FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our January issue…

C

olchester Zoo is has won many awards for its modern enclosures, green practices and conservation work. With over 270 species set in 60 acres of beautiful parkland and lakes, an array of daily displays, an undercover soft play area, four adventure play areas, e Lost Madagascar Express road train and so much more...your day out will be action packed! You can get closer to a whole range of animals during your visit including the unique chance to help feed the elephants and giraffes yourself! Essex really does have a phenomenal amount of key sports personnel within its boundaries. Whether Sally Gunnell who practised jumping over hay stacks at her parents’ farm in Chigwell to becoming an Olympian Gold Medallist in the 1992, 400 m hurdles. e only female British athlete to have won Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles and who also broke the world record. She was made an MBE in 1993 and OBE in 1998. When it comes to Football, the England’s team finest moment has to be when they won the world cup in 1966. Its captain, Robert Frederick Chelsea "Bobby" Moore, OBE (12 April 1941 – 24 February 1993) also resided in Chigwell whilst married to his first wife Tina. With regard to restaurants, coffee shops and general pottering, George Lane has to be one of the liveliest. Whether a day-time stroll, evening revelry or simply adding a little adventure time to the weekly shop, it’s

tempting and easy to just take life down a notch or two, whilst balancing a practical routine with some light relief. May we take this opportunity to wish our advertisers and readers a very happy, successful and healthy 2015.

local education

oak tree schools Q: What is the Oak-tree GrOup Of schOOls? a: e Oak-Tree Group - Normanhurst, Coopersale Hall and Oaklands Schools - are three privately-owned independent schools in the Epping Forest area, all owned and managed by the Hagger family. Each school has its own individual character and together they offer an excellent standard of education in happy, secure and family-orientated environments.

Q:Where are the schOOls? a: Normanhurst School is in the centre of Station Road in North Chingford, which is very convenient for the main line trains and buses for families to use. Children often use the nearby Chingford Plain on the edge of Epping Forest for nature walks and field trips. Coopersale Hall School is at the end of its own 500m drive only 5 minutes from Epping High Street and underground station. Oaklands School is on Albion Hill, behind the High Road duck pond at the start of Loughton. Collectively there are around 760 pupils within the Group. Most live within a 5 mile radius of each school, which means we attract families from areas such as Woodford, Loughton, Chigwell, eydon Bois, Wanstead, North Chingford and Epping. Epping’s Coopersale Hall is popular also with families from the surrounding villages and Harlow, Waltham Abbey and North Weald.

Q: hOW dO the pupils and parents benefit frOm beinG in One Of the Oak-tree schOOls? a: ere many opportunities for pupils to collaborate and compete with inter-school activities and competitions. Last year saw a Group Art Festival and Group Music and Dance Festival and this year has seen the annual Group Year 3 overnight camp in the Oaklands grounds and various sporting fixtures. A full programme of educational activities 1 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

has been planned for coming months. Family events include the annual Oak-Tree Fireworks Display held at Oaklands for some 1000 people and the popular biennial joint Oak-Tree Summer Ball for parents. Our Oak-Tree holiday clubs are always full and cater for children from 3 to 11.

Q: hOW dOes beinG part Of a GrOup help yOur staff With the runninG Of the schOOls? a: ere are around 240 qualified teachers, specialists, support and ancillary staff across the Group, led by the Head Office Management Team overseen by Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger. Given the proximity of the 3 schools to each other, this allows for some unique collaboration. From shared planning, training courses and communal resources, the schools get together regularly. We organise ‘cluster’ meetings between sections of each staff to share excellent practice. Our Headmistresses meet frequently to collaborate when developing the curriculum or introducing the latest educational initiatives.

Q: hOW can interested parents learn mOre? a: Each day is an Open Day in the Oak-Tree Schools. Parents thinking about educating their children with us are always welcome for a personalised tour and in-depth discussion with the Headmistress. Our ‘School in Action’ Open Mornings coming up in March are excellent for seeing the schools on a normal day and our older pupils act as outstanding ambassadors with their guided tours. Our new websites are packed full of information and give a flavour of life at Normanhurst, Coopersale Hall and Oaklands. ■

Star Copywriting’S Six StepS to SuCCeSS As most of the Western world does not work between the Christmas and New Year holiday season, it is easier to relax and distance yourself (if possible) from the daily business grind and pressures. However once we get into January – it’s resolutions, goals, refreshed ambitions and business focus. If looking to move forward, it’s never too late to go back to the basics.

