25 November – 23 December 12–3.30pm (last entry 3.10pm). Normal admission applies. Delve into a nostalgic storybook Christmas at Chartwell. Join us this festive season as we explore the favourite storybooks of Winston Churchill’s beloved daughter, Mary, who spent an idyllic childhood in the grounds of Chartwell. Themed trees, gorgeous garlands and magical touches will transform the ground floors of the house into a cosy Christmas spectacle. “At the end of each of these busily and happily occupied days came an evening ritual - reading aloud. This was a treasured highlight of my routine.” Mary Soames A storybook Christmas Winston would often read to Mary in the evenings and she had several favourite stories. See if you can spot which storybook has inspired the Christmas decorations in each room of the house. The Sitting Room will set the scene for an immersive journey into Mary’s imagination. Books tied up with ribbon will nestle beneath a towering Christmas tree decorated with reds and golds and the fireplace will be adorned with a garland of natural foliage from the grounds. Mary’s dolls will be lined up waiting for her to read to them. As you continue into the Hallway, a whimsical birdcage will hang from the ceiling with mistletoe cascading down. You may glimpse a shadow dancing up the stairs and a hook curling around the lift. The Drawing Room will feature giant blue peonies and a sea of ticking clocks. Look out for the swish of a reptilian tail under the Christmas tree! The tree in the Library will be elegantly decorated with black baubles, while in the Kitchen, things may seem a little out of sorts with giant willow toadstools and a collection of ‘eat me’ and ‘drink me’ bottles. In the Dining Room, a luscious Roman feast will be laid out with laurel centrepieces. Come and experience

Scrumptious treats In the kitchen, our volunteer cooks will be preparing delicious bakes from the cookbook of James and Ned’s mother, Henrietta Wolfe. A Georgian family Christmas at Quebec House
Christmas in the house Weekends from 25 November–17 December, 11am–2pm. Normal admission applies. Quebec House will be beautifully decorated for Christmas in true Georgian style. This year, the decorations are inspired by General James Wolfe as a boy. Come and see how James and his brother Ned would have experienced Christmastime as children growing up at Quebec House. A roaring fire will greet you upon entering the house, the hearth lined with ivy. In the Schoolroom there will be a mini shadow puppet theatre with velvet curtains. Through this ancient form of storytelling, watch performances of Robinson Crusoe and the Greek tragedies. Children can dress up and make their own shadow puppet to take home. As you climb the stairs, the bannisters will be strewn with greenery with paper boats sailing atop the feathery waves. Imagine the boys dreaming of being out at sea as they head up to bed. The boys’ bedroom will be set for a cosy night’s sleep with their classic Georgian nightclothes, nightcaps and slippers all laid out. Hot chocolate waits in little teacups with books ready for bedtime stories.
Christmas cards Visit the Coach House to write a Georgian Christmas card using a quill pen. Close the envelope with a wax seal and pop it in our traditional post box. Stamps are on sale in the Coach House.

Owned and managed by auctioneer Rachael OsbornHoward; Curated Auctions hold sales of luxury items, jewellery, fine antiques, decorative art, paintings and sculpture. Rachael is an auctioneer and international specialist in Decorative Art, European sculpture, works of art and clocks with twenty years of experience in the industry, having worked previously for one of the major London auction houses for many years. She set up Curated Auctions in the summer of 2021, to meet the growing demand for bespoke auction services where each auction is personally curated or themed and the works of art are expertly appraised and catalogued as they would be in a London art gallery.

A Taste for Luxury Rachael Osborn-Howard, Founder and Director of Curated Auctions, tells us about their forthcoming auction on 9th November. “As Christmas approaches and the evenings draw in, many of us desire a little taste of luxury in our lives. Whether that be something historic and beautiful to brighten our homes, such as an Old Master painting, a porcelain vase lamp or antique lighting; or something wearable to glitter in the evenings such as a diamond ring, our forthcoming auction offers something for every budget and at less than retail price. Once considered the preserve of weathered antique dealers, in recent

