The first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charts the evolution of her iconic design style and the establishment of the House of CHANEL - from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971.

The Berkeley Rooftop Bar is open for evenings, offering the ultimate alfresco destination for Londoners to soak up sweeping sunset views over Hyde Park, whilst sitting by the glistening pool. Unrivalled views of London’s skyline will be complemented with a menu of refreshing spritz’ and Mediterranean small plates.

Guests are whisked up to the rooftop by lift, discovering a sun-bathed mural by artist Chiara Perano along the way, inspired by the blues of the pool and greens of the park. Once outside, staggering views of the red brick of Knightsbridge, the charming crescents of Belgravia and the vast scale of Hyde Park greet you. Guests can book a table or nab a striped lounger – drink in hand – which is for walk-ins only.

Rosé is served by the magnum tableside, harking to summer

holidays in the South of France, and a hero sangria is mixed with Côte de Provence rosé and Fever-Tree raspberry lemonade, fresh grapefruit juice and seasonal fruit. The cocktail list is a collection of highballs and Summer spritz’ – the ‘Pool Party’ is a blend of Campari, Chambord, rhubarb, strawberry bitters and Fever-Tree soda water; whilst ‘Hyde Park Spritz’ is a revitalising mix of Ricard Pastis, Cointreau, Benedictine, lemon and sparkling water.

Classics including gin and tonics, craft beers and wines are served alongside an informal, seasonal menu of Mediterranean small plates – ideal for sharing. Highlights include seared beef with truffle artichoke pesto and rocket; marinated squid with courgette spaghetti, daikon, sesame, and ginger dressing; a watermelon, cherry tomato and feta salad topped with mint dressing, and a classic Panzanella.

Chelsea History Festival 2023

From 26 September – 1 October 2023

Returning for the fifth year, the National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Chelsea Physic Garden join forces to offer an exciting line-up of events in historic Chelsea - a neighbourhood with hidden gems to discover, from military history to bohemian rock stars, as well as designers and artists, showcasing British and global stories to intrigue and inspire.

2023 HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

Explore Chelsea: The Festival will offer talks, tours and open days sharing the captivating and often unheard stories of the local neighbourhood – delving into the historical foundations of the area’s most eminent institutions, alongside anecdotes and tales of local heroes.

On Sunday 1 October, former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman will share his unique perspective on Chelsea’s development from village to global centre for music, fashion, art and culture during the 1960s and 1970s. His reflections from years of living and working in the area will enable visitors to discover this iconic neighbourhood anew.

On Thursday 28 and Friday 29 September, The Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the iconic British Army veterans, will open for public tours led by the Chelsea Pensioners. Visitors will experience the Royal Hospital through the eyes of its own residents and learn stories from the dawn of the Hospital’s founding during the Restoration through to the Napoleonic Wars into the two World Wars. 2023 also commemorates 300 years of Sir Christopher Wren’s works with a concert in the Royal Hospital Chapel on Thursday 28 September.

On Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October, the Festival will celebrate the 350-year anniversary of the Chelsea Physic Garden with a free open weekend. Visitors can explore their recently reopened Glasshouses, and home to 1,200 different plant species.

New Perspectives

The Festival’s programme will reveal fresh takes on familiar and unexplored historical events, highlighting the lives of past individuals, both celebrated and overlooked. On Friday 29 September, renowned travel expert Michael Palin will share the life and tragic death of his great-uncle Harry, a veteran of the First

World War. His extraordinary life was unknown until Michael began researching his family history.

Family fun

Returning is History Street, an interactive outdoor experience taking visitors into London’s past through to the present day. Expert living historians, alongside service military units and local cultural organisations, will come together to bring the history of London back to life.

Americana London

THE FLAVOUR OF THE DEEP SOUTH COMES TO THE WEST END

The capital’s nightlife has been boosted by a new independent late-licence restaurant and bar in the heart of theatreland. Americana is the latest venture by veteran London club and bar supremo Stephen Less, who has launched almost 50 bars, clubs and restaurants over a 50-year career.

The stylish restaurant specializes in high quality delicious cuisine from the deep south of the US, and has received rave reviews since opening four months ago. “Prime locations on The Haymarket do not come up that often,” says Stephen. “It’s what the area needed, because we have a late licence for food and drink, it is great for theatre-goers, actors and staff who often finish work and have nowhere to relax or socialise.”

Stephen applied his entertainment know-how to design Americana, which is close to The Theatre Royal Haymarket and His Majesty’s Theatre, home of the long-running Phantom of the Opera.

