ALFRED MUNNINGS’ ART OF THE AGES NEW LOOK DISPLAYS FOR THE MUNNINGS ARTS MUSEUM, DEDHAM, ESSEX.

H

is lifetime spanned the late Victorian era through to the Atomic Age and in that epic arc of an increasingly modern world Alfred Munnings’ art and lifestyle held firm to a traditional pastoral and rurally-inspired sensibility. Widely known for his paintings of horses and of horse-racing, Munnings’ images of iconic rural scenes have the lyrical power to transport those who visit e Munnings Art Museum back in time to a lost world in which people forded rivers on horseback and made time to delight in a lazy drift along an autumn-time river. e museum, in the artist’s former home, Castle House, launched its 2015 season with an entire redisplay of paintings from its collection of Alfred Munnings’ work. e redisplay charts the timeline of the artist’s life; from his early years at Mendham Mill in Suffolk, through the years when his talent crystallised at Norwich Art School and as a commercial illustrator’s apprentice and then on to the work for which he is globally recognised. Two galleries have been modernised for a focus exhibition, entitled: ‘Munnings and the Horse’. is exhibition features two stunning loans: ‘Fighting Stallions’ by George Stubbs from the British Sporting Art Trust, Newmarket and a study of a horse’s head, completed when the artist was just 15 years old, from Norwich University of the Arts. Jenny Hand, Director of e Munnings Art Museum,

comments that “rough these new displays, we are aiming to deepen an understanding of Munnings, both artist and man, for our visitors. So far the response has been extremely positive” For Marcia Whiting, Honorary Curatorial Associate, the redisplay “presented us with challenges in juxtaposing works which had not previously been hung together and with many new opportunities to show the paintings with a different emphasis”. Some of the paintings on display include: ‘A Suffolk Horse Fair, Lavenham’ (1901), ‘Path to the Orchard’ (1908), ‘Tagg’s Island’ (1919), ‘September Afternoon’ (1939) ‘Does the Subject Matter?’ (1953), and ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ (1957). is relaunch of e Munnings Art Museum is designed, in part, to mark a new phase the development of the museum and an ambition to become a centre for ongoing research and scholarship into Alfred Munnings work and life. ■

BATHWORKS SUPPORTS

Haven House Summer Fayre

W

hen Haven House held its annual summer fayre almost 1,000 local people attended the event which raised £12,000 for the Woodford Green hospice. Local companies that fetched up with fund raising stands to support the annual event included BathWorks, bathroom specialists based in South Woodford. Charity Champion Lloyd Moulder raised £10,000 last year for Haven House by throwing himself out of an plane in a tandem skydive and took on the rigors of team white water rafting to help swell his fund raising target. e BathWorks stand consisted of a free standing bath containing toilet rolls and the public was asked to guess the number in the bath. Prizes included a giant plastic duck, a bottle of fizz and a voucher for £200 to be spent at BathWorks. In all £200 was raised by Lloyd and his team with thanks to volunteers from Lloyds Bank who helped out. e Loughton father of two has inspired his BathWorks Co-Founder to be another Charity Champion. Now Richard Banks, who runs BathWorks in Milton Keynes, is raising £10,000 for his local charity Willen Hospice. e year-long challenge began in June when Richard pedaled from capital to coast and joined 28,000 other cyclists to celebrate the 40th year of the London to Brighton bike ride. Other events planned include footie competitions and another bike ride in October this time from London to Milton Keynes.

1 2 SEPTEMBER 2015

Lloyd said “I enjoyed the fundraising events I did, even the sky dive which had my nerves jangling. I believe it’s important to give something back and I really admire the work these charity put into raising money at the same time as providing a superb service. I am supporting Richard all the way.” Meanwhile, the star attraction at the Haven House fayre was a Blues Brothers tribute band, Jailhouse Blues Brothers. e duo arrived in a customised ‘Bluesmobile’ and performed a storming set of soul classics in the July sunshine. ere were also a barbeque and Pimms station, stalls selling clothing and toys, as well as goods from the hospice’s three local charity shops. For youngsters with energy to burn, there were trampolines, swing boats, a penalty shoot-out and a rodeo bull. Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said; ‘e summer fayre is one of the highlights of our events calendar and this year has been no exception. A big thank you to our fantastic volunteers, who made it all possible, and to everyone who came along on the day.” ■

MARKETING TIP Why Content is so Important Top copywriters and digital marketers strongly recommend incorporating strategic and effective content marketing into all promotional campaigns.

