Join the genius behind comedy Powerpoints for his brand-new show. Dave Gorman, the man behind Dave TV’s hit show Modern Life Is Goodish as well as Are You Dave Gorman? and Googlewhack Adventure, is back on the road with a brand-new live show, Powerpoint To The People. The ‘high priest of the comedy Powerpoint talk’ (The Times) is touring again – as much as anything to demonstrate that a Powerpoint presentation doesn’t have to involve a man in a grey suit standing behind a lectern and saying, ‘next slide please’. We’ve all had enough of that, so let’s put it all behind us and never speak of it again – there are far more important things to analyse. Well… they’re more important in Dave’s head anyway. Smallhythe Place

The curtain is set to rise at the National Trust’s Smallhythe Place as preparations are underway for the start of the Barn Theatre Season. Running from June to September, the property will host a range of fascinating live performances and talks in the 17th century Barn on site. An annual continuation of a long-standing tradition. Smallhythe Place was once home to famed actress of the Victorian stage Ellen Terry from 1899 to 1928. Tucked away outside of Tenterden in the Wealden countryside, this 16th century house and cottage gardens became a muchneeded reprieve away from the busy life Terry led in London. In her later years, she spent a lot of her time relaxing on the farmland and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere away from the stage. It can be to no one’s surprise then that she continuously refused the proposal from her daughter Edy Craig to transform the barn into a theatre.

After Ellen Terry passed away in 1928, Edy, who was a talented and prolific theatre producer and designer, set about turning Smallhythe Place into a memorial museum dedicated to her mother’s life work. A year later, Edy held the venue’s first performance.

Throughout the years, the transformed Barn Theatre played host to many famous figures of the stage including Sir John Gielgud, Sir Donald Sinden, Michael Redgrave, Nigel Hawthorne and Peggy Ashcroft. In 2020 it was announced

“Smallhythe Place was once home to famed actress of the Victorian stage Ellen Terry. Tucked away in the Wealden countryside, this 16th century house and cottage gardens became a much-needed reprieve away from the busy life Terry led in London”

that leading actress Joanna Lumley OBE would assume the mantle of the new patron of the Barn Theatre. Visitors can still see the names of the artists who have graced the stage here in the etchings on wooden beams and on the seats in the audience.

Smallhythe Place has proven itself time and time again to be a thriving environment for artists. An accolade continued to this day. Visitors are welcome to be part of this artistic cycle in celebrating this year’s theatre season. From adaptations of Jane Austen and Shakespeare to archaeology talks and a Drag cabaret, the programme at Smallhythe Place is one to be celebrated.

When to visit Smallhythe Place is open Wed-Sun, 11am-5pm. Enjoy a Summer stroll through the rose arbour and gardens or explore the theatrical world inside the cottage.

Tickets for the theatre season can be purchased online at nationaltrust.org.uk/smallhythe-place.

THE KENT FOOD FEST

The Festival Comeback Year

What can we expect from this year’s comeback Kent Food Fest?

2023 marks the comeback of The Kent Food Fest. A festival truly passionate about good food and music. The community event, which is in it’s 8th year, is set to bring the best of street food, family entertainment and up and coming music acts to the region this June. For a full action-packed day, festival goers can enjoy a unique community festival located in the heart of Sevenoaks, in the magical fields of Little Elses’ in Weald, on Saturday 3rd June.

We’ve added so much more to our festival this year .

Tell us more about the live and interactive elements.

We still have an amazing line-up of vintage food trucks, award-winning bars with balconies, farmers market, arts and crafts stalls and the very best of British bands.

We have carefully selected acts that have performed on BBC Introducing so music lovers won’t be disappointed. As always, we try to support unsigned talent. We treat our bands and artists like rock stars and have become fans of their music.

But we’ve pushed the boundaries for our comeback year We have some epic independent artists performing in our cosy, tented live lounge area. And for dance music lovers, we have Ibiza style DJ’s playing in a purpose-built treehouse in our secret forest.

New to the event this year is also a pop-up iconic art exhibition, hosted by The Ben Oakley Gallery.  The award-winning London-based Gallery will have some amazing signed artwork that can be bought on the day. Keep following our social media to get a sneak peak of everything on show.

