Sunseeker full speed ahead with an expansive new product development plan

In many ways, 2021 was a record-breaking year for local global luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker. Growth in demand for yachts, both in the charter and ownership market, has seen a boom in the industry. Sunseeker has remained adaptive to the market trends shaping the everyday lives of its customers and record sales were made in 2021 following the return of international boat shows, building on a forward order book worth more than £0.5 billion. The emergence of new lifestyle trends and a continuing demand for innovation saw Sunseeker continue its three year £35m investment to accelerate new product development with innovation,

luxury and performance at the heart of every single model. Last year, Sunseeker launched seven new models in total. The Sunseeker ‘Famous Five’ campaign started the year which saw a virtual global launch, hosted by Hugh Bonneville. Models included the dynamic Predator 55 EVO™, the spacious Manhattan 55, the exhilarating 65 Sport Yacht, an opulent 88 Yacht and the truly innovative 90 Ocean. Other launches included two special edition 74-foot XPS models benefitting from enhanced interior styling and an aftgalley version of the exceedingly popular 76 Yacht. All new models are designed to accommodate increased interior living and work spaces to facilitate prolonged time on-board in privacy and seclusion. The all-new Predator 65 that launched in January of this year is a low-profile, performance lead model that promises an exhilarating driving experience with Volvo Penta IPS drives and intelligent joystick control. The 65-foot model offers peak performance, comfort, efficiency and manoeuvrability. Complete with 35-knot capability, she will provide a one-of-a-kind driving experience in luxurious surroundings. from the master stateroom, something that will revolutionise this segment. After much speculation on social media, Sunseeker will also see the return of an icon this year, the Superhawk 55. Reinvented to appeal to the modern boater, the Superhawk 55 has space, speed and sleek lines with that all-important nod to Sunseeker’s racing heritage. It has a real premium automotive feel with impressive stainless-steel detailing and a design flair that touches every part of the boat. The new centre-line triple helm is a first for Sunseeker and delivers an open-plan arrangement with easy, same level side deck access from pantograph doors port and starboard, as well as internal access below deck via a companionway hatch on the starboard side. The in-house design team continue to evolve the Sunseeker product range with new and exciting features, silhouettes and technologies. They remain on target to double the range to 22 boats by 2023, certainly one of the most comprehensive and innovative model ranges available in the market today. Recognising its customer’s desire to spend more time on the water using a multitude of water sports equipment, it has pioneered the Beach Club concept integrating larger garages and platforms. These allow owners to store a tender, jet skis, SeaBobs, paddleboards,

diving equipment and more for family and friends to enjoy. With innovation at the core of all models, features like X-TEND™ convertible seating are re-imagining how the entertainment spaces are used on board our larger Yacht models; transforming at the flick of a switch from rearward facing at Beach Club level to forward facing at cockpit level. It comes as no surprise therefore, that many of the new models have won internationally recognised awards for this exceptional new design direction and the industry-leading technological innovations found on board. Sales Director Spencer Brown from Sunseeker Poole commented “Boating has never been more popular. We have been delighted to welcome existing and new clients to the Sunseeker range from across the UK, including many local to Poole. Enzo Ferrari

1962 Monaco Grand Prix

YEARS of

FERRARI 18 JANUARY 2022

T

“Even today, stunningly beautiful cars, each one completely unique, continue to emerge from the same Maranello factory gates”

he company’s story officially began in 1947 when the first Ferrari emerged from the historic factory entrance on Via Abetone Inferiore in Maranello. The 125 S, as it was known, embodied the passion and determination of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. To date Ferrari’s most important sporting successes include 15 F1 World Drivers’ Championships, 16 F1 World Constructors’ Championships, 14 Sports Car Manufacturers’ World titles, nine wins at 24 Hours of Le Mans, eight at the Mille Miglia, seven at the Targa Florio and 226 victories in F1 Grand Prix. The legendary symbol used by Ferrari has heroic origins. It was first adopted as a personal emblem by a highly decorated Italian World War I pilot, Francesco Baracca, who had it painted on the fuselage of his aircraft. At the end of the war, Baracca’s parents offered to allow Enzo Ferrari to use the Cavallino Rampante (Prancing Horse) symbol. He adopted it as the logo for his racing Scuderia, placing it on a yellow shield in honour of his hometown of Modena and topping it with the Italian tricolour. The classic Ferrari red, however, was simply the colour assigned by the International Automobile Federation to Italian grand

prix cars in the early years of the last century. Even today, stunningly beautiful cars, each one completely unique, continue to emerge from the same Maranello factory gates. Ferrari offers clients not simply an infinite choice of colours but also an endless selection of materials, treatments and finishes. Thanks to their Carrozzeria Scaglietti and Special Trim and Equipment programmes, every single Ferrari is unique. Clients are also invited to virtually configure their car at their dealership so that they can have a full preview of what their choices will look like. http://auto.ferrari.com/en_EN

