Discover Auberge du Lac, the newly reopened lakeside restaurant in the spectacular grounds of Brocket Hall, a Hertfordshire stately home. Set in the estate’s historic former hunting lodge, the atmospheric venue – with its idyllic terrace – is a wonderful setting with warmth and charm that has been a foodie destination for many years.
A launch event at The Canopy, a brand new development of 25 luxury two bedroom, two bathroom apartments for the over-55s, brought together potential residents, the local community, and quiz-master Shaun Wallace from the ITV show The Chase.
Interested buyers, their families, and local residents celebrated the launch at an event that featured a quiz hosted by ‘Chaser’ Shaun Wallace. Six teams answered questions that covered a wide range of topics. Prior to and following the quiz there was Champagne and canapes supplied by local businesses, and the opportunity for guests to mingle and to have an informal look around the development that’s set in its own woodland. Despite a showery evening, the event was (mostly!) held on the Canopy’s spectacular roof terrace with its comfortable furniture, shelter, and wonderful views over the development’s green and leafy landscape

GRAYSON PERRY: A SHOW ALL ABOUT YOU
What makes you, you? Is there a part deep inside of you that no one understands? Have you found your tribe or are you a unique human being? Or is it more complicated than that? In the last few decades a combination of individualism, the internet and the culture war has, for many of us, brought our feelings about our own and other people’s identity to the fore. Grayson Perry, white, male, heterosexual, able bodied, English, southerner, baby boomer and member of the establishment takes a mischievous look at the nature of identity in his new show that will make you laugh, shudder, and reassess who you really are.

JEN BRISTER: THE OPTIMIST
After 76 sold out shows across the country Jen is extending ‘The Optimist’ tour for a third and final time…..
If middle age has taught Jen Brister anything, it’s that optimism does not come naturally to her. In fact it’s fair to say that her cup is very much half empty and she’s making no attempt to fill it. Can Jen work against her natural instincts and finally see the light? Or will she stay the same old pessimistic naysayer she’s always been. I mean, I think we know the answer to that, but let’s try and be optimistic. Palace Theatre, 430 London Road, Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 9LA

Set in the estate’s historic former hunting lodge, the atmospheric venue – with its idyllic terrace – is a wonderful setting with warmth and charm that has been a foodie destination for many years.
Continuing its story is Head Chef John Barber who joins the illustrious line-up of talented chefs in its history, including Phil Thompson and JeanChristophe Novelli.
At just 32 years old, John Barber has already
enjoyed an incredible career. Following an intensive apprenticeship at The Mandarin Hotel Group in London and Thailand, stints abroad in Paris with famed chef, Charcutier Gilles Verot, and New York at Bar Boulud, Café Boulud & Boulud Sud, John joined D&D Group and opened 14 Hills at 120 Fenchurch Street, London.
The opportunity to put Auberge du Lac back on the map following a three-year closure, has seen John relocate to Hertfordshire with his young family to start an exciting new chapter.
With his pedigree and passion, this young talent is creating a whole new dining experience

for guests. His vision? To make fine dining more accessible and relaxed, without any compromise on quality or taste.
Working closely with kitchen gardener, Lucy Hawkins, John is focused on sustainability and seasonality to enhance his modern British menu. Since joining the estate in May 2022, Lucy has transformed a one-acre site - using the no-dig method - into a fertile garden which is starting to supply Auberge with fresh produce all year round and support local biodiversity.
Dishes created by John make best use of her seasonal crops which are literally growing within metres of the tables where they will be served. This is soil-to-plate dining at its best.
As well as the exceptional la carte menu, there is a set weekly lunch menu, a seven-course tasting menu and weekly specials, allowing John to introduce more seasonal produce.
Considerate of the pressures of kitchen life and the wellbeing of his staff, John is an Ambassador for The Burnt Chef project which supports those in the hospitality industry with mental health issues. To support this cause, an optional discretionary £1 is added to the bill.