years auctions have moved mostly online, and new technologies have allowed us to appeal to a much wider, international audience. The majority of our bidders are now private buyers and collectors who are confident to bid online and enjoy the rush of the auction process. Buyers can leave bids online before the live auction takes place, receiving email notifications every time they are outbid, so that they can increase their bid if they wish to, which can become rather addictive! There are certainly still bargains to be had, but the quality of the lots that we offer at Curated Auctions means that most would not be out of place at one of the high-end antique galleries of Mayfair, just at a quarter of the price. Bidding in the auction has never been easier, first browse the auction catalogue online, then if you prefer; you can come along to our gallery near Chislehurst to view any of the lots in person. You can leave bids online or bid live online during the auction which is live streamed over video. Or you can come and bid in the room in person, or arrange a telephone bid, or leave an absentee bid, the choice is yours! From fine antique and modern silver to exquisite jewellery, antique furniture, lamps, tableware, paintings and sculpture, we have everything for the ultimate luxurious interior.

Passionate About
TURKEYS
Even November may, for some, feel too early to be thinking about Christmas, but for Kent Turkeys, Christmas begins in June.
B
orn & reared in their natural season, their KellyBronze turkeys arrive at the family farm near Biddenden at just one day old at the beginning of June. They’re then kept warm & cosy indoors under heat lamps with clean bedding and plenty of water and chick crumb, before getting acclimatised to life outdoors. From this point, they are able to roam freely across 16 acres of Kentish pastures, rich in grass, bugs and in the fresh countryside air. Overnight, the turkeys come in to secure tunnels, safe from foxes and other predators, where they have straw bedding, water and specially made feed in constant and plentiful supply. But why is this all so important? Tony Fleck, owner of Kent Turkeys, has been a KellyBronze farmer for over 20 years and is one of the only, and certainly the largest, KellyBronze farmer in Kent, rearing up to 1,200 birds each year. This means his birds are reared to strict standards, ensuring not only the highest welfare but also meat which has unrivalled taste. By hatching the turkeys in their

natural season and allowing them to grow slowly and to full maturity, in hand with being free range, the turkeys lay down a natural layer of fat. When cooked, this runs through the meat, creating a moist and easy to carve turkey with beautifully textured meat, which is packed full of flavour and with a delicious natural gravy too. Great - just what you’re after for one of the most anticipated meals of the year. But surely there’s a catch? A tricky cooking method to follow that means hours in the kitchen? Absolutely not! Every KellyBronze turkey from Kent Turkeys comes with full cooking instructions and a complimentary thermometer, making cooking a show-stopping turkey simple. And, even better, the cooking time is a fraction of a traditional turkey, meaning not only is it easy to cook a Kent Turkeys KellyBronze turkey, but that you’ll be able to join in with the festivities and enjoy a stress-free Christmas, as it should be. Plus, with options including whole turkeys, crowns and breast roasts as well as legs, thighs, wings, sausages, mince and pies, there’s something to suit all sizes of celebrations. Orders are now open, with collection points across Kent including from Woolpack Corner Farm itself. Visit www.kentturkeys.co.uk to find out more and place your order.

Treat your tree with kindness! Your Christmas tree will last longer if in a room that is below 18C try to avoid positioning your tree near a radiator or a draft. As soon as you get your tree home remove the netting and shake it out allowing the branches to relax and start to drop. Saw off 2cm from the bottom of the trunk and place in a bucket of water. The water will allow the tree to rehydrate. Once in position fill up the reservoir in your stand and top it up daily with cold water, this will help to reduce needle drop. NOVEMBER 2023 47

