Welcome to our December issue. It seemed the whole of Epping turned out to greet Rod Stewart last month as he personally signed 500 copies of his autobiography ROD. Fans flew in from Scotland and Italy just to get a glimpse of the great man during the 90 minute book signing session. e queue went round a parade of shops as hundreds waited, some for as long as five hours, in dismal weather. Penny Lancaster accompanied her husband to the session and their eldest son Alistair joined the party later. When in England the family stay at their Epping mansion, part of the Copped Hall estate, and Penny regularly shops locally. e mood of the crowd kept buoyant as the military precision process of book signing got underway. Many had taken the opportunity to dress up as Rod Stewart lookalikes and his tartan army. ese included a group from the Rod Stewart Fan Club from Edinburgh and those who travelled the furthest were Mariella and Luca Tagliabue who flew in from Italy especially for the occasion. ey said "He's a sex symbol and his music is fantastic. We love him." – our very own Christine Baker reports.

Counting Down to Christmas, Chanukah and Cooking! WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS BEING AT HOME, COSY, AND GETTING READY FOR CHRISTMAS IS AN ANNUAL HIGHLIGHT.

D

espite the slick marketing which lures you into a whirlwind world of shopping, spending and festive celebrations, presents become increasingly difficult as most of us have everything we want/need. A creative alternative to the traditional theme of presents, would be a potentially new approach to gifts - making your own hamper/gift box! With the creative freedom to include whatever you would like, each hamper could be unique and geared to the lucky recipient. Possibly a varied selection of hampers: an afternoon tea hamper filled with your own baked cookies and shortbread. Or why not try something different and have a cocktail hamper complete with cocktail glasses and an unusual bottle of something elegant… A champagne filled box complete with champagne flutes and truffles plus a champagne recipe book. Or a goodie box with all sorts of exciting presents - jewellery making kits, gems, magazines/books all beautifully presented with cellophane, ribbons and bows for the jewellery enthusiast. e possibilities are endless… All you need is some sparkling imagination to make that unique and perfect gift which both shocks and awes. As for the cooking, this is the biggest annual list of the year! An endless amount of To Do Lists to make sure Christmas and the New Year celebrations appear effortless and routine. Even now is just a tad late for ensuring your Christmas cake has time to mature. Much later and you’ll be looking at Waitrose or Tesco’s Finest. I always add a generous ‘drop’ of whisky to enhance the flavour. Two drops is even better! Another tip is to soak the dried fruit overnight in fruit tea to both plump up and sweeten the fruit. Who’s coming? How many? Are there any special dietary requirements? All these things, considered well in advance, make it

12

DECEMBER2012

easier as the date looms… Presents, a few spare in case of whatever?! And I was amazed to see that even in September, Harrods had a Christmas department! e shops are certainly geared up to the commercial aspect of Christmas and how to make it even easier, for us to indulge ourselves and to spoil our family and friends. e amount of effort that it takes, to seemingly make a party look effortless – never fails to amaze. e harder you work – the easier it looks on the day. But it’s always worth it. For readers celebrating Chanukah - December 8th to 16th are the dates this year. A wonderful festival which celebrates the Maccabees overthrow of Antiochus’ forces in Jerusalem around 168 BCE. A menorah (from the Temple) was lit to celebrate but there was only sufficient oil for one day. Miraculously the ritual olive oil lasted eight days, so every year Jews remember this with prayers, songs, lighting of candles, playing with dreidels and the eating of fried foods. So whether latkes, doughnuts and other delicious culinary delights, saturated in calories – tuck in – sing Ma'oz Tzur and then schedule the fitness and diet regime thereafter! So whatever you’re celebrating – enjoy and have fun. Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah!

Epping Forest Organises Launch of CartoonClub FOR DISABLED CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

A

trip to the cinema is always a treat. Film, popcorn, the big screen and a room full of dynamic, acoustics and atmosphere. But what about disabled children and young people who would also enjoy a trip to the cinema, but for them, this would be too difficult for their families?

"Though specialist screenings happen at the big cinemas, having something local is a great idea as often taking the tube can be difficult." Parent of young disabled person. Epping Forest District Council and Waltham Abbey Town Council decided to pilot an exciting scheme: Epping Forest Cartoon Club. A club for disabled children and young people, to have the opportunity to experience cinema but without the restrictions. "This is a really nice idea, I hope people will support it as if successful it could become a monthly family outing and means we do not have to travel far.” e schedule includes a variety of short cartoons which can be enjoyed in a safe and unstructured environment. Relaxed and geared purely to fun, children and parents can join in or leave whenever is convenient and there are no time restrictions or constraints. In addition, there will also be a variety of mats, beanbags and other activities such as arts and crafts, which would convert the town hall into one giant living room for the children to relax and enjoy the cartoons. So whether focussed on a cartoon or looking for some

16

other activity, it’s easygoing and most importantly, the purpose is fun, in a safe and shared environment. ere is a great deal of excitement around this project and an enthusiastic feedback from local families and professionals for this latest enterprise. "Cinemas can often be to rigid and strict, this project will give attendees the opportunity to be free and experience the film from different angles." Local Carer "Having an experience like this for my child will be great as they will get to meet new people but also try something new with out me having to worry too much about rule and guidelines" Parent of young disabled person. Refreshments will be available but it is recommended to bring your own packed lunch. Wishing the scheme every success and hopefully that as many children as possible, will benefit from this inspirational initiative. Good Luck! e first Cartoon Club will take place: Date: 7 December Time: 4.15pm-5.30pm Venue: Waltham Abbey Town Hall, Highbridge Street, EN9 1DE For more information contact Fabrizio on Tel 01992 564567 fferrari@eppingforestdc.gov.uk n

NO.1 LOUGHTON SPONSORING A SUNSHINE COACH FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN (JULY/AUGUST 2012) is was a particularly successful feature. I was approached by Ashley Bermange for help to raise funds for a coach, which would facilitate school trips for special needs children. e feature was published this year and as a result, the school received thousands of pounds in anonymous donations and other support too. A further exciting development is an agreed sponsorship by Abridge Golf Club, for the school to be their chosen Charity of the Year for 2013. If you would be interested in supporting this worthwhile cause please contact Ashley: 07802 847 987 or contact Oak View School: 020 8508 4293 registered charity: 286830 www.oakviewschool.org

