It consists of flower-rich hay meadows beside the meandering River Roding. In parts wet and elsewhere dry, it is bounded by thick hedgerows, together with a small amount of scrub, secondary woodland and tree plantation. e meadows came to exist under an ancient system of management, which included grazing and hay cutting. Essex Wildlife Trust mimics this system in their management, using traditional breeds of cattle and continuing with a summer hay cut. is method ensures that wildlife-rich water meadows, which are rare and in decline elsewhere in the county, are preserved. ere is an abundance of beautiful wild flowers in spring and summer, including Southern Marsh Orchid, Devil's-Bit Scabious, Ragged Robin, Marsh Marigold and Yellow Watercress, all of which flourish. e meadows are perfect habitat for several species of butterfly, too, including skippers, blues and Meadow Brown. e meadows are a haven for birds. In spring and summer, Sedge Warblers breed in the riverside scrub. Both Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat frequent the hedgerows, which are such a distinctive part of the British countryside and vitally important for wildlife, too – not just for breeding but as shelter and a food source. ere is up to ten miles of hedgerow on the reserve, much of which is also managed traditionally, by laying and coppicing. Late summer sees flocks of finches, such as Goldfinch, on the seed heads of thistle and teasel. e river is a reliable site for Kingfisher and Grey Heron. Look for Little Egret and Little Grebe, too. Kestrel, Buzzard and Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers can be found elsewhere on the reserve. • Roding Valley Meadows were declared a local nature reserve in 1986. From 1938 to 1964, part of the reserve RAF Chigwell; a number of features from the former site remain. ese include the balloon rotundas, from which barrage balloons were launched to protect North London against air raids in World War II, and concrete tracks. Within the reserve is green lane, which runs from near the river to the M11 Motorway – it is part of the ancient route from Epping Forest to Romford Market. • e reserve is accessible at all times. ere is a one mile linear surfaced track that is adapted to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters. Dogs are allowed if kept under effective control; please keep dogs on leads when there is livestock on the reserve. Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and Debden tube stations (on the Central Line) are all within a few minutes’ walk of the reserve. Many bus services run to the neighbouring tube stations. e main car park is next to the David Lloyd Tennis Centre off Roding Lane, with additional parking by the reserve office in the Grange Farm Pavilion, off Chigwell High Road. • e Trust runs an educational programme from the Grange Farm Centre – IG7 6DP, www.grangefarmcentre.co.uk – where there are facilities to receive school groups. Indoor and outdoor classrooms are available, as well as a vast array of wildlife activities. n

A FANTASTIC “SECRET” DAY OUT IN ESSEX
I
n the luscious Essex countryside, lies a secret, kept hidden away from public knowledge for the last 40 years. At Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker you can witness the three lives of the bunker, starting with its role as an RAF ROTOR Station, then a brief period as a civil defence centre through to its most recent life as a Regional Government HQ. Built in great secrecy in 1952 this bunker was kept from the knowledge of the local villagers and the contractors who built it, right up to 1992 when it was brought back by the Parrish family: who owned the land before the government took it under the compulsory purchase act back in the 1950s. As you enter the unsuspecting bungalow, you begin to take a trip down the 120 yard tunnel, past the 1 tonne blast doors, through the 10 foot thick reinforced concrete walls, you will then arrive in the heart of the bunker. Now over 100 feet underground you are able to take a tour around the vast bunker and see where up to 600 people would have lived, worked and helped to run the country in the event of a nuclear disaster. One of the museum curators James Godfrey said “e audio guided tour takes about an hour, it takes you back in time and should bring back many memories for anyone who lived through the cold war era”. Now named the Bunkerland Adventure Park, it is a hub of activity all through the year with Rope Runners: an award winning high ropes park adventure Centre, suitable for ages 6 and up. ey also offer the opportunity to try your hands at

Up to six guests use team work and initiative to escape within Photography ©Mike Parrish sixty minutes. It’s a real life escape room. e last survivors: A live, action packed zombie apocalypse horror experience based at the bunker. You can see if you and a group of survivors have what it takes to make it out alive? Nuclear races: Featuring gritty, tough obstacle races over varied, undulating terrain including man-made obstacles and awesome natural features. Expect big obstacles, highly organised events and copious amounts of mud. A multi award winning OCR, with many events held throughout the year. With so much going on here at Bunkerland Adventure Park, Owner Mike Parrish had this to say “the site here at Kelvedon Hatch really does make for a great day out, with a mix of history, mental workouts and tree top adrenaline filled activities, it’s a fantastic all weather, educational attraction suitable for corporate outings. We also have a lot of films made here and we’re open all year”. n

TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE CHARITY CAMPAIGN Ash’s fundraising vision - the next instalment
As Ash Parmar’s vision to raise £20,000 for two charities supporting children continues, this month we look at the latest campaign just launched by local charity Haven House Children’s Hospice about how time can make a difference. Cosmetic dentist Ash reflects on how his time has made a difference to Food for Life Vrindavan, (FFLV) a charity in India that provides education, food distribution, clothing, medical services and a better environment for the poorest children. Ash with Krishna and Sheetal, children he has been sponsoring since 2006
H
aven House launched its ‘Time to Make a Difference’ campaign placing adverts on 105 bus interior passenger panels on routes in Woodford Green, Woodford Wells and South Woodford. is is supported by a year-long partnership with local radio station Time 107.5. Listeners in East London and West Essex will be able to hear a variety of adverts profiling Haven House services and stories from parents who use the hospice. Haven House wants to highlight the different ways people can support its work whether it’s through a donation, leaving a legacy, volunteering, attending an event or pledging to raise funds. Visit www.havenhouse.org.uk/timetomakeadifference to find out more about your local children’s hospice. Meanwhile Ash gives us his very personal views about his time well spent. “Charity and my contributions have taught me important things on my own journey in life so far. When you serve others, the appreciation, gratitude and love you get is very rewarding. As a Trustee, each time I visited the Food for Life Vrindavan schools in India I saw first-hand the difference we can make to the lives of others and this has been the biggest inspiration for me. is is the reason I chose to get involved in charity fundraising last November. It has taken many hours of sharing my views and giving presentations to make people understand the worthy charitable work done by Haven House and FFLV. rough generous donations, we are in reach of the target of £20,000. anks to all those who have helped make this possible. In summary, it has been a wonderful experience to discover more about how basic things are so often taken for granted. Learning from Haven House I am now more grateful to God for good health and wellbeing - without which life can become very difficult. From FFLV I have seen how children from the slum villages can turn from ‘rough diamonds to polished jewels’.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE AT THE OAK-TREE SCHOOLS Already widely-known for its outstanding academic education, the Oak-Tree Group of Schools has spent much time over recent months creating plans and starting work on some exciting building projects designed to enhance the facilities and develop the learning.
H
aving recently completed a £200,000 extension at Normanhurst in North Chingford, this year’s principle building projects are taking place at Coopersale Hall in Epping and at the Group’s newest addition, Braeside in Buckhurst Hill. Although Braeside only joined the Oak-Tree Group eight months ago in September 2015, there is already an ambitious programme of building works planned to take place over the summer break for both the Junior and Senior sites. Matthew Hagger, Group Principal, tells us, “At the Senior site we will gained planning consent to take off the roof of the large Science Block and replace it with an upstairs Music and Drama Studio. is will provide a dedicated space for our performing arts, which is an area we will be developing. We are also aiming to create new school kitchens by reforming several ancillary Coopersale Hall School, Epping ground floor areas, and we are currently working with various design teams. is will mean we can bring a full range of lunches to the school, which will be very popular with the parents and girls!” e Braeside Junior site will not be missing out as the summer holiday will be used to extend the School Hall to 1 4 M AY 2 0 1 6
‘Braeside School, Buckhurst Hill’ provide serveries, additional storage and new toilets. is will allow the catering team to transport food from the new Senior kitchens through a dedicated access and into the serveries without disturbing lessons. In addition, the lower ground floor will be given a major makeover with a reorganisation of space to create improved classroom accommodation, a larger outside play area and a new access to the rear of the school building. Elsewhere in the Oak-Tree Group there is also work at Coopersale Hall School in Epping. Matthew Hagger continues, “We started a kitchen extension over the Easter break for completion at the end of the summer holiday. is will enable us to provide a new servery for the children, better storage and toilet facilities and enlarge our wood-panelled School Hall. As more and more pupils join us this development is essential to enhance our provision of food and provide more space for curricular and extra-curricular activities. It will also give the hall something of a facelift with a new floor and décor.” Coopersale Hall has the benefit of a large car park that helps parents when dropping off or picking up when on the daily school runs. Renovation work started at Easter to resurface the main car park, with completion due by the end of the summer beak. n

