JAPAN’S ‘LUCKY BAG’ TRADITION PROMISES GOOD FORTUNE FOR 2024 Fukubukuro ‘lucky bags’ are among Japan’s many New Year (oshōgatsu) traditions

N

ew Year (oshōgatsu) is Japan’s most important festival, and with it comes the sound of ringing bells as people mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new with their first visit (hatsumōde) to a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine. With three days of public holidays, and as businesses begin to reopen, it is the tills that start ringing as shoppers embrace one of Japan’s seasonal traditions, fukubukuro or ‘lucky bags’. The New Year tradition of fukubukuro is to Japan what the January sales are to the UK. Shoppers head to their favourite shops and department stores to pick up fukubukuro containing an unseen assortment of heavily discounted goods. Keenly anticipated by young and old, stores open early for shoppers who turn out in force to grab a bag at their favourite retailers (even Krispy Kreme has one). It’s impossible to know exactly what’s inside a fukubukuro – and that’s part of the fun. Fans of lucky bags each have their own techniques for choosing a bag, be that giving it a shake or a squeeze, or perhaps feeling its weight. However all buyers adhere to the policy of no refunds and no exchanges, as well as the most important rule, which is not to peek inside! To break the seal on a lucky bag before buying it is the ultimate taboo. This New Year, Japan House London’s own lucky bags will surprise and delight. Packaged in an exclusive draw-string cloth

bag, this limited-edition fukubukuro is designed to reflect Japan House London’s elegant minimalist aesthetic, with gifts on the theme of happiness, alongside objects – including pottery, kitchenware and brushes – that reveal aspects of Japanese cultures, innovation and craft. Japan House London’s lucky bags will be available – in store on 101 – 111 Kensington High Street, and online on shop.japanhouselondon.uk from 3 January 2024, with three categories available, priced at £24, £84 and £134.

When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since. The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years. During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy. The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained

for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part of the parks’ ecosystem, as well as being a valuable amenity and educational feature. These parkland deer are wild animals, which are not regularly shepherded or handled; they are left to breed normally and to establish normal social behaviour. All deer parks have a maximum capacity of deer numbers, which must not be exceeded to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment (the complex ecosystems for which Richmond Park is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, National Nature Reserve and a European Special Area of Conservation, being of particular importance). The deer are wild animals, so never try to touch or feed them. Always keep a respectful distance, especially if you have a dog. As well as deer, a range of other mammals lives in the park, though they may not be as obvious. These include Fox, Rabbit, Shrew, Mice and Vole. CHRISTIAN DIOR, CHRISTIAN BÉRARD. JOYFUL MELANCHOLY A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY GALLIMARD

16 JANUARY 2024

T

his jjoint biography of Christian Dior and Christian Bérard’s sets us out into a fascinating period, from inter-war Paris to the post-

war Café Society. In a munificently detailed book published by Editions Gallimard in collaboration with Dior, Laurence Benaïm looks back at the sincere ties uniting Christian Bérard and Christian Dior. On the surface, everything seems to oppose them: the extravagant, ultra-sensitive Bébé contrasts with the discreet, mysterious Monsieur Dior. Yet it was love at first sight. “All of Dior is in Bérard, all of Bérard is in Dior. This book is not a two-headed biography — it is a meandering in the heart of a history haunted by dreams, affinities, and secrets sewn in the lining of vanishing time.” Laurence Benaïm* In the 1930s, Christian Dior, then a partner in the Pierre Colle gallery, exhibited the young Bérard’s paintings alongside those of Dalí, Picasso and Matisse. A few years later, when he opened a house in his own name, Christian Bérard gave him his bountiful support. In return, the couturier entrusted Bérard with the decoration of his first boutique, Colifichets, on Avenue Montaigne. Christian Bérard advised him to adorn this initial setting in toile de Jouy – the celebrated signature-print and emblem of French savoir-faire, that would become an iconic Dior reference. “The seeming casualness brought the whole place to life,” Monsieur Dior wrote referring to the work of his friend, ”that arbiter of parties, of all elegance…”. The book Christian Dior, Christian Bérard. Joyful melancholy – sumptuously illustrated with works of art and precious photographs – brings to life the Paris of artists, from the Belle Epoque to the Liberation, from the Boeuf sur le toit to the post-war Café Society. Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions, art and beauty in all their forms. From page to page, they appear in the truth of their purest talent, between triumphs and doubts, promises and secrets.

“Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions”

An ode to friendship and dreams. The book can be purchased at Dior boutiques in New Bond Street and Sloane Street, and also WHSMITH (£30), Amazon (£25), World of Books (£22) and Waterstones (£30). * French journalist, biographer and writer J A N U A RY 2 0 2 4 17

hat do three murderers, Karl Marx’s daughter and a vegetarian vicar have in common? They all helped create the Oxford English Dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary has long been associated with elite institutions and Victorian men; its longest-serving editor, James Murray, devoted 36 years to the project, as far as the letter T. But the Dictionary didn’t just belong to the experts; it relied on contributions from members of the public. By the time it was finished in 1928 its 414,825 entries had been crowdsourced from a surprising and diverse group of people, from archaeologists and astronomers to murderers, naturists, novelists, pornographers, queer couples, suffragists, vicars and vegetarians. Lexicographer Sarah Ogilvie dives deep into previously untapped archives to tell a people’s history of the Oxford English Dictionary. She traces the lives of thousands of contributors who defined the English language, from the eccentric autodidacts to the family groups who made word-collection their passion. ‘SPIRIT OF INNOVATION’ OFFICIALLY THE WORLD’S FASTEST ALL-ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT

R

olls Royce have announced that their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is officially the world’s fastest allelectric aircraft, having set two new world records which have now been independently confirmed. The aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 213.04 km/h (132mph).

24 JANUARY 2024

In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 532.1km/h (330 mph) over 15 kilometres – 292.8km/h (182 mph) faster than the previous record. Both records have been officially verified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation

that controls and certifies world aeronautical and astronautical records. During its record-breaking runs, the aircraft, which is part of the UK Government-backed ACCEL or ‘Accelerating the Electrification of Flight’ project, also clocked up a maximum top speed of 623km/h (387.4mph) making it the world’s fastest allelectric vehicle. The aircraft was propelled on its record breaking runs by 400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain and the most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace. Rolls Royce worked in partnership with aviation energy storage startup Electroflight and automotive powertrain supplier YASA. As well as a stunning technical achievement, the project and world record runs provided important data for their future electric power and propulsion systems for all-electric urban air mobility (UAM) and hybrid-electric commuter aircraft. The characteristics that ‘air-taxis’ require from batteries, for instance, are very similar to what was developed for the ‘Spirit of Innovation’. Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of flying speed record attempts and breaking records, dating back to the Schneider Trophies

of the early 1930’s. The speed achieved by test pilot and RollsRoyce Director of Flight Operations Phill O’Dell in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ was more than 213.04 km/h (132 mph) faster than the previous record set by the Siemens eAircraft powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017. Never before in the history of the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) record attempts has there been such a significant increase in speed over such a short timeframe, highlighting the rapid pace at which the electrification of aerospace is advancing. Electroflight Pilot Steve Jones flew the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft for the 15km record run. All three organisations involved in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ – Rolls-Royce, Electroflight and YASA – share a passion for innovation and through the development process, have learned from the motorsport background of both their partners and from Electroflight’s pace as a start-up. Rolls-Royce have also shared their aerospace expertise, including the rigorous safety and testing methods needed by the civil aviation industry. This combination has helped turn a concept into a world record breaker. The third record of their all-electric aircraft for the fastest time to climb to 3000 metres in a time of 202 seconds, breaking the current record by 60 seconds, is still going through the verification process.

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE South London’s award-winning school looks ahead to an exciting 2024 delighted to be included in the Parent Power Top 100 list this year, moving up 50 places from last year, and just months since the Telegraph’s listing. It is a testament to the incredible journey the College has been on in recent years, and I pay tribute to everyone who’s been a part of that journey, our staff, pupils and parents.’ This summer, St Dunstan’s celebrated recordbreaking A Level results, when compared to non-Covid outcomes, with 86% of all grades achieved being A* - B, and 58% A*- A. Earlier this year, the school was also named ‘Most Progressive Independent School in London’ at the Private Education Awards 2023, after having been awarded ‘Independent Senior School of the Year’ at the Tes Schools Awards in 2022 and ‘Coeducational School of the Year in 2020’ at the Independent Schools of the Year Awards. In January, the school made national news for its forward-thinking Stuart Curriculum, which looks at relationships, skills for the future and critical thinking. Stuart lessons have tackled the rise of toxic masculinity and individuals such as Andrew Tate. Speaking about the lessons, St Dunstan’s Deputy Head Academic, Jonathan Holmes, explained: ‘As well as having the confidence to react to specific examples such as Andrew Tate, it is important that our teaching is predominantly proactive and enables students to independently understand when views are harmful and dangerous, and how they can protect themselves from being exposed

