JACQUELINE EGGLESTON Interview with the New Head of Visitor Services INTERVIEW BY: MICHELLE HARRIS
Welcome to Jacqueline Eggleston, Epping Forest Head of Visitor Services, City of London Corporation. Michelle: Please tell us your plans for tourist attractions and an improved visitor experience? Jacqueline: Epping Forest is managed as a wild space but it is important to still interpret it so we can encourage new visitors. We will be doing more walks and trails beginning and ending with public transport hubs that you will be able to find on our website and through social media. We are making sure our main visitor hub areas – like Wanstead Flats and Hollow Ponds in the South, Chingford Visitor Centre Hub and High Beach - look the best they can, with new interpretation panels that explain where to go and what to look for. We are keen to get people to visit the Forest for the first time, but also to get current visitors to try somewhere new so we are planning bigger and better events that will entice people in to new spaces. Michelle: Which areas do you cover? Jacqueline: I have responsibility for the Visitor Centres at e View (Chingford), High Beach (currently being run by our fantastic volunteers from the Friends of Epping Forest) and the Temple in Wanstead Park - as well as the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge. Michelle: What are your long-term plans? Jacqueline: We are currently seeking museum accreditation for the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and e View visitor centre so we have more to do to manage our collections and we are revisiting our interpretation. I am really keen to encourage new events in the Forest - possibly woodland type fairs, special themed trails, festivals, art events, concerts and film screening.
Of course they will all need to work within the setting of the Forest and respect our SSSI status but we have some unbelievable backdrops – just think of A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed under twinkling lights amongst our ancient pollards or an evening of Tudor dance and food in the Hunting Lodge to the tune of the hurdy-gurdy, not to mention some of the larger scale events we could hold in our bigger open spaces. Michelle: Why do you feel Epping is a special area? Jacqueline: To have 6,000 acres of wild space winding its way almost in to the heart of London and accessible by tube and bus is a fantastic privilege and I am passionate about sharing it not just with Londoners but with the nation as we have so much nature and history here of national significance. Michelle: Any exciting news or special events? Jacqueline: Our Forest Focus newsletter is having a revamp and will now come out quarterly with a much bigger circulation. It is more focussed on the visitor and will have lots of useful information about visiting the Forest as well as all our forthcoming events, suggested walks and more in depth articles about the wildlife and history of Epping Forest. What’s more it’s free and can be picked up at our visitor centres and lots of other local outlets. ■

Savouring the sunshine (when it’s sunny) and just letting go of all the stresses and strains that are for most of us, the daily grind. ese precious four weeks feel like an infinite amount of time until that fateful day when you suddenly notice, Back to School deals and realise that the summer has ended.

It’s all about a stock take, taking some time out to cut off from the schedules which turn days into months, then years into decades… Holidays are wonderful – they punctuate our lives with milestones and enable us to have focussed
Whether professionally or personally, August is the perfect time to contemplate what we have done with our lives ere is a famous YOUTUBE video entitled “e Empty Pickle Jar – A Lesson on Life.” A professor stands at the front of his class and puts an empty jar, some golf balls and pebbles onto the table. Filling the jar with the golf balls he states they represent the important things in life such as health, family, work and responsibilities. Pebbles are then put into the jar and they fill the gaps. ese represent your hobbies, what you enjoy doing and how you work other activities around your bigger commitments. Finally, he brings out a bottle of chocolate milk because there is always time for chocolate. I feel this is about socialising or drinking with friends. Whether professionally or personally, August is the 1 8 AUGUST 2015
memories of specific good times either as a couple, friendships or as a family with our children. ey also facilitate some special time to just stop and think. Happy Holidays! ■

