summer fun

Words by Michelle Benato

ummer is here, the sun is shining and it's a perfect day for a family outing. ere are parks and woodlands to be explored, walks to be had and ducks to be fed, but where do you go if you're in the mood for something just a little more adventurous? e answer is not too far away, in Taplow to be precise, at a stunning lakeside location hidden away just off the A4. Wakeplus is a friendly, family-run activity centre where beginners can try their hand at a range of sports from wakeboarding and water-skiing to stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking and lots more besides. Owner Mike and his team are on hand to offer expert tuition and guidance to ensure that you get the most out of your visit and to set you on the road to what might just become a fun new hobby. If it all sounds too demanding there is a more sedate, if equally exhilarating, option which is to be pulled behind the boat on one of Wakeplus' fun inflatable toys. ere are ringos, bananas and even armchairs, where the only skill required is a tight grip and a sense of fun. For those less than hardy souls who shiver at the thought of exposing themselves to the chilly British water, rest assured, the lake is shallow and heats quickly in good weather, with temperatures of 20 degrees plus the norm, and if it hasn't warmed up quite enough for

your tastes, there is a large selection of wetsuits available to keep you warm. When you've finished on the water head to the sun terrace for a burger and a drink and enjoy the stunning lake view. Summer Camp DayS For more adventurous children who are keen to try a variety of the activities on offer, Wakeplus' summer camp days are the answer - drop them at 9am and they can enjoy a full day of fun on the water and make some new friends at the same time. Camp days run throughout the summer, subject to availability and advanced booking is necessary. 15% Off yOur firSt riDe Wakeplus is offering a 15% discount on water sports to readers visiting the lake for the first time, Simply quote LIFE15 when booking. LEADING ARTISTS JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE TWO LOCAL CHARITIES

L

eading artists are joining forces in June to support two local charities, Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and a community facilities project at Holy Trinity Church, Prestwood. e special “Artfest”, showing the work of invited members of national art societies and gallery artists from Britain and abroad, will take place between 13th and 27th June at e Hawker Gallery, off School Lane in Old Amersham (Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm). e exhibition will feature paintings, sculpture and ceramics in a wide variety of styles and media. Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, founded thirty years ago, takes its name from its very first patient. e charity provides care and support for both patients diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses and their families. It serves about 3000 patients a year on a 24/7 basis and the general public contribute about 85% of its £6.5 million annual running costs. David Wickham, representing the Holy Trinity project, said, “Our vision is that the Church and the building will be a significant resource within the wider community. But we desperately need to update many of our facilities so that we can be a real focal point for the benefit of the community as a whole.” e Hawker Gallery “Artfest” is a great opportunity to participate in fundraising for these two worthy local causes. With free entry, visitors will be able to enjoy the very high standard of work offered for sale. Both the artists and the gallery will be making a significant contribution to the fund

by donating a proportion of sales made during the event. ere are lots of other opportunities for visitors to enjoy this attractive festival of art. Brian Bennett, the renowned painter of the Chilterns, will demonstrate his technique of oil painting with a knife. John Benjamin, jewellery expert with the Antiques Roadshow, and Bill Giles, one of our favourite weathermen, will talk entertainingly about their specialisms and experiences. A limited number of tickets are available for these events. Buy a raffle ticket for a portrait by the very popular figure painter, Gordon King, to be painted in the gallery on the last day of the exhibition. Terrific prizes are also available in a general raffle and in an auction of very inviting lots. ■

team leander I

t’s the most successful sports club in the world, with more Olympic medals to its credit than any other in the world. It’s a high performance centre of excellence, responsible for helping to put Great Britain at the top of the rowing medal table. It has nurtured some of the country’s most decorated Olympic rowing legends including Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent. But now Leander Club, from its riverside base in Henley, is carving a niche as the development ground for new potential in rowing. Its talent identification programme is helping to find the Olympians of tomorrow by recruiting athletes with potential and nurturing them to stardom. ey include Tom Mortimer, 17, recruited from a local non-rowing school, but already making his mark, with medals at the National Schools Regatta and British Championships after just two seasons in the sport. “I was picked out as one of the tallest in my year, and my PE teacher asked if I wanted to get involved” he explained. “I was doing a bit of rugby but it’ wasn’t my thing – the training in beautiful surroundings sounded good!” he added. After a month improving his strength and fitness with swimming, running, cross-training, and gym circuits, his place at Leander was confirmed.

2 0 june 2015

“I enjoy the sense of team here at Leander- we’re all on the same side, energising one another. I’m getting on really well and I’ve made a lot of new friends here” he said. “You feel like you’re in a high performance club – the people behind me are supporting me. I want to do well and I want to achieve.” One athlete who has gone right to the top is Olympic champion, Alex Gregory, the current club captain, who is keen to emphasise the nurturing environment at Leander. “We’re all Leander athletes together, no matter what we’ve done. I look at the younger guys and remember how I felt at that age – I want to help provide an atmosphere where they can achieve their best, and hopefully move on to the world stage in the future” he said. As well as their sporting ambitions, young athletes cannot neglect the academic side of their life. at is why Leander has forged a relationship with Henley College, which provides A-Level and vocational diploma courses, as well as apprenticeships and other opportunities. ese include the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme, which gives Tom and seven other Leander juniors the opportunity to gain further qualifications while continuing to develop as an athlete.

The Leander clubhouse

The athletes at Leander are divided into two groups. Half are already members of the GB rowing team and train down the road at the national training centre in Caversham. e other half make up the club’s Development Academy, aiming to become the stars of the future. But to run a programme at that level requires more than £400,000 a year. “It’s a very high level of investment, to provide the best coaching, boats and support, to allow the athletes to give of their very best” said chief coach Mark Banks. Membership subscriptions forms a key part of that investment, as does the revenue generated by the clubhouse itself – one of the finest venues in the ames Valley. Nevertheless there is a shortfall, which is where corporate organisations provide crucial support to allow the Academy to function with the maximum possible benefit. One of the sponsors of the Development Academy is Parmigiani, the watchmakers founded in Fleurier, Switzerland. “ere are many cross-overs between corporate business and high performance sport – commitment and discipline, leading to success, plus of course the technical excellence which our athletes put into their sport, and which has direct relevance to an organisation like Parmigiani” said Paul Budd, the Leander General Manager.

Another corporate sponsor at Leander is the Spire Dunedin Hospital in Reading, which provides specialist medical support, investigations and physiotherapy, when required, for the club’s athletes. As a key player in rowing, often described as the ultimate team sport, Leander offers team-building programmes on a regular basis to outside organisations. ese rowing experience days enable participants to experience the sport for themselves and improve their performance skills. It’s an inspiring and rewarding day at the spiritual home of world rowing, as visitors readily attest. “Every aspect of food, drink and hospitality service, and the whole on-and-off-the–water experience at Leander, was outstanding” said Stuart Branch, Group HR Director at e Weetabix Food Company. “We will seek to repeat our future associations and get some non-rowers in a boat to understand what teamwork really means!” said another visitor. ■

no drama!

