BabyBjörn is now launching Baby Carrier Move, which is designed for parents with an active, social lifestyle who want to take their baby with them from day one. The baby carrier has built-in back support and a waist belt that distributes weight away from the shoulders, as young babies grow heavier surprisingly quickly! Many babies love being carried in a baby carrier, and so their parents need to be able to babywear comfortably for long periods.

FESTIVE FUN PLAY TIME Perfect for Christmas gifts, a new collection of colourful wooden children’s toys, is now available from Historic Royal Palaces online shop at www.historicroyalpalaces.com and in selected palace gift shops.

set the scene “Creating a Christmas scheme with the little ones is a great way to channel the delirium of the festive season into a fun activity. I tend to leave my elves in charge of the simple painting tasks, like creating a ‘Santa Stop Here’ sign for their easel,” says grandmotherof-three Annie. “Something we love doing together is foraging for natural decorative accents; finding branches, pine cones, and sprigs of ivy to Chalk Paint™ for Father Christmas to admire when he delivers their stockings. Going on these walks gets the kids imaginations’ going as they come up with very creative stories which you can translate into all sorts of painterly ideas,” explains Annie. www.anniesloan.com

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Moccis hand-sewn moccasin slippers make a great addition to a Christmas Eve box. And the good news is they come in both adult and children’s sizes so the whole family can have matching cozy feet. www.moccis.co.uk

A CRACKING CHRISTMAS Waltz your way into Christmas with heritage toy manufacturer Steiff ’s Nutcracker collection. BRING THE MAGIC TO LIFE Introduce your children to their very own elf, who stays in your house for the entire month of December, sent from the North Pole by Santa to keep a watchful eye on your children, whilst also causing a bit of mischief along the way. T

he Junior Collection for Emporio Armani Autumn/Winter 2019-20 continues to draw inspiration from the creativity of the adult Emporio Armani looks, featuring new and vibrant pieces for kids with a light and playful spirit. Logo motifs are increasingly bold this season and are a constant presence: on decorative bands and side piping, on patches of all sizes, on accessories and used in all-over prints. The detailing on sweatshirts, T-shirts and knitwear makes a special statement: jacquard logo bands alternate with the names of some of the world’s most famous cities, expressing the international spirit of the brand. The logo not only reinforces Emporio Armani’s identity; it provides the looks with contemporary, urban flair. Animal print is the star of the girl’s collection: giraffe-spot references are offered in army green, pink and black, as well as fused with camouflage or floral patterns in bright green, powder pink and coral, for a completely unexpected twist. Spotted prints are featured on jacquard pieces, chiffon dresses, sweatshirts, sleeveless tops, skirts, reversible bomber jackets and even as details on trainers and accessories. For boys, animals make an appearance in stylised designs on T-shirts, jackets and

12 OCT/NOV 2019

sweatshirts in shades of burgundy, olive green, navy blue and seafoam, all paired with checked shirts. Accessories complete the range, and, in keeping with the clothing, they are colourful, urban and have the logo as the focal point. The Emporio Armani eagle can be found on shoe straps, as an all-over motif on backpacks and bags and in a maxi size on baseball caps. Onesies, rompers, hats and bibs for little bundles of joy feature sporty details and have customised “baby” versions of the collection’s animal designs. Emporio Armani AW19 also presents a special junior collection entirely dedicated to going back to school: one of the most important times of year for every child. Back To School offers a selection of fun, urban clothing and accessories to enrich the winter wardrobe. The range is composed of an assortment of formal items, made available alongside pieces with sporty flair. This collection sees the perfect union between spontaneousness and formality, resulting in a range that makes the end of summer that bit more exciting. The collection is available now in select Emporio Armani Junior retailers including Harrods, Selfridges, Childrensalon, Child’s Play and at www.armani.com

HOLLY WILLOUGHBY IS VOTED

BEST-DRESSED CELEBRITY MUM HERE’S WHY SHE’S SUCH A STYLE ICON

The TV presenter beat the likes of Victoria Beckham and the Duchess of Cambridge, says Katie Wright.

R

ecently, eBay conducted a survey on ‘school run’ fashion and asked 1,500 mothers who they thought was the UK’s best-dressed celebrity mum. It should come as no surprise that Holly Willoughby - whose personal style is so popular she can cause items to sell out in a matter of minutes when she wears them on telly - came out on top, taking 30% of the vote. In second place with 17% was the Duchess of Cambridge, who’ll be taking Princess Charlotte to school for the first time this month, while Victoria Beckham and Emma Willis each scored 15% of the vote.

22 OCT/NOV 2019

Willoughby shared an Instagram post yesterday as she dropped off son Chester for his first day of school, writing that she was “full of a whole host of emotions watching him walk through the classroom door”. The mum-of-three didn’t disappoint with her school-run style either, wearing a chic grey blazer, pink printed shirt and a cool leopard print crossbody bag. But it’s Willoughby’s on-screen outfits that fans love the most. In fact, the 38-year-old gets so many comments from viewers asking where the clothes are from that she always makes a point of sharing her ensembles

