The City site has been designed by the flamboyant talent of Shayne Bradley, taking inspiration from the Royal Yacht Britannia and the modern-day super yachts. Every table has a booth, providing a sophisticated and intimate dining environment. There are also three private rooms, each seating up to 18 guests, with the full à la carte menu available for business or private dining.

From Caviar to Chicken Kyiv and Beef Wellington, the menus focus on luxury comfort food fit for any occasion. The intriguing range of signature French and English classic dishes reinvented with the finest ingredients also have a slight nod to eastern Europe. Other menu highlights include Chicken and Champagne pie; Lobster,

crab and shrimp pelmeni; Truffle macaroni cheese; Châteaubriand; Salmon en croute with Champagne sauce; Steak tartare; Flaming crème brûlée flambéed at the table; and Tarte Tatin served with Calvados ice cream and caramel sauce. Bob Bob Ricard also serves more caviar than any other restaurant in the UK.

Luxe-for-less means that Champagne and wines are presented at remarkably reasonable prices. A decade ago, Bob Bob Ricard’s owner made the bold and customer-friendly initiative to cap markups on fine wines at just £50, resulting in some of the best ‘bargains’ in the capital. Bob Bob Ricard is also the only restaurant endorsed by Château d’Yquem to serve their wine by the glass, and is responsible for selling 1% of the entire 1998 harvest. Champagne also features prominently at the restaurant, with more than 25 options available by the bottle, and nine by the glass.

Service is another crucial factor to Bob Bob Ricard’s enduring success. The front-of-house team mixes absolute professionalism with a friendly approach to its guests, always mindful that many customers are celebrating important occasions and keen to explore and enjoy the luxury treats on the menu.

I always learn something new, and London is no exception. The number of stories and historical moments--some of which may have been forgotten and arguably unknown until now - are what will make our Saatchi Gallery show such a spectacle. We really hope to educate and inspire through a curious lens that digs into the nooks and crannies of all these subcultures and the massive role London played in bringing them to light on a world stage”.

Each of the exhibition’s chapters will explore exceptional moments in the history of this artistic movement; including the emergence of punk; the birth of hip-hop - marking its 50th anniversary in 2023; and street culture’s strong influence in fashion and film.

PORTRAIT OF SHAKESPEARE GOES ON DISPLAY

Aportrait said to be the only signed and dated image of William Shakespeare created during his lifetime has gone on display in London.

Its owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is offering the piece for sale by private treaty – without an auction – for a figure of more than £10 million.

It is the work of Robert Peake, SergeantPainter to King James I, and is signed and dated 1608.

Prior to 1975, the picture hung in the library of a stately home in the north of England, once home to the Danby family. Since then it has been in private ownership.

Those behind its sale claim that the connections between Shakespeare and Peake are “extensive”.

They say Peake was regularly commissioned to paint the portraits of high-ranking members of the Court and Jacobean society.

They also noted he was commissioned by the Office of the Revels, which oversaw the presentation of plays, and worked in the premises in Clerkenwell, London, where some of Shakespeare’s plays were rehearsed.

However, only two paintings of Shakespeare, both posthumous, are generally recognised as valid – the engraving that appears on the title page of the First Folio, published in 1623, and the sculpture at his funeral monument in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare died in 1616, at the age of 52.

Art expert Duncan Phillips, who investigated the work ahead of the sale, said: “There is more

evidence for this portrait of Shakespeare than any other known painting of the playwright.

“It is a monogrammed and dated work by a portrait painter of serious status with connections to the artist who produced the image for the First Folio.

“The picture has survived the past 400 years almost untouched by wear and tear thanks to its ownership by a family of Shakespeare enthusiasts who hung it in their library.”

However, Shakespeare expert Michael Dobson told the Daily Mail claims the painting is of the Bard are “wishful thinking”.

The painting went is on display at Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

The London Classic Car Show is making a welcome return to prestigious Olympia in Kensington this month.

THE LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW RETURNS TO OLYMPIA

24-26 February 2023

OUT & ABOUT

Entering its ninth year, the capital’s premier celebration of automotive culture and history will again be the mustattend season-opener to the year’s flourishing classic car scene for all classic car owners, collectors, experts and enthusiasts.

Olympia is steeped in motoring history having hosting blueriband automotive shows for more than a century. The spectacular Grand Hall was home to the International Motor Exhibition from 1905 to 1936 and has accommodated a host of similarly distinguished car-themed events ever since… most recently The London Classic Car Show in 2020.

ABOUT THE LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW:

The London Classic Car Show was launched in 2014 at ExCel London and is now firmly established as the capital city’s premier showcase for discerning classic car owners, collectors, experts and enthusiasts. The annual event has quickly become an international celebration of the finest classic road and race cars across the UK and Europe, bringing together the very best dealers, manufacturers, restorers and car clubs.

For 2020 the Show moved to a new home at Olympia, a more central venue boasting significant automotive history… and then, to provide a Covid-compliant setting, The London Classic Car Show 2021 relocated to a new outdoor setting at historic Syon Park, in West London.

The 2023 Show will take place between 24-26 February and advance tickets start from £25 per adult, £20 per child (6-16). Entry for children under the age of six years is free. Premium tickets are available for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting at £65 per adult, which include fast track entry and show guide. For more information visit: theclassiccarshowuk.com

With restrictions on indoor venues, the show was forced to innovate with an inspired move to a temporary new outdoor venue in Syon Park in June 2021… but now returns to its traditional February fixture under Olympia’s magnificent, Victorian, barrel-vaulted roof.

