nce the country home of the Rothschilds, Waddesdon Manor is a Renaissance-style château housing one of the finest collections of French 18th century decorative arts in the world. e Wine Cellars, modelled on the private cellars at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild contain thousands of bottles of Rothschild wines dating back to 1868. e Victorian garden has a parterre, aviary, seasonal displays, fountains and statuary. Top quality food and wines are served throughout the day in the restaurants, and the award-winning shops offer a superb range of gifts and wine. e 2015 season begins on Wednesday 25th March, with an abundance of new highlights to offer visitors. Exhibitions inside the house include an exploration of the mineral wealth of the collection at Waddesdon, looking at the precious materials incorporated in the furniture, sculpture and the fabric of the building itself. In celebration of the re-display of Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild’s remarkable collection of treasures at the British Museum known as the “Waddesdon Bequest”, Waddesdon will be exploring the Renaissance-style furnishings that surrounded it when it was in the Smoking Room. e Waddesdon at War exhibition continues in the Family Room, and a contemporary installation by artist Jane Wildgoose in the Green Boudoir and Lobby explores the themes of loss and mourning, memory and bequest.

In the Coach House exhibition space from April there will be a photographic exhibition curated by architectural historian Gavin Stamp, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Victorian Society, and following this from 17th June onwards, there will be an exhibition of drawings made over seven decades by Henry Moore, on loan from the Henry Moore Foundation. A major new acquisition for the contemporary art collection in the gardens arrives on 17th April to the North Front, in the form of a pair of giant candlesticks comprised of glass wine bottles (from Chateau Lafite Rothschild) set on a steel armature and lit from within by fibre-optic strands. Lafite by Joana Vasconcelos symbolises the Rothschild family’s connection to the world of wine and is accompanied by a wine trail in the House and a range of wine related events planned throughout the year. In other garden news, artist Simon Periton will be creating some striking 3D bedding displays on the Parterre for visitors to enjoy in the summer months, and on the weekend of 20-21st June we have a brand new outdoor event! “Feast” will see the North Front of the Manor transformed with elaborately decorated tables for visitors to take a seat at and enjoy a picnic or sample some of the delicious food on offer from one of the handpicked artisan food and wine stalls. A range of extraordinary and captivating performances await to delight and surprise young and old alike. ■

vondale Care Home has gained something of a reputation as a centre of excellence for care in the region, with its manager, Shaun Canavan, being awarded the prestigious “Care Manager of the Year” prize at the recent National Care Awards. On Sunday 8th March, a wonderful example of this heart for caring was displayed as staff raised money for children with cancer. And this was not by shaking tins or sponsoring the baking of cakes: on this occasion staff chose to walk across burning ashes.

excellence in care became hot ash. en the fire walking began. Divided by no status or department the staff of Avondale walked through both flame and heated embers for the belief in compassion, care and for the children of Little Heroes. Each member of staff encouraged and supported the other as they proceeded, with belief laughter and high morale overcoming fears and pain. rough sponsorship from colleagues, family, friends and the wider community, and incredible £1200 was raised for the cause.

This was an amazing fun event and it really brought all the team together is dramatic and symbolic display took place in the grounds of the care home, with many staff members freely giving their time, energy (and for some their physical comfort), volunteering to display their belief and passion for those in need. e beneficiary of the event was Little Heroes Cancer Trust, a charity that is committed to give support and bring moments of joy to children with cancer and their families. e event began with a secure and safe environment being prepared and laid out in the car park of Avondale Care Home by a member of the charity. Wood was laid out and set alight in the form of a pathway and the tinder’s

Shaun, the manager of Avondale commented: “is was an amazing fun event and it really brought all the team together. ere were a few sore feet the day after, but we all felt the cause was well worth it.” More information about Porthaven can be found at www.porthaven.co.uk ■

Hedsor House a venue for all occasions

F

ilm and television buffs will instantly recognise magnificent Hedsor House — the award-winning corporate events, wedding and filming venue in Taplow, Buckinghamshire. e Georgian country mansion has featured in a host of high-profile films and popular TV programmes including Downton Abbey, Midsomer Murders, 24 and Spooks. Its most famous role of all came in 2013 as the fictional ‘Beecham House’ – a stately retirement home for opera singers – in the acclaimed movie Quartet directed by Hollywood legend Dustin Hoffman. Quartet, with its star-studded cast of Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Sheridan Smith and Michael Gambon, was filmed exclusively on the picturesque historic 100-acre country estate. e stunning backdrop for Hoffman's directorial debut of the entertaining and uplifting story Quartet, based on Sir Ronald Harwood's stage play of the same name, brought Hedsor House international acclaim. Hedsor House has hosted numerous movies and leading stars including Nicole Kidman in Golden Compass and more recently Johnny Depp in Mortdecai, which went on general release in the UK in January. e action comedy film features an all-star cast that also includes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn with Jeff Goldblum, and Paul Bettany. After filming the movie Johnny Depp wrote in Hedsor House’s visitor’s book: “An absolutely amazing place! Many thanks for allowing us this visit. Much respect.” Although the house is extremely popular as a super location for the film and TV industry, it is primarily an award-winning weddings and events venue. Steeped in history, Hedsor House, once the home of royalty, is set in beautiful parkland just 15 minutes from Heathrow and 30 minutes from London. e picturesque location is privately owned and provides a magnificent backdrop for a wide range of events, exhibitions, parties, weddings and product launches. Quintessentially English, Hedsor House was the home of Augusta the Dowager Princess of Wales, mother of King George III and founder of Kew Gardens. Originally designed by Sir William