THE AWARD WINNING FERRARI DEALERSHIP IN LYNDHURST

20 JANUARY 2022

O

pened in 1988 by John butt and his two sons Warren and Glenn, Meridien was originally created with the specific idea to deal with motor cars that interested them. The ethos was to only buy a car (to sell) you would actually want to buy yourself personally. And so, they did – concentrating on the models of cars which were desired by them and usually were prized in the marketplace. Ranging from the ubiquitous late 80s Golf GTI’s and Ford XR3i to top of the line Mercedes, BMW, Bentley and Rolls Royce and every sports, classic and supercar in between Meridien soon acquired a reputation as the place to go for a top spec low mileage used car. But there was always a brand that held a great reverence with Meridien – Ferrari. The father and sons team can each tell you what model their first drive of the famous brand was, right down to the colour and specification. The reason is simple, “you always buy a Ferrari with your heart” and therefore these first Ferrari experiences are indelible in the brain as they are stored there with other great emotions. Growing the business in the early 1990’s another famous Italian brand, Maserati, came into the sights of the firm and Meridien became the U.K sole importer. With Maserati being from the same motor city of Modena in Italy as Ferrari, the two brands eventually joined forces in 1999 to become Ferrari Maserati SpA. This required the then Ferrari importer to become the Maserati importer too – which worked brilliantly for the New Forest based company. Relinquishing the import rights for Maserati meant that a Ferrari Official Dealership could be opened in Lyndhurst, something that twelve years prior was but all but a dream. But as Enzo Ferrari, who had a great multitude of one-line deep thoughts said…. …“if you dream it, you can do it”. Fast forward to November 2018 and Meridien Modena Ferrari became Global Ferrari dealership of the year, an achievement to add to the awards of Global Showroom of the year (2014) and Global Aftersales Dealer (2017) coming ahead of over 230 other dealers in the world. Previous awards for the sales and service centre are beautifully polished Ferrari V12 and V8 motors that are kept as trophies in the showroom and service reception areas. The 2018 award was slightly larger – a 2002 ex Michael Shumacher Ferrari Formula 1 car! Ferrari continues to delight and surprise all at the Lyndhurst dealership, clients and staff alike. The current range of cars includes Roma, Portofino, SF90, SF90 Spider, 296 GTB, 812 GTS and a newly unveiled ICONA (icon) series car the SP3 Daytona. What does your favourite Royal Park mean to you?

KENSINGTON GARDENS

T

he last 18 months has seen the parks become an even more essential backdrop to our lives, offering a sense of normality in a changing world and at times being literally the only places to go. This winter, Royal Parks are asking for your donations to support their work caring for the nature, landscapes and rich heritage that make the Royal Parks what they are for everyone who needs them. From boating lakes to birdsong, grand gardens to kids’ playgrounds, visit the parks today and find your escape from city life.

HYDE PARK

Once the hunting ground for Henry VIII, this large royal park is best known for its famous Speakers’ Corner and Serpentine Lake, home to waterfowl and oarsmen. The Lido only opens for the summer, but the Swimming Club is open all year round so brave folk can swim in frigid waters, sometimes as cold as 4C. 32 JANUARY 2022

Covering an area of 265 acres, Kensington Gardens is planted with magnificent trees and ornamental flower beds. It is a perfect setting for Kensington Palace, the Albert Memorial, Peter Pan statue and the Serpentine Gallery. Did you know? you can pick up tips for growing fruit and vegetables from the park’s very own allotment which is also home to a number of chickens.

ST JAMES PARK

St James’s Park includes The Mall and Horse Guards Parade, and surrounded by landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Whitehall. The park’s famous flower beds are a familiar backdrop to pageants including Trooping the Colour, as well as state visits and other ceremonial occasions. Enjoy impressive views of the lake and fountain, watch the resident pelicans at feeding time, or while away a sunny afternoon in a deckchair.

THE REGENT’S PARK

‘Regent’s Park’ covers 197 hectares, consisting of formal gardens, shrubberies, sports pitches, rough grassland, a large lake, small enclosed wood and a canal. Regents Park also houses various structures and organisations, including the iconic ZSL London Zoo. Walk through the elegant flowerbeds in the Avenue Gardens, see more than 12,000 roses in Queen Mary’s Gardens, or hire a rowing boat and join the ducks on the boating lake.

RICHMOND PARK

One of London’s most breathtaking landscapes, the 1,012-hectare space is made up of woodland, grassland and ponds attracting hedgehogs and bats hibernating in winter. But the park is best known for its 630 wild red and fallow deer. Discover the Isabella Plantation woodland gardens, refuel at Pembroke Lodge tea rooms and enjoy distant views of St Paul’s Cathedral from King Henry’s Mound.