“We are thrilled to be bringing The London Classic Car Show back to Olympia,” confirmed Kate Woodley, Show Director at organiser Brand Events. “It’s a truly spectacular venue which provides us with the perfect backdrop for wonderful displays of iconic cars from throughout the ages. Olympia already feels like our spiritual home, and we have a truly great show planned for 2023.”

As ever, The London Classic Car Show will boast hundreds of the world’s finest cars from yesteryear as well as celebrity interviews on the main stage plus a host of other dazzling highlights. Two special displays have already been confirmed for February – the first will honour 60 years of the evergreen Porsche 911, the second will put the spotlight on Barn-Finds and Survivors.

The former will feature an eye-catching collection of evolving 911s from the original aircooled Type 901 launched at the Frankfurt Show in 1963 right up to the latest Type 992 supercars. The latter will provide a fascinating insight into the uncovering and restoration of recently discovered relics as well as offering visitors a trip down memory lane with a line-up of oncemainstream models that are now becoming muchmissed rarities.

A special display featuring three of the bespoke Mini Coopers presented to the Beatles in 1965 will be another major attraction. Sadly the car given to John Lennon hasn’t survived the test of time, but the Minis of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are being reunited for the first time in more than 50 years.

There will also be an auction organised by Historics with 100 highly sought-after classics going under the hammer giving both visitors and those online a great chance to join the classic car movement.

Offering exceptional value, adult admission in advance is priced at just £25. Full details of all ticket buying options – as well as the latest show news – can be found on the official theclassiccarshowuk.com website.

London’s Secret Charm

Whilst London might be known for its grand Victorian townhouses and riverside apartments, there is another side to London’s property market that you may not have yet seen. Tucked away are some absolutely charming historic mews streets. London’s mews were created to house the coachmen and horses that served the Victorian and Georgian elite of nearby mansions. These once humble lodgings are today cobblestone lanes with picture perfect homestransformed into some of the most sought-after property in London and instantly transporting you back to another time and place..

If you’re wondering where exactly you can find these pretty streets, we’re here to help, here are just some of the cutest streets in the capital.

ST LUKE’S MEWS, W11 1DF

WARREN MEWS, W1T 6AD

The distinctive entrance to Warren Mews in Fitzrovia is almost as photogenic as the mews behind. Wander through and you’ll be transported to another time. Just a stone’s throw away from busy Euston Road and Regent’s Park, keep your eye out for the low passageway cut through one of the buildings lining Warren Street or you just might miss it.

Love Actually fans should head straight to St Luke’s Mews in Notting Hill. No. 27 was used as the setting for the infamous scene where Mark proclaims his love for Juliet using cue cards. The buildings were originally used as stables for the houses on Lancaster Road and Westbourne Park, but most have since been converted into flats. Still, some authentic features of the mews have been retained, including a number of the stable doors. This alleyway remains one of the prettiest in the capital and a favorite of many London photographers.

KYNANCE MEWS, SW7 4QR

Kynance Mews in Kensington is arguably one of the prettiest streets in London. This mews makes for a tranquil getaway from all the noisy hustle and bustle. The cobbled backstreet – accessible through the small archways at Launceston Place or Gloucester Road – narrowly escaped bombing during World War II, when much of the surrounding area had to be rebuilt. Kynance Mews is a jaw-droppingly pretty place. Potted plants line the edges of the street and look up to see windowsills blooming with flowers.

24 FEBRUARY 2023 OUT & ABOUT

LITTLE GREEN STREET, NW5 1BL

This narrow cobbled street in Kentish Town is only 8 feet wide and is lined with two-story brick houses that were built in the 1780s. The buildings are Grade II listed so they’re protected by English Heritage and it’s one of London’s few Georgian streets that remains completely intact. The street features in a poem by English poet, John Betjeman and starred in the music video for The Kinks’s 1966 song, Dead End Street.

KELLY STREET, NW1 8PG

Kelly Street is one of the jewels in the Kentish Crown. It’s a perfect curve of mid-19th century Grade II-listed pastel terraces in a relatively narrow tree-lined road dating back to the 1830s. The houses are distinct as a result of their brightly coloured stucco fronts, black cast iron railings, window guards and small front gardens. The street is intimate, quiet and secluded, retaining original Victorian streetlights and historic black and white bollards. providing glorious historic character.

BATHURST MEWS, W2 2SB

With 65 properties, it is one of the largest in London. Nestled among the streets of Bayswater, it remains true to its historic roots as the only mews in London still housing a working stable. The stables have been in constant use since the 1830s except for a short period during World War II when they housed motorcars instead. The terraced houses and cobbled street survived the Blitz, narrowly escaping the effects of a bomb that devastated nearby Westbourne Terrace. A visit is a must if you want to appreciate the functional history of these streets. You’ll probably hear and smell the horses before you see them.

QUEEN’S GATE MEWS, SW7 5QN

Just across the road from Kynace Mews you can find another of the cutest streets in London. Queen’s Gate Mews was the location of London’s first-ever petrol pump – now a colourful lane oozing old English charm. Celebrities Guy Ritchie and Madonna used to live in one of these homes and there’s a quaint little, local pub hidden away at the end.