“The mum-of-three didn’t disappoint with her school-run style, wearing a chic grey blazer, pink printed shirt and a cool leopard print cross-body bag”

on Instagram with the tag #hwstyle and listing where items are from. On the whole, her style is typically feminine - a pretty printed dress that’s slightly cinched at the waist is a HW staple. Whether it’s floaty and midi length or an A-line mini, the shape really suits her figure. Similarly, if the bubbly blonde wears a skirt, she always chooses one that emphasises her waist, often pairing a floaty midi style with a fine knit jumper. As for shoes, Willoughby keeps it simple with single-strap sandals in summer and an array of ankle boots in winter. That’s one of the major reasons she’s such a style icon - simplicity. Focusing on block colours and clean lines (with very few accessories) means that whether she’s sat on the This Morning sofa or being team captain on Celebrity Juice, Willoughby never overdoes it. Likewise, when the occasion calls for something a bit more glam, Willoughby knows how to bring the glitz. While presenting Dancing On Ice, she gave us 10 weeks of incredible floor-length gowns, showcasing everything from powder pink Peter Langner to sexy black Versace. The stylish star always delivers on the red carpet, too, and has a penchant for fairy-tale princess frocks. Designer dresses aside, if you want to get the #hwstyle look, it’s actually quite accessible, because Willoughby tries to wear high-street pieces as much as possible. She recently partnered with Marks & Spencer on the Holly Loves edit, showcasing a selection of pieces each season that get the HW seal of approval. The summer collection includes a cream A-line denim mini skirt, a monochrome midi dress and linen belted shorts - we expect the autumn edit will be unveiled soon. As for knitwear, Willoughby wears a lot of jumpers from J Crew and Pure Collection, while her dresses and skirts are from brands like Reiss, And

Other Stories and Oasis. Footwear is the only area where the presenter has rather expensive taste, favouring the like of Stuart Weitzman for suede court heels. But she also sometimes chooses high-street brands like Office. With Holly back on This Morning, there’s lots more #hwstyle to look forward to this autumn, so keep your eyes peeled for more fashion tips from the UK’s best-dressed mum. OCT/NOV 2019 23

The D Throne SA luxury Electric toy car built for the mini millionaire in your life

L

uxury cars often make heads turn when they drive by in their all-elegant gleaming avatars. This though, is hardly ever the case when you see a kid zooming around in a cute little toy car. However, here to make your jaws drop is the D Throne S Electric. For those of you with a love of luxury vehicles, this is a one in a million chance to make your child have the same tastes as you - and the quality of the craftsmanship is unparalleled considering that it’s intended for use by a child. Outrageously stylish and well made, boasting a design aesthetic inspired by the vehicles of the early 1900s, there is an awful lot to love about these contraptions for the little person in your life. The four-wheeled work of art bears all the hallmarks of craftsmanship one might associate with a luxury brand.

“There is an awful lot to love about these contraptions for the little person in your life” Luxury cars often make heads turn when they drive by in their all-elegant gleaming avatars. This though, is hardly ever the case when you see a kid zooming around in a cute little toy car. However, here to make your jaws drop is the D Throne S Electric.

28 OCT/NOV 2019

The super-luxe D Throne S is painstakingly designed and is in all probability the most luxurious toy your child could ever own. The tiny automobile also offers you a perfect reason to bond with you little one, with a space on its rear that easily allows an adult

“A great attention to detail can also be seen in the exterior and interior design of the car” to hop on board. Parents can also activate different modes on the smart controller and turn the D. Throne S into a motorised or non-motorised stroller. Designed by Seoul-based Hyunsoo Choi and Taeno Yoon at Joongho Choi Studio, D Throne is certainly no ordinary car manufacturer – they are currently on their third generation of their electric cars which just seem to be getting better and better with time. A great attention to detail can also be seen in the exterior and interior design of the car with finishes of exquisite car enamel and hand-made leather seats, four-inch aluminum wheels, side LEDs and working headlights for safety. This model also has been composed by simply dividing its body parts into two sections, which are top and bottom, using plastic molding techniques. In addition, it is designed to simultaneously configure gold grill parts located in front of the body, and a fender structure attached to each wheel, which maintains a design of a classic car. Concurrently, it has implemented a user-friendly feature that allows users to safely and easily manage and use the car. The luxe little car can be purchased in black, khaki, and. an off-white colour (complete with shimmering copper accentuations in both models). If you can afford to pamper your child silly (with no monetary limits whatsoever!), then buying him/ her the luxurious D Throne S is probably the ultimate gift. The rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of driving time, so a family can enjoy outdoor activities while it is available to convert the mode in situations when carrying children in something like a stroller. It has slip-proof breaks to prevent the car slipping. To have these various functions possible, the structures of the design and appearance have been delicately constructed by placing the parts and accessories though the engineering technology during the electronic car development process. The Korean electric car manufacturer has certainly made it big by going small, and counts amongst its esteemed clients Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Al Maktoum, the Crown Price of Dubai, who placed a customised order blinged out with over 2,000 Swarovski crystals.

Dimensions of the D Throne S are 40”H x 23.5”L x 15”W and can hold up to 200kg. For those who really want to spoil their child with a piece of automotive awesomeness, this is surely the chief candidate for the job. Interested in designing a varied range of objects, Joongho Choi and his team have participated in numerous projects ranging from lighting to IT electronics and furniture. Building partnerships with various companies including American Standard, 3M, Jabra, Samsung, Banyan Tree and etc, they were introduced and awarded by several globally known media. Their brand philosophy is to create a product that is based on the reality, and the comfort of comfort for a long time.

