Your heart is precious, and so are your memories

Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could.

So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.

Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.

Empty spaces

Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.

“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.

‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands.

Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on tr ying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone.

This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.

Slowing the tide is just the beginning

The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year par ticipants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither

A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.

These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.

“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.”

This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.

Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia.

Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.*

Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference.

* The research referenced was also supported by the UK Dementia Research Institute.

For these unique, live illustrated talks, Lucy will present one most elusive and enigmatic figures of the twentieth century. Agatha went surfing in Hawaii, she loved fast cars, and she was intrigued by the new science of psychology, which helped her through devastating mental illness. So why –despite all the evidence to the contrary – did she present herself as a retiring Edwardian lady of leisure?

Early Years at Bishop Challoner

At Bishop Challoner, children embark on their Early Years journey at the age of 3, benefitting from a nurturing nursery team. The experienced workforce, including specialised teachers, expose them to subjects like French, Music, and PE, enhancing their readiness for school while promoting independence and resilience. The emphasis on diverse teaching styles and exposure to different staff enriches their early educational experience.

Traditionally, Early Years education, like nursing, was seen as a profession for women, discouraging men from pursuing it due to misconceptions about its nature being “unmanly”. Contrary to this belief, working in Early Years demands dynamic, energetic individuals prepared to go the extra mile for engaging and spontaneous interactions with young children. It is a challenging and demanding role, not for the faint-hearted.

Bishop Challoner School values diversity within its Junior School team, recognising the importance of providing male role models to young learners. Exposure to men involved in educational activities helps break gender stereotypes and fosters early interests in various pursuits like reading, singing, and creative expression. Noys and girls benefit from seeing men in nurturing roles, shaping their expectations of men in society.

A diverse workforce in education is vital, ensuring a well-rounded approach to teaching that mirrors the community’s gender balance and fosters diverse interaction styles. Early Years education should prioritise representation and diversity, moving beyond traditional stereotypes and incorporating varied interests like sports to resonate with both genders.

In our school’s lush surroundings, nursery children have the chance to engage with our Forest School, an enchanting realm of outdoor exploration. Forest School offers our little ones a fun experience in discovering the wonders of the natural world. This educational approach to outdoor play embraces safety amidst woodlands, encouraging children to grasp the essence of the environment throughout every weather and season. Within this setting, they are empowered to take on challenges, exercise their creativity, and collaborate with peers. The Forest School nurtures their resilience, shaping them into resourceful explorers steering their own educational journey.

Saturday · 7 October · 7:30pm · £19

Voted Comedians’ Comedian of The Year 2021/2022, Jo Caulfield is quite simply one of the most consistently funny and creative comics in the country. Hot on the heels of her sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run, Here Comes Trouble is packed with brilliant routines and fantastically embarrassing stories. This is Jo Caulfield doing what she does best: pure Stand-Up. Släpstick Presents: Schërzo

Sunday · 22 October · 7:30pm · £22

The award-winning and internationally renowned Släpstick brings their new show to Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells with their unique brand of mischief: Chaplin meets Tchaikovsky, Groucho Marx does Mozart. Schërzo sees a highbrow classical concert glissando into a bacchanal of mishaps and absurdity. Neither bewigged composer nor magnum opus is safe from buffoonery in this clownish concerto from Spirit of the Fringe Award winner Släpstick. Behold as a marble bust of Beethoven comes alive and challenges his fellow sculptures to a yodeling battle-royale; meanwhile Schubert’s Erlkönig laments his dying son while prancing on a trampoline. Even the ghost of George Gershwin takes a turn as he accompanies an entire symphony orchestra, played by five musicians and led by an inflatable conductor.

Thursday · 26 October · 7:30pm · £18.50

There are many reasons to be excited about new Glasgow-based five-piece Ímar – not least a line-up featuring current and former members of Mànran, Mec Lir, RURA and Talisk, who have a staggering trophy cabinet. The band’s combined commonality and diversity of background and influences fuels Ímar’s unmistakable synergy, centered on the overlapping cultural heritage between Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way

Despite the importance of having a will, 65% of 45-54 year olds in the UK* are living without one. Here we explain the advantages of making a will and why it is beneficial to seek legal advice when doing so.

