he Hawker Gallery in Old Amersham will celebrate Brian Bennett’s twenty first annual exhibition at the gallery in early November. Brian has become the best-known painter in oils of the Chilterns and over the years, the artist and the gallery have worked closely together to draw attention to the area’s natural beauty. In Brian’s words, “I count myself very fortunate in finding at e Hawker Gallery many years ago, Michael and Michele (Hawker) who share my ideas, commitment to our local landscape and who have done much to encourage me.” Born in Buckinghamshire and former Head of Art at Berkhamsted School, Brian has acquired an intimate knowledge of the local landscape, plants and wildlife of the Chilterns where they grow on the escarpment, in meadows or near water. He says, “I remember reading somewhere that the only real way of getting to grips and properly understanding the essence of a country is through one’s boots. I entirely believe in the truth of this and have spent much time stumbling across downs, through beech woods and along waterways carrying all my heavy equipment and putting the idea to the test. My underlying ambition is to paint a landscape that will convey not only my love of the Chilterns but also to create something really meaningful for the viewer.”

OCTOBER 2015

SEE BRIAN BENNETT’S COLLECTION OF CHILTERN LANDSCAPES : 3RD - 14TH NOVEMBER, TUESDAYS TO SATURDAYS 10AM – 5PM AT Brian has a very distinctive method of painting with a knife. His views from the escarpment over the Vale of Aylesbury have always been popular but painting on site can be difficult. In his book “A Painters Year” (now out of print) he says, “Like all landscape painters, I suffer desperately from wind. At the top of the Chiltern escarpment, a couple of hundred feet above the plain below, and facing into the strongly prevailing south westerlies is one of the best places I know for artistic masochism. Even when the easel is sunk firmly into the ground the vibrating canvas is eager to fly away, and my painting arm is far from steady.” A past President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Brian has won many awards for his work which is regularly shown in national exhibitions. ■

CHORLEYWOOD BOOKSHOP

W

hen anthropologists Kroeber and Kluckhohn asked ‘what is culture?’ in 1952, they compiled a list of no fewer than 164 definitions. e trouble with this question is its subjective nature: culture, arguably, doesn’t so much exist as is perceived to exist. As such, it can’t be firmly grasped. It is a fluid concept that flows between ideas, geographies and demographics. Some delineations sound somewhat judgemental – we hear of ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture suggesting a hierarchy of interest, passion and enjoyment. From music to artworks, this distinction makes itself known and it even appears – much to our chagrin – in the world of books. In our humble opinion, this rather misses the point. To us, a love of reading is our culture and books are our passion. is culture is one we shout from the rooftops (and our emails), and we take our passion everywhere we go: we head to libraries, spread it in schools, share it with our customers and give a little sprinkle of it whenever someone asks us what we do for a living. Over the decades we have discovered something: people love to come together to hear stories being told and knowledge being shared. ey love the chance to learn something new and share unique experiences with friends and family (and they also love the occasional

glasses of wine we serve up!). Our author evenings, which attract the brightest talent and most interesting minds, help us serve our purpose of sharing our unique brand of culture. All year round we have exciting events and this culminates in our annual Litfest, which is a whirlwind fortnight of events. From Melvyn Bragg to Nick Frost, Judith Kerr to Vince Cable, some of the biggest and most interesting names in the industry will be in Chorleywood to discuss their books and experiences. is year is even more special as it is our tenth anniversary, and we would be honoured to share it with you. Come on over to www.chilternbookshops.co.uk to find out more about why we love what we do quite so much and the amazing people we have coming (did I mention John Suchet?). We’d also love to meet you in person. Come and say hello in our shops in Chorleywood or Gerrards Cross, and take a little piece of our culture with you. ■

Q&A

Situated just outside of Gerrards Cross in the Village of Denham is the tucked away haven of tranquillity that is Buckinghamshire Golf Club. Recently we met up with Michael Connelly, Food and Beverage Manager, and he told us a little about the forthcoming festivities they have planned – not just for members but for all to enjoy.

MICHAEL TELL US WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU ? My goal is to constantly look to improve our offering to our guests. We have a fabulous BBQ facility, we have plans for a pizza oven, and our lovely lawn area is perfect for intimate music festivals and social gatherings, so watch this space. I also have plans to extend our weekend Japanese menu to a weeknight. It’s one of my favourite food choices! MICHEAL,TELL US ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS PLANS Buckinghamshire Golf Club will be decorated to a high standard to ensure the traditional feel of Christmas is encapsulated in every area of service, our aim this year is to help our customers keep the family ties and good friendships as solid as ever. We are kicking off the festive season with the ‘Spirit of Christmas Evening’ on the 5th December at 4pm. ere will be complimentary drinks and canapés, a visit from Santa and the local Choir, something for all the family. Our mansion is available for group bookings throughout December however if you would like to join up with other guests we have a party night on the 12th December, it is going to Rock! If you would like to enjoy Christmas lunch with your friends before the special day, come and join us on the 13th December for a Christmas Lunch ‘warm up’. AND FOR CHRISTMAS AND BOXING DAY? Our head chef, James Hatswell has designed the perfect menu for Christmas Day, it draws in all the traditional elements of what makes Christmas special. e atmosphere on Christmas Day is electric, there is this amazing buzz in the air with lots of laughter and cheers. e Boxing Day buffet is simply unmissable - who doesn't love a turkey sandwich? TELL US MORE ABOUT THE DINING FACILITIES Our Spike Bar menu and chefs special menu are available throughout the week for everyone – just let us know you are coming. Our Heron Restaurant opens for Sunday lunch and offers the finest scenery and comfort you can ask for. 1 2 OCTOBER 2015

A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND I started my career as a pot wash, and I still am happy to do the dishes if that is what the team needs doing. I can only be as good as my team around me so it is very important that communication is open across the board, I do my best to nurture my staff to help them to perform at their highest level. I have always been in food and beverage and events, I did my training and studied at e Royal Hotel in Ladysmith in South Africa. In the UK I worked alongside Simon Crawshaw (Sloan Club, Cannuaght) and learned a lot more about fine foods and immaculate taste sensations as well as menu design . I ran a six bedroom boutique country inn for three years before joining Buckinghamshire Golf Club. Come and join us on the 7th November 2015 for bonfire and fireworks night, you can join us on our lawn with Bucks Grill, or perhaps you'd like to try out some Japanese cuisine in the Heron Restaurant, get in touch quick as space is limited. We will also be hosting a Cider tasting dinner on the 31st October. For the first time we will also be hosting five holes of night golf on the 23rd October, which will finish off with mulled cider, a Japanese chicken curry and pickles. So if you would like to join in on our events or host your own I will be there with you every step to make sure your experience is exceptional. ■

HOLIDAY HOMES FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND We never board more than one family’s dogs at once, though some carers have a friendly dog of their own.