Epping Forest ESSEX WOODLAND OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE
©City of London Corporation
I
n March the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Jeffrey Mountevans, dedicated the ancient London woodland of Epping Forest to e Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC) initiative. e Lord Mayor made the announcement at the annual High Commissioner’s Banquet at the Guildhall as part of Commonwealth Week, saying: “e conservation of our planet’s natural resources and the protection of our forests are of paramount importance. We have a shared responsibility, across the Commonwealth and wider world, to protect our precious green spaces. e Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy is an excellent way of working together on forestry conservation in all 53 Commonwealth nations. e ancient woodland of Epping Forest is a jewel in the capital’s crown, and we are delighted to share our experience, expertise and skills in this area for such an important global initiative.” e QCC programme will link Commonwealth countries through the preservation of forests for future generations, in honour of Her Majesty’s role as Head of the Commonwealth. Having Epping Forest selected as the UK representative to the QCC shows how internationally important and relevant this unique, ancient woodland is. e City of London Corporation’s Head of
1 8 M AY 2 0 1 6
Conservation at Epping Forest, Dr Jeremy Dagley, explains how Epping Forest is not only a unique landscape but is part of a much larger fabric of land on the Atlantic fringes of Europe: “Over the last 24 years, European countries within the EU have set out to protect the most valuable and threatened species and habitats. In doing so they have now created the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world. is extraordinarily diverse ecological network is called Natura 2000 and includes Epping Forest, here on the borders of London and Essex.” In fact, Epping Forest is one of the ‘top one hundred’ sites, containing the second largest extent of beech woodland in the UK, second only to the New Forest. Epping Forest contains more ancient Beech trees than anywhere else because of the heritage of pollarding. So when Natura 2000 Day, on Saturday 21 May, is celebrated across Europe, why not take a stroll under the shade of Epping Forest’s magnificent Beech trees and be part of this amazing network of wildlife havens across the commonwealth and the planet beyond? LITERARY AND ESSEX HIGHLIGHTS
E
WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
pping Forest is both beautiful and fascinating. Its forest and surrounding areas have inspired historical intrigue and great literature. Whether kings in Epping or Orwell in Ilford – it all seems to happen in Essex… Henry VIII eagerly pursued his second wife Anne Boleyn but once conquered and made Queen, he again returned to the forest for refuge when she was duly executed. Henry continued onto wife number three, Jane Seymour. Elizabethan poets and courtiers, such as George Gascoigne, e Green Knight, and omas Lodge lived in and around the Forest. Plus Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare was allegedly first performed at Copped Hall in Epping. Lady Mary Wroth (1587-1653) lived at Loughton Hall. She was the first English woman writer to publish an original work of prose fiction, Urania (1621). Alfred, Lord Tennyson lived at Beech Hill House, High Beech, from 1837 until 1840, where he wrote parts of In Memoriam (1850) on the death of Arthur Hallam.
Suffering from depression, Tennyson stayed for two weeks as a guest of Allen’s asylum and would have encountered John Clare (poet) at Leopard’s Hill (Lippitts Hill) Lodge. Both Alfred Tennyson and John Clare could see the lights of London ‘flaring like a dreary dream’ from their hilltop position. Clare wrote to his wife, Patty, ‘e place here is beautiful… the country is the finest I have seen.’ I love to see the Beech Hill mounting high e brook without a bridge and nearly dry ere’s Bucket’s Hill (Buckhurst Hill) - a place of furze and clouds Which evening in a golden blaze enshrouds In the 20th century, George Orwell makes reference to Ilford (chapter 27) in his book: Down and Out in London and Paris. “…Our meal tickets were directed to a coffee-shop in Ilford… a serving-maid… grasped that we were tramps… for a long time would not serve us.” So from kings to tramps, there’s always a pivotal point in Essex. n

Television Centre will also be home to vast modern office spaces, restaurants, shops and a cinema. Soho House will be unveiling a new hotel and private members club with a rooftop swimming pool, alongside a 25,000sq ft Cowshed spa and gym. The scheme, designed by Paul Monaghan of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, retains many of the building's Grade II-listed features as part of the design.
