ALL THE FLOWERS ARE FOR ME & PLANTS OF THE QUR’ĀN:

Two ground-breaking art exhibitions. Until Sunday 17 September 2023. Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Kew Gardens

Acclaimed artists Anila Quayyum Agha and Sue Wickison present new works at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Kew Gardens. Exploring themes of faith and cultural exchanges, this tandem exhibition showcases stunning contemporary sculptural work alongside intricate botanical paintings, reflecting the ongoing evolution of art inspired by the natural world.

Pakistani-American contemporary artist Anila Quayyum Agha showcases two stunning pieces as part of the exhibition. All the Flowers Are for Me takes the shape of a large, laser-cut steel cube suspended from the ceiling and is inspired by patterns used in Islamic art and architecture. Filling the gallery space with elaborate floor-toceiling shadow patterns, All the Flowers Are for Me creates a unique experience where visitors can become a living, breathing part of the artwork, in an inclusive, sacred space. The work encompasses ideas of cultural connectedness and peaceful co-existence within the context of an increasingly fractious world.

Alongside this is Stolen Moment Bouquet I and II, a new work which receives its UK premiere at Kew Gardens. Constructed from mirrored stainless steel, this wall-mounted piece is inspired by Great Piece of Turf by the pioneering botanical artist Albrecht Dürer. Running simultaneously is Plants of the Qur’ān, a world premiere exhibition featuring 25 brand-

new botanical paintings of plants referenced in the Qur’ān, displayed for the first time at Kew Gardens. Travelling to various locations in the Middle East, botanical artist Sue Wickison has illustrated plants including garlic, pomegranate, date palms, henna and flowering desert species. Highlighting the cultural, agricultural, and botanical significance of a variety of species, the exhibition allows visitors to engage with these often-everyday plants in new ways, exploring their cultural context alongside their role in modern medicine, as food sources and in gardens around the world. THE TASTING MENU AT 1890 BY GORDON RAMSAY AT

I’m sat on a stool at the American Bar in The Savoy Hotel, in awe of their head bartender, Chelsie Bailey. Rewriting the stereotype for who you might imagine has the most famous bar job in the world, Chelsie brings a fresh explosion of youth and coolness to the delectable drinking space.

Imparting a plethora of cocktail tips (drink a non-alcoholic beer on the side of your cocktails if you want to reduce your alcohol intake; never buy sugar syrup – it’s so easy to make, with a 1:1 ratio of sugar and boiling water, and stir) her enthusiasm is infectious. After discussing my favourite flavour profiles, she serves me an Old Cuban and I have to say, it’s the most delicious cocktail I’ve ever tasted.

Chelsie continues the history making at The Savoy, only the second female to hold the iconic role here since Ada ‘Coley’ Coleman in the early-1900s, her knowledge fizzing about women in the industry.

The Savoy, of course, is renowned the world over. Its 267 rooms and suites offer up elegant Edwardian or art deco style, as well as a bed for the night.

The tasting menu at 1890 by Gordon Ramsay is up there with some of the best. Open only for dinner, t’s the tiniest restaurant I’ve ever eaten in, seating just 26 guests, and overlooks the glorious art deco entrance – ask for the table by the window and you can while away the evening people watching and spotting fancy cars.

Everything about the experience feels special, from my handbag being given its very own stool, to the first taste of Libertine – an English sparkling rosè that is only available to Gordon Ramsay, and the way you’re told what you’re eating as they bring it to the table –there are no menus to peruse and ruin the surprise.

Geometric designs stand out on lit up wall tiles and the copper ceiling is mesmerising, as spirographic patterns twist and turn in the dark, atmospheric lighting.

Named 1890 – the year the legendary French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier joined The Savoy and began creating his culinary legacy, the nine courses delight the senses in every way.

As we tuck into a smoked Cheddar gougère, which disappears the second it enters my mouth, the following contemporary fine dining courses do not disappoint. The Jerusalem artichoke royale with crisp artichoke skin and black truffle arrives in the most beautiful golden egg, and the winter flavours in the bean cassoulet consommé are to die for.

The Royal Windsor Park fallow deer is perfectly pink and paired divinely with a Torres Mas Plana Penedes juicy red wine, from Spain. The elevation of every dish is exquisite, and by the time the pre-dessert and dessert are gobbled up, you might just forget everything you’ve eaten before. The titles of Yorkshire rhubarb melba and hazelnut soufflè don’t come close to describing the heavenly flavours that make silence fall to our table, as we spoon up every last scraping.

SUSTAINABILITY, WILDLIFE AND WEEDS

12 JUNE 2023
THIS YEAR’S SHOW GARDENS LET NATURE DO THE TALKING, AS GARDENING EDITOR HANNAH STEPHENSON DISCOVERS.
HIGHLIGHTS AND TRENDS FROM RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2023:
OUT & ABOUT

Gardens featuring more weeds and less formality have taken centre stage at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, placing more emphasis on letting nature take control.

Native plants and trees, nettles, dandelions and a predominantly green palette of planting feature in many of the 36 show gardens, along with salvaged and upcycled materials. Elsewhere, huge bursts of colour remain in the Great Pavilion, while first-time exhibitors include mushroom growers the Caley Bros.

This year’s show is likely to spark controversy, reckons garden designer Andrew Duff, cochair of the Society of Garden Designers and managing director of the Inchbald School of Design.

