Had they in fact, probed a little deeper, by reading on a little more from a credited property writers they would have learned that the quoted statistics was complied from reported figures, the stats of which come from agents handling the sale of property nation wide between the prices of £50,000 between £350,000. As I reported some time ago following the governments generous yet misguided plan of providing assistance to those buying new property below the price of £250,000. It did what it set out to do in helping first time buyers get a foot on the property ladder and at the same time was a godsend to developers. By allowing them to increase their formally pathetically slim margins, and almost simultaneously cranking up £150,000 homes to £250,000 homes. is coming January it is planned to give the same assistance to all buyers of homes under £650,000 in price, whether they be new or pre-owned. he London Borough of Redbridge can certainly boast some of the best schools in the area. According to DfE statistics: Redbridge primary school league tables show that Redbridge primary schools perform better than average. ey rank 13 amongst the 33 London Boroughs. As most parents know, if your child is to enjoy future success with GCSEs and A’levels, an excellent primary school education is paramount. Setting the foundations for future development is dependent upon a solid primary school and understanding of the basics before it becomes complicated. King Solomon High School - e rewards were certainly enjoyed at King Solomon High School. It may have been raining and the weather may have been grey… but that didn’t stop the sunshine and joy that filled the school as students opened their GCSE results. Screams of joy as some students achieved results far beyond what had been expected. e school celebrated many high grades across all subjects. Excited children inside the school, nervous parents waiting outside… at wait can feel like an eternity. Most children at the school savoured their results or commiserated with those who were disappointed. Departing headteacher, Spencer Lewis was very happy with the results: thirty per cent of grades were A/A* with 12 per cent of the year achieving 10 or more As/A*s. Well done to all those at King Solomon High School. 20

CHIGWELL SCHOOL – Celebrated incredible results too. 41% of all grades awarded were A* which is x6 the national average. In addition, this result facilitated the pinnacle A* as the most common grade gained by Chigwell’s pupils this year. Out of 71 students: 19 achieved seven A* grades or more. FOREST SCHOOL – An incredible 71% of all GCSE grades awarded were at A*/A – an improvement on last year. A third of the year group achieved straight A*/A grades and two thirds of the pupils achieved at least, six A*/A grades. For the first time, all Year 11 pupils were entered for the Higher Project Qualification – 77% of all grades achieved were A*/A. BANCROFTS SCHOOL – Bancrofts is an independent coeducational day school. ere are 1000 pupils aged between 7-18. Founded by the Drapers’ Company in 1737, Bancrofts offers a strong academic education and a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. e results for GCSEs this year reflect the school’s success. 98.3% of all examinations were awarded A*, A or B. Apparently this is the best result ever. Over half of all examinations were awarded A*; eight pupils even received 10 x A*s and a further 16 pupils achieved 9 A*s. Despite the news stating that there has been a dip in results, certainly not in our local schools where results are exceptional, reflecting the work of pupils, their parents support and also schools and teachers n

MONKEY MUSIC IS HERE LOUD AND CLEAR!
M
onkey Music, the award winning pre-school music group for children aged 3 months – 4 years across the UK, is now officially open in South Woodford and Woodford Green. Classes are held every Wednesday (South Woodford Library) and Friday (All Saints’ Church, Woodford Green), and Kate Panayi is delighted with the response so far. “Monkey Music was the first group of its kind when it first started in London in 1993” said Kate. “It is wonderful to see how totally absorbed children become in Monkey Music and how quickly they pick up musical concepts. Call to book a free trial session – you won’t be disappointed!” Many studies have shown that music enhances other learning, such as the acquisition of language, listening skills, maths skills, auditory discrimination, social understanding, and personal discovery. If children have music classes which are both fun and nurturing, ultimately it may inspire a passion for music that continues throughout their life. Music classes for pre-schoolers are based on the premise that all children are musical. You only have to put a saucepan and a wooden spoon in front of a toddler to see how natural making music is to a young child. Monkey Music aims to introduce music to very young children in a fun way they can easily understand and enjoy, with specialist teachers who gently encourage social and musical skills within a fun, stimulating and friendly environment. Unique to Monkey Music is their newest curriculum which has been specially written for babies from 3 months. Called “Rock‘n’Roll”, each class is themed around the everyday life of a very young child and is a special time to enjoy the sensory experience of sound. Children will be exposed to many different kinds of songs at Monkey Music, with different beats and rhythms. ey will skip, hop, march, clap and step to the beat, showing their understanding of rhythm, beat and the feeling of the music. Teachers show toddlers how to play imaginatively on age-appropriate instruments. You can easily see why most children love their weekly music class! It also teaches them to take turns (not all the children can play the mini-drums at the same time!), to listen to their teacher and to others. ese are valuable lessons to learn before starting school. Kate Panayi, the Principal of Monkey Music South Woodford, Loughton and Buckhurst Hill, is a professional actress with over 20 years’ experience of performing. After having her two young sons, she discovered Monkey Music and completely fell in love with it. “I was amazed by how much the boys enjoyed it. It was by far and away their favourite class”. Kate is extremely excited to be bringing Monkey Music to the South Woodford area.

