ngrained in his memory, this prophecy was fulfilled in 1947, when he went to the United States to receive his Neiman Marcus award, bestowed each year on fashion luminaries by the famous luxury department store. This destiny of being called to travel from a young age, inspired Cordelia de Castellane for her spring-summer 2019 collection. Wearing colorful pieces, the children join her to discover new horizons alongside Christian Dior. From India to Italy to Japan, this collection unveils the House’s heritage in the form of a story straight out of the imagination of the Baby Dior Creative Director. For the first time ever, visitors are invited to enter the set of Gringotts Wizarding Bank as the Studio Tour unveils its biggest expansion to date. From Harry Potter first discovering Diagon Alley to the famous trio escaping on a Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon in their quest for a Horcrux, Gringotts Wizarding Bank played an important role in the Harry Potter film series. As the automobile came onto the scene, so did the pedal car, and for years it was the coolest thing on four wheels for youngsters. Today, tots can choose from oodles of plastic, mini toy cars… but unlike the pedal car, they aren’t exactly what you would call family heirlooms. These retro Jeep and Land Rover replicas most certainly are, however. They’re the pint-sized electric car designs from Toylander. Holly Willoughby’s outfits always get a lot of attention and since she headed to Australia to present I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! with Dec Donnelly there’s been no let up, with fans clamouring to find out where to buy every item she wears.

The saga starts in the land of the Arabian Nights, in the heart of a sumptuous palace. Echoing the setting’s fantasy, Cordelia de Castellane took silk and twinkling tulle and created fluid dresses of Persian red, ivory and gold. The escapade continues in Pondicherry. During this festive stopover, the boys get all dressed up to the nines. Tiger and elephant patches, sacred animal in India, as well as clocks, in a nod to the story’s magic watch, appear here and there on their clothes. Meanwhile, the girls glow in their Indian pink and

saffron dresses, or in safari jackets ideal for their desert excursion. Arriving in the Land of the Rising Sun, the young troop discovers the excitement of Tokyo. Pleated skirts and cherry blossom fabrics, inspired by Japanese school uniforms and mangas, transform the girls into model students. For the boys, it’s all about denim. In indigo or gray, as a jacket with a detachable fur lining or as pants, it provides comfort and freedom of movement. On bikes or skateboards, the team is now heading down California’s grand boulevards. Pastel colors, embroidered rainbows and sparkling poplin evoke the electrifying atmosphere of the United States. The girls, in sequined blousons, walk along by the palm tree-bordered ocean. Finally, the odyssey draws to a close on a sunny afternoon in Naples. The young adventurers laze in dresses and jumpsuits with precious embroidery. As for the boys, in immaculate shirts and jackets with phosphorescent buttons, they’re already thinking about where they’ll go next! they are fish scales! • Many sharks, such as sand tigers, lose up to 30,000 teeth in their lifetime, yet a new tooth grows back for everyone lost. * Sand Tiger Sharks look ferocious with a mouth full of pointy teeth, but their divers regularly jump in with them because they aren’t dangerous to humans. * To spot a Nurse Shark, look for the shark with the funny moustache! These dangley bits on their top lip are actually useful things called barbels and are covered in taste buds and are very sensitive, helping the Nurse Shark to find food hidden in the sandy seabed. * It might surprise you to know that Dogfish are actually a type of shark! Rarely growing any longer than 80cm in length, these cute little sharks are opportunistic predators which feed on a wide range of shellfish and crustaceans. STEP INTO GRINGOTTS WIZARDING BANK

at WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR LONDON – THE MAKING OF HARRY POTTER

F

or the first time ever, visitors are invited to enter the set of Gringotts Wizarding Bank as the Studio Tour unveils its biggest expansion to date.

36 feb/mar 2019

From Harry Potter first discovering Diagon Alley to the famous trio escaping on a Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon in their quest for a Horcrux, Gringotts Wizarding Bank played an important role in the Harry Potter film series. On 6th April, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will unveil the permanent addition allowing visitors to walk through the wizarding bank of Gringotts, the Lestrange vault, a gallery of goblins and so much more. Lined by towering marble pillars, the grand banking hall will be decorated with three magnificent crystal chandeliers and finished with real brass leaf. Inkwells, quills, ledgers and piles of Galleons, Sickles and Knuts will complete the goblin tellers’ desks as seen on screen. The Propmaking Department, led by Pierre Bohanna, created over 210,000 coins for the final two films alone. Gringotts Wizarding Bank is famously run by goblins. Walking through the imposing marble columns, visitors will discover the costumes and prosthetics belonging to Bogrod, Griphook and many other goblin bankers. Each prosthetic mask took weeks to create, with every hair individually inserted and veins painstakingly painted by hand.

