ienna Festival Ballet celebrates 35 years with an outstanding Anniversary Gala. We are proud to present highlights from the world’s most beloved Tchaikovsky ballets which have featured in our repertoire over the years. It’s official: we are a nation of Sauvignon Blanc Fanatics! St Albans has topped the polls as Great Britain’s greatest drinkers of Pinot Noir. This is one of the key findings from a recent study of the sales data at Laithwaite’s Wine, the UK’s largest home delivery wine merchant, and its 400,000+ loyal customers. It’s no wonder that a new cookery school opening in Radlett would be received with a great welcome. The many TV programmes and colour magazine articles which shower us with delicious food creations every day and the vibrant eating out scene have helped create a huge interest in baking and cookery of every description. Brampton College, an Independent Sixth Form College based in North West London, has been helping students achieve their academic aims for 25 years. The Department for Education has just released the performance tables for 2014 and Brampton College is the number one Sixth Form College in London for the 14th year running and 4th in the country.

Foraging for

wild garlic I love this time of year. Spring is in the air, and I can finally break out of my kitchen and head for the great outdoors in search of wild and wonderful ingredients. by Marcus McGuinness

W

inter is not a great time for foraging, you see - what with the cold, rain and snow, you’d be hard pushed to find anything edible - let alone tasty - growing amongst the bushes. But now the sun is starting to creep through, it’s my sign that I’m about to get my hands on all sorts of deliciously wild ingredients from as close to home as the Brocket Hall Estate grounds where my restaurant, Auberge du Lac, is situated. Despite my passion for foraging, I have to admit that I’m rather hesitant about encouraging people to forage. Not to sound boring, but picking mushrooms, for example, is not something that anyone should take on lightly – believe it or not, there’s a lot of skill involved in identifying the types of mushrooms, and getting it wrong can have very serious consequences. However, there are some wild ingredients that I’m not quite so strict about – my favourite being the one that you can probably smell right now if you try hard enough… Wild Garlic! Foraging for wild garlic is a whole different ball game to mushrooms and the like – yes, you still need to be careful, but if you let your nose lead the way, you can’t go too far wrong. THE DETAILS Auberge du Lac Brocket Hall, Welwyn, Hertfordshire AL8 7XG ••••• 01707 368888 www.aubergedulac.co.uk • www.brocket-hall.co.uk 12 march 2015

Wild garlic is usually found in woodlands, near or among the bluebells. Once you’ve spotted it, you’ll probably notice just how much of it there is – some describe it as a carpet of wild garlic! It is identifiable by its lush leaves, and more importantly, its smell. Before collecting it, rub and crush some of the leaves in your hand to ensure the familiar scent of the garlic is released. Unlike domestic garlic, wild garlic is championed for its leaves, rather than its bulbs – although everything is edible, from the bulb to the flowers. The leaves start appearing from early March and they only really last until late May. Late May is when the flowers arrive, though, so all is not lost, although they are much smaller in quantity than the leaves. In early autumn you can actually dig up the bulb itself and use it as you would a domestic garlic bulb – but be warned, you won’t find it split into handy cloves, and it would spell the end of your garlic plant. Wild garlic has a very similar taste to domestic garlic, but it is slightly milder, and you may be pleased to hear that it doesn’t take hold of your breath in the same powerful way either! The leaves are absolutely delicious raw or cooked, and work very well in salads and soups. I personally love stirring them in to pastas and risottos too – here is one of my favourite risotto recipes:

WILD GARLIC RISOTTO Ingredients: Splash of olive oil • 50g goats butter • 4 shallots – diced 2 cloves of garlic – chopped • 2 sprigs of thyme 200g risotto rice • 100ml white wine • 600ml chicken stock 100g parmesan cheese • 100g mascarpone 200g wild garlic leaves – washed and chopped Lemon juice – optional Method: 1. Add the shallots, garlic, thyme, and a pinch of salt to a pan with the olive oil and butter 2. Sweat down for 4-5 minutes, or until translucent 3. Add the risotto rice and sweat down for a further 4-5 minutes, or until translucent 4. Add the white whine 5. Add the chicken stock 100ml at a time – stirring all the time, Wait until each 100ml of chicken stock has been absorbed before adding the next. This will take approx. 18-20 minutes 6. Take the rice off the heat 7. Stir in the parmesan and mascarpone, and check if it needs seasoning 8. Pop a lid on and let it rest for 4-5 minutes 9. Stir in the chopped wild garlic leaves 10. If desired, finish with a squeeze of lemon juice