NO.2 WOODFORD SOUTH WOODFORD MOSQUE HELPS HAVEN HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE (NOVEMBER 2012) Haven House regularly features in the magazines. Wherever possible, we aim to help promote their events and any other fund-raising initiatives. NO.3 SOUTH WOODFORD MAKING SPECIAL DREAMS COME TRUE – SUPPORTING KIDS IN NEED (SEPTEMBER 2012) Wherever possible, I try to support charities, especially those involving children. Having been approached by a local member of the community, I wrote the Kids in Need feature. e charity supports children and young people aged from 3-19 with terminally ill diseases or multiple disabilities. e charity is supported purely through donations. NO.4 BUCKHURST HILL

SOUTH WOODFORD MOSQUE HELPS HAVEN HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE

BUCKHURST HILL TO BAFTA (NOVEMBER 2012) Despite the Essex jokes, what is very clear from the list of celebrities, business people and authors in the area, is that there is a phenomenal amount of talent. Until recently, I did not know that a recently received BAFTA adorned the mantelpiece of a home in Buckhurst Hill! James Lamont is an incredibly nice guy, very talented children’s writer and active participant in the community. It was a privilege to learn more about him and his awards.

NO.5 BRENTWOOD NEIL SIMON’S ‘PLAZA SUITE’ – IN BRENTWOOD (FEBRUARY 2012) Continuing the theme of Hollywood glitz in Essex from No. 4, are the Hutton Players in Brentwood. Going to London theatre is always a treat but to have access to some of the best plays ever written, again highlights what’s on offer in Essex. Neil Simon is one of my favourite playwrights and Brentwood is easily accessible and doesn’t merit a congestion charge! 18

NO.6 WOODFORD AN ENLIGHTENING INTERVIEW WITH DR. PAUL DOHERTY O.B.E. (FEBRUARY 2012) Many hours are spent reading newspapers and looking for stories online as part of the monthly research. However it is amazing just how many people within the remit of this magazine’s readership, significantly contribute both to the local community and in some instances, have an influence or interest from a worldwide audience. Dr. Paul Doherty OBE is one of those very special people. An outstanding crime writer, head teacher of a leading school (Trinity School) and a modest gentleman. Having the opportunity to meet such an outstanding figure in our community was a privilege; writing this feature was an honour.

NO.7 ESSEX FAMOUS AND NEW AUTHORS ARE ALL IN ESSEX THIS MONTH – THE ESSEX BOOK FESTIVAL (MARCH 2012) ere are so many famous writers from Essex and it was exciting to note their involvement at the famous Essex Book Festival. Bestselling Essex author and historian, Barbara Erskine, a patron of the Festival, presented her novel Time’s Legacy, a beautiful and haunting tale of dark forces and mysticism. Other Essex authors included Peter Jones, Guy Saville and Syd Moore.

NO.8 ESSEX CELEBRATING THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE IN ESSEX (April 2012) Standing in Valentine’s Park, watching e Queen in her turquoise suit and matching hat was an incredible sight. When royalty celebrates such a significant event as a Jubilee with the residents of Essex, is both historic and exciting.

NO.9 CHIGWELL PERFECTING THE ESSEX SMILE AND THE ONLY WAY IS ESSEX (JULY/AUGUST 2012) Ash Parmar continues to keep Essex on the map as far as smiles, whitened teeth and TV glitz is concerned. From his highly successful practice in Chigwell, his dental services are sought by the rich, famous and glamorous, whilst also accessible to us too.

NO.10 ESSEX AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CARL BELLE (APRIL 2012) As we get to know each other and especially being part of the local community, by developing friendships and business relationships, you understand what inspires people outside of their professional responsibility. For this particular interview, Carl Belle spoke about his work helping ex-offenders who have given up hope and how through his work and the Church, he is able to help and offer guidance and support. As a result of this feature, he was contacted by various people, some needing help, others who were in a position to also offer assistance and support. ank you to all the readers who have helped support these worthy charities, causes and campaigns n

LOCAL PROPERTY

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET THE RELUCTANT SELLER is will be the first time that I have been able to congratulate this smorgasbord of a Government of ours for displaying a stroke of genius. Albeit with a large part of my large tongue in cheek. Who was the bright spark who thought up the idea of appointing an elected Police and Crime commissioner? Maybe it’s my tendency to search for cynicism, but what a wonderful ploy in outsourcing the responsibility for the police to well meaning and well intentioned people, who for a measly salary of £65,000 to around £100,000 pa (the latter for being responsible for some 2.5 million of our population) have been passed the buck, and now carry the can for managing the budget of our understaffed and underpaid police force. I wish them luck and sincerely hope that I am completely wrong in anticipating that they will end up the whipping boy or girl should any catastrophe occur where they will carry full blame. I use this analogy to illustrate the similarity occurring within our local property market, which I call, “his and hers” syndrome of delegation. “She,” is getting bored with either the property, or worse still, her quality of life in general and wants to move on to larger, or more up to date accommodation. He, who is in reality only occupying the house for at the least 30% of the time compared to her, (and half of that being sound asleep) is quite content with the status quo. e last thing on his mind therefore, is to increase his level of debt and aggravation by packing up and moving on. erefore if only for a quiet

life, he delegates her the donkey work of trawling the websites and doing the rounds of the local agents to suss out the market, leaving her with the explicit instructions that “no matter what that devious smooth talking Estate Agent says I am not taking a penny less than XXX” (knowing full well, after first checking out the internet, the minimum price he has set is at least 20% above anything that is currently on the market and probably well above the highest price paid for a similar home at the top of the market in 2003 and 2007) I would imagine this scenario will ring quite a few bells for many households in our locality, for those reluctantly putting their former most important decision lower and lower on the list of priorities. I illustrated this in last months magazine where I promised to give further thought to the current lack of activity of our local property market (which I will inform you has now reached the sub £5 Million price range in Central London). In addressing this, I return to my previous plea to the former Housing Minister to bring back the two major

concessions which helped the residential property market get out of the recessions of the late 1960s and again in the early 1980s. Namely MIRAS, Mortgage Interest Relief at Source. is was introduced by the socialist Government of 1969 and re-engineered by the Tory Government of 1983 to provide at that time up to £30,000 p.a. tax relief to each unmarried couple sharing a home. Nigel Lawson ended the quite unfair perk of double MIRAS and in doing so, caused the bubble to burst in 1990. MIRAS was in my view stupidly abolished in 2000 by Gordon Brown (Who else?) If this were reintroduced

now, albeit with conditions attached regarding a maximum cap on relief, and who would qualify, it would help enormously. is, together with a mortgage guarantee policy, which for a relatively small single premium, insures any advance exceeding 80% of the purchase price or valuation. is would encourage higher levels of lending and thereby provide the mobility missing from today’s market. is neatly brings me back to the subject of delegation and out sourcing, as it transfers the risk onto the insurance policy removing it from the lender and the borrower. Believe me this is not Rocket Science and I have been hammering away at it for well over 3 years now with no effect. Should anyone out there happen to have the ear of the Government please have a word for me! For those of you anxious to learn what’s been happening over the past year please refer to my blogs on our website for 2010 and 2011 – nothing has changed. For those looking to me for a forecast for 2013 – Forget it! – Nothing will change. Unless of course the slim chance of the government acting on my recommendations which although not recommended as a total panacea will possibly help, and certainly won’t harm. The Charity I Support WORDS: ASH PARMAR