HOLLAND PARK MEWS, W11 3SU

A stone’s throw from Holland Park and the beautiful Kyoto Garden, these mews are accessed via an ornate stone archway. A unique feature of the houses on Holland Park Mews is that they all have staircases leading up to the second story. The vibrantly painted doors and the flowers and creepers spilling over the wrought-iron balconies make this mews utterly magnificent!

“AYear 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills that are important for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond.” says Joseph Birchall, the Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE).

“At QE, our mission is for all members of our community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. As Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-school model, we harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum. This is a curriculum which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at Chapter House, our Preparatory school, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.”

“In a difference from the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, here at QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6 and stay with us until Year 9. We find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so we made it our focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers.”

“Importantly, we have made a crucial decision not to assess our Year 6 students using SATS

testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common evaluation tasks” - these are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows us to focus on delivering those skills that the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond.”

“Our all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, which is at the heart of everything we do here at QE, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment throughout

King’s Magna. We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence.”

AN OASIS ON YOUR DOORSTEP

iving or working in London can create a buzz like no other.

Commuters, residents, prestigious stores, vibrant bars and restaurants - the atmosphere for some can be electric.

In contrast, in some of the most exclusive areas of London are private, tranquil green spaces….the city’s garden squares. They’re a protected species, some accessible only with a key and surrounded by some of the most expensive homes on the market. Many are period properties often constructed in crescents, terraces and squares. So important are they that, in 1931, the London Squares Preservation Act was introduced to protect more than 400 from being built over.

Let’s take a look at the most expensive and how much its privacy and exclusivity will cost you…

Carlton House Terrace Gardens, Westminster

£8.79million

Top of the list is this exclusive road just a short stroll from Buckingham Palace. A property will cost you an average of £8.79million. Former residents include Prime Ministers William Gladstone, Earl Grey and Lord Palmerston. It is the location of what is thought to be Britain’s most expensive home, with rumours six years ago that a Saudi prince had sold 18 Carlton House Terrace for £250million.

Eaton Square, Belgravia

£5.88million

One of the most prestigious addresses in London. Famous residents include Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin. More recently, advertising mogul Charles Saatchi and football managers Jose Mourinho and Sven-Goran Eriksson are all thought to have lived there. Eaton Square is a stone’s throw from Sloane Street – home to luxurious brands such as Gucci, Cartier, Dior and Versace.

Wilton Crescent Garden, Belgravia

£5.35million

Wilton Crescent was named after Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton. It has been home to royals, political leaders and celebrities ever since. Surrounded by a semi-circle of graceful white-stucco houses, it’s a calm and tranquil place. Among its most famous residents were Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma,

a British Royal Navy officer and uncle of Prince Philip, who was infamously assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

St James’s Gardens, Notting Hill £3.81million

The gardens are laid out in an informal woodland style, dominated by fine chestnut and lime trees dating back to the 19th century. The garden is in the heart of the Norland Conservation Area, with the premiums surely pushed up by its close proximity to the open spaces of Holland Park, attracting many wealthy businesspeople and celebrities such as Sir Richard Branson and David Beckham.

Thurloe Square, Brompton £3.76million

The square is named after John Thurloe, an advisor of Oliver Cromwell, who owned the land in the 17th century. Sir Henry Cole (1808–1892), the first Director of the V&A Museum, lived at No. 33. The building is marked with a blue plaque.. Not only is the square dog-friendly, it also has a children’s playground and a stroll from the shops, restaurants and museums of desirable Knightsbridge.

Rosmead Garden, Notting Hill £3.64million

Perhaps one of London’s most famous garden squares, having featured heavily in the Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts film Notting Hill. The space is quite unique among its contemporaries, with many of the homes surrounding it having direct access onto the green via a backdoor, making it a rear garden of sorts.

Kensington Square, Kensington £3.16million

With an average property price of £3.16million, it was originally known as King’s Square, built in honour of the reigning monarch at the time, James ll. The garden is private and not open to the public, though it has taken part in the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend. Former residents include composer Hubert Parry, philosopher John Stuart Mill and John Simon the sanitary reformer.

Park Crescent, Marylebone £3million

This crescent is among the most prestigious in the capital, in a desirable location at the north end of Portland Place and south of Marylebone Road. It comprises beautiful stuccoed terraced houses designed by the architect John Nash, and forms into a semi-circle. The original plan was to build a circular building, but only the bottom half was completed. Between the arms of the crescent is a private garden, recognised as being of historic interest.

Hanover Gardens, Notting Hill £2.97million

This peaceful woodland garden is situated within the Ladbroke Estate. Among its famous former residents was Dame Sylvia Crowe,

the noted landscape architect. This communal garden used to be known as Hanover Terrace Garden, Hanover Terrace being the old name of Lansdowne Walk.

Markham Square, Chelsea £2.73million

One of Chelsea’s finest garden squares, situated north of King’s Road, and a short walk from Sloane Square. The building of the original square began in 1836 on the site of the old Box Farm orchard – owned by the Markham family. In 1935 the garden was laid out as a cherry orchard. After WW2, the square was redesigned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s head gardener to resemble a private country garden.

