Kathryn says that the most important thing is to match what people need (physically, financially and emotionally) with the right hotel. ”Some people want activity, others want complete rest. Some want to meet others, others don’t want to talk to a soul! Some want the structure of a schedule, others want complete freedom to make their own choices. Some want to detox, others want to start the day with coffee and finish it with wine”.
After 20 years in the business, Kathryn and her team know how to guide every customer towards their own ideal wellness escape. It’s an investment in yourself that can transform how you feel for months after, so if you’re planning a reboot, take time to get some expert advice.
Autumn can feel like quite a pressured time of year. Stresses can creep in and we may feel a little sluggish physically after an overindulgent summer. It’s a great time of year to build in some time to escape to give yourself a physical ‘reset’. A wellness holiday can do just this.
“A wellness holiday can be tailored to any needs”, says Kathryn Brierley, founder of The Healthy Holiday Company. “Life has become too fast, too stressful and we all need to find time to press pause and focus on our own wellbeing so that we can deal mentally and physically with everything that is thrown at us.”
Some of her clients want to lose weight and detox with medical expertise, others want to work on their fitness, pilates or yoga, while some just want to move between sunbed and massage table.
So what does Kathryn recommend?
“Kamalaya and Chiva Som in Thailand are stunning options, which offer allround wellness programmes. The Ananda in India, Santani in Sri Lanka and Shanti Maurice in Mauritius can offer blissful Ayurveda, spa and yoga escapes. ALL FIRED UP FOR THE RM SOTHEBY’S LONDON TO BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RUN 2023
Sunday 5th November 2023
In true tradition, the Royal Automobile Club, in partnership with RM Sotheby’s, will be staging the remarkable event on the first Sunday in November.
Crowds can expect a magnificent spectacle with the rare opportunity to watch more than 400+ owners of prized pre-1905 horseless carriages embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront. Some will be petrolpowered, some run on steam - and there are even some electric models! Also watch out for early bicycles, including high wheelers (‘penny farthings’) and motorcycles.
A group of intrepid early motorists set off to mark the life-changing moment when motorists were finally given the freedom of the open road and the arrival of a new era of mechanical horsepower.
This year’s RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the classic British comedy film Genevieve which was originally released to huge critical acclaim in 1953.The muchloved, BAFTA-winning movie follows the adventures of two couples participating in the annual London to Brighton event when driving a pair of early veteran cars.
Now, to mark the magical milestone both
film star cars – the eponymous 1904 Darracq after which the film is named and 1905 Spyker – are being reunited once again.
On leaving Hyde Park at the break of dawn at 7am, the veteran cars will pass many iconic landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge. Participants then leave London via Kennington, Clapham and Morden, before passing Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth, Reigate and Redhill. From there it takes the A23 to Horley and Crawley where the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive.
Watching the Run is a fantastic experience for spectators - the route ensures there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way. WESTMINSTER SECURITY London Watch Thefts
a replica and freely hand it over if attacked. However, if you insist on wearing your luxury watch you must realise you are making yourself a target.”
Unfortunately, London has become the epicentre of a watch theft epidemic where violent and often armed assailants are mugging unsuspecting luxury watch owners in the streets for their expensive timepieces. In 2022 there were over 6,000 reported watch thefts in London with an average value of £9,000, around £54m worth stolen last year alone. And 2023 is shaping up to be much worse.
So, what can you do to protect yourself in these testing times? We spoke to John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd, a world-leading personal protection company based in central London. John said: “Sadly, this is the world we now live in. Watch theft is more lucrative than other crimes and there is little deterrent to street gangs…there are spotters at luxury retailers, high-end bars, and restaurants preying on vulnerable watch owners. The obvious deterrent is to leave your watch at home in a safe, or even wear
John advised: “Don’t get too intoxicated, don’t trust a stranger who is suddenly taking a lot of interest in befriending you, don’t walk alone, and always remain aware of your surroundings. If followed, run for help if you can, if attacked hand over your watch it is not worth dying for. Make sure your watch is insured and have it valued each year.”
How can Westminster Security help? “We provide discreet close protection operatives (bodyguards) to accompany or shadow our clients on nights out, watching their backs and those around them; for us, it is second nature spotting undesirables up to no good. We have thwarted many potential situations, and not always directly for our clients but their friends, colleagues, and other venue patrons.”
How much does a bodyguard cost? “Some clients spend several hundred or thousands on a bottle of champagne on a night out, we are not that expensive but if you can afford a luxury lifestyle it is worth paying for peace of mind”.

SHARES IN BANKSY’S VALENTINE’S DAY MASCARA MURAL OFFERED TO PUBLIC
By Anahita Hossein-Pour
The public can now buy a piece of a Banksy mural first discovered on the side of a house in Margate in shares of £120 each.
Banksy’s Valentine’s Day Mascara, which appeared on February 14, depicts a 1950s housewife with a swollen eye and missing tooth, wearing an apron and yellow washing-up gloves, and throwing a man into a freezer.
From August 22, art enthusiasts have been able to buy a share of the street art, which has been valued at £6 million total.
A total of 27,000 shares have been made available via marketplace Showpiece.
The artwork was moved to the seaside town’s amusement park Dreamland for public display following its discovery – it is hoped this will remain its official home.
A Dreamland spokesperson said they were “delighted” to be able to continue to give the artwork a home where members of the public could see it for free when the theme park was open.
The original owner of the mural has been represented by Red Eight Gallery.
The gallery’s chief executive Julian Usher said: “I’m so pleased that the Banksy work can be hosted at Dreamland, so that it remains in the town for everyone to come and see.
“The fact that it will be accessible for people to actually own a share in is wonderful, and it also means the mural can now make Margate its official home.”
Showpiece bosses are also raising funds for the national domestic abuse charity Refuge.
Managing director of Showpiece Aaron Carter said: “Like many of Banksy’s works, Valentine’s Day Mascara highlights a serious subject matter.
“We hope that by working with our charity partners, we can continue to promote the work they accomplish and support the causes Banksy is concerned with.”

