THE FUTURE OF AGEING The Design Museum, Until 25 September 2022

iscover how design can support an ageing population – and indeed our own future selves – to meet their needs, interests and aspirations with
greater agency and joy. One thing we all have in common is that we are ageing, and many of us will live into old age. Life expectancy is increasing – according to the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing - a person born today is expected to live to around 104. By 2040, over a quarter of the UK’s population will be over the age of 60, but over 70% of us will be fit and healthy with no need for social care or support. We are moving towards a future in which the population of older adults will only continue to grow. The Future of Ageing display celebrates how design can help us reimagine products, services, and environments to enhance our experience of living in later life with a selection of prototypes, sketches and research from projects that are being developed by Design Age Institute, based at the Royal College of Art, and its partners. Among them are ‘The Centaur’ – a self-balancing, two-wheeled personal

DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE RECEIVES ‘WINNING KISS’ FROM KATE AFTER CHARITY POLO VICTORY By Tony Jones
14 AUGUST 2022
T
he Duke of Cambridge received a winning kiss from his wife after his polo team were victorious in a recent fundraising tournament that netted £1 million for the couple’s charities. William and Kate kissed on both cheeks as the duchess presented the prizes after the Royal Charity Polo Cup staged in Berkshire, just a few miles from Windsor Castle, at the Castle Ground at Guards Polo Club. The couple even brought their new black cocker spaniel Orla to the event, and the dog was seen running around enjoying the summer sunshine. When the duchess presented the duke with an imitation Samurai warrior’s helmet – from the Japanese sponsors of the tournament – the duke said “wow” and returned to the podium with his fellow players from the US Polo Assn team. Playing with the duke was James Harper, who has been named as captain of the England team for the match against Uruguay for the Coronation Cup at Guards later in July. During the presentations, the MC described William as playing a defensive role with his team who beat the BP Polo and Monterosso Vikings teams. Kate handed out the helmet trophies and other awards before posing with all the players for a group photograph. Organisers said the event had raised a million pounds for good causes like London’s Air Ambulance Charity, the homeless organisation the Passage and the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. Ahead of the polo William and Kate mingled with the guests and the duchess was spotted stroking her dog as she held a drink in her hand. The Cambridges showed a rare moment of public affection when they put their arms around each other as they walked from the polo ground after the prize-giving ceremony. At their feet was Orla running around clearly enjoying the freedom but it is likely the dog was kept away from polo ponies who were stabled nearby. The same polo event in 2021 raised £500,000 but the extra support of donors this year doubled the funds for good causes, such as the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust, the Anna Freud Centre, a mental health charity for children, and the Foundling Museum.

MAKING WAVES: ARKSEN EXISTS TO INSPIRE THE NEXT
GENERATION OF EXPLORERS, SCIENTISTS, AND CONSERVATIONISTS TO VOYAGE DIFFERENTLY.
44 AUGUST 2022
“T
are not motivated to use their boats as much as they could. Many boats are designed for limited operation, meaning they are not suitable for adventurous, longrange use - by contrast, Arksen’s flagship 85ft vessel has a range of 7,000nm. An urgent shortage of marine research capacity is limiting the ability of scientists to undertake research critical to our understanding of the oceans and our climate. That’s where Arksen’s vision comes in. “One of the greatest challenges facing marine scientists is access to the ocean in suitable vessels and tools to undertake their work. Arksen acknowledges this, and endeavours to change it.” - Dominic Byrne, Sales & Marketing Director Since the public launch in January 2019, two semi-bespoke 85ft explorer vessels are in build, with hull number 5 available to market. The team are also launching their Adventure Series at Southampton International Boat Show, comprising 45ft, 30ft and 27ft weekend and day boats. More on these in the next issue. Arksen vessels have been created to meet the requirements for true explorer vessels in the 65-120ft+ range. Designed from the ground up to take you to wherever your next great adventure lies with a reliable and capable platform. Bespoke aluminium hulls have been designed to cut through the water, paired with hybrid propulsion and self-righting. On almost every level, Arksen vessels beat the competition, while being almost fully recyclable and built in the UK. In terms of engineering, efficiency, range, environmental impact, life-cycle management, usage opportunities and maintenance, the Arksen Series stands out.
“Arksen is a nontraditional marine company created from the beginning to take a different approach to business”
he word sustainability means a thousand things to a thousand people, but, if you define it in its truest sense, which is ‘not to deplete resources today that a future generation will need for prosperity or survival’, luxury is about making things that fully take that into account.” - Jasper Smith, Arksen Founder. Arksen acknowledges that their customers want to continue to explore and experience the world, but with as little enviromental impact as possible. So, their expert team has spent the last 4 years developing a boat that is more efficient, sustainable and eminently more capable than any other yacht on the market in its size range. Circular economy principles and end of life strategies combine with durability, intelligent use of recycled and low-impact materials with an experiential ownership model to create products with meaning. They also look stunning… Circular Design has long been at the heart of Arksen Founder, Jasper Smith’s business and life philosophy. In Smith’s words ‘“could you conceive of a product being designed in any other way?”. The idea that products must be designed and developed with a holistic view to maintain the Earth’s balance, is embedded in the company’s approach and its product designs. Arksen is a non-traditional marine company created from the beginning to take a different approach to business. Driven by purpose, they are building a new experiential ownership model, with the goal to produce a sustainable shift in the design, build and use of marine vessels. The marine industry has been late to react to enhance sustainability. A lack of experiential opportunity means that owners

