BBC SEVEN WORLDS ONE PLANET
LIVE IN CONCERT
The O2 Arena, London 31st March 2022 BAFTA winning British Explorer, Naturalist and TV Presenter Steve Backshall to host special UK Premiere Ahead of this much anticipated event, we chatted to Steve Backshall about being the host in 2022. There’s been other natural history shows performed live with music before, but this new production is on another level. Can you tell us about why it’s going to be such an event? This is simply an extravaganza of both sight and sound which is going to completely overwhelm people’s senses. It showcases the very best of glorious, glamourous, blue-chip natural history on a giant screen, backed by a full live 80-piece orchestra, which is something that all too rarely gets to happen. This is my first opportunity to do one, so I’m very excited. The show itself was hosted by the greatest broadcaster of all time, Sir David Attenborough, so I have to find a way of trying to step into his shoes! The music by Zimmer and Shea is more than just a score, it’s an essential part of the production. How important do you feel it is for music to help convey the emotion and messages of a production like this one? It’s critical. It’s an area that I’ve not had a tremendous amount of involvement with, as the

shows I have made just haven’t had the kind of budget you need to commission a score by Hans Zimmer. When you watch those kinds of shows, they have this ability to make your heart soar, but then can make it plummet with a moment of fear or terror when we are being shown environmental degradation. It has an unparalleled ability to steer or enhance your emotions. Either the visuals or the sound of this show would be enough for me to go and see it if I wasn’t involved! Seven Worlds, One Planet was the BBC’s most-watched factual programme of 2019 and now it’s being shown live to an audience of thousands. It must be encouraging that so many people, both young and old, are engaging with something that has such an important message beyond just entertainment? This isn’t just for conservationists or biologists, it is something that anyone can appreciate and be moved by, which is really important. These programmes bring people to the natural world

never seen before, or have a massive rock fall on your head! It’s that sense of the unknown that is really exciting to me. It’s been the great privilege of my adult life to repeatedly have that opportunity. That’s something special and that I will be most grateful to have experienced. Lastly, if anyone is undecided about coming to The O2 in March to see Seven Worlds, One Planet…why should they be making a point of attending? At the moment, this is a one-off opportunity to see something that visually and aurally will be completely unmatched. It’s going to be a very special evening. It’s going to be unforgettable!
and all those marvels and wonders that they may never get to see with their own eyes. Or potentially they will, as these shows could start a whole new fascination in their lives that leads towards them seeing these things for themselves. They can lead people to conservation and the natural world, which has never been more important to be doing than it is right now. The series was narrated by Sir David Attenborough himself, who’s voice will still be heard at the show. How much of an influence and inspiration has he been to you personally? He is everything. I’ve been lucky enough to meet him several times and even present a couple of awards ceremonies alongside him. We did an awards show for the 100th anniversary of the Wildlife Trust at the Natural History Museum. Myself and a few other people spoke, which we had all spent ages planning for, then Sir David stepped up and spoke for an hour without any slides or preparation. He didn’t hesitate once and had the entire room hanging on every single syllable. The man has an absolutely unparalleled gift as a storyteller and a broadcaster. You’ve already had a long career that has taken you all over the world, what has been the real highlights for you personally? I would probably treasure the expeditions most, where you don’t know what’s going to happen next. There could be a major discovery around the next corner, or you could find a new species you’ve

THE CELEBRITY READER L
ee Whyberd, also known as ‘The Celebrity Reader’, is world-renowned psychic, medium, healer and founder of Lee Wellness in Dubai. When not overseas, he is based at Ballingdon Hall - a luxury retreat in Sudbury, Suffolk. Lee is a highly soughtafter celebrity psychic with an impressive clientele including royal families and celebrities. Here he talks to Life magazine about his intriguing gift and growing reputation as the new psychic force. Why are you a psychic and a medium? I was fortunate to be born with a gift, but I have had to work hard to develop it. I’ve spent many years in a private spiritual circle that helped me to enhance my capabilities of being a psychic and a medium. And, I am still learning every day. What was your first psychic experience like? I was brought up with a spiritual family so I acknowledged spirits from the age of 4. I’ve never been frightened of seeing spirits from the spirit world. When I was 13, I laid in my bed and my whole room turned into the most vivid colour blue and I had seen my first guardian angel. Can you learn to become a medium? Only if you have the gift in the first place then you can then develop the spirituality within you. It takes a great deal of hard work to develop the gift. I teach and develop people on a weekly basis. But it does take a lot of work, dedication and trust in oneself. Who are your clients? I have varied clientele from around the world. I work with 232 nationalities worldwide. I work with celebrities, corporate business owners, and some