MUSIC IS GOOD FOR BABIES! R esearch shows that early exposure to music supports a child in almost all areas of development – music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other activity! Newborn babies have a highly sensitive ear and an abundance of genes and synapses ready to respond to music. And if that’s not enough, music is great fun and a wonderful way to share precious time together. How can you incorporate music into your child’s day? 1. Try to punctuate your day with familiar tunes so that your child associates music with a happy routine. Babies take comfort in your voice and singing to them is the most magical sound in the world! 2. Instead of humming the tune of your favourite nursery rhyme, use articulated and exaggerated words and sounds. This helps your baby build up a bank of vocabulary and speech sounds. Speech development starts at the listening and mimicking stage. 3. Dance and sing with your child all the time! Dancing together is great way to connect your little-one to the beat and rhythm of all types of music. 4. Regularly attend a quality, age-specific, interactive baby music class – Monkey Music run lots of fabulous classes across London. 5. Babies and toddlers love making their own music. Expose your child to musical toys and baby friendly instruments. Raid the kitchen cupboards for wooden spoons and pan lids! 6. Listen to lots of different kinds of music – you might be surprised at what your little one enjoys. 30 OCT/NOV 2019

At Monkey Music we are passionate about the value of structured music classes that support all aspects of a child’s development. Captivating, perfectly paced and full of laughter and smiles, our award-winning classes are perfect if you’re looking for a stimulating musical environment in which to make friends and share precious time with your little-one. “I love the look of wonder on my little one’s face as she experiences music. I love the inclusivity of the classes. I love the gentleness of the activities. I love being able to introduce her to these new experiences in a knowledgeable safe and fun way. I love the teacher’s kindness and understanding. I love the fact that I still get to bang a drum!” Monkey Music is the highlight of the week for lots of families, why not get in touch and arrange your first FREE class. www.monkeymusic.co.uk

‘Why I decided to have a nude portrait done’ Telegraph journalist Erin Baker describes her experience on artist Pamela Lloyd-Jones’ website, www.pamelalloydjones.com.

E

rin’s experience resulted in 2 nude art works to hang on her walls and a realisation that she is ‘OK, just as I am’. It’s all about accepting yourself at last. Therapy of sorts.’ Pamela delights in creating art works of real women. Women come to her to record prepregnancy bodies, to delight in their blossoming pregnant bodies, to celebrate claiming their body back, and to remind themselves and their partner of who this woman is. A nude portrait seems to be a popular present for a partner, for Christmas or birthday, particularly a 40th. However, most women are really doing it for themselves, a recognition and validation of themselves. Some commissions are of couples. Her favourite was a couple where she was contacted by the woman who said she was 55 and her partner 60, and she wanted a nude portrait of them together. Unfazed, but curious, Pamela booked them in for a sitting. They arrived, a lovely normal couple, the male partner having only been told what they were up to on their drive to London. ‘They were a delight’ Pamela says. ‘They related to each other in such a lovely way, I loved doing the work, and I loved the results.’ So did they. Bucket lists are a popular prompt. “ I am turning 50, and I am also going to wing walk!’. ‘I am turning 30, and it can only get worse from now on.’ ‘ I am 70 and I want to record my good legs.’ ‘ It’s my 40th wedding anniversary, and I’ve had a mastectomy’. ‘I am writing a novel.’

32 OCT/NOV 2019

“She says many ‘people have their children’s portraits done while they’re still angelic looking … before they start giving you grief!”

There is particular pleasure in drawing women who have been scarred by illness, or accident, who are looking for, and ready to accept this new body and its history. Pamela also does many portraits of children. She says many ‘people have their children’s portraits done while they’re still angelic looking … before they start giving you grief!’ She has been commissioned to do whole families of children as they reach the same age. Ideally, she says, ‘just before their knuckles pop!’. These are also commissioned as appreciated gifts for grandparents. Paintings of family groups are also a specialty. Money received from an inheritance is often used to commission a family portrait that will become an heirloom. Pamela obviously loves her work, but also teaches and exhibits more general paintings and drawings in national exhibitions such as The Society of Women Artists and The Discerning Eye. Although Pamela is based in West London, she has work in collections worldwide, and people come from all over the country to sit for her, even from as far afield as Montenegro! Little Country Cooks Never has there been a time when imaginative and creative play have been so important

R

ecent digital and tech advances have completely changed the patterns of our daily lives, leaving a potential void in the development of our children today. Many children spend more time in front of a screen than most parents are comfortable with, but prizing them away from the latest stream of animated entertainment is no easy task! The benefits of creative play are well documented, from improving problem solving and cognitive skills, to boosting self-expression and critical thinking, as well as creating new possibilities, negotiating, sharing and taking-turns. Social skills for life! A return to the more traditional ‘pretend-play’ and creative toys seems more than timely, however, while there are many creative toys available, not all are created equal. Many lose their novelty value quickly or are simply not well made and don’t last.

Master the Dark Arts this Hallowe’en Until Sunday 10th November 2019

D

arkness descends as Dark Arts returns – but beware, this time Death Eaters are at large! Fans of Death Eaters, daring duels and Hallowe’en feasts are invited to explore the darkness of the Wizarding World. The iconic Great Hall set is decorated with over 100 floating pumpkins, as seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Created by Head Propmaker on all the Harry Potter films, Pierre Bohanna, the pumpkins are hand-carved by the Prop Making Department so no two are alike. The Great Hall tables are laden with a Hallowe’en feast of red apples, pumpkins, and cauldrons of lollipops. Brush up on your wand moves in an exciting live duel with Death Eaters. Demonstrating how a crowd scene like the Battle of Hogwarts would have been created during filming, you will test out their defensive wand techniques as they are directed through a battle with Death Eaters. In addition to this, vats of slimy troll snot, buckets of dribbling drool (of the three-headed dog variety) and pools of silvery unicorn blood will be showcased in the Tour allowing you to get hands-on and see exactly how the slime and goo was created.