W

agging Tails HP, a new business launched in Buckinghamshire this year, offers dog owners a home-based alternative to kennels. Run by Simon Eccles with the help of his dog Benji, Wagging Tails gives dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. “We have people coming to us who say it’s such a relief to find us,” says Simon. “Sometimes they have felt for years that they could not leave their dog while they went on holiday, having used kennels in the past and not liking the experience. Now they can leave their dogs in a home environment, knowing they will get all the attention, walks, play time and cuddles that they deserve.” He is appointing a network of carefully chosen home carers. Like Simon they are all experienced current or former dog owners. ey are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. “We insist that owners and their dogs go along to meet

1 4 OCTOBER 2015

carers in advance of the stay, so they are confident that it’s a good place to leave them,” Simon explains. “We never board more than one family’s dogs at once, though some carers have a friendly dog of their own.” is year Simon and his wife Rosalind gave a new home to Benji, a beautiful, gentle and friendly black cocker spaniel, who was being rehomed by Chilterns Dog Rescue Society. “Benji comes with me to visit carers,” Simon says. “He’s a real member of our family and we’d never contemplate leaving him in kennels.” Many Wagging Tails carers describe the role as being like that of a grandparent - all the fun, then you get to give them back and look forward to the next visit! As well as the companionship of the dogs, carers receive a small daily payment. Wagging Tails was established in 2007 by Lisa Suswain, an experienced dog carer who originally set up a family-based dog boarding service near the south coast. ere are now 20 local branches of Wagging Tails, each covering a postcode area. Simon handles the HP postcode district, taking in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Hemel Hempstead, Amersham, Berkhamsted, Aylesbury, Tring, Princes Risborough and surrounding areas. ■

ABOUT ROALD DAHL'S MARVELLOUS CHILDREN'S CHARITY Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity helps seriously ill children and their families brave the unknown, so they can enjoy a more marvellous life together. Tens of thousands of seriously ill children in the UK have a rare or undiagnosed medical condition. Coping not just with the illness but also the unknown, puts immense strain on children and their families. e NHS often doesn’t know how to help or meet all their needs. Seriously ill children can be overlooked, and their families can feel lost and left to cope alone. Serious illness and treatment in hospital can be challenging and frightening for a child, while at home and school, daily life can be extremely difficult. ese remarkable, marvellous children have to put their brave face on. ■

FASHION

Find your dream coat It's likely to be your biggest splurge of the season, so wouldn't it be great to have lots of time to thoroughly peruse all the options before deciding on a winning winter coat?

S

adly, when it comes to this particular fashion feat, time isn't on your side, because the outerwear collections are dropping at a rate of knots, with the most popular pieces flying through the checkouts. î “ey won't be back in stock either, so if you want to be toasty AND on-trend when winter eventually rolls around, these are the coats, wraps and jackets to nab now... CREAM OF THE CROP Icy white at Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi; beige at Calvin Klein; magnolia at Celine - the designer outerwear colour wheel had a lot in common with the unadventurous paint choices of a first-time home buyer. But what these coats lacked in brightness, they more than made up for in style, with wide lapels, covered buttons, cocoon shapes and flashes of fur spelling out a timeless, ladylike vibe. Classic coats like these will last a lifetime - if you can manage to keep them clean.

3 2 OCTOBER 2015

MUST BE SUEDE Burberry is always a bellwether when it comes to coats and for AW15, Christopher Bailey's focus was firmly on suede, as he sent all manner of capes, wraps and trenches down the runway, many with a ton of tassels attached. A key component of the Seventies feel that's sticking around for autumn, a fuss-free brown suede jacket is a great canvas for woollen accessories. GREAT CAPES Structured retro capes are still around, but to tap into the Seventies renaissance, you'll want to wrap up with a woollen blanket. Not so much a coat as a gigantic scarf, these sizeable knits are perfect for throwing on over jeans and boots at the weekend, but for something a little more structured, consider looping a leather belt snugly around your waist.

p32-Bucks-Fashion.qxp__ 14/10/2015 14:54 Page 2

O-FUR THE TOP If you invested in a big, colourful Honey Monster number last year, the good news is it's still very much in vogue this winter. In fact, the fun fur trend has gone into overdrive, with rainbow brights and multicoloured patchwork coats, plus stoles and pom-pom bag charms added for good measure. PUFF PIECES Have a duvet day with a big quilted coat, as seen on the Moschino, Fendi and Hermes catwalks. But remember, fashion's take on the puffa jacket is a little more minimalist, so not just any old hiking jacket will do - sleek shapes come to the fore, while zips and buckles take a back seat. TRAD CAMPAIGN Houndstooth, tartan and tweed were all on heavy rotation in the AW15 collections - but not as we know them. Prints were blown up, hems were abbreviated and tradition was generally left behind. Tap into the heritage reboot by styling an oversized coat

in a country casual fabric over a short skirt and over-the-knee boots. GET THE LOOK It's a match made in sneaker heaven: Mary Katrantzou has emblazoned the classic Adidas Superstar 80s with her quirky badge print, as part of a collaboration with the sportswear brand. No wonder presenter and style blogger Ashley James (formerly of Made In Chelsea fame) has snapped up a pair. September is the month when all the major British fashion houses unveil their latest wares at London Fashion Week, but this year, another national institution is getting in on the action too. Greggs staged its first ever catwalk event, showcasing the brand's autumn/winter 'collection' of baked goods. e show culminated in a dress made out of Greggs paper bags and was called - wait for it - Pastiche. ■ OCTOBER 2015 3 3