Q: How do your schools perform academically? A: At our two prep schools, Coopersale Hall and Oaklands, we prepare children

for entrance exams to a wide variety of schools at 11+. Most get their first choice of school, whether selective or state and many children were offered places at more than one school. At our senior school, Normanhurst, our students sit GCSEs at age 16 and they consistently perform extremely well. Our pupils' GCSE results for 2013 were excellent with 91% of pupils gaining A* to C grades, as our small class sizes allow more individual attention. Q: How do you keep in touch with what parents want from their children’s school?
Q: What was new last year and what plans are coming up? A: Science features heavily on the curriculum, so last year we upgraded Normanhurst’s main Science Lab and this summer we have upgraded the Science facilities at Oaklands and Coopersale Hall. Oaklands had a new library at Easter, and both Oaklands and Normanhurst will benefit from Kindergarten refurbishments over the summer. Coopersale Hall has recently had a new nature reserve which is very popular for pond dipping and nature studies. We constantly review the education on offer and are always expanding the choice of before and after school activities at all three schools. Q: How does being a group of schools benefit pupils and parents? A: e three schools together have around 750 pupils and 220 members of staff. is means we can share best practice and good ideas more readily. We hold regular combined events, such as the September Year 3 camp night, Autumn Term Art Exhibition, and Spring Term Music Festival. ese offer excellent opportunities for the pupils and help to bring the schools together. Q: How can prospective families see your schools in more detail? A: Our next Open Days are during the first week in October and having toured the school and met staff and children, many parents choose to register for places at those events. However, parents are also welcome to arrange a private tour with the Headmistress at any time. Competition for places is high so early registration is essential. The Oldest Groupie in Town… WORDS AND THOUGHTS: MICHELLE HARRIS
D
o we relax enough? Are we pursuing our preferred hobbies and ambitions? Do we spend enough time with the family? Or is recession gnawing away at our spare time? For those of us with our own businesses – do we regularly ask ourselves – are we achieving or realising the dreams we had when we first set-up? (Please see other feature: Improving Business Development) Instead of having more time for the other important aspects of our lives, are we instead working even harder? Working longer hours and under more pressure whilst still trying to keep one step ahead of the recession game. I must confess that my hours are long, arduous and unrelenting. So I’m probably the biggest sinner out there. However that first step can make all the difference to another path. Trying to relax is hard and very difficult when you’re juggling but that first leap can be the difference between decades of mistake compared to getting back on track. How do we start? By just cutting off and relaxing. Holidays are normally that important milestone. Taking time-out to recharge – spend time on ourselves without feeling guilty. It sounds so simple… BUT something very small can make such a difference as that first taste – could turn into a menu of delights…
Michelle Harris My first step started with the purchase of Rod Stewart’s e Great American Songbook. A 4 volume boxed set that offers respite and absolute auditory joy. I heard this fantastic album at a friend’s house and upon my return home – immediately bought my own set from Amazon. Next day it arrived – thrust through the letter box by an angry postman, I’ve been playing it ever since. Feeling compelled to just listen to the lyrics, being swayed by the melodies, drawn into a fantasy of those great American songs; the chords almost seduce and beg your entire attention. At first it was background music in the kitchen. en music in the car followed by download to my iPod. But the more I listened – the more I needed to hear. Instead of going into the garden and grabbing a fist full of tools – my first reaction changed to taking a deckchair out into the sunshine, a cosy cushion… a table for my glass of chilled water or coffee. Just relaxing… feeling the sun on my face, eyes closed as I sway with the songs. Riding the waves of the melodies. Amazing how the songs are truly inspirational and even help with the creative process of writing. e weeds are growing, the grass is getting longer but does it matter? Not really. For however many days are left of this glorious summer sunshine, listening to As Time Goes by (Duet with Queen Latifah) and Moonglow as it shines a whole new dimension on life, love, beauty and just enjoying, a simple transitory pleasure savoured by just seizing the moment. ere’s always time to write. IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
