Welcome to our February issue...

I

t’s no wonder that a new cookery school opening in Radlett would be received with a great welcome. The many TV programmes and colour magazine articles which shower us with delicious food creations every day and the vibrant eating out scene have helped create a huge interest in baking and cookery of every description. The arrival of the Bartholdi Cookery School has inspired many people to take the opportunity to either enhance their cookery skills or take the first basic steps in learning how to cook good food. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has today awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal to Geraint John – a resident of St Albans – for outstanding service to the Olympic Movement. The medal was presented by Sir Craig Reedie, Vice-President of the IOC, at the Royal Institute of British Architects, London. Making the right choice of school for your child is a daunting prospect. With so many excellent independent secondary schools available, all displaying an impressive pedigree, it is easy to become overwhelmed when choosing the school that will be best for your child in terms of academic fulfilment and personal development. Peter Hamilton, Headmaster of Habs talks to our Corinne Sugar. Recently described by the Good Schools Guide as “a small but perfectly formed school “ and with a 140 year history, Lockers Park currently caters for boys from 5-13. The new, purpose designed Pre-Preparatory School for children from 4-6 will complement this with up to date facilities and dedicated staff, while drawing upon its traditional values.

Half Term Time Travel at

St Albans Cathedral

S

t Albans Cathedral is hosting a free, half term Family Discovery Morning on Thursday 19th February to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the current building’s completion and dedication back in 1115. This fascinating new trail for children has been specially developed to remember how the Norman Abbey would have looked 900 years ago. Young visitors will learn about how it was built, create their own model of the tower and have the chance to meet and dress up as historical characters. Steve Clarke, Education Officer at St Albans Cathedral, said, “This is a special anniversary year for St Albans Cathedral and we’re looking forward to travelling back in time with our younger visitors to find out how our ancestors created such a wonderful building. Be prepared to learn facts and information that they never teach you in school!” The Family Discovery Morning is free and there is no need to book. The trail and activities are suitable for children aged 3 to 11, and children need to be accompanied by an adult. The Cathedral will be celebrating this historic anniversary with ‘Dedication 900’ events throughout the year, including the installation of 7 new statues on the medieval screen in the Nave, a fascinating series of lectures and exhibitions and the annual Alban Pilgrimage attended this year by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the Archbishop of Rouen, Mgr Jean-Charles Descubes. The building of the present church began in 1077 by the first Norman abbot, Paul of Caen. It was the largest church in the land at the time, replacing an earlier Benedictine abbey founded by King Offa in 793. The second Norman abbot, Richard d’Albini, saw the construction through to completion and had the finished building dedicated in great splendour and in the presence of the King and Queen. That year the royal court was held in St Albans for Christmas and so the magnificent dedication ceremony happened on 28 December 1115. You can find out more about Dedication 900 and details on all St Albans Cathedral children’s events at www.stalbanscathedral.org or call 01727 890290.

Figuratively Speaking Gallery Rouge introduces the classical beauty of the human form through the disarming gaze of two twentieth century artists; the perfect antidote to the era of home technology

A

new generation of painters are claiming the figurative genre from the passages of history and appointing it with refreshing modernity. Too often classical is misplaced as old fashioned. Empowered by talent and obsessed with beauty, artists Talantbek Chekirov and Charlotte Greene have recently joined the ranks at Gallery Rouge and have quickly seduced collectors with soft strokes and lingering looks. As Francesca Gavin, curator of the Soho Few genres are better able to tell a story as well as figurative, by inviting our imagination to will the outcome of an intimate moment House Group observes, “As the classical education of the past becomes defunct, the visual references of the ruins of history are ripe for reinvention”. Indeed Chekirov and Greene have not abandoned the traditional devices of figurative portraiture; a

chaise longue is replaced by a comfortable arm chair, a flowing dress updated with a short shift. This is the new zeitgeist, firmly placing human attitudes in soft yet unwavering focus. Drama also hides beyond the edge of the canvas, waiting to enthral a captive audience in private silence. Few genres are better able to tell a story as well as figurative, by inviting our imagination to will the outcome of an intimate moment. Our gaze is Chekirov and Greenes reward for years of dedication to patient observation. Born in 1971 in the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Talantbek Chekirov’s works are extracts of his rich and broadly situated ideas concerning the ideal notion of beauty in painting infused by his knowledge of anatomy, graphics and composition. Chekirov approaches painting as an artisan, drawing on his background in theatrical painting and constructive art. This tactile proposition is refreshing; our homes are now cluttered with plastic screens and remote controls which beep and flash, disrupting the chance we may take to pause or relax.

