Let’s Talk Kindergarten

Braeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of Schools. All four schools have well-established and popular Kindergartens, catering to children from 2½ years.

We talk to Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal, about the benefits of starting with the Oak-Tree Group in Kindergarten before continuing up through the school.

Q: What are the benefits of attending the Oak-Tree Kindergartens rather than a local nursery?

One of the biggest benefits of an Oak-Tree Kindergarten is the smaller class sizes. Uniqueness can be celebrated, and the individual needs of each and every pupil are considered. Classes also benefit from having qualified teaching assistants to support each class. This is hugely important at this stage in their lives when children are developing rapidly.

The schools aim to provide a structured educational environment, where the children are encouraged to learn through play. Additionally, specialist subject teachers enrich the children’s experiences with other activities such as sports, music, dance, and computing.

Pupils have access to a huge range of resources across the school site, such as the school libraries, computer suites, and banks of iPads. The Group also has a fleet of minibuses that open up the wider world exponentially, allowing regular visits to the farm, museums, trampoline parks, and the zoo, helping to broaden young minds.

Q: Will starting at Kindergarten provide automatic entrance to Reception and beyond?

Starting in Kindergarten will help parents secure a place for their child in Reception, saving them from having to go for further assessments and interview processes at aged 4. It is therefore hardly surprising that many pupils see the school and their teachers almost as a second family throughout their educational journey.

Q: What positive feedback have you had recently about the individual schools?

At Braeside the Kindergarten and Reception children benefit from a spacious, covered, outdoor area that formed part of a recent extensive programme of improvements. The dedicated outside area enables learning to take place effectively both inside and outside the classroom. The Early Years has flourished in recent years with the introduction of boys as part of the school’s move to co-education, and our new pupils have settled in seamlessly. Coopersale Hall’s Kindergartens have purpose-built large classrooms and extensive grounds with play equipment for the younger children. As is all the Oak-Tree Schools, the wrap-around care is very popular with parents looking to balance work and children’s school lives. We believe that with the new introduction of senior pupils in September, our youngest children will benefit greatly from having such positive older role models from which to learn.

At Normanhurst, feedback has been excellent about children continuing their educational journey from Kindergarten up through the school to age 16, as staff and pupils at all levels have outstanding relationships that help with the children’s personal development. Parents particularly love the Friday ‘Welly Walks’ to Epping Forest where our pupils enjoy learning outside of the classroom.

Current and prospective parents at Oaklands are very positive about the flexible sessions in Kindergarten. Like with all schools in the Oak-Tree Group, parents are able to choose the sessions their child attends. Parents have also commented on the seamless transition from Early Years to Reception for current pupils, especially as the Reception classes fill up so quickly, leaving relatively few places for new entrants. Parents enjoy that they can form relationships with staff from the very earliest opportunity, which develops trust and open dialogues as the children continue through the school.

Highgate Cemetery

(Below) Although it may seem a little macabre, Highgate Cemetery is one of England’s greatest treasures and one of the most peaceful, idyllic walks in the city. Notable writers, musicians, philosophers including George Eliot, Karl Marx, Jean Simmons, George Michael and Malcolm McLaren… and some rather well-off unknown individuals are laid to rest here. It has incredible architecture, mausoleums, and individual graves amongst an eerie gothic setting. A guided tour is well worth the cost, giving insight and knowledge of its fascinating history.

Hyde Park

Once the hunting ground for Henry VIII, this large royal park is best known for its famous Speakers’ Corner and Serpentine Lake, home to waterfowl and oarsmen. The Lido is open for the summer with the Swimming Club open all year round so brave folk can swim in frigid waters, sometimes as cold as 4C. Dip your toes in the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain or just admire the views across the lake from a waterside café. Have a go at tennis, horse riding, or join the many joggers, walkers and cyclists enjoying the open air.