About Wizarding World More than two decades ago, a young Harry Potter was whisked onto Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station, and readers everywhere were swept along with him into a magical universe, created by J.K. Rowling. In the years since, the seven Harry Potter bestsellers have inspired eight blockbuster movies, an award-winning stage play, and, more recently, the start of the Fantastic Beasts five-film series. People of all ages have been enthralled by these extraordinary adventures, set within an expanding universe, inspired by the vision of J.K. Rowling.

It took four hours to transform actor Warwick Davis into Griphook in the films which included him wearing black contact lenses and dentures with extremely sharp teeth to complete the goblin look. Once through the banking hall of Gringotts, visitors will enter the depths of the Lestrange Vault used to store the treasures of Bellatrix Lestrange including the Sword of Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff ’s Cup, one of Voldemort’s many Horcruxes. During filming 38,000 pieces of rubberised treasure were created the for the Lestrange vault including 7,014 Hufflepuff Cups. Here, visitors can try out a unique photo opportunity allowing them to step inside the Lestrange vault and surround themselves with treasure. Officially opening on Saturday 6th April, the 16,500sqft Gringotts Wizarding Bank expansion will be the Studio Tour’s biggest addition to date and has been designed and built by many of the original crew members who worked on the hugely

successful magical film series including Oscar® and BAFTA winning Production Designer Stuart Craig, Construction Manager Paul Hayes and Head Propmaker Pierre Bohanna. In addition Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will unveil an all-new 17,000sq ft lobby and café on 6th April. The new café will serve food and drink inspired by the Wizarding World and can seat up to 500 people. Entrance to the expansion will be included in general admission ticket price. Tickets must be pre-booked at www.wbstudiotour.co.uk or by calling the Studio Tour’s Visitor Services Team on 0345 084 0900 and cannot be bought at the attraction.

The Ultimate Toy Superior quality electric cars that children love to drive

A

s the automobile came onto the scene, so did the pedal car, and for years it was the coolest thing on four wheels for youngsters. Today, tots can choose from oodles of plastic, mini toy cars… but unlike the pedal car, they aren’t exactly what you would call family heirlooms. These retro Jeep and Land Rover replicas most certainly are, however. They’re the pint-sized electric car designs from Toylander. The UK firm began building the off-roaders in 1987, first with its debut ‘Mayfair’ model, and has since expanded to a number of variants in the present day, which include replicas of the Series I and II Land Rovers (Toylander 1 and 2), a vintage military Jeep (TL3 Army), as well as two tractors. All are designed to accommodate children, and an adult too if you fancy going along for the ride! All Toylander cars enjoy the features of a real car in miniature including ignition key, forward, reverse, foot and hand brake, lights, horn, folding windscreen and opening tailgate. An additional advantage is that speed is controlled through a linear potentiometer for a real throttle response from crawl to top speed, which makes for a nice improvement on the typical ‘binary’ On-or-Offswitch pedal that can be found on basic electric cars. Interested? Grab your tool box, because the Toylander can also be a do-it-yourself project. The company provides kits with all the bare essentials needed to build your own mini Land Rover – electric motor, controls, fuses, horn, wheels, axles and more – you simply order everything else you need and nothing you don’t. The Toylander 1 is based on the iconic Land Rover Series 1 that started production in 1948 and The Toylander 2 is based on the 1958 Series 2 Land Rover®. Their replica children’s Land Rover® gives firsttime drivers a taste of real-world motoring, and the 38 feb/mar 2019

Best for baby M

iss Tena Walters has been working as a consultant breast surgeon in Harley Street for the past 23 years. She is one of a minority of breast surgeons, who has had personal experience of breast feeding. Normally the production of milk from the breast and the demand for nutrition from the baby is in perfect balance. The more the baby feeds and stimulates the breast the more the hormone prolactin is released from the pituitary gland and the more milk is produced. This means that if the baby is latched on but doesn’t seem to be getting any milk, they are just putting in their order for the next day and when the baby is weaning, demand and milk production decreases. Diagnosing breast problems during pregnancy or breast feeding is more complex than normal as the density, high blood supply and swelling of the breast tissue makes examination, imaging and biopsy interpretation more difficult. Most abnormalities, which occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not sinister, but any breast lump should be investigated as rarely a breast cancer can occur. The most common cause of a breast lump during pregnancy or lactation is the normal bumpiness of the active and developing breast

46 feb/mar 2019

tissue but sometimes the lump is different from the normal tissue. For example a breast cyst, which is like a balloon containing fluid, which could be clear like water or milky, when it’s called a galactocoele. The contents of a cyst can become infected with bacteria forming an abscess. This is red, hot, tender and causes flu like symptoms. This needs to be aspirated under ultrasound guidance and the fluid should be tested to determine the most effective antibiotics. No amount of massaging will clear a breast abscess, cyst or galactocoele. Mastitis is an infection, which spreads throughout the breast making it hot and tender and this also needs to be treated with antibiotics. A persistent infection can be caused by Candida or thrush. If a breast lump is solid rather than cystic a biopsy is needed to remove a small amount of tissue, which can then be looked at microscopically. Most of these lumps are harmless and a condition known as a lactational adenoma, which disappears when breast feeding is finished. Breast feeding should be a great experience, but if problems occur seek help as they may be easily remedied. For appointments please call 01622 873058. Sedbergh Soap Company We travelled to Cumbria to meet Danish-born Dorthe Pratt to find out what motivated her to start her business, Sedbergh Soap Company.