STEP 1 - GOALS Write down your goals. What you would like to achieve in the next six months, twelve months and three years? Seeing these ambitions on paper (or screen) sets an immediate focus on what needs to be done in order to achieve the desired result. Imagine how your lifestyle and family could benefit from an improved business success… Now work backwards – what are the milestones you need to achieve along the way? At what point should you be in three months, six months, one year? It doesn’t just happen, there has to be a plan, a process and successes en route.

STEP 2 – YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE Now STOP. Look at your goals again and consider the viewpoint from your target audience. WHY SHOULD THEY USE YOU? Adapt Step 1 so it appeals to your target audience and with respect to what they want – not what you are selling. What is your USP and are your target audience aware of how THEY could BENEFIT by using YOU?

STEP 3 – BUDGET Ascertain the appropriate budget and wherever possible, maximise FREE opportunities such as social media. During recession or difficult economic climates, many companies cut back on advertising and marketing. Some company owners erroneously believe it’s a good idea to slash this budget as a priority – BUT – how can potential clients know you’re still in business if they stop hearing about you or seeing your promotions? As the economy becomes stronger, it is important to have your business strategy in place before competitors resume their campaigns.

STEP 4 – CAMPAIGN Strategize your campaign and steer it from the clients’ perspective – not yours. Consider how you can use testimonials i.e. such as on LinkedIn and on your website to promote the benefits enjoyed by your clients as a result of your services or products.

STEP 5 – MARKETING TOOLS List your current marketing tools, i.e. website, brochures, leaflets, etc. Websites need to be fresh, interesting and regularly updated. is is for a multitude of reasons such as 1 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

(in part) SEO and to keep potential customers, returning to your website as either a point of interest or to buy. Websites can easily become stale and passé. Your website reflects the calibre of your services/products and company. ith regard to restaurants, coee shops and general pottering, George Lane has to be one of the liveliest. Whether a day-time stroll, evening revelry or simply adding a little adventure time to the weekly shop, it’s tempting and easy to just take life down a notch or two, whilst balancing a practical routine with some light relief. My preferred supermarket has to be Waitrose in South Woodford. Although not a particularly large store, it has what I need and I generally know where it is unlike Tesco, who always reshue their merchandise to lure you to unfamiliar products that you might have otherwise missed. Waitrose is a bit more predictable and comfortable. Plus if you have the My Waitrose card, there’s a free coee/tea in the cafĂŠ, a complimentary newspaper and monthly store magazine. It’s all the little bonus chips which enhance the shopping experience. However despite all its pluses there is one minor drawback. î “e queue for tea/coee/cappuccino has to be the slowest queue in town. At some point, I would even describe it as stagnant. It has its own, caterpillar pace and despite the flurry of activity behind the counter, for those who are impatient or particularly thirsty or hungry, please allow plenty of time along the same lines as catching a plane. î “e food is good, the cake portions are ample and I wouldn’t say the long wait was particularly warranted but if you have plenty of time, no deadline or rush to collect children, there is a certain decadence, to enjoying a light refreshment and cursory scan through the day’s papers during the working week. During my last visit, I decided to analyse why the queue was so long, why it moved so slowly and the general lack of dynamics. I observed the cluttering of coee equipment per coee as each customer is served individually, rather than taking a few orders +

simultaneously. Perhaps I wondered, this aorded each customer a unique beverage experience. However what I did notice and was not particularly impressed with - was the sugar arrangement on the counter. Brown and white cubes (separate) in an open jar with tongs. But customers were not always using the tongs and every now and again, an errant hurried customer would dare to put their paws – where tongs should have gone! Not happy with this arrangement, I asked a member of sta for a sachet. His blank and surprised expression at my request dissuaded an elegant persistence. A tad disappointed as I do prefer sweetened tea but the carrot cake’s (aka passion cake) sweetness more than made up for this sugary deficit. However all is not lost if you like your tea/coee sweetened. Upon leaving the store, I noticed a new coee stand to the left hand side of the Welcome counter and guess what‌ sachets of sugar as part of the display. So if you have time for tea/coee before/after your shopping expedition, perhaps pick up a sachet en route to the cafĂŠ or alternatively and as you have been forewarned, you can always bring your own. As a final note and referring to sweetness from one of my favourite books - î “e Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:

CHANGES AFOOT ON SAVILE ROW Behind the glossy black doors and elegant railings of Savile Row, tradition and heritage might be woven into the fabric of Savile Row suiting, but some select houses are re-working the template. Change and innovation has arrived on Savile Row, with institutions such as Hardy Amies and E.Tautz ushering the storied street into the 21st century.

S

ince a re-launch with the backing of private investment company Fung Capital in 2012, Hardy Amies has returned to Savile Row at No. 8, just a short stroll from No.14, the original Hardy Amies home where he would create pieces for the likes of Cary Grant and Queen Elizabeth II. Under Design Director Mehmet Ali, the brand has combined the house’s sense of quiet, dignified refinement with youthful nous; rich prints, contemporary silhouettes and a fine line in covetable accessories. In store, you’ll also find a range of “curated goods; accessories and charming curiosities from other British

brands that chime with the Hardy Amies ethos. The latest feather in the house’s cap is a Signature Bespoke service; a bridge between having an entirely bespoke suit crafted for you and the ease of ready-to-wear, a contemporary way to cater for a new generation of men who appreciate the finer points of suiting but don’t have the budget or patience to order fully bespoke. The service involves taking the measurements of the client, sifting through myriad stylistic elements (double or single-breasted, lining, lapel, etc) and then the pattern is crafted off-site in China. The work in progress is then returned for adjustments and tweaks,

with each stage of the process employing hand craft. Prices are from £2,200, with a choice of over 2000 fabric options available and a time frame of six weeks to create the suit. Aquascutum has announced the return of its bespoke arm, available at the store’s Great Marlborough Street and Jermyn Street from February, returning to its thoroughly British roots; bringing back made-to-measure suiting is the next step in the process. Like Hardy Amies, the brand will focus on suiting at more affordable price points, outsourcing production beyond London and instead looking abroad, this time to Portugal. Gieves & Hawkes, the tailoring institution boasting the most covetable address in all of tailoring, No.1 Savile Row, is celebrating its new store renovation. The William Kent townhouse, which boasts a full line-up of their military uniforms as well as their Royal family archive pieces, has been sympathetically updated by interior designer Teresa Hastings, with contemporary art, modern lighting and new flooring. Continuing the evolution of one of Churchill’s favourite tailors, historical house E. Tautz recently unveiled their new flagship store. With Patrick Grant at the helm, the house has become one of London Collections: Men’s biggest stories since it was re-

launched in 2009, and this new launch adds another chapter to the story. Spreading beyond Savile Row, the new store is situated on Duke Street housing a handsome, masculine space to showcase the brand’s elegant menswear, alongside a made-to-order cashmere service. The store sees the launch of a bespoke suiting service with a more demographic price point, with suits in British cloths available from ÂŁ795, alongside a new made-to-measure shirting and hand embroidery service (for the modern chap’s monogramming needs). And in a move that at one time would have been unheard of for an establishment tailor, the label are debuting a denim jeans range; casual but still adhering to the E. Tautz ethos of supporting UK craft – the jeans are sewn in Blackburn at a factory that’s made clothes for the British Army for over a century. Sometimes innovation comes in the most subtle of forms; this is the case at Anderson & Sheppard, the historical tailor that combines bespoke suiting with a “haberdasheryâ€? store devoted to particularly handsome ready-to-wear and accessories and now, an online store with international shipping. The difference in this is that the service isn’t a fast fashion operation; each piece is picked and packaged by Audie Charles, Anderson & Sheppard’s renowned style mistress and shipped off from the store’s Clifford Street basement.