Richmond Park

(Above) One of London’s most breathtaking landscapes and among the best places to enjoy wildlife. The 1,012-hectare space is made up of woodland, grassland and ponds. But the park is best known for its 630 wild red and fallow deer –so have your camera ready! The park is a top UK site for ancient trees and supports a range of rare species including fungi, birds, beetles, bats, grasses and wildflowers. Try your hand at power kiting, horse riding or golf, or hire a bike for some off-road cycling along the Tamsin Trail then refuel at Pembroke Lodge tea rooms and enjoy distant views of St Paul’s Cathedral from King Henry’s Mound.

Bushy Park

At over 1000 acres, Bushy Park lies just north of Hampton Court Palace, Bushy is famed for its mix of waterways, gardens, and roaming herds of red and fallow deer. Visit the Upper Lodge Water Gardens, a historic gem hidden away in the north of the park. See if you can spot some of the arresting birdlife, from kingfishers to kestrels.

And enjoy a walk in the peaceful Woodland Gardens after fuelling up at the Pheasantry Café.

The Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill

The Regent’s Park (including Primrose Hill) covers 197 hectares, The park consists of formal gardens, shrubberies, sports pitches, rough grassland, a large lake, small enclosed wood and a canal with embankments. Regents Park also houses various structures and organisations both public and private, including the iconic ZSL London Zoo. Primrose Hill has a character all of its own, at the summit of this grassy hill are stunning panoramic views from 63 metres above sea level from six different viewpoints.

Battersea Park

With its gardens and sculptures offering the chance to escape through botanics and brief history lessons to far-flung destinations around the world, Battersea Park is one of the prettiest and most varied green spaces to walk in London. The Grade II-listed, 200-acre park boasts a spot of inner-city tranquillity - the Old English Garden: a walled hideaway in which a lily-covered pond and vibrant foliage is tended to by a Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winner. Battersea Park also holds a children’s zoo, a boating lake, and a playground.

Hampstead Heath

Stretching from Hampstead across to Highgate, a roam across beautiful Hampstead Heath takes you to the countryside. It has provided inspiration for countless films, books and poems. with its 320-hectare wood and 18 ponds - three of which are reserved for wild swimming if you can brave the elements! Climb up Parliament Hill, stop to admire the spectacular views and continue towards the stunning Kenwood House, renowned for its impressive landscaped gardens.

Greenwich Park

On a summer’s day, there are few better places to be than at the top of Greenwich Park. The 74-hectare space is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it overlooks the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Naval College, with the River Thames and Canary Wharf in the distance. Greenwich Park is an amazing mix of 17th century landscape, stunning gardens and a rich history that dates back to Roman times and a small herd of Fallow and Red deer, harking back to its royal hunting past. There’s also a children’s playground where kids can run around and exhaust themselves.

There are many more parks and open spaces to discover in London, all bringing a bit of countryside into the capital.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons

1,140 acres of countryside amidst the urban surroundings of Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston-upon-Thames. Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, the Commons provide an important home for wildlife With woodland, scrubland, heathland and mown recreation areas – and nine ponds. They are the home to a wide variety of bird, animal and plant life. Being an unfenced Common, the whole area is open to the public 24 hours a day throughout the year for visitors to explore, relax and unwind. You will also see avid horse riders from the nearby Wimbledon Village Stables.

Holland Park

Located in one of the most desirable areas in London. amble around its formal gardens, loop the woodland in the north of the park then follow the path into Kyoto Garden, a Japanese garden with stone lanterns, a waterfall and carp-filled pond. Look out for freeroaming peacocks all year round. The park also has an orangery, tennis courts and a cricket pitch.

FESTIVAL – the UK’s biggest touring celebrity food and music festival series – returns to Essex, serving up a star-studded line-up of celebrity chefs and charttopping music stars, including Sophie EllisBextor and Five.

Known as Gastro-Glastonbury, Foodies will visit Hylands Park, Chelmsford from 23rd – 25th June. Featuring live cooking demonstrations from top chefs drawn from the ranks of MasterChef, Great British Bake Off and Great British Menu, plus toprated Michelin-starred and award-winning chefs. Visitors will enjoy a jam-packed schedule of TV cooking show champions and award-winning chefs in the interactive live theatres. In the Chefs Theatre, celebrities will create their signature dishes, whilst in the Cake & Bake Theatre, star bakers whip up showstoppers.