or the past eight years Kerry Darlington has steadily built a reputation as a leading British artist. Her work is highly expressive and readily recognisable for the use of raised relief elements, sealed with resin producing a contemporary finish easily mistaken for glass or ceramic tile. Darlington has been at the forefront in the use of the material, and is acknowledged as the inspiration behind other artist’s creations. Darlington first shot to attention with her symbolic ‘Tree of Life’ series, which became an instant success. A hugely creative and diverse individual, her worked developed to include stunning abstracts, playful animals alongside detailed portraiture work. In recognition of her growth and success, Darlington was awarded ‘Artist of the Year’ by the Fine Art Trade Guild in both 2012 and 2014. Through her latest collection of desirable Unique Editions Kerry has brought to life some of her most favourite depictions, as well as exploring deeper into her newer figurative approach. Commenting on this transition, Kerry says “My figurative painting is a combination of pattern, nature, the colour of energy and an ephemeral, nostalgic subject matter. I cannot offer a more detailed explanation for these paintings, they have a title and they have a ‘feeling’. The feeling I give to the painting and that which the painting gives back to me as I paint it, can be its’ only explanation” These new works, as well as some outstanding originals, will be arriving shortly at Gallery Rouge. A raft of refinements and extra equipment in 2014 has kept one of Kia’s best selling models bang up to date and it still looks striking compared to its significantly more expensive rivals. With its industry topping seven-year warranty and the option of two or four-wheel drive for ultimate flexibility, the Sportage offers a compelling package. On the outside, a freshly designed front grille, new LED taillights and a ‘shark fin’ roof antenna are among the updates to complement the spacious and practical quality interior. The car’s 564-litre boot has a lower lip and more space under the load cover. What’s more, leather straps attached to the seatbacks mean they’re easy to fold down and hey presto, there’s now 1,353 litres of storage at your disposal. The entry level Sportage comes with a 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine and two diesel units are also available, a 1.7-litre CRDi for front-wheel-drive models, which delivers up to 54mpg fuel economy and a 2.0-litre CRDi powering four-wheel-drive cars. Kia makes it so simple to choose a trim level as they’re named 1, 2, 3 and 4 with the KX prefix designating four-wheel-drive models. As you’d expect from a manufacturer that offers a seven-year warranty on all its models, the Sportage’s standard specification includes alloy wheels, air-

Choose the level 2 trim and you’ll benefit from rear parking sensors and half-leather seats. At the top of the range, the level 4 models sport super bright xenon headlights, satellite navigation, heated seats and a panoramic sunroof. When it comes to safety, owners can be reassured by a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. The Sportage range is fitted with a full set of airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), anti-lock brakes (ABS), ISOFIX child-seat mounts and anti-whiplash headrests. In terms of ownership, residual values are strong according to industry experts, who predict the Sportage will retain more than 50 per cent of its retail price after three years. Kia also offers a pre-paid servicing pack that covers all routine maintenance for three years. The Sportage starts at £17,500 on the road. To arrange a test drive, visit www.brayleys.co.uk

I would like to share a story with you; we are currently showcasing 2014 double award winning artist Antonio Russo and are proud to be chosen as the first gallery in the UK to display his Portrait Collection. Russo’s Portrait collection will only be with us until the end of March before they travel to New York for their debut showing. Brampton College the No. 1 Sixth Form College in London

B

rampton College, an Independent Sixth Form College based in North West London, has been helping students achieve their academic aims for 25 years. The Department for Education has just released the performance tables for 2014 and Brampton College is the number one Sixth Form College in London - for the 14th year running – and 4th in the country. Their students achieve outstanding examination results with 51% obtaining A*/A grades and 86% A*/A/B grades. The Department for Education also measures how much progress students have made from GCSE to A level. On this measure of ‘Value Added’, Brampton College was placed 4th in the country. This is out of over 2,600 schools and colleges, both state and private, and a remarkable achievement. Furthermore, 70% of their students received their first choice university with the majority progressing to Russell Group Universities. Bernard Canetti, the original founder and Principal of Brampton College, says “I’m delighted that our college has yet again topped the League Tables. The combination of outstanding exam results and the exceptional level of improvement from GCSE to A level demonstrates the college’s exceptional qualities and the dedication of our teaching staff - not to mention the determination of our students!” He attributes much of their success to the care and commitment of the staff. With 250 students enrolled on A level or GCSE courses, the college’s primary aim is to help each individual student succeed in their aspirations and achieve the best possible exam results. To this end, the college places an emphasis on individual support and mentoring. Class sizes are small, with an average of seven, and weekly tutorials are available in all subjects to review