The first 432 homes of “Helios” apartments are being created within the distinctive circular-shaped block wrapped around the central courtyard and its familiar statue of Helios, the Greek sun god, which symbolises the radiation of television around the world. A new outer crescent of homes will mirror the inner ring, separated from it by gardens, while the original “stage door” entrance to Television Centre will be a 24-hour concierge lobby. The number of billionaires living in Britain has risen at its slowest TEGI WMRGI XLI à RERGMEP GVMWMW EJXIV some of the country’s richest people saw their fortunes plummet over the past year. Those who built their wealth on commodities such as oil and steel suffered multi-billion pound falls as rock-bottom prices ate into their personal assets.
B
ut there were big rises for property tycoons, including property investors David and Simon Reuben, who made their first fortune purchasing Russian aluminium before buying up large tracts of London’s landmark buildings, reached the summit of the annual Sunday Times rich list of Britain’s 1,000 wealthiest people with a combined fortune of £13.1bn, after climbing four places in a year. Sri and Gopi Hinduja – also brothers – finished a close second with £13billion. Chelsea FC owner, Roman Abramovich, who made his fortune through his Russian oil business Sibneft, witnessed his worth fall by £890m to £6.4bn. And while London remains the world’s
preferred playground for billionaires, boasting more than any other city, there were three fewer than last year at 77. The annual list of Britain’s ultra-wealthy also boasted some spectacular rises, such as that of Sir James Dyson, the inventor famed for his bagless vacuum cleaner, among other creations. His household goods and technology business reported profits of £448m last year, with salaries and dividends boosting the Dyson family’s wealth by £1.5bn to £5bn. Perhaps the most remarkable rise was staged by the little-known brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa, who were leasing a single dilapidated garage in Bury just 15 years ago. The pair have since built an empire worth £700m by buying and renovating service stations to create a 341-strong chain of Euro Garages. They soared 473 places to 164th as their fortune increased by £550m to £700m. The Queen, who celebrated her 90th birthday last month, saw her wealth remain flat at £340m but dropped 17 places in the list to equal 319th. The sum puts her on level pegging with the entertainment mogul Simon Cowell. New entries included Sacha Baron-Cohen together with his wife, the former soap opera star Isla Fisher, the 44-year-old is worth £105m, putting him 936th in Britain. Lewis Hamilton was another new entry and Britain’s richest sportsman with a fortune of £106m. Pop star Adele saw her personal worth soar by £35m to £85m, while there was no surprise that the wealthiest band were One Direction, worth a combined £132m.
Overall, the 1,000 wealthiest people in Britain are worth a combined ÂŁ576bn, an increase of ÂŁ28.5bn on last year, which equality campaigners said amounted to an increase of ÂŁ901 every second.

DENTURES
Feel Good DENTISTRY
A denture is a removable prosthesis worn in the mouth designed to replace missing teeth. It may have one tooth on it, or multiple teeth. Dentures are mostly made from plastic, but cobalt chromium (metal based) dentures are also available. PROBLEMS WITH DENTURES A removable piece of plastic can feel like a foreign body to many people. Normal functions like eating or smiling can become difficult if someone has a loose, uncomfortable denture. Research has also shown that more plaque will stick to the teeth if a denture is worn. is can lead to gum disease, i.e. quicker loosening of remaining teeth. WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES? In modern dentistry, there is no need to wear a denture. Bridges can be a great way to have a fixed option to replace a small group of teeth. Dental implants can also offer excellent, long lasting solutions for missing teeth. It really is a lifestyle choice – do you want to potentially feel embarrassed that your denture falls out in a restaurant when you are out with friends? How would you feel if you had to take your dentures out and put them in a glass next to the bed? What would your partner think?
ENJOY YOUR FOOD AND LOOK GREAT When you look good, you feel great! Also, when you have strong, healthy teeth, you can enjoy your food much better. An investment to say “goodbye” to a plastic denture you hate wearing might be the best thing you do for yourself. e improvement in confidence will have a tremendous effect on your self-esteem, relationships and possibly even career success.

A SMILE IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS… WORDS BY DEE BROWN
D
ue to the reputation and quality of our dental care, many dentists are now referring to Smile Design by Ash for complex cases they are unable to treat. George is a typical example of this. His dentist based in Ilford, Essex referred him to us in October 2015. George had always been embarrassed of his smile, as well as being nervous of going to the dentist. Construction manager George has a large family of four children and three grandchildren whom he hasn’t had photos with in a very long time due to the embarrassment of his smile. On first meeting George, Ash made one promise… he would be smiling ready for Christmas photographs with his family. e highest priority was to give George healthy teeth and gums. It was important for George to feel
relaxed throughout his dental journey as he had always been nervous. “I was made to feel comfortable and welcome at all my appointments by the whole team. I have suffered with nerves at dental visits in the past but not at Smile Design by Ash. e design and furnishing helped to create a calming atmosphere.” After all the health treatment had been completed, Ash worked his magic and gave George a smile that made him look younger and feel better! “Ash is an exceptional professional who will never settle for second best with regards to his patient’s needs. e hygienist was first class as was the whole team.”