of the most powerful people in the world. They are all looking for answers in different ways; some for work, or because of bereavement, love life, pregnancy or business opportunities. What is the percentage of women to men? 60% are women and 40% are men. In the last 2 years, men are reaching out more than ever before for readings and healing. We are the new wellness coaches! How do men and women’s questions differ? Women are more passionate and want to know about timescale and detail. Men always want to know about finances!
Do most people ask about their dead loved ones or their future loved ones more? Yes. They do ask about their dead loved ones, but they do also ask about their loved ones on earth. Is there anything you would not reveal? There is always a way to deliver a message. As long as I do it with responsibility and moderation, I reveal everything. They come to me for the truth. Forewarned is forearmed to prevent bad things occurring. What should people do to get the most out of a reading? Some people come in and think by blocking and not talking they can put me on the spot. But if they open up a little, they will get a lot more coming through from the spiritual world. Can you explain the meaning of the words medium, psychic and clairvoyant? Mediumship is about connecting to the other side. Psychic is about the present and future. Clairvoyancy is about going to somebody’s house in my mind, looking around and explaining what the house looks like. People think all 3 are psychic, but this is not so as each one has a different meaning. I am a healer and wellness coach too – a service which more and more people want since the pandemic.
THE DETAILS For a reading, or to join a retreat at Ballingdon Hall, Lee can be contacted at: leewhyberd@gmail.com or go to ballingdonhall.co.uk
What do you experience when giving a reading? I have the five senses, I feel, see, taste, smell and hear. Each sense comes with a different approach. For instance, the spirit will want me to know how they smell. They also put pains in my body to let me know how they passed away. Spirit cannot write you a text, so sometimes, they show you different signs that only a medium will understand. What has been your most amazing reading? I try to give the best to everyone. My most memorable bereavement was when a child passed away and I was able to connect her parent to her. This has happened many times. Bringing two spirits back together is one of the best feelings I have. What are you doing in your life and career now? I own a wellness and retreat company in Dubai where I have spent a great deal of time over recent years. However, I am now also based at Ballingdon Hall in Sudbury, Suffolk where I host Personal Wellness and Spiritual Enrichment retreats. Ballingdon Hall is set in a beautiful Tudor house and grounds owned by my friends, Lesley Reynolds and Dr. Aamer Khan who founded the award-winning Harley Street Skin (aesthetics) clinic. They host a variety of wellness programmes at Ballingdon Hall for weightloss and health, stress, anxiety and loss, as well as specific men’s health retreats and couples retreats. My work there will allow me just enough time for a UK stage tour – Covid permitting, this later in the year. J AANRUYA R2 Y JANU 0 2220 222 1 1 9

Avoiding the blame game for a less stressful divorce The grass is green, the sky is blue, and divorce is stressful. We tend to take it as fact that divorce is characterised by stress, anger and bitterness.
H
owever, with alternative dispute resolution (ADR) options such as mediation, collaborative law and arbitration available to couples, a relationship breakdown does not always have to end this way. While ADR methods may not work for everyone, they increase the likelihood of coming to an agreement out of court, allowing both parties to maintain a more positive ongoing relationship. And, with no-fault divorce still some months off, they enable couples to avoid the ‘blame game’ that court cases have the potential to become. Mediation is a way of resolving disagreements between you and your ex-partner by way of a professional intermediary, known as a mediator. While a mediator is unable to give legal advice, they will facilitate discussions and work with you to constructively resolve any disagreements. Collaborative law requires both parties to appoint a collaboratively trained solicitor, who will attend meetings with yourself and your ex-partner. This

