FROM THE

editor Welcome to our May issue…

W

hen Valentines Mansion in Ilford was restored in 2009, the top floor, historically the servants’ quarters, was transformed into six contemporary studios for local artists and designer makers. Today, it is a thriving hub of artistic activity with 10 individuals practicing their diverse mediums from the inspirational setting of Valentines, from stunning fused glass, to jewellery and inventive ceramics, to intricate mosaics and striking contemporary paintings. Normally a private workspace for the artists, the Open Studio events provide a great opportunity for the public to step inside the creative spaces, meet the artists and see how their work is made and maybe even pick up a few unique handmade items long the way. roughout the day, the crowds are treated to special demonstrations by the artists – tips on how to paint, displays in carving in to ceramics, or maybe even how to print on to ceramics – we take a closer look at the artists. Paycocke’s House & Garden, built in 1509 under the direction of omas Paycocke a wealthy wool merchant, is a beautiful carved half-timbered Tudor house with an Arts and Crafts style garden reflecting the influence of its later owners, the Buxtons. Nikolaus Pevsener, the art historian best known for his guides of English counties, famously described Paycocke’s as “One of the most attractive half-timbered houses of England.” Local entrepreneur Mike Seabrook purchased a very dilapidated South Weald Golf Club (formally Weald Park) in November 2013, the course had been 'let go' by the previous owners Since that time Mike has set about restoring the course to its former glory, in fact it is a better Golf Course now

than it has ever been. Over £500,000 has been invested into the course with all brand new John Deere greens equipment supplied by P.Tuckwell Ltd. One of the first, and biggest projects on the course was to completely refurbish ALL the bunkers (58 of them) each bunker was stripped down to clay, new drainage added and finally refilled with tour quality sand. New bunkers have been added a few taken away. New water hazzards and features have been added along with 6 new white tees, extending the length of the course to over 6,500 yards – we take a closer look at a fantastic local golf club. Pimms, paddles & posh nosh will be in abundance this year at Henley Royal Regatta when party people and racing enthusiasts alike, take to the banks of the River ames for one of England’s most prestigious summer sporting and social events, from Wednesday 1st to Sunday 5th July. For those that want to retreat from the crowded affairs of the tow paths, avoid queuing for bottles of champagne and enjoy the shaded retreat of some of the finest hospitality along the course, Temple Island Enclosure during Henley Royal Regatta still remains one of the most favoured places to entertain on the Regatta course, close to the start of the racing – we bring you one of the Great British Summer highlights. Enjoy your issue and we look forward to seeing you again in June.

Starting a new BuSineSS? Or MOving tO the next LeveL?

w

hen it’s time to make important business decisions, most people feel a mixture of excitement and nervousness. e two most crucial questions are: • How much needs to be invested? • How to balance expectations with existing commitments. A few simple questions will get everything into perspective and help with the decision making process. • Why do you want to set up a business or move to the next level? • What are your goals for: • 6 months • 12 months • 3 years • 5 years. • Analyse your competitors. What’s your USP? Your mission statement? • Are you better and different to your competitors? Why should your target audience choose you? • Who are your target audience? • What do you ultimately want to achieve? Answering these questions is not a five minute exercise but the time invested can probably ascertain whether your business fails or succeeds. Next step aNd with coNsideratioN for all the questioNs so far: • Looking to the near and long-term future, how would you like to present your image and branding to the world? • What logo will carry you through to the fruition of all your goals? What’s your memory hook – how do you want people to remember you, like you, trust you and more importantly, do business with you? How will you use emotive language to sell your business and appeal to your target audience? • Consider what you need to get started:

1 0 M ay 20 1 5

• Business cards and logo • Website • How you will drive traffic to your website • Where will you network? • How will you maximise the benefits of social media? • Who can help you and why? • Building up your database • How will you maintain regular contact with potential customers? • How will you develop long-term business relationships? So when considering your budgets, please do not invest everything into your website. ere are other important factors which are essential for the overall plan. Whether at a preliminary level or going to the next important stage, it is essential to have a structure. Finally and most importantly, look for support and help from family, friends and business colleagues. Engage with positive people who share your enthusiasm and want you to succeed. Being your own boss merits far more than just being good at the services you offer or the products you sell. It’s about developing a whole remit of expertise which includes accounting, negotiation, presentation and ongoing administration. ■ Being a business owner is both daunting and exciting. But when it’s successful – it’s certainly worth it.

Lisa Atkin took up pottery after a pro-longed illness and is now an experienced stained glass, potter and 3D designer. Anne Eggebert makes site-specific works using video, teletechnologies, photography, drawing and installation to explore the cultural articulation of landscape and how we describe it in the 21st century. Louise Moore is a talented ceramic artist, mainly working with historic sites. Her photographs are cleverly transferred on to a clay surface using a special photographic screen printing process. Sarah Partridge specialises in ceramics, sculpture and mosaics and takes inspiration from forms found in nature, featuring spirals and orbs with smooth and textured surfaces.