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.
“They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger”
T
he world has never been a more dangerous place in modern times, feeling vulnerable and let down by police and government security services to protect them, more people are turning to private security for their property and personal protection. Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the face of police cutbacks, an increase in crime, and global terrorism, close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners. So, what is close protection and what does it
24 88 N MM B EBRE R 2 0 2230 2 3 NOOVVE E
entail? Close protection more commonly referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection, is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted, a general local threat, perceived or inherited threat and risk. Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger. Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day fighting toe-to-toe with enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying potential threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, drivers, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. PERFECT SHOT Women have been shooting in dresses for hundreds of years, but shooting-specific tailoring for us has never been a thing - we’ve only ever been given the Gentlemen’s section in a smaller size. As someone from BASC once told me so succinctly - they just “shrink it and pink it.” Austuin does things wildly differently. Preventing Loneliness Through Connections Cafe Loneliness is a common issue that many older people face in Bromley, and it can have a negative impact on mental and physical health. However, play, art and discussion can be powerful tools in preventing and alleviating feelings of loneliness.
R
adfield Home Care Bromley have partnered with Quest Soul Theatre C.I.C for a monthly Connections Cafe on the last Tuesday of each month at Community House, Bromley from 10.30 am -12.30 pm. The Cafe is Dementia Friendly, free to all including cake and tea! The first Cafe was held on 26th September 2023. Here are some ways in which play, art and discussion can help combat loneliness: Play and art activities can bring people together, fostering a sense of community and connection. By participating in group activities, individuals can meet like-minded people, make new friends, and form supportive relationships. This has also recently been done through the Let’s Talk Better event organised by Zeenat Noorani and Darren Beale from the Bromley Buzz. Engaging in creative activities such as painting, drawing, or writing can provide an outlet for self-expression and help individuals process their emotions. This can be particularly helpful for those experiencing, as it allows them to explore their feelings and find solace in their own creativity. This is one of the main themes of the Connections Cafe, recently run by Bev McGarey who is a Creative Arts & Mindfulness Leader from Woodland Mindfulness. Play and art activities can provide opportunities for social interaction and engagement with others. Joining groups or classes focused on creative pursuits can create a sense of belonging and facilitate connections with others who share similar interests. Play and art can have therapeutic benefits,

particularly in the context of art therapy or play therapy. These therapeutic approaches use creative activities to help individuals explore their emotions, gain insight, and develop coping strategies. This can be especially beneficial for individuals struggling with loneliness, as it provides a safe and supportive environment to express and work through their feelings. Mercedes Yearly, Director of Quest Soul Theatre C.I.C emphasises this through the monthly events that she organises at the Connections Cafe. The next free event at the Connections Cafe will be held on Tuesday 28th November 10.30am-12.30pm where there will be a mini performance held by a Drama Production company, no need to book! Please contact Radfield Home Care Bromley on 0208 064 2324 for further information.

A Food-First
APPROACH
Contrary to popular belief, nutrient requirements increase as we age, so eating nourishing meals becomes even more important.
A
ccording to the latest scientific evidence, older individuals may benefit from additional protein and higher levels of select nutrients such as calcium and Vitamin D. Meeting those needs can be especially challenging if we consider that appetite tends to decrease as we age. KYN adopts a food-first approach, focusing on nutrient density to provide nourishing meals that may replenish nutrient stores. It’s a more mindful approach designed to improve the wellbeing of residents living in their care. KYN has worked with BANT registered Nutritionist Eva Humphries and top chef Tristan Welch to design nourishing menus at its home, KYN BICKLEY. The meals are designed to be revitalising and stimulating for older people in particular, with quality and nutrition at the heart. This includes prioritising nutrients over calories and focusing on well-balanced meals made from high-quality, fresh ingredients. Eva and Tristian share some of the top things they considered when designing the menu for KYN.
72 OCTOBER 2023
Key ingredients Protein plays a crucial role in maintaining muscle mass, a variable for frailty which becomes more pertinent as we age. Consequently, it’s essential to incorporate high-quality protein sources, including eggs, poultry, beans and pulses. Game meats like venison are great options in late autumn and winter thanks to their superior nutrient profiles and seasonal abundance. KYN prioritises it at every meal, even making it into desserts via clever ingredient choices. Nostalgia through food The menu is designed with nostalgia in mind, working with familiar favourites that may evoke happy memories and provide comfort. Traditional dishes such as shepherd’s pie and fish and chips are elevated via cooking techniques and adjusted to include additional nutrients.
“The menu is designed with nostalgia in mind, working with familiar favourites that may evoke happy memories and provide comfort”
Dementia-specific diet Dementia is a complex condition that requires extra attention and a much more carefully considered approach to food. In its early stages, those living with dementia may forget whether or not they have eaten, which can often lead to an over-reliance on snacks. KYN factored in an allday dining menu to ensure nourishing meals are always available. In addition, snacks are balanced to contain nutrients, not just empty calories. This is especially pertinent since sugar cravings may contribute to the prevalence of snacking. he need for part or all of a building to be renovated can be obvious. Outdated fittings and tired décor can cry out to be renewed and replaced to make spaces welcoming and functional again. What is often less obvious are the practicalities to be addressed to get all that done. Tony Cheeseman, the brains behind IQ Property Services, has seen it all, from big, complex renovations to smaller projects. And he’s got some down-to-earth advice for anyone thinking about refurbishing or even building a new home: “Start with your eyes wide open. Do your homework, research thoroughly, and plan things out. Or just give me a shout, and I’ll walk you through what you need to think about.” “My advice would depend on the size and location of the project, as well as the nature of the building. Two recent examples of our diversity are: a recent three-year renovation of a substantial Grade II* listed property. It involved not just the usual project management challenges, but also compliance with the planning laws and regulations of Historic England. Working with a Historic Planning Consultant is an added complexity to the many specialist services and trades we normally coordinate. The other involved a simple extension and repurposing of a kitchen on a tight budget, as well as re-configuring a whole downstairs. In both cases we used our project management skills of planning, coordination and team building to bring together successful partnerships to meet the client’s vision and expectations. With over 40 years of experience IQ are highly respected in their field. Tony Cheeseman’s expertise was recognized when he was invited to contribute to a prominent report on the construction industry