What inspired you to start your business? It was a Spring morning in 2007; the TV was on and an advert came on for a well-known brand of soap promising to be nourishing ‘even for sensitive skin’. It got me annoyed, thinking out loud ‘utter rubbish, they have no idea what sensitive skin is’! At that point, I had tried many brands, including natural and organic ones, all making the same promise but none of them were any good for my skin. Having had severe eczema all of my life, I certainly knew what sensitive skin was. That was the catalyst, but I had no idea that this initial spark would turn into something special. How did you research the manufacturing and ingredients of your products? My early research into making my own products, started by finding out what was wrong with the ones I had tried already. It took hard work and a lot of determination to get started and our products span a complete range of bath and skincare products, which are all tested on eczema – my skin. Sedbergh Soap is not about products only for people with problem skin or eczema – that is very much the lowest common denominator; we just make products which feel good and smell nice and allows anyone to avoid ingredients, which can be harmful. Are your products truly SLS and paraben free? Yes, but we go a big step further. I am often asked about parabens and SLS. A lot of products are marketed as ‘paraben and SLS free’ but if you have sensitive skin this can 48 feb/mar 2019

be misleading as these well-known culprits are not the whole story. Did you know that the industry standard way of thickening liquid soap, shampoo, shower gel etc is by adding salt? It takes moisture away from the skin, which makes it even drier. Congratulations - We hear you are an awardwinning brand?! 11 years on an I am proud of the fact that we have 25 national awards to our name including several Gold awards for our Baby & Toddler products and twice our Lavender Bath Soak, made with salt from the Dead Sea, has won Best Pregnancy Product at the Natural Beauty Awards. What is the most rewarding and motivating part of running your business? In the early days, my main motivation was my own skin and I had no plans to start a business; it felt like the business just grew around me. These days it is hugely motivating to receive cards and emails from parents who have finally found something they can use for their little ones. Last week I received a drawing from a little boy, who enjoyed playing in a bubble bath for the first time; honestly it melts your heart. Tell us a bit more about how Sedbergh Soap has evolved… Aside from what you might call our usual range of products, we also develop and design bespoke toiletries for luxury hotels, spas, superyachts and Michelin-starred restaurants; really exciting projects. www.sedbergh-soap.co.uk

Fresh Air, No Compromise

id you know that Woolacombe beach, just 20 minutes from West Buckland School, is the nearest surfing beach to London? Did you also know that West Buckland is rated in the Best Schools’ Top 40 co-ed day and boarding schools in the UK (no.35 to be precise!) As well as being shortlisted for Boarding School of the Year in the TES Independent Schools Awards 2019. And yet, we are not a ‘hot house’ school. We understand the mental and physical benefits of an active lifestyle and access to the great outdoors. We also believe that our location does not compromise our students, who receive an outstanding education, but with all the benefits of space, fresh air and a healthy lifestyle. We believe that our children, from 3-18, should be allowed to grow up and develop in their own time. “Children stay younger, longer”, remarked one parent. At the same time, we want to be leaders in offering an education which is forward thinking, extends beyond the constraints of the classroom using our unique location - and ensures our students

are ‘future ready’ when they leave us. Teaching is challenging and stimulating, and staff and pupils, alike, adopt a ‘can do’ attitude to everything they do. Older students enjoy an extensive careers and enrichment programme, opening their eyes to all career paths and opportunities so that they can pursue their talents and passions and go on to study at some of the country’s best universities. Students also benefit from exceptional opportunities in sport, music, the performing arts and outdoor activities. With Exmoor and the Atlantic coast as our playground, students are able to trek, climb, surf, coasteer and run (for miles), as well as compete in all the major sports, play and sing in numerous choirs and ensembles, act in plays and take their artistic talent to soaring heights. Students regularly play representative sport; gain places to study music at conservatoires; go on to art colleges and drama schools. All pursue their dreams with confidence as well as an understanding of their place in a global community. Our motto is Forward Thinking and we’ve certainly been doing plenty of that! In the past ten years we’ve invested £14m into our facilities. A fantastic new co-educational Sixth Form house includes 70 en-suite bedrooms as well as spacious social ‘hubs’ and kitchens for our busy Sixth Formers, both and boarding. A new library and study centre includes IT resources, classrooms, a dedicated Sixth Form study area and a higher education and careers department. And finally, there is our award-nominated art, design and drama facility and the outstanding Jonathan Edwards sports complex, completed in 2011 and 2008 respectively. www.westbuckland.com

The Mathnasium Method can achieve better results than one-on-one tuition Maths seems to induce more stress than any other subject, leading to anxiety which can have a huge impact on a child’s overall learning. Little surprise then that when looking to support their child’s learning - perhaps leading up to a school entry exam or the 11-plus - many parents opt for a private tutor. However, experts agree that small group tuition, with children working alongside their peers, often works better than one-to-one tuition.

