A PERFECT UNION?

hen it comes to getting married and sharing your life with someone, it’s often the more mundane matters which can be overlooked says Grant Buchanan, Financial Planning Partner at Scrutton Bland. I’m not talking about what flowers to have at the wedding (although I accept this may not be mundane to some!) but more serious matters such as money. Once the honeymoon is over and day-to-day life resumes, the realities of sharing your finances can quickly become problematic if the parameters are not clear from the start. It’s therefore a very good idea, before you get married, to have ‘the money conversation’. ere are some definite financial advantages to getting married and bringing your financial assets together. Joint incomes can put you in a stronger financial position and can allow you more flexibility over sharing your bills and regular expenses. When it comes to saving and investing there also is more flexibility, with two sets of tax allowances to play with, which can in some cases be shared between spouses. However, money means diﬀerent things to people. Some people are very careful with their money and others spend it like there’s no tomorrow. It is important to share your financial views and expectations with your partner to avoid arguments and potential problems down the line. Being honest about your debts is an important

starting point. Around one in five people don’t tell their partner the full extent of their debts, according to one survey by the Debt Advisory Service. Worse still, 7% of those surveyed said they thought it was better not to share the true extent of their debts until after the honeymoon! If you become a joint holder on an account you may find your credit score will be adversely aﬀected. And if you’re added to your spouse’s account on which they have debts, you’ll become jointly liable for paying oﬀ those debts, and if defaulted you may be liable for the entire debt, even for the amount your spouse was carrying before you were on the account. In choosing to get married you will no doubt have hopes and dreams for the future such as starting a family or travelling the world. However, if you don’t create a financial plan and a realistic strategy to achieve these goals, your dreams may never become a reality. s the summer months roll in, it’s time to relax and enjoy the shade of the ancient trees in Epping Forest. On the days when the heat of summer feels so oppressive, the cool glades of London’s largest green space provides the perfect place for respite. e summer months also bring many opportunities for picnicking. ere are some popular spots for enjoying al fresco dining, including Wanstead Park, Chingford Plain, the Pillow Mounds in High Beach, Hollow Pond as well as some quieter places such as Strawberry Pond in Loughton and Yates’ Meadow in Chingford. Picnickers are reminded that fires and barbecues are not permitted in Epping Forest, for safety reasons. Please help us to conserve this unique, ancient woodland by observing these rules. Another way to make the most of the great British summertime is to take in an Open Air eatre performance. In July and August, the grounds of e Temple, in Wanstead Park, will become the wonderful setting for two performances by acclaimed theatre group, Illyria. Wanstead Park, which was acquired by the City of London Corporation and became part of Epping Forest in 1880, was once the grounds of the grand Wanstead House. In its heyday, the grounds of this famous House included two amphitheatres, and elaborate gothic amusements were held in front of the Grotto and the fortifications. Indeed, Epping Forest has a strong 1 0 JUNE 2018

heritage when it comes to theatre, with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream first performed at Copped Hall in 1594. Proudly continuing this theatrical association, the following Open Air eatre performances will take place in the grounds of e Temple, Wanstead Park: e Pirates of Penzance, by Gilbert and Sullivan, Wednesday 18 July, gates open at 6pm, performance starts at 7pm. e Adventures of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting, Sunday 12 August, gates open at 1pm, performance starts at 2pm. So, give the wicker basket a dust down, roll up a picnic blanket, put the bubbly in to chill and, yes, pack a brolly (just in case the British weather lets us down) and get outside to enjoy some great entertainment in the stunning setting of Epping Forest. DONKEY DERBY state Agent Butler & Stag is this year’s proud sponsor of the eydon Bois Scout Group 31st annual Donkey Derby, taking place on e Green on Sunday 8th July 12 noon until 4.30pm. Managing Director Neil Leahy is seen here with his children Florie, Frankie and Brian the donkey. Neil, who lives in eydon Bois, is a community champion who has given priority to helping local causes since the business set up shop in eydon Bois last June. Together with two colleagues, Neil took on the fearsome ree Peaks Challenge last year to raise funds for the Playground Appeal for eydon. He said “e Donkey Derby highlights the true spirit of eydon Bois and our wonderful green. It’s a fun event for everyone and raises much needed funds for the local Scouts and Guides groups and other village charities. We are delighted to be new sponsors for this their 31st year.” e event has become synonymous with the village with more than 4,000 people crowding onto the green eager to bet on and watch the jockeys, all aged between 10 and 15, get their donkeys round the course without falling oﬀ. ere are seven races, with seven donkeys in each. ere will also be a bouncy castle, big wheel, swing boats and other rides plus all the fun and games including smash the crocks, tennis serve challenge, welly wanging, and a golf putting challenge. e Donkey Derby committee, who organise