that pass the test of time
Step into a world of timeless elegance and design innovation as we explore the enchanting realm of iconic 20th-century pendant lights. These luminous forms not only brighten the home but also serve as unforgettable symbols of an era marked by artistic expression and avant-garde creativity. technology, pendants have come to encompass both functionality and the understanding of light’s power to alter the environment, as well as be a visual focus point. Designers explored innovative ways to manipulate incandescence and electricity, experimenting with materials, textures, and finishes, evolving pendants not only as sources of luminosity but also as expressions of artistry. From the ornate gas lamps of the 19th century to the 20th century’s streamlined mid-century forms, each era has left its distinctive mark on pendant light legacy with unforgettable, standout concepts. These iconic pendants have become timeless symbols of innovation, embodying the spirit of their respective epochs while continuing to inspire and captivate with their enduring beauty and functional brilliance. Whether enduring classics that transcend eras or symbolic pieces of the periods in which they were conceived, our curated selection of iconic pendant lighting is a journey through the evolution of design and illumination. Each piece is a testament to the creative genius of its time, ensuring that it will never go out of style. Together they form a gallery of fixtures that not only brighten the home but also narrate the tapestry of design history.

hen darkness draws in, it’s lighting that transforms our spaces into homes: cosy sanctuaries we look forward to all day and bask in into the evening. For decades, the centre-of-the-room pendant has been ‘the main light’, ‘the big light’ – and while floor, table and wall lighting has had its moment (and is vital to light-layering), focus is now back on what’s hanging from the ceiling. The pendant light is unique as a design object. Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees, presenting an unusual creative challenge and opportunity. Simultaneously projecting and directing as well as filtering light and protecting eyes from glare, pendants must combine the decorative and the sculptural with the practical, setting the room’s ambiance with its soft, bright, warm, cool, focused or dispersed glow as well as being aesthetically pleasing in its own right. STILNOVO
“Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees”
Sputnik Suspension Lamp Designed in 1957, Stilnovo’s Sputnik Suspension Lamp is a striking embodiment of mid-century modernism that has endured as a bold and timeless icon. Inspired – unsurprisingly – by the space age and the launch of the first artificial satellite, the pendant is composed of celestial-style radiating arms, each tipped with a glowing bulb, capturing the era’s fascination with all things cosmic. Now a cherished symbol of progressive 20th century design, it infuses spaces with a charming sense of the retro-futuristic.
LOUIS POULSEN PH 5 Pendant Light Created by revered Danish architect and designer
Poul Henningsen in 1958, the Louis Poulsen PH 5 Pendant Light revolutionised the way we perceive and use light. A lasting symbol of eternal elegance and lighting innovation, the PH5 combines functional brilliance with aesthetic beauty, its arrangement of layered, curved shades ensuring even illumination while minimising glare, its recognisable silhouette placing it in the design history book as shining example of Danish creative excellence.
VERPAN Fun 11DM Pendant Light Verner Panton First produced in 1964 by avant-garde Danish design visionary Verner Panton, the Verpan 11DM Pendant Light transcends convention with its mesmeric creativity. Dripping with cascading mother of pearl discs, the pendant evokes a sense of otherworldly allure, which is heightened when the discs flutter in the breeze. The playful yet elegant design dances between the realms of sculpture and lighting, casting an entrancing, ethereal glow when illuminated, and announcing the piece an emblem of the mid-century modern design era’s spirit of experimentation.