Highlights from the a la carte menu include dishes such as Sea Bass Ceviche, Duck Liver Parfait, Brill fillet on the bone, clams, Scottish girolles and Welsh Lamb, confit tomatoes, black olive tapenade.
All diners, whatever menu they choose, start with a Welcome Snack and wherever possible everything is made on-site including the bread and butter.
On Sundays, a three-course roast is served with all the trimmings and children’s portions are also available, making this magical restaurant more accessible for families.
Head chef John Barber isn’t alone. He has assembled a whole new team of talents together, including pastry Chef, Ariana Machado who learnt her craft at iconic London brasserie, The Wolseley. With traditional techniques and innovative recipes, Ariana is creating the most delicate and delicious desserts to complement John’s menus.
Front of house, it is Scott Foster who ensures that the drinks, atmosphere, and service, match the excellence of John Barber’s menu.
With a wealth of experience in luxury hospitality including running operations for The Galvin Brothers, a warm welcome awaits all guests, old and new.
SSince reopening in April, this driven and visionary chef is fast establishing Auberge du lac as a destination restaurant once again. Brightwell Motor Company
Essex-based Brightwell Motor Company specialises in the servicing, upkeep and restoration of classic cars to the very highest standards, including support on prestige events such as the legendary Mille Miglia.
The company has a dual reputation – for the quality of its work and the way it treats its customers. “Quite simply, we want to be known for being a nice bunch as well as a company that does the very best work,” says Brightwell founder Phil Parry. “The analogy is a restaurant with good customer service: it doesn’t matter how good the food is; if the service is poor, you won’t go back.”
Brightwell works on all makes and models of classic cars. Additionally, its team of project managers has decades of experience gaining expertise in particular marques, in particular Brightwell employs specialists in early Porsches, Mini Coopers, Jaguars, Aston Martins and Ferraris.

experiences having cars restored over the years and its investors are all classic car owners themselves. “What customers want is honesty, regular communication, photos of progress and explanations of what’s going on.
Brightwell does everything from simple servicing and troubleshooting of everyday classics to full nut and bolt restorations of extremely valuable collectors’ cars. They have a trimshop, which does the full range of coachtrimming work - including complex cabriolet hoods – whether bespoke or to authentic factoryoriginal spec.
Brightwell makes sure that you don’t just have a nice-looking car, but a well-put together one. “A restoration is so much more than body, paint and engine,” explains Phil. “Parts restoration, careful re-assembly and the interior are at least 50 per cent of the job. Classic cars that rattle, that have ill-fitting parts, excessive wind noise, vibrations and other niggles, soon ruin the fun.”
“Similarly, there are lots of classic cars that just need expert attention to bring them back up to scratch. We have a customer who has owned his Aston Martin DB5 for 23 years. After some mechanical and interior TLC, he told us that in all his years of ownership his car has never driven so well and he’s fallen in love with it again. That’s what it’s all about.”

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Protection. Prevention. Safety.
Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.
So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.
Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.
Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close
protection operatives do not spend each day toe-to-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence.
With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.
Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond.
Professionals in protection. Always on Guard. For more information visit westminstersecurity.co.uk or call 0207 123 4544