the event, works hard to keep the event true to its roots with more old-fashioned games and supports local businesses and charities who want stalls. Chair Nik O'Flynn said: "We are very excited about this year's event which is a big part of the eydon calendar." e event was first dreamed up for the Scouts by Peter Simmance, to raise money for a new hut. His brainwave was to reinstate the old donkey races at Birch Hall 100 years before. Organised by Gerald Buxton, he was keen to see that the local donkeys were used to work and give rides to the public in the forest, were well treated. He gave five shillings to the owners of every donkey that passed a veterinary inspection. He brought in strict rules banning whipping and kicking - sometimes the riders carried their donkeys over the finish line in their desperation to win! Now the donkeys are all ridden by children with riding experience. Anyone wishing to be a jockey contact Michael Simpson on 07725 042415. (Jockeys need to be under nine stone (57kg). ere will be parking but the Green is easily accessible to eydon Bois underground just 200 metres away. n

SUNDAY, 17TH JUNE Fathers are great and Father’s Day is their special day.

ost people celebrate Father’s Day but very few know the origins. Allegedly the tradition started around 100 years ago from America, however there are two diﬀerent accounts. Some believe the holiday was founded in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908. ere had been a mine explosion in Monogah and sadly 360 men died of which 200 of them were fathers. Grace Golden Clayton visited her local pastor and suggested a special day be set aside to honour fathers. e other version is again from America. After hearing a sermon celebrating Mother’s Day in 1910, Sonora Dodd wondered why there wasn’t a parallel date to celebrate fathers. So with whatever version is correct – looking at an imminent Father’s Day - how do thank your father and/or grandfather?...

e proverbial socks and pants from M&S is somewhat lame so hopefully, this list will inspire some creativity for that special ank You: a) Making a video which includes photographs from the father’s life. Plus some personal commentary from children, family members. b) Does he enjoy the cinema or theatre? Book some tickets and include a pre/post dinner. But don’t’ delay – good tickets for top West End shows really need to be booked months in advance. c) If he likes a tipple, some appropriate and engraved glasses. Or a special mug with accompanying specialist beverage. Something personal to show eﬀort and thought. d) If the weather looks good, a picnic at one of our beautiful park/forest areas such as Wanstead or Epping. e) Perhaps a personal hamper made up of all his favourite goodies… If none of the above inspire, excite or feel relevant, there’s always the back-up plan - despite it being lame…. f) Underwear from M&S! Something is better than nothing – just about… And you could always argue it’s the thought that counts. Albeit this is the ‘Get Out of Jail Card’ for those who didn’t invest too much time or eﬀort. But men always need pants and socks… At the very least, you should make your father smile and tell him that you love and respect him. Fathers are very important – sons need a loving role model and daughters need their devoted dad. n

t’s so easy to be constantly busy. Emails, voicemail, texts, WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram. All these features are accessible on our phones and there’s always a beep, to alert us of a new message or notification. People are even becoming addicted to their phones whether for business, personal, social media or simply because we have this incessant desire to know what’s happening within a nanosecond. I recently read that children are beginning to hate their parents’ mobiles and see it as a constant distraction from them. Sadly, we all know somebody (if not us) who will even take a call when engaged in conversation with somebody else. At the very least, we’ll check who’s calling before making the decision to take or ignore. To combat my own and probable excessive use of the phone, I have developed a very personal routine. Every night when I go to bed, I - Take Five… Five minutes to think about the day and with one objective, to think about what made me happy, smile or gave some purpose (aside work) to the day. It may be speaking or seeing my children, a telephone call with a

friend, watching a particularly enjoyable programme that oﬀered either intellectual enlightenment or entertainment. By the way, One Strange Rock is probably one of the most interesting series I have ever seen. Hosted by Will Smith and directed by Darren Aronofsky, it is truly outstanding. I know it’s a cliché but it is true, life is too short. And the precious time that seems infinite whilst living it, is really just a breath. We slip through the decades in what feels like months rather than years, and before you know it, things that were taken for granted are no longer applicable or appropriate. Or even our capability to still participate in what we used to enjoy… Taking five minutes every day is an intimate reflection on recent events, to really explore what was special and enjoy it properly in case the experience was rushed, interrupted or even temporarily forgotten. ere are very few joys which can compare to feeling content with what you have and without always searching or needing more. n

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN DEADLINE 8TH JULY 2018

or local residents in North Weald, ornwood and Hastingwood – July 8th is a very important date for the diary. It’s the deadline for their Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire. Epping Forest District Council are planning to build 2,272 homes in these areas which is essential for growth. However the Neighbourhood Plan is the voice of the local residents and can be considered alongside the Council’s Local Plan if agreed at a Referendum. e Neighbourhood Plan can help to: • Influence the type, style and design of properties being developed. • Protect the local area, heritage and the environment. • Identify and protect valued local green spaces.