coursework and tests, discuss areas of difficulty and to prepare and build confidence for exams. Through their specialised and comprehensive UCAS programme, the college also provides careful guidance and expertise in obtaining a university place. Canetti explains that “Brampton also understands students’ individual needs by closely monitoring their progress in a way that is unique and more rigorous than in most other establishments.” Weekly or fortnightly tests are an integral feature of all courses and a critical factor in the success of their students. They identify areas of weakness and help students gain the confidence and techniques for succeeding in exams. Heads of Department supervise progress using these weekly test and homework marks, and these records are then passed on to each student’s Personal Tutor to discuss with them in their weekly meeting. The Principal and Vice Principals also meet every week to discuss student performance, which means action can be taken if a student is making insufficient progress towards achieving their aims. Communication and collaboration with parents is highly valued and students’ performance is summarised in fortnightly reports, which are readily available to parents. Karen Lubner, a parent, enthuses that “Brampton really took the time to understand Hannah. With their small classes and focus on the individual, Brampton provided the right motivation for Hannah to bring out the best in herself.” It’s this individual attention and support within a relaxed and friendly environment that seems to be the winning formula. One student summarises, “Moving to Brampton opened my eyes to a whole other world of learning. The teachers at Brampton strive to make the lessons more engaging for all, and are more than happy to continue the discussion after class. Most importantly, both the staff and the students motivate you to achieve your very best.” Max Bull achieved A*grades and a place at LSE, and results like that speak for themselves. A round-up of some the designers and their amazing collections… BURBERRY PRORSUM

Burberry showed its Womenswear Autumn/Winter 2015 collection, entitled “Patchwork, Pattern & Prints”. British Burberry models and current faces of the brand’s campaigns Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Naomi Campbell and Jourdan Dunn, came together to see the new collection in Kensington Gardens. Other guests included musicians Sam Smith and Paloma Faith. Previewing a womenswear collection of paisley and floral bohemian prints inspired by Durham quilts, patchwork prints and animal and camouflage printed lace. Introducing The Bucket Bag, The Long Fringe Scarf in check cashmere, the Ponytail boot and The Burberry Round Shades collection of sunglasses.

TEMPERLEY LONDON

Winter ’15 weaves a tale bursting with modern bohemianism and optimism - setting the mood for today’s Temperley London woman. Relaxed and decadent, with tribal and nomadic inspiration –the collection combines elongated and layered silhouettes with languid tailoring capturing the opulent mood of 1920’s Paul Poiret. Colours and fabrics are rich and warm – camel, teal, jet black, turmeric, and hibiscus juxtaposed with shimmering metallics, topaz blue and acidic pops of orange. Textured feather and crocodile jacquards mix with soft, fluid pale silks and sequins for the evening. Knitwear is key with layered knit jacquards and printed knits in tribal and feather inspired artworks. Oversized luxurious coats, relaxed velvet tuxedo jackets, wrap-front trousers and circle legged jumpsuits bring a fresh, confident direction. “This season is both effortless and confident, one collection for all the women of Temperley London” – Alice Temperley MBE

Mulberry presented its Autumn Winter 2015 Catwalk Collection from its Kensington showroom on Sunday 22 & Monday 23 February. The collection was inspired by “the enticing world of Georgian interiors, known for their elegance, lightness and stylised flair epitomised in the Rococo and neo-classical design elements of architects such as Robert Adam and John Soames.” To showcase the collection, Mulberry commissioned British artist Tom Price to create an ethereal installation based on the theme and inspiration. The resulting five large scale arches with their over spilling ‘blossom’ formed a dramatic backdrop to the showroom. Tom has a background in sculpture and design and much of the work he produces seeks to explore the untapped potential of familiar, everyday materials and their ability to turn into beautiful sculptures. Highlights from the collection include the Dixter Coat and Short Hatton Dress, both hand-painted with a bespoke Filigree design, sporty 4 6 MARCH 2 0 1 5

jacquard knits, a contemporary and super-luxe Anorak in the softest leather, a dramatic cape in Mulberry heritage check, and a cool, sexy jumpsuit woven in a bespoke satin jacquard design. The Jamie and Roxette bags play to the two sides of Mulberry: the Jamie with its casual-cool bucket shape, created in miniature for the Catwalk Collection, and the smart uptown Roxette finished in luxurious haircalf.

