our home is your haven and as we look towards an upbeat 2015, attention turns to refreshing certain aspects of your décor which may be feeling a little jaded. The interior design trends which will lead us through the next twelve months are already established; Elle Decoration note that unexpected pastel accents are now frequently chosen to soften spaces, emboldened with pops of pattern and humour through soft furnishing and fine art choices. Working with the architecture and period of your home, key moments can be created through the fusion of eclectic texture and colour. Gallery Rouge make it their business to keep up to date with design inspirations, to ensure that they are constantly identifying cutting edge art that brings the best out of your home. With this is mind, this February witnesses a month long celebration of four inspiring British artists; showcasing playful works with timeless values at their heart, collectors will be reminded just how great the impact art has on the atmosphere of
their living spaces. Create your home to project a positive tone, distilling your passions and aspirations which you long to return back to at the end of the day. It is time to re-discover your love of art, and the journey starts here.

Placed deftly between fiction and fantasy, Kerry Darlington’s epic interpretations of beloved fairy tales have won passion and enthusiasm from collectors globally. Pictured is the gentle ‘Snow White and Rose Red’, an ode to the Brothers Grimm story in which a dwarf and a bear battle for good and evil in the depths of the enchanted forest. David Renshaw
It is impossible not to be charmed by the sincerity of David Renshaw’s Northern Romance collection. Resonating in both hearts and minds, collectors have avidly watched the narrative between protagonists

Dale Bowen
Brimming with optimism, quirk and a pinch of cheek, the affable works of Dale Bowen invite adventure in far-away lands. An early career as a potter has left the artist with an inspired sense of the three-dimension, which is evident in the charismatic curved balloons which idly drift across the skies. The joy with which he paints is evident in each and every one of his creations, and is equalled only by those fortunate enough to own them. PRIME STEAK & GRILL P
rime Steak & Grill is the latest edition to the St Albans dining scene and is definitely causing a buzz with people in the surrounding areas clambering to book their tables. Prime was an idea brought to life by three entrepreneurs Terry Greenhill, Ferdi Pacelli and Mark Stewart. Their vision, to bring the best British steaks to the home counties in a classy upmarket environment. Terry Greenhill says “The offering concentrates on steak, but we wanted to give customers more than that.” During menu development the trio decided
to the quality of our steaks and it proves that it was totally the right decision to give the best” “The first two months of Prime have been amazing!” exclaims Terry. “It proves that there are many customers out there wanting to spend that little bit extra for an upmarket dining experience, but not have to travel all the way into the big smoke to get it”. Prime seems to have hit the ground running and with the opening of the Odyssey cinema across the road one would expect that they will compliment each other perfectly.
Another key ingredient was a good choice of cocktails and a very comprehensive wine list, says Terry that other meats, fish and a really decent burger needed to be included. “Another key ingredient was a good choice of cocktails and a very comprehensive wine list, says Terry “we were wanting to bring a slice of the London dining scene to St Albans and I think we have done that. Our interior design is fantastic and really hits the mark. You could easily think you were sitting in a restaurant in knightsbridge, and that was our aim.” “There aren’t many restaurants you can visit in the home counties that you can actually dress up to go out to and i’m please to say that at Prime you can do just that. There are far too many casual dining concepts competing with each other and Prime is something different, it stands out from all the others for the right reasons.” The key ingredient at Prime has to be the steaks with only the UK’s finest beef making the grade, sourced from grass fed ethically reared herds that graze in the scottish highlands “We are so committed to ensure that we used the best meat we would only consider Butchers that were used by the Queen herself.” says Terry. “The feedback both verbally and via online have been tremendous with regards 36 JANUARY 2015

IGNITE THEIR IMAGINATIONS
WITH A PLAYHOUSE A playhouse is every child’s dream. A place to call their own, where they can let their imaginations run wild away from the grown-ups! This is what Erica and David Llewellyn wanted for their three year old daughter Phoebe.
hung underneath the steps to add another point of interest to the playhouse. “The team back at The Playhouse Company headquarters were also extremely helpful, offering advice on the many different colours and finishes we could choose from. We have an old copper beech tree, as well as an abundance of purple flowering plants so we wanted the colour of the playhouse to compliment these. The colour we finally chose, purple with cream doors and window frames and white guttering, is the perfect partner for our garden, but is also colourful enough for Phoebe,” adds Erica. Phoebe’s “Bay Tree Cottage” took around two weeks to hand-build at The Playhouse Company’s factory in Herefordshire. It then took just over one day to install into the Llewellyn’s back garden. “It was raining heavily on the day of the installation but that did not deter Richard and his team. The playhouse went up in little over day and as soon as the rain stopped

