BOURNE AGAIN

E

arlier this year, the National Trust announced that they would be opening Bourne Mill in Colchester to the public five days a week for the first time. Such has been the interest in this unique property since opening its doors that the mill will open again in 2016. Many pedestrians and motorists will have passed-by the Tudor grade-one listed working watermill without realising its importance and intriguing history. e Mill was built in 1591 on or near the site of an older watermill owned by St John’s Abbey that dated back to 1106. Standing on a dam across the Bourne Brook with a commanding view of the pond, the Mill was built with two purposes in mind – milling and providing a place for genteel entertainment. Its builder, Sir omas Lucas, was an upwardly mobile public servant and dignitary keen to impress distinguished guests and the Mill offered the refined sport of angling. How the day-to-day business of a tenanted working mill grinding flour and later fulling wool-cloth fitted in with the Lucas family’s grand gatherings is unclear. e Mill saw tough times, going back to milling grain after the collapse of the cloth trade but work finally stopped in 1935 when the main shaft broke. Used as a quirky home, the Mill has 1 0 OCTOBER 2015

been open sporadically to the public since the National Trust took it on in 1936, but they are confident that as a fully-fledged visitor attraction they have finally found its true calling. House Manager, Jules Armour said: Bourne Mill is a real undiscovered gem, a sort of historical Jekyll & Hyde with the genteel and industrial tales both present at the same time; trying to figure out how things would have worked is a real puzzle. We’re really pleased to have opened such a wonderful building regularly this year and encouraged by how many people have visited so far this year. We are delighted to have received such amazing feedback. Once standing just outside Colchester, Bourne Mill still retains an air of tranquillity, a place of natural beauty and escape not far from the centre of the town which has crept around it. e abundance of nature makes it a great place for families who can do pond-dipping or enjoy a walk down the nature reserve trail that runs alongside the Bourne Brook. For those in need of refreshment a cream tea or coffee and cake can be enjoyed whilst sitting beside the pond. When the great waterwheel is turning the whole building comes to life, creaking and grumbling like a discontented old giant. Bourne Mill is open this year until 1st November, Wednesday through to Sunday, 11am – 5pm. e mill will open again for the 2016 season on 16th March until 30th October 2016 (Wednesday –Sunday plus Bank Holidays). Normal admission is £3.75 for adults or £1.90 for children (under 5s free), free for National Trust members. Groups Welcome. Dogs on leads permitted. . ■

WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

THE JOY OF JERUSALEM

W

ith a vibrant wanderlust since my teens, I have lost count of the cities visited in my decades of travel. However only one city has a unique and magical appeal that never seems to falter: Jerusalem. Wandering around the streets, pottering and exploring, even the air feels sacred and there is a tangible sense of divinity. e views and skyline, the senses and smells; Jerusalem is revered by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Each religion has a site of particular significance; whether visiting the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, following the footsteps of Christ along the Via Dolorosa or Temple Mount. After a strenuous day of walking, praying and simply being in awe of the wonders around every corner, regular respite and relaxation allows for the perfect time to savour the local cuisine. Hot, fried falafel dripping with humus, finely sliced and spiced shawarma embellished with pickles and nestled comfortably between a large doughy pitta. As for cakes or biscuits, whether a Jewish delicacy or Arabic pastry, these are everywhere! With so many places to visit and never enough time to enjoy them all, in addition to your preferential, religious sites, it is worth dropping by Mahane Yehuda Market which is often referred to as ‘e Shuk’. Over 250 vendors selling a full range of spices, fresh produce, Judaica, household items and textiles. Reminiscent of the Spice Market in Istanbul however this market has large suspended fans which keep most of the areas relatively cool. Shopping in the Old City is a must and don’t forget to 1 4 OCTOBER 2015

barter the prices. For luxury products and designer jewellery, Mamilla Mall... When visiting Jerusalem, carefully consider your choice of hotel, preferably near all the major sites and with easy access to transport links. As Israel enjoys a hot climate, it is worth getting up early, enjoying a delicious Israeli breakfast before embarking upon hours of walking and exploration. If travelling during the summer, you will probably need a midday or early afternoon rest before venturing out again for a late afternoon and evening experience. For this trip, I selected the Leonardo Jerusalem (part of the Fattal chain) as my hotel and strategic base. Placed on the historic borderline between the East and West, it brought together a mixture of cultures, I noticed many international tourists and especially religious groups on organised tours. BRAESIDE SCHOOL

BECOMES THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE OAK-TREE GROUP

O

n Tuesday 1 September Mr Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of the Oak-Tree Group of Schools, was delighted to announce that following several months of talks, Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill had completed the transition to become part of the Oak-Tree Group. “With its long-standing local history, excellent academic education and high level of resourcing, Braeside fits naturally alongside Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands. Braeside is an excellent school with an outstanding reputation within our locality for strong academic achievement, and moving the school into the Oak-Tree Group will unlock the potential for considerable growth and development within our two senior schools and beyond. Already we are looking at how to provide new kitchens to deliver freshly home-cooked lunches for all pupils and the introduction of full wrap-around care from 7.30am until 6pm with a raft of exciting extra-curricular clubs and activities for all age ranges.” e Oak-Tree Group of Schools work well together and are used to creating opportunities for pupils, staff and parents to join their counterparts in the other schools for a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities to enhance further their experiences.