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
comes to Epping Forest
A
new ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ attraction has arrived at e View visitor centre in Chingford. e cabinet will house a rolling programme of exhibitions from the Epping Forest museum collections throughout the year. e City of London Historical Society donated the display case, which was presented by Members of the Society to Alderman Gordon Haines, the City of London Corporation’s Chairman of the Epping Forest Committee, at an event held at e View, Epping Forest’s Visitor Centre in Chingford, on 21 July. e first exhibition in the Cabinet of Curiosities will showcase the finds from Gifford Wood, including shells from the Second World War, clay pipes, a Victorian pocket watch and a medieval ring, and demonstrates the long and varied history of the site. Gifford Wood is a 30-acre forest extension, in Upshire, Essex, planted in 2013. e site is named Gifford Wood, after former Lord Mayor, Roger Gifford. e trees planted at the site are mainly be native oak and hornbeam, to reflect the mix of veteran trees for which Epping Forest is the most important site in the UK, and indeed in Europe. But the project also includes a mix of

alder, birch, beech, cherry, field maple, rowan, small lime, wild apple, wild service, holly and yew. Gordon Haines, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest Committee, which manages the ancient woodland, said: “We are extremely grateful to receive this wonderful new display case which has been generously funded by the City of London Historical Society. e Society had been inspired by a visit to Gifford Wood last year, as well as the fascinating historical objects discovered there. It is so kind of them to have provided us with this great space in which to display such finds, which help us to tell the amazing story of this unique and ancient woodland.” e View, Rangers Road, Chingford, E4 7QH is open daily from 10am to 5pm. ■

Now in its 23rd year, it is a city-wide celebration of the buildings, places, and neighbourhoods where we live and work. This year stunning new additions from across the capital will include stylish designs that display creative solutions - to building on difficult or overlooked sites, including Courtyard House by Dallas Pierce Quintero – a 95sqm house built within the walls of an infill site shortlisted for an RIBA award, and Tin House by Henning Stummel Architects, which makes use of an irregular urban site with interconnecting pavilions arranged to define a serene courtyard. Open House welcomes imaginative conversion Raw House from Mustard Architects – a lightfilled home with industrial aesthetic, recently featured on Grand Designs and winner of Third Place in the NLA ‘Don’t Move, Improve’ awards. There will also be the chance to view Trevelyan House, a modern redesign of a maisonette within classic 1950s grade II listed Denys Lasdun building in Hackney. Open House will be a unique opportunity to see, explore and learn about amazing architecture and design in your area and across London over one weekend. More than 700 buildings of all kinds will open their doors across London, alongside a programme of walks,engineering and landscape tours, cycle rides and experts’ talks – all for free. e Brruce has announced on BBC Radio 2 that the en Amerrican music legends The Jacksons are to headline American A aat this year’s BBC Proms in the Park in Hyde yde Park – the annual Last Night of the Proms specctacular broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Jacksons are one of the he world’s best-loved bands with a career spanning for more than n 40 years. Originally led by Michael Jackson, the band’s founding g members Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon Jackson now perform around the world in tribute to their brother. The stars of disco and soul sang some of the biggest hits to come out of the 1970s and 1980s, including Blame It On The Boogie, ABC, I’ll Be There and Can You Feel It - and at Proms in the Park, will take to the Hyde Park stage in a live set that promises to get everyone dancing and into the Last Night of the Proms party spirit. CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL COMES TO LOUGHTON

ifeWorks Creative Arts Centre and Loughton Methodist Church are hosting a unique Community event next month. e Creative Loughton Festival, funding by Loughton Town Council, is free and runs from Tuesday 25th until Sunday 30th August. e Festival gives an opportunity for everyone to get involved with creative arts in exciting and fun ways and, at the same time, experience the best of Loughton’s local talent. Every day there will be different workshops run by local professionals with something for all ages. Workshops include drawing, photography, baking and a session on West End Stars for ages 6-12. Interactive art projects will be happening in Loughton High Road from Tuesday to Friday, including a dress-up photo booth, a community chalk mural and a hanging fabric project. An art exhibition “e Spirit of Loughton” will be held in the LifeWorks building which is situated behind Loughton Methodist Church. Performances by local musicians will celebrate the opening of the art exhibit on the evening of Tuesday 25th August.