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN YOUR AREA
Life in the Seniors
At the Oak-Tree Group of Schools
Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Normanhurst School in North Chingford and Coopersale Hall School in Epping are all thriving ‘all through’ schools catering to students aged 2½ to 16 in the picturesque Epping Forest area. They constitute a large part of the privately-owned Oak-Tree Group of independent schools and offer a distinguished education that leads up to GCSE exams.
All-through Education
It is quite uncommon to encounter small local schools that guide students from the tender age of 2½ up to the pivotal GCSE exams at 16, all within a stimulating and nurturing environment. All-through education brings with it numerous advantages. There is the seamless continuity of learning from junior to senior phases that features smaller class sizes and bespoke learning programmes tailored to each child’s unique requirements. While many pupils transition internally from Year 6 to Year 7, there are also a number of places for external students to join in Year 7 and become part of the vibrant community.
A Vibrant, Active Environment
Life as a senior within the Oak-Tree Group is dynamic and brimming with activity, and the students wouldn’t have it any other way. When they’re not in class, they take up the raft of extra-curricular opportunities such as visits to the Olympic Park, the Globe Theatre or Stansted Mountfitchet Castle. Many spend their lunch breaks in the music rooms practising one of the many additional instrument lessons arranged by the school, such as the flute, guitar, drums or trumpet. Throughout the year, they stage a diverse array of productions, including festive Christmas
carol concerts, school plays or even captivating acapella performances. After regular school hours, pupils stay back to participate in sports fixtures, attend academic catch-up sessions, and engage in a variety of extracurricular clubs. During school holidays, many students take the opportunity to partake in residential trips that might include large international skiing or sporting tours.
Life Beyond GCSEs
Students are well-prepared for life after Oak-Tree. The schools offer tests in Year 10 to identify their strengths, with additional careers discussions and opportunities for work experience. Year 11 students go through mock interviews for Sixth Form and there are information evenings for both parents and students about Sixth Form options. Teachers write detailed references for each student, highlighting their academic achievements and contributions to the school. Every year, students successfully apply to various schools, including independent and state schools, and some even earn scholarships.
For those interested in joining the Oak-Tree Group, the 11+ Entrance Exams are held at Braeside, Normanhurst and Coopersale Hall on Tuesday 16th January 2024, with the 13+ Exams taking place on Friday 8th March 2024.

The Best Start In Life
Sixth Form Life at New Hall School is very special, not just because of our outstanding academic teaching and pastoral care, but because of the many exciting and varied opportunities that our students can access through our extensive co-curricular programme, Dr Stephanie Foster (Deputy Head of Sixth Form).
Within a supportive community, characterised by our ethos of care, trust and respect, New Hall Sixth Form provides an environment in which our students’ talents are nurtured to help them enrich and maximise their individual and collective development. Whether students choose to board or flexi-board in one of our dedicated Sixth Form Boarding Houses, or come to us as a day student, our Sixth Formers enjoy the chance to spread their wings, develop new skills, and forge new friendships.
Many of our Sixth Formers rise to the challenge of taking on a leadership role, such as Senior Prefect or as a leader in our New Hall Voluntary Service. Others take advantage of our state-of-the-art facilities to hone their sporting skills, whether it’s preparation for national swimming finals, or competing on the rugby pitch, playing hockey on the floodlit AstroTurf or perfecting technique on our newly resurfaced tennis courts or at the golf nets. New Hall has

The importance of SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…
•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….
Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure)
•What are the classroom sizes?
•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
•Is there a bullying policy?
•What lunchtime meals are available?
•What sports and music facilities are available?
•What after school clubs and trips are available?
•How many pupils branch out into further education?
After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

CROCHET CRAZE How to weave the Seventies look into your wardrobe
The hippy-dippy fabric is a massive trend this season, says Katie Wright.
The surprise hit ofthe season, colourful crochet is everywhere right now.
What started on the spring/summer 2023 catwalks as more of a laidback, seaside-inspired look – with cream, custard and khaki beach dresses at Gabriela Hearst, Khaite and Ulla Johnson – has bloomed into a rainbow-bright riot on the high street.
The fabric – which is created by using a hook to weave loops of yarn – has fallen in and out of fashion throughout the decades.
The hippy heyday of the Seventies saw a massive boom in crochet clothing, in particular garments made from a patchwork of ‘granny squares’.
More recently, London Fashion Week designer Christopher Kane (known for his love of ‘granny chic’) put black and blue crochet on the catwalk, styled with leather and latex.
Singer Harry Styles – known for his love of Seventies styles – has inspired fans to weave their own crochet cardigans after he was spotted on stage in a patchwork design.
According to Klarna Shopping Index research, shoppers are embracing the retro look in a big way, with sales of crochet items up 81% year on year.
The most popular garments are trousers (up 269%), shirts (193%) and skirts (140%).
So how should you wear the trend now? This year’s revival is all about fun in the sun.
A mesh dress or cover-up is a beachwear must-have if you’re jetting off somewhere hot on holiday.
For a subtle Seventies look, team a bright crochet vest with wide-leg or flared jeans or denim cut-offs.
Heading to a festival? Go bold with a ‘granny square’ dress in a cocktail of colours or co-ord set in this season’s hottest hue: emerald green.
Accessorise your look with some vintage-style cork sole wedges or espadrilles (another classic trend that’s making a comeback right now) and add a woven beach bag for a cute finishing touch.