“It was ridiculous that the area didn’t have an exciting restaurant with a late licence for people coming out of theatres – they don’t want to rush into a place and only have 30 minutes before it closes,” adds Stephen. “We didn’t want another burger place or Italian restaurant and we thought the southern States cuisine angle was new and exciting. The Restaurant, Bar and Gallery Dining is also available for events, looks amazing and because we are established operators, we were able to get a late licence to serve food and drink until 3am. “

“The industry has been hit by the pandemic and the cost of living, so you have to be a cut above everything else to attract customers. Our reviews have been phenomenal, meaning a great boost to those who have worked tirelessly to make Americana so brilliant.”

The six-month fit out includes a mezzanine floor with gallery dining for private events for up to 40 people, along with stylish dining and bar areas with innovative menus. “It is a massive commitment to open a new restaurant in the current climate but the capital and theatreland needs Americana,” says Stephen, who also co-founded The Directors’ Lounge, in Euston.

“We also want Americana to be a place for actors and theatre staff too. There are more than 1,000

working in the West End and they deserve somewhere good to go. We have spoken to those involved in Phantom and they said the area was crying out for something like this.”

Stephen adds: “It is a big challenge, but I love London, its leisure industry and I’m a creative person so I always have ideas. I’ve been in the business successfully for many years, so I have a good idea of what works but you must back that up with a lot of planning and hard work. I wake up every day to business challenges and headaches but I’m a problem solver and I still get a buzz from creating something and perfecting it.”

Stephen shows little sign of slowing down despite now being in his seventies, and he also has interests in property and IT recruitment in the City of London and New York. But nightlife remains an enduring business passion that was ignited when he opened his first club in the late 1970s.

“I’ve still got energy and enthusiasm for the industry and I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved at Americana and what it is contributing to London’s nightlife,” Stephen adds. “I’ve got very loyal staff and we are like a family and that makes it easier and more rewarding as we can all share in the success.”

“Americana is continuing to grow and will become a London landmark. But I’m still not finished; I’ve still got ideas and plans so watch this space.”

Reveals programme for London Design Festival 2023. From 16 - 24 September 2023

London’s first design district will exhibitions, talks and events showcasing the work of established and emerging designers as well as celebrating leading designers and brands from the UK and Europe.

For London Design Festival 2023, the theme for Brompton Design District is ConvivialityThe Art of Living Together, celebrating design’s ability to connect us with the people and places around us, exploring how designers can create conviviality and help us to live collaboratively.

Stretching from the V&A to Brompton Road, Brompton is a destination for design; a cluster of global design brands sit within an ecosystem of fashion shops, local cafes, established restaurants and one of the world’s most important cultural quarters. This year the District’s hub returns to Cromwell Place. The arts venue will host four exhibitions from the curated programme as well as other London Design Festival events.

Internationally renowned design brands based in the District will share their latest collections.

Brompton Design District has commissioned award-winning collective ‘All in Awe’ to develop an installation in the heart of the district at Egerton Gardens in response to Brompton’s theme.

‘All Together’ is designed with a collaborative spirit to tackle the subject of loneliness as a universal human experience and is made in support of the work of local charities Mind Kensington, the Kensington & Chelsea Volunteer Centre and the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation.

At Japan House Brompton Design District visitors are invited to discover the vibrancy and variety of Japanese graphic arts at the exhibition: WAVE: Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts.

Curated by artists Hiro Sugiyama and Takahashi Kintarō, the exhibition presents the work of 60 of Japan’s most significant graphic artists today, introducing many of them to the UK for the first time. Japan House will also host two installations and a booth celebrating the work of sound designer Yuri Suzuki. A highlight of the booth is Suzuki’s ‘Ambient Machine’, which allows visitors to design their own background ambience through the individual selection of thirty-two switches that control a variety of sounds and music.

There is also an adjacent terrace area for up to 14, and the striking Mauve private dining room for up to a dozen guests.

Where Bloomsbury meets King’s Cross, The Megaro Hotel has a strong food and drink personality – with Magenta, a fine dining Italian restaurant, Hokus Pokus, the imaginative and fun ‘apothecary bar’. Magenta is a striking restaurant for many reasons – but especially for its contemporary northern Italian cuisine from Executive Chef Manuele Bazzoni, and its bold interior from noted designer Henry Chebaane.

