Vienna Festival Ballet
35th
ANNIVERSARY GALA
V
ienna Festival Ballet celebrates 35 years with an outstanding Anniversary Gala. We are proud to present highlights from the world’s most beloved Tchaikovsky ballets which have featured in our repertoire over the years. Highlights will include the legendary Rose Adagio and the Bluebird pas de deux from Sleeping Beauty, as well as Clara’s journey to the glittering land of snow in The Nutcracker. Gershwin’s ground breaking Rhapsody in Blue is also featured, as is the famous lakeside scene from Swan Lake, including the Dance of the Cygnets, which opens the second act. The highly successful Hip Hop scene from Vienna Festival Ballet’s Snow White also appears here, as does the Dance of the Mirlitons and the Trepak Dance from the Nutcracker. The gala closes with the beautiful Corn pas de deux from Coppélia and a spectacular grand finale. The Vienna Festival Ballet tours extensively throughout the UK, bringing well known classics to both big cities and small towns. As Artistic Director Peter Mallek explains, “A lot of the bigger companies cannot perform in smaller venues. We have tailored our productions so that we are able to adjust the ballet to fit all different sizes of stage. This means we can bring ballet as close to home for our audiences as possible, so they don’t have extra travel costs and long journeys. They can see a very high standard of ballet at an affordable price, right on their doorstep.” Vienna Festival Ballet’s reflection on 35 years of performing all over the world will take you on an unforgettable journey through the best of ballet in one magical evening. 1 6 M AY 2 0 1 5

our house is possibly the most expensive asset you will ever acquire. You will undoubtedly want to maximise the enjoyment you receive from it, ensuring it contains your personal touches. Here’s how Gallery Rouge can help you achieve just that. For almost a decade, Gallery Rouge has been recognised as the primary destination for original contemporary art in Hertfordshire. With an enviable reputation for service excellence, hear why clients return time and time again to engage their expertise.
Home Approval Service
With two well-appointed gallery spaces in St Albans and Harpenden, you can browse at leisure from a wide selection of paintings available. Whilst the galleries are bright and spacious, it’s hard to truly visualise the artwork. “It’s great that the gallery are happy to bring the artwork to my house so I can see them in my home. It helped me validate that I was making the right decision. What was really appreciated is that they came at a time which was convenient to me, especially in the evening because my husband is at work – truly exceptional!”

Art Consultancy Service
When asked ‘what kind of artwork are you looking for’ a common response is ‘I’ll know it when I see it’. But this emphasises the great dilemma – if you don’t know what’s out there, you can’t find it! This is a great strength of Gallery Rouge; working with you to guide you through the bewildering array of different styles, to help pinpoint what you really want. “The gallery consultants are so down to earth and easy to speak with. They don’t patronise or talk down to you like some other places. Neither do they try to sell you something that’s not right. They genuinely wanted to help me, and took the time to listen. I’ve now got some fantastic pieces which I love”.