For the classic car lovers out there, we are very excited to be bringing in some incredible classic cars. We have a number of classic car clubs bringing their beautiful cars for our pop-up classic car show, as well as local classic car enthusiasts who can feature their cars in the show and gain free entry to the festival! A win-win for all!

We’re also pleased to have The Outdoors Project at the festival, (which is an adventure club for kids that takes a fresh approach to childcare). And this promises to offer lots of creative and interactive games for the kids to enjoy outside in the fresh air. Not forgetting our funfair and kids crafting area.

What type of food can we expect see this year?

We have some super quirky vintage food trucks serving up gourmet food from Mexican, Thai, Rotisserie Chicken, Mexican, Caribbean, gourmet burgers and authentic Italian Wood Fired pizzas. There’s also a wide selection of vegetation, vegan and gluten free options. If a local venison burger tickles your fancy, you’ll be in for a treat. We’re also excited to reveal one of our vegan food traders, cooking up a storm is none other than last year’s Junior Master Chef

finalists.

Tell us about the new location.

The setting of the festival is very important to us. The venue must have that wow factor. We’ve previously held The Kent Food Fest at Lullingston Castle and Bradbourne House. Both very impressive locations. And being countryside-based, we loved hosting it at St Clere estate and The Mount Vineyard. All very local, impressive and prestigious settings. Little Elses in Weald Sevenoaks is our venue for 2023 and we can’t wait for you all to experience this magical setting. An added bonus is that it’s located only 5 minutes from the centre of Sevenoaks, just beyond the rolling hills of Knole Park National Trust land.

A Pottery Challenge

The Potters’ Village will be just one element of the Contemporary Craft Fair which has quickly grown to become one of the most popular contemporary craft fairs in the South East.

The event is held in semi open-sided marquees within the award-winning gardens which, in May, including stunning displays of wisteria, azaleas and rhododendrons and of course with the backdrop of the historic castle – the childhood home of Anne Boleyn.

Craft In Focus will once again be staging a Contemporary Craft Fair at Hever Castle from 18-21 May and this year will include a Potters’ Village alongside the 140 other exhibitors showing and selling work in various disciplines including glass, textiles, woodwork, jewellery, metalwork, artwork and more.  The Potters’ Village will include several of the potters who have appeared on previous series of the TV programme, The Great Pottery Throw Down.

The artists here will be staging various duelling challenges amongst themselves such as throwing as many pots as possible within 10 minutes, the best sculpture in 15 minutes and building the tallest structure in 15 minutes with a set amount of clay.

Some of the potters will be demonstrating and offering workshops where visitors can have a go at creating something themselves and, among the demonstrations will be small wheel throwing creating miniature pieces on a tiny wheel and raku firing where glazed ceramics are placed in a combustible material which creates beautiful colours on the finished items.

Craft In Focus events offer the public a calibre of exhibitor not often seen at other craft fairs and the organiser has a strict policy of not allowing any bought in or imported work.  Exhibitors have been selected from amongst the very best and come from throughout the UK.  They have all designed and made the work that they display and have been selected for their individuality and innovation in contemporary design, as well as outstanding technical ability. The UK has a wealth of individual and talented professional designer makers and artists who produce wonderful original items that simply cannot be found amongst the mass-produced and imported goods on the high street. Brayleys, a great fit!

Thomas Bolton tells us about working at Brayley Honda

How long have you been in the motor trade for?

I joined the motor trade when Brayleys took over at Orpington Honda, we’ve just had our first years anniversary, so happy birthday to us!

What were you doing before car sales?

Before Brayleys I was an assistant manager at a store called Crockett & Jones in Burlington Arcade which is a luxury shoe brand, selling shoes up to £5,000 (I know crazy!)

How did you make the transition from selling shoes into selling cars and was it difficult? Well, you might say it was a great fit! With great guidance from my Sales manager John, it also helps Mr Brayley was a customer of mine for many years at Crockett & Jones, and I couldn’t turn down a great opportunity to work for his company.

That’s a great story – was this an easy and confident decision to make and did you make the right one?

Definitely the right choice, even though it’s only been a year I feel very settled, and my confidence levels feel like I’ve been here for many more!

What would be the most difficult thing you’ve found going into the Motor trade?