The silver lining… WORDS BY DEE BROWN

A

my, of Takely, Essex was always known for her big beaming smile until one fateful evening in 2013. After a night out with friends, Amy fell and damaged both of her front teeth. Distraught, Amy turned to friend and Practice Manager Cheryl. After an emergency appointment with Ash the following morning, Amy left the practice with her teeth temporarily rebuilt using white filling material. For the following months Amy endured a roller coaster ride of emotion, losing her confidence when smiling and living in fear of losing her front teeth. After a detailed examination with Ash, Amy was provided with a thorough treatment plan to help restore her smile as well as her confidence. Like many, Amy was slightly nervous about visiting the dentist. "Previously I was always anxious about going to the Dentist, but as my treatment was caused by an accident, I had no choice but to have detailed treatment and surprisingly it was made as comfortable for me as possible. Even down to my music preference and a numbing cream used before injections, these small things helped me to feel totally at ease". Amy's thorough assessment revealed that she would need to have root canal treatment in order to save her front teeth before the restorative treatment could take place. After seeing Firas, our dentist with a special interest in root fillings, Amy could then proceed to have two beautiful porcelain crowns placed to help protect her broken down teeth. "I had an excellent experience at Smile Design by Ash. Ash and his team really went the extra mile to ensure I was comfortable and relaxed throughout my treatment. I was kept well informed of my options and Ash always took the time to explain procedures to me and answer any questions I had".

Ash and his team really went the extra mile to ensure I was comfortable and relaxed throughout my treatment. Amy has now moved on to bigger and better things in the Land of Oz. After completing her treatment Amy jetted off to beautiful Australia to live and work. e whole team would like to wish Amy the best of luck in her new adventure! ■

TOP TIPS FOR EATING OUT

HEALTHILY

H

ealthy eating is more than just the odd piece of fruit or low-fat meal - it’s a lifestyle. It can be difficult to be healthy all the time, especially when everyone else is enjoying themselves. Take a meal out at a restaurant, for instance; do you always go for the healthiest option? Read these tips to help you make healthier choices when you’re wining and dining.

Here are some tips for making healthy choices when eating out: Choose fruit-based starters and desserts; these will contribute to your recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Choose wholemeal bread rolls over white for the extra fibre, which can improve digestion and may be protective against bowel cancer. Vegetable-based soups are a great option as they are filling and contain less fat than cream-based soups. Likewise, choose tomato-based sauces over creambased ones; containing less fat and calories. Choose fish - white fish is extremely low in fat and is a great source of protein, while oily fish provides omega-3 fatty acids - a ‘good’ type of oil

which has been shown to help protect against heart disease and may help prevent cancer. Go for grilled or baked foods over fried or roasted. A grilled lean steak can be an excellent choice, providing a rich source of protein and iron. Swap ice-cream for refreshing sorbet. Watch your alcohol intake - while one or two drinks a day may be beneficial to health and could help protect against heart disease and osteoporosis, any more than this can have the opposite effect. Slimmers should also try to stick to one or two courses and watch portion size. Try not to add salt at the table - most foods will already have been seasoned. Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure. Always make sure you have a side order of vegetables or salad - more importantly, make sure you eat them! Finally, if you feel that there is something indulgent on the menu that you simply cannot resist despite your best intentions, don’t be too hard on yourself. Denial in the extreme can lead to binging in the long run. Why not order one portion with two spoons? Half the portion means half the fat, sugar and calories - ‘fancy sharing, anyone’?

As a young woman having dark circles and rings around my eyes was a big problem for me. Unfortunately I had inherited it from my parents, I felt it made me look tired and older than I actually was! I have spent a fortune since my early teens on eye creams and tons of industrial strength concealer, but nothing really helped. I had heard that dermal fillers could improve this area naturally. I had lots of concerns about the treatment and more importantly who could I trust. I was introduced to Frances by a friend. After my In-depth consultation, and time to digest all the information I decided to go for it. I am so happy with my results, the after care and the comments I get from others saying how well I look, I wish I had done this ages ago, it has changed my life and my confidence.

Changing PeoPles’ lives by ash parmar

review of 2014

home without an escort! To find out more, visit the NERVOUS PATIENTS section of our website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk.

Smile Design By Ash will celebrate its fourth anniversary in January 2015. I thought it would be good to reflect on some important highlights from 2014.