Words: Michelle Harris WHAT IS CONTENT MARKETING? A strategic, marketing approach which focuses on the creation and distribution of valuable, relevant and consistent content.

THE PURPOSE? To attract and retain customers. Ultimately to drive a profitable and positive customer response. Currently, storytelling is very popular and powerful. e Royal Navy’s advertisement is certainly a memorable journey. e lad who was ‘born in Carlisle’, travels the world as a man and is therefore, ‘Made in the Royal Navy.’ Content should be compelling and informative. In addition, your website will receive more hits if the content is constantly updated and interesting. In order to really boost traffic to your website, it is essential to have marketing material such as brochures and leaflets, to regularly post blogs and a strategy for a social media and newsletter campaign. “Most people buy from those they trust. It’s important to maintain a presence and be perceived as an expert.” It is also essential to keep track of your content marketing campaigns and record the ROI. (Return on

Investment). All marketing material should have a purpose and its results tracked. If it’s good it will be shared, found on the internet and circulated. Monitoring success will help you to plan future campaigns. e internet facilitates multiple opportunities however it is worth considering what is appropriate, rather than wasting precious time on anything and everything. Be selective in order to maximise the value of your time. Effective writing has a genuine flow; you want to inform but at the same time influence. Most people are interested in learning more about what is relevant to them or will improve their business. ese factors have to be carefully considered when planning your content marketing. Finally content has to be well-written. How and what you write is indicative of the calibre of your product or service. ■

BRAESIDE SCHOOL EDUCATION FOR GIRLS

B

raeside School provides a structured and supportive environment where girls can grow academically and emotionally. Our experienced staff, who are specialists in their chosen fields, also have a wealth of experience in working with girls. Academically the school delivers a traditional curriculum. Girls are taught in small groups with the opportunity to question and develop thinking skills on a daily basis. Pupils are supported by excellent teaching to achieve their academic potential. Our early years practitioners have the experience and patience to nurture and guide the early development of essential skills in each of our girls so that they become confident in communicating with their teachers and friends from an early age. ere is a natural progression for all of our girls as they move up through the school, with challenge and opportunity appropriate to their needs both within the classroom and through exciting specialist workshop sessions and visits linked with the curriculum, resulting in them achieving excellent results at 11 and 16. Although many pupils stay at Braeside throughout their junior and senior education, we recognise that parents may wish to transfer their daughters to other independent schools at appropriate times, such as 11+. We are fully confident that the high standards achieved throughout the Junior School prepare them for the selection processes 1 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

which other schools have in place at this time. Pupils are encouraged to be ambitious for themselves, developing high self-esteem from a very young age. At whatever age girls leave Braeside, and particularly when their journey finishes with us at age 16, they are able to move on in an assured manner with the necessary drive and determination to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. e opportunity to pursue further education, the career of their choosing and lead a happy and well balanced life is the expectation for all Braesidians. Braeside works very closely with Parents in order to support them and their daughters during the process of growing up. e well-being of pupils in terms of their emotional and physical development is as important to us as their academic journey, as one element of their lives rarely succeeds if other issues are causing unhappiness. Please contact us to enquire as to the availability of places, arrange a visit or discuss your individual requirements. You can be assured of a warm welcome. ■

POPULAR SUMMER CLUBS at the Oak-Tree Schools

A

fter last year’s success piloting holiday clubs for pupils at the Oak-Tree Schools, this year saw an expansion of the programme with a large choice of clubs available for children from 3 to 11 throughout the summer holiday at Coopersale Hall School in Epping, Normanhurst School in North Chingford and Oaklands School in Loughton. Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger commented, “Our parents were very pleased with last year’s provision, and the feedback we received was that they would welcome more clubs with a wide range of activities. School holidays can be very long, especially for working parents who like to keep their children active and engaged. is prompted the expansion of our programme and the provision of many sporting, fun and academic clubs for our pupils throughout the summer break. We have had 10 Multi-Sports courses, 9 Early Years clubs, drama, general activities and academic challenges all held across the three schools”. Families are often looking to keep their children active during the holidays and this year’s Multi-Sports Courses did just that. e teams of qualified coaches taught skills in a variety of sports such as football, cricket, hockey, rounders and basketball for the Oak-Tree children from 4 to 11 years old. Prizes were awarded at the end of each week to celebrate their achievement. e Drama Workshops run by the Group’s professional actor and qualified tutor encouraged the children to work together in groups to learn different techniques, styles, 1 8 SEPTEMBER 2015