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 Highlights A world of catwalks, celebrities, and fashion glitz

ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends. The world watches as fashion history is made. While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections, and it was one of the event’s biggest line-ups yet. So what does SS16 have in store for us, according to Britain’s most trend-setting brands? BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry’s Womenswear Spring/Summer 2016 show took place in its custom-built show venue in London’s Kensington Gardens. mixed with elements of regalia including metallic cording, crested buttons and handembroidered military motifs. English lace and floor length satin dresses were paired with leather biker jackets, and regimental tailoring with tie-dye tulle. The latest collection introduced the Burberry Rucksack in gabardine-constructed nylon and the Belt Bag in black English suede. In the latest chapter of the brand’s digital innovation story, Burberry followers were able to see a preview of the collection through the first ever Snapchat Show – looks from the collection were shared live as finishing touches were being made in Burberry’s headquarters in London – an industry, platform and brand first. Burberry’s show coverage on Snapchat also included a never-seen-before glimpse into the brand’s design studios, and featured a special appearance by Anna Wintour, receiving her invitation to the show, as well as live reactions on the red carpet from guests as they arrived. Burberry also revealed its make-up look the day before its runway debut, as part of the brand’s Snapchat activity. OCTOBER 2015 3 5

JULIEN MACDONALD

JULIEN MACDONALD For Spring Summer 2016, Julien Macdonald took us on a journey of recent travels through Bali. Inspired by the breathtaking natural beauty and artistic flare the show stopping collection of evening wear, red carpet gowns and body suits represents a stunning modern interpretation of the rich vibrant Balinese culture. Layers of metallic thread work overlaid with intricate beading, complimented in aqua, silver and navy blue create an exquisite subdued tropical aura. Motifs taken from jungle culture and modern artwork saw Macdonald’s access into print. Pattern using powerful injections of colour are projected upon the informing female silhouette creating the perfect pop art party dress. This direction saw the traditional Balinese culture turned upside down and into the rock and roll Macdonald chick as bustier cocktail dresses return. The season also sees the return of Macdonald’s signature shapes of varying lengths. Heavily embellished body suits, cut away cocktail dresses and floor sweeping gowns The finale look saw Macdonald return to bridal in the form of a jumpsuit created out of French lace, fine nude tulle and tones of beading. Not one to stick to tradition the finale emphasis modernity as the fundamental word of his collection. ISSA LONDON Issa presented Spring/ Summer 2016, by taking inspiration from repeating motifs in nature. The season’s graphic patterns are interpreted through fabrication and construction; the interlocking structure of broderie anglaise mimics the formation of organic cells, whilst lace jersey and knits feature graphic

and concentric textures. Embroidery gives the prints further depth, with white broderie anglaise coat, trousers and shorts over embroidered with metal hardware, beading and clear piping. Elsewhere the embroidery becomes integral to the garment’s construction; with an Aline V neck dress assembled from layered glossy enamel interlocking segments and a laser cut printed tile dress pieced together with geometric hardware. The brand’s signature draping is apparent on silk and devore jersey dresses, and fluid textured crepe knits, as well as shawl effect sleeves that drape across arms and backs. Sheer and lace panels create a focus on the body beneath the clothes; on a geometric metallic fil coupe jacquard knit dress and sheer panel tailoring. Wrapover shirts, dresses and jumpsuits with obi style beltingoffer a relaxed, feminine silhouette. HUNTER ORIGINAL Hunter Original celebrated its iconic connection with music festivals, with a spring/summer 2016 collection that took its inspiration from the muddy fields. The ripstop tent interior of the setting, complete with guy ropes, referenced the unmistakable landscape of the festival fields, and the looks themselves, drew on the spirit of the most epic festival experience. Hunter presented the ultimate festival journey, featuring the tools to survive whatever the climate throws at you. From the early highs of an unsoaked main stage, to the after-hours downpour where adventure begins. Lightweight nylon fabrics and Hunter sneakers were introduced, alongside waterproof rubber and vinyl jackets. Guy-rope fastenings on waxed cotton outerwear referenced the show set, while colourful tent fabric wrapped classic festival footwear. Technical performance soles were fixed onto soft suede uppers and bags were crafted with welded seams to offer the definitive weather-resistant accessory. Colours evoked hazy summer sunsets

– sun-bleached dégradés in sorbet and lilac, alongside dusty neutrals. Closing the show, the Original Clog, a new Hunter icon was launched. SOPHIA WEBSTER For Spring/Summer ‘16, Sophia Webster’s imagination goes underwater at the world’s most style conscious Mermaid Launderette. “CrazySexyNautiCool” immerses us in a world of oceanic prints, beach sunsets and dreamy iridescence. Following the journey from land to water, Sophia Webster’s sirens are influenced by hanging out poolside with David Hockney and watching the sunset. A Yoko Honda inspired colour palette gives a nod to bicoastal beach meccas Miami and Malibu in their heyday. Elements including nautical rope, Hokusai-esque wave artwork and beach ball beads adorn signature heel shapes and flat sandals. Once underwater, signature silhouettes are decorated in vibrant energetic prints on loan from tropical fish. Rich ocean life is referenced in an abundance of neon-hued coral made from laser cut leather, while chunky platform heels stand out with intricate stone beading to give the effect of the ocean bed. Iridescent lamé and soft pastel-coloured gems hint at dreamy mermaid influences including Daryl Hannah in the 80’s classic, Splash, while tie-dye thigh-high netted boots with intricate beading evoke Californian beach-babe styling. TOP SHOP UNIQUE Bringing together the saucy and the sweet - baby blue feminine frocks slashed almost to the hip, long jackets over short skirts - every ensemble on the Topshop catwalk had an element of what the French call ‘deshabille’. This undressed quality extended to coats belted, but falling off the shoulders, pyjama-esque two-piece sets, and tux jackets

and shirts so big they look borrowed from a City boy the morning after the night before. It was toned down with the addition of librarian tank knits and cardigans, and a smattering of bold spots. HOUSE OF HOLLAND “FEAR AND LOAFING” An army of Gonzo girls transfixed by the louche world of Vegas in the early 70s seen through the eyes and altered mind of Hunter S. Thompson. Paying homage to theallucinatory grotesques interiors of the 1998 cult film. Psychedelic, trippy and eccentric. Melting two-tone jacquard, patchwork leather, suede and hair-calf outerwear, tropical safari print separates in textured bark cloth and embellished “fly net” mesh lace. And a technology first: House of Holland has partnered with Visa Europe Collab to integrate payments into the catwalk showcase and offer a glimpse into what the future of fashion retail may hold. We can now look forward to the designer trends hitting the high streets for Spring/Summer 2016, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk. London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors. London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

“SOUTH BUCKS HOSPICE HELPED TO SAVE MY LIFE”

If you feel a bit down, this place keeps you on a level playing field. I look forward to coming here.

