It has been an exceptionally successful season for Bromley High’s multitudinous hockey and netball teams and the U12 and U13 squads celebrated with end of term tours to Holland and France.

he girls of Bromley High School had an unexpected encounter at the airport as they set off on their tour of Iceland. The genial sprint superstar Usain Bolt was happy to take time to chat and pose for selfies with the 48 GCSE and A level Geographers who were beginning the Easter holidays with a study tour of the dramatic Icelandic landscape which encompassed swimming in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon and encountering geysers, glaciers and waterfalls. Girls from Years 6, 7 and 8 have been been touring slightly closer to home over the past month. The Year 6 and 7 choir and orchestra enjoyed a very successful Music Tour of Normandy, singing in such beautiful venues as Bayeux Cathedral and finding plenty of time for practising their French in the local markets. The highlight of their repertoire was an acapella rendition of ‘Siyahamba’ (the Zulu version of ‘We are walking in the light of God’ which an anthem of the apartheid movement in South Africa) which they had sung to great acclaim at the Finals of the Girls’ Day School Trust Junior Choir Competition at The Cadogan Hall in March. It has been an exceptionally successful season for Bromley High’s multitudinous hockey and netball teams and the U12 and U13 squads celebrated with end of term tours to Holland and France. The hockey players fitted in an unfeasibly varied programme of sightseeing alongside a demanding schedule of matches against some of Holland’s most formidable young teams and some specialist training sessions where they picked up some new Dutch tips and techniques. Over Easter, 40 netballers are playing in a huge tournament at Disneyland Paris where they hope to have plenty of time to try out all the most adventurous rides as well as giving their all to the netball competition.

At Mayfield we believe the creative and performing arts have an extremely positive impact on physical and mental well-being, inspiring pupils and allowing them to use their imaginations while they take a break from their academic pursuits. Whether a student intends to pursue music, drama, textiles, ceramics or art as a career, or whether it is just for fun and relaxation, it is vital these subjects are available to students at secondary level, and that they are encouraged to take part. Who knows where it may lead them? The more a curriculum is restricted, the more stifled creativity becomes and we risk depriving children of essential life skills, and of narrowing their horizons. The benefits of singing, playing music or performing on stage (no matter how nervewracking it may seem initially) are vast: from boosting self-confidence, to teaching the discipline that is required to learn lines or music. Commitment, attention to detail, critical analysis and patience are required to succeed. These skills are eminently transferrable and cross-curricular links between the arts and those subjects considered more traditionally academic are hugely valuable, not least in providing contextual detail and background information to enrich learning: the bigger picture! A future in which these subjects are not available to pupils is an alarming one, and one that many parents in the state sector are increasingly facing. We want our girls to leave Mayfield with an excellent understanding of the past, not least in how that informs the skills they need to thrive in the future as a proactive member of a modern society. Abstract and creative intellectual curiosity is important, but must be tempered by understanding of and compassion for themselves and others: that is exactly what we are giving them. In our increasingly global existence, this combination of skills couldn’t be more important, but cannot be measured by a written examination, or passively learnt! League tables, funding cuts and everchanging attainment goals have created an educational landscape in which the state sector is being directed to focus on the traditional ‘core’ subjects, to the disadvantage of those children and parents who are looking for a broader educational experience. Everyone should be able to benefit from an education that inspires creativity and critical thinking; that encourages commitment and self-confidence; that helps children learn about and prepare for the world around them. This is the educational experience that is a fundamental way of life to all of us at Mayfield. Antonia Beary is Headmistress at Mayfield School, a leading Catholic independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18. She is also currently Chair of CISC and Hon Sec of GSA. EMBRACING A GROWTH MINDSET Sevenoaks Prep is building upon its strong values by embracing a Growth Mindset approach to personal development.