Performing arts classes - helping every child find the right direction, in performance and in life!

I

f you thought drama classes were just full of kids who wanted to be the next Harry Potter, think again. Many parents and young people have realised that the real benefit is the increased confidence and improved communication skills that such sessions offer and with a lot of schools offering less drama within the main curriculum, many are flocking to weekend drama schools like e Pauline Quirke Academy to find what they are looking for. Performing arts education has a wonderful effect on young people and the success stories are impressive. Children who were once incredibly shy have not only put their hands up in class for the first time, but have then gone on to achieve previously unthinkable feats, such as singing in front of an audience or presenting to a room of their peers. Parents are impressed not just by the huge change in their child's confidence but by the speed at which that change can occur, which in some cases can be as a little as a few weeks. And while young children learn essential life skills like listening and responding effectively, canny teenagers with an eye on their future know that the ability to engage any audience, especially at a University or job interview, can give you the edge in a very competitive world. So, what's the secret? What's important is how it's taught. Going to a drama class and being forced to perform in front of a group of strangers would be terrifying for anyone, let alone a shy and nervous child. Our team adapts a gentler approach, using drama exercises that are non-threatening to slowly introduce the idea of speaking by yourself. We build the kids up gradually and we gain their trust because they know we're not going to

make them do anything they don't feel comfortable with. We make it high energy and we make it fun, but at the same time we're dropping in essential skills like speaking clearly and charismatically and learning how to work as a team. We have kids who want to be teachers and lawyers. We have kids that want to be entrepreneurs. We've got a couple who even want to be astronauts! If we can help of all them achieve their dreams, as well as the ones who want to be professional actors one day, then it's job done. Children will also get a massive self-esteem boost from many of the actual performance opportunities on offer too. Taking a bow as a theatre full of people applaud you grows confidence like nothing else and at academies like PQA, children also get to see themselves on the big screen of the local cinema in one of their short film projects. With the opportunity to make like-minded new friends, enjoy new experiences and explore everything from clowning and stage combat to street dance, musicals and film-making, it's easy to see why performing arts classes are so popular now in the UK and how the benefits to confidence and communication really do help every child find the right direction. ■ PQA Penn runs on Saturdays, 09:45-13:00 and 13:45-17.00

a

weekend of fantastic Opera at the Stubbings Estate. Opera Brava Britains largest and most successful touring Opera company will be performing both Tosca on Friday 24th of July and Rigoletto on the 25th of July. is year will be a sell-out so bring a picnic and enjoy a wonderful weekend of Opera. Now in its 27th year Opera Brava has assembled a fabulous cast of young, exciting and thrilling singers mixed with some international artists who perform in major opera houses including English National Opera and e Royal Opera House. eir operas are fully staged, sung in English and accompanied by a piano and chamber ensemble. Tosca has to be one of Puccini’s greatest scores, it is full of passion, tragedy, beauty and pathos. is production only serves to enhance the wonderful music in this piece. e Role of Tosca will be performed by Demelza Stafford a rising star in the world of Opera. Cavaradossi, Cameron Rolls has sung the role many times both in England and in German Opera Houses. Scarpia, a role that was made famous by Titto Gobbi when he played opposite Maria Callas, is played by Francis Church who has sung with all the National Opera Companies. e production is directed by Tony Baker, originally an International designer who has designed for Covent Garden, e Met and several European Opera Houses. Jeremy Silver an International Conductor having just completed a season with English Touring Opera returns for an eighth season with Opera Brava.

2 6 june 2015

If you have seen the film “Quartet” you will not want to miss this live performance of Rigoletto. One of opera's most vivid and compelling characters, a vengeful Court Jester, desperately tries to protect his daughter from disaster in this heart-wrenching tragedy.e role of Rigoletto is the first fully developed character found in Verdi's operas; his changes of mood and emotion seem naturally wedded to the dramatic situation, and his music has an inevitable quality, seemingly driving the story to its tragic conclusion. International Baritone Oliver Gibbs a regular performer at Covent Garden is thrilled to be touring with Opera Brava in this magnificent production. e opening of the final act contains two of the most famous pieces in all opera: the Duke's "La donna e mobile" (which needs no introduction), and the famous quartet, "Bella figlia dell'amore," in which each character is expressing a different emotion Why not make your summer complete and enjoy an evening of Opera in the beautiful surroundings of Stubbings Estate, bring picnics, champagne, friends and make the most of this first class live entertainment. ■

P

imms, paddles and posh nosh will be in abundance this year at Henley Royal Regatta when party people and racing enthusiasts alike, take to the banks of the River ames for one of England’s most prestigious summer sporting and social events, from Wednesday 1st to Sunday 5th July. For those that want to retreat from the crowded affairs of the tow paths, avoid queuing for bottles of champagne and enjoy the shaded retreat of some of the finest hospitality along the course, Temple Island Enclosure during Henley Royal Regatta still remains one of the most favoured places to entertain on the Regatta course, close to the start of the racing. is prestigious enclosure located on the Berkshire side of the river (the rowing side) first opened it’s doors over 30 years ago with a range of riverside restaurants and private hospitality chalets and is now also home to one of London’s most prolific nightclubs, Chinawhite on Friday evening and Saturday. Restyled in 2014, Temple Island Enclosure featured newly designed hospitality restaurants of clean crisp summer styling, enlarged riverside gardens, with outdoor bars and views of the racing, waitress service and relaxing lounge areas combining perfectly with the chilled vibe of music for lazy days by the river. Choose to dine in the restaurant where private tables are guaranteed for a minimum of two guests, or reserve a private chalet on one or more days of the regatta. On arrival, guests are treated to Champagne reception with canapés served from the al fresco bars, followed by a spectacular summer lunch accompanied by a choice of chilled wines and of course, not to be missed on any day during the Regatta, complimentary bubbles, magnums of rosé wine and summer cocktails.

Afternoon tea will be an eclectic affair of strawberries, meringues, and if all this isn’t enough, then guests have the opportunity to participate on a river cruise along the Regatta course, a chance to take in the ambiance and excitement of the racing whilst enjoy. ichelle Benato writes… If your kids are mad about sport then there is one festival you won't want to miss this year, and the good news is that it's happening just down the road on the stunning Wormsley Estate in Stokenchurch. Vitality SportFest is a festival with a difference, bringing sports-loving families together with world-class sporting legends for a weekend of coaching, competitions, entertainment, camping and great food from Jamie Oliver's Fabulous Feasts. is is a unique chance for children aged 5 to 16 to develop skills, make new friends and be inspired by legends of their chosen sport. Some of the stars lining to inspire this year's youngsters include Martin Johnson, Will Greenwood and Austin Healey (rugby), Daley ompson and Louise Hazel (athletics), Greg Rusedski (tennis), Beth Tweddle (gymnastics), John Barnes (football), Matthew Hoggard and Simon Jones (cricket), Matthew Pinsent (rowing), Sarah omas and Simon Faulkner (hockey), Johnny Nelson (boxing) and representatives from England Netball (players to be confirmed). Vitality SportFest also gives parents and children lots of other opportunities to have fun, with stunning walking trails through the beautiful Wormsley Estate, personal training and health sessions, competitions and much more. If you have little ones who aren't quite old enough to join in with the coaching, there are plenty of other activities to keep them happy