VILLAGE LIFE

I

n 2006, I went on a special trip to India with my parents. is was a visit, which I had planned and dreamed of for a long time. We went to a town called Vrindavan, which is about 2-½ hours drive by car from Delhi. One of our objectives as a family was to do some charity. But the problem was that we did not know where to donate our money. We were staying at a guesthouse and one day we enquired if there was a school locally where we could take a large bag of pens that we had brought from England. A phone call was made and within 10 minutes we were at a school, thanks to the customary bumpy ride on a rickshaw. We were given a tour of the Sandipani Muni School in Vrindavan, and one of the first rooms we saw were the kindergarten classes. ese had young children innocently sat on the floor on a mat patiently waiting for their morning cookie and a glass of milk. I distinctly remember that my father and I both had tears in our eyes. I also had a warm and powerful emotional feeling within my heart – one of the few truly special moments I will have in my life. Our

24

DECEMBER2012

family had finally discovered the bona fide, worthwhile charity we were going to support… Over the next week we spent three full days at the two schools. ese schools are part of the registered charity called Food For Life Vrindavan (FFLV), which is run by an Italian person called Rupa Ragunath. He is one of the most humble, passionate and driven individuals I have met. From a small class in 2002 helping a group of 30 young, poor and hungry children from the slums and local villages, the schools now look after over 1300 children! e charity has also made much progress in other areas – built water wells in many villages, a hospital, an organic farm, a care facility for sick and injured cows, planting of trees and cleaning Vrindavan, and tackling the social issues of neglect regarding women and girls. e main problem with the poverty cycle is that the parents (or often the single mother if the father has died or left the family), have to work hard to earn a few rupees to put some food on the plates. It is common to have families with 5-6 children, and girls are looked down upon. e parents cannot afford to send the children

local life

to schools and the oldest girls (e.g. 9-10 years old) have to do all the work at home and look after their younger siblings whilst mum is working during the day. Because of this helpless situation, generations of families have NOT progressed with life. However, the remarkable work of Rupa has meant that children who are the poorest of the poor are transformed from being rough diamonds into polished jewels. e children arrive in the morning at 8.30am by either walking, or in rickshaws that the school have, or via the bull carts. ey then have a simple breakfast such as fruit and water, or milk and a nourishing snack. ey are also given vitamins and nutritional supplements. After morning classes, lunch is served in the courtyard by the older children. All the vegetables are grown in the organic farm that belongs to the charity, which keeps the costs down. e children then have their afternoon classes. ey have a full programme of learning which includes English, Maths, computer classes, martial arts, PE, art, embroidery, etc. After school at 5.00 pm, something very special happens – kichri distribution. Kichri is a nutritious rice and vegetable based dish that is made and served to about 300-400 people everyday. ese are poor children who have not been lucky enough to get a place in the schools. e food is served on a plate made of banana leaves, and seeing the smile and appreciation on the childrens’ faces as you personally serve them the kichri is emotionally very fulfilling. What we must remember is that for many of these children, this will be their only meal for the day. We have been fortunate to sponsor two children as a family since 2006. It has been great to follow the progress of Krishna and Sheetal (brother and sister) over the years. FAMILY VISIT IN OCTOBER 2012 In October 2012, I was fortunate to take my wife Jyoti and our two children Roshni (aged 10) and Krishan (aged 7) to Vrindavan. is was the first time they would have the “Vrindavan Experience”, which they had only heard about. One of the most important lessons I wanted for our two children was gratitude.

BULL CART

ASH SERVING POOR CHILDREN

Some of the special highlights of the trip were: l Our children helping teach classes l Kichri distribution each day l Visiting the villages to see where the children live after school l A magical three-hour performance by the children to celebrate a festival l Visiting famous temples and religious sites in Vrindavan, as well as the Taj Mahal. SATISFIED CHILDREN EATING KICHRI

SUMMARY Contribution and changing the lives of others is an important goal we need to aspire to as human beings. We should recognize how fortunate we are and be grateful for all that we have. Charity does not just mean giving money. Sometimes, actually taking part, helping out and personally visiting the place is more important – it is time that is our most precious commodity. e main reasons I wholeheartedly support FFLV as a charity are: l About 92% of all donated money actually goes to the worthy causes (Rupa is very committed to keep the charity expenses to an absolute minimum) l My three trips to Vrindavan so far and seeing the actual results of what donated money has achieved Visit www.fflvrindavan.org, or email Ash (ash@smiledesignbyash.co.uk) to find out more n

MARIELLA & LUCA TAGLIABUE FROM ITALY

ROD STEWART'S TARTAN ARMY FROM EDINBURGH

I

t seemed the whole of Epping turned out to greet Rod Stewart last month as he personally signed 500 copies of his autobiography ROD. We love him." CROWDS GATHERED First in the queue at 6.00am were Angela and Derek Scott, from Newcastle, who stayed overnight in Epping. "I've been a fan for 30 years" said Derek "ere's no-one better than him. He's a legend. He puts a lot of passion into his songs and writes his own music." Standing alongside Angela and Derek were Lesley and Nigel Moore, from Southend, who would never have met had it not been for Rod! ey met on their way to a Rod Stewart concert at Earls Court in London in 1983 and married two years later. Nigel already has a football signed by the star which he kicked into the audience at a concert. "I've waited 41 years," he said. His wife could not believe she was going to get up close to the legend. "I think I'm going to be speechless" she said. THE EARLY YEARS Roderick David "Rod" Stewart, CBE, was born on in January 1945 at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London, the youngest of the five children of Robert Stewart and Elsie Gilbart. His father