I would say the hours away from my family

And the easiest?

The clients, I have found and spoken to some of the nicest people in the area, definitely makes my job easier and the days go much quicker!

Tell us about working weekends and balancing having a young family?

I work most Saturdays with the occasional one off, and every other Sunday. I have always worked the weekends so I’m not against working them, no greater feeling then coming home to my little girls screaming “DADDY!” as I walk through the door.

Sounds like it works for you. What advise would you have for anybody wanting to join the motor trade?

Do it! Take your time to learn the processes in place, you get what you put in. Work hard, put in the hours and reap the rewards at the end.

Why Brayleys?

Because of the great family feel withing the business. Brayleys is a big expanding family-owned cooperation who have the customers best interests at heart, building our reputation for fair deals, friendly staff, and great service.

Why Honda?

To buy a Honda is a great investment, and it’s likely you’ll be spending your money sensibly in regards to fuel economy, reliability, resale value, and quality workmanship. Honda has been producing exceptional vehicles for nearly seven decades, and since its beginning, it has consistently won awards and topped the charts in virtually every category.

What’s your favorite car in the Honda range?

HR-V for me is a great car, works well for my needs, has the eHEV engine, great fuel economy, modern and sporty look and plenty of space for the kids in the back. I can’t wait for the new  e:Ny1 to come out! It’s the fully electric HR-V very sleek design

Tell us a bit more about the Z-RV?

Z-RV is due to land in the UK towards the end of the year, this is our new mid-sized SUV to run along side the HR-V and CR-V. With the new EHEV engine, it’s a great compromise to those who want to lower emissions but aren’t ready to move fully electric. A sportier design to the HR-V giving enhanced dynamics, practicality and agility.

Do you have a passion for cars and did this help you in your success?

If I’m completely honest I never thought about the motor trade as a career path for myself. But now that I am here, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else, I’m a people person that loves selling. Educating customers and helping them find the right car for the next stages in their life, I know from my own previous experience buying a car can be a very daunting thing, I am here (hopefully) to make it an easy and enjoyable moment.

Finally, can you tell our readers why they should come to Brayley Honda in Orpington and buy a car. Personally I couldn’t think of a better place to buy a car from, we have three departments here Sales, Service and Parts, all waiting to greet customers with a smile and willing to go above and beyond to give you the best experience possible.

employment, there is no necessity for any direct or impending danger. And the expenditure must be in connection with the use or provision of an asset or service which improves personal security.

CEOs, Directors, and other business executives could invest in a wide range of personal security services and assets, such as close protection, security chauffeurs, residential security guards, security doors and windows, and even a secure panic room if required.

Most company owners and directors are unaware that security expenses are tax-deductible for businesses.

While some companies see security as an unnecessary expense, it is essential to protect assets and employees. Investing in security can increase productivity, prevent theft, and protect owners and employees in the event of a robbery or targeted attack. Not only is security a wise investment, but it can also reduce tax liability.

This little-known fact is not widely discussed or published online. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allows companies to offset their security expenses on services and assets that improve property and personal security against their corporation tax liability. However, some requirements must be met to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The perceived threat and risks must be established from the particular trade or

Similarly, a company could invest in office or retail store security, such as CCTV and alarms, security guards, security shutters, etc. even bodyguards for employees in the event of a special threat. Sole traders or limited company directors working from a home-based office could also invest in tax-deductible services and assets to protect themselves from potential threats.

The interpretation of “special threat” is not necessarily prescriptive and introduces a grey area open to interpretation. Therefore, documenting the reasoning for the allowance is essential in case of a subsequent dispute. Businesses can benefit from increased security, improved morale, retention and reputation, productivity, and profits, whilst saving tax by investing in security.

Westminster Security are experts in threat and risk mitigation providing property and personal security in the UK and internationally for highthreat and high-risk business leaders and their families.

The Case for GOLD COINS

Gold has been a valuable commodity for thousands of years. For Rosland customers, there are many reasons why they continue to put their trust in gold. One of the best ways to build a gold collection is by purchasing gold coins, which offer a range of advantages over other forms of portfolio diversification.

