THE CONNAUGHT GRILL THE LEGENDARY RESTAURANT CELEBRATES THE WINTER SEASON AT THE CONNAUGHT, MAYFAIR

T

he Connaught Grill is one of London’s most celebrated restaurants and home to the original power players of the capital. The restaurant has a respectful nod to its distinguished heritage, but with a contemporary interpretation in both the design and cuisine. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the corridor walls display one-of-a-kind vintages of wines and champagnes from Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée Conti to Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises, and works of art by design masters Louise Bourgeois, Idris Khan and Le Corbusier. The 46-seat restaurant is a showcase of contemporary creativity and craftsmanship. The open kitchen allows guests to see chefs cook on a theatrical wood-burning grill and rotisserie. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten pays homage to classic grill dining, but with his own signature twists of modernity, and using ingredients with the finest provenance. For the best of British comfort, a Sunday Roast is presented and carved on the restored silver trolley from the original Grill, wild seabass en croute is a ceremonious pastry-enrobed showstopper, carved tableside in true old-school Connaught style. Ensuring balance, light and vegetarian, dishes include shaved brussels sprouts salad topped with an organic fried egg, raw diver scallop served in the shell and wild mushroom salad with a herbal pine nut dressing. Sashimi, oysters and langoustines are served spectacularly on vast bowls of ice. Traditional British favourites also appear on the dessert menu, overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Jerome Beraudo, including

The magnificent British sourced Premier Nordmann tree, stands 31ft tall on Carlos Place and is bedecked with 102 circular neon white hoops, illuminating the streets of Mayfair. She regularly uses circular motive in her artistic practise and this tree is no exception, highlighting a symbol of hope this Christmas. Commenting on her creation, Rachel Whiteread mentioned “I love the tradition of Christmas trees, whether at home with our chaotic scramble of worn-out ornaments and lights or the beautiful trees put in public spaces. I chose to use circles of light – a motif that I have used before. I love the simplicity of the idea, the light illuminating

CLARIDGE’S UNVEILS IT’S LOUIS VUITTON

CHRISTMAS TREE 2023

C

laridge’s, London’s legendary Mayfair hotel, has unveiled its muchanticipated annual Christmas tree, designed by Louis Vuitton. Longtime friend of the hotel, Louis Vuitton unveiled their creation in the hotel lobby, bringing together two illustrious names, both of whom have long celebrated the Art of Travel, and crossed paths throughout their respective histories after both being founded in 1854. The Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2023 by Louis Vuitton is a magnificent sculptural creation immersed within two large open, emblematic Malles Vestiaire or ‘Wardrobe Trunks’ towering on top of each other at the height of 5.2 metres. Each signature trunk is adorned with Claridge’s travel stickers of yesteryear and an oversized Louis Vuitton luggage tag. As an avid collector and traveller, Gaston-Louis Vuitton (Louis Vuitton’s grandson) amassed hotel stickers throughout his life and would often place them onto his luggage as mementos. Exuding a festive charm, the tree is composed of 15 vertically placed chrome repurposed trunks of varying heights that tower to create the silhouette of a traditional Christmas tree and reflect the Art Deco architecture. Taking centre stage at the peak of the tree is Asnières, the historic Louis Vuitton family home and atelier. Famously located on the riverbanks of Paris, Asnières is the heart of the Maison’s creation and home to the original the Louis Vuitton wardrobe trunk. Scattered atop the silver trunks and amidst the snowy landscape of the tree are 21 Louis Vuitton Vivienne mascots, including Father Christmas himself, all found within Claridge’s distinguished black and white marbled lobby. The hotel’s Louis Vuitton trunk envelopes the magical Claridge’s Christmas Tree, just as the Maison’s iconic wardrobe trunk, a hard-sided case created in 1875, was dedicated to transporting one’s most personal and precious effects. The Claridge’s Christmas Tree has long been a seasonal London landmark and symbolises the start of the festive season in the capital. This is the thirteenth year Claridge’s has invited a distinguished fashion house and friend to reinterpret the tree in its own distinctive style. t. Pancras International has unveiled its much-loved and highly anticipated Christmas Tree, in partnership with Hatchards, the UK’s oldest bookshop and one of the station’s many iconic retailers. Lighting up the station and bringing an abundance of festive cheer to London, the 2023 Christmas Tree is inspired by the magical ability of both books and train travel to transport people to exciting new places. Standing at 12 metres tall, the Christmas tree features a winding staircase, wrapping around 270 shelves with an impressive array of more than 3,800 books, which have been hand-painted and inscribed with titles of Christmas Classics such as Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” and many more. Within the tree, there are eight cubby holes where children and