Y

our mindset is that little voice in your head that directs your thoughts. It is created by all the beliefs you have about life and the people in your life, shaped by the events in your life and how you were taught to interpret them by the people around you. For example, if you failed a maths test in school did you say “I’m not good at maths” or did you say “If I work harder, I can do better”? If you failed to score a goal, did you say to yourself “I can’t play this game” or did you say “I’m going to keep practising until I score”? “Natural talent can only take you so far. It might give a person a head start but in the end, natural talent is rarely enough to keep a person successful over the

long haul. In the long run, work and effort play a more important role in success.” At Sevenoaks Prep, we are conscious of the importance of a Growth Mindset in everything we do. We value the ability to embrace challenges by not being afraid of failure and using any set back to stretch and grow. We want our pupils to believe that their abilities change depending on the effort they put into changing them and that anything is achievable if the effort is put in. Their sense of selfworth should come from the process of growth and learning and not from external sources. Luke Harrison, Headmaster, says “We see great value in empowering our pupils through a Growth Mindset vocabulary, which complements our Way Of Life values and strengthens our ethos. We are proud of the resilience, self-confidence and success of our pupils.”. THE DETAILS Sevenoaks Preparatory School, Godden Green, Sevenoaks, Kent TN15 0JU Tel. 01732 762336 www.theprep.org.uk

he parish priests of St Edmund of Canterbury Church, Beckenham and St Joseph’s Church, Bromley and several other priests from the deanery will concelebrate the Mass with the Archbishop. This visit by the Archbishop of Southwark coincides with the completion of the extensive refurbishment programme in the school chapel begun during the summer of 2015. The day of the blessing is the eve of The Annunciation of the Lord (25th March) and it is also a regular school day so the whole school community was present to participate in a very special, spiritual occasion at the heart of their school. The Mass and blessing was followed by a Reception and Buffet lunch where Archbishop Peter and the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Ian F Payne met pupils and other members of the Bishop Challoner School community and invited guests.

‘I hope and pray that this beautiful chapel will remain a spiritual haven, an inspirational setting in the daily life of the whole school community and a place to spend time quietly with God.’ The Most Reverend Peter Smith. NOT DEAD ENOUGH 2017 UK TOUR

Interview with Laura Whitmore (Cleo Morey) WHAT WAS IT THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO STAR IN THE WORLD PREMIERE PRODUCTION OF PETER JAMES’ NOT DEAD ENOUGH? Laura: I wanted to get back into acting and it was about finding the right team and the right role, something that had a bit of depth to it and which would be a challenge. I met Peter, Ian [Talbot, the director] and Joshua [Andrews, the producer] and I just knew it was a team I wanted to work with. I fell in love with the script and Peter’s books. I’ve read a few of his books and it felt like the right thing to do, plus Cleo is a character who is a bit feisty, a strong woman, and a role I can sink my teeth into. HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUR CHARACTERS IN THE SHOW? Laura: My character wants a commitment from Roy, who is the wrong man to want a commitment from. I think it’s hard for a woman where there’s an ex-wife or a past relationship and there’s so much uncertainty here. When is this woman going to come back? Is she dead? How do you deal with someone that’s ghost but is also real? It’s not the easiest of times. WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THE CHARACTERS? Laura: Cleo is very strong. She’s probably had her own obstacles with the job that she has. She’s a woman who I feel has probably had to tackle her way to get there. I feel she’s got a lot to prove and she’s in love with a guy who is probably not the best guy to be in love with. She’s also quite headstrong and doesn’t like to show vulnerability, which I don’t either. There are a few times in the play where something happens and she doesn’t want him to know because she’d rather deal with it herself. I quite like that. She’s very stubborn and I guess I am too. THE FIRST TWO PETER JAMES STAGE PLAYS HAVE BEEN HUGE HITS. WHY DO YOU THINK AUDIENCES ARE SO ENTHRALLED BY HIS STORIES? Laura: They’re based on reality. Everything Peter does is researched so well and based on some sort of truth.

34 APRIL 2017

Gate, The Gaiety and The Abbey. ANY NERVES? Laura: More butterflies, but if you don’t get butterflies there’s no point doing it. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE TOUR? Laura: The routine and the structure of it and when getting back into acting the best thing you can do is theatre. Also working with a great team and a great director. Being a sponge and trying to absorb as much as I can – there’s no better way to learn.