0% Financing available

Our associate Dentists One of the significant developments at our practice is that another dentist called Luk Athwal joined us and has settled down really well. Luk has a pleasant personality and is a caring dentist who aims for a high standard of dental treatment. Along with Jyoti, he will offer general dental care, whilst I focus on more advanced treatments and Smile Makeovers.

practice refurbishment We have had a small practice extension to create a new office for my Manager and better storage facilities. We have also developed a photography suite as we believe dental photography is a key to effective communication about the dental condition and analyzing a smile.

Looking ahead

Word of mouth Due to the excellent customer service we offer, I am pleased to say that over 60% of our new patients have been referred to us from our existing satisfied clients. is is testament to how we look after our patients by offering very good advice, great dentistry for long-lasting results and a special emphasis on how to PREVENT problems in the long run. I have also been pleased with the feedback we have had about our informative website which shows many before and after cases we have treated at our practice.

Nervous patients We have used Nucalm a lot in 2014. It is a great solution for anxious clients who are worried about having dental treatment of any type. Nucalm is a scientifically proven system that helps someone get relaxed within about 5 minutes. is puts them in a sleepy state, which then allows the dentist to get on with doing the dental treatment. At the end, the patient is ready to go

In 2014, many of our patients opted for financing their dental treatment. My first objective as a dentist is to listen carefully to a person’s goals and what they believe to be their main problems. I then aim to work out a treatment plan suited to that person’s budget, also guiding them on alternative treatment plans. e advantage of financing with our partnering company called Medenta is that patients can go ahead with the dental care they require straight away and pay in monthly installments over an extended period of time. ere are no penalties for early repayments, and my Patient Care Coordinator Dee quickly takes care of all matters.

Dentistry is changing fast. Today we have more aesthetic restorations that can last longer. However, the challenges are also increasing. People are living longer and keeping teeth for longer. Gum disease causes problems, as well as teeth wearing down due to grinding. e damage to teeth by acid in drinks, fruits as well as acid reflux from the stomach is an increasing challenge. Dentists may overlook this problem, and yet the repercussions are severe in the long-term. We take pride in our diagnostic ability and the accurate advice we offer. So, if you or a family member are worried about the dental health, or indeed need good advice about the best cosmetic solution to improve your smile for increased confidence, then feel free to arrange a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION. Quote LIFEJAN2015, and we will be happy to take a scanning X-ray and digital photographs (worth £125) free of charge. We can give you a practice tour, let you meet our Team and a dentist, and give you guidance on treatment solutions for your main problems. Experience the difference and then decide who you really want to look after you going forwards… ■ www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk Tel: 020 85000544

BOXERCISE/KICKBOXERCISE Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use the drills and techniques of their respective sports in a non-contact setting, usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shadowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape. One study found that people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious after a kickboxing class. Taking out all that aggression on a punch bag can be a great stress reliever! CIRCUIT TRAINING Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one after the other, with a short rest in between. Exercises vary, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as push-ups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a very effective way of improving aerobic fitness.

IN A CLASS

OF THEIR OWN

Looking for another way to keep

PILATES Pilates is a form of exercise which works on restoring correct posture and alignment (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joints, and working particularly strongly on the abdominals and back. The movement exercises are very precise, focused and controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context. DANCE Dance classes are a lot of fun and very sociable – plus the high concentration factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’, on not if you are spending half the class trying to figure out which way to spin or how to shimmy. That said, there are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang of one of them. Ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsa aerobics won’t give you the skills to take to the floor like a dance champion, but what they will do, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’. YOGA Yoga strengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility, and enhances balance, coordination and posture through a series of diverse poses (or ‘asanas’).There are many types of yoga. For example, ashtanga yoga is more energetic than viniyoga. Yoga works on the whole body without favouring one side, and includes forward and backward bending, twists, balances and inversions.Movements are coordinated with the breath. Different types of yoga have very different focuses and approaches – so it’s best to watch a class or speak to the instructor before you take part. ZUMBA Originating from Latin dance styles, Zumba is a cardiovascular and aerobic exercise routine that infuses exercise with dance and choreography. The workout alternates between fastpaced and slow-paced dance moves which are practiced in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance form’s influences are salsa, hip-hop and rumba. This South American workout tones the body through its use of resistance exercises which effectively amount to interval training due to the varying speeds at which they are carried out.