“There’s a clear message about sustainability and environmental factors in an aesthetic way. There’s a loss about actually, what is a garden supposed to do?” he says. “Right across the show, the inference is that nature’s taking control… maybe that it’s OK to let weeds grow and let things get a little bit ruinous.

“But at the end of the day, people like a lawn, they like to look after a space – that’s part of being in a garden – and it’s time that we need (to address) that controversy,” Duff adds.

Reflecting on the topic, Matthew Pottage, curator of RHS Garden Wisley, says: “We are having a climate crisis. We do need to garden environmentally sensitively. Is this the place to be showing that? It’s arguably the world’s best flower show, so this is the place.”

5 HIGHLIGHT GARDENS FROM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Centrepoint Garden

Love it or hate it, this garden is likely to cause a stir with its partly demolished house, so-called ‘weeds’ and a fallen tree. Designer Cleve West has admitted it’s a ‘Marmite garden’ – people will love it or hate it.

“There’s a sense of abandonment, which is so clever. Cleve West has done a partly demolished ruined house with the idea of nature taking over,” Duff observes. “He’s saying it’s a metaphor for what it is to be young and homeless. There are nettles and dandelion seedheads. It’s really going to question what beauty is in a plant – and I think we need to have that discussion.”

Nurture Landscapes Garden

If you’re looking to take home some plants with you, be inspired by the beautiful Benton irises in rich shades of pastels and deep yellows which you’ll see in designer Sarah Price’s Nurture Landscapes show garden, inspired by the artist and plantsman Cedric Morris.

“We are having a climate crisis. We do need to garden environmentally sensitively. Is this the place to be showing that? It’s arguably the world’s best flower show, so this is the place”

Memoria and GreenAcres Transcendence Garden

Designers Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson’s garden aims to deliver an uplifting spiritual space, reflecting the emotional experience at the end of life (it’s going to a bereavement site after the show).

“Controversially, they’ve used concrete, but with the idea that this concrete is going to be around for hundreds of years,” says Duff. “It’s not a single use concrete.

“It has a simple palette of planting, is cool and calm and you immediately feel rested. The minimal use of materials and colour palette was really special and a moment of calm in the entire show. It was a relief to get to it,” Duff adds.

Myeloma UK – A Life Worth Living Garden

Top designer Chris Beardshaw’s garden has a much more traditional garden feel, with a structured order in the colourful planting against a backdrop of clipped yew, including peonies and salvias, plus inspired woodland planting.

Horatio’s Garden

Putting wheelchair access at the forefront of their design, Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg (Harris Bugg Studio), have created the eighth garden for the eponymous charity, which builds gardens to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injury.

The wheelchair-accessible space, influenced by the ways of seeing from a bed or a wheelchair, features tactile stone cairn and a table water feature to encourage wildlife, while a garden pod provides a cocooning place for physical and emotional shelter. After the show it will be relocated to Sheffield’s Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injuries Centre.

“There’s an incredible depth of planting, which is mind-blowingly beautiful, and beehives of warm cut stone which kind of replace topiary – they’ve made topiary out of stone,” says Duff.

TOP TRENDS

These are some of the key gardening trends to emerge from this year’s event.

Wildlife

“Unsurprisingly, there’s going to be

14 JUNE 2023 OUT & ABOUT

the awareness of wildlife-friendly planting,” says Pottage. “There’s lots of habitat in gardens, but hopefully showing that can be beautiful as well. There are lots of logpiles, lots of water, lots of native plants, but also lots of gardenesque planting.”

Reclaimed and reused

Crushed concrete, piles of rubble, bare sand, reused bricks and other recycled material dominate many of the show gardens’ pathways and form decorative features in several gardens. There’s a message to get gardeners thinking about how they might reuse materials, which formerly headed for the skip.

“All the gardens have a destination, which is really important,” says Pottage – the show gardens are all being relocated after the show.

Award-winning designer Tom Massey, who has this year designed The Royal Entomological Society Garden, predicts: “Reuse of waste materials is going to be a big thing.”

He uses crushed construction waste in his show garden, including crushed bricks and concrete to create a textured, aesthetic backdrop for the planting along with deadwood. “These waste materials are really good habitat for insects,” he points out.

Plants

People will be encouraged to grow native plants, from hazel to cow parsley, while those seeking colour may go for irises, which are prevalent at this year’s show. There’s also a resurgence of common yew (Taxus baccata) and other familiar plants including a cloud pine, Eleagnus ‘Quicksilver’

Drought-tolerant plants are also being pushed –some 55% of perennials in the show gardens are drought-tolerant, almost double that of last year, including fennel, salvia and cistus.

Weeds

Dandelions and other weeds feature in some of the gardens. Chelsea gold medallist Cleve West notes: “People get their knickers in a twist about weeds but they are the pioneer plants that stitch everything together.

“It’s just getting people to understand that all the things we kill with herbicides and pesticides

can look quite beautiful,” West adds. “Just be more tolerant, and if you have a space where you can let nature take its course, it’s got to be good for wildlife and insects.”

Massey adds: “Dandelions are an early source of pollen and nectar for bees – and insects are in mass decline, so we need to be more considerate in the way we manage and maintain our gardens.”

