Location:

Lanthorne Place is nestled on a quiet residential road in the coastal town of Broadstairs in Kent, with Stone Bay Beach a 5-minute walk away, recently awarded the Blue Flag Award for cleanliness – a hit with families for its rock-pooling and soft sands. Close by are breathtaking cliff-top walks and the Viking Coastal Trail, beckoning cyclists on a 32-mile loop of the Isle of Thanet. Broadstairs was voted the Which? Best Seaside Town in Kent for 2023, and it is not hard to see why. Its golden sands, colourful beach huts, fisherman’s cottages and bustling High Street– the latter a 20-minute walk from Lanthorne Place – are picture postcard perfect. Adding structure are regular events, including the 3-day Broadstairs Food Festival, the Broadstairs Dickens

Festival, Bands on the Sands and Broadstairs Folk Week. The town isn’t just for summer, however, and amenities for year-round living are profuse; supermarkets, pharmacies and healthcare essentials serve a loyal locale, while eight schools rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted are within 3 miles of the development.

Broadstairs certainly has the same appeal as Cornwall’s coastal elite but is much closer to London – and more affordable. In fact, London St. Pancras is 1 hour 22 minutes by train, with many professionals making the daily commute.

Across five nights and weekend afternoons a compilation of the absolute best names in comedy combines with a top selection at the bars plus food from the leading lights of the local scene, all set against the illustrious backdrop of the Queen’s House and Royal Greenwich.

Comedy-lovers from across London and beyond will be getting their annual comedy fix with these masterfully curated mixed-bill shows.

The festival’s creators, Greenwich-raised sibling

team Will Briggs and Cass Randolph, can’t wait to get back to Greenwich.

Will says “It’s a joy to return each year, the festival is so established now our audiences know that each show is stacked with incredible acts. Often they’ll be drawn to a show because of a particular act, and be introduced to several more superb comedians while with us.”

Cass adds “We’re also thrilled to be returning to the Big Top, the outdoor shows served us well during the challenging pandemic years, but to get the shows back under cover feels like a cathartic full circle.”

This year’s event is once again partnered with online new and used car marketplace heycar.

Exploring Smallhythe

Archaeological Investigations by the River Rother

During the summers of 2021 and 2022 a team of archaeologists have dug sixteen trenches in and around Smallhythe Place in Kent, revisiting a site once investigated by the Time Team. This year, the team will return for a third Dig.

Now lying over ten miles inland, the tiny village of Smallhythe was once a port lying alongside the Rother, a river which was also known in the past as the Limen. This tidal stream flowed within a wider managed landscape of medieval harbours, crossing points, drainage channels and land reclamation along the border between Kent and Sussex.

Some of the great ships of the medieval and Tudor royal navy were built here during the 15th and 16th centuries. These included the Jesus, a thousand-ton vessel for Henry V, constructed in 1415 and Henry VIII’s Grand Mistress which set sail in 1545. Hundreds of iron ship nails and roves – the distinctive diamond-shaped washers used to fix the boards of the vessels in place - have been found across the neighbourhood.

To support our investigations, we received grants from the National Trust’s Inclusive Archaeology, Robert Kiln and the Roman Research Funds and from the Royal Archaeological Institute. During 2023, our project has received funding from the Society of Antiquaries and the William and Edith Oldham Charitable Trust.

A team of over sixty National Trust volunteers (which includes members of the Hastings Area Archaeological Research Group, independent specialists and professional archaeologists, students from York, Cardiff, Birkbeck, Kent and Leicester Universities) have participated on site over the first two years of the project.

The finds have been assessed by specialists and reports produced on our work to date: you can read them online here: MNA153490 | National Trust Heritage Records .

We are very excited to be returning to Smallhythe in August 2023 to undertake a final season of fieldwork and to share the results of our discoveries! For more information on the series of accompanying talks and open days we will be hosting at Smallhythe Place.

Realising Potential

Bickley Park School has announced the appointment of Tom Quilter as its new Head. He will take up the post in September 2023.