was Scottish and had been a master builder in Leith, Edinburgh, while Elsie was English and had grown up in Upper Holloway in North London. Married in 1928, the couple had two sons and two daughters while living in Scotland, and then they moved to Highgate. Stewart came after an eight-year gap following his youngest sibling; he was born at home during World War II. e family was working class and by all accounts Stewart was a spoiled child as the youngest. Despite some early close shaves with a number of diverse career paths ranging from grave digging to professional football, it was music that truly captivated his heart. With his distinctive raspy singing voice he never looked back. MUSIC LEGEND Stewart has sold over 100 million records worldwide making him one of the best selling artists of all time. In the UK he has had six consecutive number one albums and his tally of 62 hit singles include 31 that reached the top 10 and six gained the number one position. He has been equally successful in the US and, as a solo artist, Stewart was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and was inducted a second time into the US Hall of Fame, as a member of the group Faces, in April 2012. Stewart was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 2007 New Year Honours list for services to music. His book recalls his music career and his not-so-private life – his marriages, divorces and affairs with some of the world’s most beautiful women, and a brush with cancer which very nearly saw it all slip away. Rod has lived an incredible life and, for the first time, his autobiography tells it all. Following his sell out 2010 tour, Rod Stewart takes to the stage for his ‘Live e Life’ tour in June 2013. One of the world’s best selling musical artists he will play arenas across the country including Nottingham, London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Sheffield. Don't even think about pulling out your trusty LBD this party season. ere's far too much in the way of decadence, glitz and sparkle adorning the rails to resist. Even the traditional party dress is vying for attention with jaw-dropping maxi gowns, statement suiting and even dress coats that work for dancefloor and outdoors. is season, partywear is made for anti-wallflowers so don't go for half measures. "Every woman needs the 'wowzer' dress," says Marios Schwab, Edition designer at Debenhams. "It's not about trends. It's about what looks interesting and at the same time makes her feel totally gorgeous." Whether you want to rock some baroque, go mad for metallics or indulge in sequin overdose, 'tis the season to be outrageously OTT. BAROQUE 'N' ROLL Stand aside minimalists, excess and exuberance are this season's buzz words. Return to an era of opulent luxury with Baroque period-inspired pieces that flaunt intricate embroidery, ornate brocade and gilded embellishment. A lustrous black and gold colourway dominates the Baroque trend making this the ideal update for those who can't give up their LBD habit. If you want to opt for colour, think flocked fabrics and damask prints in rich jewel tones. e plusher the backdrop the better, so look for crushed velvet or glamorous satin. is is one trend where over-accessorising is perfectly acceptable so team with regal bling and a statement bag. METALLIC MEDLEY Gold, silver, or bronze; now's the time to really celebrate Team GB's medal tally with your favourite metal. Metallics are the most decadent party colour palette. Because the material is high-gloss, keep the silhouette clean and sleek to really outshine the competition. Look for sultry matte metallics if you want a sophisticated, grown-up feel. Separates are having a moment right now, so seek out a dress coat in pewter or gold that doubles up as both a cover-up and a dress when done up. Metallic cropped trousers will also look red hot teamed with pointy toe heels for their leg lengthening powers. WWW.COAST-STORES.COM

Shiny or matte, leather is a surprise hit in metallic tones if you're looking for a rock chick edge with a hint of bling. SPARKLE SAMBA Give the festive disco balls some competition in sequins. Don't look to the Strictly Come Dancing contestants for inspiration; this look is more glitterati than glitzy. Guarantee yourself a sparkling entrance in a floor sweeping sequin gown. Choose a darker colour like black, gunmetal or deep purple for a more flattering look as sequins can add bulk to your frame. To achieve a tinsel effect, try super-sizing your sequins. Focus on separates like a top or skirt if you want to shimmer with subtlety. Low-key not in your vocabulary? Look for a dress with bold circular paillettes (spangles) in a bright gem colour to really make a statement. Swap sequins for intricate shimmering beading to channel Gatsby glamour. ink Twenties chic with a flapper dress that will swing as you show off your Charleston.

LACE LAMBADA As the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton has proved so often, lace is a classic fabric for evening chic. But if you want to move away from super-safe black, inject a sprinkle of Christmas magic with festive reds, golds and sapphire blues. Contrasting materials and fabrics like flirty feathers will ensure you look dancefloor-ready. Also look to necklines and sleeves with eye-catching embellished details for lace with the festive trimmings. is season, the matchy-matchy trouser suit is the anti-leg baring answer to party frocks. Look for a lace or lace print two-piece for an edgy take on Christmas outfit traditions. Killer heels are the essential accessory if you're taking on this glam tux look.

GET INTO MISTLETOE MODE LIPS ARE THE INSTANT WAY TO LOOK PARTY-READY. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO WORK A STATEMENT POUT. BY LISA HAYNES NATURAL BEAUTIES LOOK AWAY NOW, THE SEASON OF EXCESS IS UPON US. But if you prefer to leave the glitter and sparkle for the Christmas tree, then look to lipstick for a festive beauty boost. "Lipstick provides an easy way to change your look, taking you from girl-next-door to sexy siren with just a swipe of colour," says Jemma Kidd, make-up artist and author of Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets. "It's an instant pick-me-up." Prime your pout for mistletoe kisses with irresistible statement lips. WEARING IT WELL e power of your pout should never be underestimated it's the main focus when we talk, laugh, drink and kiss, making lips a prime candidate for a party makeover. "A fully made-up mouth can be the finishing touch to your look, and some women feel naked without their signature lipstick," Kidd says. "It is probably the safest way to go bold. e rest of the face must be flawless, with minimal make-up in neutral tones so that the statement colour really stands out and you don't look overly made-up." Take your lip size and shape into consideration when you're choosing textures and colours. Satin-finish lipsticks are flattering for most due to their creamy coverage and slight glossy finish. "Matte colour can make a bold statement that looks stunning on fuller mouths, especially in classic Hollywood starlet red, but be careful if you are older, or if you have small/thin lips as matte finishes can look harsh and ageing," Kidd warns.