“W
e had always wanted a playhouse for Phoebe, so as soon as we thought she was old enough to enjoy and appreciate one we started the search,” explains Erica. “We found The Playhouse Company on the Internet and after looking through its range of beautiful houses we settled on a design. Once we had chosen the house we then had to decide where to put it and as our garden is quite uneven it was difficult to find the perfect place. However, we needn’t have worried. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, came to visit us to assess our garden and the suitability of various sites.” By visiting Erica’s garden Richard was not only able to advise on where best to place their chosen playhouse but he was also able to make a few suggestions, which eventually turned their standard playhouse into one with the “wow” factor! Erica continues, “Our only stipulation was that we wanted the playhouse to have two floors, with an external staircase that went to the upper floor. After walking around our garden and inspecting various locations, Richard suggested building the playhouse around an existing old tree and incorporating the tree into the design of the playhouse – it was a fantastic idea!” The final design was a two story “cottage” style playhouse with a front “stable” door, two downstairs windows and two beautifully crafted dormer windows on the second floor. The exterior staircase wound its way around the tree to the upper floor and led to another “stable” door at the side of the house. A swing was also

Phoebe had explored her new house and moved in quite a few of her toys! She takes great pride in her “tree house” as she calls it! “We absolutely love our new playhouse. Not only is it somewhere to inspire Phoebe and encourage her to use her imagination, but it also blends beautifully into our garden without being intrusive,” concludes Erica. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, adds, “A playhouse is the perfect present which will last for years rather than days. They entice children away from the television and help to ignite their imaginations in a way that computer games and TV programmes just cannot.”

e have become one of the nation’s leaders in vision correction surgery. We combine an obsessive attitude to patient safety together with a relentless drive to ensure that we continually offer the very best and latest technological advances to patients. Every month Optometrists, Doctors, Surgeons and members of their families travel from across the UK to see Allon Barsam for his expertise in vision correction. We look after patients from across the globe who come to us for advanced vision correction. We offer the following: • Consultant led personalised eye care • Customised treatments • Internationally recognised eye surgeon • State of the art technology • Multiple locations: The Harley Street enclave of central London, The Wellington Hospital and Hertfordshire (Spires Bushey and Harpenden)
Advanced Surgical Specialisation in:
• Nearsightedness (myopia) • Farsightedness (hypermetropia) • Astigmatism • Reading vision problems (presbyopia) • Cataracts • Keratoconus • Or a combination of the above
Vision correction surgery has become the commonest and safest elective surgical procedure that adults in the western world chose to have
Expertise in the following state of the art procedures: • Laser eye surgery (LASIK, LASEK, PRK) • Refractive lens exchange ( RLE, Clarivu) • Implantable contact lenses for extreme prescriptions. • Cataract surgery (bespoke treatments with premium lenses) • Keratoconus surgery • Corneal transplant surgery • Sutureless pterygium surgery
Vision correction surgery has become the commonest and safest elective surgical procedure that adults in the western world chose to have. Despite this there is a large difference in the quality and safety of various institutions and surgeons. Information available to the public can often be confusing making it difficult for potential patients to decide where to go for treatment. Despite the importance of state of the art technology and ultra-modern facilities, ultimately the key determinate in a patient’s outcome are the skill and quality of the surgeon. This is much like the importance of the driver in a formula one racing car or the pilot of a passenger jet. The best outcomes are achieved through the combination of world class surgeon and technology and this has become the main driving force in our practice. 46 JANUARY 2015
Consultant led care has rightly become the gold standard in modern healthcare both in the NHS and in the private sector. We feel that it’s critical that patient’s considering vision correction surgery meet Allon Barsam well in advance of their planned surgery so that they can establish a trusting relationship, receive a comprehensive explanation of what they can expect and have an opportunity to ask questions or air any concerns. Communication is the key to the Doctor-Patient relationship. There are now many channels that patients will use to engage in conversation with their Doctor. We make ourselves available not only via internet, email and telephone but also with an established presence on facebook, linkedin and twitter which provides a more informal setting for patients and referring Doctors/ Optometrists to approach us with questions and feedback. Our major challenge is balancing our ever increasing popularity amongst patients and referrers with a dedicated consultant led and individualized service. In order to do this we have a wonderful team of administrative staff as well as Technicians, Nurses, Anaesthetists and Optometrists who support Mr Barsam and maximize the time that he spends with patients each time they visit the practice. Do DIY beauty products really work? Keeley Bolger mixes up a home-made nourishing blueberry lotion. Ingredients:
A handful of blueberries, 1tbsp of almond oil, 3tbsp of almond milk, 1tbsp of orange flower water.
Method:
Blend and mix all the ingredients until smooth. Strain the lotion so there’s no pulp from the blueberries, and pour into a bottle. Shake well before use, as it may naturally separate.
The verdict:
“This lotion was easy and quick to make in the blender but unless you have a really fine sieve, it’s hard to get rid of all the blueberry skin. It smelt nice but was very runny so I had to use cotton wool to apply it, making it feel more like a cleanser than a moisturiser. Cutting it with style It’s the battle of the scissors that’s now in its 30th year. Like the Oscars for super-stylists, the HJ British Hairdressing Awards is where innovative hair is crowned and salon chairs become thrones. By Lisa Haynes, Press Association
T
revor Sorbie scooped the first accolade in 1985 and other household names in hair followed; John Frieda, Andrew Collinge, Nicky Clarke and Charles Worthington are among the 15 hairdressers who have held the British Hairdresser of the Year trophy aloft. “Hair is your ultimate fashion accessory,” says Charles Worthington. “Take time to learn all the tricks of the trade from your stylist to maintain and change your look.” While boundary-pushing creative cuts are celebrated, it’s the enduring styles that underpin the kind of hair we request at the salon time and time again. The secret of an iconic hair look? Last year’s winner Akin Konizi believes it has to be “beautiful, suitable and well-executed - these three factors will make sure that your hairstyle looks good in any decade”.