Magenta is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday-Saturday, menu options include an à la carte and a six-course tasting menu, as well as a great value set lunch menu (£35 for three courses). Highlights of the seasonal à la carte menu include Antipasti such as Tuna carpaccio with Amalfi lemon; and Crispy sweetbreads with borlotti beans and girolles; followed by Primi including Ricotta and Parmesan agnolotti with broad beans; or Seafood risotto (for two); and Secondi course options such as Skate cooked in langoustine butter with langoustine tartare and sea vegetables; and BBQ Lamb rack and belly with Isle of Wight tomatoes, courgette and smoked goat’s cheese. Desserts feature Coconut mousse, yellow peach salsa and blood peach sorbet; and Apricot soufflé with Amaretto biscuit ice cream.

The wine list is predominantly Italian with nods to select other regions, and features some real gems, with 30 options by the glass. There is also a range of deliciously creative Signature Cocktails with Italian influences.

The modernist interior is dramatic and colourful with magenta

Hokus Pokus is an ‘underground apothecary bar’ with a hugely inventive repertoire of craft cocktails and botanical concoctions. It is led by the dynamic mixologist Greg Chudzio and offers drinkers a bit of imaginative alchemy and escapism! The bar’s name and design were inspired by the many 19th century quack doctors who embraced chemical and technological discoveries to produce ‘miracle cures’. While Hokus Pokus does not go to these extremes, it definitely has a playful approach to mixology, featuring many options that are distilled, infused, pickled or smoked – some with added theatrical flame!

Greg Chudzio and his team pay great personal attention to the guest’s mood and personality, as well as their drinking preferences – the objective is to enhance the overall immersive experience, to experiment and have fun. Hokus Pokus is not just for a basic G&T or glass of beer! The drinks repertoire features a series of evocative sections – Throughout the Seasons, Tea Potions, Sippers, Flamed Potions, and Smokey Potions –as well as Recipes from the Past and Tempered Prescriptions.

The Hokus Pokus interior is a mix of retro and futuristic influences, with theatrical lighting and apothecary furnishings create an audacious and ‘fantastic’ ambience, with Greg and his team maximising the underground mood and secret drinking den vibe.

Additionally, Spagnoletti is an all-day pasta lab/café situated adjacent to the hotel. Its casual pasta and grill-led menu is an ideal pit-stop, and it is also open for breakfast with superb Italian pastries and coffee.

Totally Thames is returning to celebrate the capital’s river with a month of exciting events. There will be five festival hubs; Brentford; Royal Docks; London Bridge and Southbank; Greenwich; and Kingston upon Thames.

The incredible annual festival highlights the importance of the river Thames, how it impacts the population, and the importance of protecting it and the nature and communities around it. This year’s programme will include photography exhibitions, art installations, dance, concerts, talks and tours.

Weekend One will see the Creative Mile in Brentford, with events celebrating the artists and creativity flowing through the heart of Brentford. At the listed estate Syon House, Once Up On a Cube by Scirocco Dance Theatre, is a playful, sitespecific performance promoting green architecture and reclaiming our public spaces.

Weekend Two is at the Royal Docks with an exciting installation by artist David Cotterrell. He will create a new geyser, shooting 500 litres of water 30 metres into the air daily, which will be seen from the IFS Cloud Cable Car, streets and nearby buildings.

Weekend Three will hold numerous events in London Bridge and Southbank - including Tied 3, exploring connections between women and their environment where six women in timeless clothing will construct a fishing net that gradually widens outward. At the Old Operating Theatre in London Bridge, audiences can discover Tidal Traces - an exhibition of video works, cyanography, micrography and chromatography by Irma Isara. It will explore environmental

issues through the material that finds its way into the river.

Weekend Four will be at the Greenwich hub, exploring the history of the Thames and one of its historic activities – mudlarking. Their Mudlarking and Art exhibition is an interactive exhibit of visual and performance art that re-identifies this historic area,. There will be creative workshops, interactive walks and artist talks throughout the weekend.

Weekend Five will be in Kingston upon Thames with Creative Flow: Kingston, Art and the River delving into the borough’s centuries-long association with creativity and the river. The area has been an abundant source of creative inspiration for artists and authors from the 17th century through to present day.

These events and many more will bring each of the festival hubs to life along the river, with more events and activities to be announced.

“What a find! Retreat East can be found in Hemingstone, just outside Ipswich in Suffolk. Tucked away down Sandy Lane, this stunning thirty-fiveacre site is a wonderful hidden gem.

This tranquil place does not fail to blow you away, so picturesque and beautiful it did not disappoint. Stunning barns situated amongst picture postcard fields. We instantly felt the stress of the dismal start to the summer melt away and this was the place for some well-earned rest.

As you enter, there is parking with electric recharging points. This is ideal as it keeps all cars from the main area.