as Vitality SportFest is designed with the whole family in mind. ere will be many different children's entertainers running fun-filled activities throughout the weekend and a crèche with fully qualified childminding is available. For those mums and dads who love their sport, there will be the chance to take part in the ultimate cricket match - a 20/20 game against the sporting legends! Saturday evening will see live entertainment on stage, and, who knows, may even even include a repeat of the legendary footballer John Barnes' rap that delighted Festival goers last year. When it comes to the camping, you can bring your own tent or treat the family to one of the wonderful 'glamping' options, including a 16 foot yurt complete with double bed and an electric chandelier. However you choose to experience Vitality SportFest, one thing's for sure, you'll want to bring your camera! Vitality SportFest are offering a special discount of 15% to all our readers. illions of teenagers use Facebook without knowing they are using the internet, studies revealed recently. It's strange for those of us who grew up watching, knowing that one requires the other. Without the internet, there would be no Facebook. Technology is part of our daily lives everywhere. Computers are no longer just on your desktop or in your pocket. ey are in your fridge and on your walls. With a world where everything is technology, how do we teach that? My nieces can use technology better than I ever could at their age. Give a six year-old a smartphone, and they can use it far better than someone ten times older. When I was growing up, footballers, popstars and astronauts were idols. Now, when I talk to children, tech entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg join that list. Yet, while technology is everywhere, how many know how things really work? Computational thinking is a cornerstone of computer science. In its simplest form, it is building big concepts from small building blocks. It is learning to fix problems in logical orders. A parent came up with an analogy recently. Imagine a lamp doesn't switch on. How do you fix it? You switch socket, and then bulb. You check the fuse, and so on. You break down the problem into identifiable, testable chunks.

3 2 june 2015

at's computational thinking. "Computational thinking is useful to anybody who has to plan anything," said professor John Naughton. "It's a way of doing things intelligently [...] the kind of stuff we have to tackle even when we're planning to replace our kitchens." For so long IT has been taught in isolation. You go to the computer room and learn. We need to think more widely. As Naughton says, "if you understand the nature of computer programming, then you have grasped one of the most fundamental ideas you need to be a citizen in the next 50 years." Technology permeates everything around us, and we use it very well. But we have an opportunity to understand it at a greater scale. Code is important. But understanding the processes behind it is more so. at’s why at Newland College, we want these concepts to transcend everything we do. It’s not something to leave at the IT room door. We want to use technology to interact with the world around us. And, when we have learnt that, the potential is limitless. ■

The Wormsley esTaTe A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the Chilterns

Words by Michelle Benato

urn off the M40 at junction 5 and you'll find yourself less than a minute from one of the county's most stunning private estates. If you've never heard of Wormsley then you're not alone, this hidden gem is a secret that local lovers of cricket and the arts have been keeping to themselves. e estate has existed since the 11th century, but it was American Billionaire Sir Paul Getty who, after purchasing it in 1984, carried out an extensive restoration project to make it the sensational venue that it is today. Under his stewardship Wormsley thrived and became the centre of the initiative to re-establish red kites to their indigenous habitat in the Chilterns. e Estate was farmed organically, a large deer park established and a major programme of woodland re-planting undertaken. e house at Wormsley was largely rebuilt and a library added to house Sir Paul Getty's growing collection of books and historic manuscripts. e library now boasts one of the country's finest collections, including Anne Boleyn's psalter, a Shakespeare first folio, the first edition of Caxton's printing of e Canterbury Tales and a 7th century fragment believed to be the earliest English manuscript. Wander further into the estate and you'll discover the beautiful walled garden, with a variety of features including historic wells, a croquet lawn, a stunning pergola, a rose garden and a fantastic outdoor theatre.

3 8 june 2015

Oh, and did I mention the 600 seat opera pavilion, home to Garsington Opera? Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Wormsley Estate, however, is the cricket ground, a surprising feature on an American owned estate, but a labour of love for Sir Paul who was introduced to the game by his good friend Mick Jagger. e Ground plays host to many events, both public and private, throughout the summer and there are always many familiar faces from the world of cricket, including Wormsley's own ambassador, 2005 Ashes hero Matthew Hoggard MBE. is year's line up sees some really special events for cricket lovers including Sir Ian 'Beefy' Botham's 60th birthday picnic in July, featuring a star-studded match followed by a live performance by Eric Clapton in the opera pavilion. In September the ground will play host to a 2005 Ashes reunion event featuring many of the winning team and followed by a live performance of Freddie Flintoff's 'Second Innings' show. To be a member of the Wormsley Club is to be a part of something very special, but let's keep it to ourselves... ■

Birth of new rules for working parents

t

hanks to new rules, mothers can now share up to 50 weeks of their maternity or adoption leave with their partner. is means both parents can be off work at the same time however, as employment lawyer Hannah King explains, this can have significant implications for employers and employees alike. “e new rules are complex and, providing the eligibility criteria have been met, there is very little an employer can do in terms of not allowing leave," says Hannah. "is requires a huge change in the way companies approach time off, especially where both parents are employed in the same business." It is important employees understand the strict timeframes if they want to take up Shared Parental Leave (SPL). e application process is quite complicated - prospective new parents must submit notice to their employer at least eight weeks before the first date of the proposed SPL period, accompanied by additional information. Although at this point the dates are non-binding, prospective new parents must give an indication of the dates they are likely to be away to enable employers to start thinking about how to cover for their absence. ere can only be a maximum of three separate Period of Leave requests to cover the SPL time, which means if an employee tries to amend a previously agreed Period of Leave, then this will also count as one request.

4 2 june 2015

Advice for future pArents • Decide which of you wants to take leave and when • Remember you can make three separate requests for leave during SPL periods • Don’t miss the deadlines, or your employer can refuse your request • Have open and frank discussions with your employer early. Explain your intentions so you can resolve any potential issues • Ask to see your employer’s SPL policy; this will set out the necessary timeframes and notification requirements Advice for employers • Ensure you have an SPL policy in place • Recognise that the law applies no matter how big or small your team • You can ask an employee if he or she would be prepared to return to work for up to 20 days, for example to complete a particular project, without compromising the SPL agreement • If you find out SPL is being abused or not used for its main purpose you can take disciplinary action. ■

One of the high points of this special evening was Jason’s duck main course, which was a whole roasted duck to share for two, served with a

salad of duck leg infused with Moroccan spices and served with a Crimson Pinot Noir, from New Zealand, superbly paired by Artichoke’s Restaurant Manager Matteo Scaccabarozzi in collaboration, with Social Company’s Executive Sommelier Laure Patry. Next followed the first of the desserts, a white chocolate mousse with goose berries poached in elderflower stock and lemon curd, which gave a zesty twist to the dish, created by Laurie. e exclusive Tasting was rounded off with a uniquely designed gariguettes strawberry “Eton Mess”, packed with exploding flavours, by Jason and perfected with a matching dessert wine Baron de Rothschild Reserve Sauternes 2011 from Waddesdon Wines. roughout the six courses, both, Jason and Laurie spent time at the tables chatting with the guests and expanding on the dishes. Finally, the Charity Event ended with a dynamic live auction of kindly donated unique gourmet ‘lots’ by e Artichoke and the Social Company, raising nearly £4000 for the charity. Hertfordshire’s leading destination for buying art

Investing in Art Celebrating a superb exhibition by Hertfordshire’s leading art destination Gallery Rouge of stunning works from supremely talented artists, both past and future.