2 2 march 2015

Chambers, architect of Somerset House, the house is set in parkland that has been enjoyed by royalty dating back to 1166. King George III and Queen Charlotte helped design the house and chose the location of the house in its marvellous setting high above the River ames because of its stunning views. Queen Victoria was a regular visitor from Windsor Castle a century later with historic diary entries of the Royal children playing croquet on Hedsor’s lawns. e house was rebuilt in 1868 and unusually modelled in the Italian villa style. It featured an all-new domed Grand Hall rather than the traditional open courtyard which set it apart from the grand manors of the time. is stunning domed hall is the focal point of Hedsor House to this day. Given as a wedding gift to Phillip and Florence Shephard in 1932 by Phillip Shephard’s parents, Hedsor House has remained in the Shephard family for four generations. e family lived in Hedsor House until 1952 when they moved to another home on the estate where they still live today. Hedsor House was then leased out as a US Air Force secret communications base in the Cold War, then an international computer company’s headquarters and finally returning to the family in 2003. Today it is run by Nick, Mark and Hamish Shephard, whose father was born in the house and the grandsons of Phillip Shephard. Hedsor House is now an award-winning venue for weddings, events and filming. Last year Hedsor House hosted 92 weddings as well as many events, team building days and country pursuits, all enjoying the privacy and exclusivity along with an array of superb facilities. e extensive grounds and sumptuous settings are perfect for occasions all sizes. Weddings range from an intimate 60-guest ceremony, a 140-person wedding breakfast or receptions for up to 800-people in a marquee on the beautifully manicured lawns. For corporate clients, Hedsor House is constantly striving to broaden its appeal with new innovations and has installed a mile long 4x4 track in the grounds which is ideal for car manufacturers to showcase their vehicles. ■

Rackham’s technique and other graphic illustration methods using pencil, ink and watercolour. Eloise Chapman, Curator at the River & Rowing Museum, says: ‘We are thrilled to have such iconic work at the Museum - Rackham’s work resonates with adults and children alike. Although his illustrations are almost a century old, they are still a definitive source of imagination and fantasy. Whether you read Alice in Wonderland, Wind in the Willows, or Grimm’s Fairy Tales, these illustrations provided a window into another world. is is a major exhibition for us, and we are delighted to launch into 2015 with Rackham.” e collection has been loaned by Rackham collector Ann Haley, and will be on display at the Museum from 5 February 31 May 2015. e exhibition will include a short film about Rackham’s life and hands-on material for younger visitors. e award-winning River & Rowing Museum, ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by e Times, announced record visitor numbers last year and looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed programme for the whole family. ■

Delight or Disappointment?

WhAt to Do AFter ‘NAtioNAl oFFer DAy’ Article by Darlene Fisher, director of education at Newland College

W

hat is more nerve-wracking in the life of an eleven year old than waiting to hear whether you have the school place you dream of? is year, amid legitimate concern about the number of school places available, one in four students in Buckinghamshire have not been offered a place at their school of choice. While this is disappointing, it is important to remember that this cannot be a reflection of the talent or ability of individual students. Indeed, the language of failure would be inappropriate where so many children find themselves having to look beyond their first choice. At this moment, you are focused intensively on what to do next. Here is a simple guide to making sure your next decision meets the unique needs of your child. • Appeal: first it is important to consider your right to appeal the decision. While the chances of success are slim, for some students this is worth pursuing. e first step is to do your research and lodge a written Admission Appeal, within the published timescales (usually 20 days after receiving the admission letter). You need to be clear about what issues you are addressing in the appeal. Both the Buckinghamshire County Council Education website and the Eleven Plus exams website contain helpful advice and information on the appeals process. http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/education/ schools/admissions-and-moving-school • Know your options: re-visit the school you have been offered and talk to the Head and the parents. You might feel much happier about it second time around. Nevertheless, you may find that the reasons you did not make the school your first choice could still be relevant. en, take stock of your situation. Investigate other schools in your local area,