Why make a will?

Largely, we find our clients want to make a will in order to look after those they leave behind. This can be by minimising the inheritance tax due, finding and avoiding possible areas of family conflict, appointing guardians or making financial provision for their children.

Why else are wills important?

Without one:

• you won’t have someone you trust dealing with your estate after your death

• the law decides who receives your assets

• the law will not make provision for your partner if you are cohabiting

• you can’t leave gifts/monies to your chosen beneficiaries.

Is making a will unpleasant?

We find clients often have a natural dislike of discussing their own deaths. However, the conversation with a solicitor is likely to be positive: focusing on how you can best enhance the lives of those you leave behind. Conversations are generally warm and friendly – not morbid.

Why should I use a solicitor to make a will?

• they are not only highly trained/experienced in will writing, they have a broad understanding of other law; so you will receive bespoke advice for your needs

• they have insurance and are regulated to conduct their activities in the interests of the consumer and provide some form of compensation if things go wrong

• If you use a solicitor, they will usually store the original for you free of charge.

Why Thomas Dunton?

We have been helping the local community for over 40 years and are renowned for being professional, approachable and sensitive when handling our clients’ future.

We strive to ensure you understand the complexities of writing a will and the potential pitfalls that may occur after death. The result? Reassurance and peace of mind that the things that matter most will be dealt with just as you had wanted.

Join us for a free legal talk on planning for your future at Orpington Library on Thursday 2 November. Scan for more information and to register. Or contact Thomas Dunton Solicitors LLP on 01689 822554 or at enquiry@thomasdunton.co.uk

Studio based Paint Correction treatments ensures winter protection sustaining your car’s paintwork and value. This process involves removing surface imperfections using a machine polishing technique. These protective layers help safeguard your vehicle’s value preserving its condition throughout the winter season and beyond. With Ceramic Coating and PPF, your car remains resilient to snow, salt, road debris and other damaging elements ensuring your car maintains its worth and appearance for years to come. During summer, PPF acts as an invisible armour, guarding against stone chips, tree sap and insect stains which are prevalent during road trips. Ceramic Coating offers UV resistance, protection against acidic bird stains and

Beyond enhancing your vehicle’s sleek appearance, window tinting serves various purposes including heat reduction, safeguarding against interior fading, providing UV protection, minimising glare and driver fatigue, enhancing privacy and bolstering security. Calliper respray help prevent corrosion and rust which can, in turn, contribute to the overall safety of your vehicle. Westminster Security LONDON WATCH THEFTS

to street gangs…there are spotters at luxury retailers, high-end bars, and restaurants preying on vulnerable watch owners. The obvious deterrent is to leave your watch at home in a safe, or even wear a replica and freely hand it over if attacked. However, if you insist on wearing your luxury watch you must realise you are making yourself a target.”

Unfortunately, London has become the epicentre of a watch theft epidemic where violent and often armed assailants are mugging unsuspecting luxury watch owners in the streets for their expensive timepieces. In 2022 there were over 6,000 reported watch thefts in London with an average value of £9,000, around £54m worth stolen last year alone. And 2023 is shaping up to be much worse.

So, what can you do to protect yourself in these testing times? We spoke to John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd, a world-leading personal protection company based in central London. John said: “Sadly, this is the world we now live in. Watch theft is more lucrative than other crimes and there is little deterrent

John advised: “Don’t get too intoxicated, don’t trust a stranger who is suddenly taking a lot of interest in befriending you, don’t walk alone, and always remain aware of your surroundings. If followed, run for help if you can, if attacked hand over your watch it is not worth dying for. Make sure your watch is insured and have it valued each year.”

How can Westminster Security help? “We provide discreet close protection operatives (bodyguards) to accompany or shadow our clients on nights out, watching their backs and those around them; for us, it is second nature spotting undesirables up to no good. We have thwarted many potential situations, and not always directly for our clients but their friends, colleagues, and other venue patrons.”

How much does a bodyguard cost? “Some clients spend several hundred or thousands on a bottle of champagne on a night out, we are not that expensive but if you can afford a luxury lifestyle it is worth paying for peace of mind”.