DETOX FOODS

Over-indulging on food and alcohol together with late nights over Christmas and New Year, can make you feel bloated, tired, or perhaps you have even put on a pound or two. LEMON Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system. GINGER If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the

immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice. GARLIC Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time. ARTICHOKE If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. IGNITE THEIR IMAGINATIONS – WITH A PLAYHOUSE –

A

playhouse is every child’s dream. A place to call their own, where they can let their imaginations run wild away from the grown-ups! is is what Erica and David Llewellyn wanted for their three year old daughter Phoebe. “We had always wanted a playhouse for Phoebe, so as soon as we thought she was old enough to enjoy and appreciate one we started the search,” explains Erica. “We found e Playhouse Company on the Internet and after looking through its range of beautiful houses we settled on a design. Once we had chosen the house we then had to decide where to put it and as our garden is quite uneven it was difficult

“e team back at e Playhouse Company headquarters were also extremely helpful, offering advice on the many different colours and finishes we could choose from. We have an old copper beech tree, as well as an abundance of purple flowering plants so we wanted the colour of the playhouse to compliment these. e colour we finally chose, purple with cream doors and window frames and white guttering, is the perfect partner for our garden, but is also colourful enough for Phoebe,” adds Erica. Phoebe’s “Bay Tree Cottage” took around two weeks to hand-build at e Playhouse Company’s factory in Herefordshire. It then took just over one day to install into the Llewellyn’s back garden.

A playhouse is the perfect present which will last for years rather than days. to find the perfect place. However, we needn’t have worried. Richard Frost, CEO of e Playhouse Company, came to visit us to assess our garden and the suitability of various sites.” By visiting Erica’s garden Richard was not only able to advise on where best to place their chosen playhouse but he was also able to make a few suggestions, which eventually turned their standard playhouse into one with the “wow” factor! Erica continues, “Our only stipulation was that we wanted the playhouse to have two floors, with an external staircase that went to the upper floor. After walking around our garden and inspecting various locations, Richard suggested building the playhouse around an existing old tree and incorporating the tree into the design of the playhouse – it was a fantastic idea!” e final design was a two story “cottage” style playhouse with a front “stable” door, two downstairs windows and two beautifully crafted dormer windows on the second floor. e exterior staircase wound its way around the tree to the upper floor and led to another “stable” door at the side of the house. A swing was also hung underneath the steps to add another point of interest to the playhouse. 5 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

“It was raining heavily on the day of the installation but that did not deter Richard and his team. e playhouse went up in little over day and as soon as the rain stopped Phoebe had explored her new house and moved in quite a few of her toys! She takes great pride in her “tree house” as she calls it! “We absolutely love our new playhouse. Not only is it somewhere to inspire Phoebe and encourage her to use her imagination, but it also blends beautifully into our garden without being intrusive,” concludes Erica. Richard Frost, CEO of e Playhouse Company, adds, “A playhouse is the perfect present which will last for years rather than days. ey entice children away from the television and help to ignite their imaginations in a way that computer games and TV programmes just cannot.” ■

7 BEST OF THE

A

ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself well-groomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh. TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as we embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones - this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture, as

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS

over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Easterninspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, oneoff pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters.

Here are the key interior trends that you may want to think about incorporating quilted fabrics and leather became big news. This trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape 5 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS Things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

SHADES OF GREY

F

ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone, advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge. FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they

change with the light in your home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.

SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

Grey is full of surprises and wonÂ’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

built on reputation

J

ohn Bray, Director of Edward Taub & Co gives Life Magazines a view of his business now that they have moved in to their new offices in Buckhurst Hill and how 2015 is likely to be. Since 1995, when they first opened their doors Edward Taub & Co have built an excellent reputation for quality, personal service and have established themselves as one of the most reputable and successful property agents in the area. 20 years on and they have just moved to new, larger, ‘state of the art’ offices, still in Queens Road, where, with room to expand the business and services of providing professional letting and property management, together with bespoke sales service, they can keep up with the increased demand. Edward Taub cover all of the local areas one would expect an agent to deal with from Buckhurst Hill but do not allow themselves to be restricted by borders. ey have rented properties in the last year out as far as Old Harlow, through East Ham as well as Maida Vale and Marylebone in London’s West End. An area of London they are also keen to expand in in 2015 John says: “Over the past few years supply has been outstripped by demand making a strong and attractive market for landlords. With the change in stamp duty we expect to see that the number of investment landlords will increase, as around the £250,000 region is where the best savings are to be had making smaller one and two bedroom flats in the local area a very attractive purchase.” John also points out that landlords should be aware that Waltham Forest Council, from this spring are the first Borough in locally to introduce compulsory licensing. All landlords with a property in this borough must comply and pay a fee for a five 6 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