C

ancer patient Malcolm Flisher believes South Bucks Hospice helped to save his life after depression made him want to end it all. Malcolm, now 61, from Stokenchurch, was in the depths of despair after learning he had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “I had a real downer during my second course of chemotherapy, so much so that I wanted to try to do myself in,” he said. “I phoned my wife and said ‘that’s it, I won’t be back’ and drove myself off in my car. “I spent all day in my car sitting around in place where there was nobody else. I don’t know where I went, but it was about 100 miles away. It was like I was in a fog – it was really serious depression.” Malcolm’s wife called police who intercepted him as he drove back towards Stokenchurch and returned him to his home. “But I was still lost and we knew I had to do something,” he said. Malcolm contacted Macmillan Cancer Support and was given counselling by a nurse, who suggested he should go to a hospice, even though his condition was treatable. “I was a bit taken aback because a hospice to me at that time meant death and the end, and when I first came to South Bucks Hospice for a day a week, I thought I wouldn’t like it.” But Malcolm’s outlook was transformed as he began chatting with his fellow patients and making new friends who were able to empathise with his condition. “No one else can understand what you are going through,” he said. “I slowly began to realise that what I had wasn’t as bad as

4 0 OCTOBER 2015

what some of them had gone through. If you come here and feel down, there is always somebody here who has had a worse time.” Now four years on, the retired engineer is in remission and clear of the cancer, but still attends the Hospice twice a week. OUR AWARD OUR WINNING DENTIST

LET’S TALK ABOUT GOOD OLD PERIODONTAL DISEASE THIS MONTH !

P

eriodontal disease has been at the forefront of many programmes and publications. It is not only the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, it’s also been linked to heart disease, low infant birth rate, and a whole host of systemic conditions including diabetes. It has been estimated that three quarters of adults over age 35 have some degree of gum disease. Bacteria and debris in the gum area that are not removed by proper and regular flossing will cause inflammation and infection that can affect the body. A near painless condition, some of the early warning signs of gum disease are swollen and tender gums, bad breath, and gums that bleed when you floss. e good news is, you can halt and even reverse the disease with proper diagnosis and treatment. Some people are more susceptible to gum disease than others – lifestyle has a lot to do with it. Smoking is a big risk factor, and so is heredity and diet; foods high in sugar can make your teeth and gums vulnerable. Proper periodontal care may lead to an overall improvement in blood vessel function. In March of 2007, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a clinical trial showing that when severe periodontal disease is treated, a vast improvement has been noted in the arterial function after an average of six months. Studies have yet to conclude the reasoning behind this outcome. ough it seems to be the first time an actual link between the two has been brought to light, it is how maintaining this particular form of oral care can result in the lessening of heart attacks and strokes that are of great interest. Explanations behind this vary between how the inflammation, though beginning in the mouth, causes inflammation throughout the body affecting the vascular

walls, or how bacteria can spread through by the body via the bloodstream. TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM PERIODONTAL DISEASE YOU SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS IF YOU: • have bleeding gums, even if it is from flossing; • use tobacco products; • find your gums receding; • are pregnant; • or have had teeth extracted. If you exhibit one or more of these symptoms, you should contact a dental care professional. Heart disease affects us all, but it has established itself as the leading cause of death in women. e best prevention is regular dental care and thorough daily brushing and flossing. Use whatever kind of floss you like best but use it often! Even if you are cavity-free, don’t skip a dental recall. We screen for periodontal disease every time you visit our practice … before periodontal disease has a chance to attack your smile. ■

Dee McKenna How Men Can Benefit From Losing Weight

W

e all know that carrying around excess fat isn’t good for us, but there are a whole host of health benefits that come with weight loss. Here, we look at some key facts affecting men when it comes to their weight. • Men with a high intake of trans-fats (usually found in processed foods) have more than double the chance of getting prostate cancer. • The average man will gain half a stone per year by eating while watching the television. • The chance of you becoming more overweight is 60% higher if your best mate is overweight too, according to a study by the University of California. This is because people tend to mimic and compare themselves to close friends – sometimes without realising it. • When you lose weight, you reduce your risk of suffering from a stroke and developing cardiovascular disease decreases – as do your chances of suffering with asthma. • By losing weight, you’re giving your pancreas a lot less work to do than it did before. This reduces your risk of developing Type II diabetes to almost zero.

Losing weight isn’t just about how you look on the outside – it makes a big difference to what goes on inside as well. To find out how you could lose weight with LighterLife, contact dee.mckenna@lighterlifecounsellor.com 01494 444828/07793 393957 I’ve just started an 08.30-09.30 Sunday, Men only group, so whether you want a 4 week weight loss membership or longer you’re certainly going to feel and look more comfortable in your diner suit this Christmas.

