Maternity discrimination – know your rights Becoming a parent is a unique and life changing experience and one of life’s greatest events. However, some employers discriminate against new mothers. The law regarding maternity rights is very clear, and it’s important to be aware of these key rights. So what are your key rights? • Up to 52 weeks maternity leave; • Paid time off for antenatal appointments. Your partner can come too but whether this is paid or not depends on their employer’s policy; • Your employment, and any non-cash benefits, continue while you are on maternity leave – for example, you can keep your mobile phone and company car; • Your holiday entitlement continues to accrue whilst you are on maternity leave. If you are unable to take your remaining holiday days in the current leave year because of your maternity leave, you should ask for these days to be carried over into the next leave year; • If a redundancy situation arises whilst you are off, you have the right to be prioritised for any suitable alternative vacancies. You don’t have automatic protection from redundancy, but your pregnancy and/or maternity leave should not be a factor in determining whether you are at risk; • If you take up to 26 weeks of maternity leave, you have the right to return to the same job (unless you have been made redundant); • Following more than 26 weeks of maternity leave you have a right to return to the same job unless you have been made redundant or it is not reasonably practicable to return
to your former job, in which case you should be offered a suitable and appropriate alternative • Before, during or after maternity leave, you can make a flexible working request provided you have 26 weeks’ service. Your employer must consider this fairly but they don’t have to agree to it. They should give reasons for any refusal and these should relate to one or more of the eight legally prescribed reasons, such as the burden of additional costs, impact on performance, work quality and/or service delivery. You have a right to appeal a negative decision. If your employer is not sure whether to grant a request or not, you may suggest a trial period; • You are also entitled to reasonable time off once you return to work to deal with any unexpected events (such as your child’s nursery closing suddenly due to bad weather). Whether this is paid or unpaid depends on your employer’s policy. Unfortunately, this does not mean you are automatically entitled to time off if your child is sick but it does allow you reasonable time off to sort alternative childcare arrangements; and • You should not be subjected to unfavourable treatment, detriment or dismissed because of your sex, pregnancy, maternity leave, pregnancy related illness and/or breastfeeding.
Am I being discriminated against? Examples of circumstances where you could have a claim for maternity discrimination are: • Being dismissed before you are due to return to work because the person covering your maternity is deemed “better”; • If you are overlooked for promotion because you are on maternity leave;
Authorised and Regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
• If your pregnancy and/or maternity leave impacts negatively on any salary review and in certain cases on any bonus; • You are not consulted about changes to your role and/or redundancy because you are on maternity leave; • Negative comments are made to you about pregnancy and/or the time off you have taken; • Changes are made to your role on your return without your agreement, for example, key clients/accounts are not returned, you have changes to your reporting line or managerial responsibilities or you are allocated different work in a way that impacts on your salary/status.
What should I do if I have been treated unfairly? Seek legal advice as soon as possible. If you are thinking of taking legal action, there is a very short timeframe of three months within which to take steps to bring an Employment Tribunal claim and it does not matter that you have been on maternity leave or have been trying to resolve things yourself. Ideally, the sooner you are informed about your rights, the sooner you can achieve a positive resolution that enables you to return to work (or to negotiate exit terms if that’s preferable).

Rare Designer Bags: Inside Out exhibition at the V&a Museum. opens 21 november 2020 Nicholas Knightly, the Bayswater unites the best of Mulberry’s craft skills and heritage influences. Supermodel Kate Moss was one of the first celebrity fans and has carried many different styles and colours over the years - including the example that will feature in the exhibition. The Alexa, launched in 2010, was inspired by British style icon Alexa Chung who was often photographed carrying a Mulberry Elkington satchel. This caught the eye of Mulberry and Chung’s chic style influenced the shape and leather choices for this new bag. Bags that will also feature include a large embroidered burse used to protect the silver matrix of Elizabeth I’s Great Seal of England, a gas mask bag owned by HRH Queen Mary during World War II, Winston Churchill’s red despatch box and the Fendi ‘Baguette’ bag worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in one of Sex and the City’s most famous scenes.