Tom is currently Deputy Head Upper School at Newton Prep School in Battersea, London. Previously he taught at Thomas’s Clapham and before that in the Junior School at Dulwich College for over 12 years.

He will take over from Sam Patel and Jon Poole who have been Acting Joint-Heads for the last year. They will return to their established positions as Head of Prep and Head of Pre-Prep respectively, working closely with Tom.

The Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) has recently awarded Bickley Park a ‘double excellent’ standard, the highest possible grading for an Independent School, following an inspection in March 2023.

Tom said, “There is simply so much that excites me about Bickley Park. Following the results of an outstanding inspection, it is clear the School is in an extremely strong position, well primed and excited for the future.

“A great Prep School ensures that it explores, identifies and celebrates the strengths of every child. It should offer a truly broad and balanced curriculum giving everyone the opportunity to realise their potential and thrive. The Four

Quadrants of Learning that frame the Bickley Park education in Academics, Outdoors, Arts and Community, are therefore the perfect fit for my educational ethos.

I can’t wait to be part of the community and take the lead in the School’s next chapter”.

Mandeep Hansra, Chair of Governors, said, “We are delighted to have appointed Tom. Through a rigorous recruitment process he displayed a strong understanding of Bickley Park’s central philosophy offering a rounded, high-quality education that enriches and engages boys.  I am confident that supported by the excellent and established Senior Leadership Team, he will be able to build on the School’s reputation for offering the highest quality of education that produces confident, articulate and motivated young men prepared for the next step in their education.”

You can read a more in-depth interview with Tom, as well as the full ISI Focused Compliance and Educational Quality Inspection Report on the school’s website: www.bickleyparkschool.co.uk

A romantic history of ROSES AT CHARTWELL

Roses were among Lady Churchill’s favourite flowers and she has her own dedicated rose garden at Chartwell. 2023 marks 115 years since Sir Winston and Lady Churchill’s wedding day, and to honour the occasion the garden team have planted a new bed of roses:

‘As part of our ongoing refurbishment of Lady Churchill’s Rose Garden, we have replanted one of the beds with a variety called ‘Bride & Groom’. This pink, hybrid tea rose has dark pink buds that open into large, lighter pink blooms.’ Christopher Lane, Garden & Outdoors Manager at Chartwell

There would always be roses on occasions celebrating Winston and Clementine’s love. In the summer of 1908 Winston decided to propose to Clementine and chose Blenheim Palace as the place where he would do so. When the day came, he asked if they could go for a walk in the rose garden. However, a torrential rainstorm began and they sought shelter in the Temple of Diana, where he asked her to marry him and she accepted.

On the day of their wedding, Clementine’s bouquet contained white tuberoses, while her bridesmaids carried cream roses. Her brother, Oswald recalled; ‘we strewed the petals of the roses from the bridesmaids’ bouquets over the Bride and Bridegroom and their path’. Their life together as a married couple began in a flurry of rose petals.

Fifty years on, Winston and Clementine were presented with a wonderful rose-themed gift for their golden wedding anniversary. The family chose to plant an avenue of golden roses at Chartwell containing 29 different varieties. Churchill’s youngest daughter Mary explained ‘We took golden

to range from creamy yellow right through to delicate orange’.

Given that the Churchills’ wedding anniversary was in September (not the best time of year to appreciate a new rose garden), the family commissioned a beautiful book of 29 rose paintings by a variety of artists, from professionals to friends. The vellum book is now on permanent display in the Dining Room at Chartwell. The Golden Rose Avenue remains a core feature within the walled garden at Chartwell; a floral monument to the Churchills’ remarkable marriage and a love that lasted a lifetime.

Totally Thames 2023

Friday 1st – Saturday 30th September 2023

Totally Thames is returning to celebrate the capital’s river with a month of exciting events. There will be five festival hubs; Brentford; Royal Docks; London Bridge and Southbank; Greenwich; and Kingston upon Thames.