route provides a big incentive to couples to make things work: if they end up going to court, they’ll have to appoint another lawyer and start again from scratch. Arbitration is a way of getting a legally binding judgement on the terms of your separation if you cannot agree, without going to court. Instead, you can appoint private family arbitrator to make the decision for you, which has the dual benefits of increased privacy and flexibility. Flexible, empathetic legal support Throughout the divorce or separation process, it is vital to have knowledgeable and supportive Family Law solicitors on hand to guide you. At Attwaters Jameson Hill, we’ve spent many years advising clients on best route for their circumstances and long-term welfare, whether this be through the courts or via ADR. YEARS OF FERRARI T

The 125 S, as it was known, embodied the passion and determination of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. To date Ferrari’s most important sporting successes include 15 F1 World Drivers’ Championships, 16 F1 World Constructors’ Championships, 14 Sports Car Manufacturers’ World titles, nine wins at 24 Hours of Le Mans, eight at the Mille Miglia, seven at the Targa Florio and 226 victories in F1 Grand Prix. At the end of the war, Baracca’s parents offered to allow Enzo Ferrari to use the Cavallino Rampante (Prancing Horse) symbol. He adopted it as the logo for his racing Scuderia, placing it on a yellow shield in honour of his hometown of Modena and topping it with the Italian tricolour. The classic Ferrari red, however, was simply the colour assigned by the International Automobile Federation to Italian grand prix cars in the early years of the last century. This structure starts in Reception leaving our nursery unit of 24 children under the guiding hand of three well qualified Nursery Specialists. Where local state schools find themselves working with children in classes of 30+, our wellproportioned classes of 20 enable more focused teaching and individualised learning. Where do firm foundations begin? Pupils attainment at the end of Early Years is strong with most children exceeding in their goals before entering Key Stage 1. Using the seven areas of learning, the team offer a broad and balanced approach across the curriculum. Strength from daily reading and writing as well as a structured approach to maths, places the children well above the national average as a cohort. Where is the school innovating? Schools need to embrace change where change is needed and where the world changes so does education. Embracing the technologies of the future offers the pupils exciting opportunities to explore learning for themselves. The basics of engineering are explored in Early Years and built on in subsequent years. The use of technology in the classroom is important and in our Prep Department children have their own Chrome Book to support this independence in learning. STEM is a developing 30 JANUARY 2022
area of school and our focused STEM Week gives rise to project-based work and collaboration across the school.

Where do the 11+ pupils go after Avon House? We feed into a variety of schools for secondary education. We appreciate that not all parents want their child to remain in independent schooling post 11, but for those that do, we offer a robust and thorough process from Year 5 through to the end of Year 6. This process begins when the child starts their journey with us. We observe, nurture and challenge pupils from the beginning to achieve their goals. This is done on looking at the holistic child, fostering a love of music, the arts and sport. When the time comes for the 11+ to be the main focus we offer mock interviews and clear guidance of the exam process within our 11+ Exam Preparation Programme. We are proud that our pupils receive first choice offers in most cases and that the destination schools will drive them onto success following the firm foundations we developed along the way and are honoured to fly under the UNICEF banner of a Rights Respecting environment for the next generation of successful adults.