• Identify the infrastructure needed for the present and future. • Establish the future provision for healthcare and community facilities. e North Weald Basset Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire will shortly be distributed via a pack which can be collected from North Weald Library or downloaded from the website – www.northwealdbassettplan.org. If you are resident in these villages, you can get involved. Understanding how to empower through intellect and emotion whilst driving need as compared to want; finding that perfect balance between text and images. Michelle Harris (Star Copywriting Limited) and Angie Phillips (A.N.G. Design Consultancy) discuss the power balance, how it works and some of those special ingredients. Michelle: A captivating headline grabs attention and should make you stop and think… Angie: Design is about creating immediate impact using both images and text, one without the other is weak and uninspiring. People make an almost instantaneous decision as to whether to invest their time to read or look further. Making the right impact is essential to stop the reader in their tracks. Michelle: A balance of design and text works on multiple levels. e design should be visually captivating, the text should grab the attention and create an emotion. In today’s busy environment – it’s essential to be fascinating in an instant. Angie: It’s all about impression and persuasion, using strong images and great text that supports and enhances the overall message. Arranging these elements on a page is a balancing act – achieving the right emphasis and position to highlight the right words and using the right images to add to the readers’ understanding. Michelle: e text has a purpose and is strategically aligned. ere needs to be an arresting opening, enough embellishment to

engage the readers’ interest which leads into a powerful call to action. en the impact of the design invigorates the imagination… Angie: We react to images instantly – whether that’s because they appeal or shock but it’s the text that leads us further forward into a decision. Images should add something not repeat the message. Concise, well written and informative text is essential so working with a top copywriter is a dream for a designer. Michelle: Unfortunately, a lot of people think that if they write a lot about themselves, it should suﬃce but the realities are that the text is a seduction. It should entice the reader (target audience) to want to call the business and discuss their requirements. Too much can potentially be boring, not enough will fail to impact. Rather than being a literary exercise, copywriting is more about psychology; how and why people buy and based what’s ‘in it for them’… Angie: In the same way people think the bigger their logo the better impact they will have but unless you are a famous brand, your logo means very little to a customer who has never heard of you. It comes back to the words! How you solve their problems, how the customer will feel and benefit. e design has to successfully display these words in a readable and logical style, the right weight and size to create the emphasis that is required and its purpose. It’s all about the call to action and getting the target audience to emotionally and intellectually react to what they have seen and read. en ultimately to make that call to discuss a service, business transaction or to make a purchase. n

The zip wire begins 35 meters above the ground with thrill-seekers making their 225-metre flight across the London skyline over Archbishop’s Park near Waterloo, taking in views of the London Eye and Parliament. New for this year, Zip Now London will have 3 lines so you can experience the thrill of flying along with your friends at the same time. The triple-wire rig allows riders to experience breathtaking views at speed, adrenaline guaranteed. For 16-weeks the zip wire will let people soar above Archbishop’s Park with later opening times so there is plenty of opportunity to fly by wire after a stressful day in the office. Zip Now London will be open from midday to 8.30pm every day from May 22nd to early September. The event sold out quickly last year with

over 30,000 riders taking the leap, so booking early is highly recommended and 2018 will be your last chance to fly by wire. As if flying through London’s skyline wasnt enough, Zip Now London offers a new and exhilarating free-fall experience. The ‘Mega Drop’ gives riders a heart-in-the-mouth freefall before being lowered safely down to earth. The entire Zip Now experience lasts 40 minutes which includes a thorough safety briefing. Founder Barry Shaverin says: “Last year’s event was so successful we wanted to return for one more year, and have worked hard to make the event fresh for riders that are paying us a repeat visit. easons Art Class is throwing open its doors this month to new students who are interested in teasing out their creative skills. Tutor Adelaine Frank has established a new concept in weekly adult part-time creative art courses for 14 weeks, run throughout the year. Classes start again on Tuesday 24th April at Chingford’s Arts Commune plus an Evening Class there that also features life drawing and portraiture. On Wednesday 25th April students are welcome to the morning class at LifeWorks at the back of Loughton Methodist Church. Designed for absolute beginners or improvers

the courses oﬀer an easy step-by-step guide to draw, paint and create. It’s ‘hands on’ with lots of support and demonstrations while learning new skills. e class has the added benefit of tutor Jim Jack, a sculptor and local artist. Both tutors provide one-to-one advice and all the help needed to develop individual artistic skills. Joining the team is Kelly Frank, Adelaine’s talented daughter who brings a new edge and challenge to those wanting to take their art to a new level and a change of pace. Kelly competed in this year’s Sky Arts TV series Portrait Painter of the Year competition with the final last month. In her heat Kelly’s had to paint actress Michaela Coel. She said “It was an exciting and challenging experience. e competition tests your ability to work under pressure. I had to make decisions quickly and being timed was a first for me. I learnt a lot and it was also great to be surrounded by other budding artists and watch other methods of painting unfold.” n