Sculpture

“We are seeing nature becoming the sculpture,” says Duff, citing designer Sarah Price’s Nurture Landscapes Garden Mediterranean cloud pine. There are pillows of yew in the Memoria and GreenAcres Transcendence Garden.

Nods to the Royal Family abound, from bronze bust of the King in A Garden of Royal Reflection and Celebration, which features some of the Windsor family’s favourite plants including roses and camassia, plus several crowns featuring flora and fauna.

Standing at just under 7m is the biggest driftwood sculpture ever displayed at Chelsea, a Wyvern dragon perched on a tree, the centrepiece of sculptor James Doran-Webb’s exhibit.

And paying homage to the unsung heroines of horticulture at The Monument is the ‘Women in Horticulture’ exhibit honouring the likes of Janaki Ammal, Beth Chatto and Gertrude Jekyll.

Bigging up small spaces

Guy Barter, chief horticulturist for the RHS, says people are likely to be planting bigger trees on their balconies and also using drought-tolerant species. “This year there’s a pollinator section, a wildlife bath, and drought-resistant plants.”

INSTILLING THE LOVE OF LITERACY FROM THE ROOTS OF CHAPTER HOUSE

It is important to instil a love of literacy from an early age as literacy skills span far wider than just picking up a book.

Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate talks through the innovative ways in which they ensure each and every pupil enjoys reading from a young age.

“In Chapter House, literacy and learning is at the heart of everything we do. Time is made every day specifically to enjoy sharing a book together, and each class has a specific time to visit the Chapter House library. This allows them to choose a book they can take home to share with parents and siblings.”

“One of our most successful, and popular initiatives has been the introduction of our reading dog, Indie, especially with our younger children. It has increased the confidence of reluctant readers by having a non-judgemental audience. The children are purely reading for pleasure with no one pointing out mistakes or questioning them on the text. It is an initiative where we have seen their confidence increase and their reading has become more animated, with more expression – one Year 1 child’s reading age has improved by two years over one term, and they are more curious about reading different texts. “

“Year 5 students are encouraged to be librarians, recommending books to their peers, creating displays in the library and using break times to share books with younger pupils. This vital engagement, extends beyond the classroom

with regular parent information meetings on reading, sharing new school initiatives and advice on how they can support their child with reading at home.”

“Chapter House is a vibrant and engaging school that focuses on providing an enabling environment which respects, recognises and tunes into each unique child; central to our mission of ensuring each child can be ‘the best they can be, with the gifts that they have’.”

Children can be either a day student or board at Queen Ethelburga’s from Year 3.

Sir David Attenborough opens Platinum Jubilee

Woodland in Richmond Park

Sir David Attenborough has planted an English oak tree in Richmond Park to officially open the Platinum Jubilee Woodland, a new woodland planted as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative. The woodland has been planted to celebrate and honour the late Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime of service. He was joined by several children from the local area.

The tree, chosen by Sir David, is one of the final few to be planted as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, which concluded on 31 March – the end of the planting season in the UK. The project invited people from across the nation to plant trees in honour of Queen Elizabeth II to mark the Platinum Jubilee and benefit future generations.

A long-time supporter and local resident, Sir David filmed part of his new series ‘Wild Isles’ in the park. Keep an eye out for Richmond Park in episode two, ‘Woodland’, now available on iPlayer.

Sir David Attenborough, Patron of The Friends of Richmond Park charity, and Queen’s Green Canopy Ambassador said: “I am thrilled to be opening this new woodland to honour and celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and life of service. The late Queen was very fond of The Royal Parks and was a great lover of trees, so this is a fitting tribute to her memory. Its creation also

marks the continuing conservation of this protected landscape, and the wonderful wildlife within, so that it can be enjoyed by many generations to come.”

“The Queen’s Green Canopy has created an invaluable national legacy for our children, future generations and the planet itself.”

The woodland provides respite for visitors and creates new habitat to support wildlife, including the endangered white-letter hairstreak butterfly and the cardinal click beetle. The shrubs will also provide shelter and a food source for small mammals and invertebrates.

The woodland was funded by The Royal Parks charity, which manages Richmond Park, alongside generous support from The Friends of Richmond Park, who funded the trees, and players of People’s Postcode Lottery, through a project called ‘Help Nature Thrive’.

As part of their 2030 vision for nature, The Royal Parks charity is working to keep all of the parks healthy and resilient to climate change, maximising their benefits for people and wildlife. royalparks.org.uk

VIP PROTECTION

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.

The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and low-standard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘high-end’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains

consistent at the pinnacle of their trade and the chosen provider to many security-conscious individuals, families, and businesses.

Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.

Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or guntoting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.

John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.

Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

SILVERSTONE FESTIVAL

to celebrate circuit’s 75th anniversary in stunning style

25-27 AUGUST 2023, BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

This summer’s spectacular ‘Silverstone Festival’ will celebrate the world-famous circuit’s 75th anniversary in high octane style with special birthday races, parades and displays to mark this major milestone in British motorsport history. Silverstone Festival (previously known as The Classic) is an epic award-winning event staged at the famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire: birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and home to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix. The event regularly attracts close to 1,000 race entries and draws crowds of more than 100,000.