New ways to wear knitwear From preppy collars to knitted trousers, Prudence Wade picks out the coolest ways to wear wool this season.
K
nitwear is no longer the reserve of itchy jumpers and gaudy prints. Over the last few years, style icons like Katie Holmes have helped knitwear shed its stuffy reputation. Designers have also shown us just how versatile wool can be – still suitable for those days when you want to cosy up in something warm and fluffy, but also totally appropriate for a more risqué look. Throughout 2020, our attitudes towards fashion have shifted – and many of these changes look like they’re here to stay. We’ve become less interested in constrictive ensembles and sky-high heels, instead choosing comfortable clothes that make us look and feel great – and this is where knitwear really fits in. It’s perfect for colder weather, infinitely comfortable, and can be styled in a multitude of ways. If you’re looking to switch up your woollies, these are the best styles to try this season…
COLLARED TOPS Who said knitwear couldn’t dip its toes into the athleisure trend? For a sportier take on woollies, brands like Lacoste and Ganni have been adding collars to knitted tops and jumpers. This look also ties in with another big trend of the moment: Big Collar Energy. As so many of us have swapped offices for Zoom calls, we’ve adopted a ‘waist up’ approach to dressing. A supersized collar is the perfect way to do this – and it’s a look that takes inspiration from Princess Diana, whose fashion we’ve all become re-obsessed with lately, thanks to season four of The Crown. 4 RR Y Y2 0 22 0 122 46 2 JJAANNUUAA
To get in on the preppy look, pick a jumper, cardigan or slim-fit knitted top with a collar – either in the same colour or a contrasting design for extra impact.
SQUARE NECKLINES For a modern take on knitwear, take a leaf out of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s book and opt for a square neckline. The model and businesswoman often wears a geometric neck, as it’s an easy way to make a knitted jumper look cutting edge. It’s also a good opportunity to show off your favourite jewellery, so don’t forget to accessorise with a chunky necklace.
KNITTED TROUSERS Luckily for anyone who can’t bear to leave the house in anything other than loungewear now, woollen trousers have exploded in popularity – and they’re just as comfy as your favourite pair of trackies. To make knitted trousers appropriate for the outdoors, we recommend going all-in on a matching set. Team with a snazzy pair of trainers and a well tailored coat, and no one will clock you’re wearing glorified pyjamas.
FORM-FITTING DRESSES Woollen dresses don’t usually have the coolest of reputations, but they’ve had a serious image overhaul this season. Instead of shapeless, sacklike silhouettes, form-fitting knitted dresses have
been taking over Instagram. This is the kind of outfit that suits any body type, and you can opt for as much or as little coverage as you feel comfortable with. We particularly like long-sleeved dresses with interesting necklines or open backs, making for an unexpected take on a classic knitted ensemble.
GRAPHIC PRINTS Many of us fall into the trap of a winter wardrobe swathed in black. If you’re desperate to get a bit more colour into your life, it could be time to get in on the trend for geometric prints in knitwear. This is all about jumpers and cardigans with graphic prints and bright colours. You can go all-in on the look with clashing colours and interesting patterns, or take a more low-key path and add the odd splash of lime green. Ultimately, it’s all about making knitwear bright and playful.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE GLUE EAR?
T
he sound is conducted through the ear canal to ear drum and from ear drum to inner ear by small bones of hearing. This middle ear space can sometimes get filled with thick, sticky fluid just like glue hence the name glue ear. This fluid can dampen the sound reaching inner ear and can affect hearing. Glue ear is very common in children until the age of 2 to 5. 80 percent of the kids would have had at least one episode of glue ear by the age of 10. Frequent cold and flu, allergies, passive smoking and some genetic conditions can contribute to your child having glue ear. It can be associated with tonsillitis and blocked nose. If you notice behaviour changes, hearing loss and speech delay, balance problem and your child complain of ear pain it could be due to glue ear. There is evidence to show a link between glue ear and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). You should seek medical help if you notice any of these symptoms.
Good news is in most of the cases glue ear resolves after three months of watchful waiting. In other cases, treatment options include auto inflation, grommets or hearing aid. It is also important to get schools involved in supporting children with glue ear. Mr Kumar is an experienced ear surgeon based in East London and Essex. He can examine your child and advice your best treatment options.