BROMPTON CEMETERY

The Grade I listed Brompton Cemetery is the well-loved resting place of over 200,000 people and a haven for wildlife. Nestled among the spectacular trees and undergrowth are over 35,000 gravestones and monuments with the amazing stories of all the people buried there since the 1830s, including some well-known names like Emmeline Pankhurst and John Snow.

THE GREEN PARK

‘Green Park’ is a peaceful refuge; a triangle of mature trees and grasslands, offering a quiet retreat from city life, right next to Buckingham Palace. Visit a range of memorials, fountains and statues and look out for Royal Gun Salutes when ceremonial guns are fired to mark special royal occasions.

34 JANUARY 2022

GREENWICH PARK

The 74-hectare space is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it overlooks the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Naval College. It is an amazing mix of 17th century landscape, stunning gardens and a rich history that dates back to Roman times and a small herd of Fallow and Red deer. There’s also a children’s playground where kids can run around and exhaust themselves.

YOUR GIFT TO THE ROYAL PARKS Whatever personal connection you have with your Royal Parks, your gift will go towards conserving and improving the 5,000 acres of parkland in our care, impacting the lives of millions of people each year. When other locations were forced to close, Royal Parks worked even harder to make sure they were there for everyone who needed them, providing free access to nature, playgrounds and spaces to exercise, all while managing biodiversity and preserving the landscapes’ rich heritage. That work never stops, with park teams out and about all year round tending to the special places that have become like a second home for many.

BUSHY PARK

At over 1000 acres, Bushy Park lies just north of Hampton Court Palace and is famed for its mix of waterways, gardens, and roaming herds of red and fallow deer. Visit the Upper Lodge Water Gardens, a historic gem hidden away in the north of the park. See if you can spot the arresting birdlife, from kingfishers to kestrels. And enjoy a walk in the peaceful Woodland Gardens.

The History Of

JIMMY CHOO

WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY OF JIMMY CHOO, RISING FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS IN A COBBLER WORKSHOP TO BECOMING ONE OF BRITAIN’S BEST-KNOWN FASHION BRANDS.

Y

ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of

“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is” - Jimmy Choo

Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of readyto-wear footwear - with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. JANUARY 2022 43

“In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million”

Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, 44 JANUARY 2022

crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-to-earth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Tate Britain’s major exhibition Hogarth and Europe will present his work in a fresh light, seen for the first time alongside works by his continental contemporaries. It will explore the parallels and exchanges that crossed borders and the cosmopolitan character of Hogarth’s art. Hogarth’s best-known paintings and prints, such as Marriage A-la-Mode 1743, The Gate of Calais 1748 and Gin Lane 1751, will be shown alongside works by famed European artists, including Jean-Siméon Chardin in Paris, Pietro Longhi in Venice, and Cornelis Troost in Amsterdam. Together they will reveal how changes in society took art in new directions, both in Britain and abroad. Featuring over 60 of Hogarth’s works, brought together from private and public collections around Europe and North America, the exhibition will draw on decades of research to show Hogarth in all his complexity – whether as staunch patriot or sharp critic, bawdy satirist or canny businessman. THE BEST BARS IN THE WORLD By Prudence Wade

This year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Bars has been announced, with London-based watering holes making two appearances in the top five. Other entries include Shanghai bars with cocktail lists inspired by astrology, and art deco speakeasies in Mexico City. Here’s a glimpse into the top five, and a look at some of the quirkiest other bars on the list…

ATLAS IN SINGAPORE. A DRINK AT THE CONNAUGHT BAR IN LONDON

2. Tayēr + Elementary, London: This is a bar of two halves: first you have Elementary, in a relaxed, industrial-style space with big windows – and all the mixed drinks come pre-made, on tap. When you pass through a partition you’ll reach Tayēr – it’s darker, sexier, and the elaborate cocktails are made to order.

4. The Clumsies, Athens: This impressive establishment is housed in a townhouse, with multiple floors of moody bars, rustic wooden tables and a pool table. According to the awards, at The Clumsies you can order “some of the most inventive cocktails that can be found anywhere”.

Atlas, Singapore: This ornate art deco bar has one particularly standout feature: an impressive tower of 1,300 different brands of gin. With leather booths and a plush red carpet, it feels straight out of the Great Gatsby.

Drink Kong, Rome: The awards proclaims Drink Kong has “one of the coolest decors” in the business. Interiors are like a “Japanese Blade Runner”, with minimalist furniture and neon lights everywhere.

3. Paradiso, Barcelona: Not all is as it seems at Paradiso: to enter the bar, you first have to walk through a fridge door in a pastrami shop. Inside, the speakeasy is housed within curved wooden panels, and the drinks can be extravagant events – from a negroni served inside a mini dry ice ‘volcano’ to cocktails drunk from large shells.

PARADISO IN BARCELONA.