They begin to look forward to coming each week. Seeing children of different ages and different abilities sat with them helps remove any stigma.

Ensures students fully understand concepts

If you’re thinking of supporting your child’s learning, here’s six reasons to consider choosing Mathnasium…

It may better suit your child’s needs Students need extra help because the regular education system is not meeting their needs, but many private tutors are either current or exteachers, which usually means they will approach tuition from the same baseline that schools do. In other words, by doing more of what has already been proven not to work for that particular child. Conversely, the Mathnasium Method is all about assessing each child individually and finding the best way to make maths make sense to them – by plugging the gaps with alternative approaches to the school system.

With one-to-one tutoring, the tutor tends to do much of the work; explaining a concept, giving an example, and then showing the child how to work out the problem. As a result, some students develop ‘learned helplessness’; wherein they can perform well when their tutor is with them but significantly worse when alone. At Mathnasium, students are typically grouped four to an instructor, so that they receive enough attention to have a problem explained but can then work on similar problems by themselves (albeit under close supervision) and process new concepts without the pressure of constant one to one tutor involvement. Students are also taught how rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. Parents receive detailed monthly reports of progress (often more frequently), highlighting when concepts have been ‘mastered’.

Embraces flexible learning

With one-to-one tutors the work is generally done at set times and on predetermined subject matter. At Mathnasium, learning is more flexible. You can drop in, unscheduled, several times per week and work on a bespoke learning plan, so that children are learning more than they would in just a few hours of allocated school time.

“At Mathnasium, students are typically grouped four to an instructor, so that they receive enough attention”

Gives you increased peace of mind

Some private tutors are, of course, excellent but finding the right one for your child can prove difficult. At Mathnasium we use a variety of tutors from different backgrounds, therefore increasing the likelihood of students finding someone they gel with. In addition, as tuition is being delivered by hand-picked, extensively trained and DBS checked professionals in a heavily managed environment, we also offer improved safety and security.

Equates maths with fun

Some children can feel ‘singled out’ if they need extra tuition because in their eyes they are ‘failing’. However, at Mathnasium, children quickly make friends with others in their group and realise that they are not alone in needing a bit of extra help. 52 feb/mar 2019

Works in line with school At Mathnasium, students take a unique customised assessment which pinpoints their individual learning needs. The customised learning plan to close any gaps is then shared with your child’s school maths teacher for continuity. This doesn’t always happen with a private tutor. Mathnasium has centres in Amersham, Radlett, Chiswick, Crouch End and Clapham for further information about your local centre please contact 0161 791 0686 www.mathnasium.co.uk

BEAUTY Secrets from Tess Daly’s make-up artist. WORDS: KATIE WRIGHT

A

s fans of Strictly Come Dancing will know, the contestants’ make-up can be pretty extreme. From glittery eyes to bold blusher and even bolder lips, it’s a look that doesn’t always translate to real life. But there’s one person on Strictly whose make-up always looks both beautiful and wearable - and that’s Tess Daly. The make-up artist responsible for the presenter’s flawless face every week is Aimee Adams, who’s been working on the show for five years. “I don’t normally do TV work, I’m more print and advertising, but I agreed to do Strictly with her because I adore Tess,” says Adams, who is currently working with Rapid White to showcase the brand’s 1 Week Tooth Whitening Power Set. “My life is easy, because I’ve got a beautiful face who’s my friend. We just have so much fun, it’s not like work.” The industry pro knows that when it comes to Daly, she has a certain amount of freedom to experiment but she always sticks to the Strictly brief. “I would never give Tess a black, greasy smoky eye that’s smudged out to here, but in a magazine that looks really cool. Hers is very polished, television make-up.” As such, there’s a lot that we can learn from Adams’s weekly routine, from how to deal with excess shine to why you should be using lipstick on your eyelids. And the good news is her kit isn’t 60 feb/mar 2019

made up entirely of uber-expensive luxury brands as long as it gets the job done she doesn’t care if it’s cheap as chips. Here, Adams shares some brilliant backstage tips from Strictly and the products she swears by...