he first-ever made Hermès Birkin bag owned by Jane Birkin and Mulberry handbags worn by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung will join almost 300 standout pieces in the V&A’s next fashion exhibition Bags: Inside Out. The exhibition will be UK’s most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the ultimate accessory. From designer handbags to despatch boxes, vanity cases to military rucksacks, it will explore our long standing fascination with the bag. Actress and singer Jane Birkin and the former executive chairman of Hermès Jean-Louis Dumas met on a flight from Paris to London. Jane complained that she could not find a bag suitable to carry her belongings and to fit her needs as a young mother. Dumas sketched on an aeroplane sickness-bag a supple rectangular holdall with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. The bag named after Jane, became a sensation appealing to women looking for something spacious and fashionable. The ‘Birkin’ has since become an undeniable symbol of wealth and luxury. The Mulberry Bayswater is one of the brand’s most iconic handbags, as popular today as it was when it launched in 2003. Designed by

he folks at Silent Pool Gin have been rather busy of late. Travelling the globe in search of the world’s rarest and most intriguing citrus fruits to grace their new gin - the first major launch under the Silent Pool Gin brand since that iconic teal and copper bottle first burst onto the craft gin scene back in 2014. So cue a not-sosilent fanfare for Silent Pool Rare Citrus Gin. They may have taken a path less travelled to arrive at this alluring new gin but one sip and you realise that the destination is every bit as rewarding as the journey. This wonderfully complex spirit balances bright and zesty with subtly sweet, beautifully aromatic and delicately spiced for a truly satisfying taste experience.
18 NOVEMBER 2020
But what’s so rare about the citrus? Well on their journey to locate the finest citrus fruits, the team at Silent Pool Distillers searched the globe and eventually unearthed two renowned citrus collectors who share their relentless passion for creativity and excellence. Leaving their busy lives and careers in Paris in 2001, Ann and Jean Paul Brigand moved to the gorgeous Alentejo coast in Portugal and set about building their home, Lugar do Olhar Feliz. The duo has a particular passion for citrus and have made it their mission to help young Portuguese farmers and chefs (and bartenders, of course) to discover and fall in love with citrus as they have done. Now boasting a citrus collection of more than 300 varieties imported from the far flung corners

of the planet (Yes you read right, 300!) Ann and Jean Paul have one of the largest and finest citrus collections in the world. When Silent Pool Distillers visited their citrus grove, it far exceeded all expectations. Head Distiller Tom Hutchings says ‘We were just blown away by what we found. Hundreds of the rarest and most incredible citrus. The aromas and tastes were like nothing we’d experienced before’. The team sampled dozens of citrus varieties before selecting the most interesting and aromatic flavours to take back to the distillery to begin formulating their distinctive new gin. After much recipe development the team settled on four lead varieties. Inside the zesty tipple you’ll find Buddha’s hand, Green Seville Orange, Natsu Dai Dai (a hybrid of orange and pomelo), and lastly, Hirado Buntan (a type of pomelo). Not an easy task balancing all those different types of citrus in the final distillation. How have they done it you ask? The distillers have adopted the same bespoke 4-stage production approach used to create Silent Pool Gin to produce remarkable layers of ever-changing flavour.
The result? A masterfully distilled and beautifully aromatic gin with a unique taste. Call this a flavoured gin though and Head Distiller Tom Hutchings will wince. ‘Please don’t mention the F word. As with Silent Pool Gin, this is a naturally distilled gin where all the flavours are captured in the distillation itself with no artificial colourings or flavour compounds added in afterwards. We’re passionate about making proper gins in the right way. This is a naturally distilled gin with oodles of classic juniper to be enjoyed, complemented with wonderfully complex layers of citrus and spice’. If that hasn’t got your mouth watering, we spoke to the team at the surrey-hills based distillery to ask how best to enjoy this rare citrus gin. So here are five different ways to enjoy this lovely new gin. silentpooldistillers.com