These exclusive gated gardens are steeped in history and treasured sanctuaries amongst the hustle and bustle of our capital. Wealthy buyers from around the globe continue to be attracted to London’s squares, mainly due to their scale, style and timeless beauty.

VIP PROTECTION

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.

The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and low-standard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘high-end’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains

consistent at the pinnacle of their trade and the chosen provider to many security-conscious individuals, families, and businesses.

Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.

Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or guntoting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.

John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.

Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

INSPIRATION, COLOUR AND CHARACTERS

Internationally acclaimed artist Christian Develter makes a post pandemic splash in the UK with the opening of his first solo exhibition at Molasses House this month.

Christian Develter, a “global nomad”, born in 1968 in Blankenberge, Belgium, has resided and worked in Asia since the midnineties and now calls Cambodia home with a purpose-built studio nestled amongst the serene paddy fields of Siem Reap, home of the iconic Angkor Wat temple.

Christian uses oils as an instrument to portray his rich experiences of people and cultures around the world. As a highly

versatile artist whose work pushes boundaries, he believes that despite cultural differences and starkly different socio-realities, there are moments that can be appreciated by everyone.

Christian’s sense of beauty and the individual strength and spirit of his characters is developed through careful consideration of line, lighting, and geometry as well as his insightful awareness of the power of colour to reveal beyond the surface of each character. At the heart of these works is a search not just for physical beauty but also for something of the spirit that embraces and motivates each one in our era of hyper celebrity.

The uniqueness of Christian’s work lies in his radical choice for strong colours and mixture of oils and acrylics usually preferring to combine them with bold shapes. His works are deeply powerful and compelling in the way they capture light and space in translating Christian’s desire to create large iconic works.

‘Chin Series’ Inspiration

The inspiration for this body of work

38 FEBRUARY 2023 OUT & ABOUT

comes from the intricately tattooed faces of the Chin women located in the North-Western region of Myanmar. In 2012, Develter travelled the region extensively and visited the remote tribes of the Chin region, in which this series is entitled. Each painting from this series is named after a village or area within the Chin region. The concept behind the works being the modern Asian face of today, overlayed with the ribal tattoos - grounding us back to our cultural roots and heritage. This striking collection of work is an invitation to explore the artist’s contemporary narrative of evolving cultures through his district creative style.

The Chin tribe and their tattoos are relatively unknown to the outside world. These tribes in north-western Myanmar (Chin and Rakhine State) to this day use tattoo facial markings that is a centuries old tradition to distinguish one hill tribe from another along with their marital status and social ranking. Together with the Derung tribe in Southwest China’s Yunnan province, they are the only other tribe known to adhere to this traditional ancient practice. Both tribes are believed to be from the same Indo-Tibetan lineage.

Develter & Molasses House, an essential exhibition

Collaborating with cigar brand Siglo and Italian whiskey Samaroli, Christian draws upon his studies at Ghent Art School and Antwerp Fashion Academy, to create a joyful series of compositions, presenting a radiant kaleidoscope of shapes and forms. His choice of playful humour and bright colours recalls the artist’s view of popular fashions and trends. These are self evident in his most recent work, launched this month, building on the acclaimed Cigar Series which continues to evolve with global icons from film, fashion, literature and politics.

Develter’s world acclaimed works are housed in some of the most spectacular properties and art collections around the world including that of Royalty. The vibrant UK exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection and an immersive experience to view a curated vision of Christian’s internationally acclaimed signature works from his Original Oil Paintings and Limited Edition Lithograph Collections. Bold, vivid and iconic understate Develter’s work. A visual feast for the eyes and walls.

GILL PARKER

Gill’s equine, equestrian and wildlife sculptures have earned her international acclaim, with commissioned pieces in galleries, exhibitions and royal households worldwide.

Initially inspired by the early animalier artists, the forms of the natural world are her inspiration and motivation. Gill has developed a distinct and empathetic style, exploring a simplified focus on form and feel, but still based in realism and an understanding of anatomy and movement.

‘I don’t make sculpture to shock, make statements, or needing explanation, I want to make sculpture that is a ‘standalone’ thing of beauty, based on the perfect forms of nature’

An accomplished horsewoman, Gill’s work clearly demonstrates her passion for horses. Yet her work is remarkably versatile in both subject matter and scale. Her limited edition and commissioned pieces cover, equestrian, wildlife and every aspect of the natural world.

Gill lives and works in a beautiful part of rural Gloucestershire, along with a various assortment of animals. Gill also breeds and shows American Quarter Horses with which she has won numerous European and National championships. It was whilst studying art at South Wilts Grammar School in Salisbury that Gill was first introduced to sculpture.

In May 1983 Gill took her first bronzes to London where they were bought by Garrards and Asprey. Early support and encouragement from the Sladmore Gallery led to her first one women show in November 1984. Since then, she has become a leader in the field of equine and wildlife sculpture. With many major commissions to her name including the life-size bronze Motivator at Ascot Racecourse, the ‘Emirates’ bronzes, in flight lounges around the world, Boris, Chester Zoo’s famous chimp, five life-size wildlife sculptures for Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi, and the iconic ‘Chloe’ Horse door handle.

Gill is a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists. gillparker.com

The Sunseeker 75 Sport Yacht is a remarkable feat of engineering and design excellence. Continuing the vast popularity of the Sport Yacht range but with even more space and elevated interior appointments, this new yacht will offer excellent performance and functionality.

