Located in the heart of Mayfair, Galvin At Windows is perched up high on the 28th Floor of London Hilton on Park Lane. Bringing back nothing but the best of modern British classics onto the London dining scene post lock-down, Chef Patron Chris Galvin and Head Chef Marc Hardiman have drawn on their culinary experiences to create new seasonally inspired offerings for this much-loved and trusted brand, underpinned by simplicity and innovation with a carefully curated hand-picked wine list to match. Lloyds Bank has released data which, not surprisingly shows that prime London boroughs continue to dominate the list. Lloyds Bank, which compiled the research using Land Registry data, said every region of England has at least one “million pound street” Ilchester Place, located in the heart of Holland Park has been crowned the most expensive residential street in England. While the Queen favours brightly coloured coat dresses for formal occasions, when it comes to off-duty style, Her Majesty is all about cardigans. Usually teaming a blouse and pleated skirt with a loose, open cardigan in a muted hue, the Queen has been pictured in buttondown sweaters for decades, most recently when the monarch met her newest great grandchild, Archie. When you think of relaxed and understated cool in fashion, waistcoats might not be the first thing that spring to mind. After all, the last time you wore one was likely the mid-Noughties, chasing after the Boho style of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss. Like so many trends from the 2000s, waistcoats have since been banished from our wardrobes and minds. From check prints to sharp tailoring, here’s how to wear a waistcoat in 2020.

Anna Van den Hรถvel takes you on an abstract world tour

lobal is not just the theme in the pictures of Anna Luisa van den Hövel. The artist fascinates on an international level with rugged surfaces and elegant motifs. In the world of fine arts, nature by itself has always been a popular model. Not without reason. Original forms, a rich variety of unadulterated colours and mystical landscapes have also captivated the Munich artist Anna van den Hövel. Growing up between the coast of Menorca, the Alpine landscape of Austria and urban Munich, the urge to explore and experience the world emerged early on. So she traveled across all the continents and fell madly in love with our fascinating planet. On her travels, the curious explorer collected mental snapshots that are still rooted in her deep emotions today. A very important aspect are the photographs that Anna has been able to collect over the years all over the world and now serve as a blueprint for her paintings. Her works are not about depicting lifelike landscape paintings. “Our body is a great asset - so I include this directly in my works, using my hands and feet as a paintbrush. “ Anna van den Hövel wants to give the viewer more. She connects the creative process with its own individual perception of the world. Expressive and unconventional techniques are used. After a long study of materials, Anna has found the perfect mix for her works to create a collage through layering and blending. She OCTOBER 2020 21

combines acrylics, pigments, lacquer and materials such as sand, earth or mortar to make the images in her head a reality. “My definition of art is to create something with my hands that expresses who I am,” says the artist about her work. Her works are more than just painting. The often large-format canvases with generously applied layers wrap the viewer through powerful movements and offer a surprisingly new and charming view of our planet. “Birdview”, a series from her creative cycle. The bird’s-eye view makes her motifs smaller, smaller and powerless. Only the big picture of colours, shapes and materials offers the viewer a scope to perceive buildings, objects and landscapes. The success proves Anna right. Currently, exhibitions are planned in Los Angeles and New York. Her agent in the US is none other than Guy Hector. With “the Art House” he already manages many great artists in North America. In addition, her art does not just show on the canvas but together with the shoe innovation “Mime et moi”, Anna van den Hövel designed the look of an exclusive shoe limited to 100 pairs. This makes it clear that the young creator is well equipped for her journey on the catwalk of the international art scene: with talent, techniques and heart and soul. hoevelvandenart.com 22 OCTOBER 2020

Like walking around with my head in the clouds, daydreaming or something. Self- discovery and Life has taught me, to make my idealized world real. And share what I see. With my work, I try to recreate that moment when the image became clear, the moment I was experiencing connected, and I knew that I would always remember it that way. That feeling it stirred in me. A connection to nature that feels familiar, and contemplative.

or Stacie McCormick, being an artist is a balancing act. She runs the prestigious Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop in West London. The artist leading this artist-led initiative is a double full time job. Between exhibitions, residency programmes and a foundation, McCormick has her hands full, but the promise from the very beginning has been to always keep her studio practice strong and alive. Multi-disciplinary artist, Los Angeles-born and London-based, Stacie McCormick is creating paintings primarily on canvas and paper, producing works that are abstract & gestural. Using ink, acrylic and oil, her paintings are often referred to as hypnotic, meditative, powerfully calming, calligraphic and beautiful. Stacie has a daily practice of rehearsing her gesture in preparation for larger paintings resulting in a strong portfolio of works on paper. Investing in Fine Art isn’t so crazy…
ine art does more than just add a dash of elegance or ‘Je ne sais quoi’ to your décor. In fact, with returns of up to 64.4% you would be mad not to take it more seriously. This year when financial investment opportunities are becoming increasingly precarious, the world of art is thriving as it runs completely in a league of its own. The increased demand of individuals moving their money out of the financial asset classes and stepping into the exciting world of art, are discovering that their money is more secure than ever. Now, investing in art doesn’t just mean it has to be a ‘Blue Chip’ master such as Andy Warhol, Banksy or Pabalo Picasso. It is good to learn and discover the new and emerging artists of our generation, who can give back a significant return for the future. Dealing with a Fine Art Gallery who you can trust to guide you through the different tiers of art investment is a MUST.