The Arksen 85 is amongst the safest, most capable and robust vessels in her class. A remarkably efficient long-range explorer with an extensive standard specification, she is capable of embarking on worldwide adventures with a high degree of autonomy or equally at home, weekend cruising with family and friends. “One theme runs through our owners’ requirements - to be able to go further, more efficiently and economically. Our yachts reflect this need, right down to their shallow drafts allowing much more littoral cruising than comparable yachts.” - Dominic Byrne, Sales & Marketing Director The concept behind the Arksen 65 has been designed to be able to travel anywhere that the larger vessels can go, and provides the space and capacity for a couple, family or small group to live and voyage comfortably for extended periods. Due to the limited fixed air draft, the Arksen 65 has the ability to explore the European canals and sail from the Channel down to the Mediterranean. Arksen Philanthropy was created to provide project funding, facilitate cutting-edge scientific research, and produce inspiring media to encourage a greater understanding of our ocean. It comprises three core elements, the Sea Time Pledge, Yachts For Science and 10% for the ocean. This is a completely unique concept, designed to create the infrastructure for ocean access and generate funding for marine research, legal and educational projects. Arksen is a founding partner of the Yachts for Science program, a platform that matches marine scientists with private vessels to undertake field research. Yachts tend to be underutilised and often have sea time available in transit or on delivery legs which can be constructively used by scientists and researchers to carry out their work to obtain highly valued ocean access. The YFS team vet the science projects and then match them up with appropriate vessels on their database. All Arksen owners are encouraged to sign up to the Sea Time Pledge, whereby they donate a portion of their vessels’ annual sea
time to scientific or educational projects. Through our scientific network and with the help of the Yachts For Science platform, owners have access to a wealth of opportunities to turn their deliveries, transits, or downtime into vital exploration and sea time for researchers, explorers, thought leaders and filmmakers to run their projects. The projects can be run when the vessel is not in use by the owners or can be conducted as a unique and educational experience for family and friends. This provides the chance to be actively involved in furthering our knowledge of the complexity and fragility of the ocean ecosystem. Given the ocean receives less than 1% of all global charitable giving (making it the least funded of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)), the Arksen initiative, 10% for the Ocean, is a simple concept: an open invitation to individuals, families, and organisations worldwide to dedicate 10% of their charitable giving to ocean philanthropy. Funding will be directed to a collective giving fund which diversifies grant monies across pre-vetted ocean causes worldwide. The resultant funding can be delivered at scale and reach multiple innovative and impactful projects simultaneously, to advance ocean recovery and achieve environmental sustainability. Accessibility is often defined by affordability, so Arksen also offers shared ownership for all its vessels through The Adventure Syndicate. Setting out to open up more opportunities for voyaging, with a focus on enabling our community and their families to embark on life-enhancing trips, The Adventure Syndicate offers members shared ownership of Arksen vessels with full access to the services and experiences we offer. This includes lower and flexible costs, fully equipped, crewed and maintained facilities, itineraries and the opportunity to join a community of like-minded adventurers. “We know we offer a premium product built on exceptional quality, so our Adventure Syndicate programme is designed to make the full Arksen experience more accessible to families and adventurers.” - Dominic Byrne, Sales & Marketing Director. Arksen exists to encourage and motivate the next generation of explorers, scientists, and conservationists, with philanthropy and cutting-edge design at its core. You can witness their vessels, and be inspired to experience a new way of exploring at the Southampton International Boat Show in September.

he Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting. The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).
Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas
The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project. The organisers are therefore revamping the Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021. Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the 48 AUGUST 2022
world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display. The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule. The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub - dedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area.
THE DETAILS
These areas will complement the show’s other themed exhibitions: • Parvis Piscine: yacht interior design and decoration companies, • Upper Deck Lounge (at Parvis Piscine): luxury products and services, • Quai Antoine Ier: yacht tenders, water toys, luxury cars and motorbikes, • Darse Sud tent: equipment manufacturers and yachting services, • Quai Albert Ier tent: yacht-related equipment, maintenance and service companies.
Dockside Area will be open to the public. General Manager of the MYS Gaëlle Tallarida had this to say: “The Monaco Yacht Show made its grand return to the international event scene in 2021, sporting a 3-year development programme with a clearly-stated goal: to promote superyachting among a new generation of clients”. The MYS has also announced the 6th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit. Held on Tuesday 27 September 2022 at the Monaco Yacht Club, the event will address practical questions on the topics of yacht chartering, buying and building in front of an prequalified audience of experienced or new yacht owners and charterers.

The Sapphire Experience offers concierge services - i.e. directly organising yacht visits hand-in-hand with exhibitors - and a range of other VIP activities and services throughout the show. Private clients - holding “Discover” passes or “Sapphire Experience” passes (the show’s official visit programme) - and their parties (“Advise” passes) will be granted privileged access to the Dockside Area while the other areas will remain open to all passes. PROTECT YOUR SKIN – AND THE PLANET. BY KATIE WRIGHT
N
ew research has revealed some shocking statistics on the amount of plastic going to landfill each year. The Big Plastic Count saw 100,000 households track how many pieces of disposable plastic packaging they threw away, with the results showing an average of 66 pieces per home, per week. Scaling up to every household in the UK, that means around 96 billion pieces of plastic packaging are binned every year. The survey found 12% of discarded plastics were recycled in UK facilities, with a further 17% shipped abroad for processing. Many of us are looking for ways to reduce the amount of single-use plastic we buy and use, but with some products, it’s difficult to find suitable alternatives. Take sun lotion, for example. The vast majority of SPF creams and sprays come in plastic bottles and tubes, but there are planetfriendly options available that will protect your skin – without adding to your eco-guilt. stablished in 2010, Nicola Sexton is a Mother and Daughter award winning British shoe brand. Nicola’s path to the world of footwear first started when she launched a luxury designer footwear boutique in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. There, she imported as yet unknown entry level luxury brands from Italy and Spain. Unable at times to satisfy her clients’ needs within their budgets, and armed with their feedback and the technical knowledge she had gained from the designers whose collections she stocked, Nicola decided to launch her own collection. The result is a collection of timeless designs with a modern twist, with quality, craftsmanship, design and comfort at the heart of the brand’s DNA. poncho towels. Vivida’s sustainable swimwear is made from 80% post consumer recycled plastic and 20% elastane for stretch and fit. Their styles include mix and match options as well as reversible styles to ensure every piece gets ample use - buying less but getting more. The Vivida Lifestyle All-Weather Changing Robes come in two styles, including a Quilted Puffer and Sherpa Fleece-lined option. Both are available in several beautifully earthy and muted tones. Designed to shelter you in every weather condition, these robes function as high-tech, eco-friendly, insulated & rainproof personal changing rooms. The Vivida changing robes are sustainably made with thoughtful features throughout, including a two-way zip for flexibility when changing, and the ability to pack down into a convenient travel pillow. Eco features include the use of Bionic Finish® Eco PFC-free durable water-repellent coating as well as 100% post-consumer recycled polyester. In an effort to combat the very ‘dirty’ process of standard neoprene production, Vivida also offers a growing range of eco-neoprene products which are friendly to the environment and thoughtfully designed. These pieces include the Linda Wetsuit and Neptune Neo Hoodie and are made with Eco CarbonBlack neoprene, which is created from scrap rubber tyres and Eco-Softskin technology lining, which is made of recycled plastic bottles, then laminated with a solvent-free glue. Their changing poncho towels, while not yet ‘eco-friendly’, are in the process of being redesigned with the planet in mind. In the meantime, Vivida offers the Guppyfriend Washing Bag, to prevent mircofibres from escaping and making their way into our rivers and oceans. Vivida is very aware that sustainability is a continual process of improvement and effort towards goals in eco conscious manufacturing, design, and awareness. Their aim is to constantly do better as technologies, fabrics, and processes become available.