in the selection of Charlotte Greene upholds his philosophy that fine and ornamental art is fundamental to the decorative scheme of the home. Undoubtedly a pivotal year for the future of figurative art Greene, born in Cumbria, also counts 1971 as the year of her birth. Encouraged as a child by her own artistic mother, Greene’s arrival as a professional painter was preceded by years of deliberate gradual development. Merging family commitments whilst augmenting and enhancing her natural ability, Greene fine-tuned the integration of domestic life with creative ambition. The artist acknowledges the complex and multi-faceted role of the contemporary woman; her heroines possess style as well as substance reflecting the hope to be intelligent, desirable, maternal and successful. With ever increasing demands on our homes to accommodate a multitude of shifting functions we feel pressure in defining decor; shelter, private restaurant, hotel and increasingly office space. All of this serves to demonstrate the growing trend for receding boundaries between form and function. To challenge this for so many now, walls are not just filled with colour or pattern but with purpose through the artwork they hold. As Chohan succinctly articulates, “collectors are engaging our services to assist in reclaiming their homes from technology, home working and the monotony of domestic chores. Our purpose is to help accomplish a beautiful and surprising environment in which to live, and figurative painting remains a vital offering from our portfolio.” Left: Charlotte Greene ‘Glamour II’ Original Oil 31x42 inches £1,695; Below: Talantbek Chekirov ‘Stay Here’ Original Oil 50x50 inches £1,695

I hear very often from our clients that art is personal and they won’t know the painting they are looking for until they see it Gallery Rouge owner Kuldip Chohan elaborates that living with art should sooth, enhance, enliven and reflect the mood of the home owner, “I hear very often from our clients that art is personal and they won’t know the painting they are looking for until they see it. I opened my galleries in St. Albans and Harpenden to provide comfortable yet neutral spaces in which to experience the power and quality of the artworks for the first time, but myself and the consultants never forget that we are merely temporary carers of the works before we help find them a permanent home”. he International Olympic Committee (IOC) has today awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal to Geraint John – a resident of Fishpool Road in St Albans – for outstanding service to the Olympic Movement. The medal was presented by Sir Craig Reedie, Vice-President of the IOC, at the Royal Institute of British Architects, London. The award makes Geraint John the first British recipient of this special decoration since the medal was inaugurated in 1997. Sir Craig Reedie said: “I am delighted to have presented this prestigious award to mark Geraint’s many years of outstanding service to the Olympic Movement. “The Pierre de Coubertin medal reflects the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship. Geraint has proved to be a great friend to the Olympic community, both in Britain and around the world, and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Olympic design. “The award of the Pierre de Coubertin medal is the richly-deserved recognition of a lifetime of service.” An architect by profession, Geraint has been recognised for a long and distinguished career in the design and provision of international sports facilities. THE BADA ANTIQUES & FINE ART FAIR 18th – 24th MARCH 2015 | Duke of York Square, off Sloane Square, Chelsea, London SW3

L

ong-regarded as the premier national fair, The BADA Antiques & Fine Art Fair, which takes place in the Duke of York Square, off Sloane Square, is the leading event for sourcing antiques and fine art of assured quality and authenticity. It is the only event on the international art calendar exclusive to members of the British Antique Dealers’ Association, and will see the display of a diverse range of important furniture, objet d’art and paintings. Ninety-eight of the most renowned art and antiques dealers from around the country, representing a variety of specialisms, have confirmed their attendance. Returning Exhibitors include leading dealers Godson & Coles, Harris Lindsay, Thomas Coulborn & Sons, Lennox Cato, Frank Partridge, Anthony Woodburn Ltd, Trinity House, The Taylor Gallery, Sandra Cronan Ltd., and Holly Johnson Antiques. New Exhibitors include Beaux Arts London, Philip Mould & Company, Michael Hughes, Peter Lipitch Ltd. and Ted Few. The exquisite range of jewellery brought by various dealers has always been a highlight at the BADA Fair, and this year is no exception. Amongst the offerings from Sandra Cronan Ltd. is an important pair of diamond ‘waterfall’ earrings dating from c. 1940, each featuring 8 pear cut diamonds, and smaller baguette cut diamonds. A further notable category is clocks, which are always well represented at the BADA Fair. Anthony Woodburn will bring a magnificent William and Mary turtle shell and gilt table clock dating from c.1695 as well as a remarkably preserved CharlesII walnut and marquetry longcase clock. There are several trends that have emerged amongst the items being submitted by the dealers for the upcoming BADA Fair. These include a rise of European furniture and objects designed in an Oriental style. Godson & Coles, specialist in 18th and 19thcentury furniture, as well as Modern British art, will bring a rare George I period, scarlet japanned bureau cabinet, signed by maker Daniel Massey, Frank Partridge will devote his entire stand to Chinoiserie items. Another prevalent style in furniture will be fine pieces in English Oak as seen on the stands of Wakelin & Linfield, Witney Antiques and Shaw Edwards Antiques. Yet again the fine art at the BADA Fair encompasses some wonderful British examples, ranging from 18th-

century watercolours, modern British sculpture and contemporary works. The BADA Fair has a long tradition of supporting charitable causes, and has raised over £3 million for a variety of charities over the years. This year the BADA Fair is delighted to announce The Haven Trust as its beneficiary. The Haven Trust is an award-winning breast cancer charity, offering support and complimentary therapy to patients. The BADA Fair will host a Charity Gala Dinner for The Haven Trust on the evening of Thursday 19th March in the Cellini Restaurant, within the BADA Fair. Following the success of the catering at last year’s BADA Fair, the upcoming edition will see the return of celebrated caterers Absolute Taste running both the Cellini restaurant and Duke of York Brasserie. CHOOSING THE PERFECT