especially those you might not have included when you made your original choice, and talk to their Admissions teams and Head Teachers. By thinking more broadly about what you want from an education, you are more likely to find the right match between your child and a school. Importantly, be clear about your ‘non-negotiables’ in terms of what you want from an education, and what you are willing to compromise on. • Stay positive: For students hoping for places at top-flight universities, there is a range of factors that affect your chances. ere is now much psychological and pedagogical research showing that we optimise our learning capacity when we are feeling confident and happy. It is becoming increasingly clear that the schools that understand how to embed well-being and resilience of students and staff into their ethos are more likely to serve the ambitions of students and parents alike. Creativity in the curriculum boosts self-esteem and increases confidence in many subjects beyond the obvious ones of drama, music and art. e way teachers help students to learn is vital for successful navigation to the next stage in their educational journey. A school that is not just focused on academic success but champions self-discipline, compassion, risk taking, learning from mistakes and open-mindedness is fulfilling its mandate to educate the whole child. While not getting a place at your first choice school may initially be a blow, it opens up new opportunities to investigate what you’re really looking for in an education. It may just give you a chance to find a school that explains not simply that it can achieve excellent academic results, but how this will be achieved for your child in particular. ■

River & Rowing Museum to present major exhibitions by local artists this spring: Forest to Furniture and Artists & Studios

T

he River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-ames, is delighted to announce an exhibition programme including the work of two award-winning local residents, exploring the interconnection between creative processes and the environment that surrounds them.

PhiliP Koomen: Forest to Furniture From 14 February until 7 June To celebrate 40 years of working in Henley-On-ames, Philip Koomen’s new exhibition at the River & Rowing Museum examines the relationship between forestry, design and craftsmanship in wood and the creative process. e work on display will demonstrate the rich diversity of furniture by this designer and master craftsman, acknowledged as one of Britain’s finest craftsmen and recognised for ‘excellence in design’ by Her Majesty the Queen. e exhibition will survey a wide range of commissions, including ecclesiastical work from Dorchester Abbey through to exquisite Egyptian-style cabinets. e exhibition will showcase his extraordinary achievements in a career spanning 40 years. Projects on display will illustrate the evolution of Philip’s work, including his pioneering semi-bespoke range from the 1980s, his sculptural furniture from the 1990s notably the iconic Pondlife bench - and the development of a local cycle system to source under-utilized timber from local woodlands. A highlight and one of Koomen’s most recent pieces, the OneOak table made from a 222-year- old oak from Blenheim Palace, will be housed in the Museum alongside other award-winning designs. e exhibition will include Koomen’s work with lesser-known species of wood. Two major commissions from the International Hay Literary Festival, including a model of the 8-metre-long Wave & Splash bench in tulipwood and the chair design for the stage furniture, will be on display. 3 6 march 2015

e exhibition also features a series of experiments in wood, Ideas in the Making, a research project supported by Arts Council England, which shows how ideas begin and questions the boundaries between art, craft and design. Koomen has developed a range of interactive adult and children’s activities in collaboration with the Oxfordshire-based woodland charity, Sylva Foundation. is includes a talk and activity morning, e OneOak Project: following the full life story of one oak tree, by Jen Hurst, on 21 March to demonstrate the link between forestry and wooden objects.

Artists & studios: PrivAte views by simon murison-bowie Opens 7 March until 31 May e winner of Oxfordshire Artweeks’ Mary Moser Prize, Simon Murison-Bowie, will be showing rare images of artists working in their studios, revealing the relationship between them and the space they inhabit during their creative process. e exhibition will explore workspaces that have become special ‘natural habitats’ to the people who create them and create in them. is show looks at the wealth of talent in Oxfordshire, highlighting some of the region’s finest artists. e photographs extend the physical experience of Philip Koomen’s exhibition into the studios and workshops of other artists and crafts people, giving a glimpse of the absorption of the individual involved in creative processes of all kinds. e award-winning River & Rowing Museum, ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by e Times, looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed programme for the whole family. ■

G

uests who attend Anthony Nolan’s 21st annual black-tie event, the Daisy Ball, will be celebrating the charity’s lifesaving work at the prestigious Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on Saturday 16th May 2015. Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma, by matching remarkable individuals willing to donate their bone marrow to the people who desperately need lifesaving transplants. To help a patient in need, a donor must be found who has a matching tissue type, and there are millions of variations. It can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. As it costs £100 to recruit each new person to their existing register of potential donors, it’s essential for Anthony Nolan to raise valuable funds and find more lifesaving matches. Last year, Daisy Ball Twenty raised over £240,000 – which helped to add more potential lifesavers to the register and conduct vital research to help people with blood cancer have the best possible chance of life. This spectacular, entertaining, and lifesaving event regularly attracts over 750 guests. The night includes a scrumptious three-course meal, inspiring real-life stories and world-class cabaret entertainment. There is also a surprise headline act, and previous performers have included The Three Degrees, The Osmonds, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Heather Small and the cast of The Jersey Boys.