42

DECEMBER2012

CREATIVE COLOUR Unless you're working a strong eye, give the nude tones a wide birth if you want your lips to be the star attraction this Christmas. "For the most wearable brights on the mouth, go for red, pink, purple or orange," Kidd advises. If you have porcelain skin, stick to cool pinks and blue-toned reds. ose with olive complexions should opt for berry or plum tones, oranges and warm, orange-toned reds. If you have dark skin, Kidd recommends experimenting with rich browns, strong oranges and deep plums. When trawling the lipstick stands in search of your perfect pout match, avoid testing on the back of your hand. Kidd explains: "If you can, try a lipstick on your lips to test the true colour (use a cotton bud to apply), or try on your fingertip, which is closer in colour to your lips because of the concentration of blood vessels there." LIP LONGEVITY All that prosecco supping and mistletoe pecking calls for extra staying power during the party season. With the right preparation, you can make your lipstick last longer. "Use a lip primer, or a dab of foundation or concealer," Kidd reveals. "After outlining your lips, apply lip liner over the whole surface to provide a smooth, even undercoat of colour and a waxy base for the lipstick to adhere to." It's winter, so think layering. One coat of lippy isn't sufficient so apply your lipstick once, blot with

MM__ 28/11/2012 11:31 Page 2

&

HEALTH BEAUTY

a tissue and then layer on another coat. If it feels too bold, blot with your finger for a pressed-in stain effect. Kidd recommends a light dusting of translucent powder or blusher patted on top of the lipstick for a matte finish and extra staying power. Pigment-packed lipsticks can be drying on the lips, especially long-lasting formulas. Use a lip balm under your lipstick to avoid the dreaded cracked look. POUT PERFECTION If you're ready to take the pout plunge, Jemma Kidd has these golden lipstick rules: n Dark colours are generally harder to wear than paler shades. ey can be more draining and ageing, and you also need to be more accurate in your application as any slips will be obvious. n Bright lipsticks will be more flattering if you have a small mouth or thin lips. n When you are wearing a dramatic, bold lipstick, keep the rest of your make-up minimal. n If you buy a shade that turns out to be too dark or bright, blend it with another lipstick or gloss to achieve a bespoke colour that suits you perfectly. n Oily lipsticks, liquid glosses and stains tend to migrate beyond the lip line, so choose thicker, drier and less greasy formulas if 'bleeding' is an issue.

n To achieve the illusion of bigger lips, use a lip liner in a colour that matches your lipstick and outline your lips just a fraction outside your natural lip line. TRIED & TESTED Lauren Taylor tames her mane with a DIY blow-dry masterclass. Like a lot of women, my hair just won't do what I tell it to. If only there was a way to recreate that just-left-the-salon feeling at home... Now Saks are offering a blow-dry menu with the chance to learn techniques you can reuse at home, and I went to watch Saks's creative director Alison Dace demonstrate four different blow-dry techniques. First, the 'Tjuz It' tousled look was created by blow-drying the roots with a rounded brush. Using a only a splattering of mousse, the stylist worked the roots to give lift and volume. A backcombing technique was demonstrated to make sure it looks subtle and sophisticated, by not taking the comb all the way through the hair so the top layer is left straight. Next there was the 'Wrap It' technique - the stylist dries the hair flat and downwards against the scalp, using the shape of the head to wrap the hair around. Another technique was the simple, straight 'Polish It' look, and the final masterpiece was a Kate Middleton-esque 'Bounce It' style; loose curls achieved with a large barrel curling tong. e masterclass was a helpful insight into new things to try with my tresses. It's a great idea to get your stylist to talk through their techniques step-by-step - I recorded my favourite look with my smartphone. When it comes to blow-drying like a professional, a lot of it comes down to investing in a good big round brush, mousse - and lots of practice in front of the mirror. n A Saks blow-dry starts from £22. BACK PAIN SCIATICA? NEW UK TREATMENT COULD HELP AVOID SURGERY & INJECTIONS

C

higwell Osteopathy & Physio Practice is one of 8 UK clinics, including e Harley Street Spine Clinic, offering a ground breaking new treatment from America for trapped nerves, chronic back and neck pain and sciatica. Although around 800 clinics offer IDD Spinal Decompression erapy worldwide, IDD has only been available in the UK for the past 4 years. IDD works on the neck and lower back using advanced computer technology to target then gently and rhythmically distract very specific segments of the spine. is creates a vacuum effect to decompress the damaged disc, reduce disc bulging and improve mobility in stiff ligaments and spinal joints over a 6 – 8 week course of treatments. Patients are treated fully clothed without any invasive procedures, they just lie back, relax and let the machine do all the work. Medical trials show success rates of over 80%. PETER’S STORY ”…I had been suffering with a bad back for 6 years, this was making my work as a builder nearly impossible. MRI scans showed I had a degenerative disc at the L23 level of my spine. When my back was really bad it would also cause pain in my thigh and groin area! Over the years I spent over £4000 on various treatments including physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy and others, all without any real improvement! e doctors just told me I would have to live with it and that there was nothing that could be done. All they offered me was pain killers and anti-inflammatories which eventually gave me a stomach ulcer!! I kept thinking to myself – if they can put a man on the moon, surely they can cure my back pain! I found out about Spinal Decompression erapy on the web and had planned to go and stay in America for a month or two in order to have the treatment there. en my wife came across the SPINE PLUS website. I saw that they had two clinics with IDD Spinal Decompression machines, one near Harley Street and one in Chigwell. I had an initial consultation with co-founding director of Spine Plus Clinics Robert Shanks. Robert examined me thoroughly and reviewed my MRI scans, I could instantly tell he new what he was talking about. Robert explained to me that my sort of problem was notoriously difficult to treat with manual therapy and exercises alone and that surgeons were usually very reluctant to intervene with my sort of condition unless the patient had crippling sciatica. Robert was very sympathetic to me having been left in limbo and explained the that reason why he had

become interested in IDD erapy was in order to help patients like me. Robert told me I fitted the criteria for IDD and that he anticipated a good outcome but also that if IDD were not able to help me he would be able to put me in touch with colleagues of his who might be able to offer other options such as minimally invasive spinal surgery or special image-guided spinal injections. ankfully it didn’t come to that, now after the standard six week, 20 session IDD course my back and groin pain have gone for the first time in 6 years and I am off ALL my pain killers and anti-inflammatories. I can’t stop recommending IDD erapy to people!!” To book a consultation to find out if IDD THERAPY COULD HELP YOU please call the Practice on 0208 501 0937. isa Broughton is very proud of her straight white teeth as a result of her Six Months Smile treatment with Smile Design by Ash. “I had braces for two years as a teenager” said Lisa “but at 18, when I stopped wearing the retainer, they all slipped back and I had the same gaps as before. I was fed up and gave up.” Fast forward 10 years and Lisa, aged 29, is married to Stephen and has a young son Sydney. Why now? Lisa says “I never stopped thinking about it. en I was reading about Ash in these titles as I live nearby and thought why not find out more? I thought maybe now I can have the smile I wanted when I was younger.”