improvisations and mini-plays. Each week ended with a showcase performance to parents to show off what the children had been learning. e Early Years clubs were extremely popular, with each school providing three clubs to meet demand throughout the holiday. Days were planned according to the EYFS Curriculum and activities that children enjoyed included arts and crafts, messy play, outside play, science, cooking and story-telling. Activities Week, and Achievement Week saw qualified teachers from the Group organising fun activities such as baking, creative arts and fashion shows or academic activities to challenge the brain such as fun Maths and English drills. Matthew Hagger said, “We’ve been able to take pupils from 8.30am until 4.15pm each day. We use our own qualified staff to run the clubs and have received excellent feedback from the pupils and parents. Many started out booking one week but then actually ended up doing two or three”. e extra-curricular provision is outstanding at the Oak-Tree Schools and term times are full of activities such as Breakfast and Teatime Clubs running from 7.30am until 6pm as well as an extensive range of sporting, academic, performing arts and other fun clubs that take place after school each day. ■

t began as one man’s story… became everyone’s music…and is now London’s hottest new show. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins in 1983, on the evening of the 25th anniversary celebration of Motown, and Berry Gordy is looking back on his career. Inspired by his childhood hero, black American boxer Joe Louis, the young Berry dreams big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a sociallycharged, racially-divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born! Berry signs a series of ground-breaking artists including Diana Ross and the Supremes, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realises the time has come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of, to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that

changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary—the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl,” “What’s Going On,” “Dancing in the Street,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible history – and an experience you’ll never forget.

MOTOWN THE MUSICAL

ODYSSEY’S LONG AND WINDING ROAD

O

ne of the most controversial dramas on television at the moment is Odyssey on BBC 2 – Sunday at 9 p.m. Originally I thought it had lots of promise; a sultry African setting (supposedly Mali but really filmed in Morocco) a murky merge of US politics, corruption and a lucky female soldier who is saved by a toilet break when her unit are murdered. e three main characters are a US corporate litigator, Peter Decker (Peter Fracinelli), the Special Ops soldier, Odelle Ballard (Anna Friel) and a naïve young man, who constantly misses the obvious, has serious daddy-issues and trusts all the wrong people, Harrison Walters (Jake Robinson). Collectively we assume they will come together, unite and save the day whilst Odelle makes her Homeric journey back home. A formulaic theme of good guys trying to save the world despite their families and friends being at personal risk; justice will be served and the proverbial bad apples will be exposed and punished. So far so relatively good BUT the problem is the characters. I’m sure that the script was tantalising when read off the page but in its current televised format, it just doesn’t work. Anna Friel’s confused expression, blank stare and despite her best intentions to hide from the mercenaries who want to kill her, a gaping wound on her nose which renders her instantly recognisable. How would highly trained mercenaries miss her at almost every opportunity? As the story very slowly unfolds, it goes from poetically plausible to absurd. From aspirational drama to farce and back again in various jalopy trucks, rattling around the sandy highways whilst in the US, whispered intense conversations regarding political corruption and 3 0 SEPTEMBER 2015

terrorist funding are meant to keep us enthralled. e plot drags on and I think the writers merit a literary accolade for managing to facilitate virtually an hour’s worth of dialogue which effectively adds up to approximately five to ten minutes of storyline and action. Its cumbersome development of plot and characters leaves you exasperated and unstimulated. As the episodes roll on, do we still care whether Odelle will return to her daughter and lacklustre husband? So who is the most annoying character? It’s a tough one. I think the gawky geek who apparently has it all worked out, if only somebody (anybody?) would take him seriously. He did catch on to Ruby’s antics far quicker than Harrison but the plot needed some emergency distraction; love scenes generally feel the void and keep viewers watching, so we had a few of them until Ruby’s ice heart melted and she was killed by a hail of police bullets. But for all this cynicism I must confess, I do have the record facility on my Sky+ Series Link! Why? Because the drama’s so painfully awful, you can’t help wondering as we reach the finale… will it get any worse or will there be a revelation that will redeem the series? ■

STEERING CLEAR OF SPORTS INJURIES

Sport can be a dangerous business - preventing injuries or treating them is not always a straightforward task.

A

lways consult a medical expert, but here are some helpful hints to help you steer clear of some sports injuries.