ne Aldwych, London’s much loved, independently-owned and run hotel in Covent Garden reopened on Wednesday 16th September, with a new look, feel, sense of inclusiveness and string of experiences created with local partners. Known for its striking contemporary interiors and fabulous 20th century art collection, One Aldwych has been spruced up from head to toe. In embracing the new normal, One Aldwych will be guided by their guests: whether they prefer to enter their room alone, or be shown to their accommodation by a staff member; to using QR codes for menus, or opting for a printed menu. Whichever option is chosen, the hotel will operate within the regulations and make sure that their journey is safe, happy and relaxed. When it comes to sustainability, One Aldwych has always led from the front and its green credentials are
second to none. The hotel reopens with a new beefriendly rooftop garden, complete with beehive. Working with London-based charity, River of Flowers, who help partners to plant ‘rivers’ of wildflowers and trees in urban landscapes to feed and shelter bees and pollinators. One Aldwych will be using bee-friendly ingredients in two new cocktails – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic – which have been created for the cocktail list, in the Lobby Bar, and a portion of the proceeds of sales will go to River of Flowers. One Aldwych’s scrumdiddlyumtious Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea, created in partnership with the Roald Dahl Story Company, has been taken to the next level. Diners can now expect to feast their eyes and taste buds on a mixture of splendid savouries (think salmon and beetroot macron); scrumptious sweets (look out for the blueberry chocolate tart and scones with snozzberry jam); and fizzylifting drinks. For the first time ever, One Aldwych has just opened its doors to our four-legged friends, creating a doggie-friendly package in partnership with Bowwow London. Canine guests can choose an overnight stay, sharing their accommodation with their humans, at no extra charge. They will be provided with a bed and bowl, whilst in residence, and treats from Bowwow to enjoy. Re-opening offer: LOVE LONDON at ONE ALDWYCH from £485 for two sharing a double room. Includes a guaranteed room upgrade, English breakfast, parking for one car, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, early check-in, late check-out and access to unlimited online magazines and newspapers through Press Reader. onealdwych.com

Princess Beatrice marries in vintage: How to choose the perfect pre-loved wedding dress The royal wore an upcycled gown lent to her by the Queen.

“People often turn to preloved wedding dresses as they can offer something a little different to more modern designs”
rincess Beatrice has married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a surprise ceremony, but what’s more unexpected was her choice of wedding dress. Instead of enlisting a top designer to make a gown from scratch like so many royal brides before her, Beatrice opted for a customised vintage dress. For her big day, she dipped into the Queen’s archives and found a Peau De Soie ivory taffeta dress by Norman Hartnell, trimmed with duchess satin and encrusted with diamantes. The Queen wore the gown to the premier of Lawrence Of Arabia at the Odeon Leicester Square in December 1962, and again to the State Opening of Parliament in 1966. Beatrice had the Queen’s senior dresser Angela Kelly and designer Stewart Parvin remodel the dress to make it appropriate for her wedding day, adding delicate capped sleeves. She topped off the

outfit with another loan from the Queen – the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, which Elizabeth II also wore on her wedding day in 1947. Over the last decade we’ve seen royals get married in pieces by top designers from Alexander McQueen to Givenchy, so Beatrice’s vintage choice is quite unique. The outfit was well received on social media, with one Twitter user writing: “Adorable couple and could not have picked a more perfect wedding dress for her than that elegant/whimsical, yet very vintage, sentimental ensemble she wore.” Beatrice has also been praised for choosing a more sustainable option for her big day. Not only is re or upcycling an existing dress eco-friendly, but people often turn to pre-loved wedding dresses as they can offer something a little different to more modern designs. “Princess Beatrice’s choice of wedding dress marks a point in the royal family’s iconic fashion choices, taking steps towards mindful consumption even on such an important day,” says Victoria Prew from rental platform HURR Collective (hurrcollective.com). So if you’re looking to wear a vintage outfit on your wedding day, these top tips may help you find the perfect outfit…
planning. “Make sure there’s enough time to have your perfect piece altered,” says Prew. “Get the dress, then get it altered to perfection.” Grant also says you should be flexible with sizing: “As it’s preloved, it might have also been altered at the time of buying to fit the owner, so you may have to size up or down to get the fit that works for you. Always get in touch with the seller to check the specific measurements.” As well as tailoring the outfit to fit, Grant recommends shortening hemlines or streamlining waists to give your vintage look a modern touch.
Search for accessories
You might not have the Queen’s tiara handy for your wedding, that doesn’t mean you can’t take inspiration from Beatrice and hunt for vintage accessories to go with your dress. “Vintage is also great for crowns and earrings,” says Prew. “Going vintage means you can guarantee your choice will be ‘timeless’ rather than ‘trendy’ – it’s your day, so make a statement.”
Consider its condition
“While a few buttons or sequins missing shouldn’t put you off investing in a great quality, pre-owned wedding dress, more significant signs of wear and tear require further thought,” Grant says. “Don’t risk your money on items that are fraying, holed and stained as, chances are, trying to repair a gown and get a good colour match will be trickier to get away with. If the dress hasn’t been professionally cleaned by the seller, consider getting this done yourself.”
Be open-minded and set aside plenty of time
“Make sure there’s enough time to have your perfect piece altered,” says Prew. “Get the dress, then get it altered to perfection””
You might have your heart set on a particular designer from a certain era, but Prew warns against this. “Try not to be too focused on the designer; there are incredible options out there without the labels,” she says. Head of pre-loved at eBay (ebay.co.uk) Emma Grant recommends you commit a fair amount of time to the hunt, saying: “The nature of vintage clothing is that you’ll need to have a good scroll before that one-of-a-kind gown catches your eye.”
Be targeted in your search
“Try and find the best vintage sellers online, starting with Etsy or 1stdibs,” advises Prew. To make life a bit easier for yourself, Grant says: “If you’re looking for a particular cut, style or era, be specific in your search. Naming brands or eras that are associated with the style you’re looking to emulate will help you narrow down the search to the most relevant items.”
Plan in advance
Vintage wedding dresses tend to be one-of-a-kind, so it’s unlikely you’ll find a dress that fits you like a glove. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear it on your big day, but you’ll have to be a bit smart with OCTOBER 2020 41