G

allery Rouge celebrated their fifth annual exhibition of works from esteemed 20th Century Master artists in style. Clients have become accustomed to the care and attention the gallery places in sourcing rare and seldom seen works, and this year was no exception! Such is the anticipation of this event, the attendance was understandably overwhelming.

This year’s event though marked a slight departure from previous years. With the recent announcement of the record sale of Picasso’s ‘Les femmes D’Alger’ for $179m USD, attention was concentrated around ‘who could be the potential master of the future’? Crystal ball gazing is an elusive pursuit, but certain principles remain firm, which led to the shortlisting of artists by Gallery Rouge for their exhibition;

Execution

Paramount to any painting is the deft and considered application of the artist. In the works of both JM Reyes and Marc Esteve one is in awe of the delicate yet precise application of their strokes. By comparison, the loose yet intelligent attention of Hessam Abrishami captures energy and flow. Works which captivate the mind will sustain longevity, developing the integrity of the artist for years to come.

Scarcity

It is a common stated fact that objects which are rare command greater value. But it’s important to note that scarcity without quality is meaningless. Whilst Picasso was considered a prolific painter, creating an estimated 50,000 pieces in his 70 year painting lifetime, respect for his work is universal Kal Gajoum – ‘St Paul’s Cathedral’ £32,000

and exceptional. When looking towards modern day painters consider their output careful. Those who focus on deliberate and intentional works around a theme within a narrowband structure will stand you in good stead. For example, consider the works of Kal Gajoum – this highly talented Canada based artist only creates a handful of original works for exhibitions, of which he may only hold three a year around the world.

Pedigree

Securing the accolades of one’s peers or contemporaries is very hard to achieve. Impartial recognition within the art world is often provided by the awarding of commissions or the distinction of significant events. Look for noteworthy positions e.g. Presidents of credible institutions like the Society of Oil Painters.

Principles of Investment

‘Only buy what you love’ – It is important to accept that investing is a long term strategy, fraught with

market ups and downs. Whilst a work is in your possession it’s critical that you enjoy the piece whilst in your custodianship. Don’t buy a painting because a salesperson tells you it will be worth more in the future; use your intellect and judgement to see past the sales patter. Only work with a reputable gallery which acts not as a primary gallery (sells you work) but as a dealer (buys and sells works). This will ensure that when the time is right to sell, the gallery has a vested interest in working with you to realise any gains.

or nearly a decade Marlow and Maidenhead families have been enjoying outdoor activities at Longridge on the ames at Bisham. Learning to kayak, row and sail as well as enjoying family camping weekend and holding very active and exciting birthday parties. e charity that own Longridge have raised over £3m to improve the facilities and add in new activities to allow 90,000 young people to visit every year, with their families, schools and youth groups. Longridge was in the news last year when it was devastated by the floods and it looked for a time as thought the charity would not survive. Fortunately the public really stepped up, with companies donating goods and services and local people turning up with spades and brooms to clear the centre up. e result is that Longridge has never looked so good. So make sure you get down there and enjoy all they can offer this summer. e next stage of Longridge’s development is even more exciting, as the Longridge Charity has formed a new charity the Adventure Learning Foundation to run other activity centres on a not-for-profit basis for the benefit of young people of all ages and abilities. So now, those in Tring, Wendover and Aylesbury can enjoy outdoor adventurous activities at Green Park in Aston Clinton and

at Shortenills in Chalfont St Giles wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy activities that help young people understand our natural environment even better. Later this year the charity will also operate the Athletics Track that Wycombe District Council are building in Little Marlow, under the banner ALFletics – this complex will be open in July to clubs and individuals. If you and your family have ever wanted to try a new sport or develop skills in an existing one then take a look at the ALF Villages website and see what takes your fancy. If you are not sure what activity is right for you look out for their, Give It A Try Days, which will let you try out the activities for as little as £1. If you are more a spectator than a participator, then book in your family and you can enjoy a leisurely Cappuccino from the Café and enjoy the beautiful settings and happy faces. ■

armigiani Fleurier presents the "skeleton" edition of the Tonda 1950, which reveals the incredibly complex mechanism and features of this extra-thin model. Each bridge and main plate of the PF705 calibre movement has been exquisitely openworked and decorated. No fewer than 127 internal angles adorn the main plate and bridges, requiring 40 hours of decorative work per piece. Revealed in all its refined glory, the skeleton movement of the Tonda 1950 complements the purity of the extra-thin model, displaying its allegiance to a watchmaking tradition where simple lines combined with a high quality finish are used to create timeless beauty. e platinum micro-rotor is now visible on the surface of the watch, rather than solely on the back of the movement. As a result, this new face has been decorated with a pattern formed of Parmigiani Fleurier's iconic lugs, part of the brand's DNA. Hinting at the spiral shape of the rotor, the motif emphasises the distinctive feeling of movement, which can be observed with each movement of the wrist. Contrary to all expectations, the Tonda 1950 Squelette does feature a dial, but it is made from sapphire, making it perfectly invisible. Only its rim is metallised, thus elegantly serving to hide the points of attachment between the movement and the case. It also bears the Parmigiani Fleurier logo, which takes the form of a transfer at the top of this rim, rather than the usual monogram,

version of the model to showcase the full technical prowess of the watch, revealing the movement in minute detail. With typically feminine subtlety, the design of the second version reveals as it hides, lending a softness to the piece by blurring the harsh angles of its movement. is frosted veil also echoes the grained white finish which made the original Tonda 1950 such an overwhelming success. e men's version of the Tonda 1950 Squelette is available in white gold or rose gold with a black or tan Hermès strap, with the ladies' version available in a choice of stone-set white gold or rose gold with a red or "ficelle" Hermès strap. Each version of this timepiece is a testament to the uncompromising pursuit of beauty and exceptional attention to detail. ese are the values with which Parmigiani Fleurier imbues each of its creations.