ACHILLES TENDONITIS... When the Achilles tendon (at the back of the ankle) is overused, inflammation and pain can occur. Left untreated, it can become chronic and can worsen until it becomes near impossible to run. It is common amongst runners. Preventing Achilles tendonitis: Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles can help prevent injury. A tight and inflexible calf muscle puts undue strain on the Achilles. Ensure you have the correct shoes for your form of exercise. GROIN STRAIN... Groin strain is a strain or rupture of the adductor muscle, which is situated in the upper thigh. Symptoms include sharp pain, swelling and sometimes even bruising. Groin strain is common in football and racket sports. Prevention of a groin strain: As with most muscle pulls, the best way to prevent injury is stretching before exercise. Proper warm-up, gradually increasing the intensity of the activity may help prevent injury, as will strength work on the inner thigh muscles. SHIN SPLINTS... Shin splints occur when the muscles of the lower leg to the shin bone become inflamed, with a pain when you run, walk or point the toes. This is often experienced by people who aren’t used to exercising. Wearing unsuitable or worn-out shoes may also be a factor. Prevention of shin splints: It is best not to do too much too fast. Get good trainers with good shock absorption and stretch properly before and after exercise. LOWER BACK PAIN... Lower back pain comes in many guises — from slipped disks to back spasms, and sciatica. Sports-related back pain is often caused by improper stretching. It is most common in runners, cyclists, golfers, and tennis players. Prevention of lower back pain: Some lower-back injuries cannot be prevented and are often just bad luck, but you can minimise the risk by warming up properly. HAMSTRING PULL... This is caused by tears to the fibers of the hamstring located at the back of the thigh. A hamstring injury produces a sudden sharp pain or ache. The degrees can be minor to severe, but both will make 4 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

running or even walking difficult and in some severe cases, near impossible. Common in sports involving explosive bursts of pace such as football, basketball and tennis. Prevention of a hamstring pull: The chances of a hamstring injury occurring can be minimised with a proper warm-up and with a thorough stretching of the hamstring (touching your toes with straight knees). Wearing cycling shorts can help keep the hamstring warm. TENNIS ELBOW... Tendons in the elbow get stretched beyond their capacity by a repetitive action and become inflamed. It is common to tennis players and golfers, with pain in the elbow being felt when gripping or turning items. Prevention of tennis elbow: Commitment to forearm strengthening - wrist curls, reverse wrist curls, and squeezing a rubber ball with a proper warm-up and cool down prior to and after playing should go some way to helping. ANKLE SPRAIN... Ankle sprain occurs due to a false movement when the ligaments that hold the bones become over-stretched, with a throbbing pain in the ankle, and potentially lots of swelling, bruising and tenderness. Prevention of ankle sprain: Wear supportive shoes and strengthen your ankles by doing exercises, as well as taping the ankle or wearing a lace-up brace, but these measures won’t guarantee you won’t be injured if you fall hard. RUNNER’S KNEE ... This occurs when overuse leads to irritation of the tendon below the kneecap or when underneath the kneecap is worn. It does not just affect runners, with cyclists and football players among those who can be affected. Pain is often most severe after hill running and there is often swelling. Prevention of runner’s knee: Remember to stretch well. Strengthening work focusing particularly on the quadriceps will help as will the correct running shoes, which should be replaced regularly. THE FINAL WORD... The majority of sports injuries are preventable and often due to a lack of a proper warm-up or stretching regime. Inflexibility of muscles can contribute significantly to injury Despite all these precautions, it’s a fact of life that people do get injured - you only have to look at the amount of professionals that get injured, and that’s rarely anything to do with proper preparation on their part. But by having a regular routine of warm-up, strengthening and stretching can go some way to keeping you fit rather than injured.

I inherited my weak top lip from my mum, when I looked at my face in my early twenties it really started to bug me! I have quite large facial features and always thought my lips should have been slightly bigger so my face looked balanced. I certainly did not want over filled extremely fake looking lips, just better suited for my face shape. My friend has been a client of Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin for 5 years now and she came highly recommended. At the consultation I was able to take time to explain how I wanted my lips, my concerns of still wanting my lips to feel and look natural. Frances explained that in order to achieve the look I desired it would not happen on the first treatment, she advised a smaller amount of product over three sessions, this way I was more in control of the volume and plumping effect, also they wouldn't feel hard and lumpy which is a problem when you have loads put in at the first treatment. Over the time of my sessions my lips looked and felt more plump and the pillow look which I desired was achieved. Thank you Perfect Skin I am over the moon… Melissa - Chigwell, Essex