families to learn about our Excellent rated (ISI) schools and to hear directly from their students. Each department offers workshops and activities for prospective students to join in from science experiments to Dickens challenges to geography fieldwork. For those interested in sport, families can watch their football and basketball teams in action, watch the swim team train, challenge their Esports lap times or take part in agility challenges whilst performing arts enthusiasts partake in their musical theatre session. They encourage parents to go with a list of questions and an idea of who they want to speak with such as department heads. They can request meetings with representatives for areas such as pastoral, boarding, co-curricular, super-curricular academics, sport, and creative arts when they book or when they arrive. If parents or future students can’t make an open day, the admissions staff are more than happy to take tours Mondays to Fridays during office hours, both in and out of term time. Taster days can be arranged for interested students to experience a typical day and to make sure the school is right for them. They also have a virtual 360 tour (qe.org/home/admissions/virtualvisit-hub) that can be accessed at any time. For more information visit their website, qe.org or email admissions@qe.org. ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE LONDON’S MOST PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL PREPARING STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW’S WORLD

S

t Dunstan’s College, south London, has championed a progressive approach to education for over a century, with the opening vision of the school in 1888 being to provide a curriculum ‘in advance of the present time.’ The school’s first Head, Charles Maddock Stuart, was a pioneer in heuristic education, stating that it is not so much what a child knows that is important but more how (he) comes to know it – a revolutionary concept for the time. St Dunstan’s was one of the first schools in the country to have science and technology laboratories built to service a curriculum with significant time devoted to handson scientific and practical experiments. Today, St Dunstan’s modern senior school curriculum builds on the legacy of its founding Heads. Students enter the school embarking on a Renaissance education, studying a deliberately wide range of academic subjects whilst proactively developing skills and thinking that will support them for life, and committing to a variety of co-curricular activities in a programme that is embedded into the timetable and structured around the College’s values. The school, led by Nick Hewlett, believes that this classically liberal education

promotes a lifetime of inquisitive independence, allowing young people to approach new and challenging concepts with courage and conviction and to be best equipped for an uncertain future. ‘Our world is changing at breakneck speed. A truly globalised future dominated by AI and biotechnology will require different skills and attributes from the young people we are educating today,’ Head Nick Hewlett explains. ‘Our social values are more precious to us than ever before, and so are they under threat, as we inhabit a society where the art of rhetoric has diminished and the polarised, entrenched view has consumed us, amplified as it is through the platform of globalised cyberspace. We have a duty to respond to this in the curriculum we offer.’ Earlier this year, the school was named the ‘Most progressive independent school in London’ at the Private Education Awards 2023. Last year, St Dunstan’s was also named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Awards in London, which are known as the Oscars of education. St Dunstan’s offers a variety of scholarships and bursaries for students joining at 7+, 11+ and 16+. Find out more at stdunstans.org.uk

SECURITY

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.

W

ith Christmas just around the corner, the festivities are in full swing. The decorations will soon be up and present shopping complete, but do not neglect your personal and property security during this busy period. Organised and opportunist thieves take full advantage of the festive shopping frenzy, with you and your house being top of their list! Christmas sees a peak in home and business burglaries with the long winter nights, particularly in more affluent areas. With the ever-increasing crime rates and vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, homeowners must take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security. One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or

residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political, and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary and robbery be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax-deductible business expense. In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors, gates, and windows. Keep presents and your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends, such as the use of social media by criminals to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect your home and assets, you can help ensure the safety and security of your family and possessions, gaining peace of mind which comes with good security awareness and measures. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Professional | Approachable | Bespoke

Focus On: Facelifts With age, the face loses volume and support, so the skin can start to sag particularly around the cheeks, jawline and neck. Sun damage can cause wrinkles and change skin pigmentation. Face lift surgery removes excess skin whilst tightening the structural architecture beneath, to leave the contours supported and smoother.