N

ormanhurst School welcomed a team of 5 inspectors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate at the end of the Spring Term. With only five days’ notice, a thorough examination of policies, procedures, lessons, pupil achievement and management took place without the school being able to benefit from any special advance preparation. e final report has just been published and Headmistress Claire Osborn is extremely pleased with the outcome; “We were judged to be ‘Excellent’ and ‘Outstanding’ in nine out of the eleven categories and I am delighted that there are so many comments within the report that support and acknowledge the many positive achievements Normanhurst has made in recent years. With such rigorous criteria for inspections nowadays this report is of a far higher standard than the national trend”. Some of the key findings are as follows: • e school is extremely successful in fulfilling its aim to build a happy, family environment that cultivates courtesy, respect and responsibility. • e school provides an excellent curriculum which is adapted extremely well to the needs and aptitudes of the pupils. • ere are excellent standards of behaviour at all levels within the school.

• Excellent relationships between staff and pupils contribute significantly to the quality of the teaching. Teachers know their pupils extremely well. • e school has a highly favourable ratio of staff to pupils, with access to a good range of educational resources. • e overall quality and standards of the Early Years provision are outstanding. Matthew Hagger, Managing Principal of the Oak-Tree Group of Schools, comments; “Our thanks go in particular to our hard working and excellent staff, who clearly impressed these experienced inspectors. We are also grateful to all the parents who responded so positively to the inspection questionnaires, and to the pupils themselves who demonstrated just how proud they are of their school. Increasingly, when parents are choosing schools for their children they rely on independent reports such as this and they value their conclusions. At Normanhurst we continue to strive for the best education possible for our pupils, and we are confident that we will be able to build on this outstanding report and take the school to an even higher phase in its continuing development.” Based in Station Road, North Chingford, Normanhurst is the local independent school of choice for many Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Epping Forest families. Catering for over 260 children from 2½ to 16, it is a school with a strong sense of community and is supported well by its parents and a team of experienced and dedicated staff. Discovering Paycocke’s

House & Garden

P

aycocke’s House & Garden, built in 1509 under the direction of omas Paycocke a wealthy wool merchant, is a beautiful carved half-timbered Tudor house with an Arts and Crafts style garden reflecting the influence of its later owners, the Buxtons. Paycocke’s House has an intriguing history spanning 500 years. Constructed in the same year Henry VIII acceded to the throne, it has since witnessed a religious reformation and survived a civil war. Paycocke's has been connected to many people including a cloth merchant, a famous composer and an MP. e house has undergone many changes, new additions and removals throughout the years to reflect shifting trends and the needs of its owners. But what we're left with is even more intriguing as a result. e trapdoors that don’t lead anywhere, floorboards that have been covered over and bumps in our lawn all add to the character. Nikolaus Pevsener, the art historian best known for his guides of English counties, famously described Paycocke’s as “One of the most attractive half-timbered houses of England.” As a modern-day visitor to Paycocke’s you can discover the history of this building from the Tudor period when omas Paycocke built the front range, seek out the architectural features such as carpenter marks and new for this year we have included examples of what Coggeshall White cloth could have been. e cloth has provoked debate over the years because despite research it is not known exactly what Coggeshall White would have looked like. ere is new and detailed information from the early 1900s when Noel Buxton bought Paycocke’s, making a brave and controversial decision to take the then much altered house back to its Tudor glory. Ernest Beckwith, a distinguished and well-known local wood carver, was brought

1 8 M ay 20 1 5

into work on the restoration project. e garden at Paycocke’s was developed by Noel’s wife Miriam, when she and her husband lived in the house following its purchase by her husband’s cousin, Conrad Noel, in 1904. Miriam was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and spent time lovingly setting out the garden in this style. From 2008 the garden volunteers at Paycocke’s have been devotedly caring for and developing the garden. ere is a wonderful variety of roses and a collection of fuchsias. Nowadays visitors can enjoy a cup of tea and coffee in the garden and see artwork from the Coggeshall Art group, which is also available to purchase. A short walk away is the 13th century Grange Barn one of Europe’s oldest timber framed buildings which stands as a lasting reminder of the once powerful Coggeshall Abbey. ere is a display of wood work tools from a celebrated local wood carver on display. Similar to the tools that would have been used when the Buxton’s directed the restoration of Paycocke’s House. Paycocke’s is open Wed-Sun and Bank Holiday Mondays from 10.30am (garden only) 11am for the House and closes at 5pm. Admission is free to National Trust Members and for non-members a joint ticket to both Paycocke’s and Grange Barn is £6.50 per adult and £3.50 per child. ■

