape. This is the time that the effervescent effervescent Ellen V Von on Unwerth has shot for Agent Provocateur. Her fizzling sensitivity to female erotic power makes her the perfect artist to capture the adrenaline-fuelled chase for our bodacious killer queen Ms. Campbell. Sarah Shotton’s interest in girl gangs and pulp fiction novels of the early 1960’ s led her on a chase of her own for Spring/Summer 2015: through crimes, punishments and the fascinating women who live for the adrenaline rush, she found the inspiration for her killer collection. Naomi is the ultimate Agent Provocateur woman: witty, gorgeous gorgeous and confident. She is a natural femme effortlessly fortlessly translates the luxury that fatale, a quality which ef is Agent Provocateur.

AVONDALE CARE HOME AWARD-WINNING CARE

T

here are many thousands of care homes in the UK. So you can probably appreciate that when it comes to awards being given out, categories are always hotly contested.

Avondale Care Home in Aylesbury, part of the Porthaven Care Homes group, has built an excellent reputation locally for its expertise in nursing and dementia care for older people in our community. But more recently, the home’s reputation was raised to a national level as Shaun Canavan, Avondale’s Manager was recognised as the best care manager in the UK at the 16th National Care Awards! Shaun’s win was announced at a prestigious gala dinner to celebrate the Awards. Held in London at the end of last year, and hosted by husband and wife TV duo, Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, the event was attended by over 800 people from the care sector. Shaun demonstrated to the panel of independent judges his energy, dedication and passion for care as well as being able to instil these qualities in his team at Avondale, which has around 90 residents and 150 staff. Both the Porthaven care homes in our area, the other being Chiltern Grange in Stokenchurch, have also received other awards for things like organised resident activities and specialist interior design. Sean Kime, a director of Porthaven commented “Porthaven and the team at Avondale are immensely proud of Shaun and 5 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

that his work has been recognised in this way. Shaun is always modest about his contribution but on this occasion we think it’s important to put in the spotlight his work for the benefit of our residents.” Porthaven are also currently building a third brand new care home in Buckinghamshire, Woodland Manor, located in Chalfont St. Peter and due to open in the Autumn of 2015. ■

TOOTH TIPS TO REMEMBER FOR 2015 1. Stay away from starchy foods like chips and crackers – they can be just as bad for your teeth as sweets. 2. Drink plain tea without sugar. It helps cut down on plaque and cavities. 3. Brush after every meal or at least once a day before bedtime. 4. Choose healthy foods like cheese and crunchy vegetables. 5. Never use your teeth to open things. 6. Use a fluoride toothpaste. 7. Don't smoke – and remember that coffee, tea, colas, and soy sauce can stain your teeth. 8. If you can't brush after every meal, try chewing on a piece of sugarless gum or biting into a carrot or apple. 9. Go for brushes with soft nylon bristles. 10. Replace your brush about every three months. 11. Brushes with soft bristles clean as well as hard bristles. 12. Use a mouthguard if you play contact sports. 13. Always wear a seatbelt in your car – it can save your teeth in an accident. 14. Floss every day. 15. See your dentist regularly!

Bexsero: Meningitis B vaccine Meningitis kills more UK children under the age of 5 than any other infectious disease. There are a number of strains of bacteria causing Meningitis, and vaccinations against strains A, C, W135 and Y have been around for a number of years. But a new vaccine, Bexsero has been developed to protect against Meningitis B. Dr Peter Petrie explains more.

What are the risks of contracting Meningitis B? Meningitis B is the leading cause of Bacterial Meningitis and Septicaemia, implicated in 55% of cases. Meningitis kills more UK children under the age of 5 than any other infectious disease. It is estimated that there about 1870 cases of Meningitis B in the UK each year. It predominantly attacks children under the age of 5 and teenagers.