It was back in October 1948 that Silverstone hosted its very first race meeting, staged on the runways and perimeter roads of a former RAF bomber station (see original 1948 track map below). With the country’s other race circuits such as Brooklands and Donington inoperable post-WWII, Silverstone swiftly established itself as the

home of British Motor Racing – a status it has been proud to hold ever since. That first race meeting back in 1948 was an International Grand Prix featuring all the sport’s top stars and fastest cars and, two years later, Silverstone had the further honour of hosting the very first round of the FIA World Championship for the newly inaugurated Formula One.

Celebrating the glorious past and the circuit’s present as the home of the annual British Grand Prix, Silverstone Festival will put a special spotlight on 75 remarkable years right at the pinnacle of global motorsport. To mark this major milestone, a glittering parade of Grand Prix cars that have raced at Silverstone over the ages will be taking to the track on all three days of the Festival. This incredible ‘moving museum’ will stir memories, honouring past champions and lauding British Grand Prix winners from yesteryear.

The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association will be inviting a

selection of 30 front-engined and 30 rear-engined F1 cars to race and, following one qualifying session on Friday for all 60 entrants, the weekend will witness three not-to-bemissed 20-minute races. One of these will be exclusively for front-engined cars with an evocative field of iconic Aston Martins, Ferraris, Maseratis and Scarabs all doing battle in The 75th Anniversary Grand Prix Trophy for Front Engine GP Cars.

Back in the day, Formula Libre races were always popular at Silverstone – not least as they were often the fastest on the bill – and their re-introduction at the Festival is certain to be another major attraction with a mesmerising mix of great pre-’78 and ground-effect F1, F5000, F2, F Atlantic, F3 and FF2000 cars expected. As well as masterminding the welcome return of Formula Libra, the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) will also be bringing its Roads Sports and Thundersports grids to the Festival, ensuring further variety to a standout 20-race programme, which also includes all the well-established crowd-pleasers.

Ever since the fifties, competition-prepared Jaguars have been huge crowd-pleasers at Silverstone and saluting this long association, the unrivalled roster of retro races at this summer’s Festival also features the Motor Racing Legends Big Cat Challenge Trophy – a showdown for pre-’66 racing Jaguars including early E-types, D-types and C-types plus all XK models as well as Mk1 and Mk2 saloons.

At the other end of the timeline – and celebrating all eras of Silverstone’s distinguished history – the Masters GT Trophy will star a mouth-watering grid of exciting GT supercars that raced between 20072018 with Aston Martins, Audis, Ferraris, McLarens, Mercedes, Lamborghinis and Porsches all to the fore. Another exciting and evocative innovation being unveiled for the 75th birthday party is the addition of an Historic Formula Libre grid, open to a wide range of powerful single-seaters from the sixties and seventies. And that’s not all for car lovers – there will be a classic car auction plus huge showcases of classic cars from over one hundred car clubs, often celebrating important milestones in automotive history.

For those who prefer other activities to enjoy, there will be a Foodie Fest, Funfair, Shopping Village and interactive experiences or you can party all weekend with 3 nights of live music from chart-topping artists McFly, The Christians, ABC & Sugababes.

A wide range of tickets for the 2023 Silverstone Festival are now on sale, including camping and VIP hospitality options.

life-sized bust of the King has been made from more than 17 litres of melted Celebrations chocolates amid the build-up to the coronation.

LIFE-SIZED BUST OF CHARLES MADE FROM MORE THAN 17 LITRES OF MELTED CELEBRATIONS A

The bust – which weighs over 23kg and took four weeks to create – was designed by an expert team of chocolatiers and model makers who carefully planned how to make the profile view of Charles look as close as possible to the image of him which will soon grace stamps, coins and bank notes.

Different chocolates from the confectionery brand have added sweet touches to elements of the bust.

The uniform Charles is expected to wear at the coronation is the same on the sculpture, with the epaulettes – a type of ornamental shoulder piece –embellished with Twix, Milky Way, Galaxy and Bounty Celebrations chocolates.

One of the iconic confectionery brands’ favourites – Maltesers Teasers – have been used on the collar, with the medals on the chest of the bust featuring chocolates including Snickers.

Chocolatier Jennifer Lindsey-Clarke had the honour of constructing the “tasty” creation, which was made using roughly 2,875 melted Celebrations chocolates.

“The team studied hours of footage of the King to capture his true likeness and the resemblance is uncanny”, said Emily Owen, senior brand manager for Celebrations.

“Celebrations is all about bringing people together and we are thrilled to be sharing this occasion with so many chocolate lovers up and down the country.”

The sculpture will be on display at Mars Wrigley UK’s headquarters in Slough. The piece was specially commissioned by Celebrations, who are also to launch a limited-edition coronation tub to mark the event, which will be available in select Tesco stores.

Wimbledon is the oldest and one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. It is one of the four Grand Slam events, along with the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open.

Novak Djokovic is the defending champion and has won Wimbledon six times and widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Iga Swiatek is the rising star of women’s tennis and won the French Open in 2020. She has had a solid start to her 2023 season, reaching the quarter-finals of Adelaide and Melbourne. She is young and hungry for more success.

Taking place at the magnificent All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon since 1877, it is a quintessentially British experience. The Tournament attracts around 500,000 spectators, including members of The Royal Family and celebrities, plus more than a billion viewers across 200 nations.