Braeside school

An educAtion for life

B

raeside School provides a structured and supportive environment for girls to grow. Our experienced staff, who are specialists in their chosen fields, also have a wealth of experience in dealing with girls. Students are taught in small groups with the opportunity to question and develop thinking skills on a daily basis. Pupils are supported by excellent teaching to achieve their academic potential. Our early years practitioners have the experience and patience to nurture and guide the early development of essential skills in each of our pupils so that they become confident in communicating with their friends and teachers from an early age. ere is a natural progression for all of our girls as they move up through the school, with challenge and opportunity appropriate to their needs both within the classroom and through exciting specialist work- shop

sessions and visits linked with the curriculum, resulting in them achieving excellent results at GCSE. Only two schools in the whole of Epping Forest improved their performance at GCSE in 2014, of which Braeside School was one, with 88% of girls achieving 5 or more GCSEs at A* to C grade including English and Maths. 31% of all grades awarded were either A* or A Braeside works very closely with Parents in order to support them and their daughters during the rig- ours of growing up. e well-being of pupils in terms of their emotional and physical development is as important to us as their academic journey, as one element of their lives rarely succeeds if other issues are causing unhappiness. eslie Eriera is a familiar and highly respected member of the community. Having been an accountant for almost thirty-five years, his local practice in Hainault (near Chigwell) is a vibrant hub of activity. Happily married for thirty-three years to his attractive wife Andrea, they have two very successful children. e eldest child Anton, is a high-flying barrister who attended Ilford County High School before studying law at Cambridge. eir popular and sociable daughter Sharelle, is currently working in London as an office manager. Leslie and I have known each other for many years. We both attended Raphael School (formerly Clarks College) in Romford before going our separate ways in pursuit of very different goals.

MH: So what inspired you to be an accountant? LE: I just always wanted to be an accountant. I couldn’t imagine myself being in any other profession. Remember how we used to discuss our ambitions on the 66 bus going home after school? MH:Of course I do. I also remember that even at the tender age of fourteen, you were fixated with golf. LE: Still am! Aside Andrea and the kids, golf is a lifelong passion. MH:I noticed the book you’ve published. Having read it, I absolutely recommend. Is it for sale? I smiled when I saw

the ‘golf theme’. LE: You don’t need to buy it. If a reader (of the Life magazines) would like to sign-up for a monthly newsletter on my website, I’ll send it to them direct with my compliments. If your business is successful, you’ve got more time for golf. MH:So aside business and golf, what else do you enjoy? LE: I love to travel. Just to relax and unwind. I’m available to my clients at most times and even in the evenings. It’s not always possible for them to see or speak to me during the day so I work around their schedules. So when I relax, it’s good to just unwind, be with Andrea and it’s a real bonus if I can watch the football too! ■ Simple StepS to Grow Your BuSineSS and plaY more Golf. ost of us at some point, have savoured that Eureka moment when everything feels just right and like a miracle, the answer to a problem magically appears and we feel at one with the universe. Now it’s great when it happens but more often than not… it doesn’t. I need the last few lines for a short story which is to be imminently published. Being a thriller, I need to tie up all the ends so the reader feels a certain completion to their journey. I need a Eureka! I need a drink! I decide to take a few minutes to just focus my thoughts, stretch aching legs and to rub a pair of tired eyes. Making a cup of tea for both refreshment and also as an excuse to get away from the computer, I wander around the kitchen. en go into the lounge. I do some breathing exercises. Drink the tea. Decide to make a coffee and to have some biscuits. e caffeine will probably be more invigorating than the tea. Concentrating on my thoughts and not the biscuit, I dunk a milk chocolate digestive into the coffee and it melts; disintegrates, and drops to the bottom. Plonk! Bye-bye-biscuit. Remnants of melted chocolate float to the top like debris from a sunken ship. Coffee transforms into something of a gloopy beverage. Do I drink it or get a spoon? Life’s full of quandaries. Perhaps the garden will inspire? Now with a cold mug of chocco-bikkie-coffee, iPod headphones in my ears, I sit impatiently tapping the garden table to the rhythm of my

Mars, planets, stars, life, UFOs… I wonder if, as I look up at the sky, is there another entity looking back at me? Do UFOs exist? Do aliens exist? Do we have intergalactic neighbours? Do they (like unwanted relatives) visit us when we least expect it? Do they live among us? e lyrics from Rock n Roll Suicide seem to be making a poignant statement as David Bowie’s impassioned plea blasts out: ‘Oh no love: you’re not alone….’

any of golf ’s global superstars will return to Wentworth Club, Surrey this May to compete at the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship. World number one and four-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy will be spearheading a title defence against some of the biggest names on the European Tour. McIlroy overcame a seven-shot deficit to emerge victorious on the iconic West Course in 2014 – a success that kick-started a dazzling season for the current Open and US PGA Champion. He faces tough competition from a worldclass line-up at Wentworth this year including victorious 2014 Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley and fellow Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell. McIlroy, whose fame now transcends the game with such brilliance, commented: “Growing up in Belfast, the BMW PGA Championship always featured high on my list of priorities along with the Major Championships. To return to Wentworth as defending champion is a huge

2 8 m ay 20 1 5

honour and I can’t wait to draw on the memories of 2014.” Rose has come agonisingly close to lifting the trophy at a venue he used to visit with his family as a starry-eyed youngster. Rose reached a pinnacle in his career when he captured the US Open title for the first-time in 2013. He said: “Our family lived close to Wentworth and I was always excited each May to attend the event with my dad. The BMW PGA is rightly regarded as the European Tour’s flagship event.” The BMW PGA Championship offers a superb package of world class golf, entertainment, celebrity-spotting and hospitality offerings and takes place over a six day period. The ever popular Celebrity Pro-Am on Wednesday 20 May is now firmly established as the curtain raiser for England’s biggest golf tournament and has once again attracted an impressive line-up of A-list celebrities. With further names to be announced, Irishman Rory McIlroy will be playing alongside Manchester United legends Phil Neville and Paul Scholes. Other confirmed names include sporting greats such as

DON’T MISS THE PARTY AT

POLO IN THE PARK! London’s summer social season starts this year with Chestertons Polo in the Park which takes place on 5-7 June at the ‘spiritual home of polo,’ Hurlingham Park, Fulham.