included in the recent Sunday Times Parent Power Top 100 schools list, which brings together the top senior independent and state schools in the country. The listing comes just months after the school was ranked 59th in the country in the Telegraph’s top independent schools for A Level results. Speaking about the news, Head Nick Hewlett said: ‘We are

and influenced by them online.’ St Dunstan’s also brought together educational leaders in June for a groundbreaking conference to tackle the growing teen pornography crisis. More than 100 educational leaders attended the ‘ Let’s Talk About… Porn, Sex and Educating for the Difference’ event at Mansion House, which included keynote speeches by Cindy Gallop, Chanel Contos and Justin Hancock. ‘Our world is changing at breakneck speed. A truly globalised future dominated by AI and biotechnology will require different skills and attributes from the young people we are educating today,’ Nick Hewlett explains. ‘Our social values are more precious to us than ever before, and so are they under threat, as we inhabit a society where the art of rhetoric has diminished and the polarised, entrenched view has consumed us, amplified as it is through the platform of globalised cyber-space. We have a duty to respond to this in the curriculum we offer. ‘I’m proud to lead a school at the forefront of not only education, but one that is brave enough to tackle head on the issues many of our young people face and will continue to do as society moves ahead.’ St Dunstan’s award-winning senior school curriculum builds on the legacy of its founding heads. Students enter the school embarking on a Renaissance education, studying a deliberately wide range of academic subjects whilst proactively developing skills and thinking that will support them for life, and committing to a variety of co-curricular activities in a programme that is embedded into the timetable and structured around the College’s values. Looking ahead to the year ahead, Nick Hewlett adds: ‘The opening vision of the school in 1888 was to be ‘in advance of present time’ and more than 130 years later it is still true. St Dunstan’s never stands still, and we’ve got a lot more planned for 2024. Just watch this space…’ Find out more about St Dunstan’s College at one of their upcoming open events in early 2024. stdunstans.org.uk

Queen Ethelburga’s College & Faculty:

Q

The Top Two York Schools for Academic Results

ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) are celebrating after QE College placed 2nd in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 national school league tables for A Level performance and 17th for overall academic performance; whilst QE College and QE Faculty placed 1st and 2nd in York and 1st and 3rd in the North for A Level performance in the same publication. This means that QE College retains the title of The Sunday Times Top School in the North for Academic Performance for a third consecutive year along with its position as the top school in York for academic results, with QE Faculty also flying high and cementing its place as the premier northern independent school for students wishing to pursue a personalised curriculum to the highest possible standards. Principal, Dan Machin, said of the result, “We are extremely proud of the student achievements in both our senior schools. Offering the choice of provision in QE Faculty and QE College provides students with the chance to excel in whichever route suits them best, and the results speak for themselves after nearly 20 years since QE Faculty was established. To be placed as the top two schools in York for academic performance at A Level is incredible and shows a dedication to excellence by both students and staff.” Head of QE College, Steven Turner, said, “We are absolutely delighted that the College has been recognised as the Independent Secondary School of the Year in the North for Academic Performance for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award is