Who is it for?

It is most appropriate for adults (typically over the age of 45) with lower facial sagging.

Why get surgery?

A facelift provides a longer term solution for sagging and wrinkled skin. The scars are hidden in the natural folds of the skin around the ear. For many people surgery is explored because they are unhappy with the way their skin is ageing which impacts their self confidence and quality of life.

What are the types of surgery?

A face lift is tailored bespokely to the needs of the individual. Sometimes there is also a need to address the eyelids and/or neck at the same time and/or use combined techniques that include fat transfer to increase volume and injections to relieve muscular tension. Sometimes nonsurgical manoeuvres can delay the need for surgical intervention. Chris Abela is an experienced reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon. He prides himself on providing each individual with a professional, bespoke and compassionate approach with gentle bedside manner and discretion at the heart of every consultation. He has clinics at 84 Harley Street, 102 Sydney Street, Chelsea and at Wimbledon Parkside.

High-shine lip colours are all the rage on social media. By Katie Wright.

A

ccording to beauty buffs on TikTok, it’s time to ditch the heavy lipstick and swap your gooey gloss for a slick lip oil. Make-up influencers have been posting videos raving about their favourite shades (and fruity scents), comparing brands and hunting for designer dupes, with clips racking up millions of views. “I think the texture is new to a lot of people who are fed up with sticky balms and glosses, and want something more low-key but still with a great colour and finish,” says Ciara O’Shea, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Proshine. “They are also great for people that would have traditionally stayed away from lip colour or were too scared of it.” Unlike the highly pigmented glosses that have been popular with Gen Z over the past couple of years, lip oils tend to offer a more subtle ‘your lips but better’ colour pay-off – or no pigment at all, in the case of clear oils. “They are an elevated alternative to the Y2K-inspired lip glosses and provide a nourishing treatment,” says Jamie Genevieve, makeup artist and founder of VIEVE. “Lip oils also offer a beautiful, natural wash of colour, which complements the ‘clean make-up’ aesthetic that has been trending for a while on TikTok.” Jamie Coombes, Dior UK pro make-up artist, says that rave reviews are a big driver of cosmetic sales: “The power of social media is mighty and when a product’s formula, packaging and results fit the expectations, it makes it a winner!” 76 DECEMBER 2023

What’s the difference between lip oil and gloss? “Lip oils offer the effects and results of both lip gloss and lip balm,” says Coombes. “It is a richer texture that penetrates quicker and deeper for instantly nourished lips.” If you love the shiny, plumppout look but struggle with gloopy glosses, try a lip oil, Genevieve says: “Unlike a balm or gloss, a lip oil is lightweight and nonsticky.” What’s the best way to wear lip oil? “Lip oils are very versatile,” says Genevieve. “They can be worn on their own for an everyday, ‘off-duty’ look or layered over liner and lipstick to add a high-shine finish to elevate a dramatic lip.” She recommends the best-selling VIEVE Lip Dew in the Original shade: “Clear with a golden multi-dimensional finish, it’s incredibly flattering when worn on its own and looks beautiful layered with your go-to lipstick shade.” Lip oils can also double up as an eye gloss, O’Shea says: “I like to use it liberally on my lips and then pop a little on my eyelids and cheeks to have a uniform colour and texture in my make-up look.” She’s a big fan of one of the OG ranges: “Clarins has been top of the lip-oil game forever. I’ve been using them for years. They come in a variety of the best colours that suit everyone.” While shimmery gold and silver oils are on the rise this summer, the bestselling shades of the TikTok-famous Dior Addict Lip Glow Oil are all punchy pinks. “The most popular and my personal ‘go-to’ colours are Pink, Rosewood and Cherry, which are gorgeous and suit all skin tones,” Coombes says. “Lip oil is not just a trend – it’s a beauty musthave and can suit every make-up preference.”