COINS V’S BARS

Coins offer some distinct advantages over bars. They are typically easier to sell due to their smaller size and standardised denominations. They also come with an added level of security, as each coin is individually minted and marked with its denomination and year of issue.

VAT & CGT FREE

Gold coins of a certain purity have the unique advantage of being VAT free. Additionally, British legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, meaning you can sell them or pass them on safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to pay a single penny in tax.

TIPS FOR BUYING COINS

If you’re interested in purchasing gold coins, here are Rosland’s top tips to help you make an informed decision...

1. Research, Research, Research

Before making any purchase, it’s important to

research the types of coins you are interested in buying. Consider the historical significance, the rarity, the minting year, and the condition of the coins. This will give you a better understanding of the potential value of the coins over time.

2. Buy from a Reputable Dealer

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing gold coins is to buy from a reputable dealer. This ensures that you are getting authentic gold coins that are not counterfeit. Look for a dealer who is well-established and has a good reputation.

3. Buy Graded

When buying gold coins, it is important to consider buying graded coins. These coins are evaluated, authenticated, and graded by independent thirdparty grading services – at Rosland they use PCGS and NGC to grade all their coins.

4. Consider the Rarity

The rarity of the coins can have a significant impact on their value. The rarity of a coin can be determined by factors such as its mintage, its condition, and its historical significance.

5. Store Your Coins Securely

Finally, it is important to store your coins securely to protect your collection. Rosland offer all their clients the option of a storage solution – fully secure and insured all year round.

What’s growing right under your feet!

The summer solstice will be upon us before long and this is the time of the year to celebrate the height of the summer.

Celebrated at this time of the year when the hedgerows are burgeoning with energy and abundance, Caroline a local Medical Herbalist will be leading several Guided Medicinal Herb Identification Walks around Westerham to explain how many of our most familiar and commonly found hedgerow plants can and are used medicinally. This is done to celebrate Herbal Medicine Awareness Week.

If you had lived only a few hundred years ago and were suffering perhaps from a headache or upset stomach what would you have done? You would not have been able to pop down to the chemist and purchase a blister pack of pain killers or antacids. You would more likely have reached for a basket and gone off for a walk in the surrounding countryside, found the perfect plants to support your needs. Then simply by bringing the plants home and steeping therm into some boiling water water you would make an infusion, which sipped throughout the day would hopefully melt away your painful symptoms. This image conjures up many questions;- How did they know which plant to collect, how much

of it would they need, which part of the plant would they collect and then how to prepare it. What were names of the plants and how did they know what each looked like? Where would they find them growing?

All this was common knowledge passed down empirically from generation to generation. Would you know what to do in this scenario?

If you would like to find out the answers to these questions and many more why not join in on a guided circuitous walk around Beautiful Westerham.

When pain stops play

Terry Edwards, from Essex, had been experiencing knee pain for years whilst playing golf and walking his lovely black miniature Schnauzers, Tilly and Harper. Last year the pain had become so bad that it became intolerable.

“Treating the pain with anti-inflammatory medicines helped to take the edge off, but as time went by the pain became continuous upon standing and I was forced to stop playing golf and taking my dogs for their daily walks.” says Terry.

Whilst golf is considered a low impact sport it isn’t unusual for golfers to experience knee problems – the twisting motion being repeated over and over again can lead to a progressive injury over many years.

Terry made an appointment with his GP and after the initial examination was advised he needed to see an Orthopaedic Consultant. Following a friend’s recommendation, the GP referred Terry to Mr Paul Gibb, Consultant Knee Surgeon at Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

‘I booked an appointment with Mr Gibb, who examined my knee and booked me in for diagnostic scans to see what was going on. When I came back for my review consultation, Mr Gibb confirmed that I needed a knee replacement on my left knee, to get me back to my old self. ’ explained Terry. During this procedure, the damaged joint is removed and replaced with a prosthesis or implant.

Terry continued, ‘He discussed the options available to me including Robotic assisted knee replacement. After some of my own research I decided this was the best option for me”

Nuffield Health’s robotic assisted system is a significant advancement in the way orthopaedic surgeons perform knee replacement surgery. The system works in conjunction with the surgeon’s existing skills to achieve accurate positioning of the knee implants based on each patient’s unique anatomy. This added level of accuracy is designed to improve the function, recovery, feel and

potential longevity of the knee implant.