Finally, the dial features a very interesting function which distinguishes the men's version of the Tonda 1950 Squelette from the ladies' model. The Traveller e story for the autumn/winter 2015 collection takes us on a journey through the beautiful landscapes of Peru, where we visit the tribes and villages of the Peruvian countryside and fall in love with the diverse and beautiful colours and prints. e Peruvian’s relaxed approach to colours and prints is very refreshing and has inspired us to use colours such as Orange, Lemon, Indigo, Nectar and Pink. Peruvian designs are often inspired by things in nature like the sun, mountains, flowers, birds and rivers. ey also use attractive geometric arrangements and it is these unique graphic patterns that have inspired us to find the perfect Ikat print for this season. We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is the evolving of oneself – Love is in the detail.

Vaccinating against HPV Gardasil is a vaccine designed to protect against wart virus infection (Human PapillomaVirus or HPV). HPV infection is associated with a wide range of cancers, notably cervical and oropharyngeal cancers. A recent British Medical Journal (BMJ) suggested that recent projections are that by 2020, HPV related oropharyngeal cancer will become the most common HPV related cancer in the US, surpassing cervical cancer. It is widely accepted that the vaccine is indicated for women aged 9-26, but most people are unaware that the vaccine can be given to males of the same age. The BMJ article also stated that 800 boys would need to be vaccinated to prevent one cancer. Dr Peter Petrie explains: What is Gardasil? Gardasil is the HPV vaccine that helps protect against several types of HPV and HPV-related diseases. Current research suggests good levels of immunity for at least 7 years. What is hPV? ere are over 100 different strains of HPV. Around 40 types affect the genital area, making it the most common viral sexually transmitted infection. Whilst the majority of HPV strains simply lead to warts and verrucae, certain strains are associated with high risk of promoting cancers in the affected tissues, often at sites that are difficult to monitor. Gardasil for Girls In girls and young women Gardasil helps protect against two types of HPV that are strongly associated with 75% of cases of cervical cancer, and two types that cause about 90% of all cases of genital warts. In addition it helps protect women against approximately 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulval cancers. Gardasil for boys Many people are unaware of the benefits of Gardasil for boys and young men. In males aged 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against approximately 90% of genital wart cases. In addition it protects against anal cancer and precancerous anal lesions. Importantly, a young man

6 0 june 2015

protected by Gardasil will not pass the HPV virus onto any sexual partners. does Gardasil treat hPV? No, it is a preventative vaccine. Women should continue routine cancer screening, such as the cervical smear, and men need to report issues with lesions in the boxer short area, or persistent sore throats. hoW is the Vaccine GiVen? Gardasil is a course of two or three vaccinations depending on the age of the patient when they start the course. What are the side effects? Side effects are uncommon, but can include pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, a headache, fever or nausea. Symptoms should only persist for a short time, and are usually trivial. ■ For more information about the Gardasil vaccination visit our website www.doctornow.org or to book an appointment please call your local DOCTORnow surgery: Beaconsfield 01494 410888 or Tring 01442 502999

About NAtioNAl Smile moNth

6 2 june 2015

t’s was that time of the year again and it was National Smile Month which runs from May 18th to June 18th 2015. So lot of people asked me what it was about so thought would write a few words about it. In a nutshell, National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign e aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the British Dental Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people throughout the UK. A healthy smile can be a great asset. Not only can it benefit us socially and help us in other things such as our careers and relationships, but it also has many more practical benefits. Our teeth have such an important role to play in our lives. ey help us chew and digest food, they help us to talk and speak clearly and they also give our face its shape. Because of this, it makes sense to give our oral health the best care possible. National Smile Month is our chance to take a look at our oral health, learn more about why a healthy smile is so important and share tips on how to improve and maintain it. e three key messages for National Smile Month are the ‘bread and butter’ principles for developing great oral health: • Brush our teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down on how often we have sugary foods and drinks. • Visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

costly, yet many of us still choose to ignore the most basic day-to-day hygiene routines. A staggering number of us brush for less than two minutes, our diet as a nation has become over-reliant on added sugars while millions of us haven’t seen a dentist in the last two years. e consequences of these over a long period of time, can lead to unnecessary, invasive and expensive treatment. ere are direct oral health problems that can arise such as gum disease and tooth decay while the repercussions of poor oral health go further than our mouth. An increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, dementia, complications during pregnancy and male sexual health problems are just a few of the likely outcomes of not looking after our teeth. So there we have it. e benefits of developing and maintaining a healthy mouth are clear for all of us to see, as are the dangers of an unhealthy mouth. Following the basic rules and adopting a sensible daily routine should be high on all our agendas. By using National Smile Month as an opportunity to prioritise our oral health, we will soon see what a remarkably positive difference it makes to many aspects of our lives.

ese messages provide a good starting point for us but there’s so much more we can learn. Let’s be honest, maintaining a general level of good oral health is a fairly simple task. It’s not time consuming or

BRING THE INDOORS OUT We may not all been green fingered but we all want an outside space to relax and entertain our friends in. Lauren Gilberthorpe, high-end interior designer and industry consultant, talks you through the latest design trend for creating a garden sanctuary by bringing indoor comforts outside.

T

he time has come to move outside, dust off the BBQ, feel the sun on your skin and enjoy a delicious G&T in the garden. Although only relatively short, we really do try to make the most of the summer in Britain. Long summer evenings spent dining al fresco, children squealing with delight as an impromptu water fight breaks out, summer fetes and regattas, and of course, Pimms O’Clock. Forget about bringing the outside in, to make the most of your outside space the key is to treat it as another room in your house and bring the inside… out! Soften your terrace with comfortable seating, floor cushions, sparkling candles and perhaps even a rug for additional comfort. Dress the table with a collection of interesting tableware, tea lights and flowers to add colour and interest. Over the years clients have often asked for assistance in tying together their interior and exterior design to create continuity throughout the property. Here are some of my top tips:

6 6 june 2015

SHELTER Ah, yes! e great British Summer; nothing spoils the moment than a sudden unexpected downpour that results in a mad dash back inside. Incorporating shelter into your design will create a space that will leave you fuss-free and smiling whatever the weather. A pergola or sun sail will protect you from the sun as well as the heat on beautiful sunny days and will provide enough coverage should you get a few spots of rain. LIGHTING Inside you have different layers and types of light to suit different times of the day. Why not do the same for the outside? From twinkling fairy lights for ambience to hurricane lamps with candles providing a guiding light in the darkness, nothing transforms a space quite like lighting. For extra luxury, point spotlights at features such as sculptures and garden seats to bring a space to life.