From royals to footballers, celebs have been out in force to watch the tennis this year. By Prudence Wade
A
ll eyes have been on the tennis, as Wimbledon marked a triumphant return to full crowds. And yet we’ve also been keeping a close look at the stands, which were typically full of celebrities keen to show off their fanciest tennis-appropriate outfits… While the all-white dress code only applies to the tennis players, some celebrities have used it as inspiration for their courtside looks. Sienna Miller gave her signature Noughties Boho style a 2022 update, wearing a white lacy dress given an edge with a chunky black belt and snakeskin shoes. Lashana Lynch also got in on the all-white action, while drawing upon another big trend of the season: crochet. Wearing Ralph Lauren, she paired her crocheted midi dress with a sharp tailored blazer and sporty trainers. There are some famous faces you always know you’re going to see at Wimbledon, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge firmly fall into that category. 62 AUGUST 2022
Kate is a well-known tennis fan – and patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club – and she re-wore an Alessandra Rich tea dress for the occasion, in a bright blue with white polka dots. David Beckham is another celebrity who attends Wimbledon almost every year – normally with his mother, Sandra. Beckham’s outfit was typically classy and fashion-forward this year: a perfectly tailored Ralph Lauren suit, with a double-breasted brown blazer, cream trousers and a striped shirt. Gemma Chan channelled sporty chic for her Wimbledon outfit, wearing a green checkerboard minidress from Louis Vuitton, paired with a handbag that had a bright yellow coin purse attached to look like a tennis ball. The brand’s website says the green colour of the dress “nods to the manicured tennis courts of Wimbledon” – making it a no-brainer for the occasion. Gugu Mbatha-Raw made a strong case for trousers at Wimbledon, wearing a chic and breezy navy two-piece. Rose Ayling-Ellis enjoyed a day in the royal box with her mother, wearing a pastel floral minidress from RIXO with a white blazer

over the top. Florals proved a powerful draw at Wimbledon, with Mary Berry classic white dress, amped up with accessories. Like the Duchess of Cambridge, Jenkins went down the tea dress route a blue LK Bennett dress in a cornflower print, which the brand says is “inspired by the English countryside”. Some celebs are such big tennis fans, they aren’t content with going to Wimbledon just once – and this year, Vogue editor Anna Wintour was one of those people. This look is peak Wintour, with a long embroidered coat and her signature shades. Wintour’s outfit for her second appearance was a bit more unexpected, with a brown leather jacket giving her look more of an edge – but the trusty big sunglasses remained. Tom Daley brought a bit of sartorial sunshine to Wimbledon this year, watching the tennis with his husband Dustin Lance Black in a bright yellow suit paired with a pale pink tie. Ashley Roberts amped up the sex appeal for the tennis, wearing a silky beige minidress with an asymmetric cowl neckline and interesting cut-out. 64 AUGUST 2022

Interiors A TOUCH OF CLASS
NATURE CALLS Biophilic design will be one of the biggest interior trends of AW22, according to eco paint specialists Victory Colours. Biophilic interiors bring elements of the natural world into our home in a bid to improve our well-being and mental health. And while houseplants and natural materials are often considered the first steps into biophilia, switching up the home’s colour scheme can also have a real impact. “You can embrace biophilia while embracing a spectrum of colours. Nature is more than greenery, take inspiration from flower beds, rivers, streams and rugged coastal paths. victorycolours.co.uk