LISA BEFORE TREATMENT

Plus stay at home Lisa was on the brink of a new career in personal training and needed the extra confidence she knew her new smile would bring while working closely with her clients. e revolutionary 6 Month Smiles system achieves straight teeth much faster. Gone are the days when it took two years or more of pain and discomfort wearing braces without always achieving the end result. No traditional train track metal braces either because tooth coloured wires and clear brackets are used to gently straighten and align teeth smoothly – just like magic! When Lisa met Ash and his team she was confident about going ahead with the procedure. “I knew this was the right route for me and my teeth. Everything about Ash and his team was reassuring plus the braces were transparent and tooth coloured so I quickly forgot about them. I visited the practice about once a

month and my teeth moved really quickly.” Accelerated treatment doesn’t mean simply “tightening” regular braces to get the teeth moving. 6 Month Smiles braces use low force to move teeth more comfortably. is new procedure utilises standard orthodontic mechanics with an emphasis on the cosmetic appearance of teeth. At the end of the process Lisa opted to have a fixed retainer bonded to the inner surfaces of her teeth to keep everything in place. By June this year, after seven months, some teeth contouring and whitening, Lisa’s new smile was complete. “I cried I was so thrilled” said Lisa “I have the smile I always wanted and I get to keep my own teeth.” Lisa’s new business has a bright future too. After completing intensive training courses, challenging coursework and earning her qualifications Lisa’s mobile personal training business is up and running www.bodyperfectessex.com. Lisa offers flexible training within the home, workplace or outdoor spaces and it’s suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Lisa says “I can’t believe how much my confidence has grown and this new smile has given my life a great boost just at the right time. I am a great fan of the practice now. I visit Jyoti for dental health, Jessica for hygiene and bring Sydney for his regular checks. He loves it there too.” Ash and Jyoti are both certified and trained 6 Month Smiles dentists. At the very core of Apple and imbedded in its DNA was the late Steve Jobs desire to make sure things just work. It seems strange that for so long so many of us blindly accepted poor design, inferior production methods and damn right obtuse interfaces that drove many of us to despair.

When it comes to identifying that ‘must have’ product which will top Christmas lists everywhere, the iPad or iPad mini easily earns the top spot. If you were thinking there might be a worthy competitor from an alternative electronic manufacturer then think again. Lets be honest, no-one wants to see their child cry on Christmas morning.

I am of course biased, and have a vested interest in Apple. Still, the truth is universal, and it is universally acknowledged that the Apple iPad is best. It doesn’t matter whether you are buying something for a 5 year old or a 75 year old; the iPad spans generations in a way no previous electronic device ever has. Of course you will still need to decide which iPad or iPad mini to buy and prices range from £399 - £699 for the iPad and £269 – £529 for the iPad mini. You can choose between Wi-Fi only, where you must download content at home (or via a Wi-Fi hot spot) but can play anywhere. Alternative Wi-Fi/Cellular models allow you to download content on-the-go using a mobile data network connection (3,V Vodafone, O2 or o EE) and this obviously costs money. I’d be cautious of signing long term contracts that tie you in for up to 24 months and which does not include using your iPad abroad without incurring extravagant ‘roaming’ charges. The good news is that the iPad can be used with a 50

If this all sounds confusing, that’s because it is. There are subtle diffferences ac ferences across the iPad and iPad mini range spanning 24 models in total. Priced at £249 - £329 the iPod touch really belies its price and I just can’t think of anything else that is so good for anywhere near the same price. IF YOU THOUGHT DRESSING THE CHRISTMAS TREE WAS JUST A RUN-OF-THE-MILL SEASONAL RITUAL, THINK AGAIN - THERE'S A HOST OF DECOR STYLES TO CHOOSE FROM! BUT SO YOU DON'T GET YOUR TINSEL IN A TANGLE, GABRIELLE FAGAN ASKS AN EXPERT FOR ADVICE ON THREE WAYS TO TURN A TREE INTO A STUNNING FOCAL POINT BY GABRIELLE FAGAN

I

f you thought dressing the Christmas tree was just a run-of-the-mill seasonal ritual, think again - there's a host of decor styles to choose from. Naturally, you can simply untangle the tinsel and randomly pop on an unco-ordinated collection of cherished decorations gathered over the years - but you'd be missing the opportunity to make the tree the star of the seasonal show. "Generally, people are putting much more time and thought into creating a 'look' for their tree which will often echo the style of their home," says Jane Bailess, assistant buyer for decorative accessories at John Lewis. "e key themes this season, such as gold, red and white, silver and white, can be followed exclusively or combined to great effect. "For instance, classic red decorations can be interpreted traditionally on a green tree or you could add white baubles for a more Skandi style. ese are especially striking if displayed on a snow-flocked tree. "Gold and silver always evoke a feeling of restrained luxury, and evoke a shimmering glittering effect. You can choose glass decorations in a palette of pure silver mixed with white or opt for 52

antique gold and bronze baubles which look dramatic on a black tree." We're so fond of trees as a focal point for the celebrations that many homes now even boast two trees, says Bailess. "Our simple, contemporary style paper trees are hugely popular and people are often choosing them as a second tree perhaps for a hall, dining area or even the garden. ey'll have their main tree in the living room," she says. John Lewis's paper tree selection starts from £45 for a 4ft Prelit Glitter Paper Tree. It's new Snowy Paper trees are suitable for outdoor use, from £50 for a 4ft one. "Paper trees are also ideal for smaller spaces as they don't take up so much room, and people enjoy experimenting with themes. Our latest is a Japanese style with Eastern-look baubles featuring traditional Lucky Cats and Japanese dolls," says Bailess. So there's no need to get your tinsel in a tangle, or 5