KEEP IT INFORMAL e addition of interesting finds and vintage objects will create an eclectic and relaxed style. Furnish your terrace as you would your lounge – add a variety of different shaped objects to your table; display flowers, string up bunting and scatter furniture with throws and cushions. FURNITURE Garden furniture has come a long way since the days of plastic tables and chairs. Whatever your style, there is exterior furniture to complement it. From chunky teak dining tables to contemporary high gloss pieces, there are plenty of items on the market to appeal to a variety of discerning tastes. FLOOR CUSHIONS Large floor cushions are a flexible addition to any home and perfect for children and teenagers. ey can be moved easily and create a relaxed, informal feel. CONTINUEYOUR SCHEME Just as the colour palette indoors should work from room to room, so too should your additional ‘room’ outdoors. Take colours from your interior and pull them through into the garden in planting, walls, accessories and furniture to create an effortless flow throughout the house and garden. MAXIMISEYOUR SPACE Small spaces require thoughtful planning and some clever ideas, both inside and out. Classic techniques such as carefully placed mirrors can open up and lighten a space. If positioned carefully, you can also reflect natural light back into your home. Don’t be afraid of colour in small outside spaces. I would always

advise against painting a small dark room in bright white as it then becomes small and clinical. Your space may be small but it can still be visually stimulating! FIREPLACES If budget allows, an exterior fireplace can be the most wonderful focal point - great for keeping warm and cooking. Arrange your furniture as you would in your living room, placing chairs around the fireplace with side tables and perches for drinks. Keep throws handy for guests should the evening get a little bit chilly. We are in England after all! Based in Rickmansworth and working throughout the Chilterns and West London, I design and manage a wide variety of small and large-scale interior design projects. From individual houses, seaside retreats and showhomes through to luxury spa hotels and country estates, my wide ranging expertise in the industry allows me to offer a range of tailored design packages. From one-day home consultancy sessions and on-line ‘e-designs’ to full-scale luxury interior design, get in touch for an informal chat to design a space and package that is personal to you. ■

LOW MAINTENANCE GARDENS BY DESIGN Caroline May Garden Design creates beautiful gardens that are easy to manage.

W

e all lead such busy lives these days that, to many, taking care of a garden seems like just another job on the list. And yet, the irony is, that a manageable garden can be the perfect antidote to our hectic lifestyles! Just grabbing a coffee outside on a sunny bench, or pottering around with a watering can after work can instantly change the pace, or simply throwing open those bi-fold doors to bring the outside in. Caroline May keeps low maintenance at the forefront of her thinking with every design. e key to success is choosing the right plants for the right place and with many years of horticultural experience she puts together a palette that not only gives good Winter structure, but weaves seasonal colour through, for year round interest and drama. And if we are serious about low maintenance, large expanses of manicured lawns aren’t the answer. Caroline always offer alternative solutions, eradicating lawns altogether in smaller gardens. ROW London, the contemporary garden fair, will return to Hampstead Heath this month for the second year, presenting over 100 exhibitors with a must-have selection of plants, pots, outdoor furniture and everything else needed to create a beautiful garden or outdoor space. WHAT’S GROWING ON? Around 100 carefully selected exhibitors will showcase the very best of what’s available in the world of gardens and gardening, offering an unrivalled selection of contemporary and classic garden furniture, rare and hard-to-find plants from some of the country’s finest nurseries, and a tempting edit of covetable pots, planters, accessories and tools. All will be beautifully staged in an air-conditioned marquee stunningly styled by leading garden designer Stephen Woodhams. Acclaimed designer Cleve West will be headlining the exciting talks programme, while free workshops and activities for adults and children alike will be on offer throughout the fair. CONTEMPORARY STYLE GROW London is the place to discover everything that’s hot in gardening in 2015. Find colourful, cuttingedge furniture from Barbed and all the latest accessories and planters from the likes of Judy Green’s Garden Store, The Pot Company and the very chic North One Garden Centre. Those without gardens will find plenty of inspiration too – with of-the-moment terrariums and hanging planters from The Urban Botanist and Adorn Homeware – and a glorious selection of indoor plants and succulents to put in them too. MODERN VINTAGE Mixing old and new is one of the biggest trends at the moment – something seen very strongly at GROW London 2015, with companies offering everything from antique furniture to pre-loved tools to add personality to your outdoor space. Highlights include Garden Brocante and Architectural Heritage which source antique and vintage pots, planters and garden ornaments. Aldgate Home refurbishes old window frames and mirrors to create stunning

design features and The Victorian Glasshouse Company restores old greenhouses and makes new conservatories and cold frames. PRINT AND PATTERN Print and pattern can be just as much part of a garden ‘room’ as a living room - and there’s plenty to choose from at GROW. Thornback & Peel combines modernist geometric patterns and 19th century wood engravings to produce beautiful, covetable prints inspired by an eclectic mix of Victoriana, Mrs Beeton and Beatrix Potter’s Mr McGregor’s garden. Visitors won’t be able to miss The Stripes Company’s stand, overflowing with its vibrant, colourful deckchairs, fabrics and hammocks which will brighten up any garden or patio. Or if flowers are more your thing, head to Botanical Cushions for an elegant range of botanically-inspired cushions for both inside and out. CONTEMPORARY GARDEN ART A piece of art or sculpture can enhance any garden, large or small. At GROW London, a selection of artists and craftsmen will be presenting a wide range of original and fascinating pieces in a variety of materials, from stone and wire to beautiful stained glass. GROW London is organised by the team behind the Affordable Art Fair, now in 13 cities around the world

hen it comes to adding a conservatory or orangery to a dwelling or changing a glass roof for a solid one, many UK home owners have been badly advised by misinformed neighbours, double glazing suppliers and double glazing salesmen looking for a quick sale without advising you of the consequences. It may be helpful to first know what the “official” definition of a conservatory or glass extension is. Conservatories must be at ground level and have a floor area less than 30 square metres, they must be thermally separated from the dwelling by walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements, the dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the conservatory, orangery or porch, and a significant amount of the walls and roof must be of a translucent material. Nowadays there are “Solid” roof products available that are thermally efficient enough to comply with the Building Regulations. These “warm roofs” offer excellent insulation as in effect make any structure a proper extension, which is why they require prior Buildings Regulation Approval. These systems tend to have thin steel tiles covered with acrylic for durability, with the option to have roof windows. Whilst double glazed conservatories and orangeries remain the most popular choice for UK homeowners glass extensions, given that in the vast majority of cases they can

a conservatory was built under planning permission “the roof finish will have been specified in the granting of planning permission and therefore a change from glass to another finish will require the change to be approved by the local planning authority.” It is wise therefore, before ordering a new solid roof for your existing conservatory or indeed buying a new conservatory with a solid roof, to first obtain all necessary planning and Building Regulatory Approvals in writing from your local authority. Also any existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. In most cases a 150mm thick concrete strip foundation or reinforced concrete slab which bears onto original ground will be adequate. Foundations passing over drains, close to tree roots or on filled ground may require further consideration. It is even possible that a local Building Control Officer will insist that additional ventilation is retrospectively added to existing conservatory walls if a solid roof replaces a doubled glazed one, especially if the original roof had an opening roof vent or if the current double glazed windows and doors have inadequate ventilation for the size of living space. It is vital to think through and check out all the implications before ordering a replacement solid roof for an existing glass extension.