Find a foundation you love “Skin is the main thing that I really want to look good on TV. When I find something that I really like, I stick with it and I have stuck to the same foundation with Tess - It’s Make Up For Ever Ultra HD. It might not work on someone else, but for her it really works. It really stays on - she always says, ‘The make-up you put on me stays on all day.’” Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Liquid Foundation, £26.35 (was £31), Debenhams

Blot a lot “Unfortunately they’ve discontinued my favourite powder in the world, Cornsilk. That powder is my little secret, and blotting sheets. I’m addicted - I go through a pack a day, it’s like smoking! There’s a brand called Mai Couture, they make highlighter blotting sheets so you can blot it and it leaves just the teeniest bit of powder, I love those.” Mai Couture Highlighter Papier St Barts, £9.30 for 50 sheets, Birchbox

Too Faced Sweet Peach Eye Shadow Palette, £39, available from Debenhams

Lipstick isn’t just for your lips “When you use liquid lipstick, it dries in a paint-like film and it doesn’t move, and that’s why I like it on Tess’s eyes. I’ll do that and then I’ll put a bronze eye shadow over the top of it.” Sleek Matte Me Metallic Liquid Lip Rusted Rose, £4.99

Go for golden “Tess and I both love Too Faced, because they do lots of peachy colours. She loves anything bronzey, peachy or golden, and they do a lot of that.” Too Faced Sweet Peach Eye Shadow Palette, £33.15 (was £39), Debenhams

Buxom PlumpLine Lip Liner Infrared, £15, available from Cult Beauty

But I know it’s a trend, it’s a style and that’s what they want.” Daniel Sandler Watercolour Liquid Blush, £16.50, Cult Beauty

Mix your lippies “At Christmas you saw a bright red lip on Tess. It’s from Buxom, I love the big fat pencil. On Instagram people are always leaving comments on my pictures asking, ‘What lipstick is this?’. Some of them, like all my favourite things in the world, are discontinued, or I’ve mixed ten things to get that lip colour.” Buxom PlumpLine Lip Liner Infrared, £15, Cult Beauty

Don’t forget your toothpaste “Rapid White toothpaste is a very good thing for me to carry in my kit, because Tess is very conscious that she’s talking to people on TV, to all the contestants, so she brushes her teeth a lot. We have all sorts of mints, and gum, and toothpaste. Everywhere we go, it’s all about teeth and breath, which is fair enough because she’s talking to people all the time.” Rapid White 1 Week Power Teeth Whitening Set, £8.50, Boots

Go easy on the highlighter “I don’t mind it if contouring is done subtly, but when I see girls on the Tube where it’s like metallic highlighter, with a brown stripe... I swear to god I almost want to drop my business card into their lap!

HOLLY WILLOUGHBY Sparks a hiker boot frenzy. WORDS: KATIE WRIGHT

H

olly Willoughby’s outfits always get a lot of attention and since she headed to Australia to present I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! with Dec Donnelly there’s been no let up, with fans clamouring to find out where to buy every item she wears. While she’s been down under, the 37-year-old has changed her style significantly and there’s been one element that viewers have really responded to Holly’s footwear. Swapping her trademark heels for flat, chunky boots has resulted in almost every pair of boots she’s worn has sold out back in the UK. It started with some brown Grenson boots, followed by a black pair from Topshop and then the £295 Heidi boots from designer Camilla Elphick, leaving retailers scrabbling to get them back in stock. Willoughby is actually tapping into a trend that started with Gucci’s edgy hiking/biker boot hybrids and now the ‘hiker’ boot is all over the high street. Combining sporty laces and hiking-style eyelets with a biker boot tread and silhouette, the hiker boot is a luxe take on outdoor gear. Let’s be clear: Hiker boots aren’t really intended for walking expeditions (some have got a sizeable heel after all), but they’ll keep your feet warm and they’re sturdy enough for stomping around in even the worst winter weather. Also, as the fashionable Mrs Willoughby has suddenly made everyone realise, they can be paired with everything from mini dresses to leather skirts and denim cut-offs.

Getting back to you Are you struggling with a soft, sagging tummy? Many women suffer from loose stomach muscles and excess fat following pregnancy or extreme weight loss. A tummy tuck can resolve this and create a tight and sleek abdominal area. Meet Mr Chris Abela, a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon at Parkside Hospital who’s expertise can advise whether this popular procedure may be right for you. Chris has over 20 years of highly specialised training in cosmetic surgery completed in top centres around the world, including Cambridge, Los Angeles and Cape Town. Chris has qualified with both a fellowship in Plastic Surgery (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons and a higher degree in cosmetic surgery.

What is a Tummy tuck? A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) refers to a range of procedures that include one, all or a bespoke combination of:

problem and the surgery may need to be redone. Although unusual, there are plenty of cases where pregnancies have been successfully conceived and carried to term after tummy tuck procedures.

• Correction of lower abdominal scarring (including caesarean section scars) • Removal of excess or poor quality skin and excess fat from the lower tummy • Improvement of the tummy button appearance, correction of separation of the tummy muscles (rectus abdominis diastasis).

Is a tummy tuck just a cosmetic operation? Often due to multiple pregnancies or large babies, the rectus abdominis (6-pack) muscle has separated to accommodate the pregnancies within. In some cases, even after diligent exercise and physiotherapy, the separation remains. This produces an unsightly gap or bulge in the central tummy and/or causes functional problems when exiting a car or getting out of bed. Some patients complain of back pain whilst others fear their tummy wall will ‘give way’. Some top-performing athletes never regain their peak performance due to a change in their dynamic core strength and balance. Bringing the muscles back to the central abdomen restores normality and improves the function of the tummy wall, whilst improving these symptoms.