PLAYHOUSE

FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES – AND YOU! is entirely up to you – and your child! You can paint the interior walls in any colour you choose, from pale blue to bright red. You could even wall paper the inside of your playhouse for that real cosy, lived in feeling. Depending on what your child, children or grandchildren plan to use the playhouse for will determine how you furnish it – it may be a castle with a princess hiding in the highest room in the tallest tower, a cowboy saloon, or somewhere to do their homework. Adding a comfy sofa or chairs will really bring the house to life, whilst a practical desk will provide ample space to study. You could even include a bed for those summer sleep overs! With a little help from The Playhouse Company you can create the perfect playhouse that will take your child all the way from their toddler days to their teenage years.

One of its aims is to create a house that can be used for as long as possible, even becoming a “teenage hideaway”

C

hoosing a play or tree house for your children or grandchildren can be overwhelming. What size and style is best for your little ones? How will it fit into your garden and will it complement its existing design? A playhouse can also be a significant investment, so ensuring it is the right one, and is built to last, is imperative. The Playhouse Company, a designer and builder of beautiful wooden play and tree houses, has vast experience in bringing playhouse dreams to life. The process begins with your initial idea. The Playhouse Company then uses this vision, taking into consideration the age of the children and the layout of the garden (which is either through a photograph or a site visit), to create a design. Designs are then translated from sketches into a beautiful detailed structure. One of its aims is to create a house that can be used for as long as possible, even becoming a “teenage hideaway” in later years or incorporating garden storage making it a dual purpose playhouse. The Playhouse Company can work with all types of gardens & any size, including those with uneven surfaces in which case it creates a sub base. It has also been asked on many occasions to incorporate existing features into the design, for example building a house around an ancient tree, along an old wall, or in a compact corner. It is the company’s bespoke service that allows you to create the perfect house for your garden as well as for your children. Capel Manor College has new courses in floristry, garden design and horticulture starting in April, and all specialisms launch new courses every September. If your resolution for 2015 is to learn something new or perhaps to find inspiration for a career change, Capel Manor College can open doors to fresh horizons.

uring the dark days of winter, a career in the great outdoors may be furthest from your mind. But as spring approaches, your thoughts may turn to such inspirational events as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (19-23 May), the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show (30 June to 5 July) and country shows such as the Hertfordshire County Show (23-24 May) showcasing a wide range of land-based skills and businesses. So if you get the land-based bug, where can you go to realise your dream? “Capel Manor College is full of inspiration, and finding out how well its students do at shows and competitions sold the course to me. I knew that that was what I wanted to do one day.” So says Sarah Jarman, RHS Chelsea Flower Show Fresh Talent winner and recipient of an honours award from the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. Miss Jarman is currently in the second year of her Level 3 Diploma in Garden Design at the College and has set up her own garden design company. A group of Capel’s Level 3 Garden Design students and Level 3 Landscaping students are currently working on a show garden which will be open to the public at the Ideal Home Show in Olympia in late March. The garden, entitled The Shower of Life, is one of the entries selected for the Young Gardener of the Year competition this year. Capel offers a wide range of opportunities for success at a national level while studying.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SCHOOL PETER HAMILTON, HEADMASTER OF HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S BOYS’ SCHOOL Making the right choice of school for your child is a daunting prospect. With so many excellent independent secondary schools available, all displaying an impressive pedigree, it is easy to become overwhelmed when choosing the school that will be best for your child in terms of academic fulfilment and personal development

B

y now you will have visited numerous open days, acquired packs of prospectuses and met multitudes of inspirational children and teachers. Further, you will be facing the fact that most independent schools have small class sizes, exceptional exam results, motivated staff, an extensive range of extracurricular activities, a cabinet full of trophies, and more! So, how do you best make an informed decision? Primarily, choosing a school is about choosing an academic ethos that will enable your child to succeed, not just in their exams, but in their lives after education. Most schools supply an information book alongside their prospectus and this should explain the how each curricular subject is taught and what exactly is on offer. Some schools expect pupils to drive their own learning; others may have a more creative, or project focused, approach. Some schools will offer little or no flexibility when selecting examination subjects; others may afford students a variety of choices. Knowing your child’s areas of strength, you should be looking to choose an approach that will engage them and