New for 2019 This year’s feature focusses on the loyal followers of the Dark Lord, the Death Eaters. From concept art to the finished props, members of the Harry Potter Art Department are on hand to demonstrate the pain-staking process behind the intricate Death Eater masks seen in the films. During production, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named’s followers each wore a unique mask that was designed and handetched to reflect their personality. HELP THEM REACH

TOP OF THE CLASS

Help children succeed at school by using simple techniques to boost learning, say the experts. WORDS: Lisa Salmon

I

f you want your child to get to the top of the class, it’s not nearly as simple as just encouraging them to work hard. Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential, and advanced learning expert Professor Deborah Eyre and education journalist Wendy Berliner, authors of the new book Great Minds and How to Grow Them, believe they know just what parents need to do.

Remember, IQ isn’t fixed. Eyre and Berliner explain the latest neurological and psychological research shows most children are capable of reaching the high levels of performance previously associated only with the gifted and talented. They stress that IQ and potential isn’t fixed - evidence shows it can be grown, and the key is

48 OCT/NOV 2019

developing the right learning attributes and attitudes Berliner says: “The vast majority of children could do really well at school, but unless parents play their part and help them learn the habits of high performance, they’re far less likely to get there.”

Parents can give kids a flying start. The pair have studied how top students learn, and how this learning can be replicated by virtually all children. “The home is at the heart of this learning revolution,” Berliner stresses. “Parents are a child’s first and longest serving teachers - give your children a flying start at school with proven ways to boost learning.

“Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to fulfil their academic potential”

Don’t say: You’ve been practising long enough now, do something else. Do say: You’re really good at that now, what’s the next step up?

Encourage curiosity Curiosity is at the heart of all learning and the link with high performance is compelling, so encourage questions and model it yourself. Your job is to answer your children’s questions initially and then later encourage them to find out the answers themselves. Don’t say: Stop asking so many questions. Do say: I wonder why ...?

Encourage critical or logical thinking The characteristic most associated with academic success is the ability to deduct, hypothesise, reason and seek evidence - Sherlock Holmes is your model for this. Don’t say: Why are you interested in that? Who cares? Do say: Why do you think that happened? How could you work it out?

“And keep things enjoyable - evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents.”

Getting kids to the top of the class. Here are Berliner and Eyre’s tips to help your child to fulfil their academic potential.

Encourage resilience Children who do well at school aren’t put off by failing- they keep trying until they get better. Your job when a child says they’re rubbish or can’t do something is to make them believe in themselves and keep going. Don’t say: Let me do it for you. Do say: I know it’s hard now, but you can do this if you keep trying.

“Evidence shows children who do well at school have warm relationships with their parents”

Encourage planning and monitoring Knowing how they’re doing - that they’re on track with their homework, for example - and knowing they need to put more effort into improving certain things, is very important to high performers. Don’t say: Just start somewhere and muddle along. Do say: How are you going to tackle this? Do you know you’re on track? How can you tell you’re doing it right?

Encourage open-mindedness Being open to new ideas is the hallmark of an advanced learner. Start with being open-minded yourself, and model what it’s like to be receptive to ideas that differ from your own. Don’t say: What a stupid idea. Do say: Isn’t that interesting? I never thought of that, but that’s such a good approach.

Encourage practice It’s the only way to get better. Make sure it’s regular, deliberate and planned practice, working towards achievable incremental goals, and your child practices what he/she can’t do until they can do it well. OCT/NOV 2019 49

ntroducing gus + beau, premium baby playmats in muted colours and simple patterns, designed to complement the modern home’s style and aesthetic. We’ve kept our design principles simple - clean lines, stylish patterns, and minimalist colours. My name is Liz Rawlinson and I am the founder of gus + beau. I have worked in ecommerce retail for over 10 years, working for incredible companies such as Liberty, L’Oréal, notonthehighstreet.com and Anya Hindmarch. After the birth of my second son, Gus, in 2017, I found myself looking for ways to create safe playing areas for him in our living spaces at home. I struggled to find beautiful playmats which would blend in with our interiors. I spotted a gap in the market; a premium playmat that was not only functional and safe, but complemented our home’s style and aesthetic. So, while on maternity leave, I decided to design and

“I struggled to find beautiful playmats which would blend in with our interiors” manufacture my own. After working in retail (and spending a lot of time on Instagram) I could see that parents wanted simple designs in muted tones and clean patterns when it came to playtime for their babies. My two greatest inspirations are my sons, Gus and Beau. In October 2016, our first son Beau was stillborn when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I was lucky enough to have Gus a year later in October 2017. This is for Gus, our rainbow baby, and Beau who is forever in our hearts. We launched in March 2019 with two patterns: Circle and Triangle, each coming in grey and white 50 OCT/NOV 2019

variations, with 4 playmats to choose from. In September 2019 we have expanded our range to include a brand new design: Multicolour Mini Cross Playmat, as well as adding new colours of pink and blue to our Triangle design. Each playmat set comes with 6 deluxe foam tiles, 60cm x 60cm and a plush 1.4cm thick, protecting little ones from bumps. Assembled mat size is 122cm x 180cm, similar to the size of a rug in a living space. You can purchase more than one set for larger spaces and the tiles will fit together seamlessly. REMEMBER, REMEMBER THE FIFTH OF NOVEMBER!