BABY DIOR

SPRING 2024 COLLECTION

78 DECEMBER 2023

F

or the Baby Dior Spring 2024 line, Cordelia de Castellane pays a wonderful tribute to all the world’s mothers. A celebration of this precious bond and of those powerful women who, every day, strive to provide a surge of life, of joy: a cocoon of gentleness. Reflecting the many facets of motherhood, this three-part narrative reveals a first – entitled Madre Dior – inspired by the creative energy of Mexico. In a captivating play of contrasts, looks are created on which delicate patterns and vibrant colors blossom. Returning to her literary explorations, Baby Dior’s Creative Director also chose to honor Marcel Proust’s mother, whom the author fondly remembers in the first volume of his iconic novel, À la Recherche du Temps Perdu*. A series of models are dressed in velvet or tulle, enhanced by touches of glittering sequins, while some outfits are adorned with a large bow, a subtle reference to the Odette dress designed by Christian Dior for the Dior haute couture autumnwinter 1953-1954 collection. This typically Parisian elegance is also reflected in the Madeleine universe – evoking the founding-couturier’s mother – and revisits the House’s symbols, from the emblematic toile de Jouy – reinterpreted in a Toile de Jouy Paris print – to the CD Diamond and the timeless Bar jacket. An experience imbued with tenderness and poetry, a promise of unforgettable moments of complicity. *Published in 1913 by Editions Grasset. V&A PRESENTS THE UK’S FIRST DEDICATED EXHIBITION

GABRIELLE CHANEL: FASHION MANIFESTO THE SAINSBURY GALLERY, 16 SEPTEMBER 2023 – 25 FEBRUARY 2024

T

he first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charts the evolution of her iconic design style and the establishment of the House of CHANEL - from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971. Featuring over 200 looks seen together for the first time, as well as accessories, perfumes and jewellery, the exhibition will explore Chanel’s pioneering approach to fashion design, which paved the way for a new elegance and continues to influence the way women dress today. Highlights will include one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments from 1916; original costumes designed by Chanel for the Ballets Russes production of Le Train Bleu in 1924; outfits created for Hollywood stars Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich; an early example of Chanel’s groundbreaking evening trousers and ensembles from Chanel’s final collection of 1971. Chanel designed first and foremost for herself. By creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman. The exhibition will explore Chanel’s

innovative approach to fabric, silhouette and construction, and will examine how she drafted a new framework for fashion in the twentieth century. Showcasing a stunning array of some of Chanel’s most notable designs from her sixty years in fashion, the exhibition analyses her professional career, the emergence and the development of her style, and her contribution to the history of fashion.

Through ten themed sections, Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto will showcase the exquisite skill and innovation from the founder of the House of CHANEL: Towards A New Elegance offers an introduction to the beginning of Gabrielle Chanel’s career as a milliner, opening her first boutique in Paris in 1910. FASHION & BEAUTY OUT & ABOUT

business enabled her expansion into clothing and will feature one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments, characterised by minimalism and precision – laying the foundations of her design principles. The Emergence of a Style focuses on how Chanel developed an immediately identifiable signature style in the 1920s and 1930s. With clean lines, fluid materials and a simplistic colour palette, her understated designs were radical in their practicality yet displayed a refined elegance. This section also includes Chanel’s British influences and business ventures, and her creations worn on the theatre stage and silver screen. The Invisible Accessory showcases the creation and impact of Gabrielle Chanel’s debut perfume No.5 which became the world’s best-selling fragrance. Chanel made No.5 the signature of her fashion house. This section will also explore the launch of Chanel’s range of make-up in 1924 and skincare in 1927. Luxury and Line focuses on how Chanel’s eveningwear demonstrated a refined mix of inventiveness and classicism which subtly accentuated the female form- harmonising proportions and materials to create garments which expressed elegance, freedom and simplicity. This section will also look at “Bijoux de Diamants”, her first and only 1932 collection of fine jewellery commissioned by the International Diamond Corporation of London. Closing the House will outline the impact of the outbreak of war in 1939 on her personal and professional life. The exhibition will continue with Chanel’s official Return to Fashion on 5 February 82 DECEMBER 2023