5 0 march 2015

Guests will have the opportunity to win fabulous prizes in the raffle and to bid on incredible experiences throughout a live auction. Past prizes have included luxurious holidays to South Africa and Canada, a private screening at Everyman Cinemas, once-in-a-lifetime cooking experiences with celebrity chefs Brian Turner and Angela Hartnett and unique sporting memorabilia. Anthony Nolan is seeking donations of exciting raffle prizes to raise as much as possible from the event.

beaconsfield jewellery s pring has sprung and wedding season is well and truly upon us now. For many people, it will be the biggest day of their lives, with the memories lasting a forever. We spoke to the team at Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery, who are hosting their first annual Wedding Event, from Monday 13th April to Saturday 25th April, at their boutique in Old Beaconsfield. Established in 2011, Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery quickly gained a reputation for stunning and unique jewellery, that wasn’t available anywhere else. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength, with an exclusive collection of luxury brands, such as Messika, Georg Jensen and Baccarat, to name a few, as well as an ever-growing and evolving collection of coloured stone and diamond pieces created by their in-house designer and goldsmith. Wedding rings and bridal jewellery has always been an integral part of the business and because of this, owner, Peter Ungar and the team have decided to host a special Wedding Event, between 13th – 25th April, where couples can enjoy exclusive discounts and offers on wedding rings and bridal jewellery. We spoke to Peter and asked why Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery has been so highly recommended by couples since opening in the Old Town. “It’s the little details that matter, as the wedding rings have a habit of becoming another item on an ever growing list of wedding related jobs that need to be ticked off. is is why we like to make the experience a bit more special, from having your engagement ring cleaned while you browse or enjoying a glass of champagne while trying a few pieces on. We try our best to make it less of a chore and more of a moment to be savored. During our Wedding event, we will be able to offer even more of the little touches that will make the experience a really memorable and special one”. With a full design service in-house, if you have an idea, one of the team will be able to sit down with you and create an initial sketch to start the process. “We are finding that traditional plain bands are still very popular, but we are seeing more and more people opt for a diamond set wedding ring”. Ungar & Ungar, is a brand that has always proved to be a hit ever since the store opened. Created by Peter Ungar’s cousin, they specialize in diamond and coloured stone set bands along with a finishing process known as ‘millgraining’, which gives the rings an antique look, something which is very popular at the moment. Available in 18ct white, yellow and rose gold, as well as platinum, it is clear why Ungar & Ungar remains one of Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery’s bestselling bridal brands. It is not hard to see why Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery, has become one of the area’s premier jewellers, and by visiting them during their Wedding Event between 13th – 25th April, you’ll be sure to take

full advantage of their comprehensive and personal service that is guaranteed to take much of the stress out of this vital part of your special day. e event will be on an appointment only basis, so please call one of the team on 01494 677782 to make sure you don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity to make your wedding jewellery that little bit more special. ■

sugar WhiTe POiSOn? We know that high levels of cholesterol, particularly low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (lDl-c) and triglycerides (another form of lipid) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in at risk individuals.

T

he conventional wisdom is that a high intake of saturated fat is largely responsible for high cholesterol and triglyceride readings. ere is now increasing evidence that simple sugars, such as glucose and rapidly absorbed carbohydrates, are associated with an adverse blood fat picture by raising LDL-C and lowering high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C or so called ‘good cholesterol’) levels and also raising triglyceride levels.

e problem appears to be due to the quantity of blood sugar and the rate at which it arrives at the liver. Normally sugar is converted into glycogen (a form of carbohydrate store) in the liver, but if the liver is presented with too much sugar too quickly, the excess is converted into fat, which then translates into adverse blood lipid levels. High levels of insulin probably also

In order to control adverse blood lipids we recommend that carbohydrate be taken in a slow release form. Good examples of this are whole grains (which incidentally have been shown to have a protective effect against bowel cancer), legumes, and vegetables all of which are prevalent in the so-called ‘Mediterranean diet’.

Here at DOCTORnow we have designed a Cardiovascular Health Medical examination. We perform a comprehensive history assessment including blood pressure check, ECG and blood tests. By identifying current problems we can offer lifestyle changes and advice to reduce health risk. ■

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CHAIR H ow many times have you got up from your chair and felt your body scream at you “get me a new chair or I will go on strike”? We are all gradually taking on the message that when we spend too much time sitting – be it in the office or at home in front of the TV – we can be seriously adding to the aches and strains our bodies have to put up with in ordinary everyday life. So it makes sense to try to address this concern and try to spend more time NOT sitting – going off for a walk or perhaps changing your routine in the office so that less time is spent sitting in a chair. e other side of the equation is to improve the way you sit. Martin Davies, Managing Director at Chiltern Care Chairs in Chesham, feels that most people are sitting in chairs that are too low, too soft and too deep for them. He says that “ people are mistaking comfort for softness. If you sink down into a chair then your pelvis rotates and this can put tremendous strain on your spine”. Martin encourages us to pay more attention to the way we sit and specifically to concern ourselves with chair dimensions when we choose a new chair. Inappropriate seat dimensions can affect circulation and lead to pressure build-ups whereas a good fitting chair improves your support and, of course, comfort. e back should be higher enough to provide ample support to the spine and the neck, perhaps with the help of a neck pillow and arms should be at a comfortable