EXTERIOR

A design concept that balances beautiful architecture with functionality is central to Sunseeker’s latest Sport Yacht. The beautiful symmetry of the stern is a feature in itself.

Dual steps lead from the bathing platform to the aft cockpit, with a tender garage capable of housing a Williams 395. A signature walkaround step on the bathing platform elongates the yacht while providing a visual feature

‘SPIRIT OF INNOVATION’

OFFICIALLY THE WORLD’S FASTEST ALL-ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT

Rolls Royce have announced that their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is officially the world’s fastest allelectric aircraft, having set two new world records which have now been independently confirmed. The aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 213.04 km/h (132mph).

In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 532.1km/h (330 mph) over 15 kilometres – 292.8km/h (182 mph) faster than the previous record.

Both records have been officially verified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation

62 FEBRUARY 2023 TRAVEL

that controls and certifies world aeronautical and astronautical records. During its record-breaking runs, the aircraft, which is part of the UK Government-backed ACCEL or ‘Accelerating the Electrification of Flight’ project, also clocked up a maximum top speed of 623km/h (387.4mph) making it the world’s fastest allelectric vehicle.

The aircraft was propelled on its record breaking runs by 400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain and the most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace.

Rolls Royce worked in partnership with aviation energy storage startup Electroflight and automotive powertrain supplier YASA. As well as a stunning technical achievement, the project and world record runs provided important data for their future electric power and propulsion systems for all-electric urban air mobility (UAM) and hybrid-electric commuter aircraft. The characteristics that ‘air-taxis’ require from batteries, for instance, are very similar to what was developed for the ‘Spirit of Innovation’.

Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of flying speed record attempts and breaking records, dating back to the Schneider Trophies

of the early 1930’s. The speed achieved by test pilot and RollsRoyce Director of Flight Operations Phill O’Dell in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ was more than 213.04 km/h (132 mph) faster than the previous record set by the Siemens eAircraft powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017. Never before in the history of the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) record attempts has there been such a significant increase in speed over such a short timeframe, highlighting the rapid pace at which the electrification of aerospace is advancing. Electroflight Pilot Steve Jones flew the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft for the 15km record run.

All three organisations involved in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ – Rolls-Royce, Electroflight and YASA – share a passion for innovation and through the development process, have learned from the motorsport background of both their partners and from Electroflight’s pace as a start-up. Rolls-Royce have also shared their aerospace expertise, including the rigorous safety and testing methods needed by the civil aviation industry. This combination has helped turn a concept into a world record breaker. The third record of their all-electric aircraft for the fastest time to climb to 3000 metres in a time of 202 seconds, breaking the current record by 60 seconds, is still going through the verification process.

The first of the year’s London Fashion Week hits the capital this month. The world-famous London Fashion Week, presented by Clearpay, returns with catwalks, celebrities, glitz and glamour. It is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world – and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers alongside Paris, Milan and New York. It presents an unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent and the best and brightest names in the industry.

While many of us are already planning our Spring wardrobe, designers at London Fashion Week will be showcasing their Autumn/Winter 2023 Collections - both menswear and womenswear, as a hybrid digital and physical event.

It is a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends - whether colourful, crazy or controversial - the world is watching as fashion history is made.

A provisional schedule for London Fashion Week has been announced and so far, it sees the return of over 100 emerging and

established designers. Brands set to return include iconic British luxury brand Burberry, who will be presenting their first collection under the new creative direction of Daniel Lee. Also, DAVID KOMA, JW Anderson, Emilia Wickstead, Roksanda, Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Julien Macdonald and Halpern.

The BFC has announced an exciting line-up of events and activations to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally celebrated BFC NEWGEN initiative. BFC NEWGEN is the most established designer development scheme globally, set up by the BFC to enable a group of designers, including the late Lee Alexander McQueen, to showcase their collections at London Fashion Week in 1993. The year-long celebration will kick off at LFW February 2023 and will provide an opportunity for the creative community to come together to celebrate and acknowledge the scheme’s illustrious history and alumni, and London’s legacy in nurturing emerging talent and the next generation of visionary creatives.

THE BEST SKINCARE COMBINATIONS FOR GLOWING SKIN

Make your skincare routine as effective as possible with these clever combos. By Prudence Wade

The world of skincare is a crowded one, and it can be difficult to know what ingredients will give you the best results.

If you really want your skincare routine to work hard, it’s all about choosing the right combinations. “Combining ingredients means you can simultaneously treat and protect at the same time. This in turn can increase the effectiveness, which will then deliver greater and faster results,” explains aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai (drsabrina.co.uk).

“Combining ingredients increases the effectiveness of the ingredient – certain ingredients work very well together, which gives enhanced results.”

Whether you layer individual ingredients or choose an all-in-one is up to you. However, ShahDesai urges you to make sure “the formulations are compatible and do not negate each other or irritate or aggravate skin”.

Plus, pre-formulated products have a few extra benefits. “Some people prefer products that have combined ingredients as they are easier to incorporate in a regime, do not negate each other and are sustainably packaged,” she adds. “Remember that using too many products can actually damage the

Niacinamide and salicylic acid

“Both of these ingredients have anti-ageing and anti-acne effects,” says Shah-Desai. GP and aesthetician Dr Ahmed El Muntasar (theaestheticsdoctor. com) also loves this combination.