All England Lawn Tennis Club continues to invest in the improvement of the facilities at the Qualifying Competition. This year, a new 700-seat Show Court has been constructed in a more central location at the venue, which has also seen the creation of relocated practice courts, and an increase in overall

daily spectator capacity to 3,000. Tickets for the Qualifying Competition are on sale now at £15 each.

Ticketholders will be able to enjoy the enhancements made in the Southern Village, the section of the Grounds running between No.2 Court and the Rosewater Pavilion. Ticket integrity will continue to be of the utmost importance, with strictly

This summer’s

SUNGLASSES TRENDS

UPDATE YOUR LOOK WITH THESE FASHIONABLE FRAMES, SAYS KATIE WRIGHT.

The quintessential summer accessory, sunglasses are the perfect finishing touch for any outfit – whether you’re hanging out at home or jetting off on holiday.

When it comes to eyewear, trends move fast, so what frames are in fashion this season?

As we head towards hotter days, these are the five key sunglasses trends to know about…

OVERSIZED FRAMES

The coolest way to rock oversized sunnies this season is with sleek square frames, as seen at designer brands such as Celine and Prada. Opt for black or white opaque frames for an understated-luxe look or choose jewel tones to bring a Seventies glam feel.

SPORTY

Trendsetter Kim Kardashian now favours sporty sunglasses to top off her looks. Throw it back to the Nineties and Noughties with narrow, wraparound sunnies with retro denim or tailored outfits.

NARROW FRAMES

As seen recently on the likes of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, narrow rectangular sunglasses are a big hit with celebs and models at the moment. These eyebrow-revealing frames are a subtle way to nod to the Nineties and a stylish option if you don’t suit oversized square styles.

WHITE FRAMES

In contrast to classic black, this season’s white sunglasses are all about making a strong style statement. From narrow Nineties-inspired styles to big oval frames, go bold with your monochrome sunnies.

TORTOISESHELL

Loving the spring/summer Seventies trend? Then you need a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses to complete your look. Channel disco-glam with super-sized frames in natural tones, or add a pop of pink.

FACE THE SUN

‘Use sunscreen every day’ is the ultimate skincare commandment. Dermatologists and beauty buffs alike agree that protecting your face from harmful UV rays – while simultaneously preventing wrinkles – should be a priority for everyone.

“Skin is the body’s first line of defence from everyday external aggressors which damage your skin such as UV rays,” says Prof Christian Aldridge, consultant dermatologist for LifeJacket Skin Protection.

“The damage from these can have cosmetic, physical and long-term health consequences. At best, it can age your skin and cause you discomfort but at worst, can give you a skin disease you really don’t want.”

That’s why daily protection of your skin is critical, particularly on those areas that are exposed to the sun regularly, such as your face. But in spite of all the warnings we receive, the message isn’t getting through to everyone.

A new survey from LifeJacket and Melanoma UK found that 10% of respondents rarely use SPF, while one in 20 says they never use it.

To make it more likely you’ll stick to a daily habit, finding a product you love can be a huge help – attempting to rub a thick, chalky cream into your skin is not the answer.

The good news is, facial sunblocks have come a long way, and there’s a whole new batch of lightweight but effective lotions, serums and gels that are a delight to use – and many of them are under the £20 mark.

“To adequately protect your face, I recommend 5ml (about a teaspoon) of SPF of at least 30 every day,” says Aldridge.

“Especially during the months of April to September, to ensure long-term skin protection. Application should be repeated if outside for long periods or undertaking exercising in the light.”

The Multi-Ceramide Powered Skincare Boosting The Skin’s Natural Barrier Function

Born out of real need, Darkkins is a Health Visitor founded clean and cruelty free skincare brand that creates products to effectively repair and maintain the skins natural barrier.

In the UK alone, studies show that 1in 10 Adults and 1 in 5 Children are affected by some form of dryness of the skin resulting in the weakening of the skins natural barrier.

As s student Health Visitor, Jocelyn, our founder, quickly observed that dry skin and eczema related questions were one of the top questions families asked when they attended clinic.

They would normally talk about their frustration of not finding non- steroidal products that really worked for them.

Wondering why there were so many products on the market and yet these families needs were not met, Jocelyn sought to fill the gap in the skincare market..

Many years on, after extensive research and working with a British Cosmetic Chemist, the Darkkins Intense Moisturising Body Cream was birthed.

At Darkkins, we are guided by using premium scientifically proven ingredients that Repair, Soothe and Maintain the skin’s natural barrier AND eliminate ones that cause potential irritation to the skin such as fragrance, dyes, petrochemicals, sulphates etc

As one ages and through sun damage, together with skin conditions, the quality and quantity of ceramides reduce. This can lead to a skin barrier, causing dry, rough skin, wrinkles, redness, irritation and dehydration.

Ceramides in skincare help seal in moisture, protect the skin from external hazards, strengthen your skin’s barrier and improve hydration. This results in smoother and firmer skin,

reduced fine lines and wrinkles, relieve dry skin, soothe and ease irritation. For all skin types, best for Sensitive, Dry, Mature or Eczema prone skin.