of the most iconic handbags of all time
These world-famous bags are as in-demand today as when they were launched, says Katie Wright.
W
hile countless clothing trends have come and gone, certain handbags have maintained remained desirable across the decades, as coveted now as when they first hit designer boutique shelves all those years ago. But why do some styles endure while others fall out of fashion? “The endurance of certain iconic handbag designs can be linked to the power of celebrity endorsement,” says Dr Lucia Savi, curator of Bags: Inside Out, the exhibition which has just opened at the V&A in London. “In the 1950s and 60s, trendsetters such as Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis saw their favourite handbags renamed in their honour. “Then came the ‘It’ bag phenomenon of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when certain handbags became the ultimate symbols of conspicuous consumption.” As well as being carried by a stylish celeb, to reach iconic arm candy status a bag must possess certain characteristic, Dr Savi says. “The ingredients needed to create a classic bag include a recognisable shape and exceptional attention to details. “Bamboo handles, quilted leather, innovative materials and distinctive hardware, together with strategic marketing have all been used to transform an otherwise anonymous design into a popular yet enduring classic.”
Here, Dr Savi talks us through five historic handbags that have stood the test of time…
46 JANUARY 2022
Hermes Birkin “With a structured shape, curved top handle and minimalistic design, the Birkin bag has become one of the most legendary handbags of the 20th and 21st centuries. “Hermes’ chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas created this iconic bag in 1984, for English singer Jane Birkin, after they sat together on a flight and she complained of being unable to find a leather carrier with pockets that she liked. “The Birkin bag is one of the most-sought after and celebrated handbags of all time and commands long waiting lists.”
Fendi Baguette “Compact and stylish with a curved strap and iconic double F hardware, the Fendi Baguette is to be safely carried under the wearer’s arm, just like the French bread from which it takes its name. “It was created in 1997 and has been heralded as the first global ‘It’ bag, with reports of around 600,000 being sold in the 10 years after it launched. “The bag was famously worn by protagonist Carrie Bradshaw in American TV show Sex and the City. During one episode, when Bradshaw is being robbed, she indignantly informs the mugger that her purple sequinned Fendi is not simply a bag, ‘It’s a Baguette!’”
The Lady Dior has been one of Christian Dior’s most recognised bag designs
classic, featuring distinctive quilted leather, rectangular lock and chain shoulder strap, and was photographed being worn by celebrities such as French actresses Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot.”
Launer Traviata “Launer bags have been carried by Queen Elizabeth for over 50 years, and the Traviata bag has long been her regular companion and favoured style. “The bag is hand-crafted, taking eight hours to make. It is both practical and stylish, with a top handle and sturdy structured body, decorated with Launer’s distinctive gold-plated, twisted rope emblem. “Interestingly, unlike the model in the exhibition, the royal version is bespoke and features longer handles.”

Christian Dior Lady Dior “This bag is topstitched with a ‘cannage’ diamond pattern, a signature of this design, and gold-tone metal Dior letter charms hang from the rounded handles. “The Lady Dior has been one of Christian Dior’s most recognised bag designs since it was launched in 1995. “Originally named ‘Chouchou’, meaning favourite, France’s then-First Lady, Bernadette Chirac, gave the bag as a gift to Diana Princess of Wales. THE HISTORY OF
JIMMY CHOO
We take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.
Y
ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. 50 JANUARY 2022
High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue,
“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is” - Jimmy Choo
who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear - with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating highend footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring

Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystalembellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-to-earth leather goods and ready-towear. What’s the best serum for your skin type?
Finding the right super-powered serum can make all the difference, says Katie Wright.
ANEW RENEWAL PROTINOL POWER SERUM, £16, AVAILABLE FROM AVON
RESURFACING SERUM, £64, AVAILABLE FROM AURELIA LONDON
A
host of exciting new launches is putting serums in the spotlight, but what if you’ve yet to add this underrated essential to your beauty routine? We asked skincare experts for their advice on how to find the best serum for your skin…
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A SKINCARE SERUM? “A serum delivers a high concentration of an active skincare ingredient to the skin – the nature of the active will depend on the skincare concern,” says Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist for Vichy, which is why it’s so important to find the product that’s best suited to your needs. Lighter in texture than moisturisers or creams, serums are “quickly absorbed into the skin, and are therefore a fantastic way to layer products,” says dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong, who is currently working with Philips. “Some serums will combine several actives to target different skin issues simultaneously. This approach of pared back skincare, delivering only what is needed in a personalised and minimalistic way, otherwise known as ‘skinimalism’, has become an increasingly popular and sensible trend in skincare.” 15 9 MR BY E R 2 2002221 6 4J N AO NVUE A
HOW SHOULD SERUM BE APPLIED? “As serums tend to be lightweight and crammed full of actives they are best applied onto clean, slightly damp skin after a cleanser but before moisturiser,” says Dr Sommerlad. Dr Wong says: “Anti-ageing serums containing photosensitising retinols should be applied in the evening,” and followed with SPF 30 or above the next morning. “Generally speaking, if the serum is for antioxidant purposes, this should be used during the day.”
Julian Boaitey, founder of Yendy
BLISS GLOW & HYDRATE DAY HYALURONIC SERUM, £19.99, AVAILABLE FROM BOOTS
Mature skin In terms of the best serum ingredients for mature skin, Dr Wong says: “The effect of retinols (Vitamin A derivatives) on improving collagen production, evening out skin tone and improving cell turnover is well established, and has sealed its status as the ultimate active to include in any antiageing routine.” She also recommends Vitamin C for it’s antioxidant effects and as “an important co-factor in collagen production. Mature skin tends to be on the drier side and retaining moisture becomes more challenging, so including hyaluronic acid in the serum is recommended, but it can also help to offset any dryness caused by the retinol.”
Darker skin tones For brown and black skin tones – types five and six on the Fitzpatrick scale – an oil-based serum is ideal.“To best protect, nourish and treat darker skin tones, it’s really important to use a serum that’s rich in antioxidants,” says Julian Boaitey, founder of Yendy. “Baobab seed
oil boasts the highest antioxidant content of all its superfood friends, increasing collagen production in the skin, whilst lightening dark spots and locking in moisture.” He also recommends marula oil for “acne-induced hyperpigmentation, due to the natural Vitamin C that’s in it” and rosehip for “evening out the skin tone, whilst also increasing the skin’s natural elasticity.”
Oily “For oily skin, look for serums that are hydrating without being too heavy,” says Dr Sommerlad. Hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin is “unlikely to clog pores or leave a greasy residue. It’s effective in keeping skin well hydrated.”
VICHY MINÉRAL 89 HYALURONIC ACID HYDRATION BOOSTER SERUM, £18.75 (WAS £25), AVAILABLE FROM BOOTS
Sensitive If your skin reacts to active ingredients, Dr Sommerlad recommends “serums that are unlikely to trigger the skin, but instead, are able to hydrate it.” Hyaluronic acid is more gentle than it sounds, especially when part of a lightweight formula.
Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist for Vichy
ERBORIAN YUZA SUPER SERUM, £46, AVAILABLE FROM SPACE NK
Dry
Dr Wong is also a fan of hyaluronic acid for dry skin, calling it “the key ingredient to quench thirsty skin. As a highly-effective humectant, it has the ability to trap and retain water molecules to significantly boost skin hydration.”
Combination “Combination skin can experience dullness in some areas and oiliness in others – look for serums which are multitasking,” says Dr Sommerlad, and Vitamin C, which has “antioxidant benefits, as well as the ability to help with pigmentation issues.”
HYDRANET BI-PHASE CELL RENEWAL SERUM, £30, AVAILABLE FROM SKINSENSE
Acne prone
Dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong
Chemical exfoliation is essential for helping to keep pores clear and prevent spots from forming, which means “hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid, lactic and glycolic acid,” says Dr Wong. Other key ingredients to look out for are antiinflammatory actives such as niacinamide, which helps to regulate sebum production, and Vitamin C to reduce associated post acne scarring and pigmentation.”