‘The operation went well with no complications. I used crutches for a short time and with physio and gentle exercise on a bike, I was back walking my dogs after 6-8 weeks. Gradually, increasing my exercise it wasn’t too much longer before I was playing golf once again. I’m really happy with the care I received from Mr Gibb and the team at Nuffield, I would absolutely recommend him to anyone and the robotic assisted knee replacement. I’m pain free and enjoying playing golf and walking my dogs once again.” Terry explained.

If you’re experiencing knee pain, early action is important, speak to you GP.

Elegant Retirement Living

May I introduce myself. My name is Stuart Bennett and I am originally from Worksop in Nottinghamshire.

I am the House Manager of Challoner Court, a retirement home in Bromley owned by Osprey. For the last 24 years, this magical place has been both my home and place of work as I manage the day-to-day operations of the facility.

There have been many improvements over the years with more to come, such as the interior designer led refurbishment of the communal areas this year.

My job is to make sure that everything operates as smoothly as possible and to communicate with residents, who see me every day either when I am in my office or walking around the communal areas. I

help them if they have concerns about anything or need advice.

The communal lounge is a great meeting place where I serve refreshments daily in the mornings and afternoons for residents to enjoy. I also arrange for exercise classes and other communal activities take place there, such as supper parties. Challoner Court is a great place to live with a community spirit that you can really feel when you are here. It has wonderful gardens to relax in or for exercise and there is ample car parking within the grounds. There also very good transport links with bus stops outside the building and the nearby Shortlands national railways station, where you can get a train that will take you to Central London in less than 30 minutes.   I am lucky to have wonderful neighbours, the residents of Challoner Court, who like to organise evening events and social activities for anyone to take part in if they wish, which promotes the friendly atmosphere here at Challoner Court. If you are thinking of retiring to a nice, quiet and safe environment, take a look at Challoner Court in Bromley. It could be just the place for you, and I would welcome the opportunity to show you what Challoner Court has to offer.

ARAMONO: The Beauty of Everyday Life

Although you might ordinarily head to Kensington to see world-renowned treasures at one of its many cultural venues, at Japan House London, until 30 June 2023, you can also delight in the beauty and ingenuity of the everyday.

Guests can get a glimpse into daily life in Japan over the last few hundred years through a display of aramono, a term which refers to household goods such as brooms, brushes, dustpans and baskets which are functional, ordinary and wellloved. This free display shows these objects piled high on a full-scale cart as they would have been in the 19th century by a trader selling his wares on the cart, he pulled along himself.

The display also invites guests to learn about the history of aramano. In Japan’s Muromachi period (1336-1573 CE), larger, cheaper daily commodities

necessary for daily life became known as aramono because they were considered to be ‘rough,’ which is the meaning of the word arai. Rooted in a time before plastic and electricity, aramono were made from natural materials, carefully chosen to ensure longevity. There are few differences between the aramono of then and now, and the functionality and durability of these well-made items carries lessons in design and sustainability that still apply today.

After admiring the everyday beauty of the items on display, you are invited to browse a select range of aramono for sale in the Shop at Japan House London. Whether you’re in need of a broom, brush, dustpan, basket or similar, the simple elegance of these everyday treasures, produced on a small-scale using centuries-old processes, is sure to be a talking point in any home.

CHAPLINS

Spring trend report

The spring that has sprung in the home this year is rather different from the blossomy florals and gentle pastels you might expect to see as the seasons start switching. This year, we want our rooms to be filled with wonder, to open doors to the unexpected and to show us a different perspective on that which we thought we knew.

Our living spaces should be statements, elicit quiet ‘wows’ and challenge the predictable. The 2023 palette is still based around the natural, but with a twist – some tones are bolder, brighter and brazen, while some blend into the backdrop like they’ve been there all along. Shapes and patterns experiment with minimalism which is impactful as well as elegantly pared back. Here’s the Chaplins edit of the very best.

VIVID SKIES

From energetic blazes of ochre to flashes of fiery orange and bursts of intense magenta, 2023 hues are a force of nature, looking to the skies for inspiration and coming back with something surprising. A celebration of the colours that dance across the skies on the most bewitching of nights and beguiling of mornings, these exuberant shades

enliven us, exuding energy and oomph.