SAVING FOR YOUR RETIREMENT
S
o much has changed this year. Many of us thought that Covid-19 would be a short term hindrance to our lifestyles, and that by summer we would be back to normal, looking back with hindsight on a difficult few months. Instead we are still living under unprecedented changes, restricted about who we can socialise with, and where we can go. The point of this little trip down memory lane is in part to remind ourselves of how much we have all had to deal with over this period, but also to highlight something that may have understandably slipped under the radar when it comes to planning on how to fund your retirement. Since the beginning of the 2016/17 tax year, the maximum amount that can be paid into an individual’s pension has been reduced for high earners. This is known as the Tapered Annual Allowance. Up until the beginning of the current tax year on 6 April 2020, the definition of ‘high earner’ in this context had remained consistent. However the boundaries for high earners increased at the beginning of this tax year, meaning that individuals with a total remuneration between £150,000 and £300,000 can now potentially pay more into pensions than they could for each of the previous four tax years. There is, unfortunately, also a downside to the revised legislation, with the maximum reduction or tapering of an individual’s Annual Allowance also increasing from £30,000 (giving an allowance of £10,000) to £36,000 (giving an allowance of just £4,000). To help understand this, there are some examples below showing the impact of these changes. 1. Chloe Essex has a total remuneration (earnings and income) of £240,000. This includes her gross
20 NOVEMBER 2020
Matt Merchant tells us about changes to Pension Annual Allowances
salary and employer pension contributions, as well as some rental income from another property she owns. In the 2019/20 tax year, her Annual Allowance for pension contributions would have been fully reduced or tapered down to £10,000. However, in the 2020/21 tax year following the new rules, Chloe’s Annual Allowance would be the full allowance of £40,000. 2. If Chloe’s total remuneration was instead £340,000, again including her gross salary, employer pension contributions and rental income, her Annual Allowance in 2019/20 would also have been the fully tapered or reduced allowance of £10,000. In the 2020/21 tax year, she would again have a fully tapered Annual Allowance for her pension contributions, but this now would reduce down to £4,000. As with any change to legislation or allowances there are always going to winners and losers, as shown by the examples above. But it is important to remember that pension planning for high earners is a complex area of Financial Planning, and it is advisable to include both your Financial Adviser and Tax Adviser in discussions surrounding this area of advice. It may be that you cannot pay as much into your pension this year as you thought, so could be facing an Annual Allowance charge. Alternatively you may be more aligned to example A, with the ability to contribute more than you expected. Either way if you are thinking about ways to maximise your pension contributions, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Financial Advisers for a no obligation introductory chat.

AN ACADEMIC & NURTURING ENVIRONMENT Focus on 11+ at Braeside and Normanhurst schools
B
raeside School in Buckhurst Hill, currently for girls only, and the mixed Normanhurst School in North Chingford both cater for pupils from 2½ to 16. Between them, they make up half of the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of independent schools and provide excellent education and pastoral care. We talk to Claire Osborn, Group Education Principal, about the schools’ strengths teaching pupils from Kindergarten all the way up to Year 11, and the journey through 11+ exams. Q: As ‘all through schools’, what are the benefits of Braeside and Normanhurst taking children from 2½ to 16? A:It is very unusual to find small, local schools that offer the ‘all through’ experience in an academic, yet nurturing environment – and we have two within our Group! They provide the opportunity for a continuity of education from nursery to juniors to seniors with smaller class sizes that allow for more personalised learning programmes tailor-made to each individual child. Most of the pupils who move from our Year 6 classes into our seniors at 11+ have been with us since starting in the Early Years at age 3 or 4, so we already know them extremely well. This allows us to provide outstanding pastoral care, understand their academic abilities and ensure that their progression is smooth, while the pupils feel a sense of belonging and support. Q: How were your recent GCSE Results at Braeside and Normanhurst? A: We were delighted with both sets of GCSE results
this year, which were a testament to our pupils’ hard work and commitment as well as the dedication and expertise of their teachers, despite the difficult circumstances faced nationwide. The pandemic, cancellation of exams and consequent uncertainties about GCSE results set unusual challenges. We were delighted, however, with how positive, focused and calm our pupils remained. At Braeside School, nearly half the grades were at least grades 7, 8 or 9, and 96% were passes at grade 4 or above. At Normanhurst, half of the grades were at least grades 7, 8 and 9 and 99% were passes. Q: What happens at 11+ for pupils who join Braeside and Normanhurst from the outside? A: Although many of our Year 7 pupils move up through the school from the juniors, many also join us from local independent or state schools. There are joint entrance exams in January and March, and each pupil is interviewed, either in person or virtually, before places are offered. The induction process is smooth and our existing Year 7 pupils are friendly and accommodating to help make the transition as seamless and reassuring as possible. Q: How have you been managing to keep the education at the schools running during current pandemic? A: Since the first closures in March, we have been investing heavily in a number of online platforms that are used throughout the Group. These will help us to continue teaching even if we have to move to our remote home-learning programmes. In addition, we have timetables of live online lessons in place with all of our teachers so that our pupils can keep learning and making progress.
24 NOVEMBER 2020
11+ and 13+ Entrance Exams are held at both Braeside and Normanhurst on Tuesday 19 January and Wednesday 10 March 2021. Contact the schools directly to register.