What you eat – and when – could be impacting your slumber.
By Sam Wylie-Harris
Foods that could help you get better sleep
Wondering whether certain foods can affect your sleep patterns – or if eating certain things could actually help improve your sleep?
The relationship between diet, sleep and overall health is two-sided, says Gabi Zaromskyte, registered nutritionist and founder of Honestly Nutrition. “Meaning what we eat and drink affects our sleep, but also, the quality and duration of sleep can affect our food choices,” Zaromskyte explains.“Scientific research has increasingly shed light on the significant impact of dietary choices on cognitive function, mood, and overall physical and mental health,” she adds.
Certain dietary patterns and specific nutrients have been found to influence the sleep-wake cycle, sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), and sleep architecture (the different stages of sleep), notes Zaromskyte.
She continues: “And the quality and timing of our food and beverage intake can impact the production of sleep-regulating hormones, such as melatonin, which plays a critical role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.”
However, as Dr Maja Schaedel, co-founder of The Good Sleep Clinic points out, it’s important to understand that most research done so far shows that even though certain foods may be higher in melatonin, that does not necessary equate to falling asleep quicker.
“You may have higher levels of melatonin, but if you’ve got stuck in a bad habit of tossing and turning for two hours before drifting off, or waking at 3am and not being able to return to sleep, foods high in melatonin are not going to solve your problem,” says Schaedel.
She suggests that generally, it’s best to eat your evening meal at least two hours before bed, to avoid any indigestion, spikes in blood sugar and increase in body temperature that can occur while digesting.
“If you tend to get peckish later in the evening,
then plan a snack an hour or two before bed,” Schaedel adds. “It’s best to have something high in protein, like Greek yoghurt or nuts, and low in complex carbohydrates to avoid any spikes and falls in blood sugar.”
Also, it might be wise to avoid the usual culprits which can trigger discomfort. “Fatty and spicy foods can cause heartburn and indigestion which can hinder good sleep, as well as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco,” says Lisa Artis, deputy CEO of The Sleep Charity.