House of Balance

House of Balance began with an idea to create a Reformer Pilates studio like no other. We had a vision and we were determined to bring it to life! Reformer Pilates is a passion of the House of Balance team and we wanted to create a studio that not only provided all the facilities to provide high-quality classes, but also a space where our members could feel that they can escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life and, find balance. We were determined to find a premises that fit our vision, and whilst we had looked at a number of them, when the current space of House of Balance became available, we found our home. We saw Chislehurst as a prime location not only for our members, but also to be part of a community that we know takes pride in its area.

The studio has been open for a month now and we are overwhelmed by how many members have joined and taken part in our classes. We currently have 8 instructors at House of Balance who are all qualified in Reformer Pilates and bring a wide variety of skills and techniques to our classes. There are five types of classes for our members: Basic Balance, which is for those who are new to Reformer Pilates; Build Balance, for our members who are ready to take their Reformer skills to the next level; Beyond Balance, our most challenging class for our members who want to push the boundaries of Reformer Pilates; Bounce Balance, a class that incorporates a jumpboard and is our favourite type of cardio workout; and finally, Boogie Balance, our version of a Friday night Reformer Pilates party! All are welcome at House of Balance, as we want as many people as possible to experience the benefits of Reformer Pilates, which includes increasing flexibility, building strength, toning muscle, improving posture and correcting muscle imbalances (plus many more!).

Cognitive Stimulation: Engaging in creative activities and drama can help exercise and stimulate cognitive functions, improving memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities in elderly individuals with or without dementia.

Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a creative project, learning a new skill, or performing in a drama production can boost self-confidence and provide a sense of achievement for elderly people. This contributes to an increased sense of purpose, self-worth, and overall well-being.

Improved Communication: Creative activities bypass language barriers and allow individuals with dementia to communicate and connect with others effectively. It provides an alternative means of expression and helps maintain social connections even when verbal communication is impaired.

Reduction in Behavioural Symptoms: Engaging in creative and dramabased interventions has been shown to reduce behavioural symptoms common in dementia, such as anxiety, agitation, and aggression. It can help redirect energy and focus towards positive and meaningful activities.

Enhanced Well-being and Quality of Life: Creative expression and drama foster positive emotions, enhance self-esteem, and contribute to a higher overall quality of life for elderly individuals, including those with dementia. It brings joy, fulfilment, and a sense of belonging.

Memory Preservation: Creative activities, especially those involving storytelling or reminiscing, can help preserve memories and personal narratives. This stimulates memory recall and maintains a connection to one’s personal history and identity.

In summary, creativity and drama bring cognitive, emotional, social, and therapeutic benefits to elderly individuals, including those with dementia. Such activities provide avenues for self-expression, engagement, and improved overall well-being, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.

The showroom’s very easy to get to. Clapham Junction train station is just a short walk away, and if you’re driving, there’s ample parking on the surrounding streets. We aim to make it accessible and inviting for all.”

Inviting is the word because it’s such a welcoming moment talking to Al Bruce again. We first met five years ago when Olive & Barr was launching, and it’s been such a pleasure to see the company grow and watch how customers feel, well, part of a family that cares. Al Bruce is a man who looks as if he’s stepped straight from a Danish design catalogue: smart black jumper, cool, black-rimmed glasses, neatly cropped hair. I recall thinking there was something different about him back then compared to other kitchen people I’d talked to. Something calmer, more caring.

Olive & Barr have additional showrooms located in Malvern as well as the newly established Elkestone showroom, situated in the picturesque Cotswolds of Gloucestershire. The handmade kitchen company believe in employing local artisans in their UK workshop, with each team member

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, a calm place where we cook, socialise and connect as family and friends. A place to unwind. To breathe.  And so, to London, where, amidst the bustling urban landscape, shaker kitchen company Olive & Barr has found its sanctuary. A sunlit showroom where warmth meets artisan craftsmanship, stepping into this oasis of creativity, visitors are not just welcomed; they are embraced by an atmosphere of hand-crafted cabinetry that resonates with the very essence of home.