FOSTERING FUTURE Readiness
Head of College, Steven Turner, explains how Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) in North Yorkshire prepares its students for successful futures in an everchanging world, whilst empowering them to become well-rounded and happy individuals.
“QE takes pride in fostering future readiness in our students through instilling transferable life skills, providing the mindset needed to thrive and inspiring them to become lifelong learners who make a positive difference to our community and to society”.
“This year, we introduced our Stretch and Challenge Programme which goes beyond the confines of the classroom and encourages students to seek opportunities that enrich their learning journey and foster a lifelong passion for knowledge. This includes attending industry professional and alumni lectures, entering internal and external competitions, and partaking in both personal and group research projects.”
“This year saw students from QE College win first place in the ISA Photography, Monologue, and Young Musician of the Year Awards, gain eleven Elite Awards at the Oxford University Computing Challenge, two Maclaurian Mathematics Awards, 27
Gold Awards at the Science Olympiads, and a prestigious Roentgenium Award in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.”
“In addition, one student had his economics research paper on the ‘Motivations of Impulse Buying of Luxury Goods’ published by Atlantis Press. It is through this approach of developing students interests and achievements beyond the curriculum that we distinguish our students from their peers. By providing them with opportunities to challenge themselves and gain invaluable hands-on experience, we are equipping them with essential future-ready skills for further education and beyond”.
Nestled in 220 acres of countryside between Harrogate and York, QE is a co-educational day and boarding school for students from 3 months to 19 years, known for its academic success and state-of-the-art facilities.
A set of four ‘family-feel’ schools linked together as one ‘Team QE’, the Collegiate hosts a dynamic community of aspirational, future-ready learners, who feel a real sense of belonging. Contact admissions@qe.org to book onto their open mornings on 18th November and 27th January. Alternatively, email to organise a private tour or visit qe.org to find out more.

ST DUNSTAN’S COLLEGE
London’s most progressive school preparing students for tomorrow’s world
St Dunstan’s College, Lewisham, south London, has championed a progressive approach to education for over a century, with the opening vision of the school in 1888 being to provide a curriculum ‘in advance of the present time.’
The school’s first Head, Charles Maddock Stuart, was a pioneer in heuristic education, stating that it is not so much what a child knows that is important but more how (he) comes to know it – a revolutionary concept for the time. St Dunstan’s was one of the first schools in the country to have science and technology laboratories built to service a curriculum with significant time devoted to hands-on scientific and practical experiments.
Today, St Dunstan’s modern senior school curriculum builds on the legacy of its founding Heads. Students enter the school embarking on a Rennaisance education, studying a deliberately wide range of academic subjects whilst proactively developing skills and thinking that will support them for life, and committing to a variety of co-curricular activities in a programme that is embedded into the timetable and structured around the College’s values. The school, led by Nick Hewlett, believes that this classically liberal education promotes a lifetime of inquisitive independence, allowing young people to approach new and challenging concepts with courage and conviction and to be best equipped for an uncertain future.
‘Our world is changing at breakneck speed. A truly globalised future dominated by AI and biotechnology will require different skills and attributes from the young people we are educating today,’ Head Nick Hewlett explains. ‘Our social values are more precious to us than ever before, and so are they under threat, as we inhabit a society where the art of rhetoric has diminished and the polarised, entrenched view has consumed us, amplified as it is through the platform of globalised cyber-space. We have a duty to respond to this in the curriculum we offer.’
St Dunstan’s bold and brave approach to education has led to the school winning many accolades. Last month, the school was named the ‘Most progressive independent school in London’ at the Private Education Awards 2023. Last year, St Dunstan’s was also named Independent Senior School of the Year at the Tes Schools Awards in London, which are known as the Oscars of education.
St Dunstan’s College offers a variety of scholarships and bursaries for students joining at 11+ and 16+. Find out more information and book at stdunstans.org.uk