15YEARS OF THE
BUGATTI VEYRON 16.4 Bugatti’s Designer Director reveals his six favourite Veyrons
42 OCTOBER 2020
T
he first hyper sports car of the modern era, world record breaker and icon of automotive design and still regarded as one of the greatest technological challenges in the automotive industry. Three hundred Veyron 16.4 Coupés and 150 Roadsters, including special editions, were produced over 10 years in the French town of Molsheim. Achim Anscheidt has been directing the Bugatti Design department since 2004 and under his regime, many of the notable Veyron variants were born. Here he looks back on his six personal favourites.
Veyron 16.4 Pur Sang (2007)
“Looking back it is like remembering the birth of your first child. You never forget such an emotional event.” said Anscheidt. It was the start of Bugatti’s range of special editions. Instead of using two different colours, the Pur Sang contrasts carbon and aluminium – a first in automotive engineering. To highlight the technical beauty of
the materials, Bugatti decided to reinterpret the classic Bugatti twotone design element in a spectacular new way. Only five units were made and sold out within 45 minutes at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport (2010)
“It was the first time we applied the ‘form follows performance’ approach so systematically,” explained Anscheidt. “To achieve our goal of breaking the world speed record for series production cars, we had to optimise the aerodynamics..” The engine has an output of 1,200 PS, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 415 km/h. Under the strict conditions of Guinness World Records, the car achieved an average top speed of 431.072 km/h, thereby becoming the world’s fastest production super sports car. The first five “World Record Edition” models sold out immediately.
“To achieve our goal of breaking the world speed record for series production cars, we had to optimise the aerodynamics”
Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L’Or Blanc (2011)
“Made out of high-quality porcelain inside and out, calling the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L’Or Blanc extraordinary is an understatement. Its abstract paintwork goes well with Bugatti’s goal with this one-off art car. “I was sceptical at first, as I by no means wanted to emulate automotive works of art such as those by Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons or Roy Lichtenstein,” said Anscheidt. “But there was a desire at Bugatti to create an art car that reflected superior standards of quality and material, as well as hand craftsmanship. What emerged was the fastest porcelain in the world. The one-of-a-kind car was sold to a collector. OCTOBER 2020 43

Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse (2012)
“We hope that one day, the grandchildren of the current owners will sit inside the Ettore Bugatti Legend car and begin to reflect on the beauty of the materials and the fact that this car offers quality beyond the normal lifespan of an automobile. That is precisely what a Bugatti is” – Achim Anscheidt
As the only opentop Bugatti to this day, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse set a new speed record for open-top sports cars at 254 miles per hour, But that’s not what makes it special for Anscheidt. “ Initially, we as designers were criticised for the Vitesse not looking powerful enough as a roadster, but our customers appreciate the fact that it looks like a coupé when the roof is closed and when open they can enjoy the inimitable feel of a roadster.” The World Record Car Edition of the Vitesse was limited to eight cars. They sold out immediately.
Veyron Grand Sport Venet (2012)
The Veyron Grand Sport Venet was another art car, made in collaboration with the French artist and sculptor Bernar Venet. “Developing a car with a famous artist with no connection to car design can be a tricky undertaking. With Bernar Venet, it was a creative process from start to finish. It was fascinating to witness how he works and how he creates large-scale sculptures. We worked closely together, and ultimately created something 44 OCTOBER 2020
The presence of soft, natural cordovan leather in the Les Légendes de Bugatti made it special for Anscheidt, as with the other Legends edition cars. But above all, the final edition of the model range based on the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse stands out. “Anyone who has ever owned a pair of shoes made from this material will understand the remarkable quality of cordovan leather and appreciate its durability. This was precisely our starting point when we created the interior of this Legend,” explains Achim Anscheidt. All 18 units of the six-part edition sold out immediately. bugatti.com