year period. It will be an interesting experiment and an indication as to whether other local boroughs are likely to follow suit.’ John’s opinion about the next two quarters of the year for buyers and tenants: “Don’t drag your heels be decisive, there is a shortage of stock on the market for both sale and rent, purchasers and prospective tenants should be willing to consider a compromise. If the property you are viewing ticks most of the boxes move quickly. You might miss out and regret it if you don’t! “It will be interesting to see what effect the stamp duty changes will have on the sales market in 2015. My view is that it will be positive for homeowners looking to move, as this will give them potential savings in the overall cost of buying their property.”

for landlords? “Don’t commit to the first tenant that shows an interest. Take the best tenant. Ask relevant questions with regards to affordability, how long they want to rent for etc and see that this suits your plans. is makes for a good start to the landlord and tenant relationship and is something we always ask when vetting a tenant for one of our landlords as well of course carrying out our normal reference checks.”

If you are sellIng? “Listen to any advice given to you by your agent that may make your property stand out, maximise the price and its desirability. Just because we are in a fluid market doesn’t mean it will automatically sell. ey do say location, location, location however never forget presentation. Look at your property through the eyes of a prospective purchaser. De-clutter, tidy and make good where necessary. ese things will increase your chance of selling quickly and for the right price. “Happy Selling, Happy Letting and Happy New Year!” ■

pen plan loft spaces, exposed brick walls and arched dormer windows - we all recognise these as the hallmarks of trendy East London homes, offering an industrial style hard to find outside of London’s E1 and E2 postcodes. With style comes prices to match and currently the average price in the Shoreditch area sits at a hefty £832psf, with average asking prices for a two bedroom flat £635,135. City & Country, newly crowned WhatHouse? Housebuilder of the Year, however has a seriously attractive solution. A limited number of outstanding loft apartments are currently for sale at e Galleries; a stylish range of historic restoration properties located in the buildings of the former Grade II Listed Warley hospital, Brentwood. Here the average price is almost 52% less at £395psf. e Tudor-influenced Victorian red brick buildings were built in 1853 and have been expertly renovated by City & Country’s in house team into stunning modern apartments with original features. e converted apartments form part of the hospital’s original clock tower and offer exceptionally large living spaces, ranging from 1013 sq ft to 1356 sq ft. One of the three exclusive apartments also boasts a private balcony and is ready to move into. e apartments feature trendy internal red brick walls and unique exposed roof trusses, juxtaposed with eye-catching 8 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 15

contemporary interiors including kitchen islands, sleek appliances and stylish modern bathrooms. Residents’ further benefit from access to the beautifully landscaped courtyard gardens, which are kept in pristine condition by a management company and the 400-acre country forest at the edge of the town is an ideal place for weekend leisure. e lively town centre of Brentwood and the station is a short walk from the development, offering a direct service into London Liverpool Street of just over 30 minutes, allowing city workers a simple commute avoiding the hassle of the Central Line. e station will also form part of the new Crossrail line, which when complete will seamlessly connect West and East London, further enhancing the area’s attraction. Savvy investors have already caught on to this hidden secret, as current owner Aaron Wright, a city worker, explains: “My property is undoubtedly the ultimate bachelor pad, although it will also serve perfectly as a spacious family home. I bought it knowing that it would prove a sound investment; the area is growing in popularity with London commuters and soon there will be the added Crossrail train connections, which will inevitably force prices up.”. ■

booking info Prices for the loft apartments at The Galleries start at £420,000. For further information call 01277 202 122 or visit: www.cityandcountry.co.uk