This collection marks the brand’s 200 year celebrations at the Serpentine galleries. A luxury heritage that is never far from view with inspirations for the collection being drawn from the brand’s birth place. Stunning images capturing the raw nature of the isle of skye , the work produced by Albert Watson are references using colour and organic textures throughout the collection. fabrics, slivers of exposed skin, and attitude with which she stalks the runway, make this a polished rather than bohemian interpretation of the sauvage. Print inspiration came from aerial views of the graphic patterns in the desert made by the Bahrain race track; interpretations of these patterns weave through the collection in diverse fabrications and techniques; prints in black, white and red are patch-worked against animal print on an embroidered shift dress, woven and knitted on jacquard coats and separates, and embroidered on hemlines and stone encrusted dresses. Subtle black, white, navy and blue base colours are enlivened with bright red, topaz and chartreuse. The mixing of contrasting prints and patterns is prevalent throughout; a crocodile effect jacquard coat is worn with abstract leopard print trousers, whilst a race track inspired knitted blanket coat is belted over a leopard print top. Patterns are also juxtaposed on the brand’s signature

raised wavy jacquard is used to give multiple layers creating a leaf stitch. Prestonfield House Flemish tapestry fades into a floral motif inspired by Gibbons’ woodcarving; this translates through raised macramé and embossed leather. Textured fur almost resembles a silk moiré bark while other pieces are ordained with carved mink argyle, once again giving a nod to tradition. ‘This collection happens at a time not many brands have the privilege of celebrating. Challenging the boundaries of what can be created with knitwear and truly showcasing Pringle of Scotland as an innovative luxury brand’ Technical boundaries are being pushed with 3d printing on complete garments, reinventing traditional techniques by cutting a skirt on the bias and embroidering 3d chain mail with cashmere yarn. Heat formed knitwear is moulded to achieve memory formed shape and rounded silhouettes. The colour palette consists of liquorice, nightshade, regal purple with blasts of ruby red that are calmed by moments of ebony. Blush camel, slates and whites neutralise the collection bringing it back to elements of nature.

Differing jersey fabrications are combined to progress the brand’s signature draping; sheer, opaque and shine jersey panels combine in wrap dresses and tops constructed from asymmetric panels that lend a modern fluidity to the silhouette. We can now look forward to the designer trends that will be hitting the high streets for Autumn/Winter 2015, and re-create the look so stylishly presented on the catwalk. “Although you may not wear the exact look that you see coming down the runway on a model, you will pick up little things. client at Riverbanks Clinic. “I am obsessed with selfies! I have an Instagram account and love to post photos, even my husband rolls his eyes and groans when I am standing still, posing into my phone camera. I always felt I had to take numerous shots before I could be happy enough to post any. “It never occurred to me that this might be of any relevance to aesthetic procedures, but during my in-depth consultation with Dr. Jain it was something he asked me about. Discussing my objectives, he dissuaded me from plastic surgery, reassuring me that some non-surgical treatments would be enough for the look I want to achieve. “I am definitely more confident in my appearance, and travel faithfully to see Ravi every few months – I still love taking selfies, but now it takes a lot less attempts to be happy with the results!” Dr. Ravi Jain has implemented the ‘Selfie test’ as part of his Harmony Programme – an in-depth process designed to involve the patient in the decisions regarding their treatment plan, to a much greater degree than traditional consultations. Step forward, ‘the Selfie Test’. A new system devised by leading aesthetic physician Dr Ravi Jain of Riverbanks Clinic, which now forms part of his in-depth consultations. Recent research, commissioned by Riverbanks Clinic and conducted by independent survey company OnePoll, reveals that two thirds of women feel the need to take more than half a dozen ‘selfies’ (up-close self-portraits taken with a camera phone) before they are happy to share the results with others or post them on social media. The study, which questioned 1,000 18-35 year old women, found a correlation between the number of selfies taken before one is deemed acceptable for sharing, and the likelihood to consider cosmetic treatments such as injectables or even surgery. Over a third of those who take sixteen images or more, on average, are ‘very likely to have, or have had cosmetic surgery’ compared to only 8% of those who take less than five. In fact, 62% of the group who take less than five selfies state they are ‘unlikely to’ of ‘definitely wouldn’t’ consider aesthetic treatments. Whilst it’s relatively unsurprising that those women who feel the pressure to take a dozen or more selfportraits are more likely to consider cosmetic procedures, the study has highlighted a particular vulnerability in those who are younger. “Unfortunately the aesthetics sector can be a murky industry, and there needs to be particular care surrounding young or vulnerable people’s insecurities which could leave them prey to unscrupulous practitioners, and unproven or drastic, unnecessary treatments. OVERNIGHT SUCCESS Everyone knows that getting eight hours of shut-eye a night will ensure you look your best, but did you also know you can harness the power of sleep to boost your natural beauty? By Katie Wright, Press Association