8 FEBRUARY 2015

encourage them to learn throughout their life. A child’s schooldays, however, are not merely about absorbing knowledge or acquiring grades. Ensuring that the school has the correct type of pastoral support and care for your child is paramount to their success and happiness. For example, how are classes set? Ability setting may be too competitive for some; geographical location ensures classmates are close to each other both inside and outside of school, better encouraging the kind of lifelong friendship that schools inspire. Additionally, how pupils are supported through exams – planning, revision strategies, stress management – and the UCAS process, should form part of your decisionmaking. At 11, this may seem early, but it is certainly not premature. Before you know it, you’ll be watching them receive their exam results and waving them off to University. In the case of Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, we admit the brightest boys, and at every stage of their development our curriculum is expressly designed to keep them involved, stimulated and eager to learn. We are known for our academic excellence and the vast majority of our students go on to their first choice university, with exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge. We produce confident and self-motivated young men who are fully prepared for the challenges of the future. We have a strong and supportive multicultural community at our core. Students make friends across the most extraordinary range of backgrounds and cultures, and our community stands as a beacon of tolerance and respect. The right school will share the values and aspirations that you have for your child. It will have demonstrated how it nurtures pupils, how it gets the best from them inside and outside the classroom, and it will already have struck a chord with your family. I wish you the best of luck in making your decisions. Show your metal F rom platinum peepers (at Narciso Rodriguez) to copper-lined eyes (Holly Fulton’s deco darlings) and frosty pink lips at Rodarte, practically every metal in the periodic table was ticked off at the AW14 fashion shows. By Katie Wright, Press Association. And with such a huge elemental spectrum, this is a trend that everyone can try - you just need to select your shimmering shade and where to apply it. Whether you’re after glimmering skin, glistening lips or a mercurial manicure, we’ve got all the expert advice you need to perfect your metallic makeover - just in time for party season.

GET GLOWING

Applying swatches of gold leaf directly onto your forehead - as seen at the Simone Rocha shows - may be a step too far, but a subtle golden sheen suits all skin types. “The best way to achieve this look on the skin is to first apply bareMinerals Prime Time Brightening Foundation Primer,” says international make-up artist Sarah-Jane Froom. “Smooth one pump all over the complexion after moisturiser and follow with foundation as normal. “To get more of a glow, buff bareMinerals Illuminating Mineral Veil over the face; this will give luscious layers of light to the skin, then follow with a highlighter on the top of the cheekbones.” bareMinerals Prime Time Brightening Foundation Primer, £21 (www.bareminerals.co.uk); Burberry Limited Edition Gold Glow Luminising Powder, £45 (www. burberry.com)

MIDAS EYES

“Gold is very complementary to hazel,

brown and blue eyes. The iridescent undertones help to enhance and warm the eyes with a pop of colour,” says Rebecca Restrepo, Elizabeth Arden global makeup artist.“Pale golds are subtle but have real impact. You can wash the colour all over the eyelid, then finish off with curled eyelashes and a few coats of mascara,” advises Florrie White, Clinique’s UK colour artist. “For a more intense look, I would start with a gold cream base, blend up and out and then apply powder shadow on the centre of the eyelid for depth and intensity. Finish with a dab of gold pigment on the centre of the eye for a mesmerising effect.” MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow Duo in Dual Rays, £17 (www.maccosmetics. co.uk); B. Stunning Vibrant Eye Shimmer in Golden Sand, £6.99 (www. superdrug.com)

GALACTIC GAZE

If you’re a fan of the smoky-eye style, switch your usual stormy shades in favour of a moody metal hue. “My favourite is the Massive Midnight Chubby Stick, it’s like liquid moonlight,” says White. “Apply it along the lash line, blend up and out, then repeat along the lower lash line. You can intensify the look with a darker eyeliner too.” A fine slick of eyeliner with a galactic gleam offers a more lightweight option, and you can play with blues and greens to suit your eye colour. “Compliment the colour on the eye with black mascara to really give the eye some intensity,” says White. Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint For Eyes in Massive Midnight, £17 (www.clinique.co.uk); Stila Magnificent Metals Eye Liner in Metallic Vintage Gunmetal, £24 (www.stila.co.uk)

There’s more than a nod to Jo Malone in the sophisticated styling of this product, with its sleek bottle and black ribbon finish, so it would look great on any dressing table. Using a gold shade of lip gloss, rather than a lipstick, is an easy way to rock the gold trend

“Using a gold shade of lip gloss, rather than a lipstick, is an easy way to rock the gold trend whatever your age,” says Restrepo. “You can also layer it on top of other lip colors to give them a more golden alluring finish - always great for the festive season.” For something a little more daring, try a pink or red ombre lip, where the shimmering colour fades from the centre. Froom explains how: “Start with a lip liner, fill in the whole lip, then follow with bareMinerals Moxie Lipgloss. Finally, dab a loose metallic eyeshadow into the centre of the lip for a frosted finish.” Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Luminous Lip Gloss in Glamorous Gold, £17 (www.houseoffraser. co.uk); bareMinerals Marvellous Moxie Lipgloss in Hypnotist, £16 (www.boots.com)