I
t’s ironic that cutting off from business, facilitates the perfect scenario for key decisions. Standing back makes everything so much clearer. Perhaps how you work, ideas for improvement, what’s good and perhaps not-so-good and therefore merits further address. Whilst relaxing and switching off, the mind focuses on what’s important and without the sundry blur that can sometimes cloud reality and judgements. As a short précis, the following questions could help steer a positive path for some important business decisions: A Website. Essential for all businesses. Does your website appeal to your target audience? What are your competitors saying? Are your mission statement, USP and call to action more strategic? Try and look at your website as a potential client. B Is your website graphic responsive? For instance, can it adapt to a mobile, iPad etc. is is the latest trend with up-to-date websites. C When considering all the marketing and advertising areas that help drive traffic to your website, are you maximising your potential and visibility to your target audience? D Have you considered your profits for last year – your forecasts for this year – and how you are going to achieve this and take your business to the next level? What are you going to implement that will make the difference and see a positive ROI (return on investment). What are your competitors doing? Can you trump their initiatives? E Does your website have videos? ese give the viewer an interactive experience and are great for helping your business to get noticed on YOUTUBE. Videos keep the website interesting and can even facilitate a company personality. F Do you understand Guerrilla Marketing? What is your business implementing that is unique? G Do you BLOG? ey keep your website fresh, up-to-date and are imperative for SEO. Preferably there should be two blogs a month – do you have a strategy for on-going blogs that help to promote your business, your successes and how your business is developing and offering improved services and/or products? H Social Media. Are you maximising your presence on the important social media sites? Facebook is becoming passé. LinkedIn is used by most professionals. Google+ is the way

forward. Having analysed all social media – Google devised their own which incorporates the best of everything. Are you on Google+? Have you set-up your circles, so the right messages are going to the correct: a) clients, b) potential clients, c) past clients to keep them as present business, d) maintenance of your reputation. How important is social media? Imperative. Primarily you need a strategy, a budget forecast and your ideal arrival point. e stages in between are what’s necessary to strategize your ideas. Your marketing and advertising budget is the investment (not expense) that helps your business to drive forward. So now really is the time to invest and to develop ideas which will help your business and especially when competitors are cutting back. Would you like HELP to DEVELOP YOUR BUSINESS? CHIGWELL BUSINESS GROUP CONTINUES TO BOOST LOCAL ECONOMY Anyone who has started a business will know how much time, money and energy is required in order to turn a great idea into a successful reality. Local business networking group, Chigwell Business Group (CBG), has launched a scheme to support start-up businesses in the area. We spoke to members Mick Apps of D C White & Co. and Sukhjit Ahluwalia of Avery Emerson Solicitors… Tell us more about how CBG plans to help start-up businesses? Sukhjit: Start-up businesses can apply to the group for three months’ free membership. We have also allocated £1000 funding which all start-up members can apply for. Mick: At CBG businesses can access the contacts of other members, as well as learning from the expertise around the table. e support and shared experiences of other business owners which translate across all sectors is the reason I’ve remained a member for five years. For example, D C White & Co. repairs vehicles damaged in accidents and has achieved the PAS 125 certification. is means we meet industry -respected standards and prove commitment to best practices in everything we do – from documentation, training and the parts we use to ensuring optimum turnaround times. CBG allows us to talk about the benefits of this and encourage other businesses to apply for their own industry certifications. Sukhjit: I agree.