1954, featuring the signature hallmarks that she had so successfully introduced during the 1920s and 1930s. The Suit will spotlight the defining garment of Gabrielle Chanel’s post-war contribution to fashion, with over fifty ensembles on display. A declaration of her vision of modern femininity, the Chanel suit combined ease and comfort with simplicity and style. Described by Vogue in 1964 as “the world’s prettiest uniform,” the Chanel suit, which has since become a timeless classic, remains a staple reference for fashion today. Chanel Codes will focus on how accessories were fundamental to Chanel’s conception of a harmonious silhouette. They reflected her pragmatic vision of fashion and provided recognisable codes which underlined the unity of her style. Since the 1950s, the Chanel 2.55 handbag and two-tone slingback shoes have become two of the most enduring accessories in the world of fashion. Into the Evening showcases eveningwear as an important part of Chanel’s couture collections in the latter part of her career. From the late 1950s onwards, she adapted her suits to include a range to be worn into the evening. These cocktail suits followed the same form as her day suits, realised in a plethora of richly decorative fabrics such as gold and silver lamés, textured weaves and intricately patterned silks. A Chanel Hallmark will explore this essential part of Gabrielle Chanel’s distinct style. Rejecting the conventions of fine jewels, Chanel gave costume jewellery a new status. From the early 1920s, Chanel’s boutiques offered a dazzling range of costume jewellery to wear with her sleek fashionable garments. Timeless Allure – the exhibition finale – celebrates the evening dress as Chanel’s exercise in style. She proposed a relaxed version of the formal dress that was both discreet and refined. This section will showcase that right up until her final collection of Spring-Summer 1971. Gabrielle Chanel reinterpreted, updated and perfected her rules and principles, continuously refining her quintessential style. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit vam.ac.uk/chanel

Reasons the sofa is the most important

T

hink of one thing, anything, in an archetypal living room... Yes, we’re picturing a sofa too. Some pieces of furniture hold within them the power to transform. The sofa is one of these magical, room-changing design objects. It’s not just because they take up the most space or the alluring way they look, but how they make us feel and behave. The sofa epitomises tranquillity and switching-off. It’s committed to comfort, restfulness and unwinding - a physical declaration of me time, our time, down time, and nap time. The presence of a sofa brings the remainder of the living area together. The sofa needs an armchair or two. Now they need a rug. Next is a coffee table. What about a floor lamp? The sofa comes first; it pulls items around it into a group, serving as an anchor for the entire room, acting as the sun around which everything else revolves and draws energy from. Take a seat as we explore the sometimes surprising reasons that sofas are so uniquely impactful within the home, and the multifaceted roles the modern sofa plays. We’ll delve into the emotion tucked into the cushions and upholstery, and discover how these seemingly simple pieces of furniture can shape our daily routines, host our most intimate conversations, and serve as supportive witnesses to our unfolding lives.

1 – Sofas Add Style and Character

As the largest furniture piece in a living room – an upholstered elephant in the room – the sofa automatically draws the eye. It contributes hugely to the aesthetic and feel, and can set the tone for the area’s overall style. The colour, upholstery and decorative choices of the modern sofa can be the defining elements that 94 DECEMBER 2023

“Design and shape are just as important as the upholstery, with curves, angles, legs, arms and backs all narrating the style and story of the piece”

breathe life into a space – contemporary, colourful designs exuding modernity and energy, while classic forms in neutral palettes radiate timeless elegance and sophistication. Design and shape are just as important as the upholstery, with curves, angles, legs, arms and backs all narrating the style and story of the piece. These structural foundations can convey a sense of formality or familiarity, telling you whether to curl up and get cosy or sit upright for an official tete-a-tete, and turn the sofa into a beautiful sculptural object as well as a practical piece of seating. Pay attention to details like the legs, trim, and stitching, as these small-yet-significant touches often contribute to a high-quality, luxury feel, serving as a testament to the craft skills that went into creating the piece, as well as enhancing the design’s overall appearance to give the seat a distinctive and luxurious edge.