INSPIRING BRILLIANT FUTURES IN THE HEART OF DULWICH
Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery, Dulwich, south London, is an independent, co-educational day prep school for children aged 2 and half to 11.
The school’s motto ‘Inspiring Brilliant Futures’ is at the forefront of all the school does. Their focus is providing a unique education to each and every child, nurturing their individual strengths, interests and needs.
Speaking about the school, newly-appointed Head, Graeme McCafferty says: ‘At Rosemead, we strive to provide a balanced curriculum that nurtures the holistic development of each child. While academic achievement is important, we firmly believe that education should encompass much more than just exams and grades.
‘Our approach is centered around ensuring that your child receives a well-rounded education that includes a strong emphasis on Music, Art, Drama, and Sport, without compromising on academic excellence.’
‘Every year, we witness the artistic talents of our children as they win National Art Awards and perform in breathtaking productions. Moreover, our sporting achievements are equally commendable, with several students qualifying and competing at the National Athletics competition in Birmingham this year.’
Most recently, Rosemead merged with St Dunstan’s College to create a community of schools consisting of St Dunstan’s Junior School, St Dunstan’s Senior School and Rosemead Preparatory School. Speaking about the merger, Rosemead Head, Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘This is such an incredible opportunity for sharing best practice, working collaboratively and sharing experience to make all schools in the community unique, excellent educational establishments. We have a shared vision to provide an ambitious, forward-thinking education to the young people under our care and to ensure that, in so doing, we both inspire and support each child to thrive as an individual.’
He added: ‘There are numerous advantages presented by the merger. For children, we can share facilities, resources and learning opportunities. For staff, we can share best practice and work collaboratively through staff training and development. It is probably the most exciting and significant development for Rosemead in its 80-year history.’

As visitors explore the sprawling reserve on foot or on the private golf buggy which comes with selected overnight stays, they will come face-to-face with species including gorillas, three different species of rhino, tigers, giraffe, zebra and many more.
Port Lympne’s overnight stays range from cosy cabins and transparent bubble domes offering incredible views to wildly popular luxury lodges adjoining the lion and tiger enclosures. The most popular of these accommodations is undoubtedly Lion Lodge, a fully immersive experience where guests have the rare opportunity to sleep just a whisker from lions. The lodges – which have quickly become celeb favourites – feature picture windows with views directly into the lion enclosure from the open plan living room and master bedroom. Guests can even enjoy an outdoor, wood-fired bath while they watch the lions!
Just a short stroll from Lion Lodge, guests will discover The Garden Room Restaurant & Bar, Port Lympne’s flagship restaurant.
The Garden Room’s carefully curated menu, created by Executive Head Chef Lee Edney, is a celebration of the seasonal harvest and brings together the very best ingredients from Kent and beyond. The beautiful interior and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant makes it the ideal place for couples and families to relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings of Port Lympne.
Overnight stays at Port Lympne are available from £99 for a cosy Pinewood glamping hut to £1,575 for Lion Lodge. portlympne.com