Keep your children safe this Guy Fawkes night

B

onfire Night as it is also known, can be magical for little ones, so advanced preparation and safety measures will ensure the evening is memorable for all the right reasons: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a properly organised display. But if you are planning fireworks at home; have an appropriately stocked first aid kit, a bucket of sand and plenty of water, a fire blanket and a bottle of sterile saline to irrigate eyes. Check the fireworks conform to British Standards and you have sufficient space to ignite them safely. However careful you are, injuries may occur so here are a few first aid tips you may need…

Sparklers Sparklers are fun, but burn fiercely and are not suitable for children under the age of five. Sparklers get six times as hot as a pan of cooking oil. Always

supervise children and ensure they wear gloves and maintain a distance from others. Have a bucket of sand to put used sparklers into and no one picks them up until they are completely cooled.

Minor burns Hold the affected area under cold, running water for at least 10 minutes. Cool the burn, but keep the person warm. If a child is burnt and a blistered area larger than a 50p piece, phone for an ambulance.

If clothing is on fire Prevent the casualty from panicking or running – any movement or breeze will fan the flames. Drop the casualty to the ground and wrap them in a blanket, coat, or rug made from inflammable fabric. Roll the casualty on the ground until the flames have been smothered.

Severe burns Start treating the burn immediately under cool running water for at least 10 minutes, until an ambulance arrives. Use a shower if the burns are large. Make the casualty as comfortable as possible, ideally lie them down and elevate their legs, to reduce the risk of clinical shock. Whilst cooling, remove loose clothing and jewellery from the affected area. If you are unsure of what to do in a medical emergency, enrol on a first aid course that will teach you how to deal with any injuries effectively and in the calmest way possible.

52 OCT/NOV 2019

Guy Fawkes Facts • The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard before the state opening, which has been held in November since 1928. The idea is to ensure no modern-day Guy Fawkes is hiding in the cellars with a bomb, although it is more ceremonial than serious. And they do it with lanterns. • The cellar that Fawkes tried to blow up no longer exists, in 1834 it was destroyed in a fire. • Straw dummies representing Fawkes have been tossed on the bonfire since as long ago as the 13th century, initially to drive away evil spirits. Following the Gunpowder Plot, the focus of the sacrifices switched to Guy Fawkes’ treason. • Today the word ‘guy’ is a synonym for ‘a man’ but originally it was a term for an “repulsive, ugly person” in reference to Fawkes. • The fireworks represent the explosives that were never used by the plotters. • The only place in the UK that does not celebrate Guy Fawkes Night is his former school St. Peter’s in York. They refuse to burn a guy out of respect for one of their own.

Taking children shopping can boost early development… especially at Christmas!

E

very woman loves to shop, but having children can hold you back from strolling round the boutiques and department stores of London looking for that next luxury item. Reminiscing of the days when you were free to spend bundles of cash followed by ‘ladies who lunch’ with your friends. Taking the kids shopping can conjure up nightmare thoughts of boredom, temper tantrums, and ‘can I have this Mum?’ over and over again.

54 OCT/NOV 2019

But have no fear, you can turn this around to your advantage… A new study by academics from Oxford and The Open University has found that shopping actually boosts infants’ happiness levels and the development of everyday skills. Researchers said there was evidence of a “positive” link between shopping and the physical skills that children need to master in the early years. The disclosure was made as part of a large-

scale analysis of parental activities and the impact they have on children. The study found that more passive activities such as watching television and looking through picture books had “no discernible benefits”. Children are getting visual stimulation, they’re getting out of the house and into a new environment, they’re bumping into other families where social skills come into play and they may get the chance to do something physical in a

shop like run around. There does seem to be a connection between the kinds of activities that are taking place and the skills that are being developed. But this doesn’t just happen by magic, even at Christmas… The key is to engage them when you are shopping, not dragging them behind you. In between you indulging in a fashion shopping frenzy, include some visits to stores that will capture their imagination and excite them. Hamley’s is top of the list with Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park - together with department stores that offer exciting window displays, kids workshops and activities. And as we approach the festive season, there are a huge amount of family activities that can encompass your shopping trip - like ice skating – Somerset House, Natural History Museum and Westfield will all have ice rinks open from November. Taking them to see Santa at one of the many department store Grotto’s will go down very well – Harrods, Selfridges and Hamley’s to name but a few, although you will need to book these in advance. Giving your children some time to enjoy themselves will make them just a little more patient when you want to splash the cash on yourself. Besides taking the kids Christmas shopping gives you a great chance to listen and observe them, compiling their ‘Christmas Wish List’ without them realising! So next time you have the perfect excuse to go shopping with your friends, and purchase your little ones Christmas presents – in between the boutiques, hair salon and spa of course! OCT/NOV 2019 55

A game changing gadget for bottle feeding parents E veryone who has tried bottle feeding a hungry baby knows the feeling. The frustration that builds up as you wait for the bottle to get ready with a crying baby in your arms. It was this frustration that gave a tired Danish engineer-dad the idea of inventing milkymeter™, a nifty little gadget that is a game changer for bottle feeding parents. With milkymeter you can warm baby’s bottle to the right temperature in the microwave without the risk of overheating or dangerous hotspots meaning you will save valuable minutes every time you need to feed your hungry baby.