1 6 OCTOBER 2015

Buckhurst Hill’s Braeside consists of the Junior site for Kindergarten to Year 5 on Palmerston Road and the Senior site for Years 6 to 11 on the High Road only half a mile away. Matthew Hagger and Headmistresses Gill Haddon have been delighted at how positively both current and prospective families have received the news. Mr Hagger commented; “Following the acquisition of Braeside School, we now have some 950 pupils and 300 staff in our four schools and I will be getting to know the parents, pupils and staff of Braeside much better over the coming weeks and months. Our schools are fortunate to have excellent reputations in our local area and this exciting news has generated a huge amount of interest from prospective parents looking for places. My philosophy has always been to build excellent relationships with parents for the good of their children’s education and I will continue to be readily available to meet with any parents within the Oak-Tree Group who would like to see me.” ■

FINE FARM FOOD

Accolades for Cambridgeshire and Essex as British Farmers mark 10th Fine Farm Produce Awards at Selfridges

It really is the best way to mark the dedication and work our tenants put in to their businesses.”

S

ixty-two products were bestowed with one of the food and farming industry’s highest honours, a National Trust Fine Farm Produce Award, at a ceremony in London last night. It was the first time – and fitting for the 10th anniversary – that so many products met or exceeded the strict judging criteria of the conservation charity’s food and farming awards. Wimpole Estate in Cambridgeshire won two awards, while Hatfield Forest also had a win. ree producers excelled to be crowned overall food and overall drinks winner and a special award, for producer of the decade, was announced. e annual awards [1] this year held at Vintage Salt on Selfridges rooftop as part of its yearly ‘Meet the Makers’ campaign, celebrate the very best produce from the National Trust’s 1,500 tenant farmers and estates across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Products not only have to excel in the obligatory taste test, but entrants also have to pass a checklist of environmental standards to guarantee the quality and origin of ingredients alongside high standards of production. e winners were decided by a judging panel consisting of 10 food and drink experts, including representatives from Selfridges’ food team. is year 37 producers in total were recognised for 62 outstanding food, drink and countryside products ranging from sausages to dressed brown crab and apple juice to beetroot. Overall food winners Martyn and Lorraine Glover from Devon won for their organic natural yoghurt. e couple have farmed at the 200 acre Ashclyst since 1 8 OCTOBER 2015

1998 and decided to build a milk processing unit three years ago to add value to the milk produced from their 80 strong herd of Meuse Rhine Issel cows. “It’s a great testament to our team; we all work together to produce our organic dairy products to a high standard of taste and appearance.” Charles Palmer from Charles Palmer Vineyards was significantly awarded the overall drinks winner on his first time of entering the awards. He has been a Trust tenant since 1998 and turned some of the land into a vineyard back in 2006 and he now has 15 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. All this care and dedication comes together in the bottle, where Charles leaves his wines to slowly ferment for up to three and a half years before being cellared for a further six months. It’s a truly artisanal approach to wine making that’s earning Charles a reputation as one of England’s most exciting sparkling winemakers. Rob Macklin, Head of Food and Farming at the National Trust, and chair of the judges said: “is is a landmark year for the awards and we are thrilled to be able to award more tenants and food producers than ever before. “It really is the best way to mark the dedication and work our tenants put in to their businesses.” ■

MR TAYLOR’S VALENTINES This October Valentines Mansion will be showing a display of sailors’ valentines made by local artist and art teacher Terry Taylor (1932-2012).

S

ailors’ valentines – geometric or pictorial arrangements of sea shells, often in octagonal frames - were at their most popular during the middle period of the nineteenth century. It is often assumed that they were made by sailors during long voyages, using shells collected during their voyages, to be given to their sweethearts on their return from the sea, the reality is that mostly they were made and sold to sailors to take home. Many have been traced to a shop called e New Curiosity Shop, in Bridgetown, Barbados, where they were made up using shells imported from Indonesia. is would make these items truly international, with their own stories to tell, of research, design, travel, creation, marketing, desire and delight. ey were often glazed, and hinged in two parts, like a book. Terry Taylor lived in South Woodford and taught art at Beal Grammar School for Girls/Seven Kings High School (1966 to 1979) and Woodford County High School for Girls (1979 to 1992). He was a much-loved local character with a passion for the decorative arts. e family home in Derby Road, South Woodford was filled with a collection of antique furniture and artwork, and Terry was at the forefront of the 60s interest in Victorian design and 2 0 OCTOBER 2015