piece of furniture Sofas invite a finishing flourish for that extra flair. A contemporary sofa doesn’t feel complete without a selection of decorative cushions or a cosy throw positioned to be close at hand. Be they in colours, patterns or textures complementary to the body of the sofa and/or the room as a whole, or in contrasting styles, these little extras not only bring visual interest but also a personal touch to the piece making your sofa stylish, characterful and truly one-of-a-kind.

2 – Sofas Shape the Room’s Layout

As the main focal point in a room, a sofa’s placement significantly influences the space’s overall layout and dictates where people naturally gather. Whether placed against a wall or floating in the centre, a sofa’s positioning directs where people walk through the room as well as defining how light and air flow. The sofa is also vital to floor plans, its large size enabling it to divide rooms and create internal zones for different activities including living, dining, cooking or working. Other living furniture bows to the sofa, arranged in accordance to where it first settles. Accompanying pieces, such as coffee tables, side tables and lighting, follow and complement the sofa’s placement, building on it to create a balanced, functional space. The sofa’s orientation guides sitters’ attention to various views such as guests on the other side of the room, spots of natural light, or focal points like fireplaces, artwork, or Netflix’s latest must-watch. It’s not just about where you sit or what you’re sitting on; it’s about the world the sofa opens up for you to explore without even standing up. Now, the big question – should the sofa be against the wall or free- floating within the room? It all depends on the size of the area, and what you’re trying to achieve. A flush-to-the-wall set up can create an intimate, protected feel, while a floating seat helps to define open space and fosters a sense of fluidity.

aspects, so each sofa can be rearranged and configured to suit the space it’s in and the function needed from it. These designs can spread through rooms and around corners to create expansive, sociable seating areas as well as form compact loveseats and single person chairs. Interchangeable modules can be added such as: hard surfaces and storage, footstools, and different shaped arms or backs to meet multiple ever-changing needs. The style of the sofa can now also be edited, with pieces often available in a huge library of different colours, textures, materials and patterns to suit a wide range of interiors, and with smaller elements such as legs and cushions easily swappable for alternates. The modern sofa has become an expression of individuality, the same base design adaptable to create options spanning a highbacked sleek leather and chrome L shape to a low-slung floral and timber two-seater, offering limitless possibilities for tailoring its style and coordinating its look with diverse tastes and interior aesthetics. chaplins.co.uk

3 – Sofas Are Mega Versatile

As the sofa has evolved from a formal place to perch to a multifunctional piece of everyday furniture, we have demanded more and more from it. It should be somewhere to slump, curl up and get cosy. It should support the back and arms. It should offer sleeping opportunities. Storage should be nearby, perhaps integrated? It should be snuggly. It should be cooling. It should create personal space. It should bring people together. The list goes on and on and on. The result? The modern sofa is the epitome of versatility, with modular designs becoming increasingly popular for their customisable DECEMBER 2023 95

“They stand out from the crowd as they creates restorative spaces, which they call “City Sanctuaries” to combat the stressful city living”

he prestigious Surface Design Award had announced their finalists in November. With the topic of Mindful Living, it is not surprising that they have selected the Wave Residence of Fourteen A.M. Ltd. as one of their finalists. Fourteen A.M. is an architectural and interior design firm. They stand out from the crowd as they creates restorative spaces, which they call “City Sanctuaries” to combat the stressful city living. We asked founder Winnie Tam how this is achieved, and she told us about their Mindful Design Method, where they develop the design with their client in an organic way. “The key is to spend time to truly understand our clients”, said Tam, “the design is always half ours and half the clients’. The better we understand them, the better we can design for them. We call this Mindful Design, as we find they this journey actually helps our client to get to know themselves better.” Their project Wave Residence is a great example to showcase Fourteen A.M.’s effortlessly elegant design aesthetic. Clay-plaster and timber throughout, the entire interior gives a calming harmony that slow your heart rate as soon as you step in. Winnie also explained to me how she designed these “intentional moments” to