Loughton Youth Project is running an Urban Arts themed programme with dance and rap workshops. ere will also be a classical music performance for parents and toddlers. Every evening there will be performances by local acts including Big Mouse Tree House, Buster’s Band, and the Red Balloon Family. A Fun Fair comes to town on Saturday 29th at Loughton Methodist Church with a BBQ, family activities, arts workshops, stalls, and bouncy castles. Also a roadshow run by LYP Radio featuring the very best of local talent. To wrap up this exciting arts week the whole community is invited to a celebration service at Loughton Methodist Church On Sunday 30th August at 10.30am. ■

t the end of a busy day, or even first thing on a Sunday morning, the sofa can seem an inviting place. While some seats are merely practical, sofas are all about comfort and relaxation, right? Somewhere to slouch in front of your favourite TV show, or curl up with a good book. Don't forget about your posture, though. We all know that sitting up straight is important when we're sitting at a desk - and sofas are no different. So show your spine some settee TLC, with these simple tips… DON'T SLUMP If you sit slouched, or slightly hunched over, you're likely to be piling the pressure on your lower back as it has to cope with the weight of your upper body. You'll need to strengthen your core and buttock muscles. MAKE SUREYOUR LOWER BACK IS SUPPORTED If there's a big gap between your lower back and the chair you're sitting on, you may need to make some adjustments (and this is something you should also keep an eye on if your job is a desk-bound one). Try and make sure your knees are level with your hips by adjusting your seat, or find yourself a foot rest. PLANTYOUR FEET FLAT ON THE FLOOR It's highly tempting to cross your legs nonchalantly, like that posh couple on Gogglebox, when you're watching TV (particularly if you have a glass of G&T in your hand). But this

can put pressure on your lower back over time. So try and keep your feet on the floor and resist the urge to cross them or tuck them under you. AVOID 'TEXT NECK' Many of us go from spending our nine to five bent over a computer keyboard to whiling away the evening hunched over a phone or tablet. In fact, smartphone users now spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads lowered. is can lead to that all too common feeling of being stiff and sore around your upper back, shoulder blades and neck. Save yourself a fortune on pricey massages and try lengthening your neck as you tuck in your chin as an exercise. Alternatively, why not go old school and give someone a call instead of texting them? DON'T GET STUCK IN A RUT When there's a particularly gripping TV show on, it can be easy to develop the kind of rigor mortis seen in a Silent Witness corpse. But try and move around a bit to boost blood circulation. Shift position every half hour or so, or get up and walk around - even if it's just over to the kettle and back. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED Working on your posture takes time and effort - it feels a lot comfier lounging under your blanket than sitting up straight. Why not get your partner, kids or friends on board for the posture crusade? When one of you looks at risk of slumping like a soggy-bottomed cake on Bake Off, give each other a gentle nudge. Your backs will thank you for it. ■

whole facial contours can make an individual look almost caricature. Also when you look at a person you should normally be drawn to the eye area, if you are not then it's usually because something else on the face is exaggerated. By addressing all areas of concern at once, everything on the face matches artistically, which leads to the most natural-looking results. PEELING AGENTS Simple, safe, non-invasive and unbelievably effective when administered correctly, they are a fabulous route to improving the condition of your skin without the need to take time off work or play. Ideal for younger skin that tends to suffer more with blocked pores and acne like symptoms. Alpha hydroxy acid derives from sugar cane, it works by loosening the 'glue-like' attachments of cellular cement that is characteristic of many skin conditions such as premature ageing due to too much sun exposure and sun bed use, acne, discolouration and coarse bumpy skin texture. HITTING THE SPOT Just when we think we’re over the unpredictability of skin complaints, along comes another without any obvious cause. Rosacea may seem like the last straw but with the gentle approach from Ayurveda, all is not lost.
I
n short, rosacea is an inflammatory disorder of the skin that manifests itself on the face – particularly around the nose area – as a pronounced ruddiness (perhaps as if you have been in a strong wind for too long), enlarged blood vessels, and sometimes eruptions of acne. We often think those red, spotty days are long behind as we head confidently into our 30’s, however rosacea is most common between the ages of 30 and 50. ere is no universally recognised caused for the condition but changes to diet and skin care have proved to be successful. As we have discussed over the past few issues of Chigwell Life, in Ayurveda, everyone is made up of a different combination of the three doshas (energies, or mind/body types) and one dosha usually dominates affecting personality traits, body composition, and tendencies towards certain disorders. Just to give you a quick recap (this is always useful when considering Ayurveda to help with your particular concerns): • ose with a dominant vata dosha tend to be more slender, cool and pale • Kapha types tend to be heavier and slower • Where pitta is dominant there is a tendency to ‘run hot’ or become easily inflamed