“Milkymeter is a thermometer for use in the microwave” Milkymeter is a thermometer for use in the microwave. It is designed especially for milk bottles and has several temperature sensors that make it possible to accurately and safely measure temperature development in the microwave while 60 OCT/NOV 2019

warming. Milkymeter will flash a clear blue light to let you know it is working, flashing more raid when the right temperature is approaching. When milk is reaching body temperature, milkymeter will flash a strong green light, telling you to stop the microwave. All you then have to do is to stir milk with milkymeter, pop the teat on the bottle, test temperature as usual and serve the bottle to baby. In case you do not stop the micro and the milk overheats, milkymeter will flash a red warning light indicating the milk is too hot and must be cooled down before serving. Previously, the use of the microwave for warming up baby bottles has not been an option. Simply because the heating process is so fast that you risk overheating the milk which may burn your baby’s mouth and damage nutrients in the milk. With milkymeter, you now have a way of controlling the heating process. Using revolutionary Microweter Technology, milk, breastmilk or formula can now safely be warmed in a microwave, removing the risk of hot spots whilst preserving the vitamins and minerals found in breastmilk. New baby carrier for families on the go The Swedish family-owned company BabyBjörn announce the arrival of a new style baby carrier

B

abyBjörn is now launching Baby Carrier Move, which is designed for parents with an active, social lifestyle who want to take their baby with them from day one. The baby carrier has built-in back support and a waist belt that distributes weight away from the shoulders, as young babies grow heavier surprisingly quickly! Many babies love being carried in a baby carrier, and so their parents need to be able to babywear comfortably for long periods. The baby carrier’s thin and flexible 3D mesh fabric ensures that a newborn baby is sitting in a perfect position and the size of the baby carrier can be adjusted as the baby grows. The soft fabric hugs the baby’s back, legs and hips, and provides

62 OCT/NOV 2019

good support. For the first five months, the baby is carried facing inwards and then, as the baby and their interest in the world around them grows, parents have the option of carrying their baby facing outwards. The baby carrier is fully adjustable. Baby Carrier Move has a two-part design, making it easy to put on and take off – perfect if you want to lift out your baby quickly on a bus or in a crowded coffee shop. It also makes it simple to lift out a sleeping baby without waking them. Thirty million babies have been carried in a BabyBjörn Baby Carrier since the very first one – Close to Heart – was launched in 1973. The company, which was founded in 1961, continually develops and simplifies its baby carriers to be able to offer parents babywearing equipment that suits their family. It’s important that a baby carrier adapts easily to the baby’s size and the family’s lifestyle “We have tested Baby Carrier Move with a large number of test families in their home environments and on long walks over a long period in order to make sure that it’s comfortable for both parents and babies. My little son has taken an active role in product development and has been carried around in many prototypes,” says BabyBjörn’s Josefin Kleremo, project manager for Baby Carrier Move. The baby carrier is made of an airy 3D mesh fabric that breathes well and dries quickly after washing. The fabric has been specially developed for BabyBjörn’s baby carriers and meets the requirements of OEKO-TEX 100 Class 1 for safe textiles for babies and toddlers.

THE DETAILS Baby Carrier Move is available online and in stores from October 2019 in the colours Sage green, Grey and Anthracite. Recommended Retail Price: £119.99 Baby Carrier Move is acknowledged as hip-healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI). For more information visit www.babybjorn.co.uk

‘Why do babygrows have all these poppers?’ M y lovely hubby would ask me this all the time when we had our first baby boy. This got me thinking about the many times I was struggling to match poppers in the dark whilst trying to dress our newborn. I now have two very wriggly little boys who won’t keep still for a second, it’s like wrestling a lion getting them dressed after bath time. So with two busy little guys to deal with I need ZIPPYUP’s more than ever to make nappy and outfit changes quicker and easier. Just over a year ago I got to work on making ZIPPYUP a brand for all those parents like us, slightly tired, run ragged and doing the best we can...we’ll take any help that is offered...if it makes our life easier.

64 OCT/NOV 2019

Before I promoted myself to the position of Mummy, I learnt my trade working for a company that designed and made many of the clothes you’re probably wearing right now. So I have taken those many years of experience and knowledge and put them to good use by designing and making a babygrow that works well for both the wearer and the dresser. ZIPPYUP babygrows aren’t just well designed, they’re amazing value and made from good quality soft fabric, that’s because I personally source and work with the factories that are making ZIPPYUP designs to get the best possible prices and materials. The classic ZIPPYUP original babygrow is made from 100% super soft cotton fabric. The zips are concealed so they do not have contact with your baby’s skin and the tab at the neck ensures the zip puller doesn’t catch on any little chins. The long sleeves have turn back cuffs so you don’t need separate (often lost or odd) mittens and they are long enough for your baby to have lots of hand room. Colour combinations include unisex colours such as aqua with pale grey and traditional white with pale grey. For baby girls we have designed a pink and white stripe. New colour combinations of the classic one-piece ZIPPYUP babygrow are in the pipeline as well as new designs, I’ve taken inspiration from baseball style tees by pairing up interesting colours which look extra cute as babygrows, I look forward to sharing these with you very soon. www.zippyup.com