What is Meningitis and septicaeMia? Meningitis means swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. Septicaemia is blood poisoning caused by the same germs. ey can occur together or separately; both are very dangerous and can come on very quickly.

can Meningitis B Be prevented? Vaccines give excellent protection. Vaccines against strains A, C, W135 and Y are widely available, and now there is a vaccine for Meningitis B. Pharmaceutical giant Novartis have developed a vaccine following 20 years of research. e vaccine offers good protection against Meningococcal Group B disease.

is the Bexsero vaccination safe? Yes. ere have been 13 studies on Bexsero including 9 randomised control clinical trials involving nearly 8000 patients over the age of 2 months.

is Bexsero availaBle on the nhs? Bexsero is not currently available on the NHS, however the 5 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

Department of Health are working with the NHS to introduce the Men B vaccine to the NHS childhood vaccine programme as soon as agreement can be made.

Who can Be vaccinated against Meningitis B Infants aged 2 months and older can be vaccinated. Dosing schedules depend on the age of the child. Adolescents and adults can also be vaccinated, however the efficacy for adults aged 50 years and older has not yet been studied.

are there any coMMon side effects froM having the vaccination? ere are a few common side effects; these can include pain and tenderness, redness and slight swelling at the site of the vaccination. Some children have experienced a slight fever.

Why aM i so passionate aBout vaccination? is is a condition that is very dear to me having had two children with bacterial meningitis, both of which thankfully survived. Having just had my two younger children vaccinated against Meningitis B I feel passionate that it should be widely available. ■

DETOX FOODS

Over-indulging on food and alcohol together with late nights over Christmas and New Year, can make you feel bloated, tired, or perhaps you have even put on a pound or two. LEMON Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system. GINGER If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the

immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice. GARLIC Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time. ARTICHOKE If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and

fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver - the body’s main toxin-fighting tool. BEETROOT For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice. GREEN TEA While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease. CABBAGE Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however cabbage is not only good for weight loss - it is also an excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver. FRESH FRUIT Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day. BROWN RICE If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon, and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion. WATERCRESS Like most green herbs and vegetables, watercress is an excellent health-booster and detox food. Firstly, watercress leaves are packed with many vital detoxifying nutrients, including several B vitamins, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and vitamin C. Secondly, watercress has natural diuretic properties, which can help to flush toxins out the body. To reap the benefits of this nutritious food, try adding a handful of watercress to salads, soups and sandwiches.

ith utility bills rising steeply year on year, energy efficient window dressings are the perfect choice to help you make a saving. According to energy regulator Ofgem, the average yearly bill in the UK is £1420 and forecasters from uSwitch.com have predicted that this cost could be as high as £4,185 by 2020. MATERIAL GAIN “It’s very unlikely that you’d throw a bundle of crisp five pound notes out of the window on a regular basis,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, “but that is exactly what you could be doing if your window dressings aren’t energy efficient. “A lot of heat can be lost through windows, especially in older properties with sash or period windows, but you can make a big difference by choosing the right covering. One of the quickest and most affordable ways to insulate your home is to dress your windows with thermal curtains or roman blinds. Simple steps such as choosing a lining with thermal properties for roman blinds and curtains can also make a surprisingly big difference. The extra layer of fabric provides added insulation and gives the window dressing a luxurious padded look. You may be wondering what thermal or interlined actually means? Curtains and roman blinds are generally made up from either two or three layers. A ‘normal’ lined curtain is made up from the face fabric – the one you’ve chosen for its colour or pattern – and a single back lining layer. This can be plain, thermal or blackout. A plain lining will give some protection from heat loss but will primarily help the curtains or roman blind to hang attractively. A thermal lining is a specially coated fabric that will provide increased insulation. Three layer curtains are lined and interlined – this is an extra lining that is sandwiched in between the face fabric and the lining. It’ll make the curtains seem fuller, hang better and of course provide fabulous insulation. All of the fabrics in Hillarys roman blinds collection can be interlined or you could opt for a beautiful made-tomeasure curtain with a thermal lining, so there’s no need to compromise on style over substance. Parts of your home that are going to benefit the most from thermal treatments are generally hallways, rooms with north facing windows, bedrooms and conservatories. Blinds, curtains and shutters are proven to help prevent heat escaping through any windows, resulting in a cosy home and lower bills. IGNITE THEIR IMAGINATIONS