The Enduring Appeal of
Japanese Interiors Anna Howell, Chaplins Interiors Editor
I
t’s been likened to a quiet storm. The type of idea that makes its way to our shores in whispers, riding the crest of waves like origami, wabi sabi and kintsugi. Far too ancient to be considered trendy, Japanese influences are nevertheless ever-present — at once as a vehicle for outstanding aesthetics, and as a roadmap for a more fulfilling life. The infatuation predates even today’s crop of international tastemakers. Charlotte Perriand, the acclaimed French designer, spent much of her heyday in Japan, and so did Italian architect Gianfranco Frattini. But what is novel, perhaps, is how necessary the Japanese approach to living now feels. How the Japanese home came to embody the ideals of serene, considered living is explained by Joy Hendry in her seminal 1995 essay, Wrapping Culture. “In Japanese culture, there is a certain power attached to the condition of being enclosed. Ascetics who shut themselves away were said to gain spiritual power, a concept in Japan known as utsubo”. While utsubo initially only applied to a handful of Zen philosophers, it soon trickled into the wider culture, leading to a reverence of life indoors and a more thoughtful approach to the way we design interiors. Today, many Japanese homes are distinguished by a sense of lightness. Dining room furniture is kept classic and minimal with clear open lines that encourage conversation, while sculptural

paper lanterns provide a soft halo of luminosity overhead. In this pantheon of aesthetics, sharp edges find short shrift, replaced instead by soft rounded silhouettes that seem to have been shaped by the elements instead. It’s an idea that even extends towards some of the more traditionally bulky items of furniture. In the hands of designers like Isamu Noguchi and Naoto Fukasawa, beds, bookcases and coffee tables seem to float above the ground, maximising the sense of available space. Journalist Marilena Sobacchi has described this new lexis of lightness as a concentration of expressivity in minimal form. We like to think of it as the ability to say a lot with a little. In the absence of excessive ornamentation, there is room to think. An idea that Marie Kondo explores in her bestselling series The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “When your room is clean and uncluttered, you have no choice but to examine your inner state.” Marie Kondo Nor is the search for levity directly restricted to
interiors. As the news cycle intensifies, downloads of meditation apps like Calm and Headspace have reached fever pitch. So too, has the demand for a new type of influencer, the kind that advocates buying once and buying well over an endless cycle of materialism. Transcending the Zeitgeist in 2022 will naturally look different for everyone. But there’s something rather endearing about the idea that calm, stillness and serenity can become the house you live in. It’s in this arena that Japanese inspired-interiors excel. Championing intentionality over excess and stillness instead of clutter. To shop any of the Japanese-inspired designs in this article, simply head to chaplins.co.uk. TOP INTERIOR TRENDS AS TOLD BY ROTHLEY Sophie Hill, Marketing and Insight and Innovation at Rothley, comments on 2022’s top interior trends as seen by Rothley
Eco-friendly design A more conscious way of living is at the top of our priority list, as the climate crisis worsens and we all try to do our bit to help. We’ve seen a clear shift towards more conscious choices, whether that is materials or extending the life of items around the home rather than buying more things. Low-waste living and upcycling is at the heart of creating a mindful home, and we have definitely seen a rise in upcycling which is likely to continue - from people sewing and making over old outfits, to making garden furniture out of wooden pallets. For the less experienced DIY-ers, taking an old piece of furniture and customising it is a great way to reduce waste and also means no one else has the same piece as you! It is amazing what a new set of legs can do to a set of table and chairs, we have also just launched our new hairpin legs range. In a variety of sizes and finishes, they’re set to transform any old desk or cabinet. My personal tip