“Tweaked” not “Tucked”

is the new UK trend in Cosmetic Surgery

T

here is a softer, gentler approach to cosmetic surgery in the UK right now with a desire for more natural, understated anti-ageing treatments rather than the more extreme procedures that soared in popularity post recession and during the cosmetic surgery boom. Men and women no longer want to look different, they just want to look refreshed. According to the latest statistics from BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons), natural and refreshed is the aesthetic ideal at present amongst us Brits. The figures reveal that subtle, anti-ageing procedures such as eyelid surgery, face lifts and fat transfer are as strong as ever in the UK, yet extreme procedures such as tummy tucks and nose jobs have taken a dive. Surgical liposuction amongst women saw a +10% rise last year. Breast augmentations were down –20% yet breast reductions were up +3%. The trend is now for a refreshed or youthful appearance rather than more conspicuous

Men and women no longer want to look different, they just want to look refreshed alterations. Brow lifts were also down –5% giving way to a more natural looking face. This year’s trends are in contrast to double-digit increases in the more extreme procedures last year when post austerity, there was a sudden giant surge in severe cosmetic treatments particularly for Glamour model style boob jobs. Now, the natural, less-is-more look is definitely on the rise as patients opt to be tweaked rather than tucked. Riverbanks Clinic has always been a ‘natural, less-ismore’ ambassador. In fact Dr Jain has recently devised a whole new consultation method based around this ethos. The Harmony programme encompasses everything that the UK trend is reflecting. No severe cosmetic facial changes, but a soft and gentle approach to refresh and restore the natural contours of a face that may have slipped somewhat over time. Not a quick in and out consultation with a generic repertoire of treatments. This is a complete consultation process between doctor and patient taking into account their skin type, lifestyle and psychological profile before deciding on a treatment plan. Dr Jain, founder of Riverbanks Clinic explains, ‘the key to the Harmony programme is that it is for people who don’t want to look different, they just want to look how they feel. It’s about natural looking tweaks and adjustments that restore facial balance and enhance the appearance rather than altering it.’ ‘Many of our patients have been with us for seven years but they look younger today than they did when they first started. That’s because they have invested in 54 FEBRUARY 2015

subtle skin maintenance plans which discreetly treat the signs of ageing so after each treatment they look that little bit fresher and after a while it adds up to significant improvements.’ Dr Jain is now teaching this method globally. Dr Jain is also recognised for his new R-lift, a nonsurgical facelift. Rather than going under the knife for severe cosmetic surgery, cleverly placed fillers are used to restore the natural scaffolding of a face while lifting and sculpting. Carefully controlled amounts of Emervel or Restylane are injected into as few as two points on either side of the face: cheekbones (to smooth sunken sockets and hollow temples) and the corners of the mouth (to sharpen jaw lines and iron out lines around the lips). The difference between Dr Jain’s R-Lift and ordinary fillers is the technique. A cannula is run beneath the skin’s surface, helping to break the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and fade deep wrinkles. Dr Jain’s R-Lift is featured in this year’s Tatler Beauty and Cosmetic Guide where Riverbanks Clinic has featured for the last 3 years. Dr Jain and the Riverbanks Clinic team welcome this new trend for a more thoughtful and cautious approach to cosmetic surgery.

Step into 2015 in great shape with these 7 easy habit changes “N

ew Year, new you” . We hear it every year. But what does it mean to you? The coaches at Bodyscope’s premier facility in St Albans and Hertfordshire show us how next year’s new us can be about much more than getting our bodies in shape. Kenneth Vernall, who heads up Bodyscope’s international team of fitness, nutrition and lifestyle coaches, told us that their most successful clients have worked on mind, body, stress and sleep for lasting lifestyle change. If that sounds like an overwhelming amount to do, relax. Ken showed us 7 small, easy tips to step into 2015 in great physical and emotional shape. These steps (some of which might surprise you!) will certainly improve your fitness, but also tackle habits, mindset and limiting beliefs to transform your life from all angles.

your body, because your cells and hormones understand how to use them. There’s no need to cut out packaged, manmade items completely. But shift towards real, natural, one-ingredient foods and you’ll see huge changes in fat loss, minor illness, stress and sleep.”

1. The hour of power

6. Know when (and how) to relax

“We encourage clients to make the most of the first part of every day,” said Ken. “Carve out the start of the morning for you, and write a page in a journal, get outside for a short walk, organise your to-do list, or tackle a large work or domestic chore. It doesn’t have to be an hour, but this incredible lifestyle change will become an empowering habit.”