It can also be referred to as abdominal recontouring, if combined with liposuction, or abdominal wall reconstruction if a hernia is fixed at the same time. What happens in a tummy tuck? The surgery is performed through a low lying incision that is ultimately hidden by the underwear, with or without a scar around the tummy button. This allows the surgeon to see the muscle and tummy button stalk underneath the skin and fat, without seeing the contents of the tummy cavity. In the majority of cases the surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. Smaller ‘miniabdominoplasties’ can be performed in 1 hour and patients go home the same day. Larger procedures, such as a ‘floating’ or full abdominoplasty, take 2-4 hours and necessitate a hospital stay for 1-2 nights. Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck? Most patients suitable for a general anaesthetic are suitable for a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of the tummy wall. What exactly is required is determined by your goals and expectations and is only limited by the mobility of the skin. Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck? A tummy tuck is best undertaken when a woman has finished growing her family, because any further pregnancies could cause recurrence of the original

Is there anything I can do to improve the results from surgery? There are several things you can do to get the most out of your tummy tuck, such as: • Undertaking surgery at an optimum weight • Eating a healthy, balanced diet to promote safe wound healing • Quitting smoking to help prevent complications • Wearing a compression garment to speed up mobility and recovery • Maintaining diligent scar management, for better results over a short time • Organising childcare/help for the weeks following surgery, to ease your recovery process. Baby bed sheets, soft cotton terry bath sets and cute embroidered bibs are just some of the products that the recent Italian brand “Lime - Made in Italy” offers on its online home and newborn linen store, handcrafted in Tuscany. It’s products are the results of a long process: the idea that arises and becomes a design, entirely handmade. This is only the first chapter. Tests on top of tests are the basics to choose style, colours and textiles laying the foundations for creating articles one by one. The punched drawings, imprinted on the fabric with a perfect handcrafted technique go through the hands of the embroiderers who start to give them life, with great embroidery threads. Finally tailors carefully go through to the final details, and they can start to see the final product, ready to be ironed with care and nicety. At the end everything that was just a thought, it becomes real, just as an artwork. That’s what Lime does every time that creates one of its products, adapting them perfectly to any liking and home style. The touch of freshness combined to the high quality of its products are the strength of the Made in Italy.

tips for better sleep during pregnancy Empty your headspace before you go to bed. We all have busy lives. There’s always something else waiting to get done or a gazillion little things you need to organise in your head on a day to day basis in order to get the logistics of modern life to actually work. Some neuroscientists claim that an average human has about 50 000 to 70 000 thoughts in their head per day. No wonder it can feel a little busy up theresometimes ha-ha.Have you ever gone to bed after a long day, but as soon as your head hits the pillow you suddenly feel wide-awake? Like, no matter how hard you try your brain simply won’t shut off ? That is actually your brain trying to tell you that you need to de-clutter upstairs! To set yourself up for good sleep you need to allow your brain and body to winddownafter a busy day. Turn off your phone, computer screen or TV for the last hour to half hour before you go to bed. Read a book or listen to some relaxing music, and take 5 minutes to write down everything (no matter how little!) you think you need to remember for the next day on a piece of paper. That way you empty your headspace and make space for some nice, restfulsleep.

Beware of sleep debt You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant. Why? Because you are actually growing a tiny little human in there and that takes a lot of energy from your body. Sleep debt is the difference between the amounts of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. The good news is that, like with all debt, with some persistent work you can catch up and repay it– though it won’t happen in one extended sleep marathon. Taking a small daytime nap every day plus tacking on an extra hour or two of sleep during the night is what is going to help you stay in good sleep balance.

Keep it cool After you conceive, your body temperature will go up by an average of nearly one degree due to an increase in your body metabolism. Now, that may 70 feb/mar 2019

not sound like a lot but believe me it is noticeable. Your body naturally recognises that it has to take care of two, and thus increases it’s normal activities leading to an increase in body temperature. Keep your bedroom extra cool and use linens that allow for proper circulation of air. Also, avoid exercise, warm baths/showers and caffeinated drinks the last 2-3 hours before you go to bed.

Feel free

“You need way more sleep than usual when you’re pregnant”

There’s nothing more irritating than the feeling of restrictive clothing when you’re trying to relax, right? Add a growing belly into that equation and it can feel near impossible to ignore that irritating bra or that uncomfortably curious brief when you’re trying to sleep. My best recommendation is that you sleep naked. No clothes to irritate you or restrict circulation in your body, and as a bonus it is also healthier for the “downstairs” department. If you are not comfortable with sleeping naked, at least make sure to wear something in stretchy, natural and breathable material. As you approach the end of your last trimester, turning over in bed can get quite challenging and your mattress may feel like it has Velcro on it. If you don’t have a partner who’s happy to wake up and give you a much-needed push as you roll over, try sleeping on a silk satin sheet with silk bottom or brief.