‘’Our mission at Darkkins is to create effective skincare using scientifically proven ingredients that repair and boosts the skin’s natural barrier’’. darkkins.com

OCCASIONWEAR TRENDS for wedding season

Wedding season is almost here, and with a surplus of ceremonies taking place due to the continuing pandemic backlog, you might have quite a few celebrations to attend. That means you’ll need outfits – and what’s more fun than getting dolled up for a special occasion? When it comes to occasionwear, spring/summer is all about joyous colour and texture –perfect for partying from day to night. From dresses and suits to shoes and bags, these are the trends every wedding guest needs to know about…

SLIP DRESSES

The Nineties classic – a favourite of Kate Moss during her supermodel heyday – made a comeback on the SS23 catwalks as part of the boudoir dressing trend. Maxi and midi slip dresses in pastel and sunset shades are more weddingfriendly than the super-short laceedged kind – they’re also a chic option for bridesmaids.

RETRO FLORALS

Flower power never goes out of style, and this season is all about hippie-inspired prints in the brightest hues. Look for retro detailing too –think halter necks, balloon sleeves and babydoll silhouettes.

STATEMENT SUITS

Two-piece tailoring is what the coolest guests will be rocking this wedding season – and we don’t just mean the

GO BOLD WITH BRIGHT HUES AND SPARKLY ACCESSORIES, SAYS KATIE WRIGHT.

guys. From the timeless jacket and trousers combo to short suits and blazer dresses, make sure yours is in a statement shade or bold print.

RUFFLES

As seen on the catwalks at Richard Quinn, Molly Goddard and Chanel, ruffles are big news – literally – this season, with voluminous tulle and feathers galore. Go all-out with oodles of 3D froth or keep it simple with some soft, flowing frills.

EMBELLISHED HEELS

Accessorise your statement suit or frilltastic frock with a pair of blingy heels. Wear a pastel dress with bejewelled courts in a contrasting tone or add metallic sandals to a tailored look –these embellished beauties will give you lots of mileage throughout spring and summer.

BEADED BAGS

Complete your look with a vintage-inspired beaded clutch bag. Decorated with intricate pearls and sequins, these pretty purses are just big enough to hold all your wedding day essentials.

Milan Trend Report 2023

Illuminating the streets, showrooms, salons, patios, parlours and palazzos of Italy’s style capital, Milan’s inimitable furniture fair Salone del Mobile got its glorious groove on last month, as the interiors glitterati from around the globe descended. With the air humming with anticipation and energy, there were unveilings at every turn as the industry’s most luxury brands presented pieces that will come to define the next interiors season.

Our homes have come a long way since we were last here. Namely, we spent 2022 throwing the doors open and letting nature in, from every bucolic colour to organic shapes and new foundin-nature materials, creating a soothing, sometimes ethereal, mood. This

year? Things are ramping up. Statement colour is here, bringing with it doses of joy, happiness and hopefulness. Textures are growing bolder, adding playful twists to elegant pieces, and shapes have taken a turn for the whimsical. Our homes are becoming places which make us smile – while remaining stunningly beautiful and carefully considered, of course. It’s an elusive balance, but one which is merged into individual designs to make curation all the easier and more enjoyable.

TEXTURES

Chunky Boucle

There is boucle and then there’s heavy, oversized, statement boucle, and it was big, brazen bumps that dominated Salone del Mobile 2023’s upholstery. A way to give life to neutral shades and add extra oomph to colours, bold boucle says, ‘Here’s where the funs at,’ inviting hands to nestle in and explore. With the larger looped pieces in the fabric creating a thicker texture and deeper shadows, the oversized boucle gives a light-hearted wink to whatever it’s covering, be it framed with an exquisite piece of crafted walnut or topped with bright, furry cushions.

Ridges

Playful and nostalgic, these happy shades remind us of our youths and bring intense splashes of energy inside. Introduction on simplistic designs big and small which let the colour itself create impactful bursts of joy and positivity.

THE DETAILS

Chaplins Furniture, 477 – 507 Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Middlesex HA5 4JS 020 8421 1779 sales@chaplins.co.uk

Creating subtle yet characterful decoration, ridged markings and upholstery hit Salone hard, with furniture and accessories alike adorned with subtle stripes cut into solid materials and tailored onto the soft. Instantly adding a threedimensional effect and forming a layer of shadows, ridges pull the eyes into them, highlighting the contrast they create and inviting you to re-examine their base material. The overall effect is one of craft and delicacy, the lines emerging gradually to form a pattern that’s simple and striking.

Textured Glass

The ambience this year is hazy, dreamlike and illusory as textured glass takes over, casting beautiful, almost watery, shadows which transform a room into something ethereal and otherworldly. From textures embodying the organic to gentle patterns, in furniture, large textured glass slabs create the illusion of water frozen midmovement, while lighting is embracing ever-so distorted glass shades, throwing a layer of mystery over their surroundings come nightfall.

COLOURS

Primary Tones

At the top of the brightness scale this year are vivid, primary tones as interior design trends for 2023 take a turn for the kaleidoscopic.

Mediterranean Tones

Sunkissed, Mediterranean, earthy tones are where it’s at for colour that makes a statement without being too dazzling. Green has been the darling of the interiors world for several seasons as we’ve sought to become more grounded, and this year a rich olive has emerged as the trending tone. Falling somewhere between neutral and bold, it speaks not only of nature but of tempting warmer climes and endless lazy days. Sun-baked terracotta red also dominated, the brick-like tone conjuring even more tranquil images of tiled roofs disappearing into the horizon. And relax.