STRAIGHTEN UP YOUR SOFA TIME

A

t the end of a busy day, or even first thing on a Sunday morning, the sofa can seem an inviting place. While some seats are merely practical, sofas are all about comfort and relaxation, right? Somewhere to slouch in front of your favourite TV show, or curl up with a good book. Don't forget about your posture, though. We all know that sitting up straight is important when we're sitting at a desk - and sofas are no different. So show your spine some settee TLC, with these simple tips… DON'T SLUMP If you sit slouched, or slightly hunched over, you're likely to be piling the pressure on your lower back as it has to cope with the weight of your upper body. You'll need to strengthen your core and buttock muscles. MAKE SUREYOUR LOWER BACK IS SUPPORTED If there's a big gap between your lower back and the chair you're sitting on, you may need to make some adjustments (and this is something you should also keep an eye on if your job is a desk-bound one). Try and make sure your knees are level with your hips by adjusting your seat, or find yourself a foot rest. PLANTYOUR FEET FLAT ON THE FLOOR It's highly tempting to cross your legs nonchalantly, like that posh couple on Gogglebox, when you're watching TV (particularly if you have a glass of G&T in your hand). But this

4 8 SEPTEMBER 2015

can put pressure on your lower back over time. So try and keep your feet on the floor and resist the urge to cross them or tuck them under you. AVOID 'TEXT NECK' Many of us go from spending our nine to five bent over a computer keyboard to whiling away the evening hunched over a phone or tablet. In fact, smartphone users now spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads lowered. is can lead to that all too common feeling of being stiff and sore around your upper back, shoulder blades and neck. Save yourself a fortune on pricey massages and try lengthening your neck as you tuck in your chin as an exercise. Alternatively, why not go old school and give someone a call instead of texting them? DON'T GET STUCK IN A RUT When there's a particularly gripping TV show on, it can be easy to develop the kind of rigor mortis seen in a Silent Witness corpse. But try and move around a bit to boost blood circulation. Shift position every half hour or so, or get up and walk around - even if it's just over to the kettle and back. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED Working on your posture takes time and effort - it feels a lot comfier lounging under your blanket than sitting up straight. Why not get your partner, kids or friends on board for the posture crusade? When one of you looks at risk of slumping like a soggy-bottomed cake on Bake Off, give each other a gentle nudge. Your backs will thank you for it. ■

NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR?

WHY NOT HAVE THE DOCTOR VISIT YOU AT HOME?

I

n order to protect our health and that of our families, it is essential to have a good relationship with a GP. However as the NHS suffers ongoing cutbacks, there are times when we or a member of our family just can’t wait and need urgent attention and can’t get an appointment. Or the times offered are not convenient and don’t suit our timetables or lifestyle. e old-fashioned traditional style of doctoring is often replaced with what feels like a cumbersome machine that is more about administration, than it is about care. Long waiting times, even longer for a specific GP. ‘Home Visit Doctor’ is a dedicated, private home visiting GP service offering you and your family outstanding care in the comfort of your own home 24 hours a day. SERVICES OFFERED INCLUDE: GP Appointments Health Screenings Travel Vaccinations and Immunisations Specialist Medicals Referrals to Specialists Home Visit Doctor offers access to an outstanding medical team and when it suits you… “We recently had our first son and my wife needed to see a doctor urgently to attend to her stitches which were bleeding. Our local GP practice refused her an emergency appointment and would not let her speak to a doctor. We got in touch with Dr Sattar at Home Visit Doctor and were

Loughton, August 2015 e practice was established by a group of local General Practitioners with many years’ experience within Private and NHS General Practice. ey understand health care in this locality and aim to provide an exceptionally high quality and personalised, private GP service. Every patient is given the time necessary for their medical problem, or simply to discuss concerns. It is the practice’s ethos that every patient should feel the value and benefit from each appointment. New patients are offered a significant discount (as outlined on the website) so they can experience the services offered.

NEW AGE TRAVELLER It doesn’t take a barrage of fillers, needles and chemicals to bring a youthful glow to your skin. Put your trust in Ayurveda from the inside out for an overall feeling of vitality, and a look that will turn back time.