W
hilst our psychological wellbeing has been brought sharply into focus as a result of the global pandemic, the increase in demand for mental health services shouldn’t be interpreted solely as an alarming increase in anxiety and depression. Instead it should, at least in part, be assessed as a reflection of a culture shift in which we have finally started to come to terms with the notion of feelings, and the benefits to be derived from talking about them. Answering this call to action is The Soke, a new centre providing psychiatry, psychotherapy, family counselling and leadership development in the heart of South Kensington. “Suggesting that someone goes to therapy is asking them to take a huge step outside their comfort zone,” says The Soke’s Founder, Maryam Meddin, “it’s only natural that they’re going to have insecurities about the experience and it’s up to the providers to take on the responsibility of making clients feel safe and informed about the process, thereby encouraging them to enter and remain engaged with it.” 46 OCTOBER 2020
Today, occupying the iconic Queen’s Elm building in Fulham Road is The Soke, a place where attention is paid to every element of the client experience. It’s a stunningly refurbished character building that not only offers 10 spacious, luxurious therapy rooms but also adjacent “pods” in which clients can relax and reflect. For those suffering from severe anxiety, depression or insomnia, the pods can also be used for Alpha-Stim sessions: an [NHS and NICE approved] treatment whereby a device clips onto your earlobes and sends very mild microcurrents to a particular area in your brain, modulating a particular group of nerve cells and leading to stress relief. It’s safe, not addictive, won’t interfere with any medications and is proven to be effective in treating a range of common mood disorders. If you’re already in therapy at The Soke, there’s no charge for the AlphaStim treatment and you can come back in between your therapy sessions to get the boosters, if needed, at no additional cost. Fine Wine & Whisky: Are You Sitting on a Goldmine?
For all intents and purposes, the value of a fine wine should be a simple one to understand—a fantastic wine is produced in finite quantity, and, whilst being consumed across the globe, it appreciates in value as a result of its increasing rarity. The reality is that understanding the value of a fine wine is not that simple. The vintage, producer, and the wine itself are all contributing factors to its value over time. How successful was the vintage, and at what price was it released? Although wine has been traded as a commodity since the early 19th century, it was the 1970’s that was to really set the modern precedent for interest in fine wine. Amidst globalisation and a rise in global wealth, both America and Asia became important emerging markets, and in an increasingly competitive and active market, the values of wine began to rocket. As values have increased to unprecedented levels, it has been the wines of Burgundy which have led the way. A single bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti was sold 48 OCTOBER 2020
recently for a record-breaking £424,000, with prices continuing to increase year-on-year. Scotch whisky is also booming. A single bottle of Macallan 1926 60-year-old single malt was recently sold for £1,500,000, with rare whisky claiming growth of 582 per cent, according to the Knight Frank index. A 2012 survey by Barclays Wealth and Investment Management found that 28% of high net worth individuals have a wine collection, and that 2% of their wealth is tied up in wine. With many people not realising that they could be sitting on a goldmine, and the untapped potential that their wines and whiskies may hold, technology is now increasingly helping people navigate the world of fine wines and whiskies. By leveraging technology, companies are now able to value wines instantly online, and provide you with an accurate valuation and quotation for your fine wine. It is worth asking the question: is there value in your cellar or wine collection waiting to be unlocked? jftwines.com

In the process of exploring its graceful, gleaming rivers and high plateaus “as delectable as honey”, she discovered a lot about herself too. Twice the size of the Lake District, East Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park is a wilderness area of crisp, clear lochs, ancient forests and glens bristling with vibrant purple heather. But as days disappear and months march on, there’s an urgency to get moving. I’ve never really understood why time accelerates with age. The harder we grip, the more it slips away. Maybe it’s the realisation that everything is finite, including us. Then there was the risk of being indefinitely confined by anxiety. “If I don’t go out soon, I’ll never have the confidence,” my mum confessed. Caped crusaders: How this timeless classic can transform your autumn wardrobe Prudence Wade takes a look back at the history of the cape, and how it’s being styled today.
64 OCTOBER 2020
I
nstead of moping over the end of summer, cheer yourself up by adding a bit of autumnal drama into your wardrobe. And what better way to do so than with a cape? Capes are the perfect option for confusing, in between weather – they drape delicately over the shoulders, and can be adjusted according to temperature. Like any other trend, the style has fluctuated in and out of fashion – and this autumn, it’s set to be one of the biggest trends in outerwear. But before looking at why everyone from Dior to Celine have fallen back in love with capes, it’s important to understand the style’s history…
Early beginnings…
Now, capes might seem modern and fresh, but the style certainly has a storied past. Over the years, it’s proved a uniquely democratic item of clothing, worn by people of all social statuses. This could be down to its simplicity – all that’s required is a single piece of material, fastened at the throat. Peasants, clergy and nobles alike have worn cloaks from the Roman era through to medieval times and onwards, but all styled slightly differently. After all, not quite everyone could afford the opulent, fur-lined, trailing capes of Henry VIII – peasants were far more likely to fling a length of scratchy sack cloth over their shoulders for warmth.
Different manifestations throughout the 20th century…
Fashion hasn’t been immune to the charms of a cape. It saw a particular resurgence in popularity in the 1920s, when upper-class women realised it could be more easily worn over their fullskirted dresses than a coat. The 1960s saw another manifestation of capes, this time styled into brightlycoloured rain jackets by designers like Mary Quant. Again in the Seventies, poncho styles with intricate knitting and patterns became all the rage among hippies – something Burberry brought back in the 2010s with the help of models like Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne.
Capes today…
Over the last decade, the place you’re most likely to see a cape is the red carpet. The past year alone has seen the Duchess of Sussex wearing a caped fire-engine red evening gown, and Angelina Jolie’s flowing, ethereal outfit for the Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil premiere. There’s something about the drama of a cape, which can be swished around as you leave a room, that makes it perfect for the red carpet. Other than the odd Burberry poncho, capes haven’t been hugely popular in fashion outside of formalwear: until now. The autumn/winter catwalks were full of cloaks, showing just how many ways they can be worn with inspirations plucked from different eras. One of the most wearable ways to style a cape this season is all about keeping things classic in sleek camel colours with gold accents, as seen on the Celine runway. Seventies fashion is still having a moment, and Miu Miu made its cape out of the 1970s favourite of shearling – adding texture and warmth to the style. Dior and Roland Mouret combined capes with another big trend of the season – check – which will no OCTOBER 2020 65