In The Kids Cookery School, Foodies

SuperChefs make cooking fun and masterclasses in the Drinks Theatre include tutored Champagne, Beer, Cider, Cocktail and Wine-tasting. Visitors can browse the latest food trends in the Shopping Village, meet local producers in the Artisan Market and taste exotic dishes in the Feasting Tent –which features a mouth-watering range of street food from around the globe. Other attractions include a fairground, children’s activities, and family-friendly areas.

Big Mamma Group, who has just opened Jacuzzi in Kensington, will

be putting on an Italian extravaganza from its maximalist Trattorias.

Returning to Taste are some of London’s most loved dining spots including award-winning Sri Lankan restaurant Hoppers, Japanese restaurant Flesh & Buns, street-food stalwarts Roti King, and Taste veterans Burger & Lobster. mixology masterclasses and a relaxed drink with friends in true Italian style. Taste’s very own fan favourite the Cook School will be back featuring a five-star line-up of chefs sharing their tips and tricks in the kitchen.

For those wanting to level up their Taste experience, the exclusive VIP Lounge is back with a makeover for 2023. VIP guests will have access to intimate masterclasses, garden games, tasting sessions with top artisan producers, and for the first time, exclusive live music and DJ sets powered by KALAB, the online community for emerging artists.

All that feasting is thirsty work and guests can continue the party in style as much loved tonic Schweppes’ Cocktail Bar will serve up delicious drinks. Or escape with el Jimador Tequila, bringing you the freshest tequila cocktails in town.

BLOOM London Dry Gin will serve up a menu of four light and refreshing cocktails inspired by an English summer garden. Visitors can sit and enjoy their very own Gin-utopia with a live pianist and plenty of photo opportunities with a backdrop of fresh pomelo, chamomile, and honeysuckle — the three botanicals found in BLOOM.

Face the Sun

‘Use sunscreen every day’ is the ultimate skincare commandment. Dermatologists and beauty buffs alike agree that protecting your face from harmful UV rays – while simultaneously preventing wrinkles – should be a priority for everyone.

“Skin is the body’s first line of defence from everyday external aggressors which damage your skin such as UV rays,” says Prof Christian Aldridge, consultant dermatologist for LifeJacket Skin Protection.

“The damage from these can have cosmetic, physical and long-term health consequences. At best, it can age your skin and cause you discomfort but at worst, can give you a skin disease you really don’t want.”

That’s why daily protection of your skin is critical, particularly on those areas that are exposed to the sun regularly, such as your face. But in spite of all the warnings we receive, the message isn’t getting through to everyone.

A new survey from LifeJacket and Melanoma UK found that 10% of respondents rarely use SPF, while one in 20 says they never use it.

To make it more likely you’ll stick to a daily habit, finding a product you love can be a huge help – attempting to rub a thick, chalky cream into your skin is not the answer.

The good news is, facial sunblocks have come a long way, and there’s a whole new batch of lightweight but effective lotions, serums and gels that are a delight to use – and many of them are under the £20 mark.

“To adequately protect your face, I recommend 5ml (about a teaspoon) of SPF of at least 30 every day,” says Aldridge.

“Especially during the months of April to September, to ensure long-term skin protection. Application should be repeated if outside for long periods or undertaking exercising in the light.”

It’s no secret flowers are one of fashion’s most enduring love affairs – and this season is no exception.

“We believe florals never go out of fashion,” says Zoe Donovan, digital and marketing director at LK Bennett. “As a brand, we focus on investment pieces that can be worn time and time again, dressed up and down. And a beautiful floral silk dress ticks many boxes.

“This season, we’ve reimagined incredible vintage archive prints, bringing a unique feel to a number of florals, including an 18th-century meadow scene.”

Another fan, Jo Collins, head of womenswear design at FatFace, says florals aren’t going anywhere.