O

ver the last five issues of Chigwell Life we have spoken in depth about Ayurveda, fundamentally about how it works to balance the person as a whole. e consequences are far reaching and include increased energy, better clarity of mind, and of course glowing skin. To this end we have given advice on conditions such as acne and rosacea, but perhaps the most sought-after advice relates to anti-aging. It seems a great many of us are seeking that holy grail of skin solutions: one that will slow down the onset of fine lines and wrinkles, and help to bring back that youthful glow. AYURVEDIC SCIENCE According to Ayurveda, a number of factors determine skin health and youthfulness. is ‘whole person’ approach includes optimum moisture balance (Kapha in balance), effective functioning of the metabolic mechanisms that coordinate all the various chemical and hormonal reactions in the skin (Pitta in balance), and efficient circulation of blood and nutrients to the different layers of the skin (Vata in balance). is anti-aging effect is known as Vayasthapana which translates to ‘maintaining youthfulness’ or ‘arresting age,’ As far as skin care is concerned there is a specific set of pure, natural ingredients that together create this age-arresting effect. is is why at Arissa we have chosen the Ayurda range of products. e ingredients that go into creating these totally natural, yet extremely effective skin-care ranges 5 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

include: Aloe Vera (renowned for assisting skin renewal), Tulsi (a well-known anti-oxidant for fighting free-radical damage), Pomegranate (a skin-care favourite that stimulates collagen and speeds skin cell turnover), and various vitamin A-rich cold-pressed oils. THE ARISSA WAY Of course there are many more vital elements that go towards creating a product that your skin will quite literally drink in. Ayurda is like a topical nutrition boost and you will see the results very quickly. But as well as product advice we will guide you through a personal consultation to take into account every part of your lifestyle to encourage you towards optimum skin health. We will also offer advice on combining Ayurvedic facial treatments with more mainstream therapies such as: • Microdermabrasion – a gentle but deep exfoliating treatment for smoother, more radiant skin • Facial Endermologie – a natural, non-invasive, anti-aging cell stimulation treatment that increases hyaluronic acid by 80% (and much loved by celebrities) • LED light therapy - a painless application of light to various skin levels to stimulate cellular regeneration, facilitate tissue repair, and promote collagen production We all know there is no miracle product or fountain of youth from which we can emerge decades younger, but there are ways in which we can all increase vitality and

COMMON SKIN COMPLAINTS AND HOW TO TREAT WITH FRANCES FURLONG ACNE Acne can affect all ages, not just teenagers, and the true cause is still a matter of debate. It occurs when oil-secreting glands in the skin get clogged and become inflamed or infected. Despite the blockage, the glands, which are controlled by the sex hormones, carry on producing oil, resulting in a swelling and the characteristic spots - mostly on the face, shoulders, back or chest. Treatment: The gold standard treatment for mild-to-moderate acne is combination therapy, which could include topical peeling agents, skin peels and antibiotics. BODY ODOUR AND UNDERARM SWEATING Hyperhydrosis is not a temporary condition. Many people who suffer from it have suffered for many years, often from childhood or sometimes from adolescence. Hot or cold, the sweating is constant, and the impact of hyperhydrosis can be severe. Wetness and staining of clothes causes embarrassment! Treatment: Prescribed aluminium salts applied daily to the area can help, but clients often find this too rigid and sometimes uncomfortable. Muscle relaxing injections is a very effective way of treating the condition and can last up to 6-8 months. CYSTS Very little is known about these sac-like growths that form in the deeper layers of the skin when the lining of a hair follicle gets blocked. They can occur almost anywhere on the body and can become inflamed, red and painful if the contents get into the surrounding skin. Treatment: Although cysts are a nuisance, they are rarely harmful and antibiotics can be used to combat bacterial infections. However an injection of hydrocortisone to the cyst can reduce it quickly, often known as the cort shot - Hollywood stars swear by this treatment before red carpet events. DERMATITIS One in five people will be affected by dermatitis or eczema at some time in their lives. Anxiety and other stresses can trigger an attack, probably by weakening the normal immune system response. Avoidance tactics include showering rather than bathing, keeping the skin moist, wearing soft, smooth, cool clothing and protecting the skin from toxins. Treatment: Steroid creams and ointments can be used to combat itching, but good Dermatologists often avoid steroid treatments as the problem may lie in a general disorder not connected directly to the skin. Looking at stress factors and topical allergy testing can be useful.