The incredible annual festival highlights the importance of the river Thames, how it impacts the population, and the importance of protecting it and the nature and communities around it. This year’s programme will include photography exhibitions, art installations, dance, concerts, talks and tours.

Weekend One will see the Creative Mile in Brentford, with events celebrating the artists and creativity flowing through the heart of Brentford. At the listed estate Syon House, Once Up On a Cube by Scirocco Dance Theatre, is a playful, sitespecific performance promoting green architecture and reclaiming our public spaces.

Weekend Two is at the Royal Docks with an

exciting installation by artist David Cotterrell. He will create a new geyser, shooting 500 litres of water 30 metres into the air daily, which will be seen from the IFS Cloud Cable Car, streets and nearby buildings.

Weekend Three will hold numerous events in London Bridge and Southbank - including Tied 3, exploring connections between women and their environment where six women in timeless clothing will construct a fishing net that gradually widens outward. At the Old Operating Theatre in London Bridge, audiences can discover Tidal Traces -an exhibition of video works, cyanography, micrography and chromatography by Irma Isara. It will explore environmental issues through the material that finds its way into the river.

Weekend Four will be at the Greenwich hub, exploring the history of the Thames and one of its historic activities – mudlarking. Their Mudlarking and Art exhibition is an interactive exhibit of visual and performance art that re-identifies this historic area,. There will be creative workshops, interactive walks and artist talks throughout the weekend.

Weekend Five will be in Kingston upon Thames with Creative Flow: Kingston, Art and the River delving into the borough’s centurieslong association with creativity and the river. The area has been an abundant source of creative inspiration for artists and authors from the 17th century through to present day.

These events and many more will bring each of the festival hubs to life along the river, with more events and activities to be announced. For more details, visit thamesfestivaltrust.org

WESTMINSTER SECURITY ALWAYS ON GUARD

Summer has arrived as has the surge in home burglaries. Statistically, you are more likely to become a victim of burglary in the summer. The importance of residential security in London and the home counties is more important now than ever, particularly for high-net-worth individuals who are concerned about protecting their families and assets. With the ever-increasing crime rates and a vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, it is crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security.

One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax-deductible business expense.

In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can

take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors and gates, close windows when you go out, keep your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends in criminal activity, such as the use of social media to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect their homes and assets, homeowners can help to ensure the safety and security of their families and possessions for the peace of mind that comes with good security awareness and measures.

Smile with confidence this summer

Good oral health can have so many life-changing benefits. A healthy smile is a happy one. It can truly transform the way we look, how we feel about ourselves, as well as improving the health of our mouth – and our body too.

Teeth for life

By brushing our teeth twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste, using dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth, using an alcohol-free fluoride mouthwash to help prevent plaque build-up and maintaining a low-in-sugar diet, you can help reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Whole-body health

Our teeth also act as the gateway to our body, so ensuring that you have good oral hygiene will prevent gum disease, which can be a risk factor for more serious health conditions. By keeping our teeth and gums healthy we are also more likely to reduce our risk of certain cancers, and some forms of dementia too.

See a dentist and hygienist regularly Visit your dentist for a check-up every six to 12 months, so they can check your mouth for early signs of tooth decay and gum disease. A hygienist will be able to get to those hard-to-reach places you can’t get to: by removing harmful plaque and tartar which cause gum disease, and other tooth and gum problems. They’ll also give you tips on how to maintain great oral health at home. Speak to your dentist about how often you should see a hygienist.

Looking for a whiter or straighter smile?

Eustace Dental & Implant Clinic offer a range of treatments that can restore the appearance of your teeth, so you’re summer ready. Teeth whitening is a simple solution that can immediately improve the colour of your teeth and boost your self-confidence. And, with no need for fixed braces or wires, Invisalign® clear aligners are a quick and discreet teeth straightening solution for crowding, spacing or bite problems.

Don’t forget to smile

Dental care is essential to staying healthy, and happy. The more we take care of our smile, the more we want to share it with the world. Eustace Dental & Implant Clinic are welcoming new patients, and look forward to helping you smile for life.