WAGGING TAILS AT WINTERTON-ON-SEA
Why pups of all shapes and sizes will love dog-friendly Winterton-on-Sea.
By Kerri-Ann Rope
The stretch of beach below us is lined with seals of all colours and sizes, some frolicking in the waves while others lie on the shore. It’s not the view you’d expect to see as you walk over the dunes at Norfolk’s Horsey beach, but it’s just one of the hidden delights the area has to offer.
What’s more, my four-legged, furry pup of a different breed, Puck, has been allowed to take in the scenic delight from atop the dunes alongside me.
Friends of Horsey Seals volunteer wardens are positioned on the dunes to ensure the safety of the seals, whose pupping period in the area lasts from November to late January/early February.
It’s refreshing that all (well-behaved) dogs are allowed, on leads, to join their owners. But it also speaks to the larger dog-friendly
ethos of the area, especially Winterton-on-Sea, which is a 12-minute drive from Horsey beach, and also boasts its own spectacular stretch of coastline.
As every dog owner will know, holiday properties are so often billed as ‘dog safe’, only to not live up to that reputation.
But on arrival at Winterton Cottages’ The Cranny, which has capacity for four humans and two dogs, it is undoubtedly the most dog secure property I’ve stayed in to date.
UK STAYCATIONS
70 O CTOBER 2023
The spacious garden (a treat from my tiny London-sized outdoor space) is beautifully kept but also very dog proof, and it’s clear some thought has gone into making sure that any potential, furry, four-legged escape artists would have a difficult time breaking out of here.
As the owner of a small dog who tries out their Houdini skills regularly, it’s a great peace of mind to know he won’t be wandering off to the beach on a solo mission.
The property itself, a double thatched roundhouse, is also centrally situated, with the beach a few minutes’ walk down the road – and a dog-friendly, very welcoming pub, Fishermans Return, also just a short amble away.
Arriving and checking-in to the self-catering cottage couldn’t be more effortless too, and another impressive, customer-friendly addition to the stay is the digital welcome book.
It’s packed with so many good recommendations about the area, the property and more, that I didn’t find myself reaching for my phone once to have to do an internet search of places to visit or things to do.
The beach in Winterton is heavenly, with its clean stretches of sand, and dogs frolicking to their hearts’ content. It feels like a total luxury to be able to walk your dog on such a clean beach that is so well maintained.
In addition, all the dog owners we encounter are friendly – there’s no dog snobbery here at all.
But everyone seems very respectful of putting dogs on leads when needed and making sure the experience is enjoyable for everyone.
The beach also has paths that link to the Norfolk Coast Path, so
if you don’t want to wander on the shore, you can head down a path on the dunes with your dog in tow.
The walk to nearby Hemsby is an estimated two miles. And during a look around Winterton-onSea, you won’t be able to miss the cottages in the same style as The Cranny, but situated in another part of the town, as part of holiday park Hermanus Holidays.
The circular roundhouses with thatched roofs are so named after buildings designed in the same style from South African seaside town Hermanus, which is co-incidentally where some of my family is based back in South Africa.
If you fancy a morning trip, heading with your dog to the nearby Horsey Windpump is highly recommended, and it also includes a walk that will take you down to the beach and back if you want to do a longer day out.
The Horsey Windpump, a Norfolk Broads landmark in the care of the National Trust, is also a great location for doing some bird watching, and its small sensory garden and paths surrounding the area are great to explore with your dog at your side.
Poppy’s, a tea room in Winterton-on-Sea, is highly recommended and you may even get to meet Poppy the dog, who it’s named after. It is also the location of the Post Office and is stocked with groceries and some essentials you may need if you’re staying in a self-catering abode.
During both of our visits there, our dog was very welcomed and we were surrounded by other dog owners stopping in for a tea or snack.
The 300-year-old free house, Fishermans Return, has a ‘dog friendly Norfolk’ sticker on one of its doors and it couldn’t be more true that the pub and area is a dream if you’re a dog owner.
It’s all pawsitively welcoming and a four paws up break where not only you, but your dog, can relax in beautiful surroundings.
HOW TO PLAN YOUR TRIP
Winterton Cottages (01493 800 645) offers a seven-night stay at The Cranny (sleeps four) from £638 and a three-night weekend break from £415. Two dogs welcome. Winterton Cottages features over 40 stunning holiday homes in Winterton-on-Sea and the surrounding villages of East Somerton and Martham. A PERFECT HIDEAWAY
When Clare and Andrew Hart launched Hart Lake Escapes during the late Queen’s Jubilee in June last year, their first guest said the destination is: “An amazing, romantic getaway, straight out of the pages of a fairytale”. Since then, visitors’ reviews describe a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing place, a hidden gem, and “a paradise we didn’t want to leave”.
“We have only been open just over a year, but visitors are already returning –one couple have stayed four times,” say Clare and Andrew, who are reviewed as “the most fantastic and welcoming hosts”. “Hart Lake Escapes has become a popular destination for relaxation and escape time to share with loved ones or close friends,” they add.
The five exquisite self-contained shepherd’s huts on the eastern edge of York, offer a spacious stay for two adults, nestling in woodland around a small private lake. Family run and set within the Hart’s home grounds, an old hunting lodge dating back to the Duke of Sutherland, each hut is named after the home of resident wildlife – The Nest, The Den, The Warren, The Roost, The Hallow.
Each has a private kitchen and ensuite facilities, log burner, barbecue area, and a wood fired hot tub on a private outside seating area that is not overlooked. “We have designed the spacious interiors to the high standard we would expect when we go away for a break,” says Andrew. “Our king size beds are comfortable with mattresses made in Yorkshire, there are Neal’s Yard Remedies toiletries and a Bose speaker system, because we like the best.”
You can be assured of a warm welcome on arrival from the Hart family. If you order in advance, Clare will prepare a slow cooker with a piping hot meal she creates from Yorkshire produce. “The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to cook, but arriving
to delicious homemade food has become a favourite,” Clare says. “We also supply complimentary welcome baskets, barbecue packs with meat from our local butcher, two types of breakfast packs, cream teas with homemade scones and we have teamed up with Yorkshire Heart for beer and wine orders.”
Guests also comment on the beautiful scent that greets them in the shepherd’s huts. The Harts curated a bespoke reed diffuser from Eboracum Candles in York. “Our guests love the scent so much that they buy our diffusers to take home,” adds Clare.
If you can drag yourself away from the beautiful surroundings, Hart Lake Escapes is ideally located to visit many places, including York, which is only a 15-minute bus journey away (the bus stops outside the property and runs until after 11pm). In the opposite direction, the Howardian Hills are a 13-minute drive away, encompassing renowned Castle Howard, nearby Malton and the North Yorkshire coast.
Prices remain the same all year round. “We don’t penalise people who can only go away during the school holidays,” Clare adds.
“We welcome those who work in schools and other termtime occupations, or couples who want to take a break without their children during peak times. It will cost you the same to stay at New Year as any other time of the year.”