Constant New Work
Finding a genuinely independent gallery these days is becoming harder. With the proliferation of art-chain shops opening in more towns and cities, choice is becoming limited. odern times mean modern technology and an up-to-the-minute approach to anti ageing. Having survived several decades of our weight obsessed world we have now adopted the more intelligent approach of looking not just at our exterior, but what constitutes it. At Riverbanks Clinic, they are scratching the surface of anti ageing with more than just a Botox needle; they are hooking it up to an IV drip of vitamins such as B1 B2 B3 B5 B6 B12, magnesium and vitamin C. Forget five a day and think more, thirty-five a day with a flush of total rehydration mixed in. Qualified doctors and specialist-trained nurses are pioneering this holistic approach using IV hydration and booster shots. Founded in Miami by Reviv, this technique deliver powerful anti oxidants straight into the bloodstream for optimum absorption. “Glutathione is the most exciting component” says
Dr Lori, an elfin, gamine power packed source of energy and information that could rival the product. But it was her Doctor status that impressed me the most. Her clear confidence in the treatment made it very easy for me to forget that little needle and saline drip combo’ just to my left. Dr Lori went onto explain glutathione is our body’s master antioxidant and detoxifier, basically summarising the two main purposes of these treatments. In a fast paced world where longevity means working well into our 60’s and beyond, we need the vitality to complement our ever-youthful appearances. It seems we not only want to look younger, we want to feel it too. For some time now it has been possible to look ten years younger, but can our bodies keep up? Until relatively recently being slim at any cost has resulted in some of the most ageing self-destructive tactics possible. Chain smoking, fat free diets or pill popping may lose the weight but along with that loss goes other
I eat for health, vitality, a radiant complexion and a healthy body losses too such as vitality, general health and a radiant complexion. No wonder this is the booster treatment favoured by work hard play hard celebrities such as Cara Delevingne; Rihanna; Kelly Osborne; Rita Ora and Miley Cyrus. A kind of antidote to our anti-life lifestyles? But is it worth getting a hang over for? Having modelled for most of my life I welcomed Riverbanks philosophy of respecting not just being slim or looking young, but the essence of well being which is nutrition. I have long been accustomed to interrogations about what I eat to ‘stay slim’, with nobody really seeming to understand being healthy and feeling good are much bigger incentives and rewards than just being slim. A common misnomer is that I am depriving myself by not succumbing to the temptation of cake, or sugar loaded convenience foods or treats, and that my genuine appetite for healthy, nutritionally sound food is some sort of act. The truth of the matter is I eat for health, vitality, a radiant complexion and a healthy body. If something’s good for me I’m half way to liking it and vice versa. Riverbanks accept that a diet rich in anti oxidants and vitamins along with regular exercise and rehydration with water is the well-trodden road to wellness. But in reality we do not always manage to eat and drink sensibly, often taking in toxins or energy zapping caffeine or alcohol, or too many chemicals, salt sugar and additives. Even the most health conscious celebrities such as Sinitta and
Madonna have become fans of Reviv. Seeing it as the quick fix way to boost wellbeing and combat the stress factor of hectic schedules, all in a mere half hour treatment. I interviewed Sinitta during her treatment at Reviv’s launch at Riverbanks and asked her why she had put her name and her face to it and become their ambassador. “I became Reviv’s ambassador during my gruelling trans Atlantic schedule for the X Factor when even Simon himself became a convert” she told me. Despite being hooked up to a drip with a reality TV film crew filming our interview, she spoke with the relaxed demeanour of someone having a pedicure. Laid out like a menu you can choose from five IV hydration wellness options and three booster shots such as B12, the “pure energy booster” which I totally recommend. Worth a shot? I think so. Dyeing to go blonde? When Kim Kardashian West unveiled her dramatic new do at Paris Fashion Week in March, brunettes the world over wondered: just how did she get her dark locks so light? By Katie Wright, Press Association DON’T DYE THIS AT HOME?
So is Kim’s black-to-blonde bleach job achievable with an off-the-shelf dye? “I would not recommend this as DIY, I have seen too many disasters,” says Tracy Hayes, global head of technical training for Fudge Professional. “Always have this process done professionally, to keep your hair in the best possible shape.” If you have warm brown or ginger hair, you should avoid the peroxide too - unless
I would always recommend shifting a shade within one to three shades of your current hair colour
A
nd with Lily Allen and Carol Vorderman recently taking the peroxide plunge too, salons have seen a spike in calls from would-be blondes. “We’ve already had so many calls from people who are desperate to copy Kim’s look, particularly darker brunettes who are looking for a complete colour overhaul, rather than blondes who just want to go a few shades lighter,” says Marc Trinder, art team director at Charles Worthington Salons. “Kim seems to have inspired a newfound colour confidence in many women.” But despite regular root touch-ups (all captured on Instagram, of course), Kim reverted back to her usual ebony shade within three weeks. Does that mean such high-maintenance hair is unsustainable, even for a millionaire who has her own ‘glam squad’ on hand? “The lightening process from very dark to very light blonde is heavy and strenuous on the hair,” warns Claire Bonney, senior technician at Radio Hair Salon. “It involves bleaching the hair, pushing it as light as it will go, possibly a double application, and of course, a much-needed toner to knock out any brassy tones.”