“A

t night, the skin is in repair mode, just like the rest of the body, and is more receptive to concentrated, targeted treatment during hours of rest,” says Dr Tom Mammone, executive director of skin physiology and pharmacology at Clinique. “After dark, your skin cell renewal is much more active, eight times more active than at 1pm,” agrees Emma Schulz, national education manager for Darphin. “The biggest mistake people make is not putting anything on the skin before bed, so it uses up all the natural oils.” And it’s not just your skin that can benefit. Supercharge your beauty sleep with these powerful products...

PEEL AWAY THE YEARS

Want to wake up looking rested and rejuvenated - even when you’re feeling anything but? Superdrug’s Naturally Radiant Glycolic Overnight Peel, £5.99 (www.superdrug. com), uses glycolic acid and antioxidants to exfoliate and fade pigmentation problems while you sleep. Apply after removing your make-up (being careful to avoid the eye area) and simply wash off the next morning.

SUPER SERUM

If you haven’t already added an anti-ageing serum to your evening routine, what are you waiting for? Kiehl’s HydroPlumping Re-Texturising Serum Concentrate, £40 (www. kiehls.co.uk), contains glycerine, which acts like a magnet to draw moisture into the skin and has been proven to boost hydration overnight. Smooth on a fine layer (it’s thinner than a face cream) and allow to absorb before applying your moisturiser. 52 march 2015

MASK THE PROBLEM

“While you are asleep, skin is busy repairing damage caused during the day, but is more prone to dehydration,” says Dr Mammone. Clinique’s Moisture Surge Overnight Mask, £30 (www.clinique.co.uk), is formulated to stem the flow, delivering all-important hyaluronic acid and seed extracts to strengthen the barrier that locks in moisture. Even better, you don’t have to wash it off in the morning.

CREAM OF THE CROP

If you prefer the nourishing feel of a thick, luscious face cream last thing at night, you’ll love The Jojoba Company Intense Overnight Renewal Cream, £34.95 (www.oneway2naturalhealth. com). Packed with skin saviours like vitamin E, marine collagen and argan oil, it plumps and promotes overnight skin renewal. Warm the cream between your fingertips before gently smoothing over the face and neck.

Buy it now To mark National Stress Awareness Day on November 5, Aveda has partnered with the Stress Management Society to share tips on how to minimise day-to-day stressors. If you can’t make it to an Aveda counter on the day for a complimentary massage, try inhaling the soothing scent of the Stress Fix Concentrate rollerball, £22 (www.aveda.co.uk), whenever you feel your blood pressure rising.

Tried & tested Our testers line up to try a trio of liquid eyeliners Yves Saint Laurent Eyeliner Baby Doll (in Gris Vinyle), )

There’s a subtle shimmer to this charcoal grey liner when you apply along the lash line. The wand is quite long and thin, so you need to be careful and precise, but it defines well, dries quickly (so no messy liquid on the crease of the lid), and 5/5 rinses off easily with makeup remover. £25 (www.yslbeauty.co.uk)

Soap & Glory Supercat Fat Jumbo Carbon Black Ink Eyeliner This eyeliner may look a little chunky, with its angled edge designed to achieve that Sixties flick, but if you don’t want to your lids too heavily lined, it’s easy to use the edge of the liner close to the lashes for a more subtle outline. It has good staying power too, lasting all day. £7, Boots

I’ve wanted to master the Alexa Chung flick for ages but could never manage with soft eyeliner brushes. This sharp felt-tip liner was far easier and way more precise. With a bit of practise (hint: YouTube tutorials), and a few coats to build up the colour, I had cat-eyes to be proud of. £23 (www.burberry.com)

ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT

HAIR HYDRATION

A true ‘hero’ product, Philip Kingsley Elasticizer, £15 (www.feelunique.com) was originally invented by the legendary hair dresser for Audrey Hepburn in 1974 and is still a bestseller. The pre-shampoo ultra-conditioning treatment can also be used overnight and rinsed out in your morning shower. Apply to damp hair and use a shower cap or towel to prevent the chills!