N

ow in its seventh year, the three-day sporting spectacle brings world class polo right to the heart of London. With its vibrant party atmosphere and thrilling polo on display, the tournament is now firmly established as one of the capital’s hottest tickets. New to this year’s schedule is the addition of an England International match which will take place in the evening of Friday 5 June. It will be the first England International polo match played at Hurlingham Park since 1939. The team taking on England will be announced later in the spring. For the rest of the tournament, six teams, representing cities from around the world, play with three-man teams on a slightly smaller field than usual, meaning the action is never far away from the spectator. The traditional rules are adapted to create a much more spectator-friendly game - perfect for polo newcomers. This year the visiting teams taking on the London home team are last year’s winners Abu Dhabi, Lagos, Singapore, Sydney and Buenos Aires. What’s more, the action on the side of the playing field is just as entertaining as the action on the field - with bars and hospitality spilling around the perimeter of the pitch. Mayfair’s famous nightclub, Mahiki Bar will be shaking up some amazing cocktails from its pitchside bar (which happens to be the longest pop up bar in Europe) whilst the Lanson Champagne Garden Bar provides a wonderfully civilised place to view the sport. The tournament kicks off on Friday 5 June, dubbed ‘Chukka Friday’ and is a favourite for corporates and their guests. Matches are played well into the evening and with

post 5pm tickets at just £10, it’s the perfect place to escape to after work. Saturday is traditionally known as ‘Ladies Day’ - a chance for the girls to glam up! This day is usually a sell-out long before the event, so it is advised to book early for this day to avoid disappointment. ‘Finals Day’ on Sunday 7 June is a fun actioned packed day for everyone, with extra entertainment laid on for children. Spectators can enjoy watching both the Final and Plate Final on this day and see the victors presented with the winning trophy. ur Editor has met up with the driving force behind Butterfly London’s recent growth. Tom Cheeseman, 27, who lives in Loughton, has been with Butterfly London as it has grown from a small family business, to an international brand and household name. EDITOR: So Tom, What is the secret to your success? TOM: Wow where to begin, Butterfly has been established for over 10 years, and has organically developed throughout the years. e design team are fabulous and with a Collection of jewellery like this, my part was so much easier! When I came on board, the company was in need of a ‘push’ on to the next level, and with my experience and the contacts I brought to the business, I was able to franchise the brand in to the UAE and Cairo whilst growing the UK and European sides of the business. EDITOR: We know that Butterfly was at both Westfield Stratford and Westfield London, for a long time, what

3 4 M ay 20 1 5

prompted the strategy to leave? TOM: Our time at Westfield was a fantastic, but we have shifted our focus. Our main priority is making Butterfly as easily accessible to our customers as possible. Which is why we have driven our efforts towards Butterfly being available in our customers local High Street. With the back up of our Website (www.butterfly-jewellery.com) if the local stockist

ost of us have areas of stubborn fat that are difficult to shift. Whether it’s love handles, muffin tops or bingo wings, there’s always one part of the body that seems unaffected by diet and exercise. ere are numerous cosmetic treatments that can remove this type of fat, such as traditional liposuction, but this is a particularly invasive and painful procedure that leaves unsightly scars on the body. It also requires a great deal of recovery time and has the potential to cause problematic side effects. But now you can achieve similar results without the risks associated with surgery. Courthouse Clinics in Brentwood offers Fat Freezing, an innovative technique that works as an effective, non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Fat Freezing is a completely painless treatment that removes inches of fat from areas on the body such as the thighs, stomach, back, arms and neck. It involves one of our highly experienced Medical Aesthetician’s placing a cup-like applicator device on the desired area, which helps to provide precise and natural-looking fat removal results. e handheld applicator gently sucks in the skin and unwanted fat and cools it to -7°C or -8°C. is temperature has been scientifically proven to be cold enough to destroy unwanted fat cells but is not cold enough to damage any of the surrounding tissues, rendering the process completely safe. ere is an immediate and noticeable change to the volume of fat in that area and for the next two months the effects continue to work as the fat cells are destroyed and flushed out via the lymphatic system. is leads to a

3 6 M ay 20 1 5

dramatic reduction of the fat layer, which can be enhanced with additional treatments. ere are no associated side effects, downtime or resulting scars with Fat Freezing, plus the procedure is completed in just 70 minutes! To book a Fat Freezing consultation with one of our Medical Aestheticians, please do not hesitate to call our Brentwood clinic on 01277 698 917. Alternatively, you can find more information by visiting our website at www.courthouseclinics.com. Courthouse Clinics provides non-surgical cosmetic treatments in ten clinics across the country. With award-winning service, innovative equipment, advanced techniques and an experienced team of professionals, we are proud to be named the UK’s number one doctor-led cosmetic clinic. ■