Face the Sun

‘Use sunscreen every day’ is the ultimate skincare commandment. Dermatologists and beauty buffs alike agree that protecting your face from harmful UV rays – while simultaneously preventing wrinkles – should be a priority for everyone.

“Skin is the body’s first line of defence from everyday external aggressors which damage your skin such as UV rays,” says Prof Christian Aldridge, consultant dermatologist for LifeJacket Skin Protection.

“The damage from these can have cosmetic, physical and long-term health consequences. At best, it can age your skin and cause you discomfort but at worst, can give you a skin disease you really don’t want.”

That’s why daily protection of your skin is critical, particularly on those areas that are exposed to the sun regularly, such as your face. But in spite of all the warnings we receive, the message isn’t getting through to everyone.

A new survey from LifeJacket and Melanoma UK found that 10% of respondents rarely use SPF, while one in 20 says they never use it.

To make it more likely you’ll stick to a daily habit, finding a product you love can be a huge help – attempting to rub a thick, chalky cream into your skin is not the answer.

The good news is, facial sunblocks have come a long way, and there’s a whole new batch of lightweight but effective lotions, serums and gels that are a delight to use – and many of them are under the £20 mark.

“To adequately protect your face, I recommend 5ml (about a teaspoon) of SPF of at least 30 every day,” says Aldridge.

“Especially during the months of April to September, to ensure long-term skin protection. Application should be repeated if outside for long periods or undertaking exercising in the light.”

Bespoke & Quintessentially BRITISH HOME CARE

If you’ve meandered along Chislehurst High Street recently, you’ll have seen one of Chislehurst’s oldest retail spaces, Paperlane (owned by the wonderful Barbara) has handed it’s keys to Chislehurst Healthcare as she begins her retirement after a whopping 33 years. With Barbara’s full blessing, Chislehurst Healthcare has begun transforming the space with its brand new shop front taking shape, ensuring they keep Barbara’s well known custom of an open front door to all who pay a visit. The stunning navy blue looks simply exquisite framing the golden lettering, showcasing the precision to detail and success already behind this private healthcare brand; a stark contrast to the reputation afforded to many within this sector.

But entrepreneur Elle Sena, Founder and CEO has a vision for Chislehurst Healthcare, and that’s to change the face of health and social care. No longer does Elle want healthcare to be a mere clinical exchange between patient and carer, but a bespoke and caring; once only afforded by the very few. With three decades of experience in business, ranging from not only health and social care but also recruitment, Elle has put her all into creating Chislehurst Healthcare, a private healthcare provider offering at-home care, as well as mental health wrap-around care, supported living

and recruitment and staff supply; and this is just the beginning. But in order to truly cement a brand like Chislehurst Healthcare within the sector, Elle knew she needed to craft the perfect team around her and she’s certainly done that.

Elle, a visionary in her team’s eyes, saw only one person in the position of Director of Operations and that was the professionally esteemed Cheryl Cartwright, formerly Lead Nurse of Eltham College for 13.5 years and Practice Nurse at both Sundridge and Chislehurst Medical Practice prior to that. With over 25 years experience across a wealth of healthcare settings, in both NHS and private healthcare, including as an oncology nurse, Cheryl was the obvious choice. Cheryl will assist in taking the lead on key Chislehurst Healthcare projects whilst driving forward this exclusive healthcare provider and its founder’s visions to even greater heights.

Supporting Cheryl is Stacey Bayes-McCabe, the Front of House Care Manager; the first person you’re likely to see stepping into our offices. With 18 years of experience in the care field, first having worked for SENCO for young children with autism, Stacey offers a robust insight into the world of health and social care having spent 17 years in the specialties of dementia care and palliative care, right here in Chislehurst itself.