decorative arts. His passion for interior design and Victoriana led him to an interest in antique shellwork, both as portable artworks and as architectural design, such as the grottoes at Valentines and at Wanstead House, and the cosmic shell grotto at Margate. is show thus links the interior of the house with the park, and the present with the past. Terry collected sailors’ valentines long before they became fashionable, and took his delight in them forwards, creating his own versions with care and ingenuity. e number of pieces on show indicate that he tried out different patterns, referred to originals, and took the format beyond the decorative into the field of exploratory design. ey are deceptively simple, until we look at them closely in terms of balance and harmony, and the theatre of objects. ■

his 10-day celebration of jazz is a hotly anticipated event delivering a mix of world-class artists and emerging stars and taking the music to a massive and ever-growing audience. Produced by Serious, this Festival has a reputation for bringing the best and freshest music to the capital, with a wide-ranging programme of concerts, commissions, club events and an expansive learning and participation programme. Already, a strand is emerging throughout the Festival that reflects the wealth and sheer variety of vocal talent in today’s jazz universe - both established stars and exceptional new talent. Hiromo appear at the Royal Festival Hall, Wednesday 18 November - The Trio project with Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips. Passionate and incendiary, concerts from the prodigiously-talented Japanese pianist take the notion of an acoustic trio into entirely new territory - a roller-coaster ride of musical pyrotechnics that veers between breath-taking displays of flat-out swing to the power of hi-energy rock, fired by the massively experienced rhythm team of bassist Jackson (Steely Dan, Chick Corea) and drummer Phillips (The Who, Jack Bruce). ‘Energetic, frenetic and spell-binding’ (London Jazz) In association with Apollo Resorts Miroslav Vitous - founding member and bassist for Weather Report - makes his long-awaited return to London with the award-winning pianist and composer Emil Viklický, at the Barbican/Milton Court, Thursday 19 November.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 Highlights A world of catwalks, celebrities, and fashion glitz

ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry. It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends. The world watches as fashion history is made. While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections, and it was one of the event’s biggest line-ups yet. So what does SS16 have in store for us, according to Britain’s most trend-setting brands? BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry’s Womenswear Spring/Summer 2016 show took place in its custom-built show venue in London’s Kensington Gardens. The Function Regalia Collection - Classic coats and functional pieces were

mixed with elements of regalia including metallic cording, crested buttons and handembroidered military motifs. English lace and floor length satin dresses were paired with leather biker jackets, and regimental tailoring with tie-dye tulle. The latest collection introduced the Burberry Rucksack in gabardine-constructed nylon and the Belt Bag in black English suede. In the latest chapter of the brand’s digital innovation story, Burberry followers were able to see a preview of the collection through the first ever Snapchat Show – looks from the collection were shared live as finishing touches were being made in Burberry’s headquarters in London – an industry, platform and brand first. Burberry’s show coverage on Snapchat also included a never-seen-before glimpse into the brand’s design studios, and featured a special appearance by Anna Wintour, receiving her invitation to the show, as well as live reactions on the red carpet from guests as they arrived. Burberry also revealed its make-up look the day before its runway debut, as part of the brand’s Snapchat activity. OCTOBER 2015 3 1

FASHION SOPHIA WEBSTER

JULIEN MACDONALD

JULIEN MACDONALD For Spring Summer 2016, Julien Macdonald took us on a journey of recent travels through Bali. Inspired by the breathtaking natural beauty and artistic flare the show stopping collection of evening wear, red carpet gowns and body suits represents a stunning modern interpretation of the rich vibrant Balinese culture. Layers of metallic thread work overlaid with intricate beading, complimented in aqua, silver and navy blue create an exquisite subdued tropical aura. Motifs taken from jungle culture and modern artwork saw Macdonald’s access into print. Pattern using powerful injections of colour are projected upon the informing female silhouette creating the perfect pop art party dress. This direction saw the traditional Balinese culture turned upside down and into the rock and roll Macdonald chick as bustier cocktail dresses return. The season also sees the return of Macdonald’s signature shapes of varying lengths. Heavily embellished body suits, cut away cocktail dresses and floor sweeping gowns The finale look saw Macdonald return to bridal in the form of a jumpsuit created out of French lace, fine nude tulle and tones of beading. Not one to stick to tradition the finale emphasis modernity as the fundamental word of his collection. ISSA LONDON Issa presented Spring/ Summer 2016, by taking inspiration from repeating motifs in nature. The season’s graphic patterns are interpreted through fabrication and construction; the interlocking structure of broderie anglaise mimics the formation of organic cells, whilst lace jersey and knits feature graphic