Changing peoples’ lives W

hen dentists carry out any treatment such as fillings or crown/bridge work, it is essential to make the bite very accurate so that the result is comfortable. e main way that dentists check the bite is with “bite marking” coloured carbon papers. is technique is only partially accurate. At Smile Design By Ash, we have invested in technology

called T Scan, which is probably the most advanced computerized software to measure bite forces available to dentists. Very few dentists in the UK have this equipment, or indeed the training to use it properly. How does T scan work? A thin plastic sensor is linked to a computer. e dentist places this sensor between the top and lower teeth and asks the patient to bite down. e computer sensor records the bite data very accurately, and this is stored on the computer in the patient’s records. e dentist can then evaluate the data and understand easily which teeth are meeting the most forcefully, and also which bite contacts occur first. It is then necessary to use the carbon papers to verify the information from the computer, before precise bite adjustments are made. wHaT do we use T scan for? At Smile Design By Ash, we use this modern technology extensively for our patients’ benefit. ese are some of the main indications: Checking the bite is very accurate after

a Smile Makeover: After porcelain veneers and crowns have been fitted, the use of T Scan will ensure a comfortable and even bite. is means that the restorations will last a long time without chipping or breaking easily. After implant crown and bridgework has been fitted: Implants are very strong and do not have any “give”. On the other hand, teeth naturally move up and down a tiny amount during biting and chewing. It is crucial to carefully measure the different forces on teeth and implants and then make relevant bite adjustments for the long-term success of the implant treatment. Treatment of headaches and bite problems: Often there are some minor bite problems caused by teeth being in incorrect positions. By using T Scan to identify these bite anomalies and making corrective adjustments will result in a more balanced and harmonious bite. Bite problems also often cause recurrent headaches and muscle tension. hayfever hell h ay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects one in five people in the UK. According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is a type of allergy. It happens when your body makesantibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It’s most common in children and, particularly, teenagers, but you can develop hay fever at any age. e symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose. What causes hay fever? In Britain, hay fever is mainly caused by grass pollen. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Tree pollen can cause hay fever too. Around a quarter of hay fever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen. Mould spores and weed pollen can also trigger symptoms.e pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and region to region. e amount of pollen in the air will affect how bad your hay fever is. ere’s more likely to be more pollen in the air on hot, dry, windy days than on cool, damp, rainy days. Research shows that pollution, such as cigarette smoke or car exhaust fumes, also makes some allergies worse. When is hay fever Worst? e time of year at which you begin to experience hay fever symptoms depends on the types of pollen you’re allergic to. Trees release their pollen in March to early May while grasses release pollen from late May to early August. Weeds and certain shrubs release their pollen in late summer. e hay fever season can therefore last from March to October. And if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic to more than one type of pollen, you may only have just two or three monthswithout symptoms in the winter before the cycle starts again. tips to relieve hay fever • Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to reduce the allergic symptoms of hay fever: • Keep windows shut at night and first thing in the morning • Stay indoors when the pollen count is high (between 50 and 150) • Wear wraparound sunglasses. • Put some petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils to trap some of the pollen. • Don’t mow the grass or sit in fields or large areas of grass. • Wash your hands and face regularly. • Avoid exposure to other allergens, such as pet fur, or environmental irritants, such as insect sprays or tobacco smoke. hay fever treatment As with most allergies, the best way to control hay fever is to avoid the triggers. However, it’s difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer. Even straightforward hay fever can be debilitating, causing runny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged-up nose and headaches. A range of over-thecounterproducts can treat the symptoms of hay fever, including tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and creams. Antihistamines are the usual treatment for the main symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, while steroid nasal sprays are the main treatment for a stuffy nose. hay fever and asthma Speak to your GP or pharmacist before you decide on a hay fever treatment. It’s particularly important to speak to your GP if you have asthma. Hay fever often makes asthma symptoms worse. If this happens, you may need to increase the dosage of your asthma medication. ■

The Significance of idenTifying healTh ProblemS for clienTS during Skin conSulTaTionS with frances furlong

A

s an experienced Medical Practitioner I see clients on a daily basis with a variety of different skin issues, ranging from skin diseases such as acne, rosacea and hyper pigmentation, congruent to this I also treat cosmetic problems such as wrinkles, sun-damage and scarring - all of which can have a deep psychological impact on an individual. Over the many years I have been treating clients it is not only necessary to consider the problem you are treating, but other potential problems that the client could be suffering with also. Many years ago I had a client who came to me complaining of tired, hollow eyes, the natural thought of an aesthetic practitioner would be to consider dermal fillers to help with this problem. However on assessment, I noted she had bulging eyes also, I asked the client if they had noticed this and they hadn't. I suggested they see an Opthalmologist firstly as safety is always at the forefront of my mind having worked in Laser Opthalmology previously. My instincts were right when the client called to thank me as she had thyroid related eye disease. One of the main causes of exophthalmos (bulging eyes) in the UK is thyroid eye disease, also known as Graves' Opthalmopathy. is is an autoimmune condition that affects around one in every three people with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) caused by Graves' disease. It is particularly common in women who are 30-50 years of age and people who smoke. An autoimmune condition is where the immune system (the body's defence against illness and infection) mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. More recently a client with acne pustules at the age of 40 years, who was naturally distressed, came to see me. ey had spent a fortune on facials, expensive products, light therapy, herbal and Chinese medicine but nothing seemed to be helping. I went through an in-depth medical history with the client and her many treatments. It appeared to me that no one had suggested the need for antibiotic support during these treatments or the fact that the client was suffering with acne rosacea, she had often told therapists that her face felt hot, flushed easily and the products and treatments were aggravating her skin post treatment, she was told however this was normal and to persevere. Acne, rosacea and acne rosacea are all medical skin conditions which in my opinion require medical