The magic is in the proper support Sleeping when you’re pregnant is different. Your body is in constant change and as your belly grows you will feel the need for body support during sleep. Using the bbhugme pregnancy pillow from early on in your pregnancy will not only help you sleep and rest better, but it can also help in the prevention of common low back- and pelvic pain (SPD) associated with pregnancy. Thousands of women have already tried the bbhugme pregnancy pillow and they love it! If there is ever a time in your life you should invest in sleep, it’s during your pregnancy. Remember, you are sleeping for two now. Dr. Hilde, Founder of bbhugme www.bbhugme.no

MONITORING BABY’S MOVEMENTS DURING Pregnancy The charity Kicks Count explains why being aware of your unborn baby’s activity patterns matters. WORDS: Lisa Salmon I’ve had one stillbirth and now I’m pregnant again - but I’m paranoid that if I don’t feel my baby move, it means there’s something wrong. How important are baby movements, and am I right to worry about them? Elizabeth Hutton, CEO of the baby movement charity Kicks Count (kickscount.org.uk), says: “Your baby’s movements are a sign they’re well. There’s no set number of movements you need to feel, you just need to get to know what’s normal for your baby. “If you notice a change in your baby’s regular pattern of movements, it’s important to report it to a midwife or maternity unit immediately. Even if it’s very late at night, don’t go to sleep with reduced movements - maternity units are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also, don’t be tempted to use handheld dopplers or mobile apps to check for your baby’s heartbeat. The presence of a heartbeat doesn’t mean the baby is well. “Pregnancy after a loss is a particularly anxious time. While a reduction of movements doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong, the 74 feb/mar 2019

majority of mums who have a stillbirth (67%) do notice a reduction in baby’s movements beforehand. This is why it’s so important to report every episode of reduced movements, even if you’ve been reassured on previous occasions. “Kicks Count have ‘Rainbow’ bundles designed for mums who are pregnant following a loss. Parents expecting a ‘Rainbow Baby’ (a baby born following the loss of another) will receive two bundles as part of the project. One will include a Kicks Count wristband to help them monitor baby’s movements, and an ‘I’ve had a previous stillbirth/ neonatal death’ sticker for their notes, plus vital information about baby movements. The second is a sibling bundle, including the book to help explain baby loss to young children, and two small teddies one for the child to look after during the pregnancy, the other to give to their newborn brother or sister. “The bundles are available free through bereavement midwives and can also be purchased via the Kicks Count website, where there’s more information about baby movement and pregnancy advice.”

Nappy talk What’s normal, and what should parents get checked out? Minor genital problems and toileting issues are common in babies and toddlers and may be easily addressed if caught early.

Bed wetting

Testicular problems

Bed wetting is common in both boys and girls. Although most children will be toilet-trained sooner, accidents and bed wetting up to the age of five years are entirely normal. Frequent bed wetting will usually resolve itself and isn’t a concern but if your little one has frequent day time and night time wetting accompanied by the need to go to the toilet very often and with urgency, a paediatric urologist should be consulted. These symptoms are often associated with constipation and urine infections, which require early management.

Around 3% of baby boys are born with undescended testes. This generally isn’t a cause for concern because in most cases the testes will drop into the scrotum by six months of age. If this hasn’t happened it is best to consult a paediatric surgeon as testicular function may be impaired if testes are not in the correct position at one year of age. Once a specialist has examined your baby, you will be advised on a course of action. In many cases the testes is ‘retractile’ popping in and out of the scrotum - and would need to be kept under observation, but usually does not require surgery. If it does not come down into the correct position easily but it is easy to feel in the groin, then surgery is recommended to release the testis and fix it in a pouch in the scrotal sac. If the testis cannot be felt in the groin, the specialist may recommend looking into the tummy with a telescope to locate the testis and bring it into the correct place. Another common problem in baby boys is a scrotal swelling, caused by a harmless, self-revolving collection of fluid around the testis. In this case specialist review is recommended to distinguish swelling from a hernia which requires surgery more urgently.

Foreskin problems Most uncircumcised baby boys have a foreskin that won’t retract because it is still attached to the head of the penis. This is completely normal and shouldn’t cause any concern as long as your child is urinating well with a good stream. You should avoid forcing your child’s foreskin back as it may be painful and could result in scarring. However once the foreskin is retractile boys may need to be reminded to pull it back into place to avoid it getting stuck behind the head. Some parents may want their sons circumcised for cultural or religious reasons. The best age for this is before eight weeks old, if performed under a local anaesthetic. It is safer and less painful for older boys to have a general anaesthetic – either way recovery is quick and boys go home the same day. 76 feb/mar 2019

If you have any questions or concerns about the health of your child then see your GP. If appropriate they can refer your child to a paediatric urologist for further investigation. For more information, visit bupacromwellhospital.com/skyline