ADVENT CALENDAR
What a topsy-turvy year it has been for us all. The summer sun is now a faded memory and Christmas shopping feels like an even bigger challenge this year. Lockdown gave me the chance to find some small, ethical companies, whose gorgeous products sit alongside special items from trusted favourites. So here is my take on the ‘Advent Calendar’ that I am certain will put smiles on faces. I hope I’ve made life a little easier for you.

harp, contemporary, and always evolving: since its very beginnings, the Emporio Armani line has offered a dynamic, urban aesthetic. The Icon collection was born from the idea of creating a hub within the hub that is Emporio Armani: a selection of iconic pieces for men and women, updated in both materials and shapes, that tell the story of the brand. For women, research into materials and shapes finds expression in an array of pieces that naturally capture the moment but are also timeless classics. Comfortable trouser suits, long overcoats, nappa leather blazers and jackets, blouses, petite shorts and a feminine tailcoat (worn with a short top hat) create a characterful wardrobe with bold, modern flair, while the reinvented logo features on T-shirts and jumpers. For men, there are quintessential Emporio Armani styles, like overcoats, sweatshirts and T-shirts featuring the unmistakable brand eagle. Navy blue is the dominating colour. The collection is available now in select Emporio Armani Stores retailers including Harrods & Selfridges and at armani.com

Chilli No. 5 - Hot Sauce Reimagined
JOIN THE REVOLUTION
H
ot sauce has been reimagined courtesy of Chilli No. 5, a new gourmet chilli sauce company. Launched in October, Chilli No. 5 offers a collection of 13 designer hot sauces that not only taste great, but contain superfoods with reported health benefits. Inspired by international cuisines from across the globe, hot sauce lovers can add depth of flavour and heat to a wide range of dishes. Tempting hot sauces include Wicked Wasabi, Perfect Piri Piri, Jamaican Jerk, Sriracha Cha-ChaCha, Heavenly Harissa, Forever Phall, and Chinese Hot & Sour, to name just a few. Each sauce is made with only the very finest ingredients from across the globe, and also features an exclusive blend of five chillies and six powerful supplements – inulin, maca powder, red ginseng, L-Arginine, guarana, and fenugreek. The supplements have been purposefully handpicked due to their wide range of reported health benefits, from helping to boost energy, to aiding weight loss or easing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Adding further health credentials, the hot sauces also boast a plethora
48 noVEMb E r 2020
of superfoods such as black garlic, fresh ginger, nutmeg, and apple cider vinegar. They are also vegan, wheat free, and are free from any artificial colourings or flavourings.
Motivated by the lockdown Chilli No. 5 is the brainchild of Monaco entrepreneur Rumble Romagnoli and superyacht chef Colin Ross. The dynamic duo complement each other perfectly. Romagnoli is an established business entrepreneur and successful marketer for luxury brands, while Ross is a pedigree chef who has catered to the world’s most discerning palates on luxury superyachts across the globe. The inspiration for the brand came during the height of the pandemic. Forced to remain at home during lockdown, Romagnoli quickly became frustrated that he was unable to create the depth of flavours typically found in restaurant dishes. And with lots of hungry mouths to feed – Romagnoli is a father to three demanding underfives – creating tasty, healthy meals at home was quickly becoming a frustrating challenge. It was Romagnoli’s lightbulb moment. “I founded Chilli No. 5 because it was
“Each sauce is made with only the very finest ingredients from across the globe, and also features an exclusive blend of five chillies and six powerful supplements”
impossible to find high-quality, healthy, sustainable hot chilli sauces at the supermarket,” Romagnoli explained. “This became even more apparent during lockdown. People were cooking more at home than they had for years and were discovering how challenging it was to recreate their favourite bold flavours.” But, simply creating incredible tasting hot sauces wasn’t enough for the dynamic entrepreneur. “I didn’t want our sauces to be just about incredible flavour,” Romagnoli explained. “I wanted them to be much more than that. I wanted to make sure they were made with only the very finest ingredients as well as being as healthy as possible. So, we made sure to add natural superfoods known to contain powerful antioxidants, along with a selection of supplements. With our designer hot sauces, we aim to offer more for those who wish to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.”
“It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible”
Sustainable principles Not only did Romagnoli want to create a luxury hot sauce brand that boasted incredible tasting hot sauces, but he also wanted to ensure that the newly founded company placed a high value on sustainability. Each designer hot sauce is available in an elegant 200 ml keepsake glass bottle, which can be refilled courtesy of lightweight 100 ml recyclable stand-up pouches.
The considerable benefit of glass packaging is that it offers a closed-loop recycling process, meaning it can be recycled again-and-again helping to minimise the use of earth’s precious natural resources. The stand-up refillable pouches are land-fill friendly and 6x more sustainable than a plastic bottle. “We all must do what we can to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce waste,” Romagnoli said. “It was important to both myself and chef Colin that we not only created tasty and healthy hot sauces, but ones that were packaged in the most environmentally friendly way possible.” He added: “In addition to earth-friendly packaging, we have gone one step further by offering a money-back programme to customers who return the refillable pouches or glass bottles, which will then be sent for recycling.” In addition to the full-sized glass bottles and pouches, Chilli No. 5 also offers numerous gift collections, with each sauce housed in a refillable glass test tube, or vial. “Not only are our hot sauce gift set collections a great way to try a selection of our hot sauces, but the vials are also designed to be compact enough to be carried around while on the go. So, with our vials you can always elevate any dish, even if it is a working lunch while at your desk,” Romagnoli explained. Chill No. 5 hot sauces will be sold on the Chilli No.5 website and through Instagram and Facebook, alongside exclusive sauce tasting/gifting collections and merchandising. The sauces are also available through a subscription programme; The Sauce of Life. “Chilli No. 5 is here to make your life more delicious, exciting, and extraordinary,” Romagnoli said “it really is Chilli Saucery. Join the Revolution.” noVEMb E r 2020 49