HOW THE BRAND EVOLVED FROM HUMBLE RAINCOAT MAKER TO LUXURY FASHION GIANT
90 OCTOBER 2023 FASHION & BEAUTY
Katie Wright traces the 167-year history of the iconic British brand.
Always one of the most eagerly awaited events at London Fashion Week, the Burberry catwalk show attracts A-list celebrities, high-profile fashion editors and the biggest influencers from around the world.
Last season, supermodel Naomi Campbell sat alongside Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham on the front row to watch chief creative officer Daniel Lee unveil his debut collection, and expectations were high for the designer’s second show, which took place on September 18.
Coveted by consumers across the globe, the luxury label is perhaps the most famous British fashion brand, but it hasn’t always been such a hot property. We look back at the tumultuous history of Burberry…
Adventurous origins
The brand was founded in 1856 when 21-year-old former draper’s apprentice Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Focused on creating outerwear that shielded wearers from typical British weather, the founder invented gabardine – a water-resistant but breathable fabric –and patented it in 1888.
“Prior to this, waterproof clothing was
made of rubberised cotton which was cumbersome, not breathable and certainly not chic,” explains celebrity fashion stylist Miranda Holder.
“In contrast, garbadine’s individual fibres were waterproofed before the weaving process, creating a lighter, more fluid and comfortable piece.”
In early examples of celebrity endorsement, Norwegian explorer and zoologist Dr Fridtjof Nansen wore Burberry gabardine when he sailed to the Arctic Circle in 1893, while famed British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton chose the outerwear for three expeditions in the early 1900s.
The war years
The now-iconic Burberry trench coat was invented during WWI
OCTOBER 2023 91
“In 1955, Queen Elizabeth II granted Burberry a royal warrant as a weatherproofer, and by the Swinging Sixties business was booming, with the brand saying it made one in five coats exported from Britain”
with a range of features designed for military use – including the gun flap and D-rings to carry grenades – many of which remain today.
“Each classic Burberry trench is composed of 90 individual, specially shaped components,” says Savile Row tailor Alexandra Wood, founder of Alexandra Wood Bespoke.
“The key design elements include its double-breasted front, shoulder epaulettes, beige colour, belted waist, buckled cuffs, storm flap, and a checked lining that the brand has become synonymous with.”
The distinctive beige Burberry ‘nova check’ was introduced in the 1920s and is still used as a lining now, with the ever-popular trench coats retailing from around £1,500.
“The appeal of the Burberry trench has to be largely due to its adaptability,” says Holder.
“The coat’s pale beige colour perfectly lends itself to a myriad of different outfit options, and the flash of luxury lining – nova check or not – makes it instantly recognisable as a luxury piece.”
The royal seal of approval
In 1955, Queen Elizabeth II granted Burberry a royal warrant as a weatherproofer, and by the Swinging Sixties business was booming, with the brand saying it made one in five coats exported from Britain.
The nova check graduated from discreet lining to designer status
symbol, with coats, scarves and umbrellas in the beige print proving popular with shoppers in the Seventies.
In 1990, Burberry secured its second royal warrant, as an outfitter, from the now King.
Noughties notoriety
After decades of success, the Burberry shine was tarnished when a more mainstream audience embraced nova check in the late 1990s, snapping up entry-level items and causing the brand to discontinue sales of
baseball caps.
“The pattern soon filtered down to the high streets and eventually the football terraces – it remains one of the most copied counterfeit designs today,” says Holder.
“As a result Burberry’s star fell hard, the brand losing any exclusivity it once had, being unable to control who wore the label.”
Paparazzi photos of Eastenders actress Danniella Westbrook in head to toe nova check were seen as the final nail in the coffin, she adds: “Danniella was getting a lot of very negative publicity at the time, relegating the designer to the bins of bad taste.”
The catwalk comeback
Attempting to rehabilitate the brand as the new millennium dawned, Burberry opened its first store on upmarket Bond Street in 2000 and brought in 29-year-old Christopher Bailey as design director the following year.
“Christopher Bailey made a significant impact during his tenure as creative director by modernising Burberry’s image, introducing digital innovations, and collaborating with artists and musicians,” says Wood.
“It made Burberry fresher and more relevant and helped to make the brand have an edge, whilst remaining sympathetic to its crisp, British design aesthetic.”
Scaling back production of nova check, Bailey brought glamour to the brand and staged blockbuster catwalk shows with live music from artists such as Tom Odell and James Bay.
“He updated the classic trench, putting new twists on the heritage design and bringing in supermodel Kate Moss to give it a new lease of life,” Holder says.
“Bailey successfully repositioned Burberry as an industry leader and innovator, and as a result, tickets to their catwalk shows were some of the most sought after on the London Fashion Week schedule.”

A-list appeal
Following the departure of Christopher Bailey with a memorable rainbow-themed catwalk show, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci was appointed chief creative officer at Burberry in 2018.
“Riccardo Tisci injected some younger, more contemporary energy into the aesthetic, which was a roaring success,” Holder says.
“Influenced by streetwear, his collections attracted younger fans who appreciated his edgier styles, despite critics pointing out a lack of continuity with the brand’s more traditional heritage.”
Tisci enlisted model friends such as Kendall Jenner and Irina Shayk to walk the runway and dressed stars including Nicki Minaj and Kate Moss for the Met Gala.
He also reintroduced nova check, much to the delight of celebrities and a new generation of Burberry fans.
Bradford-born Daniel Lee took over from Tisci and made his debut at London Fashion Week in February 2023.
The autumn/winter collection – which didn’t feature any beige trench coats – teamed sweeping coats and chunky knitwear with irreverent accessories like a woolly hat shaped like a duck and hot water bottles carried like clutch bags.

For the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey earlier this year, Kate stepped out in one of her go-to labels: Erdem. Helmed by designer Erdem Moralioglu, the brand is known for its romantic and floral aesthetic. For the service, Kate chose a navy ensemble featuring an all-over white flower print, made up of a peplum blazer with delicate chain detailing on the bodice, and a midi-length skirt. It was a well-chosen look, drawing upon a Commonwealth designer for the event – Moralioglu is originally from Canada.
ROKSANDA
As a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Kate is a familiar face at Wimbledon – and in 2022 she attended the iconic event in a sunny yellow dress. The outfit, which had capped sleeves and bow detailing at the shoulder, was from Roksanda – a label known for its vibrant use of colour, helmed by Serbian designer Roksanda Ilincic.
BURBERRY
Heritage brand Burberry is one of the most highly-anticipated shows on the London Fashion Week schedule, and Kate is obviously partial to its designs – she has even been spotted in one of the label’s iconic beige trench coats. She brought a bit of
Britain to Canada on a 2011 trip, dressing down in an olive Burberry shirt during a visit to Blachford Lake near Yellowknife.
STEPHEN JONES
Stephen Jones is often seen as the go-to milliner for the royals –his hats have been worn by the Duchess of Sussex, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as Kate herself. One of Kate’s more experimental fashion moments in a Stephen Jones creation came at the 2011 Epsom Derby, when she wore a beret-style brown straw hat with a bow detailing.
TEMPERLEY LONDON
Many of Kate’s royal engagements require her to wear an evening gown, and she’ll often choose LFW stalwart Temperley London for the occasion. At the National Portrait Gala in 2017, she wore one of creative director Alice Temperley’s designs – a floor-length forest green lace gown with long sleeves and a high neck.
EMILIA WICKSTEAD
Emilia Wickstead is another LFW designer who often features in the Princess of Wales’ wardrobe. Wickstead’s designs are very much in Kate’s wheelhouse: classic and demure cuts, usually in interesting colours or with a quirky twist. Kate wore a lemon midi dress with long sleeves to the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, with the elegant dress given an added bit of interest thanks to twisted detailing at the waist.