WITH A PLAYHOUSE A playhouse is every child’s dream. A place to call their own, where they can let their imaginations run wild away from the grown-ups! This is what Erica and David Llewellyn wanted for their three year old daughter Phoebe.

hung underneath the steps to add another point of interest to the playhouse. “The team back at The Playhouse Company headquarters were also extremely helpful, offering advice on the many different colours and finishes we could choose from. We have an old copper beech tree, as well as an abundance of purple flowering plants so we wanted the colour of the playhouse to compliment these. The colour we finally chose, purple with cream doors and window frames and white guttering, is the perfect partner for our garden, but is also colourful enough for Phoebe,” adds Erica. Phoebe’s “Bay Tree Cottage” took around two weeks to hand-build at The Playhouse Company’s factory in Herefordshire. It then took just over one day to install into the Llewellyn’s back garden. “It was raining heavily on the day of the installation but that did not deter Richard and his team. The playhouse went up in little over day and as soon as the rain stopped

“W

e had always wanted a playhouse for Phoebe, so as soon as we thought she was old enough to enjoy and appreciate one we started the search,” explains Erica. “We found The Playhouse Company on the Internet and after looking through its range of beautiful houses we settled on a design. Once we had chosen the house we then had to decide where to put it and as our garden is quite uneven it was difficult to find the perfect place. However, we needn’t have worried. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, came to visit us to assess our garden and the suitability of various sites.” By visiting Erica’s garden Richard was not only able to advise on where best to place their chosen playhouse but he was also able to make a few suggestions, which eventually turned their standard playhouse into one with the “wow” factor! Erica continues, “Our only stipulation was that we wanted the playhouse to have two floors, with an external staircase that went to the upper floor. After walking around our garden and inspecting various locations, Richard suggested building the playhouse around an existing old tree and incorporating the tree into the design of the playhouse – it was a fantastic idea!” The final design was a two story “cottage” style playhouse with a front “stable” door, two downstairs windows and two beautifully crafted dormer windows on the second floor. The exterior staircase wound its way around the tree to the upper floor and led to another “stable” door at the side of the house. A swing was also

Phoebe had explored her new house and moved in quite a few of her toys! She takes great pride in her “tree house” as she calls it! “We absolutely love our new playhouse. Not only is it somewhere to inspire Phoebe and encourage her to use her imagination, but it also blends beautifully into our garden without being intrusive,” concludes Erica. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, adds, “A playhouse is the perfect present which will last for years rather than days. They entice children away from the television and help to ignite their imaginations in a way that computer games and TV programmes just cannot.”

KITCHENS are the new living rooms

Y

ou need to decide on the space that is required over and above your units, worktops, appliances and sink unit. For example, if you have children, is extra eating space required? Are you looking to entertain and relax aswell as prepare and cook the evening meal? Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. The interior style of the rest of your home could dictate the style of your kitchen space, especially if it is open-plan, so you need to take this into consideration.

The design of your kitchen can cover a variety of themes... CONTEMPORARY KITCHENS The sleek look will provide instant gratification. Providing a more open feeling adds to the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. CABINETS & WORKTOPS Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Chrome is effective and never dates. Avoid wooden worktops near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. You

On average, people spend in excess of £30,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space. There are a multitude of choices when it comes to creating your dream kitchen... FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN Combining rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. We are talking an Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. Freestanding features and copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger, rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware all combine to give you that French country feel. SHAKER STYLE KITCHEN This design appeals to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillowfronted doors and beautiful woods epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island can make an attractive addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. RETRO KITCHEN A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic

6 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

could also mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces. KITCHEN FLOORING The flooring in your kitchen space is as important as the kitchen itself, so you need to get it right. Take advice from a flooring expert, or consult your kitchen designer. You can find more information and choices on kitchen flooring later in this guide. KITCHEN LIGHTING Safety comes first in any kitchen, so for high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. You can find more information and choices on kitchen lighting later in this guide. A bespoke kitchen will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. You can have it designed especially for your needs and tastes, and built by the best in the business.