Eco-friendly Bamaboo Essentials

B

y the time you put your little one to bed tonight, 8 million more disposable nappies and 20 million more single use baby wipes will have been thrown into landfill today in the UK alone. Most of these are single use plastic. Polypropylene. Polyethylene. And they use tonnes of chlorine, alcohol, latex and PVC in their manufacture. Concerned by these terrifying facts, Mama Bamboo, a relative new player in the baby care market, have created a new range of Bamaboo Essentials eco-friendly nappies and wipes. Unlike other eco-nappies, these are made using sustainable bamboo and have a 100% compostable liner. They

are the first nappy brand to also be wrapped in a 100% compostable wrapper. And their wipes are 100% compostable bamboo fibre and wrapped in recycled materials. Most importantly Bamaboo nappies have a softer-than-cotton, breathable quality to them, a great fit and high absorbency, making them a true contender for the premium nappy market. The company have not sacrificed quality or performance at all. These are a nappy brand that ticks all the boxes. The company’s own philosophy is ‘Best for Baby, Best for Mama Earth, Best for Mama.’ Bamaboo wet wipes are equally impressive. Registered with the Vegan Society and containing over 98% water and plant-based ingredients. Independently tested to ensure they’re suitable for even delicate, newborn skin, they are hypoallergenic, naturally antibacterial and contain no harsh chemicals. Bamaboo nappies and wipes are available at Ocado, Amazon and from Mama Bamboo: www.mamabamboo.com

Keep them close with Nuna CUDL It’s Comfortable for You & Baby

F

rom the global baby gear brand that brought you the Nuna MIXX™, PIPA Lite lx™, the much love LEAF series rockers and more comes their latest clever creation the CUDL™ Baby Carrier. It’s ergonomically designed to grow with your baby from 3.5-16 kg, up to about 3 years old—whether using the integrated infant booster, front-facing or backpack mode. Here are a few reasons why new parents are loving the CUDL Baby Carrier.

The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) acknowledges the CUDL as a “hip-healthy” product when used as directed. The risk of hip dysplasia or dislocation is at it’s highest during the first few months of birth and can often go undetected until a child starts to walk. Knowing the CUDL is certified by the IHDI, will give peace of mind, knowing baby is properly supported. The mesh fabrics allow a cooling air flow while the attached UPF 50+ hood keeps baby protected from the elements. The magnetic locking buckles, padded shoulder straps and waist belt provide comfort for parents and care givers without placing unnecessary strain on the hip area.

Carrying Naturally

“CUDL makes it easy to keep baby close and secure all while leaving your hands free to get stuff done”

Parents Go Hands Free CUDL makes it easy to keep baby close and secure all while leaving your hands free to get stuff done, be it picking out that perfect melon at the market, getting a little work done on the computer or throwing in a load of laundry. The innovative magnetic buckles ensure an easy and secure attachment and allow you to put the carrier on individually, without the assistance of someone else.

It Offers Multiple Babywearing Positions During baby’s newborn phase, you can keep them facing in and snuggled up starting with an integrated infant booster, which then easily unzips as your child grows. The booster ensures that little one is in the optimal position keeping them safe and sound in the early months. As baby wants to explore the world, have them face out or switch to backpack mode for growing toddlers. 68 OCT/NOV 2019

The CUDL uses natural fabrics that are free from harmful substances. It is has been certified to Oeko- Tex standards, so you know the materials are better for baby. The included, accompanying GOTS certified cotton bibs are free from chemicals and protect and comfort baby, naturally. We talked to Claire Magee, MD of Nannycare, to find out more about their goat milk-based Follow on formula for babies. What is the ethos of the Nannycare brand? Our philosophy is to choose pure, whole goat milk which we believe is an excellent protein base in Follow on formula, retaining as far as possible the natural goodness and qualities in our goat milk, supplementing only as needed to meet regulatory requirements. Nannycare is simply made, minimising unnecessary ingredients which may put a burden on the infant’s metabolism. Our successful track record, combined with care and passion for our products, stretches back over 27 years in the UK. Is goat milk-based Follow on formula safe and approved? Following an extensive clinical trial with the Nannycare formulation and submissions to the European Food Safety Authority, we are proud to say that, since March 2014, goat milk formula is recognised under EU and UK legislation as a nutritionally equivalent alternative to cow’s milkbased formula**. This means that Nannycare Follow on can be used in the same way as its cow’s milk equivalent, is just as safe and suitable for your baby and has a mild and creamy taste that babies love. What’s the difference between cow’s milk and goat milk-based Follow on formulas? Nutritionally both formulas are equal, and parents can choose between either milk if they wish to move on from, or complement, breast feeding. In cases of a baby not settling on cow’s milk formula with minor feeding issues such as crying, colic or reflux, it may be worth trying a goat milk-based Follow on as an alternative, although you should always consult with your healthcare professional before switching. It is also important to note that a goat milk-based formula should not be given to infants with cow’s milk protein allergy, unless directed by a healthcare professional.

“Nutritionally both cow’s milk and goat milk-based Follow on formulas are equal, and parents can choose between either milk if they wish to move on from, or complement, breastfeeding”

Where can I buy Nannycare Follow on formula? Nannycare is now available in many branches of Boots and major supermarkets. We have a freephone Careline to help with any questions or to find a stockist in your area. Careline UK: 0800 328 5826 ROI: 1800 937 375 E: enquiry@nannycare.co.uk www.nannycare.co.uk Important notice: Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits for you and your baby. It is important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet in preparation for and during breastfeeding. Combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk. If for any reason you choose not to breastfeed, remember that such a decision can be difficult to reverse. Using infant formula also has social and financial implications which must be considered. Infant formula should always be prepared, used and stored as instructed on the label, in order to avoid risks to a baby’s health. **Directive 2006/141 (EC) and equivalent UK legislation

Guidelines on cervical screening are changing A

smear test (cervical screening) is when the health of the cervix (the opening to the womb from the vagina) is checked. A sample of cells is taken form the cervix to look for abnormal cell changes. Abnormal cell changes if left untreated can lead to cancerous cells, which can potentially lead to cervical cancer. Human Papilloma Virus or HPV is a group of viruses that infect the skin and cells lining the inside of the body. Some types of HPV can lead to cell changes in the cervix which can then lead to cancerous changes. The UK National Screening Committee has recently changed its guidance and now recommends that patients should receive a high risk HPV (HRHPV) screening before smear testing. At present, the sample is taken in the same way as a smear test. The changes have come about because a randomised controlled trial has shown that HRHPV is more sensitive than cytology (examination of cells under a microscope) at picking up potentially precancerous changes. So this is now thought to be better protection against cervical cancer.