SOME MEMBERS OF CHIGWELL BUSINESS GROUP DISCUSS THEIR START-UP SCHEME'
Employment Law and Litigation is challenging and ever-changing. One of Avery Emerson’s main functions in the group is to keep them updated on the latest legislation and how it affects their business. It’s also about establishing relationships. CBG members trust us to confidentially handle their business and personal legal matters and will recommend us to their contacts. As well as learning from CBG’s collective expertise, start-ups will benefit from being recommended to others by group members. What was the motivation behind this idea? Mick: CBG is approaching its tenth birthday and, despite challenging financial times,
many members’ businesses are thriving due to the support and new business gained through the group. Quite simply, we wanted to give something back. Member businesses range from being established for thirty years D C Whites & Co. have been repairing vehicles for three decades - to just a few years old, but all of us can remember how challenging it was in the early days. Sukhjit: Entrepreneurship is being encouraged by the government via various initiatives at the moment, but at the same time, previous sources of support have been reduced. rough our work in the areas of Employment Law and Litigation we know that an increasing number of
people are starting their own businesses but, until they come to us, haven’t had any advice on the legal implications of their ventures. What advice would you give to any businesses thinking of taking part in this scheme? Mick: CBG is open to all businesses however long they’ve been established and we welcome visitors. It has definitely helped us to build good contacts and further our reputation for high standards. I would advise both start-ups and established businesses to get in touch. Sukhjit: e group genuinely wants to help local start-ups and is welcoming applications for funding. is isn’t Dragon’s Den and no one will be made to pitch – there is a simple application form to fill in. e aim is to benefit all businesses through mentoring and networking. CBG has helped Avery Emerson build on our reputation for being forward-thinking true specialists in our fields. Having been established over 10 years this year we want to use our expertise, and experience, to help build the reputation of new businesses, as well as support them through the challenges they may face. he unmistakable style of two of England’s most celebrated designers have left a distinctive imprint on the lovely lines of a grand Jacobean mansion in Essex, to make Audley End House & Gardens one of the most exquisite historic houses in the country. Inside, the hand of master architect Robert Adam has added a timeless elegance to its richly decorated and furnished rooms; outside the extensive landscape has been painted with the pastoral brush of landscape designer Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown to tame it into a quintessentially ‘English’ setting. e combination is magnificent and one which visitors cannot fail to find breathtaking. With more than 30 beautiful rooms to view - each containing period furnishings and works of art - pretty gardens and expansive grounds to explore, Audley End House is an amazing place to visit e house was originally a medieval Benedictine monastery but was converted in 1538 and became one of the largest and most opulent in Jacobean England. e House itself is a spectacular mansion, built to entertain royalty, and includes a Victorian Service Wing inviting people to wander through a world that was never intended to be seen. Carefully restored to its former heyday and opened in spring 2008, the functional heart of the house represents both prestige and opulence. Visitors can experience the reality of life for servants at Audley End and the extensive range of tasks they carried out to cater for the demands of the Braybrooke family and their retinue. that would have been carried out by the cook to feed the family, the guests and all the members of the household. Enter the coolness of the dairy where butter and cream would have been produced using the milk of the cows on the Home Farm. Plus, explore the wet and dry laundries where the weekly wash was sorted, washed by hand and dried and starched in a never ending cycle. At special times throughout the year, there is also the chance to see and hear from a host of characters who once lived and worked at Audley End. A recent addition is the historic stables, complete with resident horses and Victorian grooms. Opened in Spring 2010, the lovely 17th century building, with its gables, bays, mullioned windows and tall cupola, was originally home to 30-plus pampered horses, their grooms and the coaches, saddlery and other accoutrements that went with them to service the demands of a great country house. Understandably billed as one of the grandest surviving stables of the early 17th century, the re-presentation of the stables at Audley End also houses an exhibition on the changing landscape and tells a little of the stories of the estate staff of 1880. In addition there is also a small indoor play area and outdoor fun themed play area next to the Cart Yard Café, which is always very popular with younger visitors. Not to be overlooked are the beautiful gardens, which visitors can explore at their leisure, including an impressive formal garden and the working Organic Kitchen Garden which was restored in 1999. Renovated to its former glory it now looks as it would have done in late Victorian times. At Audley End it is possible to see elements of English gardening on a grand scale, originally carried out by the most influential designers of the day such as Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