appy New Year! With 2015 now in full swing despite the chilly weather there are an abundance of delights to be found to brighten up the winter season. Curly kale is at its very best right now as well as Brussel sprouts, cabbage and Jerusalem artichokes – always great for a warming soup. Pheasant is in full flourish and features fondly on our lunch tasting menu. From afar there is the excitement of the arrival of servile oranges for a very short time so why not make a batch of homemade marmalade for the store cupboard. Shellfish is at its best with mussels. whelks, clams and oysters all making an appearance. Blood oranges are also extremely good and eats fantastically well as a compote with a creamy pannacotta and the first pull of the delicately flavoured rose pink, forced rhubarb is a joy to look forward to and will be featuring on the Artichoke menu very soon. After the indulgence of the Christmas season, January is the time to take things easy and put that curly kale to good use served very simply with some melted cheese, some roasted parsnip

and complimented with roasted pear makes for a delicious supper or light lunch. At the restaurant we use Isle of Avalon cheese but a Port Salut or raclette would work equally as well. is gloriously sticky soft cheese has a pungent flavour that has been likened to smoked bacon. Each wheel of Isle of Avalon begins as a Port Salut, which is then lovingly washed in wine at James Aldridge's dairy in Godstone until it matures into a lovely creamy gooeyness.

After the indulgence of the Christmas season, January is the time to take things easy and put that curly kale to good use.

Join us for a romantic Valentine’s evening Friday and Saturday 13th and 14th February 2015 Indulge your loved one with a Bespoke Six Course Gastronomic Tasting Menu with Charles Heidsieck Rose Champagne NV and Canapés upon arrival, selected wines to accompany, Coffee with Handmade Petits Fours and a Valentine gift for the lady. £155.00 PER PERSON.

ining with the Stars is a unique fine dining experience, where no fewer than five Michelin-starred chefs come together to each deliver one mouthwatering course, paired with carefully matched wines, for just 250 lucky guests. The event, taking place on Monday 9th February 2015 will be once again held in the heart of the City of London at the stunning Plaisterers’ Hall, and will be hosted by TV chef Valentine Warner, who will guide guests through the evening’s culinary journey. In 2014, the evening raised a staggering £167,414 for vital bowel cancer research. The Bobby Moore Fund work hard to secure an incredible line up of chefs to come together and create a fantastic evening, and among the chefs cooking this year will be Tom Kitchin, Richard Bainbridge, Michael Wignall and Tom Sellers. Special thanks go to their Premier Sponsor, Taleveras Group. All money raised at Dining with the Stars will go towards the Bobby Moore Fund’s pioneering bowel cancer research. One day we’ll beat bowel cancer. Help us make it sooner.

TICKET INFORMATION Tickets to the event are priced at £295 with VIP tickets available at £395. To book places or a full table, or for more information, please contact Amanda Myers on 020 3469 8881 or email amanda.myers@cancer.org.uk.

The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK raises vital funds for research into bowel cancer and increases public awareness of the disease. The Fund was set up by Stephanie Moore MBE in memory of her husband, footballer Bobby Moore, after his death from the disease in 1993, at just 51. ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS UNVEILS

‘THE SUHAIL COLLECTION’

T

he Suhail Collection is the first Collection to be offered on Phantom, Ghost and Wraith models, taking inspiration from Suhail, one of the brightest star constellations in the sky , and believed to have inspired the 10th Century Arabic mathematician, astronomer and physicist Ibn alHaitham. British-Iraqi physicist, Jim Al-Khalili, considers al-Haitham to be the “first true scientist” based on his pioneering work on the scientific method, including that light enters the eye rather than leaving it. His Book of Optics was translated into Latin in the 13th century and has influenced a number of key Western scientific thinkers including Roger Bacon, Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo Galilei and René Descartes. “Ibn al-Haitham was a notable pioneer whose