6 8 m a r c h 20 1 5

height so that you are neither collapsing your column nor hunching your shoulders when sitting. You may also want a chair with arms that are sturdy enough to support you when you’re getting in and out of your chair. Some people are looking for a reclining chair that elevates their feet when sitting. Others benefit from a chair that gently raises them to a standing position at the touch of a button. e secret, Martin believes, is to try sitting in lots of different chairs to get a real idea of what “too high, too low, too deep etc” actually feels like. For more information on chair sizes Martin and his team have made a very informative video explaining what to look out for when choosing a new chair – it’s well worth a view. You can find it on You Tube – just type in “How To Choose a High Seat Or Fireside Chair”. Alternatively you can find it on their website at www.chilterncarechairs.co.uk. You can try a wide selection of chairs (rising and reclining chairs, high seat chairs, office seating etc) at their showroom at 21 Germain Street, Chesham. ey have free customer parking there too. Alternatively, Martin and his team are happy to bring a selection of suitable chairs to you to try at home. Just give them a ring on 01494 793129. Chiltern Care Chairs has been trading in Chesham now since 1993 – in fact they’re 21 this year so Many Happy Returns! ey certainly have the key of the door to better seating! ■

WHAT THE VICTORIANS DID FOR US When the Victorians first dreamt of growing exotic plants in glass houses they could hardly have imagined that they were starting a lifestyle trend that continues to this day

T

oday, the immensely elegant glass buildings of yesteryear are designed from state of the art materials to create living spaces that are used for everything from dining rooms to kitchens, from playrooms to gyms and kitchens to offices. Homeowners have conservatories that are separated by doors from the rest of the house whilst others create vast openings that allow the conservatory extension to blend seamlessly with the home’s interior. Replica Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian models finished with detailed architectural features compete for popularity with stunningly contemporary glass rooms where the emphasis is on creating impact from clean, simple forms. But how exactly do you make the leap from the building of your dreams to the reality you can live in every day? Speak to any homeowner that has embarked on a building project and they will almost certainly be able to regale you with enough horror stories of when things have gone wrong to put you off for good. Certainly building a

7 0 march 2015

conservatory or orangery is a major building project which is why you need to find a company that has a proven track record, shares your vision, your enthusiasm and, most importantly, appreciates your budget and is prepared to work with you to minimise disruption. Hazlemere Conservatories is a conservatory specialist with showrooms in High Wycombe and Welwyn Garden City with a penchant for helping their customers create distinctive conservatories and so know that the dream doesn’t always match the reality. “During the 80’s and a large part of the 90’s conservatories were being stuck on to what seemed like just about everyone’s houses. Looking at many of the conservatories that were built during this era, you could perhaps be forgiven for thinking they’ve been there far longer. However building materials evolve and in the last 10 years there has been a considerable step-change in the quality of conservatories that are available. Today’s buildings should look good well into the future as long as they are designed and built with modern materials as an

p70-BUCKS-HAZLEMERE__ 10/03/2015 15:50 Page 2

integral part of your home.” According to Hazlemere, one of the crucial keys to a successful conservatory or orangery build is about determining from the outset if you expect to use the room all year round. If you do then heating it needs to be as big a consideration as keeping it cool in the summer. With advances in glass and framing technology it is indeed possible for your conservatory or orangery to provide a snug retreat in the winter and a cool haven in the summer but the specification has to be right. The only way for a company to determine what your conservatory’s exact specification needs to be is to conduct a detailed site survey which will take into account the position of the conservatory in relation to both your home and the

You need to consider how you will heat your conservatory before you begin to ensure relevant works are carried out direction of the sun upon it. Nowadays, specialised glazing is available that reflects the sun’s heat and is particularly useful in South facing conservatories or orangeries. Tinted glass is also an important consideration if you want to use your conservatory to watch television or use a computer. Effective opening vents in the ceiling of the conservatory will allow hot air in the summer months to escape quickly. These essential vents can be manually or electrically operated and some companies offer automatic rain detectors to ensure vents close as soon as it begins to rain. Installing electrics for a fan will help to disperse warm air upwards in the summer but can also be reversed in the winter to keep the warm air down rather than letting it escape upwards. Heat extractors are a highly effective way of removing warm air at the hottest times of the year and help to control humidity. Air exchange systems work in a similar way but with the added benefit of bringing warm air back into the building as well. Opting for air conditioning is always an option although it can be expensive to run and will require more on-going maintenance. The professionals at Hazlemere Conservatories advise that with so much glass in a conservatory (how energy