4 2 m ay 20 1 5

supervision in order to get the best results for clients. A combination approach to firstly treat the infection, then repair the damage, reduce vascular damage and then maintain with appropriate skincare and regular maintenance was how I managed this stressful condition for the client. Furthermore addressing good nutrition, appropriate supplements and identifying stress triggers in relation to the skin disease. Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition which principally affects the face. Rosacea causes facial redness and produces small, red, pus-filled pustules (bumps). Rosacea worsens with time if left untreated. It is often mistaken for acne or eczema, or some other skin allergy. e last experience I wish to discuss was a client who I treated last summer, she came in for her regular muscle relaxing injections to help soften her crows feet, on assessment I noticed that she had a strange looking brown mark appear. I asked her about it and it was new, when I had seen her four months previously it had not been there. She had recently come back from a three week holiday where she had a lot of sun exposure. I was concerned by its' appearance. I used the ABC method to exAmIne the mole. Asymmetry: If one side of the mole does not generally match the other side, this could indicate melanoma. Border: e border should have smooth edges. Colour: Black may be indicative of melanoma. Red, white and multicoloured moles should also be checked by a professional. Diameter: e size standard for moles is that they should be smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser. Elevation: Moles are ideally flush with the surrounding skin. Raised moles should always be looked at by a Dermatologist. e mole appeared to have three of the above symptoms, so I delayed her treatment and advised her to see a specialist immediately. e client called me a week later and it had been the start of a basal cell carcinoma. ■

TOP TIPS FOR EATING OUT

HEALTHILY

H

ealthy eating is more than just the odd piece of fruit or low-fat meal - it’s a lifestyle. It can be difficult to be healthy all the time, especially when everyone else is enjoying themselves. Take a meal out at a restaurant, for instance; do you always go for the healthiest option? Read these tips to help you make healthier choices when you’re wining and dining.

Here are some tips for making healthy choices when eating out: Choose fruit-based starters and desserts; these will contribute to your recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Choose wholemeal bread rolls over white for the extra fibre, which can improve digestion and may be protective against bowel cancer. Vegetable-based soups are a great option as they are filling and contain less fat than cream-based soups. Likewise, choose tomato-based sauces over creambased ones; containing less fat and calories. Choose fish - white fish is extremely low in fat and is a great source of protein, while oily fish provides omega-3 fatty acids - a ‘good’ type of oil

4 4 m ay 20 1 5

which has been shown to help protect against heart disease and may help prevent cancer. Go for grilled or baked foods over fried or roasted. A grilled lean steak can be an excellent choice, providing a rich source of protein and iron. Swap ice-cream for refreshing sorbet. Watch your alcohol intake - while one or two drinks a day may be beneficial to health and could help protect against heart disease and osteoporosis, any more than this can have the opposite effect. Slimmers should also try to stick to one or two courses and watch portion size. Try not to add salt at the table - most foods will already have been seasoned. Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure. Always make sure you have a side order of vegetables or salad - more importantly, make sure you eat them! Finally, if you feel that there is something indulgent on the menu that you simply cannot resist despite your best intentions, don’t be too hard on yourself. Denial in the extreme can lead to binging in the long run. Why not order one portion with two spoons? Half the portion means half the fat, sugar and calories - ‘fancy sharing, anyone’?

I have suffered for the past 20 years with excessive sweating to the palms of my hands, funnily enough I don't sweat much anywhere else. However it has made my life a misery, caused me embarrassment and more importantly makes me hesitate when shaking people's hands - I'm sure they think I'm rude. My GP has been very sympathetic over the years, my treatment options were aluminium salts that I have to apply nightly or fairly drastic surgery! I went for the non surgical approach, but the problem with the salts as you can see from my photos is that they made my palms very red and quite dry and sore, however my sweating was far less. A colleague told me about they had injections under their armpits to stop sweating with Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin. I went for a consultation and it was nice to know I'm not the only one that suffers with this awful condition. She explained how tiny micro injections into my sweat glands on the palms of my hands could block the sweat glands up to 6-10 months. I felt a difference within 7 days and it got better over the weeks proceeding. I went back for my review and had a small top up to two specific areas. My sweating has stopped, my hands don't feel as sore or look as red, more importantly my confidence is back, now I'm the first one to extend my hand out…

WOULD YOU ADD CHEMICALS

TO YOUR FOOD?

Then why put them on your skin… the body’s largest organ? Time and again we are drawn in by clever marketing but it’s time to get back to nature.