The interior continues the striking colour scheme by elegantly combining Crem é Light leather with Turchese accents, framed by a Navy Blue instrument panel top and carpets. Suhail star emblems are also worked into the marquetry on the Ash Burr wood fascia, whilst a Starlight Headliner in the Phantom and Wraith models allows the owner their own personal moment of stargazing. Finally the Bespoke clock, colour matched to the interior, depicts the Suhail Ursa Minor and Major constellation on the clock face. A YEAR OF AMAZING BESPOKE ROLLS-ROYCES 2014 saw several beautiful and compelling Collection cars such as Year of the Horse, Pinnacle Travel, Waterspeed, Metropolitan and Maharajah created by the

We felt the Suhail constellation was the perfect inspiration for a very special Bespoke collection to celebrate his influence on Eastern and Western science,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A host of elegantly executed touches have been added to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Phantom Coupé, Ghost and Wraith to bring the spirit of Suhail to life in this extraordinary collection. The exterior of these astronomy-inspired motor cars sparkle in a unique moonstone pearl colour evoking the colour of the stars at night, whilst a Suhail star emblem completes a Turchese Blue coachline inspired by the colour of the night sky when Suhail is visible. 8 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

Bespoke Design Studios at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Majestic Horse Ghost was designed to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Horse. Marrying the Chinese artistic tradition and appreciation of fine hand-craftsmanship, Majestic Horse offered unique interior and exterior features including stitched horses in the headrests and rear seat cushions as well as a painted horse logo on the side and one painted on the wooden dashboard. Pinnacle Travel Phantom, this extraordinary motor car served to showcase the imaginative heights of craftsmanship and design that emanates from Goodwood, seen through the prism of modern luxury travel, offering a luxuriant colour palette, opulent, sumptuous materials and complex, beautifully hand-crafted marquetry.

Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Collection was designed to celebrate Sir Malcolm Campbell’s new world water-speed record in 1937. Echoing the cutting-edge technology employed in the construction of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird K3 craft, only the finest contemporary materials were used. Brushed steel perfectly complemented an exclusively developed ‘Maggiore’ Blue colour scheme whilst hand-crafted Abachi wood inlays evoked the sense of a boat effortlessly gliding through water at pace, whilst exterior coachline and laser etchings inside the car brought Campbell’s ‘Bluebird’ motif back to life. Phantom Metropolitan Collection paid homage to the world’s great metropolises through the most complex application of marquetry ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce. When open, Phantom’s signature picnic tables presented occupants with an elevated view of the city, created through the expert application of 500 individual wood veneer pieces. Indeed, the process of hand-cutting, colouring, shaping and applying is so complex these unique objects d’art take an expert wood craftsperson several days to complete. The cityscape theme extended to a specially developed Aetherius Grey leather colour created to echo the colour palette of the modern city whilst 6,800 two-tone stitches to the central rear seat flutes depicted an abstract image of a skyscraper. For the first time in the marque’s history, a rotating bezel expressing 24 of the great cities of the world and their time zones adorned the central console of a Rolls-Royce motor car. Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupé was unveiled in November. Inspired by the Golden Age of the Raja, this beautiful model was conceptualised and hand¬crafted in honour of India’s affinity with the super¬luxury marque.100 years ago, India’s Princes and Maharajas collectively engaged in what is described as one of the world’s longest relationships with one automobile manufacturer. Over a period of five decades, the Maharajas purchased over 840 unique Rolls¬Royce motor cars pushing the maker of the ‘Best Car in the World’ to unprecedented levels of design, engineering and luxury. Rolls¬Royce Motor Cars is recreating that golden age of India’s motoring heritage though a collection of Bespoke vehicles inspired by the Maharajas’ cars. These limited Collections serve to inspire customers, with record levels of Bespoke demand. Nearly every Phantom across the globe, 90% of Wraith and 80% of Ghost family motor cars were commissioned by customers with some element of Bespoke design. Bespoke is Rolls-Royce.