you want to end up with orange locks. “The red pigment is really hard to lift,” says Nice’n Easy UK colour advisor Jonathan Long, but medium to dark brown hair can be lightened: “I would always recommend shifting a shade within one to three shades of your current hair colour.” If you are tempted by the DIY route, then the greasier your hair is, the better, as the oils will help protect your scalp. Follow with a toner to avoid a brassy finish: “Lightened hair tends to pick up pollutants that can make the hair appear yellow in colour. In order to neutralise these tones, I would recommend using LIVE Toner Mousse Icy Platinum M01,” advises Sian Hickson, Schwarzkopf Brand Manager. Aftercare is crucial too. “Use shampoos and conditioners specifically for either colour-treated hair or dry and damaged hair, and use a treatment once or twice a week,” says Hickson. “Towel dry the hair before applying conditioner, as this will ensure that the conditioner penetrates further into the hair, and avoid using excessive heat on the hair, be it straighteners, wands or tongs.”

TIME TO GO PRO?
So your natural hair hue is too dark for at-home application, but what next? There’s still a lot to consider before you book in for your big blonde makeover. “This is a huge job and will need the eye and attention of a colour specialist. Getting an even result on previously coloured hair can be difficult, depending on the history of the hair,” says Claire Bonney. It’s not cheap, either. “I would say between £200 and £300 for the initial application, and £120 and £170 for the root application, depending on the salon - some high-end salons will be more expensive than this,” Tracy Hayes estimates, and you’re looking at touch-ups every six to eight weeks. Looking after your locks post-peroxide is even more important when it’s a pro job. “The process is chemically drying on the hair, so using professional products at home is imperative, as you must feed the hair the protein and moisture it needs. Regular haircuts are important too,” Bonney advises. With that level of upkeep, no wonder Kim didn’t keep her new colour for long. But that’s not to say you can’t realise your own blonde ambition, Hayes says, “as long as you are prepared to spend the time and money to keep it looking good.”

urly hair is a real mixed blessing. Those who don’t have it, want it, and those who do, hate it. Growing up with curls was a nightmare - until I discovered products to tame them, but eventually my hair stopped responding to them, so I’m always on a mission to find ‘the one’ miracle product to fight the frizz. Could Boucleme be the answer? “Founded by Michele Scott-Lynch - who once constantly straightened her unruly hair, until she found the confidence to ‘go curly’ at 30 - the threestage range is paraben and sulphate-free and uses only natural ingredients, such as coconut and argan oil, to help moisturise hair. The cleanser is not meant
to lather up, and the silky conditioner is designed to be left in on thicker hair. The final product is a gel, which initially dries crisp, but when you gently scrunch your hair, it softens into beautifully defined curls. This is the curly revolution!”

GET IT RIGHT Why it is important to specify the right bi-folding doors configuration
7 0 M AY 2 0 1 5
I
f you are thinking about replacement bi-folding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their longterm practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bi-folding doors fitted, as they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bi-folding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bi-folding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5, 7 or 9 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as they are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are consequently expensive!), so it is vital when purchasing double glazed bi-folding doors, to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, don’t buy a cheap set of folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to touch UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors that need to operate rigidly, as one, and not be in any danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic dual folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to you if you want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bi-folding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5, 7 or 9 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4, 6 or 8 section bi-folds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D”
handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having fitted. Many reputable firms will not supply bifolding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. So before ordering bi-folds, take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bi-folding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time can be very costly.