GUBI Multi-Lite Pendant Light Devised by innovative Danish designer Louis Weisdorf in 1972, Gubi’s Multi-Lite Pendant
Light is all about customisation. Its two shades can be independently rotated to adjust the direction and spread of the light to create different effects and atmospheres within a room – upwards for a soft, ambient glow, down for a more focused beam, or artistically arranged simply to look good. Seamlessly blending form and function, the inimitable pendant is a symbol of mid-century modern design’s timelessness and adaptability.
FLOS Viscontea Pendant Light Created in 1960 by the celebrated Italian design brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Flos Viscontea Pendant Light attains its iconic status through a harmonious fusion of art and illumination. Inspired by the cocoon of the silkworm, it casts a soft and ethereal lighting effect that diffuses warm and gentle illumination, its organic aesthetic giving it the feel of a contemporary design despite its grand age.
&TRADITION Utzon JU1 Pendant Light Developed in 1947 by ground-breaking Danish architect (and Sydney Opera House designer) Jørn Utzon, the &Tradition Utzon JU1 Pendant Light encapsulates the eternal essence of Danish design. Drawing inspiration from the elegant simplicity of nature, its distinctive, sculptural shape exudes a sense of beauty and tranquillity. Diffusing soft, ambient light while serving as a captivating focal point, it transcends eras and zietgeist with its graceful aesthetic an effortless blend of art and utility.
FRITZ HANSEN Kaiser idell Pendant Light Conceived by pioneering German designer Christian Dell in 1931, Fritz Hansen’s Kaiser Idell pendant is a masterpiece of Modernist design that embodies the elegance of pure simplicity. A testament to the Bauhaus principle of form following function, its renowned domed shade casts focused and glare-free illumination with easy minimalism. Its status as an icon of design excellence endures, a testament to the influence of Bauhaus design principles. chaplins.co.uk NE OM V EBMEBRE R2 0220 32 3 8 11 2 3 NOV

Here, Mr Buck tells us about his experience with the team at Schmidt Sevenoaks. How did you hear about Schmidt? My wife and I had walked past the showroom in Sevenoaks a number of times and had always been impressed by the quality and design of the show kitchens. What did you love about the Schmidt product? The high level of quality and the abundance of choice regarding colours and configurations. How did you find the whole process from start to finish? The process of working with Ben and his team was enjoyable from the initial design meetings to the final sign off of the fully installed kitchen.

What was the difference between Schmidt and other showrooms you have visited? The attentive level of service received when entering the showroom and the ultra modern designs of the show kitchen’s really stood out for us. What was the impression of customer service, designer you worked with and the team in Schmidt Sevenoaks? We thoroughly enjoyed working with Ben and his team and all of our requests were throughly explored and accommodated where possible. The customer service we received was second to none. Anything else you would like to add in your own words? We were extremely happy with each and every stage of the process and Ben has always been very quick to solve any minor challenges during the installation journey. Where certain design tweaks needed to be made, Ben always prioritised and solved everything to our complete satisfaction. It’s just a shame we can’t afford to build another house and do it all again!! Although we are now working with Schmidt again to design and supply dressing room furniture. Hats off to Ben and all of the team at Schmidt Sevenoaks.