Chislehurst Healthcare, having received such a warm welcome from both the local community and local businesses, will officially be opening its doors this coming summer. With that in mind, on your next visit to Chislehurst High Street, we hope you’ll take the time to learn more about their services and how they can be of support to you and your loved ones.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 3 DAYSOFDESIGN 2023

extraordinary lighting, accessories and materials. Trends? Not up here – the new northern pieces of 2023 are created to last a lifetime and to be sent through time down the generations. 3daysofdesign spotlighted exquisite making skills, rejoicing in material and texture while never forgetting sustainability. Brands also looked into themselves, honing in on their illustrious legacies and giving them respectful, contemporary updates. Here’s the Chaplins report on the coolest Nordic newness.

PK1 CHAIR, CARL HANSEN & SØN

It’s that time of year when the eyes of international interiors enthusiasts turn north, as 3daysofdesign puts on a fresh extravaganza showcasing the best and newest innovations from the Nordic design community. Now in its 10th edition, the festival takes over Copenhagen’s showrooms, streets and studios for a celebration of exceptional design, featuring the most distinguished furniture and brands as well as those on-the-rise crafting

Revered for its beautiful approach to natural materials, Danish brand Carl Hansen & Søn introduce the PK1 Chair by Poul Kjærholm in woven paper cord. Originally designed in 1955, the lightweight and stackable seat contrasts the industrialism of its steel frame with an organic, durable, earth-friendly paper cord woven seat –comfort meeting minimalism. Each chair takes 15 hours and 180 metres of cord to intricately hand weave with a technique that is equally as attractive on both sides.

FIREPLACE CHAIR, HOUSE OF FINN JUHL

Danish designer Finn Juhl’s beautiful Fireplace Chair is back after being out of production for 60 years. Originally created in 1946, the distinctive design was a much sought-after vintage classic across global auction houses, and is now happily available to all.

Exuding the designer’s philosophy for warmth and bringing people together, the chair is for fostering conversation within, as well as unwinding. Expertly crafted in Denmark, the chair showcases unparalleled making skill in its between-legs cross, along with its sensual timber frame.

GUBI CARMEL TABLE BY OEO STUDIO

The jewel of Gubi’s SS23 collection, the Carmel Table by OeO Studio, combines the organic with the manufactured and the playful with the precise. Inspired by the designers’ travels along the Pacific Coast, its show-stealing surface delivers a burst of vivid Californian colour and energy in

Created with graphic simplicity, the timeless beauty of the Tradition modular seating series by Povl B. Eskildsen invites indoor and outdoor use through any season.

‘Tradition elaborates on traditional spindle furniture designs, drawing clear references to mid-

century renditions of chairs,’ explains Eskildsen. ‘It looks to the Danish design tradition, fulfilling a function while looking visually appealing. At the same time, it draws on the way we seek to create personal spaces in furniture design, for rest and relaxation’.

Colours of Sound

Devialet Mania’s first line of exclusive edition Seasonal Colours will be this summer’s most sought-after collector’s item

While on the surface, sound and colour don’t seem to have much in common, they are intrinsically linked in the world of acoustics. The colour of sound, also known as the “noise spectrum,” refers to how much energy flows at different sound frequencies. Dedicated to delivering transformative sound in unique packages, Devialet took inspiration from this concept to develop Seasonal Colours Exclusive Editions for a truly emotive listening experience.

The subtle hue of Sunset Rose is inspired by  the energy transition felt at  the end of the day as the sky changes colours, while Sandstorm is an ode to the untamed beauty of mineral landscapes, where time feels suspended and imagination runs wild. Both colours echo Devialet Mania’s dazzling stereo sound through thoughtful, luxury design.

With the added burst of colour, the  exclusive editions feature the industry-leading proprietary technologies embedded in Devialet Mania, delivering the same expansive 360° sound, for a state-of-the-art listening experience in a compact, portable form.

ASC (Active Stereo Calibration) uses four microphones and embedded intelligence capabilities to allow Devialet Mania to automatically adapt the audio rendering to suit its surroundings. When Devialet Mania is placed in the centre of a room, 360° stereo mode is automatically activated. With four full-range drivers and two SAM®powered subwoofers (Speaker Active Matching) in a

push-push configuration, Devialet Mania delivers powerful stereo sound at frequencies as low as 30Hz and as high as 20,000 Hz, demonstrating yet another triumph in audio innovation by the company’s team of expert engineers.