highly skilled in their craft, dedicated to the company ethos of excellence, with rigorous quality assurance and environmentally focussed care. Sustainability is not just a buzzword for Olive & Barr; it’s a guiding principle. “Sustainability is a core principle at Olive & Barr,” Al tells me. “We responsibly source our materials and ensure our manufacturing is UK-based. It’s not just about crafting beautiful kitchens; it’s about doing so in a way that respects our environment and supports the future. Sustainability is not just an option; it’s a responsibility.” In addition, Al is passionate about giving back to communities most in need, and is deeply involved in funding a carpentry school in Malawi - a place he called home for

eight years - merging his love for craftsmanship with a commitment to education and community development.

For Olive & Barr, this responsibility extends to the level of service it provides. “As well as our free design service,” Al tells me, each Olive & Barrinstalled kitchen having a 15-year guarantee, “we also offer an on-site kitchen design service. We can come to any home within 130 miles of all three

For Al Bruce, Olive & Barr is not just a business; it’s a shared journey. “What keeps me going every day,” Al concludes with genuine emotion, “is the growth and fulfilment of our designers, the unwavering enthusiasm of our workshop staff, the satisfaction of our operations team when they conquer challenges, the joy of our installers and painters when they deliver dream kitchens - and the happiness of our clients when they stand in their new kitchen for the first time.”

There’s no doubt: the kitchen is the heart of the home - especially when it’s a lovingly crafted, artisan-designed Olive & Barr kitchen.

in transport, and much more.

To homeowners and businesses, though, when electricity is used to create light, it can become an art form, lending a beauty to any space that could otherwise be dark or dull.

“From the many shapes of modern lightbulb available, some with beautiful filaments and wonderfully shaped glass, to ingenious installations in offices and shops, we live in a remarkable time for lighting. Having the right lighting is an investment that lasts”, says Calvin Hale, Director of Hale Electrics, a company that has been trading for over 20 years. “A home can be filled with antiques, artworks, and designer furniture, but without the right lighting it is all duller, and these important pieces can’t have the visual impact they were acquired for.

“It is a joy for my team and I to help homeowners to select, place, and install inspired lighting that does their homes and contents justice. There are so many options now! Uplighters, downlighters, transition lighting, mood lighting, chandeliers, LED lighting, and garden lighting from tiny plant pot lights to epic illuminations!

“Our expertise and experience means that we can think of things that the home owner might overlook. Is the lighting choice right for the room? Will it cast light over the required area as intended? Are there options to save energy? Is the ceiling high, meaning more powerful illumination is needed, or that the light fitting should be brought down or moved from its current level? Would

adding lights in other locations enhance a space?

As I said in an earlier issue of this magazine, ‘there are fabulous options for lighting styles that can be literally breath-taking! The latest technologies offer a level of timed and remote control that earlier generations couldn’t have imagined.’ I meant every word. It’s exciting being an electrician in this era and seeing how people react when they first use their new lights.”

Hale Electrics offer free site surveys and estimates. Why not give them a no-obligation call on 0203 0867631 so they can suggest how you can make your home or business premises shine?

Elevating Life Through Thoughtful Design

In a world where architecture often feels impersonal, there’s a place that resonates with a different philosophy: “Our life and work quality are intrinsically tied to the spaces we inhabit.” This isn’t just a statement; it’s the driving force behind Studio 212 Ltd.

Imagine walking into a space where every corner, every nook, speaks to you. Where the concept design isn’t just about aesthetics but about life improvement. This is the magic Studio 212 Ltd. weaves into every project, be it a new build, an extension and renovation, or even the delicate task of revamping a listed building in a conservation area.

Daniel and Jolanta Cajzer, the visionaries behind Studio 212 Ltd., have journeyed through the vast landscapes of international architectural practices. Their experiences have culminated in a unique approach: blending the grandeur of global architectural marvels with a personal touch. Their mission? To ensure every client feels not just heard, but deeply valued and involved.

The beauty of Studio 212 Ltd. lies in its adaptability. Whether it’s reimagining the house layout to improve functionality or crafting a stateof-the-art office design, the team dives deep into the essence of each project. They understand that

every space, whether personal or professional, plays a pivotal role in shaping emotions, productivity, and overall life quality.