SCENT TO SLEEP

Indulging in a bit of pre-bed ‘me time’ will help send you off to the land of nod in no time. Add a few drops of Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil, £40 (www.aromatherapyassociates.com), to your bath or smooth over your skin before showering and breathe in the calming scents of chamomile and sandalwood.

What the Victorians did for us When the Victorians first dreamt of growing exotic plants in glass houses they could hardly have imagined that they were starting a lifestyle trend that continues to this day

T

oday, the immensely elegant glass buildings of yesteryear are designed from state of the art materials to create living spaces that are used for everything from dining rooms to kitchens, from playrooms to gyms and kitchens to offices. Homeowners have conservatories that are separated by doors from the rest of the house whilst others create vast openings that allow the conservatory extension to blend seamlessly with the home’s interior. Replica Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian models finished with detailed architectural features compete for popularity with stunningly contemporary glass rooms where the emphasis is on creating impact from clean, simple forms. But how exactly do you make the leap from the building of your dreams to the reality you can live in every day? Speak to any homeowner that has embarked on a building project and they will almost certainly be able to regale you with enough horror stories of when things have gone wrong to put you off for good. Certainly building a

62 march 2015

conservatory or orangery is a major building project which is why you need to find a company that has a proven track record, shares your vision, your enthusiasm and, most importantly, appreciates your budget and is prepared to work with you to minimise disruption. Hazlemere Conservatories is a conservatory specialist with showrooms in High Wycombe and Welwyn Garden City with a penchant for helping their customers create distinctive conservatories and so know that the dream doesn’t always match the reality. “During the 80’s and a large part of the 90’s conservatories were being stuck on to what seemed like just about everyone’s houses. Looking at many of the conservatories that were built during this era, you could perhaps be forgiven for thinking they’ve been there far longer. However building materials evolve and in the last 10 years there has been a considerable step-change in the quality of conservatories that are available. Today’s buildings should look good well into the future as long as they are designed and built with modern materials as an

integral part of your home.” According to Hazlemere, one of the crucial keys to a successful conservatory or orangery build is about determining from the outset if you expect to use the room all year round. If you do then heating it needs to be as big a consideration as keeping it cool in the summer. With advances in glass and framing technology it is indeed possible for your conservatory or orangery to provide a snug retreat in the winter and a cool haven in the summer but the specification has to be right. The only way for a company to determine what your conservatory’s exact specification needs to be is to conduct a detailed site survey which will take into account the position of the conservatory in relation to both your home and the

You need to consider how you will heat your conservatory before you begin to ensure relevant works are carried out direction of the sun upon it. Nowadays, specialised glazing is available that reflects the sun’s heat and is particularly useful in South facing conservatories or orangeries. Tinted glass is also an important consideration if you want to use your conservatory to watch television or use a computer. Effective opening vents in the ceiling of the conservatory will allow hot air in the summer months to escape quickly. These essential vents can be manually or electrically operated and some companies offer automatic rain detectors to ensure vents close as soon as it begins to rain. Installing electrics for a fan will help to disperse warm air upwards in the summer but can also be reversed in the winter to keep the warm air down rather than letting it escape upwards. Heat extractors are a highly effective way of removing warm air at the hottest times of the year and help to control humidity. Air exchange systems work in a similar way but with the added benefit of bringing warm air back into the building as well. Opting for air conditioning is always an option although it can be expensive to run and will require more on-going maintenance. The professionals at Hazlemere Conservatories advise that with so much glass in a conservatory (how energy