would be to make a habit of visiting local charity shops - you’d be surprised by the gems you can find! Looking for a bigger change - instead of purchasing a whole new kitchen, why not paint the cabinets, expose some shelves for a tidier feel, and swap out some elements like taps and hooks? That way you still get a ‘new’ kitchen without the effort and mess of a whole new unit.
When it comes to materials, we at Rothley recognise consumers’ needs for more conscious choices which is why we have introduced a Krome range - the finish has exactly the same appearance as chrome, but is more durable, much more environmentally friendly and there are no harmful by-products generated during production. We’ve also cut back on our packaging, utilising recyclable materials and replacing plastic wrapping with sustainable alternatives.
Decorative metal Gone are the days when a utensil hook or curtain pole were just practical items in the home. With stylish options in a variety of colours and sizes available now, those once practical items are now part of curated home design schemes. Choose your desired finish, like matt black or polished silver, and implement it throughout the home, for a coherent look which travels from room to room. Top tip: If you’re feeling bold, extend the metallic finish into bigger elements of the home, like a copper table top in the dining room, matched with a splashback in the kitchen.
Bold contrasting colours After spending the last 18 months cooped in our homes, we’re eager to open the windows and doors of our homes and let the world in. Colour has been on the rise, and will continue to be in the centre of interior design in 2022. As greys and neutral hues are taking a back seat, interior enthusiasts are moving from using colour blocks to separate the home office from the kitchen, to simply embracing colour as a way of injecting
personality and giving a space a new lease of life. At Rothley we have noticed consumers hunger for colour, as our coloured accessories are out selling steel and gunmetal alternatives. Home accessories in copper and matt black finishes are some of our best sellers, outselling chrome effect and polished stainless steel by 3%, and we have also just launched a range of hairpin legs which come in antique brass, polished copper, gunmetal and matt black.
Home office As the world reopens, we are adopting a new flexible way of living, taking into account some of the learnings from the pandemic. Many of us spent months working from home, and while it could be lonely at times, it also had some benefits we’re not ready to let go of, and many are spending some of their work time at home on an ongoing basis now. Home offices are going to continue to be in the centre of decorating in 2022, especially since many of us had to create them with almost no time to prepare. Now we have the time to make a home office its own space, and give it as much thought as we would designing a kitchen or bedroom.
With over 190 years of experience, Rothley offers a variety of metal hardware products including handrail, shelving brackets, furniture legs and curtain poles, and now also launching trendy hairpin legs. Rothley home improvement products are helping make your interior style dreams a reality. An advocate for ‘fashionmongery,’ Rothley provides the right finishing touches for a curated home design look, coordinating previously functional items in shades to suit your aesthetic including matt black and polished copper. The latest launch from Rothley is hairpin legs, a fashion forward way to put your stamp on your furniture - whether upcycling a new lease of life into an existing item or creating a new statement piece. ironmongerydirect.co.uk/ brands/rothley JANUARY 2022 65

Steps towards mental and physical wellbeing can come in various forms, for you it could mean creating a place where the whole family can be together and spend time having fun or building somewhere just for you to wind down and relax. Swimming is a fantastic activity and an excellent way to work your entire body and cardiovascular system. As well as the amazing advantages for your physical health, swimming also has a remarkable impact on your mental health as it improves your mood, increases your self-esteem, lowers the risk of depression, slows dementia and cognitive decline, improves sleep and reduces stress. Numerous studies have also proven the benefits swimming can have on your body; swimmers have a lower risk of heart disease and strokes, lower blood pressure and reduced joint pain. ‘Flower Power’ roller blind range Ella Doran launches

esigner Ella Doran has announced the launch of a brand-new range of roller blinds entitled Flower Power. The new collection, joining her established, made-to-measure range, is made up of two mini collections – Floral Portraits, a series inspired by the great Dutch floral still life paintings of the late 17th and early 18th centuries and Floral Bursts, which feature a slightly more informal series of arrangements. The images were all shot and composed by Ella Doran, who first made her name in the late 1990s with her pioneering application of photography-based images and patterns onto products for the home. There are four new blind designs in each mini-collection, making eight in the overall series. ‘The works of the still life painters Jacob Woutersz Vosmaer and Rachel Ruysch were the initial inspiration for the series’ Ella Doran explained. ‘I’ve long been a fan of the arrangements in these paintings, where the flowers are portrayed against dark backgrounds and strike a great balance between formality and a certain real-ness and celebration of Nature’s imperfections. I wanted to pay homage to the paintings, but in a contemporary way, with the photographic style allowing the flowers themselves to win out more over the background.’ elladesign.co.uk