ver the last couple of years I have been writing features on a specific subject e.g. teeth whitening, or dental implants, and so on. However, this information is readily available on our website. erefore, I have now decided to write about actual patients that have been treated at Smile Design By Ash – stories of how dental treatment can really change peoples’ lives! is month I will focus on a patient who was very nervous regarding having dental treatment. is article outlines how we helped her overcome her anxiety, thus enabling her to have the treatment she required. Research has shown that four out of five people have some level of anxiety when it comes to visit the dentist. is is very understandable because many people may have had a bad experience in the past (probably as a child). It is also one of the few occasions in life when they feel they are not in control – lying still, keeping the mouth open and allowing someone to work in there is not a naturally appealing thought. is is where NUCALM comes in. Nucalm is the best relaxation system I have been using as a dentist which has truly helped to relax all of my nervous patients. Imagine the scene…someone has placed a poisonous snake next to you; in this situation your sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”) will be working flat out! e signs are

feeling agitated, heavy breathing, anxiety, eyes wide open, trembling and not being able to keep still. ese signs are very familiar if you are a nervous patient visiting the dentist. Now imagine if I could get you in a state of almost deep sleep and feeling totally relaxed within a few minutes, your breathing shallow and normal, and your mind at ease… One of my anxious patients who recently had extensive dental treatment is Hania. Her testimonial after her treatment says it all: “I had problematic teeth ever since I can remember. One of my first memories is sitting in the chair having my tooth drilled with no
anaesthetic. I was about 3 or 4. ings did not improve much after that and by the time I reached adulthood I would do anything to avoid going anywhere near the dentist. When my German Shepherd jumped at me and broke one of my front teeth, I contacted Ash and we agreed on the treatment – some fillings, crowns and porcelain veneers. I had a couple of fillings done first and my anxiety was so high during the procedure (sweating, shaking, etc) that when I finished I felt like I had just spent an hour fighting Mike Tyson! When I realized I would have to sit in the chair for 3 hours for my next appointment, my anxiety was so high that I even considered cancelling the whole thing. Ash then suggested that I try NUCALM. I arrived for the appointment very apprehensive and I was given a couple of tablets (100% natural substances) to counteract the effects of adrenaline. I was also given dark glasses and headphones to listen to specially selected calming music. I thought to myself
“Poor Ash, his patience is going to be really tested today!” Within 5-10 minutes, I was so absorbed in the soothing music that when I was asked to have a break, I was almost annoyed for being interrupted. Six of my front teeth were prepared for the crowns/veneers in what seemed like 10 minutes. e after effects lasted longer and I was very relaxed for the rest of the day. I am looking forward to my next appointment now and can’t wait to use Nucalm again. I would really recommend it to anyone who is nervous about going to the dentist.” In summary, Nucalm takes 5 minutes to administer, it is a very natural process and you will be fully awake and ready to go home at the end of the treatment (compared to intra-venous sedation where you need an escort to drive you home and look after you for the rest of the day). My offer to anyone who is nervous (or even really stressed in life right now!) is to come and visit our unique dental practice, have a soothing cup of herbal tea, sit in our massage chair, try out the Nucalm for free and prove to yourself how relaxing it is. sun-damage to help repair and make the skin more even, however it is critical to recognise lesions that must not be treated and I would refer these clients to a Dermatologist. THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF DERMATOLOGISTS HAVE DEVELOPED THIS ABCD EASY-MOLE CHECK GUIDE TO HELP YOU IDENTIFY CHANGES.
A is for asymmetry, meaning that the two halves of this area may differ in shape and not match; B is for border, which may be irregular and the outside edges of the mole may be blurred;
is year so far we have had a pretty good summer, which makes us all feel good and helps to lift our spirits, however not protecting ourselves from UV light can be very dangerous. As the summer comes to an end I want to make you aware of looking out for skin cancer, this is the time you will have had lots of sun and early detection is vital. When I speak to my clients about sun protection, they will generally protect their face on a daily basis, after all it is the cheapest and most beneficial anti-ageing cream we have. However when it comes to the rest of the body many people don't bother. Yet when they go abroad they will? We need to take a leaf out of our distant friends in Australia to see how SPF protection all over their bodies is part of every day life. I think where the problem lies is where we get little hot weather we try to get as brown as we can in a short space of time. Furthermore we now as a generation typically enjoy on average a good two to three hot holidays yearly and often do not match our skin types to the right level of protection. Skin cancer is a preventable disease, however despite this, many people are still guilty of taking risks in the sun in order to get as brown as they can. Skin cancer incidence is on the rise in the UK, more than 100,000 people are newly diagnosed every year, and more worrying melanoma is the fastest rising than any other deadly cancer. e cancer research UK organisation reported in 2010 that there were 12,800 cases of melanoma diagnosed in the UK, making it the fifth most common cancer. Premature skin ageing of the skin is a clear sign of sun damage, changes in the pigment of skin or changes to moles could all point to skin cancer signs. I treat many clients with 38 SEPTEMBER2013
C is for colour, which may be uneven and patchy with different shades of black, brown and pink; D is for diameter as most melanomas, but not all, are at least 6mm in diameter but any change of size should be checked; E is for expert, if you're in doubt get it checked.