Are you sitting comfortably? M
any of us do not consider the health implications of the furniture we regularly use. David Holloway of FineBack Furniture in London Colney gives advice on how to avoid musculo-skeletal problems It goes without saying that parents make sure their children get the right shoe size as they grow. Similarly, the furniture a child uses to do homework, read, draw and generally be creative, should be ergonomic, appropriate and comfortable. Height adjustable desks for children are recognised as an essential component in encouraging good posture and protecting the back from an early age. As the child grows, a simple mechanism raises the desktop height to a more comfortable level. A tilting desktop provides an inclined slope for reading, drawing and painting and discourages the child from leaning forward over their work and losing back support. Electric height adjustable desks for adults are commonly referred to as Sit - Stand desks as they encourage the user to work in both a sitting and standing position. Sitting in an office chair, even a good ergonomic chair for long periods can limit the activity and freedom of movement of the individual. The human body does not operate efficiently when its movement becomes restricted and back pain sufferers are often told to keep active and vary their sitting position.
Varying the height of a sit stand desk throughout the day, provides an alternative to the static sitting posture. Back and leg muscles remain active, circulation is improved and joints keep flexible. A standing position also reduces the downward pressure from gravity on the spinal discs compared to normal sitting. Regular users of height adjustable desks have also recorded an improvement in alertness, vitality and concentration. Very few adults have been educated on how to sit correctly and consequently bad working practices become habitual and result in a back problem later in life. To achieve a healthy sitting position, an ergonomic office chair should be adjusted in seat height, seat depth and back height to conform to the users dimensions.
Choosing en ergonomic office chair that allows movement is ideal, so that back support adjusts to your working position even when leaning forward over the desk. Armrest height should be adjusted to keep your shoulders in a comfortable, balanced position to reduce tension arising in the upper body. and believe we offer a great service, on budget and on time – but don’t take our word for it – take a look at our testimonials: “We are writing to express our huge thanks and gratitude for saving our kitchen! We were seriously let down by another kitchen fitter who went bust mid-job and we were in real danger of our plans going to ruin. When we approached you Gary, you came up trumps! You said that you could complete the job according to plan and undo the serious errors that had been made. Gary, you were true to your word. We really appreciate your team working tirelessly to complete the project on time. Things we have said about you to others include: Gary’s knowledge and ‘can-do’ attitude was refreshing and we are really delighted with our kitchen. His team have been on hand to make adjustments when asked and they have been very
accommodating, reliable and flexible. We are thrilled that Gary and his team helped us out when we needed them, and his quality, attention to detail and craft are exemplary. We have already recommended them to family who are equally thrilled with their work and we would highly recommend them 100% to anyone else in search of the perfect kitchen. Thanks so much for all your hard work. Karen and Bradley, Mill Hill “Just a brief note to thank you and your colleagues for
A very happy family send you their heartfelt thanks for the kitchen of their dreams the wonderful job you carried out in the transformation of our kitchen. We really could not work out how the end product was going to resemble the artistic creation that you designed. Suffice to say that it surpassed our wildest dreams. As your accountant you are always telling me to be a little creative, however, I think in future I shall leave that to you as you are unquestionably superb at it. Once again, thank you so much for the professional and caring way in which you and your colleagues undertook the task.” Sally and Howard – St Albans, Hertfordshire “We are writing to say that we are delighted with our new kitchen. We left the design and colour choice to you and all we specified was a French Country Kitchen style. This is what was provided and it is wonderful, we would have no hesitation in recommending you in the future. Thanking you and all the team.” Mr and Mrs W. – Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire “A very happy family send you their heartfelt thanks for the kitchen of their dreams. With your vision and artistic imagination coupled with the skill and expertise of your fitters, tillers, plumbers and painters, you transformed a Seventies dilapidated kitchen into a virtual showroom. Their attention to detail came naturally and your understanding of our wishes and worries made us feel so confident in you all. Our thanks again to you all for such a swift, tidy and brilliant job.” Sharon and Ian – Bricket Wood, Hertfordshire “Well here we are sitting in our brand new kitchen trying desperately to think of something nice to say to you... We really are rather pleased with our new surrounds. And even