Like to travel in style? Alongside the new and exclusive Seasonal Colours, Devialet has launched Devialet Mania Cocoon, a custom-design sleeve that seamlessly moulds to fit the portable smart speaker, guaranteeing total protection on the move. You can even personalise as you go, with Devialet Mania Cocoon offering both a woven logo shoulder strap and rubber handle for a sleek portable experience. Each Seasonal Colour has inspired a musical playlist that reflects the poetry of the colours of sound. For Sunset Rose, Devialet has crafted Pink Noise, which, sounding like a waterfall, is not only often used to tune loudspeaker systems in professional audio, but is one of the most commonly observed signals in biological systems. Like a steady rain, wind rustling through trees, or waves on a beach, Pink Noise will provide the perfect chillout playlist for a truly relaxing experience.

Home Cinema Lighting Design

Home cinema lighting can make or break the atmosphere and experience in your home cinema room. That is why it is very important to carefully consider what type of lighting you should have installed.

Ahome cinema room should be dark enough to not distract from or upset the image projected but also bright enough for you to navigate out of the room without tripping over the dog.

Many home cinemas have “house lights”, commonly these are your standard LED downlights which can be switched on when you want to clean the room or use for other purposes other than watching films.

In this article, we detail the home cinema lighting we at Lake Home commonly install. Not every solution is right for every customer. We highly advise getting a consultation with a home cinema expert to help you choose the right lighting design for you.

Starlight Ceiling

Possibly the most popular home cinema lighting design we install. Starlight ceilings use fibre optics to create pinpoint lights to form a starfield on your ceiling. Starlights add that ‘wow’ factor to your home cinema and are perfect for watching films as they do not distract the viewer and the projection image. They don’t however, provide enough light suitable for navigation in and out of the room so an additional light source is recommended.

Stair Lighting

Similar to what you will see in a cinema, under step lighting allows you and your guests to see where the steps are and also provide some ambient lighting

too. These lights can easily be dimmed or turned up depending on the situation and can be bright enough for all situations.

LED Downlights

Although a pretty standard affair, LED downlights are ideal for many situations in a home cinema. They can be dimmed to a very low level so they do not distract and can be turned up for navigation around the room and cleaning. Some LED light fittings available can also be colour changing, allowing you to set the mood however you want.

Cove Lighting

Cove lighting creates a fantastic effect of a light beam surrounding your room. An LED strip is installed around the cove of the room which creates a great effect of height as well as ambient lighting. In a lot of cases, the LED strip features colour changing abilities so you can set the mood just right.

Lighting Control Systems

A lighting control system is essential to your home cinema. Without some form of intelligent lighting system, you will have to jump from your seat every time you want to dim or switch on lights. Lighting control systems allow you to sit back and relax, controlling your lighting either by automation: For example when a film starts the lights dim automatically, or by some form of remote control such as a smart device or smart assistant speaker.

A home cinema room should be dark enough to not distract from the image projected but also bright enough for you to navigate out of the room without tripping over the dog.

Quality electrics INDOORS AND OUT

It takes experience and dedication to provide the best options to homeowners to choose from.

Calvin Hale and his colleagues at Hale Electrics, a Bromley-based business that has been trading for over 20 years, have that dedication, as well as a lot of experience.

When Calvin started out, hardly anyone had heard of smart homes, LED illumination wasn’t lighting homes and streets, and electric cars and charging points were for the future. Now, all of them are a reality, and Hale Electrics has moved with the times. What hasn’t changed is Calvin’s pride in providing a high-quality service and in employing welltrained professional electricians. As part of that high-quality service, if you call a Hale Electrics electrician, there is no call-out fee, something that was common in the trade for a long time, meaning that homeowners found themselves with fees to pay whether any work was done or not.