efficient the specification), some heat loss is inevitable, however by selecting the best type of sealed units available, this can be minimised to ensure that you can use your orangery or conservatory all year round. Just as glass can be specified to reflect the sun’s heat, there are also reflective coatings that keep the heat inside a conservatory which is invaluable in colder north facing buildings. You need to consider how you will heat your conservatory before you begin to ensure relevant works are carried out as the building work progresses. To heat your conservatory you can opt to extend your existing central heating system or you can install an independent heating system just for the new area. If you do plan to extend your existing central heating then you should install individual room thermostats to ensure that you can increase the heat in the cooler conservatory area when you need it without affecting the heating in the rest of the house. If you opt for an independent heating source then consider low level wall mounted radiators or underfloor heating for the best aesthetic effect, both of which are easily installed as part of the main build programme. Whilst the choices to be made are undoubtedly complex, an experienced conservatory company will be able to guide you through the best combination of options for your particular conservatory and ensure that the cost of making it useable all year round is built in to your quote from outset and thus avoid adding ‘extras’ in at a later stage. By taking the time to ensure that you have considered all of the available options you stand a good chance of having your dream conservatory and enjoying the glass house legacy the Victorians left us. THE DETAILS Hazlemere Conservatories is a specialist division of the Hazlemere Group (with its factory and Head Office in High Wycombe), who and specialise in designing, manufacturing and installing high quality, custombuilt double glazed conservatories, glass extensions, orangeries and Loggia in both aluminium and PVCu. Their attention to detail came naturally and your understanding of our wishes and worries made us feel so confident in you all. Our thanks again to you all for such a swift, tidy and brilliant job.” Sharon and Ian – Bricket Wood, Hertfordshire “Well here we are sitting in our brand new kitchen trying desperately to think of something nice to say to you... We really are rather pleased with our new surrounds. And even

Lucy is beginning to like our big new kitchen, possibly only because she can now play hop-scotch indoors! On a more serious note what can we say?? Well, our building work was carried out to schedule, give or take a couple of days, the kitchen installation was performed extremely professionally, and the end result has been more than worth waiting for. Your builders, plumber, electrician, plasterers, kitchen fitters, and decorators were all extremely friendly and obliging, appreciated the finer points of tea drinking, and treated our property with respect (brooms and step-ladders excepted). Your co-ordination skills were well demonstrated and any problems that arose were dealt with swiftly and sympathetically. All-in-all you took most of the stress out of a potentially nervous breakdown inducing time. So, we come to the bottom line – would we use you again for our next kitchen? (should I live so long) Yes we certainly would. Would we recommend you to other unenlightened souls? Again, Yes, without hesitation. Thank you once again Gary, I shall miss my late-night chats with your voicemail. Francine and Russell – Elstree, Hertfordshire “We just wanted to write to you to express our thanks for the wonderful work that you have done in renovating our kitchen. You made what seemed to us to be a pretty complex project appear very straightforward indeed and we were particularly impressed with the speed with which the work was done and the outstanding quality of the work carried out by each of the people who were involved throughout the project. A special word of thanks is due to you for the design, for co-ordinating all of the activity and for your patience and willingness to ensure that the final product was exactly what we wanted. We look forward to working with you again in the future.” Mr and Mrs L – Radlett, Hertfordshire. Bigger, the Better

The

W

e at Herts Bifold Doors and G&N Windows, pride ourselves on being able to take on an array of contracts from domestic to commercial with a commitment that no project is too big or too small. Recently we have installed our largest roof light to date, and the outcome has been spectacular.

Our most recent large roof light to cover a pool enclosure was a massive 15 m by 5m. With the assistance of a glazing specific spider crane our installation went smoothly and safely Roof lights are one of our most popular products, from small fixed flat roof lights to opening flat roof lights and larger roof lanterns, we are able to source the perfect roof light for your home. We have been in partnership with the same Architectural roof manufacturers for over 20 years. Over time we have developed a personal relationship allowing us to receive added benefits which we are able to pass on to our customers making our roofs competitively priced without compromise on quality or design. Our most recent large roof light to cover a pool enclosure was a massive 15 m by 5m. With the assistance of a glazing specific spider crane our installation went smoothly and safely, with all structural sections being installed from a purpose designed working platform, each glass unit was lifted up carefully into place being guided by our team of installers. Alongside this large roof lantern, the project involved a number of other products. The entire house required new UPVC vertical sliders, these carry all of the original detailing and operation you get from a timber vertical slider with added extras in the locking, the ability to tilt them inside for easy cleaning and a superior thermal value. This particular project also had traditional composite 72 march 2015

doors and three sets of Origin bi-fold doors. These Origin doors, available in 100’s of colours are a perfect match for any windows, their 20 year guarantee, finger safe gaskets and high specification security locking features make them one of the most popular doors on the market. Our 25 years of experience, in house technical knowledge and expertise within the industry allowed us to seamlessly manage this project from start to finish. There are a lot of different variables to consider when planning a project, collating the products from different manufactures to arrive at the same time, fitting dates with installers, collaborations with onsite contractors and cranes to organise, we take this all on board and liaise directly with your client/ architect/ main contractor to provide you with the best service possible. If you have a project in the future we would be happy to provide you with a free quotation. Ring our office or email your plans to us and we will have your complete quote in no time at all.