96 DECEMBER 2023

display art and nature collections. She believes in the harmony of architecture, interior design, furniture and objects: a wall insect was designed in to house a bespoke painting made for the residence; a mini timber latch is designed to showcase owner’s nature collection. What also made Fourteen A.M. unique is there holistic approach, where they follow the project from start to finish. Founder Winnie said the modern approach of designer delivering packages means there can be no continuity in the project, what’s worse is that no designer / consultant would take ownership to the job. I can understand what she mean looking at the harmony they created at Wave Residence. We wish them best of luck in the Surface Design Award, and look forward to seeing their City Sanctuaries grow and spread. fourteen-am.com

THE ECO TILE & PAINT EDIT: Sustainable Picks From Ca’ Pietra

10 4 DECEMBER 2023

Sustainable and proud, that’s what these six picks say loudly and clearly. Whether your home is a haven for all things consciously sourced or you’re someone trying to do that bit more, the Ca’ Pietra collection has got you covered. From carbon-neutral tiles created in cutting edge workshops to reclaimed tiles giving materials a second chance at life, we’re always looking at ways to make our tiles as eco as possible. Who’s with us? Head of Creative, Grazzie Wilson, takes a look at her top picks.. Natural Stone Everything The OG tile material, natural stone is a classic, and a complete superstar when it comes to sustainability. It’s about longevity and the whole-life carbon impact natural stone tiles have on the planet – typically very little. Natural stone tiles – slate, marble, limestone, terracotta and the such – last the course in every respect. They’re solid, they’re sturdy, they won’t let you down, and they always, always look good. Timeless is the word, and once laid, they can stay in place for a lifetime and longer. Ultimately, natural stone tiles are there to make a stand to throw-away culture, so lay them on floors, run them up walls and take them to your garden with planet-friendly pride.

“The Ca’ Pietra collection has got you covered. From carbon-neutral tiles created in cutting edge workshops to reclaimed tiles giving materials a second chance at life”

Our Recycled Reform Collection 36 tactile tiles make up our game-changing Reform collection, all made from 60% recycled stone content AND, to make them more sustainable still, in a carbon-neutral factory. These are double-whammy do-good tiles. They were soon snapped up by the likes of planet-conscious fashion brand Rixo who used two pastel Reform tiles in a chequerboard across

their flagship store in London. Three sizes, 12 shades, and ready to be used across walls and floors, Reform is proof that sustainability looks and feels good. Planet-kind Pumice Terrazzo Tiles don’t get more chic than Italian-style terrazzo, whether the natural version of a porcelain ode to terrazzo like the Pumice collection. With two neutral versions to choose from, this micro collection contributes to the sustainability crusade by its make-up – 40% of which is from recycled materials. Recycled Glass Tiles from Brasserie Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone – they’re the goto materials you first think of in the world of tiles. But don’t go forgetting the underdog – glass tiles. Our Brasserie glass tiles are crafted not just from any glass, but recycled glass, meaning there’s no demand on the planet for extra materials to be sourced or formed, making use of what’s already out there and breathing new (and beautiful life) right back into it. “Already doing good by being a natural stone tile, to tile with terracotta is to already tread sustainable step” are richly colored and that glimmer gorgeously on walls and floors? YES PLEASE. Rich and Reclaimed Terracotta Terracotta has to be one of the earthiest tiles out there. Already doing good by being a natural stone tile, to tile with terracotta is to already tread sustainable steps, but why not go one better? Enter reclaimed