Ash was able to keep his promise to George and he enjoyed an extra special Christmas with his family. “It took a lot for me to go ahead with the treatment and I am so glad I did. It has improved my confidence and I am not as camera shy as I used to be!” ARE YOU EMBARRASSED OR WORRIED ABOUT YOUR SMILE? Sylwia added that ‘’HYPOXI is like nothing else on the market we watch people transform their bodies with as little as four sessions a week for 4-12 weeks – slimming out their bodies 4 4 M AY 2 0 1 6
and reducing cellulite. It’s magic!''. Boasting four different machines that help burn fat, reshape and enhance the body. HYPOXI® exercise bike is encased in an egg-shaped pod that is designed to reduce cellulite by stimulating blood flow and draining toxins from the lower part of your body. HYPOXI® trains the skin and strengthen the connective tissues. High and low pressure is applied to improve blood flow while gently exercising the skin to make it firmer and more elastic. . Here are Sylwia's top tips on shaping up for the summer: 1 - TAKE CONTROL Losing weight and toning up is going to take commitment and not just wishful thinking. Have you got it in you? 2 - KEEP A FOOD DIARY It can educate, guide and inspire - and it will be the first thing a nutritionist, personal trainer or dietitian asks you to do. 3 - BUY A DECENT PAIR OF TRAINERS Preventing injury is better than cure. Recovering from a sports injury can be a tedious process involving osteopaths, physiotherapists and a slow build back to full fitness, so avoid putting yourself in that position in the first place. 5 - THINK LITTLE AND OFTEN Let's face it, there are some people out there who are just not five-times-a-week-to-the-gym health freaks. is is where the tortoise and hare theory comes in. A small commitment to exercise on a regular basis is better than no commitment at all. Award winner Frances Furlong Rgn Bsc hons Inp. offers a wide range of treatments for Men and Women
Before
After being told by a Consultant Dermatologist in the NHS that I had prematurely aged and damaged my skin by 20 years older than my actual age, I was devastated. I always enjoyed having a year round tan so regularly used sunbeds. My reason for being with the Dermatologists was to receive treatment for skin cancer, thankfully I was treated successfully, as you can imagine I wouldn't dream of using a sunbed again! However once my tan had faded, I looked in the mirror and didn't like what I saw looking back at me, tired, dull lifeless skin, deep lines in my forehead and a heavy looking face.
”
I was recommended by my work colleague to see Frances Furlong of Perfect Skin. Frances specialises in facial aesthetics and I certainly needed a whole face and skin makeover. I was very impressed with my consultation and Frances gave me a realistic plan and timeframe to achieve my desired goals, as you can see from my results I have achieved a lot in 6 months. I am now a client for life, thank you Frances. RK Suffolk

Facts About the Ageing Face WITH FRANCES FURLONG
T
his month I am focusing on the ageing face, why the face ages like it does, how changes to the facial structure over the decades occur and possible treatment options to help you maintain a youthful, natural appearance. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN IN YOUR 20'S? Great collagen support in your 20's keeps your skin supple and gives you a healthy glow. However many experience acne symptoms, even if it wasn’t an issue for them in their teens, with pimples popping up on the lower face and along the jawline which can spoil the complexion and lead to scarring. Skin peeling, topical AHA products and retinol based derivatives can all help along with antibiotic support or oral contraceptive pills to help control hormonal changes that can affect the skin. Furthermore how you care for your skin in this decade will determine the skin you have in your 30's and 40's, hence why wearing sunscreen daily all year round and minimising sun exposure will help the fine lines turning into wrinkles. Antioxidants and stem cells and plant protective based serums and creams are a must, after all prevention is better than cure! WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FAT COMPARTMENTS IN OUR FACES AS WE AGE? In basic terms ' Full and Perky in Your Twenties to Slim and Angular in Your Forties!' In your twenties: the fat below the surface of your skin especially around the apples of your cheeks is firm and lifted, however In your thirties: “You also see early signs of volume loss, mostly in the mid-face and chin area, I am a big fan of chin rejuvenation as I tend to find clients recede in and the strong youthful lower face tends to sag and droop and gives a look that is often referred to as 'the cheer up love face!'