Dusky Pink

For something colourful as well as calming, it’s dusky pink all the way. Suspended between pink and grey, this isn’t a sickly, classically pretty tone, but rather a dash of sweetness to top off a room. Used on accent pieces: a chair here, a cushion there, maybe the odd sofa – the hazy shade creates a slightly dreamlike feel, a sense of whimsy that’s at once delicate and daring.

Tan Upholstery

Smooth, buttery soft, tan leather is all we’ll be sitting on this year. A tempting toffee tone took over sofas, chairs and upholstery in general across Salone, its laid-back vibe nodding towards the 70s and drawing attention to the beauty of shapes, tailoring and material combinations. With more punch than beige, think of it as an easyyet-statement neutral, its milky, flat white-esque shade relaxed as well as elegant.

We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese trends – and more! – to our curated collection of designer greats both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London. Want to get ahead of the crowd? Contact our Design Team to start your design journey, today.

PICTURE PERFECT ART LIGHTING

There are various light sources available to do this, however using an adaptable and maintainable lensed LED system is by far the best option. Historically, halogen lamps and tungsten filaments have been used but with the development of LEDs over the last 10 years this is the way to go now.

High CRI lensed LEDS will remove damaging heat and UV whilst extending the life by up to 50X longer, giving a greater coverage, bringing out the richer colours and increasing the texture & definition in your art.

Not all LED Art Lights are the same and I will go through the key points that need to be considered when selecting them.

Colour temperature

This is very important when lighting art. Most pieces should be lit with a 2700K warm white light to bring out the rich colours within the piece. Cooler colour temperatures can be used, but these are rare.

Colour rendering index (CRI)

When lighting art you want to use the highest CRI that you can. 98 CRI is currently the highest LED level in the marketplace and will allow the rich reds and blues to show their true colours as well as adding depth and definition to your paintings.

LED lensing & spacing

This will be determined by the canvas dimensions with a spacing of up to 10” each with pre-selected lensing as required from say 15 through to 60 degrees to give a uniform coverage across the canvas. This will remove the points of glare, hotspots and low light levels experienced with older technology. Over illuminated areas will cause long-term damage to your painting.

Lighting levels

Dependent on the composition of the art, examples are sketches, water colours, oils, pastels and acrylics, different intensities of light will be required for each. An oil painting should be lit at <200Lux whereas a paper sketch should not exceed 50Lux. These can be controlled by dimming or other screening methods.

Picture surface

Artwork can be open to the elements or behind glass (standard or anti-glare). The position and angle of the head can remove all reflective points when lighting a painting with glass.

Art light head

The width of the head should not be more than 10-12” less than the canvas width to ensure the edges are lit. If it looks too small, it probably is. To the rear of the

98 JUNE 2023 HOME & GARDEN
When lighting artwork there are many factors to consider to gain the perfect viewing experience and light the entire canvas well.
“Good picture lighting makes such a difference. Only when fine art is lit correctly can you truly fully appreciate it”

art light should be a swivel knuckle. This will allow the cowled front to conceal the lightsources from view. Multiple art light heads can be used successfully to light very wide paintings although single heads of up to 120” are available from some suppliers if required.

Picture head style

The two most popular styles are the fixed or variable position LED art lights with the variable giving greatest flexibility and thus a far superior coverage. This would have a rail system in and would allow lensed LEDs to be attached as required to light any canvas size.

Arms

Properly sized arms are required to position the head at the correct height and projection for the painting.

LED drivers

Careful selection and positioning is required here to ensure the driver runs at a low temperature and doesn’t damage the artwork if attached to the frame.

Picture Light Colours & Finishes

Many options are available, and your selection should complement your artwork.

To conclude, when art is lit correctly it makes such a difference. There are many options available in the marketplace, but many do not consider all the above details. As you can see it is not easy to light a fine painting well. You need to consider how to cover the entire canvas evenly at the right intensity, not too bright, in the right colour temperature and with the highest colour rendition possible. All these points together will bring out the texture and rich colours in the artwork. Only when fine art is lit correctly can you truly fully appreciate it. So many clients have told me that although they had looked at a painting for years, had never noticed a feature in the painting such as an animal, a facial

expression, or some other hidden gem until it was lit well. This happens all the time and that is why it is so important to light your art correctly. Being able to see all those finer details within your painting will make you appreciate it even more.

You don’t have to use art lights to light your art, but if you do, make sure you consider all these points.

If I can be of further assistance in helping you here, please do make contact.

YOU HAVE INSTALLED A BEAUTIFUL NEW POOL - WHAT NEXT?

London Swimming Pool Company has been designing, building, refurbishing and servicing luxury swimming pools and spas for over 30 years, so we know what comes next!

Dedicated engineers

Pool safety

First class service

If you decide to work with London Swimming Pool Company, you will receive a bespoke Service Level Agreement that sets out our mutual responsibilities. This will include details of the work to be undertaken on the pool during each visit, frequency and length of visits, cost and our security and privacy policy.

No two pools are the same. They vary in building materials, size, shape, location, plant room equipment, water treatment system, frequency of use and bather load, so every pool requires specific care and attention. That means a tailored servicing plan for every pool to ensure they remain in excellent condition all year round.