Focus On: Skin Lesions
A skin lesion is an abnormal area of skin which differs in appearance to surrounding skin, including moles, cysts, lipomas, birthmarks, blemishes, sun or age-related skin changes and skin tags.
Surgery is sometimes necessary for moles that have changed in appearance, lumps, bumps, and skin cancers. Freeze treatment with cryotherapy is also a useful treatment for benign skin lesions that do not require surgery
Who is it for?
Skin lesions can present in any skin type of any age from babies right through to the elderly. Chris can treat patients of all ages.
Why have surgery?
In some cases it is medically advised in order to provide a diagnosis, for example when a suspicious looking mole has changed. In other cases, skin lesions may catch on clothing, cause pain or make patients self-conscious; especially if a lesion is on a visible part of the face or body. Treatments are aimed at improving quality of life.
What are the types of treatment?
Surgery for skin lesions are typically performed under local anaesthetic in the outpatient department. Options are dependant on the specific issue and the necessary trade-off with scarring. They include cryotherapy, shave removal, or complete surgical excision. Scars can occasionally be treated with steroid injections.

SEE KYLIE MINOGUE, RACHEL WEISZ AND JODIE COMER DON TRENCH COATS FOR BURBERRY SHOW
THE HERITAGE BRAND SHOWED ITS SPRING/ SUMMER COLLECTION TO A STARSTUDDED FRONT ROW. BY PRUDENCE WADE.
Kylie Minogue, Rachel Weisz and Jodie Comer joined stars from the worlds of music, film, fashion and sport to watch Burberry’s London Fashion Week show.
This was Bradford-born Daniel Lee’s second outing at London Fashion Week as creative director of the brand, having taken over from Riccardo Tisci in September 2022.
After choosing Kennington Park as the location for his first show, Lee settled on another green space for this season, setting up a large tent with a green checked print on top in Highbury Fields, north London.
Padam Padam singer Minogue, who performed at London Fashion Week’s opening party, wore a leather-look green coat to watch the show, paired with the unusual colour combination of purple shoes.
Green was a common theme among attendees.
Rachel Weisz, who recently starred in TV series Dead Ringers, also wore a green trench coat, but in a matte material and with a more voluminous silhouette, and wide-legged patterned trousers underneath.
Retired long-distance runner Sir Mo Farah opted for a pared-back look that was unmistakably Burberry – a trench coat with the brand’s nova check lining, and the same print emblazoned on his shoes.
Killing Eve star Jodie Comer channelled transitional dressing for the occasion, wearing a strapless checked knee-length dress, paired with black riding boots.
Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and actor husband Jason Statham were also in attendance – HuntingtonWhiteley in a classic Burberry trench and oversized sunglasses, while Statham wore a black jacket with an olive jumper underneath and matching eyewear.
Naomi Ackie, who portrayed Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, wore an autumnal outfit of wide-legged green and white checked trousers and diamond-patterned top.
Also picking up on the green and white theme was American actress Gabrielle Union, who wore a tartan coat with a slicked-back hairstyle.
Other attendees included Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka, Blur singer Damon Albarn, The Banshees Of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan and model Jourdan Dunn, all keen to see Lee unveil his spring/summer 2024 collection.
The outfits on the runway were a much more classic
take on the Burberry aesthetic. Lee’s first season received mixed reviews, with some saying Lee strayed from the brand’s DNA and introduced too many quirky elements, such as woollen hats that looked like ducks and hot water bottles used as bags. For this show, Lee put the focus on Burberry’s signature product, the trench coat. Alongside more traditional cuts, he reimagined the style in multiple ways –with sleeveless versions, cropped styles and a bomber-trench hybrid.
Lee is making bright blue Burberry’s hallmark colour under his tenure, dubbing it Knight Blue in a nod to the knight on the brand’s logo. There were flashes of blue throughout the collection, from collars to check patterns.
The runway was as starstudded as the front row, with some of the biggest names in British fashion on the catwalk. Adwoa Aboah walked in an on-trend set of a patterned shirt and relaxed knee-length shorts, and was joined by models Neelam Gill, Leomie Anderson and Jean Campbell.
Elsewhere on the runway, floral and checked gowns had scooped backs, and an emphasis was put on chic accessories – including oversized belt bags, underarm handbags and glittering clutches.
Lee tapped into the trend for goth glam make-up in the beauty looks, with many of the models sporting dark lipstick.
While it was a more traditional collection than last season, it still felt fresh and modern, and there was a hint of irreverence at the end, when a male model closed the show in low-rise navy trousers, a statement belt with Burberry’s logo as a buckle, and no shirt.
Lee has been building anticipation for the show with various stunts, such as renaming Bond Street tube station Burberry Street, and taking over Norman’s Cafe in Archway – turning it into a Burberry-style greasy spoon, with lots of blue check and even a visit from former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry.
With a star-studded front row giving their seal of approval and a more wearable collection, it looks like Lee has hit his stride at Burberry.