For two years, I was Apprentice of The Year. It was a gold standard qualification. I still work to those exacting high-quality standards today, and I expect that from the people I work with. I went on to gain City and Guilds qualifications, including, as I have a passion for nature, one in garden design. “My team and I pride ourselves on caring for properties, using traditional methods and the latest tools and materials. Inside and out, in your garden or your home, whether it be renovations, maintaining doors, fixtures, fittings, walls, ceilings or landscaping, we will care for your home as if it is our own. Fully DBS checked and insured, we are often trusted with keys by our clients, and we will even let the cat in and out! “Recently, we worked on a 160-year-old Lambeth property. The staircase was poorly maintained, with jaded underlay, sticking to the treads, and it was tired and squeaking! Careful restoration brought this beautiful feature back to its former glory. Homeowners Emma and John said, ‘Alan refurbished our Victorian staircase, which will make a huge difference to the look from our hallway. Alan is a craftsman, and we were very impressed with the techniques he used and the quality of his workmanship. We were delighted to have him work in our house and we highly recommend him.’ “My experience and skill set means that my team and I can work on historic and listed buildings. The Future of Architecture An Interview with Atelier de Linde Architects
P
lanning and design is at the heart of what we do best, so what better excuse to interview Tara de Linde and Angie Pool, Directors of award winning, Atelier de Linde Architects, a RIBA chartered practice based in Tunbridge Wells. Sited have worked closely with Atelier de Linde Architects for over five years, when it comes to planning, they have got an impressive, over 90% success rate for first time planning submissions being granted. Atelier de Linde Architects specialise in residential, barn conversions, redevelopment and education. In this interview we will explore the minds and motivations behind two very talented, inventive and successful Architects, we discuss industry trends, their perspective on the future of architecture and more. What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities in the field of architecture today? Angie: “The sustainability agenda that is now key to all architectural projects, is leading the conversation on all current feasibilities within our practice. This is something that is particularly close to our hearts and aligns with our principles as designers and architects. We have committed ourselves to the RIBA 2030 climate challenge for this reason and are passionate about playing our part in reducing uk greenhouse gas emissions and addressing the global crisis”. Discuss industry trends and perspective on the future of architecture Tara: “Biophilia, connecting architecture with nature and optimising our homes and redevelopments for comfortable living. As the planet heats up, we need to consider our lifestyles as well as good design linking into air quality, solar gain, air purification. Plus, age old tricks like cross ventilation and incorporating water into our designs for natural cooling”. Tell us about a project where you had to adapt to changing clients demands or unexpected circumstances. Angie: “Every project, it’s one of the reasons we love our job!” What has been your favourite SITED project and why? Angie: “Stephen & I have known each other since 2018 and we have always had a great working relationship. My favourite SJD project would have to be the scheme we have worked on for a private client in Itchingfield. It was a site that has multiple barns that can be converted to a residential scheme. The brief was broad enough to design in whatever style I wanted and it allowed me to use my imagination…The result being a modern industrial barn style that will deliver 3 stunning 3500 sqft family homes with equestrian facilities on the estate.” SJD Projects Ltd, 78 St Johns Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 9PH M: 07739 514350 T: 01892 579937 E: steve@sjd-projects.com www.sjd-projects.com