and concentric textures. Embroidery gives the prints further depth, with white broderie anglaise coat, trousers and shorts over embroidered with metal hardware, beading and clear piping. Elsewhere the embroidery becomes integral to the garment’s construction; with an Aline V neck dress assembled from layered glossy enamel interlocking segments and a laser cut printed tile dress pieced together with geometric hardware. The brand’s signature draping is apparent on silk and devore jersey dresses, and fluid textured crepe knits, as well as shawl effect sleeves that drape across arms and backs. Sheer and lace panels create a focus on the body beneath the clothes; on a geometric metallic fil coupe jacquard knit dress and sheer panel tailoring. Wrapover shirts, dresses and jumpsuits with obi style beltingoffer a relaxed, feminine silhouette. HUNTER ORIGINAL Hunter Original celebrated its iconic connection with music festivals, with a spring/summer 2016 collection that took its inspiration from the muddy fields. The ripstop tent interior of the setting, complete with guy ropes, referenced the unmistakable landscape of the festival fields, and the looks themselves, drew on the spirit of the most epic festival experience. Hunter presented the ultimate festival journey, featuring the tools to survive whatever the climate throws at you. From the early highs of an unsoaked main stage, to the after-hours downpour where adventure begins. Lightweight nylon fabrics and Hunter sneakers were introduced, alongside waterproof rubber and vinyl jackets. Guy-rope fastenings on waxed cotton outerwear referenced the show set, while colourful tent fabric wrapped classic festival footwear. Technical performance soles were fixed onto soft suede uppers and bags were crafted with welded seams to offer the definitive weather-resistant accessory. Colours evoked hazy summer sunsets

SOPHIA WEBSTER

– sun-bleached dégradés in sorbet and lilac, alongside dusty neutrals. Closing the show, the Original Clog, a new Hunter icon was launched. SOPHIA WEBSTER For Spring/Summer ‘16, Sophia Webster’s imagination goes underwater at the world’s most style conscious Mermaid Launderette. “CrazySexyNautiCool” immerses us in a world of oceanic prints, beach sunsets and dreamy iridescence. Following the journey from land to water, Sophia Webster’s sirens are influenced by hanging out poolside with David Hockney and watching the sunset. A Yoko Honda inspired colour palette gives a nod to bicoastal beach meccas Miami and Malibu in their heyday. Elements including nautical rope, Hokusai-esque wave artwork and beach ball beads adorn signature heel shapes and flat sandals. Once underwater, signature silhouettes are decorated in vibrant energetic prints on loan from tropical fish. Rich ocean life is referenced in an abundance of neon-hued coral made from laser cut leather, while chunky platform heels stand out with intricate stone beading to give the effect of the ocean bed. Iridescent lamé and soft pastel-coloured gems hint at dreamy mermaid influences including Daryl Hannah in the 80’s classic, Splash, while tie-dye thigh-high netted boots with intricate beading evoke Californian beach-babe styling. TOP SHOP UNIQUE Bringing together the saucy and the sweet - baby blue feminine frocks slashed almost to the hip, long jackets over short skirts - every ensemble on the Topshop catwalk had an element of what the French call ‘deshabille’. This undressed quality extended to coats belted, but falling off the shoulders, pyjama-esque two-piece sets, and tux jackets

and shirts so big they look borrowed from a City boy the morning after the night before. It was toned down with the addition of librarian tank knits and cardigans, and a smattering of bold spots. HOUSE OF HOLLAND “FEAR AND LOAFING” An army of Gonzo girls transfixed by the louche world of Vegas in the early 70s seen through the eyes and altered mind of Hunter S. Thompson. Paying homage to theallucinatory grotesques interiors of the 1998 cult film. Psychedelic, trippy and eccentric. Melting two-tone jacquard, patchwork leather, suede and hair-calf outerwear, tropical safari print separates in textured bark cloth and embellished “fly net” mesh lace. And a technology first: House of Holland has partnered with Visa Europe Collab to integrate payments into the catwalk showcase and offer a glimpse into what the future of fashion retail may hold. We can now look forward to the designer trends hitting the high streets for Spring/Summer 2016, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk. London Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors. London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. www.londonfashionweek.co.uk

or many people, Flu and Pneumonia can cause severe complications and deterioration in many pre-existing conditions. Although the NHS GPs work diligently to vaccinate the ‘at risk’ patients, there are many who still slip the net or do not realise the benefits of having the vaccination. Even in healthy individuals, there is a benefit from gaining immunity from a disease which can cause inconvenience, time off work and spread to the more vulnerable members of the family. e flu vaccine can be given to any person over the age of 6 months and is available between October and January every year. Children and teenagers are vaccinated with a nasal spray and those over 18 years are given an injection. e Pneumococcal vaccine is advised to be given to all patients above 65 years of age and those above 18 years of age with certain pre-existing medical conditions. We have had many patients enquiring about the Shingles vaccine as they know people who have suffered greatly from this painful, blistering skin condition which often leads to chronic and recurrent pain. e Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisations advises that the Zostavax vaccine is cost-effective for reducing shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia in the 70–79 years age group. Although it is frustrating for NHS GPs to turn away people they know could really benefit from the vaccine, the financial

constraints of the NHS mean that your GP can only offer you the vaccination if you are 70, 78 or 79 years of age. In fact, the manufacturers advise the vaccine is available to any patient above the age of 50 years; therefore the NHS restrictions prevent the vast majority of eligible patients from benefitting from the advantages the vaccine has to offer. ■