a testament to the incredible hard work of our diverse and ambitious students, the dedication of our talented staff, and the support of our parent community. Within the College we foster a culture of academic excellence whilst promoting happiness, positive health and an enriching all round student experience. This accolade reflects our commitment to shaping future leaders and building the skills required for lifelong learning. We are proud to be recognised for our outstanding academic achievements, as we strive to be world class in everything that we do.” Head of QE Faculty, Lauren Blakeley, commented, “ I am very proud of what our students have achieved. To be placed 7th in the North of England for overall academic performance is a remarkable accomplishment and something for all students, parents and staff to be immensely proud of. We see the talent and ability of our students every day, but it is fantastic to see their efforts reflected in this accolade. In QE Faculty, we are lucky to have the flexibility to shape each students’ curriculum around their learning styles, interests and aspirations and I believe this has led to these fantastic results because often the most successful students are the happiest ones.” QE is a co-educational independent boarding school based outside of York on a rural estate of 220 acres. It is known nationally for its state-of-the-art facilities, longstanding academic achievement and vast co-curricular options. Privately Educated People Dominate Top British jobs THE STUDY, BY THE SUTTON TRUST EDUCATION CHARITY, SHOWS THAT VIRTUALLY EVERY KEY PROFESSION IS DOMINATED BY PRIVATELY EDUCATED PUPILS GRABBING THE SENIOR MANAGEMENT/ DIRECTOR POSITIONS cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. BALLARD SCHOOL

B

allard is a thriving and welcoming coeducational independent day school for children aged 2 to 16. Set in 34 acres between the New Forest and the Solent on the Hampshire / Dorset border. They are rated ‘Excellent and Outstanding’ in all ISI inspection categories; the highest accolade any school can achieve. They have also been rated a Green Flag Eco School, Sports School Gold, and GL Assessment Centre of Excellence. This academic year alone, Ballard has been a finalist for both Independent School of the Year for Sports (ISOTY) and Highly Commended for Outstanding Performing Arts (ISA). Last year, they were finalists for Excellence and Innovation in Art and Design for their DT provision (ISA); Highly Commended for Outstanding Sport (ISA); finalist for the ISOTY Performing Arts award and shortlisted for their CoEducational Independent School of the Year award for the third year in a row! Ballard’s latest set of GCSE results yet again bucked the national trend, particularly in the highest grades (9-7). Over all subjects and entrants 40.7% achieved these, almost double the national average. In core subjects, there was 100% pass rate (Maths, English Language, and the individual Sciences), with many achieving top grades. 80% of Additional Maths examinations (AS level

36 JANUARY 2024

standard) achieved an A grade! On average, every pupil gained a grade increase of 0.85, incredible added value (grade levels above pupils ‘indicated’ grades). With a pass rate only 2.7% below that of the most academically selective school locally, Ballard is rightly proud of its pupils and teachers, especially given that Ballard does not admit pupils based on test results, as many independent schools do.

“At Ballard we pride ourselves on our forward-thinking curriculum, providing an aspirational, academic and holistic education. Our staff inspire and guide our young people, challenging and supporting them in equal measure. The School’s drive to deliver a first-class education, with a close eye on the future, is shaping our ambitious investment and development plans. Our pastoral care is rooted in kindness and respect, and underpinned by key values with wellbeing central to the ethos of the School. Our inclusive approach to school life values individuality and fosters generosity of spirit; our young people look out for each other and the wider community. Ballard educates the whole child, providing a wide range of sporting, cultural, artistic, and academic clubs and activities. Our aim is to ignite passions and develop skills, identifying and unlocking every child’s inner genius.” – Andrew McCleave, Headmaster. Ballard’s approach of combining a rigorous academic provision with creativity is not only delivering remarkable results, but is also backed by research. Sadly, many schools do not give creativity enough prominence, despite research showing that creativity is not simply great to have, it is an essential human skill, imperative in our technology-driven world. “The pace of cultural change is accelerating more quickly than ever before,” says Liane Gabora, associate professor of psychology and creative studies at the University of British Columbia. “In times of change we need to bump up creativity levels — to generate the innovative ideas that will keep us afloat.” According to an Adobe study, 85% of university educated professionals say creative thinking is critical for problem solving in their careers. An analysis of LinkedIn data found that creativity is the

second most in-demand job skill (after cloud computing), topping the list of character skills companies need most. As automation continues to swallow up routine jobs, those who rely on character skills, such as creativity, will see the most growth. Decades of research have linked creativity with the intrinsic motivation to learn. When pupils are focused on a creative goal, they become more absorbed in their learning and more driven to acquire the skills they need to succeed. When pupils are permitted to unleash their creativity or explore a topic of personal interest, the transformation can be startling. Creativity lights up the brain. Teachers are more likely to observe higher-order cognitive skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking and making connections between subjects in pupils. When creativity is combined with transformative technology, better results ensue. Furthermore, the creative process involves a great deal of trial and error. This productive struggle builds resilience, teaching pupils to push through difficulty to reach success, further enhancing their emotional development. So, if you want to see your child thrive, contact Ballard’s Registrar – registrar@ballardschool.co.uk or call (01425) 626900, to book in for an Open Morning or private tour.