“After the past few years, we see people looking towards trends that are optimistic and uplifting. This is especially played out in this season’s palettes and the print explosion we’re seeing.”

Mood-enhancing and easy to pull off, here’s what’s in bloom…

MODERN MEADOW

“Lilac has been an emerging trend colour for a few seasons,” says Collins. “It can be tricky on some skin tones, but we’ve treated this very much as a background colour to overlay the season’s pops of apricots and nude pinks.” This ‘on-trend’ colour is ideal for layering up, and would work well for a high summer event, says Collins. And,

with wedding season coming into play, these freespirited wild flowers can be accessorised with a floral fascinator or headband.

BOLD, BLOUSY BLOOMS

“Our customers are still embracing the versatility of the midi dress and we’re excited to introduce great new silhouettes and prints this season,” says Queralt Ferrer, director of design for fashion at John Lewis. “Our in-house design team has introduced graphic tile prints, block colours and bold florals; giving customers a fresh take on the floral midi for spring/summer.” Fusing full blooms with a puffy shorter sleeve will take you seamlessly through the seasons… save your heels for after-hours.

DITSY FLORALS

Ditsy prints and darling buds look casual and laid-back, but with a little bit of attitude. Wear with trainers and a denim jacket over your shoulders to nail the look.

One of fashion’s favourites, can you ever have too many maxi dresses? We think not. Whether it’s a tea dress or empire line, the flowing silhouette is flattering and feminine. Spring’s standouts come in two-tones, with floral detailing focusing on a prominent shade. Think vibrant pink or cornflower blue to build on your enchanted garden, err, wardrobe.

As the weather starts to (slowly) warm up, it’s time to rethink your beauty routine. When temperatures change and the sun shines a bit more consistently, the same products you used in winter won’t be quite as effective. Your hair and skin will have different needs – and these are the changes you should make to accommodate this…

WEAR BROAD-SPECTRUM SPF

You should be doing this all year round, but slapping on the SPF becomes even more crucial as the weather warms up and we see what Dr Carlos Charles, 4.5.6 Skin chief medical officer and co-founder, describes as “increased daily ambient outdoor ultraviolet light”. He recommends adding sun protection into your routine as early as spring – even if it doesn’t feel that warm. “In my patients with a more fair complexion I’ll start to see mild sunburns and an uptick in sun spots known as solar lentigines in the early spring months,” Charles says. “In patients with darker melanin-rich skin tones I’ll begin to see exacerbations of the pigmentary disorder known as melasma, as well as more intense examples of various types of hyperpigmentation.” Charles – who has spent most of his career treating melanin-rich skin – adds: “The best way to mitigate the hyperpigmentation is through the strict daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.”

COMBAT INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION

“In the warmer weather when temperatures and humidity rise, our sebaceous glands tend to overproduce sebum to keep skin hydrated,” explains Charles. “Even those who have normal skin may find their complexion becomes more oily or greasy. This is true across skin tones, but particularly for those with darker skin.” However, oilier skin doesn’t mean you should start triplecleansing. “One of the most common mistakes I see patients make when their skin gets oily is overcleansing to remove the excess oil. Unfortunately, this creates the opposite effect, as it can send the sebaceous glands into overdrive, producing more sebum,” says Charles. Instead, he recommends using “gentle and non-stripping” cleansers and adopting ingredients that will combat the increased oil production, such as salicylic acid.

BOOST THE MOISTURE IN YOUR SKIN

Charles continues: “Another mistake I see patients make when their skin gets oily is skipping their moisturiser – or worse SPF – for fear of looking shinier. “It’s always important to keep skin wellnourished and hydrated so that sebaceous glands don’t overcompensate.” Equally, Dr Preema Vig at Dr Preema London recommends using products with ingredients that will boost your skin’s

GIVE YOUR SCALP SOME LOVE

Skincare doesn’t stop at your face. “In the summer months, our scalp can often be neglected and suffer – whether that be from sun exposure and sweating to tying the hair in restrictive, high-stress ponytails due to the heat,” says Munir Somji at DrMedispa. “These hairstyles, alongside heat damage from the sun, can cause hair to lose volume and break easily.” That’s why it’s important to give your scalp some love during the warmer months – by wearing looser ponytails, using targeted treatments or even giving yourself a scalp massage.