SHAPEWEAR IS SO LAST SEASON! W [ithout succumbing to anything remotely invasive we might add. We call it LPG for your LBD and the results are everything you’ve been looking for. LPG Endermologie is a lipo-massage treatment that is able to eliminate stubborn fat that is resistant to physical exercise and dieting. We all have them, those annoying bits that never seem to shift no matter how many Kale smoothies you subject your poor taste-buds to. But the LPG (patented) motorised rollers have burst onto the scene with a mission to fix those problems once and for all. ey work by administering a ‘roll-up, roll-in, and roll-out’ action that intensively conditions skin tissue to eliminate fat deposits, revitalise blood and lymphatic circulation, and reactivate lipolysis. Added to this, lipo-massage is also able to stimulate collagen and elastin production and hence firm slackening skin.

HEARD IT ALL BEFORE? Yes, so have we. However at Arissa we take our products and treatments very seriously and LPG appeals to us because of its credentials. With over 26 years of research behind them and more than 128 scientific studies, they have really done their homework.

Ladies, we’re approaching the season of the little black dress but be prepared this year. Forget shoe-horning your curves into something resembling an instrument of torture and get a gorgeous, streamlined silhouette…

ey (and we) also understand that cellulite and those stubborn fatty areas are not necessarily down to poor diet and lifestyle. Even the healthiest can suffer with these things along with other issues such as thin, sagging skin. Genetics, hormone imbalances, and age all play their part but finally there is a way to address them without the need for surgery. You may already be aware that at Arissa we consider the whole person and as such will take you through a thorough consultation to work out the ideal treatment programme. We don’t think Audrey Hepburn would have opted for Spanx, so wear your LBD with the same air of confidence and Hollywood glamour; join us at our open day on 14th October to see LPG in action. Next month: Classic French beauty – we reintroduce the ultimate facial

POST HOLIDAY REPAIR TREATMENTS AND ADVICE WITH FRANCES FURLONG

A

t this time of year I find a lot of patients coming to clinic wanting treatments to help reverse and heal the damage caused by sun exposure. e healthy tan has now faded and the unwanted effects on the skin are now clearly visible. It's the prime time now to start face peels, laser and Intense pulsed light courses as well as hydrating fillers and Mesotherapy treatments to repair, revive and bring an autumn glow to our face and body. You are noticing the crows feet have deepened through squinting in the sun and the fine lines are now showing. PROPORTION AND Here at Perfect Skin we HARMONY IN THE FACE like to offer Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but according to the 'TWEAKMENTS 'instead University of Nebraska, a smaller nose and chin, along with a of full face makeover larger distance between the eyes and a smaller mouth width are Treatments, small changes deemed desirable traits for women. Females were proven to be can give you a natural and seen as the fairer sex, rated more attractive by both men and women. Da Vinci himself recognised and understood the subtle enhancement, importance of measurements when he drew the famous softening crows feet, Virtruvian man.The universally recognised number is 1.62 in hydrating the skin and natures symmetry. lifting the corners of the So With the maths behind it, the symmetry of your face can be mouth are small changes measured. The closer this number is to 1.62, the more beautiful it is judged to be subconsciously. with maximum impact.

1-The simplest measurement is the length of your face divided by the widest part of your face. The closer it is to 1.62 , the more beautiful the face is! However this is not the only consideration. 2- Measure the face from the forehead hairline to a spot between the eyes, then the spot between the eyes to the bottom of the nose, the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin, if al three parts are equal - again you will be deemed more beautiful. 3- Lastly, the length of an ear is equal to the length the nose, and the width of an eye is equal to the distance between the eyes.

Non surgical treatments can help with these ratios and proportions to make a face look more attractive, building up a chin and relaxing it so it doesn't curl up, building up the mouth area to give it symmetry, lifting a nose that tips down, making eyes more open and wider are all clever tricks that can help you restore facial attractiveness. I like to offer treatments that make you feel more confident, improve your self esteem and make you more attractive, after all happy people that smile are contagious to us all 4 2 OCTOBER 2015