ROYAL REVIEW:

How Kate upped her fashion and beauty game last year The Princess of Wales stepped out in some incredible outfits last year. By Katie Wright.

A

s the royal family’s foremost fashion icon, the Princess of Wales is often in the sartorial spotlight. Aided by assistant Natasha Archer, Kate has continued to evolve her style in recent years, and has impressed royal watchers with her outfit choices in 2023. “Over the last year Catherine, Princess of Wales, has proven she’s equally adept at showstopping glamour for state occasions and formal events, and casual elegance when carrying out charity engagements,” says Caroline Young, fashion writer and author of The Fabulous Frances Farquharson: The Colourful Life of an American in the Highlands. “There may be rules for royal dressing, but Catherine’s style isn’t conservative – she embraces fashion-forward garments from both the high street and haute couture in bursts of colour. “Rather than just keeping it muted with beiges and blues, she often favours warm tones, such as pinks, reds and yellows.” Plus, the royal’s glam squad always ensure her hair and make-up are perfectly suited to her outfit and the occasion. Here, we look back at some of Kate’s most memorable fashion

and beauty moments of 2023… McQueen gown On the Bafta red carpet in February the Princess donned a reworked version of a flowing white Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the 2019 awards, with the corsage on the shoulder replaced with a flowing cape detailing. Kate teamed the dress with black opera gloves and clutch bag, finishing her look with a pair of £17.99 statement earrings from Zara, which instantly sold out. “Kate is keen to prove that you can wear the same dress twice,” Young says. “She’s often described as the queen of recycling in the way she re-wears old favourites, which fits with the environmental ethos that she champions.” Erdem suit Attending the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in March, Kate chose an elegant navy skirt suit with delicate floral embroidery from one of her long-time favourite

designers, Erdem. She paired the two-piece suit with a midnight blue saucer-style hat and had her hair styled in a chic updo that beautifully complemented the ladylike ensemble. Coronation outfit Kate was praised for her stunning outfit at the most high-profile royal event of the year, the coronation of the King. She wore a deep blue Royal Victorian Order mantle edged in scarlet, over an Alexander McQueen embroidered ivory silk crepe dress. In a break from tradition, she decided not to wear a tiara, instead choosing an intricate silver headpiece by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen, with her long brown locks twisted into a neat updo. Spotty dress Kate has worn trendy London-based designer Alessandra Rich several times in the past few years, including for her appearance at the Order of the Garter service in June. The vintage-style spotty white dress, teamed with a navy and white feather-trimmed hat, drew comparisons to Diana, Princess of Wales, who wore a similar outfit to Royal Ascot in 1988.

up her look with a bold new hairstyle. Kate’s tresses were twisted into a braided bun which celebrity hairdresser Edward James described as a “polished Princess Leia” look, referencing the Star Wars character. Purple suit Opting for another sharp suit for the Shaping Us National Symposium in November, the Princess donned a bright purple two-piece by British designer Emilia Wickstead. Young admires Kate’s bold, on-trend look: “Throughout 2023 she’s particularly favoured blockcoloured blazers and trousers in various hues, a look that is smart and on-point but also lends a more casual, approachable feel.”

Pink dress “In June, Kate was on-trend with the blush ‘Ahana’ dress by Beulah worn when she opened the Young V&A,” says Young. “With its tailored bodice and floaty skirt, it was the hit dress of the summer, but she got there first, having worn it two years before, at Wimbledon.” The Princess had her glossy locks styled in bouncy waves for the occasion. Balmain blazer For her first appearance at Wimbledon 2023, Kate – who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club – chose an Eighties-style mint green blazer by glamorous French fashion house Balmain. Tapping into the Wimbledon whites theme, she teamed the double-breasted jacket with a white pleated maxi skirt and court heels. Blazer and twisted braid On a visit to the Orchard Centre in Sittingbourne in September, the Princess rewore a favourite Zara blazer, but switched JANUARY 2024 85

2023:THE YEAR OF THE

ECLECTIC INTERIOR

J

ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free. Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are,

design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highly-textured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...