efficient the specification), some heat loss is inevitable, however by selecting the best type of sealed units available, this can be minimised to ensure that you can use your orangery or conservatory all year round. Just as glass can be specified to reflect the sun’s heat, there are also reflective coatings that keep the heat inside a conservatory which is invaluable in colder north facing buildings. You need to consider how you will heat your conservatory before you begin to ensure relevant works are carried out as the building work progresses. To heat your conservatory you can opt to extend your existing central heating system or you can install an independent heating system just for the new area. If you do plan to extend your existing central heating then you should install individual room thermostats to ensure that you can increase the heat in the cooler conservatory area when you need it without affecting the heating in the rest of the house. If you opt for an independent heating source then consider low level wall mounted radiators or underfloor heating for the best aesthetic effect, both of which are easily installed as part of the main build programme. Whilst the choices to be made are undoubtedly complex, an experienced conservatory company will be able to guide you through the best combination of options for your particular conservatory and ensure that the cost of making it useable all year round is built in to your quote from outset and thus avoid adding ‘extras’ in at a later stage. By taking the time to ensure that you have considered all of the available options you stand a good chance of having your dream conservatory and enjoying the glass house legacy the Victorians left us. “It was really important for me to have a kitchen that not only looked beautiful but worked brilliantly too”

aving just bought a beautiful stone house in an Oxfordshire village, Ann’s next priority was to create a stylish but practical kitchen As someone who loves cooking and entertaining, Ann knew she would be spending most of her spare time in the kitchen. “It was really important for me to have a kitchen that not only looked beautiful but worked brilliantly too” comments Ann. e Teddy Edwards showroom on Oxford’s Woodstock Road was the clear frontrunner “it was obviously beautifully made, traditional furniture but with a lighter, simpler touch and very clean lines” she continues. e island, positioned to enjoy views of the garden, links the kitchen and the dining area. It gives the sociable aspect so important to Ann, and provides plenty of preparation space and a sink, making it very practical for

MAKE AN ENTRANCE! How to create a welcoming hallway

E

ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of

essential. If you have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. STORAGE SOLUTIONS Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger

FEATURE FLOORING Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words. LET THE LIGHT IN Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is 7 4 march 2015

your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. MAKE A FEATURE Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

MAKE A FEATURE OF IT A feature wall is a great way to experiment with colour and bold pattern and is a simple way to make a room look sophisticated, stylish and chic. A feature wall can add interest, style and energy to your room. As a basic rule, choose a wall that’s as plain as possible, without doors or windows. Interior designer Joanna Wood says it’s important you don’t just think of walls, either. “A chimney breast or alcove both make great features,” she says. And, says Joanna, as you’re going to be drawing attention to your chosen wall, think hard about whether it’s worth showing off. “Does it have beautiful architectural elements or will you be highlighting a piece of furniture that you really love,” she says. Placing your bed against a feature wall makes for an unusual and striking bed head, for example. Paint the wall in a bold colour (strong and sexy shades such as plum and sapphire can work well) or for a more sophisticated and glam touch, cover you wall in a material like velvet or silk. For a subtle effect, choose a complementary shade to

that of the rest of the room; a darker or lighter intensity of the same colour as the other three walls can really work well. If you’re into a bit more drama then pick contrasting colours - those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (a warm brown with duck egg blue for example). Don’t just think of paint and wallpaper when creating a feature wall. “You can use a huge variety of materials,” says Joanna. “Materials like suede, silk or wood add texture and interest. And if you have a dark room or corridor, mirrors or metallic reflective wallpapers, which are very on trend right now, are a great choice. They feel opulent and also bounce and reflect light around the space.” Advances in digital printing mean you can now have a huge variety of photographic images blown up to wall size, if you are looking for something different. Or go 3D: a collection of objects can make a striking wall feature. Hang framed photos across an entire wall or make a feature of your album collection. Feature walls are a simple but striking way to update your room. Choose the right wall and be bold with colour and you’ll soon have a room that hits all the right notes.

CREATE A LUXURY OASIS

W

e love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams. Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.

THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the

7 8 march 2015

room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.

AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.

LITTLE LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

It just goes to show, the recipe for a perfec perfect kitchen is highly personal. There’s no one right ‘look’ - what matters is that this space suits you and the way you want to livve. “There are several factors to take into account when choosing a kitchen,” advises Craig Burgess-Allen, UK manager for Rational kitchens. “Consider the style of the rest of your home, especially if you haave an open-plan layout with spaces flowing into one another, as you want to avoid choosing a style which jars with the rest of your design scheme. “Equally Equallyy, don’t feel obliged in a period home to install

On a practical note, avoid glossy kitchen doors if you’re house proud and haave small children, as they’ll show up every smudg y fingerprint!”