One of their standout projects involved a house in the prestigious Farnborough Park. The challenge? An extension and renovation that would seamlessly blend the old with the new. Jolanta’s meticulous attention to detail shone through as she oversaw the interior design, ensuring the quality and precision of every finish. The result was a space that not only looked magnificent but also resonated deeply with the homeowners. Their testimonial says it all: “Studio 212 transformed our house into a masterpiece. are unparalleled.” The project was delivered in cooperation with Arcadd Ltd.

Another feather in their cap is the South Hampstead Top Floor Flat project. Featured in a renowned design magazine, this project showcased Studio 212 Ltd.’s prowess in merging concept design with practicality. The renovated mid-century flat, complete with interior design, is a testament to the firm’s commitment to enhancing spaces and lives. But what truly sets Studio 212 Ltd. apart is their dedication to the ethos of life improvement. They believe in the power of spaces to elevate our daily experiences. By emphasizing healthy, long-lasting materials, they craft environments that are not only beautiful but also promote well-being. Their designs, rooted in the idea of minimalism, champion the concept of decluttering, both physically and mentally. This approach, they believe, fosters clarity of thought and a sense of tranquility.

In a world where spaces often feel impersonal and disconnected, Studio 212 Ltd. is a beacon of hope. They remind us that with the right planning, vision, and a touch of creativity, our surroundings can be transformed into sanctuaries of peace and productivity.

So, if you’re on the lookout for a partner to embark on a transformative journey with, Studio 212 Ltd. awaits. Upside down maisonette has the wow factor

Many people aren’t aware that a loft conversion can be carried out on maisonettes but as John Allen from Econoloft explains, providing it is done well, a loft conversion can transform this type of property.

“A maisonette can be surprisingly spacious,” he said. “However, a large part of the footprint of the home is going to waste, namely the loft!”

FROM ONE FLOOR TO TWO!

One family from Bromley lived in a maisonette property which comprised a front room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms across one floor. They needed more space and and although they did look at moving home to get additional room, they soon realised it would be a very

expensive move.

Instead, they had an Econoloft loft conversion which transformed their unused loft into a luxurious, spacious living space comprising a kitchen, dining area and lounge. The customers stamped their personality on the space with white walls, spotlights, wooden floors and contemporary furnishings to create a modern and welcoming family area.

The original floor of the maisonette has also been developed and features three bedrooms, a new bathroom and a utility room giving the family two floors of living space to enjoy.

John said: “Like many of our customers this Bromley family could not believe the space they had in the attic which had been wasted for so many years. Now they love their new home which has provided enough space for them to grow at a fraction of the cost of moving home.”

Econoloft only builds loft conversions and with 40 years’ experience you are assured peace of mind. Unlock the potential of your loft.

ECONOLOFT EXPERT TIP

Although you don’t need planning permission for most loft conversions, you may need it on a flat or maisonette, particularly if you intend to extend or alter the roof space. You should also check whether you own the roof space and leaseholders may need permission.

Use a Project Manager and build with confidence

Knowing what you’re doing in life is hard. So hard that we put children through schools, typically for over a decade, to prepare them for life. Even then, there is so much more to learn and to adapt to. That is why life coaches exist, to provide an expert helping hand.

The same is true in the world of property. Knowing what you’re doing when buying and selling a home is one of the most stressful experiences we can encounter. So too when building a new home, refurbishing one, or adding an extension. Many people learn the hard way, as they juggle quotes, legislation, services, and trades, each with their own demands and timetables. Getting this wrong can be costly.

An expert Project Manager can be either a guide or an emergency service to people building or re-building a home. A guide, because in the often complex process of building or changing a property, guidance can be crucial. An emergency service, because without that guidance from the

start, things can easily come unstuck and then need to be expertly managed and resolved.