Cheese
“Cheese gets a bad reputation as it’s commonly believed to give us nightmares, but actually it’s the opposite,” says Artis. “Cheese, and other dairy products, contain tryptophan, an amino acid which helps us to nod off more easily, and calcium which helps to reduce stress.”
Cherries
To find out if foods with naturally occurring melatonin make a difference for you, Artis suggests giving cherries a go – particularly tart cherries, which have been found to naturally boost the production of melatonin. Zaromskyte says several studies have shown significant improvements in sleep quality and duration when consuming Montmorency cherries or tart cherry juice, where the concentration of naturally occurring melatonin and phytochemicals is higher compared to whole cherries.
Low sugar cereals
“Cereal can also help us to sleep – but we must be mindful of the type of cereal,” says Artis. “There
are lots of sugary options on the market, so try to avoid these.”
She says complex carbohydrate-rich foods increase the availability of tryptophan in the bloodstream which, in turn, may help us to nod off.
Bananas
Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium, potassium and tryptophan, says Artis. In other words, a great choice when it comes to supporting sleep. “While bananas have lots of great qualities for sleep, all fruit contains sugar too, so be mindful of this in the run up to bedtime,” she notes. “Try blending one banana with one cup of milk or soya milk to make an ideal evening drink.”
Almonds
“Almonds are a brilliant source of calcium and magnesium, which promotes both sleep and muscle relaxation,” says Artis. “Magnesium also helps to regulate melatonin levels and keep blood sugar levels stable overnight.”
Magnesium rich foods
Magnesium, an essential mineral, has been found to play a crucial role in sleep regulation – and can influence sleep quality and duration, says Zaromskyte. “It acts as a co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those involved in the production and regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones that impact sleep.” Some magnesium-rich foods cited to help improve sleep quality include pumpkin seeds, spinach, almonds and dark chocolate (which is packed with health-enhancing antioxidants too).
Omega-3 rich foods
Although research is limited, some evidence suggests foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may promote better, longer sleep, says Zaromskyte. “For example, walnuts are a source of melatonin and other sleep-regulating compounds, such as an amino acid tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids,” she says. “Other omega-3-rich foods include oily fish, like salmon, trout, mackerel and sardines, chia seeds and flaxseeds.”

Interior Trend Alert UNMUTED MINIMALISM
Colour – it’s here, and we’re rejoicing! Pigment has taken over the contemporary home, covering surfaces and dancing through rooms with its glorious joy de vivre and power to elevate atmospheres and moods. Be it a chromatic chair, a bright light or a vivid vase, chunks of colour in every size and shade are now permanent fixtures in our spaces, bringing smiles and moments of pure pleasure to life indoors.
COLOUR COLLISION
But how to work this new kaleidoscopic disposition into our existing aesthetic? We’ve long been building calm, cool, collected minimal interiors, often with a distinctly Scandinavian edge – do our beloved pale woods, worn leathers and calm, forest-inspired hues work with these new flashes of fuchsia, smatterings of scarlet and pops of periwinkle? The answer is yes, yes, a resounding yes – and heritage Danish design brand Fritz Hansen is showing us how to bring the two together while maintaining that characteristic Scandi cool.
IN VOGUE
Fritz Hansen’s soul-enriching spectrum of shades has been crafted by an expert editorial eye, that
of Italian magazine editor, gallerist, entrepreneur and all-round creative virtuoso Carla Sozzani. The curated 16-piece colour collection features vibrant hues as well as the more tonal, from bold True Yellow and Paradise Orange to soothing Dusk Blue and Pale Rose and rich Venetian Red and Burnt Yellow. Formulated especially for the beloved silhouettes of the Ant, Series 7 and Grand Prix chairs by Danish icon Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Hansen’s hues lead the way in introducing timeless colour to modern, Scandinavia-inspired home tones.
ORGANIC INFLUENCES
As well as the bold, the Fritz Hansen palette is infused with classic Nordic neutrals that seem touched by nature, such as Deep Clay, Light Beige, Olive Green and Nine Grey. The muted nature-tinted tones slide easily into modern spaces already filled with subdued stony, sandy, snowy and stormy shades, allowing the more pigmented side of the collection to smoothly integrate into the room to build a colourful yet distinctly Scandi interior landscape.
COLOUR MEETS THE CLASSICS
A tip to bringing brightness into the muted Denmark/Stockholm/Oslo/Helsinki-infused homes we’ve so lovingly nurtured? Look to