Introducing
HOLLYOAK HOUSE Originally occupied by the Royal Mail, Hollyoak House is the perfect retirement development
H
ollyoak House is a retirement development located in Loughton, Essex comprising 29 one- and two-bedroom private apartments, each with a private terrace or balcony. Homeowners benefit from living in a secure gated community with beautifully landscaped communal areas as well as a spacious resident’s club lounge, a luxurious guest suite, on-site management, on-site secure parking, mobility scooter storage and lift access to all floors. Prices at Hollyoak House start from £395,000 up to £550,000. John & Jenny Dessauer have recently moved into Hollyoak House and speak about what they love about the development and their private apartment: “We chose Hollyoak House as the location, was everything we would need as we get older. It is on
the High Street with its cafes and restaurants, its choice of shops and importantly nearby supermarkets. It’s in close proximity to Epping Forest for lovely walks, there is a bus stop directly outside and the underground station with the Central Line station is very advantageous as being able to still visit new places remains important to us. Security was also an added factor when looking for our future home – Hollyoak House has a secure gate which was very reassuring, even more so for those living on their own. We believe that living here will give us a sense of security and enable independent living in a supportive community. Since moving in we are thrilled with our apartment which is even more spacious than we expected and have especially enjoyed the three garden terraces as each receives the sun at different times of the day. They are much appreciated by those of us who have given up gardens. The apartments and landscaping provides a feeling of space – which is important especially for residents that have moved from house to single storey living. We have met with other residents as they have moved in at our informal coffee mornings. The House Manager, Nick Beasley has been very friendly and helpful and he is always on hand to assist with any queries we may have. 50 NOVEMBER 2020