Tony Cheeseman, Founder and Director of IQ Property Services, has been making dream homes come true for over forty years. He is well aware of the numerous pitfalls in building projects, “We recently had a new client who came to us as while building a new home she received a demand from a Council for over £30,000 under the Community Infrastructure Levy. It is possible to be made exempt from this tax if you are building your own home, but the process hadn’t been followed to the letter. Often, people come to us when things go wrong. In an ideal world, we want to talk to them before that happens. Working with professionals such as Quantity Surveyors, structural engineers and architects, an experienced Project Manager takes on the day to day load of co-ordination and problem solving. We plan. We co-ordinate. We manage. We know the things our clients don’t know that they even need to know! We always act in the clients’ best interests, looking out for what might go wrong.”

THE CHAPLINS SHELF-HELP GUIDE: 7 styling secrets to boost your bookcase

From the floating to the freestanding, the room dividing to the flush-againstthe-wall, despite their light framework and generally slimline designs, shelving systems and bookcases are hugely impactful pieces of furniture, well worth putting some time and thought into.

Modern homes have become less about pure good looks and more about the art of telling stories and creating personal narratives – now’s the time to gather the objects that mean the most to you and put them where you can feel their positivity every day. New shelves are a great opportunity to browse the house and compose a new collection combining the items you find within.

There are no rules regarding what you put on display. Large, small, old, new, useful, decorative, colourful, muted, hand crafted, machined… bring it all together and start from there.

The first thing to do, whether you’re working with a box-fresh new piece of storage or refreshing something existing, is to start from scratch: empty it. There’s no other way. Once you have a blank slate, then the decisions begin.

What’s the shelf for? Practical storage, or a beautiful, decorative addition to the room? Is it about aesthetics, or expression? What type of atmosphere do you want to create?

Set the mood layer by layer, ledge by ledge with our professional styling methods and strategies to create a contemporary shelving display, and artfully showcase everything from treasured collections and works of art to plants, books and beyond.

MIX MATERIALS AND TEXTURES

Melding different textures and materials on the shelf top, from paper to ceramics, wood, glass and metal, adds a pleasing element of contrast to a space – either place objects on the shelves that juxtapose each other to create interest, or have the whole shelving system differing from the room itself for larger impact and to make the shelf a standout design feature. Texture – the more tactile the better – also brings a warm and cosy feel, and

placing high contrast surfaces side by side (say, a high gloss finish next to a rough ceramic) ups visual appeal and intrigue.

INTRODUCE ILLUMINATION

Using shelving with built-in lighting, or including a free-standing light on a shelf has many more pros other than simply increasing visibility. Lighting adds depth and dimension, cultivating visual interest while emphasizing the threedimensional nature of the structure. As well as creating ambiance – warm tones equal cosiness, cool coloured bulbs are energetic. Lights can also draw focus to certain pieces so they stand out, and make collections looks even more impressive – and when turned off, built-in lighting becomes invisible while lamps become beautiful sculptures.

STRIKE A BALANCE

When putting your shelving arrangement together, it’s important to bear balance and proportion

HOUSE & GARDEN 92 OCTOBER 2023

in mind – carefully considering the layout and placement of items will make it easier for your collection to harmonise. For a modern, diverse feel, play with scale and emphasize variety (rather than grouping similar styles together), varying the heights, sizes, shapes and materials on each level and across the width of every shelf – aim for casual asymmetry. Generally, larger objects are happiest on the lower section of the shelves, with the lighter and smaller pieces up top – but don’t be afraid to break this rule every now and then for a freer and more contemporary aesthetic.

MASTER THE MINIMALIST MINDSET

A sparsely populated shelf speaks of curation and confidence, and decorating with a small number of favourite objects turns all the attention to them as refined focal points. While it’s tempting to fill a shelf with beloved items (or unconsciously add to the collection here and there), going for a reduced, minimalist selection lets each piece standout and shine, turning the shelves into a chic, composed selection. Each object has enough space to breathe, and becomes more meaningful and respected by the room afforded to it.

LET CREATIVITY FLOW

When are shelves not shelves? When they’re a mini, in-house, private art gallery. Shelving is the place for creative collections – from paintings, prints and photography to sculptures and beautiful, beguiling objets, shelving offers the opportunity for organised, easy curation and display. An art-filled shelf not only prompts meaningful conversations, but is an outlet for self-expression, the display reflecting your personal style, individuality and making the space truly unique – and bringing a daily dose of delight.