LONDON FASHION WEEK: Jourdan Dunn walks in emotional Richard Quinn show
THE DESIGNER DEDICATED HIS STUNNING SPRING/SUMMER COLLECTION TO HIS LATE FATHER. BY KATIE WRIGHT.
Jourdan Dunn appeared on the runway during an emotional evening for London Fashion Week favourite Richard Quinn. The British supermodel wore a strapless tulle dress with yellow and blue floral embroidery, and a black bow at the waist, part of Quinn’s spring/summer collection.
The designer was in tears when came out to embrace his mother at the end of the show, which was dedicated to his late father.
“In times of great sadness and loss comes a sense of reflection and calm,” read the show notes, which were accompanied by a photo of Patrick Quinn, who died in June.
A handwritten caption printed on the other side said. ‘This one’s for you Dad’.
A performance by five ballet dancers that opened the show – held in a ballroom at the historic Andaz hotel in East London – was billed as a celebration of “a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and husband”.
Quinn – who famously won the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, presented by her late Majesty, in 2018 – has become known for his floral prints and almost couture-level of craftsmanship.
The SS24 collection focused heavily on the latter, with a slew of stunning eveningwear ensembles.
The first look was a ballerina-esque white full-skirted dress with sparkling embroidery, which was followed by a series of black and white outfits.
Standout pieces included mesh dresses with embroidered boned skirts that looked like birdcages, and a lipstick red ruffled cape gown (one of the few brightly-coloured looks).
Some column dresses were so heavily encrusted with sequins and beads, you could hear them rustle as models glided by, while other voluminous gowns appeared light as air.
The contemplative mood was
continued with the design of models’ make-up.
“Slightly somber, slightly fragile, like a really beautiful Victorian portrait,” is how MAC make-up artist Terry Barber described the look.
“It’s a shadowy grey eye, and I’m using a little metallic gold powder to do this very fine thread of liner. It almost looks like they’ve just cried and their eyes are a little bit wet.”
Model ‘twins’ on the catwalk has become a signature of Quinn’s.
This season, the chosen pair wore blue and white floral satin dresses embellished with white feathers and worn over matching tights, each carrying a large blue and white bouquet, They were followed by Canadian model Jessica Stam closing the show in a flowing white cape with puff sleeves worn over a silver beaded jumpsuit.
After Quinn’s mother rose to greet her son, the audience joined her in giving the designer a standing ovation.

THE CHAPLINS SHELF-HELP GUIDE: 7 styling secrets to boost your bookcase
From the floating to the freestanding, the room dividing to the flush-againstthe-wall, despite their light framework and generally slimline designs, shelving systems and bookcases are hugely impactful pieces of furniture, well worth putting some time and thought into.
Modern homes have become less about pure good looks and more about the art of telling stories and creating personal narratives – now’s the time to gather the objects that mean the most to you and put them where you can feel their positivity every day. New shelves are a great opportunity to browse the house and compose a new collection combining the items you find within.
There are no rules regarding what you put on display. Large, small, old, new, useful, decorative, colourful, muted, hand crafted, machined… bring it all together and start from there.
The first thing to do, whether you’re working with a box-fresh new piece of storage or refreshing something existing, is to start from scratch: empty it. There’s no other way. Once you have a blank slate, then the decisions begin.
What’s the shelf for? Practical storage, or a beautiful, decorative addition to the room? Is it about aesthetics, or expression? What type of atmosphere do you want to create?
Set the mood layer by layer, ledge by ledge with our professional styling methods and strategies to create a contemporary shelving display, and artfully showcase everything from treasured collections and works of art to plants, books and beyond.
Mix materials and textures
Melding different textures and materials on the shelf top, from paper to ceramics, wood, glass and metal, adds a pleasing element of contrast to a space – either place objects on the shelves that juxtapose each other to create interest, or have the whole shelving system differing from
the room itself for larger impact and to make the shelf a standout design feature. Texture – the more tactile the better – also brings a warm and cosy feel, and placing high contrast surfaces side by side (say, a high gloss finish next to a rough ceramic) ups visual appeal and intrigue.
Introduce illumination
Using shelving with built-in lighting, or including a free-standing light on a shelf has many more pros other than simply increasing visibility. Lighting adds depth and dimension, cultivating visual interest while emphasizing the three-dimensional nature of the structure. As well as creating ambiance – warm tones equal cosiness, cool coloured bulbs
110 OCTOBER 2023 HOME & GARDEN
are energetic. Lights can also draw focus to certain pieces so they stand out, and make collections looks even more impressive – and when turned off, built-in lighting becomes invisible while lamps become beautiful sculptures.
Strike a balance
When putting your shelving arrangement together, it’s important to bear balance and proportion in mind – carefully considering the layout and placement of items will make it easier for your collection to harmonise. For a modern, diverse feel, play with scale and emphasize variety (rather than grouping similar styles together), varying the heights, sizes, shapes and materials on each level and across the width of every shelf – aim for casual asymmetry. Generally, larger objects are happiest on the lower section of the shelves, with the lighter and smaller pieces up top – but don’t be afraid to break this rule every now and then for a freer and more contemporary aesthetic.
Master the minimalist mindset
A sparsely populated shelf speaks of curation and confidence, and decorating with a small number of favourite objects turns all the attention to them as refined focal points. While it’s tempting to fill a shelf with beloved items (or unconsciously add to the collection here and there), going for a reduced, minimalist selection lets each piece standout and shine, turning the shelves into a chic, composed selection. Each object has enough space to breathe, and becomes more meaningful and respected by the room afforded to it.
Let creativity flow
When are shelves not shelves? When they’re a mini, in-house, private art gallery. Shelving is the place for creative collections –from paintings, prints and photography to sculptures and beautiful, beguiling objets, shelving offers the opportunity for organised, easy curation and display. An art-filled shelf not only prompts meaningful conversations, but is an outlet for self-expression, the display reflecting your personal style, individuality and making the space truly unique – and bringing a daily dose of delight.
Tell your tale
Shelving is the ideal space to showcase who you are through the objects that narrate your life. As well as visibly sharing your story, personality, interests and experiences with visitors, placing personal mementoes on show has a deeper effect too; being surrounded by memories evokes nostalgia and positive emotions, creating an ambiance that’s emotionally rich, uplifting and positive. Sentimental items are reminders of experiences, people and achievements – keeping them visible preserves those memories, fostering a home environment that feels warm and that you’re strongly connected to.
Edit, edit, edit
We all get a little bored with our decor, and shelving’s inherent flexibility means that it’s as easy as lifting-up and placing-down to refresh a wall and the atmosphere of the whole room. Objects can be rotated, swapped out or updated in an instant. Taste changed? New season? Things getting cluttered? It’s no problem on the shelf, the controlled spacing so naturally lending itself to neatness and organisation. Having an ever-evolving collection on show keeps the display dynamic unexpected and endlessly appealing, keeps the space fresh and aligns the area with who you are and how you want to express yourself. chaplins.co.uk