DON’T FORGET YOUR EYE AREA

“Skin can become red and inflamed during the summer months, caused by blockage and inflammation of your sweat ducts,”

says aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Sabrina Shah-Desai. “Don’t forget to treat your eye area. When it comes to the delicate eye area, think about investing in some slightly larger sunglasses for extra protection, alongside a product to treat any pigmentation and protect.”

PROTECT YOUR HAIR, TOO

It’s not just your skin that needs SPF –your hair could benefit from it too when the sun starts shining. “Warmer weather can cause your hair to become dry, frizzy and more prone to breakage due to increased exposure to UV rays, humidity and sweat,” says GHD UK ambassador and celebrity hair stylist Samantha Cusick. “The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage the proteins in your hair, which can lead to dryness, brittleness, and breakage. Additionally, sun exposure can also cause your hair colour to fade and lose its vibrancy.” The key to protecting your hair from the sun’s rays? Cusick recommends “wearing a hat or using a hair product that contains SPF”.

BATTLE THE FRIZZ

“Humidity can cause hair to absorb moisture from the air, which can lead to swelling and frizz. This is because hair is made up of keratin proteins, which can change shape when exposed to water. Additionally, the moisture can disrupt the hydrogen bonds in hair, leading to frizz,” Cusick explains. To beat the frizz, opt for anti-frizz products and always use heat protectant – and Cusick recommends using a tool such as the GHD styler that goes up to 185 degrees: “The optimum temperature to style hair,” she says.

I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.

My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.

As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”

Illuminating the streets, showrooms, salons, patios, parlours and palazzos of Italy’s style capital, Milan’s inimitable furniture fair Salone del Mobile got its glorious groove on last month, as the interiors glitterati from around the globe descended. With the air humming with anticipation and energy, there were unveilings at every turn as the industry’s most luxury brands presented pieces that will come to define the next interiors season.

Our homes have come a long way since we were last here. Namely, we spent 2022 throwing the doors open and letting nature in, from every bucolic colour to organic shapes and new found-in-nature materials, creating a soothing, sometimes ethereal, mood. This year? Things are ramping up. Statement colour is here, bringing with it doses of joy, happiness and hopefulness. Textures are growing bolder, adding playful twists to elegant pieces, and shapes have taken a turn for the whimsical. Our homes are becoming places which make us smile – while remaining stunningly beautiful and carefully considered, of course. It’s an elusive balance, but one which is merged into

individual designs to make curation all the easier and more enjoyable.

TEXTURES

CHUNKY BOUCLE

There is boucle and then there’s heavy, oversized, statement boucle, and it was big, brazen bumps that dominated Salone del Mobile 2023’s upholstery. A way to give life to neutral shades and add extra oomph to colours, bold boucle says, ‘Here’s where the funs at,’ inviting hands to nestle in and explore. With the larger looped pieces in the fabric creating a thicker texture and deeper shadows, the oversized boucle gives a light-hearted wink to whatever it’s covering, be it framed with an exquisite piece of crafted walnut or topped with bright, furry cushions.

RIDGES

Creating subtle yet characterful decoration, ridged markings and upholstery hit Salone hard, with furniture and accessories alike adorned with subtle stripes cut into solid materials and tailored onto the soft. Instantly adding a three-dimensional

effect and forming a layer of shadows, ridges pull the eyes into them, highlighting the contrast they create and inviting you to re-examine their base material. The overall effect is one of craft and delicacy, the lines emerging gradually to form a pattern that’s simple and striking.

TEXTURED GLASS

The ambience this year is hazy, dreamlike and illusory as textured glass takes over, casting beautiful, almost watery, shadows which transform a room into something ethereal and otherworldly. From textures embodying the organic to gentle patterns, in furniture, large textured glass slabs create the illusion of water frozen mid-movement, while lighting is embracing ever-so distorted glass shades, throwing a layer of mystery over their surroundings come nightfall.