Not all pigmentation is a cause for concern, but there is no doubt that some of us see it as unsightly or ageing, there are many treatments like mild to moderate skin peeling, Intense Pulsed Light, microdermabrasion and many prescription creams that can help. A SMILE TO BE PROUD OF WORDS BY DEE BROWN
I
spent a lot of my childhood in the dental chair, so it was a surprise to me that I would end up on the other side of the suction! Ever since I was a child I have always been embarrassed of my smile. After a traumatic incident at the age of 10, I was left with a missing tooth at the front of my mouth. Smiling was non-existent and bullying became more apparent. I was taunted for having yellow crooked teeth as well as the gap. Often too embarrassed to talk, I was known as the quiet and shy girl. Crying every time I looked in the mirror became part of my daily routine. Whilst shuffling my way through secondary school, I endured eighteen hard months of wearing braces. is was followed by six months of wearing a removable brace (which I often broke so I didn’t have to wear it!). I was then ready to replace my missing tooth! My confidence grew, as I no longer had the ‘hillbilly’ smile I was taunted for; although little did I know this was only the beginning of my problems. I then started noticing my front tooth was gradually turning black – more ammunition for the school bullies! I found out that this was a tooth that I had also damaged during my trauma which had gradually died over the years. Following more dental treatment at the age of 15, I still did not have the natural white smile I was looking for. Fast forward 4 years and I found myself working in an environment I once dreaded - the dental practice! Still unhappy and disappointed with my smile, I decided to have
42 SEPTEMBER2013
another go at achieving the perfect smile. Again I was left upset and unfulfilled! In 2011 I began working at Smile Design by Ash. I could never have imagined what I was to personally gain from my new role. I was amazed how Ash could change someone’s life by creating a beautiful smile. I had always dreamed of having the experience we offer our patients and wanted to be able to smile with confidence like they now do. Even though I am an experienced dental nurse, I actually make a terrible patient! I find it difficult to sit still, I hate needles and unfortunately for me the local anaesthetic wears away very quickly! Ash overcame all of my fears. Music was changed regularly to keep me entertained. Ash’s amazing injection technique and stronger anaesthetic selection ensured the treatment was really comfortable. Finally, I now have the natural smile I always dreamed of. Ash has changed my life and that is something I cannot thank him enough for! I now beam with confidence and have no problems speaking to people I meet. I am no longer the shy and quiet girl in the corner. e greatest feeling is to be complemented on my smile - which now happens regularly! I can relate to our patients when they walk through the door and I am now able to relate to their newly found beauty when they leave! For a FREE INTIAL CONSULTATION and an opportunity to meet Ash Parmar, please call 020 8500 0544 or visit our informative website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk ■

W
hilst we live in a respectable neighbourhood National statistics indicate that burglaries in our immediate local area have risen by an alarming rate over the last twelve months. Triangle security solutions operate as a professional home watch scheme that offers a security solution which enables you to feel safer and more secure in your own home. eir aim is to provide a safer environment for local residents by acting as a deterrent to unwanted visitors. Whilst Police and local authorities are working tirelessly to combat the increase in burglaries in this area, operations such as neighbourhood watch schemes are failing to deter unwanted activity. Unfortunately due to increasing economic restraints

The passport to london’s thriving restaurant scene

New for 2013, London Restaurant Festival is proud to announce that chef, food writer and journalist Gizzi Erskine and television presenter Jonathan Ross will be on board; Gizzi joins as the new Chairperson, and Jonathan will be hosting a special film event in partnership with BAFTA 195 Piccadilly. festival, where great value Festival Menus are created by chefs to give food-lovers the chance to try new restaurants. The Festival Menu programme is run in partnership with Europe’s fastest growing online restaurant booking website, Bookatable.com, and Voss is the official water of London Restaurant Festival. London Restaurant Festival pioneered, and is now synonymous with, the concept of restaurant-hopping. To the sell-out Tapas Tours, in partnership with Estrella Damm, that have operated since 2011, LRF has added Cicchetti Trails in partnership with Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Japanese Journeys, that take place over the weekends of

the festival. This allows festival-goers to experience not just the best Spanish food in the capital, but also the most exciting Italian and Japanese places too. For each of the tours, a passport will be used to redeem a dish and a drink in each of six participating venues. Some of the restaurants involved include: Amesta, Copita, Fernandez & Wells; Polpo, Massimo, Theo Randall at the Intercontinental; Inamo, Tonkotsu and Sake No Hana. A favourite since 2009, the LRF Gourmet Odyssey – London’s most original gastronomic road trip in partnership with Champagne Laurent-Perrier – returns with three tours where guests have a course in different restaurants, including a first for the muchtalked-about Shard restaurants: Aqua Shard and Hutong. Here guests can at once enjoy spectacular food and unrivalled views of the city. The Masters Gourmet Odyssey includes Benares, Wild Honey and Gauthier Soho. On the Discovery Gourmet Odyssey guests will eat at Social Eating House, Gymkhana and Picture. In partnership with LivingSocial, Graze lets food-lovers enjoy all the best restaurants in one area. The Graze passport is valid for the whole festival period. Taking place separately in the West End, In the City and Up North, the passport gives a complimentary drink when you visit each of the 10 or 12 participating restaurants for a small plate (from the Graze Menu). Some of the restaurants involved: Providores, Arbutus, Dishoom, Cotidie and Rotary. This year Eat Film returns with a twist. In partnership with BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, LRF has invited Jonathan Ross to curate a three-course dinner inspired by the 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film, Spirited Away, in the stunning cinema and restaurant at BAFTA headquarters,