important to look beyond the symptoms and recognise the cause. Studies have shown that there is a connection between rosacea outbreaks and digestive difficulties and as the small intestine is the ‘home’ of pitta energy, rosacea can result from the ingestion of pitta-aggravating foods. is is why at Arissa our full lifestyle consultation is so effective. Inspired by the Renaissance which saw the birth of perspective tive in art, the designers have created a landscape pe of shapes which will emphasise the visitor’s r’s viewpoint at the entrance to the bridge. The overlapping of semi-transparent colours willl create a void and feeling of depth while the arrangement rangement of the tiles on the floor will represent sent the grid and perspective lines on a drawing. g. A family in Essex has transformed their home into a place to relax and have fun with an indoor swimming pool from Origin Leisure.
M
att and Kerrie Smith moved from London to a detached home in rural Essex with their three children four years ago. Having spent the years updating their country retreat by refreshing the dĂŠcor, they wanted to make a big improvement to suit the

whole family. After visiting a friend with a new indoor swimming pool, the couple began investigating the possibility of building a pool house in their garden. Since speaking to Origin Leisure, they haven’t looked back.

GOING FOR GOLD e couple first had the idea during the 2012 Olympics. “My son has a friend who has an indoor pool and seeing the amount of flexibility it gave to the family was what swayed our decision”, explains Kerrie. “ey could have a number of children over at the house, all happily playing in the pool all day. Our kids, aged six, ten and 13, are at the age now where kicking a ball outside isn’t enough to keep them entertained for hours on end.” Andrew Ginger from Origin Leisure visited the couple and showed them other projects, while answering their questions about the build. “e second we met him we knew it was the right decision. Not only do they have 35 years’ experience, but the company understood what we wanted immediately. Most importantly, they were respectful of our budget. From start to finish they ensured we kept within our limit, with the end project costing £288,000”, says Kerrie. TICKING ALL THE BOXES As with most areas of the house, the children and the adults use the space differently. An indoor swimming pool is no exception - it had to be a space for the whole family to enjoy. “We needed it to tick all the boxes; entertain the children, while also being a space where the adults could exercise.” An indoor swimming pool from the Olympic range was tailored to fit the family’s lifestyle. “e pool needed to be shallow enough for our youngest to stand, but deep enough so adults could swim. e changing room had to be big for the children to all fit, while the sitting area is a place we can escape. It allows us to disappear from the house for a bit - almost like we’re on holiday!” e athletic couple also incorporated a gym and swim jet, making it the ideal space to keep active. “Matt is an impressive swimmer so the jet had to be powerful to give him a good enough workout. For me, a gym that overlooks the pool so I can be on the exercise bike while watching the kids swimming was essential.” On the outside, the building has been completed with reclaimed bricks to match the outside of the family’s six bedroom
property. Bi-folding doors open up so the family can enjoy the garden, despite the great British weather. “It can be chucking down with rain but it doesn’t matter – the children can still be outside playing and it’s safe and warm”, said Kerrie. DESIGNING THE DREAM POOL From the tiles to the taps, Origin Leisure provided options for the couple to choose from. “We had an idea of what we wanted, having used Pinterest to gain inspiration. We’d recently helped my parents rebuild their house in New York with an architect, and wanted a similar style. Origin Leisure came back to us with great suggestions based on our design brief.” Building work started in July 2014 and was completed in November, 4 weeks less than expected. e family were impressed with the efficiency and speed of the whole process. “I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a turn-key project. With Origin Leisure there was never any question that it would be subcontracted, we had one point of contact and the whole thing was managed by them, from start to finish. ey were so polite and thoughtful, even going to the extreme of moving our children’s beloved Wendy house from one part of the garden to another to make room for the swimming pool.” A FUN AND FUNCTIONAL SPACE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Since making the decision to add an indoor swimming pool to their home, Matt and Kerrie haven’t been happier. “A swimming pool is the best thing we’ve done to the house and we wouldn’t think twice about doing it again. We knew we were going to enjoy it, but we absolutely love it. My advice to anyone thinking about investing in a swimming pool is not to think twice. I smile every time I look at the pool and it’s brought so much fun to our home.” ■