doubt prove just as timeless as camel styles. Another popular style is – gasp – actually practical for the changeable weather. Waterproof, utility-style capes – often with zips, hoods and pockets – show you can be chic and practical at the same time. For a more Gothic take on the trend, go for a simple and chic charcoal grey style – as seen at Michael Kors and the Dior front row. The best thing about capes is how easy they are to style. You barely need to think about the rest of your outfit, because tossing over a cape will lend an easy elegance – not to mention some much-needed warmth. If you are stuck, we particularly like cloaks worn with skinny jeans and boots – to keep everything streamlined, making the cape the star of the show. Throughout history, capes have been worn by all manner of people – and this year, high end and high street designers show there really are no limits to how you wear yours. Although there is one restriction – no arms, please.

Introducing Mameha: The Skincare Disruptor With Heart
“M
ameha means ‘I am here’ in Japanese. Our skincare products are about being present, they’re about saying ‘I am here I am conscious and I am not trying to jump through a hoop to avoid cosmetic surgery ten years from now’” says Ila Colombo, founder and CEO of Mameha a skincare line that is deliberately upending many of the tried and tested methodologies and philosophies of the beauty industry. Speaking over Zoom, Ila resembles an animated version of a beauty shoot. Preternaturally beautiful, her skin is dewy with not a breakout in sight, her eyes bright, her hair glossy, thick and long. But this wasn’t always the case “I suffered with skin dermatitis and since I was a baby I had to use medical grade cortisone creams” A serious episode five years ago was the impetus for her to start seeking alternative solutions, she elaborates: “What I discovered is the cortisone is counter-productive
70 OCTOBER 2020
on many levels [because] it fixes the symptoms but not the root cause.” Indefatigable by nature she took a series of online university courses to gain a deeper understanding of skin and dermatitis in particular. “I basically found out that dermatitis is nothing more than a lack of [being able to] synthesise Vitamin A….By not being able to synthesise vitamin A I am more susceptible to things. So I sought to cure myself [with a combination of] a bigger intake of Vitamin A on a topical level and a nutritional level” Ila’s Eureka moment, of considering the skin’s nutritional needs and not just its aesthetic appearance was further augmented when she drew upon her heritage as both scope for analysis and product development, she adds “This is very much a personal story to me. I am Italian and Brazilian but with a Japanese step father. I have been exposed to these cultures throughout my life…Italy [embraces] diverse nutrition [as part of the Mediterranean diet]…Japan is very interested in skincare
as a health issue..and there is no distinction between men and women as they are totally educated in looking after themselves for the long run…Obviously the Amazon which is part of my journey relates to the basic ingredients as a lot of the ingredients in skincare especially relating to ageing and nutrition come from or were discovered initially in the Amazon rainforest.” Fusing these different knowledge systems resulted in the development of a skincare line which was responsive to the skin’s particular needs rather than merely seeking to mask imperfections. Adopting the Mameha system requires users to view their skincare regimen, rather like their dietary one, where different nutrients are consumed daily to solicit overall wellbeing, boost the skin’s innate ability to repair itself and result in improved complexion. A kit will last a month with only three or four drops needed per application in the morning and evening. Mameha’s futuristic packaging, conceived by award winning designer Ross Lovegrove is intentionally gender neutral and speaks straight to the heart of the brand’s values. Ila elaborates; “Our product is not only gender neutral but ethnic neutral … the skin is an organ that we all have… We have a few parameters that are different like melanin or a man and woman might have different hormones at particular times of the life but apart from those fluctuating times, the skin anatomically is exactly the same. That is why our product is universal in that sense“. A further design masterstroke is the size of the kits, the seven 10 millilitres ampoules are air-travel size compliant but last thrice as long as the average travel kit and are a response to our modern busy schedules as well as the fact that many people live in smaller spaces so storage is an important consideration. Granted the kit is expensive, but pitted against the injectable and cosmo-ceutical offerings on the market, it is a canny investment. When I ask her about how else she chooses to differentiate in the crowded marketplace Ila adds: “We are not trying to bleach or brighten the skin, we are not trying to tan the skin, we are just trying to give the most comprehensive nutrition for health. Health is not beauty enhancement it is just health which consequently is beauty.” In an age of seeking photoshop perfection, launching in early 2021 Mameha is a refreshing response to an industry that often preys on customer’s insecurities. Instead it aims to equip and empower. - Written by Mazzi Odu To order visit mamehaskin.com OCTOBER 2020 71