Colourful Explosion:

Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-thejungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation. 94 JANUARY 2024

The New Nordic:

If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.

Adventurous Sofas:

“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”

The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.

Super Textures:

From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their three-

dimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.

Dazzling Metallics:

Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical. chaplins.co.uk

ANOTHER NOTTING HILL HOME

E

asy Designée have recently completed a total refurbishment of a 4 storey Victorian terraced house on a quiet residential road in Notting Hill, in West London. The extension, refurbishment and remodelling of the house was to provide a modern family home. Our clients wanted to create a warm and comfortable home with modern features and Victorian touches. The house lacked character and personality although it benefited from good structure and delightful daylight.

96 JANUARY 2024

The house was stripped out and remodelled internally creating a sequence of horizontally and vertically interlocking interior spaces. The existing facade to the rear of the house has been rationalised, by replacing the existing conservatory at lower ground floor level with a gull height glass opening to accommodate the new, contemporary kitchen. By subtle changes to the spaces and by adding texture, colour, and fine materials we were able to create a warm, comfortable, and welcoming family home. We have achieved a harmonious and calm aesthetic throughout with modern touches within a timeless design. The existing rear elevation has been rationalised, a conservatory at lower ground floor level replaced with a gull height glass opening and the kitchen relocated to the lower floor. We felt that more could be made of the period features, enhancing some and reinstating others to bring out more of the Victorian feel of the property, showcased in the formal living room, which faces the main street and benefits form plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Our choice of a bold colour feature wall is a direct reflection of the Victorian era, as well as the vivid personality of family, who embraced the audacious design choice right away. The floor to ceiling panelled wall is the main feature of the master bedroom, giving the space tones of greatness. The rest of the furniture and décor is kept natural, to create a relaxing effect. The focal point we have chosen is a colourful painting, scaled to match the size of the furniture and balancing the source of natural lighting. The Garden Design process

A

t Modular we believe garden design is the most exciting of all the design disciplines, but we would say that! As well as a beautifully designed garden being an inviting and practical space it’s increasingly viewed as a haven to immerse ourselves in; somewhere to escape the stresses of everyday life and connect with the natural world. The stats prove it can also significantly add value to your property so investing in it is a win-win. The bigger picture. A garden should work on many levels. Developing a great garden is rewarding for some, but frustrating for others. Perhaps you’ve lived with the same outdoor space for years yet are still way off realising your dream garden or have recently bought a property with a garden or roof terrace and just don’t know where to start? Setting off on the right track with a vision and plan is critical to its success. Good design marries the clients brief (style/function), with the build and planting budget to create a space that is greater than the sum of its parts.

CROWNING GLORY:

CREATING THE PERFECT ROOF

A

beautiful roof can be the crowning glory of a house, and a secure, watertight roof protects everything underneath it. Restoring or replacing a roof requires safe hands, such as those of Hakka Group, a highly skilled and experienced company frequently trusted by the owners of homes of distinction or special heritage, some of them well-known individuals. Hakka Group works across London and the Home Counties, led by its Managing Director Daniel Powell, who took charge after serving for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment where he learned to excel in both leadership and management under extreme pressure. “Most of all, we like to work on roofs of character”, says Daniel, “That means that we often source and use special materials, and our people use just the right tools and techniques. All of our roofing team are highly skilled artisans, including those who renovate and repair brickwork or leadwork. Some of our team started working for my father over twenty years ago! The result is properties that are in keeping with their surroundings, and are a joy to live in. “I worked with my father in his roofing

We put our clients at the centre of any project and give them a first-rate experience. That includes listening to their needs at all stages, explaining options on materials, style, and finish, and being a safe pair of hands. “We source and work with the finest materials, such as lead, slate, and handmade clay tiles. We have worked on projects from individual, Victorian-era dwellings, to whole estates. For example, a project to renew the lead and slate on several Crown Estate properties in Regents Park.” Dan’s company has earned testimonials such as this, “HAKKA Group are wonderful, a tremendous band of brothers. Dan is a superlative leader of men… He does all he can to make working with him and his team a great experience…. He is unlike any roofer that we’ve had… and is just a very nice guy to do business with… they have a very, very high standard of work.” - Lady P, Kent.