Salmon Guru, Madrid: The drinks at Salmon Guru have to be seen to be believed, with CN Traveller calling them “sippable works of art”. Cocktails are served in everything from a porcelain fire-breathing wolf to a glass egg – and the decor is just as outlandish to match.

El Copitas, St Petersburg: Transport yourself to Mexico in this St Petersburg bar dedicated to all things agave. Small but perfectly formed, expect tequila, mezcal and Mexican snacks to go with your drink.

The top five… 1. Connaught Bar, London: The awards describes Connaught Bar as “the quintessential London hotel bar”, but with an Italian flair. This is the second year in a row it’s claimed the top spot, showing it’s worthy of a visit – just make sure to order the signature dry martini.

A TASTE OF THE REST…

5. Florería Atlántico, Buenos Aires: This basement bar is hidden underneath a florist-meets-wine store, and pays tribute to Argentina’s indigenous communities with its cocktail menu.

1930, Milan: Don’t expect easy entry to this mysterious Milanese bar. The address is secret – there’s no website and you won’t be able to Google it. You’ll have to charm your way into the bar, knowing the right people to ask instead. Once there, this establishment is all about Prohibition-era glamour and modern drinks (apparently).

Curated by Candida Stevens, for 2022 Platform will explore the theme of Music and its part in contemporary visual art. Visual art and music share common cultural influences, including societal, political and technological. With contemporary craft and contemporary art increasingly occupying a shared space in both exhibitions and collections, Platform will look at the range of music inspired by visual art being made today. Photo 50: The Fair’s annual exhibition of contemporary photography, will be curated by art historian and curator Rodrigo Orrantia. No Place is an Island presents a selection of works by British and UK-based artists, interested in questioning the idea of an island and the associated concepts of isolation and isolationism. Echoing John Donne’s celebrated No Man is an Island, this exhibition examines what it means to be an island in the contemporary moment. As we slowly emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic to a post-Brexit Britain, the topical issues of our day (climate emergency, mass migration, travel

HERNE HILL SCHOOL STRENGTHENS ITS ECE FOCUS AND EXPERTISE

A

t the top of Herne Hill, a mere three-minute walk away from its main site, Herne Hill School recently opened a dedicated Kindergarten for 2- and 3-year-old children (girls and boys). The stately Victorian mansion has been completely refurbished to the highest standard to create a warm, welcoming ‘home from home’ environment. The site, which is highly conducive to stimulating the children’s creativity and maximising their learning, has met with strong approval from parents, with some comparing it to a “Soho House for children”. It enables Herne Hill School to consolidate its position as cutting-edge experts in Early Childhood Education, the period research has unequivocally established as the most formative in a child’s life and requiring a specialist pedagogical approach.

FOCUS AND EXPERTISE

“Since our foundation in 1976, we have focused exclusively on educating young

children from Kindergarten (2+) to Year 2 (7+)”, says Ngaire Telford, who is only the third Headteacher in the school’s history. “Thanks to this cumulative experience and by thoughtfully integrating best practices from other successful ECE programmes such as Montessori, Reggio Emilia, Forest School and Te Whāriki from my native New Zealand, we have developed a unique, continuous five-year curriculum which we believe goes way beyond the statutory requirements of the English EYFS and Key Stage 1 national curriculum”, she adds. Herne Hill School benefits from being just the right size for its focused five-year provision.

On the one hand, being the largest stand-alone independent school in the country specialising in this age range affords it the scale required for employing a critical mass of expert early years educators and state-of-the-art facilities and resources. On the other hand, it is sufficiently small to enjoy a warm and friendly family community atmosphere in which the children benefit from deep relationships with these loving, caring and expert staff.

STRONG ETHOS AND HIGHQUALITY STAFF ARE KEY

“Early Childhood Education is the period research has unequivocally established as the most formative in a child’s life and requiring a specialist pedagogical approach”

Asked about what she believes to be the greatest success factors for cutting-edge ECE provision, Mrs Telford spontaneously replies “ethos and staff”. She explains: “A strong and purposeful ethos can provide an all-encompassing cultural umbrella for everyone’s behaviours at the school. Our own ethos of ‘Love · Care · Excellence’ encapsulates our commitment to excellence and conviction that love and care are prerequisites for optimising a young child’s learning trajectory. But ultimately, having amazing staff is even more important as it is they who develop the supportive relationships required to guide young

children, day-in day-out, on their crucial ‘whole child’ development journey.” Following their successful start in the Kindergarten, on a term-time basis with full-day provision two to five days per week, the Herne Hill School children are gradually introduced to the school’s main site and its extensive woodland area to enable a smooth progression through the five-year continuous curriculum. They then move on to their next schools at a natural Year 3 entry point - with a spark in their eyes and equipped with a comprehensive set of life skills to seize the opportunities and surmount the challenges they will face in their futures.

QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S

pplying for a child’s primary school place is one of the biggest decisions parents have to make for their children, laying the foundation stone for their journey into formal education and a love of learning for years to come. Nestled in the North Yorkshire countryside on the outskirts of York, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) welcomes children from as young as 3 months into its Kindergarten, and all the way through until 19 years old. Chapter House is one of four schools within the Collegiate and is home to QE’s Early Years, infant and junior provision. It is a vibrant and engaging school with a warm, family atmosphere. As part of QE’s unique four school model, children stay in Chapter House until Year 5, when they make the transition to QE’s Middle School King’s Magna in Year 6. In February 2019, the Independent Schools Inspectorate judged the Chapter House Early Years provision as ‘Outstanding’ across all areas, praising the ‘excellent care and learning experiences that the setting provides’. Chapter House has also achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark Gilt, the Quality Mark for its Early Years provision and the Quality Mark for Primary Provision. Chapter House offers a purposebuilt, friendly setting, with the opportunity of free flow from room to room. This ensures children are familiar with all staff and environments easing the transition as the children grow. The current climate of caution breeds apprehension and unease where previously we traded in fearlessness and adventure but because of these societal changes, an education built on character and Values is more relevant and impactful than ever. At Dulwich Prep London, eight school Values of ‘Love’, ‘Honesty’, ‘Courage’, ‘Justice’, ‘Self-discipline’, ‘Humility’, ‘Service’ and ‘Gratitude’ were introduced a few years ago, adopting the original characteristics identified by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Values: ‘a pioneering interdisciplinary research centre focusing on character, virtues and values in the interest of human flourishing’ because that is exactly what Dulwich Prep wanted – for

ooking back on her acting career, there’s one role Amanda Holden is raring to reprise more than any other. “I always think, ‘Oh, let’s bring back Cutting It!’” – the BBC drama set in a Manchester hair salon that ran for four seasons from 2002 to 2004 – “I still regularly see Angela [Griffin], we’re all still good friends. I think it would be really fun to bring that back.” To play hairdresser Mia Bevan, the Hampshire-born actor spent time under the tutelage of legendary stylist Lino Carbosiero at Daniel Galvin: “I actually learned how to be a hairdresser. I swept the hair, did the blow dries. I learnt all kinds of tricks and tips.” Now, nearly two decades later, Holden has landed a hew hair-related role as celebrity ambassador for Charles Worthington. After an afternoon tea event to launch the partnership – Holden resplendent in a white suit, her honeyblonde locks perfectly coiffed – we’ve retired to a quiet corner of the swanky hotel to chat. The Britain’s Got Talent judge admits her tresses have been through some tough times, including the phase in the 80s when a certain royal was all the rage: “Me and my sister, both of us wanted Princess Diana hair. I had a sailor dress because [Diana] wore a sailor dress, I had flat pumps. I made a scrapbook. I was a huge fan.” Jennifer Aniston was – and remains – another source of ‘hairspiration’ (“Yes, I did The Rachel! Of course!”) but the 50-year-old says she won’t be following the recent trend set by celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker and letting her greys peak through. “I will always be blonde. Each to their own – I have some friends that are

embracing age, some people that aren’t. My mum stopped dyeing her own hair around 60 and she’s got really gorgeous, soft-coloured grey hair. I’ll always go ‘Oh god, Mummy, can you just put a bit of colour back in?’ But for me, it’s not something I’m going to do.” Nor is she going to be retiring from the spotlight anytime soon. Holden, who co-hosts the Heart Breakfast radio show with Jamie Theakston on weekday mornings, cites Jennifer Lopez as an example of a woman in the entertainment world going “through the roof” in terms of “what you can achieve at what age”. Blonde ambition aside, the mum-of-two (she shares daughters Lexie, 15, and Hollie, nine, with record producer husband Chris Hughes) “relished” the chance to spend more time with her family at home in London during the first UK lockdown last year. “I really loved having everyone under one roof. I loved it. I loved being silly on TikTok, I loved that I socialised with my best friends on Zoom. I loved that I didn’t need to call an Uber, I just staggered up the stairs. There was so many positives for me.” The third lockdown was a different story, however: “The third one did my head in, just in the way that I just lost faith in the government and the rules generally and human nature. I think we started lockdown by being told to look out for each other, and we ended lockdown by being told to spy on each other.” Now, as the pandemic rumbles on, Holden worries that Brits might not be as resilient as they were in the past. “We’ve got to learn as a nation. You know, we’ve won wars, we’ve got through everything with our sense of humor and our stoicism and our ability to stand up for ourselves, and I just hope that we haven’t lost any of that. I don’t want Great Britain to go soft, otherwise I’m leaving – like Kylie!” Recently, the pop star told the BBC she would be moving back to her native Australia, a claim which Holden cheerfully refutes. “I don’t think she’s going. No! Rubbish!” she says, laughing. “She’s not going anywhere. She has a house here and Australia, she’s always done that.” The pair share make-up artist Christian Vermaak, and now they’re both Neighbours alumna, with Holden shooting scenes for the Aussie soap in London earlier this month that will air next year. “Oh my god, she rang on set as well!” Holden recalls. “Kylie rang Christian. She was like, ‘Let me speak to Amanda’. And I was like, ‘Excuse me, I’m just talking to Charlene, everyone!’ It was such a thrill. So fun and so camp.” After making her Ramsay Street dream come true and releasing her debut studio album, Songs from My Heart, last year, the multi-talented star has now set her sights on the literary world and hopes to publish a novel. Is there anything else left on her showbiz bucket list? “I would love to play like a baddie in a Bollywood movie. That’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do, right from my 20s. Surely I could be some wicked mother or some kind of baddie who turns up an upsets the apple cart?” For now, the jetsetter is off to Dubai for a well-earned break, where she’ll indulge in her favourite treats again after being “vegan for most of this year. I thought, ‘I’m gonna just try being vegan for a bit’, because I just wanted to and I’ve really enjoyed it, and how it’s made me feel. “But I’m off on holiday tomorrow, so I will be back on the rosé and the cheese. I just think don’t make rules for yourself. Just do everything in moderation.”