AW23 PAINT TRENDS
Dark hues are set to have their moment in the spotlight, according to eco paint brand Victory Colours.
Sumptuous burgundies, forest greens, brooding blues and moody purples are going to reign as the weather cools and winter sets in.
Victoria Yardley, Victory Colours’ Managing Director, said: “We are starting to see a lot of interest in rich, deeper shades as homeowners look to warm up their homes for winter.
“These shades also fit beautifully with the rising cosy maximalism trend, which
has seen homeowners embrace louder, bolder hues to serve as a backdrop to their carefully curated interior spaces. They are the perfect shades to fit into interior schemes that have been styled with passion.”
However, there is one shade that Victoria believes will continue to prove popular as the temperatures plummet, even though it does somewhat fall out of the realms of the deeper shades that look set to dominate.
Victoria said: “Love it or hate it, shades that fall under the ‘Barbie Pink’ umbrella are still in demand!”

Wallsauce’s Predictions on the Wallpapers for the Next ten Years!
Creators of custom wallpaper murals, Wallsauce turns 10 years old, and in celebration, it predicts the top 5 murals for the next 10 years.
Based in the wallpaper capital, Lancashire, Wallsauce has successfully been trading as a custom-made wallpaper mural company for the last decade. What started as a three-man setup has turned into a boutique in-house team of ten specialists and, more recently, has even started manufacturing its own wallpaper on-site.
Over the last ten years, Wallsauce has seen a demand for its trusty woodland and map designs along with its more recent additions, including the exclusive Garden Sage design and showstopping Underwater Dream octopus mural.
With future interior trends in mind, Wallsauce predicts the top five wallpaper murals that will adorn walls worldwide for the next decade.
Jungle Paradise
If the last ten years have taught Wallsauce anything, it’s that people like to bring the outdoors in. Although it predicts tree designs will be popular, instead of forest murals being at the top of the leaderboard, jungle murals will have their moment. In particular, the Jungle Paradise mural will become even more popular! Its mellow colour palette offers a stylish design that homeowners can easily style.
Light Teal Green Marble
What was thought to have been a trend is now a must-have design! Watercolour wallpapers are more popular than ever. Available in a rainbow of delicate colours, these designs are super stylish. What’s particularly great about these designs, especially the Light Teal Green Marble design, is that their fluid designs mean you can also dress them with prints without losing crucial details of the mural.
Underwater Dream VI
This unique wallpaper mural made it to Wallsauce’s top 10 in a decade. It’s not going to slow down! As seen in customer hallways to bathrooms, this characterful design makes an epic statement on any wall. For those looking for a bold design in the next decade, this is your guy!
White Marble
Who doesn’t love that bit of luxury at a bargain price? Wallsauce predicts we will still be happy to fake it until we make it with faux-texture murals. This White Marble design is particularly a classic with its beautiful blend of blues and whites with a hint of golden tones.
Classic World Map
As it says in its name, it’s a real classic! World map murals have been with Wallsauce since almost day one. But there’s something about these designs that just aren’t outdated. Whether you’re a keen traveller who loves to plan trips away or those looking for a fancy video meeting backdrop, this Classic World Map design must be the most versatile mural of all time! wallsauce.com