5 8 SEPTEMBER 2015

FLUSHING Flushing is the result of blood vessels in the skin dilating. A wide range of causes include some drugs, various foods, hot drinks and alcohol. Hot flushes are a key symptom of the menopause. Treatment: Avoid eating or drinking whatever triggers the flushing. HRT is an effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats associated with the menopause. Intense Pulsed Light treatments and diathermy are a fantastic way to reduce the red vessels and breaking them down. HIRSUTISM Hirsutism is when a woman has excessive hair growth. e hair is usually thick and dark, rather than fine and fair. What causes hirsutism? Hirsutism is caused by an excess of male sex hormones called androgens, or an increased sensitivity to androgens. In most cases, this is caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, in around 10% of cases there are no obvious causes. Treatment: ere is no cure for hirsutism, but there are treatments to manage the condition. Laser hair removal and electrolysis can help manage this, also topical prescribed creams for the face. KELOID SCARS ese usually occur after an injury to the skin or severe acne, but can also be triggered by a scratch or shaving cut. When the skin starts to heal, something goes wrong and too much collagen gets into the scar, causing it to swell. While not dangerous, they can be painful, itchy and disfiguring. Treatment: For severe cases surgery may be the only option, however laser and derma pen therapy can greatly reduce and improve them significantly, in the early stages of formation injectable steroids can help reduce inflammation. STRETCH MARKS e result of skin being stretched during pregnancy, weight gain or growth spurts, stretch marks are the visible red and purple signs that collagen has been damaged. As the skin recovers, it may lose normal pigmentation, resulting in the white scars associated with mature stretch marks. Treatment: Targeted light technology can restore the pigment in white scars and laser can help red scars, derma pen and derma roller also help improve the scars to make them less obvious. ■

hen a total refurbishment of the whole house is the order of the day even the most ardent and accomplished interiors fan sometimes needs that little bit of extra help! at’s when Mr & Mrs M. from Loughton enlisted the help of Schmidt Kitchens in Loughton. e Kitchen was a very important part of the Grand Plan our clients had for their home. A truly super home, fully refurbished, including a fantastic extension designed by architect Nic Antony, using Alan Berry of Douglas Charles Builders and finished off with a superb Schmidt Kitchen installed by Schmidt-Loughton. Having shopped around for the Kitchen solution, so far with little joy they were happy to find exactly what they wanted from our Kitchen Showroom so close to home. As soon as Mrs. M. walked in to our Loughton Showroom the six inspirational Kitchen displays started the creative juices flowing. Taking their first cue from the three metre Island at the front of the Showroom kick started the initial Kitchen Design process. Schmidt came on board early in the Design stage of the total project, and a small contract deposit enabled Michael the Designer to release comprehensive technical plans of the Kitchen to Alan Berry the builder early on in the process putting the whole project on a sound footing and allowing for a trouble free install. While Mrs M. drove the Design along a clearly thought out path, combining her aesthetic vision featuring an Aubergine Aga Range Cooker and eclectic mixed dining chairs with the practical choice of Schmidt extra deep drawers in both the top and bottom cupboards. What about Mr M. what was he going to get from his brand new Kitchen? You need not have worried on that front! Mr M. had also been to the Schmidt showroom in Loughton. HOUSE & GARDEN

TIPS S FOR A GREAT T GARDEN N Nice gardens are very appea aling g. Man ny buyyers cite a thoughtfully designe designed ed and well-kept garden as a major m factor in their decision to buy a propertyy.

W

ith so many television programmes,, magazines and books devoted to gardening and nd outdoor design, house buyers are becomingg more ambitious and more discerning when en it comes to tracking down the garden of their dreams. Here are some hints for creating a perfect garden for your home. Choose a single theme or style. If you have acress of rolling grounds you can separate into diffferent areas, otherwise rwise you will need to pick one style and stick to that throughout. hout. It’s no good trying to create a harmonious and peaceful Zen en garden but then planting a riot of wildflowers in the middlee of it. Trying to mix a formal English-style garden with naturalistic ic parkland won’t work. Nothing spoils a perfect garden like a hodgepodge of styles. Consider your desires and your constraints in order der to fuel your creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention,, so think about what you need from your garden (a space to entertain? A place to grow fruit and vegetables? somewhere fo or children to play?) and come up with a creative solution. It’s possible p to create a formal-style garden but also be fairly self-sufficient. ufficient. If your garden sufffers from poor inner-city soil and d too much shade, be inventive. It’s possible to produce an English-style ish-style layout, but with decorative edibles rather than flowerr beds. Cut

6 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

back overhanging shade trees into neat borders and use raised beds to create an easy-to maintain, high-quality growing-ar -areas. It’s the perfect blend of desire meets constraints.