terracotta tiles. We’ve got two going on in our collection right now – the Antique Burgundy 100-year-old reclaimed French terracotta tiles and the Pavers reclaimed terracotta parquet and brick tiles. Every tile is completely unique and rich in stories as much as colour. Proper Good Intentioned Paint Stepping away from sustainable tiles for a moment, we couldn’t write on the topic without touching on the other string to the Ca’ Pietra bow – our planet-friendly paint range, Proper Good Paint. 44 serene shades to use across any and every room, they tick every sustainable paint box from being completely water-based and containing mega low VOCs (paint that contains high VOC levels can emit them for up to five years after being applied) to help improve air quality in and outside your home. ne of our clients recently contacted us again to present a development proposal for converting six disused garages into residential units. The constraints of the L-shaped site, flanked by two different types of residential properties, influenced the layout of two small residential units. We designed two units, Unit A has three floors, with an open kitchen, living/dining room, toilet, and laundry on the ground floor, two bedrooms and a shared bathroom on the first floor, and a versatile attic room with a shower. Unit B spans two floors, with an open-plan kitchen, living/dining room, full bathroom, and utility room on the ground floor, and two double

bedrooms and a shared bathroom on the first floor. The building is constructed with concrete blocks, insulated exteriors, and brick slips to match neighbouring properties. The roof was built with an insulated timber structure, and covered with composite black slate tiles, also used vertically on the front facade. Black powder-coated aluminium windows complete the exterior, creating an appealing backdrop for the landscaping. Each unit features a small garden at the rear and a front courtyard with planters, bin and bicycle storage, and accommodations for air source heat pumps. We are thrilled with the outcome as both units were swiftly sold upon listing. schneiderdesigners.co.uk

CROWNING GLORY:

CREATING THE PERFECT ROOF

A

beautiful roof can be the crowning glory of a house, and a secure, watertight roof protects everything underneath it. Restoring or replacing a roof requires safe hands, such as those of Hakka Group, a highly skilled and experienced company frequently trusted by the owners of homes of distinction or special heritage, some of them well-known individuals. Hakka Group works across London and the Home Counties, led by its Managing Director Daniel Powell, who took charge after serving for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment where he learned to excel in both leadership and management under extreme pressure. “Most of all, we like to work on roofs of character”, says Daniel, “That means that we often source and use special materials, and our people use just the right tools and techniques. All of our roofing team are highly skilled artisans, including those who renovate and repair brickwork or leadwork. Some of our team started working for my father over twenty years ago! The result is properties that are in keeping with their surroundings, and are a joy to live in. “I worked with my father in his roofing

company before I joined the military. Now, I use the skills I picked up there to benefit our family business. That means a focus on outcomes, processes, and expertise. We put our clients at the centre of any project and give them a first-rate experience. That includes listening to their needs at all stages, explaining options on materials, style, and finish, and being a safe pair of hands. “We source and work with the finest materials, such as lead, slate, and handmade clay tiles. We have worked on projects from individual, Victorian-era dwellings, to whole estates. For example, a project to renew the lead and slate on several Crown Estate properties in Regents Park.” Dan’s company has earned testimonials such as this, “HAKKA Group are wonderful, a tremendous band of brothers. Dan is a superlative leader of men… He does all he can to make working with him and his team a great experience…. He is unlike any roofer that we’ve had… and is just a very nice guy to do business with… they have a very, very high standard of work.” - Lady P, Kent. THE LOOK OF LUX

T

he new collection from The Baked Tile Company might just offer the perfect solution. The Marble Lux collection brings together the aesthetic appeal of real marble without the ‘real marble’ price tag. Manufactured from premium porcelain, these 9.2mm thick large format tiles will bring opulence wherever they are placed. Intricate veining detail and an ultrapolished finish only add to the appeal. But what really makes this collection special is its intricate pattern, which ensures perfect symmetry. Lesley Taylor, Founder of The Baked Tile Company, said: “Marble has long been the go-to for luxury interiors. But if you want that opulent finish, you’re going to have to put the work in. Marble tiles require constant maintenance and are incredibly expensive. “The Marble Lux collection is made up of porcelain beauties that have the same appearance of marble, but are fuss free and really easy to keep in top condition. “Marble Lux is a visually striking book-matched design, which creates a really impressive feature in any space.” bakedtiles.co.uk