ADA OOI MIXES CHINESE AND WESTERN MEDICINE FOR A MORE HOLISTIC A PPROACH TO SKINCARE. BY PRUDENCE WADE

SAVING FACE: SECRETS FROM A CELEBRITY FACIALIST

W

ith a client roster including Rooney Mara, Ellie Goulding and Lily Allen, facialist Ada Ooi (adaooi. com) knows a thing or two about glowing skin. Originally from Hong Kong, Ooi spent weekends growing up at her grandfather’s pharmacy in nearby Macau. “I would sit next to him every Saturday, I was the girl grinding all these herbs and pastes for the customers,” Ooi remembers. “I picked up a lot about the good feeling of helping people.” Another thing she learned from her grandfather was the potential in mixing Chinese and Western medicines. After an ill-fated foray into advertising, Ooi trained as an aromatherapist and aesthetician – realising she was “trying to find a link to my grandfather”. When she started treating skin, often it was the last thing Ooi looked at. “Someone would come through my door and I’d be like, ‘Actually, I don’t even want to touch your face, I want to touch your feet because your blood circulation is bad, your liver and kidney is in depletion’,” she explains. The next step in Ooi’s career was to train as a practitioner of Chinese medicine – and that’s when she felt she was “really helping people”, she says. “My philosophy is treating 80 JANUARY 2022

from within: that is how I see myself as a facialist, because our skin is the biggest organ of our body and is really the reflection of what’s happening in our inner self.” This ethos has garnered Ooi plenty of celebrity fans, and these are just some of the tips and secrets she’s picked up along the way…

Think about your skin holistically

“If you care for your skin, you should be caring for your whole wellbeing as well,” Ooi says simply. “I’m not saying you need to go and do lots of check-ups – nothing complicated, but be more mindful and conscious about your stress, the tension you have, hormonal fluctuations. These contribute to most longer-term skin problems, like adult acne and wrinkles – yes, gravity plays a role, but a tense expression is the killer.”

Don’t blindly follow trends

“Don’t follow trends to try look like other people – it really is unsustainable and you can make the wrong decisions,” Ooi says. Over-exfoliating is a big one right now. “I really do see there is an addiction to using acids and exfoliating agents, because of

Ooi prefers to use the word ‘essence’ rather than ‘toner’ – particularly as toners have an increasingly bad reputation for being harsh or drying. For Ooi, an essence should follow your cleanser – it won’t minimise your pores (“pores don’t shrink”, she says), but it can balance your skin’s pH and “give your skin a boost of hydration, in the sense that it’s mild and easy enough for the skin to drink up”, she explains. “It’s more important than a moisturiser, I would say.”

how it feels,” she sighs. “Initially, it feels very smooth, very good – but then you start peeling, or you have redness… And your skin can get very dry.”

Try not to do everything at once

Almost all of us are guilty of it: we get some kind of issue with our skin – whether it’s acne or melasma – and we try and fix it by chucking on as many products and treatments as we can. “Try to do one thing at a time – don’t experiment with so much,” Ooi pleads. “Even if you’ve got the money, doing everything at the same time cannot be good for you.”

Mindset is everything

“It’s really down to the person to find the right mindset to be receiving the

An emulsion “Emulsions are the texture between serum and moisturiser,” Ooi says. “It’s actually got the best of both worlds… I think an emulsion is a great light moisturiser to always have on your dressing table, so you can adjust how much moisture you want to have every night.” This means your skincare routine can be more “flexible”.

skincare routine they have designed for themselves,” says Ooi. “Slapping everything on will always feel like a chore – it really doesn’t do much, apart from conditioning the surface of your skin. “But if you take a little bit of mindfulness in your skincare routine, you will feel a big difference in your mood. And if you do it at night, you will sleep better as well.”