Any existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. be designed and built so that Building Regulation Approval and Planning Permission is not required, this is not the case with solid roof conservatories. That is because solid roof conservatories in the eyes of Local Planning Officers and Building Control Officers are deemed to be an actual extension, rather than a glass roof conservatory or orangery that if designed correctly, can be exempt from needing planning approval and/or Building Regs. That said, solid roof conservatories do offer a more thermally efficient option, though obviously drastically reduce the amount of light in the room, compared to a true glass extension. There are several modern day solid roof systems with attractive, thin, hard wearing tiles and insulated ceilings with down lights that comply with the thermal requirements of the Building Regulations that offer homeowners a structure that is in effect an extension rather than a conservatory with a double glazed roof. Property owners with an existing conservatory need to be mindful of the fact that they cannot legally put a solid roof on their conservatory without first obtaining Building Regulation Approval and in many cases planning permission as well, due to it’s change of use, which permitted development may or may not cover. One of the conditions attached to Permitted Development under Clause A3 is that “the materials used in any exterior work (other than materials used in the construction of a conservatory) shall be of a similar appearance to those used in the construction of the exterior of the dwelling house”. For example the development permitted by Class A states that “a pitched roof on an extension should be clad in tiles that give a similar visual appearance to those used on the existing house roof.” According to the Glass and Glazing Federation, where

A HOme ImprOvement fOr tHe WHOLe fAmILy A family in Buckinghamshire has transformed their home into a place to relax and have fun with an indoor swimming pool from Origin Leisure.

T

he kitchen in Kirsty and James’ newly renovated home was always designed to be the core of the property. Having renovated the building from a 1950’s bungalow into a 4 bedroom farmhouse style detached home, a grand kitchen was the only option. Kirsty knew she wanted a kitchen with wow factor and following a recommendation visited Davonport’s Colchester showroom. “I instantly fell in love with the whole look of the place, the service and all the stunning curved handmade furniture on display” explains Kirsty. Matt and Kerrie Smith moved from London to a detached home in rural Buckinghamshire with their three children four years ago. Having spent the years updating their country retreat by refreshing the décor, they wanted to make a big improvement to suit the whole family. After visiting a friend with a new indoor swimming pool, the couple began investigating the possibility of building a pool house in their garden. Since speaking to Origin Leisure, they haven’t looked back.

7 8 june 2015

GoinG for Gold e couple first had the idea during the 2012 Olympics. “My son has a friend who has an indoor pool and seeing the amount of flexibility it gave to the family was what swayed our decision”, explains Kerrie. “ey could have a number of children over at the house, all happily playing in the pool all day. Our kids, aged six, ten and 13, are at the age now where kicking a ball outside isn’t enough to keep them entertained for hours on end.” Andrew Ginger from Origin Leisure visited the couple and showed them other projects, while answering their questions about the build. “e second we met him we knew it was the right decision. Not only do they have 35 years’ experience, but the company understood what we wanted immediately. Most importantly, they were respectful of our budget. From start to finish they ensured we kept within our limit, with the end project costing £288,000”, says Kerrie.

p60-ESSEX-ORIGIN__ 10/06/2015 12:01 Page 2

It allows us to disappear from the house for a bit - almost like we’re on holiday!” e athletic couple also incorporated a gym and swim jet, making it the ideal space to keep active. “Matt is an impressive swimmer so the jet had to be powerful to give him a good enough workout. For me, a gym that overlooks the pool so I can be on the exercise bike while watching the kids swimming was essential.” On the outside, the building has been completed with restored bricks to match the outside of the family’s six bedroom property. Bi-folding doors open up so the family can enjoy the garden, despite the great British weather. “It can be chucking down with rain but it doesn’t matter – the children can still be outside playing and it’s safe and warm”, said Kerrie.

desiGninG The dream pool From the tiles to the taps, Origin Leisure provided options for the couple to choose from. “We had an idea of what we wanted, having used Pinterest to gain inspiration. We’d recently helped my parents rebuild their house in New York with an architect, and wanted a similar style. Origin Leisure came back to us with great suggestions based on our design brief.” Building work started in July 2014 and was completed in November, 4 weeks less than expected. e family were impressed with the efficiency and speed of the whole process. “I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a turn-key project. With Origin Leisure there was never any question that it would be subcontracted, we had one point of contact and the whole thing was managed by them, from start to finish. ey were so polite and thoughtful, even going to the extreme of moving our children’s beloved Wendy house from one part of the garden to another to make room for the swimming pool.”

a fun and funcTional space for The whole family

TickinG all The boxes As with most areas of the house, the children and the adults use the space differently. An indoor swimming pool is no exception - it had to be a space for the whole family to enjoy. “We needed it to tick all the boxes; entertain the children, while also being a space where the adults could exercise.” An indoor swimming pool from the Olympic range was tailored to fit the family’s lifestyle. “e pool needed to be shallow enough for our youngest to stand, but deep enough so adults could swim. e changing room had to be big for the children to all fit, while the sitting area is a place we can escape.

Since making the decision to add an indoor swimming pool to their home, Matt and Kerrie haven’t been happier. “A swimming pool is the best thing we’ve done to the house and we wouldn’t think twice about doing it again. We knew we were going to enjoy it, but we absolutely love it. My advice to anyone thinking about investing in a swimming pool is not to think twice. I smile every time I look at the pool and it’s brought so much fun to our home.” To speak to the experts at Origin Leisure call 01895 823366 or visit www.originleisure.com

ne of the first things you’ll need to consider when planning your new kitchen is the lighting, as electrics and fittings haave to be installed at the start of the project, before plastering, ering, decorating and the fittingg.. It’s an integral part of any scheme and this is your one chance to get it right. The key to a successful scheme lies in layering the effects, so you should try to zone the lighting according to its use - working (task), dining and mood (ambient) and creating the wow factor (feature). A

s I explained in last month’s issue, I am a Luxury Travel Specialist working with the award-winning tour operator ITC Luxury Travel providing a one to one service to my own portfolio of clients in this area. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to visit and experience many of the destinations and resorts I sell, and in May this year I returned to the Maldives…which I have to admit is my favourite holiday location. e Maldives is famed for its powder white sands and crystal clear blue ocean, and I often tell clients it really is more beautiful than the brochures and pictures portray. It truly is ‘paradise’, but there is more to the Maldives than sun bathing and swimming. Within these islands you can enjoy a wide range of dining experiences, amazing spas, world-class diving sites and snorkelling, and of course many of the top resorts are child friendly too.