SCANDINAVIAN UPDATES Fritz Hansen
The words ‘Fritz Hansen’ and ‘Egg Chair’ go hand-in-hand, paired together almost unprompted, the brand’s iconic cocoon-like seat admired around the world. Now there’s a cracking new addition to the famous family – introducing the Egg Table, an original Arne Jacobsen design created in 1952 and back with a bang for its 70th birthday.
I
t’s time to look north, as our favourite Nordic brands launch a flurry of new designs demonstrating their woodworking prowess as well as their impressive furniture making legacy. Launched and exhibited at 3daysofdesign, the oh-so-chic design show which takes places across Copenhagen’s stylish showrooms and spaces each year. There was also a bevy of big birthdays as brands and individual objects demonstrated their staying power with celebratory launches, with many out-ofproduction pieces joining our homes once again. 2022’s new pieces didn’t stick to a trend, with colours, finishes and inspirations varying wildly – what united them was an adulation for natural materials and future-facing, sustainable choices. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of Scandinavia’s best.
Gubi
Capturing the interior world’s on-going love affair with all things natural, crafted and with alluringly rounded edges, Gubi’s Basket seating collection ticks all of the 2022 boxes. Created by Joe Colombo and first produced in the late 1960s and out of production for decades, the design interprets his signature futuristic and modernist aesthetic in classic handwoven rattan basketry with a precision steel skeleton, a spirited blend of the artisanal and the industrial. 78 AUGUST 2022
Carl Hansen & Son
Living up to its namesake letter, the T Dining Chair designed by Ole Wanscher in 1958 has been relaunched, lightly refreshed with modernday proportions and retaining the typographical elegance of the original model. Dependant on fine craft skills, the linear design commands many hours of carpentry to achieve its signature smooth lines and tight curves, the T-shaped backrest merging seamlessly with the duo of back legs to create a three-legged feel that speaks of practicality and usefulness as well as the alphabet.
Menu
A supremely sculptural take on timber, the Eclipse Desk by Fred Rigby honours nature, resulting in roundness that tempts touch and makes sitting down to a day’s work something to look forward to. A convivial celebration of the asymmetric, its supportive steel column leg hides a multitude of cable-storage sins, fitted with a lifting lid to reveal slender hidden space. Now available in natural
oak and painted black steel as well as all-over black, the two-tone material contrast gracefully juxtaposing the manufactured with the organic and instilling a sense of calm.
Cane-Line
Known for the stylish outdoor furniture and accessories it has dedicated itself to for more than 30 years, Cane-Line is taking cover, moving indoors for the first time with the launch of two modular sofa concepts which stray away from its archetypal aesthetic of modern rattan and weaves. The collection’s buzz word is flexible, the Scale sofa, designed by byKATO created with adaptation in mind, each piece ready to cater to various lounging needs, desires, spaces and situations.
Louis Poulsen
A majestic entry into the eco-product charts, the PH 5 Retake is made from recycled Louis Poulsen PH 5 lamps that have issues such as dents or irregularities. The imperfect lamps, from vintage to new-but-imperfect, are stripped back to their steel core, leaving a tactile raw surface exposed before being fitted with the latest lighting technology. Left over time they’ll develop unique patinas which tell their new story.
HOUSE OF FINN JUHL
Verpan
Re-introducing Verpan’s Easy sofa, one of Verner Panton’s most distinctive designs. Created in 1964, its circular shape, intriguing backrests and sculptural quality sliding right into the 2022 aesthetic. Poised upon a double layer of upholstered discs, its u-shaped backrests form four individual seats as well as working as armrests, and can be upholstered in a wide range of fabrics and colours, from the statement to the soothing. Find each of these new launches, and more, at chaplins. co.uk, and explore the wider collection both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London.
Originally designed by Finn Juhl in 1948, The Whiskey chair has returned, a stately seat designed to invite – tempt? – its owner to indulge in a little me time. Crafted from rich American walnut, its gloriously smooth frame houses upholstery as well as a fold out handmade brass tray designed specifically to hold a glass or two of its namesake liquor. The revived chair comes complete with an exquisite whiskey glass mouth-blown by Danish glassmaker Mikkel Yerst.
Fredericia
A chair in continuous production since its design in 1947 and one of the best-selling wooden chairs in Danish history, the J39 by Børge Mogensen has had a sustainable makeover for its 75th anniversary. Fredericia is marking the occasion by returning to the seat’s material origins – hand-woven sedge grass, which for the first time since it was conceived comprises the seat, a highly sustainable material, the grass grows rapidly as well as lending the chair a rich texture and an almost Mediterranean mood.