Plan yyour our spacee, and yyour our time carefullyy. A truly great garden is a well-planned garden... n... Draw out your garden in detail, making note of areass of shade and sun, damp and troublesome zones, areas of high traffic and sight lines. Use this plan to decide how you will use each part of the garden. Then decide what you’re goingg to plant and when. Diffferent plants have different growing seasons and if you plan your calendar well you’ll have a constant symphony ony of flowers, fruit or vegetables as one comes into season n as another dies back. You may have room for a swimming pool, or beautiful ul pond, so approach the experts in this case. Decide on the best garden furniture to suit your individual ividual needs, based on whether you have decking or a shelter ered space to entertain. With a little foresight and planning you can create a stylish and practical garden that will wow potential buyers.

HOUSE & GARDEN

SAY GOODBYE TO SUMMER

with a Smile

T

he last days of summer are, for some, a time to put away the flip flops, put down the holiday novel and pack away the swimming costumes as the cold and wet weather sets in. e shorter days and darker nights, however, are no reason to batten down the hatches. Despite the weather making it just that little bit harder to find the motivation for an evening run or morning workout, there’s no reason that rain should stop play. A home swimming pool from Origin Leisure opens up a world of opportunities during the autumn and winter months to come. While outdoor pools need to be shut down for winter, an Origin Leisure indoor pool can be enjoyed all year round. What’s more, the dark winter nights are the ideal backdrop to showcase beautiful bespoke interior pool house lighting, great for entertaining; while a warm pool building lets you soak up views of the garden all year round, without feeling the frost. In fact, there may be more benefits of a home swimming pool in winter than you realise.

ENJOY THE GARDEN ALLYEAR ROUND e latest research shows that the average British homeowner spends nearly 20 days a year gardening. Sadly, as soon as the sun disappears it leaves us little time to enjoy all our hard work. Origin Leisure can incorporate thermally efficient bi-folding doors in any pool house design, meaning you can enjoy a perfect view of the garden all year round. Kerrie Smith and her family experienced the benefits of bi-fold doors in their pool house, as she explains: “Even when the sun isn’t out you still have the warmth of the building. e 6 8 SEPTEMBER 2015

bi-fold doors are wonderful as it can be chucking down with rain and it doesn’t matter. e children can still get out the house to play somewhere safe and warm. e weather was so bad this winter at one point and I was so grateful to be able to go into the building, sink into the sofa, close my eyes and pretend I was somewhere else. It’s an extension of the home and also somewhere we can escape to. “ WARM AWAY THE WINTER BLUES Getting caught in torrential downpours will leave you freezing and soaked from head to toe, but a built in steam room is the best form of winter warmer that’s sure to get your circulation going. Each Origin Leisure swimming pool can be tailored to include different features. During the autumn months a steam room and sauna are ideal for warming your cockles, while adding a few drops of essential oils will also lift your mood. Lemon oil has uplifting qualities to put a spring in your step, while a few drops of lavender or sandlewood will help you wind down after a busy day. Eucalyptus oil is also great for warding off autumn colds and flu.

p68-Essex-Origin.qxp__ 02/09/2015 14:30 Page 2

STAY MOTIVATED With the changing seasons comes the urge to hang up the gym gear and go into hibernation, but research shows that keeping up the exercise will keep the seasonal blues at bay and leave you feeling on top of the world. Staying motivated is no mean feat in September and October when darker evenings make it less safe to use the great outdoors as a place to work out, and you’re often battling against wind and rain. at’s why many Origin Leisure customers choose to incorporate a home gym into their swimming pool design, with the very latest state of the art gym equipment to help keep motivation levels high. It also means you have somewhere warm and dry to work out all year round, in the privacy of your own home. AUTUMN GATHERINGS AND WINTER PARTIES e flurry of summer soirees needn’t come to an end in autumn, as a pool house is the perfect venue to host gatherings with friends and family when it’s not quite hot enough for a garden party.

Origin Leisure’s indoor pools can be designed to fit your entertaining needs, with a bar and kitchen area, TV screens and additional seating areas -the sky is the limit for turning your pool house into a social space. e experts at Origin Leisure can advise on the best lighting effects to showcase the inside and outside of the building during the darker months, while including skylights will mean you can look up at the stars during your evening swim. ABOUT ORIGIN LEISURE Origin Leisure is an award winning company with over 30 years’ experience creating beautiful bespoke swimming pools, designed to your specification. e company manages the whole swimming pool installation process from concept to completion, which means all elements of the design and build of your pool are taken care of. ■