PIGMENTATION PEELING ere are lots of different peeling agents, we tailor the right solution for you, taking into consideration your aims, lifestyle, age and skin type. Generally six sessions are needed and home creams may be recommended. Don't forget to treat your décolletage area as the chest shows the signs of a lot of skin damage as does

the backs of the hands, say goodbye to unsightly age spots. INTENSE PULSED LIGHT ese treatments are ideal for reducing redness and brown spots caused by over exposure to the sun, it can also be used in conjunction with diathermie to help coagulate and remove unsightly thread veins affecting the nose and cheek area, recently I have seen an increase in patients asking for treatment to the chest area where broken capillaries and red blemishes known as Campbell de Morgan spots which can spoil a skin tone but can easily be removed. DÉCOLLETAGE AND HAND RENEWAL Both of these areas age quickly when not looked after and can often give a persons age away despite them treating their face and neck areas, apply your serums and creams to these areas on a daily basis, as most of us show these areas daily and expose to UV! Using treatments that help eliminate crepiness can result in a firmer and more youthful skin tissue. Dermal fillers like. Restylane and Radiesse can really help. Post summer adjustments to facial crepiness often seen on the cheek, around the eye and the lower lateral part of the face can make people feel a lot older, here are two possible solutions:Restylane Vital is a great way of helping these lines and is ideally better in patients 30s - 50s, it works by hydrating, lifting and rejuvenating. Radiesse is a perfect 3:1 dermal filler which lifts, contours and rejuvenates the face, older clients really benefit as it helps with more advanced ageing of the skin, however I use it in younger patients as a more natural way of achieving a more defined cheek area without looking too overfilled. ■

What’s so great about Ellansé is how long it lasts – up to 2 years! is injectable treatment instigates healthy collagen production deep into the dermis, so it actually improves skin health on a cellular level. You can opt for either 1 or 2 years and after that time you can simply book another appointment to replenish the results. Alternatively we offer read Lift, which is able to firm and lift lax skin around the mid-section and jawline of the face in just thirty minutes with innovative bioabsorbable threads. For more information visit: https://www.courthouseclinics.com/ thread-lift-silhouette-soft 2 WEEKS BEFORE Chemical Peels Chemical Peels are ideal to have two or so weeks before a party. is incredibly effective treatment benefits a wide range of skin complaints from ageing to dryness. Our skin has multiple layers with the outer layer comprised entirely of dead cells. It takes around a month for this layer to naturally shed and reveal the newer, healthier cells underneath. Chemical Peels quicken this process by removing the layer all in one go, improving texture, tone and pigmentation. Your complexion will

4 4 OCTOBER 2015

also appear brighter and respond better to skincare products. 1 WEEK BEFORE Hydro Plus Many of us book facials before a special occasion but, although we may feel great afterwards, they do not always benefit the skin. Why not choose Hydro Plus instead, a revolutionary treatment that is not only relaxing and refreshing but also works to improve the condition of the skin. e procedure begins with the Medical Aesthetician buffing away dead, dry or damaged skin with a Microdermabrasion wand. Once this is complete our bespoke serums are applied directly onto the skin to nourish individual skin types and conditions. Skin is left feeling firmer, smoother and clear of clogged pores. ■

I inherited my weak top lip from my mum, when I looked at my face in my early twenties it really started to bug me! I have quite large facial features and always thought my lips should have been slightly bigger so my face looked balanced. I certainly did not want over filled extremely fake looking lips, just better suited for my face shape. My friend has been a client of Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin for 5 years now and she came highly recommended. At the consultation I was able to take time to explain how I wanted my lips, my concerns of still wanting my lips to feel and look natural. Frances explained that in order to achieve the look I desired it would not happen on the first treatment, she advised a smaller amount of product over three sessions, this way I was more in control of the volume and plumping effect, also they wouldn't feel hard and lumpy which is a problem when you have loads put in at the first treatment. Over the time of my sessions my lips looked and felt more plump and the pillow look which I desired was achieved. Thank you Perfect Skin I am over the moon… Melissa - Chigwell, Essex

SMILE WITH CONFIDENCE Bluebell Dental Practice & Clinic

Dr. Alistair Imam, BDS FDSRCS(Eng) Qualified as a dentist from Manchester Dental School in 1993 and went on to gain four years’ experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at major hospital units in both Manchester and Glasgow. He obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1998 with specific focus in Oral Surgery and this now remains his great passion. Alistair has been treating patients with dental implants for over 15 years and has successfully placed over 1000 implants. We are delighted that he is part of the team at Bluebell Dental Practice and brings with him the addition of an implant capability to our already extensive range of restorative treatments.