COLOURS

PRIMARY TONES

At the top of the brightness scale this year are vivid, primary tones as interior design trends for 2023 take a turn for the kaleidoscopic. Playful and nostalgic, these happy shades remind us of our youths and bring intense splashes of energy inside. Introduction on simplistic designs big and small which let the colour itself create impactful bursts of joy and positivity.

MEDITERRANEAN TONES

Sunkissed, Mediterranean, earthy tones are where it’s at for colour that makes a statement without being too dazzling. Green has been the darling of the interiors world for several seasons as we’ve sought to become more grounded, and this year a rich olive has emerged as the trending tone. Falling somewhere between neutral and bold, it speaks not only of nature but of tempting warmer climes and endless lazy days. Sun-baked terracotta red also dominated, the brick-like tone conjuring even more tranquil images of tiled roofs disappearing into the horizon. And relax.

DUSKY

PINK

For something colourful as well as calming, it’s dusky pink all the way. Suspended between pink and grey, this isn’t a sickly, classically pretty tone, but rather a dash of sweetness to top off a room. Used on accent pieces: a chair here, a cushion there, maybe the odd sofa – the hazy shade creates a slightly dreamlike feel, a sense of whimsy that’s at once delicate and daring.

TAN UPHOLSTERY

Smooth, buttery soft, tan leather is all we’ll be sitting on this year. A tempting toffee tone took over sofas, chairs and upholstery in general across Salone, its laid-back vibe nodding towards the 70s and drawing attention to the beauty of shapes, tailoring and material combinations. With more punch than beige, think of it as an easy-yetstatement neutral, its milky, flat white-esque shade relaxed as well as elegant.

Textured materials are one of the hottest trends in kitchen design right now so we spoke to local kitchen design company Urban Myth to ask how you can incorporate this popular style into your home.

Designing your perfect kitchen involves making a range of decisions regarding the style, colour and design of the kitchen and one key design choice is the role of texture, we asked Senior designer at Urban Myth Marzena Moks Rodrigues why texture is so important.

To help you realise how to include texture in your home here are Marzena’s 5 ways to add texture to your kitchen design.

Textured Cabinets

Adding textured door fronts to your cabinets can give your design an unique look that will really stand out. Stone or wood veneer are great options which are durable and easy to keep clean.

Metallics

Soft and reflective metallics such as copper and bronze or natural tones such as brown on green are popular at the moment . Achieving this look in your kitchen can be done in two ways. For a more subtle approach you can accessorise this trend with door handles, taps, or sinks. Or if you’re fully committed then there are some fabulous kitchen cabinets available with metallic patinas that will truly make your kitchen unique.

Concrete

Industrial finishes are increasingly popular and none more so than concrete. Previously it would be a difficult process to achieve a real concrete finish, but with advances in material technology, manufacturers have created several options available in Quartz or Solid surface to get this look.

Textured backsplash

The backsplash is an integral part of your kitchen design, and a great place to layer texture. Tiles are a fantastic way to do this and can contrast and complement your design. We also see many customers running the worktop material all the way up the wall, this gives the illusion of more space and also shows off your choice of worktop.

Statement Wall

If you’d prefer to make a bit of a splash with texture in your kitchen, consider a statement wall. Easy to undo if you decide to make a change in future, but large enough to make a significant impact to your interior, statement walls are a wonderful place to experiment with texture..

How to encourage GREEN-FINGERED KIDS

Get your children into gardening with these easy-to-grow veg and salad options. By Hannah Stephenson.

The school holidays beckon and with that, the urge to get your children into the garden, or at least let off steam in the open space.

If you’re short of ideas to keep them amused, be reassured that the kids can still sow vegetables and other seeds now and into the middle of June, which should germinate quickly to produce tasty and colourful salad leaves, edible flowers and healthy veg.

Almost one in three amateur gardeners has gained inspiration for gardening from their parents, according to YouGov research from Readly magazine app – so there’s no better time to start.