The perky early morning/evening-is-coming golden tone of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ME100 armchair by Jeffrey Bernett adds a whimsical, welcoming feel to the seat’s sculptural shape, a dazzling-yet-mellow flash of vitality which gives the whole room a glow.

Glas Italia’s XX Console Table by Johanna Grawunder is an exploration of light and colour made three dimensional. Harnessing the characteristics of a reflective glass prism, its intense pink and sizzling orange shades capture the hues of the most brilliantly-toned sky. COR’s Drop Pouf by Pauline Deltour joyfully deposits a bold burst of could-be-redcould-be-orange into a room, a shade from a sunset in its glorious final throws.

ANGULAR EXPLORATION

Unleash your wild side with the vogue for adventurous angles, courageous corners and liberated lines. A revolt against the rounded forms we’ve been drawn to until recently, these designs are experimental but approachable, their visual sharpness toned down by soft angles, natural materials, neutral shades and an abundance of creativity. It’s expect-the-unexpected with these objects, which flip reverse our go-to smooth shapes and care not for what came before.

Its surface decorated with minimalist modern marquetry, Gallotti&Radice’s Zen Desk by Massimo Castagna intersects angular segments of ash and rosewood for a simple yet striking asymmetric arrangement.

Merging the rounded with wide, open angles, Cattelan Italia’s Sautern Wall Mirror by Tosca Design is a geometric droplet, the area between the pointed steel frame and curved glass highlighted with cut-out negative space.

An explosion of criss-crossing shapes, the Big Bang Pendant Light by Enrico Franzolini and Vicente Gracia Jimenez for Foscarini is a jagged exploration of angular slices, shadows and diffused light.

SERENE SCENERY

If you listen carefully, you might hear the entire design world calling out ‘green is the new grey!’. Transformed into a background colour that’s snuck into our lives, the innately calming character of forest-y, fir-tinted, leafy green has wrapped around us with zero fuss and without anyone really noticing. It’s soothing, brings nature inside, goes with every colour in the spectrum, and makes us

exhale almost involuntarily.

Evoking images of sprawling Nordic firs, Muuto’s Cover Dining Chair by Thomas Bentzen feels like it’s just wandered in from the woodland, the timber’s grain remaining delightfully visible under its greenness.

Merging with the natural yet standing out for its industrial material, the green Outdoor Aplomb Pendant Light by Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere is crafted from concrete tinted in a soothing sage shade, ready to blend in with al fresco backdrops.

The textured, under-the-radar olive tone of Flexform’s Vulcano Outdoor Sofa by Antonio Citterio gives it an au-natural sense of tactility quietly dedicated to the beauty of nature.

OPEN STRUCTURES

Honour the craft skills that go into product design and embrace open structures, pieces that show off their frames, joints and supports and make them a beautiful part of their aesthetic. Honest, functionfused design is on the rise, pieces which don’t seek to hide their origins but are proud of them and harness them as decorative features. This new minimalism adds nothing which doesn’t need to be there, making the most of the building materials and methods which its construction relies upon.

Its body poised within a frame made up of solid Canaletta walnut legs, Porada’s Regent Chest of Drawers by Marelli & Molteni hovers separately from its supporting structure, highlighting its elegant construction as well as the piece’s main body.

Turning joints into decorative accents, the Nimbus Mirror by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu suspends its glazing within a ring of brass, while screws act as attractive accent detailing.

A grid-like skeletal structure of horizonal and vertical lines, the Coordinates C4 Ceiling Light by Michael Anastassiades for Flos illuminates and celebrates its simple scaffold-like form.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.

Picture Perfect Art Lighting

When lighting artwork there are many factors to consider to gain the perfect viewing experience and light the entire canvas well.

There are various light sources available to do this, however using an adaptable and maintainable lensed LED system is by far the best option. Historically, halogen lamps and tungsten filaments have been used but with the development of LEDs over the last 10 years this is the way to go now.

High CRI lensed LEDS will remove damaging heat and UV whilst extending the life by up to 50X longer, giving a greater coverage, bringing out the richer colours and increasing the texture & definition in your art.