CAPED CRUSADERS:
How this timeless classic can transform your autumn wardrobe Prudence Wade takes a look back at the history of the cape, and how it’s being styled today.
I
nstead of moping over the end of summer, cheer yourself up by adding a bit of autumnal drama into your wardrobe. And what better way to do so than with a cape? Capes are the perfect option for confusing, in between weather – they drape delicately over the shoulders, and can be adjusted according to temperature. Like any other trend, the style has fluctuated in and out of fashion – and this autumn, it’s set to be one of the biggest trends in outerwear. But before looking at why everyone from Dior to Celine have fallen back in love with capes, it’s important to understand the style’s history…
EARLY BEGINNINGS… Now, capes might seem modern and fresh, but the style certainly has a storied past. Over the years, it’s proved a uniquely democratic item of clothing, worn by people of all social statuses. This could be down to its simplicity – all that’s required is a single piece of material, fastened at the throat. Peasants, clergy and nobles alike have worn cloaks from the Roman era through to medieval times and onwards, but all styled slightly differently. After all, not quite everyone could afford the opulent, fur-lined, trailing capes of Henry VIII – peasants were far more likely to fling a length of scratchy sack cloth over their shoulders for warmth.
DIFFERENT MANIFESTATIONS THROUGHOUT THE 20TH CENTURY… Fashion hasn’t been immune to the charms of a cape. It saw a particular resurgence in popularity in the 1920s, when upper-class women realised it could be more easily worn over their full-skirted dresses than a coat. The 1960s saw another manifestation of capes, this time styled into brightly-coloured rain jackets by designers like Mary Quant. Again in the Seventies, poncho styles with intricate knitting 52 noVEMb E r 2020
and patterns became all the rage among hippies – something Burberry brought back in the 2010s with the help of models like Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne.
CAPES TODAY… Over the last decade, the place you’re most likely to see a cape is the red carpet. The past year alone has seen the Duchess of Sussex wearing a caped fire-engine red evening gown, and Angelina Jolie’s flowing, ethereal outfit for the Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil premiere. There’s something about the drama of a cape, which can be swished around as you leave a room, that makes it perfect for the red carpet. Other than the odd Burberry poncho, capes haven’t been hugely popular in fashion outside of formalwear: until now. The autumn/winter catwalks were full of cloaks, showing just how many ways they can be worn with inspirations plucked from different eras. One of the most wearable ways to style a cape this season is all about keeping things classic in sleek camel colours with gold accents, as seen on the Celine runway. Seventies fashion is still having a moment, and Miu Miu made its cape out of the 1970s favourite of shearling – adding texture and warmth to the style. Dior and Roland Mouret combined capes with another big trend of the season – check – which will no doubt prove just as timeless as camel styles. Another popular style is – gasp – actually practical for the changeable weather. Waterproof,
utility-style capes – often with zips, hoods and pockets – show you can be chic and practical at the same time. For a more Gothic take on the trend, go for a simple and chic charcoal grey style – as seen at Michael Kors and the Dior front row. The best thing about capes is how easy they are to style. You barely need to think about the rest of your outfit, because tossing over a cape will lend an easy elegance – not to mention some much-needed warmth. If you are stuck, we particularly like cloaks worn with skinny jeans and boots – to keep everything streamlined, making the cape the star of the show. Throughout history, capes have been worn by all manner of people – and this year, high end and high street designers show there really are no limits to how you wear yours. Although there is one restriction – no arms, please.
“It saw a particular resurgence in popularity in the 1920s, when upper-class women realised it could be more easily worn over their fullskirted dresses than a coat”

RAInboW nAILS:
this season’s hottest mani trend Why settle for one nail polish shade when you can have five? Katie Wright finds out more.
N
ot that long ago, the idea of wearing more than one nail polish colour at any one time was deeply unfashionable. While nail lengths and shapes may have evolved, one uniform shade across your fingertips was the norm, and anything else was seen as, well, a bit tacky. But now, the rule book has been well and truly thrown out the window and ‘rainbow nails’, featuring five shades (or more) are everywhere. When you think about it, it’s not surprising that multicoloured manicures have become the biggest nail trend of 2020. If ever there was a year that needed brightening up – in whatever way possible – it’s this one, and painting your nails with a range of pretty polishes is a quick way to lift your mood on dreary days. It’s also the sort of trend you want to show off on Instagram, and the influx of #rainbownails posts happened to coincide with the reopening of many nail salons, resulting in lots of requests for multi-hued manis. So, how do you get the rainbow nails look at home? First of all, it’s important to note that in spite of the name, this trend actually veers away from the traditional seven colours of the rainbow. Instead, it’s about choosing a spectrum of five shades that go beautifully together, whether that’s pastels, neons or rich jewel tones. Alternatively, you might want to create a kind of ombre effect, by choosing one colour – say pink – and painting each ORLY PASSION FRUIT NAIL nail a different shade, from pastel to POLISH, £8.95, AVAILABLE FROm NAILPOLISHDIREcT fuchsia. If you’re feeling really creative, you could take a white nail polish and NAILS INc WALkER’S mix up your own shades, from light cOURT, £11, AVAILABLE FROm SUPERDRUg to dark, by varying the amount of white you add. Another way to try the trend – as seen on Kylie Jenner – is to do a colourful twist on the French manicure, by painting just the tips of your nails with bright shades, and leaving the rest nude.