Secondly I address the nose to mouth lines, I think of this as the supporting scaﬀold, mid face rejuvenation and restoring the balance of the ‘golden triangle’ will automatically make a face look more youthful. However, one of the most troublesome and ageing features for a person are the ‘dreaded jowls’ or heavy jawline. Personally I like to use a sturdy dermal filler along the jawline to lift the jowls as well as lifting the mandible vertically next to the ear area. It gives a natural shaping and definition to the lower face and can help make the neck look less saggy. I tend to choose diﬀerent types of dermal or volumising fillers, in accordance with age, fat loss and skin integrity.

ince Dr Bawa weaved his magic on Abi Turner a month ago she is feeling very happy with her looks and new-found confidence. Tell us first about the company. How did it start? Mark Wilkinson Furniture was founded in 1981 when Mark was commissioned to create his first fitted kitchen. That kitchen went on to become an icon of modern design and with it a new ‘English Country Style’ was born. Mark’s early work transformed what had been considered a functional utility space into a room with style, grace and personality. This was effectively

produce a full brief, design and imagery the client absolutely loves and that best serves their needs before moving on to the next stage.

Kitchens are your main focus, but not your only work. Can you outline the scope of your projects? A handcrafted Mark Wilkinson kitchen is still what our clients request most frequently, however we are seeing increased interest in speciality multi-rooms. At their core, Mark Wilkinson clients tend to have a certain approach in common – they are looking for absolute luxury combined with character. Increasingly, projects encompass boot and utility rooms. We have seen a huge rise in bespoke, highquality walk-in dressing rooms too.

A clever kitchen offers clever storage. What are your most successful features? Storage is a hugely important element of any wellperforming kitchen and Mark Wilkinson Furniture is able to create any combination needed. From a myriad of wine racks and carousels and stepped shelves in wood, marble or glass, to butler’s pantries and sculleries, designs that are made to look beautiful and function perfectly are at the centre of the way we craft our kitchens. We often work on bespoke solutions made to fit exactly what a client needs. The pull-out Nespresso drawer that features in our Newlyn kitchen is a perfect example – it is designed to store individual capsules with minimum fuss.

What kinds of thing are you working on at the moment? Our client confidentiality clause is strict, so I can’t name names! A bespoke project in Saint Tropez for a successful entrepreneur particularly stands out in my mind at the moment. It is an absolutely stunning beach front property; the pinnacle of carefully considered luxury. It beautifully demonstrates the new paired back use of bold colours, dark paint finishes and timber stains fused with nickel and antiqued bronze hardware throughout. There is a perception that the Mark Wilkinson brand is very classic, but the reality is we do both with equal vigour: modern spaces and those with a more ‘heritage’ feel. Often, we fuse both. Clients still come to us for the true craft that makes up Mark Wilkinson’s DNA, but our team increasingly realises that with a contemporary final feel. We are seeing a strong trend in personalisation too. There are three new kitchen ranges. Can you describe them? Our most recent additions are the Portobello and Newlyn styles. Portobello is inspired by its ever-vibrant West London namesake, embracing clean lines and elegance with clever storage solutions and flexible workspaces. The Newlyn is stylish and contemporary with pared-back lines and natural materials that work perfectly for today’s modern lifestyles. Stand-out features include the waterfall worktop design and the latest baking and breakfast cabinetry. How does kitchen design work - where do you start when planning a project? Clients will regularly visit our showrooms with mood boards and other inspirational imagery. They often have an idea of what they do and do not like, and a general feel or look they hope to achieve - however vague at this early stage. It is then our job to work really closely with the client to better understand their needs – the kitchen must look the way they want it to, but it must also work the way they need it to. What have been your most unusual or difficult commissions? Every project offers unique challenges, like a recent commission for a totally black kitchen! The craft element of your business is strong. Can you tell us about that? At Mark Wilkinson ‘handcraft’ is our heritage, it is the essence of the brand. We do not churn out large numbers of factory-line furniture and I hope that is something about us that is well-known now. Each Mark Wilkinson bespoke piece is handcrafted at our Wiltshire workshop with meticulous attention to quality and detail, from the finest timbers and materials – we create furniture alchemy.