Lucy is beginning to like our big new kitchen, possibly only because she can now play hop-scotch indoors! On a more serious note what can we say?? Well, our building work was carried out to schedule, give or take a couple of days, the kitchen installation was performed extremely professionally, and the end result has been more than worth waiting for. Your builders, plumber, electrician, plasterers, kitchen fitters, and decorators were all extremely friendly and obliging, appreciated the finer points of tea drinking, and treated our property with respect (brooms and step-ladders excepted). Your co-ordination skills were well demonstrated and any problems that arose were dealt with swiftly and sympathetically. All-in-all you took most of the stress out of a potentially nervous breakdown inducing time. So, we come to the bottom line – would we use you again for our next kitchen? (should I live so long) Yes we certainly would. Would we recommend you to other unenlightened souls? Again, Yes, without hesitation. Thank you once again Gary, I shall miss my late-night chats with your voicemail. Francine and Russell – Elstree, Hertfordshire “We just wanted to write to you to express our thanks for the wonderful work that you have done in renovating our kitchen. You made what seemed to us to be a pretty complex project appear very straightforward indeed and we were particularly impressed with the speed with which the work was done and the outstanding quality of the work carried out by each of the people who were involved throughout the project. A special word of thanks is due to you for the design, for co-ordinating all of the activity and for your patience and willingness to ensure that the final product was exactly what we wanted. We look forward to working with you again in the future.” Mr and Mrs L – Radlett, Hertfordshire. Stylish Loft Apartment with Private Lift for Sale at Historic Development
M
ulti-award winning heritage developer City & Country is offering a luxurious loft apartment, featuring its own private lift, at award winning development Bentley Priory. Formerly a significant RAF base which served as the headquarters of fighter command for the Battle of Britain, Bentley Priory is now an exclusive collection of historic restoration properties in the leafy suburbs of Stanmore. Located in The West Wing, a separate wing to the adjacent Grade II Listed Mansion House, the large 1,675 sq. ft. loft apartment offers a contemporary open plan kitchen living area, with views across 57 acres of parkland towards London. Originally constructed in 1950 as officers’ accommodation, The West Wing has been transformed with the introduction of beautiful new timber sash windows, French doors and Juliet balconies, whilst the exterior of the building has been rendered and lime washed.
According to Mark Johnson, Associate at Preston Bennett New Homes, the penthouse apartment is a truly unique property. “This is the last available apartment in the historically significant Mansion House and its adjoining buildings. A truly exclusive home, the impressive penthouse is extremely spacious and features direct lift access, rooms that are bathed in natural light, and the benefit of access to the stunning landscaped grounds of Bentley Priory.” Innovatively designed to maximise space and light, the apartment features contemporary interior decoration, with a sleek Ballerina kitchen and ultra-modern appliances. The grand master bedroom also enjoys an en-suite with sanitary ware by Villeroy & Boch and underfloor heating. The open plan living spaces lend themselves to socialising and the apartment provides a perfect platform for entertaining. The private lift access adds a real sense of exclusivity to the apartment, as well as being practical for modern day living. Jo Munroe, Marketing Manager at Stannah, comments: “It’s quite unusual for Stannah to install private lifts such as this one, especially in this location where there are traditionally fewer penthouses and lofts. The lift gives the owner complete privacy and also adds a very exclusive dimension to the property.” Set in gated grounds with 24 hour security, concierge and full estate management, Bentley Priory is located just a short walk from a variety of cafés and restaurants on Stanmore high street. The development benefits from the London transport network at the end of the Jubilee line, and offers easy access to the M25 and Heathrow International Airport. The loft apartment is priced at £995,000.