TELL YOUR TALE

Shelving is the ideal space to showcase who you are through the objects that narrate your life. As well as visibly sharing your story, personality, interests and experiences with visitors, placing personal mementoes on show has a deeper effect too; being surrounded by memories evokes nostalgia and positive emotions, creating an ambiance that’s emotionally rich, uplifting and positive. Sentimental items are reminders of experiences, people and achievements – keeping them visible preserves those memories, fostering a home environment that feels warm and that you’re strongly connected to.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT

We all get a little bored with our decor, and shelving’s inherent flexibility means that it’s as easy as lifting-up and placing-down to refresh a wall and the atmosphere of the whole room. Objects can be rotated, swapped out or updated in an instant. Taste changed? New season? Things getting cluttered? It’s no problem on the shelf, the controlled spacing so naturally lending itself to neatness and organisation. Having an ever-evolving collection on show keeps the display dynamic unexpected and endlessly appealing, keeps the space fresh and aligns the area with who you are and how you want to express yourself.

Why it’s a Smart Financial Move INVESTING IN LAND:

Land investment offers a unique set of advantages that can contribute to long-term financial stability and growth.

In a world of investments, diversification is key to building a secure financial portfolio. In this blog we will explore the reasons why investing in land is a smart financial move.

Tangible Asset

Land is a tangible asset and it’s one of the few investments that you can actually see and touch.  Land doesn’t rely on the performance of a company or market sentiment, its value is determined by its location, size and potential use. This value tends to appreciate over time, making land a solid long-term investment.

Potential for Passive Income

You can generate passive income from your land investment, for example, you can lease it for agricultural purposes or develop it for residential or commercial use. This potential for passive income can provide a steady cash flow over time.

Increasing Demand

Growing populations and the need for agricultural land all contribute to the rising demand for land. As the demand continues, the value of land tends to increase, making it a favourable investment choice.

Portfolio Diversification

Adding land to your investment portfolio is a good strategy for reducing risk. Compared to the stock market, land investments can remain relatively stable, offering a hedge against economic downturns.

Tax Advantages

Land investments often come with attractive tax benefits. Depending on your location and use of the land, you may be eligible for tax reductions, incentives or exemptions.

Hedge Against Inflation

Land tends to appreciate in value at a rate that exceeds inflation. This means that your investment in land can protect your asset’s against inflation, preserving your wealth and purchasing power.

Long-Term Growth Potential

Land investment is typically a long-term strategy. While it may not offer the rapid returns of some investments, its steady and consistent growth potential can lead to substantial wealth over time. Patience is often rewarded in the world of land investment.

Investing in land is a smart financial move for those looking diversify their investment portfolios, preserve wealth and benefit from a tangible asset with intrinsic value. It does require careful research and the professional team at Sited can help and assist you in the whole process. A DESIGN ICON

With its sculptural, coherent design, the Loewe iconic merges into a unique symbiosis of television and soundbar. Made of Syno-Stone, it transforms the home into more than just a room to live in: The Loewe iconic combines excellent TV and audio technology with exceptional design and the highest technical functionality.

The latest TV from electronics giant Loewe has something none of the other best TVs can offer: it’s made from stone. Syno-stone, which is a solid material that looks rather like concrete and is made from locally sourced recycled materials. When the TV comes to the end of its life, the Syno-stone can be recycled to become a new TV. It’s the circle of life, but with rock instead of lions.

A Truly Iconic OLED TV

Loewe describes the design as “an eye-catching concrete aesthetic”. It’s very striking in Clay White, and the Graphite Grey version looks like it should have some monkeys discovering fire and tools in front of it. But the TV isn’t just about style. The specs are pretty good too.

There’s a 360-watt integrated soundbar for starters, with support for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and other key standards, and the OLED panel is available in 55 or 65 inches with 4K, HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. Loewe says its proprietary algorithms deliver “a natural, harmonious picture”.

Loewe Technology is a premium German brand established a century ago in 1923.

The Iconic is available in two sizes, 55-inch (£6,999) and 65-inch (£8,499).