TELOMERES

Are you confused about or under pressure to start a statin? The recommended threshold for starting medication has recently been revised with many more people being advised to start treatment. Some GPs have reservations about this as they have concerns about the side effects of statins. However, a new solution may be available testing telomeres. Dr. Peter Petrie from DOCTORnow explains more. WHAT ARE TELOMERES? Telomeres are an essential part of human cells that affect how our cells age. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each DNA strand that protect our chromosomes. Imagine your shoelaces. Without the plastic coating around the end of each lace they become frayed until they can no longer do their job properly. Similarly, without telomeres our DNA strands become damaged and our cells can’t do their job. e new test has been researched by two Nobel prize winners; to date there have been over 16,000 peer reviewed studies of telomeres. e findings report that telomeres give a good indication of your true biological age and therefore assess the impact of life factors upon your body. In the US telomeres are used as a guide to assess the need for statins. ey are a good indicator of how your heart is ageing and therefore the need to be proactive in terms of treatment. Telomeres are also used to assess how you are ageing more generally and therefore give a guideline for life 4 6 OCTOBER 2015

expectancy. e results come with a report on the impact of your diet, exercise, food supplements and response to stress on your life expectancy together with suggested improvements. With this knowledge, lifestyle changes can be made to reverse the effects on the telomeres and help to slow the ageing process. Perhaps you should persuade your loved one to check how they are ageing by having their telomeres checked for one of those important birthdays while they can still make major life changes. ■ For further information on the research and how to get this blood test please call us on 01494 410888

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

The importance of your designer B athroom design like most things has changed dramatically over the years. Long gone are the simple sanitised utility bathrooms of yesteryear and in are dramatic stylish statement rooms of luxury. The bathroom is the last place in the house where you can truly indulge yourself, relax, unwind and get away from the worries and troubles on the other side of that locked door.

It’s because of these everyday pressures and demands that our own space is becoming increasingly important. Which is why the design process has become so paramount. Good design can have a positive influence on how we live, we’re not talking about complete extravagance, simply the creation of something beautiful and functional that brings you and your family pleasure in your everyday life. What moves you is as personal and unique as the numerous designs we encounter on a daily basis. A good designer intends to make your environment personal and comfortable for you. The design process should be intentional and customised to your specific needs, your desired aesthetic, and the architectural integrity of your home. Good design makes a difference.

The first critical step in bathroom design is usually a process of good space planning. Start by making a list of your needs and wants for your bathroom, ask yourself simple questions and prioritise your desires. For instance; Do you want a free standing or enclosed unit bath? Do you even want a bath? Do you want a shower enclosure or a shower in the bath? What kind of shower enclosure do you want, doorless with a glass panel? What’s more important to you, storage or a large shower enclosure? And on and on...

Your designer can help with all of these answers and will certainly help guide the questions. But your desires are personal to you, so make sure you’re aware of what they are before meeting with your designer. TO HELP, HERE ARE SOME POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE DISCUSSING YOUR DREAM BATHROOM WITH A DESIGNER.

INDULGE YOURSELF, RELAX, AND GET AWAY FROM THE WORRIES AND TROUBLES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT LOCKED DOOR.

PERFECTION THROUGH DESIGN 5 4 OCTOBER 2015

europeanbathrooms.com

Shower, bath or both? Do you want a spa experience in the shower with body sprays and a rain-head shower or would you prefer a long luxurious deep soak? Light and ventilation. Where is the light coming from and what about ventilation, is it ok to open a window or would you rather a fan for those chilly months? Plan enough space for each fixture and function. For example, plan for a place to dry off when stepping out of the shower or bath. Is there enough wall space to hang towels within easy reach of the shower and bath? And consider using wall hanging toilets and basins to create a spacious and more hygenic look. Think through your daily routine. If you and your partner need to get ready in the morning at the same time, you might want separate basins with storage solutions. Consider cleaning and maintenance. What type of flooring and wall finishes are best for you? Some finishes look great but require more cleaning. Chances are you’ll make different choices for an ensuite than you might for a busy family bathroom.

Think about your luxuries. Do you want heated floors or towel warmers? Should your perfect bathroom have music or even a TV? Have you considered the benefits of a steam shower? This is your chance to make your dreams a reality.

KBS THE PERFECT FAMILY KITCHEN

weeks, with no major issues. Units were torn out, the flooring taken up, and a small wall knocked through to open up the space between the kitchen and the conservatory. “We were thrilled,” says Louise. “e kitchen runs through into a conservatory beautifully now, and it’s created even more of a family room that we had. It’s light, and stylish and we love being in here. We can’t thank Sue enough for turning a traumatic event into a hugely positive one.” ■

W

hen planning the kitchen of your dreams, most people like to do it at their leisure. Some will put together scrapbooks or mood boards, and others will scour magazines for ideas, before starting the process of gathering quotes. However, this wasn’t the case for Louise and Martin Adams. e discovery of long-established leaking water into their kitchen forced them into action, with precious little time to spare. “It’s when one of the floor tiles popped up that I first noticed,” says Louise. “en, on further investigation we saw the base of the units were raised too. It turned out that the washing machine had slowly been leaking for several months, and the units were actually flooded.” Without much time to plan, the couple began the search for a good kitchen company. ey visited several in the area, but eventually chose KBS as they ‘clicked’ with designer Sue, and loved her ideas above the others. Because of the lack of time, they left much of the planning to Sue, stipulating just three things – they wanted a larder cupboard, a hot tap and a wine rack. e rest was to be presented to them in the design stage. “Sue came up trumps,” says Louise. “We loved her suggestions, and she did really well to please both of us. I’m more of a traditionalist than Martin. When we put our previous kitchen in 12 years ago, most of it was down to me. is time, I had to let Martin’s preference for modern themes come through. But I absolutely love what Sue created for us.” KBS came in and the work was completed within 3

KITCHENS & BATHROOMS

Where Lakeside started In 1986 Tony and Marlene Clarke started in business. From humble beginnings in Ruislip, Middlesex to 3500 sq.ft. of showrooms in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, employing 10 staff. “It just grew naturally”, says Tony, being a Carpenter by trade and having extensive building knowledge he could see that some bathrooms/kitchens could be utilised much better if they did building alterations, “so we took on the whole thing and made some amazing spaces for people”.

Moving to Gerrards Cross Starting in one showroom in the Finlandia Centre, Oxford Road, in the year 2000 to eventually buying and extending the whole building to suit their needs. Lakeside were able to show quality products that they would be happy to install and put their name to, but still keep at affordable prices.