“The salicylic acid, which is a chemical exfoliant, helps to get rid of any spots (whiteheads, blackheads) and gets rid of the top epidermis,” he says. “Then the niacinamide comes in and hydrates and nourishes the skin underneath, so it doesn’t get irritated.”

moisture barrier and or cause other skin conditions (such as inflammation, redness and blemishes).”

If you’re looking to boost the effectiveness of your skincare routine, these ingredient combinations are a match made in heaven…

Niacinamide and vitamin C

Shah-Desai also recommends combining niacinamide and vitamin C.

She describes both as “powerful” antioxidants, saying vitamin C can have “a whitening effect on pigmentation and dark spots”, while niacinamide “enhances the prevention of pigmentation, [and] improves the whitening effect on brown spots”.

Dr Sabrina™ Perfect 360 Eye Illuminate, £90

Vitamin C and vitamin E

If you’ve got products with vitamin C and E but you’re not layering them up, you could be missing a trick.

82 FEBRUARY 2023 FASHION & BEAUTY

“When combined together, vitamin C and E enhance the effects of each other and give fantastic results,” explains Shah-Desai.

“When applied topically, vitamin C is a powerful skin booster. It improves the appearance of your skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, repairs damage done by UV rays, stabilises collagen and gives dull skin a luminous glow. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory properties, and combats free radical damage by preventing oxidative damage to cells.”

Wild Science Lab Juice Boost Brightening Serum, £38; Cetaphil Rich Night Cream, £5.32 (was £7.99), Superdrug

Retinol and hyaluronic acid or peptides

Retinol is a powerful ingredient beloved by beauty buffs for reducing the appearance of fine lines, but it also comes with its issues – namely, the dreaded ‘retinol uglies’, when your skin reacts negatively to the product. Potential side effects of retinol include “redness, irritation and dry skin”, says Shah-Desai.

That’s why she likes layering hers with hyaluronic acid, saying it “helps to lessen the potential side effects of retinol… Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to hydrate the skin, it helps the skin hold onto water, which hydrates the outer layers of the skin.”

To combat the potential side effects of retinol, Muntsara recommends applying a peptide on top. “Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath, helping to maintain a nice, healthy skin barrier,” he says.

Dr. Brandt Triple Active Retinol Overnight Renewal Cream, £59; Lacura Multi-Peptide

Moisturiser, £6.99, Aldi; Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, £6.50, Sephora

SPF and vitamin C

Applying vitamin C before SPF in the morning is a genius idea, according to Shah-Desai, as it “will help protect the skin from UV damage and free radical damage.

“Vitamin C helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, slows down skin ageing and reduces the appearance of brown spots.” The order is important here – make sure you apply vitamin C first, “to get the best benefits of these products combined”, she says. Muntasar is also a fan of this combination, saying: “Vitamin C gives you that daytime brightness and antioxidants for a nice glow, then the SPF on top of it protects your skin. There is some research that potentially shows that a good quality vitamin C oil might make your SPF work even better.”

10 DESIGNS THAT MAKE TIME STAND STILL

There are some furniture designs that seem to belong to both the past and the future, that wouldn’t look out of place in the home of your grandparent or grandchild, that give no clue to when they were designed by the way they look – are they a recent Barber and Osgerby triumph, or a classic Gio Ponti number?

Really, it’s thanks to the Modernist movement which began its climb to dominance in the early 1900s, properly getting going post World War II when contemporary designers turned their backs on the ornate classical furniture of their forbears, instead looking to tone things down and shake things up. As Le Corbusier put it; ‘A great epoch has begun. There exists a new spirit.’

Out went Art Deco, Neoclassical and Victorian styles – no more dark carved woods, gilded carpentry or rich patterns – and in came the shiny and new. Pared-back forms, a focus on function over style and visual lightness, all gloriously mass-produced with gleaming new technologies, were finally available and affordable(ish) to all.

Design icons rained down. Furniture took on sculptural, minimal forms as hallowed architects began producing smaller objects to fill their projects, and names such as Eames, Wegner, Castiglioni and Breuer were sanctified in the furniture hall of fame.

Jump forward to the present day, and the tubular steel is gleaming just as brightly as it did 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago, and those alluring curves look like they just fell out of the pages of a contemporary design magazine. Traversing the decades is no easy feat, yet several key 20th-century pieces of furniture have made the leap with ease, their utter minimalism protecting them from the ravages of time and blending them in so well with the present-day, it’s hard to tell what new and what’s a revered design icon.

We all know the bonafide classics – the Wishbone chairs, the Tulip tables, the Eames loungers – so let’s discover those (slightly) more under-the-radar pieces that

have made it through the years thanks to their brilliantly time-proof aesthetic.

Wassily lounge chair by Marcel Breuer, 1925

Designed by Hungarian modernist architect Marcel Breuer in 1925, it’s hard to believe the gleaming shapely form of the Wassily lounge chair, now produced by Knoll, is hovering around its hundredth birthday!

PH Septima pendant light by Poul

Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause.

S 533 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1927

With sculptural curves slotting it into modern-day sensibilities and the ongoing trend for all things round, the S 533 chair by leading German-American modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defies the rules of time.