An interview with Magnus Strom

A short summAry on whAt An Architect does? Our role as architects is varied and our scope of work changes form project to project. We typically provide a full architectural service in accordance with the Royal Institute of British Architects' (RIBA) work stages. at means that we are involved from the beginning to the completion and sometimes even when the building is in use. We don’t just design buildings. We are also responsible for obtaining planning consents, building control approval, producing construction information drawings and specifications, assisting in finding contractors that we tender the works to - or negotiate with. We provide an inspection service when the project is on site to ensure that it is being built to the contract documents and we certify payments ensuring that clients only pay contractors for work that is actually done, and to the specified standard. Finally, after completion we assist with identifying potential defects and making sure these are put right before we sign the project off. About you – tAlk About you, how you got stArted, some of your fAvourite work? I can’t remember ever wanting to be anything else than an architect, and my interest in architecture, furniture and design started when I was a child. It was therefore extremely frustrating that I couldn't get into a school of architecture in Sweden, as my school grades weren't high enough! Instead, I was welcomed to study in the UK, where I graduated at the top of my year with several student prizes as well as being nominated for the RIBA Silver Medal. After graduation I worked briefly in London and Dublin, and then for many years in the south of England. I set up my own practice in 2010 with the intention of specialising in residential projects, as this is where my passion lies. e practice is slowly growing and we were chosen as one of twenty, for Wallpaper Magazine's Emerging Architecture Practices 2012 from around the world, and in 2014, our project the Quest was shortlisted for the ‘Best Future House" for the World Architecture Singapore in Dublin. is project is now on site and to completed later this year. We are currently working on eight one off houses and two London remodelling projects.

8 6 march 2015

how would you describe your style? I suppose our architecture is simple, clean and contemporary, without being minimal, as we love to use natural materials. Coming from Sweden, there is undeniably a “Swedishness” to my work. is is not necessarily just about Scandinavian Design, but rather about a way of life. Swedish Functionalism was born out of a belief in humanism, tradition, moderation, handcrafted perfectionism, modesty, quietude and purposefulness. Coupled with the dark, cold winters and long, light summers, the Swedes were searching for an architecture that combined simplicity with beauty, humanism and democratic ideals, whilst connecting with nature. I come back to the roots of these beliefs time and time again as they are as valid today as back then. ese principles inform a way of life that I identify with and which I try to reflect in my architecture. is why I am always interested to understand how our clients live. Why is their home important to them? How does it want to make them feel? is is the root of inspiration to how we design and that is always our starting point. how Are you Able to trAnsform clients ‘ideAs’ into An ActuAl design? Having gained an understanding of how our clients' live we should have a really good understanding of what we are trying to create. We work by sketching and testing many ideas. Sometimes, the design response is very simple and obvious, sometimes we work and rework solutions many times. We don't see design as a linear process, instead we work at different scales, such as from the overall concept down to the minute detail at the same time. And, we always work in 3D - after all, we don't live in a two-dimensional plan. 3D helps to visualise and understand spatial relationships and will give you a far greater understanding of the project. ■

SplendiferouS i

9 2 march 2015

2015

n the middle of 2014, Splendiferous was approached by the Amethyst Ball Committee of the FOMG (Friends of Maltmans Green at Maltmans Green School in Gerrards Cross) to submit a proposal for managing what we are sure will be a sensational and dare we say, Splendiferous , sparkling ball. “We are extremely happy to have been chosen as the successful presenting caterer and in light of tough competition we are thrilled”, said Splendiferous’ Victoria Jarnefelt, Business Development Manager. “By the time we do the ball we will have been working with the committee for almost a year to ensure a successful and exciting event. We have a fantastic exciting menu and have even incorporated some new technology to ensure diners are treated to an exceptional menu thus tailored to todays modern palate. is event will certainly be bringing our talents to the floor, whereby we will be presenting a 5-course meal to 450 people on July 4th. We are keeping our fingers crossed for glorious weather.” Splendiferous has also been chosen by some of the County’s top Bride and Bride Grooms to be responsible, or not only planning their wedding from start to finish with our events planning department, but expanding our repertoire to the finest wedding breakfasts. One of upcoming weddings will be an all-Cornish theme whilst the other is a modern, take on French Bistro. We are also booked for a variety of “milestone” birthday events from now until mid summer. e Big Canapé & Bowl Food eme is still very much on trend and sees no sign of abating. Splendiferous was at the forefront of the canapé and bowl food parties and we are still going strong with more and more clients moving towards this more relaxed environment for their parties.

PersonaliTy Plus “I do love the process of creating an event for a client’s party or dinner,” says Claire Gallagher, creator and owner of Splendiferous, “however I find working directly with small to medium-sized groups is a truly collaborative experience that appeals to my personality.” “We have built remarkable relationships with local global multi-nationals who came to us through word-of-mouth,” she continues. “We have also facilitated team-building goals for local private and public sector groups, designing custom events with fun, communal atmospheres.” There are a number of different Splendiferous Team Builders that are well matched to most budgets and objectives. Importantly, all have elements of collaboration, competition and of course, consumption! For starters (!) there is a 1.5 hour canapé making session, and other modules have varying levels of cookery demonstrations, “ready-steady-cook” style competitions, menu planning and meal building, and lots and lots of eating! Each module can be enhanced with tasty add-ons - luxury hand-made canapés on arrival, artisan cheese boards, and champagne, fine wines or house wines. We can invite wine or cheese experts to enrich a given subject, organise group or individual transport (to ensure employees get home safely) or bring in professional photography to record the day’s events. Finally we offer recipe books or edible treats to take home. At Splendiferous, Team Building and Cookery Class preparation is creative, logistical and detailed- just like our catered events. And the overall experience for the group is always fun, social and rewarding. ■

Team-building and Tailor-made cookery classes Team Building and Cookery Classes are still one of the mainstay of Splendiferous. “Increasingly, groups are approaching us to tailor our ready-made cookery classes to their specific needs: various local businesses have held their Christmas functions in the Splendiferous Kitchen, beavering away on culinary delights. It’s a delicious alterative to the standard hotel or restaurant function.”