Not all LED Art Lights are the same and I will go through the key points that need to be considered when selecting them.

Colour temperature

This is very important when lighting art. Most pieces should be lit with a 2700K warm white light to bring out the rich colours within the piece. Cooler colour temperatures can be used, but these are rare.

Colour rendering index (CRI)

When lighting art you want to use the highest CRI that you can. 98 CRI is currently the highest LED level in the marketplace and will allow the rich reds and blues to show their true colours as well as adding depth and definition to your paintings.

LED lensing & spacing

This will be determined by the canvas dimensions with a spacing of up to 10” each with pre-selected lensing as required from say 15 through to 60 degrees to give a uniform coverage across the canvas. This will remove the points of glare, hotspots and

62 MAY 2023
LUXURY HOUSE & GARDEN GUIDE
“Good picture lighting makes such a difference. Only when fine art is lit correctly can you truly fully appreciate it”

low light levels experienced with older technology. Over illuminated areas will cause long-term damage to your painting.

Lighting levels

Dependent on the composition of the art, examples are sketches, water colours, oils, pastels and acrylics, different intensities of light will be required for each. An oil painting should be lit at <200Lux whereas a paper sketch should not exceed 50Lux. These can be controlled by dimming or other screening methods.

Picture surface

Artwork can be open to the elements or behind glass (standard or anti-glare). The position and angle of the head can remove all reflective points when lighting a painting with glass.

Art light head

The width of the head should not be more than 10-12” less than the canvas width to ensure the edges are lit. If it looks too small, it probably is. To the rear of the art light should be a swivel knuckle. This will allow the cowled front to conceal the lightsources from view. Multiple art light heads can be used successfully to light very wide paintings although single heads of up to 120” are available from some suppliers if required.

Picture head style

The two most popular styles are the fixed or variable position LED art lights with the variable giving greatest flexibility and thus a far superior coverage. This would have a rail system in and would allow lensed LEDs to be attached as required to light any canvas size.

Arms

Properly sized arms are required to position the head at the correct height and projection for the painting.

LED drivers

Careful selection and positioning is required here to ensure the driver runs at a low temperature and doesn’t damage the artwork if attached to the frame.

Picture Light Colours & Finishes

Many options are available, and your selection should complement your artwork.

To conclude, when art is lit correctly it makes such a difference. There are many options available in the marketplace, but many do not consider all the above details. As you can see it is not easy to light a fine painting well. You need to consider how to cover the entire canvas evenly at the right intensity, not too bright, in the right colour temperature and with the highest colour rendition possible. All these points together will bring out the texture and rich colours in the artwork. Only when fine art is lit correctly can you truly fully appreciate it.

So many clients have told me that although they had looked at a painting for years, had never noticed a feature in the painting such as an animal, a facial expression, or some other hidden gem until it was lit well. This happens all the time and that is why it is so important to light your art correctly. Being able to see all those finer details within your painting will make you appreciate it even more.

You don’t have to use art lights to light your art, but if you do, make sure you consider all these points.

If I can be of further assistance in helping you here, please do make contact.

Romantic Roses

There is nothing more quintessentially English than the heady scent of roses in bloom as you wander around a garden and take in the magnificent scent and colour in summer.

Many influential gardeners through the years have shared their passion for roses and created some of our most famous gardens, including.

Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst which is still displayed in its original form today. Most famously Anne Boleyn enjoyed her courtship with Henry the V111 at Hever Castle in the beautiful and secluded rose garden. So, roses are engrained in our garden’s history.

Although roses are an ancient flower, we can still pinpoint where they originated. It’s believed that they started their roots in Central Asia, spreading through northern Europe. The cultivation of roses and different varieties started in Central Asia around 5000 years ago.

As they grew in popularity, the more they were a luxury. Cleopatra was so taken with roses; she would use them to attract suitors. Centuries after that, those with money would bathe in rose water and would sit on carpets of rose petals during meals.

Why plant a rose

Effortless and beautiful, English Roses are the highlight of any garden, flowering every summer. Their large blooms, fragrances and colour will transform your garden.

Unlike many other garden plants, roses are very tolerant. They can grow in a range of different soil types, in all conditions. They often thrive even when the conditions are extreme, although happiest in a sunny spot, many varieties cope well in the shade.