In recent years, more people have been working from home

and from garden offices. Hale Electrics can install and upgrade garden electrics, power home and garden offices, and work with landscape gardeners.  So, if you want your home and garden to be ‘smarter’, to integrate the latest technology, to have outstanding, innovative lighting and sound, and to choose the most efficient electrics and minimise energy usage, talk to Hale Electrics.

Calvin says, “The neatness, utility, and sleekness of the electrical installations we are responsible for is a high priority. We also, naturally, prioritise safety, and simply being a team that homeowners trust. We’re efficient and tidy, and we listen to our clients…. Home electrics have come on so much. There are fabulous options for lighting styles that can be literally breath-taking! The latest technologies offer a level of timed and remote control that earlier generations couldn’t have imagined.

“Electricians can help people dream! From the moment an architect draws up the plans for a new residential property, a refurbishment, or an extension, we can offer our expert advice. Or when a homeowner wants to make changes, we can deal with an unplanned issue.”

Hale Electrics offer free site surveys and estimates. Why not give them a call?

MAUVE-ING ON UP

It might be one of the greenest paints on the market but eco paint specialists Victory Colours has expanded its colour offering with a stunning deep lilac.

Monikered Bluebell Wood No.110, the purple shade was created by luxury wallpaper specialists Olenka Design – whose Alice wallpapers are available from Victory Colours. The shade was created to complement the Alice Tea Rose colourway.

Victoria Yardley, Managing Director of Victory Colours, said: “Olenka Designs’ wallpapers are a perfect fit for Victory Colours so when they approached us with the idea of launching a new shade to complement one of their most popular colourways, we were up for the challenge.

“The result is a beautiful, brooding mauve, reminiscent of the bluebells that come to life each spring.”

Bluebell Wood No.110 is available now from victorycolours.co.uk priced at £44.95 for 2.5-litres of matt emulsion.

Yet with the support and loyalty of our valued customers we have survived and indeed are now thriving with some excellent events coming up.

Midweek we will be hosting events such as Quiz Nights with a Twist which will be held the first

Wednesday of the Month from 7:30 pm, De Vine Comedy nights which will showcase some new up and coming comedians as well as one off events such as a Wine Tasting Call my Bluff Evening which will take place on Wednesday 24th May at 7:00 pm. We would advise booking tables for these events.

Every Thursday we have our resident DJ playing soulful classics, Fridays and Saturdays we have a mixture of DJs all of which will ensure that our customers let their hair down, dance and have a good time. Every Sunday we have an array of talented singers who take our customers on a trip down memory lane with well-known songs that they can sing and even dance to.

The relationship between diet, sleep and overall health is two-sided, says Gabi Zaromskyte, registered nutritionist and founder of Honestly Nutrition. “Meaning what we eat and drink affects our sleep, but also, the quality and duration of sleep can affect our food choices,” Zaromskyte explains.“Scientific research has increasingly shed light on the significant impact of dietary choices on cognitive function, mood, and overall physical and mental health,” she adds.

Certain dietary patterns and specific nutrients have been found to influence the sleep-wake cycle, sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), and sleep architecture (the different stages of sleep), notes Zaromskyte.

She continues: “And the quality and timing of our food and beverage intake can impact the production of sleep-regulating hormones, such as melatonin, which plays a critical role in regulating our sleep-wake cycle.”

However, as Dr Maja Schaedel, co-founder of The Good Sleep Clinic points out, it’s important to understand that most research done so far shows that even though certain foods may be higher in melatonin, that does not necessary equate to falling asleep quicker.

“You may have higher levels of melatonin, but if you’ve got stuck in a bad habit of tossing and turning for two hours before drifting off, or waking at 3am and not being able to return to sleep, foods high in melatonin are not going to solve your problem,” says Schaedel.

She suggests that generally, it’s best to eat your evening meal at least two hours before bed, to avoid any indigestion, spikes in blood sugar and increase in body temperature that can occur while digesting.

“If you tend to get peckish later in the evening,

then plan a snack an hour or two before bed,” Schaedel adds. “It’s best to have something high in protein, like Greek yoghurt or nuts, and low in complex carbohydrates to avoid any spikes and falls in blood sugar.”