Massage your products in

Ooi is a big fan of taking the time to massage in your products. “It really creates a brain-skin reaction with dopamine – happy hormones. They are going to be hyped up, so you’ll have more benefits from your skincare, and your mind will feel a lot better too.” JANUARY 2022 81

BATHROOM REFRESH: WHY WALLPAPER IS BIG NEWS IN THE BATHROOM

WALLPAPER IN THE BATHROOM HAS BECOME ONE OF THE DESIGN TRENDS OF 2021, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH FROM LUXURY WALLPAPER DESIGNER ELIZABETH OCKFORD.

86 JANUARY 2022

ABOUT ELIZABETH OCKFORD

G

Colour, pattern and the desire to evoke joy is at the heart of wallpaper brand Elizabeth Ockford Ltd. Created by Chelsea School of Art graduate Elizabeth Ockford in 2019, the firm is driven by a passion for fresh, new designs inspired by the nostalgia of archived illustrations, antique fabrics and long-forgotten vintage artefacts. The small design team combine traditional artistry with modern printing techniques to create rich designs with an ethereal edge. Located in the heart of the Sussex countryside, Elizabeth Ockford Ltd is committed to sustainability and protecting the environment. All wallpapers are printed to order, reducing excess waste, using ecofriendly water-based inks and FSCcertified papers. elizabethockford.com

oogle searches across the entire Home & Garden category shows searches for ‘wallpaper in the bathroom’ peaked this summer. And while some might be scared of embracing this new wallpaper trend, Elizabeth is a big fan. Wallpaper designer Elizabeth Ockford said: “I think a bathroom is a great space in which to use a wallpaper. “Something fun or interesting to look at in the bath is such treat. And right now we all need a bit of escapism - so why not make that your bathroom? “You can use wallpaper to create many moods, from bold and sassy to characterful and adventurous, simply by picking a brave choice of wallpaper.” Of course, hanging wallpaper in a bathroom does bring with it some specific challenges, mainly the humid surroundings. But according to Elizabeth, choose the right wallpaper and the right tools and it won’t be a problem. She said: “People often falter at using wallpaper in a bathroom, because they are afraid of how the dampness or steam will impact the paper. “However, most modern bathrooms are far better ventilated these days than they used to be – and if hung well, it’s not really a problem with a non-woven paper.

“But, if you are concerned, apply a coat of matt water-based varnish over all the wallpaper once its hung and dry. Make sure to ‘seal’ all the edges and joins, and this will make your wallpaper more ‘waterproof’ than traditional vinyl papers.” Elizabeth Ockford carried out research using the Google Trends platform which takes account of over 3.5 billion searches a day. While Google Trends doesn’t show exact search volumes it shows increases in interest by providing a ‘normalised’ score of between 0 and 100 against particular terms and categories.

TILE

TRENDS PORCELAIN SUPERSTORE REVEAL THEIR BEST-SELLING TILES OF 2021

M

oroccan-inspired patterns and a modern take on traditional terrazzo were the UK’s favourite tile designs in 2021, according to new data from independent retailer Porcelain Superstore. The tile experts at the family-run business have revealed their top 10 bestselling tiles of 2021. Casablanca Mix, a vibrant, beautifully patterned tile topped the charts, closely followed by Opal Emerald, a bold green subway tile. Porcelain Superstore’s playful take on terrazzo – Tutti Frutti was third, while Arlo Light – another striking take on terrazzo, finished fifth. Sitting between Tutti Frutti and Arlo Light to take the fourth spot was Zellige Pearl, a cool, Moroccan-inspired beauty. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Morocco is synonymous with tiles, so it’s no surprise Moroccan-inspired tiles have an enduring appeal. “Casablanca Mix is a real stunner of a tile with its traditional Moroccan detailing and bright, bold hues, which all come together to create a gorgeous tapestry of colour and pattern. “Sneaking up behind is Tutti Frutti. Our terrazzo-inspired tiles have sold amazingly well in 2021 and Arlo Light has been another really strong contender. The terrazzo trend is not going anywhere and I think this is going to continue well into 2022 and beyond. “It was interesting to see Opal Emerald so high. 2022 is going to be the year green tiles reign supreme.” porcelainsuperstore.co.uk