Also due to the decline of collagen and hyaluronic acid that gives our skin the plump fresh look, you may notice that your face is starting to look slimmer and more angular, which can make you look older and more tired. So this is a good time to add some topical collagen and hyaluronic acid to your beauty routine to keep some plumpness. Applying a serum after exfoliating to help lock in moisture, I love Suisse Inspira products from Germany for this as they contain high qualities of hyaluronic acid and plant stem cells. Dermal fillers, meso glow Injections full of amino acids, growth factors and peptides are an amazing way to feed the skin. In your forties: At this point in your life, your face starts losing even more of that subcutaneous fat you had so much of in your twenties, although you won’t lose it equally in all areas. Generally we lose the deep fat pads in the mid-face and those on the temples and the front of the ears firstly. Secondly we lose [fat] around the mouth and chin and along the jawline. It looks like the skin is falling, but actually our faces are deflating! Many clients come to me saying, I need a facelift, but I'm scared to go under the knife, can you help? e answer is yes, if you think about it logically, simply lifting and tightening the skin will in no way replace the fat compartments you have lost, you would still need to use dermal fillers to shape and define the face even with surgery. For me the first step is to carefully and aesthetically look at where the fat has been lost and replace this with a suitable dermal filler. e chin area is one of my top tips to rejuvenate also as it helps to support the lower jaw and mouth area and gives you a younger appearance immediately. 'WHEN IT COMES TO AESTHETICS A NATURAL SOFT APPROACH IS BETTER THAN AN OVERFILLED, EXPRESSIONLESS AND RIGID LOOK'. e first place to age is the eye area Eyelid rejuvenation to the upper and lower delicate eye area is the first place to start ageing, this tends to be due to prolonged sun exposure, fine lines and wrinkles and dark brown pigment spots, the fat around the orbital area tends to sag and clients notice this change more than anything. Skin discolouration begins to appear in the mid 30s age generally below the eye area fine crinkly lines appear and dynamic lines around the crows feet area become exacerbated due to repetitive facial expressions. Fat sagging under the eyes will lead to a hollow tear trough appearance and bulging dark shadows. Treatment options are tired eye. Derma pen with meso glow, muscle relaxing injections, dermal fillers, laser and peeling. In some cases surgery is needed as a first step with aesthetic non surgical treatments either before to aid healing or after to perfect the result. A daily topical eye cream is a must to feed, nourish and protect. n

DEKTON THE LATEST IN HIGH TECH WORKTOPS. DEKTON is a long-term product for those looking to turn their kitchen into a unique space. It allows greater potential for installation in one piece with no cuts, no joints and no limits. It has the appeal of a completely uniform surface, which fits seamlessly into very different design styles. DEKTON employs exclusive Sinterized Particle Technology, a high tech process which represents an accelerated version of the metamorphic change that natural stone undergoes when subjected to high temperatures and pressure over thousands of years. Sinterized particle technology synthesizes truly innovative procedures from the most advanced technology industries. is evolution represents a technological and industrial leap capable of generating a new process, a revolutionary material and a leading product. Electronic microscopy allows us to fully appreciate the material’s zero porosity, a consequence of the sinterization and ultra-compaction process exclusive to DEKTON. is zero porosity and lack of the micro-defects that cause tension or weak spots mark the difference as far as DEKTON is concerned DEKTON combines the qualities expected by the chef in all of us. It is a clean surface that is nice to touch and resistant to all the daily grind that takes place in a kitchen over years of use. It is an ultra-sophisticated material for busy everyday life, capable of creating spaces that make the day to day preparation of food a pleasant experience that precedes the pleasure of sharing a meal with friends or family.