the region’s existing accomplishments to move forward. Legendary Scandi design objects have the power to merge classic Nordic style with unexpected colours, effortlessly mixing into contemporary collections with their recognisable, time-honoured forms and creating new technicoloured timelines.
THE EVOLVING ANT
An enduring symbol of mid-century Danish furniture design, the Ant chair was conceived in 1952, its curved seat made from a revolutionary innovation – a single piece of moulded veneer. Now released with an upholstered front shell,
the historic contours have metamorphosed, emerging butterfly-like in radiant shades of textile that add new life to the world-renowned form and pave the way for a pared-back collaboration with the rainbow.
LEADING LIGHT
Similarly, the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell lighting collection also harnesses a fresh finish to carry it into the world of colourful contemporary interiors. Created by Christian Dell in 1936, the lights are a symbol of iconic Bauhaus design, their geometric forms, precise engineering and uncluttered style pointing directly to progressive Modernism. Originally available in dark, moody tones, when coated in a cheerful new finish Ruby Red, the lamps become more friendly and accessible – a 2020s spin on 20th century avant-garde. The gravitas and historic significance of the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell easily grant it the authority to invite colour into the home, the enduring icon reflecting ultramodern Nordic sensibilities via a sophisticated splash of scarlet.

Blackberry Build ONE OF A KIND WITH YOU IN MIND
As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.
At a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.
NEW HOMES PROJECTS
My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.
As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”

How To Lounge
From laidback and loungey to upright and elegant, find your perfect sofa match in BoConcept’s New AW23/24 Collection with expert guidance from their Interior Design Stylists
Since it was founded more than 70 years ago in the golden age of Danish design, BoConcept has become known for their pared-back furniture that strikes a balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. For AW23, this philosophy manifests throughout their ‘New Kollektion’. But how can these new pieces fit into our homes?
Laying watching a movie, sitting reading a book, sinking into the cushions after a long day...when it comes to selecting a sofa, BoConcept asks, what’s your preferred lounging mode?
“It is very important to know the lifestyle of the customer”, says Lupe Cuervo, BoConcept Interior Stylist. “We always like to discover their tastes, dynamics and habits as a starting point. “For instance, do they have pets? Kids? Will they be entertaining a lot?”
It’s true, a good place to start when you’re thinking about making the investment is, how will I live with this sofa? Then, according to BoConcept’s interior design experts, size, style and comfort levels are the big three considerations.
“To ensure the right size, you have to know the measurements of the space and how many people are going to use the sofa”, says Héctor Velasco, Interior Stylist. Assess the dimensions of your living space and determine the sofa size that will best fit the room. Take into account the layout and consider whether a sectional or modular sofa would be more suitable for your needs.
For comfort, it is a question of “working on the ergonomics because each person is different”, according to Claire Lempereur, Interior Stylist. “Based on the persons’ size, the height and depth of the seat will be important considerations.” The best way to test this is to try the sofas out, according to Stylist David Edwards: “Try out the sofa we have on display and sit on them like you would at home. If you sit with your feet up, do that in the showroom. If you cuddle into the arm of the sofa then sit like this too.”
When it comes to style, Héctor Velasco always asks: “Are you looking for a modern sofa or a classic
one? Do you want a sofa with a specific design in mind?” Then there’s the fun part of choosing colours and fabrics – which should also be chosen with your family’s lifestyle firmly front of mind. Request fabric swatches, too, to see how they feel in your room.
“The material you choose is key, since it will frame the durability of the sofa”, says Velasco. “Do you want a leather sofa or a fabric one? What type of material is best for your needs and lifestyle? For example, if you have pets or small children, you may want to opt for a fabric that is durable and easy to clean.”
Lounge deeply with Salamanca
“Salamanca is very big, very soft and very comfortable. It’s designed not to live with but to live in”, says its designer Henrik Pederson. “There is no strict system to this bohemian style - play around with the cushions, find your favourite position and chill.”