Top tips for a gender-neutral nursery words: Grace Tindall, founder

of Scandibørn

• Keep your base neutral - The first rule of Scandi styling, keep it simple. Use white or light wood and a colour palette of muted pastels, neutrals or monochromes as the base. Using these neutral tones means you can add more colourful or graphic accessories in the form of cushions, wall stickers, storage, rugs, mobiles and artwork – items that can easily be changed when the child grows up. Using simple fabrics for a nursery means you can customise the look as often you like. • Design the nursery with longevity in mind - If parents are planning on having more than one child, it’s useful to know that the things they buy now will be used again. Gender neutral decoration can be the most practical way to design a nursery. Invest in classic pieces for the nursery like the changing table and cot and opt for timeless pieces that won’t date and can work for either gender. Think about furniture that is built to last and can be passed on to future generations. Just landed at Scandibørn is the beautiful bamboo handmade crib, which you will want to hold onto forever! • Think about how you want it to feel - This gives you a great starting point for designing your nursery – do you want it to feel bright, fun, magical, calm or cosy. You can then start to choose your colours, textures and décor items that fit with that theme. • Be brave with colour - gender neutral doesn’t have to mean everything is white, grey or beige. Add colourful accessories as accents or statement pieces. Mustard and warm yellow tones are fantastic happy non-binary colours and teamed with the right hues can work for either gender. Rainbows and constellations also work for both. Our Rainbow Wall hanging and star prints canopies have been flying off the shelves for both girls or boys. • A canopy - a canopy can add a beautiful touch over a cot or in the corner of the room as a cosy nook to read or for the baby to play. At a Scandibørn, we have multiple canopy designs in almost every colour you can think of. My personal favourites are the star print designs in navy or ivory, both adorned with gold stars. • Storage should be plentiful but pretty - Toys, bedding, baby equipment, books and numerous 80 feb/mar 2019

knick knacks which come part and parcel of every nursery need a home which isn’t on the floor. We love woven or fabric baskets which can house all manner of items again textures and designs that work for both. The Play & Go drawstring bags can tidy up small toys in an instant. • Add personal touches to make your nursery unique - Accessorise your wall with graphic prints which can work for both genders. We love the monochrome posters from Wonder & Rah and Mini Learners all available at Scandibørn. • Strategically placed lighting A dimmer switch and a couple of lamps around the room mean you can always control the level of lighting according to the need and during the bedtime routine. If baby wakes during the night, little night lights which are not too bright can easily help you find your way round – we love little nightlights perfect for a bedside table as well as our animal lighting which works for either gender. • Make shelving a feature - A set of shelves in the nursery is not only practical but can easily be transformed into a focal point with a few carefully chosen items. Add photos, books and a few wooden toys and décor items. Rose in April, String Shelves or leather strap shelves, are all timeless in design and gender-free. • Fit for purpose flooring - I’d always recommend a hardwood or laminate floor in a nursery, inevitable spillages are much easier and less stressful to handle, especially in the middle of the night! However a rug is a must, it makes it feel more cosy and can also provide a place to play, our playmats and adventure rugs fit the bill for most nurseries, if you want something more simple, then we love the neutral tones of our new Lorena Canals collection - all machine washable too! • Work with the space you have - Sounds simple but it’s so tempting to get carried away with filling the nursery with ‘stuff ’. If you have a small nursery use light colours and try to limit the amount floor space taken up. Add three tiered shelving, wall hooks which you can hang an outfit from or a storage bag. www.scandiborn.co.uk

Baby Steps Nannies

answer the question, why trust us with your childcare?

D

ebbie as a mother herself believes that choosing childcare to fit around your individual family is not only a daunting prospect, but one that most families struggle with. This is down to the huge array of childcare options available out there; do you choose nursery? Will a nanny fit our budget? Could a childminder work around my hours? What does an au pair do? Baby Steps Nannies was built on the ethos that they would only ever place a nanny that they would trust with their own children! Lou also has the benefit of first-hand nannying experience, working as both a nanny in the UK and overseas, giving her that practical knowledge on what the life of a nanny entails. With both aspects of experience bought together to create Baby Steps Nannies, they have been thriving within London and Surrey and have placed many top-class nannies with families in need of childcare! This has led to an impressive array of testimonials from families who were happy with the bespoke and personal service they provide. There clients have described the team at Baby Steps Nannies as “incredibly helpful” “extremely attentive” and “really friendly” which is the ideal mix when making such big decisions with regards to your child’s future. Nannies are usually seen as an extension of the family, highlighting the importance of choosing the right person to care for your children. They could be there for your child’s first step or help with potty training, therefore its essential that your childcare matches your needs as your child develops from a tiny baby to a noisy teenager, because before you know it, they’ll be off to Uni! Are you dreading returning back to work as your maternity leave is coming to an end or is the nursery pick up getting tighter every day?