COMING SOON: TUE 30 MAY – SAT 3 JUNE

WERE YOU FAMILIAR WITH PETER’S WORK BEFORE THIS? Laura: I know his books from airports. I fly so much for work and I’ll go “I must pick up a new book, what’s in the top ten?” and there’s always one of his there - right at the top! YOU TRAINED IN DRAMA SO HOW IS IT REVISITING THE DISCIPLINE AFTER DOING PRESENTING WORK? AND WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU? Laura: It’s been ages since I did theatre, since I won a competition to be an MTV presenter about eight years ago. I did a few local productions in Dublin and it’s something I wanted to get back into. I suppose presenting is acting in a way and doing Strictly Come Dancing I found that I really enjoyed becoming a character for those few minutes of doing a dance. I found the acting part helped me get through the dancing. Growing up I was obsessed with theatre and just that live feel. Even more so than going to the movies, I loved watching live theatre and I was very lucky that that was my little treat from my dad. My parents weren’t together and once a week my dad would take me to a play. It was something I was in awe of at theatres like The

WILL GOING HOME TO DUBLIN BE A SPECIAL STOP ON THE TOUR? Laura: Absolutely and it’s a beautiful theatre. I moved to London eight years ago and I don’t get home often. I’m really excited to have the opportunity to perform this play to a home crowd in Dublin and to be able to have my mum and my dad come and see it will be great. DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE OR POSTSHOW ROUTINES OR SUSPICIONS? Laura: For me pre-show and before doing live TV I just like five minutes of time to myself. There’s so much hustle and bustle, especially with live television, that it’s nice to just disappear for a few minutes. SO YOU CAN ACT AND DANCE – WHAT’S THE ONE SKILL YOU WISH YOU HAD? Laura: I wish I could play an instrument well. I play guitar badly but I wish I was that person who at a party could just pick up a guitar and play any song. PETER’S STORIES ARE VERY SCARY. WHAT ARE YOU SCARED OF IN REAL LIFE? Laura: I’m scared of showing vulnerability in some ways because in this industry you have to be quite strong. There are many possible causes of hearing loss: it may be hereditary or could result from the natural ageing process, exposure to loud or constant noise, illness or complications at birth, toxic medication, ear infection, trauma or injury. Buying a private hearing aid is a major decision, so ensure you consult a hearing aid dispenser who is registered with Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Bevan Allen (FSHAA, RHAD) at the Langley Audiology Centre (LAC) in Eden Park, Beckenham, is a HCPC Registered Hearing Aid Audiologist with over 57 years’ experience in the industry. South East Hearing Care Centres Deaf Awareness Week and Hear Here! 15th - 21st May 2017

S

outh East Hearing Care Centres are holding their free annual Hear Here! event to coincide with Deaf Awareness Week. The UK Council on deafness is calling this week ‘A celebration’ and we are pleased to support and celebrate this worthy cause. It is estimated that up to 10 million people have some degree of hearing loss in this country yet there is still uncertainty around what to do, where to get help and more importantly, what is available to alleviate the symptoms. DEAF AWARENESS WEEK AND HEAR HERE! Our free annual Hear Here! events are held close to our hearing care centres in Kent and Sussex and year on year become larger, busier than ever and more spectacular. This year we will have the usual walk around exhibition from the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers, showcasing the latest technology. Just a couple to pick out from these will be the only extended wear invisible hearing aid called Lyric. This really is a game changer as the instrument is professionally fitted by one of our certified clinics and then left alone for two to three months. There is no daily insertion or removal, no batteries to change and the device itself sits comfortably in the ear canal, just 4mm from the ear drum. The other devices that are a huge help to users with decreased manual dexterity, is the rechargeable range which means no more fiddling around with batteries or forgetting to replenish stocks. We have chosen two very prestigious and well known locations. On Wednesday 17th May