The first step to properly caring for your pool is a site visit to assess its needs. One of our qualified, experienced pool engineers will visit and inspect your pool and the plant room equipment thoroughly, assessing its individual requirements and will then advise you on what is required. This will include a proposal for regular servicing as well as easy-to-follow steps on testing the pool water to ensure it remains healthy in between visits from your dedicated servicing engineer.

Specialist servicing

Pool servicing is a specialist job carried out by skilled engineers who not only do the run-of-the-mill tasks but take steps to prevent problems from occurring with the pool water, plant and structure of the pool.

Regular servicing ensures that your pool will always be ready for use. Working with our team of specialists will ensure that any minor issues are dealt with immediately and that risk signals are identified early, avoiding costly expenditures in the future. While equipment may look clean and shiny to the untrained eye, something may not be working optimally. Professional help will ensure everything is always functioning well and safely.

It is essential to know the basic principles of pool safety and hygiene. As the pool owner, you should be aware of areas such as chemical levels, water temperature, use of a pool cover and general cleaning - mistakes can be detrimental to bathers. You can learn more about your pool’s specific requirements from your dedicated service engineer.

Revitalising older pools

Older pools need the same level of servicing care and attention as new pools and may even benefit from plant upgrading. If you have a much older pool that is frayed around the edges, our Refurbishment Team can transform it into a modern pool, finished in the latest materials, accessories and energy-efficient plant room equipment. LIVING COPPER ADDS A DAZZLING NEW DIMENSION TO SWADLING BRASSWARE

110 JUNE 2023 HOME & GARDEN

Anew arrival to the Swadling Brassware family provides a contemporary twist on classic shower fittings.

Living Copper adds an intriguing extra option alongside more established favourite finishes, such as chrome and brass. Putting copper in the spotlight – instead of its usual role as concealed pipework – the new collection delivers a truly different dimension in colour and tone. Its opulent pinkish hue is at once eye-catching yet understated, transforming the look and feel of any bathroom space.

Living Copper adds instant warmth to a bathroom and works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional bathroom designs. It complements warm pastels and offers a wonderful contrast to cool, light marble surfaces and looks particularly striking against a dark tiled backdrop.

As the name suggests, Living Copper has a living quality that changes and evolves over time, contributing to its unique appearance. The uncoated copper will oxidize into a finish known as a patina, which protects the metal from corrosion. Each piece of Living Copper reacts uniquely to its environment, ageing gracefully and developing its own character and variations in tone over time.

PERFECTLY BRITISH NAUTICAL HOMEWARE FROM DESIGNER VICTORIA EGGS

Ideal for beachy picnics, alfresco summer dining, and bringing a slice of seaside charm into homes up and down the country, Victoria Eggs’ nautical collection is inspired by time spent along Britain’s coastlines.

The collection highlights a nostalgic and whimsical view of the seaside serving as a reminder of everything you love about holidays in the UK. The motif includes deck chairs, sticks of rock, beach huts, ice creams and even a resident sea gull! What could be more British?

As with all of Victoria’s other collections, each item is hand-crafted in the UK. The Fine Bone China ceramics are made from the finest Cornish clay, and the textiles are printed onto unbleached cotton using plant dyes to ensure that they’re planet-friendly.

The collection includes a mug, tea towel, coasters, magnets, oven glove, pot grab, apron, egg cup, ½ pint jug, cosmetic bag, and two canvas bags.

Hand-drawn homeware by awardwinning British designer Victoria Eggs, made in the UK.

Victoria Eggs homeware is born from Great-British moments; the nostalgic whiff of salt and vinegar-y chips at the seaside, quirky colloquialisms, our Royal family, London. We’re as British as the cuppa. In fact we’ve a day dedicated to celebrating our favourite brew.

#teatuesday

All our products are handillustrated by Victoria, and lovingly made in the UK. Our mugs (tea tastes better in a Victoria Eggs Mug BTW), are hand-crafted and decorated in Staffordshire, using traditionally mined Cornish Clay. And our textiles come from Lincolnshire, printed with water-based ink (which has virtually no impact on the environment).

“All my designs are snapshots of special moments in time we wish to cherish forever and gift to those we love most.”

APÉRITIF PLEASE

Aperol, come at me. Citrus-y spritz, you’re mine. Campari and soda, yes and yes. Mix up a trending tipple and get sipping against a backdrop of mix-andmatch garden tiles. There’s no better way to set the sundowner scene.

few seconds before sunset. Get snapping. Get hash tagging.

STAYCATION

Cobalt blue x surf white. Pomelo yellow x basketweave beige. Consider your jet set palette covered all without boarding the plane. This summer, let your tiles take you there.

Guy Meno is a British painter known for his remarkable skill with an artist knife, specializing in abstract impressionism. His talent has been recognized internationally, with exhibitions of his work held in prestigious art destinations such as Basel, Switzerland, and London, United Kingdom

“As a choreographer, I organize color’s movement within space. The space’s proportions frame the action of color in a very unique and unexpected way, amplifying or shrinking different aspect of the painting. Through the use of hyper-colorful, shining, and overwhelming abstract arrangements, I depict and investigate the distorted perception of the reality around me, aiming to express my feelings and daydreams through work that wants to be felt, walked in front of, stared at, and dwelt on, rather than merely be illustrative.”