Also, it might be wise to avoid the usual culprits which can trigger discomfort. “Fatty and spicy foods can cause heartburn and indigestion which can hinder good sleep, as well as alcohol, caffeine and tobacco,” says Lisa Artis, deputy CEO of The Sleep Charity.

Cheese

“Cheese gets a bad reputation as it’s commonly believed to give us nightmares, but actually it’s the opposite,” says Artis. “Cheese, and other dairy products, contain tryptophan, an amino acid which helps us to nod off more easily, and calcium which helps to reduce stress.”

Cherries

To find out if foods with naturally occurring melatonin make a difference for you, Artis suggests giving cherries a go – particularly tart cherries, which have been found to naturally boost the production of melatonin. Zaromskyte says several studies have shown significant improvements in sleep quality and duration when consuming Montmorency cherries or tart cherry juice, where the concentration of naturally occurring melatonin and phytochemicals is higher compared to whole cherries.

Low sugar cereals

“Cereal can also help us to sleep – but we must be mindful of the type of cereal,” says Artis. “There

are lots of sugary options on the market, so try to avoid these.”

She says complex carbohydrate-rich foods increase the availability of tryptophan in the bloodstream which, in turn, may help us to nod off.

Bananas

Bananas are an excellent source of magnesium, potassium and tryptophan, says Artis. In other words, a great choice when it comes to supporting sleep. “While bananas have lots of great qualities for sleep, all fruit contains sugar too, so be mindful of this in the run up to bedtime,” she notes. “Try blending one banana with one cup of milk or soya milk to make an ideal evening drink.”

Almonds

“Almonds are a brilliant source of calcium and magnesium, which promotes both sleep and muscle relaxation,” says Artis. “Magnesium also helps to regulate melatonin levels and keep blood sugar levels stable overnight.”

Magnesium rich foods

Magnesium, an essential mineral, has been found to play a crucial role in sleep regulation – and can influence sleep quality and duration, says Zaromskyte. “It acts as a co-factor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those involved in the production and regulation of neurotransmitters and hormones that impact sleep.” Some magnesium-rich foods cited to help improve sleep quality include pumpkin seeds, spinach, almonds and dark chocolate (which is packed with health-enhancing antioxidants too).

Omega-3 rich foods

Although research is limited, some evidence suggests foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may promote better, longer sleep, says Zaromskyte. “For example, walnuts are a source of melatonin and other sleep-regulating compounds, such as an amino acid tryptophan and omega-3 fatty acids,” she says. “Other omega-3-rich foods include oily fish, like salmon, trout, mackerel and sardines, chia seeds and flaxseeds.”

Ambiance

A very warm welcome greeted us when we entered The Cricketers Knoll on a Wednesday evening. Cosy and tastefully decorated, it offered the perfect cosy spot whilst raining outside.

Service

The bar staff and owner were very friendly and accommodating. Luke, the current owner has lots of enthusiasm and a passion for ensuring that the pub supports and is at the heart of its local community.

Food

A well put together pub menu with favourites like bangers and mash, fish and chips, and ham egg and chips - but all delivered fresh and to a high standard. To start, our favourite were the chicken wings in a smokey Bourbon sauce served with a crunchy side salad that had delicious Thai style flavours. The mini wings were juicy and extremely moreish, and if they’d have sold it we’d have bought a bottle of the Bourbon sauce to take home! For main, the hand raised puff pastry steak, kidney and ale pie looked and tasted impressive, but the star of the show was the homemade Cricketers burger - a handmade chunky beef burger served in a bun with cheddar, bacon, gherkins, burger sauce and salad, and sides of fries and homemade coleslaw. Brownie, profiteroles and ice cream were on offer for dessert, but we were so full from the previous courses that we couldn’t fit them in…we’ll have to return to enjoy them another time, along with the much talked about roast dinner on a Sunday.

Drink

The bar has a great selection of drinks with some good wines, beers, and spirits.