2. Drink more water

“Most people already know they should be drinking more water,” said Ken, “but lots of busy people struggle. Here are some tips we give BodyScope clients: drink a glass of water in the morning, keep a bottle with you (in the car, in your bag, at your desk), drink water during dead times in the day (waiting in traffic, waiting for the kids, preparing food), and finish your day with a herbal tea.”

3. Know what you’re eating

According to Ken, most people struggle to lose or control bodyfat levels not because they’re overeating, but because they’ve lost track. “Food should be enjoyed,” he said, “but if your goal is weight loss or body composition changes, you need to be aware of portion sizes, meal frequency, and the quality of your food. Don’t skip meals or under eat.”

4. keep it natural

A healthy body is a happy body, Ken told us. “We encourage our clients to slowly make wiser nutritional choices. Real foods close to their natural state are best for 62 FEBRUARY 2015

5. Exercise smarter, not harder

You might expect a team of Personal Trainers to preach plenty of hardcore exercise. Not necessarily, said Ken. “The fitness industry is slowly waking up to something we’ve known for a while: shorter, more intense exercise sessions are more beneficial than long periods of one-pace cardiovascular exercise. So why not exchange the treadmill for interval training? It will get you in better shape more quickly, and it’ll save you time, too! Who has hours to spend in the gym these days?”

Bodyscope coaches get clients in shape from the inside out. Which is why Ken and his team are very keen on educating people on the power of slowing down. “We call it knowing when to take your foot off the gas,” he explained. “Most people are go-getters, trying to do the best they can in business, with their family, in their hobbies and social life. That’s great, but it’s important to listen to your body’s signals and know when to back off. Find your own version of meditation: walk outside in nature, or sit comfortably at home with lights and sounds turned off, simply tuning in to your body and thoughts.”

7. Be consistent

Ken’s ultimate tip for a healthier, happier 2015 is to be consistent. “It’s not the one or two massive changes which will make a difference,” he explained. “We see the most success from people who implement smaller changes (perhaps one habit change a fortnight) and stay consistent. Make health, stress reduction, good nutrition and better sleep part of your lifestyle and you will benefit from a patient approach. Imagine where you’ll be this time next year!” THE DETAILS 020 3151 4005 info@bodyscope.co.uk ••••• www.bodyscope.co.uk

FRESH IDEAS J

ohn Ladbury and Company is starting 2015 with fresh, new ideas for our showroom in Welham Green, starting with a refurbishment of two of our displays. We have recently embraced new designs and appliances and incorporated a media centre into one of our displays as increasingly we are being asked to design furniture to complement the ‘live in’ kitchen of today. Housing a television, music centre, computer and any necessary peripherals and storage, our media centres are fast becoming a core requirement rather than an add on, demonstrating that today’s kitchen is all about family living, complementing the home and enhancing the look. John Ladbury and Company kitchen’s integrate seamlessly with the hectic pace of today; lives that are complex, busy and individual. The modern kitchen is often the hub of the house, with a range of appliances needed to cater for all diets, age groups and life-styles.

Our media centres are fast becoming a core requirement rather than an add on, demonstrating that today’s kitchen is all about family living John Ladbury and Company bear this in mind when designing a kitchen, discussing with the client their lifestyle and how it reflects their needs and their long-term requirements. We advise accordingly, recognising that each kitchen needs to be individually designed and tailored to fit each person. Design, quality, and attention to detail are our guarantee that a John Ladbury and Company kitchen will be beautiful, practical and durable, and an asset to your home. 70 FEBRUARY 2015

Why not join the Conservatory Party? A ccording to Wikipedia “a manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.” If and when replacing a conservatory with a modern thermally efficient double glazed one, or adding new

74 FEBRUARY 2015

glass extensions like conservatories and orangeries, the manifesto in such circumstances is clearly going to be more tailored to one or two individuals tastes, needs and requirements, plus probably the quality of living these individuals want for their family, friends and visitors. Consequently to ensure any new or replacement conservatory adds valuable high quality living space that is usable 24/7 to your home, here is a brief summary of the Conservatory Party’s manifesto to ensure you get what you expect, and don’t end up with an empty room with an unpleasant living environment:• No conservatory to be too hot in summer and/or too cold in winter • All conservatories must be leak proof, plus as draught proof as possible • All conservatories need to be double glazed with high performing Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacer bars and soft coat heat retentive glass to prevent too much heat loss or too much solar gain • Any glass extension to be designed bespoke to your property, so that it looks part of the initial build and not an after-thought. • Important that bricks (or render) not only match, but so do the brick courses or render painted same colour as existing dwelling