We were greeted in the reception area by Karin, who gave us the tour of the facilities and The Great Barn, a beautiful building with high vaulted ceilings, inglenook fireplace with a seated dining area to relax for an evening meal.

We had arrived early, so this gave us the opportunity to use the cardio equipment and free weights in the gym facility, which was followed by a well-deserved bottle of chilled Prosecco, to take to lounge on the sunbeds in the courtyard bar area.

Then the spa beckoned, this truly amazing experience refreshed us with delightful, scented steam and sauna rooms, rainforest showers and a truly exhilarating experience plunging in the icecold water pool. The private outdoor jacuzzi was much needed following this.

We headed to our accommodation, The Piggery, situated just behind the reception area, which did not fail to please, with its outstanding spaciousness, furnished to the

highest standard and fine detailed décor, included two amazing bathrooms, with pebbled floors and a freestanding bath.

With two generous sized wardrobes, welcomed us, containing cosy robes and slippers for us to lounge in.

The woodburning stove would give further comfort for those chillier months and the use of a well-equipped kitchen for the option when you may prefer to dine at home, was a thoughtful added touch to any stay.

Once acquainted with our surroundings, we were able to take full advantage of a relaxing afternoon in our spacious private courtyard, before heading back to The Great Barn for our evening meal.

The food did not disappoint and there are options for all dietary needs, including vegetarian and vegan delights. We opted for the most incredible Sunday roast, which did not disappoint in taste and quantity. The Great Barn provided a grand selection of quality wines from the list, and we made sure to indulge with a bottle or perhaps two from the menu.

We were ready to ‘hit the hay’ after a very overindulgent day, although very well deserved! The beds were like sleeping on cotton and the place is so tranquil, nothing disturbed us.

The next morning, my booking was for a sixty-minute full body melt massage. I can say, this was one of the best massages I have experienced. The therapist used a combination of hand massage with stones. A truly wonderful experience and this is from someone who has a massage wherever I go! Thank you again for such a great experience.

Our stay was coming to an end at Retreat East and this was finalised with a full Continental breakfast in The Great Barn.

The first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charts the evolution of her iconic design style and the establishment of the House of CHANEL - from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971.

Featuring over 200 looks seen together for the first time, as well as accessories, perfumes and jewellery, the exhibition will explore Chanel’s pioneering approach to fashion design, which paved the way for a new elegance and continues to influence the way women dress today.

Highlights will include one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments from 1916; original costumes designed by Chanel for the Ballets Russes production of Le Train Bleu in 1924; outfits created for Hollywood stars Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich; an early example of Chanel’s groundbreaking evening trousers and ensembles from Chanel’s final collection of 1971.

Chanel designed first and foremost for herself. By creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman. The exhibition will explore Chanel’s

innovative approach to fabric, silhouette and construction, and will examine how she drafted a new framework for fashion in the twentieth century. Showcasing a stunning array of some of Chanel’s most notable designs from her sixty years in fashion, the exhibition analyses her professional career, the emergence and the development of her style, and her contribution to the history of fashion.

Through ten themed sections, Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto will showcase the exquisite skill and innovation from the founder of the House of CHANEL: Towards A New Elegance offers an introduction to the beginning of Gabrielle Chanel’s career as a milliner, opening her first boutique in Paris in 1910. This section outlines how the success of this

business enabled her expansion into clothing and will feature one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments, characterised by minimalism and precision – laying the foundations of her design principles.

The Emergence of a Style focuses on how Chanel developed an immediately identifiable signature style in the 1920s and 1930s. With clean lines, fluid materials and a simplistic colour palette, her understated designs were radical in their practicality yet displayed a refined elegance. This section also includes Chanel’s British influences and business ventures, and her creations worn on the theatre stage and silver screen.

The Invisible Accessory showcases the creation and impact of Gabrielle Chanel’s debut perfume No.5 which became the world’s best-selling fragrance. Chanel made No.5 the signature of her fashion house. This section will also explore the launch of Chanel’s range of make-up in 1924 and skincare in 1927.

Luxury and Line focuses on how Chanel’s eveningwear demonstrated a refined mix of inventiveness and classicism which subtly accentuated the female form- harmonising proportions and materials to create garments which expressed elegance, freedom and simplicity. This section will also look at “Bijoux de Diamants”, her first and only 1932 collection of fine jewellery commissioned by the International Diamond Corporation of London.

Closing the House will outline the impact of the outbreak of war in 1939 on her personal and professional life. The exhibition will continue with Chanel’s official Return to Fashion on 5 February

1954, featuring the signature hallmarks that she had so successfully introduced during the 1920s and 1930s.