Welsh specialist kitchen gardener, best-selling author and YouTuber Huw Richards, who has 730k followers on his channel, selects the following choices which can still be sown and are also suitable for containers:

PEAS

“Peas are my favourite. When you eat fresh peas straight from the pod they are so sweet and are

like little snacks. Children can eat the pea shoots as well, two or three weeks after sowing, which means they don’t have to wait too long, so it feels like a fast turnaround. “I’d recommend a mangetout or a sugar snap if they want to eat the whole pod.

‘Oregon Sugar Pod’ sugar snap is a great variety, while the ‘Ambassador’ pea is widely available. The seeds are dried peas, so easy for little hands to manage.”

Growing tip: Start them off in pots or plant directly into the soil, 2cm deep, in a sunny situation. You can sow peas until mid-June, he says.

RUNNER BEANS

“These have a bigger seed size than peas, so are very easy to handle. They can grow to about 2m and children can enjoy the beautiful red flowers and the bumble bees that visit them. “The beans that you sow are pretty, pink with black dots, so are very visual. Easily assessable varieties include ‘Scarlet Emperor’.”

Growing tip: Grow them on a south-facing boundary or wall and stake them with canes, or make a wigwam to grow them up.

PUMPKINS

Any children who love Halloween may enjoy growing their own pumpkins, Richards suggests. “These are quite a bit of fun and surprisingly simple to grow but need a bit more space.” As well as carving faces in the pumpkin come autumn, you can also tip the seeds out, coat them with cinnamon and roast them, to give the children a healthy snack, he suggests. “If you are looking for something to fill up an empty corner, a single pumpkin plant will do that for you. It grows fast and every day the children check the plants and the pumpkins. Maybe they can take a ruler out to check how long the plant is or how wide the pumpkin is.”

Growing tip: Sow seeds until the end of May. They prefer a sunny site and need a lot of compost to get started. Seedlings should pop up within a week. Good varieties include ‘Jack O’Lantern’.

NASTURTIUMS

“Children could plant a hanging basket or container with nasturtium seeds, which will produce bright flowers which they can later put into salads, for a peppery flavour. “The big seeds look like little brains and can be popped into the ground 2cm deep, or in a hanging basket. They grow really fast and trail or spread, creating a profusion of flowers usually in orange, reds and yellows. There will always be a bee on the plant when it’s in flower.”

Growing tip: Sow them up to mid-June and just a few seeds will create an array of colour. Just make sure the seedlings don’t dry out in the first few weeks.

SWISS CHARD ‘BRIGHT LIGHTS’

“This variety produces a rainbow of coloured stems in shades including white, pink, yellow, green, orange and red – and they look so cool. They are often planted in ornamental borders because of how beautiful they are,” he says. Swiss chard ‘Bright Lights’ is ideally grown in a bed or a large container. Sow seeds 1-2cm deep with 2cm between each seed and grow them as a ‘cut and come again’ crop which can add a burst of colour to any salad.

Growing tip: Keep the crop well watered and the seedlings will quickly appear and start turning different colours. They can be grown in sun or partial shade.

RADISHES

Sean Lade, director of Easy Garden Irrigation, adds that radishes are another must-have because they are ready for lifting just three to four weeks after sowing. “This short growing cycle is perfect for kids, who may not have the patience to wait for a longer-growing vegetable, and they come in a variety of colours and flavours, making them exciting for kids to experiment with and try new things,” he says.

Growing tip: Grow them in a sunny spot in well-drained soil with added compost about 1-2 cm deep and 2-3 cm apart, after removing stones, weeds and other debris.

To make it easier for children to sow the seeds, make a furrow with a stick and sprinkle the seeds along the furrow, covering them with soil and gently patting them down before watering. Thin seedlings as they grow, then lift radishes when the tops push out of the soil.

Consumer interest in green soars, according to new research from Victory Colours

First it was grey. Then blue. But it looks like green interiors are finally having their moment in the spotlight.

New research from eco paint specialists Victory Colours shows that consumer interest in green interiors has soared.