• Be sure of the quality of workmanship and product by visiting reference sites and the installers showroom before placing any order • The glass used in any conservatory must all be toughened safety glass and have a high specification, and when conservatories are south facing, the exterior glass to a have a heat reflective coating • The concrete floor to contain 65mm-100mm deep proven floor insulation such as Celotex or Jabolite • Wherever possible all conservatory roofs to be double glazed with thermally efficient glass and not have noisy and ugly looking polycarbonate • Any side or dwarf walls will conform to current building regulations for extensions and have thermally efficient cavity wall insulation • Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period that is worth the paper it is written on (so before joining the Conservatory Party it is important to make sure your installer is well established, trustworthy and has a proven reputation for build quality and fulfilling warranties)

exterior doors between the existing property and the new conservatory. Such structures must be under 30 square metres, and not project more than 4m on detached houses and no more than 3m on semi-detached houses. These glass extensions must have walls that are at least 50% double glazed and translucent roof of 70% or more. Find out about the planning rules and Building Regulations before ordering a new conservatory Consequently, if you do decide to join “the Conservatory Party” and benefit from the extra high quality living space a conservatory affords, make sure that your conservatory supplier and installer can and will fulfil every one of the above Conservatory Party manifesto pledges.

Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period • All new conservatories must have sufficient ventilation i.e. have enough opening vents on the upright parts, and at least one double glazed roof vent (Larger conservatories will need more than one roof vent) • Conservatories must have enough independent heating so that they are warm and comfortable throughout all winters and on cold summer evenings • Ensure the ground workers, double glazing fitters, plumbers, bricklayers, plasterers are experienced and that the electrician is fully qualified and accredited • All new conservatories being built under permitted development (i.e. without planning permission or Building Regulation Approval) must have compliant

Are you sitting comfortably? M

any of us do not consider the health implications of the furniture we regularly use. David Holloway of FineBack Furniture in London Colney gives advice on how to avoid musculo-skeletal problems It goes without saying that parents make sure their children get the right shoe size as they grow. Similarly, the furniture a child uses to do homework, read, draw and generally be creative, should be ergonomic, appropriate and comfortable. Height adjustable desks for children are recognised as an essential component in encouraging good posture and protecting the back from an early age. As the child grows, a simple mechanism raises the desktop height to a more comfortable level. A tilting desktop provides an inclined slope for reading, drawing and painting and discourages the child from leaning forward over their work and losing back support. Electric height adjustable desks for adults are commonly referred to as Sit - Stand desks as they encourage the user to work in both a sitting and standing position. Sitting in an office chair, even a good ergonomic chair for long periods can limit the activity and freedom of movement of the individual. The human body does not operate efficiently when its movement becomes restricted and back pain sufferers are often told to keep active and vary their sitting position.

Varying the height of a sit stand desk throughout the day, provides an alternative to the static sitting posture. Back and leg muscles remain active, circulation is improved and joints keep flexible. A standing position also reduces the downward pressure from gravity on the spinal discs compared to normal sitting. Regular users of height adjustable desks have also recorded an improvement in alertness, vitality and concentration. Very few adults have been educated on how to sit correctly and consequently bad working practices become habitual and result in a back problem later in life. To achieve a healthy sitting position, an ergonomic office chair should be adjusted in seat height, seat depth and back height to conform to the users dimensions.

Choosing en ergonomic office chair that allows movement is ideal, so that back support adjusts to your working position even when leaning forward over the desk. Armrest height should be adjusted to keep your shoulders in a comfortable, balanced position to reduce tension arising in the upper body. Correct chair adjustment and alignment at the workstation are equally important in the avoidance of back pain at work. FineBack Furniture can assist with chair selection, even providing a loan chair for a short period to ensure that the user will be comfortable for the long term. op-performing, Home Care Company – Helping Hands had further cause for celebration recently. In addition to reaching its 25th Year Anniversary in May, privately owned care company Helping Hands achieved a top ranking in the Health Investor Growth Company Awards 2014 as the second highest performing Healthcare business in the country. This award recognises the UK’s top 25 independent healthcare companies based on their growth over the last 3 years. Tim Lee, the Chief Executive of Helping Hands, a leading local Domiciliary Home Care and specialist Live In Home Care provider said: “ As the population in Britain gets older we regularly see research which confirms that most people would like to remain independent, living in their own homes, for as long as possible. The recent growth achieved by Helping Hands’ is a result of our passion and desire to provide services which enable as many people as possible to maintain their independence and stay living safely in their own homes, rather than go into residential care. “ As a respected, local employer Helping Hands has over

They are able to support local people who require support at home through assisting with Daily Living, helping at mealtimes or with medication, providing companionship or through a Home from Hospital service which enables people to safely return home from hospital and free up much needed hospital beds at this busy time of year. Commenting on the award, Matthew Flower, Head of Healthcare at Zolfo Cooper said “Given the strong reputation developed over the last 25 years, it is not surprising to see the business near the top of this year’s list yet again.” THE DETAILS If you would like to find out more about the services that Helping Hands can offer you or a loved one, please call us on 0808 180 1016 or visit our website: www.helpinghands.co.uk

A New Design Studio

Tomas Kitchen Living offer a personal and professional service from design through to installation