Are you sitting comfortably? M

any of us do not consider the health implications of the furniture we regularly use. David Holloway of FineBack Furniture in London Colney gives advice on how to avoid musculo-skeletal problems It goes without saying that parents make sure their children get the right shoe size as they grow. Similarly, the furniture a child uses to do homework, read, draw and generally be creative, should be ergonomic, appropriate and comfortable. Height adjustable desks for children are recognised as an essential component in encouraging good posture and protecting the back from an early age. As the child grows, a simple mechanism raises the desktop height to a more comfortable level. A tilting desktop provides an inclined slope for reading, drawing and painting and discourages the child from leaning forward over their work and losing back support. Electric height adjustable desks for adults are commonly referred to as Sit - Stand desks as they encourage the user to work in both a sitting and standing position. Sitting in an office chair, even a good ergonomic chair for long periods can limit the activity and freedom of movement of the individual. The human body does not operate efficiently when its movement becomes restricted and back pain sufferers are often told to keep active and vary their sitting position.

Varying the height of a sit stand desk throughout the day, provides an alternative to the static sitting posture. Back and leg muscles remain active, circulation is improved and joints keep flexible. A standing position also reduces the downward pressure from gravity on the spinal discs compared to normal sitting. Regular users of height adjustable desks have also recorded an improvement in alertness, vitality and concentration. Very few adults have been educated on how to sit correctly and consequently bad working practices become habitual and result in a back problem later in life. To achieve a healthy sitting position, an ergonomic office chair should be adjusted in seat height, seat depth and back height to conform to the users dimensions.

Choosing en ergonomic office chair that allows movement is ideal, so that back support adjusts to your working position even when leaning forward over the desk. Armrest height should be adjusted to keep your shoulders in a comfortable, balanced position to reduce tension arising in the upper body. Correct chair adjustment and alignment at the workstation are equally important in the avoidance of back pain at work. FineBack Furniture can assist with chair selection, even providing a loan chair for a short period to ensure that the user will be comfortable for the long term. ‘FROM LITTLE ACORNS’…. as planning consent has already been granted

P

erhaps only once in a lifetime an opportunity presents itself that is truly not to be missed; well here it is. Nestling in the heart of Totteridge Village – indeed, secluded behind a screened frontage and approached via a lengthy driveway, occupying a plot of half an acre – is this pretty, detached and traditionally built house, with double garages to the side and mature rear garden bordered by a selection of established evergreens. But that’s not the main attraction of this sensibly appointed family home; Planning consent has already been granted to construct a magnificent dwelling of some 6,300 sq ft, with sumptuous accommodation arranged over ground and first floors, together with an awesome leisure complex in the basement giving direct access to the stunning gardens at the rear. This prospective double fronted residence has been sympathetically designed to reflect the traditional architectural heritage of other prestigious properties in the area, whilst also encompassing a contemporary feel to ensure that today’s modern lifestyle is accounted for. The proposed ground floor accommodation will comprise a spectacular open plan living and entertainment arrangement, with kitchen/breakfast room, dining room and formal reception room flowing together seamlessly – with the addition of secluded Study, guest cloakroom, and discreet access to the integral double width garage to the side. Emphasis is particularly placed on the creation of light throughout this masterpiece, with banks of double French doors across the rear, and skylight to the breakfast room. The first floor is no less disappointing – with a bright and spacious landing giving off to the three substantial guest

suites, with the main ‘piece de resistance’ master bedroom suite virtually occupying the entire rear of the property and boasting fitted dressing room and luxury bathroom. However, the ‘wow’ factor of this creation is undoubtedly the impressive family leisure accommodation to the basement that contains a comfortably appointed cinema room and a breathtaking indoor swimming pool complex with doors opening to the garden, together with a further WC/cloakroom and a fourth guest bedroom suite. Whilst this new build property encapsulates the latest ideas in design and construction, it is almost too good to be true to find that its location is also of a premier position, being situated directly opposite Totteridge’s renowned ‘Orange Tree’ pub and picturesque pond, and close proximity to greenbelt and the Conservation area. Furthermore, within easy reach of all amenities at both High Road, Whetstone and nearby Mill Hill Broadway with the northern line tube just a ten minute walk, and the M1 and M25 motorway links just a short drive away – certainly enhances this highly enviable proposition.