9 2 june 2015

is year I visited two stunning resorts, both perfect for couples or families, and both offering impressive facilities. Four SeaSonS Landaa Giraavaru I began my holiday with a 30 minute scenic seaplane ride from Malé airport to Landaa Giraavaru; an island flanked by a two kilometre lagoon and stunning white beaches. So what lies beyond the picture perfect exterior at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru? First of all the island is situated in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so it’s the perfect place to experience the wonders of the underwater world, including turtles, manta rays and whale sharks, making it superb for divers, but also for those who simply enjoy snorkelling and exploring the lagoon. ere is also an array of other watersports available, including kite-surfing, wakeboarding and ‘sea bobs’. I found the resort had a spacious and natural, relaxed feel

p92-BUCKS-ITCTRAVEL__ 11/06/2015 14:04 Page 2

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru

about it which guests can enjoy as they cycle around the island on their complimentary bikes that are provided with every villa. Or if that’s just too energetic, a golf buggy ride is just a phone call away. Dining experiences are varied and range from sushi and teppanyaki to Lebanese and gourmet Italian, plus there are no restaurant restrictions for guests taking the half board option, which I would recommend for being both generous and practical. e Spa & Ayurvedic Retreat offers a tranquil sanctuary with a range of innovative treatments - a night spa treatment performed in the middle of the island surrounded by candles is a ‘must’ for honeymooners! ere is a fantastic kids’ club, and the resort has a number of two bedroom villas which are ideal for larger families. But it’s also the little things that make this resort so special, for example, the staff can arrange a surprise treasure hunt around the resort for all the family and then you decide the final treasure…from an ice cream sundae to a sunset cruise! Of course all of the above comes with the legendary Four Seasons first class service too. one&onLy reethi rah One&Only Reethi Rah is one of the largest and most luxurious resorts in the Maldives. Last month they celebrated 10 years in business, so I was very keen to catch up on what they were doing to mark their decade of luxury. From the moment I stepped on board One&Only’s luxury yacht at Malé airport harbour for my 45 minute transfer to the resort, I knew I was about to experience something extraordinary. It’s impossible to summarise everything I witnessed and enjoyed here but a few of the highlights included dining at Tapasake; a restaurant that serves world-class Japanese food with a modern twist, and the über-stylish Epicure; a private dining room concealed behind 3,000 wine bottles - a haven for connoisseurs of fine food and wine. During the day you can practice your golf swing into the

ocean with naturally biodegradable golf balls filled with fish food, whilst the more adventurous can go rock climbing on a 26 foot climbing wall (the only one in the Maldives) or try fly-boarding, which involves a water jet pack being attached to your feet. But I have to admit, I didn’t try either of these! A sandbank experience is a ‘must’ for anyone visiting the Maldives, and at Reethi Rah it is no exception – you are taken by speedboat to the sandbank where you can enjoy a cocktail and then perhaps wade into the clear waters that lap the sand for a gentle swim or snorkel. Back on the island the One&Only Spa has indoor/outdoor heat experiences, vitality and crystal rooms, saunas, ice fountains and more. After a hard afternoon of being pampered in the spa there is nothing better than indulging in complimentary afternoon tea at the Rah Bar. Accommodation is chic, spacious and very private which I believe in today’s world is far more important than high-tech gizmos and fancy lighting; it’s a true retreat from busy modern life. Like Four Seasons Landaa Giravaaru, One&Only Reethi Rah has a fantastic kids’ club, making this a perfect choice for families too. And if any family member is a keen footballer they can join the daily match on the Astroturf football pitch where David Beckham and his sons have played. What Four Seasons and One&Only have both managed to achieve are resorts that cater beautifully for both couples and families with neither compromising on luxury and indulgence. I hope I have whet your appetite for the Maldives, and if you would like to find out more please do give me a call or email me to talk through your next big travel idea. leading light T

he Riverlight sits in a beautiful spot at Bourne End Marina, with unrivalled views that allow diners to see for miles along the ames, creating a perfect setting to enjoy the delights on offer. Part of the Coopers Independent Trading Company (e group also owns Coopers Coffee Bar in Marlow), from the moment you enter the restaurant you gain a sense of how perfect the dining experience will be. e staff are polite and attentive, however, what struck us most was their knowledge and enthusiasm. A fairly small menu (four choices of starter and main) actually always pleases me, as it shows that what is available is freshly prepared, is well chosen and more importantly, likely to be loved and recommended by the chef. Asking for recommendations we opted for the Orkney scallops with Stornaway black pudding and the crispy carver duck breast cooked sous vide broccoli purée poached cherries smocked duck heart and char grilled broccoli salad. e scallops were truly delicious, cooked to perfection and a really good size. e duck arrived with a glass lid over, filled with smoke. e waiter dramatically lifted the lid allowing aroma of the hazy contents to creep out, awakening our senses to the smoky flavouring surrounding the duck. Following our starter we enjoyed a small taster dish; confit loch duart salmon with Beetroot hummus. Main courses were chosen, the trio of Dean Timpson Pork and the Herb Crusted Lamb, saddle pea purée, broad beans wild garlic tomato and mint salsa with a ravioli of braised shoulder. Both were delightful. e pork was served with a pomme mousseline, butternut squash puree and savoy cabbage. We had chosen to go with the drinks pairing service that they offer, whereby the waiter will suggest a couple of options of wines or beers to accompany your chosen meal. is was perfect because it allowed us to enjoy a fine wine per course, rather than having to choose a bottle that you hoped might suit most courses. Pre dessert was lemon posset to cleanse our pallet in readiness for the main desserts. Here, the pineapple dish was

chosen, along with the chefs cheese choice. Again, both were both delicious in flavour and beautiful in presentation. is restaurant is perfect in so many ways, the food is first class, the place has a friendly feel to it and the views are amazing. On top of that the staff are enthusiastic about their food and wines, and will give you as much or as little information as you wish on where it has come from and how the tastes work together. Coopers is an independent company which has stemmed from specialty coffee – driven by the vision of James Patch. As a team, striving to provide excellence and quality in both the food and the service is paramount , as well as offering that little bit of uniqueness in each of their venues. e team is passionate, creative and full of personality – and this all goes to creating a fantastic and interesting service for those wanting to try a new experience. Coopers brainchild James says: “We are excited about launching Riverlight and are working hard on getting it right, we will bring all our values to the restaurant in Bourne End Marina and welcome people to enjoy our atmosphere in a superb setting over-looking the river. We will have seasonal menu changes and serve what we love to eat and drink. A key aim is to provide a place where people can come to have a fantastic night, leaving with amazing, special memories - something that will stay with them forever, through service, the food and drink offering as well as the place itself and the setting.” If you have not yet tried Riverlight, make sure you get booked in whilst we enjoy the summer weather and spectacular views, James and his team look forward to welcoming you along. ■

ernard, a successful architect living in Paris, has his hands full in the romance department. ere comes summer! – With the arrival of June brings the excitement and anticipation of balmy days ahead. It is also the time to celebrate the English Strawberry season – although the supermarkets have featured them on their shelves for a while June is the month when the Pick your own Farm starts to flourish. What better way than to spend a summer’s day out strawberry picking for delicious berries. Look out for Sweet Eve and Eve Delight, high in natural sugar with a perfumed aroma, English Rose for its orange zest flavour and Jubilee for a good all-rounder. e peak season runs from June to July but if there is good weather the English strawberry can still be very much enjoyed up until the end of September. e best thing about strawberries is

that they can be made into a spectacular dessert, eaten straight from the punnet for picnics or just simply with cream or ice cream. Or as here if you have a glut of the strawberries from the garden can be transformed into a smooth, refreshing sorbet served with macerated strawberries and a vanilla cream– a perfect cooling dessert for a warm day. At the restaurant we serve this delicious sorbet as part of our Five Course Lunch Tasting menu accompanied with a star anise financier.