British-led design preserves Belgravia coach house style
A
“This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s exacting requirements”
bespoke up and over garage door beautifully designed and manufactured by Rundum Meir has brought 21st century functionality, access and security to a Grade II listed property in London’s exclusive Belgravia. One objective of the renovation project by RDB Architecture & Interiors sought to provide improved access to the garage of the property, which is located on one of the capital’s most desirable residential streets close to Eaton Square Gardens. This had to be done in a way that was sympathetic to the local architecture and compliant with the house’s listed status. The garage doors of the properties lining this cobblestone street are fine examples of the 19th century coach house tradition. Hence, any attempt to dramatically alter the external appearance of the doors would be detrimental to the elegant appeal of this upmarket neighbourhood and flatly refused by council planners. This was the ideal project for Rundum Meir, who custom manufacture every one of their garage doors to a suit a project’s exacting requirements. Here, the client brief was to retain the look of the existing swing opening garage door, but enable up and over automated functionality for improved access and to make best use of the available space. A timber engineered door was the solution, finished in traditional black and complete with the original heavy cast iron Charles Collinge hinges. The door was manufactured by Rundum Meir’s skilled craftsmen at its factory in Germany, who also designed and built the overhead mechanism to comfortably accommodate 80 AUGUST 2022
its significant weight. Once manufactured, the garage door was weighed to enable the design of the correct spring counterbalance system and deliver many years of reliable operation. Danesch Missaghian, owner manager at Rundum Meir (UK) said: “The coach house is one of the most defining features of the British Victorian mews house, so it is vital that we preserve this tradition whilst making such properties suitable for today’s world. In being able to manufacture every garage door to meet very specific requirements, satisfying planners in the process, our customers do not have to make compromises as the bespoke up and over door at this property in Belgravia clearly demonstrates.” All Rundum Meir garage doors are designed here in the UK, manufactured in Germany and transported to the UK for assembly in readiness for installation. Every door is manufactured using the highest quality materials such as solid timber and tough extruded aluminium which can be insulated. To achieve the best possible garage door solution, architects in the UK, as well as across Europe and in the USA, can take advantage of Rundum Meir’s specialist design advice and expert technical support to help turn design concepts into reality.

UK’s leading garden centre showcases how to bring some Hollywood Hills allure to your home
W
hether you’re Team Christine, or Chrishell all the way, Selling Sunset season 5 has us all talking, and one thing’s for certain; the homes just keep getting better. From sprawling mansions in the Hollywood Hills to beachfront properties with spectacular infinity pools, the latest season of Netflix’s hit show is making us long for summer days 84 AUGUST 2022

spent outdoors, and Dobbies, not your average garden centre, has spotlighted ways in which we can bring a touch of the Sunset glamour to our very own homes. Research commissioned by Dobbies found that 35% of Brits are planning to create an outdoor social area this spring, with 39% planning a social themed garden, so Dobbies’ Stylist, Rebecca Stanton, chats through how you can style your space and give it an Oppenheim upgrade, just in time for summer.
CLEAN LINES
One of the features that most homes on the show have in common is clean lines and a sleek overall design; something Rebecca notes is easy to recreate in your own garden. Rebecca said: “Most of the multimillion dollar homes on Selling Sunset have a bright and airy contemporary aesthetic, full of sharp lines and light fabrics. The patios that spill out from these homes are often kept simple, with neutral furniture and defined angles that carry the modern theme throughout all areas of the home. To achieve this look in your own garden, invest in a sleek furniture set in a cool shade of grey and pair it with complementing accessories in neutral tones. Block colours work better than patterns to make an impact, and don’t be afraid to mix cool and warm shades, as this can help add dimension and structure to a space.”
SHOWSTOPPING LOUNGERS
Nothing says LA more than soaking up the sun by a gorgeous pool. While we might not all be lucky enough to have a pool of our own, Rebecca says loungers are the perfect choice for your garden to add some Selling Sunset flair. Rebecca said: “A chic lounger is the perfect way to turn your garden into a relaxation sanctuary and will give your space a similar look to Chrishell’s intimate garden on the show. Take a leaf out of Chrishell’s book and create an outdoor haven in your garden by nestling your lounger in amongst a jungle of different plants. To amp up the R&R, style some lanterns or candles amongst your display for a cosy look and feel.”
KEEP IT NEUTRAL
A sure-fire way to get the polished 90210 look is to keep things classic with neutral tones and beachy materials. Ideal for spaces of all shapes and sizes, Rebecca said: “Whatever kind of space you’re working with, you can get the luxe Selling Sunset look by layering calming tones and light textures. The combination of neutral furniture and pale wood is popular on the show and recreating this in your garden will give your outdoor area an elegant Beverly Hills vibe. Keep accessories simple and classic for a cohesive, put-together effect that will add a touch of class to any balcony, garden, or patio.” 86 AUGUST 2022
INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING
Undoubtedly the most showstopping aspect of the homes on Selling Sunset is the incredible views, which is why so many of the realtors place high importance on outdoor living. A great way to incorporate the California lifestyle into your own home is by adding a sleek dining set that will allow you to enjoy meals alfresco. Speaking about outdoor dining, Rebecca said: “Adding a dining set to your garden is a fantastic way to make the most of your outdoor space as we approach the warmer months. Alfresco dining taps into the trend of blurring the line between indoors and out, something the Selling Sunset homes are known for, however, you don’t need floorto-ceiling windows or bi-fold doors to create a flow from home to garden. Simply incorporate seasonal throws and cushions into your outdoor space and it’ll feel like a natural extension of your home – an easy way to get the LA look without spending millions!” For more styling inspiration, and to browse Dobbies’ full outdoor living range for SS22, visit dobbies.com.