Katie Wright reveals the key looks of the season ahead.
A
utumn is here, and that means it’s all change in the fashion and beauty departments, as we wave goodbye to summer and say hello to the newseason collections. The AW20 catwalks brought us a bounty of fabulous hair and make-up looks, and there’s something to suit everyone – from sparkle and shimmer to moody hues, and the re-emergence of some classic techniques. Here are the most important beauty trends of the season…
Metallic shine Another look that’s destined for the dance floor, mirror-like flashes were a favourite at London Fashion Week, with models at Preen, Simone Rocha and Erdem all adorned with metallic foils. In shades of silver, gold and red, the chocolate wrapper-like textures were placed in an abstract manner, giving an antique, worn-in vibe.
Winged eyeliner Mastered the feline flick? Then it’s time to take it up a notch with one of the edgy black winged liner looks seen on the catwalks, from the cut crease flick at Stella McCartney, to the bold double-wing designs at Valentino and Miu Miu. Alternatively, the crisp mini-wing at Richard Quinn is a good starting point for newbies.
golden eyes Already looking forward to festive season? We’ve got the perfect party look for you: golden eyes, as seen at Tom Ford, where shimmering shadow was paired with kohl liner, and Gabriela Hearst, where a warm golden tone was topped with a sprinkle of glitter. 56 NOVEMBER 2020
gothic vibes Pale skin, black cherry lips, kohl-rimmed eyes, or all of the above – that was the brief at a whole host of AW20 shows, from Rodarte and Anna Sui
statement hair
“a perfectly painted scarlet lip never goes out of style, but this season, matte red makes way for something with a bit more shine”
Hair stylists went all out for AW20, creating some spectacular catwalk looks, from huge, wide wigs at Matty Bovan and sculpted braids at Ashish, to colourful stencilled locks at Emilio Pucci and slicked-back silver tresses at Erdem. Obviously, these aren’t the kind of styles you can easily replicate at home, but the chic twisted knots and braids seen at Fendi and Rixo are a lot more wearable, while still offering plenty of wow-factor.
in New York, to Gucci and Max Mara in Milan. While going full-on goth with that make-up trio might seem a bit much, a deep berry lip is a softer way to try the trend.
Pops of colour The brightest make-up hues are usually reserved for spring, but there were some welcome splashes of colour on the autumn catwalks. Pink was particularly popular, with bubblegum pink eyes at Matty Bovan, fuchsia mascara at Off-White, and Eighties-style eyeshadow at Rixo.
red lips A perfectly painted scarlet lip never goes out of style, of course, but this season, matte red makes way for something with a bit more shine. We’re not going so far as to say gloss is back – aim for a soft satin finish, as seen at Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and Jil Sander. NOVEMBER 2020 57

SMALL
SPACE STYLE
It’s possible to live large despite sleeping small, says Luke Rix-Standing.
Bags and boxes are good for long-term storage, but slide-out clothes drawers are especially expedient, as they lessen the need for that other great space-snatcher, a large wardrobe.
F
or many of us, house space is a fiercely contested commodity, and you need to squeeze the most out of every square inch. But luckily there are plenty of clever tricks you can use to make this happen. Mirrors, multifunctional furniture and a recurring colour or pattern are all your friends. Here’s how to make even the smallest bedroom feel larger – without having to sleep on the sofa… Let there be light It’s the oldest rule in the book: Bright, breezy spaces feel looser, larger and lighter, so put your bed on the opposite wall from your windows and keep them clear of clutter. Thick, heavy curtains will help you keep warm in winter, but they will also protrude physically and visually into your room, so dress your windows with unobtrusive blinds or rollers instead. Under-bed storage is your friend Every square inch counts when you’re space saving, and there should be no room for monsters beneath the bed once you’ve finished economising.