Spectacular Specimens!

From the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to gardens up and down the country, every garden has a place for a specimen plant; whether that is a tree, shrub, or a living wall, they can create instant cover and impact to your gardens.

These plants take years to grow and are pruned into shape so they are ready to plant out into your gardens. Most will need only a little care, with a light prune to keep them in shape on their pleaches or espaliers.

If you need any help on what to choose as your statement plant, then book an appointment with our tree expert Liam. Or if you have a large project that you need help with email info@coblandsgardencentre.co.uk for an appointment.

The Scent of Success

The story of DLS Candles started during one of the COVID lockdowns of 2020. This experience gave me a different perspective, time to think about new ideas, to challenge myself and put these ideas into practise. I have always had a creative spark, and wanted to channel this into a beautiful product I could make at home – DLS Candles was born!

After much experimenting with types of wax, scents, and mixtures of ingredients, I feel I have created a range of wonderful soy scented candles that reflect the care and attention I give when making them. Working with the many various ingredients indulged my creative side – for instance there are a number of different types of wax that can be used – I chose soy wax as it has clean and slow burning properties, meaning that you have more time to enjoy your candle!

Many scents draw inspiration from my garden –a real haven for me during lockdown - especially my love of roses. DLS Candles is a very small family business – I make the candles, my eldest son Harvey designed my lovely logo and packaging and my youngest son Oliver is always on hand for photographs that feature on my wonderful new website. I also enjoy the full support of my husband Gavin, as I take over the kitchen with waxes, scents and jars!

I feel that I have come a long way in such a short period of time with my business. This year I was privileged to exhibit at the RHS Hampton Court flower show, along with a collaboration with Great Brand Exchange, holding a pop-up event for a week at Boots in Bluewater.  I also trade at local craft markets, charity events and wedding fairs –my candles make lovely wedding favours, and I am able to provide bespoke scents and labels for your special day.

So, what next? My aim is to grow further awareness of my brand with the ultimate aim at some point in the future of being as well-known as other leading candle brands on the high street!

London Road Furniture

Formerly the Polhill Arms in Halstead the building was painstakingly restored by the family who own Farningham Oak - long established Kent quality furniture retailers who started their original cottage industry working from an old farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors.

“We used to let the customers wander all over our house - except for a couple of rooms and buy anything they wanted and take it away” said Peter one of the Directors - it gave us a great insight into how good furniture is constructed and taught us all about the correct proportions and style which are really important skills and cannot be learned overnight. This helps us tremendously when customers ask our advice as mistakes can be time consuming and expensive for them. We strive to pass on all our accumulated knowledge to any new members of staff we employ to enhance your shopping experience. It’s always a real pleasure meeting new customers and old who continue to support us.

Situated on the A225 London Road - access is easy and parking is plentiful in the large car park adjacent to the shop.

The furniture and accessories are carefully selected with both modern and classic tastes catered for.  You will be pleased with the varied and carefully selected stock and assured of great quality. Very competitive pricing has always very important to us and good service comes naturally after over 40 years in the business.

We supply tables, chairs, cabinetry, sofas, bedroom furniture, interesting occasional pieces, custom built pieces and anything else we like the look of. We offer a professional delivery service and over the years have covered the whole of the UK including much shipping overseas.

Will your flat roof keep you warm and dry this winter?

Are you concerned about potential leaks or costly water damage?

More than 70% of UK homeowners still have a traditional mineral felt flat roof. Over time extremes of temperature can result in this cracking and leaking. Once the felt starts to fail, water damage often goes unnoticed resulting in severe damage and inconvenience.

What

to look out for:

If you see blisters on the roof surface or cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights you need to act fast.

Insurance companies will no longer accept liability for external or internal damage caused by leaking flat roofs that are more than ten years old. High-Tech offer professional roof replacement services using only the highest quality materials along with some of the most advanced flat roof technology available.

All flat roofs installed by us adhere to building regulations, are dimensionally stable and incorporate an anti-slip membrane strong enough to walk on.

✔ Maintenance free

✔ Will not blister or crack

✔ Fully resistant to moss and algae