Lisa Haynes gets a fuller head of hair in under an hour
A
fter an over-zealous trim to cut away summer dead ends, I felt a bit like I’d been sheared. My long hair usually acts as a makeshift snood in winter. To ease the stop gap waiting for it to grow back, I decide to cheat with Kapello’s pre-taped hair extensions. Traditional extensions involve hours stuck in the salon chair and a scary-looking hot glue gun, but this process eliminates both. It’s still a semi-permanent route to longer/thicker hair, but applied by an extensions specialist, the two-inch strips of tape are sandwiched either side of your natural hair. Before my appointment, I have my colour assessed and pick out potential hues that match with the caramel tones in my hair. When I arrive at the
salon for E-Day (extensions day), pre-taped, long pieces are laid out ready to go. Because I want a natural but fuller look, each tape is cut into half sizes for extra flexibility and management - I’m also told I have a particularly small head! She expertly shifts my hair and assesses my scalp shape with every piece, ensuring each of the two shades (eight for base colour, 27 for highlight) match my current colour. Tapes are cut into quarter size strips for subtle highlights around the front of my hair. Who needs bleach? In 45-minutes flat, 20 pieces are applied to my head and snipped to blend in with my own cut. The results are impressive. The tapes feel super-flat on my head when I run my hands through my hair and the colour blends seamlessly with my own. It’s
like my own hair, but better. I meet my friends for a weekend away, who all compliment me on my hair but have no clue about my discreet additions. I’m given care instructions (sulphate-free shampoo, detangling brush, and drying hair thoroughly) and - here comes the addictive part - I’m told that the pre-taped extensions can be reapplied a further three to four times. Whether it’s skinny hair, won’t-grow hair or I-only-asked-for-a-trim-but-got-this hair, Kapello pretapes are the speedy way to achieve swooshy locks. Half head of Kapello extensions, from £300 at Errol Douglas, London (www.erroldouglas. com). Kapello pre-taped hair extensions available at salons nationwide, from £225. s architectural interior designers, not only do we provide the design and installation of an interior space, we also undertake extensions and conversions to the exterior of a property. Having completed a vast number of extensions in London alone, we have the skills and experience required to ensure a smooth and professional service from conception through to completion and our longevity in the industry has afforded us the added luxury of being able to filter our suppliers and work force, an area where many other businesses fall short. The expertise required from the very first moment the pen touches the paper, to the moment where the very last screw has been turned should not be underestimated. FRESH IDEAS J
ohn Ladbury and Company is starting 2015 with fresh, new ideas for our showroom in Welham Green, starting with a refurbishment of two of our displays. We have recently embraced new designs and appliances and incorporated a media centre into one of our displays as increasingly we are being asked to design furniture to complement the ‘live in’ kitchen of today. Housing a television, music centre, computer and any necessary peripherals and storage, our media centres are fast becoming a core requirement rather than an add on, demonstrating that today’s kitchen is all about family living, complementing the home and enhancing the look. John Ladbury and Company kitchen’s integrate seamlessly with the hectic pace of today; lives that are complex, busy and individual. The modern kitchen is often the hub of the house, with a range of appliances needed to cater for all diets, age groups and life-styles.
Our media centres are fast becoming a core requirement rather than an add on, demonstrating that today’s kitchen is all about family living John Ladbury and Company bear this in mind when designing a kitchen, discussing with the client their lifestyle and how it reflects their needs and their long-term requirements. We advise accordingly, recognising that each kitchen needs to be individually designed and tailored to fit each person. Which Double Glazing Trader
W
hen a homeowner commits to making improvements to their abode one of the hardest choices they face is finding a reputable installer who they know will do a quality job; the last thing anyone wants is to be scammed or left out of pocket due to negligent workmanship, or indeed a few years down the line find that the “guarantee” is not worth the paper it is written on. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. Back in 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. To be recognised in this way is an extremely prestigious achievement’ for any supplier, particularly as 25% of traders fail during the assessment stage. It demonstrates to customers that Which Trusted Traders have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete fairness and transparency at all times. Having such status enables us to display the Which? Trusted Traders logo on all