What they do Lakeside will supply goods but most of their work is installations, creating designs for individual lifestyles. They undertake building works as well as the Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom installations, which takes them to a different level to other installers. Tony has been in the building industry for over 40 years, doing total house refurbishments and extensions with his other company. Lakeside manufacture a lot of what they sell and install. They have a variety of bathroom vanity units, kitchens and wardrobes that can be designed and finished in any colour you wish. Lakeside specialise in wet floors and bespoke 10mm glass shower doors made to order and UV welded on site, many with unusual configurations. They also undertake wood panelling, again finished to your specification.

Lakeside Bathrooms Housing some of the top brands like Laufen, Kohler Artweger, Bette, Geberit, Aquaclean, Hansgrohe and being an Axor centre, to name only a few. Bespoke cabinetry manufactured by them. The showrooms show modern and traditional sanitary ware. Stunning showers and taps some with LED lights, with working displays, working steam room and wet floors on show for you to see how it could look in your home. With plumbing, plastering, electrical works, tiling all installed by their own qualified, employed staff.

THE LATEST IN GERMAN TECHNOLOGY from Moneyhill Interiors

by Celia Warbrick.

7 0 OCTOBER 2015

p70-Bucks-Moneyhill.qxp__ 12/10/2015 16:40 Page 2

O

ctober is always an exciting time in the kitchen calendar - all the major German kitchen manufacturers open their Factories and showcase their latest designs inhouse in various different locations. Whilst all the manufacturers are dependent on various manufacturing factors such as new veneers, and carcase materials, they are also desperate for the latest in technology for such boring components as hinges and soft close mechanisms that we just take for granted now. I simply love the new designs from Pronorm, combining the lacquers and laminates in subtle colours ( that you never grown tired of ) with stunning oak and white glass units. The use of pocket doors whilst not a new invention have become very sophisticated and glide with ease and the new interiors from Pronorm show just how easy it is to be totally organised in the kitchen. The versaltity of designing with a German range is also reflected in the price. It is possible to achieve the same design look and indeed colour using a door finished in a coloured laminate for a fraction of the price when using a high gloss lacquer. Concrete laminate doors for example are also proving that you can have texture and colour without blowing the budget. Although the kitchen has always been at the centre of family life, it has now also become the dining room, study and TV area all into one. The fact that all the food storage, prepping and cooking also takes place means that design needs to be simply tailored to individual needs. A couple with no children or animals have very different needs to a family with children. Its really lovely that so much can be stored away such as coffee machines, toasters and blenders, leaving clutter free worktops. It is also possible to hide away Ovens, Steam Ovens and Microwaves with specially

designed cupboards that bleep if machines are left on and the doors closed. Choosing A Theme For Your Kitchen

classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.

CONTEMPORARY KITCHENS

RETRO KITCHEN

The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.

FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.

SHAKER STYLE KITCHEN The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the

LAYOUT Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

CABINETS Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly

polished dark colours show fingerprints easily lyy,, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentallyy,, rarely work in small kitchens.Y You can always apply brighter colouurs to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effectiivve). Don’t negglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich aand Hefale haave a good selection with timeless clean lines es and if you’re feeling fflush, lush, V Valli alli & V Valli alli haavve handles to diee for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effectiivve and never dates.

WORKTO KTOPS Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slaaavve to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired t and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops thaat look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for thee seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it – sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the uubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For tap ps, the tri-fflo low system pro ovides vides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces.

Laminate is a g great, cost-effective ff option p that creates an authentic h c, reall wood d plank l k effect ff at a fraction of the cost of the h reall thing hi g.. LLA AMINAT ATE This is a great, cost-effectiivve option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thingg.. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that for m a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIY Yer er.

HARDWOOD A real hardwood ffloor loor is expensiivve, but will add value to your home. T Treat reat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the ffloor loor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t haavve to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again.

KITCHEN FLOORING

CERA RAMIC TILES

To put on a fantastic ffloor loor show, do your hom mework first. Start by looking at the constr uction of your eexisting floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of fflooring lo ooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re layin ng a ffloor loor ov over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, viinyl or wooden floorboards.

A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to for m. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underffloor heatingg..

VINYL FLOORING Comfortable and war m underfoot, vinyl is on ne of the most cost-effectiive flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that hat won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour r unning through ugh - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look o ovver time. Y Your our supplier can advise you on the corrrect grade for your kitchen and, if you haavve the budget, haavve it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel eel at the edges. T To o keep it looking pristine, sweep it reegularly and clean with a non-abrasiivve cleaner.

So you can create your own dream kitchen!

STONE ON OR SLA AT TE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor floor as its porous nature means it can stain easilyy. It’s also one of the most expensiivve ffloors loors you can buyy, but it will add value to your home. T To o reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you haavve it professionally sealed. Look at traavvertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you haavve kids and pets r unning around, natural stone may not be the best option p for you.

HOUSE & GARDEN

WARM, GLOWING AND BERRY WELCOMING

With the leaves turning and the countryside ablaze with fiery reds, burnt oranges and straw yellows, there couldn’t be a better time to spice up your space and introduce some warm accents and comfy chairs to ‘fall’ into.

E

ven a short ramble in the early autumn sunshine can inspire a shift in style. Cue a gorgeous array of furniture in rich hues and modern metallics, accented with splashes of rust and berries to capture the allure of the season’s richly-coloured foliage. DON’T BE A WALLFLOWER “Light and airy, adding gold to your hallway in the colder months creates a glowing halo that welcomes guests,” says Paula Taylor, colour and trend specialist at Graham & Brown. “A large-scale pattern elongates even the smallest of spaces, making it perfect for any sized home.” For an extra hint of luxury, pair golden accents on furnishings and subtle elements, such as metallic light fittings. Balancing light and shade will set the tone for when the clocks change, and you’re inviting friends and family in out of the darkness. COCOONED IN COMFORT Turning over a new leaf and making the living room warm and cosy is easier than you think, and doesn’t have to happen in one fell swoop. “Don’t be afraid of experimenting with colour. Start by introducing splashes with accessories and textiles that are easily changed if you change your mind,” advises John Sims-Hilditch, managing director at Neptune. “For the braver, choose one colour family and stick to it blues and greys are great together.” Indeed, one hero piece on the coffee table, such as a handcrafted woodland bird, scatter cushions on the sofa in tactile wool fabrics, or a wool throw, in a squash or pumpkin shade, strewn across an armchair, can make all the difference. Not to mention a sideboard styled with colourful decanters, set against a wall painted in a rich, russet shade, or a backdrop of floral printed curtains to add warmth. METAL ELEMENTS Inspired by modern metallics, the new tableware range from Oliver Bonas contrasts soft textures with splashes of bold colour and metallic finishes, to bring a touch of rough luxe to table settings. Pair this with a dresser or larder stacked with copper cookware, earthenware and wooden chopping 7 4 OCTOBER 2015