Life Magazine talks to Spanish property expert Peter Bowerman about buying and selling in the strengthening Costa Del Sol property market.

eter is a frequent contributor to the UK press and one of the panel of experts for Overseas Property Professional magazine, having spent most of is working life as a professional real estate agent and valuer. He is also the Managing Director of the successful "Overseas Dreams" real estate company on the Costa Del sol with registered offices in Both Marbella and La Cala de Mijas. Peter tells us about the property market in general and advise on buying and selling.
MATURING PROPERTY MARKET Today's Costa del Sol property market has finally come of age and a lot more predictable than the boom & bust days of yesteryear. When the going got tough and agents had to start working hard for the fewer sales, many of the larger ex timeshare real estate agencies with their "sling enough mud at the wall and see whats sticks" attitude have now gone into liquidation, tarnishing many agents reputation on the Coast. However professional businesses like our's operate a very honest service and continue to grow. e property market is definitely moving again with up to 30% increases in registered sales towards the end of 6 6 AUGUST 2015
2014 and now house prices along the Mediterranean coast actually showing a slight rise in price (March 2015) in the recent house price index, published by Tinsa, one of Spain's largest valuation companies.
SELLING ADVICE If you're thinking about selling, now could be a good time with all the renewed interest in the Costa del Sol. After 24 years helping people buy and sell, I can confidently say that after choosing the right agent, the next most important decision is choosing the correct initial marketing price. is is because the first 3 months of marketing usually offer the best selling opportunity, due to sales staff being excited about calling their clients and the serge of marketing that follows a new listing. All the potential buyers get to see the property and if it is priced competitively, it should sell reasonably quickly. Any normal person left to value their own assets, are naturally going to try as high a price as possible. Many weak or inexperienced agents will take on properties at any price set by the vendor, for fear that the vendor may be disappointed with the truth and call another agent. is is not actually helping the seller at all and nearly always leads to no sale. An experienced and professional agent will share his knowledge and give honest advise, even if it's not what the vendor wants to hear. We discuss what price similar properties have sold for

If you're thinking about buying a deal on the Costa del Sol, experts say now looks like the ideal time. in the area and show comparable properties currently on the market, so the vendors can themselves understand the true value and agree the correct marketing price.
BUYING ADVICE I have equally been advising home buyers and investors on which property is best suited to their personal requirements and which property will be the best for rental or long term capital growth, all very different acquisitions. I have based my whole career and future around property, which I genuinely feel is still one of the safest and most lucrative forms of investment available. You can also often get to enjoy your investment as well, by either living in or holidaying in the property. is may seem a bold statement, after the recent world recession and slow property recovery, however, look at everything else, that also crashed, would you for example want to gamble your money in the stock markets, or the few remaining banks and their low interest rates? History shows that with long term property investment prices always go up, even with all the fluctuations in-between. As long as you don't get carried away as many did in the last boom and buy far more property than you could possibly sustain, in the hope of a quick flip. Successful property investment is simply a matter of slowly buying up good properties at favourable prices and renting them out, eventually building a strong portfolio. You can then either keep the property as a form of pension or sell off for large gains in the future when the market value doubles or quadruples, as historically it usually does. Just like the game of Monopoly, you can't go out buying up everything and leaving yourself short of cash when you hit the occasional speed bump. You have to keep reserves so you are never forced to sell at the wrong time, you want to buy now while prices are low and sell later when the market is strong again.