L

ast month we touched upon Ayurvedic principles and how mainstream products only provide a temporary cure to skin issues (then eventually stop working). is is a common concern when it comes to skin care and often leads to frustration and lots of half-full jars on the bathroom shelf. Ayurveda offers a different approach to the mainstream and the overriding reason why it has proved so successful is because it considers the person as a whole, not just their skin. It is essential that we do not separate the two, after all one cannot function without the other. With Ayurveda we consider the whole picture and look to strike a balance between lifestyle, nutrition and skin care. You nourish your skin both from inside and outside and our consultations take all of this into consideration. Chemicals are not only present in cosmetic products; they also exist in certain food types and are created by the body in response to things like stress. The organic myTh All of this affects the skin and the best way to encourage it towards optimum health is with the purest of products that it will not reject. e problem is that

4 6 m ay 20 1 5

‘purity’ is often misconceived and we can be fooled by the words ‘natural’ or ‘organic.’ In the cosmetic industry organic products can still contain synthetic ingredients and even those elements that are organic can still be irritants. While this might seems like nothing more than a little redness, irritants can also break down collagen and affect the skins ability to heal….and so the aging process quickens. is is why at Arissa I have chosen pertinent Ayurvedic products that follow traditional ancient methods of cultivation and pay attention to the energy of certain body areas. Rather than sitting on the skins surface (the oily film that often gathers throughout the day), the skin quite literally drinks them into the dermis, the deeper layer beneath the epidermis. ink of it as the most wholesome nutrition for your skin imaginable, created in small batches to maintain integrity and freshness. You may have tried natural and you may have tried organic, but now it’s time to experience the Ayurvedic Arissa journey of indulgence. We give you a personal prescription for skin care products that will help you harness your individual body's ability to maintain a flawless complexion. Once experienced you’ll never look back. ■

I have had problem skin from a young age and have struggled with most products as they all seem to cause break-outs or leave my face looking really greasy. After having treatment with a facial aesthetics nurse to control my break-outs I wanted to find a product I could use to help prevent ageing. After trying many products on the market I grew frustrated spending money with no results. I met Sona from Arissa through a colleague and went for a consultation. Sona recommended that I

use products that are 100% natural and made from foods and herbs with no chemicals. I was dubious about spending even more money but I put my trust in Sona and tried them out over the Christmas period. They actually worked! My skin doesn't seem as oily and I have noticed that if I go a couple of days without using the products, I have break-outs so I know they prevent this happening. I now have an effective skin-care Cheryl Burnall regime with effective products.

ingapore born Susie, first visited Smile Design by Ash in the first year of opening, her main concern was her crooked smile. When Susie became a patient of the practice she was very nervous. “I’m very irrational; I could get up and walk out of the practice, if I felt scared. I was terrified in the beginning, absolutely terrified of being in the dentist chair.” In order for Susie to overcome her fear she needed a dentist who was patient and caring. “When I walked into the practice, everyone was smiling and very welcoming. e practice décor was beautiful and it didn’t smell like a normal dentist. I think the warm and sincere greetings; put me in a much better mood in order to get into the chair.” After her complimentary consultation, Susie met Ash for a comprehensive assessment. It was clear from this appointment Susie required a fair amount of treatment in order to reach her goal of a straight, healthy smile. Susie was then introduced to Jyoti, who began her dental journey. Susie and Jyoti decided together the best way to achieve her new smile would be to use the Six Month Smiles braces system. A cosmetic braces system that can straighten teeth within 4 to 9 months. As Susie’s smile was very challenging Jyoti also consulted a second opinion from local orthodontist Mahesh Patel of First Impressions. “Jyoti was very professional when it came to seeking a second opinion; she even drove to me to the practice with her children so she could be there to get his advice!” Susie completed her smile transformation in 2013 and is over the moon with her new found confidence. “I still get so many compliments when it comes to my smile. My sister who

is a doctor could not believe the results, she said my smile has improved so much and she is amazed at how straight they are.” “Jyoti was very patient; she always put my interests first. She wasn’t like a normal dentist, she was extremely caring. She took her time with me even when I was being irrational. In previous practices I have visited I have always felt rushed and as though there is no genuine care. Jyoti has given me the confidence to feel comfortable and trust the dentist again.” ■ If you are nervous of visiting the dentist why not visit us for a complimentary consultation, call now on 020 85000544.

SophiSticated Style for Swimming poolS From summer florals to bold prints, the latest fashion trends are making waves in the world of interior design. But while the catwalk trends only last for a season, Origin Leisure designs and builds indoor swimming pools that are timeless, and created to suit your individual style and property. The award winning company takes us through the most stunning design features to give your pool house lasting style. Strong bold symmetry and geometric patterns rule the day when it comes to creating a contemporary space for your family to spend time together and entertain. is beautiful barn style pool house extension includes a swimming pool, gym, spa, and bar area, perfect for entertaining. e open structure has stunning gables, glass roof lanterns and an impressive timber frame.

Gingham is a design classic that rarely dates, so using the print in soft furnishings gives a fun country style to any pool house. An Olympic style pool building finished in a Neibla Foggy Aqua glass mosaic tile and living grey porcelain floor tile.