The Suit will spotlight the defining garment of Gabrielle Chanel’s post-war contribution to fashion, with over fifty ensembles on display. A declaration of her vision of modern femininity, the Chanel suit combined ease and comfort with simplicity and style. Described by Vogue in 1964 as “the world’s prettiest uniform,” the Chanel suit, which has since become a timeless classic, remains a staple reference for fashion today.

Chanel Codes will focus on how accessories were fundamental to Chanel’s conception of a harmonious silhouette. They reflected her pragmatic vision of fashion and provided recognisable codes which underlined the unity of her style. Since the 1950s, the Chanel 2.55 handbag and two-tone slingback shoes have become two of the most enduring accessories in the world of fashion.

Into the Evening showcases eveningwear as an important part of Chanel’s couture collections in the latter part of her career. From the late 1950s onwards, she adapted her suits to include a range to be worn into the evening. These cocktail suits followed the same form as her day suits, realised in a plethora of richly decorative fabrics such as gold and silver lamés, textured weaves and intricately patterned silks.

A Chanel Hallmark will explore this essential part of Gabrielle Chanel’s distinct style. Rejecting the conventions of fine jewels, Chanel gave costume jewellery a new status. From the early 1920s, Chanel’s boutiques offered a dazzling range of costume jewellery to wear with her sleek fashionable garments.

Timeless Allure – the exhibition finale – celebrates the evening dress as Chanel’s exercise in style. She proposed a relaxed version of the formal dress that was both discreet and refined. This section will showcase that right up until her final collection of Spring-Summer 1971.

RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS for London’s most progressive school –St Dunstan’s College celebrates academic success

This summer, St Dunstan’s College, south London, was delighted to celebrate record-breaking A Level and GCSE results for the school, outside of the pandemic.

This year, 86% of all A Level grades achieved were A*B, 56% were A* - A and 22% were A*.

Reflecting on the Sixth Formers achievements, St Dunstan’s Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘These are exceptional results for our students, and the school’s best ever on record when compared with previous comparable public examinations for the College. This is a tremendous achievement, especially as these are the first set of public examinations this cohort have taken.

‘This year group have maintained their focus throughout their Sixth Form studies, working closely with our exceptional A Level teachers, and I am delighted to see their efforts rewarded with these record-breaking outcomes.’

Sixth Form students will now be departing St Dunstan’s for a variety of destinations. This includes the University of Oxford, Russell Group universities, prestigious dance and music conservatories and top art schools.

Meanwhile, Year 11

students also achieved fantastic results for the school. 86% of all grades were 9-6, with 67% of grades being 9-7, the former A*/ A grade. 45% of all grades were also grade 9-8, equivalent to A*.

The record-breaking results come at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s College. Approximately one-third of women suffer from Diastasis recti - the persistent separation of abdominal muscles following pregnancy. The surprise hit ofthe season, colourful crochet is everywhere right now.

What started on the spring/summer 2023 catwalks as more of a laidback, seaside-inspired look – with cream, custard and khaki beach dresses at Gabriela Hearst, Khaite and Ulla Johnson – has bloomed into a rainbowriot on the high street.

The fabric – which is created by using a weave loops of yarn – has fallen in and out of throughout the decades.

The hippy heyday of the Seventies saw a massive boom in crochet clothing, in particular garments made from a patchwork of ‘granny squares’.

More recently, London Fashion Week designer Christopher Kane (known for his love of ‘granny chic’) put black and blue crochet on the catwalk, styled with leather and latex.

Singer Harry Styles – known for his love of Seventies styles – has inspired fans to weave their own crochet cardigans after he was spotted on stage in a patchwork design.

According to Klarna Shopping Index research, shoppers are embracing the retro look in a big way, with sales of crochet items up 81% year on year.

The most popular garments are trousers (up 269%), shirts (193%) and skirts (140%).

So how should you wear the trend now? This year’s revival is all about fun in the sun.

A mesh dress or cover-up is a beachwear must-have if you’re jetting off somewhere hot on holiday.

THE FERTILITY CENTRE

Formerly the Assisted Conception Unit, The Fertility Centre is a longstanding centre of excellence for fertility treatment and care at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In 2021 they enlarged the Centre with a new satellite service at West Middlesex University Hospital, extending patient care and convenient access across West London.

The Centre provides a broad and comprehensive range of fertility services to their patients – including IVF, ICSI and IUI – but their areas of particular expertise, include the management of women and couples over the age of 40, premature ovarian ageing or low ovarian reserve, and male or sperm-related infertility issues.