beautiful roof can be the crowning glory of a house, and a secure, watertight roof protects everything underneath it. Restoring or replacing a roof requires safe hands, such as those of Hakka Group, a highly skilled and experienced company frequently trusted by the owners of homes of distinction or special heritage, some of them well-known individuals. Hakka Group works across London and the Home Counties, led by its Managing Director Daniel Powell, who took charge after serving for 12 years in the Parachute Regiment where he learned to excel in both leadership and management under extreme pressure. “Most of all, we like to work on roofs of character”, says Daniel, “That means that we often source and use special materials, and our people use just the right tools and techniques. Now, I use the skills I picked up there to benefit our family business. That means a focus on outcomes, processes, and expertise. We put our clients at the centre of any project and give them a first-rate experience. That includes listening to their needs at all stages, explaining options on materials, style, and finish, and being a safe pair of hands. “We source and work with the finest materials, such as lead, slate, and handmade clay tiles. We have worked on projects from individual, Victorian-era dwellings, to whole estates. For example, a project to renew the lead and slate on several Crown Estate properties in Regents Park.” Dan’s company has earned testimonials such as this, “HAKKA Group are wonderful, a tremendous band of brothers. Dan is a superlative leader of men… He does all he can to make working with him and his team a great experience…. Upgrade Your Home FOR COZY COMFORT W
The Benefits of Replacing Your Windows This Winter
ith the nights drawing in and energy bills starting to creep up, you might find yourself thinking about ways to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient – saving on your energy bill and stopping those pesky draughts. It’s a well-trodden path that one of the best ways to achieve this is by upgrading your windows and doors. As well as improving your home aesthetically, there are numerous benefits and here are a few you might want to think about. Reducing Your Energy Bills Replacing your old windows and doors with energy-efficient glazing can lead to significant savings on your energy bills. Modern double glazing is designed to minimize heat loss, helping your home maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. By keeping the cold out and warmth in, your heating system can operate more efficiently, ultimately reducing your energy costs. A Warm, Cozy Home All Round Old, draughty windows can create discomfort by allowing cold air to infiltrate your living spaces. Upgrading to double glazing can eliminate draughts, ensuring your home remains warm and cozy throughout the winter. Just think, no more needing to wrap yourself in a blanket whilst relaxing with a takeaway in front of the Saturday night TV! Improved Security Those long, dark nights can lead to increased worries around security and modern windows and doors come with robust security features, giving you that all important peace of mind. These features include things such as secure locking mechanisms, shatter-resistant glass, and reinforced frames, all of which significantly improve the safety and security of your home. 98 NOVEMBER 2023
You may also find that your insurance premium comes in a little cheaper as an added bonus. Always Choose a Competent, FENSA Registered Business When it comes to window and door replacement, you need to make sure you select a professional, FENSA registered business as you can be assured about: Expertise: FENSA registered businesses are experienced and skilled in window and door installations, providing the expertise necessary to meet your specific needs. Quality Assurance: These companies offer warranties on their work, ensuring your investment is protected and maintaining peace of mind. Compliance: FENSA registered companies understand and adhere to local building regulations, making your project hassle-free and compliant. Cost-Efficiency: While quality work often comes at a cost, FENSA registered companies offer competitive rates, ensuring you get the best value for your investment.

HALE ELECTRICS LTD Calvin Hale created Hale Electrics nearly 20 years ago and it became a limited company around 10 years ago.
T
he idea behind Hale Electrics Ltd was to provide a high-quality service for homeowners. Calvin had seen a big decline in the service homeowners were getting from tradesman and decided to break the mould with a professional, high standard of service from highly trained and qualified electricians. Calvin gave them a brand which would be easily recognised, a uniform, the latest tools and sign written vans so our clients would be filled with confidence the moment Hale Electrics arrived at the door. Calvin changed the way emergency tradesman charged by scrapping ‘call out’ charges, parking charges and many other charges that come our way working in London, they only charge for the time they are working for you. Calvin found being totally transparent about our charges was a great way to install trust and shows they have nothing to hide i.e no hidden charges. We offer a no obligation site survey for any works and a free estimate. After a humble start nearly 20 years ago in an estate car and a few tools, Calvin is proud to say they have a small fleet of vehicles, a team of fantastic engineers

and office staff which makes the experience smooth and enjoyable for any customer. This is gratefully relayed in our 500+ 5-star reviews. Hale Electrics are nowhere near to reaching their goals as they set out to dive even deeper in the world of renewable energy and energy saving solutions. As electric vehicle charge point specialists and LED lighting upgrade experts they have seen first-hand the savings in energy and money customers are experiencing through their work. Solar panel installations, battery storage and eco heating solutions are all on the horizon for next year. We work with high quality garden landscapers and can design the LED lighting for any project. As always, Hale Electrics love to serve their local clients with the latest fuse board upgrades, state of the art LED installations and upgrades, EICR’s and practically anything that has a wire!

M
ore than 70% of UK homeowners still have a traditional mineral felt flat roof. Over time extremes of temperature can result in this cracking and leaking. Once the felt starts to fail, water damage often goes unnoticed resulting in severe damage and inconvenience. What to look out for: If you see blisters on the roof surface or cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights you need to act fast. Insurance companies will no longer accept liability for external or internal damage caused by leaking flat roofs that are more than ten years old.