Muted white, silver and grey tones create an oasis of calm in any pool house. Add distressed beach wood and pale pebbles as extra nautical touches and you’ll have mastered two cool contemporary looks in one. An Olympic style pool house from Origin Leisure that has been finished in a reclaimed brick to match the existing house. White wash stain has been used to achieve the relaxing, muted tones inside.

Yellow, whether bright and bold or dulled mustard tones, maximises light and will give the interior of your pool house an uplifting mood. An Aquarea style pool building with large Neutro Sabbia pool tiles. e building features bespoke aluminium windows and bi-fold doors to let in an abundance of light and open up the pool house to the garden.

Stark white and creams give a pool house a bright and clean finish, all while making a statement alongside the aqua blue swimming pool. A Barn style pool house with a gym and relaxation area, complete with kitchen and bar. e swimming pool has been finished in an aqua blue mosaic tile with white detailing to match the interior fittings. ■

BuCkhuRsT hiLL “The setting and extent of the grounds had an immediate impact on us as we arrived to view what was a bungalow in need of improvement, sitting within approximately 5.5 acres. Living here is uncomplicated, and it’s the perfect party house and really comes into its own when we are entertaining friends and family. The kitchen and breakfast areas are the heart and hub of the home, where life goes on and everyone naturally seems to gravitate to.With the addition of the orangery extension there is a great flow between the three areas allowing us to be all together when the family visit within a casual atmosphere. What we love about living here is the sense of privacy that we have, as we are tucked away at the end of the long drive and, as previously mentioned there are acres of grounds that we can wander around and we also have direct access into Epping Forest land.”

ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ON THE COMMUTER BELT AT

ARBORETUM A

ccording to the ONS’ latest census*, 21% of the city’s workforce are now choosing to live outside of London and travel into the capital. One such individual following this popular trend was Marc Kellinger, 42, who moved into Higgins Homes’ Arboretum development located in the picturesque commuter town of Epping. After downsizing from his five bedroom property in Woodford, Marc wanted to move to somewhere where he could live with his two daughters, Aimee (8), and Ava (7), and still comfortably work in the city. He found the perfect work/life balance when he purchased his three bedroom terraced house at Arboretum. Marc comments: “I used to live in Woodford, so not too far away. I’ve always loved Epping. e location is great, there’s a high street with nice bars and restaurants, it’s near the countryside and it’s also near the underground with easy access to the motorway.”

The location is great, there’s a high street with nice bars and restaurants. As a Director of an IT consultancy company, Marc has to travel to his many different offices in London, Europe and Dubai, requiring a number of transport needs. Arboretum’s ideal location was a huge factor for Marc, he continues: “One of the main reasons I chose to move to Arboretum was due to its close proximity to a number of transport links. e development is very near to the train station so I can get to my London offices with ease. Along with this, the motorway is also nearby for me to get to the airport when I need to travel to my other international offices. I’ve always liked Epping as a location in general; it’s a village in its own right which means I get the best of both worlds, a quiet and picturesque area with an easy commute. Marc takes great pleasure from the fact that his property at Arboretum is a new build. He continues: “I chose everything from the kitchen to the bathroom and flooring; buying off plan allowed me to make it personal and opt for the best quality fittings. Being a new build gave me peace of mind as everything is brand new; I didn’t want to enter a house which may have hidden problems.” Marc purchased his property off plan in May 2014 as soon as the development was announced, making him one of the first to do so. As a previous off plan buyer he was already aware of the process, and advised: “It’s a way of guaranteeing the property you like. With so many developments cropping up and the high demand you’re going to be disappointed if you don’t get in there early. If you’re keen on the area where you want to be you have to make a decision fast.” Marc describes the customer service experience and overall buying process at Arboretum, “It’s been excellent; I can’t fault it even after moving in. e staff at Higgins Homes are in contact with me on a regular basis and very knowledgeable. ey have been honest throughout the entire process from the moment I walked into the show room. e customer

experience was not only excellent prior to completing the purchase; it continues to be so afterwards.” Since the launch of Arboretum, the large scale development is already 80% sold and, once complete, will comprise 149 new homes ranging from two bedroom apartments to three, four and five bedroom houses. Whether a first time buyer, starter family or early downsizer, the various apartment types and house designs provide something for everyone. Spanning a total of 3.6 hectares and surrounded by ancient woodlands, the development will also include 1.8 hectares of open green space and a landscaped garden square. e apartments boast en-suite facilities and outdoor balcony space whilst all homes are finished to a high specification with high gloss fitted kitchens by Commodore kitchens, integrated Smeg and Siemens appliances and bathroom suites by Ideal Standard. e homes also come with allocated parking whilst selected properties include a garage and rear garden. Just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the development, Epping underground station runs regular central line services to Liverpool Street in just 37 minutes and to Oxford Circus in no more than 47 minutes. e nearby M11 and M25 motorways also provide an easy route to surrounding the towns and greater London. Currently, a selection of two bedroom apartments are available from £345,000, in addition to a collection of 4 and 5 bedroom priced from £650,000. Help To Buy is also available for the apartments. ■