NOT THINKING TWICE ABOUT A HOME SWIMMING POOL
F
our years ago Matt and Kerrie Smith moved from London to a detached home in rural Buckinghamshire with their three children, tempted by the promise of a traditional family home in the county. After making the decision to transform their home with a pool house in the garden, Kerrie talks about her experience. WHAT MADE YOU FIRST DECIDE TO GET A HOME SWIMMING POOL? My son has a friend who has an indoor swimming pool and we just saw how much flexibility it gives the family. Both my husband and I like to keep active, so we felt it would tick all the boxes. It’s a place where adults can keep fit and children can have fun, while also being a space where we can go to relax and disappear from the house when we want to. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ORIGIN LEISURE? Andrew Ginger came out to meet with us and we immediately knew it was the right decision. Origin Leisure has 35 years’ experience and understood what we wanted. Most importantly, they were respectful of our budget from start to finish. ey managed the whole project from design and planning, through to building and maintenance. e whole project went just as they said it would, without us having to lift a finger. 5 0 M AY 2 0 1 6
WHAT WERE THE MAIN CHALLENGES? Initially, the biggest challenge was deciding whether it was the right decision for our family. We have other parts of the house that could be refurbished, but if we had waited for a few years then the children may be too old to fully enjoy it. We wanted to give them the joys of having their own swimming pool while they were young. We had no need to worry about the building work. It started in July 2014 and was completed in November, 4 weeks quicker than expected. Origin Leisure were so polite and thoughtful, even taking care to move our children’s beloved Wendy House from one part of the garden to another to make room for the pool. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT A HOME SWIMMING POOL? It’s honestly the best thing we’ve done. We knew we were going to enjoy it, but we absolutely love it. My advice is not to think twice. I smile every time I look at the pool and it’s brought so much fun to our home. n

Stylish interiors
...that are here to stay BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Decoristas get as much pleasure from beautifully designed interiors as fashionistas get from clothes, but even the most devoted don’t want to be such dedicated followers of trends that it means redecorating every season.
T
hankfully, a little insider knowledge goes a long way and savvy home bunnies know the styles that won’t have a short shelf-life, because their good looks and design credentials will ensure enduring appeal. Plus, some looks are versatile enough to allow for fresh interpretations, which can easily breathe new life into them. Reprise last year’s favourites that are set to make their mark again in 2016.
GLADLY GREY Those of us reduced to a ‘rabbit-in-the-headlights’ standstill when confronted by colour charts hailed the passion for grey as a blessed relief. This is surely a ‘Mr Right’ palette - easy-on-the eye, versatile, and grey can be mean and moody or feminine and delicate, depending on the shade you choose. It’s also the perfect foil for a multitude of other colours, so I predict this colour is ‘a keeper’, and our love affair with grey will continue for a long time to come. BRING ON BLING It’s confession time... I’m an interiors magpie and can’t resist something shiny and glittery, so I was utterly delighted by the copper craze, and in 2016 will be following the metal trail to gold. There should be a ‘handle with care’
label on metallics however, as overdosing on them can all too easily tip a setting into tacky territory, but with a careful ‘less is more’ approach, they’re guaranteed to inject glamour and interest. Go full-on with metallic-finish tiles, a high-end choice for kitchens and bathrooms, or simply confine burnished metal to glittering accessories. MONOCHROME MAGIC Classic, timeless black and white never goes out of fashion, and just as a wardrobe should have at least one little black dress, in my book, every home can benefit from one room decorated in monochrome. It’s a style that’s surprised even the interiors experts with its enduring popularity over the last few years - but not its fans, already well aware of how versatile it is. For life on the really dark side, you can opt for drama - a black feature wall or ceiling - or my choice; white walls and black paintwork, complemented by black framed photographic prints. Leave it minimal or dress it up with simple ‘home jewellery’, like colourful cushions and lamps. Frankly, what’s not to like? RUNNING WILD My votes for last year’s fun, achievable looks went to ‘country lodge’ think hunting, shooting, fishing, with wood panelling and stag heads - and its wilder cousin, frontier decor, evoking the Wild West in prairie chic, fur throws, buffalo heads and tribal prints. Nature will still rule in 2016 but looking forward, my advice is: step away from the squirrels and cute creatures! A more formal botanical look’s coming through, which is less cosy and more sophisticated, and those deer heads should be funky and colourful and a little less like true hunting trophies. Alternatively, embrace a luxury lodge look; natural materials from stone to wood and layered faux furs - more grand mountain retreat than cowboy shack.

HOUSE & & GARDEN HOUSE GARDEN
See the light in 2016 BY GABRIELLE FAGAN
Lighting can transform rooms creating different atmospheres and even, by visual trickery, changing the dimensions of a space. Once you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here we reveal illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016...