marketing materials which will give customers added confidence when choosing a double glazing supplier ahead of any other local installation company. Which? Trusted Traders also provides its own ombudsman service which supplies an independent dispute resolution whenever any issues arise between a customer and scheme member. This is just the latest in a series of industry recognised accreditations that Hazlemere holds, as they are also FENSA Registered Installers (No. 10589), ISO 9001 accredited for quality management and ISO 14001 for waste management, as they re-cycle all the old windows, doors and conservatories they remove. In addition Hazlemere now provide an insurance back warranty from the Independent Warranty Association with every window or door or conservatory they install. According to Which? even if a double glazing installer has been recommended to you by a family member, neighbour or friend, they advise you still should find out if they are a Which Trusted Trader as well as a member of an approved industry body. Some double glazing companies are sadly renowned for dubious selling techniques - so it’s really little wonder that only around 6% of Which? members say they trust glazing firms. No wonder then, that the vast majority of Which? members who took part in the survey in 2014 decided to use independent double glazing installers to carry out work on their properties rather than use big brand names, with some citing the traders’ need to maintain their strong reputations in the community as the reason for going local. In 2014, Which? asked 2,872 of their members questions concerning their experience of double glazing installation and companies. All had double glazing installed in the last 5 years with either a local/independent firm or a big name such as Anglian, Everest, Safestyle or Zenith.
Should One Choose?
Which? asked them to rate the double glazing supplier they used for various aspects of their experience, such as quotation process and customer service. This Which? double glazing company customer satisfaction survey carried out last year showed that the big four national brands – Zenith (40% customer satisfaction), Safestyle (54%), Anglian (56%) and Everest (59%) did not fair as well as local independent companies and traders who had a much higher customer satisfaction rating of 82%. Which? is unbiased and are independent consumer champions, who say they buy every product they test and
should be for you to end up with 3 comparable quotes in writing and to meet the firm that will be spending days or weeks at your property. A good double glazing supplier should never pressure you into a sale – never agree to anything on the spot. As Which? advises “remember that the cheapest quote might not be the best.” Recommendations count for a lot in the glazing industry. If friends, family or neighbours can’t help, look at reviews for local glazing companies on Which? Trusted Traders. Seek evidence of appropriate specialties – as for example a double glazing company might be experts in aluminium
A good double glazing supplier should never pressure you into a sale – never agree to anything on the spot don’t accept at face value what any “advertising” might claim, so it is therefore advice consumers can trust.