Make it a a virtue One person’s cramped is another person’s cozy, and a few soft furnishings can turn a poky shoebox into a snug den or bolthole. Think fuzzy blankets, chocolate box ornaments, warming lamps and lighting – anything you might associate with a comfy Scandinavian cabin on a cold winter’s day. Mirror, mirror Bedroom, entrance hall or downstairs loo – mirrors have long been number one on the list of domestic design tricks. They don’t add any physical space, of course, but they send light bouncing round the walls and can trick the eye into doubling a room’s depth. For the best brightening effects, place your mirror opposite a window and for the greatest sense of space, consider the wall opposite the door. Bed size matters We know, it’s so tempting to snap up an XXL king size and spend every night splayed out like a starfish, but if floor space is precious, your bed is the obvious place to seek savings. If you’re 6’4” and married, fair play; if you’re 5’3” and single, perhaps consider downsizing. Put your headboard to work Select the right design and your headboard can double as shelves for storage; a tabletop for

ornaments; a rail for hanging clothes – anything really besides a useless wooden plank. Think vertically Just as city centres maximise space by building upwards, so too can your bedroom. Think of a room in terms of volume, rather than surface area, and prioritise floor-to-ceiling units that can squeeze the most from every inch of your room. Add shelves atop wardrobes and cupboards, or just use them as storage space anyway. If you are investing in mirrors, make them full-length, and design your room to draw the eye upwards. Consider vertically-striped wallpaper, a different-coloured ceiling, and high-hung pictures and decor.
at least three of them, and they can easily turn into dead space. Consider anything with a right angle – tables, light fixtures, or wraparound, triangular shelving. Employ a feature wall Every room benefits from a statement centrepiece, and in a shoe-box bedroom it can hardly be the four-poster bed. Physical focal points may struggle to squeeze in, so instead opt for a visual one – a well decorated wall with an artwork, a photo collage, or simply a bold pattern.
“Think of a room in terms of volume, rather than surface area”
Choose furniture strategically Pick pieces that can serve multiple purposes, or at least do the job as efficiently as possible. Double up your desk and bedside table; pick a compact cabinet over an elaborate chest of drawers; investigate foldaway futons. Curate your colour scheme Lighter colours feel airier and more open, and there’s a reasons that whites, greys and varying shades of cream crop up again and again in the centrefolds of interior design magazines. From your paint job to flooring and furnishings, avoid darker colours that might lend a claustrophobic feel. Establish a theme It doesn’t take much for small spaces to feel disorganised, and giving your room a designed, curated feel brings a much-needed sense of order. It could be a colour or pattern – recurring on cushions, bed covers and wallpaper – or a simple motif. Declutter Minimalism is as fashionable as it is functional, and most bedrooms bear at least a few bulky burdens that would be better off down the charity shop. Do you really need that brick-sized Nokia with the first ever version of Snake, the box of expired medicines, or the tabletop popcorn maker you used once in 2015? iggins Homes, an Essex-based housebuilder, has proved that every buyer deserves quality by winning first place at the prestigious First Time Buyer Readers’ Awards. Within the category ‘Best First Time Buyer Apartment’, Higgins Homes beat off stiff competition with the winning development, New Stratford Works. The annual Awards highlight the many lengths housebuilders go to in order to help buyers onto the ladder. Now in their eleventh

year, the Awards’ ethos is to celebrate projects that deliver aspirational properties within the budget of the first time buyer. This year’s Awards were hosted online by television presenters Jonnie Irwin from A Place in the Sun and Nicki Chapman from Escape to the Country. Each category was shortlisted by a panel of industry expert judges and then readers of First Time Buyer Magazine were given the deciding vote through an online system. “We’re delighted to win because we understand the importance of owning a first home and that it is our job to guide buyers through the process,” says Jeremy Marcus, Sales & Marketing Director at Higgins Homes. “For many, it is the realisation of a dream so this drives us to deliver the best homes within the best financial terms for first time buyers. I’m
pleased to say that New Stratford Works has delivered on so many levels, which is why it has virtually sold out.” Higgins Homes are experts in transforming areas into vibrant communities and with New Stratford Works, the developer has created new apartments on the site of a former locomotive depot. Today, the collection of hotel-style apartments comprises 154 homes just moments from Westfield Stratford City and the Queen Elizabeth Park. “This disused industrial area is now a real and thriving neighbourhood with outstanding infrastructure, commercial space and a new park,” adds Jeremy Marcus. “Community and first-class amenities are central to our idea of home ownership. Our approach is to create integrated neighbourhoods with a strong sense of wellbeing and excellent design throughout to create the best living experience possible.” Now, just one property remains for sale at New Stratford Works. The development benefits from an excellent location just moments from Stratford International Station. Outstanding connectivity together with access to open space has created an urban sanctuary. Located in the heart of the development, Higgins Homes has built a new Linear Park, bursting will all manner of trees and foliage allowing every resident the opportunity to get back to nature.