ooking forward to autumn, it’s one of the loveliest times to be a gardener. The beauty of plants; their shapes, their foliage, and their natural colours, can be classed as a form of art this season. There is a whole other world of gardening possibilities after summer flowers have faded, your garden can still be enjoyed with planted container displays. And once the sun goes down, the enjoyment can continue by creating an al fresco lounge space– an extension of your home where you can relax and socialise. We take a look at how you can create the finest autumn displays and extend the season for friends and family.
Autumn Potscaping
Potscaping, quite simply, is landscaping with pots. This element is often used in garden design and is ideal for smaller gardens where a focal point or impact is needed. Potscaping also offers an easy way to add colour to a home’s exterior without digging or weeding in flower borders. By grouping large containers by different sizes, and different colours, powerful and colourful displays can be achieved 94 AUGUST 2022
easily and effectively throughout autumn. We recommend that you choose containers that are different sizes but complement each other in terms of shape, design and material. Our range of large terracotta pots is the ideal material to consider for a cottage garden. Why not plant in our Julius XXL Planter which is available in three sizes, evoking a romantic and traditional feel with its autumn colours palette, filled with heucheras and seasonal blooms gently swaying in the breeze with bees and butterflies drifting delicately from planter to planter. Great potscaping also means turning ordinary plantings into extraordinary ones. Always follow the Thriller, Filler and Spiller method for the wow factor in your potscape. Great plant displays include a “thriller,” a tall plant usually with strong colour and structure, a “filler,” plants that fill the space hiding the soil and a “spiller” that cascades over the rim of the pot. We love using focal shrubs in the Ancient Collection Extra Large Glazed Plant Pot like cordyline with its bright, spiky foliage. Dwarf conifers with their erect, evergreen sprays are ideal to add

The statuesque stems and red hot Kniphofia, under-planted with autumn bedding, perennials and small shrubs will guarantee to illuminate any potscape.
Fire it up
As the weather cools and the nights draw in, it’s time to get your garden, yard or patio into shape as you embrace the autumn evenings. An outdoor fire pit is the latest must-have accessory for your garden and ideal for evening socialising with friends and family. Whether it be a wood-burning fire pit or gas fire pit, it provides the perfect finishing touch to your alfresco area. “Their buildings are undoubtedly the best that money can buy” -Lord Alan Sugar
A luxury wooden gazebo from Crown Pavilions creates a unique space in heart of your garden where you can entertain friends, cook, serve sumptuous suppers and party long into the night. Or, if you prefer the quieter life, a blissful space where you can relax over breakfast, laze away a summer’s afternoon or simply sit back and enjoy a good book. There are 14 models to choose from, for gardens of every size and shape. They all come with dining and lounging furniture and luxurious soft furnishings as standard. The marine grade canvas side blinds offer protection and flexibility – they can be dropped down and zipped together during inclement weather and rolled them up in the sunshine. You can also customise your cushion and blind colours to taste, add heating and even upgrade with a woodfired oven for larger models.
Garden Rooms – Insulated garden offices, gyms, bars, cinemas, teenage dens and more…
A Crown Pavilions insulated garden room, built to residential standards is for those seeking additional living space. However, unlike a bricks and mortar extension a garden room can be built in just a few short weeks and in many cases planning permission is not 98 AUGUST 2022
required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multi-functional space”, adds Luke Dejahang. The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home.