“A

s a dentist for over 20 years it is no exaggeration that I have seen people’s confidence shattered by a missing tooth or ill-fitting dentures. But as a dentist with a special interest in implantology, I have also seen patients’ quality of life restored thanks to dental implants. Dental implants are an amazing treatment. Pioneered over 30 years ago, this technique now has decades of case history and demonstrates a 97% success rate. Globally, millions of people have benefited from treatment, and as dental awareness increases and public concern about appearance and quality of life grows, so uptake continues to rise. In essence a dental implant is a substitute for a tooth root, which may be missing due to accident, illness, poor oral hygiene or age. Normally made from biocompatible material such as titanium, the implant is inserted into the jawbone, usually under local anaesthetic, and provides a stable foundation onto which a variety of restorations can be placed. When people talk about dental implants there is often a misconception that they are only useful for patients who have lost all their teeth, and although they are a highly suitable treatment for most denture cases, their application is far wider than this and implants are often the treatment of choice in cases of single tooth loss. Behind every missing tooth there is a story, and whatever the circumstances, losing teeth is a traumatic experience. I see many young people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to a sporting incident or through an accident and finding a long-term, reliable solution in this situation is always my prime concern. No one wants to spend the next 60 or 70 years worrying about

4 6 OCTOBER 2015

whether their tooth is stable or not. In these cases a single implant can be used as the foundation for a single crown or a bridge. One of the most satisfying parts of my job is seeing the delight on a young person’s face when they know they can smile, laugh and be confident without the self-consciousness that so often accompanies dental problems, particularly at the front of the mouth. Of course dental implants are ideal for denture patients, and following treatment many of my older patients admit they have a renewed interest in life and relationships. ey are revitalised by their confidence in eating, chewing and talking without the fear that their dentures may leave them in an embarrassing situation. For denture patients, dental implants also have significant functional benefits over traditional dentures. Conventional treatment can lead to a lack of chewing, which means the jaw is under stimulated and over time this inactivity can cause the jaw to sag, giving the appearance of premature aging. In contrast, dental implants transmit chewing forces to the jawbone, helping to preserve the bone and maintaining a sound facial structure. When a patient first comes to see me about dental implants I complete an assessment of their suitability for treatment, including x-rays and 3D images that help me to diagnose their specific problem. Following this initial consultation every patient is provided

p46-Essex-Bluebell.qxp__ 05/10/2015 09:26 Page 2

My greatest joy as a dentist comes from helping patients understand what’s possible and working with them to achieve this. I aim to give my patients excellence, both in appearance and function that results in a naturally confident smile.” with a full written treatment plan and accompanying estimate of costs. e length of treatment always depends on the individual case – sometimes implants can be placed on the same day, meaning the tooth is restored immediately. In other cases the implant needs approximately 6 weeks to bond with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, patients are provided with a temporary restoration so at no time are they without teeth, with their full restoration being fitted at a later date. I firmly believe that dental implants should not be the preserve of the few. I offer this highly successful treatment to every case which I deem to be suitable, enabling each individual patient to make an informed choice about which treatment is best for them. I am delighted to say that many of them go on to enjoy the liberation that comes from a naturally beautiful smile which fills them with confidence.” ■

HEALTH & BEAUTY

STEERING CLEAR OF SPORTS INJURIES

Sport can be a dangerous business - preventing injuries or treating them is not always a straightforward task.

A

lways consult a medical expert, but here are some helpful hints to help you steer clear of some sports injuries.

ACHILLES TENDONITIS... When the Achilles tendon (at the back of the ankle) is overused, inflammation and pain can occur. Left untreated, it can become chronic and can worsen until it becomes near impossible to run. It is common amongst runners. Preventing Achilles tendonitis: Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles can help prevent injury. A tight and inflexible calf muscle puts undue strain on the Achilles. Ensure you have the correct shoes for your form of exercise. GROIN STRAIN... Groin strain is a strain or rupture of the adductor muscle, which is situated in the upper thigh. Symptoms include sharp pain, swelling and sometimes even bruising. Groin strain is common in football and racket sports. Prevention of a groin strain: As with most muscle pulls, the best way to prevent injury is stretching before exercise. Proper warm-up, gradually increasing the intensity of the activity may help prevent injury, as will strength work on the inner thigh muscles. SHIN SPLINTS... Shin splints occur when the muscles of the lower leg to the shin bone become inflamed, with a pain when you run, walk or point the toes. This is often experienced by people who aren’t used to exercising. Wearing unsuitable or worn-out shoes may also be a factor. Prevention of shin splints: It is best not to do too much too fast. Get good trainers with good shock absorption and stretch properly before and after exercise. LOWER BACK PAIN... Lower back pain comes in many guises — from slipped disks to back spasms, and sciatica. Sports-related back pain is often caused by improper stretching. It is most common in runners, cyclists, golfers, and tennis players. Prevention of lower back pain: Some lower-back injuries cannot be prevented and are often just bad luck, but you can minimise the risk by warming up properly. HAMSTRING PULL... This is caused by tears to the fibers of the hamstring located at the back of the thigh. A hamstring injury produces a sudden sharp pain or ache. The degrees can be minor to severe, but both will make 5 0 OCTOBER 2015