Check prints to sharp tailoring Here’s how to wear a waistcoat in 2020. Prudence Wade takes a look at fashion’s favourite androgynous style. 72 OCTOBER 2020
trousers, jackets and waistcoats all in similar patterns and colours. Call it the Clueless effect – the film might be 25 years old, but it still seems like we’re learning style lessons from it. On the more extreme side of things is Burberry’s take on the trend, with model Joan Smalls wearing a full suit and waistcoat in a mix of houndstooth and the iconic Nova print. If this was a bit too much for you, you can still get in on the fad by wearing a check suit and picking out a matching waistcoat within the same colour scheme – a la Cher in Clueless. Even if the waistcoat itself isn’t check, make sure the rest of your outfit is.
Masculine tailoring
With the lines between male and female dressing becoming increasingly blurred, waistcoats – traditionally part of a masculine three-piece suit – are the perfect way to bring some androgyny into your outfit. Paired with a matching suit and jacket, it’s a sharp and modern take on the trend. You can experiment with silhouettes and colour schemes, perhaps going for classical tailoring in an unexpected colour, or over-size the proportions for a playful interpretation of the look.
Nothing underneath
W
hen you think of relaxed and understated cool in fashion, waistcoats might not be the first thing that spring to mind. After all, the last time you wore one was likely the mid-Noughties, chasing after the Boho style of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss. Like so many trends from the 2000s, waistcoats have since been banished from our wardrobes and minds. However, last year saw a resurgence in the popularity of waistcoats for men – largely thanks to England manager Gareth Southgate’s tailored styling at the football World Cup – and now it would seem like the look is seeing a renaissance in womenswear too. Big fashion brands, from Dior to Burberry, have realised there’s a modern way to wear a waistcoat, as it’s actually an incredibly versatile and hardworking piece of clothing – and it’s perfect as we come up to the dog days of summer and need to start thinking about transitional dressing. Now is the time to forget any preconceptions around waistcoats, because they’re making a comeback. Here’s how to wear a tailored vest in 2020…
Check prints
From Burberry to Louis Vuitton, major labels have fallen in love with check-print waistcoats. Perhaps it’s because there’s something vintage about the style, as well as going hand-in-hand with another major trend of the season for extreme matching. There’s been an uptick in matching your whole outfit both on the runways and on Instagram, with fashion fans wearing
At the other end of the spectrum, an ultra-feminine way to wear waistcoats is with nothing underneath. This demonstrates just how versatile they are: while waistcoats are perfect layered on top of a turtleneck for an autumnal day, when the weather warms up, they’re just as suitable on their own. When worn like this with jeans, a simple black waistcoat channels Ninetiesinspired minimalism. Layer with lots of delicate necklaces to really capture the vibe.
Loose and chic
Women wearing waistcoats might still seem subversive, but it’s by no means a new thing. It was a particularly popular style back in the Seventies, with fashion icons like Bianca Jagger and Jane Fonda championing waistcoats – not to mention Diane Keaton’s iconic outfit in the 1977 film Annie Hall. To tap into the Seventies vibe without feeling dated, opt for loose silhouettes in light materials like crepe or linen. It’s all about a relaxed approach to the trend. We particularly like lighter colours for this look – like creams or pale pinks – when the weather is warm, but the style works just as well for more wintry weather in black or charcoal colours. For a real Seventies look, layer your waistcoat with lots of other tops and jackets. If you can’t find actual waistcoats that work for this, ‘sleeveless blazers’ fit the bill just as well. ounded by shoe designer Harriet Louisa Morris, Harry Lou Shoes is an exclusive, luxury footwear label that focuses on ease, comfort, and understated glamour. Launched in 2020, the brand originates from a challenging period in Harriet’s life, while going through a divorce and living in Portugal. Harriet set out to design a stable and reliable shoe, something lacking in her late marriage. Seeking solace, she visited local medieval churches and began photographing Portuguese tiles in houses, and along the walls decorating the local villages. It was here, as the designer’s cultural fascination grew, that the idea for Harry Lou’s effortless footwear was conceived. Feeling empowered to embark upon on a new creative venture, Harriet looks to the words of Maya Angelou who said, ‘My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.’ Each collection showcases an outstanding talent for accessory design, evident in the silhouettes’ vivacious and joyful platform where comfort is at the very core. Skilled artisans construct the shoes in Sao João de Madeira in Porto, an area renowned for its impeccable shoe manufacturing. All designs are set upon a luxurious foam-filled suede insole and accentuated with the Harry Lou signature logo – printed in a variety of non-alphabet languages to acknowledge and respect our array of global cultures. Furthermore, every mule features sourced materials ethically and is characterised by a foot framing front strap and a high and low platform wedge heel alongside Harriet’s penchant for baroque pearls and diamanté embellishments trimming the edges. Within Harry Lou’s most recent collection, entitled