THE ENDURING APPEAL OF

JAPANESE INTERIORS

ANNA HOWELL, CHAPLINS INTERIORS EDITOR

I

t’s been likened to a quiet storm. The type of idea that makes its way to our shores in whispers, riding the crest of waves like origami, wabi sabi and kintsugi. Far too ancient to be considered trendy, Japanese influences are nevertheless ever-present — at once as a vehicle for outstanding aesthetics, and as a roadmap for a more fulfilling life. The infatuation predates even today’s crop of international tastemakers. Charlotte Perriand, the acclaimed French designer, spent much of her heyday in Japan, and so did Italian architect Gianfranco Frattini. But what is novel, perhaps, is how necessary the Japanese approach to living now feels. How the Japanese home came to embody the ideals of serene, considered living is explained by Joy Hendry in her seminal 1995 essay, Wrapping Culture. “In Japanese culture, there is a certain power attached to the condition of being enclosed. Ascetics who shut themselves away were said to gain spiritual power, a concept in Japan known as utsubo”. While utsubo initially only applied to a handful of Zen philosophers, it soon trickled into the wider culture, leading to a reverence of life indoors and a more thoughtful approach to the way we design interiors. Today, many Japanese homes are distinguished by a sense of lightness. Dining room furniture is kept classic and minimal with clear open lines that encourage conversation, while sculptural paper lanterns provide a soft halo of luminosity overhead. In this pantheon of aesthetics, sharp

edges find short shrift, replaced instead by soft rounded silhouettes that seem to have been shaped by the elements instead. It’s an idea that even extends towards some of the more traditionally bulky items of furniture. In the hands of designers like Isamu Noguchi and Naoto Fukasawa, beds, bookcases and coffee tables seem to float above the ground, maximising the sense of available space. Journalist Marilena Sobacchi has described this new lexis of lightness as a concentration of expressivity in minimal form. We like to think of it as the ability to say a lot with a little. In the absence of excessive ornamentation, there is room to think. An idea that Marie Kondo explores in her bestselling series The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “When your room is clean and uncluttered, you have no choice but to examine your inner state.” - Marie Kondo Nor is the search for levity directly restricted to interiors. As the news cycle intensifies, downloads of meditation apps like Calm and

Headspace have reached fever pitch. So too, has the demand for a new type of influencer, the kind that advocates buying once and buying well over an endless cycle of materialism. Transcending the Zeitgeist in 2022 will naturally look different for everyone. But there’s something rather endearing about the idea that calm, stillness and serenity can become the house you live in. It’s in this arena that Japanese inspired-interiors excel. Championing intentionality over excess and stillness instead of clutter. To shop any of the Japanese-inspired designs in this article, simply head to chaplins.co.uk. MUTED HUES

Pastels have always played a significant role in the world of interiors, and continue to be a popular trend as we approach 2022. Pastel colours are relaxing yet playful, making them the perfect colours for interior spaces. These soft, muted hues of blue, pink and green can offer the perfect complimentary colour palette to enhance the brilliance of Very Peri, with each paring working together to effortlessly uplift your space.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

Just as Very Peri finds some of its roots in the natural world, so do many of the complimentary colours suggested by Pantone. Shades of green represent nature, growth and renewal, so it’s no wonder many of us have been craving more of it after countless lockdowns. Green may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of ways to incorporate the Colour of the Year, but it provides a surprisingly pleasing contrast with the vibrance of Very Peri whilst also working to ground your space.

Saturated shades are all the rage at the moment, with everyone craving a little more colour in their day-to-day, and are on track to continue making bold moves as we move into the new year. B

uy to Let Hunter is a niche company offering investors a chance to purchase perfect small properties to rent on a short-term, serviced basis in the dormitory suburbs. But who, I hear you ask, chooses to stay in a tiny house in Binfield? One of our guests, Blair Baker, recently had a chat with us about her experience as a guest with Buy To Let Hunter.

How did you come to be staying in one of our properties?

“We sold our house in June, on the very day we put it up for market! We were relocating as a family to the States and for that to happen, my husband needed a visa. Due to Covid his application was delayed. We found ourselves in a total pickle – we were advised to stay in an Airbnb and wait. We had no idea it would be for six months!”

How has the experience with BTLH been?

“When we found your house in Binfield, we felt so grateful and blessed. We were actually blown away: it was a proper home for us – with a garden for Shadow and a locked shed for us to use for storage.”

What would you say to other people in your position?

“This has been a major life transition and you have given us the opportunity to have a home, showing us flexibility and genuine care, giving so much more than a roof over our heads: honestly, it has made all the difference! It provides the perfect stop gap for those who are stuck between life transitions, a true safe place for us to be in the midst of stress and turmoil.” 98 JANUARY 2022

Blair and her family are packing and hopeful to finally make the next step towards a new life together in Massachusetts with flights scheduled and a shiny new visa in hand. “We think we will leave next week – but now we have to take Covid tests, so everything is still somewhat up in the air… it’s like the most suspenseful storyline narrative ever, isn’t it! “Will they stay or will they go?”” In the nicest possible way, we hope Blair, Shadow and her family leave for good! The owner of Blair’s serviced and furnished home has been earning twice as much in rental, has the warm fuzzy feeling of providing a much-needed home and has a hassle free, flexible investment. If you would like to learn about our other guests or investors please do read the whole series of interviews on the website.