T

omas Kitchen Living has recently opened a small, but exceptionally stylish Design Studio in Catherine Street, St Albans. The look is ‘Modern Classic’ - a very interesting look that sits stylishly between contemporary and traditional. Tom Hinton, the brand founder and designer explains that “ I love to prove that a modern look does have soul” ! The colours, the shapes and the oak features all combine to create kitchens that are distinctive and have great character, with all the practical and functional benefits of modern kitchens.

liveDESIGN

Tomas Kitchen Living offer a personal and professional service from design through to installation. The process usually begins with a visit to the studio (ideally by appointment if you’d like to meet Tom). Here you can see first-hand the products and the excellent quality. Following this either a survey will be arranged or plans are passed over and an ‘empty space’ drawing is prepared for your next visit. This time you’ll be working directly with Tom in what Tomas call a liveDESIGN session. ‘This is a great way to achieve the optimum design for our client’s requirements and space’ explains Tom. After the brain-storming is over, and when the client is clear they wish to progress, the team create a ‘proposal’ which consists of an itemised estimate and a set of three dimensional drawings. This is currently a free service, and as much about building an understanding of lifestyle and kitchen requirements which all lead to a better design. Budgets are always discussed at the outset and 82 FEBRUARY 2015

many people are delighted to discover that Tomas kitchens including cabinets, appliances and tops usually cost between 25k and 32K. This is exceptionally good value for money when one considers the quality of the designer product and individual service.

The Danish Connection

In addition to the Tomas brand, the Tomas Kitchen Living studios specialise in Danish Designer furniture and lighting such as iconic Carl Hansen & Son, Louis Poulsen, Republic of Fritz Hansen and Gubi. Many beautiful pieces are on display in the St Albans studio as well as in Cambridge where Tom Hinton first started out.

THE STRUM TABLES and MODBOX CREATIONS - ORIGINAL DESIGNS BY TOMAS

To complement the kitchen collection, Tomas produce the fantastic STRUM TABLES (plectrum shaped coffee tables) and MODBOXES (modular box shelves that work as stand-alone pieces of furniture or as an integral part of the kitchen). Bigger, the Better

The

W

e at Herts Bifold Doors and G&N Windows, pride ourselves on being able to take on an array of contracts from domestic to commercial with a commitment that no project is too big or too small. Recently we have installed our largest roof light to date, and the outcome has been spectacular.

Our most recent large roof light to cover a pool enclosure was a massive 15 m by 5m. With the assistance of a glazing specific spider crane our installation went smoothly and safely Roof lights are one of our most popular products, from small fixed flat roof lights to opening flat roof lights and larger roof lanterns, we are able to source the perfect roof light for your home. We have been in partnership with the same Architectural roof manufacturers for over 20 years. Over time we have developed a personal relationship allowing us to receive added benefits which we are able to pass on to our customers making our roofs competitively priced without compromise on quality or design. Our most recent large roof light to cover a pool enclosure was a massive 15 m by 5m. With the assistance of a glazing specific spider crane our installation went smoothly and safely, with all structural sections being installed from a purpose designed working platform, each glass unit was lifted up carefully into place being guided by our team of installers. Alongside this large roof lantern, the project involved a number of other products. The entire house required new UPVC vertical sliders, these carry all of the original detailing and operation you get from a timber vertical slider with added extras in the locking, the ability to tilt them inside for easy cleaning and a superior thermal value. This particular project also had traditional composite 86 FEBRUARY 2015

doors and three sets of Origin bi-fold doors. These Origin doors, available in 100’s of colours are a perfect match for any windows, their 20 year guarantee, finger safe gaskets and high specification security locking features make them one of the most popular doors on the market. Our 25 years of experience, in house technical knowledge and expertise within the industry allowed us to seamlessly manage this project from start to finish. There are a lot of different variables to consider when planning a project, collating the products from different manufactures to arrive at the same time, fitting dates with installers, collaborations with onsite contractors and cranes to organise, we take this all on board and liaise directly with your client/ architect/ main contractor to provide you with the best service possible. If you have a project in the future we would be happy to provide you with a free quotation. Ring our office or email your plans to us and we will have your complete quote in no time at all.

These sales were achieved by us, through our offices based in Hampstead Garden Suburb & Mill Hill, with purchasers who had no preconceived idea of living in these areas, as they were encouraged by our marketing strategy. We have been selling & renting prestigious properties for nearly 25 years and specialise in bespoke marketing - the kind of marketing you can rarely achieve from your local estate agent. We deal with a mix of local buyers, to buyers from the world of sports and television, captains of industry & international buyers from all over the world. If you are thinking of selling or renting your home in Mill Hill, Shenley, Radlett, Elstree, Totteridge, Hampstead Garden Suburb or Finchley & want a refreshingly different approach, please talk to us. The world really is a very small place indeed!

We don’t do different things. We do things differently. HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB OFFICE 20 Market Place, London NW11 6JJ T +44 (0) 20 8458 9119