“Laying watching a movie, sitting reading a book, sinking into the cushions after a long day...when it comes to selecting a sofa, BoConcept asks, what’s your preferred lounging mode”
With freestanding or modular versions available, the design also allows for customisation and flexibility with the moveable cushions. So how deep does it go? The super soft seats boast a unit depth of 112cm. Keeping with the ‘ultra comfort’ theme, the cushions create a cocooning effect thanks to their composition of 50% feathers.
Lounge elegantly with Berne
Berne combines clean lines with a timeless design, making it a versatile choice for all tastes. It also comes in three sizes – 2, 2.5 and 3-seater options - so works for large and more compact spaces.
Claire Lempereur recommends it for smaller living spaces: “It is a light sofa with simple and elegant lines. Its depth of 85cm allows it to adapt to small spaces”.
As for its lounge-factor, David Edwards recommends Berne for those seeking “a more formal seating position with the straight-ish back design”, he says. “Use low rectangular cushions on the base of your back for added seating comfort.”
Lounge socially with Carmo
With its bold cubic shape and generous proportions, the Carmo sofa exudes modern elegance. Don’t be fooled by the straight lines, this sofa is a dream to sit on, too.
Perfectly suited to open-plan living, the open end creates a welcoming atmosphere. The flexibility with the modular units means added comfort too.
“You can lounge on the Carmo with the help of the reclining module, have a chaise or add a footstool to the design”, advises David Edwards. Put your feet up, stretch out or use it as an extra seat – you won’t be sorry for choosing this comfortable chaise longue sofa.
Lounge stylishly with Modena
Organic shapes and minimal lines come together to create a contemporary expression with Modena. Its sleek design, characterized by slender legs and clean lines, creates a visually appealing aesthetic.
The low back combines with organic shapes for a minimalistic look that invites casual relaxation. “The Modena frame has a low profile that wraps around you”, says David Edwards. “This allows you to relax with your arms on both the back frame and the arms, which are at a comfortable height.” Modena is soft all the way around. With organic curves, the cushioned armrest makes this sofa perfect for a nap, too.

Introducing for Autumn: The Grow Your Own British Tree Kit
Atree takes a long time to grow up, but every year it will get taller and stronger - just like you.
Our brand new Grow Your Own British Tree Kit encourages children to form a lifelong connection with nature and contains everything they need to collect, identify and plant native tree seeds. Once they’ve planted their tree, they can watch it grow up alongside them in their own garden. A wonderful way of learning about our stunning native woodlands and the perfect gift to mark any milestone.
Components:
• Field Maple and Alder Tree Seed Pellets for sowing
• Wooden Plant Markers so that you know what you’ve planted and where.
• 9 beautiful British Tree Identification Cards in a Cotton Drawstring Bag – hand painted by our founding director Jo
• Helpful ‘How To’ Guide and Instructions.
• Peat Free Compost Disc.
• 13cm Sustainable Bamboo and Rice Plant Pot.
• Reusable Drawstring Jute Sack, to keep it all together!
Planting and then watching a tree grow alongside you, seeing it get stronger - like you, taller - like you, flourish - like you, is a wonderful experience. The reward of planting a tree seed is not instant, it takes time & requires patience. But the true reward, as with any new life, is witnessing a miracle. The inspiration for this kit came from my son’s tree. He planted an apple pip with his grandparents when he was a little boy. When it was strong enough, together they moved it to it’s final growing position outside of his bedroom window. Time has flown - he is approaching 30 years old and the tree is now taller than him. His tree bears fruit every year and is an anchoring reminder of his childhood and his magical relationship with his grandparents.

Will your flat roof keep you warm and dry this winter?
Are you concerned about potential leaks or costly water damage?
More than 70% of UK homeowners still have a traditional mineral felt flat roof. Over time extremes of temperature can result in this cracking and leaking. Once the felt starts to fail, water damage often goes unnoticed resulting in severe damage and inconvenience.
What to look out for:
If you see blisters on the roof surface or cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights you need to act fast.
Insurance companies will no longer accept liability for external or internal damage caused by leaking flat roofs that are more than ten years old. High-Tech offer professional roof replacement services using only the highest quality materials along with some of the most advanced flat roof technology available.
All flat roofs installed by us adhere to building regulations, are dimensionally stable and incorporate an anti-slip membrane strong enough to walk on.