La Chaise by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948

The Dali-esque La Chaise by lauded American industrial designers Charles & Ray Eames was inspired by the Floating Figure sculpture by French

artist Gaston Lachaise. A conceptual, freeform design on which the user could either recline or sit up straight on, the daybed is an icon of organic design.

CH07 Shell Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner, 1963

A new type of shell chair with three legs, no armrests and a deep recline, the CH07 Shell Lounge Chair was created by ‘master of chairs’ Danish architect Hans J. Wegner in 1963, its organically curving seat gaining it the nickname of ‘the smiling chair’.

Haller storage by Fritz Haller, 1965

Purposefully designed to be timeproof, Haller storage was designed by Swiss architect Fritz Haller for Swiss brand USM in 1965 and has had a place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art since 2001.

PK24 chaise lounge by Poul Kjærholm, 1965

Simple, elegant, and minimalist, the PK24 chaise lounge is an iconic Poul Kjærholm piece, the seat is also referred to as the Hammock Chair to highlight its function of suspending the body between two points.

Snoopy lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1967

A 1960s child in more ways than one, the Snoopy lamp by Italian architect and designer brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was created in 1967, taking its shape from the loveable illustrative dog from the cartoon strip Peanuts which was at its peak at the time.

Soriana lounge chair by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, 1969

Created by postmodern Italian architects and designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1969, the Soriana lounge chair is a true style icon, changing the face of upholstered furniture and winning the illustrious Compasso d’Oro prize in 1970.

SPATHROOM CHIC: INTEREST IN HOME SPA BATHROOMS SOARS

LUXURIOUS, SPA-INSPIRED BATHROOMS ARE GOING TO BE BIG NEWS IN 2023, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH FROM INDEPENDENT TILE SPECIALISTS PORCELAIN SUPERSTORE.

Data from Pinterest shows searches for the term ‘home spa bathroom’ are up 190% over the last two years.

Abbas Youssefi, Founder of Porcelain Superstore, said: “How homeowners perceive their bathroom has changed.

“The bathroom has always been one of the most functional rooms in the home, but in a post-pandemic world, homeowners are looking to create gorgeous-looking spaces where they can completely unwind.”

Abbas believes large format, natural-effect tiles that exude effortless luxury will be the ones to watch in 2023.

He said: “Large format tiles mean minimal joins, which improves flow and can help the bathroom feel more expansive. Combine with natural-effect tiles, such as stone, wood or marble for an opulent finish.”

Here Abbas selects his pick of the perfect home spa bathroom (or ‘spathroom’) tiles from Porcelain Superstore.

Pardini Hall Architecture

The project involved the refurbishment of the dwelling and the addition of a lightweight glass and steel extension which provides the family with additional light and space. In the daylight, the glass and stainless steel structure reflects its surroundings, almost melding with the garden.

In the evening, the extension illuminates the original brickwork and the glass façade virtually disappears. Additionally, two walk-on skylights increase the natural light throughout the building, whilst also providing an interesting feature that changes with the seasons outside.

The result is an integrated contemporary design to this classical building. The modern makeover of the ground and basement floors, creates brighter spaces, using elegant materials and furniture. The landscape has been simplified and tailored to the client’s needs. Large indigenous ferns were relocated and donated to Belgrave Square, which opened up the garden, revealing a classical fresco once hidden away.

Pardini Hall has always been guided by the belief that the quality of our surroundings has a direct influence on the quality of our lives, whether that is in the workplace, at home, in the public realm or experienced through an object.

We feel we can impact people’s perception of value

and behaviour, promote a new design approach that reflects the state and values of the society we want to create for our sustainable future, this is how we choose our clientele.

Architecture and design are generated by the needs of people, both material and spiritual, and the consequences of the physical context, the culture and the climate of a place. Our approach is also supported by our strong commitment to the environment in the choice of materials and construction techniques.

As a company, we push our ability to see patterns and anticipate trends.

PHA offer 30 years of collective experience at some of the world’s most prestigious architecture firms.

A spirit of collaboration is the essence of our design and project management processes. Our team of dedicated and highly motivated professionals cultivate an ongoing dialogue with clients, consultants, artists and craftspeople from a design’s inception through to the project’s completion of construction and its postoccupancy.

THE BEST HOUSEPLANTS TO BOOST YOUR WELLBEING

110 FEBRUARY 2023
EXPERTS OFFER THEIR FAVOURITES. BY HANNAH STEPHENSON.

It’s no surprise plants can cheer us up in the winter months. New research by Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) has backed this up, finding 40% of those surveyed believe colourful houseplants make them feel happier.

But they don’t just lift your mood. The NASA Clean Air study found that many houseplants can clean the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and ammonia, says podcaster and garden expert Ellen Mary, who recently launched People Plants Wellbeing (peopleplantswellbeing.com), a new naturebased wellbeing consultancy.

“The more plants the merrier, as long as you have the time and space to care for them,” says Mary. “To clean the air you can have fewer plants if they have larger foliage, as they can be more efficient at reducing toxins.”

She continues: “Studies into the wellbeing benefits of houseplant ownership showed that even just being in the presence of indoor plants can improve wellbeing, so not just softening aesthetics but also feeling a connection to the natural world. For those working in rooms with plants, they performed better on cognitive tasks and lower levels of physiological stress.”