Made with love, Claire Gallagher

he month of March is upon us at last! With the anticipation of spring in the air this month features leeks, salsify, celeriac, spinach, kale, swede, black truffle, Jerusalem artichoke, wild nettles, and new season lamb will soon be with us. Shellfish is a great catch and it the best time to make good use of mussels, cockles, winkles as well as oysters for a wow factor. Our current Lunch Tasting Menu features a warming but light swede risotto so this month’s recipe is for a version with hand dived scallops from the Isle of Skye which are at their very best at the moment. e combination of the vanilla and scallop cut with the wonderful contrast of the sharp orange reduction whilst the cardamom gives a little warm spice to the dish. e roasted Jerusalem artichokes add texture and a nutty rich taste. ese unusual tuber vegetable (our namesake) which are related to the sun flower and grow well in our cold climate are high in iron and fructose as well as having great flavour.

The combination of the vanilla and scallop cut with the wonderful contrast of the sharp orange reduction whilst the cardamom gives a little warm spice to the dish.

Pan Fried isle oF skye scalloPs, roasted Jerusalem artichoke and Vanilla risotto with an orange & cardamom reduction ingredients

When the rice still has a little bite left, fold in your vanilla seeds, crème fraiche and whipped cream. Season to taste. Roast the cubes of Jerusalem Artichoke in a hot oven with a little olive oil, and seaso with salt and freshly ground pepper for 10 – 15 mins until roasted and golden. For the orange reduction, simply add all the ingredients into a small heavy bottomed pan & reduce until left with a thick syrup then strain.

Method Start by heating your chicken stock. In a large heavy bottomed pan sweat off your onions, shallot & garlic, add you rice and cook until rice starts to appear translucent at the edges, then add your white wine and reduce by 3/4. Next slowly add your hot stock stirring continuously gradually using the stock as each batch reduces into the rice.

Place a couple of large spoonfuls of your risotto onto each plate, pan fry your scallops in a very hot pan approx 1 minute on each side until golden brown (be careful not to overcook) Dab off the scallops with a piece of paper towel and place on top of your risotto, finish with a drizzle of the orange reduction.

Chefs tip Where possible buy diver caught scallops as they tend to be the largest with best flavour and less chance of broken shell.

The Artichoke is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. The Artichoke restaurant, 9 Market Square, Old Amersham | Tel: 01494 726611. www.artichokerestaurant.co.uk

et slightly back from the road at the top end of Beaconsfield old town’s high street sits Loch Fyne, Seafood and Grill Restaurant. e restaurant is one of 41 within the group, ranging as far as Bath, Newcastle, Poole and Edinburgh. You would be forgiven for stating your surprise on entering the building, as your eyes are drawn through the welcoming front area comprising of a bar and comfortable seating to the main restaurant, with the kitchen on full view at the end of the building. We experienced Loch Fyne, Beaconsfield on a Friday evening and the atmosphere was

warm and buzzing, it felt friendly and very welcoming. e restaurant is large, however friendly and welcoming. We were seated with a good view of the restaurant and given the a la carte menu along with the daily specials. e variety was good and eventually our choices were made. For starters, we ordered whole king prawns served with a Provençale sauce – from the specials menu and a haggis and seared Scottish scallop from the a la carte menu. Both were amazing and as they should, the scallops melted in the mouth. Following a perfectly timed break between the courses the mains arrived. e Loch Fyne fish stew was delightful with an array of salmon, prawns, cod, mussels and sea bass. is rustic dish was flavoursome and came with a side of granary bread. From the specials menu we chose fillet of hake with a choice of sauces whereby the method of cooking is chosen by the customer; grilled, panfried or steamed. A choice of vegetables accompanied the main, we chose the panfried samphire and sauted potatoes. After much deliberation the dessert menu was presented treacle tart and a chocolate fondant were well the order of the day. Portion sizes were perfect, although with a vast array of sides it would be extremely easy to over order! at is a good thing because everything we tried was heavenly. e restaurant caters for both groups and families. ere are options available to suit most pallets – either from the

Both men were oyster enthusiasts, and they began by growing oysters in the loch and selling them to restaurants all over the UK. ey then opened their own oyster bar in 1988, as the restaurant’s reputation grew tourists from all over the UK commented on how popular the concept would be ‘back home’. ■