Harry Lou shoes are crafted using an innovative technique that takes its cues from traditional Japanese shoe design. Every shoe creation is tailor-made to display a signature Myosote process. The fabric is sustainably sourced, dyed, stamped, and oiled for longevity to create a unique embossed effect reminiscent of Koi Carp scales. The finished result showcases a delicate Japanese floral pattern, offset with sparkling diamanté studs and a micro pearl trim framing the contours of the shoe. A brief history of the cardigan, from The Queen to Taylor Swift 76 OCTOBER 2020
The humble cardi is becoming cool again. By Katie Wright
T
o mark the release of her new album Folklore and first single Cardigan, Taylor Swift took the unusual step of selling an actual cardigan alongside more traditional merchandise, like hoodies and T-shirts. A replica of the one Swift wears in her Cardigan video – a thick cable knit V-neck sweater in cream with black stripe edging, that has three stars on each sleeve – has already sold out on the singer’s online store. Famous fans including actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Kobe Bryant’s daughter Natalia have posted photos on Instagram wearing the cardigans, they’d been gifted by the singer. It’s surprising to see such a wintry garment gaining popularity in summer, but the cardigan has a way of popping back into fashion just when it seems to have gone for good,. From its earliest origins to the present day, here some of the faces who have helped make the cardigan famous…
“Inspired by the legendary designer’s early work, cardigans and knitted jackets are still seen on the Chanel catwalk and in boutiques today”
7th Earl of Cardigan
The knitted sweater takes its name from the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, a lieutenant general in the British army. Lord Cardigan, famous for leading the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War, was known for wearing a short, woollen sleeveless waistcoat to keep warm during the failed offensive in the 1800s. It is thought to have been trimmed in fur. After the war, the practical knitwear item reportedly became rather popular outside the military, and cardigans began to be widely produced.
Coco Chanel
Credited with popularising cardigans for women in the 1920s, it’s said that French fashion designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel preferred a button-down sweater because she didn’t like the way traditional pullovers messed up her hair when she put them on. Inspired by the legendary designer’s early work, cardigans and knitted jackets are still seen on the Chanel catwalk and in boutiques today.
Queen Elizabeth II
While the Queen favours brightly coloured coat dresses for formal occasions, when it comes to off-duty style, Her Majesty is all about cardigans. Usually teaming a blouse and pleated skirt with a loose, open cardigan in a muted hue, the Queen has been pictured in buttondown sweaters for decades, most recently when the monarch met her newest great grandchild, Archie.
Kurt Cobain
At the other end of the style spectrum, rock icon Kurt Cobain introduced a whole new generation to the cardigan in the Nineties. The Nirvana frontman took an item of clothing usually seen on grannies and grandpas and made it cool, wearing moth-eaten chunky knits with band T-shirts and battered jeans. One of the singer’s most famous cardigans, worn for the band’s 1993 MTV Unplugged gig, sold at auction for $334,000 (£260,000).
Michelle Obama
Preppy, fine-knit cardigans from brands like J. Crew were a mainstay in Michelle Obama’s wardrobe as First Lady, reportedly leading to a spike in sales as fans sought to emulate her elegant style. On the night Barack Obama was elected as President in 2008, the First Lady wore a black cardigan over her red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress.
Taylor Swift
Now, with the release of Folklore, Taylor Swift has put the cardigan back on the map once more. Given the pop star’s huge reach (she has 137.5 million followers on Instagram) we predict we’ll be seeing more cosy cardis in the shops once autumn rolls round. OCTOBER 2020 77

The Benefits of using Rickman Properties
B
ack at the start of 2001, when ‘Rickman Properties’ was in its infancy stage, people thought it was just another ordinary ‘Estate agent’ in Kensington! But little did they realise that after 19 years they are firmly established as NOT just an ordinary ‘Estate agent’ but an agent who has a reputation for being “Internationally Respected, Locally Renowned” in their profession. Founded by Kieran Ryan, who previously co-founded & established another successful four office agency based in West London called ‘John Spencer’ which he sold. John Spencer’s final acquisition was Kensington’s oldest established Independent Estate agent ‘Lawson & Herman’ based in Abingdon road. (We still use their same telephone number)! It was here that the admiration for the Royal Borough was firmly cemented in Kieran’s mind. It was at this juncture that ‘Rickman’ was formed as Kieran felt that there were too many corporate agents, all offering the same old routine service without any actual professionalism, personality, and effectiveness in Kensington & Chelsea. 100% independent, Rickman has grown in statue in the Royal Borough with many vendors, Tenants, Landlords & Purchasers using our services whether it be either selling or letting their home, servicing the requirements from purchasers & tenants alike,
managing a large proportion of residential landlords property and offering a first class acquisition service. Being members of National association of Estate agents, The Association of Residential Letting agents, the property ombudsman scheme and are the ONLY members of the Guild of Independent Estate agents representing Kensington, you as a client are fully protected. Here at Rickman we feel we go that extra mile on providing you, our clients, a first-class service which we are sure you will not be disappointed with. In this edition of House Magazines we have included just an example (Clabon Mews – freehold House) of our recent successes which proves that we are ‘proActive’ and not re-active’ in this extremely competitive marketplace. If you are only considering selling or letting your home, then please feel free to call our office to provide you with an up to date free market appraisal or if your property is currently on the market then we can offer you a totally independent opinion. (However, we recommend that you read your current agents Terms & conditions). We look forward to hearing from you. 020 79379777 info@rickmanproperties.com