running or even walking difficult and in some severe cases, near impossible. Common in sports involving explosive bursts of pace such as football, basketball and tennis. Prevention of a hamstring pull: The chances of a hamstring injury occurring can be minimised with a proper warm-up and with a thorough stretching of the hamstring (touching your toes with straight knees). Wearing cycling shorts can help keep the hamstring warm. TENNIS ELBOW... Tendons in the elbow get stretched beyond their capacity by a repetitive action and become inflamed. It is common to tennis players and golfers, with pain in the elbow being felt when gripping or turning items. Prevention of tennis elbow: Commitment to forearm strengthening - wrist curls, reverse wrist curls, and squeezing a rubber ball with a proper warm-up and cool down prior to and after playing should go some way to helping. ANKLE SPRAIN... Ankle sprain occurs due to a false movement when the ligaments that hold the bones become over-stretched, with a throbbing pain in the ankle, and potentially lots of swelling, bruising and tenderness. Prevention of ankle sprain: Wear supportive shoes and strengthen your ankles by doing exercises, as well as taping the ankle or wearing a lace-up brace, but these measures won’t guarantee you won’t be injured if you fall hard. RUNNER’S KNEE ... This occurs when overuse leads to irritation of the tendon below the kneecap or when underneath the kneecap is worn. It does not just affect runners, with cyclists and football players among those who can be affected. Pain is often most severe after hill running and there is often swelling. Prevention of runner’s knee: Remember to stretch well. Strengthening work focusing particularly on the quadriceps will help as will the correct running shoes, which should be replaced regularly. THE FINAL WORD... The majority of sports injuries are preventable and often due to a lack of a proper warm-up or stretching regime. Inflexibility of muscles can contribute significantly to injury Despite all these precautions, it’s a fact of life that people do get injured - you only have to look at the amount of professionals that get injured, and that’s rarely anything to do with proper preparation on their part. But by having a regular routine of warm-up, strengthening and stretching can go some way to keeping you fit rather than injured.

HOUSE & GARDEN

A MODERN

Classic Kitchen H

aving found a spacious home with a large garden in South West London, Carla and Ben knew that with some careful consideration they would end up with the perfect family home. With 3 children, 2 bulldogs and 2 cats the kitchen needed to function well with busy family life. However, Carla and Ben also enjoy entertaining so it was important that it maintained a chic and stylish edge. Carla and Ben chose the Belgravia collection by Davonport for their new kitchen. ey wanted to work with Davonport because of the bespoke nature of all Davonport furniture – “because everything is custom-made, we knew we could have the room exactly as we wanted it” explains Carla. e kitchen is located between a formal dining room and a relaxed living space all set within an open plan design. It was important that the kitchen was appropriate for family use. e informal seating area at one end of the 4metre long island provides the perfect space for Carla and Ben’s children to gather whilst they cook, creating a family friendly space that is ideal for day to day life. e long island, which is the central feature of the room, was hand painted after installation in ‘Down Pipe’ whilst the rest of the hand painted cabinetry uses ‘Lamp Room Grey’, both by Farrow & Ball. e soft palette of 5 2 OCTOBER 2015

greys is lifted by the red accents such as the Merlot glass splashback. Walnut features are included to add richness to the room - “we love the warmth of the walnut with the cool grey painted finish”. is modern combination of colours and textures gives the room the sophisticated edge that is perfect for Carla and Ben’s entertaining. e rich walnut used on the breakfast bar and table is also used on some of the cupboards, offering a stunning contrast to the hand painted grey cabinets. e appliances chosen for the room were carefully considered in order to function as a kitchen for entertaining as well as family cooking. Ben is a keen cook with a particular interest in Asian cuisine. A gas wok hob sits alongside an induction hob with 2 ovens and a

p52-Essex-Davonport.qxp__ 05/10/2015 15:55 Page 2

warming drawer (all Miele) also in the kitchen. e hobs and ovens are on the opposite side of the room to the seating area in order to maintain a safe distance between the children sat at the table and the cooking zone. A large stainless steel bespoke extractor, made by Westin, offers adequate extraction for such a busy cooking area. Carla and Ben’s Davonport kitchen is the perfect balance between a relaxed family space and a stylish and sophisticated room. “It switches easily from a crazy room

full of children and dogs in the day to an elegant space to relax with our friends in the evening. Perfect.” Davonport kitchens start from £35,000. ■

HOUSE & GARDEN

SHADES OF GREY Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

F

ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge.

FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your 6 4 OCTOBER 2015

home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.” SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

“We recall we had viewed several properties before finding what was to become our home.”

We knew immediately, the moment we walked in that this was the one for us. It had a really welcoming atmosphere; we were impressed by the size of the accommodation and also captivated by the garden and views over the golf course.

Our favourite space is the open-plan kitchen/diner with the adjoining family area. It’s an area where family and friends come together for cooking, eating and relaxation. Combining these areas has also worked well for entertaining, due to the open-plan flow.

The location has been everything we thought it would be and more. We are only 0.5 miles from Chigwell Station, making central London very accessible; there is also a selection of local shops on Brook Parade that cater for daily needs and we have a choice of restaurants and several schools with high reputations.