76 OCT/NOV 2019

Once you’ve have had your screening test, if HPV is shown as negative, no further testing is needed at the time and your doctor will recommend when to have repeat screen. However, if HPV results come back positive (HPV is found), then cytology is performed on the sample to determine why the results are abnormal. If cytology is abnormal, the recommendation is that those patients will be referred for colposcopy. Colposcopy is when the cervix can be looked at in more detail and samples can be taken from any abnormal areas and treatment can then be given if necessary. These changes have come into effect in most private practices and in some areas of the NHS. HPV vaccine is currently offered to girls aged between 12 and 13 years on the NHS, and in now some areas the vaccine is also being offered to boys. If the vaccine is missed you can still speak to your doctor about getting a vaccine. To learn more about health screening, or to arrange a HPV test please contact the London General Practice on 020 7935 1000. www.thelondongeneralpractice.com

Headaches in children

Forget children giving you a headache, headaches in children is an increasing problem

H

eadaches don’t just affect adults. They are one of the most common neurological symptoms children and young people present to doctors - and can cause parents lots of worry. Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Neurology, Dr Nagi Barakat, explains what causes headaches and how best to treat them. Dr Barakat runs a headache clinic at Bupa Cromwell Hospital where he treats all kinds of headaches in children and young people.

So what are headaches? Headaches refer to pain involving the eye socket, forehead, scalp and temples but not the face or neck. There are two main types that can affect children; primary headaches, that are not the result of another condition, and secondary headaches, which are caused by another condition. Primary headaches include chronic or recurrent headaches and migraines. A migraine is the most common headache in children as well as adults. Chronic or recurrent headaches occur in 60-69% of children age 7 to 9, and in 75% by the age of 15. Up to 28% of older teenagers experience migraines regularly. Secondary headaches can be caused by a number of different conditions, the most serious of which is a brain tumour. This is very rare and only affects about 3 children in 100,000 per year.

How to treat headaches in children Treating children with headaches requires knowledge of the different types of headaches. A detailed history of symptoms and a clinical examination play a major role in getting the diagnosis right. Taking images of the structure of the nervous system - known as brain magnetic reasoning imaging (MRI) - is not always needed in primary headaches but is often needed in secondary headaches. The management of headaches is totally dependent on the diagnosis. Medications used in primary acute headaches include paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenic and triptans. If there is nausea or vomiting present, anti-sickness drugs can be used too. Chronic headaches that occur three to four times per month, including migraines, should be treated with prophylactic drugs, which guard against disease. These include propranolol, pizotifen, amitryptline, topiramate and others prescribed by a specialist. The length of treatment depends on how well the child responds and if no response is detected with a maximum dose, the diagnosis should be revisited. For migraines with or without aura (visual disturbances before the migraine itself), sumatriptan 78 OCT/NOV 2019

or zolmitriptan nasal spray is much better than oral medication, and can be used with ibuprofen or paracetamol. Anti-sickness drugs can be used with these as well.

Headache self-help tips You can help your child to reduce their headaches by making simple lifestyle changes. For example, incorporating more relaxation, regular sleep, healthy meals, plenty of fluids and exercise (when there is no headache present). If your child feels the early onset of a headache, encourage them to avoid using gadgets with screens, and relax in a quiet and dark place for 30-60 minutes. Avoiding the overuse of medication in chronic and tension headaches is important, as is avoiding the sudden stopping of headache medications.

Specialist support Accessing psychological help is also often recommended for recurrent and chronic headaches. Referral to a headache clinic can be done early, as part of a combined approach involving your GP and taking medication. Seeking guidance from a specialist at an early stage is key to reducing your anxieties and your child’s discomfort. Discovering the presence of a lump: what next?

D

iscovering the presence of a lump in your breast can be an extremely worrying time. Breast symptoms are very common and the majority of patients who attend the Breast Health Centre at King Edward VII’s Hospital have benign conditions (meaning they do not have breast cancer). However, although benign breast lumps are far more common than malignant ones (cancerous), breast cancer is still the most common cancer in women in the United Kingdom, with 1 in 8 women in England expected to develop the disease in her lifetime. Over 80 per cent of patients seen at the Breast Health Centre with a lump have a benign lump, but a full urgent triple assessment of any breast lump is highly recommended to rule out cancer. It is quite often that a cancerous lump may look or feel the same as a benign one, and only triple-assessment in a Rapid Access specialised breast clinic would make the diagnosis. Triple-assessment breast screening with a multi-disciplinary team on-site is considered the gold standard and includes rapid assessment by a leading breast consultant, breast imaging (mammogram &/or ultrasound) and cytology/ histology assessments all in the same place at the same time. Sue Milner is the Breast Service Manager at King Edward VII’s and explains the significance of having everything in one place: “We offer a one-stop clinic here at King Edward VII’s Hospital. This starts with a mammogram; if there is cause for concern an ultrasound will be performed.