GUIDE
“Effortless and beautiful, English Roses are the highlight of any garden, flowering every summer”

Perfect for borders , roses are also ideal for smaller spaces and narrow streetside gardens, a rose hedge will provide consistent colour during the summer months. Easy to maintain, a simple line of shrub roses or a horizontally trained rambler will transform even the simplest space into a floral hedge.

How to get the most from your rose beds Room to grow

Roses like a feed and do not like too much root competition, particularly when they are young and establishing. Leave a minimum of 50cm from the base of your roses and your companion plant to make sure they do not take all the goodness away from your roses.

Perfect partners

Companion planting can be used to extend the rose season so that there is texture and colour for months on end. Use plants that flower at the same time as your roses. Summer perennials such as Phlox, Geranium, Delphinium, , Nepeta and Penstemon work well. Later in the season use, Aster, Helenium, Rudbeckia, Sedum and Salvia or add movement and interest with grasses like Miscanthus and Pennisetum.

Plant perennials in groups, not only is this visually appealing, but it also helps to keep weeds at bay. Just be sure to leave enough space for your plants to mature and grow.

Some planting also helps with pests and design layout such as :

Lavender - Helps protect roses from pests like aphids and detracts nibbling deer and rabbits from your roses.

Salvia - Attracts a wide range of pollinators and other insects, which also pollinate roses.

Foxgloves - Complements roses with its tall spires

Rose care

We recommend mulching your roses and feeding them early in the season March to early April. Feed with Rootgrow rose feed and water in well around the base of the rose. Apply a 1-2” layer of mulch, you can use a farmyard manure or wood bark. Mulch around the base of the rose, spreading it to the width of the rose canopy (leaf spread)

Deadheading

By deadheading and keeping an eye on any rust or any back spot, you will ensure your roses will bloom all summer long. To deadhead snip the rose stem close to the main stem ensuring you do not cut the main stem as you snip.

Rose range

Our Rose range includes Harkness and Chelsea award winning David Austin roses, all with beautiful colours and scents, as ramblers, climber’s, shrubs, and patio roses.

Pop along and see our selection of English grown roses, our team are on hand for any help and advice you may need.

Zoe Eaton, Creative Director of Ohpopsi, said: “If there is one thing you can guarantee about the Great British summer, it’s that sometimes we must make our own sunshine and dopamine décor is the perfect way to do so.

“Dopamine décor is about creating an interior scheme that boosts positive moods and while there are no hard and fast rules, bright colours and big, bold patterns are often associated with it.

Vault & Vine

Vault & Vine is situated in Station Square which is just a stone’s throw from the train station.

We have now been established just over 3 1/2 years. The name originated from the fact that the premises was previously Lloyds Bank hence the Vault, which we have retained and is now our private room which houses some of our prestigious wines, champagnes and cognacs.

Our cocktails are amongst the best in the South East region made from scratch using fresh ingredients.

As you will all be aware, in the last three years since we have been open, we have all been witness to some of the hardest and most unheard of times during the dreaded Covid period, something we hope will never be experienced again. Yet with the support and loyalty of our valued customers we have survived and indeed are now thriving with some excellent events coming up.

A SPOTLIGHT ON HOSPICES OF HOPE’S NEWEST CHARITY SHOP IN WESTERHAM

Westerham is on the doorstep of some of Kent’s finest landscapes -and offers a variety of historical attractions including Chartwell (the home of Winston Churchill). A WINE LOVERS’ PARADISE

Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose. Take English wines for example; in a short space of time, Britain’s verdant vineyards have become a wine lovers’ paradise – and it’s all on our doorstep.

And if you’re not quite convinced Dorset is the new Douro, with its rolling hills, riverside views and premium wineries, Langham Wine Estate – which is situated in the southern England county – were crowned Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2020, lifting the title from French champagne house, Veuve Clicquot. Wondering where to start? What would be more appropriate than Grimshaw’s current favourite, Langham Pinot Meunier 2018 (£44, Langham Wine), which they’re releasing for English Wine Week. “It’s just incredible. Very well rounded, great structure, nice fruit, some floral notes in there, and really nice and rich for such a young wine. I think it offers everything.” Cheers!