195 Piccadilly. The ticket price includes a cocktail reception, the screening and a three-course dinner with wine. New to LRF 2013 is Sunday Best, an exclusive event for American Express Cardmembers, where guests will have the opportunity to dine at some of the most celebrated restaurants in town, in the company of the chefs. Sunday Best will see renowned chefs including Jason Atherton, Theo Randall, Angela Hartnett, Mark Sergeant and Marianne Lumb all cook one-off Sunday lunches, followed by a meet and greet with guests. Chairperson Gizzi Erskine says “I am absolutely delighted to be the new chairperson of London Restaurant Festival. This is a festival that continues to thrill Londoners with its gastronomic delights, creating unforgettable events. Like many other food lovers, I am most excited about sampling the very best food London has to offer and discovering some wonderful new restaurants”. LRF Founder Simon Davis comments “LRF is about getting out and discovering as many restaurants as you can in a fun way and for all budgets. There’s an insatiable appetite in London for eating out and sharing that experience and LRF feeds it.” Tickets for the festival are available to the general public from TicketMaster www.ticketmaster.co.uk, LivingSocial www. livingsocial.com or Live Bookings www.bookatable.com/uk American Express Card members can purchase tickets for 2013 via www.ticketmaster.co.uk/americanexpress. AUDI RS 7 PUTS OTHER SUPERCARS IN THE SHADE
B
ack in 2010 when the Audi A7 burst onto the UK market, the stunning new entrant to the top of the executive class created a whole new automotive market segment. e A7 had taken the opulent luxury of the A8, added hatchback practicality and successfully brought the two together into an elegant premium coupé silhouette design. ree years later and Essex Audi is delighted to welcome the last word in Audi Sportback excellence with the arrival of the Audi RS 7. Combining seductive curves with slingshot performance, this red-hot luxury 4-seater turns its twin-turbo V8 power into a sub-4 second 0-62 mph and 189 mph top speed capability. Despite these extraordinary performance figures, the RS 7 still manages to deliver “ordinary” economy figures, achieving 28.8 mpg in the EU combined test cycle. is is primarily the result of the new engine’s Cylinder On Demand (COD) system, which automatically shuts down half the model’s eight cylinders when the engine is under low to intermediate load. And when the model’s 560 PS and 700 Nm are required, the RS 7 instantly returns to its awesome 8–cylinder supercar status at the push of the accelerator pedal. With 20% aluminium construction for significant weight-saving and of course Audi’s famous quattro power delivery system, the RS 7 delivers exceptional ride refinement and high-speed cornering capability. Externally the new model displays its sporting pedigree with a rear diffuser and spoiler, elliptical exhaust tailpipes, matt titanium applications and exclusive exterior colours. Inside, the occupants are treated to a huge specification, subtly presented in the RS tradition with RS super-sports seating in the front and the latest Audi RS design feature throughout. is subtle and eminently practical supercar is open to order and for the fortunate few, deliveries can be expected later this year… For more information or to arrange a test drive in the Audi model of your choice, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Centre, details of which can be found at www.Essex-Audi.co.uk ■ 56

ROAD TEST: Range Rover Sport THE LATEST SET OF WHEELS ARE TAKEN FOR A SPIN. THIS MONTH: RANGE ROVER SPORT. BY IAIN DOOLEY
or a company famous for producing utility 4x4s with a hint of ‘old money’ luxury, Land Rover’s move into the lifestyle end of the market - with the Evoque - has been nothing short of a lifealtering experience for the British brand. You name it, it’s skyrocketed: production numbers, brand awareness, sales, profits. Granted, the Evoque wasn’t the company’s first foray into the ‘lifestyle’ market, that honour fell to the first generation Range Rover Sport. That said, it shared more than few design cues with the equally chunky-looking Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery.
F
That’s all gone the way of the dinosaur with the arrival of the latest generation Range Rover Sport. Visual similarities to the Evoque, the rock star of the range, are no coincidence, while Land Rover’s continued focus on reducing weight and boosting the level of 58
SEPTEMBER2013
technology in its cars continues with this more streamlined Sport. Lighter, more economical and offering a more engaging on-road driving experience than the car it replaces, alongside Land Rover’s long established off-road credentials, this new generation Sport also boasts more cabin space plus the option of a familyfriendly third row of seats. One other option worthy of note is the car’s high-low transfer gearbox. Reflecting its onroad and lifestyle bias, it’s not now a feature you can expect to see as standard on the Sport. Land Rover executives are, however, keen to stress that even without it, the Sport’s off-roading potential still easily exceeds the abilities of most drivers and the competition. Still, you can always tick the appropriate box for the full-fat experience if you need it.