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT ARCHITECTS? BEFORE
AFTER
M
any people considering work on their homes will ask themselves the question, do I need an architect? For simple things the answer is no, but for anything more complicated, where the appearance matters, an architect is essential. A home is a huge investment - to enhance it aesthetically is to enhance its value. It’s worth spending time searching websites to find an architect’s work that you like. The natural way of choosing is to be drawn, instinctively and aesthetically to the designs. A building project is a long process – truly a journey – it’s important that you employ an architect in harmony with what you wish to achieve. An architect will be a mentor and a guide. Everyone is different and our designs are unique, bespoke for our individual clients. We design more than just the building, but parts of the building: fireplaces, cornices, fitted furniture, etc. Appearance and style are only two of the balls to be juggled. The design has to be practical and functional. It must be structurally sound and meet all the other requirements of the Building Regulations. It should, address climate change issues: being long life, long energy, and sustainable. And whatever is designed must be capable of obtaining planning permission, when it is needed. We have an excellent record of obtaining planning permission in difficult and controversial cases. So, there we are, you have a design that ticks all the boxes, all that

remains is to turn the design into reality – to get it built. Just as important as finding an architect whose work you like, is to ask how does the architect perform? What do others say about him? Take up references. What experience does he have of similar projects? Does the architect work in your area? He doesn’t have to be local, but it’s essential that he can visit site and meet regularly with you. During construction, we visit site once a week and every two or three weeks with our clients. To conclude a good architect, is a one-stop-shop of skill and experience. Your architect, will design something that delights you, steer it through the maze of regulations, and then do all that is necessary to get it built, your dreams translated into reality and value added to your home – that’s what is so special about architects! rtarchitects.co.uk E: mail@rtarchitects.co.uk T: 02072611984

Charley Chau was founded ‘by accident’ after endless frustrating searches for a dog bed that was both comfortable and stylish. Prompted by yet another disastrous dog bed purchase that went lumpy after one wash sisters Christine and Jenny Chau sat on the sitting room floor one afternoon and hand-stitch two Snuggle Beds for Christine’s Italian Greyhounds, Charley and Anna. The dogs absolutely loved the Snuggle Beds and after posting photos on Facebook, Christine was inundated by friends asking her to make beds for their dogs. And so, in August 2010, Charley Chau was born – no shiny business plan, no plan at all in fact, just a passion for creating dog beds that were super-cosy, stylish and practical. Charley Chau was meant to be a quirky little hobby but in 2012, the sisters found that their small business had taken on a life of its own and it was no longer possible to fit it in around their jobs in the
City. It was decision time – close down or give up their successful City careers. Charley Chau won and the sisters have never looked back. Sadly, Charley left this world suddenly and unexpectedly in 2019 but, as the company that bears his name enters its second decade, he leaves a brilliant legacy. From humble beginnings on the sitting room floor, Charley Chau’s customers range from ordinary dog folk to baronesses and billionaires across the globe, all with one thing in common – they want the absolute best for their dogs! Coldharbour Lights
L
ighting designer Lottie Davies is a native Londoner with roots in southern Spain and western Wales. At the heart of her practice is a love of play, palpable in her designs and fundamental to her first career as a theatre actor. Lottie has always had this dual interest, starting with her degree combining Theatre with Art & Design. She went on to train at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School where, for two years, a core class was Analysis of Movement; of materials, of the elements and colours to name a few. This continues to inform her work. Lottie says: “For my two-tiered feather light shade, the Bertie, the rhythmic swing of the chains, the madness of the movement of light through the crystals and the soft ruffle of a breeze through the feathers are all ludic and essential aspects of the design. So too is the soft weightlessness of the feathers, thrown into relief by the weight of the cold, hard crystals. I can envisage how actors or dancers could embody these elements on stage. That’s why these creations are more than light shades to me, they can be another presence in a room; a playful and responsive element that can be interacted with through touch, light and movement.” Lottie had a first taste of selling her own designs at the age of 14 in Portobello Road Market where she had a tiny corner of a stall to sell her wire jewellery from. Lottie describes it as her first taste of the double satisfaction of not only making something beautiful, but of finding someone else who loves it enough to buy it. Lottie is proudly European. She spent several years in her 20s living in Italy and France and speaks four languages. In the 1990s she toured theatre shows in France and 20 years later she returned to Paris to show at the international interiors show, Maison & Objet in 2019. 2020’s plans have been postponed to 2021 when Lottie looks forward to taking Coldharbour Lights to The International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York in the spring and The