despair of your decorations this season. Simply choose a look to suit your style then sit back and wait for the seasonal compliments. A TOUCH OF FROST Indulge in the most romantic style for a tree with a sprinkling of winter white, either a snow-dusted tree or a display of pure white and silver baubles. "is evokes the winter wonderland scene which we all dream of waking up to on Christmas Day," says Bailess. "It keys in to the popular Skandi-style which has a simple, cosy feel and is also subtle and elegant. If you want to personalise, add hand-made decorations such as white knitted pieces." Tip: If you're using an artificial tree, take time to spread the branches out when you unpack it and ensure the core of the tree is seen as little as possible. Tree smart: White baubles contrast well on a green tree and Tesco's Western Pine tree, £39.94, is a beauty. Alternatively, choose a 6ft Luxury Woodland tree with artificial snow, £125, Marks & Spencer. Bauble-Licious: Paperchase's bauble selection includes a Ho Ho Ho glass bauble filled with fake snow, £2.50; a White Feather Peacock, £10, available in selected Paperchase stores. John Lewis's collection of white and silver features a white and silver matte snowflake bauble, £3, and snow-capped shiny silver bauble, £3. GOLDEN GLAMOUR Metallics are already adding glamour to interiors this year and a gold gilded tree and decorations will make a glittering statement. "is is a richly opulent look for a tree and the sheen and lustre of gold adds warmth and richness to a setting," says Bailess. "It shouldn't look sparse so use more decorations in gold and bronze rather than less and a generous amount of lights to conjure a magical effect." Tip: Start from the bottom of the tree when arranging lights and slowly work up to the top, taking them in a spiral effect. Tree smart: House of Fraser's Pied A Terre 6ft gold glitter tipped tree, £150. For 5

drama, contrast gold decorations with a John Lewis Black Flocked tree, £50 for a 4ft one and £140 for an 8ft tree. Bauble-licious: Decadence fabric covered ornate gold bauble, £7.50, and gold decadence encrusted rose clip, £6.50 for two, both from the Linea range, House of Fraser. eatre jewel bauble, £2.50, and Gold Criss Cross bauble, £4, John Lewis. FESTIVE FUN If you adore all things festive, a green tree with bright splashes of that traditional seasonal colour - red - is irresistible. "You can opt for jolly festive symbols such as Santas and snowmen for a nostalgic look harking back to Christmas past, when tree decor was less stylised," says Bailess. "Or, if you want to give a crisper more modern, Skandi feel interspersed with white baubles and wooden decorations. Red, green and white is one of the most versatile colour combinations and means new decorations can easily be added year after year." Tip: Arrange one matching set of baubles at a time so you end up with a well-spaced out display and allow each style to star. Tree smart: Tesco Finest 6ft Windsor Fir Tree, available online, £25. Bauble-licious: Set of two Robin and Fir Tree Baubles, in white or red, a pair £8.75, Berry Red. A Jolly Santa head glass bauble, £4.50, John Lewis. "is is a mix of traditional and a Lapland-feel," says Bailess. "Vintage-style baubles and the rustic look of wooden or felt decorations will blend well. ere's huge popularity for animals and birds, particularly stags and robins this year, and this look keys into that brilliantly." A

s winter approaches there's no better time to transform your bedroom into a luxurious bolthole, where you can relax as well as sleep. You'll ensure sweet dreams if you literally allow your imagination to run wild and indulge your taste to create a sanctuary that soothes your senses. "When it comes to creating the perfect winter retreat, you need to make sure it's as snug and as inviting as possible," says Damian Topping at bed specialists, Dreams. "We're demanding far more of this room than ever before, because it's often used as another 'lounge' where we sit and relax, watch television, and generally enjoy private time. "Nowadays, we find people have very definite ideas about their style. ey've often stayed in hotels and want to replicate a look they've liked, whether it's ultra-traditional, romantic or a sophisticated, 'hotel' style which leans to the contemporary." e bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom and will dominate the space, so care needs to be taken in choosing its scale, design and style. But equally important is making the right decor choice, says colour and design manager at Dulux Rebecca ompson. "Colour affects our mood and is particularly key in setting this room's atmosphere. While soft neutrals conjure a serene, restful space, that doesn't mean you can't have colour which is so popular in homes currently," she says. "Greens and blues are popular, and I'd favour a rising star in the 56

colour palette, indigo. It's a striking, rich statement shade inspired by dreamy, ocean landscapes hidden from everyone but deep sea divers. "It tones with warm neutrals or other soothing tones of blue or purple." Get the look with Indigo Night from the Dulux Paint Mixing range, one litre emulsion, £14.89. If a makeover's beyond the budget, simply opting for new bedding to welcome winter can be just as effective, advises interiors specialist, Alison Cork. "Good bed linen can totally transform not only the look of your bedroom but also your sleep quality," she says. "A beautiful set of crisp white soft sheets will give a bed an instant lift, and the comfort and texture can help you drift off more comfortably too." ROMANTIC STYLE Four-poster beds, buttoned headboards and sumptuous fabrics are all key ingredients of a room where indulgence and sensuality rule. "is is a room which is a visual feast and pleases the senses," says Rachael Offer, senior designer at Ashley Wilde, who have a variety of celebrity bed linen brands. "Mix sumptuous faux fur cushions with silky satin and velvet fabrics to create a full-on luxury feel. Little details count as well, from gilded mirrors to glass ornaments which catch the light, and lighting's all important. "Give a soft flattering glow with fairy lights, side lamps or candles."

Dunelm Mill is always rich on style but kind to the purse, and its white painted Lilly Metal bedstead, with brass-look details, starts from £179.99. A budget winner. Bedding: Truffle satin and jet black flock combine in Edessa design bed linen from the Kylie Minogue At Home collection, from £75 for a double duvet cover, from Ashley Wilde (available from various stockists nationwide). Plunder the Littlewoods range for special touches, such as a Pearl row and Shams (cushions), £85, Mongolian cushion, £35, and a gorgeous duck egg blue floral Magnolia bedding set, £25 for a double set, and matching throw, £85. Create twinkling candlelight safely with Philips Imageo LED rechargeable candle lights, from £19.99 for a set of three, Amazon. COUNTRY STYLE e essence of country style is pared-back decoration, with the emphasis on texture and quality and natural materials. Decor should be simple with painted or tongue-and-groove panelled walls, or wallpaper featuring nature to help set a rustic scene. "Keep clashing patterns to a minimum and instead layer textured soft furnishings, quilts and cushions to give a snuggly feel," says Damian Topping. "Use a large rug, such as a sheepskin, to add warmth on wooden floorboards or hard floors. Add to the air of informality by using, instead of a bedside table, books stacked in a small tower by the bedside. Opt for functional, practical lights and a few well-chosen prints for the walls. Fussy embellishment has no place in these rooms." Boudoir buys: Bare winter trees, depicted on Birch wallpaper, £20 a roll in steel grey, would be a perfect backdrop for a Toronto bed, in oak with leather headboard, £775 for a double. Both from John Lewis. Alternatively, treat yourself to a new headboard, such as one reflecting the trend for Highland checks and plaids. Modern headboard, double £379, upholstered in Fanshaw plaid, from Marks & Spencer.