And, just like with the latest Range Rover, the Sport adopts its maker’s next-gen Terrain Response system, which includes an auto mode clever enough to sense changes in terrain and change the engine, gearbox and suspension settings accordingly. Manual control remains and, despite the Sport’s streamlined looks and glossy celebrity endorsements, you’re only a few button presses away from being able to confidently scale mountains, wade through rivers or charge through power-sapping sand. The final piece in the Range Rover Sport’s performance jigsaw is the car’s engine line-up. For maximum wow factor there’s a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol motor that’s predictably destined to be most popular in places where petrol is cheap and owners are super-rich. For the rest of us, diesel will be the fuel of choice, with a high power 3.0-litre SDV6 variant
RR__ 04/09/2013 20:23 Page 2
moto rs
boasting 292 horsepower and a lower power version for entry-level models producing a still useful 258 horsepower. V8 diesel power is also in the pipeline. On the road the high power six-cylinder diesel Sport is only trumped by the supercharged model in the way it sounds; the former is quiet and refined while the petrol experience is dominated by a Nascar exhaust note if that appeals. With an embarrassment of riches in both power and torque departments, the SDV6 Range Rover Sport is the consummate all-rounder. Ample low down torque is complimented by superb throttle sensitivity, making it ideal not just for inching over treacherous obstacles but also inching into supermarket car par spaces. The Sport excels at motorway journeys and spirited A-road sprints. Bodyroll is expertly kept in check and, despite the presence of aesthetically pleasing but large diameter wheels, ride comfort is also top notch. For a car destined to spend much of its time on the road, this should be music to any prospective owner’s ears. And as an owner you’ll also spend most of your time inside the Sport’s plush cabin. Land Rover’s minimalist approach with the latest Range Rover has extended to the Sport, and the lack of fuss and modest button count allows you to better appreciate the swathes of wood, leather and more contemporary trim that tastefully decorate the Sport’s interior. Factor in ample room fore and aft plus sound ergonomics for the driver, and it’s hard to fault an environment with a cabin ambience easily rivalling that of the best conventional luxury saloons. With all the usual safety and comfort equipment you’d expect to see at this price point, plus the Sport’s impressive driving dynamics and the cabin ambience, it’s clear that this second generation car has raised the bar in an already competitive market.
Facts at a glance Model: Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic, from £74,995 on the road. Range Rover Sport range from £51,550 to £81,550. Engine: 3.0-litre diesel unit developing 292bhp. Transmission: 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, driving all four wheels through 4x4 system. Performance: Maximum speed 138mph, 0-62mph 7.2 seconds. Economy: 37.7mpg. CO2 Rating: 199g/km. INTERVIEW WITH NIKKI TSINDIDES OF MOORCROFT
W
ith quite a few long standing business’ having closed in the last few years, it’s refreshing to hear of a new business sprouting up, and even more refreshing when there is a woman at the helm. Life editor Faye Manning caught up with Nikki Tsindides owner of Moorcroft properties. FM It’s great to see more and more woman in business Do you think being a woman will help you succeed? NT Well I wouldn’t say being a woman will help me succeed, but I will say if you have a can do attitude it helps you cope with all the things the business can throw at you, and you know what they say about woman multitasking, that helps too! FM How long have you been in the estate agency business and how has it changed ? NT I’ve working in the property industry for 15 years, I have worked for Corporate companies and picked up the values of regular reporting, and keeping very up to date information, I’ve also worked at some independently owned companies, and I think until you have seen how both work you don’t get the best view. Once you have seen the pitfall and good things with both you can offer the clients that you are selling homes for the best service. ..How has it changed wow its immense all the world over computers have changed so much however the one thing the computer can’t replace is personal service, experience and I genuinely want to help people move.
FM So you have been trading now over 9 months how is the market and how are things going for Moorcroft ? NT Its actually not bad at the moment, houses are selling, but it’s the same old story really some sellers are Nikki Tsindides unrealistic with their expectations of what they will sell for. Sadly some agents will play on this and over price a property to get the client to sign up with them, and then slowly but surely talk the client in to reducing the price, it’s the kind of thing that gives estate agents a bad name. My honest train of thought is be honest and realistic. So far it’s been paying off we have properties to sell and let from as far as Canary Wharf to West Essex, and some fabulous properties in Chigwell and Loughton, but you can always check our sales and lettings on right move or Zoopla. FM of course it’s all about getting your profile out to our reader s… NT I that case if you want to sell your property quickly professionally give me a call!!! FM Thanks for your time Nikki and good luck n