BIG & BOLD Lighting design is about to change dramatically. Rather than being the carrier of one or several large light bulbs, light fittings will become the source of light in their own right. Organic shapes and new materials will combine with the myriad, hugely effective, LED light sources, to create stunning and dramatic lighting, while standard, domestic lighting will become more elegant, compact and efficient. Almost daily, exciting and innovative lights are being launched, which showcase design talent, new materials and technology. Interestingly though, one of the strongest trends for the past few years has been anything but high-tech; retro industrial lighting is still hugely in demand. Sun metal pendants, workshop adjustable wall lights and factory floor and table lamps are very on trend, and look particularly effective teamed with traditional style filament light bulbs. LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this
year’s light range. Decorative bulbs - with LED, filaments or appealing shapes - are really making an impact as they are an easy, inexpensive but extremely appealing way to freshen up a space. Cluster pendants are a striking alternative to a large statement pendant shade, and work well in smaller spaces. To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which make a statement in any room. MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections. Metallics are expected to gain momentum in 2016, and that’s evident in lighting ranges. Bronze, brass, copper and chrome all provide a hint of vintage luxury, while their highly reflective surfaces dance a warm, sparkling glow around the room. Metallic accents are great because they can be adapted to suit all tastes, from clusters of distressed copper pendant lights for industrial style spaces, to glamorous mercury silver table lamps catering to the luxurious statement home.
COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and coordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features - people are much more ready to experiment with lighting these days and there’s a huge choice available with chandeliers no longer confined to living rooms; they’re being used to add an instant glamour factor in kitchens, bedrooms and studies. Wall lights work wonderfully to draw attention to focal points - for instance, a pair of lights flanking a console table or work of art. Increasingly, people are co-ordinating table and floor lamps and pendants, a sure sign that they are taking more care over lighting, which ideally should be planned before redecoration. It’s all about using your imagination and indulging your own taste.

CHIGWELL
“Upon arriving at the property we were initially impressed by the location, being a no-through-road, and the design of the home, as it was newly built.
The moment we walked through the door we were impressed by the spacious entrance hall, it certainly had the ‘WOW’ factor for us and first-time visitors are always impressed. As we were guided around the home the accommodation just got better and better, the rooms are spacious and there’s an en-suite to every bedroom, plus underfloor heating throughout the home.
We have always loved the house; the layout is perfect for entertaining. The kitchen/diner/family area is the heart and hub of the home; two sets of bi-fold doors open to allow the outside in during the summer months and provides access to the patio, with its hot tub. We are able to accommodate a lot of guests for barbecues and gatherings.”

WOODLANDS UNVEILS ITS BRAND NEW SHOW HOME
A
stunning new show home has now been unveiled at the popular Woodlands development in Edney Common, only five miles from the vibrant City of Chelmsford. On the 2nd March over 80 people attended the launch evening and were treated to a cooking demonstration by renowned local eatery Bridge Street Restaurant Lounge & Grill, all in the comfort of the stunning new show home. Guests sampled delicious food by chef’s Chris Gamblin and Josh Dawson from Bridge Street restaurant, Writtle. Highlights included beef carpaccio and sun blushed tomato canapes, pigeon waldorf salad starter, venison and gnocchi main and pistachio cake for dessert. e food was carefully selected and cooked in front of guests on the night, to dispel some of the myths about how difficult certain food is to make. Chris said ‘We thoroughly enjoyed the demonstration. Its great to do something so different and get people thinking about cooking in a new way. Perfectly located in the heart of the Essex countryside, Woodlands is a stunning development of 15 distinctive luxury four, five and six bedroom family homes by the homebuilders Biminster Homes and William ompson Homes. Paul Beresford, Chairman and Managing Director of selling agents Beresfords, commented: “e show home offers potential purchasers the opportunity to experience first-hand the superb design, spacious layout and high quality specification of the homes at Woodlands. So far the properties have proven very popular and now, 8 2 M AY 2 0 1 6
with the opening of a new show home which backs onto stunning ancient woodland, we have already seen a significant increase in interest.” Peter Jenkins from Biminster Homes commented: “I am delighted with how many people came to view the new show home. As people observed, the last remaining properties really do make the perfect family residences thanks to their contemporary spacious living accommodation coupled with a location that is second to none.” Located just five miles from the vibrant City of Chelmsford, the parish of Highwood is very rural and comprises of five hamlets including Edney Common.