Bedding: Snuggle under an Alfie throw, £60, in faux shearling wool and suede, John Lewis. If you favour a homespun-style a cable knit throw, currently £55 from the Linea range at House of Fraser, is perfect, and would team well with its checked brushed cotton bed linen set, currently £72 for a double. Cox & Cox's hand stitched quilted bedspread, £150, in fashionable grey, and its linen cushion covers, from £32, have an appropriate simplicity. It also has suitable accessories such as a Nordic enamel pendant lamp, £120, and a cow hide patchwork rug, £700. Add cheery seasonal colours, in red and bright blue, with striped knitted throws, £30 each, from a selection at Bhs. HOTEL CHIC For contemporary hotel design invest in neutral bed linen, in crisp cotton and natural fabrics, a quality duvet, and pile up fluffy pillows, says Topping. "A plain decor scheme can be enlivened with a wall of pattern whose colours tie in with the neutral shades on the wall," he says. "Opt, ideally, for a generous sized headboard and streamlined furniture to add subtle but understated style. Overdress the bed, with an abundance of covers, quilts and a runner to create a lavish effect." Minimise clutter, he advises, and enhance the room with soft lighting using sidelighters and dimmers. "is style of room should cocoon you and black-out blinds and inter-lined curtains will avoid any chinks of light from disturbing your sleep." Boudoir buys: A Zinc bedstead, from £2,999 (mattress extra), from Dreams, upholstered in a metallic weave available in lush tones of taupe, mink, silver, nickel and amethyst, also has a 26-inch TV concealed at the foot. e White Company has made this 'hotel' style its own with its range of classic headboards and beautiful bedroom furniture. e buttoned Richmond, from £695, is one of my favourites, as is its white lacquer finish Linden four poster bed, from £2,500. Another great choice is a Jennifer upholstered bedstead, with button edging, £1,099 for a double, from John Lewis. Bedding: e Dorchester bed linen, made in Egyptian cotton, from £32 for a pillow case, and a Belmont Velvet Quilt, from £250, would make a decadent finishing touch. Both from e White Company. Embrace the look at a fraction of the price with Alison At Home's Berkeley bedding set, five-star quality 300 thread count with satin spot design, from £75 for a double set n

IF IT’S DIRTY WE CAN CLEAN IT!

R

yan Salter and Curtis Payne have been friends since they first met playing football at West Hatch Secondary School in Chigwell. ey are local boys, born and raised in East London. Upon leaving school they found themselves struggling to find a job other than manual labour that did not need any previous experience. e jobs were the same: they had no challenge and offered no future. When Ryan’s Mum, Julie, took her black bag out to the wheelie bin one morning, she came in and said “I always feel like I need a shower when I touch the wheelie bin – it’s disgusting and smells absolutely vile”. As if a light bulb went on in his head, Ryan asked if she would pay to have her bin cleaned; and the idea developed from there. With help and support from their families, they have managed to start their own wheelie bin cleaning company. It’s a huge financial commitment – the van and trailer cost over £20,000 – but Ryan and Curtis are determined to make the business an outstanding success and are looking to expand the company further. e trailer lifts the bin collecting any nastiness at the bottom; then allows for the bin itself to be thoroughly cleaned ridding it of any germs, disease and vermin ready for the next weeks bin bags. e water used is recycled, meaning that the environmental impact of the process is minimal and a full days work can be carried out on one van of water. e trailor can clean virtually anything. We also have separate specialist Jet washers to clean: ■ PVC plastic windows ■ Windows ■ Shutters on Shops and Warehouses ■ Conservatory roofs ■ Decking ■ Drives ■ Patios IF IT NEEDS CLEANING, THEY CAN DO IT. e last 18 months have been a period of rapid expansion; leading to frequent calls illustrating their success. From residential cleans – “I can’t believe how clean my driveway is, and the whole thing didn’t take that long” to business cleans – “ey are quick, efficient and reliable; we couldn’t ask for a better service”. ey aim to have their second cleaning van on the road by April of next year; with the aim to be the biggest wheelie bin cleaning company in East London and Essex with 5 vans on the road by 2015. With a positive work ethic, and proven results, that should prove to be easily achievable. 020 8500 1122 Ryan: 07503 158 792 Curtis: 07503 158 793 www.thewheeliecleaningcompany.co.uk ■

SPRING LAUNCH FOR A3 SPORTBACK AT ESSEX AUDI

T

he all –new Audi A3 Sportback is about to receive its UK launch at Essex Audi Centres throughout the region. Featuring a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, this versatile yet stylish new model is set to become a big hit with discerning family drivers. e third generation Sportback may be a mere 58mm longer between the wheels but inside there is a pronounced feeling of space for the occupants.

e exterior design with its three side windows and sharply defined “tornado line” profile has achieved a taut and concentrated look with a big helping of road presence. is latest model in the new A3 line-up also meets the needs of drivers who on occasion require a practical load-carrier, as despite its

62

DECEMBER2012

compact appearance, the Sportback offers a class-leading 1,220 litres of luggage space. Like all new Audi models, the A3 Sportback follows Audi’s trademark ultra-lightweight design principles, resulting in a kerb-weight that is a full 90 kg lower than its predecessor. is means that when equipped with the excellent 1.4TSFI engine, the five door model weighs in at just 1,205 kilograms – and that translates to serious savings in both fuel and emissions. Essex Audi will initially offer the new A3 Sportback with a choice of one TDI and two TFSI engines with two additional diesel engines and one petrol unit to follow later. All feature multiple efficiency technologies – direct injection, turbocharging, innovative thermal management and the Audi start-stop system, all of which translates into fuel savings of around 10 per cent compared with the previous model. e new Audi A3 Sportback is priced at just £620 premium over its three door stablemate, meaning that the very well equipped entry level model is priced at just £19,825 on the road. To find out more or to place an order for the first of the new Audi A3 Sportback models, please contact a member of the Essex Audi Sales Team. www.Essex-Audi.co.uk n

More of everything you need. Now available for order. When designing a new car, what you take away can be as important as what you add. It’s the approach we took with the all new A3 Sportback. With its five-door design and flowing silhouette, it gives an impression of movement even when still. And we’ve also added a lot more interior and luggage space without significantly increasing the car’s dimensions. The result is everything you need, nothing you don’t. The all new Audi A3 Sportback is now available to order. Please contact us on the details below or visit audi.co.uk/a3sportback