This year we will have the usual walk around exhibition from the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers, show-casing the latest technology. 68 APRIL 2017

we will be at Hall Place in Bexley, renowned for its stunning Tudor architecture and gardens, sitting on the banks of the river Cray. Our second location on Thursday 18th May is in Ripley Arts Centre just a short distance from Bromley town centre. The venue is a charming Victorian house known locally as Ripley. Our Hear Here! roadshows always prove popular and this year is no exception with our guest speaker being the worldrenowned Mezzo Soprano opera singer, Janine Roebuck. Janine is a hearing aid wearer and will be talking about her experience and giving an example of her talented singing voice. Other topics by specialist COMING speakers will SOON: include tinnitus and 15TH - 21ST earwax removal plus a MAY 2017 fascinating talk about a deaf school in Kenya we have supported for over fifteen years. The talks will be repeated throughout the day so if you are planning to spend the day, you will catch all the talks. Refreshments will also be served throughout and there is a free entry to our prize draw with a chance to win a luxury hamper plus a goody bag for all attendees. We strongly recommend you indicate your interest by phoning 020 8460 8954 so we can register you free of charge. These events, once publicised, become full very quickly and with all that is on offer during the day, it would be a shame to miss anything. THE DETAILS

RESTAURANT REVIEW The Manor at Bickley, Bromley

For more local restaurant reviews, recipes and cooking tips visit Regan’s food blog www.whatiatelastnight.com AMBIANCE The Manor at Bickley is set in beautiful grounds, and is currently undergoing a major refurbishment. We visited on a Sunday, when a jazz band were playing in the newly decorated restaurant, and families were taking advantage of the Sunday roast menu presented by their new Chef. SERVICE We were greeted upon entrance to the hotel by a very friendly receptionist, and led to the bar area to enjoy a drink before sitting down for our meal. We were then shown through to the restaurant, where welcoming and helpful waiters and waitresses took great care of us throughout the meal. FOOD The Sunday roast menu offers a choice from four starters, mains and desserts, with vegetarian options included. We started with a Seabass ballotine, house cured gravalax, pickled courgette and carrot. Beautifully presented, full of light and delicate flavours, and the fish literally melted in the mouth. For main, we opted for the roast sirloin of beef – perfectly cooked beef, served with roasted chateaux potatoes and pan gravy, seasonal vegetables

and a Yorkshire pudding. For dessert we were torn between the chocolate fondant and the black treacle and ginger hot pudding with salted caramel and an extra scoop of vanilla ice cream – the hot pudding won, topped with one of the nicest caramel sauces I have ever tasted. DRINK The hotel offers a well stocked bar, with a wide selection of gins available, along with a good selection of wines on the restaurant menu. We opted for wines by the glass to accompany our roast beef – the Primitivo ‘Il Pumo’ proved a perfect match. MY OVERVIEW Sunday lunch with live music set within the Manor and views of the gardens. RESTAURANT REVIEW Aqua Bar & Grill, Petts Wood This month, Food Editor Regan Anderton visited Aqua Bar & Grill in Petts Wood to give you her verdict on their menu. A beautifully cooked and meaty piece of cod, served with courgette fries, which gave a nod towards a traditional fish and chip dinner but without the heavy carbs from standard chips, chorizo crisp which added a lovely smoky depth to the dish, and sauce vierge. For dessert, a rich and indulgent Baileys crème brûlée topped off a lovely meal.

AMBIANCE Since acquiring the Estate office location, Aqua Bar & Grill has turned what once was a small local restaurant, in to an amazingly bright and open space with an outdoor dining area that wouldn’t look out of place on the Amalfi coast. We visited on a Thursday, and the restaurant was busy and buzzing with people drinking cocktails at the bar or enjoying an evening meal. SERVICE The staff were welcoming, informative and friendly. Food was delivered to the table at a nice pace, meaning that we didn’t feel rushed and could sit back and enjoy a relaxing evening. FOOD The menu is split in to four sections, offering Meze platters that are ideal for sharing, pasta and risotto, steaks, fish main courses, and ‘the rest’. Dishes take inspiration from across the Med and further afield, providing something for everyone to enjoy. We kicked things off with the crispy duck salad. Strips of delicious duck were set on a bed of watercress and cucumber, with a hoisin style dressing – a refreshing and tasty start to the meal. For main, we opted for the roasted cod supreme.

DRINK Aqua has a well stocked bar with cocktail menu, and an extensive wine list. We opted for a glass of Stoneburn Sauvignon blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand and the fresh citrus notes perfectly accompanied the cod and cut through the smoky chorizo.