boards to add texture, and not only will it revamp your kitchen or dining area, but double up as a storage unit. BEDROOM BLISS “For an elegant and serene bedroom, try a palette of champagne, mink and taupe. Add layers of sumptuous bed linen, quilted and silk throws to create an inviting feel, while adding warmth, colour and texture,” says Kerry Nicholls, interior decor buyer at John Lewis. “Reflect the autumnal hues of the countryside with parquet flooring, and lay a warm, woody-toned rug for a little extra luxury and underfoot comfort.” After all, what could be nicer than stepping onto a throw rug and padding around on a smooth wooden floor? To warm things up, you can always style the room with a velvet chair in a sumptuous colour, invest in a luxury scented candle, or do something as basic as changing the wattage in your light bulbs to create a warm, yellowy glow. ■

THE TRUTH ABOUT

CONDENSATION

in UK Homes, & Whether or Not Replacement Double Glazing Eradicates it

Have you started noticing condensation on your double glazed windows? Double glazing condensation can occur the outside pane of glass or elsewhere on the window. Naturally this can be alarming, particularly if the windows or doors are new, but it is not necessarily something to be concerned about.

7 6 OCTOBER 2015

T

here are many factors causing condensation but double glazing will never eliminate it. For example, where new double glazed windows have replaced old single glazed windows such as old crittall windows or single glazed timber windows you may be surprised at the presence of condensation. After all, double glazing is supposed to eliminate condensation isn’t it? The presence of condensation may also be particularly evident in the Autumn. But why is this,

what is condensation and should your new aluminium double glazed windows even be allowing double glazed condensation in the first place? All windows will condensate in some way. You must never believe any double glazing salesperson that says “our windows will eliminate condensation”. This is untrue and completely misleading. New windows can never completely eliminate condensation. What new double glazing will do is improve the current

amount of moisture until they dry out completely. Consider how exposed to the elements the building was during its construction and until it was sealed by the roof or windows. Over 6000 litres of water are estimated to have been absorbed by a typical dwelling during its construction. Heaters are also a cause of moisture in the air. Breathing whilst we sleep is well known to produce several litres of water vapour during the night. Drying washing indoors are also significant sources of water. Single panes of glass found in old single glazed windows simply cannot retain any heat. As the glass has a lower temperature this lets moisture in the air condensate on the cold surface. This is why single glazed windows condensate. By comparison, double glazed windows offer two pieces of glass and therefore retain the heat inside the room. Old double glazed units were simply two pieces of glass with an air space. These still let out some heat but performed better than single glass. Modern double glazing with sophisticated glass coating technology, high specification sealants and spacer bars and the presence of argon gas between the two pieces of glass all substantially reduce the loss of heat from inside the room.

Single panes of glass found in old single glazed windows simply cannot retain any heat

level of condensation on your old windows. This is because the thermal properties of modern aluminium frames and the high specification of modern double or triple glazing will be far superior than single glazed windows and non-insulated frames. All the modern aspects of today’s windows play a part in reducing condensation but nothing can eliminate it. The presence of condensation is down to several factors, but the main ones are how we live in our homes and what we do that causes moisture in the air. Modern buildings are now very well insulated both in their construction and of course windows. In older buildings that are less well :MWMX insulated air flow changes are more frequent. In modern [[[ XMR]YVP GSQ buildings the water vapour that GSRHIRWEXMSR EHZMGI causes condensation is unable XS HS[RPSEH XLI to escape through old windows, FSSOPIX chimneys or the structure and has to settle on the first cold surface. This will often be the windows but Condensation can also be on bathroom tiles or walls. The bottom line is that water vapour is the cause of condensation It is modern life and the advances in construction products that all play a part in causing condensation in the home. Here are some common causes of double glazing condensation: Simple cooking and the steam generated from pots on the stove all generate water vapour. Therefore the presence of condensation is unavoidable in our dwellings, but there are of course steps you can take through adequate ventilation combined with sufficient heating to reduce it as much as possible. In fact, fitting thermally efficient double glazing can make an existing condensation problem worse if the room(s) in question do not have enough heating and ventilation to reduce the pre-existing propensity for condensation. There is always the possibility of some condensation forming on double glazed windows. Condensation on the outside of double glazed windows is nothing to worry about, as is condensation on the inside of the window (other than the latter is rather annoying as sometimes small water pools form on the window cill). However, if the area in between the two glass panes is misting up or showing signs of moisture then the sealed unit is failing and should be investigated to see if it has “blown” and therefore lost its thermal efficiency.. Condensation on the inside of your windows may be a sign that there is excessive moisture in the air, aside from the inconvenience of having condensation, you should consider what effect this could have on the plaster work and wood in your home. As previously stated, ensure that there is plenty of ventilation flowing through your home, as well as enough warmth from your heating system, and this will go a long way to reducing condensation. 8,) ()8%-07 8,) ()8%-07 8S JMRH SYX QSVI EFSYX XLIVQEPP] IJJMGMIRX IRIVK] WEZMRK VITPEGIQIRX HSYFPI KPE^MRK GSRXEGX XLI I\TIVXW EX ,E^PIQIVI ;MRHS[ 'SQTER] [LS LEZI SZIV ]IEVW´ I\TIVMIRGI QERYJEGXYVMRK ERH MRWXEPPMRK EPYQMRMYQ ERH 94:' HSYFPI KPE^MRK 'EPP SV ZMWMX www.hazlemere.co.uk

SHADES OF GREY Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

F

ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge.

FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your 8 6 OCTOBER 2015

home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.” SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

TIPS S FOR A GREAT T GARDEN N Nice gardens are very appea aling g. Man ny buyyers cite a thoughtfully designe designed ed and well-kept garden as a major m factor in their decision to buy a propertyy.

W

ith so many television programmes,, magazines and books devoted to gardening and nd outdoor design, house buyers are becomingg more ambitious and more discerning when en it comes to tracking down the garden of their dreams. Here are some hints for creating a perfect garden for your home. Choose a single theme or style. If you have acress of rolling grounds you can separate into diffferent areas, otherwise rwise you will need to pick one style and stick to that throughout. hout. It’s no good trying to create a harmonious and peaceful Zen en garden but then planting a riot of wildflowers in the middlee of it. Trying to mix a formal English-style garden with naturalistic ic parkland won’t work. Nothing spoils a perfect garden like a hodgepodge of styles. Consider your desires and your constraints in order der to fuel your creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention,, so think about what you need from your garden (a space to entertain? A place to grow fruit and vegetables? somewhere fo or children to play?) and come up with a creative solution. It’s possible p to create a formal-style garden but also be fairly self-sufficient. ufficient. If your garden sufffers from poor inner-city soil and d too much shade, be inventive. It’s possible to produce an English-style ish-style layout, but with decorative edibles rather than flowerr beds. Cut

back overhanging shade trees into neat borders and use raised beds to create an easy-to maintain, high-quality growing-ar -areas. It’s the perfect blend of desire meets constraints.

Plan yyour our spacee, and yyour our time carefullyy. A truly great garden is a well-planned garden... n... Draw out your garden in detail, making note of areass of shade and sun, damp and troublesome zones, areas of high traffic and sight lines. Use this plan to decide how you will use each part of the garden. Then decide what you’re goingg to plant and when. Diffferent plants have different growing seasons and if you plan your calendar well you’ll have a constant symphony ony of flowers, fruit or vegetables as one comes into season n as another dies back. You may have room for a swimming pool, or beautiful ul pond, so approach the experts in this case. Decide on the best garden furniture to suit your individual ividual needs, based on whether you have decking or a shelter ered space to entertain. With a little foresight and planning you can create a stylish and practical garden that will wow potential buyers.

FOOD IDEAS AND NEWS FROM THE ARTICHOKE

s

eptember closes with a flurry of long awaited late summer sunshine, but with chilly nights and the first few hints of frost the season now moves swiftly into autumn with shorter days. Let's not forget the sunny side of autumn, the harvest of great produce: beautifully coloured squashes, marrow and pumpkins are to be enjoyed now in abundance, and our newly created menus at the Artichoke feature the best of the season ingredients including juicy game - partridge and venison, as well as salsify, curly kale, brassica, celeriac and our namesake the Jerusalem artichoke. October sees the beginning of the quince season, which lasts until December and gives inspiration for a seasonal dessert on our new Autumn Lunch Tasting Menu, served pickled with a velvety honey set cream and Poire William sorbet. With the delight of the Autumn Harvest upon us it is a perfect time to make a warming soup. With the root

vegetables just coming into their own why not try our twist on a classical version of parsnip soup served with marinated raisins with a hint of curry and some toasted almonds to give a nutty rich finish. ■

rithsden Construction, established in 2006, evolved from the frustrating occurrences experienced by owners Anthony and Julie Hayes. Over a period of 10 years the local couple purchased various large properties needing refurbishment or extending, but often experienced problems with tradesmen letting them down, failing to complete the works to schedule, budget etc, etc. After several years of learning the hard way, Anthony, a business entrepreneur, and Julie, an interior designer saw the need to create ‘Frithsden Construction SW Ltd’. With a strong team behind them, consisting of experienced and creative architects, a good working relationship with local planners, knowledgeable contracts managers and all the necessary skilled trades and craftsmen needed to, they have gone on to build several outstanding new homes and refurbishments in Hertfordshire. Even managing to win the much coveted ‘Federation of master builder’s award’ for the Southern counties area, in just their second year of building! With a very strong ethos on creative designs, high standard of finish, and a complete understanding of the client’s and family’s needs in order to achieve their dream home. PROPERTY LIFE

BEACONSFIELD HOUSE PRICES BOOSTED BY TOP STATE SCHOOLS

A

According to research by Lloyds Bank parents who wish to secure a home close to the country's top performing state secondary schools face parting with almost £41,000 for the privilege. In 2015, house prices in the postal districts of the top 30 state schools in England were on average 13% higher than the neighbouring locations in their counties. e postal districts of six of the 30 top state schools command a house price premium of over £125,000 compared to their surrounding locations. Homes in the postal district of Beaconsfield High School have the largest premium with homes selling at £636,132 (86%) above the average house price in neighbouring areas (£342,166). Ashington Page recently saw a property in catchment for Butlers Court School and Beaconsfield High School increase in value by £35,000 (3.9%) in just 7 weeks, with multiple buyers with families in competition to secure the property. It would seem that this intense competition for school places is filtering into the rental market as well. Countrywide’s latest Quarterly Lettings Index shows that so far in 2015, 28% of properties rented across the UK within a kilometre of an OFSTED outstanding school were made to families, up from under 10% in 2008. e figure is even higher for outstanding secondary schools with a third of properties rented going to families with children. Over half of families with children in the private rented sector move during June, July, August or September in time for the forthcoming academic year. Households with children moving into the area close to an outstanding school don’t move far, an average of just half a mile. is confirms the fine margins involved getting into school catchment areas. As with house prices, tenants pay a premium to live close to a high performing school. In 2015 the average tenant living within a kilometre of a school rated outstanding paid 14% more than someone living more than a kilometre

away. While the premium attached to one and two bedroom flats is almost negligible, tenants living in three or four bedroom houses pay an average of 16% more. July and August have been unseasonably busy for Ashington Page Lettings and we have a high number of September/October move-ins. Looking ahead, we anticipate demand from families wishing to live within their preferred school catchment area before the January application deadline leading to more activity in the £1,500 to £2,000 price range in the final quarter of 2015. ■