According to the RHS, studies indicate that indoor plants can lead to increased worker productivity and increased pain tolerance, for example, where plants were used in hospital settings.

THESE ARE SOME OF THE BEST HOUSEPLANTS TO BOOST YOUR WELLBEING…

Air purifying

“The spathiphyllum, or peace lily, is a great choice for beginner and seasoned plant parents alike, and will thrive in a bright spot out of direct sunlight. This striking plant should be watered weekly, or when its soil feels dry to the touch,” says Claire Bishop, head of houseplants at Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com).

“If your plant isn’t flowering, water it, feed it and move it to a brighter spot for a beautiful addition to your home that will not only brighten up your interiors but also your mood.”

Mary recommends pothos, an easy-to-grow bushy specimen which thrives on low light and neglect, and purifies the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide. It also helps to eliminate odours and is said to relieve tired screen eyes, she notes.

Hedera helix (English ivy) is also a good air purifier – it grows in partial shade and is a low-care plant, and its long vines make it great for shelves and mantelpieces.

Green space

“If you’re looking to give your home a boost of greenery without spending a fortune, smaller plants and ferns are a fantastic option. Adiantum (maidenhair fern), nephrolepis (sword fern) and phlebodium fern varieties are all typically low cost and will elevate any room in your home,” Bishop suggests.

“The Dypsis lutescens is another wonderful choice and comes in a

variety of sizes, making it ideal for homes of all styles and will instantly improve any space.”

Wellbeing wonders

Bishop calls houseplants “great additions to your home office, to perk up your working environment and make you more productive.

“If caring for houseplants isn’t your forte but you still want to feel the benefits of them, consider a sansevieria (snake plant). These quirky plants can go without water for up to a month so require very little attention, making them perfect for those just starting their plant journey.”

Bathroom boosters

“To promote wellness in your bathroom and give this space a zen look and feel, use houseplants to create a spa-like vibe,” says Bishop. “Ferns, with their air purifying qualities, thrive in a humid environment, making them ideal for your bathroom.

“Plant your ferns in soil with good drainage and keep them moist with weekly mistings. If your fern is looking dehydrated, you can plunge it into a sink or bucket of water to bring it back to life. Simply submerge your pot into the water and then remove it, letting it drain completely before placing it back into a bright spot.”

Bedroom calm

Mary recommends orchids for the bedroom, which hold symbolism of positive energy prosperity and growth and can improve sleep, promote relaxation and enhance feelings of calmness and peace, she says. They also don’t need much watering and can flower for long

periods and reflower after resting.

Another good choice for the bedroom is sansevieria, which thrives in low light, photosynthesizes even at night and is easy to grow, she recommends.

Positive energy

The money plant (Crassula ovata/Jade plant) exudes positive energy, says Mary, and is thought to bring good luck, growth, prosperity and wealth, while also releasing a lot of oxygen.

CHARLEY CHAU’S FAROE

The Best and Most Practical Fabric For a Dog to Go to Bed with This Winter

With all the warmth and depth of wool, but without the maintenance headache, the brilliant Faroe fabric was an instant hit with customers of luxury dog bedding company Charley Chau when it debuted on the brand’s Bliss Bolster Bed in 2020. Three years on, Faroe has now spun its way onto even more Charley Chau Beds, meaning there’s a snuggly bedfellow to keep every dog warm and cosy this winter.

Available across Charley Chau’s signature pocket-style Snuggle Dog Bed in Classic and Winter Warmer styles, the Bliss Bolster Bed, Day Bed Mattress and Anti-Microbial Memory Foam Dog Bed Mattress, it is now freshly launched as Bed Bumper Sets for Crates and Rattan Baskets. In its latest presentation, Faroe is now bringing all the snugly feels to turn a cold, unwelcoming dog crate into a cosy little den, and giving the enduringly timeless rattan dog basket a luxe makeover.

But why is Faroe so utterly fabulous for dogs and their dwellings, and especially in winter? Despite being soft, warm and inviting touch, Faroe is a tough canine cookie that is more than capable of withstanding the paces of daily dog use. Tough enough for heavy commercial upholstery use, with a Martindale Rub Test Score of 100,000, Faroe

surpasses the entry level rub score of 30,000 for ‘commercial grade’ fabrics.

As well as being hardy, the fibres used to weave Faroe have also been treated with a permanent stainguard treatment, which means surface dirt never gets the chance to get a proper hold in the fabric. In the winter months when weather is inclement and muddy paws frequent, the stainguard feature becomes extremely beneficial, as it means the fabric can be easily spot cleaned in between washes. Additionally, Faroe’s moisture-wicking and quick drying properties means moisture is wicked away from wet dog’s coat and the fabric dries out quickly, so a dog is less likely to suffer a consistently damp bed.

Handling dog hair is a breeze for Faroe too. Thanks to its tight weave, the amount of hair that works its way into the fabric itself is reduced and what remains is easily removed with a quick shake or a light hoover over.

For a clean and pristine dog bed and hygiene in the home, all of Charley Chau’s Faroe range features fully removeable covers that can go into the washing machine on a 30° to 40° cycle, dependent on the style of bed, with the fabric washing beautifully time after time. With prices from £85 cosy up a four-legged friend’s bed with Faroe this winter at Charleychau. com and see dogs sleeping in sublime comfort @Charleychau on socials.
